- 0:11Speaker 1: Welcome to Girls Gone Hallmark, a Hallmark Review podcast. I'm Megan,
- 0:14Speaker 1: and I'm a longtime Hallmark fan. I'm Wendy. I'm a
- 0:16Speaker 1: former Hallmark hater. On today's episode, we are discussing Mr.
- 0:19Speaker 1: and Mrs. Christmas, which originally aired on Sunday, October 18th,
- 0:24Speaker 1: on the Hallmark channel and is now streaming on Hallmark +.
- 0:28Speaker 1: We hope you enjoyed this first weekend of Countdown to
- 0:31Speaker 1: Christmas movies and this first week of Countdown to Christmas
- 0:34Speaker 1: movie reviews from us. We're posting the weekly schedule every
- 0:38Speaker 1: week on Instagram, as well as a schedule of what
- 0:41Speaker 1: we're reviewing on Instagram. We are Girls Gone Hallmark. If
- 0:44Speaker 1: you want a more in-depth look at things, we invite
- 0:46Speaker 1: you to subscribe to our newsletter. You can do that
- 0:50Speaker 1: over on girlsgonehallmark.com, which is a treasure trove of information
- 0:54Speaker 1: from us.
- 0:55Speaker 2: You know, somebody was in our Facebook group yesterday asking,
- 0:58Speaker 2: who played so-and-so in so-and-so? And I was like, Please
- 1:03Speaker 2: look at our website. We have all that information.
- 1:05Speaker 1: Did you see that I commented that? I didn't. I said,
- 1:10Speaker 1: this is who plays it. And by the way, this
- 1:11Speaker 1: information can almost always be found in the news and
- 1:14Speaker 1: notes section of our website on each and every movie. Yeah.
- 1:20Speaker 1: Let's talk about Mr. and Mrs. Christmas with a synopsis.
- 1:24Speaker 2: A single dad and holiday decorating expert moves to a
- 1:28Speaker 2: new town with his two children and teams up with
- 1:31Speaker 2: a practical accountant to revive the local Christmas market. As
- 1:37Speaker 2: romance blossoms, they discover that embracing change might be the
- 1:40Speaker 2: secret to creating new holiday traditions.
- 1:45Speaker 1: Peter Benson directs Mr. and Mrs. Christmas, and he's certainly
- 1:48Speaker 1: no strange to hallmark both in front of and behind
- 1:51Speaker 1: the camera.
- 1:52Speaker 2: This script comes from Ryan Smith, whose previous Hallmark writing
- 1:55Speaker 2: credits include A Dance in the Snow and Private Princess Christmas.
- 2:00Speaker 1: Pascal Hutton plays Sophie and is best known to Hallmark
- 2:03Speaker 1: fans as Rosemary Coulter on When Calls the Heart. And
- 2:05Speaker 1: she's also been showing off her comedic chops as the
- 2:08Speaker 1: delightfully quirky title character in the Nelly Knows Mysteries franchise.
- 2:14Speaker 2: Brendan Penny plays Taylor. We last saw him trading his
- 2:17Speaker 2: Hallmark sweaters for cowboy boots in Texas Two-Step. He also
- 2:22Speaker 2: starred in two 2025 holiday movies, The More the Merrier
- 2:26Speaker 2: and Merry Christmas, Ted Cooper.
- 2:28Speaker 1: Alex McIsaac plays Taylor's teenage daughter, Jenna, and she's another
- 2:32Speaker 1: promising young Hallmark talent. She has a recurring role as
- 2:35Speaker 1: Gwendolyn on When Calls the Heart and also appeared in
- 2:38Speaker 1: Two for Tea earlier this year.
- 2:40Speaker 2: Miles Marthaler plays Taylor's son, Arlo, but Hallmark fans will
- 2:45Speaker 2: likely recognize him as Thomas from the Three Wise Men
- 2:49Speaker 2: movie franchise.
- 2:50Speaker 1: Aww. Little Thomas. Mason Nicholson plays Sophie's daughter, Lily, and
- 2:55Speaker 1: she's already built quite the Hallmark resume, appearing in The
- 2:57Speaker 1: Curious Caterer Mysteries, Field Day, and North to Home.
- 3:01Speaker 2: Eric Gao plays Paul, and here's a fun little Hallmark connection.
- 3:05Speaker 2: He spent the last three seasons playing Edwin on When
- 3:08Speaker 2: Calls the Heart, making this movie a mini Hope Valley
- 3:13Speaker 2: reunion with Pascal Hutton.
- 3:15Speaker 1: Now, last week, we had The Spirit of Halloween. which
- 3:20Speaker 1: was a Hardy-Chessie crossover with Megan Ori and Kevin McGarry.
- 3:25Speaker 1: This week, we have another Hardy-Chessie crossover with Brendan Penny
- 3:28Speaker 1: and Pascal Hutton. So we're just feeding the fandoms here.
- 3:32Speaker 2: I'm shaking my head. Yes, you're right. I wonder if
- 3:37Speaker 2: feeding is the right word. Is this enough for like
- 3:40Speaker 2: the fandoms who really are like, give me... Because is
- 3:44Speaker 2: there a show, I guess maybe The Way Home? That
- 3:50Speaker 2: would be a fandom where I could see would be
- 3:53Speaker 2: very excited if we got Kyler Lee in a Christmas movie.
- 3:57Speaker 1: And you know what I mean? Yeah, I think it's
- 3:59Speaker 1: hard for us to speak on this because we are
- 4:01Speaker 1: neither Hardys nor Chessies. Yeah, exactly. So weigh in, Hardys
- 4:04Speaker 1: and Chessies. I'm curious. Wendy, what's your first impression of Mr.
- 4:08Speaker 1: and Mrs. Christmas? Mr.
- 4:10Speaker 2: Fix-its, but the entire movie being Mr.
- 4:13Speaker 1: Mess-it-up. My first impression is Captain Buzzkill reporting for duty.
