- 0:00Speaker 1: How are you I'll out of invester.
- 0:05Speaker 2: What do you guys suspect or what do you guys know.
- 0:09Speaker 3: About what happens?
- 0:11Speaker 4: Police are speaking with thirteen year old Hunter and his
- 0:15twin brother Levi, and while they appear clueless, now one
- 0:19of them has just committed a gruesome murder.
- 0:23Speaker 5: We need to talk to essentially each of you, and
- 0:26we're wondering if we can go out to the police deparmat.
- 0:29Speaker 6: I don't know what's going on here you are.
- 0:32Speaker 4: As the week's long investigation continues, detectives discover that these
- 0:37are no ordinary boys. One of them has spent years
- 0:41obsessively researching serial killers like Ted Bundy. Now he believes
- 0:46he's executed the perfect murder and can out smart police,
- 0:50but a series of childish mistakes would cause his violent
- 0:54fantasies to slowly come to light, leaving his family and
- 0:58the entire town in utter shock. As the monster they
- 1:01feared turns out to be a thirteen year old boy
- 1:05finefl and he needs to die.
- 1:09Speaker 7: There's be someone who blooded over what happens.
- 1:12Speaker 8: Now, it's only there's two types of people in this world.
- 1:17You've got monsters, You've got people who make mistakes.
- 1:20Speaker 9: A murder than it would be.
- 1:22Speaker 3: A monster right.
- 1:29Speaker 4: It's two am in the small village of Fairfax, Ohio,
- 1:34and tonight a thirteen year old boy decides this is
- 1:37the night he becomes a serial killer. For years, he's
- 1:41been obsessed with true crime content, and with his family
- 1:45preparing to move away the following week, he's finally ready
- 1:48to put everything he's learned into action. At two thirty am,
- 1:53he slips out of his house and walks less than
- 1:56ten feet to his neighbor's house next door. Once in,
- 2:00the thirteen year old puts on a pair of gloves,
- 2:03something he learned on YouTube that would prevent him from
- 2:06leaving behind his DNA. He moves silently through the house
- 2:10before approaching the bedroom of an elderly woman at two
- 2:13forty He begins strangling her, but despite months of preparation,
- 2:18he quickly realizes this will be far more difficult than
- 2:21he expected, because when the woman wakes up, she fights back,
- 2:25punching and brutally scratching the boy's face. But just minutes later,
- 2:30the woman is dead, killed at the hands of a
- 2:33little boy. At three point fifteen am, he's back in
- 2:36his own bed as if nothing ever happened. It's just
- 2:42past eleven am on a Sunday. Many Fairfax residents are
- 2:46returning home from church when the Fairfax Police receive a
- 2:49nine to one one call unlike anything they've heard in years.
- 2:54Speaker 10: Your emergency, Oh Sory nineteen Tremada.
- 2:58Speaker 11: I think my misterms murdered. I get some blood.
- 3:03Speaker 6: I don't know.
- 3:04Speaker 12: She did not respond when I yelled at her.
- 3:05Speaker 13: All right, sir, I have helped coming out there for her. Okay,
- 3:08you know that you might want a farmer or anything
- 3:10like that.
- 3:11Speaker 12: Absolutely nobody on the line, His sixty one year old
- 3:15Darryl Tenpenny, insisting his sister had been murdered, something almost
- 3:20unheard of in this area.
- 3:22Speaker 4: Moments later, first responders arrive at the house, unaware they're
- 3:26not only walking into a carefully staged crime scene, but
- 3:29that the killer is still nearby, watching police's every move.
- 3:35Speaker 3: Yeah, we'll go and get it out. We'll domicon's confimation
- 3:38stup here. Hey, I don't know if I believe this
- 3:43is the murder.
- 3:44Speaker 14: So camera, it's almost been honestly hitting my wife.
- 3:57Speaker 3: Oh rigor.
- 4:02Speaker 15: Just try to touch at least as you ask him.
- 4:04Speaker 16: Do what you guys gotta do.
- 4:05Speaker 14: Yeah, I'll see you have blood.
- 4:08Speaker 17: Did he did he cover her up?
- 4:10Speaker 18: I don't know.
- 4:11Speaker 19: The cat di pass said that he found.
- 4:13Speaker 16: Her with a pillow over top of her.
- 4:15Speaker 15: I don't know about.
- 4:17Speaker 3: Proxide and cleaning them.
- 4:20Speaker 18: A lot of.
- 4:23Speaker 4: Hokvizmol she drank it.
- 4:27Speaker 20: I don't know.
- 4:28Speaker 3: Let me go. You want you want the monitor?
- 4:30Speaker 4: Oh we have rigor on the bed lies sixty four
- 4:34year old Shila ten Penny, partially clothed and deceased for
- 4:38what appears to have been several hours. As officers continue
- 4:41to inspect the house, they notice nothing appears to be stolen,
- 4:45supporting their working theory that Sheila may have taken her
- 4:48own life. And with that assumption comes the first accidental
- 4:52success for the thirteen year old killer, convincing him he's
- 4:56already outsmarted the police. However, what office her spot next
- 5:01would flip this theory upside down.
- 5:03Speaker 19: It's just a it's a female d away on dremnia,
- 5:07just kind of odd all over her face and some chemical.
- 5:10Speaker 7: Hair, blood and hair underneath your fingers.
- 5:12Speaker 19: Blood spider around that the guy, the founder that the
- 5:15door was open, and he said that he told the
- 5:17flaw that he thinks she was murderer.
- 5:21Speaker 14: So we'll get I don't see blood from her, so
- 5:26that might not be you knows, that's the police workman,
- 5:31I don't mean over set, No, you're good, Hills.
- 5:36Speaker 4: Yeah, Well, the blood and hair beneath Sheila's fingernails certainly
- 5:41raised suspicions. Investigators still refuse to roll out the possibility
- 5:45of this being self inflicted, but before they send Sheila's
- 5:48body for autopsy, there's still something that doesn't sit right
- 5:52with them. They're baffled by how certain the victim's brother, Darryl,
- 5:57seemed that his sister had been assaulted before paramedics had
- 6:00even suggested that possibility, and with that statement alone, he
- 6:04has unknowingly made himself their first suspect. So they decided
- 6:09to ask him a few questions.
- 6:11Speaker 3: Hey know, sir, I mean obviously not great.
- 6:14Speaker 19: I'm also more fair of fact police forrman, when's the
- 6:17last time that you that you know?
- 6:19Speaker 9: Yes?
- 6:20Speaker 17: Do you know what time about?
- 6:22Speaker 16: Or we talked?
- 6:23Speaker 15: Did he talk to hers?
- 6:23Speaker 21: Here?
- 6:24Speaker 11: I see her and actually seven or nine pm it's
- 6:29the last.
- 6:30Speaker 3: Message I got for her.
- 6:31Speaker 19: Is there any was there anything she was she struggling
- 6:34with anything?
- 6:34Speaker 3: I mean mentally physically?
- 6:37Speaker 15: Nothing at all.
- 6:39Speaker 19: Okay, so you made a comment to these guys when
- 6:40they first got here that you thought like she.
- 6:42Speaker 11: First, well, she's laying on the bed with her legs
- 6:46bread and it looked like there was blood, and her
- 6:49head was had stuff on top of her like someone
- 6:51tried to smother and she looked like a ripped her
- 6:54thing open, and I yelled at her she did and
- 6:57I did see no move from her whatsoever. I just
- 7:00for around a walk down.
