- 0:00Okay.
- 0:01I've been talking a lot recently about how this is our 10th year of homeschooling.
- 0:06And I've been sharing for six years here on this channel.
- 0:11And I just think it's a really, really good time to pause all of the back
- 0:16to school content.
- 0:17All of the here's the pieces before we get to the first day.
- 0:21Before I get to sharing our first day, I think it's really important
- 0:24that I share what I think actually matters.
- 0:28Now that we do have ten years, ten years of homeschooling under our belts.
- 0:32So this video is going to be
- 0:36all about what actually matters in homeschool.
- 0:39And I can say this because I'm entering my 10th year of homeschooling.
- 0:42I've got the experience to back it up and this is my list, okay?
- 0:46This is what actually matters after ten years of homeschooling.
- 0:50Welcome back to Making Everyday Magic. My name is Shanna.
- 0:52If you are new here, we are a home schooling family of four
- 0:54and we are entering our 10th year of homeschooling in.
- 0:56Today we are going to talk about what actually matters.
- 0:59As a homeschooler of ten years, two kids.
- 1:03Let's go!
- 1:08Before we go any further, please scroll down and hit the big red subscribe button.
- 1:11Turn on the bell for notifications and give this video a thumbs up.
- 1:14As always, you can find me right on down in the comments for over an Instagram
- 1:17at Making Everyday Magic, I need you to add to my list, okay?
- 1:21Because a lot of us have a lot of experience doing this,
- 1:24and sometimes you don't even need a lot of experience
- 1:25you have in a ha moment in your first day, and it is worth sharing.
- 1:29So build our list.
- 1:30What actually matters in homeschool?
- 1:32Okay, because people think it's a lot of things that don't really matter.
- 1:35Socialization doesn't really matter because if you're doing a good job
- 1:39as a homeschooler, you are out and you are social.
- 1:42Expensive curriculum doesn't matter.
- 1:44But here's my list. Okay, so don't let me get ahead of myself.
- 1:46Let me know what you think
- 1:48actually matters or something that you thought would matter.
- 1:50That doesn't matter, because that's what I want to know.
- 1:53These are in no particular order.
- 1:54So don't I think there's like 11 of them.
- 1:55There's not even like a specific number.
- 1:58Number one, I why did I do that?
- 2:00The first thing that I want to share is that learning styles really do matter.
- 2:05Okay.
- 2:05I really think that if you can play into the style in which your child learns
- 2:09or the things that they enjoy, or play it the way they want it to go,
- 2:14find a way to teach best to your learning style.
- 2:18Those are the things that matter, so it matters.
- 2:20My kids love love learning things from videos,
- 2:24and so when I can, I'm going to do that because it works well for them
- 2:27and they enjoy it and and learning things from games.
- 2:30I'm never going to have my kids sit down and do a literature based curriculum,
- 2:33because that's not going to serve them.
- 2:34That's not something they would enjoy,
- 2:36and we wouldn't make progress because that's not their style.
- 2:39And learning styles really matter. Okay,
- 2:43if it is
- 2:44free or if it is low cost, that does not mean it's bad.
- 2:48It really doesn't mean it's bad.
- 2:50Khan Academy is meaning and it's great.
- 2:52Open education resources also really great core knowledge.
- 2:58Amazing.
- 2:59Just because it is free or low cost does not mean it's bad.
- 3:02It doesn't mean it's not valuable.
- 3:04It doesn't mean it's not good.
- 3:05It doesn't mean that you should look down on it, because you could instead
- 3:09spend $200 on this math program.
- 3:11That doesn't make it better. It really, really doesn't.
- 3:14So don't discount something just because it's free or low cost.
- 3:17Something that is so important. Guys,
- 3:19after ten years, something to remember every single time, every single day.
- 3:22No two homeschools are alike, so it doesn't.
- 3:24I can stand here all day long and tell you what works for us
- 3:26and how it is the best thing that has ever happened to us.
- 3:29But guess what?
- 3:30That doesn't mean diddly squat to you.
- 3:32Other than maybe hearing about the thing and doing your own research,
- 3:34that doesn't mean it's going to serve you,
- 3:35and it doesn't mean it's going to serve anybody else.
- 3:38I come here and I share what I'm doing to hopefully help
- 3:42you feel like you've found a fellow voice out in the homeschool world.
- 3:46It is by no means to ever tell you what you should or shouldn't do,
- 3:48because I just don't think it's going to serve everybody.
- 3:50This works for me.
- 3:52Adapted things, things like that.
- 3:53That works really, really well for me and for my homeschool.
- 3:57Because no two homeschools look alike.
- 3:59I'm going to say it again co-ops are overrated.
- 4:01We put so much energy into trying to socialize as homeschoolers that we forget.
- 4:07And again, this is a hill I will die on.
- 4:09This is a really big deal to me.