- 4:19Speaker 1: I spent this entire movie yelling about how the logistics
- 4:23Speaker 1: make no sense. Oh, yes. You and me both.
- 4:26Speaker 2: You and me both.
- 4:30Speaker 1: Let's talk about what we liked about this movie.
- 4:32Speaker 2: I want to talk about Hallmark's Next Generation.
- 4:36Speaker 1: Okay.
- 4:37Speaker 2: I think they look pretty promising.
- 4:38Speaker 1: Yeah. Hear me out for a second.
- 4:41Speaker 2: I have said a few times this year that I
- 4:44Speaker 2: think Hallmark has stepped up its casting of younger actors
- 4:49Speaker 2: because previously, you know, I don't like kids in movies.
- 4:53Speaker 2: They're either, like, too precocious or they deliver a dialogue
- 4:59Speaker 2: that has been written for a teenager but is not.
- 5:02Speaker 2: This year, I think, though, they've nailed it.
- 5:06Speaker 1: Yes.
- 5:06Speaker 2: I don't come away going– Like I'm not cringing at
- 5:09Speaker 2: like kids in movies.
- 5:11Speaker 1: I thought Lily nailed it. So did I.
- 5:13Speaker 2: So that's why I'm saying I thought the actress who
- 5:18Speaker 2: played Jenna and the actress who played Lily, the two.
- 5:21Speaker 1: Daughters, were great. Were absolutely great. And Miles Marthaler did
- 5:27Speaker 1: what Miles Marthaler does and comes in as a cute
- 5:29Speaker 1: little kid. Yeah, exactly. Arlo, great name. Great name. Totally.
- 5:37Speaker 2: But I thought those two were great. And I have
- 5:39Speaker 2: high hopes for their future.
- 5:41Speaker 1: I love that. I'm a big fan of the character
- 5:44Speaker 1: of Sophie in this movie. And I think, thank goodness
- 5:47Speaker 1: for her as the voice of reason who comes in
- 5:50Speaker 1: and she's like, yo, kids grow up and you need.
- 5:54Speaker 2: To adapt with them. That was the best advice given
- 5:58Speaker 2: in this movie.
- 5:59Speaker 1: Yes. I heard it. Yes. As did I. It's my
- 6:03Speaker 1: favorite movie. element of this movie is when she's saying, look,
- 6:08Speaker 1: kids change and the traditions are going to need to
- 6:11Speaker 1: change with them. The relationship is going to change shape,
- 6:14Speaker 1: but it's not going to end. And I do understand
- 6:18Speaker 1: why Taylor couldn't get that, like was having a hard time. Like,
- 6:21Speaker 1: I think that's a very normal transition to struggle with.
- 6:24Speaker 1: here's all these traditions that are so meaningful, and why
- 6:26Speaker 1: can't I recapture the magic of that exact tradition? And
- 6:30Speaker 1: he just kept stumbling and trying to recreate the magic.
- 6:34Speaker 1: He just couldn't get there. Sophie, maybe because she's a woman,
- 6:39Speaker 1: I don't know, but she and Lily just had this
- 6:43Speaker 1: unit that worked. It just, it worked. They're fictional characters,
- 6:48Speaker 1: but to me it worked, and I appreciated her trying
- 6:52Speaker 1: to guide Taylor. I think It might be easy to
- 6:56Speaker 1: watch this movie kind of not too far on the
- 6:59Speaker 1: heels of Texas Two-Step and be like, oh, these are
- 7:01Speaker 1: two very different Brendan Pennies. And I think this Brendan
- 7:05Speaker 1: Penny was kind of bringing real strong, like, dad energy. Yes.
- 7:10Speaker 1: And appropriately so, because this was a dad who was
- 7:14Speaker 1: trying to find his way. And so I just thought Sophie,
- 7:20Speaker 1: in more ways than one, had it all together. I thought.
- 7:24Speaker 2: I agree with you. I thought Sophie's advice was well-written
- 7:31Speaker 2: more than once, but that scene does stick out to me.
- 7:34Speaker 2: She wasn't judging him or shaming him. She just was
- 7:38Speaker 2: like gently guiding him in terms of like, oh, maybe that's,
- 7:43Speaker 2: maybe you just need to evolve, you know? It's understood
- 7:47Speaker 2: to me as, and probably you too, as like parents,
- 7:51Speaker 2: of now older children and you are trying to freeze these,
- 7:58Speaker 2: you know, holiday, it's not even holiday traditions really, but
- 8:01Speaker 2: these like, you're trying to recreate or freeze these moments
- 8:04Speaker 2: that were really great for your family and you want
- 8:06Speaker 2: to experience those like year after year after year. But
- 8:11Speaker 2: our children are, changing, right? And there can't.
- 8:15Speaker 1: Always be that. It's just not going to be the same.
- 8:18Speaker 2: And so, you know, I really understood that storyline in there.
- 8:24Speaker 2: I think it could have been done better. I'm going
- 8:26Speaker 2: to get to it in my wishes, but I like
- 8:29Speaker 2: the idea of it.
- 8:31Speaker 1: You know, I don't know.
- 8:33Speaker 2: If you remember, but when we recorded our review for
- 8:37Speaker 2: tis the season for setups. I think I said out loud,
- 8:42Speaker 2: I'm trying to really find the relatable storyline for me
- 8:45Speaker 2: in these movies this season. So this one hits for
- 8:49Speaker 2: me in that vein. But there's a lot of other
- 8:53Speaker 2: things about this movie that didn't land for me. And
- 8:56Speaker 2: I'm going to get there.
- 8:58Speaker 1: I do want to talk a little bit more about
- 8:59Speaker 1: Pascal Hutton. There's a scene that really landed for me.
- 9:03Speaker 1: And that is the I hesitate to call it a fight,
- 9:06Speaker 1: but that's kind of what it is. And goodbye scene
- 9:09Speaker 1: where she comes to his house after he's blown the budget.
