- 0:00Speaker 1: Area.
- 0:01Speaker 2: Doctor Josh Davis is here. He is a veterinarian and
- 0:05Speaker 2: he can answer questions about your puppies and your kiddies
- 0:09Speaker 2: if you if your animals are having any ailments or
- 0:12Speaker 2: odd behaviors, or maybe they're just not behaving or looking
- 0:18Speaker 2: at your cross eyed whatever it is.
- 0:20Speaker 1: So I have questioned doctor Davis. The first question is
- 0:23Speaker 1: from Gina.
- 0:25Speaker 2: Where are you calling from?
- 0:26Speaker 3: Coming from Salt Lake City. My my pups are Oakley
- 0:30Speaker 3: and Riley, and they both have runny noses and are
- 0:36Speaker 3: sneezing like a lot.
- 0:38Speaker 2: Like Now, you've had the older dog for quite some time, yes,
- 0:43Speaker 2: and never done this before.
- 0:45Speaker 3: No, And that's why I don't think it's allergies, because
- 0:48Speaker 3: she's had allergies before where she's like got you know,
- 0:50Speaker 3: itchy feed and itchy ears and stuff this.
- 0:54Speaker 2: I like, can they get a cold?
- 0:56Speaker 3: It looks like a cold to me because it's a
- 0:59Speaker 3: runny nose and easy.
- 1:01Speaker 4: It can be a combination of things, and for both
- 1:04Speaker 4: dogs to have it, maybe there's a contagious component if
- 1:07Speaker 4: they've been boarded or around other dogs or anything like that.
- 1:10Speaker 5: Sometimes they can pick stuff.
- 1:11Speaker 4: Up, but if it's just sneezing and the discharge is clear,
- 1:15Speaker 4: like it's not gross snotty nose or anything like that,
- 1:18Speaker 4: and they're acting normal. We usually don't get too worried
- 1:21Speaker 4: about that because right now our air quality isn't very good.
- 1:25Speaker 4: It's very hot. There's been fires and things like that.
- 1:28Speaker 4: So even little things like that, you'll you know, people
- 1:30Speaker 4: will come in and we'll check them out.
- 1:32Speaker 5: Everything seems fine, and we just let it run its course.
- 1:34Speaker 3: Most of the time, they're eating and playing and everything
- 1:36Speaker 3: else seems fine.
- 1:37Speaker 5: So you don't think I need to do anything.
- 1:39Speaker 2: It's not covid, is it.
- 1:40Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:41Speaker 4: If you're starting to get one nostril and it's like
- 1:43Speaker 4: green or yellow, gunky snot, then we worry about things
- 1:47Speaker 4: foxtail weeds so they can inhale those, and that can
- 1:50Speaker 4: be a problem. Bad teeth can actually cause nasel issues.
- 1:54Speaker 5: Unfortunately.
- 1:55Speaker 4: Sometimes tumors or other things can grow. And they're they're
- 1:57Speaker 4: both they're both doing it and they're both happy and
- 2:00Speaker 4: it's clear.
- 2:00Speaker 5: I don't worry too much.
- 2:03Speaker 2: Just make sure they have clean linen handkerchiefs, they.
- 2:07Speaker 1: Have little monogram.
- 2:08Speaker 2: I got a foxtail in my nose once when I
- 2:10Speaker 2: was a kid. It was just awful. It's terrible.
- 2:12Speaker 4: Yeah, that's what we do all summers, pulling those out
- 2:15Speaker 4: everywhere you can think of.
- 2:16Speaker 1: Yeah, all right, well let's go to Holly.
- 2:19Speaker 2: Hi, Holly, where are you calling from?
- 2:21Speaker 6: Hi?
- 2:22Speaker 7: I am calling from Salt Lakes.
- 2:24Speaker 2: And what's your Your cat is a cat or dog?
- 2:27Speaker 2: A dog?
- 2:28Speaker 6: I have? I have two cata Hula mixes.
- 2:31Speaker 7: Charri and Mokey.
- 2:33Speaker 2: Okay, and what is the mix? What is that?
- 2:39Speaker 6: They're like a hunting dog from New Orleans, but to
- 2:42Speaker 6: be in the swamps and hunt wild boar.
- 2:44Speaker 2: Okay, we're not very cool looking at dogs.
- 2:46Speaker 4: They're like leopard print almost like, yeah, leopard dog.
- 2:51Speaker 2: How do you spell that? I'll just look up leopard dog?
- 2:53Speaker 1: Yeah, all right, what's your question?