- 7:03Speaker 4: Interestingly, Daryl never mentions performing CPR, and while police now
- 7:08know it likely wouldn't have saved Sheila, that's not something
- 7:12Daryl would have known for sure. And right here comes
- 7:15the second lucky break for the team killer, because every
- 7:19good murder needs a fall guy, and the police have
- 7:22just taken the bait with Daryl. Shortly afterwards, Daryl's interview
- 7:27wraps up, the scene is secured, and officers return to
- 7:30the station to await the autopsy results. But as investigators
- 7:33leave the house, they would overlook a crucial piece of evidence.
- 7:37Lying beneath Shila Tenpenny's body was a men's wrist watch,
- 7:41a seemingly insignificant detail that would later become one of
- 7:44the key pieces of evidence used to solve the entire case.
- 7:50One week passes and then comes the update. Investigators have
- 7:54been waiting for the forensic and DNA results arrive, completely
- 7:58overturning their initialsts. Asumptions, investigators determined that Sheila Tenpenny had
- 8:03suffered blunt force trauma to the head and neck before
- 8:06ultimately being strangled to death, but they also confirmed something crucial.
- 8:10Sheila had managed to fight back. On her hands and
- 8:13beneath her fingernails are traces of blood and tufts of
- 8:16hair DNA belonging to an unknown male. With these disturbing findings,
- 8:21there is no longer any question this is a homicide.
- 8:27So early Monday morning, officers returned to the neighborhood, going
- 8:31door to door in search of anyone Sheila may have
- 8:33wronged and anyone with fresh defensive wounds. But in reality,
- 8:37the detectives couldn't be more off track, while the young
- 8:41killer quietly brags about the murder online, growing more confident
- 8:45by the hour, knowing the victim had absolutely no enemies,
- 8:49and as police begins surveying the neighborhood, they have no
- 8:53idea which interaction will bring them face to face with
- 8:56Sheila's killer.
- 8:58Speaker 3: So you're one of the trusted family men.
- 9:00Speaker 16: What we're doing is getting elimination DNA from anybody we
- 9:03talked to as long as you're willing. Thank you very much.
- 9:06Speaker 3: And then how about your hand. Just let me double
- 9:08check your hands.
- 9:09Speaker 16: I know you work with them on the air side. Yeah,
- 9:11that's great.
- 9:12Speaker 3: I can't believe that heaven, that'll lead or anything.
- 9:15Speaker 22: U there's a lot going on, I'll say, so this
- 9:19is just part of the process.
- 9:21Speaker 7: Here's my card before.
- 9:22Speaker 5: I forget in case you have anything else or need
- 9:25to reach out, email.
- 9:26Speaker 15: And phone numbers on there.
- 9:28Speaker 16: Find it full and he needs to die.
- 9:31Speaker 4: I'm I wish we did that more often, to be honest.
- 9:35Speaker 15: With you, I mean, you know, if it gets out,
- 9:37you're gonna do it again.
- 9:38Speaker 21: You can't here.
- 9:39Speaker 16: Don't check that. Yeah, don't fix it. I agree.
- 9:43Speaker 7: Okay, you're good there, Come up here soon.
- 9:45Speaker 3: I know this is a pain in the ass, man,
- 9:47but I definitely appreciate it.
- 9:49Speaker 16: So you guys think this is a random thing, I
- 9:53want to say, no, I do well.
- 9:56Speaker 22: But from while I've heard you know, the guy down
- 9:59on that new house over there, and a couple others.
- 10:02I've been out here having my sigarette. I hear I
- 10:06think the brother doesn't arrest him in a couple of
- 10:08three days. I'm like, what now a reason why?
- 10:14Speaker 20: I don't know.
- 10:17Speaker 3: That's just a speculation, right, that's interesting.
- 10:21Speaker 4: After speaking with more than a dozen people, officers uncover
- 10:24a major new rumor. Many in the village suspect Sheila's
- 10:28own brother, Darryl is responsible. With this as their only
- 10:33real lead, another team of officers, led by Special Agent
- 10:37Richard Ward, makes a surprise visit to Darrell's house less
- 10:40than a mile away, and for the actual killer, the
- 10:42plan appears to be working even better than he imagined.
- 10:45Suspicion has successfully shifted onto Sheila's own family member, pulling
- 10:50detectives completely off his trail as they begin focusing in
- 10:53on Daryl for now, though, officers have just arrived at
- 10:56Darrel's house, where would soon become clear just how lucky
- 10:59the god and why Darryl makes the perfect fall guy.
- 11:04Speaker 3: I'm still good to lost my mother.
- 11:06Speaker 7: I'm not straightening any now.
- 11:09Speaker 8: And now that now I got.
- 11:12Speaker 16: What we're to deal with, Well you aren't lying?
- 11:17Speaker 7: And well these are here are all these boxes?
- 11:21Speaker 3: Where do you hang out at?
- 11:22Speaker 7: Come in there?
- 11:24Speaker 23: Hey?
- 11:24Speaker 24: I need to ask your favorite, just the one to remember.
- 11:27I got your swaps. I need you one more thing.
- 11:30Could you just show me your shirt underneath your shirt?
- 11:33Speaker 7: Then you don't.
- 11:34Speaker 24: I just want to make sure. I do want to
- 11:36satisfy myself. I don't think you've ever hurt anybody.
- 11:40Speaker 21: Question.
- 11:42Speaker 16: Okay, so you.
- 11:45Speaker 3: Have any idea when the.
- 11:46Speaker 7: Fuel is gonna be? They won't release the body yet.
- 11:50Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 11:53Speaker 21: I was going to see you that.
- 11:58Speaker 16: Say where you are?
- 12:00Speaker 7: Okay with that?
- 12:00Speaker 4: Because suffice that to say. Detective Ward is taken aback
- 12:07by Daryl's unusual living situation, but still no scratches, and
- 12:12so the investigation takes a step back. There is seemingly
- 12:15no one they can tie to the murder. No enemies,
- 12:18no leads, nothing, But that's because they're looking at this
- 12:22crime completely the wrong way. With the investigation at a standstill,
- 12:28officers canvassing the area continue knocking on doors until they
- 12:31reached the neighbor directly across the street, just fifty feet
- 12:35from the victim's home. It's one of the homes where
- 12:38no one answered earlier, and as they approach the front door,
- 12:41the homeowner, Rebecca steps outside, unaware that in the next
- 12:46few minutes, her life is about to be turned upside down.
- 12:51Speaker 10: So I don't know when it actually happened. I know
- 12:53that we saw the trucks on or cars or on Sunday.
- 12:57So and actually Sunday at like six a m. We
- 13:03had to run to the er because my son, the cat,
- 13:08I guess we'll sleeping on his face and they start
- 13:10each other in the dark. Oh scratched him, and so
- 13:13we were worried that it could be bad or impacted onto. Yeah,
- 13:17he's fine, It wasn't a big deal. But it was
- 13:19just like traumatizing and I was like everybody in the.
- 13:21Speaker 4: Car just a few feet away. Thirteen year old Levi
- 13:26Cart looks through the living room window and notices his
- 13:30mother speaking with police officers. Panicking, he pauses the YouTube
- 13:34video he was watching, runs up to his room, and
- 13:37locks the door back. Outside, officers begin piecing things together.
