- 0:00What's up, guys? Welcome back to Three Up, Three
- 0:02Down, coming to you live on a Monday before the Monday Night
- 0:05Football game. We got an off day today for the
- 0:07Cardinals, which is a relief to everybody watching this video.
- 0:11After a spirited, spirited series win against Milwaukee,
- 0:15the Cardinals laid a total egg against the Mariners, who I told
- 0:19you guys couldn't score. Well, I didn't factor in certain
- 0:23things that we're going to discuss later in this video so
- 0:27that, you know, it was a tough weekend to be a Cardinals fan
- 0:29for sure. Obviously, you could distract
- 0:30yourselves with the football on Saturday and Friday and Thursday
- 0:33and Sunday. But yeah, it wasn't a great
- 0:37weekend to be a Cardinals fan. I know that just last week I
- 0:39told you guys we're going to talk downs first, but we've got
- 0:42to flip the script this week. We got to talk OPS first because
- 0:45I need to get into the downs. We're going to dive deep into a
- 0:48specific down that I know everybody wants to talk about.
- 0:51My first up, Pedro Pajes, pretty much since the moment I said I
- 0:54don't really want to see him play anymore, he's been hitting
- 0:57big. Two run Homer Saturday night.
- 0:59You'd hope that they could carry that momentum into Sunday.
- 1:02They couldn't, but that's OK. I still am really interested to
- 1:06see what they do with the catcher's position going
- 1:08forward. You know, they have three guys
- 1:10under club control next year. They've got Wilson, Herrera and
- 1:14Pius. You got to make a a choice on
- 1:16Herrera at some point. I feel like this is like year 4
- 1:19for him kind of being like he's in the mix, but he's not in the
- 1:22mix and then he's going to do 2 months in Memphis.
- 1:25So I'm really curious to see what they do there.
- 1:27My preference would be Contreras and Herrera.
- 1:29They need bats. Those guys can both hit.
- 1:32I understand that the pitchers like throwing the Pius, but I I
- 1:35don't think the glove gives you enough to justify it.
- 1:39My second up is Kyle Gibson. I think Gibson, first of all,
- 1:42he's nailed Saturday night. Great start.
- 1:45He's had a really interesting season to me because it does
- 1:48feel like every time I'm kind of starting to think I can trust
- 1:51this guy, he's going to give me 5 to 6 strong, he goes out and
- 1:55lays an egg. He dealt with the back injury,
- 1:57You know, he was on bereavement leave earlier this year or
- 2:00paternity leave this year. So you know, it it, it's been a
- 2:03really interesting leave for, for Gibbs year for Gibson.
- 2:06He's had 154 innings, 27 starts, 8K's per nine and a 4.2 or a
- 2:12what I what I find so interesting about it is they
- 2:14they've got a club option on him next year and I don't think
- 2:17they're going to pick up Lens, but I do think they're going to
- 2:19pick up Gibsons. He's going to end up around 170
- 2:22innings at a 4.2 ish ERA. Like if you had told them that
- 2:26from the jump at the beginning of the season, I think they
- 2:29would have taken that and I think they would have said yes,
- 2:31we are picking up that option. My third up.
- 2:34I feel like I say it every week guys, but Helsley is
- 2:36unbelievable. 43 saves. We got to get him six more and
- 2:41get the club record. I, I just feel like he deserves
- 2:43it. That guy is so, so good.
- 2:45I still really haven't gotten over what he did in Milwaukee.
- 2:47I know I talked about it on the last video.
- 2:49So we're not going to dive too much further into that.
- 2:51The thing that interests me about Helsley is I'm really
- 2:57interested to see what they do with him this offseason.
- 2:59He has one year left of club control and arbitration.
- 3:01He's going to make a boatload of money, a boatload of money.
- 3:04And the Cardinals have tended to not pay relievers.
- 3:09They DFA Trevor Rosenthal before his third year of ARB.
