- 0:00[SPEAKER_01]: When we create space, we create room for confidence.
- 0:05[SPEAKER_01]: So if you are on a sprint, you're sprinting, you can only see what's in front of you, but when you slow down, you can actually take in what's in front of you and to the side of you.
- 0:15[SPEAKER_02]: Welcome to the Beat Till You See at Podcast, where we talk about taking messy action, knowing that perfect is boring.
- 0:22[SPEAKER_02]: I'm also Logan, Ply's instructor, and fit this business coach.
- 0:26[SPEAKER_02]: I've trained thousands of people around the world, and the number one thing I see stopping people from achieving anything is self-doubt.
- 0:34[SPEAKER_02]: My friends, action brings clarity.
- 0:38[SPEAKER_02]: And it's the antidote to fear.
- 0:40[SPEAKER_02]: Each week, my guests will bring bold, executable, intrinsic, and targeted steps that you can use to put yourself first and be it till you see it.
- 0:50[SPEAKER_02]: It's a practice, not a perfect, let's get started.
- 0:58[SPEAKER_01]: Alright, my be at Bay of My High Cheering Women, my recovering perfectionist and overachievers.
- 1:03[SPEAKER_01]: Hi, how are you?
- 1:03[SPEAKER_01]: Welcome back to the show.
- 1:04[SPEAKER_01]: It's episode two and our slowing down series if you missed episode one, you should listen to it.
- 1:08[SPEAKER_01]: Or you can just skip ahead and then realize it that it's that that's a sign you publish it so that I promise they're not long I promise.
- 1:17[SPEAKER_01]: So our still episodes are on topics that you are having questions about yours and into the be a pod and you are wondering need help on that with had some really great guests in the show will continue have amazing guests, but also like sometimes we need a 20 minuteish chat about a topic right where we can just go oh yeah that that's that thing right just like a nugget of reminding and also to know you're not alone because hello I see you.
- 1:41[SPEAKER_01]: I see you as a recovering perfectionist over a cheever.
- 1:44[SPEAKER_01]: I felt like everything, I remember feeling everything I did had to be productive of some kind.
- 1:49[SPEAKER_01]: So it has an also no podcast, I need to be a business podcast or a self development podcast of some kind of high rate of book.
- 1:56[SPEAKER_01]: It had to be like that.
- 1:57[SPEAKER_01]: It had helped me move the needle forward if I were to go for a walk.
- 2:01[SPEAKER_01]: I would always listen to something that would move the needle forward for sure I'm not going to listen to just I'm not going to just like listen to the outside noise.
- 2:09[SPEAKER_01]: You know any space that I had in my life I go oh now I can go work on that project that I've been relying to move the needle forward on there was not just doing nothing
- 2:19[SPEAKER_02]: A lot of dinners that I would do when I lived in LA, like they had to always, they were always networking dinners of some kind.
- 2:24[SPEAKER_01]: When I moved to Vegas, and I took, we got, during the pandemic, so obviously in the pandemic, you know, we all lost a lot.
- 2:31[SPEAKER_01]: But I recognized that when I moved to Las Vegas, I was like, wow, if I'm not traveling for work,
- 2:38[SPEAKER_01]: I don't see any friends.
- 2:40[SPEAKER_01]: And now that we're months into this pandemic, those same people are not calling.
- 2:46[SPEAKER_01]: So did I have friends or just have a network, right?
- 2:49[SPEAKER_01]: I also know that I'm in a decade where I have spent several decades working.
- 2:54[SPEAKER_01]: and working on moving the needle forward.
- 2:57[SPEAKER_01]: And I don't have kids, but many of you do, and I've had business, I've worked jobs while also running in my own business on the side, and trying to date at the time, you know, like all those different things with some of you, you have business and kids and your partner and aging parents.
- 3:12[SPEAKER_01]: And so honestly, if anyone were to ask you right now, like what you want next, or what sounds fun to you.
- 3:25[SPEAKER_01]: Actually, it was in 2020, I was like, on my therapist.
- 3:28[SPEAKER_01]: I was like, you know, I don't have a hobby.
- 3:31[SPEAKER_01]: I don't have anything I just do for the fuck of it, you know, for fun.
- 3:35[SPEAKER_01]: I just like, what do you want to do?
- 3:37[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know.
- 3:38[SPEAKER_01]: And that's why I want a hobby hunting him.
- 3:39[SPEAKER_01]: If you've been with the podcast long enough, you know, that I, it took me a long time.