- 9:12Speaker 1: And she's basically letting him know that the parade has
- 9:15Speaker 1: been canceled and he's apologizing, but it's not enough. And
- 9:20Speaker 1: she's not mean at all, but she's disappointed and it's
- 9:26Speaker 1: potentially going to cost her the promotion. And she's frustrated
- 9:29Speaker 1: with him and frustrated with herself that she didn't stop
- 9:32Speaker 1: this from happening and, And she's not cruel, but I
- 9:36Speaker 1: feel like so often in these, you know, third act conflicts,
- 9:41Speaker 1: it's manufactured. And in this case, I felt like her
- 9:46Speaker 1: frustration was so warranted and so earned. And then towards
- 9:50Speaker 1: the end of that scene, it's kind of a goodbye.
- 9:53Speaker 1: She says, you know, Merry Christmas, Taylor. And she hands
- 9:57Speaker 1: him back the keychain and she leaves. I just thought
- 10:01Speaker 1: that was a nice scene from Pascal Hutton. I thought
- 10:05Speaker 1: that was a good.
- 10:05Speaker 2: Scene, too, except to then in the next scene scream
- 10:10Speaker 2: at the TV. I said, no, because then he gets
- 10:14Speaker 2: this like bright idea again.
- 10:16Speaker 1: This is what I'm talking about. Mr. Fix it messes
- 10:18Speaker 1: it up again. Yes, the grief. Dude, stop trying. Stop.
- 10:24Speaker 1: Just stop.
- 10:26Speaker 2: Don't try to save this woman's job because you messed
- 10:29Speaker 2: it up. No.
- 10:31Speaker 1: No. No, no, no.
- 10:32Speaker 2: Like, he can't get out of.
- 10:34Speaker 1: His own way. Agree. That was really frustrating to watch
- 10:38Speaker 1: for me. Personally. Personally.
- 10:40Speaker 2: I liked that we don't pretend that divorce doesn't exist.
- 10:45Speaker 2: We have Taylor and his divorced ex-wife.
- 10:47Speaker 1: And there's no, like, weird.
- 10:50Speaker 2: weirdness other than like she had to leave the country
- 10:53Speaker 2: to go help her, you know, aging parents. I don't
- 10:55Speaker 2: know why she had to leave the country, like maybe
- 10:58Speaker 2: leave the state. It's still hard to see your children
- 11:01Speaker 2: if your state's away too.
- 11:03Speaker 1: You know what I mean?
- 11:04Speaker 2: But of course that stops because Sophie was a widow.
- 11:07Speaker 2: So one deceased spouse per Hallmark movie. Right.
- 11:12Speaker 1: But I, I like back to the divorce storyline. I
- 11:16Speaker 1: like that At the end of this movie, things are
- 11:19Speaker 1: not perfect for Jenna. Like, she is willing to sit
- 11:22Speaker 1: in the discomfort. She's like, I don't need you to
- 11:25Speaker 1: fix this for me. Oh, I'm going to talk about
- 11:27Speaker 1: that in my wishes. But she just needed him to
- 11:30Speaker 1: hear her. And it frustrated me because he kept saying,
- 11:34Speaker 1: you're going to make so many friends. I guarantee it.
- 11:36Speaker 1: I'm going to fix this. I promise you. And I was, like,
- 11:39Speaker 1: screaming at the TV. I know this is in our
- 11:40Speaker 1: wishes section. But I was like, stop. Stop making promises
- 11:43Speaker 1: that you– Don't have any idea if you're going to
- 11:45Speaker 1: be able to follow through on. Yeah. But I liked
- 11:48Speaker 1: when she was like, I don't need you to fix
- 11:50Speaker 1: this for me. I'm having a hard time. Just be
- 11:54Speaker 1: my dad. Yeah. Just listen to me. Just hear me. Yeah. No,
- 11:57Speaker 1: and I get that.
- 11:59Speaker 2: I'm going to talk about it in my wishes too,
- 12:01Speaker 2: but I get that as a parent because we spend
- 12:03Speaker 2: so many years trying to, like you just told me
- 12:06Speaker 2: off mic about a situation with your daughter where you
- 12:09Speaker 2: like had to email the teacher and like whatever. There
- 12:12Speaker 2: is this where we want to, I don't want to
- 12:14Speaker 2: say come to the rescue, but help ease our kids,
- 12:17Speaker 2: make their lives a little bit easier, right? So I
- 12:21Speaker 2: get where he maybe feels now because there is, the
- 12:26Speaker 2: mom isn't in the picture, like he's really got to like,
- 12:30Speaker 2: Go 180.
- 12:30Speaker 1: Everything. Everything.
- 12:32Speaker 2: So, like, I get that as a parent. And it
- 12:35Speaker 2: is a hard lesson to learn to like pull back
- 12:38Speaker 2: a little bit. Like they need to like advocate for
- 12:40Speaker 2: themselves or learn the hard way or whatever.
- 12:43Speaker 1: You know what I mean? Of course. And it is
- 12:44Speaker 1: easy from the outside to have this judgment. I mean,
- 12:47Speaker 1: I absolutely want to fix things too. I mean, that's
- 12:51Speaker 1: my attitude. It's in my DNA.
- 12:53Speaker 2: Yes.
- 12:53Speaker 1: Yes. And like my dad's a fixer too. Like he's like,
- 12:57Speaker 1: how can I fix this problem? And I really, that
- 13:00Speaker 1: is a lesson that I needed to learn myself and
- 13:02Speaker 1: hopefully I wouldn't.
- 13:03Speaker 2: Go so far as Taylor did in this movie. But
- 13:07Speaker 2: he moved with good intention, especially with the market thing.
- 13:10Speaker 2: And he thought, oh, I'm going to make this market
- 13:14Speaker 2: situation more fun for my teenage daughter and her new friends.
- 13:19Speaker 1: And we're going to have.
- 13:19Speaker 2: Bubble tea or boba tea or whatever and a band
- 13:23Speaker 2: and this and that and all these fun things. But like,
- 13:25Speaker 2: It was like a swing and a miss, dude. Like
- 13:27Speaker 2: you try, but you didn't. Like you tried, but you failed.
