• 0:53
Speaker 4: Lisa Odie and Hollis Lewis, Hello, Hello and uh we.
• 1:00
Speaker 4: Today has been one of those days when there's there's
• 1:03
Speaker 4: so many different types of topics in it all over
• 1:06
Speaker 4: the place, and we've been trying to figure out exactly
• 1:09
Speaker 4: where we were going to go and so but the
• 1:12
Speaker 4: first one that I think that I thought was really
• 1:15
Speaker 4: really interesting was the situation with Rich Rodd at WVU.
• 1:20
Speaker 4: They've actually have fifty nine new players now that's a lot.
• 1:28
  Speaker 3: That's a team. I mean, that's basically a team, you know.
• 1:33
Speaker 4: And and my and my question in that is.
• 1:39
Speaker 5: Is that isn't that the most Hollis and Division one
• 1:41
  Speaker 5: was that crazy?
• 1:42
  Speaker 2: Right now?
• 1:42
Speaker 3: Yeah? Right now? Yeah, that's that's the top. Yeah, have you?
• 1:48
Speaker 3: Are you changing? Are you?
• 1:50
Speaker 4: My thing to that is, let's say that the old
• 1:53
Speaker 4: WVU was doing this type of defense, this type of offense,
• 1:57
Speaker 4: and the players that I have and the offense in
• 2:00
Speaker 4: the defense that I'm going to do, maybe they don't
• 2:03
  Speaker 4: fit it. But I don't even think it's a matter
• 2:06
Speaker 4: whether they fit it or not. I think this is
• 2:08
Speaker 4: just the reality of what and again we beat the
• 2:11
Speaker 4: subject up to death, but this is the reality of
• 2:13
Speaker 4: college sports. Bobby Hurley coach at Connecticut. I think they
• 2:18
Speaker 4: won a championship last year. He's going to fifty. His
• 2:22
Speaker 4: team is going to be different.
• 2:24
  Speaker 3: You know.
• 2:24
Speaker 4: I was watching an interview where he was saying that,
• 2:27
Speaker 4: and if like, you're a new coach, and he was
• 2:28
Speaker 4: a head coach somewhere else, you're going to bring other
• 2:31
Speaker 4: players with you. So it's going to be whether regardless
• 2:33
Speaker 4: of whether it's new system, same system, the reality is
• 2:37
Speaker 4: if you get a new coach, go ahead and get
• 2:39
Speaker 4: prepared to get a new team.
• 2:40
Speaker 5: And that's pretty much been historically true, right, I mean degree, not.
• 2:45
Speaker 3: To this degree, I think.
• 2:47
Speaker 4: I think what you would do is you go out
• 2:49
Speaker 4: and you look for the players or position players that
• 2:53
Speaker 4: you needed and feel them. You're not like or you
• 2:56
Speaker 4: might bring your quarterback, your center, your line. Yeah, but
• 2:59
Speaker 4: I mean fifty nine is like office defense specialty.
• 3:03
Speaker 6: You know now that you said that they would have
• 3:06
Speaker 6: to sit out a year right if they were. So
• 3:09
Speaker 6: that's why it didn't happen quite a true.
• 3:11
Speaker 4: I mean, and then you got Arizona at fifty three,
• 3:13
Speaker 4: you got Mississippi State at fifty one. So the top three,
• 3:16
Speaker 4: I mean, you're talking about fifty and nobody is under
• 3:19
Speaker 4: forty five. I shouldn't say an nobody's but of the
• 3:23
Speaker 4: top teams, nobody the least amount of players that they've
• 3:28
Speaker 4: that they have replaced brought in forty five.
• 3:32
  Speaker 3: That's wow.
• 3:33
  Speaker 4: Man.
• 3:33
Speaker 6: Now, I wonder how many of those teams have a
• 3:35
Speaker 6: new head coach besides WVU.
• 3:37
Speaker 5: That would be interesting.
• 3:38
  Speaker 4: I'm sure, I'm sure there's something that there's got to
• 3:41
Speaker 4: be a few of them. Sure, But even at that, man,
• 3:45
Speaker 4: I mean you know, you're just getting ready to start
• 3:47
Speaker 4: spring ball. I mean, because you look at like North
• 3:49
Speaker 4: Carolina has a new coach. Obviously WVU has a new coach.
• 3:55
Speaker 4: I'm thinking Arkansas may have a new coach.
• 3:58
Speaker 5: And they're they're in that lineup right with I.
• 4:01
Speaker 4: Said, if you get it, like I said, it's almost
• 4:03
Speaker 4: a guarantee if you get a new coach in college football.
• 4:05
Speaker 4: To ask that college sports today, particularly basketball football, you're
• 4:10
Speaker 4: gonna have a new squad and go ahead.
• 4:15
Speaker 3: So you're saying that, and I think that's true.
• 4:20
Speaker 4: My question, Lisa is, so when my coach leaves, do
• 4:26
Speaker 4: I need to start thinking about where?
• 4:28
Speaker 3: Where am I gonna pack my bags? How I'm gonna
• 4:30
  Speaker 3: pack my bags?
• 4:31
Speaker 4: Because because I'm either gonna get sent or I'm gonna leave,
• 4:35
  Speaker 4: Am I right?
• 4:36
  Speaker 3: I mean?
• 4:36
Speaker 6: I mean, I mean yes, fundamentally, either you're gonna sit
• 4:41
Speaker 6: or you're gonna leave. But also I think too, not
• 4:43
Speaker 6: only you have to look at whether you're a philosophy's
• 4:45
Speaker 6: lineup with the same coach because what the rules were
• 4:48
Speaker 6: and what the you know, the expectations were of the
• 4:51
Speaker 6: former coach may not be the same as the new
• 4:54
Speaker 6: one coming in. So you got to make sure you're
• 4:55
Speaker 6: ready for that too, because already rich Rod's had some
• 4:58
Speaker 6: things out there and so media that he's he's made
• 5:01
  Speaker 6: some changes and they're and they're they're I mean, they're
• 5:04
Speaker 6: pretty they're pretty out there. He's pretty pretty.
• 5:07
Speaker 3: TikTok dances. Yeah, I'm gonna say, do you want to?
• 5:10
Speaker 3: You want to? Got to read it out.
• 5:11
Speaker 4: A little piece of that, you know, that's that's Yeah,
• 5:14
Speaker 4: the one I know is TikTok dances, and that's big.
• 5:17
Speaker 4: You know, That's what players do, That's what young kids do.
• 5:19
Speaker 4: That's what young people do. Yeah, you know what I'm saying.
• 5:22
Speaker 4: So again, I think that's one he'll probably eventually lose.
• 5:26
Speaker 3: You think you'll lose that.
• 5:27
Speaker 4: You're gonna lose that one eventually. That's just what they
• 5:30
Speaker 4: do now, you know, that's part of who they are.
• 5:33
Speaker 6: Yeah, for sure, You're right, that's all. That's what kids do,
• 5:36
Speaker 6: adults for that matter.
• 5:38
Speaker 4: Let me ask a question, Lisa, do you think far
• 5:41
Speaker 4: as the movement of college football, do you think it's
• 5:44
Speaker 4: anything other than for the sake of movement. Do you think,
• 5:48
Speaker 4: like now, kids aren't necessarily looking at I mean, I
• 5:52
Speaker 4: guess they would consider philosophy and playing time and all
• 5:54
Speaker 4: these other factors. But do you think some of it
• 5:57
Speaker 4: is just saying, hey, I've been here two years, this
• 5:59
Speaker 4: is time to go some where else. I want to
• 6:00
Speaker 4: try something else just for the sake of doing it.
• 6:02
  Speaker 5: Yeah.
• 6:02
  Speaker 6: Sure, I mean they've got a they've got a passport
• 6:04
Speaker 6: to go wherever they want, whenever they want.
• 6:08
Speaker 5: I mean pretty much.
• 6:09
Speaker 6: I mean, so you know, if they if they think
• 6:10
Speaker 6: that the pastors are greener somewhere else, why not go
• 6:13
  Speaker 6: try it up.
• 6:13
Speaker 4: Well, do you think it's even a matter of pastors
• 6:15
Speaker 4: green and somewhere else, or you're just moving just because
• 6:18
Speaker 4: I just want I just want to go somewhere, Like
• 6:20
Speaker 4: I literally think, like I've heard like Kevin Durant say
• 6:23
Speaker 4: something similar where he's just like basically, I'm just going
• 6:26
Speaker 4: other places just to try it all. I just think
• 6:28
  Speaker 4: I personally think that they there's a there's a there's
• 6:31
Speaker 4: an idea of all. Right, I was here, I know
• 6:36
Speaker 4: exactly what it is, what's happening here. Now, let me
• 6:41
Speaker 4: see if I can go somewhere else, regardless of whether
• 6:45
Speaker 4: or not I had success or failure where my original
• 6:50
Speaker 4: home is. I have to put my name out there
• 6:54
Speaker 4: because I think I can go somewhere else and maybe
• 6:58
  Speaker 4: it's just better. And I just don't under like, I
• 7:01
  Speaker 4: don't I don't understand that.