- 13:42The boy with fresh scratches across his body could very
- 13:45well be tied to Sheila's murder. In a few moments,
- 13:48detectives will step inside to follow up on this lead,
- 13:51but what they will soon find will defy their expectations.
- 13:56But before we get to that, it's worth noting that
- 13:58covering stories like this, you've realized just how much people
- 14:01are forced to carry fear trauma, even the day to
- 14:05day burden of surviving. And sometimes that weight shows up
- 14:09in other ways too, like debt. Do you feel crushed
- 14:11by debt? Those high interest loans, that mountain of credit

- 15:29the scene where detectives are about to go inside Rebecca's house.
- 15:32Unknown to them, what they're about to find inside will
- 15:36be nothing like they expect.
- 15:38Speaker 15: You. Do you care if we come in or you them?
- 15:40Speaker 10: Okay, all right, I do think you can.
- 15:47Speaker 3: Problem Come on in.
- 15:49Speaker 15: Hey, guys, you want to you want to come out here?
- 16:00Speaker 20: I haven't been.
- 16:03Speaker 7: There and people who are.
- 16:06Speaker 23: Investigating are talking everybody and the.
- 16:17Speaker 15: Goodbye.
- 16:18Speaker 3: Can I talk to you?
- 16:20Speaker 15: Do you want to talk in the living room or do.
- 16:21Speaker 7: You want to talk in your room?
- 16:22Speaker 3: There are people talk about.
- 16:25Speaker 15: Something earlier this year.
- 16:28Speaker 20: I know what game are you playing over there?
- 16:32Speaker 15: Yeah? Dexter, Oh he's uh, he's cap cutting.
- 16:37Speaker 3: Oh, now you are.
- 16:43Speaker 25: Down.
- 16:45Speaker 4: Naturally, this is not the suspect the detectives were hoping
- 16:48to see. As thirteen year old Hunter Cart enters the room,
- 16:52realizing they may have jumped to conclusions, the detectives still
- 16:56begin to question the boy. Perhaps he knows something, after all, the.
- 17:00Speaker 13: One with me, I have your final investigation, and we're
- 17:04just talking to people to see if they might have
- 17:06heard or seen anything unusual.
- 17:07Speaker 15: That happened over the weekend.
- 17:10Speaker 7: No. Uh, my brother got into an entry and he
- 17:19had to go to the er. I got really sick
- 17:22and started vomiting and stuff.
- 17:26Speaker 3: So, how are you feeling a lot better?
- 17:29Speaker 15: That's good.
- 17:30Speaker 7: That whole day was just kind of a burd for everybody.
- 17:34Speaker 2: Unless it's something that happened a long time ago that's memorable,
- 17:39It's not really something I remember, unless it, like, is
- 17:42really really brought up.
- 17:44Speaker 4: Although Hunter is unable to provide any new details, he
- 17:47seems fairly cooperative and willing to help. His twin brother, Levi,
- 17:51on the other hand, is still in his room, refusing
- 17:55to come out. Earlier, their mother had mentioned Levi was
- 17:58editing Dexter, a crime drama centered around a vigilante serial
- 18:02killer they show both detectives are all too familiar with,
- 18:05and it's here the detectives would begin to realize their
- 18:08initial hunch about Rebecca's sons may not have been a
- 18:12coincidence after all.
- 18:14Speaker 13: Yeah, it's usually never quick, but that's actually pretty quick.
- 18:21Speaker 1: I was editing Dexter. Sometimes I edit, but he likes
- 18:25to make.
- 18:26Speaker 7: Videos for Yeah, that the cat that got you there
- 18:32on the nose. I don't know.
- 18:33Speaker 23: I don't know.
- 18:36Speaker 1: That We both started each other because my dad was
- 18:39right there was here and okay, so we've been knowing
- 18:48for a while that we needed to that we needed
- 18:52to cut their nails saying that so us moving, I mean,
- 19:00we know everybody knows that cats just are awkwards, So
- 19:04us moving, Marshmallow being weird because we're moving. And yes,
- 19:13we had a like a play set for them, and
- 19:17they we packed it up. So that's also probably another thing.
- 19:22So yeah, me and him just randomly solved each other.
- 19:27He scraped me on the neck. I'm not sure if
- 19:29you can see you.
- 19:30Speaker 3: Okay, where else did you get it?
- 19:32Speaker 1: He kind of scraped coming on my face a little bit, uh,
- 19:38and then mainly my nose, and I was yeah, I
- 19:43was just kicking myself up.
- 19:46Speaker 7: It was pretty deep.
- 19:47Speaker 21: Pretty deep.
- 19:52Speaker 1: We went back to the house after we got out
- 19:57of the doctor, and then that's we saw the ambulances.
- 20:01I don't know a lot of it's a blur because
- 20:04I try to clean myself up, so I was distracted
- 20:06in power.
- 20:08Speaker 4: Interestingly, both brothers use the same word blur when recalling
- 20:13the incident, and while traumatic events, even something like death
- 20:17of a neighbor can affect memory, what catches officers attention
- 20:20far more is the Wayne Levi seems to over explain
- 20:24what happened. He claims the deep scratches came from a
- 20:27fight with a housecat, something officers find difficult to believe
- 20:31given the severity of the wounds. So with this in mind,
- 20:35detectives believe that despite their young age, the brothers have
- 20:38given them enough probable cause to take the next step.
- 20:43The detectives asked to speak with Rebecca outside for a
- 20:46moment where they request permission to collect DNA from both
- 20:49of her sons. Without much hesitation, she agrees, but when
- 20:53the three of them return, one of the brothers would
- 20:55have a very different reaction to being tested.
- 20:58Speaker 15: Do you might have come? I can explain it to you.
- 21:01Speaker 10: Yeah, he's feeling a little over a long time.
- 21:04Speaker 1: Yeah, I feel like I don't I've been to enough
- 21:07doctors recently.
- 21:08Speaker 20: I don't want to know.
- 21:10Speaker 13: Have you seen any like crime shows or anything?
- 21:12Speaker 7: You know how we kind of do our job.
- 21:14Speaker 13: The medical stuff is a little different than the.
- 21:16Speaker 7: Law enforce and stuff.
- 21:17Speaker 13: But I don't know if she explained to you, but
- 21:20we're just gonna swab your cheek and it's not gonna
- 21:22go and then the database or anything. But we're gonna
- 21:24compare it against stuff that we have that makes sense,
- 21:29and it will.
- 21:29Speaker 15: Take two seconds. It's just you don't have to do anything.
- 21:34Speaker 13: But obviously we're asking everybody on the street, and it
- 21:38would be super helpful if you couldn't.
- 21:42Speaker 15: Okay, and you're Levi right, you guysis, it would be
- 21:51easier if you.
- 21:51Speaker 7: Sit down for your legs. I don't have to do
- 21:55it first.
- 21:55Speaker 10: I can be the any of.
- 22:04Speaker 4: The detectives proceed to take DNA swabs from both brothers,
- 22:07though Hunter and Rebecca are clearly far more willing to
- 22:11cooperate than Levi. But what one of the brothers doesn't
- 22:14seem to realize is that the more he talks, the
- 22:16more the cart brothers begin to look less like witnesses
- 22:19and more like suspects.
