- 0:05Speaker 1: Welcome back to the Richard Sherman podcast and this time
- 0:08Speaker 1: it's the AFC preview last year there were a lot
- 0:11Speaker 1: of surprises in the AFC you had the New England
- 0:14Speaker 1: Patriots make it to the Super Bowl you had the
- 0:16Speaker 1: Denver Broncos really really you have a great shot at
- 0:19Speaker 1: it until Bo Nix gets hurt I think this year
- 0:23Speaker 1: You got to expect Patrick Mahomes to factor in. You
- 0:26Speaker 1: got to expect Joe Burrow to factor in. You got
- 0:27Speaker 1: to expect Lamar Jackson and that new staff to factor
- 0:31Speaker 1: in to this equation. And I think there could be
- 0:34Speaker 1: some fun. Will the Texans get back? Will C.J. Stroud
- 0:37Speaker 1: find his magic back? Mitchell, there's some fun, fun, fun
- 0:42Speaker 1: factors in the AFC.
- 0:44Speaker 2: The AFC should be a lot of fun. Let's take
- 0:47Speaker 2: a look at the AFC East, Richard, which is one
- 0:50Speaker 2: of the surprise teams you were alluding to. The New
- 0:53Speaker 2: England Patriots came out of nowhere, shocked the NFL landscape,
- 0:56Speaker 2: made it all the way to the Super Bowl. You
- 0:58Speaker 2: need to get blown out by your Seattle Seahawks. That
- 1:02Speaker 2: being said, I think they recognize their deficiencies. They bring
- 1:05Speaker 2: in A.J. Brown from the Philadelphia Eagles. obviously, and then
- 1:09Speaker 2: Romeo Dobbs, another guy that kind of went under the
- 1:12Speaker 2: radar in that acquisition in the offseason. And then the Bills,
- 1:16Speaker 2: you know, address their deficiencies at wide receiver, bring in
- 1:19Speaker 2: DJ Moore. Then we got to talk about the Jets.
- 1:24Speaker 2: Geno Smith comes back to town. And then down in Miami,
- 1:28Speaker 2: Malik Willis showed a lot of promise in Green Bay.
- 1:31Speaker 2: Can he bring that magic to Miami? They're going to
- 1:33Speaker 2: need a lot of magic, something tells me, Richard. Who
- 1:37Speaker 2: do you have coming out on top of this division
- 1:39Speaker 2: in the AFC East?
- 1:42Speaker 1: In the AFC East, I just, I want to believe
- 1:44Speaker 1: in the Patriots. I want to believe last year wasn't
- 1:47Speaker 1: a fluke. It wasn't an aberration that Mike Vrabel has
- 1:50Speaker 1: it together, that this team can continue to be a
- 1:53Speaker 1: contender for years and years. But I do think there
- 1:55Speaker 1: was a bit of, you know, some scheduling luck there.
- 1:58Speaker 1: They had some favorable draws and they took advantage as
- 2:01Speaker 1: they should. And they deserve all the credit in the world.
- 2:03Speaker 1: This year, it's going to be a much different schedule.
- 2:06Speaker 1: much more challenging, much more challenging for a young Drake May,
- 2:09Speaker 1: but they also have A.J. Brown, and they have A.J. Brown,
- 2:12Speaker 1: who's an established veteran, really, really, I mean, been a
- 2:15Speaker 1: top five receiver in this league at times in his career,
- 2:18Speaker 1: sometimes considered one of the best receivers in the National
- 2:20Speaker 1: Football League. Can he regain his form that some people
- 2:24Speaker 1: in Philadelphia will say he lost? You know, there's a
- 2:28Speaker 1: lot of questions. You know, obviously, Mike Vrabel had a
- 2:31Speaker 1: very adventurous offseason, and You know, will that have any
- 2:34Speaker 1: effect on his coaching career? Coaching this year, I highly doubt.
- 2:38Speaker 1: But there will be some uncomfortable questions that he has
- 2:41Speaker 1: to answer. And, you know, throughout the season, I'm sure
- 2:43Speaker 1: some jokes will be made. But I think the Buffalo
- 2:47Speaker 1: Bills and their new stadium, new energy, feeling good. Obviously,
- 2:54Speaker 1: I felt like last year, if Josh Allen was going
- 2:57Speaker 1: to win the Super Bowl, it should have been last
- 2:58Speaker 1: year when You know, you don't have any of those
- 3:01Speaker 1: top five quarterbacks in the final show. You didn't have
- 3:04Speaker 1: a Patrick Mahomes, a Lamar to deal with. You didn't
- 3:06Speaker 1: have a Joe Burrow. Like, the best quarterback in the AFC,
- 3:11Speaker 1: by any stretch of the imagination, anybody can argue, was
- 3:14Speaker 1: Josh Allen. And unfortunately, you know, you can say it
- 3:18Speaker 1: was some questionable calls or, you know, some things that
- 3:21Speaker 1: could have gone either way, but they lost that game.
- 3:24Speaker 1: And he didn't make it. He didn't make the Super
- 3:26Speaker 1: Bowl again, even in a playoff field that did not
- 3:28Speaker 1: have those quarterbacks that we just mentioned in it. So
- 3:32Speaker 1: I think they can win the AFC East. You know,
- 3:37Speaker 1: I think they can figure out a way to quell
- 3:40Speaker 1: the Patriots, even though the Patriots had their number last year.
- 3:43Speaker 1: I think they find a way this year. You know,
- 3:45Speaker 1: they got some more weapons like we talked about. And,
- 3:48Speaker 1: you know, maybe a renewed energy from Josh Allen. I think,
- 3:51Speaker 1: you know, the playmakers have been there offensively. Can they
- 3:53Speaker 1: get stops defensively? I think they can. I think they
- 3:57Speaker 1: win this AFC East.
- 3:59Speaker 2: I wouldn't be shocked by that either. I don't want
- 4:01Speaker 2: to make some crazy statement here, but I feel like
- 4:04Speaker 2: I have to make it. You alluded to it. The Patriots, man,
- 4:07Speaker 2: that schedule, and we predicted it, I think, eight weeks
- 4:10Speaker 2: in advance when we looked at that schedule as it
- 4:13Speaker 2: ran out. And we said, they're about to win seven,
- 4:16Speaker 2: eight games. And sure enough, they did. Now they get
- 4:20Speaker 2: the first place schedule. Things are about to change. A
- 4:23Speaker 2: lot of pressure is going to be on them. What
- 4:25Speaker 2: difference do you think A.J. Brown brings to this offense
- 4:29Speaker 2: in New England?
- 4:31Speaker 1: He brings stability and credibility. I mean, a lot of
- 4:34Speaker 1: what Stephon Diggs brought to this offense, just a guy
- 4:37Speaker 1: that is known and understood to be a true number
- 4:40Speaker 1: one receiver in the National Football League. A.J. Brown is
- 4:43Speaker 1: shown to be dominant at times, a target that Drake
- 4:45Speaker 1: may can just put the ball up and let him
- 4:48Speaker 1: go get it. I think that's something that he's been
- 4:51Speaker 1: throughout his career, and I think he's going to be
- 4:53Speaker 1: a safety blanket. Do I think they're going to still
- 4:56Speaker 1: move the ball around the yard and throw the ball
- 4:58Speaker 1: to other receivers, no question about it. Mitchell, it's going
- 5:01Speaker 1: to be up to Drake May. How is he going
- 5:04Speaker 1: to encore that all-pro season that he had last year?
- 5:08Speaker 1: Is that it? Is that the peak for Drake May?
- 5:11Speaker 1: Or can he continue to build on that and show
- 5:13Speaker 1: consistency and show that he is one of the elite
- 5:15Speaker 1: quarterbacks in this league? And it wasn't a fluke. It
- 5:19Speaker 1: wasn't a fluke season. It wasn't something that he was
- 5:22Speaker 1: playing great because he had this, this easy schedule or
- 5:25Speaker 1: he had this cupcake schedule because he faced some really,
- 5:28Speaker 1: really daunting defenses through on his journey to the Superbowl.
- 5:32Speaker 1: And anybody can argue that those are some of the
- 5:34Speaker 1: best defenses in the national football league. And arguably some
- 5:38Speaker 1: of the best defenses. I mean, you talk about Will
- 5:41Speaker 1: Anderson and that crew and what they were doing. You
- 5:43Speaker 1: talk about the Denver Broncos and that crew and what
- 5:45Speaker 1: they were doing. I mean, these were great pass rushing defenses,
- 5:48Speaker 1: great total defense defenses, some of the best, points per
- 5:53Speaker 1: game defenses in the National Football League, and they won them.
- 5:55Speaker 1: Were they pretty? Were they beautiful games that you're going
- 5:58Speaker 1: to put on the wall in the Louvre? No, they weren't.
- 6:00Speaker 1: But a win is a win. And he was able
- 6:03Speaker 1: to get his team to the promised land. Can he
- 6:06Speaker 1: do it again? And if he can, then you have
- 6:08Speaker 1: to start talking about him in that top five conversation.