• 7:05
Speaker 3: See I understand it. I don't like it, but I said,
• 7:08
  Speaker 3: I get it.
• 7:09
Speaker 4: It's just I think far as the continuity of you know,
• 7:12
Speaker 4: what we've known is like college sports has changed, and
• 7:15
Speaker 4: it's it's hard to keep up, you know what I mean,
• 7:18
Speaker 4: It's hard to keep up because when you don't have
• 7:20
Speaker 4: this guy I was thinking about, like a guy like
• 7:21
Speaker 4: Tim Duncan, right, he was just he probably could have
• 7:24
Speaker 4: left after his freshman year, but he stayed at Wake
• 7:27
Speaker 4: Forest for like four years and it was a staple
• 7:29
Speaker 4: and you knew he was going to be there. And
• 7:31
Speaker 4: I just don't know if you're going to have like
• 7:32
Speaker 4: those type of guys like moving forward, you know, any longer.
• 7:36
Speaker 3: And I think that's why, you know, even like kind
• 7:38
Speaker 3: of the law of like college.
• 7:39
Speaker 4: Sports for women is going to grow if they can
• 7:43
Speaker 4: sort of maintain the continuity that doesn't exist in men's sports.
• 7:47
Speaker 3: In that good point, I really hope.
• 7:49
Speaker 4: That the women women's sports, they don't they don't open
• 7:53
Speaker 4: that door. I just think that it's just so inviting
• 7:57
  Speaker 4: and it's and sometimes it's it's for your ego. I'm
• 8:00
Speaker 4: going to get out there and see who's all out there.
• 8:03
Speaker 4: It's likely who wants me, who wants me, you know,
• 8:06
Speaker 4: and not appreciative of who's got you already. You know
• 8:11
Speaker 4: what I'm saying, Because there's some appreciation that you have
• 8:15
Speaker 4: to give to a place that you played, you produced,
• 8:19
Speaker 4: they appreciated you, they cheered for you, and now you're
• 8:23
Speaker 4: just up and leaving solely because I want to see
• 8:27
  Speaker 4: what's out there.
• 8:28
Speaker 6: Yeah, and I think to it also depends on the
• 8:30
Speaker 6: skill set of the player, like some players are. Just
• 8:33
Speaker 6: if you're at that elite level excuse me that you
• 8:35
Speaker 6: know you're playing and you want better nil, then you're
• 8:39
Speaker 6: going to be more specific about where you're going. Your
• 8:41
Speaker 6: passport's going to be a little more limited. Whereas if
• 8:43
Speaker 6: you're just a player that you know, you're just out
• 8:45
Speaker 6: there having a good time and want to see what
• 8:47
Speaker 6: things are about, you're just going to go out there.
• 8:48
Speaker 3: And I totally agree with that.
• 8:52
Speaker 4: But there's been players who have jumped out there into
• 8:55
Speaker 4: the portal and not getting hit. Yes, a lot, you know,
• 9:00
Speaker 4: there's a lot of them because because again you got it,
• 9:05
Speaker 4: you gotta have had you gotta have body of work,
• 9:09
Speaker 4: you know, to get it to get in the pot.
• 9:10
  Speaker 4: You can't say well, because I wasn't playing. I was
• 9:13
Speaker 4: sitting behind Hollis. I'm just gonna jump into the portal
• 9:16
Speaker 4: and hope somebody's gonna get me. Dude, you ain't got
• 9:18
Speaker 4: no film. We don't know nothing about you. Why Yeah,
• 9:23
Speaker 4: And like, and we're about to have some guests on
• 9:26
Speaker 4: here in a couple of minutes, and I just want
• 9:27
Speaker 4: to give a little opening. Uh, We're gonna talk to
• 9:30
Speaker 4: some track athletes and and and I'm all right, and
• 9:33
Speaker 4: I want to know and I know like you ran
• 9:36
Speaker 4: track in college, you ran track in high school. And
• 9:42
Speaker 4: I think it's one of those things where we're starting
• 9:44
Speaker 4: to slowly get back to track because I think particularly
• 9:47
Speaker 4: for football players and just athletes in general, we're seeing
• 9:50
Speaker 4: the importance of it. So I think we gotta we
• 9:52
Speaker 4: gotta guess on the line.
• 9:53
Speaker 3: Can you hear me? All right?
• 9:57
Speaker 4: Uh? And this is a coach for West Virginia State
• 10:01
Speaker 4: University track team. Now, brother, how you say your last name?
• 10:05
Speaker 4: We took three of us. We think we got Yeah,
• 10:12
  Speaker 4: it's John boys.
• 10:14
  Speaker 7: Boys.
• 10:21
Speaker 4: I think I got the first part right, But so
• 10:25
Speaker 4: so just tell us a little bit about yourself. Like
• 10:28
Speaker 4: I mentioned you the track coach at the West Virginia
• 10:31
Speaker 4: State University. The track team both men and women, have
• 10:34
Speaker 4: seen some pretty historical success over the last two seasons
• 10:37
Speaker 4: for an upstart program. So kind of what's your background coach?
• 10:42
Speaker 7: Oh, for sure, Yeah, you can't forget cross country as well.
• 10:46
Speaker 7: We do have cross country. But my background is I'm
• 10:49
Speaker 7: originally from Harford, Connecticut. You know, I went to school
• 10:53
Speaker 7: in Connecticut. My mom worked in the court system. My
• 10:57
Speaker 7: dad worked as he worked for elevated selles, elevated parts
• 11:01
Speaker 7: and things like that. But my background really I was
• 11:04
Speaker 7: a multi sport athlete Boston soccer and track and field,
• 11:08
  Speaker 7: a little bit of football. But I got a bachelor's
• 11:11
Speaker 7: degree in sports education and kinesiology and a master's degree
• 11:15
Speaker 7: in health administration. I got my master by the time
• 11:19
Speaker 7: I was twenty one. But just my work, ethic and everything,
• 11:23
Speaker 7: I owe it to my parents and my grandmother, where
• 11:27
Speaker 7: we just taught that we always got to come to
• 11:30
Speaker 7: the table with half right. So when I took over
• 11:34
Speaker 7: this program at West Virginia State, I've seen a gold mine.
• 11:38
Speaker 7: In my opinion. I had about maybe ten other job offers.
• 11:41
Speaker 7: But I've seen locations, I've seen how close you were
• 11:44
Speaker 7: to ideal cities and things like that, and I knew
• 11:48
Speaker 7: if it was built right that it would sell and
• 11:51
  Speaker 7: be marketable.
• 11:53
Speaker 4: Now, where were you at prior to prior to coming
• 11:56
Speaker 4: to Stay? Where was your coaching jobs before that?
• 12:00
Speaker 7: I see, that's interesting. So my first coaching job was
• 12:04
Speaker 7: a graduate assistant position at Regis's College. I graduated college
• 12:10
Speaker 7: undergrad and then I went to Canada for a year
• 12:13
Speaker 7: to run pro but my time in Canada. Within six
• 12:17
Speaker 7: months in Canada, I got a phone call to do
• 12:20
  Speaker 7: a free master's degree as a graduate assistant. So I
• 12:23
Speaker 7: took that opportunity because I knew there wasn't many opportunities
• 12:27
Speaker 7: to get a free master's degree, especially at a school
• 12:29
Speaker 7: like Regi's College when it's around sixty to seventy thousand.
• 12:32
  Speaker 6: Dollars a year.
• 12:33
  Speaker 3: Wow.
• 12:34
Speaker 7: So that from there, graduating from there, I brought that
• 12:37
Speaker 7: program they first All American and nationals with Fatima Saint Hilaire,
• 12:42
Speaker 7: and we won the conference on the many and women's
• 12:45
Speaker 7: side two years straight that I was there and broke
• 12:47
Speaker 7: every school record multiple times. So from there, I went
• 12:50
Speaker 7: to Utica College in Upstate, New York and I was
• 12:53
Speaker 7: under Jim Lemu as an assistant coach now and went
• 12:58
Speaker 7: there and we broke almost every school record and we
• 13:00
Speaker 7: took I think six kids to nationals as well. But
• 13:05
Speaker 7: our mentored My mentors have been Harvard and Keppa at
• 13:09
Speaker 7: Harvard as well. And then I went to LESA McCrae
• 13:12
Speaker 7: in North Carolina and uh we we brought them their
• 13:16
Speaker 7: first All American indoors along with two other three national
• 13:20
Speaker 7: qualifiers as well. Then I went to Post University and
• 13:26
Speaker 7: I took a program in Connecticut. It was close to
• 13:29
Speaker 7: their home, and I thought it was monkling, you know
• 13:32
Speaker 7: what I mean, But you know, God reminded me, like, nah,
• 13:35
Speaker 7: it's so they they announced it like it within three
• 13:39
Speaker 7: months to take a job. They pulled me into the
• 13:41
Speaker 7: office and they go, hey, we're gonna cut the track program,
• 13:44
Speaker 7: but we're gonna keep it online. You could keep the pay,
• 13:47
Speaker 7: but we don't want you to bring anybody else in.