- 4:10I am convinced that your kids find their friends, their friend group
- 4:14through common interests, not through forced associations
- 4:16the same thing as public school. And that is not socialization.
- 4:19I have a lot of feelings on it and a lot of videos here,
- 4:21so if you want to circle back and go through any of those,
- 4:23feel free to search it up right here on this channel.
- 4:25But co-ops are overrated.
- 4:27Can they serve you? Absolutely. Can they be perfect? Yes. Wonderful.
- 4:30Can they do great things?
- 4:31Absolutely. Is group landing important? Sure.
- 4:33But co-ops are overrated.
- 4:34Okay. We put so much energy and investment in that.
- 4:36No, they should not have the power to make or break your homeschool
- 4:39or your vibes or your.
- 4:40No, no. Co-ops are overrated.
- 4:43Listen to me.
- 4:44Listen to me is the point.
- 4:46This is the point with like, at some point, it's like the same point.
- 4:49Consistency is your top priority. Why?
- 4:53Why is consistency?
- 4:54Because I don't care what you're learning to do.
- 4:57You got to do it.
- 4:58And if you're not going to do it, the best thing.
- 5:00It just doesn't matter.
- 5:02Consistency is the most important thing for consistency.
- 5:05Consistency. Consistency. Consistency.
- 5:07How do we stay consistent?
- 5:08We make enjoyable and fun.
- 5:09Okay, so if it is like a 50 step process to get the first thing done
- 5:13every day, you're not going to be consistent.
- 5:15That's untenable.
- 5:16It is not possible for you to maintain.
- 5:18So the way that you get consistent is by making things fun,
- 5:23by making things enjoyable.
- 5:24Am I making things palatable?
- 5:25By making things possible? Okay.
- 5:28But consistency is your top priority.
- 5:30How you get to consistent.
- 5:32That is what you need to be focusing on. Okay.
- 5:34How you get to consistent.
- 5:36Because consistency is your top priority. And
- 5:41trust me okay it is.
- 5:43Every single curriculum piece is customizable.
- 5:45How do I know that?
- 5:46Because I
- 5:47have customized every single curriculum that has ever come into this house.
- 5:51I am a huge fan of you paid for it.
- 5:54You bought it. Maybe that is yours. You do with it what you want to.
- 5:57And there are many things like the Michael Thompson program that we use.
- 6:00It is like 15 books every level.
- 6:03So many.
- 6:04But if you actually read the instructor section
- 6:06at the beginning thing, before you start,
- 6:08it tells you, please don't do all this is too much, this too much.
- 6:11Do not do all of this.
- 6:13What they want you to do is they want to give you.
- 6:15And every good curriculum company should give you
- 6:17ten options of things that you need, but only reasonably expect you to use 3 to 5.
- 6:22Like, I mean, come on. Yes, I want you. I'm paying for it.
- 6:24I'm paying good money.
- 6:25I want you to give me every possible thing that you think
- 6:27could possibly benefit me, but I do not want you to expect me to do any of that.
- 6:32Okay.
- 6:32So every single curriculum piece is customizable.
- 6:35You just haven't figured out how yet or how it's going to best serve you.
- 6:38But every single piece is customizable.
- 6:40I promise, every single one.
- 6:44Everyone I know, somebody out there is like, no.
- 6:46Yes it is that one, two, that one.
- 6:48You're thinking about this.
- 6:48Not yes, that one too, especially.
- 6:51Okay, let me know down below. I'll help you if you need it.
- 6:53I have said it before and I will say it again.
- 6:55Homeschool is for everyone, but not everyone is for homeschool.
- 6:59Okay? You can find a way, you can find a plan.
- 7:02You can find a path to allow you to homeschool,
- 7:06to make homeschool work for you. Absolutely.
- 7:09But not everyone is willing or able to do what needs to be done to get there.
- 7:14So homeschooling 100% is for everyone and every situation.
- 7:18However, not everyone is for homeschool and that's okay.
- 7:23This isn't for everybody, and I get that.
- 7:26I really, really do.
- 7:28There is nothing more sound to me though,
- 7:30when people talk about how it just doesn't work.
- 7:32It does, but not everybody
- 7:35is meant to homeschool and I think that that is okay.
- 7:38It really, really is.
- 7:40We've had friends start and stop or go into school or come out of school
- 7:44and guess what?
- 7:45That is such a wonderful thing to do.
- 7:49Find what works for you and do it.
- 7:52And if it doesn't work for you, don't.
- 7:54But I do think there's a way that every single person who truly wants
- 7:58it and is willing to work for it can find success in homeschooling.
- 8:00I really do believe that this is another one, guys,
- 8:05and this is about improper unschooling
- 8:08and people who just kind of do it wrong, and I have big feelings about it.
- 8:11You guys know, we've talked about it a lot.
- 8:13There are tons of ways to learn.
- 8:15There are tons of ways to learn.
- 8:17You can learn games, video games, reading,
- 8:20doing videos, fractions and baking.