- 3:12Now he had an elbow thing. So it it, it depends a lot on
- 3:15these guys, but they're gonna come to a decision on Helsley at
- 3:19some point here where they're probably gonna have to trade him
- 3:22or extend him. You got to think about it this
- 3:26way. And if they don't think the club
- 3:28is gonna be very good next year, which I'm really curious to see
- 3:31what they do, I think they're gonna trade him because Helsley
- 3:35is probably the guy on the club right now that is the most
- 3:38elite. You know, he is the best at his
- 3:40possession relative to all of the other guys at the position.
- 3:44I think he's going to get you a ton, especially if you trade him
- 3:47in the offseason so another team gets him for a full year.
- 3:49I knew a lot of people wanted to trade him in July and just like
- 3:53load up on prospects, but I think they're going to move him.
- 3:57That would be my guess if I had to guess today.
- 3:59If they don't extend him at a good number, which they just
- 4:02don't like paying relievers, they just don't do it.
- 4:04It seems like when they do it, it doesn't go well.
- 4:06So Andrew Miller, Brett Cecil or two that come to mind.
- 4:09So I I think you're going to see him walk, which is a bummer or
- 4:12not walk. I think he's going to be traded,
- 4:13which is a bummer because he is a really good pitcher, but I
- 4:16think they could get a haul for him.
- 4:18Pitching prices have have changed a little bit.
- 4:19You know, I looked at some comps, I thought like Chapman
- 4:22when he was moved in 16, Andrew Miller when he was moved in 16.
- 4:25But those guys were both moved for like top of the org
- 4:28prospects. I don't think you're getting
- 4:29that anymore for Helsley. The way the game has changed,
- 4:32the way teams kind of hoard prospects more than they used
- 4:34to. But you could still go out and
- 4:36get an impact outfielder, an impact center fielder from the
- 4:39Orioles. The Orioles, I always need
- 4:41bullpen help. They're still relying on Craig
- 4:42Kimbrel. I'm surprised they didn't push
- 4:45for Helsley in July. I would have if I was the
- 4:48Orioles because they're they're in a chance to win right now.
- 4:51But this offseason is going to be really interesting.
- 4:53Those that were super tuned in, remember I told you guys 3 weeks
- 4:56ago, Gary Larocque was out. He was going to retire.
- 4:59I guess I, I didn't say it very firmly, but it's official.
- 5:02He is retiring. So I do find it really
- 5:04interesting to see what they're going to do this offseason.
- 5:07I don't think it's a given MO is back.
- 5:09He will be on the staff somewhere, but I'm not sure he
- 5:12will be the decision maker next year.
- 5:15I think Kind Bloom is very involved and anytime you bring a
- 5:18new guy in, it's really interesting to see who else they
- 5:21bring in. I think you have to bring in
- 5:23somebody from the outside to run the farm, to take over from
- 5:26Little Rock. Just change the scenery, change
- 5:28your voice, makes up the message a little bit here.
- 5:31Because if you, if all they do is is replace Lorac with someone
- 5:35who is similar, you're not you're not going to see anything
- 5:38different. I think Kime is going to be big
- 5:40there. Let's talk the downs, the
- 5:42standings. Yeah, it's it's probably over.
- 5:46There's six back. To get to 88 wins, which is the
- 5:48magic number, the Cardinals have to go 16 and 4.
- 5:51Atlanta and New York would just have to go 10 and 9.
- 5:53It's going to be tough to go 16 and 4.
- 5:56I don't think they've had a stretch that good since probably
- 5:59the 17 game-winning streak. Really tough to do my second
- 6:03down. Let's talk starting pitchers
- 6:07right now in the staff. The Cardinals have two guys.
- 6:10Matt I guess isn't in the rotation right now.
- 6:12Right now they've got a guy and 1/2 that I, I can't, I can't get
- 6:16anywhere near. So what I did was this was a
- 6:20laborious task, but after work today I tiered every Cardinal
- 6:24starting pitcher to make a start since 2011.
- 6:27I'm going to try and RIP through these.
- 6:29Some we can agree, some we can disagree.
- 6:30I'll dive into a few. My first tier, ace, Wainwright,
- 6:35Flaherty, Waka, Carpenter, no brainer.