- 22:23Speaker 2: Just from s yeah you can show them.
- 22:27Speaker 3: Sorry, oh yeah.
- 22:32Speaker 26: Years ago permission scars doctor Stevenson.
- 22:46Speaker 15: It's where they go in and they test that links
- 22:50to You're like.
- 22:51Speaker 2: What do you guys suspect or what do you guys
- 22:54know about what happens?
- 22:57Speaker 16: Well, I can tell you this. It shouldn't happen, and
- 23:00we need to figure out why it happened so that,
- 23:03you know, hopefully we can keep it from happening again,
- 23:05because we'd hate to miss some evidence. And if you've
- 23:08watched any TV, we don't want to be those cops
- 23:11that forgot to do this or look into that.
- 23:13Speaker 7: We have watched.
- 23:14Speaker 27: You know.
- 23:17Speaker 15: It's kind of like.
- 23:21Speaker 28: And especially my brother knows a lot, I would say, definitely,
- 23:26my brother knows a lot about just the police.
- 23:31Speaker 10: In generals to go into the Marines when he gets.
- 23:36Speaker 16: Well recruitment, there's always there everybody's looking for. Yeah, there's
- 23:46there's a spot for everybody. In my opinion, me.
- 23:49Speaker 2: And loss I both agreed that him especially is a
- 23:53lot more sure than most kids our age.
- 23:56Speaker 16: Oh so you can handle this news, You guys are
- 23:59handling pretty well yes.
- 24:02Speaker 4: Strangely, Hunter continues offering interesting details without being prompted, insisting
- 24:08that the teen brothers are far more mature than most
- 24:11kids their age, and when he brings up Levi's injuries,
- 24:14Levi becomes visibly uncomfortable, giving his brother a long, chilling stare.
- 24:21By the end of the interview, the twins no longer
- 24:24seem like ordinary kids to the detectives. Their fascination with
- 24:28true crime, gory shows like Dexter, foggy Memory, and of course,
- 24:32the hard to explain cat scratches on Levi all point
- 24:36towards something deeply unsettling. With DNA collected, investigators return to
- 24:41the station to brief the sergeant on everything they've uncovered.
- 24:44Now all they can do is wait for the DNA
- 24:47results from Darryl, the cart twins, and several neighbors and
- 24:50family friends to come back the following day. Still believing
- 24:53a deranged killer maybe at work, investigators know that until
- 24:57he or they are caught, no one in this quiet
- 25:00village is truly safe. The next day, the DNA results
- 25:08finally come in and investigators are stunned. Both of Rebecca's
- 25:12sons are a match, but that doesn't necessarily mean they
- 25:15were both at the scene. According to the forensic analyst,
- 25:18the lab cannot tell Levi's DNA apart from hunters because
- 25:22identical twins share the same ASTR markers. Needless to say,
- 25:26investigators are now facing an extraordinarily rare problem. But even
- 25:30with these findings, detectives struggle to process the facts that
- 25:34the suspects are only thirteen years old. Not only would
- 25:37they have to be deeply disturbed, but they would also
- 25:39need the physical strength to carry out a crime this violent.
- 25:43Then again, their age could also work in the investigator's favor.
- 25:46Teenagers are more likely to slip up, confess to friends
- 25:49or family, or leave evidence of their actions somewhere online.
- 25:53The problem is detectives have enough probable cause for a
- 25:56search warrant, but not enough to formally detec Rebecca or
- 26:01either brother, something they absolutely cannot let the family realize. Nevertheless,
- 26:06they returned to the family home, hoping they can persuade
- 26:09Rebecca to bring her sons to the station, allowing investigators
- 26:12to begin searching the house the moment they leave. But
- 26:15the situation is incredibly delicate. One wrong move could spook
- 26:19the family and shut down the entire investigation.
- 26:26Speaker 20: We're back.
- 26:27Speaker 15: Yeah, we just walked in the house.
- 26:32Speaker 21: You need to come in.
- 26:33Speaker 5: What's going on?
- 26:34Speaker 15: That'll be great. We have a couple of days to
- 26:36talk about.
- 26:36Speaker 29: Oh, guys, you just say so as.
- 27:00Speaker 15: You're good yet you want to see.
- 27:01Speaker 3: Somewhere It's okay, Yeah, just relax.
- 27:14Speaker 15: You guys are good. Okay, do you guys want to
- 27:18sit down here? Would get more comfortable?
- 27:22Speaker 3: Did you get case too?
- 27:23Speaker 15: Yes, we literally just walked in the door.
- 27:26Speaker 5: We need to talk to essentially each of you, and
- 27:30we're wondering if we can go down to the police
- 27:32department just we have a better area to talk.
- 27:35Speaker 13: Okay, So if you guys want, let's put some shoes
- 27:39and socks.
- 27:40Speaker 15: On, maybe a cop and then we'll head head that way.
- 27:44Speaker 4: Clearly, detectives didn't derive with a strong plan and are
- 27:48instead relying heavily on improvisation. Somehow, though, despite not having
- 27:53their answers fully prepared, they appear to be succeeding in
- 27:56getting the family to the station voluntarily. But that can
- 27:59only work for so long before someone catches on.
- 28:05Speaker 15: Uh, we need to be getting lawyers or something.
- 28:08Speaker 3: I'm feelings less about that.
- 28:10Speaker 15: I don't know. You're welcome to call an attorney.
- 28:15Speaker 21: Also like, do we have to go.
- 28:21Speaker 7: Just like right now?
- 28:22Speaker 23: Thing?
- 28:22Speaker 15: Or we would like yes, it would make.
- 28:27Speaker 3: You don't have to do anything. I suppose right, Okay,
- 28:33I don't know. I feel uncomfortable.
- 28:35Speaker 15: We get how about we get there. We can explain
- 28:37kind of.
- 28:38Speaker 5: What's going on, give you some more info and you
- 28:39can always you know.
- 28:41Speaker 10: Okay, what do you want to going on before we
- 28:43head out there?
- 28:44Speaker 15: And do you like if we do that outside?
- 28:46Speaker 7: Sure?
- 28:47Speaker 3: You guys want to wait a second?
- 28:49Speaker 15: Is that what you mean? All three of you outside
- 28:52if possible?
- 28:53Speaker 3: Okay, we just needed we need to go over.
- 28:55Speaker 10: Some things in the neighborhood with your name, if we.
- 28:57Speaker 7: Could go back to there so we don't have to
- 28:58sit in the rain.
- 28:59Speaker 17: Yeah, and we got some some pitches I want to
- 29:02show you and I'll show you and your sons, and
- 29:06there's a bunch of stuff we want to talk to
- 29:07you about.
- 29:08Speaker 7: So alright, you guys good?
- 29:11Speaker 3: Are you in under suspecial for something?
- 29:14Speaker 7: We just want to talk to you.
- 29:15Speaker 24: I think you guys can help us clear a lot
- 29:18of things up around here.
- 29:19Speaker 7: So okay, all right, all right, let's go.
- 29:25Speaker 30: Hey, John and you'll ride with you? Okay, that works
- 29:34for you know, I just got to make sure there's
- 29:35nothing on you. It's gonna stick me, toking me, cut me.
