- 0:33I am Mariah Mohammed, writer
- 0:34and moderator with Becker's Healthcare.
- 0:36I'm absolutely thrilled to have with me today, Anne Dowdell,
- 0:40vice President and Chief Diversity and Equity
- 0:43and Inclusion Officer for Houston Methodist.
- 0:46Uh, it's very nice to have you on the
- 0:47podcast today. How are you?
- 0:49- I'm doing fine, thank you. How are you
- 0:50doing? Thanks for having me. Good.
- 0:51- Yes, absolutely. I know you've been on our podcast before
- 0:54and it's so nice to have you back.
- 0:56Um, to get us started,
- 0:57would you mind please sharing a quick introduction
- 1:00and a overview of your role?
- 1:02- Sure. So as you mentioned, my name is Arian Dowdell.
- 1:05I'm the Vice President and Chief Diversity Equity
- 1:07and Inclusion Officer for all
- 1:09of the Houston Methodist Hospitals.
- 1:11Um, in my role as DEI officer.
- 1:14Um, just to give a little context,
- 1:16our department was actually formed back in the
- 1:18summer of 2020.
- 1:19And so in my role, I'm actually responsible
- 1:21for leading the vision for unparalleled safety,
- 1:24quality service
- 1:26and innovation through the lens of diversity, equity,
- 1:28and inclusion, which really means, um, leading
- 1:31through system-wide, DEI strategies
- 1:34and implementations with our key partners both
- 1:36internally and externally.
- 1:38So that includes different events
- 1:40and programs around, uh, our employees,
- 1:43our patient experience, as well
- 1:45as our external DEI relationships and grants.
- 1:48And then also a lens on health equity as well.
- 1:52- Yeah, wonderful. Thank you so much
- 1:54for giving us that overview.
- 1:55So to really get into, uh, our topic
- 1:58and discussion for today, the first thing I wanted
- 2:00to ask you is how do you think the healthcare DEI landscape
- 2:04has changed over the past year or so?
- 2:06There have been many things that have changed in
- 2:08society-wise and organization-wise since your organization
- 2:12has started it's DEI journey.
- 2:14- Yeah, you know, I think for us, we really, uh,
- 2:16were strategic in how we laid out and thought about DEI.
- 2:20And I think for a lot of, uh, healthcare organizations
- 2:23and just in general in various industries, DEI has evolved.
- 2:26But for our department
- 2:28and at Houston Methodist, we wanted to make sure
- 2:31for like the first, you know, one to three years
- 2:33that we started this department, we spent a lot
- 2:36of time around awareness.
- 2:37You know, that was our awareness building time.
- 2:39And now that we're past year three
- 2:41and moving on, we're thinking about what's next for us.
- 2:44And that really is where you start to think about
- 2:46how do we embed those teachings
- 2:48and learnings into our primary business goals
- 2:51of our organization.
- 2:53Um, and we feel like we're really at
- 2:55that point now where we can do that.
- 2:56So, you know, the first couple
- 2:57of years we were building our employee resource groups.
- 3:00We were awarding the first of our $25 million grant, uh,
- 3:04for diversity, equity and inclusion and health equity.
- 3:07And now that's shifting a little bit.
- 3:08So we have data now, which we didn't have years ago,
- 3:11and we can look at outcomes, um,
- 3:13including our employee engagement and retention
- 3:16and promotions, um, to see how we're evolving
- 3:19to make sure the work we did
- 3:20and the foundation we laid for those first three years
- 3:23is really coming to fruition.
- 3:24So, um, you know, I say sometimes
- 3:27that if I change the words diversity, equity, and inclusion
- 3:30and change it to any other three words, the work we still do
- 3:34would be the same and the need is still there.
- 3:36So I think it's been a challenge for some organizations.
- 3:40I'm thankful that at Houston Methodist, you know,
- 3:42the work we do is still at the forefront of everything we do
- 3:45and it's aligned with our eyecare values
- 3:47and our goal to always stay ahead with innovation
- 3:50and keep that at the forefront of our patient care.
- 3:54- Yeah, absolutely. Thank you so much
- 3:55for giving us that insight.
- 3:57And like I said,
- 3:58a lot has changed over the past couple years.
- 4:01What do you think is the biggest opportunity
- 4:03for healthcare organ organizations when it comes to DEI?
- 4:07- You know, I think there's a lot, you know, as you said,
- 4:09the landscape has changed.
- 4:10A lot of organizations have taken a huge hit, right?
- 4:13Whether it's from downsizing to mandated requirements, um,
- 4:18but not enough resources.
- 4:20But I think, um, one of the biggest opportunities is
- 4:22for organizations to understand that DEI has
- 4:25to remain a core business imperative in all that we do.
- 4:28Um, and the big thing is understanding
- 4:30that the work we do doesn't cost anything, right?
- 4:33There's not a dollar figure associated with making sure
- 4:37that we're providing opportunities to people
- 4:40to grow within the organization
- 4:42or making sure that we're understanding the individuality
- 4:45that comes with everyone.
- 4:46So there's a lot that we do when you think about DEI
- 4:48that really doesn't cost anything.
- 4:51And so I think that's one of the things
- 4:52that we've lost focus on.
- 4:54I also think one of the biggest opportunities
- 4:56for healthcare organizations when I think about this is
- 4:59to make sure that their DEI leaders
- 5:03have truly an opportunity to be at the forefront
- 5:05of the change that's happening.