- 13:31Speaker 1: Right. There has to be some balance. Like it had
- 13:33Speaker 1: lost all the things that had once made it magical
- 13:35Speaker 1: and it had lost the magic for some of the
- 13:38Speaker 1: older citizens, right? Like you can't design a community event
- 13:41Speaker 1: with one person in mind. Yeah. But I think the
- 13:45Speaker 1: thing with Jenna was like, look, this isn't a problem
- 13:48Speaker 1: that's going to be solved overnight. Totally. This is a
- 13:51Speaker 1: process that you're just going to have to acknowledge. Like
- 13:54Speaker 1: I'm not just going to I needed him to be like, no,
- 13:57Speaker 1: this is hard. Just agree with her. You're right. This
- 14:00Speaker 1: is hard. It is going to take a minute to
- 14:02Speaker 1: find your people.
- 14:04Speaker 2: Yeah, because don't you think we, and this is probably
- 14:07Speaker 2: what I did, is like then we raise kids who
- 14:10Speaker 2: come to us to help solve every problem and where
- 14:12Speaker 2: they don't solve the problems on their own.
- 14:14Speaker 1: Oh, sure. You know, right?
- 14:18Speaker 2: See, I'm told you I'm looking for the relatable stories.
- 14:22Speaker 1: Yeah, of course. In these movies. Go ahead. Go ahead.
- 14:24Speaker 1: I have one more like.
- 14:25Speaker 2: Yeah. They got a budget. They got a decor budget
- 14:29Speaker 2: on this movie. I thought the Christmas decor throughout was
- 14:32Speaker 2: really well done. Oh, yeah.
- 14:34Speaker 1: I agree.
- 14:35Speaker 2: We got inflatables. I know you're not like an inflatable galley.
- 14:39Speaker 2: I'm not the.
- 14:41Speaker 1: Biggest fan of inflatables for myself, but I do like
- 14:44Speaker 1: their big visual impact.
- 14:46Speaker 2: But then even like the Christmas trees looked good. All
- 14:48Speaker 2: the garland stuff looked good. We've been coming off of
- 14:51Speaker 2: a fall season where.
- 14:54Speaker 1: Real faux. Yeah. I just think it's hard to do.
- 14:57Speaker 1: I don't think it's as hard to do faux Christmas
- 15:01Speaker 1: decorations as well as it is hard to do faux fall.
- 15:03Speaker 1: Like faux fall always looks faux.
- 15:05Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 15:06Speaker 1: But I agree. The market I thought looked really nice. Yeah.
- 15:09Speaker 1: I have a couple just little likes. I kind of
- 15:11Speaker 1: enjoyed the kookiness of Paul, particularly when he's on the
- 15:14Speaker 1: stationary bike in his helmet and goggles. Okay. I enjoyed
- 15:19Speaker 1: the opening sequence, the Brett Eldridge Mr. Christmas song with
- 15:22Speaker 1: the scrapbooked style lights. credits. Look, we're going to watch
- 15:26Speaker 1: a lot of these credits. Make it interesting. It's not
- 15:28Speaker 1: just text on the screen. I appreciated the extra effort
- 15:30Speaker 1: given there. And finally, I actually did enjoy Sophie's pitch
- 15:36Speaker 1: to the board. This was a hallmark moment that I
- 15:39Speaker 1: think made a lot of sense when she's talking about
- 15:42Speaker 1: she's clearly right for the job because she's detail-oriented. She's
- 15:45Speaker 1: very good at her job. She knows all of the rules.
- 15:48Speaker 1: But she has the heart to do it well because
- 15:51Speaker 1: the town is meaningful to her. And so I thought
- 15:54Speaker 1: That made sense. Sometimes these hallmark moments in quotes don't
- 15:59Speaker 1: make a lot of sense. This one worked. I agree
- 16:02Speaker 1: with that. I agree with it.
- 16:03Speaker 2: I mean, it felt like the tiniest bit crafty, but.
- 16:07Speaker 1: Yeah, of course. It worked.
- 16:09Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 16:09Speaker 1: Let's take a quick break and come back to talk
- 16:11Speaker 1: our wishes. All right, Wendy, what'd you wish for?
- 16:21Speaker 2: I have some wishes. First of all, this is like
- 16:25Speaker 2: one thing that I haven't talked about in a long time.
- 16:27Speaker 2: When the title of the movie doesn't make any sense
- 16:29Speaker 2: to me.
- 16:30Speaker 1: Yes. Mr. and Mrs. Christmas. Yeah, why couldn't it just
- 16:33Speaker 1: be Mr. Christmas? I guess because that doesn't suggest a
- 16:36Speaker 1: love connection. Yeah. But she's not Mrs. Christmas at the end. No,
- 16:42Speaker 1: they called her Mrs.
- 16:43Speaker 2: Claus, right?
- 16:44Speaker 1: She is Mrs. Claus. Yeah. She's not coming. He's Mr.
- 16:48Speaker 1: Christmas because this is his job. Yes.
- 16:51Speaker 2: Which I got another problem with. What are you doing
- 16:55Speaker 2: in the off season, dude? What's, you know, around here,
- 16:58Speaker 2: like it's the guys who hang up the Christmas lights
- 17:00Speaker 2: are also like window washers or, you know.
- 17:04Speaker 1: We had our trees trimmed this past weekend and the
- 17:06Speaker 1: guy was like, oh, I do Christmas lights too. And
- 17:08Speaker 1: I was like, oh.
- 17:09Speaker 2: Yeah. So tell me what Mr. Christmas Brendan Penny is doing.
- 17:13Speaker 1: Well, you know what's so funny is. You know, I
- 17:16Speaker 1: listen to Jeff Lewis Live, and he has a guy.
- 17:18Speaker 1: He has Mr. Christmas coming in to do– his name
- 17:21Speaker 1: is Mr. Christmas. That's what his business is called. Coming
- 17:24Speaker 1: in to do his house. And the guy also does Halloween.
