- 1:15Speaker 1: a call at 888-564-6173. Answering your questions today, we've got
- 1:20Speaker 1: Phil Metzger, the pastor of Calvary San Diego, and he
- 1:23Speaker 1: is not on Zoom today. He is here in the studio.
- 1:27Speaker 1: It is always good to see you in person, Phil Metzger.
- 1:29Speaker 1: And joining us is Aaron Hale. He's the pastor of
- 1:32Speaker 1: Calvary Chapel, Forrest Frank, no, Calvary Chapel, uh, Foothill Ranch,
- 1:38Speaker 1: which rhymes with Forrest Frank, so maybe that's what I
- 1:40Speaker 1: was thinking, but it's in the city of Lake Forest,
- 1:42Speaker 1: so I guess I got everything confused. But anyway,
- 1:45Speaker 1: Good to have you both of you here. You guys
- 1:47Speaker 1: kind of know each other, sort of. So, uh, let's, uh,
- 1:50Speaker 1: let's reintroduce. Aaron, tell Phil a little bit about yourself
- 1:53Speaker 1: and then vice versa. So I've been at Calvary Chapel
- 1:58Speaker 1: Foothill Ranch since 2020, and that year we merged the
- 2:02Speaker 1: church I pastored prior to that, which was Kingsfield, another
- 2:05Speaker 1: Calvary Chapel. We were in Mission Viejo.
- 2:07Speaker 1: Our congregations came together and uh we've we've been doing
- 2:11Speaker 1: that now for about 7 years. So, uh, before that,
- 2:14Speaker 1: I was out in the Inland Empire at Calvary Chapel
- 2:16Speaker 1: of Redlands, the packing house. You were packing. I was, yeah,
- 2:20Speaker 1: with my best bud. I do, I know your best bud, yeah.
- 2:24Speaker 1: Greg Opine. Yes, yes, Greg's a good guy. So Phil,
- 2:27Speaker 1: tell us about you. Yeah, I am 8 years now
- 2:31Speaker 1: in South San Diego, Calvary, San Diego, and before that,
- 2:35Speaker 1: 22 years in Eastern Europe, church planning in the country
- 2:38Speaker 1: of Hungary, and also in Russia, and but mainly in Hungary. Nice. Yeah,
- 2:44Speaker 1: now you're, now you're here. I'm here. Yay, I'm right
- 2:47Speaker 1: next to you guys. Yeah, I get to be in studio.
- 2:49Speaker 1: It's always fun.
- 2:50Speaker 1: Get to hang out with the dudes. Yay. All right,
- 2:52Speaker 1: so call in and talk to Phil and Aaron at 888-564-6173.
- 2:58Speaker 1: As I mentioned a little while ago, you can also
- 3:00Speaker 1: submit your questions online. So let's begin with a question
- 3:02Speaker 1: that was submitted online and then we'll go to the phones, uh.
- 3:05Speaker 1: Here is Darius in Plano, Texas's question. He writes, In
- 3:10Speaker 1: my Christian life I desire to be faithful and practicing
- 3:13Speaker 1: spiritual disciplines like prayer, Bible reading, regular church attendance, etc. However,
- 3:18Speaker 1: one area that I've been finding myself dormant,
- 3:21Speaker 1: dormant in is sharing my faith. I believe one of
- 3:24Speaker 1: the reasons why is that I often find myself feeling
- 3:27Speaker 1: insecure about being open about my Christianity because of my
- 3:32Speaker 1: awareness of my own personal flaws and shortcomings. Normally we
- 3:36Speaker 1: get questions like, I'm afraid that
- 3:39Speaker 1: Someone's gonna ask me a question that I can't answer,
- 3:41Speaker 1: but that's not what Darius is saying. He says, uh,
- 3:43Speaker 1: whenever I'm feeling stressed or under pressure, I have a
- 3:46Speaker 1: tendency to feel irritable, and it can sometimes show through
- 3:49Speaker 1: in my facial expressions while interacting with people during these times.
- 3:53Speaker 1: It hasn't been a big enough issue to make people
- 3:55Speaker 1: dislike me, but it is noticeable at times, so it's
- 3:58Speaker 1: something I try to be conscious of.
- 4:01Speaker 1: Things like this can cause me to feel worried about
- 4:04Speaker 1: people knowing I'm a Christian. I don't want my own
- 4:07Speaker 1: personal flaws to be something that puts people off from Christianity,
- 4:11Speaker 1: since it may sometimes seem like it doesn't really make
- 4:13Speaker 1: me all that different from anybody else. I desire to
- 4:16Speaker 1: share my faith, but I struggle with feeling like it
- 4:18Speaker 1: would be hypocritical to be the one telling others about
- 4:21Speaker 1: Jesus when I know I have a lot of areas
- 4:23Speaker 1: that I need to grow in myself, even though my
- 4:26Speaker 1: personal character.
- 4:27Speaker 1: Isn't the only measure by which people would judge the
- 4:29Speaker 1: validity of Christianity. I know it makes an impact. Besides this,
- 4:33Speaker 1: I also struggle to know how to start a conversation
- 4:35Speaker 1: about Jesus with people without it feeling random and awkward.
- 4:40Speaker 1: Do you have any biblical advice for someone who desires
- 4:42Speaker 1: to share their faith but struggles with the fear of
- 4:45Speaker 1: not representing Christ as they should, and also any practical
- 4:48Speaker 1: tips on how to start spiritual conversations with people? Aaron,
- 4:52Speaker 1: we'll start with you.
- 4:54Speaker 1: I feel like I can relate to you, Darius, um.
- 4:57Speaker 1: struggling with that that sense of inadequacy or just an
- 5:00Speaker 1: awareness of sin and that that.
- 5:04Speaker 1: draining power and boldness. And I, I think maybe there's
- 5:09Speaker 1: two sides to that, as, as I'm reflecting on your question.
- 5:12Speaker 1: First of all, my mind goes to Ephesians chapter 2
- 5:14Speaker 1: verse 8, for by grace you have been saved through faith,
- 5:17Speaker 1: that not of yourselves, it is a gift of God
- 5:20Speaker 1: lest anyone should boast. The gospel itself is centered, it's grounded,
- 5:24Speaker 1: it's rooted in grace, and we have to remember that.
- 5:29Speaker 1: And you're never gonna get to the place where, or
- 5:32Speaker 1: at least you shouldn't get to the place where you're,
- 5:34Speaker 1: you're ministering or sharing the gospel from.
- 5:38Speaker 1: Uh, personal strength. At the same time, our, our testimony
- 5:44Speaker 1: and our dependence on the, the, the, the Holy Spirit,
- 5:47Speaker 1: our nearness to Christ, that is important. And a degree
- 5:52Speaker 1: of self-examination is healthy. Too much can become, you know,
- 5:56Speaker 1: an introspection that drowns us in, in condemnation, and that's,
- 6:00Speaker 1: that's not good. That's, that's not where we want to go.
- 6:02Speaker 1: But
- 6:03Speaker 1: But, but I look at Galatians 5 at the fruit
- 6:05Speaker 1: of the spirit and, and uh repentance, crying out to
- 6:09Speaker 1: God for help and more grace. Uh, but I, I
- 6:14Speaker 1: think
- 6:16Speaker 1: Standing, standing in the reality that it's the message that, that, uh, it's,
- 6:22Speaker 1: it's the gospel. It's the work that Christ has done,
- 6:26Speaker 1: not the work that we do, but by which people
- 6:29Speaker 1: are saved. And just quickly, the, the idea of starting
- 6:32Speaker 1: a conversation, how do we get there? Um, when I
- 6:36Speaker 1: heard the question, my mind went to Greg Cochel's book Tactics. It's,
- 6:40Speaker 1: it's a great resource if you're looking for one.
- 6:43Speaker 1: To kind of dig into, to stretch yourself a little
- 6:45Speaker 1: bit and sharing the gospel. He's real big on
- 6:48Speaker 1: Asking questions and putting, he talks about putting a pebble
- 6:52Speaker 1: in someone's shoe. Maybe you're too intimidated to share the
- 6:56Speaker 1: whole message, or you feel like you're not able to, but,
- 6:58Speaker 1: but you can ask questions and you can listen to
- 7:00Speaker 1: their answers, and you can leave them with something to
- 7:02Speaker 1: think about that that leaves them uncomfortable, and, and, uh,
- 7:08Speaker 1: in comparison to where they were before, and maybe would
- 7:11Speaker 1: stir them to think more about Christ. Yeah, it's a
- 7:15Speaker 1: great answer.
- 7:16Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, and maybe I'll come at it from
- 7:19Speaker 1: a different angle, just so there's, there's even more here,
- 7:22Speaker 1: because that was a great answer, but I'm thinking for
- 7:24Speaker 1: this guy James and whoever else is wondering that thing,
- 7:27Speaker 1: I would say like when you're worried that you become
- 7:29Speaker 1: irritable and defensive in the way that you talk, how
- 7:32Speaker 1: do you think you're gonna get better? Like, do you
- 7:34Speaker 1: think by not sharing you're gonna become less irritable? No,
- 7:38Speaker 1: the way you're gonna get less irritable is to just
- 7:41Speaker 1: keep sharing.
