- 0:11Today on Living on the Edge with Chip Ingram.
- 0:14Do you find yourself living in fear and anxiety
- 0:17like the world is getting worse and worse all
- 0:19the time? And wonder, God, where are you? Today
- 0:23we'll answer that question. Stay with me. Something
- 0:28changes in you when evil surprises you. The world
- 0:31felt manageable. Then it didn't. In 2 Timothy,
- 0:35Paul was in prison. His young pastor was wavering.
- 0:38The culture was growing darker. And what he gave
- 0:41Timothy wasn't a pep talk, it was a framework,
- 0:44a way of seeing what's happening that changes
- 0:47everything about how you respond to it. I'm Dave
- 0:50Drewy, and today on Living on the Edge, we're
- 0:52continuing our series called You Can Make Disciples.
- 0:55Now open your Bible to 2 Timothy chapter 3, starting
- 0:59in verse 1, as we join Chip Ingram with his message
- 1:02titled, Be Prepared, Don't Be Surprised. And
- 1:06so Paul warns of an increase in wickedness in
- 1:09the... last days, and we'll talk about the last
- 1:11days. Let me just read verses one through about
- 1:17five. But realize this, that in the last days,
- 1:21difficult times will come. That word difficult
- 1:23can also mean dangerous. For people will be lovers
- 1:26of self and lovers of money, boastful, arrogant,
- 1:30slanders, disobedient to parents, ungrateful,
- 1:33unholy, unloving, irreconcilable, malicious gossips,
- 1:36without self -control. brutal, haters of good,
- 1:41treacherous, reckless, conceited, lovers of pleasure
- 1:44rather than the lovers of God, holding to a form
- 1:47of godliness although they've denied its power.
- 1:50Avoid such people as these. So let's ask and
- 1:56answer two questions, and then let's dig in and
- 2:00talk about what are the implications. Question
- 2:02number one should be, are we in the last days,
- 2:05right? When Jesus came and revealed himself as
- 2:12the Son of God and the Messiah and the Savior
- 2:15of the world, biblically speaking, that's when
- 2:17the last days begin. We are in the last days.
- 2:21And so I think when you open this chapter and
- 2:24he says, mark this, Timothy, in the last days,
- 2:27evil things are going to come. And then he starts
- 2:30to lay them out. He's saying, in the last days,
- 2:33beginning now, these are the kind of things you're
- 2:36gonna see. And the inference here is as we get
- 2:39closer and closer, these kind of things will
- 2:42intensify and become more and more the norm instead
- 2:46of the exception. Does that make sense? What
- 2:49Timothy needed to know was the things that he
- 2:51was seeing that was so overwhelming and so wicked
- 2:54were what Jesus said would happen. And now he
- 2:59wants to sort of help him get on the positive
- 3:02side of things. You'll notice. In the next section,
- 3:05I just entitled this, Don't Be Afraid, Keep Pressing
- 3:09Ahead, verses 10 through 17. Verse 10, now you,
- 3:13he's contrasting him with these people that are
- 3:17going down very bad paths. Now you followed my
- 3:21teaching, conduct, purpose, faith, patience,
- 3:28love, perseverance, persecutions, and suffering.
- 3:34Such as happened to me in Antioch, at Iconium,
- 3:37and at Lystra. What persecutions I endured, and
- 3:41out of them all. What's the punchline? The Lord
- 3:47rescued me. I would encourage you to remember
- 3:52past progress. And you start looking back, looking
- 3:57back, looking back, looking back. And you would
- 4:00have a story. that God has rescued you out of
- 4:05things in the past. He's not idle. And by the
- 4:10way, I know I'm a broken record. If you keep
- 4:15watching a lot of news, you will live in fear
- 4:18because the news is made and geared to be sensational.
- 4:23It's to get your attention and to keep you watching.
- 4:27But if you get on and watch your news feeds and
- 4:30you scroll and every time that thing goes off,
- 4:32oh, can you hear it? There's another shooting.
- 4:34And what about this? And what about that? When's
- 4:36the last time someone said, I'd just like to
- 4:39declare that in the last 10 minutes there were
- 4:41about 27 .5 million acts of kindness of people
- 4:45who cared for one another. I got an email from
- 4:48a friend who works in the global south and he
- 4:50gave the statistics of the number of people.
- 4:53In the last two or three years that have come
- 4:55to Christ in the global South, it's more of all
- 4:57the people that have come to Christ in all of
- 4:59church history. You don't get any good news.
- 5:02God's working in amazing ways here and all around
- 5:04the world. There's young people that are on fire
- 5:07for God. They're not all just a bunch of slackers,
- 5:10but you know what? It's not gonna make the news.