• 13:51
Speaker 7: And I made the decision to leave. I said, you
• 13:54
Speaker 7: know what, I'm gonna leave. I did a lot of
• 13:55
Speaker 7: interviewing at a few schools and I took the job
• 13:59
Speaker 7: at Jinia State University. I do have some family members
• 14:02
Speaker 7: that graduated from there, and it just seemed like the
• 14:06
Speaker 7: right thing to do at the time.
• 14:08
Speaker 3: I'm glad you took it.
• 14:09
Speaker 4: Yes, sir, Hey, So this is Curlee Man and I
• 14:12
Speaker 4: coached football there and I've always thought that football athletes
• 14:18
Speaker 4: should run track. You ain't never told me that because
• 14:21
  Speaker 4: you couldn't.
• 14:23
Speaker 3: I hear, yeah, So ignoring him.
• 14:32
Speaker 4: So one of one of the interesting things that I'm
• 14:35
Speaker 4: wondering is are you recruiting these players coming in or
• 14:40
Speaker 4: have you been able to get a couple of football players,
• 14:43
Speaker 4: a couple of basketball players, a couple of people from campus,
• 14:45
Speaker 4: or how have you actually managed to where are you
• 14:50
Speaker 4: finding these athletes from?
• 14:53
Speaker 7: I think I just built my brand. I used to
• 14:55
Speaker 7: do a lot of private coaching still to this day,
• 14:58
Speaker 7: our private coach Professional Professional MMA. But I've always delivered
• 15:04
Speaker 7: my promises. So I remember our coaches, King named Joe
• 15:07
Speaker 7: in Massachusetts. He was a He was a Caucasian mail
• 15:10
Speaker 7: about six foot five, two thirty and his grandfather paid
• 15:14
Speaker 7: me to train him in the forty yard dash. He's like,
• 15:17
Speaker 7: I need him to go sub you know, sub five seconds.
• 15:20
Speaker 7: So y'all actually won a championship at Auburndy University as
• 15:24
Speaker 7: I think at a lineman. But I remember they gave
• 15:26
Speaker 7: me a month and I got him down to four
• 15:28
Speaker 7: to seven at like and his weight dropped down I
• 15:30
Speaker 7: think two thirty. I think he came in at two fifty.
• 15:33
Speaker 7: So if you look at my track record, no matter
• 15:36
Speaker 7: what school I've been at, I've always brought in fifty
• 15:39
Speaker 7: to thirty kids every year. I've always broken records every year.
• 15:43
Speaker 7: And I haven't had one university that I've been at
• 15:45
  Speaker 7: that I didn't have a national qualifier. But I just
• 15:50
Speaker 7: I've been looking for my moment. But based off my
• 15:54
Speaker 7: motivation and my drive, the opportunities was really never there.
• 15:57
Speaker 7: I always had to work under somebody, a boss, always
• 16:00
Speaker 7: get a promotion somewhere else, and I had the experience.
• 16:03
Speaker 7: My best friend is kay Don Samuel's.
• 16:04
Speaker 4: National You want to jump in, and I think the
• 16:08
Speaker 4: more the question is is like, are the athletes that
• 16:11
Speaker 4: you currently have on the team, are they coming are
• 16:13
Speaker 4: they already like playing other sports at West Virginia State,
• 16:15
Speaker 4: or they're being being recruited to come in and run.
• 16:19
Speaker 7: They're being recruited. They're being recruited, but sure, you know,
• 16:22
Speaker 7: I think a mindset was to bring in uh, you know,
• 16:25
Speaker 7: bring kids that was already But when I got there,
• 16:28
Speaker 7: I realized to have a perfect formula to to build
• 16:31
Speaker 7: a team so quick. I had to bring in kids
• 16:33
Speaker 7: that knew nothing about the university and that I could
• 16:36
Speaker 7: mold and create a championship mentality. Not saying the other
• 16:40
Speaker 7: sports don't have a championship mentality, but you know, if
• 16:44
Speaker 7: you're in track, there's a speciftic mentality. One hundred is
• 16:50
Speaker 7: not good enough sometimes.
• 16:51
Speaker 5: Yeah, high coach, this is Lisa Odie. How are you, Tony?
• 16:55
Speaker 5: Thanks well, good, thanks thanks for coming on the show.
• 16:59
Speaker 5: I just have a quick questquestion about the way you
• 17:01
Speaker 5: typically have a track practice for your players.
• 17:05
Speaker 6: How do you structure it to address like the different
• 17:09
Speaker 6: athletic needs and abilities of your of your kids.
• 17:11
Speaker 7: Great question, So I mean for me, I'll shoot you.
• 17:15
Speaker 7: I worked probably fifteen or seventeen hours a day and
• 17:18
Speaker 7: that's all season long, that's three seasons. So I will
• 17:22
Speaker 7: we start, I wake up five am every morning, we
• 17:25
Speaker 7: drive them over to Lailey Phiel. We probably start practice
• 17:28
Speaker 7: around six o'clock wow, and then we have two groups.
• 17:31
Speaker 7: We layer it so I have a six am group
• 17:34
Speaker 7: of seven am group and an eight am group, and
• 17:36
Speaker 7: we kind of layered practice so when one come in,
• 17:38
Speaker 7: one is finishing up and we'll go based off event groups.
• 17:42
Speaker 7: The only event groups I don't coach as of right
• 17:44
Speaker 7: now is the throats. Last year I coached everything by myself.
• 17:48
Speaker 7: But we will go in especially and what helps me
• 17:53
Speaker 7: is in the preseason I will do a range of
• 17:55
Speaker 7: motion testing and I'll have them come in through things
• 17:59
Speaker 7: like Olympic List. I have a pet coming Thomas. He
• 18:03
Speaker 7: helps me for free, but we'll accept them early in
• 18:06
Speaker 7: season to know what every athlete individual need is and
• 18:09
Speaker 7: from there I will go in and I'll build a
• 18:12
Speaker 7: twenty seven week program understanding that that might change, but
• 18:16
Speaker 7: we will have something to go off and.
• 18:19
Speaker 4: We don't have much time, so I know currently, you
• 18:22
Speaker 4: guys had a very successful season this year and you
• 18:25
Speaker 4: got one of our favorites.
• 18:26
Speaker 3: We actually interviewed her. We got Candas.
• 18:28
Speaker 4: You guys are at Nationals right now, so just tell
• 18:31
Speaker 4: us a little bit about that experience. Is like taking
• 18:33
Speaker 4: an athlete like Candas who's a local athlete.
• 18:36
Speaker 3: Ranted. Capital has had a great career so far as state.
• 18:39
Speaker 3: Now you are Nationals.
• 18:41
Speaker 7: Now working with Kandas has been amazing. I actually did
• 18:44
Speaker 7: a whole research project on Candas.
• 18:48
  Speaker 1: Man.
• 18:51
Speaker 7: She should have been here last year, but she was
• 18:54
Speaker 7: always sick. So I sat Candas down, I said, what
• 18:56
Speaker 7: should go? She's you know, she said she wanted to
• 18:58
Speaker 7: run pro. I said, man, I've been around professional athletes
• 19:01
Speaker 7: my whole life. This is what it's going to take.
• 19:03
Speaker 7: I said. The key ingredient is sacrificed.
• 19:05
  Speaker 1: Right.
• 19:06
Speaker 7: You can't You can't do both. You gotta sacrifice every day.
• 19:10
Speaker 7: So working with Canas when I got her, she definitely
• 19:13
Speaker 7: was talented. She was a diamond in the rough. But
• 19:16
Speaker 7: I've never seen someone so uncoordinated before. We spent the
• 19:21
Speaker 7: whole summer working together. You know, we spent summers planning communication.
• 19:26
Speaker 7: I mean, her work work is amazing. She'll text me
• 19:29
Speaker 7: at one am and watch her race and then say hey,
• 19:33
  Speaker 7: I've seen X, Y and Z. And she knows a
• 19:34
Speaker 7: month because she knows, she knows what's starting new programs
• 19:38
Speaker 7: that I gotta stay up long nights that come with
• 19:40
  Speaker 7: the territory.
• 19:41
Speaker 4: So we gotta bring me because I'm sorry, we gotta
• 19:44
Speaker 4: wrap it up. So just tell us just again, you
• 19:48
Speaker 4: guys made it to nationals. Like I said, I think
• 19:51
Speaker 4: you did ray well in the conference this year and
• 19:54
Speaker 4: last year. So just let people in and I want
• 19:56
Speaker 4: to say this before we go. You guys do an
• 19:58
Speaker 4: excellent job on social media, like you said, pitting the product,
• 20:01
Speaker 4: pitting the brand of West Virginia State track out there.
• 20:04
Speaker 3: So just tell people how they can find you.
• 20:08
Speaker 7: Yeah, you can find us on social media on Instagram.
• 20:12
Speaker 7: Our Instagram account is WV as you underscored TSXC. And
• 20:19
Speaker 7: then if you go online and just type in West
• 20:21
Speaker 7: Virginia State University, my contact information is on there. The
• 20:25
Speaker 7: main message I want to send to West Virginia if
• 20:27
Speaker 7: you if you talented and you know you, you know
• 20:29
Speaker 7: you got some talent and you just need to develop.