- 6:10Speaker 1: You have to start putting his name in that conversation consistently.
- 6:13Speaker 1: And you've got to start removing some guys who've never
- 6:15Speaker 1: made it to the show, regardless of circumstance. You have
- 6:18Speaker 1: to stop calling guys top five if they cannot get
- 6:21Speaker 1: their team to the show. And we can make excuses,
- 6:24Speaker 1: excuses galore for all these guys and all these teams.
- 6:26Speaker 1: But at the end of the day, people respect winning
- 6:29Speaker 1: and winning matters. And if it doesn't, what's the point
- 6:31Speaker 1: of playing?
- 6:32Speaker 2: A lot of credit has got to be given to
- 6:34Speaker 2: Drake May. The level of composure that he showed in
- 6:36Speaker 2: that run. anchoring that team. Really, you've got to believe
- 6:41Speaker 2: he's going to grow going into year three. And with
- 6:44Speaker 2: these added weapons on the outside, A.J. Brown and Romeo Dobbs,
- 6:49Speaker 2: I expect the New England Patriots to be better. I
- 6:51Speaker 2: don't think their record is going to be better based
- 6:53Speaker 2: on the schedule, but I think they're going to be
- 6:55Speaker 2: a more formidable opponent come playoff time. And ultimately, their
- 7:00Speaker 2: eyes have got to be on that Super Bowl. Let's
- 7:02Speaker 2: talk about some of these other teams in this division.
- 7:05Speaker 2: The lowly New York Jets are And the Miami Dolphins,
- 7:08Speaker 2: who I'm surprised are even fielding a team right now,
- 7:12Speaker 2: with all the dead money cap hits they were facing
- 7:14Speaker 2: with Tunga-Vailoa getting released this offseason. Richard, what are your
- 7:19Speaker 2: expectations of both these teams heading into the season?
- 7:22Speaker 1: My expectations for these teams are loathe to know. I
- 7:26Speaker 1: think Aaron Glenn probably feels like, hey, this team is
- 7:28Speaker 1: going to go out and surprise some people. I think
- 7:31Speaker 1: sometimes the absence of expectations, the absence of expectations the
- 7:36Speaker 1: burden of people thinking you're going to be something. Sometimes
- 7:39Speaker 1: that underdog mentality can motivate a team and allow them
- 7:42Speaker 1: to sneak up on some people and steal some wins
- 7:45Speaker 1: against some teams they wouldn't be expected to beat. So
- 7:47Speaker 1: if I'm the Patriots or the Buffalo Bills, I'm watching
- 7:50Speaker 1: my back. But like you said, in Miami, there's just
- 7:53Speaker 1: so much dead cap for Jeff Halfley to deal with.
- 7:57Speaker 1: And I'm a Coach Halfley fan, so I'm going to
- 7:59Speaker 1: be rooting for the Miami Dolphins. And my guy Deshaun
- 8:01Speaker 1: Shedd is there. The cupboard is bare. This is almost
- 8:06Speaker 1: like a lost year for them because of all the
- 8:11Speaker 1: dead money. I think they're expecting this year to not
- 8:13Speaker 1: be a great year for them. They didn't pick up
- 8:16Speaker 1: a ton of guys. You get rid of a $ 50
- 8:18Speaker 1: million quarterback. You get rid of a $ 30 million receiver.
- 8:21Speaker 1: You trade away another $ 30 million receiver. Probably your top
- 8:26Speaker 1: three most impactful players offensively you get rid of. Now
- 8:31Speaker 1: you kept Devon H. Chan, and he's going to continue
- 8:37Speaker 1: to be productive and a great running back in this league.
- 8:39Speaker 1: But outside of that, you're depending on a bunch of young,
- 8:43Speaker 1: unproven guys to go out there on Sundays. And I
- 8:46Speaker 1: think that's the approach that Jeff Halfley has to have is, hey,
- 8:50Speaker 1: we're going to go out here and do our best, compete.
- 8:52Speaker 1: We're going to go out here and ruin people's Christmases.
- 8:54Speaker 1: We're going to go out here and ruin people's seasons.
- 8:57Speaker 1: I don't think you can expect the Miami Dolphins to
- 9:00Speaker 1: go out there and expect to compete for a Super
- 9:02Speaker 1: Bowl with that roster. If they do, I mean, this
- 9:04Speaker 1: will be one of the most historic seasons in the
- 9:07Speaker 1: National Football League's history, and we're talking about parity. Like,
- 9:10Speaker 1: anybody can get it done.
- 9:12Speaker 2: My eyes are firmly on Malik Willis and what he
- 9:15Speaker 2: shows as a starter in this league because, you know,
- 9:18Speaker 2: coming out of Liberty, a small school, there was a
- 9:21Speaker 2: lot of question marks about the level of competition he
- 9:24Speaker 2: played against. A lot of folks mocked him in the
- 9:26Speaker 2: top five of his draft class. He ultimately goes later
- 9:29Speaker 2: than that and goes to the Tennessee Titans and then
- 9:34Speaker 2: bounces to the Green Bay Packers. He was a proven
- 9:38Speaker 2: commodity for them these last two years. When Jordan Love
- 9:42Speaker 2: faced his injury issues, Malik Willis stepped in and was
- 9:45Speaker 2: arguably better than Jordan Love. So I've got a lot
- 9:49Speaker 2: of questions coming into this season. I don't think Miami's
- 9:52Speaker 2: going to be very good, but I think they got
- 9:53Speaker 2: themselves a good player in Malik Willis. We'll see how
- 9:57Speaker 2: it all plays out. Rich, let's talk about some of
- 10:00Speaker 2: these first four games for each team and what you
- 10:04Speaker 2: think records are going to be after the first four.
- 10:06Speaker 2: The New England Patriots are hosting, I'm sorry, are on
- 10:11Speaker 2: the road in Seattle against your Seahawks, then are hosting
- 10:14Speaker 2: the Pittsburgh Steelers at the Jags and at the Bills.
- 10:18Speaker 2: This is what I'm talking about when I say tough schedule.
- 10:22Speaker 2: You look at these opponents, and they could easily lose
- 10:25Speaker 2: a couple of these games. Richard, what do you think
- 10:28Speaker 2: their record ultimately will be after four games?
- 10:32Speaker 1: I think they go 2-2. That's four playoff teams right
- 10:34Speaker 1: there to start the season, and that's going to be tough.
- 10:38Speaker 1: I think it's going to be tough for them to
- 10:39Speaker 1: go to Seattle and find a win. I think they
- 10:41Speaker 1: can find a way to beat the Pittsburgh Steelers. the
- 10:44Speaker 1: Jacksonville Jaguars and Duval is going to be a tough out,
- 10:47Speaker 1: you know, especially the way, you know, that receiving core
- 10:49Speaker 1: and was playing at the end of the year. And,
- 10:52Speaker 1: and your guy, T law, T law is playing good
- 10:54Speaker 1: football at the end of the year. And if they're
- 10:56Speaker 1: playing that way and defensively, they can be as opportunistic
- 10:59Speaker 1: as they were last season, where they were amongst the
- 11:02Speaker 1: league leaders, if not the league leader in turnovers, they're
- 11:05Speaker 1: going to be a tough out. And then you got
- 11:07Speaker 1: the Buffalo bills and a division, a division foe and
- 11:10Speaker 1: a new stadium with new renewed energy. I think that's
- 11:13Speaker 1: going to be a tough place for them to get
- 11:15Speaker 1: a win. So, you know, I got them at 2-1-2.
- 11:18Speaker 1: I think they find one in Pittsburgh and maybe find
- 11:21Speaker 1: one between Buffalo and Jacksonville. But, you know, the division
- 11:25Speaker 1: games are always a toss-up, and I think they split
- 11:28Speaker 1: it with Buffalo regardless of which one they take.
- 11:32Speaker 2: The Buffalo Bills also with a challenging schedule out the
- 11:35Speaker 2: gates play at Houston against the vaunted Texans defense, Then
- 11:40Speaker 2: host the Lions. First game at Highmark. Host the Chargers.
- 11:44Speaker 1: TNF.
- 11:45Speaker 2: And the Patriots.
- 11:46Speaker 1: TNF.
- 11:47Speaker 2: First Thursday night football game on Amazon Prime. The Detroit
- 11:51Speaker 2: Lions versus the Bills. Richard will be there. Your thoughts
- 11:55Speaker 2: on these first four games for the Bills. Because yet
- 11:58Speaker 2: another team with a very tough schedule out the gates.
- 12:02Speaker 1: Yeah. I mean, I know that that Texan defense is
- 12:04Speaker 1: going to be roaring to go. They got potentially three all-pros.
