- 0:14Tyce Erickson: And I'm glad you guys are here with us and listening in today's episode.
- 0:21Tyce Erickson: I hope it'll help you guys out.
- 0:24Tyce Erickson: And, uh, I can share some information with you guys that will Be beneficial to you man.
- 0:31Tyce Erickson: I like that song that just gets me pumped up.
- 0:33Tyce Erickson: So Anyhow, uh, it's been a little while since we've jumped on here and done a podcast just been busy with uh training and doing a little hunting, um Getting these dogs out and enjoying this time of year when we really get to put these Dogs to work.
- 0:50Tyce Erickson: Um, I love this time of year.
- 0:52Tyce Erickson: Um, my analogy is, you know, it's like football.
- 0:55Tyce Erickson: You train all summer and you're doing all these drills, you're doing all this work.
- 1:00Tyce Erickson: And now we're, we're putting the players in the game.
- 1:05Tyce Erickson: We're putting them up against the elements.
- 1:06Tyce Erickson: We're putting them up against different scenarios and setups and we're seeing how they play the game.
- 1:13Tyce Erickson: So.
- 1:15Tyce Erickson: Uh, it's fun.
- 1:17Tyce Erickson: I love working young dogs.
- 1:19Tyce Erickson: I love working, um, old dogs, young dogs.
- 1:22Tyce Erickson: Obviously it does, it's awesome when they do a good job and the training that you've done pulls through.
- 1:30Tyce Erickson: And it's also kind of fun to work through challenges with them.
- 1:34Tyce Erickson: So enjoy the journey.
- 1:36Tyce Erickson: Don't, uh, stress out if your dog's not doing everything exactly the way you thought it would do and go back in the yard, work the dog, work through those things, and then get them back out in the field and put it to the test.
- 1:52Tyce Erickson: So.
- 1:53Tyce Erickson: Just stay positive and have fun.
- 1:57Tyce Erickson: Um, in today's episode, uh, this podcast, I wanted to talk about, um, some things that could be beneficial to you guys that I've learned over the years.
- 2:06Tyce Erickson: And this actually comes to, uh, the health of dogs and, Treating dogs when there's issues and, and stuff like that.
- 2:17Tyce Erickson: So, um, I'm just going to dive in.
- 2:19Tyce Erickson: I don't know how long this is going to go.
- 2:21Tyce Erickson: We'll see what my brain can come up with as we're talking about these things and kind of thinking about my past experiences, but first let's talk about.
- 2:31Tyce Erickson: some staples I would recommend having around the house, um, or in the field or in your car or wherever you train.
- 2:39Tyce Erickson: But, uh, one of the things I would have first is some bandage.
- 2:44Tyce Erickson: Um, some of the bandage that's the adhesive bandage, you guys have probably seen it.
- 2:49Tyce Erickson: People will wrap animals legs.
- 2:51Tyce Erickson: Maybe if you get an injury at the vet's office or, you know, or you'll see him on horses, things like that, but take, have some.
- 3:02Tyce Erickson: adhesive bandage on hand.
- 3:04Tyce Erickson: Wouldn't hurt to also have some gauze on hand that you can, if the dog is in the brush and it happens to, you know, get a wound of some sort, you can put that gauze on there.
- 3:18Tyce Erickson: Wrap that up nice and tight to keep debris or stuff from getting in there.
- 3:24Tyce Erickson: And then you can get that dog to the vet's office and, and get it, get some help with it.
- 3:31Tyce Erickson: Um, something also I've added to.
- 3:34Tyce Erickson: My first aid kit, I guess you could say, or having on hand is a stapler.
- 3:39Tyce Erickson: Um, you can get on Amazon or online, some of these places, and actually find staplers that are pretty inexpensive.
- 3:51Tyce Erickson: Where if you get a big enough wound or a deep enough wound, you can actually have someone help you hold it.
- 3:57Tyce Erickson: and, uh, staple that wound together.
- 4:01Tyce Erickson: Um, and so debris and stuff is not getting in that.
- 4:04Tyce Erickson: I would recommend having some iodine also on hand.
- 4:07Tyce Erickson: Um, you can dilute that iodine down and flush the wound, staple it back together, keep an eye on the wound, and, and Dogs are pretty tough animals.
- 4:21Tyce Erickson: Generally, they're going to make a pretty, the recover, the recoveries are generally pretty quick.
- 4:29Tyce Erickson: They do well, as long as you keep the things clean and also avoid infection.
- 4:35Tyce Erickson: Now, also, I'm going to start with this.
- 4:36Tyce Erickson: I am not a veterinarian.
- 4:38Tyce Erickson: Don't claim to be a veterinarian.
- 4:40Tyce Erickson: So take these things I recommend with a grain of salt.
- 4:43Tyce Erickson: Um, these are things I've just used or I've seen that seems to work.
