- 0:01Dr. Bob Lawrence: Hello, and welcome to the Dallas School of Music Minute.
- 0:05Dr. Bob Lawrence: I'm Dr.
- 0:06Dr. Bob Lawrence: Bob Lawrence, Director of the Dallas School of Music.
- 0:09Dr. Bob Lawrence: Today I'd like to talk about musical literacy.
- 0:14Dr. Bob Lawrence: When students first begin learning to read music, it's easy to wonder if all those notes, rhythms, and symbols are really worth the effort.
- 0:26Dr. Bob Lawrence: The answer is simple.
- 0:28Dr. Bob Lawrence: Absolutely.
- 0:29Dr. Bob Lawrence: Learning to read music is much like learning to read a book.
- 0:33Dr. Bob Lawrence: At first, every symbol requires careful thought.
- 0:38Dr. Bob Lawrence: Progress feels slow.
- 0:41Dr. Bob Lawrence: But with time and practice, those symbols begin to tell a story.
- 0:48Dr. Bob Lawrence: At the Dallas School of Music, we view musical literacy as one of the most valuable gifts we can give a student.
- 0:56Dr. Bob Lawrence: Because reading music creates independence.
- 1:01Dr. Bob Lawrence: It allows students to explore new repertoire with confidence, to understand what the composer intended, and to communicate with musicians everywhere through a shared musical language.
- 1:17Dr. Bob Lawrence: More importantly, musical literacy creates opportunity.
- 1:22Dr. Bob Lawrence: Students are no longer limited to what they can memorize or imitate.
- 1:28Dr. Bob Lawrence: They can continue learning, discovering, and making music for the rest of their lives.
- 1:36Dr. Bob Lawrence: That's why we teach reading as more than a technical skill.
- 1:42Dr. Bob Lawrence: We teach it as a lifelong pathway to musical understanding.
- 1:47Dr. Bob Lawrence: Because music is far richer when students are able to read its language for themselves.
- 1:55Dr. Bob Lawrence: Thanks for spending a minute with me today.
- 1:58Dr. Bob Lawrence: Until next time, enjoy the journey as you continue to discover, learn, and play.