- 12:09Speaker 1: On that defense, if you're talking about Derek Stingley, Will Anderson,
- 12:13Speaker 1: I think people consider Jalen Petrie a guy that can
- 12:16Speaker 1: potentially be an all-pro in this league. Kamari Lassiter on
- 12:19Speaker 1: the opposite side plays incredibly physical and way bigger than
- 12:22Speaker 1: his size. Just an incredibly talented team. And then you've
- 12:28Speaker 1: got to factor in Daniil Hunter and just a really,
- 12:32Speaker 1: really aggressive defense. It's C.J. Stroud. What is he going
- 12:35Speaker 1: to be this season? He struggled at times last season,
- 12:39Speaker 1: and then at times it seems like he pulled it
- 12:41Speaker 1: together and played good football. What is he going to be?
- 12:44Speaker 1: Is he going to be a C.J. Stroud who was
- 12:46Speaker 1: his rookie year sensation and really, really looked like he
- 12:49Speaker 1: was going to take over this league? Or is he
- 12:51Speaker 1: going to be the guy who struggled mightily against the
- 12:54Speaker 1: New England Patriots in a bit of a weather game?
- 12:57Speaker 1: If he can go back to being that guy that
- 12:59Speaker 1: everybody pegged to be taking over this league, then I
- 13:02Speaker 1: got them winning this game. But I think, you know,
- 13:04Speaker 1: I don't know. I think he's going to be a
- 13:06Speaker 1: little rusty to start the season. I think Buffalo finds
- 13:08Speaker 1: a way to get that game. Your Detroit Lions, again,
- 13:11Speaker 1: that's a tough game to go to Buffalo in their
- 13:13Speaker 1: new stadium and get that win. I think Buffalo finds
- 13:17Speaker 1: a way in that game. I think the Chargers flying
- 13:22Speaker 1: all the way out to Buffalo, New York, six hours.
- 13:26Speaker 1: That's going to be a tough one. And then, like
- 13:28Speaker 1: I said, they can split this one. So we'll call
- 13:30Speaker 1: it three and one.
- 13:32Speaker 2: And then the jets, uh, tough match out the gates,
- 13:35Speaker 2: actually a very favorable matchup for the jets, uh, at
- 13:39Speaker 2: the Titans. We'll see what the Titans can bring this year. Uh,
- 13:42Speaker 2: then hosting the Packers at the lions and then at
- 13:46Speaker 2: the bears, uh, tough schedule facing three NFC North teams
- 13:51Speaker 2: right out the gates. Do the jets get a win?
- 13:56Speaker 1: I mean, if they don't get it at, at the Titans,
- 13:58Speaker 1: you know, Robert's all a revenge game. Um, It sounds
- 14:01Speaker 1: easier than it probably is. I think he's going to
- 14:03Speaker 1: be very motivated all training camp. There was a lot
- 14:07Speaker 1: of love lost when Robert Sala left the New York
- 14:11Speaker 1: Jets and the way it transpired. So I think he's
- 14:14Speaker 1: going to put a lot into that game. So I
- 14:16Speaker 1: think the Titans may find a way to win that,
- 14:18Speaker 1: and the team may be rallying behind him. I don't
- 14:21Speaker 1: think they can find a way to beat any of
- 14:22Speaker 1: the NFC North teams, so I got them on four. Wow.
- 14:26Speaker 2: And then the Miami Dolphins open on the road in
- 14:29Speaker 2: Las Vegas, then travel to the San Francisco 49ers, return
- 14:34Speaker 2: home facing the Kansas City Chiefs, and then end up
- 14:37Speaker 2: back in Minnesota. Another tough schedule out the gates. Can
- 14:41Speaker 2: the Dolphins find a way to win a game?
- 14:44Speaker 1: Again, I think the motivation here is to get one.
- 14:48Speaker 1: And can you find a way to get one, uh,
- 14:52Speaker 1: in Las Vegas early on and just give your team
- 14:55Speaker 1: some hope to start the season? Can Malik Willis, you know,
- 14:58Speaker 1: sometimes you just, you know, you need a puncher's chance
- 15:00Speaker 1: and if they can get one, then I think going
- 15:03Speaker 1: through the season, you know, maybe that gets them five
- 15:06Speaker 1: or six wins this season. Um, but I think their
- 15:09Speaker 1: best chance is at the Raiders and that's not a
- 15:11Speaker 1: guarantee by any stretch of the imagination, but I think
- 15:13Speaker 1: that's their best chance at it. Um, I think the
- 15:18Speaker 1: 49ers are going to be raring to go, well-rested after
- 15:20Speaker 1: a long trip back from Australia and a lot of
- 15:23Speaker 1: time to prepare. I think the Chiefs are going to,
- 15:27Speaker 1: you know, Andy Reid's going to have his team ready
- 15:28Speaker 1: to go. But again, that defense is going to have
- 15:31Speaker 1: some questions to answer, but I think they have enough
- 15:33Speaker 1: to beat the Dolphins. I think they're one in three.
- 15:37Speaker 1: Football is back. And if you're getting ready for the season,
- 15:41Speaker 1: pull up to your local Lids. The exclusive 47 NFL
- 15:45Speaker 1: collection is available only in store at Lids. And this
- 15:49Speaker 1: gear is the gear you're going to need if you're
- 15:51Speaker 1: going all in all season.
- 15:54Speaker 2: No doubt about it. We're talking NFL graphic tees. The
- 15:57Speaker 2: iconic 47 hitch headwear silhouette. Richard, you like this, man?
- 16:03Speaker 2: I love this. The Detroit Lions 47 hitch headwear I
- 16:07Speaker 2: got on. and fan gear that looks good on game day,
- 16:11Speaker 2: Monday morning and every day in between.
- 16:14Speaker 1: And listen, I know a little something about being all in.
- 16:17Speaker 1: The Legion of Boom energy, it was not casual. We
- 16:20Speaker 1: didn't walk on the field hoping people noticed us. We
- 16:24Speaker 1: set the tone. We brought the energy. We made sure
- 16:27Speaker 1: everybody knew exactly who they were dealing with.
- 16:30Speaker 2: That's how you should rep your team, Richard.
- 16:32Speaker 1: Confidence.
- 16:33Speaker 2: No apologies. Whether you're hosting the crew, watching the family,
- 16:37Speaker 2: tailgating before the game, or sitting across from somebody wearing
- 16:41Speaker 2: the wrong colors. Get to your local lids and rep
- 16:45Speaker 2: your squad the right way.
- 16:47Speaker 1: Football isn't just a Sunday thing. It's a rivalry. It's tradition.
- 16:51Speaker 1: It's pride. It's who you are all week long. So
- 16:55Speaker 1: don't wait until kickoff to get ready. Pull up to
- 16:58Speaker 1: Lids and go all in, all season, only in store
- 17:02Speaker 1: at Lids.
- 17:04Speaker 2: Let's turn our focus to the AFC West. This division
- 17:08Speaker 2: is shaping up to be a gauntlet. For the first
- 17:11Speaker 2: time in I don't know how many years, the Kansas
- 17:15Speaker 2: City Chiefs are not alone. And the Denver Broncos proved
- 17:18Speaker 2: that last year, and they're bringing back Their same defense
- 17:22Speaker 2: and then some. They added Jalen Waddell this offseason. I mean,
- 17:26Speaker 2: obviously Patrick Mahomes and that knee injury is a question mark.
- 17:30Speaker 2: Kansas City Chiefs had Kenneth Walker. Then you got Mike
- 17:33Speaker 2: McDaniel heading into the LA Chargers. That defense is going
- 17:37Speaker 2: to be high, or offense is going to be high flying.
- 17:40Speaker 2: And then questions arise around the Clint Kubiak-led Las Vegas
- 17:44Speaker 2: Raiders who bring in the number one pick, Fernando Mendoza.
- 17:48Speaker 2: With a plethora of weapons as well, young weapons, Ashton Gentry,
- 17:52Speaker 2: they like what they see out of Mike Washington, the
- 17:54Speaker 2: running back out of Arkansas, obviously Brock Bowers. Richard, who
- 17:59Speaker 2: do you like most in the AFC West?
- 18:02Speaker 1: I think anytime you got a healthy Patrick Mahomes in
- 18:06Speaker 1: any division, he's going to be a tough out. And
- 18:08Speaker 1: I think that's who I'm going to go with. And
- 18:10Speaker 1: I think Vegas is going with Patrick Mahomes because it's
- 18:12Speaker 1: tough to bet against Patrick Mahomes if he's out there
- 18:14Speaker 1: and he's healthy. Regardless, I know there's some Some questions
- 18:17Speaker 1: around Rasheed Rice and, you know, things. Is he going
- 18:21Speaker 1: to end up on the exempt list? I don't know
- 18:23Speaker 1: if I've seen his name pop up on the exempt list,
- 18:26Speaker 1: the commissioner's exempt list. But I have seen Cooper's name
- 18:30Speaker 1: pop up on the exempt list and Josh Jacobs, you know.
- 18:34Speaker 1: And if the Broncos are going to be without Cooper
- 18:36Speaker 1: for an extended amount of time, that's going to factor in.