- 4:48Tyce Erickson: Um, but I do not claim, um, to be a veterinarian.
- 4:52Tyce Erickson: And so just do your best with it.
- 4:54Tyce Erickson: But hopefully these will help you out.
- 4:56Tyce Erickson: I don't think it hurts to have some of these things on hand.
- 5:01Tyce Erickson: These days, veterinarians can be hard to get into.
- 5:05Tyce Erickson: I mean, I've had dogs that get an injury and I say, Hey, when can I get them in?
- 5:09Tyce Erickson: And they say in a week or two.
- 5:12Tyce Erickson: Or, uh, yeah, you can come after hours and it's going to be double or triple the amount, or you can go to an emergency clinic and it's going to be that much more money.
- 5:23Tyce Erickson: So sometimes we need to take care of these dogs right away.
- 5:27Tyce Erickson: We need to get them in quick and we don't have time to mess around with.
- 5:32Tyce Erickson: Scheduling an appointment with the vet.
- 5:33Tyce Erickson: So some of these things could necessarily either save your dog's life, help out with infection, um, which obviously ultimately it could save a dog's life.
- 5:42Tyce Erickson: So, um, iodine I'd recommend having on hand a stapler.
- 5:47Tyce Erickson: I'd recommend having on hand a ACE bandage wrap with some gauze that you can wrap a wound up, have on hand that never hurts.
- 5:56Tyce Erickson: And then also something I do like if you get sore pads, It's called Mushers.
- 6:02Tyce Erickson: You can look it up here on Amazon, I think is where you find it.
- 6:09Tyce Erickson: Uh, bear with me here.
- 6:13Tyce Erickson: I think it's called Mushers Feet.
- 6:19Tyce Erickson: Okay, Mushers Secret Paw Wax.
- 6:24Tyce Erickson: So, Um, I don't even know what's in it, honestly, but if you get dogs with sore feet, um, maybe you're doing a lot of chukar hunting with your upland dog and the dogs are getting in the rocks, tearing up their feet, or sometimes in the winter, your dogs will just get dry feet depending on what they're on.
- 6:45Tyce Erickson: Maybe if your dog's on concrete and he's really active, um, sometimes they can get sore pads.
- 6:51Tyce Erickson: It just has some oils or moisturizing content.
- 6:55Tyce Erickson: You can jump on there and really look into what's in it.
- 6:59Tyce Erickson: It says moisturizing dog balm that creates an invisible barrier that protects and heals dry cracked paws.
- 7:05Tyce Erickson: All natural with vitamin E and food grade ingredients.
- 7:10Tyce Erickson: So It's good stuff.
- 7:12Tyce Erickson: We usually always try to keep it on hand.
- 7:15Tyce Erickson: Uh, occasionally we get dogs in that come in for training and they're just kind of nutso's in their dog run.
- 7:21Tyce Erickson: And so if they get, if they do get sore spots on their feet, we'll try that musher secret.
- 7:26Tyce Erickson: So that's a little tip for you to get.
- 7:29Tyce Erickson: Um, looking here on Amazon, it's 15.
- 7:34Tyce Erickson: 99 and you can get it on prime.
- 7:35Tyce Erickson: So pretty cheap, but worth having on hand.
- 7:39Tyce Erickson: Um, so the stapler, um, some of that.
- 7:42Tyce Erickson: Musher's Paw Secret, that's a really good one to use and then, um, uh, um, those are some good things to have.
- 7:52Tyce Erickson: Now I'm going to talk about some other stuff that you can use.
- 7:56Tyce Erickson: Um, another antibiotic I would recommend having on hand is metronidazole.
- 8:04Tyce Erickson: Uh, metronidazole is, I've used it for giardia and other gut issues.
- 8:10Tyce Erickson: Generally, again, I'm not a vet, I'm just going off.
- 8:14Tyce Erickson: Practical real life use experience here.
- 8:18Tyce Erickson: But if your dog gets into nasty water, and all of a sudden it has severe diarrhea, it doesn't seem to be getting better, um, and you feel like it's picked up a gut, something in its gut, um, I have given the dogs metronidazole, and it seems to clean those out.
- 8:37Tyce Erickson: I typically will give the dog 500 milligrams, uh, twice a day, anywhere from 8 to 10 days, and usually it will clear.
- 8:46Tyce Erickson: that right out.
- 8:48Tyce Erickson: Um, metronidazole is an antibiotic and has to be prescribed by a veterinarian.
- 8:54Tyce Erickson: And so lots of times they won't just give you a bottle of metronidazole because there are potential side effects that can come from metronidazole.
- 9:06Tyce Erickson: being used.
- 9:07Tyce Erickson: Um, and I'm actually going to talk about those here.