- 17:27Speaker 1: He does, like, the whole pumpkin patch. You know, these
- 17:29Speaker 1: million-dollar homes in Hancock Park. People are paying thousands of
- 17:34Speaker 1: dollars to have someone come in and do that. But
- 17:36Speaker 1: I don't know what he does when it's not Halloween
- 17:37Speaker 1: or Christmas.
- 17:38Speaker 2: Do you think he makes enough money to sustain himself
- 17:41Speaker 2: throughout the year?
- 17:42Speaker 1: Well, let me tell you. The guy who used to
- 17:44Speaker 1: do our Christmas lights– He year-round worked for the cable company,
- 17:48Speaker 1: and then he would bank all of his vacation and
- 17:51Speaker 1: take off the month of November to put up Christmas lights. Yeah.
- 17:54Speaker 1: And he said he would make as much money putting
- 17:58Speaker 1: up Christmas lights as he did the entire year in
- 18:00Speaker 1: his other job.
- 18:02Speaker 2: How sad. He never got a vacation either because he
- 18:04Speaker 2: was putting up Christmas lights during his vacation days.
- 18:07Speaker 1: He has since retired. Good for him. But yeah, maybe
- 18:11Speaker 1: they do make enough money. I don't know. We're in
- 18:13Speaker 1: the wrong business, babe. Yeah, but do you really want
- 18:15Speaker 1: to do that?
- 18:16Speaker 2: Nope.
- 18:17Speaker 1: I don't want to decorate my own house. No.
- 18:19Speaker 2: I don't want to do anybody else's either. But back
- 18:21Speaker 2: to the title of this movie. What?
- 18:24Speaker 1: Why? Agree.
- 18:25Speaker 2: Stop putting synopsis and AI and asking for movie titles.
- 18:32Speaker 1: Right.
- 18:33Speaker 2: It doesn't have anything to do with it. I want
- 18:35Speaker 2: to talk about Jenna. I had a hard time with
- 18:37Speaker 2: the messaging that Jenna didn't need her dad anymore.
- 18:41Speaker 1: Oh, that's what you think the message is.
- 18:43Speaker 2: She went on. No, not the whole messaging. There was
- 18:47Speaker 2: a whole scene where she's like, I'm not a kid anymore.
- 18:50Speaker 2: I don't need you to fix these things.
- 18:52Speaker 1: No, no, no, no, no. Girl, you are a kid.
- 18:54Speaker 1: You were in middle school. You are a child.
- 18:57Speaker 2: You are not out here making your own decisions on everything.
- 19:02Speaker 2: This is what I'm saying that I don't think the
- 19:07Speaker 2: movie was written that well. in terms of like that
- 19:10Speaker 2: kind of stuff. Like he should have been like, no,
- 19:14Speaker 2: I'm sorry, you're 14. Maybe I am overstepping, but you
- 19:18Speaker 2: still need parental guidance in your life.
- 19:21Speaker 1: Yes. I do think there was a happy medium there.
- 19:24Speaker 1: Like the, I don't need you to fix this messaging
- 19:28Speaker 1: was important, but the, I'm not a kid anymore. You are. Right.
- 19:33Speaker 2: And I even thought for- It is. But I needed
- 19:37Speaker 2: him to be a parent in that moment and say, no,
- 19:40Speaker 2: I'm sorry. It's my way or the highway. You know,
- 19:45Speaker 2: cliche things parents say. I even thought for a moment,
- 19:48Speaker 2: I thought, hmm, what if he... would have been a
- 19:51Speaker 2: better story if Jenna was 18 and now she is
- 19:56Speaker 2: an adult, right?
- 19:57Speaker 1: A young adult.
- 19:59Speaker 2: And like, I don't need you to fix things anymore.
- 20:00Speaker 2: This is, that's a different movie though. And maybe one
- 20:04Speaker 2: that would have been more interesting, I thought. And then
- 20:07Speaker 2: Sophie still could have been a parent to a slightly
- 20:10Speaker 2: older child and then helped him, you know, guide him
- 20:15Speaker 2: through this transition. Because they even had this whole conversation
- 20:19Speaker 2: that you and I have just recently had, too, where
- 20:21Speaker 2: Brendan Penny was talking about 16 summers. I was like, oh,
- 20:25Speaker 2: at 16 now?
- 20:26Speaker 1: Yeah. When he said we only get 16 seasons with them,
- 20:29Speaker 1: I was like, what are you talking about? Yeah. Did
- 20:31Speaker 1: they launch them early in Canada? I don't know. I was...
- 20:37Speaker 1: irrationally mad during this scene. Also, I really... It's one
- 20:40Speaker 1: of my wishes. I wanted her... She doesn't push back
- 20:42Speaker 1: when he says that. And I wanted her to be like, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.
- 20:46Speaker 1: Because you and I, as we've talked about, have had
- 20:47Speaker 1: this discussion that you only get 16 or 18 or
- 20:52Speaker 1: whatever number you're picking to fully control. That's what parents...
- 20:58Speaker 1: get frustrated by is now i'm not fully in control
- 21:00Speaker 1: i don't get to manufacture the way holidays look because
- 21:04Speaker 1: now they're their own person and now we have to
- 21:07Speaker 1: figure out a way to make their adult life and
- 21:10Speaker 1: my life work together and i really wanted sophie to
- 21:12Speaker 1: be like no no no no you only get 16
- 21:16Speaker 1: where you're fully in charge but it is time for
- 21:18Speaker 1: you to start figuring out what the next phase looks
- 21:21Speaker 1: like because they don't poof from your life right beyond
- 21:24Speaker 1: that right i wish Someone had planned this market in August.
- 21:30Speaker 1: I was screaming at the television.
- 21:32Speaker 2: I know.
- 21:33Speaker 1: They are setting up the market, and he goes, we're
- 21:35Speaker 1: just about to go lock in the vendors. What? Yep.
