- Lucas: Welcome back to Learn French with Fexingo. I'm Lucas. Luna: And I'm Luna. Hey, Lucas, last time we did ordinal numbers from 16th to 20th. I feel like I can finally count floors in a building. Lucas: Right. And today we're going a bit higher: ordinal numbers from 21st to 25th. Ready? Luna: Yes. Bring it on. Lucas: Okay. So 21st in French is vingt et unième. Say that after me: vingt et unième. Luna: Vingt et unième. Lucas: Good. Vingt et unième. Notice the 'et' between vingt and unième. Luna: Yeah, I remember that from numbers 21 and 31 too. Lucas: Exactly. Now 22nd: vingt-deuxième. Repeat: vingt-deuxième. Luna: Vingt-deuxième. That one's straightforward. Lucas: Yes. For 23rd: vingt-troisième. Try it. Luna: Vingt-troisième. Lucas: 24th: vingt-quatrième. Luna: Vingt-quatrième. That sounds like 'quatre' with a twist. Lucas: Right. And 25th: vingt-cinquième. Luna: Vingt-cinquième. That one's fun to say. Lucas: Now let's use them in a tiny story. Imagine you're in a building. Which floor? First floor is le premier étage, but for ordinal numbers we can say le vingt et unième étage for the 21st floor. Luna: Le vingt et unième étage. That's a tall building. Lucas: Or le vingt-deuxième étage, le vingt-troisième étage. You get the idea. Luna: Right. So if I'm on the 23rd floor, I say je suis au vingt-troisième étage. Lucas: Perfect. Je suis au vingt-troisième étage. Great sentence. Luna: And for 24th: je suis au vingt-quatrième étage. Lucas: Yes. Let's practice all five once more. Repeat after me: vingt et unième. Luna: Vingt et unième. Lucas: Vingt-deuxième. Luna: Vingt-deuxième. Lucas: Vingt-troisième. Luna: Vingt-troisième. Lucas: Vingt-quatrième. Luna: Vingt-quatrième. Lucas: Vingt-cinquième. Luna: Vingt-cinquième. Lucas: Good. Now let me ask you something. If you have 25 students in a class and you want to say 'the 21st student', how would you say it? Luna: Le vingt et unième étudiant? Or is it la vingt et unième étudiante if it's a girl? Lucas: That's a great point. Unième doesn't change for gender. So both le vingt et unième étudiant and la vingt et unième étudiante work. But for other numbers like deuxième, they also stay the same. So le vingt-deuxième étudiant, la vingt-deuxième étudiante. Luna: Oh that's easier than I thought. Luna: By the way, I've been listening to Fexingo on my commute and it really helps. No ads, just learning. That's so nice. Lucas: Yeah, we keep it ad-free because we think it's better for learning. If Fexingo has been helping you make progress with French, you can support that choice at buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo. Luna: Absolutely. Every little bit helps keep the show going. So, back to our numbers. Can you give me another example sentence? Lucas: Sure. Imagine you're running a race and you finish 22nd. You could say: je suis arrivé vingt-deuxième. Luna: Je suis arrivé vingt-deuxième. That's for a male speaker. For female: je suis arrivée vingt-deuxième. Lucas: Exactly. Good catch. Let's practice that with all five. I'll say the number, you make a sentence with 'je suis arrivé'. Start with 21st. Luna: Je suis arrivé vingt et unième. Lucas: 22nd. Luna: Je suis arrivé vingt-deuxième. Lucas: 23rd. Luna: Je suis arrivé vingt-troisième. Lucas: 24th. Luna: Je suis arrivé vingt-quatrième. Lucas: 25th. Luna: Je suis arrivé vingt-cinquième. Lucas: Excellent. Now let's do a quick review of all five. Say them with me: vingt et unième, vingt-deuxième, vingt-troisième, vingt-quatrième, vingt-cinquième. Luna: Vingt et unième, vingt-deuxième, vingt-troisième, vingt-quatrième, vingt-cinquième. Lucas: Perfect. You've got them. And remember, you can use these for floors, positions in a race, items in a list, anything. Luna: Yeah, I can finally say I'm on the 22nd floor of my imaginary building. Lucas: That's the spirit. Keep practicing, and next time we'll go even higher. Thanks for joining us on Learn French with Fexingo. Luna: See you next episode. Practice these till we chat again. Lucas: Au revoir. Luna: Au revoir.