- 9:11Tyce Erickson: So potential side effects, I'll just kind of read them to you are, um, it says here, metronidazole is an antibiotic medication commonly used in veterinary medicine to treat a range of bacterial and protozoal.
- 9:28Tyce Erickson: Protozoal infections in dogs is effective against a variety of ana, anaerobic bacteria which thrive in low oxygen environments and certain types of parasites.
- 9:41Tyce Erickson: So, um, it can help with bacterial infections, protozoal, protozoal, I know how to say that, I went to school, protozoal effect, infections, inflammatory bowel disease.
- 9:57Tyce Erickson: periodontal disease, also abscess and wound infections.
- 10:02Tyce Erickson: So here it's under that it says metronidazole can be prescribed for treating abscesses and deep wound infections where anaerobic bacteria are implicated.
- 10:12Tyce Erickson: So again, and underneath this that I'm reading here online, it says it is important to note that metronidazole should be only be used under the guidance of a veterinarian and as prescribed.
- 10:22Tyce Erickson: So, um, with all antibiotics, you're going to see that.
- 10:29Tyce Erickson: that you should, they should be prescribed under a veterinarian.
- 10:33Tyce Erickson: Um, I'm going to talk about the side effects of metronidazole, which, um, I think the risk is kind of worth having it on hand, but, uh, gastro.
- 10:48Tyce Erickson: Intestinal upset is a most commonly reported side effect, may include symptoms like nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite.
- 10:57Tyce Erickson: Another side effect of metronidazole is neurological symptoms.
- 11:02Tyce Erickson: In rare cases, high doses of prolonged use of metronidazole can lead to neurological side effects.
- 11:07Tyce Erickson: These may include disorientation, incoordination or seizures.
- 11:12Tyce Erickson: If any of these symptoms occur, obviously call your vet.
- 11:15Tyce Erickson: Allergic reactions.
- 11:16Tyce Erickson: Some dogs may be hypersensitive to metronidazole, leading to allergic reactions.
- 11:20Tyce Erickson: Signs of allergic reaction may include itching, hives, swelling of the face, extremities, or difficulty breathing, darkening of the urine.
- 11:29Tyce Erickson: Stomach pain or cramping, in some cases dogs may experience abdominal discomfort while taking metronidazole.
- 11:37Tyce Erickson: Dry mouth, metronidazole can lead to temporary decrease in saliva production causing a dry or tacky mouth feeling in the mouth.
- 11:46Tyce Erickson: So I've given dogs metronidazole over the years.
- 11:49Tyce Erickson: And only one of those that I have noticed on the X looking at from the outside is dry mouth.
- 11:56Tyce Erickson: Sometimes you put that pill in their mouth, it's almost like it's just, I don't know, they kind of get something dry in their mouth.
- 12:03Tyce Erickson: And so it can be sometimes a little hard to get down, so you want to get it back in the throat, get it down quick.
- 12:08Tyce Erickson: Um, and so they don't get that dry mouth.
- 12:11Tyce Erickson: So, talking about metronidazole.
- 12:15Tyce Erickson: Since lots of times you cannot get it from your vet and if you want to have a bottle on hand just to be safe in case you think your dog has giardia or some of these issues or picked up something where there's blood in the stools and The dog, you think it needs kind of a clean out of the gut.
- 12:36Tyce Erickson: Um, again, take this with caution, right?
- 12:40Tyce Erickson: Sometimes you can just feed the dog something different.
- 12:43Tyce Erickson: Um, and, and the dog can have an upset stomach.
- 12:49Tyce Erickson: You don't want to just throw antibiotics at him at any time.
- 12:52Tyce Erickson: But if you're seeing prolonged four or five days, five, six days of where there's blood in the stools, diarrhea, and something, and you can't get that dog into a veterinarian office, I would recommend, personally, this is Ty speaking, again I'm not a vet, um, to try giving them metronidazole.
- 13:13Tyce Erickson: I think I haven't seen any side effects besides maybe a little bit dry mouth for a minute and a lot of times the dog's gut will heal right up and they'll get feeling better and they're back to normal.
- 13:27Tyce Erickson: So it could save you some money, save you some time.
- 13:31Tyce Erickson: Having this on hand is kind of a, this is kind of part of your first aid kit.
- 13:36Tyce Erickson: Yeah.
- 13:37Tyce Erickson: You could say so.
- 13:40Tyce Erickson: Um, I had a client one time showed up, he couldn't get his dog into the vet.
- 13:45Tyce Erickson: He was going out of town.
- 13:47Tyce Erickson: The dog was lethargic, had diarrhea.
- 13:49Tyce Erickson: Uh, he didn't know what was going on and, um, there's blood in his stools and I just said, listen, I can't take, he wanted me to board the dog for him.
- 14:00Tyce Erickson: I said, I don't want this.
- 14:01Tyce Erickson: whatever he has going on around my other dogs.