- 7:42Speaker 1: Get more comfortable like speaking, speaking it out, like if
- 7:46Speaker 1: you know that's your, your tendency, then just pay attention
- 7:50Speaker 1: to that. Um, I, I think there's a real, real,
- 7:53Speaker 1: real mistake when we as Christians believe
- 7:56Speaker 1: That our goodness is going to have a greater impact
- 8:00Speaker 1: upon a person's salvation than our humanity. We are testimonies
- 8:06Speaker 1: of grace, not of high moral or ethical standard. So
- 8:12Speaker 1: if you approach evangelism as, well, I need to make
- 8:16Speaker 1: sure that they get my best foot moving forward, just
- 8:20Speaker 1: know this, they'll smell your hypocrisy.
- 8:23Speaker 1: Uh, just like we all can. So just be an honest,
- 8:26Speaker 1: real person, and I, I didn't, I haven't read that
- 8:29Speaker 1: book Tactics, that sounds great. I was just gonna say too,
- 8:31Speaker 1: the way I found the the best way to have
- 8:33Speaker 1: conversations is to listen to people. Everybody likes to talk,
- 8:37Speaker 1: and if you let them, you'll have an open door.
- 8:40Speaker 1: Jesus did this, it was a great practice, we got
- 8:43Speaker 1: to do the same thing, but stop waiting for
- 8:47Speaker 1: You to do good because like my experience is, you know,
- 8:50Speaker 1: doing good enough is like having enough money or being
- 8:53Speaker 1: prepared for kids you're never there. There's always more. There's
- 8:57Speaker 1: just always more so stop waiting and get after it
- 9:01Speaker 1: and sometimes it's not even about starting a spiritual conversation,
- 9:04Speaker 1: but starting a.
- 9:05Speaker 1: Conversation period, which you never know, could lead into because
- 9:10Speaker 1: you're talking to somebody. So where do you live? Oh,
- 9:12Speaker 1: I just moved into the area. Oh, you did? What
- 9:14Speaker 1: church are you going to? Well, I haven't found one yet.
- 9:17Speaker 1: Come to my church, you know, whatever. Who knows? Everything
- 9:19Speaker 1: is an opportunity. I mean, you know, you think of
- 9:22Speaker 1: Jesus talking to this woman at a well.
- 9:24Speaker 1: It didn't start spiritual. It was a simple conversation, and
- 9:28Speaker 1: we just got to be willing to have, but you got, listen,
- 9:31Speaker 1: you gotta have simple conversations that don't have to lead there.
- 9:34Speaker 1: You just hope that the door opens. Sometimes people can
- 9:37Speaker 1: tell when you're like, I don't care about what you're saying.
- 9:40Speaker 1: I just want to get to Jesus, you know? And
- 9:42Speaker 1: you gotta, you just gotta actually care about people, and
- 9:44Speaker 1: the doors will definitely open brain. That's a really good point.
- 9:47Speaker 1: OK, Darius, thank you so much for sending in your
- 9:49Speaker 1: question through the pastor's perspective page at Kwave.com, which you
- 9:54Speaker 1: can easily get to if you scan the QR code
- 9:56Speaker 1: on Facebook, YouTube, or Instagram right now. Let's go to
- 9:59Speaker 1: the phones, 888-564-6173 is our number. We're gonna start with
- 10:04Speaker 1: John in San Juan Capistrano listening to K-Wave. Hey, John,
- 10:07Speaker 1: what's your question?
- 10:10Speaker 2: My question is, pastors, uh,
- 10:14Speaker 2: Um, did the, the Hebrews built the pyramids. I can't,
- 10:18Speaker 2: I just can't seem to, you know, nobody seems to know.
- 10:22Speaker 2: So I'm gonna hang up and you, if you have
- 10:24Speaker 2: any information I could look up or whatever just because
- 10:29Speaker 2: it seems like it's a mystery to me and uh.
- 10:34Speaker 2: That's what I would think, that since they were they were,
- 10:37Speaker 2: you know, captive by, by, uh, the Egyptians, they built it,
- 10:43Speaker 2: but I, I just don't know, so I'm gonna hang
- 10:45Speaker 2: up and, and I'm gonna listen to your, uh, what
- 10:48Speaker 1: you
- 10:49Speaker 2: have to say. Thanks, pastors.
- 10:50Speaker 1: Alright, thanks for calling in, John. Yeah, happy to start, John,
- 10:54Speaker 1: the pyramids, the ones that you're thinking of, were built
- 10:57Speaker 1: about 1000 years before the Jews were slaves in Egypt,
- 11:00Speaker 1: so no, they did not build the pyramids.
- 11:03Speaker 1: They are, you know, when you read about their, their slavery,
- 11:06Speaker 1: you do read about them making bricks and all. Remember
- 11:09Speaker 1: the Egyptians were prolific builders, kind of like the Romans,
- 11:12Speaker 1: most societies were back in those days. They're prolific builders,
- 11:16Speaker 1: and so in every generation they use slave labor to
- 11:20Speaker 1: build their monuments, and so we read about the Jews
- 11:24Speaker 1: building and having certain cities that they were a part of,
- 11:27Speaker 1: but that would have been 1000 years, give or take.
- 11:30Speaker 1: You know, think Abraham's day when the pyramids were being built, not,
- 11:34Speaker 1: not the days of, uh, the, the slavery, the bondage
- 11:37Speaker 1: for the Israelites.
- 11:41Speaker 1: Oh, nothing to add to that. They, they built some cities.
- 11:44Speaker 1: Exodus one talks about that, but as Phil pointed out,
- 11:47Speaker 1: the dates, the dates are different. Can you imagine just
- 11:51Speaker 1: building those things? I mean, how did they do it?
- 11:52Speaker 1: Did they have, I mean, did they have cranes and
- 11:55Speaker 1: things like we have nowadays? It's incredible. I, I love
- 11:58Speaker 1: all this like, I mean.
- 12:00Speaker 1: They're like the Mythbusters or people like that that are like,
- 12:02Speaker 1: you know, they're they're starting to figure out how these
- 12:04Speaker 1: things happened, and it seems like, you know, they use
- 12:07Speaker 1: a lot of water, they, they, you know, all of
- 12:09Speaker 1: a sudden things became more buoyant when you put it
- 12:11Speaker 1: in water and things like that. It's fascinating stuff. It
- 12:15Speaker 1: wasn't built just by human, like, you couldn't just lift,
- 12:18Speaker 1: you can't get enough people around a, a stone that
- 12:20Speaker 1: big to lift. It's just not. They were very smart.
- 12:23Speaker 1: Let's put it like that, man. These people were a
- 12:25Speaker 1: lot smarter than we give them credit for.
- 12:28Speaker 1: Thank you so much for your phone call today, John.
- 12:29Speaker 1: 888-564-6173 is the number. Let's talk to Tommy and Temecula
- 12:35Speaker 1: listening to K-wave. What's your question, Tommy?
- 12:40Speaker 2: How are you guys doing?
- 12:41Speaker 1: Doing well. You're on with Phil Metzger and Aaron Hale.
- 12:43Speaker 1: What did you wanna know?
- 12:46Speaker 2: Uh, is there a certain way to pray for healing? Like,
- 12:50Speaker 2: you know, I've been praying for a long time for
- 12:53Speaker 2: my youngest son.
- 12:55Speaker 2: He just, he suffers.
- 12:59Speaker 2: From anxiety, like, I mean, it's bad and OCD is
- 13:03Speaker 2: like bad where like he won't even go outside, you know.
- 13:08Speaker 2: Um, we, we lost our oldest boy about a year ago.
- 13:13Speaker 2: My youngest, he was dealing with, with what he's going
- 13:16Speaker 2: through before my son passed away, but it got worse
- 13:21Speaker 2: after he passed away, so like I mean.
- 13:26Speaker 2: I trust God. I know he hears me, but does
- 13:29Speaker 2: he hear me? Like I'm, I'm praying like, oh Dave,
- 13:33Speaker 1: how old is your son, Tommy?
- 13:36Speaker 2: He's 21.
- 13:39Speaker 1: Aaron, what would you say?
- 13:40Speaker 2: Oh,
- 13:41Speaker 1: Tommy, I'm sorry.
- 13:44Speaker 1: That's a really heavy situation. Um, sorry for your, your
- 13:48Speaker 1: son that you lost and now this one that's struggling,
- 13:51Speaker 1: I think.
- 13:52Speaker 1: When our kids are hurting, that's, I, I don't know
- 13:56Speaker 1: that there are things that are more difficult than that.
- 13:58Speaker 1: And
- 13:59Speaker 1: How to, how to pray for them, I think.
- 14:04Speaker 1: Praying the word, uh, a scripture actually comes to mind.
- 14:08Speaker 1: Isaiah chapter 57 verse 15. For thus says the high
- 14:13Speaker 1: and lofty one who inhabits eternity, whose name is holy,
- 14:16Speaker 1: I dwell in the high and holy place.
- 14:20Speaker 1: As also the, um, I think it's the ESV that
- 14:23Speaker 1: adds an as also. So I'm gonna put that in there.