• 20:31
Speaker 7: This is a place where you could develop. No one
• 20:34
Speaker 7: here on the team was a fire star recruit. We all,
• 20:37
Speaker 7: all the asses us here have been developed. This is
• 20:40
Speaker 7: we're not looking for a finished product, but we're looking
• 20:43
  Speaker 7: to produce here.
• 20:44
Speaker 4: Nice coach, we appreciate you being on and promise you,
• 20:49
Speaker 4: me and Hollis at least will be down there to
• 20:51
Speaker 4: check it out. Come down and take a look at
• 20:53
Speaker 4: you and maybe we can steal lease since she can
• 20:55
  Speaker 4: get a chance.
• 20:55
Speaker 3: So we'll be down and check you out.
• 20:57
Speaker 5: Okay, thanks, that sounds good.
• 21:00
  Speaker 3: Thank you.
• 21:01
  Speaker 5: Thank you.
• 21:03
Speaker 4: So to me when I just in listening to him, Yeah,
• 21:13
Speaker 4: you don't really find track coaches. Quote track coaches that
• 21:19
Speaker 4: invested in and intense. That's you know, he could be
• 21:22
Speaker 4: a coach, he could be a football comer.
• 21:24
Speaker 3: And I love it.
• 21:25
Speaker 4: And I think just getting back to it when we
• 21:27
Speaker 4: because I know we spent a lot of time on
• 21:29
Speaker 4: this show talking about you know, athletes here locally, and
• 21:32
Speaker 4: one of the things I will always say is that
• 21:35
Speaker 4: we have to as far as football and basketball players
• 21:37
Speaker 4: develop athletes, boys and girls, we have to get back
• 21:40
  Speaker 4: to track.
• 21:41
  Speaker 7: We have.
• 21:42
Speaker 3: Track has got to be almost a baseline.
• 21:45
  Speaker 7: It is.
• 21:46
Speaker 4: I can tell people this. Without track, I don't have
• 21:51
Speaker 4: the football career that I have. It's it's speed, it's endurance,
• 21:57
Speaker 4: it's all of those kinds of things that you that
• 22:00
Speaker 4: you don't think matter. And I I was thinking about
• 22:03
Speaker 4: you last night and did your experience running track, because
• 22:07
Speaker 4: you know, it's kind of just you out there, did
• 22:09
Speaker 4: that correlate to your position playing cornerback, because it's like, really,
• 22:13
Speaker 4: I think if cornerback and track is almost kind of
• 22:15
Speaker 4: one to one. Really, it's just you it's it's yes,
• 22:20
Speaker 4: I think I think so. And part of that is
• 22:23
Speaker 4: is because speed is everything on the car. You know, Now,
• 22:29
Speaker 4: when I say everything like there's people who can run you.
• 22:32
Speaker 4: If you can be faster than a whole lot of folks,
• 22:36
Speaker 4: that makes the coverage a whole lot easier because you're
• 22:38
Speaker 4: not You're not worrying about that particular guy.
• 22:40
Speaker 3: That's just the mentality.
• 22:41
Speaker 6: You're just and conditioning. Doesn't it make it conditioning year round?
• 22:45
Speaker 6: I mean that way you're not losing so much over
• 22:47
Speaker 6: your your spring and summer months.
• 22:50
  Speaker 3: That's a good point.
• 22:51
Speaker 4: I'm talking about sixteen week workout playing, but four weeks
• 22:55
Speaker 4: of training camp for sixteen weeks or the season.
• 22:58
Speaker 3: So I'm putting in sixteen.
• 23:01
Speaker 4: Weeks, five days, five days a week now, all through
• 23:05
Speaker 4: the off season, just to get through four weeks of camp, right,
• 23:10
Speaker 4: and then sixteen games. The sixteen games is easy. Yeah, sure,
• 23:15
Speaker 4: you know, sure, camp is easy. Conditioning. I'm not worried
• 23:19
Speaker 4: about the conditioning. I don't have to worry about that, not,
• 23:21
Speaker 4: not with my off season program, right, you know. So
• 23:25
Speaker 4: we're getting ready to take a quick break and we
• 23:27
Speaker 4: will be right back.
• 23:28
Speaker 8: Let's face it, bad things happen to good people seriously
• 23:31

• 24:33
Speaker 4: we have a we have another guest.
• 24:34
Speaker 3: Yeah, we have another guy.
• 24:35
Speaker 4: And again on this show, we spend a lot of
• 24:37
Speaker 4: time talking about youth athletics, youth sports. You know coach
• 24:41
Speaker 4: he runs the youth program down at the City of
• 24:44
Speaker 4: South Charleston. We've all been involved with youth sports as
• 24:47
Speaker 4: some capacity. So we have a not not only a
• 24:50
Speaker 4: youth athlete on the line, but we have an all
• 24:54
Speaker 4: amerriage a national championship. Are you there, hello, Yes, I'm here,
• 25:02
Speaker 4: all right, So we have Ashlynd Newton. Newton, I mess
• 25:08
Speaker 4: up with your name?
• 25:09
Speaker 3: Hello? Hello? Hey, so hi.
• 25:16
  Speaker 9: Hello.
• 25:17
Speaker 4: So, first of all, congratulations you won from you won
• 25:21
Speaker 4: the long the national a you long jump, and then
• 25:25
Speaker 4: you got second place in the sixty meter hurdles.
• 25:28
  Speaker 3: Is that correct?
• 25:30
  Speaker 10: Yes, that's correct.
• 25:31
Speaker 3: Okay, So how was that experience?
• 25:35
Speaker 10: That experience was really kind of fun. I mean, well
• 25:40
Speaker 10: it was kind of hard to because in the sixty
• 25:43
Speaker 10: meter hurles I kind of fell started twice and that
• 25:47
Speaker 10: made me a little bit nervous going into the finals.
• 25:49
  Speaker 7: Sure.
• 25:49
Speaker 4: Yeah, so and talk to us about overcoming that adversity
• 25:53
Speaker 4: where like you were maybe afraid you won't get disqualified,
• 25:57
Speaker 4: and then you had to actually.
• 25:58
Speaker 3: Come back and then do the race. So So how
• 26:00
Speaker 3: was that? Just say, coming back from that?
• 26:04
Speaker 10: How was like coming back from that?
• 26:07
  Speaker 3: Yes, I was.
• 26:08
Speaker 10: I was just like, Okay, I got to pull it together.
• 26:11
Speaker 10: I just got to persevere and do it nice.
• 26:15
  Speaker 3: Ashley.
• 26:16
Speaker 4: This is this is Curl Lee and I And I'm
• 26:18
Speaker 4: sure that you you probably don't know anything about me.
• 26:21
Speaker 4: And I'm only going to preface this by saying, I
• 26:24
Speaker 4: was a professional athlete for quite a while and in
• 26:28
Speaker 4: high school I tried to run.
• 26:31
  Speaker 8: I was.
• 26:32
  Speaker 3: I was a track guy.
• 26:33
Speaker 4: Okay, And I love the hurdles, right, I loved them.
• 26:37
Speaker 4: I thought they were like the coolest thing ever. So
• 26:41
Speaker 4: I I tried to run the hurdles and I get
• 26:45
Speaker 4: into We're in the first meet.
• 26:47
  Speaker 2: That we have.
• 26:48
Speaker 4: We're Lately Field, which is our big field here in
• 26:50
Speaker 4: West Virginia. I get over the first hurdle, I'm good.
• 26:54
Speaker 4: I get over the second hurdle, I'm good. I'm thinking,
• 26:57
Speaker 4: oh man, I'm good. Third hurdle, the heel, My heel
• 27:01
Speaker 4: caught the top of the hurdle. I literally went over.
• 27:06
Speaker 4: I took out two hurdles over and I was like never,
• 27:14
Speaker 4: I said, no way I could run it. So my
• 27:17
Speaker 4: hat is off to you, because to me, that is
• 27:21
Speaker 4: the most That skill set in hurdles has to be
• 27:26
Speaker 4: the greatest skill set. And how old are you? I
• 27:35
Speaker 4: couldn't do it at eighteen and you're doing it at
• 27:39
Speaker 4: the highest level at eleven. My hat is off to
• 27:43
Speaker 4: you because I just can't imagine how much time you
• 27:46
Speaker 4: have to put in. What help me with this? What
• 27:50
Speaker 4: is your what is a typical workout day for you?
• 27:54
Speaker 4: Let's say for the hurdles specifically, what would you do?
• 27:58
Speaker 4: What would be your normal day?
• 28:01
Speaker 10: So for the hurdles, my normal day would be I
• 28:05
Speaker 10: do some stretches, do some quick sprints, then I'll start
• 28:11
Speaker 10: doing like some hurdle howts. Then I'll start doing full
• 28:15
Speaker 10: approach to the hurdles.
• 28:16
Speaker 4: See, I must see. My problem was I didn't do
• 28:19
Speaker 4: none of the none of that on the Fronday. I
• 28:21
Speaker 4: didn't know the war, So that's why.
• 28:25
Speaker 5: I just didn't do it like you are.
• 28:27
  Speaker 4: Girl.
• 28:29
Speaker 5: Hey, Ashon, this is Lisa Odie. How are you this evening?