- 14:05Tyce Erickson: And so I gave him some metronidols and said, Hey, if you want to try this, it's totally up to you do this.
- 14:11Tyce Erickson: It gave him about four or five days worth of the medication.
- 14:15Tyce Erickson: Gave it to the dog, said dog bounce back was fine.
- 14:19Tyce Erickson: Didn't have an issue since.
- 14:20Tyce Erickson: So somewhere along the line, hunting that dog or getting it in dirty water, that dog had picked up something that was bothering that dog's stomach.
- 14:29Tyce Erickson: So let's talk about how to get metronidazole.
- 14:34Tyce Erickson: Okay.
- 14:34Tyce Erickson: The only way I know around this, I'm going to tell you this little secret here is through the aquatic pharmacies.
- 14:41Tyce Erickson: So aquatic pharmacies, you can actually get.
- 14:46Tyce Erickson: You can actually get antibiotics for fish.
- 14:51Tyce Erickson: Now, according to my knowledge, again, I'm no drug expert here, all I've seen is just going off the experience that it's pretty much the same thing.
- 15:01Tyce Erickson: So, but they call it, to get around the legalities of it, they call it Fishzol, Metronidazole, Fishzol.
- 15:08Tyce Erickson: They also have, um, Amoxicillin, so it's like Fishicillin, or whatever you want to call it.
- 15:15Tyce Erickson: But I personally feel like it's as good as any of your human grade stuff.
- 15:21Tyce Erickson: Now that's up to you.
- 15:22Tyce Erickson: I haven't taken it as a human.
- 15:25Tyce Erickson: Um, But if things got really too bad and I couldn't get into a doctor, I would maybe consider it.
- 15:32Tyce Erickson: But anyways, for dogs, I have not had any issues.
- 15:35Tyce Erickson: They do.
- 15:36Tyce Erickson: It does come in a powder form or you can also get it in a pill.
- 15:40Tyce Erickson: I buy them in 500 milligram pills and generally like a larger dog.
- 15:45Tyce Erickson: Like, um, most of the dogs we work with, Labradors, Retrievers, German Short Haired Pointers, those type of, that size of dog, I'd say 40 to, um, 40 up, 40, 50 pounds and up, I'll usually give them 500 milligrams twice a day for about 8 to 10 days, and that usually seems to do the job.
- 16:08Tyce Erickson: Now if you're giving your dog this medication, and it's not doing anything after that time, and it's not cleaning it up, Then you're going to want to make sure you get that dog into the vet or it wouldn't hurt to schedule a vet appointment.
- 16:21Tyce Erickson: And if they can't get you in for a week or two, it's up to you.
- 16:25Tyce Erickson: If you want to take that chance and give your dog some metronidazole, clear out that gut.
- 16:32Tyce Erickson: And the dog might bounce back and be fine.
- 16:35Tyce Erickson: What I will see generally when I feed them, when, if I give them a dog metronidazole, I will not generally give them as much food.
- 16:45Tyce Erickson: My thought process, if you give them a ton of food and they eat that food, that drug is going to be a little more absorbed into the food.
- 16:53Tyce Erickson: And I want that drug to kind of go into the gut and.
- 16:57Tyce Erickson: and really work and not be absorbed in the food.
- 16:59Tyce Erickson: So generally I feed the dog a little bit lighter, maybe half as much as I generally do.
- 17:04Tyce Erickson: And that just seems to work on the gut better that way.
- 17:11Tyce Erickson: Now what you'll see generally if it starts working is the gut, actually the dog might not have a bowel movement for a day or so because what happened is that dog has diarrhea.
- 17:22Tyce Erickson: It's really just flushing through the system.
- 17:25Tyce Erickson: And when the gut starts repairing itself, The body starts actually creating stools inside the animal's body and it starts backing up.
- 17:34Tyce Erickson: And then after a day or two, you'll start actually getting normal stools or more solid stools.
- 17:40Tyce Erickson: So that's a good sign, actually, if you start them on it and they don't have, they don't.
- 17:46Tyce Erickson: Keep up the chronic diarrhea and starts backing up that that can also help.
- 17:52Tyce Erickson: Um, so anyhow, if you think your dog has an issue in the gut that you can again, get the dog into the vet or you're out hunting.
- 18:02Tyce Erickson: And it's becoming chronic.
- 18:05Tyce Erickson: You're getting days of this.
- 18:07Tyce Erickson: You can go ahead and try that and get on hand.
- 18:09Tyce Erickson: It's not a cheap drug.
- 18:10Tyce Erickson: It's about even if, if you buy it, um, through the aquatic pharmacies that are online, you're going to pay about 50 cents a pill.
- 18:17Tyce Erickson: So you're about a dollar a day.
- 18:19Tyce Erickson: So it's not terrible, but.