- 14:25Speaker 1: I'm reading from the New King James with him who
- 14:28Speaker 1: has a contrite and a humble spirit, to revive the
- 14:32Speaker 1: spirit of the humble and to revive the heart of
- 14:33Speaker 1: the contrite ones. And I, I love the picture that
- 14:35Speaker 1: we're given there of God that although he's, he's high
- 14:39Speaker 1: and lofty, he's in, he's in the heavens, he also
- 14:41Speaker 1: makes his abode, his place, his home with the contrite
- 14:45Speaker 1: and the humble to, to revive and to um
- 14:50Speaker 1: To restore, to bring, to bring healing, and I think
- 14:55Speaker 1: In praying for a child that is that is suffering
- 14:58Speaker 1: in the ways that you're describing, I, I think praying
- 15:01Speaker 1: and asking that God would, would meet them in that
- 15:04Speaker 1: place and recognizing that God understands that he knows your
- 15:11Speaker 1: your son's pain.
- 15:14Speaker 1: I, I would just also add, I know you didn't
- 15:16Speaker 1: ask this, Tommy, but um.
- 15:19Speaker 1: I would make sure that he has access to to
- 15:22Speaker 1: all the tools and the help that he can get,
- 15:25Speaker 1: that he's getting uh counseling, maybe some pastoral counseling, maybe
- 15:31Speaker 1: there's some, some Christian therapy that he could get access to,
- 15:35Speaker 1: to help, help him with the the bearing of those
- 15:37Speaker 1: burdens and there might actually be an aspect of this
- 15:40Speaker 1: that enters into the um into the the medical world
- 15:44Speaker 1: where maybe he can be helped on that end as well.
- 15:49Speaker 1: I appreciate that that God, he's nearer to the brokenhearted,
- 15:52Speaker 1: he tells us in the Psalms and sometimes, especially in
- 15:57Speaker 1: in places like this where it's so close to our heart.
- 16:01Speaker 1: Um, we, we cry out to him and we enter
- 16:04Speaker 1: into that place, uh, where the, the spirit intercedes with,
- 16:09Speaker 1: with groanings, where, where, where they're groaning before the Lord and,
- 16:14Speaker 1: and in the spirit, and I, I think I heard
- 16:17Speaker 1: you ask, maybe state that you know God's here, hears,
- 16:22Speaker 1: but
- 16:22Speaker 1: How can I know? And I think Isaiah 57 and
- 16:26Speaker 1: many other passages, they, they remind us that God, He,
- 16:29Speaker 1: he enters into our, our suffering and our brokenness, our hurt.
- 16:35Speaker 1: He understands, he cares, he's near, he's listening, and he,
- 16:40Speaker 1: he desires to answer sometimes in ways we can't see.
- 16:44Speaker 1: In in ways that we don't know, and not always
- 16:47Speaker 1: according to our time frame, but he absolutely hears. That's
- 16:52Speaker 1: great stuff. Yeah, I mean, you know, Tommy, to answer
- 16:54Speaker 1: your question too, I wanna add this, you know, how
- 16:57Speaker 1: do I know God's hearing my prayers? If you've asked,
- 17:00Speaker 1: he heard.
- 17:01Speaker 1: The Bible's explicit on that.
- 17:04Speaker 1: Um, you can't, we draw a false conclusion, like the
- 17:08Speaker 1: only way I know that God heard my prayers is
- 17:10Speaker 1: if he answered the way I asked, and that's just not,
- 17:13Speaker 1: that's not spoken in the scriptures, but that God hears
- 17:16Speaker 1: you is an absolute. If you've cried out to God,
- 17:19Speaker 1: He hears every prayer.
- 17:20Speaker 1: Uh, he makes this clear from the very beginning of
- 17:22Speaker 1: the Bible all the way through. And then the, the, the,
- 17:25Speaker 1: the final thing that I would encourage you, how do
- 17:27Speaker 1: you pray for this? Think of the way Jesus taught
- 17:29Speaker 1: us to pray, um, Matthew 7, Luke 11, keep asking,
- 17:33Speaker 1: keep knocking, keep seeking. In other words, the, the verbiage
- 17:36Speaker 1: there is not ask one time, and I know you
- 17:39Speaker 1: haven't done that. Listen, we both, all of us in
- 17:41Speaker 1: this room and everybody listening knows there ain't no pain
- 17:43Speaker 1: like the pain of a child, but that you're, you know,
- 17:46Speaker 1: as a parent, like it's just painful. It doesn't matter
- 17:48Speaker 1: what age your kid is.
- 17:49Speaker 1: So keep asking, keep seeking, keep knocking. Um, persistence is,
- 17:54Speaker 1: is power, and persistence is something that God, um, God's
- 17:58Speaker 1: not asking you to do it, and then he'll answer,
- 18:00Speaker 1: but you'll keep being changed as you keep on seeking
- 18:04Speaker 1: and knocking and asking. Keep at it, bud, it's hard,
- 18:07Speaker 1: it's painful, um, but God, as, as Aaron pointed out,
- 18:11Speaker 1: it's a great verse, but God is for the brokenhearted.
- 18:14Speaker 1: He's for you, bud. Phil, would you pray for Tommy? Yes,
- 18:17Speaker 1: I'd love to.
- 18:18Speaker 1: Yeah, Father, I want to pray for Tommy and his
- 18:20Speaker 1: son and for the pain that his son's going through,
- 18:23Speaker 1: and it's real, and um it may not be like
- 18:26Speaker 1: fully understood, but that doesn't change it's, it's, that it's
- 18:30Speaker 1: very real, and I pray that you would bring him
- 18:31Speaker 1: through that. I pray that you would bring him, you know,
- 18:34Speaker 1: as your word says, that you bring him into a
- 18:36Speaker 1: perfect peace, um, whose mind is stayed on you, Isaiah 26.
- 18:41Speaker 1: I pray this for Tommy, Lord, that you would help
- 18:43Speaker 1: him to not lose heart in doing well.
- 18:46Speaker 1: Uh, great is his reward is he just keeps on
- 18:49Speaker 1: pouring out his heart to you for his son and, um,
- 18:52Speaker 1: just give him a sense of peace even now that he's,
- 18:56Speaker 1: he's in it. It doesn't feel good, but he's doing it.
- 18:59Speaker 1: He's doing what you've called him to do. Bless this family, Lord,
- 19:02Speaker 1: in Jesus' name. Amen.
- 19:04Speaker 1: Amen. And everyone watching and listening, you guys keep Tommy
- 19:07Speaker 1: and his son in your prayers too. This is Pastor's Perspective,
- 19:10Speaker 1: 888-564-6173 is the number to call. We've got pastors Phil
- 19:15Speaker 1: Metzger and Aaron Hale here to talk to you until
- 19:18Speaker 1: 4 o'clock. And uh now we're gonna go to Haines City,
- 19:21Speaker 1: Florida and speak with Brandon who's got a question about boundaries.
- 19:26Speaker 1: And uh Brandon, how did you know about us there
- 19:29Speaker 1: in Florida?
- 19:31Speaker 2: Hey there. So I actually have a um friend who
- 19:34Speaker 2: listens to you guys up there, and he, I was
- 19:37Speaker 2: telling him a little bit about what I'm going through,
- 19:39Speaker 2: and he actually forwarded me to you guys. So after
- 19:43Speaker 2: I get off the phone, I need to tune in.
- 19:45Speaker 1: Awesome. Well, thank your friend on our behalf, but what
- 19:47Speaker 1: is your, uh, question? What did you wanna ask?
- 19:51Speaker 2: So, um, I'll try to keep it, uh, short for you. Um,
- 19:55Speaker 2: I have a mutual friend, different mutual friend, um, and
- 20:01Speaker 2: this person that we know, we, I met this stranger yesterday,
- 20:05Speaker 2: and they've been struggling with some things. They said they
- 20:09Speaker 2: wanted to talk. They follow Jesus already. And
- 20:15Speaker 2: I asked them in the beginning, do you want to
- 20:18Speaker 2: vent or do you want.
- 20:20Speaker 2: An answer
- 20:22Speaker 2: To your problem.
- 20:24Speaker 2: And they told me, um, they didn't really answer that question,
- 20:27Speaker 2: to be honest with you, and then they just kept um.
- 20:31Speaker 2: Going on and on. It was about a 6-hour phone
- 20:35Speaker 2: call and I talked for probably about 30, 45 minutes.
- 20:40Speaker 2: And
- 20:42Speaker 2: I work uh 12 hours, then put 2 kids down.
- 20:46Speaker 1: Hang on, I'm still trying to get past the 6-hour
- 20:49Speaker 1: conversation part, man.
- 20:51Speaker 2: Oh man, yeah, you're, you're telling me. I was, uh,
- 20:56Speaker 2: trying to hear him out as much as I could
- 20:58Speaker 2: and
- 21:01Speaker 2: Uh, it was, it was a bit much. So yeah,
- 21:03Speaker 2: that's why the, the topic is the question about boundaries,
- 21:07Speaker 2: you know, I keep telling myself what would Jesus do,
- 21:10Speaker 2: and I don't wanna be, um.
- 21:14Speaker 2: Um, I don't want to turn someone who is needy away,
- 21:19Speaker 2: especially a sister in Christ. Yeah,
- 21:21Speaker 1: but do you think Jesus would hang out with someone
- 21:23Speaker 1: for 6 hours? Yeah, I mean, it's not recorded in Scripture, but, um,
- 21:27Speaker 1: you know, what, what, what do you say, Aaron? Start
- 21:29Speaker 1: with you, um.