- 2:57Speaker 7: It's just a general question. My dogs are good.
- 2:59Speaker 6: But someone years ago once told me if you.
- 3:02Speaker 7: Can't see the dog's ribs, that's fat and not muscle.
- 3:07Speaker 6: So if you can't see your dogs ribs, then they're overweight.
- 3:10Speaker 8: Or they're fat.
- 3:11Speaker 7: That shouldn't be there.
- 3:12Speaker 9: Is that accurate?
- 3:13Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 3:14Speaker 4: Probably what and maybe it wasn't explained red or just
- 3:18Speaker 4: depending on who you're talking to. So what we look
- 3:20Speaker 4: at in dogs and cats is called body condition scoring.
- 3:24Speaker 4: So weight is a piece of that, but more important
- 3:27Speaker 4: is the body condition. And so typically it's a five
- 3:30Speaker 4: or nine point scale. So let's say it's a nine
- 3:32Speaker 4: point scale. You want to be at a five, which
- 3:34Speaker 4: is right in the middle. That's considered ideal. And when
- 3:36Speaker 4: you're looking at that, so you want to be able
- 3:39Speaker 4: to feel between their ribs without pushing through a thick
- 3:43Speaker 4: layer of fat. So you don't necessarily need to see
- 3:46Speaker 4: their ribs, but you don't want, you know, an inch
- 3:47Speaker 4: of fat between why I'm in drop pushing through that
- 3:50Speaker 4: and feeling between the ribs. And then in dogs, also
- 3:54Speaker 4: above their tail, they'll start to get a little dimple there.
- 3:57Speaker 4: I call it a butt dimple. But that's that's another
- 4:00Speaker 4: place they store fat. And so if they get a
- 4:02Speaker 4: dimple or you really got to push in there to
- 4:04Speaker 4: feel their ribs, or they don't have that nice hourglass
- 4:06Speaker 4: from the top, they are probably overweight or obese. Depending
- 4:10Speaker 4: and cats are pretty similar except they get it's it's
- 4:13Speaker 4: called an apron.
- 4:14Speaker 5: It's their little fat, swingy belly.
- 4:16Speaker 4: So we'll running around and my really has a sway
- 4:18Speaker 4: inside to side.
- 4:19Speaker 5: Then they're probably overweight too.
- 4:21Speaker 2: Yeah, he can still flatten himself out and get under
- 4:24Speaker 2: the couch though.
- 4:25Speaker 4: Yeah, so you can look up just body condition scoring
- 4:28Speaker 4: for dogs online and you can you can assess that
- 4:31Speaker 4: yourself pretty easily.
- 4:32Speaker 5: It never hurts have your vet do it, because you know,
- 4:34Speaker 5: we do it all day every day.
- 4:35Speaker 2: But all right, thanks.
- 4:36Speaker 9: Ollie, Okay, thanks, that was very helpful.
- 4:39Speaker 2: See you later describing the cat and all he could
- 4:42Speaker 2: think of was my aunt Merle's arms.
- 4:44Speaker 5: Yeah, kind of the same. Yeah, same concept.
- 4:47Speaker 2: But we're going to talk to Chad now, Chad here, Hi, Chad? Hell, yeah,
- 4:52Speaker 2: where are you calling from, Chad? Okay, and what's your
- 4:57Speaker 2: cat's name and what's the problem.
- 5:00Speaker 8: Her name is Hazel. She's about ten years old, and
- 5:03Speaker 8: for the past couple of months, she's just started sneezing.
- 5:06Speaker 8: She's never had this issue before, and we also have
- 5:08Speaker 8: another cat he's never had an issue, but she just
- 5:12Speaker 8: keeps sneezing. That's just I mean, it's kind of funny
- 5:13Speaker 8: to hear sneeze. But we're not sure what's going on.
- 5:17Speaker 4: Okay, Yeah, it's kind of like we were talking about
- 5:20Speaker 4: the beginning for you know, an older pet. We definitely
- 5:23Speaker 4: want to make sure we're ruling out some things that
- 5:25Speaker 4: could be causing that. So with cats, especially if they
- 5:29Speaker 4: haven't had dental care or they've got more advanced dental disease,
- 5:33Speaker 4: there are some situations where they can get enough disease
- 5:36Speaker 4: that it will actually affect their sinuses and so they
- 5:38Speaker 4: can get snotty noses from bad teeth. Also, if there
- 5:42Speaker 4: are issues, you know, air quality again is an issue,
- 5:44Speaker 4: so sometimes that plays a factor. And then cats, especially
- 5:48Speaker 4: older cats, they there are times where they can get
- 5:52Speaker 4: certain tumors and things like that as well. So it's probably,
- 5:56Speaker 4: you know, probably nothing that's big, but I think you
- 5:59Speaker 4: got to check and rule out those other things before
- 6:02Speaker 4: you just you know, let it ride.