- 18:21Tyce Erickson: Um, but it's not cheap at the same, at the same time.
- 18:25Tyce Erickson: So, um, talking to another vet friend, another drug, um, you can use as Femazole.
- 18:34Tyce Erickson: Um, femazole is also another dewormer that can be used for coccidiosis and some of these other parasites or worms that can get into a dog's body and.
- 18:46Tyce Erickson: It's actually, can be, is, you can find it at Tractor Supply, Cal Ranch, some of these places.
- 18:52Tyce Erickson: The, the brand name is Panacur.
- 18:54Tyce Erickson: Um, it's actually a horse dewormer, but it'll say Panacur, and then underneath it, in parentheses, 10 percent fenbendazole.
- 19:02Tyce Erickson: And fenbendazole, talking to my veterinarian friend, he said that it can be a good one to use for giardia and another, um, different range of, of parasites.
- 19:15Tyce Erickson: So, that being said, um, it would not hurt to have fenbendazole and metronidazole on hand.
- 19:23Tyce Erickson: Fenbendazole is You can get it through your vet or you can also get it over the counter at your local, uh, farm stores.
- 19:33Tyce Erickson: Again, that is fenbendazole.
- 19:35Tyce Erickson: Now, when it comes to the amounts of fenbendazole to give, I would Google search on what you're trying to treat for if it's Giardia, but it's going to go off the weight of the animal and you're going to give the dog, um, to help, um, cure that, cure that, um, sickness that the dog is having.
- 19:57Tyce Erickson: So Fimbendazole, metronidazole.
- 19:59Tyce Erickson: Um, I'm gonna go ahead and tell a little story here also.
- 20:04Tyce Erickson: So we had a litter of puppies not too long ago that they were just getting done whelping.
- 20:09Tyce Erickson: They started losing weight.
- 20:10Tyce Erickson: They started having diarrhea.
- 20:12Tyce Erickson: We had dewormed them.
- 20:14Tyce Erickson: We took them to the vet's office, spent thousands of dollars trying to figure out what it was.
- 20:19Tyce Erickson: The vet's office kept saying, Oh, the dogs have Parvo.
- 20:23Tyce Erickson: And they kept doing all these Parvo tests.
- 20:25Tyce Erickson: And the tests kept coming back negative.
- 20:27Tyce Erickson: And I said, we've never had Parvo in any of our puppies or anything like that.
- 20:31Tyce Erickson: Not saying they can't pick it up, but they did five or six Parvo tests and they kept coming back negative and they kept Calling it Parvo and it kind of drive me nuts.
- 20:41Tyce Erickson: So they ended up finally a vet's office after a puppy had gone home to a client called up, we, they'd done some testing and they had put these, all these puppies on IVs and it was just kind of a big mess.
- 20:55Tyce Erickson: And this one puppy ended up getting.
- 21:00Tyce Erickson: And I said, what are we doing here?
- 21:02Tyce Erickson: This dog has gone home.
- 21:03Tyce Erickson: These other ones are still not doing 100%.
- 21:06Tyce Erickson: What is the difference here?
- 21:08Tyce Erickson: So, they'd had the dogs on metronidazole.
- 21:12Tyce Erickson: Um, that had not seemed to kick the bug that they had picked up.
- 21:17Tyce Erickson: Um, and I'm going to backtrack a little here.
- 21:19Tyce Erickson: The mom, when she was whelping, we let her out into the airing, airing area.
- 21:23Tyce Erickson: She ended up getting into some Long story short, got into some dirty water and I think she tracked that dirty water back into those puppies and those puppies as they were nursing or finishing nursing and picked up that bug and had gotten in the, inside the puppy's intestinal track and started basically going to town there.
- 21:44Tyce Erickson: So the metronidazole was not working.
- 21:47Tyce Erickson: Um, and so, make long story short, we actually ended up trying fenbendazole.
- 21:54Tyce Erickson: Albin Oral Suspension.
- 21:56Tyce Erickson: So, and those were the ones that seemed to knock it out completely.
- 22:02Tyce Erickson: We actually ended up losing a couple puppies, which is super unfortunate.
- 22:05Tyce Erickson: We're giving them IVs, we're giving them metronidazole, we're trying to, you know, syringe feed them where these puppies had gone from just completely healthy and doing great, to all of a sudden having these issues.
- 22:16Tyce Erickson: And I want to share these things with you guys to hopefully Save, you know, some time or give you some, some things that you could write down that hey, if, if, if we have these symptoms, maybe let's try this, um, because the side effects are very minimal compared to saving a dog's life.
- 22:35Tyce Erickson: So, um, with albinoral suspension, I'll just kind of tell you what that is.
- 22:42Tyce Erickson: Um, I got some notes here I'll share with you guys.