- 21:32Speaker 1: Well, I'm just gonna ask a question real quick. You
- 21:34Speaker 1: said you put your kids down to bed. This was
- 21:35Speaker 1: a woman that called you?
- 21:39Speaker 1: Uh, yes, yes, are, are you married?
- 21:43Speaker 1: I am married, yes. OK, so,
- 21:46Speaker 1: I'd be careful. First of all, it's about spending that
- 21:49Speaker 1: amount of time with, I don't, I don't spend that
- 21:52Speaker 1: amount of time in counseling or, I mean, I'm not
- 21:55Speaker 1: having phone calls with women anyway. I try to be
- 21:58Speaker 1: careful to um talking about boundaries. I try to be
- 22:01Speaker 1: careful to maintain those boundaries. I want to make sure
- 22:03Speaker 1: I preserve.
- 22:04Speaker 1: The, um, the intimacy of relationship in my marriage and
- 22:08Speaker 1: sometimes if a conversation can go too long, there can
- 22:12Speaker 1: be too much of a pouring of of someone's heart
- 22:16Speaker 1: into another person. Uh, the counseling appointments that I have, they're,
- 22:21Speaker 1: they're limited in length, and I've always got a secretary
- 22:25Speaker 1: or a staff member nearby, the door is open, there's
- 22:28Speaker 1: a window, and I
- 22:33Speaker 1: You're asking about boundaries, and so yes, they are healthy
- 22:35Speaker 1: to have in place, Brandon. I, I try to guard
- 22:37Speaker 1: my heart, like when someone shares with me.
- 22:41Speaker 1: I, I, I'm not looking to be cold or rude,
- 22:44Speaker 1: but at the same time, I want to be careful
- 22:45Speaker 1: not to step into a place that God has not
- 22:48Speaker 1: asked me to step into that could become for the
- 22:51Speaker 1: other person a point of a point of stumbling. I'm,
- 22:54Speaker 1: I'm not, um,
- 22:56Speaker 1: Looking to be that, that, you know, shoulder to cry
- 23:00Speaker 1: on in an unhealthy sense. And, you know, Brian and
- 23:05Speaker 1: Phil have already commented a little bit about the 6 hours. Yeah, it,
- 23:09Speaker 1: it's OK to interject, interrupt, and say, let's let's get
- 23:15Speaker 1: down to what the main issue is. There, there are
- 23:17Speaker 1: ways I think that you can pull somebody in. Now, I'm,
- 23:20Speaker 1: I'm fully aware there are those people that will just
- 23:22Speaker 1: keep going as long as you will allow them.
- 23:25Speaker 1: And those are those moments where you just have to say,
- 23:27Speaker 1: you know what, I've I've got work in the morning, um,
- 23:30Speaker 1: I've got this, I've got that. And sometimes we can
- 23:32Speaker 1: feel as you've expressed, well, you know, I want to
- 23:34Speaker 1: be Christ-like, and I want to be sensitive to the
- 23:37Speaker 1: Holy Spirit. But neither Christ nor the Holy Spirit, I,
- 23:42Speaker 1: I don't think wants us to be either in unhealthy places.
- 23:47Speaker 1: or to
- 23:50Speaker 1: We'll call it, we'll just say be available to the
- 23:53Speaker 1: point where maybe it's detracting from your own first ministries
- 23:58Speaker 1: of your family, now you're not able to put in a,
- 24:01Speaker 1: you know, a good day's work because you're exhausted, etc. etc.
- 24:04Speaker 1: And so, um, I'll I'll let that be my input
- 24:08Speaker 1: and
- 24:09Speaker 1: I have nothing more to add. You shouldn't be in
- 24:11Speaker 1: a conversation for 6 hours. I mean, even a good
- 24:14Speaker 1: conversation can't go 6 hours, dude. I, that's just too much,
- 24:18Speaker 1: that's too much. And my thing on like this is
- 24:21Speaker 1: a gal that's calling you, even if you just go
- 24:24Speaker 1: beyond like, hey, maybe I shouldn't or maybe that's inappropriate,
- 24:27Speaker 1: just assume it's totally appropriate. You're also not capable of
- 24:30Speaker 1: helping her as much as like your wife could have,
- 24:33Speaker 1: you know, or like there's there's limits, there's there's, there
- 24:36Speaker 1: are boundaries and
- 24:38Speaker 1: To me the boundary is a 6 hour conversation is
- 24:40Speaker 1: crossing it, so yeah, you don't need to be in that,
- 24:42Speaker 1: that's not a, the question isn't like would Jesus do that? Well,
- 24:46Speaker 1: I mean, he wasn't using the phone, so, you know,
- 24:49Speaker 1: that's not the issue, it's more like, you know, is
- 24:52Speaker 1: this even like right for you?
- 24:54Speaker 1: And um you know, free therapy isn't what you signed
- 24:58Speaker 1: up for, so you know it's cool to be a
- 25:00Speaker 1: friend and if you're, you know, it's different if the
- 25:02Speaker 1: person came over for dinner and you and you, you're
- 25:04Speaker 1: all hanging out and you're having a conversation, but 6
- 25:06Speaker 1: hour phone calls too much. Well, even like Brandon said that, uh,
- 25:10Speaker 1: is this person just wanting to vent? Like, are they
- 25:13Speaker 1: actually going to listen to any of the advice that
- 25:15Speaker 1: I give them, or are they just venting? And, well,
- 25:18Speaker 1: if it's 6 hours and you talk for 30 and
- 25:20Speaker 1: they talk for 5.5 hours, no.
- 25:22Speaker 1: Uh, at that point, there's no, there's nothing.
- 25:26Speaker 1: That's painful.
- 25:29Speaker 2: A few things that, um, well, first off, I just
- 25:31Speaker 2: wanna say I appreciate the, um, advice, um, on the
- 25:35Speaker 2: first gentleman who mentioned, uh, to be wary of that. Um, actually,
- 25:40Speaker 2: whenever I got home after, uh, I, I, I work
- 25:43Speaker 2: on a UPS truck, so I talk with some friends
- 25:46Speaker 2: while I work and chit chat. Um, but this person
- 25:50Speaker 2: got my attention for a little while and the last
- 25:53Speaker 2: hour of the conversation, my wife joined in whenever I
- 25:57Speaker 2: got home.
- 25:58Speaker 2: And I feel like this person was just, um, very
- 26:03Speaker 2: lonely and does not have a lot of people like
- 26:07Speaker 2: someone else was saying, um, you know, what, what can
- 26:10Speaker 2: I do for this person over the phone, you know, you,
- 26:14Speaker 2: she should definitely be spending this time venting with the
- 26:20Speaker 2: Lord in prayer and
- 26:21Speaker 1: does
- 26:21Speaker 1: she have a counselor or a therapist or
- 26:25Speaker 2: Um, a spirit counselor and a therapist from what I understand,
- 26:30Speaker 2: but like I said yesterday, that six-hour conversation was the
- 26:34Speaker 2: first time I've met this young lady.
- 26:37Speaker 1: Everybody's wondering what's a spirit counselor.
- 26:40Speaker 2: I, I, I don't know either.
- 26:43Speaker 1: But wait, can I, can I, hold on, Brandon, you
- 26:45Speaker 1: just met this gal. You just, you just met her?
- 26:49Speaker 2: Um, yes, sir. So, uh, there's a Christian, um, there's
- 26:55Speaker 2: a gaming social platform where you just talk with a
- 26:57Speaker 2: bunch of people called Discord, and there you make different
- 27:02Speaker 2: topic of servers, and
- 27:03Speaker 1: dude, she's just, that's a waste of time, uh, not
- 27:06Speaker 1: the gaming, whatever, gaming and all that, but you just
- 27:08Speaker 1: met this person, bro, if you had a six-hour conversation
- 27:11Speaker 1: with like your best friend, maybe.
- 27:15Speaker 1: I don't think so, but a complete stranger who you
- 27:17Speaker 1: just met, no, this is just, no, you don't need
- 27:20Speaker 1: to do that. This, nobody should be doing that. That person,
- 27:24Speaker 1: if they're lonely, then you, you know, hey, you should
- 27:27Speaker 1: go to church. You should get this. Churches are filled,
- 27:30Speaker 1: and I'm one of those people with lonely people who
- 27:33Speaker 1: like want friends. It's the best place to make friends.
- 27:35Speaker 1: So no, you don't have to, you don't have to
- 27:37Speaker 1: be a, a free chat room for somebody, no.
- 27:40Speaker 1: So to put up the boundary, should Brandon just maybe
- 27:43Speaker 1: send a text? I, I mean, I don't know how,
- 27:45Speaker 1: how would that work where he just says, hey, I mean,
- 27:48Speaker 1: what is that boundary? What do you think it looks like?
- 27:50Speaker 1: I mean, obviously don't talk for 6 hours, but what,
- 27:53Speaker 1: don't even talk for half an hour. Don't even, yeah,
- 27:55Speaker 1: the next one is, hey, I'm not a counselor, and I, I'm,
- 27:57Speaker 1: I'm not, I got a job and I have a family.