- 5:14And we have by and large a church that is living
- 5:18out of fear and perfect love. Casts out fear,
- 5:23according to the Bible. And the second thing,
- 5:27he says, look, persecution is normal. Look at
- 5:32verse 12. Indeed, all who want to live a godly
- 5:36life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted. Contrast,
- 5:39but evil people and imposters will proceed from
- 5:43bad to worse. Deceiving, and here's what to remember,
- 5:48and being deceived. You understand that some
- 5:54of the most terrible things that are happening
- 5:57in our world are happening by people who absolutely
- 6:00believe with all their heart they're bringing
- 6:03good and making things better. And if you don't
- 6:09get that, you'll either think they're stupid,
- 6:12bigoted, anti -intellectual like they think we
- 6:14are, and you'll never get to know them or listen
- 6:18to where they're coming from. But does anybody
- 6:20remember a guy named Saul? Just, you know, remember
- 6:23him? Remember his testimony? He says, God was
- 6:30gracious to me because out of ignorance, Saul
- 6:33was absolutely committed, knew the Bible inside
- 6:37and out, was actually committed to crushing this
- 6:42movement called the way. Christians. Why? To
- 6:47honor God. The most dangerous people in the world
- 6:52are people with religious zeal, believing they're
- 6:55doing what they're doing for God. We had a pastor
- 7:01was with us a couple weeks ago, and this is so
- 7:03fresh. And we heard his testimony. In fact, we
- 7:07got it on film. He's with ISIS and was being
- 7:13trained as an assassin. And he finished his training
- 7:17and got his target and was on his way to finish
- 7:21the job. And he had a, I can't even describe
- 7:25it, he had this intervention moment where God
- 7:28spoke to him. And it's too long a story to tell,
- 7:32but in that moment, he responded to that, which
- 7:35resulted in him coming to Christ. And how many
- 7:38people personally has he led to the Lord? I mean,
- 7:42and it was like 19 ,000 and something. And someone
- 7:45said, well, how do you know? He said, because
- 7:47I was the one who baptized them. Don't be ashamed.
- 7:52Be bold. Be strong. Be strong in what? Be strong
- 7:56in grace. And there's a connection. And the things
- 8:00that you have heard, entrust to faithful men,
- 8:05faithful women. Faithful children, faithful grandchildren,
- 8:08neighbors, friends, people at church. Don't just
- 8:11keep going to meetings. Where do we want to go?
- 8:14Let's be intentional. Let's walk through this
- 8:17together. Let's be difference makers in our little
- 8:21sphere. That's all you have to do. You don't
- 8:23have to be famous. You don't have to be big.
- 8:25You don't have to be smarter. You don't have
- 8:27to be more educated. You just have to be willing.
- 8:29And he's gonna get to the end and he's gonna
- 8:32show you and me how it actually happens. And
- 8:34so he says to Timothy, giving a little more encouragement
- 8:37here, he says, verse 14, you, however, I love
- 8:41that, continue in the things that you have learned
- 8:45and become convinced of knowing from whom you've
- 8:48learned them. And from childhood, you've known
- 8:51the what? Sacred writings, which are able to
- 8:53give you wisdom that leads to salvation through
- 8:56faith. which is in Christ Jesus. And then this
- 8:59classic verse, all scripture is inspired or God
- 9:05-breathed. And it's beneficial for teaching what's
- 9:10true and what's right, for rebuking, correcting
- 9:14when things are wrong, for correction, not only
- 9:17it's wrong, but how to get back on track, and
- 9:21for training in righteousness. how to make it
- 9:24habitually a part of your life. Why? So that
- 9:27the man or woman of God may be fully capable,
- 9:31equipped for every good work. You know, it's
- 9:39powerful. It's powerful. God's word is powerful.
- 9:46We have done some research at Living on the Edge
- 9:49and we... partnered and got some information
- 9:52from the American Bible Society. And you might
- 9:55be shocked, but can I tell you, the average Christian
- 9:57does not read the Bible. It gets worse. We commissioned
- 10:02a study because we were ministering to pastors,
- 10:05all evangelicals, but from about 45 or 50 different
- 10:09backgrounds or denominations. And in our survey,
- 10:12only 21 % of pastors ever opened their Bible
- 10:20except for sermon preparation. The reason we're
- 10:25investing so much in pastors, anemic pastors
- 10:28produce sick sheep. You know what Paul knew?
- 10:35There's a lot of pressure for a pastor like Timothy.