- 22:47Tyce Erickson: Um, it says, Alvin, so it's sulfa, sulfa dimethoxine, I'm probably saying that wrong, sulfa dimethoxine is an antimicrob, microb, microbial medication used in veterinarian medicine.
- 23:05Tyce Erickson: It is often prescribed for the treatment of bacterial infections, specifically those caused by certain protozoa and bacteria in dogs and other animals.
- 23:15Tyce Erickson: Oral Alvin, oral.
- 23:17Tyce Erickson: Albin suspension typically refers to a liquid formulation of the medication that is administered orally.
- 23:23Tyce Erickson: This is, this suspension form makes it easier to dose the medication, especially in situations where precise dosage adjustment is needed based on the size and weight of the animal.
- 23:34Tyce Erickson: Active ingredients are sulfadimethoxine, which belongs to the class of drugs known as sulfonamides.
- 23:45Tyce Erickson: Sorry, I'm totally slaughtering these names, I'm sure.
- 23:48Tyce Erickson: Albin is commonly used to treat coccidiosis, a parasite infection caused by certain protozoa, coccidia that can affect the intestines, intestines of dogs and other animals.
- 23:58Tyce Erickson: It may also be prescribed for certain bacterial infections.
- 24:02Tyce Erickson: Um, so, I don't know of any way you can get Albin oral suspension.
- 24:09Tyce Erickson: Um, besides from a vet's office, but it's just, sometimes dogs don't, vets, veterinarians, sorry, dogs, veterinarians don't know your situation.
- 24:23Tyce Erickson: And just like your kids or your dog, sometimes you know, okay, they may have gotten into this water, they may have done these things.
- 24:30Tyce Erickson: And so, when a dog is sick, just like a human being, what are the main symptoms?
- 24:36Tyce Erickson: Lethargy.
- 24:38Tyce Erickson: Diarrhea and vomiting.
- 24:40Tyce Erickson: Those are the main things, just like humans.
- 24:42Tyce Erickson: We don't feel good.
- 24:43Tyce Erickson: We're lethargic.
- 24:43Tyce Erickson: We want to lay in bed.
- 24:44Tyce Erickson: We don't feel good.
- 24:46Tyce Erickson: Um, maybe we'll throw up, or maybe we'll have diarrhea.
- 24:49Tyce Erickson: Dogs are, they're a living creature just like us, and those are the main ones.
- 24:55Tyce Erickson: Now, if your dog has some eye, some eye boogers or something like that, or it's shaking its head, obviously those things seem to be a little more minuscule, minuscule.
- 25:04Tyce Erickson: It could be just an allergies or something like that that are bugging the dog.
- 25:08Tyce Erickson: But we're talking about bigger, bigger symptoms here.
- 25:11Tyce Erickson: So, uh, lethargy again, vomiting, diarrhea.
- 25:16Tyce Erickson: So if you're seeing these things and they're chronic and the dog is not acting itself, and it's not getting better after a few days or maybe less, again, you got to read your dog.
- 25:25Tyce Erickson: These are some tools or some things you can kind of consider looking at.
- 25:30Tyce Erickson: One, I'm going to talk about some things that maybe you can cross off the list.
- 25:37Tyce Erickson: Okay, ingestion.
- 25:38Tyce Erickson: Dig.
- 25:39Tyce Erickson: Did my dog ingest anything that could have that's causing, that's, that's blocked the intestinal track of the animal?
- 25:49Tyce Erickson: Did my dog eat a sock?
- 25:50Tyce Erickson: Dogs commonly love to eat kids' socks or just socks around the house.
- 25:54Tyce Erickson: If you have a dog that's in the house lots of times they'll eat socks.
- 25:57Tyce Erickson: We've had clients, dogs, they've, they've brought'em to us and they've, they told us they've eaten balls.
- 26:02Tyce Erickson: Rocks is another one.
- 26:04Tyce Erickson: If your dog stops eating.
- 26:07Tyce Erickson: He starts acting lethargic and he is not passing a stool.
- 26:13Tyce Erickson: That could be a possibility.
- 26:15Tyce Erickson: And an x ray from your vet's office could help to knock that out.
- 26:19Tyce Erickson: Just to make sure the intestinal tract is clear.
- 26:21Tyce Erickson: And you're going to want to jump on that one quicker than later because they're going to need to cut out part of that intestinal tract.
- 26:27Tyce Erickson: and stitch it back together because it, because that'll actually cause that part of that intestinal tract to die off, um, being blocked.
- 26:36Tyce Erickson: So blockages, I would say, are, can be a really common one.
- 26:42Tyce Erickson: So just be kind of aware of that.
- 26:45Tyce Erickson: If the dog's lethargic, again, water.
- 26:48Tyce Erickson: Especially hunting dogs, if they're drinking out of a lake or a pond, um, they start, You're looking for blood in the diarrhea, blood in their stools, and it's diarrhea and watery and it's, and it stays consistent.