- 3:43[SPEAKER_01]: But,
- 3:44[SPEAKER_01]: We get so busy, we have no inner voice that we listen to, that says anything nice.
- 3:50[SPEAKER_01]: We're not able to listen to our intuition, go listen to intuition, seriously.
- 3:53[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, that help.
- 3:54[SPEAKER_01]: We are often just listening to the judgeee voice in our head that it's like, you are not doing enough.
- 3:57[SPEAKER_01]: You should be doing more.
- 3:58[SPEAKER_01]: How silly of you to think that you should sit there and just watch a show or learn to row, like all that stuff.
- 4:04[SPEAKER_01]: So I want us to dismantle that trap today.
- 4:07[SPEAKER_01]: So I'm happy you're here.
- 4:08[SPEAKER_01]: Thanks for being here.
- 4:09[SPEAKER_01]: I want to talk about why being the most curious as possible is actually not going to derail your goals, that the side quests that it will take you on are actually often what you need to learn a skill or to have.
- 4:27[SPEAKER_01]: a moment of freedom in your brain so that the idea that you've been trying to figure out how am I going to do that comes to you or so that you have time with friends to just be yourself and have joy, right, and not have something productive happening.
- 4:44[SPEAKER_01]: So I remember when I was in college, I saw these shoes.
- 4:50[SPEAKER_01]: We were selling at my store and they were hand painted.
- 4:52[SPEAKER_01]: And my girlfriend, I were like, we can, I don't want to hand paint in ones.
- 4:56[SPEAKER_01]: I want to deco-podge some, so we like deco-podge some shoes.
- 5:00[SPEAKER_01]: And then when we did that, our bosses were like, you made those?
- 5:03[SPEAKER_01]: Well, you got like, do you want to make more?
- 5:04[SPEAKER_01]: And so then we made them to sell them.
- 5:06[SPEAKER_01]: And by the way, every dime we made, we reinvested back into the business and it if we learned the hard way to have a resell license and to have a wholesale license and to sell and to have a business or taxes and all this is a accountant, all this different stuff.
- 5:21[SPEAKER_01]: But what happened is a side quest back in college with my my best friend who Claire who's been on the podcast us doing that, it really actually showed me all the different parts I would need to have when I started my own business.
- 5:35[SPEAKER_01]: So even though it wasn't, it didn't make money, it won, gave me a really cool story to make shoes.
- 5:42[SPEAKER_01]: And by the way, the shoe company that we used to decopage, they actually ended up knocking us off.
- 5:46[SPEAKER_01]: And that's what killed our business.
- 5:47[SPEAKER_01]: But at any rate, totally fine.
- 5:49[SPEAKER_01]: We needed to get out of it anyways.
- 5:51[SPEAKER_01]: But because of that, it wasn't scary for me to start a Pilates business, right?
- 5:56[SPEAKER_01]: And so when we think about little detours or side quests
- 6:03[SPEAKER_01]: Often they're exactly what we need to gain a skill that will, even not in the same way, I'm not in the shoe business, but it will translate, right?
- 6:11[SPEAKER_01]: I see this all the time in video games, there's a little side quest and they often like teach you a different way of using your character and then there's different ways to get different gems or powerups or things like that and then you go back to the regular game and now you have more skills, right?
- 6:24[SPEAKER_01]: And so side quests may not feel very productive or there might
- 6:32[SPEAKER_01]: but what they often give you is a boost in confidence, some self-trust, some self-knowing.
- 6:39[SPEAKER_01]: I also just got to spend time with my best friend when you're in college and you have a job.
- 6:44[SPEAKER_01]: That's really hard to do.
- 6:46[SPEAKER_01]: It's really hard to do.
- 6:47[SPEAKER_01]: So when you go on a detour, you're giving your brain room to breathe.
- 6:53[SPEAKER_01]: And that's what we need because often what happens is we just fill that space with stuff in our phone schedules social media what's going on.
- 7:02[SPEAKER_01]: What am I missing out on?
- 7:03[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, I got to check that.
- 7:04[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, I got to check with that person.
- 7:05[SPEAKER_01]: You know, and it's just a rush.
- 7:06[SPEAKER_01]: And this like our dopamine brain.
- 7:09[SPEAKER_01]: Mead is being switched to cortisol injections and they feel the same, but they're not.
- 7:15[SPEAKER_01]: So even though my story's out making shows, it was not getting bored, I do want to say that we need to talk about getting bored.