- 18:38Speaker 1: That changes the dynamic of that team. He's a pro-bowl,
- 18:41Speaker 1: all-pro rusher. for that team, one of the best rushers
- 18:45Speaker 1: in the National Football League and one of the best get-offs.
- 18:47Speaker 1: So if they're going to be without him, I feel
- 18:51Speaker 1: even better about the Kansas City Chiefs winning this division.
- 18:53Speaker 1: Can the Chargers do it? The Chargers' defense has played
- 18:55Speaker 1: really well. But again, the question mark is at the
- 18:58Speaker 1: quarterback position where you have a top-five talent in Justin
- 19:02Speaker 1: Herbert and not always a top-five result. And what impact
- 19:07Speaker 1: will Mike McDonough Mike McDaniel make in that run game.
- 19:10Speaker 1: He's going to make Omarion Hampton a much more valuable
- 19:13Speaker 1: piece in fantasy, I'm sure, but he's talked about using
- 19:16Speaker 1: three different running backs. So I'm looking forward to seeing
- 19:18Speaker 1: how he does. I'm looking forward to seeing the Raiders
- 19:22Speaker 1: and Kubiak and, you know, what they can do with
- 19:24Speaker 1: the inside-outside zone. They're obviously going to go with Kirk
- 19:27Speaker 1: Cousins early on, but when does Fernando Mendoza get his
- 19:30Speaker 1: shot to shine? And When is the changing of the guard?
- 19:35Speaker 1: I'm sure Kirk Cousins doesn't mind. Kirk Cousins has been
- 19:37Speaker 1: getting paid since Jesus was a baby, so it's going
- 19:40Speaker 1: to be a fun one.
- 19:41Speaker 2: There's no doubt about that. Let's go back to the
- 19:43Speaker 2: Denver Broncos, though. This was a team that was a
- 19:46Speaker 2: bit of a surprise last year. They always had that
- 19:48Speaker 2: great defense, but then Bo Nix came along and proved
- 19:51Speaker 2: that he was definitely worth being a starter in this
- 19:54Speaker 2: league and definitely worth that first round selection. They now
- 19:57Speaker 2: add Jalen Waddell to pair with Cortland Sutton. What do
- 20:01Speaker 2: you think about Denver's offense? We know you love their defense,
- 20:05Speaker 2: but do they have enough offensive weapons to get over
- 20:08Speaker 2: that hump?
- 20:11Speaker 1: They have the weapons, and we're going to talk about
- 20:14Speaker 1: their schedule in a second. But again, seeing the pieces
- 20:19Speaker 1: come together, and obviously Sean Payton is great, masterful at
- 20:23Speaker 1: drawing up plays and creating schemes and game planning defenses
- 20:27Speaker 1: and coming up with a consistent game plan throughout that
- 20:29Speaker 1: manipulates defenses. And he's going to put Bo Nix in
- 20:33Speaker 1: position to be successful as he did last year. Can
- 20:36Speaker 1: they stay healthy? Can they stay healthy? Can that defense
- 20:39Speaker 1: continue to thrive? They live in a lot of man-to-man coverage,
- 20:42Speaker 1: and that's a high risk, high reward, but they have
- 20:45Speaker 1: the best corner in the National Football League in Patrick Sertan,
- 20:48Speaker 1: so when you have that, you can definitely play a
- 20:51Speaker 1: little bit differently on defense, but again, it just depends.
- 20:55Speaker 1: If Cooper's part of this team, if he's on that
- 20:59Speaker 1: exhibit list for two weeks, cool. I think they probably
- 21:03Speaker 1: have a much better chance to win this AFC West,
- 21:06Speaker 1: but if he's on more than two weeks, if he's
- 21:08Speaker 1: on a quarter of the season, I'm not sure they
- 21:11Speaker 1: get through that tough portion of the season unscathed.
- 21:16Speaker 2: Now let's talk about the Kansas City Chiefs. Their big
- 21:18Speaker 2: free agent acquisition is Kenneth Walker, K-9, Michigan State, go green,
- 21:24Speaker 2: go white. Richard, this Kansas City Chiefs team has been
- 21:28Speaker 2: lacking a bell-count running back for a number of years now.
- 21:32Speaker 2: They're going to rely on K-9 to be just that guy.
- 21:36Speaker 2: how different of a team are the Kansas city chiefs
- 21:39Speaker 2: when they have a reliable run game behind Patrick Mahomes?
- 21:45Speaker 1: They're much different. And it's not just a reliable running game.
- 21:47Speaker 1: It's an explosive one. You know, Kenneth Walker is a
- 21:50Speaker 1: guy that can go to the house and get there
- 21:52Speaker 1: from anywhere on the field. And if you give him
- 21:54Speaker 1: a lane, I think sometimes you've watched Kansas city chiefs
- 21:57Speaker 1: and you know, they've had, um, running backs who, who
- 22:00Speaker 1: had some explosiveness, who had some grid dad, cream hunt,
- 22:03Speaker 1: who's the big back, the bruiser, uh, But they never
- 22:07Speaker 1: had a guy, I don't think Pacheco was a guy that, hey,
- 22:10Speaker 1: once he got a lane, it was over, you know,
- 22:11Speaker 1: and his foot raced to the end zone. I think
- 22:13Speaker 1: he's a guy who, you know, great story, fights for yards,
- 22:16Speaker 1: runs really hard. But K-9's a guy that if you
- 22:20Speaker 1: give him a lane, he can take over a game.
- 22:21Speaker 1: And I don't know if they've had a running back
- 22:24Speaker 1: like that in a while since probably Jamal Charles, who
- 22:27Speaker 1: could really go out there and, you know, put the
- 22:30Speaker 1: team on his back. And you look up and the
- 22:31Speaker 1: quarterback's just, hey, turn around, hand it off, you know.
- 22:34Speaker 1: complete a few passes, and go drink your water. And
- 22:37Speaker 1: K-9 has got a back, as he's shown in the
- 22:39Speaker 1: Super Bowl, that can be that.
- 22:41Speaker 2: And then the L.A. Chargers, another team that is definitely
- 22:44Speaker 2: in the conversation for this division. Justin Herbert has had
- 22:49Speaker 2: solid showings after solid showings. They now get an offensive
- 22:53Speaker 2: coordinator in Mike McDaniel that's going to throw the deep
- 22:56Speaker 2: ball more, play to his strengths more. How do you
- 23:00Speaker 2: foresee this offense looking with Mike McDaniel– at the reins.
- 23:06Speaker 1: It can be a very, very dangerous offense, if not
- 23:09Speaker 1: the best offense in the league. Mike McDaniel is a
- 23:13Speaker 1: mad scientist, especially in the run game. But if he
- 23:17Speaker 1: starts to make the linebackers and safeties play the run
- 23:20Speaker 1: game more, he's never had a quarterback with the kind
- 23:23Speaker 1: of arm talent that Justin Herbert has. There are very
- 23:27Speaker 1: few quarterbacks in the league with the kind of arm
- 23:29Speaker 1: talent that Justin Herbert has. And so I think it's
- 23:32Speaker 1: going to be a fun area for both of them.
- 23:35Speaker 1: But again, it still is up to Justin Herbert to
- 23:38Speaker 1: go out there and complete the passes and play up
- 23:41Speaker 1: to the level that he's capable of. And if he
- 23:43Speaker 1: does within this system, this can be a memorable, probably
- 23:48Speaker 1: at least with the Chargers, record-breaking season for them offensively
- 23:54Speaker 1: just because of how incredible he is of drawing and
- 23:58Speaker 1: creating openings and matchups offensively. within a scheme. I know
- 24:03Speaker 1: it didn't work out as a head coach, but it
- 24:04Speaker 1: does not change how great of an offensive coordinator he
- 24:07Speaker 1: can be. And I think people will appreciate Mike McDaniel
- 24:10Speaker 1: and who he is even more with Justin Herbert.
- 24:14Speaker 2: Let's dive into the first four games for these teams
- 24:17Speaker 2: as they open their schedules. You just tell me how
- 24:20Speaker 2: you think this is going to play out. The Broncos
- 24:23Speaker 2: are hosting the Chiefs, I'm sorry, are on the road
- 24:26Speaker 2: against the Chiefs, then host the Jags and the Rams,
- 24:29Speaker 2: and then head to the 49ers. Your thoughts on these
- 24:32Speaker 2: first four games?
- 24:35Speaker 1: Again, when does Cooper get off the exempt list? Because
- 24:38Speaker 1: with him on the exempt list and playing the Kansas
- 24:41Speaker 1: City Chiefs, can they sneak out of there with a
- 24:43Speaker 1: win in Arrowhead? Maybe, but probably not with Patrick Mahomes healthy. And,
- 24:50Speaker 1: you know, it's going to be a dogfight. It's going
- 24:51Speaker 1: to be a battle, a divisional game. Jacksonville coming in, again,
- 24:56Speaker 1: their receiving core is not one to be played with,
- 24:59Speaker 1: not one to be joked with. They're one of the
- 25:01Speaker 1: best receiving cores in the league. And if Trevor Lawrence
- 25:04Speaker 1: can play to the level that he did at times
- 25:07Speaker 1: last season, I think they are a tough out. So
- 25:12Speaker 1: that first stretch, I mean, it could be. 2-2, 1-3.