- 10:38There's a lot of pressure for pastors today all
- 10:41over the world and here. There's a lot of pressure
- 10:43for people like you who have a lot on your plate.
- 10:48We'll be right back with more from Chip Ingram

- 11:18I want to tell you a story, and if you identify
- 11:21with it, it was the last church I pastored, and
- 11:25one of my jobs always was, what's the next pipeline
- 11:28for the next elders? And I had a process where
- 11:31they didn't know I was doing this, but I went
- 11:34to the staff and I went to our present elders
- 11:37and just tell me, who are people that are actually
- 11:39leading? They're real leaders in our church.
- 11:41And then I would just call them privately or
- 11:43stop them in the hall and say, hey. I wonder
- 11:46if you'd be willing to kind of meet with me every
- 11:50other week for about three months. I'm just pulling
- 11:52a group of guys together. I've been told that
- 11:55you're one of our leaders. You're doing this
- 11:57and this and these ministries. And, you know,
- 11:59the elders told me, the staff, and I'd just like
- 12:01to get to know you. And if there's any way I
- 12:03could be helping your life, that'd be wonderful.
- 12:05And usually they all said yes. And so I always
- 12:10started it the same way. And I had a... sort
- 12:13of techniques behind why I was doing what I was
- 12:15doing. I told, we'll start at four, we'll be
- 12:18done at 5 .30. And the moment four started, I
- 12:21said, okay, guys, tell you what I'd like to do
- 12:23is whatever's on your heart, I'd like you to
- 12:25first, let's thank God, and then any issues that
- 12:29are going on in your life you'd like to pray
- 12:30about. And they don't know each other. I said,
- 12:32are you ready? And they're looking at me, yeah,
- 12:33let's pray. And I said, you know, rather than,
- 12:35you know, that how everyone prays maybe once
- 12:37and then we move on, I'm gonna set my phone for
- 12:4115 minutes. So you can pray once, twice. You
- 12:45can pray conversationally. It's on the dot, four
- 12:49o 'clock. We start praying. Guess what happens
- 12:52if you're late? You're walking into a room with
- 12:55a bunch of people praying and you go, oh my gosh.
- 12:58And then, you know, the first round of praying
- 12:59is like, oh Lord, you know, normal. And then
- 13:02it gets a little bit more honest, a little bit
- 13:04more honest. And then I have a thing that I take
- 13:06them through and my first question is, just tell
- 13:10me a little bit. Your story, just give me a sense
- 13:12of you, your life, your journey, family, where
- 13:15you work, and they go around and we're getting
- 13:18to know each other. And then I ask this question,
- 13:20tell me your relationship with God's word. What?
- 13:23Yeah, tell me your relationship with God's word.
- 13:27Because according to Jesus in the parable of
- 13:29the soils, your relationship to the word reveals
- 13:33and determines your relationship with the Lord.
- 13:36No exceptions. The parable of the soils was the
- 13:40kingdom, the secrets and mysteries of the kingdom.
- 13:43And God's truth goes forth and it lands on four
- 13:46kinds of hearts and there's four different responses.
- 13:48Only one produces fruit. But if there's no even
- 13:51truth going in. And so, I mean, these are leaders.
- 13:54So the first one is a doctor. He says, well,
- 13:57I pulls out his phone. He goes, my life's really
- 14:01busy and I got three kids and the practice is
- 14:03really heavy. And so I open you version and I
- 14:06read the verse of the day. That's it. I mean,
- 14:10I had to sort of, you know, I don't want to be
- 14:12judgmental. So it's like, you know, very calm.
- 14:15Oh, okay. And I try and think about that verse.
- 14:19Okay, great. Next. You know, I'm really running
- 14:23a really big company and it's really important.
- 14:27I usually leave a little bit before six and I
- 14:28work out. And sometimes, you know, I try to listen
- 14:32a little bit to the Bible maybe when I'm a thing,
- 14:34but I'm not very disciplined at that. But, I
- 14:37mean, it's the Silicon Valley, man. You can't
- 14:39imagine the pressure. And then I get home about
- 14:418 .30, and I try to at least tuck my kids in
- 14:44bed. Okay, next. You know, I don't know exactly
- 14:50why you asked me, but I'm not only not reading
- 14:53the Bible, my marriage is in trouble, and I'm
- 14:55not sure it's going to make it. And so he talks
- 14:57for a while. Next. And so we got near the end
- 15:03of that one and they know me and I knew of them,
- 15:06so they know I'm very direct. And so I'd ask
- 15:08them a question about your dreams and your future
- 15:10and your kids and et cetera like this. And I
- 15:13said, as calmly as I could, I said, men, it's
- 15:16a real privilege and I appreciate what you're
- 15:18doing and serving in the church. I wanna make
- 15:20a comment and this is gonna be very, very important
- 15:22because I talk a different way with people out
- 15:25like this than I do with leaders. I said, I want
- 15:27to, each one of you to know that the dreams and
- 15:31the hopes that you shared, your current trajectory,
- 15:34I will tell you for certain, they will not happen
- 15:37in your life. And you will have heartache and
- 15:39pain and family breakup and a life that is not
- 15:42what you expect. And I can guarantee that because
- 15:46none of you are in the scriptures. I came home
- 15:50and I said, Teresa, I'm shutting the group down.