- 7:22[SPEAKER_01]: Most of us listen this podcast right now, remember a time where as a kid we got bored.
- 7:27[SPEAKER_01]: Like we would say, I'm bored, right?
- 7:29[SPEAKER_01]: And I'll talk to my yoga teacher who's been on this podcast and that even in Adi.
- 7:32[SPEAKER_01]: His kids, when they say their bored, he's like, yes, this is a great place to be.
- 7:39[SPEAKER_02]: This is where creativity comes from.
- 7:42[SPEAKER_01]: Right, so few kids are truly ever bored long enough to get creative because most of time when someone says, here's the kids bored, they give them an iPad or something to do or some food.
- 7:54[SPEAKER_01]: But boredom is the fertile ground of creativity that you have been looking for, that idea that restricting things, why can't I make this work?
- 8:02[SPEAKER_01]: What do I need to do?
- 8:03[SPEAKER_01]: When I am allowing my brain to just wander,
- 8:07[SPEAKER_01]: And follow, oh, what if I did that one to be cool?
- 8:11[SPEAKER_01]: We had episode one, when to be cool if I did this?
- 8:13[SPEAKER_01]: What could be better than this, right?
- 8:14[SPEAKER_01]: When you let your brain go on that path, you often come up with some brilliant stuff that you could never do in your stressed out rushing state.
- 8:23[SPEAKER_01]: So as I mentioned, cyclists, again, video game, tip thing, right?
- 8:28[SPEAKER_01]: Let's get that example from when you're my recovering professionals over achievers, we need to make our time that we do spend reading that business book or listening to educational podcasts and what if we just swapped one of those things for something that had nothing to do with that?
- 8:47[SPEAKER_01]: Brad and I stopped listening to political podcasts in exchange for the fourth wing series right and now that that series gone someone just gave us another book recommendation and I am so excited to go through that because the reality is having something at the end of the day one to look forward to because I can't wait to get lost in that book and two that's nothing to do with anything that matters.
- 9:12[SPEAKER_01]: allows us to just put our brain into a place that can actually get some good sleep.
- 9:17[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 9:18[SPEAKER_01]: So look, you don't have to be booked.
- 9:19[SPEAKER_01]: There's going to be a podcast maybe.
- 9:20[SPEAKER_01]: It is a hobby.
- 9:21[SPEAKER_01]: Maybe you might my girlfriend, um, she is going into bedazzle mode, right?
- 9:27[SPEAKER_01]: She is, I'm bedazzling this.
- 9:28[SPEAKER_01]: I'm bedazzling this.
- 9:29[SPEAKER_01]: I'm not because it's fun.
- 9:30[SPEAKER_01]: It has zero to do with what her job is, zero to do with her house needs.
- 9:34[SPEAKER_01]: And it allows her to just have something that
- 9:41[SPEAKER_01]: right, and you be surprised how that down regulates the nervous system in a way that takes your stress levels to down.
- 9:48[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, many of us need to be literally thinking about our stress levels, not just for pairing in a pause, but for our heart, right, for our sleep.
- 9:56[SPEAKER_01]: If you're in a getting good sleep, oh my god, the unit aside quest, you need a side quest, right?
- 10:00[SPEAKER_01]: I've talked a lot about curiosity.
- 10:02[SPEAKER_01]: I talk a lot about this when it comes to teaching Pilates, but I really want to
- 10:08[SPEAKER_01]: suggest that you take a like a kid like a approach to things.
- 10:15[SPEAKER_01]: Get curious, put question marks on things, right?
- 10:18[SPEAKER_01]: Too often we're like, I need a five-year plan on this thing that I'm doing.
- 10:22[SPEAKER_01]: You just need to go, hmm, what happens if I do this?
- 10:24[SPEAKER_01]: Right?
- 10:25[SPEAKER_01]: We have, ladies, we've sent so much time taking care of so many people.
- 10:29[SPEAKER_01]: We've often forgotten.
- 10:31[SPEAKER_01]: how to be curious.
- 10:32[SPEAKER_01]: How to kind of like flirt with our future selves?
- 10:34[SPEAKER_01]: I wonder what I would look like in that style of dream that's out.
- 10:38[SPEAKER_01]: So I'm like, oh, never look good on me.
- 10:40[SPEAKER_01]: Like I really thought I might think that the low rise is back, but then I kept asking these low rise, wide leg pants, and I don't know.
- 10:48[SPEAKER_01]: So then after 72 ads, I felt like I'm just going to bite.