- 29:38Actually if you want to step over there to him
- 29:40right there, all right, you just have a secret there
- 29:44for me.
- 29:50Speaker 15: Do you have to put this on you for the
- 29:53whull three blocks?
- 29:58Speaker 7: Probably will Ian's depresional thing that we can't talk about.
- 30:04Speaker 15: Yeah, I don't know what's going on.
- 30:06Speaker 9: You are.
- 30:09Speaker 21: Well, very very.
- 30:13Speaker 15: My anxiety levels went.
- 30:15Speaker 16: You're well, I don't know why there's so many like
- 30:19police vehicles either.
- 30:21Speaker 7: Yeah, that's definitely what scared me.
- 30:24Speaker 23: Immediately pull up like one person's there, didn't see it
- 30:28that got pulled up.
- 30:30Speaker 15: And then it's all just like why are they what's
- 30:33the reason.
- 30:34Speaker 7: Sure, I don't know.
- 30:35Speaker 23: Maybe it's an intimidation tactic, I guess, but well I
- 30:38don't know why really trying to invest imitate that right.
- 30:42Speaker 4: Miraculously, despite the detective sloppy handling of the situation and
- 30:46Rebecca's growing skepticism, they still managed to convince the family
- 30:50to come to the station. For now, they've purposely kept
- 30:53the twins together, hoping the cameras might catch something incriminating.
- 30:57But the brothers have seen this tactic before and say nothing,
- 31:01foolishly convinced they're out smartening the police. Investigators have also
- 31:05just confiscated their phones and obtained house keys from Rebecca,
- 31:09allowing them to begin searching the home for any evidence
- 31:11tying the boys to the crime. But despite these small victories,
- 31:15this is where detectives would face a major reality check
- 31:18about their strategy. Upon arriving at the station, the twins
- 31:23are quietly escorted through a separate entrance and separated from
- 31:26their mother. The twins don't seem particularly worried, calmly following
- 31:31detectives into the interrogation rooms, but for Rebecca, the situation
- 31:36is very different because the moment she's finally informed that
- 31:40her sons are about to be questioned without her present,
- 31:44all hell breaks loose.
- 31:47Speaker 3: I don't want food.
- 31:48Speaker 10: I want answer our lawyer and have my children SAPPI
- 31:52questioned without a lawyer process immediately, So.
- 31:56Speaker 15: Let's make that happen. What were no? Fuck, They'll get
- 32:02that picked up right. We need to have them right now.
- 32:07My slippers we just got home from the doctor's office.
- 32:10Speaker 3: Those things so comfy.
- 32:11Speaker 15: They are compy Amazon.
- 32:13Speaker 10: Not uh yeah, people are so gainst early. I know
- 32:19you're being friendly. I need to know my children are
- 32:22not being plish. Then no, they have a lawyer. You
- 32:24didn't let us know that we're being detained.
- 32:26Speaker 3: You're not being entertained.
- 32:27Speaker 16: You're free to go.
- 32:28Speaker 10: You didn't let us know that you were detaining my children.
- 32:31They're freely You did not. Right now, They're allowed to leave,
- 32:35right now, Let's go right now, right now. You said
- 32:42they're allowed to leave, yes or no, you cannot take them.
- 32:46Speaker 4: Clearly, this is not how detectives hoped things would go.
- 32:50Rebecca is furious, and not without reason. The detective just
- 32:55admitted that the boys are free to leave, yet does
- 32:58nothing when Rebecca did exactly that. On top of that,
- 33:02her phone has been confiscated, making it impossible for her
- 33:06to even call the lawyer. It's here that the risk
- 33:09behind the detective's strategy, or lack thereof, becomes impossible to ignore.
- 33:14The advantage of this approach is that by withholding the
- 33:17real reason the boys are there, detectives limit the information
- 33:20the suspects can tailor their stories to, making contradictions and
- 33:24inconsistencies much easier to catch later. That said, when those
- 33:28suspects are miners and detectives need their mother's cooperation. This
- 33:33strategy can quickly backfire, undermining trust and damaging the legitimacy
- 33:37of the entire process, and unsurprisingly, Rebecca's outrage is only
- 33:42beginning as she storms out of the interrogation room in
- 33:45search of anyone willing to tell her what's really going on.
- 33:49Speaker 10: Are you accusing them of murder enough? Is that why
- 33:54they're being detained because they're under suspicion for murder? The question,
- 33:59how would they know anything unless you were accusing them
- 34:03of murder and you think that they murdered someone. So
- 34:06I'm saying, this whole charade, this whole the way we've
- 34:10gone about this and approached it and slowly showed things
- 34:14to me because I've asked questions and not because you
- 34:17are transparent, is not okay. It literally just says we
- 34:22have the ability to search all of your belongings. It
- 34:25doesn't say.
- 34:26Speaker 15: For what reason would they want to search it.
- 34:28Speaker 9: The book it.
- 34:28Speaker 15: Says murder because we're investigating the murder of the neighbor.
- 34:33Speaker 10: And my thirteen year olds have not murdered any Okay, Well,
- 34:36we're trying to find a further information that was disabled
- 34:39yesterday to put the pieces to the other.
- 34:41Speaker 31: So I'm not going to be told by anything.
- 34:50Speaker 15: Why am I not being questioned? We would love to
- 34:53talk to you, if you would be willing to talk.
- 34:55I'm literally standing here waiting.
- 34:57Speaker 13: Well, we were trying to talk to you, but you
- 34:59want to make one calls and to all those things.
- 35:00Speaker 15: If you'd like to talk and talk.
- 35:02Speaker 7: You're well aware.
- 35:06Speaker 10: Hey, a lot and nothing because I'm not tilling.
- 35:15Speaker 15: Soon because I asked for a lawyer for the boys.
- 35:17Speaker 3: He's saying because we talked, I'm asking him.
- 35:21Speaker 15: Sorry, I'm really working search.
- 35:22Speaker 7: I know, I understand, I understand I'd ever liked to
- 35:25be working.
- 35:25Speaker 3: I'm just trying to I'm just trying to sort it out,
- 35:27all right. So I wonder under what grounds are they
- 35:29being questioned?
- 35:29Speaker 17: What prompted them there was a downe half of the
- 35:32I understand that, But what what specifically about our boys
- 35:36is causing you guys to bring them to the station
- 35:38for questioning those details.
- 35:40Speaker 16: I don't know, because those investigations know more about that
- 35:43than I did.
- 35:45Speaker 17: Are there other Are you guys bringing in every neighbor
- 35:48to we did twenty five yesterday?
- 35:51Speaker 16: I know myself in another agent to the station. Well,
- 35:53I don't know how many people got brought here. This
- 35:56is we're also doing a search work cops too, So
- 35:59Judges hands us.
- 36:00Speaker 3: Search warrant for her house and who else?
- 36:02Speaker 16: Well, the search warrant is for the house and the
- 36:05Viet Loong the properties.
- 36:08Speaker 7: Okay, where there other search warrants for?
- 36:11Speaker 17: Enoughingmarse, you guys are questioning two thirteen year old boys.
- 36:15Speaker 3: Well, we're not.
- 36:17Speaker 15: Someone is.
- 36:18Speaker 16: You're absolutely correct, but I don't know what I'm saying
- 36:20I do.
- 36:23Speaker 15: This is why we need carlaurd Doun here.