- 21:38Speaker 1: We never actually see that happen, too. He makes all
- 21:41Speaker 1: these phone calls the night before to Gen Z it up, but...
- 21:45Speaker 1: We need to lock in the vendors? Why are we
- 21:47Speaker 1: putting out a single table if we have not locked
- 21:49Speaker 1: in the vendors?
- 21:50Speaker 2: Here's my other question. They never explicitly say what month
- 21:54Speaker 2: it is, but the rest of the office is decorated
- 21:57Speaker 2: for Christmas.
- 21:58Speaker 1: Yeah, and they only have a couple days to set up. Like,
- 22:02Speaker 1: it's got to be December.
- 22:03Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 22:04Speaker 1: Explain to me... Why they needed to cancel the parade.
- 22:08Speaker 1: Because wouldn't the costs of the parade already have been sunk?
- 22:11Speaker 1: Sunk costs already. Yep. So you might as well have it. Mm-hmm.
- 22:15Speaker 1: Now you're just cutting off your nose to spite your
- 22:17Speaker 1: face because you might as well have the parade because
- 22:19Speaker 1: all that money has been spent. That's right.
- 22:22Speaker 2: I got to tell you, one of my biggest wishes
- 22:24Speaker 2: is this other sea storyline, basically, of the budget and
- 22:31Speaker 2: the city or whatever.
- 22:34Speaker 1: Yeah. I'm having a hard time caring. I don't care. Yeah, okay.
- 22:41Speaker 1: I don't care. It's not so much like don't care.
- 22:42Speaker 2: You wrote a Christmas movie about a budget?
- 22:46Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Okay, fair enough. Come on, let's
- 22:48Speaker 1: take all the other stuff away.
- 22:49Speaker 2: It is a Christmas holiday movie opening weekend. It is
- 22:53Speaker 2: about a budget. It is about blowing a budget. It
- 22:57Speaker 2: is so effing stupid.
- 23:00Speaker 1: I am sorry. I think that's 100% fair. The other
- 23:04Speaker 1: thing is, though... I just find it hard to believe
- 23:07Speaker 1: that this man is such a buffoon. He doesn't know
- 23:10Speaker 1: the difference between the annual budget and an events budget.
- 23:13Speaker 1: He's like, I just looked at these numbers and I
- 23:15Speaker 1: didn't spend all this money. He's running his own business.
- 23:21Speaker 1: We don't see any other employees. She's so detail-oriented that
- 23:25Speaker 1: she's not like, be creative. As soon as he called her,
- 23:30Speaker 1: I was like, that's going to be the conflict. That's
- 23:32Speaker 1: going to be the problem right there. I don't know
- 23:34Speaker 1: how it's going to, but something's going to happen. So
- 23:37Speaker 1: I didn't like that either. I just– all of the logistics,
- 23:42Speaker 1: everything was happening too last minute. They hired this man
- 23:44Speaker 1: to move here in December to run this. I find
- 23:47Speaker 1: it very hard to believe that he was hired from
- 23:50Speaker 1: out of town to move to another state to run
- 23:54Speaker 1: this entire event. It just feels like this could have
- 23:56Speaker 1: all been done in-house. Also, at the very beginning of
- 24:00Speaker 1: the movie, Paul hands him this box. Made by his grandfather. Oh, yes. Yes, yes.
- 24:04Speaker 1: That absolutely has to be used. They step on it,
- 24:08Speaker 1: and then it's never to be seen again. You're right.
- 24:10Speaker 1: How about no other– he says, don't make any more mistakes.
- 24:13Speaker 1: But there's no, like, let me repair the box for you.
- 24:17Speaker 2: Do you think that they were trying to set up
- 24:20Speaker 2: there in that moment that, like, he's kind of a
- 24:23Speaker 2: mess it up sort of dude? You know, like he
- 24:26Speaker 2: got locked out of his car, and then he got
- 24:28Speaker 2: locked out of the office, and then he broke the box.
- 24:30Speaker 1: But he's not even the one who breaks the box.
- 24:32Speaker 1: I know, but it's just... He should have been on
- 24:34Speaker 1: the floor underneath the ladder.
- 24:36Speaker 2: Fine, but it's just like piling on top, like.
- 24:39Speaker 1: Perhaps.
- 24:40Speaker 2: Look, this guy would not get hired again with how
- 24:42Speaker 2: many mistakes he made. I did love his reaction when
- 24:44Speaker 2: he realizes he's lost his car. It's the best acting
- 24:47Speaker 2: moment of the movie. The instant look on his face
- 24:50Speaker 2: when he realizes that he's locked his keys into his car.
- 24:53Speaker 1: It was great. It was great. It borders hijinks for me.
- 24:58Speaker 1: It's frustrating.
- 24:59Speaker 2: This guy is not that much of a buffoon.
- 25:02Speaker 1: If he's Mr.
- 25:03Speaker 2: Christmas, who has this great business, you're not making that
- 25:07Speaker 2: many mistakes.
- 25:09Speaker 1: Yeah, I agree. And I just don't think Mr. Christmas
- 25:14Speaker 1: would lose all of the magic of the Christmas market.
- 25:18Speaker 1: I think there's something in him that would be like, hey,
- 25:21Speaker 1: let's have a couple new additions, but it doesn't need
- 25:23Speaker 1: to be we up in the club.
- 25:25Speaker 2: We up in the club is right. Were you super overstimulated,
- 25:29Speaker 2: like pinball machines going off and like all this stuff?
- 25:32Speaker 2: And then I thought for a second, they've gathered in
- 25:35Speaker 2: this like community center, right?
- 25:38Speaker 1: And he's like, hey, everybody, hey, come in.
- 25:40Speaker 2: Why are you the face of the opening night of
- 25:44Speaker 2: Christmas market?
- 25:45Speaker 1: You're technically a vendor, dude. Just run in the background.
- 25:48Speaker 1: Nobody should know who you are. Yeah.
- 25:50Speaker 2: It's like a wedding planner. Your wedding planner is not like, hey, everybody,
- 25:53Speaker 2: let's No, they're.