- 28:00Speaker 1: I'm not the one that you, but there's amazing churches
- 28:02Speaker 1: in our area. If you want to have somebody you
- 28:04Speaker 1: could talk to, come with me. I'll introduce you to somebody. Yeah, point,
- 28:07Speaker 1: point him to the Lord. Point him to the local church. Exactly. Yeah, I,
- 28:11Speaker 1: I think often as Christians we think, well, we're supposed
- 28:14Speaker 1: to be kind. We're supposed to give of ourselves to people.
- 28:17Speaker 1: And so when this happens, and that that's why.
- 28:20Speaker 1: Like when Brandon was saying it's one of those things
- 28:22Speaker 1: that it's hard to, uh, you know, what would Jesus do?
- 28:25Speaker 1: Jesus would give his time for everybody, you know, that
- 28:30Speaker 1: might be what people think. And so Jesus was so
- 28:33Speaker 1: discerning in ways that like we're just not right. That's
- 28:35Speaker 1: just the reality and so.
- 28:37Speaker 1: But I think for Brandon's sake and anybody else's sake,
- 28:40Speaker 1: you should hear like, here's 3 of us in this
- 28:41Speaker 1: room that are all like, yikes, that should be enough.
- 28:44Speaker 1: Like take the wisdom of, you know, a multitude of
- 28:47Speaker 1: counselors here who just say that's, that's unnecessary, unnecessary.
- 28:51Speaker 1: All right, Brandon, thank you for calling us today here
- 28:53Speaker 1: on Pastor's Perspective. We've got to take a quick break.
- 28:56Speaker 1: We'll be back with more of your questions, more of
- 28:58Speaker 1: your calls. 888-564-6173 is the number to call. We've got
- 29:03Speaker 1: Pastor Phil Metzger and Pastor Aaron Hale here in the
- 29:07Speaker 1: studio today. Phil's the pastor of Calvary San Diego, and
- 29:10Speaker 1: Aaron's the pastor.
- 29:11Speaker 1: of Calvary Chapel Foothill Ranch in Lake Forest, and we
- 29:14Speaker 1: can't wait to speak with you. We don't have your
- 29:17Speaker 1: phone number, so you need to call us. Our phone
- 29:19Speaker 1: number is 888-564-6173. If you're watching on Facebook, YouTube, or Instagram,
- 29:24Speaker 1: you can call too. The number's right there on the
- 29:27Speaker 1: bottom of your screen, 888-564-6173.
- 30:16Speaker 1: Hey, we're back on Pastor's Perspective. 888-564-6173 is the number
- 30:22Speaker 1: to call us. We're gonna be in the studio until
- 30:24Speaker 1: 4 o'clock, so call in. We've got Pastor Phil Metzger
- 30:28Speaker 1: from Calvary, San Diego, and Pastor Aaron Hale from Calvary Chapel.
- 30:33Speaker 1: Don't tell me, uh, hold on. Foothill Ranch. I was
- 30:36Speaker 1: thinking I was still that dumb joke that I told
- 30:38Speaker 1: half an hour ago was back in my head in
- 30:40Speaker 1: your head, yeah, so I thought I was gonna say
- 30:42Speaker 1: it again. We're changing the name actually. Oh, perfect, legitimately to,
- 30:46Speaker 1: to what I said, which I don't want to say. Oh,
- 30:49Speaker 1: you are actually changing, but not to what I said,
- 30:51Speaker 1: not to what I said. No. Is there a spoiler
- 30:53Speaker 1: that you're gonna give, or no? It's no, I can't,
- 30:55Speaker 1: I can't. It's like naming a baby. You gotta keep
- 30:57Speaker 1: that to yourself for a while. Yeah, we're still figuring
- 30:59Speaker 1: it out, so.
- 31:01Speaker 1: to tell us. Yes, yes. Although we could, uh, help
- 31:04Speaker 1: name the church, you know, you can have people call in. Yes, yes,
- 31:09Speaker 1: people can call in, tell us why. I did ask
- 31:11Speaker 1: the church to pray with me about it this past Sunday.
- 31:14Speaker 1: So for now it's Calvary Chapel Foothill Ranch in Lake Forest.
- 31:18Speaker 2: 888-564-6173
- 31:21Speaker 1: is our number. Let's go to Sam Perdue and speak
- 31:23Speaker 1: with Lotus. Welcome to Pastor's perspective. What did you want
- 31:27Speaker 1: to ask Phil and Aaron?
- 31:29Speaker 2: Well, actually, it's not really a question, but it's a
- 31:33Speaker 2: more observation. A lot of people are speaking around about AI. Well,
- 31:40Speaker 2: if you go to Joshua 8 chapter, it'll tell you
- 31:45Speaker 2: what the Lord did to AI.
- 31:48Speaker 2: And what Joshua did to you, it's
- 31:51Speaker 2: He utterly destroyed AI.
- 31:54Speaker 2: Ah, AI is a
- 31:58Speaker 2: It's an artificial intelligence, and anything that's artificial is an
- 32:03Speaker 2: offense to God, so
- 32:05Speaker 2: Uh, AI is artificial intelligence, and the Lord had Joshua
- 32:13Speaker 2: destroy the whole city.
- 32:16Speaker 1: Phil, what would you say to Lotus? Well, I, I
- 32:19Speaker 1: understand what you're saying, Lotus. I get your, I get
- 32:21Speaker 1: the kind of, you're, you're using that when what we
- 32:24Speaker 1: would call like allegorically, you're you're, you're drawing the, the
- 32:27Speaker 1: the name of the town. The town is actually pronounced AE,
- 32:31Speaker 1: so it's actually not pronounced AI, that's just English, uh, translation,
- 32:37Speaker 1: so I, so not to burst the bubble on this
- 32:40Speaker 1: like fun idea, but it's not there in scripture.
- 32:44Speaker 1: Lotus, it's um, it's not, this is not the Bible
- 32:47Speaker 1: giving us some, some kind of like insight into the
- 32:50Speaker 1: uh future of artificial intelligence. This is, this is just
- 32:56Speaker 1: happens to be the same letters.
- 33:00Speaker 1: Yeah, I don't think I would add to that thing.
- 33:02Speaker 1: Is it Aaron Aaron is what it is. I've seen it.
- 33:08Speaker 1: It's Aaron. But yeah, I mean, pronunciation does matter, right?
- 33:12Speaker 1: So for this case, this is an important kind of
- 33:14Speaker 1: a distinction that like, because we pronounce things in English
- 33:17Speaker 1: is not, does not mean that's how it was pronounced,
- 33:20Speaker 1: you know, even the name Jesus, right, where we know
- 33:22Speaker 1: that's not how they pronounced it back and that's, that's
- 33:25Speaker 1: an English expression of of Jesus' name. So.
- 33:29Speaker 1: Um, just to kind of make that clear, Lotus, that
- 33:31Speaker 1: all those names, Joshua was Yeshua, so we're talking about
- 33:34Speaker 1: a different name. Um, AI was not AI. It's IE IE.
- 33:39Speaker 1: Now we all know. 888-564-6173. Lotus, thanks for your question.
- 33:44Speaker 1: Now here's JJ and San Juan Capistrano. Hello, JJ, what
- 33:48Speaker 1: is your question for Phil and Aaron?
- 33:51Speaker 1: Hey Aaron.
- 33:52Speaker 2: Hey guys,
- 33:56Speaker 2: um, my question was on, well, I wanted to know
- 33:59Speaker 2: your perspective on near death experiences, and I asked because, um,
- 34:05Speaker 2: like a year or two ago, my friend came to
- 34:07Speaker 2: me and asked me about them, and they weren't a
- 34:10Speaker 2: Christian yet, but they, they said that later on they
- 34:13Speaker 2: told me that.
- 34:14Speaker 2: Her, her looking up these videos on YouTube and stuff,
- 34:17Speaker 2: helped her, you know, come to Christ and look at
- 34:19Speaker 2: that because a lot of these people that had MDs
- 34:21Speaker 2: also said that they came to Jesus after that. And I,
- 34:25Speaker 2: and I just, I was, when I told her, and
- 34:27Speaker 2: I was like, I wouldn't put a lot of stock
- 34:29Speaker 2: into it, but I mean, it's interesting. Because when I
- 34:32Speaker 2: was younger, you know, I, I heard stories of that
- 34:34Speaker 2: and there's like some ridiculous characters that were brought up
- 34:38Speaker 2: and stuff. So, you know, I was wondering what you
- 34:40Speaker 2: guys thought. Thank you.
- 34:41Speaker 1: All right, Aaron.
- 34:43Speaker 1: Well, a few things, uh, a few things come to mind, JJ,
- 34:46Speaker 1: and
- 34:49Speaker 1: First of all, there's been, there's been lots of books
- 34:52Speaker 1: written by people who claim to have honestly either gone
- 34:57Speaker 1: to heaven or hell. They write about their experiences and I,
- 35:03Speaker 1: I'll just say at least several of those have ended
- 35:05Speaker 1: up being debunked after the fact. The person came back
- 35:08Speaker 1: and admitted.