- 25:16Speaker 1: We'll go with 2-2.
- 25:18Speaker 2: It is a wild opening. Four games for the Broncos.
- 25:21Speaker 2: The Chargers play against the Cardinals at home. The Raiders
- 25:26Speaker 2: at the Bills, then at the Seahawks. A relatively easy
- 25:29Speaker 2: first two games for the Chargers, but then really facing
- 25:32Speaker 2: tough competition at the Buffalo Bills and at the Seattle Seahawks.
- 25:37Speaker 2: What's their record after four?
- 25:38Speaker 1: 2-2. 2-2, Mitchell. Going to Seattle and going to Buffalo
- 25:44Speaker 1: for their 2-2.
- 25:46Speaker 2: I see the same thing. Kansas City Chiefs at home
- 25:50Speaker 2: against the Broncos, at home against the Indianapolis Colts and
- 25:54Speaker 2: Indiana Jones, and then in Miami and then at Vegas. Richard,
- 26:00Speaker 2: is this a sweep for the Kansas City Chiefs?
- 26:04Speaker 1: Is Indiana Jones healthy? Is Jonathan Taylor healthy? Could be 4-0,
- 26:14Speaker 1: but I just don't know.
- 26:15Speaker 2: If Patrick is healthy. 4-0.
- 26:16Speaker 1: 4-0.
- 26:22Speaker 2: All right, and then the Raiders. Can Clint Kubiak make
- 26:27Speaker 2: some magic in Las Vegas? Opening against the Dolphins at
- 26:32Speaker 2: the Chargers, at the Saints, and then a home against
- 26:36Speaker 2: the Chiefs. Can they at least get one? Can they
- 26:40Speaker 2: at least get one out of four?
- 26:42Speaker 1: Give him one. Give him one and three, Mitchell. I
- 26:44Speaker 1: don't know which one. Give him one.
- 26:46Speaker 2: I'll give you the one. It's Miami Dolphins. As much
- 26:49Speaker 2: as I think Malik Willis is going to be a
- 26:51Speaker 2: good player for Miami, I just don't think they have
- 26:53Speaker 2: enough personnel around him. We'll see how long Kirk Cousins
- 26:57Speaker 2: lasts in Las Vegas. We'd love to see it happen.
- 27:00Speaker 2: Michigan State alumni, but when you get Fernando Mendoza there,
- 27:03Speaker 2: the number one pick, there's going to be a lot
- 27:06Speaker 2: of fans calling for him after a one and three start.
- 27:09Speaker 2: We shall see. Let's move now to the AFC North,
- 27:13Speaker 2: an always competitive division. The Ravens, the Steelers, the Browns,
- 27:18Speaker 2: the Bengals. A lot of questions coming here. John Harbaugh
- 27:22Speaker 2: leaves the Baltimore Ravens after this year. How are they
- 27:25Speaker 2: going to respond as a team? Aaron Rodgers is back
- 27:28Speaker 2: with Mike McCarthy, his former running mate. How different do
- 27:32Speaker 2: they look? Joe Burrell, can he stay healthy? And then
- 27:35Speaker 2: the looming question in Cleveland, Is Deshaun Watson the guy
- 27:39Speaker 2: or did they move to Shador? Richard, we'll just start
- 27:42Speaker 2: us off here. Who do you think is ultimately going
- 27:45Speaker 2: to win this always competitive AFC North?
- 27:48Speaker 1: Mitchell, I think the Ravens can win the AFC North. Now,
- 27:52Speaker 1: McCarthy being back with A-Rod is tempting. It's tempting because
- 27:56Speaker 1: I want to go there just to be the happy ending,
- 27:59Speaker 1: just to be the storybook, just because I love to
- 28:02Speaker 1: watch Aaron Rodgers play football and DK Metcalf. And that
- 28:06Speaker 1: offense is going to be hopefully a lot more exciting
- 28:09Speaker 1: and just, you know, seeing it, it's nostalgia.
- 28:13Speaker 2: Baltimore.
- 28:14Speaker 1: I got Baltimore winning the AFC North.
- 28:17Speaker 2: If I told you Joe Burrow could stay healthy throughout
- 28:19Speaker 2: the entire regular season, do you think the Cincinnati Bengals
- 28:25Speaker 2: would have any shot at this North? They have a
- 28:27Speaker 2: plethora of weapons offensively. Tee Higgins, obviously Jamar Chase, the
- 28:31Speaker 2: running back, Chase Brown. When healthy, Joe Burrow and the
- 28:36Speaker 2: Cincinnati Bengals can do damage. If he stays healthy, can
- 28:40Speaker 2: they win this AFC North? I know you're questioning your
- 28:43Speaker 2: own pick over there, Richard. So can I convince you
- 28:47Speaker 2: that the Cincinnati Bengals, with a fully healthy Joe Burrow
- 28:50Speaker 2: for 17 games, can win this division?
- 28:53Speaker 1: Mitchell, if Joe Burrow played safety or corner for the
- 28:58Speaker 1: Cincinnati Bengals, I'd be right there with you. But I watched.
- 29:02Speaker 1: I've been at those games. where Joe Burrow puts up
- 29:05Speaker 1: 40 points and the other team puts up 42. I've
- 29:09Speaker 1: been at the games where Joe Burrow puts up 35
- 29:13Speaker 1: points and the other team puts up 38. Mitchell, it's
- 29:16Speaker 1: not Joe Burrow's fault that it doesn't always work out, Mitchell.
- 29:20Speaker 1: They will be amongst the league leaders in points when
- 29:23Speaker 1: Joe Burrow is under center. But Mitchell, they could not
- 29:27Speaker 1: stop a nosebleed at times last season. And so if
- 29:33Speaker 1: that continues to be the case until they show me otherwise,
- 29:36Speaker 1: I don't got it. You could have... Joe Burrow or
- 29:41Speaker 1: Joe Montana back there. It would not matter if you
- 29:44Speaker 1: can't stop anybody. And I don't appreciate teams that don't
- 29:47Speaker 1: play defense.
- 29:50Speaker 2: Hey, I see your perspective and I totally understand it.
- 29:56Speaker 1: But I don't know.
- 29:57Speaker 2: I think something's different this year in Cincy, man. They
- 29:59Speaker 2: did address some needs defensively in free agency. That was
- 30:03Speaker 2: a point of emphasis for them. They brought in your boy,
- 30:06Speaker 2: Boye Mafi from the Seattle Seahawks to help with their
- 30:09Speaker 2: edge rush.
- 30:10Speaker 1: They brought in Sexy Dexy.
- 30:12Speaker 2: And Sexy Dexy, they spent their first round pick on
- 30:15Speaker 2: getting Sexy Dexter Lawrence in there as well. So they
- 30:19Speaker 2: certainly committed assets in improving that horrid defense there. So
- 30:23Speaker 2: with Joe Burrow healthy, I got to believe this team
- 30:26Speaker 2: is going to be flirting with that AFC North crown.
- 30:31Speaker 2: Then the question becomes, who are the Cleveland Browns? Is
- 30:35Speaker 2: Deshaun Watson the best quarterback on that roster? Or is
- 30:39Speaker 2: he just the highest paid quarterback on that roster so
- 30:42Speaker 2: you have to start him? What do you do if
- 30:45Speaker 2: you're in Cleveland with that quarterback situation?
- 30:49Speaker 1: Mitchell, you do exactly what they did because that's what
- 30:51Speaker 1: you have to do. I know fans are like, hey, Shador,
- 30:55Speaker 1: what about Shador? He's the future. He may very well be.
- 30:58Speaker 1: But if they believed that, they would have drafted him
- 31:00Speaker 1: somewhere before the fifth round. And I love Shador. I
- 31:02Speaker 1: think he can play in this league. But if they
- 31:04Speaker 1: thought he was the future, they would have drafted him
- 31:06Speaker 1: much earlier than the fifth round. They have a quarterback
- 31:09Speaker 1: on the roster that they're paying $ 50 million to. That's
- 31:12Speaker 1: the quarterback you will see until he is no longer
- 31:14Speaker 1: able to be out there. Now, could he play himself
- 31:17Speaker 1: back on the bench with a few bad throws? No
- 31:19Speaker 1: question about it. But one thing I know is not
- 31:21Speaker 1: going to help anybody, and that's the fans booing him
- 31:25Speaker 1: as he tries to get wins for the same team
- 31:28Speaker 1: that you're booing. Like, Browns fans, I understand. You guys
- 31:33Speaker 1: have had some tough years, and I cannot imagine because
- 31:37Speaker 1: I haven't had to live that life. I'm sorry. I
- 31:38Speaker 1: would never choose that for anybody. But you're working against
- 31:43Speaker 1: your best interest by booing this man in his own stadium.