• 28:34
  Speaker 9: I'm good, good, It's.
• 28:36
Speaker 5: Good to have you on the show.
• 28:37
Speaker 6: I'm so impressed with all your accomplishments. Hey, I just
• 28:40
Speaker 6: have a quick question, and if you don't have an answer,
• 28:43
  Speaker 6: it's okay.
• 28:44
Speaker 5: But I hope you do. Who is your biggest inspiration
• 28:47
Speaker 5: in track and field?
• 28:48
Speaker 3: Do you have one?
• 28:50
  Speaker 10: Yeah?
• 28:50
Speaker 9: Too, my biggest inspira.
• 28:52
Speaker 10: My biggest inspiration is my mom because because I always
• 28:58
Speaker 10: try to be better than her.
• 29:00
  Speaker 3: Just a reference.
• 29:01
Speaker 4: Her mother was a volleyball and track athlete at West
• 29:04
Speaker 4: Virginia State during our time there. So uh Mi, Shelle Newton.
• 29:08
Speaker 4: She was an All Conference of volleyball and track athlete.
• 29:11
Speaker 4: So yeah, so you got some big shoes to feel.
• 29:13
Speaker 5: Yeah, that's awesome. That's awesome answer.
• 29:17
  Speaker 3: Yeah.
• 29:17
Speaker 4: So again, so, so what are your ultimate goals with
• 29:21
Speaker 4: you know, track and kind of where do you see
• 29:23
Speaker 4: yourself at like maybe in high school?
• 29:27
Speaker 10: In high school, I want to try and make it
• 29:29
Speaker 10: to the Olympics. And I also want to try and
• 29:34
  Speaker 10: jump and jumps.
• 29:37
Speaker 3: Nice, I love it. Yeah. Is your is your mom?
• 29:42
Speaker 3: Is she can? You can your mom?
• 29:43
  Speaker 1: Hear us?
• 29:45
  Speaker 3: Yes?
• 29:46
  Speaker 4: Yes?
• 29:46
Speaker 3: Hello, How are you to tell me a little bit? Good? Good,
• 29:51
Speaker 3: tell me a little bit about what you're seeing in
• 29:55
  Speaker 3: your daughter?
• 29:55
Speaker 1: Like what is it?
• 29:56
Speaker 4: Because because to me, just for just us listening to
• 30:00
Speaker 4: her clearly like she's well advanced. To me, the mental
• 30:05
Speaker 4: side of her is just amazing. Yeah, you know, so
• 30:10
Speaker 4: tell us a little bit about like what this is
• 30:13
Speaker 4: to you? Like when you when you listen to her,
• 30:15
Speaker 4: you look at her and you see what she's doing,
• 30:17
Speaker 4: like like what are you like?
• 30:19
  Speaker 3: You're in awe?
• 30:19
  Speaker 4: What?
• 30:19
  Speaker 8: What? What?
• 30:20
Speaker 3: Tell us a little bit about that?
• 30:22
Speaker 9: Really, I I really am in awe. I look at
• 30:26
Speaker 9: her and I just remember myself at her age, and
• 30:29
Speaker 9: I'm like, oh no, it's not even comparison, it's not
• 30:31
Speaker 9: all at all. And and like she said, it was
• 30:35
Speaker 9: surprising that she said that I was her favorite track,
• 30:38
Speaker 9: because I know she really looks at a lot of
• 30:40
Speaker 9: other ones, and you know that was that's that's saying something.
• 30:43
Speaker 9: And I guess I'm doing something right. But in terms
• 30:46
Speaker 9: of just mentally preparing her, you know, I just just
• 30:49
Speaker 9: tell her like, hey, if you want to do this,
• 30:51
Speaker 9: you can. If you don't, you don't have to because again,
• 30:54
Speaker 9: at the end of the day, you're still just eleven
• 30:55
  Speaker 9: years old.
• 30:56
  Speaker 3: And uh.
• 30:57
Speaker 9: And I want to make sure she her goals if
• 31:00
Speaker 9: she wants to make it to the Olympics. I believe
• 31:03
Speaker 9: that she can. In terms of athleticism, she has it all.
• 31:09
Speaker 9: She not only that, she's a very good student too,
• 31:12
Speaker 9: She makes all as she's just a really good person. Yeah,
• 31:18
Speaker 9: she she really is, you know. And just to speak
• 31:20
Speaker 9: a little bit to you know, her jumping in what
• 31:23
Speaker 9: she is doing in her capabilities. Now, just to give
• 31:26
Speaker 9: you a perspective, her best jump is a seventeen to six. Now,
• 31:32
Speaker 9: seventeen feet jump now.
• 31:37
Speaker 5: That can you please?
• 31:39
Speaker 3: Can you please say that again?
• 31:42
  Speaker 5: Oh my goodness?
• 31:43
  Speaker 3: Are you.
• 31:46
  Speaker 6: In my dude?
• 31:46
Speaker 9: It's just still indoor season. Well, we just finished indoor season.
• 31:50
Speaker 9: She still has the whole outdoor season to kind of
• 31:54
Speaker 9: really really do her best and her goal is to
• 31:57
Speaker 9: try to get eighteen before the end of wow outdoor season.
• 32:01
Speaker 3: So what what was the win? What was the winning
• 32:04
Speaker 3: jump at the national the AU national championships.
• 32:08
Speaker 9: So her jump was yeah, she was still she had
• 32:11
Speaker 9: to win and jump. She was a foot and a
• 32:14
Speaker 9: half behind the board for whatever reason, we couldn't get
• 32:16
Speaker 9: our footing down, but she still out jumped everybody at
• 32:20
Speaker 9: least by two or three feet. Wow, she jumped to
• 32:27
  Speaker 9: fifteen eleven.
• 32:28
Speaker 3: Oh nice, Wow, you know that's not that's not eleven
• 32:33
Speaker 3: year old jump. Yeah, I guess, I guess. So, So
• 32:41
  Speaker 3: what's what's next?
• 32:42
Speaker 4: As far as you mentioned, so we had the indoor
• 32:45
Speaker 4: AU season, that's national championship.
• 32:47
Speaker 3: We did that. What's next after that?
• 32:50
Speaker 9: So we're going into the outdoor season and we're going
• 32:53
Speaker 9: to be participating in the USA Track and Field Division
• 32:58
Speaker 9: as well as the A Division. So we'll be petering
• 33:02
Speaker 9: back and forth through both of those divisions all the
• 33:06
Speaker 9: way up to their national meet and that's usually in August,
• 33:11
  Speaker 9: end of July.
• 33:12
Speaker 3: Awesome, one more time, so let's thot to ask.
• 33:20
  Speaker 10: Hi.
• 33:20
Speaker 4: All right, so we're going to close out, and again
• 33:23
Speaker 4: we congratulate you on everything you're doing and we just
• 33:25
Speaker 4: hope that you keep on doing and keep on having
• 33:28
Speaker 4: having fun and having a love for what you're doing.
• 33:30
Speaker 4: So do you want to get any closing message? Where
• 33:33
Speaker 4: can people find where can they learn more about Ashland?
• 33:38
Speaker 10: They can check out my Instagram page that's ran by
• 33:41
Speaker 10: my mom. All right, Sunshine seven.
• 33:45
Speaker 3: Say that one more time.
• 33:48
Speaker 10: It's all right sign Sunshine seven.
• 33:50
Speaker 3: All right, thank you as we appreciate you, Thank thank you,
• 33:54
Speaker 3: and good time much thank you. Now that Yeah, that
• 34:09
Speaker 3: little girl right there would be my hero.
• 34:13
Speaker 4: You know what I'm saying, Like even just hearing her,
• 34:16
Speaker 4: just hearing her talk, and and Mom's sitting right there
• 34:21
Speaker 4: and she's talking as if like she's grown up. You
• 34:25
  Speaker 4: know what I'm saying, Like, she's I I would love
• 34:30
Speaker 4: and I'm gonna put this on you. We need to
• 34:31
Speaker 4: get some kind of video of her. I'm sure mom
• 34:34
Speaker 4: has recorded her running or something. We need we need
• 34:39
Speaker 4: to we need to get that and if anything, just
• 34:41
Speaker 4: put it on. Let's put it on. Let's talk so
• 34:43
Speaker 4: other people can see it.
• 34:45
Speaker 5: That would be great.
• 34:45
  Speaker 3: Yeah, because I think I think that's I.
• 34:47
  Speaker 4: Think she's a special, special athlete as a whole, she's
• 34:52
Speaker 4: so so so Now we did that, We got to
• 34:54
Speaker 4: get into the meet and gravy.
• 34:56
Speaker 3: Now get to what we came for. Oh for coach,
• 35:03
  Speaker 3: I'm thinking.
• 35:05
Speaker 5: I think it's daddy ball, all right, so.
• 35:10
Speaker 3: Let me, let me, let me I'm opening it up,
• 35:14
  Speaker 3: all right.
• 35:14
Speaker 4: So the term daddy ball has been something that's been
• 35:21
Speaker 4: around for a while, and it and it's my definition.
• 35:25
Speaker 3: Of it is when when dad basically.
