Latest / Inside the Birds: A Philadelphia Eagles Podcast / The DiCecco Daily: Looking At State Of Eagles OC Search As "List Is Shrinking"
Transcript
- 0:10Speaker 1: Hey, what's going on? Everybody? Welcome into another edition of
- 0:13Speaker 1: the Czech o'delle.
- 0:14Speaker 2: It's Andrew Dechecko, Eagles beat reporter for Inside the Birds
- 0:17Speaker 2: dot Com. The ongoing search for the Eagles offensive coordator
- 0:21Speaker 2: continues going into NFC NAFC Championship Game Sunday, and the
- 0:29Speaker 2: latest name to be crossed off the list will be
- 0:31Speaker 2: Bobby Slowick, who, of course was with the Miami Dolphins
- 0:36Speaker 2: and previously the Houston Texans. Obviously he'd he had some
- 0:40Speaker 2: success there with C. J. Stroud in twenty twenty three,
- 0:44Speaker 2: had a little bit of a tail off there. Comes
- 0:45Speaker 2: from the Kyle Shanahan background, which I've outlined, and so
- 0:49Speaker 2: there's some appeal there.
- 0:50Speaker 1: But he won't be coming to the foot off Eagles.
- 0:52Speaker 2: He will be appointed to offensive coordator for the Miami Dolphins.
- 0:56Speaker 1: So that leaves.
- 0:58Speaker 2: A number of candidates, obviously, but the list is shrinking.
- 1:02Speaker 2: There's Declan Doyle who's interesting from the Chicago Bears. He
- 1:06Speaker 2: was the OC under Ben Johnson. Obviously Ben Johnson ran
- 1:09Speaker 2: the show he called the Place. Declan Doyle is about
- 1:11Speaker 2: twenty nine, thirty years old. So here's the conundrum, because
- 1:16Speaker 2: there is a lot of folks who criticized and chastised
- 1:19Speaker 2: the Eagles about appointing a first time play caller in
- 1:23Speaker 2: Kevin Patullo, sort of presiding over an offense with so
- 1:27Speaker 2: much talent, and there's obviously a lot of startup costs
- 1:34Speaker 2: that you.
- 1:34Speaker 1: Have to take into account when you have a first
- 1:35Speaker 1: time play call.
- 1:36Speaker 2: Now, Declan Doyle is very highly thought of and he
- 1:41Speaker 2: comes from the Sean Payton tree, so some intrigue there.
- 1:45Speaker 1: But I mean, again, first time play call.
- 1:47Speaker 2: But I think what that shows is that the Eagles
- 1:50Speaker 2: are willing to expand their search to coaches who aren't
- 1:54Speaker 2: necessarily you know, they don't have that decorated experience calling.
- 2:00Speaker 2: So that's an interesting name want to keep an eye on,
- 2:02Speaker 2: for sure, And you have to wonder if there'll be
- 2:05Speaker 2: any other names perhaps down the line, whether it's Thomas
- 2:10Speaker 2: Brown with the Patriots or Nathan Shieldhouse, who the Eagles
- 2:14Speaker 2: a couple of years ago had some interest in. So
- 2:19Speaker 2: we'll see. Both of those coaches haven't called plays before either.
- 2:22Speaker 2: But I think if we're calling it down the line,
- 2:24Speaker 2: and there is a lot of folks who are really
- 2:26Speaker 2: vocal about Kevin Patullo not calling plays, Brian Johnson not
- 2:30Speaker 2: calling plays and that was sort of a mark, if
- 2:35Speaker 2: you will, against them when they took the job. And then,
- 2:38Speaker 2: of course revision is history. Looking back, I think you
- 2:41Speaker 2: have to look at it and have some questions. I
- 2:43Speaker 2: think the Eagles are in a position right now where
- 2:45Speaker 2: you would ideally like a play caller, experienced play caller,
- 2:50Speaker 2: and when you're taking over that kind of an offense
- 2:53Speaker 2: now a question you can ask yourself, is this a
- 2:55Speaker 2: desirable job?