- 6:04Speaker 2: You know, a check and see, check, check and see
- 6:06Speaker 2: if Hazel's doing snuff that much.
- 6:09Speaker 4: And even litter box like really dusty litters can cause
- 6:12Speaker 4: cats to have respiratory issues if he went in the
- 6:15Speaker 4: home smokes or anything like that.
- 6:17Speaker 5: So you know, there's simple things, but then there's less
- 6:20Speaker 5: simple things too, just.
- 6:21Speaker 2: Looking around, see if there are any empty school cans.
- 6:23Speaker 8: Okay, right, right, let's go to cats are known snuff users.
- 6:32Speaker 2: Leah, Leah, good morning, good morning. What your you're welcome.
- 6:37Speaker 2: What's your dog's name? Is it a dog?
- 6:40Speaker 6: Her name is Roxy, Roxy.
- 6:42Speaker 2: And okay, and what's the problem.
- 6:45Speaker 6: Roxy has occasionally had seasonal allergies and I've been able
- 6:49Speaker 6: to manage it with just a little bit of benadryl
- 6:51Speaker 6: and and some extra baths and stuff. But this year
- 6:54Speaker 6: seems extra. It'sy to the point that she's rubbing on everything,
- 6:58Speaker 6: scratching with her teeth and her feet and everything you
- 7:02Speaker 6: can possibly scratch. With any suggestion that you might have
- 7:06Speaker 6: to help me keep her more comfortable.
- 7:09Speaker 4: Yeah, absolutely, it sounds like you're doing a couple of
- 7:11Speaker 4: things already. Antihistamines like benadryl. In general, anahistamines aren't super
- 7:17Speaker 4: effective in dogs or cats really like they're in people.
- 7:21Speaker 4: So benadryla might get some soothing just because it makes
- 7:23Speaker 4: them tired sometimes, but probably doesn't help too much. And
- 7:26Speaker 4: then regular bathing, and if you have a breed that
- 7:30Speaker 4: you're willing to keep the hair short, that can be
- 7:33Speaker 4: really helpful because they get all the allergens on their
- 7:36Speaker 4: skin and then that's why they have a response to it.
- 7:38Speaker 4: And often it's so many things it's hard to single
- 7:40Speaker 4: out what it is. So we're treating symptomatically. But if
- 7:44Speaker 4: they're to the point where they are constantly itchy and
- 7:46Speaker 4: tearing themselves up. You probably need some medical help with
- 7:51Speaker 4: that too, and there are injectable things, there's oral medications
- 7:56Speaker 4: that can really help with that, because they'll start to
- 7:58Speaker 4: really self harm and get bad skin infections. It can
- 8:01Speaker 4: be painful, and then they don't sleep, You don't sleep,
- 8:04Speaker 4: and nobody's happy.
- 8:05Speaker 2: Does the dog? Does the dog have long hair or
- 8:08Speaker 2: short hair?
- 8:09Speaker 6: I was going to ask that she has that really
- 8:11Speaker 6: downy undercoat and I've been brushing her and she's shedding
- 8:15Speaker 6: a ton right now. Is it safe to shave a
- 8:18Speaker 6: dog that has that downy undercoat?
- 8:21Speaker 5: I mean it's safe.
- 8:22Speaker 4: The risk you take with some breathe is that the
- 8:25Speaker 4: hair may not grow back how you started, and sometimes
- 8:29Speaker 4: that is the trade off to manage their skin to
- 8:33Speaker 4: do that as well. So you know, if you're brushing
- 8:35Speaker 4: a lot, bathing regularly, making sure you're getting really dry
- 8:38Speaker 4: after bathing, you may not have to go to that extreme.
- 8:41Speaker 4: But they make pet they make shirts that can help
- 8:44Speaker 4: kind of keep the stuff off of them too, So
- 8:47Speaker 4: there's a million ways. And you know, if you can
- 8:50Speaker 4: get a consult with your vet, because usually these kind
- 8:53Speaker 4: of appointments take thirty minutes to an hour to go
- 8:55Speaker 4: through and ask a lot of questions, get a lot
- 8:57Speaker 4: of history. So skin is rarely easy. It's often multi visits,
- 9:02Speaker 4: multi steps to get there.