- 25:55Speaker 1: Not the emcee of the event. Exactly. Well, let's talk
- 26:00Speaker 1: did you see that. Unless you have more wishes. No. Okay.
- 26:03Speaker 2: I don't have a ton of did you see that's.
- 26:05Speaker 2: I already talked about the Christmas decorating budget. I like
- 26:08Speaker 2: the inflatables. I liked. I actually liked when he made
- 26:13Speaker 2: all the kids come out into the front. His two
- 26:15Speaker 2: children to see them plug it.
- 26:17Speaker 1: In and then it. Very National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation. Kills
- 26:22Speaker 1: the entire neighborhood. Yep. Yeah.
- 26:24Speaker 2: But again, there he goes messing it up, trying to
- 26:26Speaker 2: drown it. I literally was watching this movie. I'm like,
- 26:29Speaker 2: you're doing too much. Reel it in, dude.
- 26:32Speaker 1: Reel it in.
- 26:34Speaker 2: I'm going to let you talk about Peter Benson in
- 26:36Speaker 2: a second. The only other did you see that I
- 26:38Speaker 2: had that Jenna has a really cute barn jacket. If
- 26:40Speaker 2: you guys don't know what a barn jacket is. Oh, yeah.
- 26:43Speaker 2: It's like a it's kind of a straight boxy jacket
- 26:47Speaker 2: with a collar that's either like darker or a different
- 26:51Speaker 2: material than the rest of it it was real cute
- 26:53Speaker 2: it was not real on trend.
- 26:55Speaker 1: It was when she was trying on all those jackets
- 26:56Speaker 1: and she does like the denim jacket and the sweatshirt
- 26:58Speaker 1: and then she reaches for the barn jacket i was
- 26:59Speaker 1: like yeah that's the one yeah yeah that's the one
- 27:01Speaker 1: too um let's talk about peter benson i had not
- 27:04Speaker 1: read the news and notes for this movie prior to
- 27:07Speaker 1: watching it i did not know who directed this movie
- 27:11Speaker 1: and that's why i'm so proud of myself when we
- 27:13Speaker 1: hear the offstage announcer announce clover clover Who do you
- 27:18Speaker 1: think that's supposed to be? I don't know, but they
- 27:21Speaker 1: started singing Christmas songs. I was like, GTFO. I know.
- 27:24Speaker 1: I was like, that's a miss. You don't hire, yeah,
- 27:26Speaker 1: you don't hire Clover to sing. Let him sing his hits. Anyway,
- 27:29Speaker 1: I was like, I think that's Peter Benson. Did Peter
- 27:31Speaker 1: Benson direct this movie? I rewound it, listened to it,
- 27:34Speaker 1: rewound it.
- 27:35Speaker 2: Wow.
- 27:35Speaker 1: I went back, listened to it again, and was like,
- 27:38Speaker 1: that's 100% Peter Benson. And then looked it up.
- 27:42Speaker 2: Wait, but you don't know for certain 100% that's his voice.
- 27:46Speaker 1: That is correct. I don't know for certain 100%. Please
- 27:48Speaker 1: message him. Is he on socials?
- 27:51Speaker 2: He can be hit or miss, right? Yes. What I
- 27:54Speaker 2: was disappointed in is we have loved to say, Peter Benson,
- 28:00Speaker 2: what are you doing here? But he hasn't shown up
- 28:02Speaker 2: in his last couple movies.
- 28:04Speaker 1: And so... Yeah. Is Peter Benson playing with us right now?
- 28:08Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 28:09Speaker 2: I mean, I think we're too disappointed Peter Benson fans.
- 28:14Speaker 1: Because I was waiting.
- 28:15Speaker 2: They show, they're at like, Sophie and Taylor go out
- 28:20Speaker 2: to eat and she goes, gets roasted chestnuts. Why is
- 28:23Speaker 2: Peter Benson not roasting the chestnuts?
- 28:25Speaker 1: Yeah. Right? I just messaged, just watch Mr. and Mrs. Christmas.
- 28:29Speaker 1: I'm going to need you to confirm that was your
- 28:31Speaker 1: voice introducing Clover. We'll see what he says. I'm going
- 28:34Speaker 1: to have to bleep this, but the... trinket teller who
- 28:36Speaker 1: interrupts their almost kiss. Yeah. I cannot believe they then
- 28:41Speaker 1: went on to buy something from her because that's not
- 28:44Speaker 1: going to, what are you doing? Yeah. What are you doing? Yeah.
- 28:47Speaker 2: Would you ever like see somebody almost kissing and be like.
- 28:50Speaker 1: Excuse me? Merry Christmas. No.
- 28:53Speaker 2: Come buy one of my wares.
- 28:56Speaker 1: You mentioned Jenna's barn jacket. Lily is wearing sweatpants at
- 29:01Speaker 1: one point at school and then at the carnival, like
- 29:03Speaker 1: she has A sweater and, like, a big, like, Sherpa's
- 29:07Speaker 1: not the word, but it's that, like, fuzzy. Mm-hmm. Maybe
- 29:10Speaker 1: it is Sherpa long jacket. And she has sweatpants on underneath.
- 29:14Speaker 1: It's real cute. Finally, the mistletoe. Actually, I have two more.
- 29:17Speaker 1: The mistletoe that they kiss under has white berries. Thank
- 29:20Speaker 1: you very much. Oh, finally. Megan has seen in her.
- 29:23Speaker 1: Mistletoe accuracy. And speaking of that kiss, you know, they...
- 29:28Speaker 1: We have that tight shot of them kissing under the
- 29:30Speaker 1: mistletoe and then it pulls back and they climb into
- 29:33Speaker 1: the Ferris wheel and the Ferris wheel like takes them around.
- 29:37Speaker 1: Were they just standing at the entrance to the Ferris wheel?