- 2:57Speaker 1: Well, there's two ways of looking at it. Right it's
- 3:00Speaker 1: a high profile job.
- 3:02Speaker 2: They play in a ton of primetime games, so a
- 3:04Speaker 2: lot of eyes on you and the team. And you
- 3:09Speaker 2: have an owner in Jeffrey Lourie who will do whatever
- 3:11Speaker 2: it takes to make sure that the roster is as
- 3:14Speaker 2: solidified as possible and make them a viable contender.
- 3:17Speaker 1: Year in and year out. And there's a lot of resources.
- 3:21Speaker 1: There's a number of draft picks.
- 3:22Speaker 2: And you have Howie Roseman, who is the best in
- 3:26Speaker 2: the business of what he does, and there's just a
- 3:29Speaker 2: storage success with the Philadelphia Eagles. You also have a
- 3:32Speaker 2: quarterback in jaywhen Hurts who has a winning DNA.
- 3:35Speaker 1: He's cerebral and he's won at the highest level.
- 3:39Speaker 2: So there are a lot of intriguing, you know, elements
- 3:44Speaker 2: to taking that job. But there's the other side of things,
- 3:47Speaker 2: and I think if you're an offensive cordator, you're gonna
- 3:49Speaker 2: want to know first and foremost, what's the health status
- 3:52Speaker 2: of the offensive line, meaning Lane Johnson, Jordan my lot
- 3:56Speaker 2: at Cam Jurgens landon Dickerson, Is Lane Johnson coming back?
- 4:01Speaker 2: What's the status with AJ Brown as he can remain
- 4:03Speaker 2: a Philadelphia Eagle or will he be going elsewhere? It's
- 4:08Speaker 2: probably hard right now for the Eagles even answer that,
- 4:10Speaker 2: But when you look at the Eagles offense, you can
- 4:13Speaker 2: make an argument that two of the most important players
- 4:16Speaker 2: on it are Lane Johnson and AJ Brown, and to
- 4:21Speaker 2: not know the status of either player, well, that could
- 4:25Speaker 2: cloud your decision making. I imagine, you know, there's for
- 4:29Speaker 2: as high octane as that offense is and could be,
- 4:32Speaker 2: there are a lot of questions there. You look at
- 4:34Speaker 2: the offensive line, which played at a historic level in
- 4:37Speaker 2: twenty twenty four, There's the AJ Brown thing, There's the
- 4:40Speaker 2: Lane Johnson scenario. There's also the reality that Jalen Hurts
- 4:48Speaker 2: has grown accustomed to playing a certain style under Nick Sirianni.
- 4:52Speaker 2: The offense is crafted to what we believe is to
- 4:56Speaker 2: take advantage of what the quarterback is exceptional at any
- 5:00Speaker 2: good play calls going.
- 5:01Speaker 1: To do that. And you could look at it and
- 5:03Speaker 1: say it's a Nick Sirianne offense, and it is.
- 5:06Speaker 2: But you go back to his first handful of games
- 5:10Speaker 2: calling plays, and they tried to open things up and
- 5:12Speaker 2: become this pass happy offense, and he was running some
- 5:16Speaker 2: of the things that he was doing from his previous
- 5:18Speaker 2: stop and it didn't work. So they became a run
- 5:20Speaker 2: center team. I go back to Halloween twenty twenty one.
- 5:24Speaker 2: It was the Jordan Howard and Boston Scott Show against
- 5:27Speaker 2: the Detroit Lions, and that's really where I believe it.
- 5:30Speaker 1: They sort of took on that.
- 5:33Speaker 2: Kind of of a personality in a DNA and then,
- 5:36Speaker 2: you know, obviously it became even more so once the
- 5:39Speaker 2: Eagles signed Saquon Barkley. There was a lot of turnovers
- 5:42Speaker 2: early in Kellen Moore's tenure in that one year that.
- 5:46Speaker 1: He was the OC.
- 5:47Speaker 2: The first four weeks, they tried to do some Kellen
- 5:49Speaker 2: Moore type of things.
- 5:50Speaker 1: He tried to bring his.