- 35:10Speaker 1: Um, that, that in fact it did not take place. Um,
- 35:14Speaker 1: I'm also aware of someone I knew in Bible college
- 35:18Speaker 1: who did have an experience like this, and it was legitimate. They,
- 35:23Speaker 1: they flatlined on the table and, um, and that became
- 35:27Speaker 1: a part of their testimony and they, I, I won't
- 35:30Speaker 1: go into detail on it because I don't remember all
- 35:32Speaker 1: of it. It's not my story.
- 35:35Speaker 1: But it was used for the glory of God, um.
- 35:38Speaker 1: And yet I'm also reminded of Luke chapter 16, the
- 35:44Speaker 1: account of Lazarus and the rich man.
- 35:48Speaker 1: Uh, both of which died and went to, um, Abraham's bosom, that,
- 35:54Speaker 1: that holding place before Christ had died on the cross
- 35:57Speaker 1: and risen again.
- 35:58Speaker 1: And Lazarus, he, he, he begs Abraham that um,
- 36:04Speaker 1: That, uh, he might be able to go back and
- 36:10Speaker 1: share with, um, share with his brothers so that they
- 36:13Speaker 1: would know.
- 36:14Speaker 1: And, and, and, uh, if, if one goes to them
- 36:18Speaker 1: from the dead, they will repent. But he said to me,
- 36:20Speaker 1: Luke 16:31, if they do not hear Moses and the prophets,
- 36:24Speaker 1: neither will they be persuaded though one rise from the dead.
- 36:29Speaker 1: And so there's there's an issue of um of condition
- 36:32Speaker 1: of the heart. And uh I, I think maybe some
- 36:38Speaker 1: uh can be can be encouraged and ministered to.
- 36:41Speaker 1: And others, others not. And yet at the same time,
- 36:46Speaker 1: it's
- 36:47Speaker 1: It's a little bit of a, it's, it's a subjective area. It's,
- 36:50Speaker 1: it's one that can be difficult to discern between the
- 36:52Speaker 1: legitimate and the illegitimate and um.
- 36:57Speaker 1: I'm, I'm not sure I'm able to give a concrete
- 36:59Speaker 1: answer here, so I'm curious what Phil has to say.
- 37:06Speaker 1: I mean, we don't want to walk around as skeptics
- 37:08Speaker 1: to everything that we read, see or hear. On the
- 37:11Speaker 1: other hand, we live at a time, maybe, maybe more
- 37:14Speaker 1: than the world has ever seen, that of like so
- 37:17Speaker 1: much fake news, like so much is fake, and I mean,
- 37:21Speaker 1: to Lotus's call earlier, AI can create just about anything
- 37:25Speaker 1: you want these days, you know, cats jumping off of
- 37:28Speaker 1: the diving board into the pool, you know, and fun stuff,
- 37:31Speaker 1: and then all the way to very serious things that
- 37:33Speaker 1: like make it seem
- 37:35Speaker 1: Uh, very real, but, but I also don't think we
- 37:37Speaker 1: need to walk around, um, so 22 extremes. Let's not
- 37:41Speaker 1: walk around and believe every single thing that we hear
- 37:43Speaker 1: or see as if it's gospel truth. On the other hand,
- 37:45Speaker 1: we don't have to be a bunch of skeptics running
- 37:47Speaker 1: around saying everything that somebody says is probably a lie.
- 37:50Speaker 1: Here's where it lands. Aaron gave a great example. He
- 37:53Speaker 1: knows somebody who had that experience, who's actually shared with
- 37:56Speaker 1: him that testimony, that becomes a really valid expression.
- 38:00Speaker 1: I'm not probably gonna encourage anybody to go out and
- 38:02Speaker 1: buy the books or, you know, watch the movie and
- 38:04Speaker 1: be like, this is the, like the gospel is the
- 38:06Speaker 1: gospel and it's the power of God to salvation.
- 38:09Speaker 1: Everything else is just a testimony, whether that story is
- 38:12Speaker 1: I flatlined and came back to life, or I was
- 38:14Speaker 1: a really good person, but I was dead in my
- 38:16Speaker 1: trespasses and sins, and Jesus brought me back to life.
- 38:19Speaker 1: That's the same story, like that's actually the same story.
- 38:23Speaker 1: One will be made a movie, the other one is
- 38:25Speaker 1: a lot of people's story, and we need to honor
- 38:28Speaker 1: both stories, uh, and not like over-hype, you know, these
- 38:32Speaker 1: kinds of things. So I know we're not giving you
- 38:33Speaker 1: a clean answer there, JJ, but
- 38:35Speaker 1: It sounds like you got some discernment, use it and, um,
- 38:39Speaker 1: you know, give a lot to the gospel and then
- 38:41Speaker 1: a little to everything else. Yeah, you know, I, I just,
- 38:45Speaker 1: I appreciate Phil's encouragement there because sometimes we can forget
- 38:49Speaker 1: that we do serve God who raises the dead. Whether
- 38:52Speaker 1: we mean spiritually or or literally, and we see it
- 38:55Speaker 1: in scripture.
- 38:56Speaker 1: And he is able to do that. It's not necessarily
- 38:59Speaker 1: the normative experience, but it is something that God does. I,
- 39:03Speaker 1: I believe, even still to the present day. Totally, totally. Now, JJ,
- 39:07Speaker 1: did you say that this person came to have faith
- 39:10Speaker 1: in Christ because of these videos and books and everything?
- 39:15Speaker 2: Well, they started to get interested in Jesus and of
- 39:20Speaker 2: course there was some other stuff in their life, but yeah,
- 39:22Speaker 2: this was like a, like some gasoline in the fire,
- 39:26Speaker 2: I guess, you know.
- 39:29Speaker 1: And which is great. I mean again, may God use
- 39:32Speaker 1: all things to bring people to salvation, but again, like
- 39:36Speaker 1: these are teasers to the real thing, which is Jesus, right? Um,
- 39:40Speaker 1: that Jesus, you know, that somebody was raised from the dead,
- 39:44Speaker 1: may they not be the attention, but may it be
- 39:46Speaker 1: the God who raised them from the dead, that's kind
- 39:49Speaker 1: of our, that's our story.
- 39:50Speaker 1: Thanks for your phone call today, JJ. 888-564-6173 is the number.
- 39:56Speaker 1: And now we're gonna go to Cherry Valley and speak
- 39:58Speaker 1: with Sue. Hey, Sue, how are you?
- 40:02Speaker 2: Good afternoon. How are you guys?
- 40:04Speaker 1: Doing well, thanks. What's your question for us today?
- 40:06Speaker 2: OK,
- 40:07Speaker 2: my, I have two questions, but I'll see if I
- 40:10Speaker 2: have enough time for the second one. quick, quick question. Um,
- 40:14Speaker 2: I believe in my heart that my husband is not
- 40:17Speaker 2: a believer. Uh, we've been married 40+ years. Um, a
- 40:22Speaker 2: lot of stuff is coming out now. I've drawn closer
- 40:25Speaker 2: to the Lord. Um, I listened to, uh, Billy Graham.
- 40:30Speaker 2: Um, besides, uh, being involved with my church, um, my
- 40:35Speaker 2: question to you is, I'm starting to bring out questions
- 40:40Speaker 2: to see where he's at, um, knows nothing about the rapture.
- 40:46Speaker 2: Um, the other question, he goes, well, we just don't,
- 40:50Speaker 2: you know, we're not getting along after 40 years. OK,
- 40:54Speaker 2: it's every day, and I'm getting kind, it's just, uh.
- 40:59Speaker 2: Mentally wearing on me. Um, even though I pray and
- 41:04Speaker 2: it's like, Lord, I, I just gotta leave it in
- 41:07Speaker 2: your hands, um, because I'm not understanding what is going
- 41:11Speaker 2: on because I really wanna say stuff, but I just
- 41:14Speaker 2: control my tongue.
- 41:16Speaker 2: And I'm gonna just leave it in your hands, but.
- 41:20Speaker 2: I said we don't have God in our marriage. He
- 41:23Speaker 2: should be number one in our marriage. And he just
- 41:25Speaker 2: like looked at me like, what? No. Then he said,
- 41:31Speaker 2: and I says, well, the Bible, you know, this scripture
- 41:34Speaker 2: and this scripture, he says, I only, uh, I only believe, mm,
- 41:39Speaker 2: a little bit of the Bible. Mhm.
- 41:43Speaker 2: And I'm just like, OK,
- 41:44Speaker 2: Lord. Quick
- 41:45Speaker 1: question for you, Sue, have you had any kind of
- 41:48Speaker 1: counseling yourself or as a couple?
- 41:51Speaker 2: Uh, he won't go.
- 41:52Speaker 1: OK. What about you yourself though?
- 41:56Speaker 2: Um, I have, it's very hard to find, um, a
- 42:00Speaker 2: woman counselor.
- 42:03Speaker 2: Um
- 42:05Speaker 2: Out in this area, OK.
- 42:09Speaker 1: Let me ask you another question, Sue, for the majority of,
- 42:12Speaker 1: I mean, 40 years is not nothing, that's congratulations, that's
- 42:15Speaker 1: pretty impressive. Um, for most of those years, were you
- 42:19Speaker 1: walking with the Lord, or is this kind of a
- 42:21Speaker 1: new thing as you're kind of growing in the Lord now?