- 36:24Speaker 3: Now we need to make this happen.
- 36:26Speaker 10: I don't have a phone, so this needs to happen
- 36:30on your own immediately, whoever we call.
- 36:33Speaker 4: After getting little to know answers from the detectives, the
- 36:36twins father calls a lawyer, hoping he can intervene, But
- 36:40even with legal counsel now on the way, detectives press
- 36:43forward with the interviews, fully aware of the risk they're taking.
- 36:47At the same time, ever since the boys left with
- 36:50the police, a search of their home has been underway,
- 36:53and very soon it will begin, yielding crucial evidence for
- 36:56the interrogations. As bo brothers wait for their interrogations to begin,
- 37:02it quickly becomes clear that one of them is about
- 37:05to be treated very differently. Because Hunter had been significantly
- 37:09more talkative the day before, detectives opt for a more casual,
- 37:12friendly approach, and even his interrogation room reflects that. Levi,
- 37:17on the other hand, is placed in a cold, cramped
- 37:20room subjected to the kind of interrogation tactics typically reserved
- 37:23for an adult suspect. Based on the scratch marks alone,
- 37:27detectives strongly suspects Levi is the killer, but there is
- 37:30still nothing rolling out the possibility that Hunter may have
- 37:33helped him, especially after learning that Levi has significant mobility issues. Now,
- 37:38with a lawyer on the way to the station and
- 37:40two furious parents pacing outside, the clock is ticking, so
- 37:45detectives split into two groups to question the boys simultaneously,
- 37:49and as the questioning begins, Hunter's interview escalates far quicker
- 37:53than expected because there's something he needs to get off
- 37:57his chest to.
- 37:59Speaker 3: Say for doing the same.
- 38:07Speaker 7: Of course, I feel a little pressured, but I don't
- 38:09feel like I.
- 38:10Speaker 20: Have to sign those I don't know.
- 38:12Speaker 27: It's more suspicious to put on me if I don't
- 38:15answer any questions.
- 38:16Speaker 3: So, yeah, we're here to talk. I ask questions future story.
- 38:20I know you told Wauren a little bit.
- 38:24Speaker 27: Yeah, I want to say, I don't think my brother
- 38:29would be able to do anything. But because that day
- 38:34he got scratches on his face. Because of that day
- 38:36he it all seems like a very wide coincidence, because
- 38:40of course his cat was face is fat, His face
- 38:44was scratify cat.
- 38:46Speaker 7: We talked about it, and it certainly looks like Lewis
- 38:48has some like the coincidences are there.
- 38:54Speaker 4: At this early stage of the interview, Hunter, completely unprompted,
- 38:58begins talking about the scratch wounds, which he believes are
- 39:02the most concrete evidence against his brother, But while he
- 39:05frames it as a coincidence, back at the house, police
- 39:08executing the search warrant notice something that immediately casts doubt
- 39:12on the story. On Rebecca's bed, they find the family cat, Marshmallow,
- 39:16sitting completely calm, but more importantly, the cat's claws seem
- 39:21far too small to match the injuries on Levi. This
- 39:25information is relayed back to detectives at the station where
- 39:28Hunter and Levi are being interviewed, and while Hunter appears
- 39:31eager to talk, Levi's interview is moving far more slowly
- 39:35as detectives focus on building rapport and choosing their words
- 39:39extremely carefully, so seeing just how much more talkative Hunter is,
- 39:43investigators keep their focus on him for now, hoping he
- 39:46can offer further insight into his brother or perhaps even
- 39:50turn on him.
- 39:52Speaker 7: Yeah, extra like red scratch marks on his face.
- 39:57Speaker 27: I mean, that seems all suspicious, But like I said,
- 40:01I don't think he could do something like that. I'm
- 40:05gonna keep saying this, but this makes me feel really
- 40:07upset because a lot of evidence is piled up against him.
- 40:10Speaker 21: But like.
- 40:12Speaker 7: I mean, I don't know if you guys respect him
- 40:14of anything, but.
- 40:19Speaker 27: I truly don't believe he he could do anything like that,
- 40:29even though he has all these things.
- 40:32Speaker 3: He's never talked about anything like that would feel.
- 40:36Speaker 15: Because anything like what.
- 40:39Speaker 8: About hurting somebody or when he gets triggered, he gets
- 40:42upset and acting out in the saying things or you know.
- 40:46Speaker 3: I don't know how he behaves.
- 40:48Speaker 27: No, No, like I said, No, he doesn't behave weirdly
- 40:51or triggered.
- 40:52Speaker 7: He just doesn't.
- 40:55Speaker 5: He's just.
- 40:57Speaker 3: Quiet.
- 40:57Speaker 7: It's upsetting for him.
- 40:58Speaker 27: Like he started crying when he got back to his
- 41:03house because he said he never gives an ex editions
- 41:08why he sugar.
- 41:11Speaker 4: Interestingly, although Hunter describes the suspicious behavior he's noticed from
- 41:15his brother, he continues to insist that Levi could not
- 41:18actually be responsible for the murder, but detectives can't tell
- 41:22whether his reaction is genuine or part of a calculated
- 41:25effort to distance himself from the crime. At this stage,
- 41:29though there fairly certain Levi is the culprit, and decide
- 41:33it's time to stop speculating and focus on something more concrete,
- 41:37so they turned to a key piece of evidence. Hunter
- 41:39can't deny something they had kept hidden from the twins,
- 41:43a watch recovered from beneath Sheila's body, one investigators initially dismissed,
- 41:48but now strongly suspect belongs to one of the two boys,
- 41:52and whether he realizes it or not, what he says
- 41:55next would see other fate.
- 41:59Speaker 16: That's loose, that's loose his watch, all right? What do
- 42:06you think about that?
- 42:07Speaker 27: Uh?
- 42:08Speaker 16: What do you mean by apparently winding it out?
- 42:10Speaker 3: And that's the picture?
- 42:13Speaker 21: What do you think that's the picture of?
- 42:17Speaker 7: Try to get some depressive We don't have any of
- 42:21those like this, right, it's not your else. No. I
- 42:29remember him saying that he lost his watch, and when
- 42:32did he say that?
- 42:34Speaker 3: After he.
- 42:41Speaker 7: After he got hung.
- 42:43Speaker 10: Also, he.
- 42:46Speaker 27: He sounded the way he said, I don't know where
- 42:49I watched this. I don't feel a person could say that.
- 42:54A person say it that way knowing that you know
- 42:59they were their watch. When if they did that, are you.
- 43:05Speaker 3: Saying he purposely.
- 43:08Speaker 15: Hurt?
- 43:09Speaker 25: We don't.
- 43:10Speaker 7: We don't know what you was.
- 43:16Speaker 15: How would you even do that?
- 43:17Speaker 7: He's sable.
- 43:19Speaker 27: How would you sneak out of the house, get into
- 43:23the house, stab somebody?
- 43:27Speaker 7: Is it true that he.
- 43:29Speaker 10: Them? Is that true?
- 43:33Speaker 7: Did you find you in evidence?
- 43:36Speaker 3: We're not gonna.
- 43:38Speaker 15: There's no way he would do that. There's some stuff
- 43:40that happens that details.
- 43:42Speaker 3: There's no way.
- 43:44Speaker 15: There's no way. If he.