- 31:47Speaker 1: I'm sorry. He's trying to win and make you cheer.
- 31:50Speaker 1: and make you happy and you're booing him working against
- 31:52Speaker 1: yourself so if you cheer when he throws the interception
- 31:55Speaker 1: you see how the insanity starts to develop you see
- 31:57Speaker 1: how that starts to look crazy.
- 32:00Speaker 2: There was people that question i hear you but there's
- 32:02Speaker 2: been a lot of question marks coming from cleveland as
- 32:04Speaker 2: soon as they got rid of baker mayfield so this
- 32:07Speaker 2: team's just been tumbling downhill when are they going to
- 32:10Speaker 2: land on their feet and start walking back up it
- 32:12Speaker 2: that's the big question The Sean Watson, if he can
- 32:16Speaker 2: stay healthy, they've got weapons. They invested their draft pick
- 32:20Speaker 2: in Casey Conception out of Texas A & M, who's
- 32:23Speaker 2: a great route runner, one of the best wide receivers
- 32:26Speaker 2: in this draft. You know, they invested in Boston out
- 32:31Speaker 2: of Washington in the draft as well. So we shall see.
- 32:35Speaker 2: Quinn Sean, Judkins, there is talent in Cleveland.
- 32:40Speaker 1: Yeah, but I still think they should have went with
- 32:42Speaker 1: Jim Swartz as the coach. I understand they went a
- 32:44Speaker 1: different direction and all that, but that kind of– I
- 32:49Speaker 1: don't know. It kind of soured me on the Browns
- 32:52Speaker 1: this season. I think Shador should play. I think he'd
- 32:55Speaker 1: be a great quarterback for them. I think he'd make
- 32:57Speaker 1: some plays that'd be more exciting for the fans. It'd
- 32:59Speaker 1: be more exciting for a lot of people. And, you know,
- 33:02Speaker 1: it has people rooting against Deshaun Watson, and that's the
- 33:06Speaker 1: part that you never want to see. You have your
- 33:07Speaker 1: own fans rooting against– your starting quarterback. And that's why
- 33:11Speaker 1: it's just so much vitriol and so much nastiness that
- 33:15Speaker 1: putting Shador out there would almost alleviate a lot of
- 33:17Speaker 1: the unnecessary headache to start the season. It's almost counterintuitive.
- 33:22Speaker 1: It's counter momentum. It's reverse momentum. You're walking into the
- 33:26Speaker 1: season with people hoping you start bad who are in
- 33:30Speaker 1: the stands buying seats.
- 33:32Speaker 2: Well, let's talk about if they're going to start bad.
- 33:34Speaker 2: Let's look at their first four games. They open at
- 33:37Speaker 2: the Jags. at the Bucs, at home against the Panthers
- 33:40Speaker 2: and Steelers, what's the outcome in these first four games?
- 33:48Speaker 1: One and three. One and three, Mitchell. One and three.
- 33:54Speaker 1: I'm giving them one.
- 33:56Speaker 2: So, one and three start. One and three start possible.
- 34:00Speaker 2: By week five, do we see Shador Sanders after a
- 34:03Speaker 2: one and three start?
- 34:05Speaker 1: It depends on how many interceptions were thrown in that
- 34:08Speaker 1: one and three start. Something tells me there may be
- 34:09Speaker 1: a couple, but who knows? Deshaun Watson may turn into
- 34:13Speaker 1: the guy that was drafted out of Kale Empson and
- 34:15Speaker 1: start balling. But if he does not, then you'll see
- 34:19Speaker 1: Shador by week five. Fair. Or maybe week four. Fair.
- 34:23Speaker 2: The Baltimore Ravens at the Colts.
- 34:26Speaker 1: Sorry.
- 34:27Speaker 2: The Baltimore Ravens at the Colts, home against the Saints,
- 34:31Speaker 2: at the Cowboys, home against the Titans. Somewhat favorable schedule
- 34:37Speaker 2: for a team that needs to, you know, find their
- 34:40Speaker 2: new identity under a new head coach.
- 34:43Speaker 1: Three and one. Three and one.
- 34:47Speaker 2: Okay.
- 34:47Speaker 1: I think Jesse Mentor is going to put together a
- 34:49Speaker 1: good defense, and they're going to be a tough out.
- 34:51Speaker 1: Three and one.
- 34:53Speaker 2: Mike McCarthy, Aaron Rodgers, and the Steelers open against the
- 34:57Speaker 2: Falcons at home, then head to New England, host the
- 35:00Speaker 2: Cincinnati Bengals, then travel to Cleveland. Interesting schedule to start
- 35:06Speaker 2: for them. 3-1, 4-0, 2-2.
- 35:09Speaker 1: 3-1 with a lot of hope. 3-1 with a lot
- 35:14Speaker 1: of hope.
- 35:15Speaker 2: Look out for Michael Pittman, by the way, in Pittsburgh.
- 35:18Speaker 2: I think Aaron Rodgers is going to find himself a
- 35:20Speaker 2: nice safety blanket and Michael Pittman paired with DK Metcalf.
- 35:26Speaker 2: Pittsburgh might be cooking with something in that wide receiver room.
- 35:29Speaker 2: And then Cincinnati.
- 35:30Speaker 1: Cincinnati.
- 35:31Speaker 2: Healthy Joe Burrow, Jamar Chase, T. Higgins, Chase Brown. At
- 35:37Speaker 2: home against the Bucs, at Houston, at the Steelers, at
- 35:41Speaker 2: home against the Jags. Joe Burrow, 4-0. It's tough, Mitchell.
- 35:48Speaker 1: Come on. Mitchell, I would love to go Joe Burrow, 4-0.
- 35:52Speaker 1: But the people that are blocking for him, I don't
- 35:55Speaker 1: know if they want Joe Burrow to be 4-0. And
- 35:57Speaker 1: so the Tampa Bay Bucs, Reuben Bain and company, Fita
- 36:01Speaker 1: Veya and company. Mitchell, if Joe Burrow's upright, I've got
- 36:06Speaker 1: them winning that game. But a shootout with Baker Mayfield
- 36:08Speaker 1: against a very aggressive, blitzing Todd Bowles defense. I don't know.
- 36:12Speaker 1: Houston Texans, Will Anderson and company. Daniil Hunter, hunters. Mitchell hunters.
- 36:17Speaker 1: Good luck, Joe Burrow, standing upright. Pittsburgh Steelers, for all
- 36:20Speaker 1: their faults, TJ Watt. I apologize, TJ. And those boys
- 36:27Speaker 1: can get after the quarterback, and I expect them to
- 36:29Speaker 1: continue to do that. Jacksonville Jaguars, opportunistic defense, 1-3.
- 36:34Speaker 2: Wow, 1-3. I don't think Cincy fans are going to
- 36:37Speaker 2: like to hear that. I got them at least 2-2.
- 36:39Speaker 2: I feel very good about the Cincinnati Bengals team this year,
- 36:43Speaker 2: but I did that as well last year and the
- 36:46Speaker 2: year before that, so we'll see what happens.
- 36:48Speaker 1: My top three rules for the football season, know your team,
- 36:52Speaker 1: know the schedule, and don't overpay to watch the games.
- 36:56Speaker 2: That's why Sling makes sense this NFL season. You can
- 37:00Speaker 2: get the action you actually want, including Monday night football,
- 37:04Speaker 2: NFL Network, and Red Zone with flexible package options starting
- 37:09Speaker 2: at $ 19. 99 a month.
- 37:11Speaker 1: Watch football on your terms this season.
- 37:14Speaker 2: Head to sling.com and find the package or pass subscription
- 37:18Speaker 2: that works for you. The AFC South, this is a
- 37:22Speaker 2: division we're talking a little bit more of just because
- 37:25Speaker 2: the Houston Texans have such a dominant defense, especially that
- 37:29Speaker 2: defensive line and their secondary. I mean, my goodness, athletes
- 37:34Speaker 2: all over the field, difference makers all over that defense.
- 37:37Speaker 2: The question's really going to come down to the quarterback
- 37:40Speaker 2: play of C.J.
- 37:41Speaker 1: Stroud.
- 37:42Speaker 2: And then the Jaguars, I know you were so down
- 37:44Speaker 2: on them last year, but they shocked a lot of folks.
- 37:47Speaker 2: Trevor Lawrence was getting mobile, was getting active. out of
- 37:51Speaker 2: that quarterback position. They started running him a ton in
- 37:53Speaker 2: the red zone, and we saw this offense just explode
- 37:57Speaker 2: towards the second half of the season. And then Indiana
- 38:00Speaker 2: Jones and the Colts surprised a lot of folks as
- 38:03Speaker 2: well until he got hurt. And then we go back
- 38:06Speaker 2: to the Tennessee Titans. Robert Sala finds a new home
- 38:10Speaker 2: in Tennessee. What can he bring to the Titans? So
- 38:14Speaker 2: many questions in this AFC South. Who's your favorite?