- 5:07Because without that, and with so many DEI leaders
- 5:10actually not staying in positions more than two years,
- 5:13it's become, you know, increasingly difficult.
- 5:15Um, and I'd also say the political landscape, you know,
- 5:18makes things tough as well with new requirements,
- 5:20not enough resources for organizations, they're struggling
- 5:23to figure out health equity, um, and how to move forward
- 5:27and make changes in patient access
- 5:29and patient outcomes if they don't have the resources.
- 5:32And so I think there's a lot of different things
- 5:34that we have to think about, you know, as organizations
- 5:37to make sure that we do keep it at the forefront of
- 5:40what we do because the reality is that our patients as well
- 5:43as our employees, have options right when it comes
- 5:46to healthcare at this point.
- 5:47And so this really needs to continue to be at the forefront
- 5:50of the work that we do every day.
- 5:55- Yeah, I completely agree. Agree.
- 5:57Would you be able to share a few programs
- 5:59or initiatives Houston Methodist is focusing on
- 6:02as we enter 2024?
- 6:05- Sure. You know, we have a couple of things
- 6:06that we're super excited about.
- 6:08I'll name maybe just a few for you,
- 6:10but one of the things we're very proud
- 6:11of is our DEI Summer Scholars Program.
- 6:14We're going into our third year
- 6:16and we've awarded, um, money to students
- 6:19to do a 10 week program.
- 6:20And so those are for non, uh, clinical careers in healthcare
- 6:24and they're for rising juniors and seniors.
- 6:26So we're excited to go into this third year
- 6:28and see that momentum continue.
- 6:30We also are focusing on our physicians
- 6:32and our physician communication going into 2024.
- 6:36And what's really nice about that is that we're partnering
- 6:38with a lot of different departments,
- 6:40including our spiritual care department, our quality
- 6:42and patient safety, and other groups
- 6:45around the organization, uh, to make sure
- 6:47that when patients come in, even that communication piece
- 6:50between our physicians
- 6:52and patients is really at its maximum to ensure, um,
- 6:56that our patients continue
- 6:57to have fantastic health outcomes.
- 7:00We're also continuing to work on health equity
- 7:02to reduce health disparities.
- 7:04And so we have several committees
- 7:05that we're focused on health equity
- 7:07and have done a fantastic job as well.
- 7:09But this year we'll actually be putting out a report
- 7:11for the first time to talk about the work that's being done,
- 7:14because tackling health equity is so complex,
- 7:17and so we hope to use that as a guide, um,
- 7:20not just at Houston Methodist,
- 7:21but for other organizations to use on
- 7:23how we're addressing health equity.
- 7:25And I think the last one, um,
- 7:27to mention is we've also set up a partnership
- 7:30with Best Buddies International, where we're making sure
- 7:33that we're providing individuals that have intellectual
- 7:36and developmental disabilities
- 7:37and opportunity to work in healthcare.
- 7:40You know, we talk oftentimes about other areas of, um,
- 7:43groups that we need to employ,
- 7:44but making sure that we have candidates of all backgrounds,
- 7:48um, as well as those that have intellectual
- 7:51and developmental disabilities to make sure they're,
- 7:54they know that they can be employed at Houston Methodist.
- 7:56And so those are just a couple of the programs
- 7:58and initiatives that we're doing.
- 7:59There's a lot more, but I'd say those
- 8:01are probably some of the top ones.
- 8:03- Yeah. How amazing are those partnerships
- 8:06and avenues your DEI are going to,
- 8:08that's absolutely amazing to hear.
- 8:10Um, and before I let you go
- 8:12and, you know, enjoy the rest of your day,
- 8:13the last thing I wanted to ask you is
- 8:15what keeps you motivated
- 8:16or engaged in the work that you do every single day?
- 8:20- Um, that's a good question as well.
- 8:22Um, you know, this work is both emotionally
- 8:25and mentally challenging on a daily basis
- 8:27because we don't always get to see, you know, those results
- 8:31of the hard work that we put in day in and day out.
- 8:33But I think, you know, one of the things
- 8:35that makes me the happiest is when I hear the stories about,
- 8:39um, how great the members of my teams are
- 8:41and how they've made a difference in someone's life.
- 8:43We have employee resource groups, uh, we have 10 of them,
- 8:47five of our chairs have received promotions,
- 8:49and that's part of the reason we've created those ERGs
- 8:52to make sure that people have leadership opportunities.
- 8:56Uh, you know, when I walk through the halls
- 8:57and see us celebrating various cultures in an open
- 9:01environment where everyone is accepted, you know,
- 9:03those are the things that keep me motivated.
- 9:05And then also, you know, when people
- 9:07that are coming into the industry now have this strong
- 9:10interest in DEI and health equity, that keeps me motivated.
- 9:13And knowing that the work I'm doing now will continue on
- 9:17for many years to come long after, you know, I'm gone.
- 9:20So not just one thing,
- 9:22but lots of things, um, among the fact
- 9:24that we do stay tired,
- 9:25but we do stay motivated and keep pressing on.
- 9:29- Yes, absolutely. Thank you so much, folks. Final thoughts.
- 9:32This has been definitely an amazing
- 9:34and informative discussion.
- 9:36So again, I wanna thank you so much
- 9:37for coming back on Becker's Healthcare
- 9:39and I look forward to connecting with you again soon.
- 9:41- Thanks so much. I look forward to speaking
- 9:43with you soon, and thanks for having me.

- 9:50to keep learning, stay sharp, grow their networks,