- 9:03Speaker 2: All right, right there you go, thank you, thank you?
- 9:06Speaker 1: Yeah, all right, let's go to Laura.
- 9:09Speaker 2: Hi, Laura, where are you calling from? Hello?
- 9:14Speaker 9: Sandy?
- 9:15Speaker 2: Sandy? And you have a dog named what.
- 9:19Speaker 9: My dog's name is Axel? Okay, and he's a great
- 9:24Speaker 9: is about five years old. So we're getting at there.
- 9:26Speaker 7: First sight.
- 9:27Speaker 9: We've noticed in the past couple of weeks been lensing,
- 9:30Speaker 9: so we checked everything.
- 9:31Speaker 2: Okay.
- 9:32Speaker 9: I noticed the other day his pads appear to be
- 9:34Speaker 9: swollen on that foot, and I'm kind of wondering if
- 9:36Speaker 9: there's anything. I mean, it's soaking EPs, some salt or.
- 9:40Speaker 2: Like those foxtails we were talking about.
- 9:42Speaker 5: Could yeah, could be If it's just the foot.
- 9:45Speaker 9: That definitely between those we are not seeing any Okay, good.
- 9:49Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 9:49Speaker 4: Usually foxtails you'll see a draining wound or a hole
- 9:52Speaker 4: and they'll be licking at it and swollen. Which leg
- 9:56Speaker 4: is it a front leg or back league? It is
- 9:58Speaker 4: a front the front league, okay, because also the feet
- 10:02Speaker 4: and paus can get swollen. Because there's a problem higher
- 10:05Speaker 4: up in the limb and so that swelling just gravity,
- 10:07Speaker 4: you'll take it downhill down to their foot there. So
- 10:10Speaker 4: with those giant breeds, you know, five isn't super old,
- 10:14Speaker 4: but it's it's not super young for them either, and
- 10:17Speaker 4: so arthritis can be an issue. Elbows and shoulders, even
- 10:20Speaker 4: their wrists can be an issue. So it might be
- 10:23Speaker 4: good just because of your breed status to get that
- 10:26Speaker 4: looked at and potentially even taking some giving them some sedation,
- 10:30Speaker 4: taking some X rays to assess those joints. Because they
- 10:33Speaker 4: also can get cancer younger than some dogs, and so
- 10:37Speaker 4: sometimes cancer just starts as a subtle limp and next
- 10:40Speaker 4: thing you know, they can't even use their legs. So
- 10:42Speaker 4: it could be it could be something, Yeah for sure,
- 10:46Speaker 4: not just scary yet, but it's worth.
- 10:47Speaker 5: Checking it out.
- 10:48Speaker 2: Yeah right, okay, thank you, thanks Laura.
- 10:53Speaker 1: Let's go to Jill.
- 10:55Speaker 2: Hello, Jill, where are you calling from?
- 10:58Speaker 7: I'm in Holiday and you have a dog.
- 11:01Speaker 2: What's what's the name of the animal?
- 11:05Speaker 7: His name is Bannit. He's a blue healer and.
- 11:10Speaker 2: You put a hurt you put a neckerchief around him
- 11:12Speaker 2: his neck, don't you know.
- 11:15Speaker 10: I do not do that.
- 11:16Speaker 2: He came with the name okay okay i uh.
- 11:20Speaker 7: I was prescribed trasdone for him for anxiety for fireworks
- 11:26Speaker 7: and it works. Well, it's one hundred milligram. But what
- 11:29Speaker 7: I was wondering, I also have a trasodone prescription for
- 11:34Speaker 7: sleep that I was prescribed by my doctor, which is
- 11:36Speaker 7: also one hundred milligrams. Is it the same? Can I.
- 11:43Speaker 2: Now which one is cheaper?
- 11:45Speaker 9: Yeah?
- 11:45Speaker 4: Well, often the human stuff is cheaper because of insurance
- 11:48Speaker 4: and all that. But they should be the same drug
- 11:51Speaker 4: if the milligrams the same, you know, So it's kind
- 11:54Speaker 4: of all of those things.
- 11:54Speaker 5: I can't tell you to do it, but there they
- 11:58Speaker 5: should be equivalent.
- 12:00Speaker 4: The only thing you have to watch out for is
- 12:01Speaker 4: anything that says extended release. Extended release is not the same.