- 8:23You can do all kinds of things.
- 8:25There are tons of ways to learn, but
- 8:29but every single one takes effort.
- 8:32And if you think that something like unschooling
- 8:35is just releasing them into the wild, and you think that all learning
- 8:39is just going to inherently happen, it's not okay.
- 8:42Yes, there are kids who teach them selves to read.
- 8:44That's great,
- 8:44but they are like such a small amount that never should you be relying on that.
- 8:49Okay.
- 8:50And if anything, unschooling is more work.
- 8:53If you're doing things well and you're doing things right,
- 8:57tons of ways to learn and they all take effort, okay.
- 9:02They all take work on your part. If you think
- 9:06if you pull your kids out of
- 9:07school, you're using a K through 12 online program, whatever, whatever.
- 9:11And you stick them in front of the screen and then you never check back in.
- 9:15Nope.
- 9:17Tons of ways to learn.
- 9:18And they all take effort. They all take effort on your part.
- 9:20Every single one of them takes effort on your part.
- 9:23I have big dealings about this.
- 9:25Okay.
- 9:25Something that has definitely been made more prominent.
- 9:28The older that my oldest kid gets.
- 9:31Traditional college is absolutely an option.
- 9:33It's on the table and it's an easy or path than you would think it
- 9:38to be to go from homeschooling to the traditional college route.
- 9:42It is not off the table.
- 9:44My kids will go to college if that's the path they choose.
- 9:47Like, it is this wild notion that is impossible
- 9:50that mainstream schools aren't going to like it.
- 9:52I mean, we we know friends who go to Texas A&M who have been homeschool.
- 9:56I mean, it's no, it's like it's great, it's heaven.
- 10:00But there's, you know, people think that you can't, but you can, okay.
- 10:06There is nothing
- 10:09that compares to the freedom that you have when you homeschool.
- 10:13Because one of the reasons it is so incredibly efficient.
- 10:17Okay.
- 10:17So we can have our entire school day done in 2 or 3 hours
- 10:20and have the rest of the day for piano lessons and Girl Scouts and art classes
- 10:25and all of the other million and ten things that my kids want to do.
- 10:27Not to mention there is no homework.
- 10:29It is the freedom vacations when we want to.
- 10:32All of the things that we want to do in life are possible because of this
- 10:36wild amount of freedom that we have, which is glorious.
- 10:39Which is why it's hard to stay consistent.
- 10:41But it is glorious because it is so much freedom and it is so incredibly efficient.
- 10:48So we're not replicating a school day. We're not doing this for eight hours.
- 10:50We're getting in.
- 10:51We're doing what we need to and get out, and then we're going to do fun stuff.
- 10:54And I think that's amazing.
- 10:55So freedom and efficiency.
- 10:57Jessica's wonderful.
- 10:58And probably the biggest lesson that I have learned,
- 11:02because I have made the mistake myself and I have seen other people
- 11:05make this mistake.
- 11:07It is so important, after ten years of homeschooling
- 11:10that you remember home first, homeschool home first.
- 11:16So first and foremost, my kids need to be in a good space
- 11:21and our home or schooling isn't going to be able to happen.
- 11:23It's just not.
- 11:24I need to remember that first and foremost, I am mom before I am teacher,
- 11:29and so sometimes that means making the hard choices of
- 11:33changing your educational path because your kids need to go somewhere else
- 11:37and you need to not be teacher.
- 11:38And that's okay because your mom mom is your job or dad.
- 11:43But first and foremost, home.
- 11:45Okay, home is your main priority when you are homeschooling your children.
- 11:50Okay? And I'm not saying that you sacrifice their schooling.
- 11:53I mean, that's not what I'm saying. Don't.
- 11:55Somebody is going to be like, how can you find anybody?
- 11:57That's the wrong message.
- 11:59That's not what I'm saying.
- 12:00Okay. Here.
- 12:01What I'm saying, what I'm intending to say.
- 12:04Home.
- 12:06Your relationship with
- 12:07your child is first and foremost about your home.
- 12:11Okay.
- 12:12Parent relationship before teacher relationship.
- 12:15Got it?
- 12:16You got it.
- 12:17Somebody's going to yell at me. Somebody's always going to freaking yell at me.
- 12:20You understand what I'm saying?
- 12:21If you don't, maybe,
- 12:23you know, just bite your tongue and assume that other people do, okay?
- 12:27Just. Okay,
- 12:29guys, I hope that you found any of this helpful, entertaining, informative.
- 12:32If you did, please scroll down.

- 12:41Let me know what would you add to my list?
- 12:43Some of you've been doing this longer than me.
- 12:45Some of you haven't been doing it as well.
- 12:46What would you have done? My list or which one are you like?
- 12:48Oh, what a crazy idea! I love it.
- 12:51I would gladly accept that too by sharing.
- 12:55Sharing is caring and together we can keep making everyday magic by.
