• 0:18
Hello superhero fans, comic geeks, and everyone else.
• 0:22
I am Megan from Vigilante Vibes and I am here to give you
• 0:26
another character breakdown but this time I am going to be
• 0:29
  focusing on Hellion really quick.
• 0:32
If you are into these character breakdowns be sure to like and
• 0:34
subscribe so you don't miss anymore because I have so many
• 0:38
and right now I am putting all my focus on 2 mutants.
• 0:42
The X-Men are my life and the mutants they sing to my soul.
• 0:46
This one might not though. Julian Keller AKA Hellion was
• 0:50
created by Nunzio Defilippus and Christina Ware and 1st appeared
• 0:56
in New Mutants volume to Issue 2 in 2003.
• 1:01
Hellion is a powerful telekinetic mutant.
• 1:04
He started out as a student at the Xavier Institute where he
• 1:07
led the Hellion Squad and was one of Emma Frost's top student.
• 1:11
He actually originally was an advisee of North Star, but his
• 1:16
constant punishments caused him to switch advisors to Emma
• 1:20
Frost, who saw in him great potential for heroism and as
• 1:25
well as frightening deposition for personal gain and villainy,
• 1:29
which we all love. After joining the New X-Men, he
• 1:33
fought in a ton of battles for mutant kind.
• 1:35
During the Second coming storyline, he lost both of his
• 1:38
hands in the fight to protect San Francisco.
• 1:42
These days he's taken on the names of Cohen and has become a
• 1:46
hardcore pro mutant activist. Some might even call him an
• 1:50
extremist. Some might, some should call him
• 1:54
an extremist. That's the short version.
• 1:57
If you stick around, I can give you a much longer version
• 2:01
because it he's an interesting character.
• 2:04
So diving right in. Julian Keller was born in Los
• 2:08
Angeles to super rich parents William and Elizabeth Keller,
• 2:12
and grew up living the spoiled life.
• 2:14
On his 12th birthday, his parents dropped $10,000 on
• 2:18
gifts, and that's when his mutant telekinetic powers first
• 2:21
kicked in. Hoping he'd learn to suppress
• 2:24
his abilities and blend in with humans, they sent him to the
• 2:26
Xavier Institute. But Julian had other plans.
• 2:31
He fully embraced being a mutant and trained hard to master his
• 2:34
powers with help from Professor X and the X-Men.
• 2:38
Hellion is a crazy powerful telekinetic who can move objects
• 2:42
with his mind and potentially even mess with the matter at the
• 2:46
molecular level. He can fly, throw out force
• 2:50
  blasts, and create protective Shields.
• 2:54
At one point, Emma Frost temporarily unlocked the full
• 2:56
potential in his brain and Julian was able to fly at
• 2:59
superhuman speed across a huge distance, but it wiped him out
• 3:03
so badly that he had to sleep for days to recover.
• 3:06
After losing both of his hands in a brutal fight with a Nimrod
• 3:10
Sentinel, Julian had a hard time adjusting.
• 3:13
But after a reality shift caused by Legion.
• 3:16
David Holler. If you want to see that
• 3:19
character breakdown just look in my channel.
• 3:23
He started showing impressive control over his powers and
• 3:26
using them to move and control a pair of artificial hands, though
• 3:30
where they came from is still a mystery.
• 3:33
Over the years Hellion has fought against some major
• 3:36
threats alongside his Hellion Squad like William Stryker's
• 3:40
Anti Mutant Purifiers, more Nimrod Sentinels, even surviving
• 3:44
infection from a version of the Legacy Virus thanks to Le Pair
• 3:49
Queen and Bastion back at Xavier Institute.
• 3:54
Julian's cocky attitude and rule breaking didn't exactly win him
• 3:57
a lot of friends. Early on.
• 3:59
He clashed hard with students like Prodigy and constantly
• 4:02
butted heads with his advisor North Star.
• 4:05
But despite all that, his natural charisma made him the
• 4:08
center of a close knit group of friends including Rockslide,
• 4:11
Tag, and Mercury. Julian joined the Hellions
• 4:16
Training squad and had an ongoing rivalry with the new
• 4:19
Mutant squad. He also had a short lived
• 4:22
romance with Sofia Mantega who's Wind Dancer one of the New
• 4:27
Mutants Co leaders. After Emma Frost disbanded the
• 4:31
squads she formed a new X-Men and training team.
• 4:35
Julian made the cut though not as team leader which definitely
• 4:39
bruised his ego. Julian Keller, AKA Hellion, had
• 4:45
quite a bit of a rocky star in the Xavier Institute.
• 4:48
Despite some concerns about his temper and attitude, he switched
• 4:51
mentors to Emma Frost, who saw something in him, and his close
• 4:55
friends followed. When the student body was split
• 4:57
into training squads, he was made leader of the Hellions
• 5:00
while Sophia led the rival New Mutants.
• 5:04
The rivalry got very intense very quickly, especially during
• 5:08
their first competitive games. Hellion Squad won, but he kept
• 5:11
flirting with Sophia the entire time.
• 5:15
Things got messier when Kevin Ford, who is Wither, was
• 5:19
arrested for accidentally killing his father.
• 5:21
Julian thought it was unfair and tried to bust him out, with most
• 5:25
of the Hellions backing him up until the New Mutants stopped
• 5:28
  them. Wither was eventually cleared
• 5:32
and tensions cooled a bit after both squads helped a ghost
• 5:35
student find peace. Wind Dancer turned down Julian
• 5:39
for the school dance, so he brought the Stepford Cuckoos
• 5:44
instead. But he and Sophia did share a
• 5:46
dance, and he invited her to spend the summer in California
• 5:50
with the Hellions. She declined, but not before
• 5:53
kissing him goodbye. The Hellions won the big year
• 5:57
end training competition and Julian was named most likely to
• 6:01
be an X-Men. But his summer trip took a turn.