- 29:39Speaker 1: that entire time having that moment with what I have
- 29:42Speaker 1: to assume is a line of people waiting for their
- 29:44Speaker 1: turn to board the Ferris wheel while they're having their
- 29:46Speaker 1: final kiss you're just holding up the line folks.
- 29:49Speaker 2: Maybe maybe did you see how stiff Pascal Hutton was
- 29:54Speaker 2: like when Merry Christmas Pineway Merry Christmas, Pine Way.
- 30:01Speaker 1: Oh, my. Like four times.
- 30:03Speaker 2: Look, I love Pascal Hutton. I think she's so adorable
- 30:08Speaker 2: as Nellie. They let her run with Nellie.
- 30:11Speaker 1: Yeah, I love Nellie.
- 30:11Speaker 2: Here was way too restrained for me.
- 30:13Speaker 1: Mm-hmm. So are you ready to rate this one? Yes.
- 30:19Speaker 2: I originally gave it three stars, but I think it's
- 30:21Speaker 2: a 2.75 star.
- 30:22Speaker 1: Oh, my goodness. It went down. I gave this three
- 30:25Speaker 1: and a half stars. I thought logistically the story was
- 30:28Speaker 1: a mess. Emotionally, some of these moments hit for me.
- 30:31Speaker 1: I'm wondering, does this feel like a Christmas movie to you? No.
- 30:38Speaker 2: And in fact, it only feels Christmas because there's so
- 30:41Speaker 2: much Christmas decor in it.
- 30:43Speaker 1: Yes.
- 30:44Speaker 2: But in fact, it's the second movie of the weekend
- 30:47Speaker 2: that's got large scenes.
- 30:49Speaker 1: Parenting themes to it. So, yes, I was watching this. Obviously,
- 30:54Speaker 1: it is Christmassy in tone. It's Christmas events happening that
- 31:00Speaker 1: this is centered around. But the story is not really
- 31:02Speaker 1: about Christmas. I haven't decided whether there's any value attached
- 31:09Speaker 1: to that. Like, is that a good thing or a
- 31:10Speaker 1: bad thing? Because I don't need every story to be
- 31:13Speaker 1: about Christmas. We have 34 movies. I don't need to
- 31:16Speaker 1: celebrate the season 34 times. Yeah. It's kind of okay
- 31:20Speaker 1: with me that this just happens to be taking place
- 31:23Speaker 1: during the holiday season with there's plenty of Christmas happening around. Yeah.
- 31:29Speaker 1: The Christmas is just kind of incidental to the story,
- 31:33Speaker 1: but it's not necessarily driving the story. I agree. I agree.
- 31:37Speaker 2: But you know what is funny, and I know I've
- 31:39Speaker 2: talked about it before, is like, oh, I like relatable stories.
- 31:42Speaker 2: This was just, it was not Christmas, it was not
- 31:45Speaker 2: like Christmas magic enough for me.
- 31:47Speaker 1: I would agree. There's not a lot of Christmas magic.
- 31:49Speaker 2: Especially opening weekend and being a second movie of the
- 31:53Speaker 2: weekend that it has these other larger themes that are
- 31:57Speaker 2: really not related to Christmas.
- 31:59Speaker 1: Was it too relatable? Is it too much like, I
- 32:02Speaker 1: see myself in this.
- 32:04Speaker 2: No, because– And I don't like it? No, because that's
- 32:06Speaker 2: what I am looking for. I'm always looking for some
- 32:11Speaker 2: sort of through line where the movie feels more special
- 32:15Speaker 2: to me because I related to it.
- 32:17Speaker 1: Right.
- 32:18Speaker 2: And there was some moments of that in this movie,
- 32:22Speaker 2: but I just found it weird that we have two
- 32:28Speaker 2: movies opening weekend– They're Hallmark mystery and misery movies.
- 32:33Speaker 1: That's what these are. Two of them in one weekend.
- 32:37Speaker 1: Two of them in one weekend.
- 32:39Speaker 2: So I need whoever does programming to really step back
- 32:44Speaker 2: and look at.
- 32:46Speaker 1: The tone.
- 32:47Speaker 2: The tone, the themes of the movies, and puzzle it
- 32:51Speaker 2: together where it's more balanced.
- 32:55Speaker 1: I like that idea. A lot.
- 32:57Speaker 2: And I don't think they do that because I think
- 32:59Speaker 2: they're just... There's so many movies coming out in one
- 33:03Speaker 2: short season for them that they're like, oh, it's done.
- 33:07Speaker 1: Okay, great. It's going to go here.
- 33:08Speaker 2: Here.
- 33:09Speaker 1: This gets slotted here. I think, yes. I think there's
- 33:11Speaker 1: an element of– because we know some of these movies
- 33:13Speaker 1: are just wrapping. Like I just saw Allie Liebert posting,
- 33:16Speaker 1: you know, the movie she's directing. It's– October 12th today
- 33:21Speaker 1: as we're recording this and she's just wrapping. So I
- 33:23Speaker 1: think there is an element of, of course, those are
- 33:25Speaker 1: going to come out later. And I also think there's
- 33:27Speaker 1: some reverse engineering of, hey, we've got these maybe five
- 33:31Speaker 1: or six movies that we know are going to be
- 33:33Speaker 1: big draws. So we're going to space those out. And
- 33:36Speaker 1: then we kind of just puzzle everything else in around
- 33:40Speaker 1: all of that.
- 33:41Speaker 2: My other complaint is that, you know, I don't, I
- 33:44Speaker 2: think we all can agree that we want movies that
- 33:46Speaker 2: stay with us, right?
- 33:48Speaker 1: Sure.
- 33:48Speaker 2: I'm not going to remember this movie at the end
- 33:50Speaker 2: of October.
- 33:51Speaker 1: I don't disagree. You know?
- 33:52Speaker 2: And that to me feels like, why are we doing
- 33:55Speaker 2: it then?
- 33:56Speaker 1: Again, less is more. That's where I'm at. Opening weekend. Well,
- 34:02Speaker 1: thank you for listening to this episode of Girls Gone Hallmark.