- 43:53Speaker 3: Ye, there's no way.
- 43:57Speaker 9: M h.
- 44:01Speaker 15: There misunders Daddy.
- 44:12Speaker 4: At the thought of his own brother being responsible for
- 44:15the murder, Hunter appears to completely break down. Detectives realize
- 44:20he's now too emotional and overwhelmed to provide any more
- 44:23reliable information, so they decide to end the interview. Despite
- 44:28failing to secure a confession and not fully rulling him
- 44:31out as a suspect, still they've learned something important. More
- 44:35insight into Levi and confirmation that his watch was indeed
- 44:39at the scene, but just outside the interrogation room. The
- 44:44boy's parents continue arguing with deputies and with a lawyer
- 44:47coming to intervene. Investigators are running out of time if
- 44:51they want to secure an admission before the interview is
- 44:53shut down. They know they need to raise the stakes
- 44:56with Levi, so the detectives interviewing him finally move on
- 45:00from building rapport and shift the conversation to the scratches,
- 45:03testing whether his explanation matches the one he gave the
- 45:06day before.
- 45:08Speaker 9: Do you know what we're investigating?
- 45:12Speaker 15: I mean, I know something happened down.
- 45:14Speaker 7: The street, across the store, across the street, right in
- 45:17front of me.
- 45:17Speaker 21: Right, a woman was murdered, right, So we're trying to
- 45:21find out what happened.
- 45:23Speaker 31: I mean, I've already talked to as the I investigators.
- 45:26Speaker 21: My cat had randomly woke me.
- 45:29Speaker 16: Up with all the lights off, like sitting on my
- 45:35sitting on my neck.
- 45:37Speaker 21: So it like scratched my face. I felt very bloody.
- 45:42Speaker 31: Obviously, there's a lot of scraps with on me, usually
- 45:46because my disability as well.
- 45:49Speaker 21: I used like a like a shower chair.
- 45:53Speaker 31: Yeah, because I can't really stand for that long without
- 45:57getting like super fatigued and falling or walking around for
- 46:01too long, and didn't use his powercare. So I didn't
- 46:03want to make a bunch of No, I didn't make anybody, yeah,
- 46:05wrote So I ended up literally.
- 46:08Speaker 4: Falling and I fell and like hit my head on
- 46:12the on the power house.
- 46:15Speaker 21: Where'd you hear it?
- 46:16Speaker 3: U shaped like around here, like right here?
- 46:21Speaker 15: So I don't know how I should believe more?
- 46:24Speaker 21: Yes, yes.
- 46:27Speaker 4: As Levi once again over explains the incident, detectives notice
- 46:31he makes a point of emphasizing that the injuries became
- 46:34worse after he slipped in the shower. But something else
- 46:37in Levi's account immediately stands out. After mentioning his medical condition,
- 46:42detectives recall reviewing his records and discovering that Levi has
- 46:46cerebro palsy. This brings the detectives back to an earlier question.
- 46:51Not only is Levi just thirteen years old, but his
- 46:54disability raises serious doubts about whether he was even physically
- 46:58capable of carrying out such a violent attack on his own,
- 47:02especially considering Shila fought back. Investigators no hunter is physically stronger,
- 47:07has no disability, and shares many of the same interests
- 47:10in true crime as his brother Levi. At this point,
- 47:14detectives are realizing they may have prematurely cleared Hunter, treating
- 47:18him more like a witness than a suspect, and in
- 47:20doing so, may have lost their chance to implicate him.
- 47:23But with the pressure mounting on Levi, this may be
- 47:26the perfect opportunity for him to turn on his brother,
- 47:29and for the first time during his interview, the bond
- 47:32between the twins is about to be truly tested.
- 47:37Speaker 31: We get in and like sirteen minutes fifteen, employer Mom
- 47:44fartino us firms outside and she opens the window and
- 47:50she's like, oh my god, something happens to me, and
- 47:55me already in a like a panicked, weird state, I
- 48:00kind of started feeling emotionally triggered. And when she said
- 48:04there was a bunch of animalss outside, she or I,
- 48:10I like started if we got even more I just.
- 48:14Speaker 8: Felt even worse because Mom.
- 48:16Speaker 31: Had said that something had happened to denise our neighbor
- 48:19right in front of us, and I started feeling even
- 48:23worse just to the fact of that the same night
- 48:27that something happens or something like that had happened, that.
- 48:35Speaker 3: I had had an injury of my own.
- 48:38Speaker 4: Although Levi never directly blames his twin brother for the murder,
- 48:41he seems more focused on how bad the situation already
- 48:44looks for him, and as the interview continues, it would
- 48:48only get worse because detectives begin receiving critical updates from
- 48:52the house search that is still ongoing, and officers have
- 48:55started uncovering disturbing items Inside Levi's bedroom, Officers recover a
- 49:01journal containing violent writing and repeated references of wanting to
- 49:05kill someone. They also uncover a growing obsession with serial killers, books,
- 49:10online content, and material saved focused on infamous murderers, and
- 49:14in particular, Ted Bundy. Detectives begin to realize this was
- 49:20far more than just a morbid curiosity. Over time, what
- 49:23began as an interest in true crime had evolved into
- 49:27something far darker for Levi, and now detectives are left
- 49:31trying to determine whether this interest in violence had consumed
- 49:34them both. Because Levi and Hunter are twins, the blood
- 49:39DNA recovered at the scene is consistent with both of them,
- 49:42something detectives choose to intentionally keep from Levi. Instead, they
- 49:47plan to tell him that the DNA points specifically to him,
- 49:50hoping this pressure will make him crack. But if Levi
- 49:54is the criminal genius he thinks he is, he will
- 49:56easily be able to see through the detective's bluff.
- 50:00Speaker 21: So you said you've never been in Denise's house, never been, Okay?
- 50:04Do you know what DNA is? You ever heard of it?
- 50:08I've heard of it, Okay. So we're trying to figure
- 50:12out and I want you to help me explain this, Okay,
- 50:16Why your blood would be in Denise's house, That's what
- 50:20we're trying to figure out. Well, I'm not sure because.
- 50:28Speaker 3: I don't know, like.
- 50:30Speaker 21: How is it my blood?
- 50:31Speaker 3: Like why?
- 50:33Speaker 21: That's what we're trying to find out because I don't know.
- 50:36Speaker 32: I don't know why it would be in my house.
- 50:38Speaker 9: Because, yeah, that's what we're trying to figure out.
- 50:42Speaker 21: That's why we're even here right now.
- 50:44Speaker 9: Remember we got those swabs from you, Well, we compared
- 50:48that to the blood in the house, and it's not
- 50:50only her blood, it's your blood mixed in with it
- 50:54through DNA testing.
- 50:56Speaker 21: I don't know what explanation I could give you or
- 50:59even come up with that.
- 51:01Speaker 15: Will be.
- 51:03Speaker 21: Equivalent to how that would happen. There's only one person here.
- 51:10Speaker 3: That knows, and.
- 51:12Speaker 21: If you, how do you know that? Because there's no
- 51:16other way that part of you can be in that
- 51:19house without you never being in there. I can't agree
- 51:22with that, right, So that's why I just need an
- 51:25explanation as to how I'm just trying to wrap my
- 51:29brain around you know, Well I have to wrap my
- 51:33brain around it first. Yeah, either, So that's we need
- 51:35to wrap around together.