• 35:31
Speaker 4: Tries to control everything about his son his daughter to
• 35:35
Speaker 4: make them be part, not really part, but be the starter,
• 35:40
Speaker 4: be the best player, all of that kind of thing.
• 35:43
  Speaker 3: That's actually a great definition.
• 35:44
Speaker 6: Yes, that's you know, but there is a there is
• 35:46
Speaker 6: an official definition. Okay, it's amazing what Google can do, right, GTS.
• 35:54
Speaker 6: It's like, so I typed in daddy ball, and so
• 35:57
Speaker 6: this is what I got. I got basically two separate definitions,
• 36:01
Speaker 6: and I'm going to read it word for word for
• 36:02
Speaker 6: you guys, and then you guys can tell me because
• 36:04
Speaker 6: I have kind of I have an inclination of where
• 36:09
Speaker 6: if we're going the route I think we are with Lebron,
• 36:11
Speaker 6: which one really kind of is Lebron's category, so to speak.
• 36:16
Speaker 6: So the first one is a term used to describe
• 36:19
Speaker 6: when a parent coaches their child's sports team and favors
• 36:22
Speaker 6: their child over other players.
• 36:24
Speaker 5: That's one o. The second part is parent, a parent
• 36:27
Speaker 5: creates a team around their child, even if their child
• 36:32
  Speaker 5: isn't a strong player.
• 36:34
Speaker 3: Wow, I've seen yeah, show.
• 36:38
Speaker 5: Right there to me, don't you.
• 36:40
Speaker 3: There's some travel balls.
• 36:45
Speaker 4: So let's just break it down because when we see
• 36:47
Speaker 4: daddy ball, and when we say daddy ball, we're going
• 36:50
Speaker 4: to keep it at the highest level.
• 36:51
  Speaker 3: Right.
• 36:52
Speaker 4: So we've seen the Primes, we've seen the LeVar balls,
• 36:56
Speaker 4: we've seen the Richard Williams, and now you've got to
• 36:59
Speaker 4: sit you in which Lebron and his son Bronnie, and
• 37:03
Speaker 4: I think to the other ones that I previously mentioned
• 37:06
Speaker 4: it's probably not so much of an argument as to
• 37:09
Speaker 4: their merit to where they deserve to be. I think
• 37:13
Speaker 4: that argument can be had with Bronni and Lebron's son,
• 37:17
Speaker 4: and there was a recent event with him and Stephen A.
• 37:19
  Speaker 3: Smith. Stephen A.
• 37:20
Speaker 4: Smith again, to my knowledge and to the talking points
• 37:24
Speaker 4: that I've heard from Steven A. Smith regarding lebron Son,
• 37:28
Speaker 4: it was always in reference to say, hey, he's okay,
• 37:31
  Speaker 4: he's a G League player, and Lebron did him a
• 37:34
Speaker 4: disservice by putting this much on him. That's the talking
• 37:36
  Speaker 4: points that I've heard from Steven A. And I don't
• 37:38
Speaker 4: agree with Stephen A A all the time, and I
• 37:41
Speaker 4: just think it was in poor taste, It was immature,
• 37:47
Speaker 4: and it was just almost a sucker move for Lebron
• 37:51
Speaker 4: to get up into Stephen A. Smith face in that manner,
• 37:56
Speaker 4: in that respect, in that setting, Yeah you want to.
• 38:02
Speaker 6: Go, I can, I can, so I totally agree with
• 38:05
Speaker 6: what you're Saint Hollis. I think that was a total
• 38:08
Speaker 6: ambush and it was fourth side of a game. I mean,
• 38:11
Speaker 6: that whole situation. If Lebron had an issue with what
• 38:14
Speaker 6: Stephen has been saying about Brony throughout the season on
• 38:17
Speaker 6: different you know, first takes or whatever.
• 38:19
Speaker 5: Outside of first take, there were other ways to approach it.
• 38:22
Speaker 6: He could have picked up the phone, he could have
• 38:24
Speaker 6: called I think in one of the clips that I
• 38:27
Speaker 6: saw Stephen A. Smith addressing all of this, he even said, Hey,
• 38:30
Speaker 6: I would have flown out there and met with him
• 38:31
Speaker 6: when I one, you know, he said, if it was
• 38:34
Speaker 6: this much of an issue with him, he said, you know,
• 38:36
Speaker 6: our relationships and I'm paraphrasing of course that they do
• 38:40
Speaker 6: have an abrasive relationship anyway over the years. But then
• 38:43
Speaker 6: I guess when this situation happened, it just kind of
• 38:47
Speaker 6: pushed Lebron over the edge. But still the way he
• 38:50
Speaker 6: handled it is the problem I have with the whole situation.
• 38:53
Speaker 4: I would have made Lebron slap the fire out of
• 38:55
Speaker 4: me and suit it for And okay, so even even
• 39:02
Speaker 4: even to your point, hollis what I'm I'm looking at
• 39:06
Speaker 4: this as as as being Lebron right, and you you're
• 39:11
Speaker 4: talking about my son.
• 39:12
Speaker 3: I one get that you I can't let you talk
• 39:17
Speaker 3: about my son, but.
• 39:21
Speaker 4: The situation, what the situation becomes is your son is
• 39:25
Speaker 4: an NBA player and a grown man.
• 39:28
Speaker 3: And a grown man, right, I my job.
• 39:33
Speaker 4: You know, Lebron will talking about you know, or people
• 39:35
Speaker 4: talking about Lebron's contract Stephen A. Is he his contractor
• 39:41
Speaker 4: he is right there? Yes, he just got one. So
• 39:44
Speaker 4: as good as Lebron is in playing, he's as good
• 39:48
  Speaker 4: as a commentator.
• 39:50
Speaker 3: As you can get. Like him or not. I didn't
• 39:53
Speaker 3: think about that, but that's like him or not as
• 39:55
  Speaker 3: a fair point.
• 39:56
Speaker 4: So now when you walk up on him, it's no
• 40:00
Speaker 4: different than somebody walking up to Lebron.
• 40:03
Speaker 3: We even, we're easy. That's a fair point where you
• 40:08
Speaker 3: finally got some good points. That is a good point.
• 40:12
  Speaker 3: We are even.
• 40:13
Speaker 4: You don't have nothing on me point now because we
• 40:18
Speaker 4: are equal. Okay, we're with you. So so now I
• 40:21
Speaker 4: don't know how big you are because at the end
• 40:24
Speaker 4: of the day, slap me and now let me tell me,
• 40:27
Speaker 4: tell me where your career going. So so there could
• 40:32
Speaker 4: not be any hands on and I jump in and
• 40:35
Speaker 4: I think this little injury let Lebron got, I think
• 40:38
  Speaker 4: that's a suspension.
• 40:41
Speaker 3: Do you think that it could be? Could it could be?
• 40:44
Speaker 4: I think they don't want to say that, but I
• 40:47
Speaker 4: think that's what this is. My pain, that's just conjecture,
• 40:50
Speaker 4: that's just opinion. Okay, and and and it's valid.
• 40:55
Speaker 3: I think again, stepping in for your son is fine.
• 41:01
Speaker 4: The moment that your son becomes an NBA player, as
• 41:04
Speaker 4: you call him, he's susceptible to any criticism from.
• 41:10
  Speaker 3: Any media outlet.
• 41:12
Speaker 4: That and you don't have a and you don't have
• 41:14
Speaker 4: a right to come back on you don't have that right.
• 41:19
Speaker 4: But but to your point, is it okay for him
• 41:23
Speaker 4: to step in? Not any accord at this point, because
• 41:26
Speaker 4: I mean, even if they're talking about his personality or
• 41:29
Speaker 4: what are taking personal shots, is it okay your son
• 41:33
Speaker 4: is a professional athlete, he's on the same stage as you.
• 41:36
Speaker 3: Is it okay at this point to step in with anything?
• 41:38
Speaker 3: Or do you just let him go?
• 41:39
Speaker 5: No, I think you. I think you should let him go.
• 41:42
Speaker 3: To let him go.
• 41:43
Speaker 6: But let's let's look at this from another angle. Let's
• 41:46
Speaker 6: think about the way Browny was brought into the NBA.
• 41:48
Speaker 6: We all know he got the opportunity because of his dad,
• 41:51
Speaker 6: for we all know that dad at the highest level. Yes,
• 41:55
Speaker 6: the whole conversation we're having daddy ball. But don't you
• 41:58
Speaker 6: feel like no matter what Bronny does, people are hyper
• 42:02
Speaker 6: critical of him. No matter what he does, he has
• 42:05
Speaker 6: held to a higher standard because of the way he
• 42:07
Speaker 6: got his opportunity compared to other players.
• 42:10
Speaker 5: I'm not saying that that's right or wrong. I'm saying
• 42:13
Speaker 5: that's simply what happens with him.
• 42:14
Speaker 4: So are you saying like that may like make Lebron
• 42:17
Speaker 4: a little bit more sensitive to the situation.
• 42:19
Speaker 6: I think so. And also it's just he's an easier
• 42:21
Speaker 6: target because his dad is Lebron.
• 42:23
  Speaker 5: Like Stephen A.