- 6:38My second tier, no complaints. Gibson, Gray, Fetty Hap, Wade
- 6:43LeBlanc, who saved the 2021 season, Jaime Garcia, Kyle
- 6:47Loesch and Edwin Jackson. My third tier.
- 6:50I wish we'd had more time together.
- 6:52Jordan Montgomery, Jose Quintana.
- 6:54I think both those guys would still be really good fits.
- 6:56I know Montgomery's had it down here.
- 6:58My 4th tier traded for a superstar.
- 7:01Austin Gomber, Luke Weaver, Marco Gonzalez, Shelby Miller.
- 7:05You can nitpick with the bottom 2, but Tyler Ward was a six war
- 7:08player. Tyler O'Neill was a six war
- 7:10player. Jason Hayward was a six war
- 7:12player. Mike Myers, his tier that start.
- 7:16John gassed his tier, not John Gant.
- 7:20Drew, ROM, Paki, Naughton, Genesis Cabrera, Tyson Ross, Tim
- 7:24Cooney, Miguel Bautista, Brandon Dixon.
- 7:26No recollection. Justin Masterson literally had
- 7:29one good start. Daniel Ponce, De Leon almost had
- 7:32a no hitter in his debut, so we think way too fondly on his
- 7:35Cardinals career. Zach Thompson, Dakota Huts and
- 7:38Jake Woodford. First round picks who weren't
- 7:40very good. Steven Max, John Gant, Mike
- 7:43Leak, Nick Greenwood. I would never want this guy
- 7:45starting a game. Tyler Lyons, Jake Westbrook.
- 7:49I would only want this guy starting big games, No normal
- 7:51games. Lance Lynn, Lance Linn, Andre
- 7:56Palante, Johanno Viedo, KK and Joe Kelly, relievers who were
- 8:01actually pretty decent at starting.
- 8:03Matthew Libertour, Jordan Hicks, Kyle McClellan, better as a
- 8:06reliever, Graceffo and Mcgreevy. Give me more of these guys and
- 8:11less of the guy we're going to talk about here in a minute.
- 8:14Carlos Martinez and Alex Reyes. Carlos Martinez and Alex Reyes,
- 8:18Jon Lester, John Lackey. Both guys that I loathed until
- 8:21they were Cardinals and then I couldn't get enough of them, and
- 8:23then I was so sad when they were gone.
- 8:25Oh, I hated John Lackey. But then 2015 John Lackey was
- 8:28elite. My last and least here, Miles
- 8:32Michaelis got a twenty $40 million extension and has had an
- 8:35ERA of five point 1-2 cents. I'm done.
- 8:38I can't. I will not watch another
- 8:40Michaelis start this year. That's a promise.
- 8:42I will watch the offense. I will find a way to to make
- 8:45sure I know what happened in those games.
- 8:46I will not watch Miles Michaelis start again this year.
- 8:49He is terrible every time something goes wrong.
- 8:52He had started earlier this year.
- 8:53Where I think he got called for a balk when he definitely balked
- 8:58and he was like I'm mad. So then he threw 3 pitches 97
- 9:01for no reason whatsoever. I'm done with it.
- 9:04I agree with everybody else that says they need to DFAM.
- 9:07It's a sunk cost. Get get rid of him.
- 9:11He is not going to give you anything next year.
- 9:12You already have Steven Matz here.
- 9:14You're going to have to deal with missing 3 months next year.
- 9:16I, I just, I loathe watching him.
- 9:18He had a good 2018. He had a great 2018.
- 9:21You know what? He had a great 2018.
- 9:22But since then it has just not been worth it.
- 9:25He was fine in 19, he was fine in 22, but I can't stand
- 9:29watching him. The attitude's terrible.
- 9:31The results are even worse than the attitude.
- 9:34Done. Let me know what you guys think
- 9:37about the tears. I'm going to tweet the link.
- 9:38Tweet the picture as well. As always, thanks for the
- 9:41feedback on the last video. Let me know what you guys think.
- 9:43Looking forward to talking with you after the week is over.