- 12:06Speaker 4: So even if the milligrams the same, it's not the same,
- 12:09Speaker 4: So just be careful with that. And then for pets,
- 12:11Speaker 4: anything with you know, appills, you don't have to worries much,
- 12:14Speaker 4: but anything with xylotol it's an artificial sweetener and that
- 12:17Speaker 4: is very harmful to pets too, So never, you know, never,
- 12:21Speaker 4: you know, watch out for stuff like that.
- 12:22Speaker 2: So so if all things being equal, use the cheaper
- 12:25Speaker 2: one should.
- 12:27Speaker 5: Be okay, but again I can't tell you without seeing
- 12:29Speaker 5: the label.
- 12:29Speaker 8: All right, sure, I understand, Okay, thanks, thank you.
- 12:33Speaker 1: All right, time for one more question.
- 12:36Speaker 2: Justin, Justin, Oh, Justin, And what's your dog's name? His
- 12:42Speaker 2: name is Blue Blue, And what's the question book, Yeah,
- 12:45Speaker 2: what's the question?
- 12:48Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 12:48Speaker 10: So he is a golden doodle. He's about three years
- 12:51Speaker 10: old and as the last seven months or so, we'll
- 12:55Speaker 10: take into the dog park and as soon as we
- 12:57Speaker 10: let a man, he starts yelling at other dogs start
- 13:01Speaker 10: and take nibbles at them. My nephew comes over and
- 13:04Speaker 10: brings over his lavador. As soon as he watch it,
- 13:06Speaker 10: already attacks them. And we have no idea why because
- 13:09Speaker 10: the home sweetest can be a little airheaded, but sweet
- 13:12Speaker 10: as can be. But when he gets around other dogs,
- 13:15Speaker 10: he just gets super angry all of a sudden.
- 13:19Speaker 4: Yeah, and that's probably going to fall into those behavior categories.
- 13:23Speaker 4: And they're not always necessarily really a reason why that started.
- 13:27Speaker 4: I mean, sometimes maybe there is. Sometimes they had a
- 13:29Speaker 4: bad experience or got into a fight or something like that,
- 13:32Speaker 4: but sometimes you just don't know what that is. And
- 13:35Speaker 4: you know, are they being protective? Are they you know,
- 13:38Speaker 4: being aggressive. There's so many factors that can go into that.
- 13:41Speaker 4: But I think that we're at a young age that
- 13:43Speaker 4: I think you've got to do something about it too,
- 13:46Speaker 4: or else you're going to a lot of these dogs
- 13:48Speaker 4: will become just isolated because the owners are afraid to
- 13:51Speaker 4: take them anywhere or do anything.
- 13:53Speaker 2: And so, yeah, this.
- 13:54Speaker 4: Would be a case where I would say invest in training,
- 13:57Speaker 4: you know, find a trainer and invest in that, because
- 14:00Speaker 4: you just don't want your dog to live like that.
- 14:02Speaker 4: You don't want to live like that and worry about,
- 14:04Speaker 4: you know, does he bite someone or bite someone else's
- 14:06Speaker 4: dog and things like that.
- 14:08Speaker 2: So I think I think probably what's happening is that
- 14:11Speaker 2: he's realized that because he's a Golden Doodle, all of
- 14:14Speaker 2: the other dogs are making fun of him.
- 14:16Speaker 5: Why would you say something like that, because great.
- 14:20Speaker 2: Because he's a golden Because he's a golden Justin, Justin
- 14:24Speaker 2: knows what I mean. They're just kind of good. They're
- 14:27Speaker 2: kind of goofy looking.
- 14:29Speaker 1: Thanks, thank you, Thanks Justin. All right, we couldn't get
- 14:34Speaker 1: to everybody, but if you want to hang on the line,
- 14:36Speaker 1: we'll let you play. Beat Gina if you want.
- 14:38Speaker 2: To thank you dog Stacy has a stinky dog.
- 14:41Speaker 1: So so maybe you want to play candidate for why beat.
- 14:45Speaker 4: Gina instance, Stacy find a way to pull these questions
- 14:48Speaker 4: and then yeah, you know you can answer him and
- 14:50Speaker 4: post him or something.
- 14:51Speaker 2: Doctor Josh Davis soon to be his.
- 14:54Speaker 4: Own man, my own man with my own practice, you know,
- 14:57Speaker 4: open up a prep and saying you right, Sandy, and
- 15:01Speaker 4: late September is what we're shooting for with construction. So yeah,
- 15:04Speaker 4: all keep you guys updated and we'll go from there.
- 15:07Speaker 1: Thank you, thank you, Bye, guys, All right, talk to
- 15:09Speaker 1: you later