- 27:02Tyce Erickson: That can be possibly they've picked up Giardia or a protozoa or some type of bug that the dog actually has a hard time absorbing protein.
- 27:14Tyce Erickson: And what'll happen, they're sloughing off proteins.
- 27:16Tyce Erickson: They might eat or drink a lot.
- 27:18Tyce Erickson: Um, and then that protein is just being, is just slipping out of their body.
- 27:22Tyce Erickson: And now because the protein isn't being absorbed and they can't hold their weight.
- 27:26Tyce Erickson: So they're going to start getting skinny.
- 27:28Tyce Erickson: Obviously, maybe they might start getting lethargic if they're not holding weight.
- 27:32Tyce Erickson: And so again, again, kind of having that metronidazole or picking up some fembendazole or something, just kind of throwing it at them, um, can help.
- 27:42Tyce Erickson: Again, I'm not saying don't go to a vet's office, but sometimes these days, vet's office can be hard to get them into, or you're going out of town or it's a weekend or you're out hunting for a week in the Dakotas and there's no vets around or whatever.
- 27:55Tyce Erickson: These might be good to have on hand.
- 27:57Tyce Erickson: So.
- 27:58Tyce Erickson: I'm going to rewind back to my puppies that had picked up this bug that we'd never had this issue with.
- 28:05Tyce Erickson: Well, so we tried metronidazole, we tried IVs, we tried actually plasma, um, we tried, um, uh, blood transfusions on them.
- 28:16Tyce Erickson: I mean, this was thousands of dollars on these dogs that we were just working on trying to figure it out.
- 28:22Tyce Erickson: One puppy had gone home and the things we hadn't tried when I looked at that list, it actually gone to another vet's office was fenbendazole and oral albin suspension.
- 28:33Tyce Erickson: So I told the vet.
- 28:35Tyce Erickson: If we tried that, they said, no, we haven't.
- 28:37Tyce Erickson: I said, why not?
- 28:39Tyce Erickson: They said, well, we can do it.
- 28:41Tyce Erickson: Is it going to hurt the dog?
- 28:42Tyce Erickson: No.
- 28:43Tyce Erickson: Okay.
- 28:43Tyce Erickson: So let's do it.
- 28:44Tyce Erickson: So we put them on all the puppies on fenbendazole or an oral albin suspension.
- 28:50Tyce Erickson: I think it was again, go off the weights that you can find online.
- 28:54Tyce Erickson: I think it was 0.
- 28:55Tyce Erickson: 25 milliliters per pound of the dogs for the fenbendazole.
- 29:00Tyce Erickson: And then the albino oral suspension might have been 0.
- 29:04Tyce Erickson: 5 milliliters twice a day.
- 29:09Tyce Erickson: I'm just throwing out, I can't remember.
- 29:10Tyce Erickson: It's been a little bit of time since we've done that.
- 29:12Tyce Erickson: Again, research how much to give the animal.
- 29:16Tyce Erickson: Well, we had a, um, another litter of puppies starting to come down with the same symptoms.
- 29:22Tyce Erickson: Um, and the puppies that had come, we actually had some puppies come back from the vet's office that they were starting to eat.
- 29:29Tyce Erickson: They were starting to gain a little weight, but their stools were a little bit loose.
- 29:33Tyce Erickson: So I put all those puppies on Fembenazole and Alvin Oral Suspension with a day or two.
- 29:38Tyce Erickson: They were completely, their stools were completely back to normal.
- 29:41Tyce Erickson: Their energy was back.
- 29:43Tyce Erickson: They started putting on weight.
- 29:44Tyce Erickson: They started eating.
- 29:45Tyce Erickson: And it, and they were completely fine after that and have had no issues ever since then.
- 29:50Tyce Erickson: So.
- 29:50Tyce Erickson: It took drugs and IVs and all these different things to kind of try to figure out.
- 29:57Tyce Erickson: What the heck was going on with these dogs.
- 29:59Tyce Erickson: And to this day, we don't really know exactly what it was.
- 30:03Tyce Erickson: We know it wasn't Giardia cause we had like six tests done.
- 30:06Tyce Erickson: And cause, um, again, Giardia, you're basically just trying to keep them hydrated and let it run its course and kind of get them through it or not Giardia.
- 30:15Tyce Erickson: I'm sorry.
- 30:16Tyce Erickson: Um, having a brain fart.
- 30:19Tyce Erickson: Uh, it'll come to me.
- 30:24Tyce Erickson: Parvo.
- 30:25Tyce Erickson: Parvo is the one that's a puppy killer and according to my knowledge you gotta run to the IV, keep fluids in them, keep them eating and let them work that through.
- 30:35Tyce Erickson: It was not Parvo because we did all these tests and they kept coming back negative.