- 51:38Speaker 7: You know.
- 51:38Speaker 21: Can you help me that? I can't? If you help me,
- 51:43I can help you if you help me. I don't
- 51:45help you if I telling me the truth.
- 51:47Speaker 32: I told you that your though, I don't think you're
- 51:50telling me all the truth. But on my arm, well,
- 51:57I think you're about how you get hurt. We have
- 52:00your blood in her house and we're trying to figure out.
- 52:07Speaker 3: How go there.
- 52:08Speaker 21: That's the bottom line. Well what's the bottom line?
- 52:11Speaker 15: Are you sure to get my blood from somewhere?
- 52:13Speaker 21: We don't need your blood? We got swaps.
- 52:16Speaker 6: I just mean, like, did you did somebody put my
- 52:18blood in that house for a reason?
- 52:21Speaker 28: I don't know?
- 52:21Speaker 21: Would you tell me? Would they?
- 52:24Speaker 15: I didn't put your I have any enemy.
- 52:26Speaker 21: I didn't put your blood there.
- 52:28Speaker 6: I mean, I'm only thirteen. I don't know why anybody
- 52:30would put my blood in a house. But I mean,
- 52:35you know, is there any more fusting you have to
- 52:39me or like what?
- 52:41Speaker 21: Well, I just I want to get past this, and
- 52:44we're not getting past it. You don't know, I don't know,
- 52:48so we're not resolving anything. Well, I'm not sure if
- 52:51we cameras all of it. If I don't know, you
- 52:53don't know them, I need to listen.
- 52:57Speaker 8: I I whole heartedly believe that there's two types of
- 53:00people in this world. You've got monsters, You've got people.
- 53:03Speaker 9: Who make mistakes.
- 53:05Speaker 21: M I think I agree with the person of them.
- 53:09Help us explain this. What do you disagree with about that?
- 53:12Speaker 23: Stick?
- 53:12Speaker 21: I just think that you know, there's there's a lot
- 53:17of different types of people in the world. There's not
- 53:19monsters and people who commit mistakes.
- 53:21Speaker 8: Well, I'm simplifying things in terms of you know, a
- 53:24crime a murder, right, there's two types of people who
- 53:27would commit a murder. There's a monster and there's people
- 53:31who make mistakes.
- 53:33Speaker 21: Like an example of the.
- 53:36Speaker 31: With a murder, then it would be a monster, right,
- 53:39not necessarily, you don't think.
- 53:42Speaker 4: You still believing he's in control of the situation. Levin
- 53:46never asks for a lawyer or even his mother, and
- 53:49unsurprisingly fails to catch the detective's bluff about his DNA.
- 53:54But while Levi remains convinced he's outsmarted the police, he
- 53:57has no idea that well the evidence on in his
- 54:00room is already damning enough. What detectives are about to
- 54:03find on his phone will destroy any chance of walking free,
- 54:07because before long, detectives would receive the final and most
- 54:11crucial breakthrough in the investigation. After searching the brother's phones
- 54:17and social media activity, it begins to uncover a disturbing
- 54:20picture just one day after the murder. Levi writes, this
- 54:25one was a fighter, and detectives realize this wasn't a
- 54:29spur of the moment act. Levi had been planning a
- 54:32murder for months, with searches of how to choose the
- 54:36perfect victim, how to strangle someone, and how to defeat
- 54:40a police interrogation, and they would uncover even more evidence
- 54:43tying Levi directly to the scene. Not only was the
- 54:47watch confirmed to be Levi's, but inside his room they
- 54:50discovered a shirt covered in Sheila's blood and gloves matching
- 54:54the ones from the crime scene. Now, even without a
- 54:58full confession. Detectives know oh, they have enough evidence to
- 55:01formally charge him with this. Both interrogations finally come to
- 55:05an end, and as a detective steps out to inform
- 55:08the parents that one of their young sons is an
- 55:10alleged killer, all they can do is stand in shock,
- 55:13silently waiting to hear their son's fate.
- 55:18Speaker 15: Yeah, this is their doubt.
- 55:24Speaker 18: Especially the ward would be spurou criminal investigation. And we
- 55:27see two of my colleagues here, my other colleague. Now,
- 55:30this is certain thing we're going to tell you that
- 55:32we have that are bad?
- 55:34Speaker 7: Okay?
- 55:36Speaker 21: All right? That watch that we showed you was under
- 55:40her body? What what?
- 55:50Speaker 25: Oh?
- 55:52Speaker 15: Okay, I have more things to tell me.
- 55:54Speaker 25: Okay, I don't know what in the world happened. He's
- 55:59we're not talking him anymore. I mean, he doesn't want
- 56:02to really talk anymore. I don't know what happened.
- 56:11Speaker 20: You're cooking.
- 56:13Speaker 7: Well, we have a lot of other evidence too.
- 56:17Speaker 21: I'm just trying to figure out what the world.
- 56:21Speaker 20: I don't know. No, no, okay, sorry, what else?
- 56:39Speaker 15: I'm not doing this too, I don't think you are.
- 56:42Speaker 21: I'm just trying to do my job. What happens now,
- 56:49I'm consulting because it's a county prosecutor's office.
- 56:52Speaker 28: He's only.
- 56:54Speaker 10: Oh my god, Oh my god, Oh my god.
- 57:00Speaker 7: I know, I know, I know.
- 57:04Speaker 33: Oh no, I feel like overnsel.
- 57:28Speaker 4: After finally learning what their son had done, Levi's family
- 57:32are left to come to terms with a devastating reality
- 57:35with the overwhelming evidence against him. On November tenth, twenty
- 57:39twenty five, Levi Kart ultimately pleads guilty to aggravated murder,
- 57:43aggravated burglary, and strangulation in the killing of Shila Tenpenny,
- 57:47and because of his age, Levi receives the maximum sentence
- 57:51allowed under juvenile law. He will remain in a juvenile
- 57:54facility until he turns twenty one, meaning he is expected
- 57:58to be released in two thousand thirty three. But for
- 58:01Sheila's family, the outcome still doesn't feel like justice. Under
- 58:05juvenile sentencing laws, Levi cannot legally remain incarcerated beyond that age,
- 58:10and at Levi's sentencing, the lead investigator warned the court,
- 58:14telling the judge he made a mistake. It was good
- 58:17luck for us that he did, but in the future
- 58:20is he going to learn from those mistakes? That's what
- 58:22I'm concerned about. For the detectives involved in the investigation,
- 58:26there remains a terrifying possibility that Sheila was not the
- 58:29end of Levi's violence, but only the beginning of what
- 58:33he could be capable of. And while this case left
- 58:36Ohio shaken by a killer no one ever expected, our
- 58:39next case unfolds somewhere danger is never supposed to reach.
- 58:44Inside Saint Vincent North Hospital, more than a dozen gunshots
- 58:48sent patients and doctors into lockdown as swant officers move
- 58:52floor by floor searching for the shooters.
- 59:00Speaker 15: Okay, this way, that way, just going that way.
- 59:05Speaker 4: With one person already dead, more than seventy rooms and
- 59:09a maze of hallways to secure, police are forced into
- 59:12an intense race to stop the gunman before he finds
- 59:15another victim. To watch this exclusive Doctor and Sanity episode,