• 42:24
Speaker 6: Smith would not spend as much time on the subject
• 42:27
Speaker 6: of Bronni if his dad wasn't Lebron, if he was
• 42:29
Speaker 6: just a run of the mill player, that.
• 42:33
  Speaker 3: I would disagree. I disagree.
• 42:35
Speaker 4: I think anybody who brings their player, their son into
• 42:40
Speaker 4: play and does the exact same thing that Lebron done
• 42:45
Speaker 4: because we ain't draft I'm not drafting.
• 42:47
Speaker 5: They don't get the notoriety and the media.
• 42:50
Speaker 4: Ron to your point, I don't think we've ever seen
• 42:53
Speaker 4: a situation in which basically Lebron strong armed the Lakers
• 42:56
Speaker 4: and said, if you ain't getting him, you're not having me.
• 42:59
Speaker 4: I don't think we've seen a bunch of the NBA, NBA, NBA,
• 43:03
Speaker 4: particularly the NBA will stay there is filled with nepotism,
• 43:06
Speaker 4: at this point, there's a lot of second and third
• 43:08
  Speaker 4: generation players, but I don't think we've ever seen a
• 43:10
Speaker 4: situation like that exactly. And he should have never got
• 43:14
Speaker 4: ever got off the bench. He should have never been in.
• 43:16
Speaker 4: He should have never been in. Again, he should have
• 43:18
  Speaker 4: never been.
• 43:19
Speaker 3: In the game. And then the fact that you know,
• 43:21
Speaker 3: like he ain't on the team. Now, then how was
• 43:24
  Speaker 3: he in uniform?
• 43:25
Speaker 4: How was he part of your dressing team that's gonna
• 43:29
Speaker 4: come out on the out on the court and play.
• 43:31
  Speaker 3: He Lebron.
• 43:35
Speaker 4: Took daddy ball to the to the epitome of demanding this.
• 43:40
Speaker 4: So if you can demand this, then you got to
• 43:43
Speaker 4: be prepared to take any criticism.
• 43:46
Speaker 3: Because you because you're wrong. Your son couldn't play.
• 43:49
  Speaker 4: I can't disagree with that your son couldn't I don't
• 43:52
Speaker 4: even have a rebut to that, no, Now, all.
• 43:58
Speaker 3: That you named all right, players played hardware, They stepped
• 44:03
  Speaker 3: up and played.
• 44:04
  Speaker 4: Yeah.
• 44:05
Speaker 3: Lebron's son did not cannot step up and play. Yeah.
• 44:10
Speaker 3: And so ain't know you you mad at the commentator
• 44:12
Speaker 3: who are saying he can't play?
• 44:15
Speaker 4: Okay, but let me ask you another situation then, and
• 44:18
Speaker 4: again this ain't daddy ball per se. But like the
• 44:20
Speaker 4: Greek fig Giannis of Milwaukee. Basically he brought his brothers in,
• 44:24
Speaker 4: So would that be similar or is that a different situation.
• 44:28
Speaker 4: But the question, my question is because it's it's really
• 44:32
Speaker 4: only daddy ball, brother ball, mom and ball. It's only
• 44:35
Speaker 4: that if. To me, it only gets that way if
• 44:39
Speaker 4: the players can't play. Okay, you know, if the players
• 44:43
Speaker 4: can play, If they can you know, if they show
• 44:45
Speaker 4: up then and then that's okay.
• 44:48
Speaker 6: Even if the only reason they got the opportunity to
• 44:50
Speaker 6: try out for the team was because it was daddy
• 44:53
Speaker 6: or mommy or brother or whatever you're saying, it doesn't matter.
• 44:57
Speaker 6: I'm gonna say there's undiscovered players out there that are
• 44:59
Speaker 6: talented that will never get the opportunity to go play
• 45:01
Speaker 6: at the NBA because they.
• 45:02
Speaker 4: Don't absolutely But again, to those examples, you had to
• 45:07
Speaker 4: actually physically, mentally, emotionally make the team. So I guess,
• 45:11
Speaker 4: I guess what you're saying is that regardless of how
• 45:14
Speaker 4: you got the opportunity, if you're right and you can play,
• 45:18
Speaker 4: and you can, it is could. But at the point
• 45:21
Speaker 4: that the point we're talking about, we're not sure he
• 45:24
Speaker 4: can do that. If if if if I'm if I'm prime.
• 45:30
  Speaker 3: And my son.
• 45:31
Speaker 4: I ain't gonna go to pro. I'm gonna just go
• 45:33
Speaker 4: talk college. I'm gonna put my son in this position.
• 45:36
Speaker 4: I'm gonna put his buddy at this position because I
• 45:39
Speaker 4: know them, and I know what they can do.
• 45:41
Speaker 3: Now we saw what they can do. They can play.
• 45:43
Speaker 3: And while that you can make the case that's the
• 45:46
Speaker 3: epitome of a daddy ball. But they can play. Okay.
• 45:49
Speaker 3: See so I see.
• 45:50
Speaker 4: I like that definition because I think you you've sort
• 45:53
Speaker 4: of expanded it. So because to your point least, looking
• 45:57
Speaker 4: at the second part of the definition, if I'm building
• 45:59
Speaker 4: a team around my son and my son or daughter
• 46:04
Speaker 4: they can actually play and do the job, then that's
• 46:06
Speaker 4: a difference in the race. If I'm bringing somebody in
• 46:09
Speaker 4: who just doesn't have the talent to do it. And
• 46:11
Speaker 4: and you know, and basketball basketball, and I've seen this,
• 46:15
Speaker 4: you know in you sports. Dad brings son, Son's a starter,
• 46:20
Speaker 4: no issue, son can play, no issue, son shoots the
• 46:24
Speaker 4: ball most of the time. It's an issue. Okay, you
• 46:29
Speaker 4: know what I'm saying, Because at some point Dad's got
• 46:31
Speaker 4: to say, hey, stop shooting past. You gotta pass it.
• 46:34
Speaker 4: You know, you gotta be you gotta be a team.
• 46:36
Speaker 4: It's got to be a team daddy balls. Okay, if
• 46:39
Speaker 4: it's if it's managed, if you can manage it, and
• 46:42
Speaker 4: which I think is really difficult, if you can manage
• 46:45
Speaker 4: it to the point your son is just a player.
• 46:48
Speaker 4: If my dad was a coach, Brown probably ain't playing.
• 46:51
  Speaker 4: I ain't he ain't he ain't he Probably I make
• 47:00
Speaker 4: mistake Dad pulling me, and he probably pulling me for
• 47:03
Speaker 4: the game. You should have known better than that. So okay,
• 47:07
Speaker 4: so let me ask you this, leak. I think what
• 47:09
Speaker 4: coach is saying, the issue ain't necessarily daddy ball. The
• 47:14
Speaker 4: issue is saying pitting somebody who's not qualified or prepared
• 47:17
  Speaker 4: in the position.
• 47:18
Speaker 3: Would you agree with that?
• 47:20
Speaker 6: What's your thoughts on I mean, I think that that
• 47:22
Speaker 6: is a good valid way to redefine it, because you know,
• 47:27
Speaker 6: we always just think about, you know, daddy ball being
• 47:29
Speaker 6: for those that aren't as capable as the other you know, teammates,
• 47:35
Speaker 6: And now we're looking at it as Yes, as long
• 47:38
Speaker 6: as daddy is first of all, he's regulated, and how
• 47:42
Speaker 6: he lets his son participate in the sport, he doesn't
• 47:45
Speaker 6: overemphasize his his son over the other players. That's part
• 47:49
Speaker 6: of it, right, And then the other part is they
• 47:51
Speaker 6: legitimately can play whatever sport it is, right, They are
• 47:55
Speaker 6: legitimately qualified, right, Okay, I mean.
• 47:58
Speaker 4: And I really can't be mad at that because I
• 48:00
Speaker 4: didn't necessarily think about it like that. I think there
• 48:03
Speaker 4: to your point, Lisa, there is a balance there because
• 48:05
Speaker 4: even if he can or he or she, if they
• 48:08
Speaker 4: can play, then there has to be an emphasis on
• 48:11
Speaker 4: particularly talking about like little league, youth sportsbody else involved. Right.
• 48:15
Speaker 4: But I just think, and again I'm looking at it
• 48:18
Speaker 4: from maybe a different perspective. I just never thought we
• 48:21
Speaker 4: would see like Daddy ball this much in our face
• 48:25
Speaker 4: at the highest level of sports. I never thought I
• 48:28
Speaker 4: would see an NBA player like this, or even a
• 48:31
Speaker 4: prime to a degree how not necessarily his kids can play,
• 48:34
Speaker 4: for sure, but just the marketing that he builts around them,
• 48:38
Speaker 4: you know what I mean. I think we've seen this,
• 48:40
Speaker 4: like even like a King Griffith, he played with his dad,
• 48:42
Speaker 4: but I don't think it was a relationship where Dad
• 48:44
Speaker 4: putting me on King is great. He's better than this, right, right,
• 48:47
Speaker 4: So I just I never thought we would see it
• 48:50
Speaker 4: at the highest level to this degree, and.
• 48:53
Speaker 6: It's seeming a bad taste in some of the NBA fans.