- 38:17Speaker 1: Yeah, Mitchell, I think Trevor Lawrence with, you know, Jacoby Myers,
- 38:21Speaker 1: they paid him as soon as they got him because
- 38:23Speaker 1: he was making such an impact. Parker Washington looked unstoppable
- 38:26Speaker 1: near the end of the season. And then Brian Thomas,
- 38:29Speaker 1: I'm hearing great things out of training camp that he's
- 38:31Speaker 1: looking like his old self. He's regained his confidence, regained
- 38:34Speaker 1: his form. And whatever you sprinkle Travis Hunter in there
- 38:37Speaker 1: on is going to be great. But I think them
- 38:40Speaker 1: focusing defensively on Travis Hunter is going to make him
- 38:44Speaker 1: much more of an impactful player for this team. I
- 38:46Speaker 1: don't know who said that should have happened from the beginning.
- 38:49Speaker 1: I don't know what crazy guy said. He should probably
- 38:51Speaker 1: be just be sprinkled in at receiver and just play
- 38:53Speaker 1: corner full time. But that guy probably knows some ball
- 38:56Speaker 1: and that's what they're doing with Travis Hunter. And you're
- 38:58Speaker 1: probably about to watch Travis Hunter have a potential all
- 39:01Speaker 1: pro corner year and still make some impactful plays on
- 39:04Speaker 1: offense because you don't have to play 60 plays to
- 39:06Speaker 1: be impactful on offense, but you damn sure better be
- 39:09Speaker 1: out there on defense. If you expect to make an
- 39:11Speaker 1: impact because any play can be the given play. And
- 39:14Speaker 1: I like how that's going to go. Um, I think
- 39:17Speaker 1: their defense is going to continue to be really good
- 39:19Speaker 1: and opportunistic. I think they got a really good front.
- 39:23Speaker 1: They got great linebacker play. Alua Khan has continued to
- 39:29Speaker 1: grow and thrive. in this defense. And I think, you know,
- 39:33Speaker 1: if they can play like they did last year, you know,
- 39:35Speaker 1: which is, you know, anytime you're getting that many turnovers,
- 39:38Speaker 1: you wonder, is it sustainable? But it was last year.
- 39:41Speaker 1: And if they continue to play at that level, they're
- 39:43Speaker 1: going to be a tough out.
- 39:43Speaker 2: Then the other team is Houston Texans. Obviously, you love
- 39:47Speaker 2: their defense. Will Anderson. is an exceptional defensive end. And
- 39:53Speaker 2: then you already talked about their defensive backroom. Let's talk
- 39:58Speaker 2: a little bit about their offense. C.J. Stroud came out
- 40:02Speaker 2: like he was going to set the NFL on fire
- 40:05Speaker 2: as a rookie and then ultimately slumped his second year.
- 40:09Speaker 2: This past year, we didn't see a ton. He left
- 40:13Speaker 2: a lot to be desired. Who is C.J. Stroud? I mean,
- 40:17Speaker 2: is this guy... a capable difference maker in this league.
- 40:22Speaker 2: What is your perception of C.J. Stroud as a quarterback?
- 40:26Speaker 1: Well, you know, his ceiling is what he was his
- 40:28Speaker 1: rookie year, and his ceiling is one of the best
- 40:30Speaker 1: quarterbacks in the National Football League. But you also see
- 40:32Speaker 1: in the basement, and you saw the basement in the
- 40:36Speaker 1: playoffs against the New England Patriots, you know, in the
- 40:40Speaker 1: biggest light, the biggest stage for everybody to watch. And so,
- 40:43Speaker 1: can you recover from that? Some guys, you know, have
- 40:45Speaker 1: a game like this and you're never the same. You know,
- 40:48Speaker 1: you can never get it back. Sometimes social media and
- 40:50Speaker 1: fans sending mean messages and just showing vitriol towards you
- 40:55Speaker 1: changes you and changes the way you approach the game
- 40:57Speaker 1: and changes the way you're afraid to make a mistake.
- 40:59Speaker 1: You're afraid to be criticized. Now, if he can go
- 41:01Speaker 1: out there confidently and just deliver balls with the velocity
- 41:05Speaker 1: and the confidence that he did his first year and
- 41:09Speaker 1: they have a great season and you got guys like,
- 41:13Speaker 1: Jalen Noel and and uh Nico Collins if Nico Collins
- 41:17Speaker 1: can can get back to the form he was a
- 41:19Speaker 1: couple years ago where he was a top five receiver
- 41:22Speaker 1: before he got hurt um I think they got a
- 41:25Speaker 1: chance and and Xavier Xavier Hutchinson is another big time
- 41:29Speaker 1: playmaker for for them and uh your guy David Montgomery
- 41:32Speaker 1: you know can he be the bell cow and when
- 41:34Speaker 1: they lost Joe Mixon that was kind of their identity
- 41:36Speaker 1: part of their identity was gone I think maybe that
- 41:38Speaker 1: had an effect on CJ Stroud and I think David Montgomery,
- 41:42Speaker 1: and just getting that run game back, just getting a
- 41:44Speaker 1: consistent run game back is going to be a factor,
- 41:47Speaker 1: and you're going to be able to lean on that defense. Again,
- 41:49Speaker 1: those two of the best pass rushers in the league,
- 41:51Speaker 1: and Daniil Hunter and Will Anderson, I mean, they're all
- 41:56Speaker 1: NFL walking off the bus team. You see those guys
- 41:59Speaker 1: walk off the bus, you know you're in for a
- 42:00Speaker 1: long day. I mean, this may be the best secondary
- 42:02Speaker 1: in the league. Jalen Petrie at the nickel could be
- 42:05Speaker 1: just as good as anybody. Kamari Lassiter, Reed Blankenship, Derek
- 42:08Speaker 1: Stingley Jr., I mean... you could potentially have two, three
- 42:13Speaker 1: pro bowlers in that secondary if they do it right. So, yeah,
- 42:17Speaker 1: any team that plays them is going to have their
- 42:18Speaker 1: hands absolutely full. And can C.J. Stroud just do what
- 42:23Speaker 1: he did? Do enough. He doesn't have to be all world,
- 42:26Speaker 1: but just don't lose the game for this team, and
- 42:28Speaker 1: they're going to be formidable.
- 42:29Speaker 2: Let's talk about your friend Robert Sala and the Titans.
- 42:33Speaker 2: What would you think would be a good first season
- 42:35Speaker 2: for him in Tennessee?
- 42:37Speaker 1: I think a good first season for him in Tennessee is,
- 42:40Speaker 1: is not, not picking top five. Uh, you know, I
- 42:45Speaker 1: don't think you can ask for much more than that.
- 42:48Speaker 1: They got a lot to build, you know, the, the, the,
- 42:50Speaker 1: there's a lot of room to make up, um, in
- 42:53Speaker 1: a division that has become more competitive with the Houston
- 42:56Speaker 1: Texans and, uh, in the Jacksonville Jaguars being, being much
- 42:59Speaker 1: better with the Indianapolis Colts, having Indiana Jones and start
- 43:02Speaker 1: to starting to get the best out of him with
- 43:04Speaker 1: Jonathan Taylor starting to run like he's run before. Um,
- 43:08Speaker 1: And that defense in Indianapolis should be formidable with Sauce
- 43:11Speaker 1: Gardner and that secondary. But we'll see. We'll see what
- 43:15Speaker 1: they can be. But I think just not picking in
- 43:18Speaker 1: the top five. If they're not drafted in the top five,
- 43:20Speaker 1: I'd consider that a successful season in Nashville.
- 43:23Speaker 2: Let's walk through the first four games. The Texans play
- 43:26Speaker 2: the Bills at home, the Bengals at home, travel to Indy,
- 43:29Speaker 2: and then play the Cowboys at home. Tough schedule out
- 43:32Speaker 2: of the gates for the Texans. Your thoughts on that
- 43:35Speaker 2: record after four?
- 43:42Speaker 1: I'm still thinking about who's winning this division.
- 43:45Speaker 2: I was just going to say, I feel like you
- 43:47Speaker 2: just talked yourself into the Texans. Like just hearing you talk.
- 43:50Speaker 1: Yeah, that's exactly what I did.
- 43:52Speaker 2: You talked about that team and the way their defense
- 43:54Speaker 2: just all unfolded. I was about to ask you, I
- 43:58Speaker 2: think you're going to change your pick. Is it still
- 44:02Speaker 2: the Jags? A lot rides on C.J.
- 44:05Speaker 1: Stroud, Richard.
- 44:06Speaker 2: A lot.
- 44:07Speaker 1: I don't know. But a lot doesn't ride on C.J. Stroud.
- 44:10Speaker 1: That's why I want to pick it. I've seen great
- 44:13Speaker 1: defenses carry quarterbacks very far, Mitchell. And I just feel
- 44:18Speaker 1: like you don't need to be a world beater. Can
- 44:21Speaker 1: he not throw the game away and they're going to
- 44:24Speaker 1: be fine? And I think he can play that way.