- 10:51[SPEAKER_01]: And honestly, with the long oversized shirts, the outfit looks so chic, it looks so good.
- 10:57[SPEAKER_01]: It looks also so comfortable.
- 10:59[SPEAKER_01]: And that takes, but that takes curiosity.
- 11:01[SPEAKER_01]: I wonder what I look like in that.
- 11:03[SPEAKER_01]: I wonder where I'd wear that to.
- 11:04[SPEAKER_01]: I wonder whether what happened if I put these shoes on and said these shoes.
- 11:06[SPEAKER_01]: Like we get so used to being in our, this is my usual, this is how I do things that we forget that there's this fun thing about being curious and trying things out and often leads to other ideas and other adventures and other opportunities.
- 11:22[SPEAKER_01]: You know?
- 11:23[SPEAKER_01]: When we're on tour with something, there's often some days we have time and Brad and I will just pull off to a vintage shop and just walk inside because it's fun.
- 11:32[SPEAKER_01]: We don't even buy anything.
- 11:33[SPEAKER_01]: It's just fun to go in.
- 11:35[SPEAKER_01]: Actually curiosity led my girlfriend and I were in Sedona.
- 11:40[SPEAKER_01]: There's this one more place I want us to go to.
- 11:43[SPEAKER_01]: And it led us into a sound bath store, sound bowl store, right?
- 11:47[SPEAKER_01]: And then we were, oh, okay, I'm much are these things, $15,000.
- 11:52[SPEAKER_01]: Whoa, didn't expect that.
- 11:54[SPEAKER_01]: But we ended up going to a sound bath.
- 11:56[SPEAKER_01]: We got to enjoy a sound bath with bowls that collectively cost $105,000.
- 12:00[SPEAKER_01]: I'm going to tell you right now, I felt every dollar of that sound bath on my body.
- 12:05[SPEAKER_01]: All because we're curious about what's going on.
- 12:07[SPEAKER_01]: What's in this store over here, we're looking for a different store completely.
- 12:11[SPEAKER_01]: there's magic and detours and some of your best ideas are going to be in spaces you didn't plan for and I'm telling you that is so freaking true.
- 12:19[SPEAKER_01]: So my best ideas have come from just thinking, well, what if I did that?
- 12:24[SPEAKER_01]: How would that fit the plan?
- 12:26[SPEAKER_01]: I wonder and then just following it in my brain, right?
- 12:29[SPEAKER_01]: But that requires having pause time because I cannot let my brain follow a thought or
- 12:40[SPEAKER_01]: So now that we know, I hope you hope I still join here, ask me, when we create space, we create room for confidence.
- 12:49[SPEAKER_01]: So if you are on a sprint, you're sprinting, you can only see what's in front of you, but when you slow down, you can actually take in what's in front of you into the side of you, right?
- 12:59[SPEAKER_01]: When you go for just like a stroll.
- 13:01[SPEAKER_01]: And I'm often like rushing to get to the gym and the other day I would decide to walk alongside my dad.
- 13:07[SPEAKER_01]: And I was like, is that bar always gone in a full view?
- 13:12[SPEAKER_01]: I thought it went up against the wall.
- 13:14[SPEAKER_01]: And my dad looked at him and he said,
- 13:16[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 13:17[SPEAKER_01]: We're just like, oh my god, there is space to be curious and see something different because we're not rushing.
- 13:22[SPEAKER_01]: So the same goes for if you are wanting to take action towards what the the be it till you see it that you're working towards.
- 13:32[SPEAKER_01]: If you are rushing towards that, you are only able to see what's in front of you.
- 13:36[SPEAKER_01]: And one, by the way, that doesn't actually create confidence, it creates stress and pressure.
- 13:42[SPEAKER_01]: But if you actually take a stroll and allows you to take in all of your surroundings, and you actually have a sense of calmness around you.
- 13:49[SPEAKER_01]: Think about when we feel safe in a space, because we know everything that's in it.
- 13:53[SPEAKER_01]: We can see everything that's going on.
- 13:55[SPEAKER_01]: We can take it all in.
- 13:56[SPEAKER_01]: Right?
- 13:56[SPEAKER_01]: You will have more confidence because you know what is what's going on, what's over there.
- 14:03[SPEAKER_01]: Can make better decisions.
- 14:06[SPEAKER_01]: So being a TAC that next version of yourself, it requires space for magic and coincidence and possibility to enter.