• 48:56
Speaker 6: I think it's leaving a bad taste with.
• 48:58
Speaker 4: The well and again to me, Lebron oft to go situation. Yeah,
• 49:03
Speaker 4: you said, that's exactly where I was gady to go.
• 49:07
Speaker 4: What that did for him is it knocks his legacy
• 49:12
Speaker 4: that conversation. Yeah, because I think to degree you getting
• 49:16
Speaker 4: your son there, that's one thing.
• 49:17
Speaker 3: But Michael Jordan would never care for something good or not.
• 49:23
Speaker 4: He would never because what Mike to me, what Mike's
• 49:28
Speaker 4: gonna say about his son If his son can't make it.
• 49:31
Speaker 3: Right, I can't put my name on you, exactly. I
• 49:35
Speaker 3: can't put my name on you. Shame on Lebron for
• 49:38
Speaker 3: putting his name on his son.
• 49:40
  Speaker 4: I ain't gonna say that. I ain't gonna I ain't
• 49:42
Speaker 4: gonna say because here's here's here's the thing, here's the problem.
• 49:46
  Speaker 3: That's take the s O E. N off of it.
• 49:51
Speaker 3: You put your name on it.
• 49:52
Speaker 4: A potential NBA player and he failed. Did you not
• 49:59
Speaker 4: know he was gonna fail? Maybe you didn't, may she
• 50:02
Speaker 4: because at the end of the day, he is an
• 50:05
  Speaker 4: NBA player, He's a He's a player that Lebron stood
• 50:09
Speaker 4: up for to hopefully be able to get him in
• 50:11
  Speaker 4: the NBA. He ain't his son, he's a he's a
• 50:14
Speaker 4: potential NBA player. He got drafted because Lebron said draft okay.
• 50:19
Speaker 3: And I'm with you.
• 50:20
  Speaker 4: I'm I'm leaning towards your way, but I guess I'm
• 50:24
Speaker 4: looking at it just slightly different because my situation, my
• 50:27
Speaker 4: my problem is is just that even the whole situation
• 50:30
Speaker 4: with the son, the Banana bu boys, everything else, it
• 50:32
Speaker 4: just don't foster environment of competitiveness.
• 50:36
Speaker 3: This ain't to your point. This ain't like saying, all right, son,
• 50:40
Speaker 3: I'm gonna give you this G league G league rip, then.
• 50:43
Speaker 4: You got you got it from here five. That's a
• 50:45
Speaker 4: difference because now you got that's total. Yes, you gotta
• 50:47
Speaker 4: go take the bust with the team. You gotta go
• 50:49
Speaker 4: take the little terrible charter for that's what the team.
• 50:52
Speaker 4: You gotta go be a dog about it now, so
• 50:54
Speaker 4: you gotta make your own way. I'm gonna give you
• 50:56
Speaker 4: the boost up, but I'm not gonna carry you on
• 50:58
  Speaker 4: my back.
• 50:59
Speaker 3: So I think it just for the bigger piece.
• 51:01
Speaker 4: I mean, we've talked about All Star Games, we talked
• 51:03
Speaker 4: about the style of play, and to me, the Lebron
• 51:07
Speaker 4: era is just not one of just furious, dogged, just
• 51:11
Speaker 4: competitiveness where we see guys just bite each other's head
• 51:14
Speaker 4: off for the top spot. It's just like everybody homeboys
• 51:17
Speaker 4: and everybody just nice and it's all friendly. It's just
• 51:21
Speaker 4: it sucks to work there.
• 51:22
Speaker 5: There's no sparks, no spirit.
• 51:25
Speaker 4: Yeah, and the biggest spark is you getting in an
• 51:27
Speaker 4: announcer's face that you a foot taller in and can pummel.
• 51:30
Speaker 3: I saw Lisa. I saw earlier.
• 51:32
Speaker 4: Today they were showing some clips of Lebron flopping oh man, okay,
• 51:41
Speaker 4: and like and it's no contact, Like there's literally he's
• 51:44
Speaker 4: falling and there's no contact.
• 51:46
Speaker 5: And he's getting minutes of your life you'll never get back, right.
• 51:51
Speaker 3: See when you okay, So I see you do that
• 51:54
Speaker 3: on top of seeing you try to do this. But
• 51:59
  Speaker 3: I can't make you. I you know, I can't put
• 52:02
Speaker 3: you in the goat conversation. I just can't.
• 52:05
Speaker 4: You lost it because the goat has to be not
• 52:08
Speaker 4: just I've never seen anybody. I've seen a When you
• 52:12
Speaker 4: see great players who mess up, do something wrong, get
• 52:16
Speaker 4: kicked out of the league, we say, oh, you know what,
• 52:18
Speaker 4: he could have been one of the best players ever.
• 52:21
Speaker 3: Yeah, when you mess up.
• 52:24
  Speaker 2: You.
• 52:25
Speaker 4: You you don't get to get in the conversation of
• 52:28
Speaker 4: being the best you could have been. I ain't gona
• 52:30
Speaker 4: kick him out the time. I'm not kicking him out.
• 52:32
Speaker 4: I thinking him out.
• 52:33
  Speaker 3: He ain't the goat. He's a goat, but he ain't
• 52:36
  Speaker 3: the go.
• 52:36
Speaker 4: He's a great He's one of the best players ever
• 52:40
Speaker 4: to play in the NBA.
• 52:41
Speaker 3: On and off the court.
• 52:42
Speaker 4: I would say on Jefnedy, he's playing longevity. All that
• 52:48
Speaker 4: family man, all that my trouble. I appreciate that. I
• 52:50
Speaker 4: appreciate the flat family man. But you let your family,
• 52:54
Speaker 4: You let your Yeah, you let your family might need you.
• 52:59
Speaker 4: You you what you did with your family is you
• 53:07
Speaker 4: tried to make you tried to bulldog him into being an.
• 53:11
Speaker 3: Nb NBA player like you. He ain't like you. He
• 53:17
Speaker 3: ain't like you, because if he was like you, you
• 53:20
Speaker 3: don't even have to bother. I know the second son
• 53:23
Speaker 3: is like him. The second one is like that. Okay,
• 53:25
Speaker 3: this one is not because because because yeah.
• 53:28
Speaker 4: The second Bryce I think is his name and the
• 53:30
Speaker 4: thing that and the thing that I think that Lebron
• 53:32
Speaker 4: should have looked at is okay he when you came through,
• 53:37
Speaker 4: you came through straight through like every everybody was looking
• 53:40
  Speaker 4: at you.
• 53:41
Speaker 3: Everybody wanted you, everybody. He had the most pressure of
• 53:43
Speaker 3: any history. Okay he did.
• 53:46
Speaker 4: Now, when you look at your when you look at
• 53:49
Speaker 4: your son, do you see that, do you see that
• 53:54
Speaker 4: storm of people like, oh, we gotta get Bronnie, we
• 53:58
Speaker 4: gotta get her. If you do, and it's a whole
• 54:02
  Speaker 4: it's a lot to that.
• 54:03
  Speaker 9: Yeah.
• 54:03
Speaker 4: Yeah. And if you don't do it, like if you
• 54:06
Speaker 4: don't see it bright, you gotta let him. You gotta
• 54:09
Speaker 4: let him sit on the side, but get him a
• 54:10
Speaker 4: good seat, get him a good seat.
• 54:16
  Speaker 3: Yeah.
• 54:16
Speaker 5: I think we pressed up here on.
• 54:20
Speaker 3: I just got I just felt like it was a
• 54:23
Speaker 3: bad situation. I just thought it was a bad situation
• 54:26
Speaker 3: that just was not conducive of goat behavior. Like I said,
• 54:30
  Speaker 3: you just don't.
• 54:31
Speaker 4: Again, we're talking about him in the context of being
• 54:34
  Speaker 4: a professional athlete. I don't think I've ever heard anybody
• 54:38
Speaker 4: say anything personal about that young man.
• 54:40
Speaker 3: It ain't nothing nothing. Person is just professional athlete. That's
• 54:45
Speaker 3: just Lebron. It's just Lebron's this ship.
• 54:46
Speaker 5: Yeah, and we have to throw some kudos out to
• 54:48
Speaker 5: Stephen A. Smith. I thought he handled this pretty well.
• 54:51
Speaker 6: I mean, I've seen some AI stuff out there that
• 54:53
Speaker 6: was totally fake that, you know, gave another perspective that
• 54:56
Speaker 6: overall the interviews, he's been very you know, down to
• 54:59
Speaker 6: earth about the explanations of how it happened and why
• 55:02
Speaker 6: it happened, and he's he's been gracious.
• 55:04
Speaker 4: I told you he just that day he signed one
• 55:06
Speaker 4: hundred million dollar deal with esp I wouldn't.
• 55:09
Speaker 3: Got me another honeymoon.
• 55:11
Speaker 4: He tapped me right in my mouth, and I would
• 55:16
Speaker 4: have been hey, I would have been on TV with A.
• 55:21
Speaker 3: Or Oprah in the community.
• 55:27
Speaker 4: Well, ladies and gentlemen, Woll collected, I'm collecting all his money.