- 42:25Speaker 2: Um, no, I was, I was.
- 42:29Speaker 2: backsliding when I started the first part when we were,
- 42:33Speaker 2: we're married.
- 42:35Speaker 2: And
- 42:37Speaker 2: He wasn't helping the situation. It was more like, I'm gonna, uh,
- 42:41Speaker 2: when the grandkids were starting to be born, oh, is
- 42:44Speaker 2: that the correct, that's not, I shouldn't have said it
- 42:46Speaker 2: that way. Um, we have grandkids, but he was, there
- 42:51Speaker 2: was more attentive attention with them, especially because of the girls. He,
- 42:57Speaker 2: he likes, he, you know, favors girls over the boys. Um,
- 43:02Speaker 2: and there was a
- 43:04Speaker 2: Point for at least 4 or 5 years of I
- 43:08Speaker 2: don't wanna pay attention to you the thing I got
- 43:11Speaker 2: my daughter's in drugs, um, and so everything was over
- 43:16Speaker 2: there so I was by myself and I'd go visit
- 43:19Speaker 2: my mom and dad while they were alive.
- 43:22Speaker 2: Um, and I didn't want to bring my mom in
- 43:25Speaker 2: to sit down and talk with him, but I asked
- 43:28Speaker 2: her just this one time, and he kind of mocked her. Um,
- 43:34Speaker 1: so, Sue, I think that, oh, sorry to cut you
- 43:37Speaker 1: off there, just, um, for, for time's sake, let me
- 43:39Speaker 1: just try to, I mean, number one, we wanna, we,
- 43:43Speaker 1: we are so, you know, we wanna see.
- 43:45Speaker 1: It'd be great to see the Lord work in your
- 43:46Speaker 1: marriage for sure. I think that you have to, and
- 43:49Speaker 1: it's a, it's a good thing for you to recognize
- 43:51Speaker 1: you're coming into a new renewed faith in Jesus, which
- 43:55Speaker 1: is wonderful.
- 43:57Speaker 1: And what you're, you're gonna have to be careful of is, remember,
- 44:00Speaker 1: the majority of your marriage was not centered around Jesus,
- 44:04Speaker 1: so you have to kind of, I don't know how
- 44:07Speaker 1: to say this a better way, soft step into that, uh,
- 44:10Speaker 1: you can't, it's not gonna help your marriage to put
- 44:15Speaker 1: this pressure on your husband that was never there before
- 44:18Speaker 1: from you.
- 44:19Speaker 1: For the Lord. It's great that you're feeling, you know, sometimes,
- 44:22Speaker 1: and this is for all of us, when we get
- 44:24Speaker 1: excited about something, we want everybody else to get excited
- 44:27Speaker 1: about that. And sometimes like we just have to be there,
- 44:30Speaker 1: we just have to, I mean, it's great that you're
- 44:32Speaker 1: getting back with the Lord, that's what God wants for you.
- 44:35Speaker 1: And I would love to encourage you, and then I'll
- 44:37Speaker 1: hand it over. I'd love to encourage you if, if,
- 44:42Speaker 1: if working on your marriage could be not as much
- 44:44Speaker 1: about having to try to like make your husband want
- 44:47Speaker 1: to walk with God, but about, listen, um, when we
- 44:51Speaker 1: raise kids, we're distracted by the kids. Then we get
- 44:53Speaker 1: the grandkids and we're distracted by the grandkids, and then
- 44:55Speaker 1: one day we don't got those and we're like, do
- 44:57Speaker 1: we even like each other? That's where you're at, and
- 45:00Speaker 1: it's OK to just, just to get back to liking
- 45:03Speaker 1: each other.
- 45:05Speaker 1: And you need the Lord to do that, but you
- 45:07Speaker 1: need the Lord to do that. He's not there yet.
- 45:08Speaker 1: You guys gotta work on just liking each other again.
- 45:11Speaker 1: God wants you to finish this life together, um, and strong,
- 45:15Speaker 1: and I think that if you can just like, let's
- 45:17Speaker 1: be friends again, let's focus on that, definitely find yourself
- 45:20Speaker 1: a counselor that could help you with this.
- 45:22Speaker 1: And um I'll stop talking. I don't know, Erin, if
- 45:24Speaker 1: you had anything else to add into that. I just
- 45:26Speaker 1: wanted to suggest to Sue that she said she couldn't
- 45:28Speaker 1: find a counselor in her area, a woman counselor. A
- 45:31Speaker 1: lot of these counselors now can do stuff online like
- 45:34Speaker 1: they can do Zoom, yeah, so yeah, ideally maybe you'd
- 45:38Speaker 1: want to be in an office with someone, but you
- 45:41Speaker 1: might be able to find someone who can do something online. Uh,
- 45:44Speaker 1: maybe contact New Life Ministries. They can help you with that.
- 45:46Speaker 1: 1-800-NewLife or newlife.com. Aaron, what would you suggest for Sue?
- 45:51Speaker 1: Yeah, um, did, did Sue say that she's, she goes
- 45:55Speaker 1: to a church, she has a church home. Sue, do
- 45:57Speaker 1: you have a church that you're attending? Oh, you do. OK.
- 46:01Speaker 1: I was gonna, I was gonna suggest Calvary Chapel, Beaumont.
- 46:03Speaker 1: If not, it's real close by. I, I know they've
- 46:06Speaker 1: got some, some great ladies there that could invest in
- 46:10Speaker 1: you and encourage you in this. Um,
- 46:14Speaker 2: can you point me to, um, a couple ladies up there.
- 46:17Speaker 2: Um, now, I was trying to think where Calvary Chapel
- 46:21Speaker 2: because I thought it was on Bowmant Avenue, but I'm
- 46:23Speaker 2: not
- 46:23Speaker 2: quite sure.
- 46:24Speaker 1: I'm not positive of the location, but if you were
- 46:27Speaker 1: to show up there and go to the women's ministry,
- 46:30Speaker 1: they will connect you with a, uh, with a small group, and,
- 46:34Speaker 1: and you'll be, you'll be ministered too. I know the
- 46:37Speaker 1: pastor and his wife, they're great people. That's Henry Lundy's.
- 46:40Speaker 1: That's right. That's right, Pastor Henry Lundy, and, uh, and Chantelle,
- 46:44Speaker 1: I think is his wife, um.
- 46:46Speaker 1: So, Phil mentioned having fun together. And sometimes that that
- 46:51Speaker 1: is such an important step when a marriage is struggling.
- 46:55Speaker 1: Sometimes you have to set aside the things that you
- 46:58Speaker 1: see as the bigger issues and just get back to
- 47:00Speaker 1: the basics. What it, what did it look like 40
- 47:04Speaker 1: years ago, which might just seem like a whole other world. But,
- 47:07Speaker 1: but let's, let's take a walk together. Let's just do
- 47:10Speaker 1: something fun or enjoyable.
- 47:14Speaker 1: And on your own, and in your own heart before
- 47:17Speaker 1: the Lord, you are pouring out that heart to God
- 47:20Speaker 1: on behalf of your husband. You're crying out to him,
- 47:22Speaker 1: you're involved in the women's ministry, you're being encouraged, built up,
- 47:26Speaker 1: maybe you find, you know, a good female, uh, biblical counselor,
- 47:31Speaker 1: as we've been talking about, and Brian encouraged you on.
- 47:34Speaker 1: But just investing in the marriage, because my, my brain
- 47:38Speaker 1: goes to 1 Peter chapter 3 where the um
- 47:44Speaker 1: Wives are encouraged to be a a a witness through their, um, actually,
- 47:50Speaker 1: maybe that's Corinthians that I'm thinking of, but first Peter
- 47:52Speaker 1: talks about it too.
- 47:54Speaker 1: Being a witness through your behavior, through your conduct, through
- 47:58Speaker 1: your walk with Christ, and it goes the other way too,
- 48:02Speaker 1: but there's a lot that can be said through your
- 48:08Speaker 1: decision to be patient with your husband, to love him,
- 48:13Speaker 1: to invest in him, to look past the inadequacies and
- 48:17Speaker 1: the problems, and choose to honor him as the man
- 48:21Speaker 1: that God has put in your life.
- 48:24Speaker 1: And
- 48:25Speaker 1: Ask God to use that as a way to open,
- 48:29Speaker 1: open some, some fissures of grace in his life that
- 48:34Speaker 1: whereby God might be able to do a deeper work, um.
- 48:39Speaker 1: We have to remember though, when, when it's taken us
- 48:42Speaker 1: a long time to get to a certain place in life.
- 48:46Speaker 1: The the way out is not necessarily overnight or in
- 48:49Speaker 1: a moment. Sometimes it's, it's, it's a period of of
- 48:55Speaker 1: prolonged faithfulness, trusting God, believing him, investing the work and
- 49:01Speaker 1: and trusting God by his spirit to do what we
- 49:04Speaker 1: cannot on our own.
- 49:05Speaker 1: Sue, thanks for calling in today. Everybody watching and listening
- 49:08Speaker 1: is gonna be praying for you and your husband. Thanks
- 49:10Speaker 1: for calling in today to Pastor's Perspective. Let's go to
- 49:13Speaker 1: Newport Beach. Here is Brandon. You are on with Phil
- 49:16Speaker 1: Metzger and Aaron Hale. Brandon, welcome.