- 14:13[SPEAKER_01]: You cannot manifest in your reality if you are scheduled as a pack tighter, then my suitcase in for a month in Europe.
- 14:20[SPEAKER_02]: right?
- 14:20[SPEAKER_02]: There is no room for surprise.
- 14:24[SPEAKER_01]: You won't even look for surprise.
- 14:26[SPEAKER_01]: So when we were traveling to Europe, I'll just bring my suitcase back into this.
- 14:29[SPEAKER_01]: We're traveling to Europe.
- 14:31[SPEAKER_01]: We were so excited because we had a bunch of flashcards where we were getting rid of and so we're going to have space to get something fabulous from a vintage shop in Europe.
- 14:38[SPEAKER_01]: And because we had this space, we went out seeking, we went to like 20 vintage shops and Paris and one day it was so much fun.
- 14:44[SPEAKER_01]: I got the coolest jacket and I was, oh my god, I was really hoping for the purse.
- 14:48[SPEAKER_01]: You know, but Brad found these great shoes and we could, if we had packed everything so tight that there could be nothing new added to it, we would not have explored as much of Paris as we did.
- 15:00[SPEAKER_01]: There would be no room for curiosity because there would be no room for what we found anything.
- 15:04[SPEAKER_01]: That goes for your life too.
- 15:05[SPEAKER_01]: If you pack your schedule so tight, you don't even want a detour, even if it would take you exactly where you're wanting to go because you don't have room to get lost.
- 15:15[SPEAKER_01]: You can't trust that getting lost could take you exactly to the right place, right?
- 15:21[SPEAKER_01]: So, what does this mean for you?
- 15:23[SPEAKER_01]: What do we need to do next?
- 15:23[SPEAKER_01]: Now that we've sold your curiosity, we sold your own Korean space, so you have confidence and room to be at taste, see it, what do you need to do?
- 15:31[SPEAKER_01]: What we need to do is play more.
- 15:34[SPEAKER_01]: Have more unproductive time.
- 15:36[SPEAKER_01]: Have time to...
- 15:39[SPEAKER_01]: be curious.
- 15:41[SPEAKER_01]: Maybe you take walks without your podcast on or before you turn your podcast on, maybe you look for, we had a guess who said, look for three miracles, right?
- 15:49[SPEAKER_01]: Maybe you don't just go to a coffee shop to work, but you just go to a coffee shop to sit or read a book that has zero, zero impact on your life, right?
- 16:01[SPEAKER_01]: Maybe you do paint.
- 16:02[SPEAKER_01]: Maybe you learn a skill that
- 16:09[SPEAKER_01]: If that feels overwhelming, then I just want you to have one unproductive hour at this week.
- 16:13[SPEAKER_01]: Just one, no cleaning, no working, no social media, so no phone.
- 16:19[SPEAKER_01]: If you've ever read the artist's way, you go on an artist's date.
- 16:23[SPEAKER_01]: So you go do something that you have always said about doing.
- 16:27[SPEAKER_01]: Maybe there's a bookstore in 10, you've always wanted to go to, or a coffee shop, you've been, you've wanted to explore or someone recommended a salad or a sandwich at this new place that opened up, but you don't, you go and you don't get on your phone when you're there, you just go and you eat.
- 16:40[SPEAKER_01]: You take yourself on a date and you see what bubbles up when there's no pressure.
- 16:48[SPEAKER_01]: I can't wait to hear about it.
- 16:49[SPEAKER_01]: So please tell us what happened on your magical unproductive hour date by sending it to thebietpod.com such questions.
- 16:56[SPEAKER_01]: Maybe that's your win that you're sending in.
- 16:58[SPEAKER_01]: Like, hey, I had an unproductive hour this week.
- 17:00[SPEAKER_01]: I did it.
- 17:00[SPEAKER_01]: I took myself an unproductive date.
- 17:03[SPEAKER_01]: I want to celebrate that with you.
- 17:05[SPEAKER_02]: And if you know a friend that's going to be helpful, tour, please send it to them.
- 17:08[SPEAKER_01]: Honestly, like you sharing this podcast is one of the best things you could ever, ever, ever do.
- 17:14[SPEAKER_01]: The next best thing would be a member of OPC and that'd be something that supports you as well.
- 17:17[SPEAKER_02]: All right, my loves.
- 17:18[SPEAKER_01]: Until next time, be it, tell you see it.
- 17:21[SPEAKER_02]: That's all I got for this episode of The Beat Tell You See A Podcast.