- 15:53I'm not going back. And she said, why? I said,
- 15:57these are our leaders. I'm the pastor of the
- 16:00church. I actually know who's teaching most of
- 16:02the time. And this is what we're producing? There
- 16:06is no life too busy. Man can't live by bread
- 16:09alone, but only by the word of God. The word
- 16:12of God is living and active and sharper than
- 16:14a two -edged sword and pierces to the division
- 16:16of soul and spirit and joint and marrow and reveals
- 16:20the thoughts and intentions of the heart. Thy
- 16:23word was found and I ate and it came for me,
- 16:25the joy and the delight of my soul. All scripture
- 16:28is inspired by God and is profitable for. It's
- 16:32the equipper. It's the changer. It's the power.
- 16:35God takes the written word, makes it the living
- 16:37word, develops convictions and transforms your
- 16:40life. It's the renewing of your mind. And so
- 16:44I thought it was pretty tough on him. And Teresa
- 16:46said, don't stop the group, Chip. You're just
- 16:48emotional. I said, you're right. So I went back,
- 16:51and I'm thinking, this is going to get better.
- 16:53I mean, I hit him pretty hard. But my deal is,
- 16:57if you're a leader, if you can't take it and
- 16:59hit hard, go do something else. Man, this is
- 17:02the kingdom of God. These are people's souls.
- 17:05We're not trying to run a company. We're not
- 17:07trying to go public. This is forever stuff. Take
- 17:10this seriously. So, you know, they all got together,
- 17:14and we had good fellowship. By the way, they
- 17:16were all great guys and all had great leaderships.
- 17:19Guys, you know, before we get started, you know,
- 17:21we had our prayer time. Could you share with
- 17:24me your relationship with the Word of God? And
- 17:29I said, we're going to learn to get into the
- 17:34Bible together in a way that you can understand
- 17:37it and practice it. And I had a couple resources
- 17:40that I felt have always helped me, and I got
- 17:44those guys together. And the one guy, and I say
- 17:48this because I mean, he got in the Bible and
- 17:51God spoke to him. Pretty soon his wife's coming
- 17:55to me, goes, what did you do? I said, it's not
- 17:58me. I got a new husband. I mean, he comes home.
- 18:02We eat as a family. In fact, okay, you got to
- 18:06get this sort of over top. He's having a Bible
- 18:09study. He and these other men at nine o 'clock,
- 18:12five nights a week. Thinking that might be a
- 18:15little over the top. The guy that used to get
- 18:19up and work out started to get into God's word.
- 18:25About six weeks later, he said, you know, it's
- 18:29an amazing thing to eat dinner with your family.
- 18:32I'm tucking my kids in bed. The friction of my
- 18:37marriage is gone. The guy whose marriage was
- 18:40falling apart really struggled, and these guys
- 18:44got around him. He goes, well, he was a... football
- 18:47star and finally said, you know, are you willing
- 18:50to put in to be the man of God that you did to
- 18:53become the football star and play in these pro
- 18:56leagues? And then he did. That guy is the boldest
- 19:01Christian I think I know. Mark my word, we are
- 19:04in the last days and all those things that you
- 19:08read in there are going to happen more and more
- 19:10and more. And there's going to be a group of
- 19:13people that will live by faith. And faith comes
- 19:16by hearing and hearing by the word of God. And
- 19:20they're going to be promise -centered people
- 19:22that God's going to use to do the greatest things
- 19:25that have ever happened on the face of the earth.
- 19:28Or they'll be problem -centered people that will
- 19:31live in fear. and anxiety, and they'll find some
- 19:35group to blame or some other person, and they'll
- 19:38sit around whining in coffee shops talking about
- 19:41how terrible everything is and who's wrong and
- 19:44who's bad instead of being an instrument of righteousness
- 19:48equipped for every good work. So what I want
- 19:52you to know is that persecution is normal. Buckle
- 19:55your chin strap. Understand this is what happens
- 19:58to warriors for Jesus in the midst of a fallen
- 20:01world. The world has changed. It's not coming
- 20:04back. The morality of the America that you know
- 20:08is not coming back. Wow, strangers in exile.