- 5:53Speaker 2: A little bit of his spin to the offense. It
- 5:55Speaker 2: didn't work. Out and credit to Kellen Moore.
- 5:58Speaker 3: And the Eagles for being able to make the offense
- 6:00Speaker 3: what it was and lean heavily on the running attack.
- 6:03Speaker 3: And the question becomes, how good can this offense be
- 6:07Speaker 3: and what are they going to be able to realistically
- 6:10Speaker 3: do with the personnel that they have. And I think
- 6:12Speaker 3: that's one of the big questions when we look at
- 6:15Speaker 3: the pros and cons if you're being objective about those
- 6:18Speaker 3: looking to take that job that comes with it.
- 6:22Speaker 4: Hey, it's that time of the year that everyone's trying
- 6:24Speaker 4: to clean up their habits and that includes me. Honestly,

- 8:43Speaker 6: Philly fans, game day is stressful enough. Parking, traffic, long lines,
- 8:48Speaker 6: We've all been there, But when it comes to your cannabis,
- 8:51Speaker 6: Camden Apothecary makes it easy. This is the dispensary for
- 8:56Speaker 6: sports fans, just minutes outside of Philly, with plenty of
- 8:59Speaker 6: free parking. You'll be in and out fast, no hassle,
- 9:02Speaker 6: no waiting, and they don't just care about convenience. Cam

- 9:24Speaker 6: you know you're getting the good stuff without overpaying. They
- 9:27Speaker 6: even show love to the community with specials for fans, students,
- 9:32Speaker 6: service members, and healthcare pros. Cam din Apothecary top quality cannabis,
- 9:37Speaker 6: great prices, and an experience made for Philly fans twenty
- 9:41Speaker 6: one and up.
- 9:42Speaker 2: And I believe that Jalen Hurts has proven that over
- 9:46Speaker 2: his career that he'll do whatever it takes, and I
- 9:48Speaker 2: don't think it's fair to suggest that he can't do
- 9:51Speaker 2: some of these things. But it is a realistic question
- 9:54Speaker 2: that if you're a coordinator and you're wanting and you're
- 9:56Speaker 2: looking to take this job, yeah, I mean you're going
- 9:59Speaker 2: to wonder about whether or not that's going to be viable,
- 10:02Speaker 2: whether or not you're going to have to make concessions,
- 10:05Speaker 2: or will you be able to run the offense through
- 10:07Speaker 2: through your vision, through your eyes. I think those are
- 10:10Speaker 2: all fair questions. But when you look at that, I
- 10:13Speaker 2: still think that that's an appealing job with a lot
- 10:16Speaker 2: of playmakers, and you look at the track record, there's
- 10:20Speaker 2: two coordinators who became head coaches and were able to
- 10:23Speaker 2: advance their careers. Now, there were two others who were
- 10:26Speaker 2: fired after one year, including Brian Johnson, who had a
- 10:30Speaker 2: top ten offense.
- 10:31Speaker 1: I believe they were seventh in.
- 10:35Speaker 2: Seventh in points per game or tick over twenty five
- 10:38Speaker 2: points and eighth in yards per game, which was three
- 10:43Speaker 2: tick over three hundred and fifty four. So it's a
- 10:47Speaker 2: high pressure job. The demands are high, the expectations are high.
- 10:52Speaker 2: But if you have any competitive spirit, if you have
- 10:54Speaker 2: any competitive bone in your body, you really want to
- 10:57Speaker 2: push your career to the next level.
- 10:58Speaker 1: It is an appealing job, and I think you have
- 11:00Speaker 1: to go into it with that.
- 11:01Speaker 2: Mindset, and I believe the right coordinator will surface. But
- 11:05Speaker 2: the Eagles have proven that they're not in a rush
- 11:06Speaker 2: just to simply fill the role, and they're looking for
- 11:09Speaker 2: the right candidate. The search continues, and we'll have it
- 11:11Speaker 2: all covered right here on inside the Birds and of
- 11:13Speaker 2: course on to Checho Daily. I am Andrew Dicheco, and
- 11:16Speaker 2: I'll catch you all on the next one