• 6:05
Airport drama led him to call his family's lawyer and that
• 6:09
embarrassed his parents so much that they disinherited him.
• 6:12
Digging into their secrets, Julian found out about a shady
• 6:15
deal with the Kingmaker, who granted the Hellions favors in
• 6:19
exchange for future debts. For Julian, that meant hero fame
• 6:24
until they were told to steal a bio weapon for Doc Ock.
• 6:29
The team refused and turned against Kingmaker who retaliated
• 6:34
by trashing Julian's reputation. After M Day when most mutants
• 6:39
lost their powers, Wind Dancer was one of them and that hit
• 6:43
Julian very hard. Laura Kenny X-23 AKA Wolverine
• 6:48
showed up and was clearly into him but he kept pushing her
• 6:51
away. Emma Frost broke up the squads
• 6:54
and made the students fight in a battle Royale to see who would
• 6:57
be trained as an X-Men. Hellion made the cut, but not as
• 7:02
leader. Things got worse when the
• 7:05
Purifiers attacked, killing 45 students, including Julian's
• 7:08
best friend Tag. Wind Dancer also left without
• 7:12
saying goodbye, which left Julian feeling even more alone.
• 7:16
Julian later teamed up with Laura to save Mercury from her
• 7:19
old facility captors, and despite some tension, they
• 7:22
started growing closer. He even forced her to show mercy
• 7:26
to his to her enemies. When Limbo's demonic ruler
• 7:29
Belasco kidnapped students and X-Men, Julian went to Germany to
• 7:34
look for help and ended up confiding in dust about how lost
• 7:39
he felt since M Day. During a mission to protect the
• 7:42
1st post M Day mutant baby lady Death Strike nearly killed him.
• 7:47
He survived thanks to Beast and Prodigy, but woke up to find the
• 7:51
school closed, the X-Men gone, and his parents moved without a
• 7:54
  word. Feeling abandoned, he briefly
• 7:58
tried to join Magneto, but Magneto saw right through him
• 8:02
and turned him down. Julian relocated San Francisco
• 8:06
when the X-Men offered sanctuary there, though it's unclear if he
• 8:10
kept up with his studies. He was later kidnapped and
• 8:14
infected with a version of the Legacy Virus by the Leopard
• 8:17
Queen, but Elixir cured him just in time.
• 8:20
Julian saved the day by redirecting a massive energy
• 8:23
blast from Surge during the chaos.
• 8:27
As tensions around Proposition X rose, Julian got more radical,
• 8:33
leading protests and even starting riots.
• 8:35
He and other mutants were arrested by Norman Osborne's
• 8:38
mutant police force, but freed after Osborne's defeat.
• 8:42
Julian helped defend San Francisco from a Nimrod Sentinel
• 8:46
attack, but it cost him he lost both his hands.
• 8:50
That loss made Julian even more angry and isolated.
• 8:53
When the X-Men gave him cyberkinetic hands, he rejected
• 8:56
them, furious that they couldn't just regrow his real ones.
• 9:00
He was sent to help rebuild the city where he displayed subtle
• 9:04
and advanced use of his powers, phasing Sentinel Blast through
• 9:08
people to keep them safe. But when Omega Sentinels
• 9:13
programming took over and she attacked, Hellion almost killed
• 9:17
her out of rage, leaving her in a brain dead state.
• 9:22
Cyclops put him on probation for the excessive force threatening
• 9:26
expulsion. Hellion did not care, he stayed
• 9:29
away and insisted he didn't need the X-Men.
• 9:34
After a reality shift triggered by one of Legion's
• 9:36
personalities, Julian returned with his telekinetic control
• 9:40
back in full, and he now had new mechanical hands that he could
• 9:44
move with pinpoint accuracy. When the X-Men split during
• 9:48
schism, he sided with Wolverine and joined the Jean Grey School.
• 9:52
  There. He briefly reconnected with
• 9:53
X-23, but after a mission where he kissed her and she rejected
• 9:58
him, he accused her of being emotionally cold, which didn't
• 10:01
exactly help things. At school, Julian became part of
• 10:05
the Special class alongside other oddball mutants like
• 10:08
Rockslide, No Girl, I Boy, and Shark Girl, who he eventually
• 10:13
started dating. During the Tarragon Mist Crisis,
• 10:16
when the Inhuman Cloud was poisoning mutants, he got
• 10:19
infected with Mpox. Not able to find the X-Men, he
• 10:23
went to New Adeline and nearly caused major destruction when he
• 10:28
lost control of his powers. Synapse disabled his powers
• 10:32
  temporarily and Julian apologized.
• 10:34
He hadn't meant to hurt anyone. He recovered in New Adeline and
• 10:38
worked off his debt by volunteering.
• 10:41
When Krakoa was founded as the mutant nation, Hellion became a
• 10:46
citizen reunited with the Hellion Squad.
• 10:49
While he's mellowed out a bit, he's still a hot head at heart,
• 10:52
just with better aim. But now that Krakoa is done, he
• 10:56
is out causing chaos as usual, and Miss Marvel is the one that
• 11:02
has had to deal with it. That was in the new Nyx that was
• 11:06
discontinued at issue 10. It was still a good one though.
• 11:09
It's a good run. So like always, I have some
• 11:13
comics that I think you should check out so you could get to
• 11:17
know Helian even more. And if I missed any, please let
• 11:19