- 20:13Oh my gosh, it almost sounds biblical. So live
- 20:20in such a way, in such harmony. Never give evil
- 20:26for evil, but give good for evil, right? 1 Peter
- 20:303. In order that the Lord might bless you and
- 20:34prosper you and have the kind of life that men
- 20:39and women would ask you in this corrupt world
- 20:43about the hope that's in you. And you could respond
- 20:46with reverence and grace and kindness about Jesus.
- 20:53And that's what Paul's telling them. And I don't
- 20:56know about you, but I think we're living in a
- 20:58day that is more and more parallel. to that day
- 21:01than it was the last century. And so what we
- 21:05got to do is we got to, you know, we got to delete
- 21:08the old software. We need to delete the old expectations.
- 21:12We need to just get in the computer of our mind
- 21:14and it ought to be this way and this and this
- 21:16and that and delete and delete. And we need to
- 21:17reprogram. Power is God's word. It's a very evil
- 21:22world. God is going to equip me. God's going
- 21:24to protect me. He wants to use me right where
- 21:27I am. in my network, with my family, and I'm
- 21:31going to sow righteousness, because if you sow
- 21:34to the flesh, corruption. When you sow to the
- 21:37Spirit, righteousness, life, grace. You're listening
- 21:45to Living on the Edge with Chip Ingram, and a
- 21:48message titled, Be Prepared, Don't Be Surprised.
- 21:51We're nearing the end of a study called, You
- 21:53Can Make Disciples, and there's more from Chip
- 21:55coming up in a moment. Missed any part of this

- 22:07the Chip Ingram Sermon Podcast has every sermon
- 22:10in full wherever you listen. Chip's story about
- 22:14those church leaders and their relationship with
- 22:16God's Word is the kind of thing that's hard to
- 22:18shake. The antidote Paul gives in 2 Timothy isn't
- 22:21complicated. It's the Word doing what only the
- 22:24Word can do. Chip's book, Yes, You Really Can
- 22:28Change, gives you the clear breakdown of how
- 22:30Scripture actually reshapes a life, not behavior
- 22:34management, but the real thing. And because this
- 22:36series is all about discipleship, every purchase
- 22:39comes with an extra copy to hand to someone you
- 22:42know, someone to share it with. We want to equip
- 22:45you to invest in the people around you. Just
- 22:47go to livingontheedge .org and look for the book,
- 22:52Yes, You Really Can Change. Everything you hear
- 22:56on this program is made possible by the faithful
- 22:58support of listeners. If this ministry has been
- 23:01a voice of truth in your life, we'd be grateful
- 23:03for your partnership. Give at livingontheedge

- 23:15Box 3007, Atlanta, Georgia, 30024. Well, now
- 23:20here's Chip with some closing thoughts. Thanks,
- 23:23Dave. As we close today's program, could I encourage
- 23:26you to get your Bible and read 2 Timothy 3. I
- 23:31mean, read it very, very quickly. And you'll
- 23:33read 20 different things that the Apostle Paul
- 23:35will say. Don't be surprised. We are living in
- 23:38the last days now. In fact, the last days started
- 23:41when Jesus came. And then notice at the very
- 23:43end of the chapter, the antidote to all the things
- 23:47that are happening for you as a follower of Jesus
- 23:49Christ is the power of God's Word. that's breathed
- 23:54out, that is profitable for teaching, training,
- 23:57redirecting your life, and empowering you to
- 24:00do all that God wants you to do. Here's my question
- 24:03for you today. What is your relationship with
- 24:06the Word of God? Is it precious? Are you in it
- 24:10daily? Are you listening to it? Are you reading
- 24:13it? And most importantly, when God prompts through
- 24:16His Word, do you obey it? If you will obey quickly,
- 24:20you will begin to experience God in a new and
- 24:23powerful way. The world certainly is a challenge,
- 24:26but God has given us all we need through His
- 24:29Word and His people to live it out faithfully.
- 24:32Keep pressing ahead. Don't get discouraged. I'm
- 24:36your host, Dave Drewy. The Apostle Paul's final
- 24:38charge to Timothy is one of the most direct passages
- 24:41in Scripture. Next time, Chip Ingram opens 2
- 24:44Timothy 4 and asks, What does it actually cost
- 24:47to stay faithful? Don't miss it here on Living
- 24:51on the Edge. Today's program is produced and
- 24:56sponsored by Living on the Edge.