- 44:26Speaker 1: He can play good run game, get the ball to
- 44:29Speaker 1: Nico Collins, trust your tight ends. Potentially, if he wants
- 44:33Speaker 1: to play all pro football and get back to the C.J.
- 44:35Speaker 1: Stroud of old, you know what? I love great defense.
- 44:40Speaker 1: Give me Houston.
- 44:41Speaker 2: You know who's going to absolutely love that take?
- 44:44Speaker 1: Duvall.
- 44:46Speaker 2: Duvall, your friends in Jacksonville. I'm sure this is Richard.
- 44:52Speaker 2: You know how to make them love you down in Jacksonville, man.
- 44:55Speaker 2: Holy cow. Hey, for the record, Jacksonville fans, I've been
- 44:59Speaker 2: a fan of Trevor Lawrence last season. I think that
- 45:02Speaker 2: this team has got what it takes to win this division.
- 45:05Speaker 2: I'm rolling with the Jags. I get it. I get
- 45:07Speaker 2: your point about the Texans. I get this defense. I'm
- 45:11Speaker 2: rolling with the Jags. That being said, how do you
- 45:14Speaker 2: think the Houston Texans start after their first four games?
- 45:18Speaker 2: Bills at home, Bengals at home, Colts on the road,
- 45:21Speaker 2: Cowboys at home.
- 45:25Speaker 1: Three and one. Three and one, Metro. I think they
- 45:27Speaker 1: go three and one. Who's the one? That D-line. Who's
- 45:32Speaker 1: the one? Who's the one? Every man and woman in
- 45:36Speaker 1: America and all over the world has been asking that
- 45:39Speaker 1: question for many years. Mitchell, who's the one? Guess we're
- 45:43Speaker 1: going to see.
- 45:44Speaker 2: The Jags hosting the Browns at the Broncos at home
- 45:48Speaker 2: against the Pats and then at the Bengals.
- 45:52Speaker 1: Thoughts? Two and two. Two and two. I'm sorry, Drew Duvall.
- 46:00Speaker 1: I believe Broncos... Very formidable outfit. If Cooper's not there,
- 46:06Speaker 1: Jonathan Cooper's not there, 3-1. 2-2, though. Okay. All right.
- 46:11Speaker 2: The Colts, Indiana Jones. How impactful can he be coming
- 46:16Speaker 2: off the major injury? Open up against the Ravens at home.
- 46:21Speaker 2: Travel to Arrowhead against the Chiefs. Then the Texans and
- 46:25Speaker 2: Commanders both at home. Tough schedule to open for the Colts.
- 46:29Speaker 2: How do they fare?
- 46:36Speaker 1: Two and two. Two and two. The hard way. Wow.
- 46:42Speaker 2: Okay. I like one and three personally, but two and two.
- 46:46Speaker 2: God bless you, Rich. We'll see how that fares. And
- 46:48Speaker 2: then the Titans.
- 46:49Speaker 1: We got to start keeping track of Mitchell's picks, too.
- 46:51Speaker 1: We have to because I don't want to.
- 46:53Speaker 2: I feel like we'll save it down the road, but
- 46:59Speaker 2: I got some hot takes for you here, Richard. One
- 47:02Speaker 2: and three for the Colts. Tennessee Titans. Robert Sala season.
- 47:07Speaker 2: What can they do at home against the Jets, at
- 47:10Speaker 2: home against the Eagles, travel to New York to face
- 47:14Speaker 2: the Giants, and then finally against the Ravens away? Robert Sala,
- 47:20Speaker 2: can you give them two? Can you give them two?
- 47:25Speaker 1: I'm going to give them two. Doing two.
- 47:30Speaker 2: Okay, that's the Robert Sala special. Watch out for Jackson
- 47:38Speaker 2: Dart this year and the Giants, Richard. I think two
- 47:40Speaker 2: and two might be a little generous. I'm going one
- 47:42Speaker 2: and three with the Titans.
- 47:44Speaker 1: Mitchell, Robert Sala is on a revenge tour against anything
- 47:48Speaker 1: New York.
- 47:49Speaker 2: I got him in New York. I respect it, man.
- 47:51Speaker 2: He's a Michigan man from Dearborn. I want him to
- 47:55Speaker 2: be successful. I love the way he coaches the energy
- 47:58Speaker 2: he brings to any team he coaches, but Tennessee, we
- 48:03Speaker 2: shall see. So division winners.
- 48:06Speaker 1: He's not a Royal Oak guy. Whatever. Not everybody can be.
- 48:09Speaker 2: Not everyone can be.
- 48:12Speaker 1: My top three rules for the football season. Know your team,
- 48:15Speaker 1: know the schedule, and don't overpay to watch the games.
- 48:19Speaker 2: Or you just want to tap in for a few
- 48:21Speaker 2: days and grab a one to three to seven day
- 48:24Speaker 2: pass subscription starting at just $ 4. 99. No need to pay
- 48:29Speaker 2: for more than you need.
- 48:30Speaker 1: Just pull up for the games you care about, get
- 48:33Speaker 1: your football fix, and keep it moving.
- 48:36Speaker 2: Head to sling.com and find the package or pass subscription
- 48:40Speaker 2: that works for you. All right, to recap this, you've
- 48:44Speaker 2: got the division winners as follows, the Bills, the Chiefs,
- 48:48Speaker 2: the Ravens, and the Texans. Who fills out the wild
- 48:52Speaker 2: card in the AFC when it comes to playoff time?
- 48:57Speaker 1: Well, Mitchell... Hmm. It's going to be some unhappy fan bases. Obviously,
- 49:06Speaker 1: Denver made the AFC Championship last year. I have to
- 49:08Speaker 1: have them there. They had even a chance without Bo
- 49:11Speaker 1: Nix to make it to the Super Bowl. That would
- 49:13Speaker 1: have been strange, but they had a chance. So we'll
- 49:15Speaker 1: go Broncos. The Super Bowl runner-ups aren't just going to disappear.
- 49:20Speaker 1: quietly into the night. I don't think Mike Grable is
- 49:22Speaker 1: going to allow that. They'll be six. Seven. Sneak it
- 49:27Speaker 1: into the playoffs. Justin Herbert, he played, you know, they
- 49:33Speaker 1: got a great defense, but Duvall and Trevor Lawrence and
- 49:37Speaker 1: that receiving core is going to be too much to overcome,
- 49:41Speaker 1: I think. Jacksonville for the sevens.
- 49:47Speaker 2: I'm just going to go on record right now. I
- 49:50Speaker 2: feel like now's the time. I think the Bengals are
- 49:52Speaker 2: going to shock some people this year. I think they're
- 49:54Speaker 2: going to be finishing a top three seed come playoff time.
- 49:58Speaker 2: I think they win their division. That's one shock. I
- 50:02Speaker 2: also think the Chargers, Richard, Make the wild card. I
- 50:07Speaker 2: think they're going to put some pressure on that division
- 50:09Speaker 2: as well. Mike McDaniel, Justin Herbert being able to sling
- 50:14Speaker 2: the rock all over the yard. You and I differ
- 50:17Speaker 2: when it comes to those teams. I got the Chargers
- 50:20Speaker 2: and the Bengals.
- 50:22Speaker 1: So who do you have out?
- 50:25Speaker 2: The Ravens. I hate to do it to the Jags.
- 50:35Speaker 2: I got to do it to the Jags. I love you, Duvall,
- 50:37Speaker 2: but I.
- 50:38Speaker 1: He doesn't love you like that. Oh, shit.
- 50:46Speaker 2: I'm sorry, Jags fans.
- 50:47Speaker 1: You see how hard it is, Mitchell? Yeah. It's not easy.
- 50:52Speaker 1: Welcome to the hot seat.
- 50:55Speaker 2: Guys, this recaps our AFC preview. Please, if you guys
- 51:00Speaker 2: haven't checked it out already, go take a look at
- 51:02Speaker 2: our NFC preview that just dropped earlier this week. Richard's
- 51:05Speaker 2: got a bunch of predictions there as well. He talks
- 51:07Speaker 2: good about my Honolulu Blue Boys and Detroit, the Detroit Lions.
- 51:11Speaker 2: Make sure to tune in with us every week as
- 51:14Speaker 2: Richard and I drop content routinely throughout this season. We're
- 51:17Speaker 2: looking forward to it. Richard, my man, I will let
- 51:20Speaker 2: you sign us off.
- 51:21Speaker 1: As always, we appreciate you joining us. You could be
- 51:23Speaker 1: anywhere in the world, but you're here with us, and
- 51:25Speaker 1: we surely do appreciate it. All of our faithful, consistent listeners,
- 51:30Speaker 1: and even the people who just got here yesterday or today,
- 51:33Speaker 1: we love you. Just the same and welcome. We'll see
- 51:36Speaker 1: you next time.