- 30:39Tyce Erickson: So it's something else that these Puppies, it was, it was really working these dogs and it was more, they were fine up until they came, they were weaning them off mother's milk.
- 30:48Tyce Erickson: And then when they started coming off mother's milk, that's where we saw the issue.
- 30:53Tyce Erickson: So I'm going to go back to this.
- 30:55Tyce Erickson: If you have a puppy or you have a dog that's acting sick, Again, a lot of stuff is in the gut, and now if your dog obviously has cancer or something severe like this, obviously metronidazole or any of these is not gonna fix that.
- 31:14Tyce Erickson: You're gonna have to go and uh, you know, actually get the dog in the vet, do blood work, really find out what's going on, if there's an organ issue or something along the lines.
- 31:24Tyce Erickson: I would say just being around dogs for 17 years.
- 31:29Tyce Erickson: That is going to be a rarity, especially in your younger dogs, having an issue with organs or cancer or something along those lines.
- 31:38Tyce Erickson: I'd say most of it is environmental, picking it up in the field, picking it up in the marsh, you know, these type things.
- 31:44Tyce Erickson: So things I would recommend, again, having on hand or kind of having in the back of your mind, metronidazole, fembendazole.
- 31:52Tyce Erickson: If you need to try some albinoral suspension, you're going to have to pick that up to your vet or maybe recommend it or say, Hey, what do you think about this?
- 32:01Tyce Erickson: Is, is this a possibility that we could try, you know, after we ran these puppies and worked them through these things, of course, we gave them probiotics to rebuild the gut to help them, um, put the good bacteria back in their gut after we had cleaned the bugs out that they had picked up.
- 32:18Tyce Erickson: And, um, we kept a puppy out of that litter.
- 32:21Tyce Erickson: to this day.
- 32:23Tyce Erickson: No issues.
- 32:24Tyce Erickson: Stools are fine and dogs are doing great.
- 32:26Tyce Erickson: So, um, if I would have maybe known these things, I could have maybe saved myself thousands of dollars and kind of almost assisted, you know, the vet and kind of, Hey, let's, could we try these things?
- 32:41Tyce Erickson: You know, is this going to really hurt the dog if we try these things or give them these options and maybe could have cleaned things out a little faster.
- 32:48Tyce Erickson: Again, I'm not a vet, I'm not a professional on it.
- 32:51Tyce Erickson: These are just things that I've seen that have worked.
- 32:54Tyce Erickson: Um, for, you know, my dogs or clients dogs have come in and had issues.
- 33:01Tyce Erickson: So, uh, let's just kind of do a quick review again and then we'll wrap this puppy up.
- 33:07Tyce Erickson: But again, I would recommend having a stapler.
- 33:10Tyce Erickson: You can get to staple wounds together.
- 33:12Tyce Erickson: Um, I would recommend, um, some, uh, Oh, my brain is also also not iodine that you can use to kind of flush the wounds out, um, some syringes to be able to do so, um, uh, some gauze to wrap the ACE bandages, uh, metronidazole, fenbendazole.
- 33:36Tyce Erickson: Also, it wouldn't hurt to get some amoxicillin that you can have on hand.
- 33:39Tyce Erickson: Amoxicillin can also be used for Um, certain things and again you can get these all through the aquatic pharmacies kind of a, it's kind of a loophole that you can have some of these drugs on hand because most of the time a vet is not going to give them to you.
- 33:54Tyce Erickson: So, um, again, there is potential side effects and you can read the side effects and decide on those.
- 34:03Tyce Erickson: But again, I would say these are.
- 34:06Tyce Erickson: If you can't get them into a vet, kind of going to be a last resort thing.
- 34:09Tyce Erickson: So anyhow, hopefully everyone's having a good hunting season.
- 34:15Tyce Erickson: Hopefully your dogs are all safe.
- 34:16Tyce Erickson: All of them are healthy, but, uh, keep an eye out on these things.
- 34:22Tyce Erickson: Um, And when I say these things, I'm going to refer to keep, have these things on hand.
- 34:30Tyce Erickson: And again, when you look at your animal, if he starts acting not normal, just like if you have your child sums up, he's acting weak, he's not being himself and this stays prolonged and the dog, you know, has chronic diarrhea or chronic throw up, and it's not getting better.
- 34:50Tyce Erickson: That is an alarm.
- 34:51Tyce Erickson: So you're going to want to look and I would say if it doesn't get better, this is just me.
- 34:56Tyce Erickson: After two, three days, symptoms are staying the same.
- 35:02Tyce Erickson: Um, you know, you're going to want to get that dog into a vet's office.
- 35:05Tyce Erickson: And if you can't get them in, maybe some of these things that we shared with you today could help you out.
- 35:09Tyce Erickson: So anyhow, everyone, hope you're having a great day.