- 49:20Speaker 2: Hey guys, thanks for taking my call. Appreciate it. Hey,
- 49:22Speaker 2: real quick, so there's a lot of podcasts lately. It's
- 49:25Speaker 2: in the last couple of years with um whistleblowers coming
- 49:28Speaker 2: out talking about aliens, um, and I just was curious,
- 49:32Speaker 2: how would if, let's say hypothetically there was a disclosure
- 49:35Speaker 2: and the government said, hey, there's aliens that live among us,
- 49:38Speaker 2: you know, a lot of whistleblowers, I, I, uh, they say,
- 49:42Speaker 2: oh well, they've been here a long time. I mean,
- 49:44Speaker 2: is it the Nephilim? Like, would they necessarily be demonic
- 49:48Speaker 2: if there were aliens.
- 49:50Speaker 2: I mean, like, God doesn't have to put everything in
- 49:52Speaker 2: the Bible, right? Like maybe there's alien, we could still
- 49:55Speaker 2: live our faith-based lives, and if there are aliens, you know, I, I,
- 50:00Speaker 2: I would imagine that would jar a lot of people's faith, um,
- 50:02Speaker 2: if there was type of some type of disclosure. I
- 50:05Speaker 2: unders I also understand that in the, in the last days,
- 50:09Speaker 2: you know, God's going to send a deceit, um, a great.
- 50:12Speaker 2: Deception, right, but from what I understand, that's to, to
- 50:15Speaker 2: more non-believers, the ones that maybe didn't get raptured. So
- 50:19Speaker 2: I have all kinds of questions. I'm sure you guys, uh,
- 50:22Speaker 2: answer this question a lot. I'd like to hear your perspective. Yeah,
- 50:25Speaker 1: we get it every now and then, maybe not so
- 50:27Speaker 1: much lately. Lately the thing has been the Ethiopian Bible.
- 50:29Speaker 1: That's what everybody's calling about. I don't think we've had
- 50:32Speaker 1: a call about it this week. I could be wrong, but, uh.
- 50:35Speaker 1: Maybe people finally realized, OK, yeah, I doubt it. We
- 50:38Speaker 1: know everything we need to know about it now. But anyway, aliens,
- 50:41Speaker 1: what say you guys, Phil, um.
- 50:46Speaker 1: Yeah, the idea that it would completely shake our faith
- 50:49Speaker 1: is such a um
- 50:51Speaker 1: You know, that's, that's definitely coming from the world's perspective
- 50:55Speaker 1: of religion, because they see religion is like being held
- 50:59Speaker 1: up by like toothpicks that if one thing were to go,
- 51:02Speaker 1: the whole thing goes down and it's like, if, you know,
- 51:05Speaker 1: and I see that on a lot of podcasts.
- 51:07Speaker 1: Or like, you know, you see it on like Twitter
- 51:09Speaker 1: all the time, like, you know, here's a new video.
- 51:11Speaker 1: By the way, the videos of aliens just stink. I'm
- 51:13Speaker 1: just gonna say it out loud. Can we get one
- 51:17Speaker 1: clear video of an alien or an alien spacecraft, so
- 51:21Speaker 1: that that's a concern to me.
- 51:23Speaker 1: Um, I would, I would, I, I don't put a
- 51:25Speaker 1: lot of stock in that, you know, I think, um,
- 51:28Speaker 1: for whatever you think about Elon Musk, good, bad, you know, whatever,
- 51:32Speaker 1: here's a man that's pretty invested in the space industry,
- 51:35Speaker 1: we can all agree on that, and has, and has
- 51:37Speaker 1: said over and over that he believes that life is
- 51:39Speaker 1: unique to the Earth, and he sees nothing.
- 51:42Speaker 1: Uh, that has pointed him in any other direction. And again,
- 51:44Speaker 1: whether you, of course he's just saying that because he's
- 51:47Speaker 1: part of the conspiracy, he is an alien and therefore
- 51:50Speaker 1: he's avoiding the, uh, yeah, yeah, I mean, you know,
- 51:53Speaker 1: and again, and, but I would say this, like for
- 51:54Speaker 1: those of us, and I would include you, Brandon, in this,
- 51:57Speaker 1: like those of us that are actual believers, nothing is
- 51:59Speaker 1: going to shake our faith, like nothing. If an alien,
- 52:02Speaker 1: if ET were to be true, I'm not gonna go,
- 52:05Speaker 1: oh man, what does that do to Jesus? It changes
- 52:08Speaker 1: absolutely nothing to.
- 52:09Speaker 1: faith, it adds more questions, but you know what, I
- 52:12Speaker 1: got a lot of, the longer I've been a Christian,
- 52:14Speaker 1: the more questions I have. I got tons of questions.
- 52:17Speaker 1: I have not become more knowledgeable in a way that
- 52:20Speaker 1: I can say, it's all definitive now. I don't like
- 52:22Speaker 1: when people talk, so I'm on a show that answers
- 52:24Speaker 1: Bible questions, but we've got a lot of I don't knows,
- 52:27Speaker 1: because God's bigger than we are, and if we ever
- 52:29Speaker 1: lose that sense, we lose everything. God is greater, I'm small,
- 52:34Speaker 1: he is infinite, I am finite.
- 52:37Speaker 1: Aaron, amen.
- 52:40Speaker 1: That's funny, I made that statement just this last Sunday,
- 52:42Speaker 1: but I, it was second service. I was tired and
- 52:44Speaker 1: I reversed it and said God was finite and I was.
- 52:49Speaker 1: That's not good. Uh, anyhow, Brandon, your question, are aliens
- 52:55Speaker 1: from outer space real? Does it fit in biblically?
- 53:00Speaker 1: So I've watched lots of videos on this subject, and
- 53:06Speaker 1: I've seen how the discussion has shifted away from aliens
- 53:11Speaker 1: being corporeal physical beings to being interdimensional beings.
- 53:17Speaker 1: And there are testimonies of them communicating telepathically, and there
- 53:23Speaker 1: are
- 53:25Speaker 1: Um, observations about them communicating about things that have to
- 53:29Speaker 1: do with our, our origins and where we came from, uh,
- 53:34Speaker 1: contradicting what we read in Genesis. And I think without
- 53:40Speaker 1: having seen anything or experienced anything personally, and not knowing
- 53:44Speaker 1: for sure, um,
- 53:47Speaker 1: Phil said, you know, some of the evidence so-called is,
- 53:50Speaker 1: is suspect at this point or not super clear, but,
- 53:55Speaker 1: but there are a lot of people that have had
- 53:59Speaker 1: personal experiences.
- 54:01Speaker 1: And I, I am inclined to see it as a
- 54:05Speaker 1: spiritual reality. It does get a little complicated when it
- 54:08Speaker 1: crosses over into the physical, but that's not unprecedented in,
- 54:12Speaker 1: in scripture. Um, I, I don't know or understand Satan's
- 54:16Speaker 1: full ability to manipulate matter and how that fits in,
- 54:23Speaker 1: but
- 54:24Speaker 1: When I, when I hear or read about alien interactions
- 54:30Speaker 1: that begin to either contradict scripture or have a spiritual
- 54:37Speaker 1: element or dynamic to them, it definitely makes me
- 54:41Speaker 1: Look and say, OK, these, these could very well be
- 54:45Speaker 1: beings from another dimension. Ephesians 6 seems to talk about that,
- 54:50Speaker 1: and there, there appears to be a, a, a willingness
- 54:53Speaker 1: and even a desire from that area to draw attention
- 54:59Speaker 1: away from a, a biblical faith. I don't consider myself
- 55:05Speaker 1: an expert in this area, but
- 55:08Speaker 1: Time spent on Instagram and YouTube. Well, you're as much
- 55:11Speaker 1: of an expert as everybody else out there.
- 55:14Speaker 1: Brandon, thanks for your phone call today here on Pastor's Perspective.
- 55:17Speaker 1: And if you are an alien visiting our planet and
- 55:20Speaker 1: you happen to be in the Orange County area or
- 55:23Speaker 1: San Diego area, you can visit one of these two
- 55:25Speaker 1: churches this weekend. There's Calvary Chapel Foothill Ranch in Lake
- 55:29Speaker 1: Forest or Calvary San Diego. Thanks for listening to K
- 55:32Speaker 1: Wave and uh keep on listening, and maybe you can
- 55:35Speaker 1: call tomorrow with a question that.
- 55:36Speaker 1: You might have about the Bible, the Christian faith. Yes,
- 55:39Speaker 1: get yourself a Bible. Stop by the chapel store at
- 55:41Speaker 1: the Calvary Chapel Costa Mesa campus and, and buy a
- 55:44Speaker 1: Bible and read it and then call us with your questions.
- 55:47Speaker 1: And I'm being a little bit facetious here, but I'm
- 55:49Speaker 1: just having fun. God bless you guys. Phil and Aaron,
- 55:53Speaker 1: great being on today. Thank you for being on today,
- 55:55Speaker 1: I should say. We'll talk to you tomorrow right here
- 55:57Speaker 1: on Pastor's Perspective.
