- 0:32Hello. As we've reached the quarter
- 0:37century mark, I'm joined firstly by Owen Smith and hopefully
- 0:42later on in not too distant future, Dean will be dialing in
- 0:46as well. God knows what he's up to, but
- 0:49he couldn't make the kick off. So welcome, Owen, how are you?
- 0:53I'm good Ryan, legs bit sore after a big week but happy to be
- 0:57chatting to you. Yeah, I just, I just clicked a
- 1:01senior story before wants to ask you about these hard boiled
- 1:04eggs. What, 6 grams of protein in each
- 1:08egg? Well.
- 1:08What are they doing in the gravel though?
- 1:10Did you eat them after that? But should you peel the shell
- 1:12off? Oh yeah, true.
- 1:15Yeah, I've actually got a few people ask me about that, like,
- 1:17what the hell? But yeah, you peel the shell off
- 1:19and then just you just eat. Quick protein.
- 1:23Yeah, fair enough. So did you cook them up this
- 1:24morning? Yeah, boiled them this morning.
- 1:26I actually got that off Elliot Giles, the UK runner.
- 1:29He, no, I remember he was doing an interview and he had like a
- 1:32boiled egg in his hand and I was like, what the hell?
- 1:34So yeah, what's my thing now? How long do you boil them for?
- 1:388 minutes is just nice because you don't want it too runny, but
- 1:43you also want it like like a bit solid.
- 1:46So yeah, that's my go to. Yeah, OK.
- 1:49I don't know about the boiled egg game.
- 1:51I know about the poached egg game.
- 1:52So it's similar like you want the yolk in the middle.
- 1:55Yeah, just poached eggs. They're they're a lot harder to
- 1:58do. Boiled egg you later just boil
- 2:00the water. Chucked eggs in 8 minutes where
- 2:02you go. OK, enough egg chat.
- 2:06We're trying. We're trying to stop pad until
- 2:07Dean gets on, but we can't. We can't be going down the Egg
- 2:10Rd. too much. No, he's parenting duties.
- 2:16Just wanted to say the Easy Double Easy Double Strava group
- 2:20has grown some legs this week since we gave a shout out on the
- 2:23episode last week. So we've got 150 members in
- 2:26there now. Hopefully that will continue to
- 2:28grow. Oh, here he is, here he is.
- 2:32Speak of the devil. How you guys doing?
- 2:34We were just chatting about you. Ears were burner.
- 2:40Well, literally just introduced Owen and we chatted about his
- 2:43his boiled egg game after his long run this morning.
- 2:47Have you seen this? Have you seen it on his story I?
- 2:51Haven't. So he's got his, he's got his
- 2:55shoes on the floor, he's got his like nutrition on the floor, his
- 2:58Becks, gels and tablets and then two boiled eggs.
- 3:05Antonia, get on it. He's hitting all the macros.
- 3:08Yeah. Easy double egg protein.
- 3:12Hey, so Dean, here we are. Welcome to the show, Episode 25
- 3:18quarter Century Mark. Sort of flown I think.
- 3:21Yeah, no, which is more of a landmark you think, this week or
- 3:24next week? Because next week 20, week 26
- 3:27must be the half year. Yeah, I like the the symmetry of
- 3:3225 on its way to 100, but 26 probably in terms of time.
- 3:36Yeah, OK. We'll claim next week as well
- 3:38anyway. We've done well like keeping it.
- 3:40We've done well like keeping it together.
- 3:41Like we're seeing that, like we're all on, like the other
- 3:44side of the world. Yeah, I can't believe we're
- 3:46still here. It's.
- 3:47Pretty good. We have managed the plus seven
- 3:50well, to be fair. Or -7.
- 3:55We're almost at the point of not needing to reference it, but we
- 3:58haven't quite got there yet. Nearly.
- 4:02I was just saying, Dean, about the Strava group.
- 4:04It's grown some legs this week. We've got 150 members in there
- 4:08as of right now and Shift there's, there's a few mileage
- 4:13monsters in there, like if you want to be in the top 10 on this
- 4:16week's leaderboard for mileage, you've got to be running 140 KS.
- 4:20Yeah, that's that's good. That's what that's what you
- 4:23want. That's what so so the king of
- 4:26Strava must have heard his He has been in last week because
- 4:29he's got involved now. Jake.
- 4:32He's on 260K, sitting pretty at the top.
- 4:35I nearly commented on his activities today.
- 4:38Did you say because I think he's, I think it was a triple
- 4:42run day. In his second run, he tried to
- 4:44push the run and I think he commented about how people on
- 4:49their recovery days sort of effectively train too hard and
- 4:52run too hard on the easy runs. And I nearly commented do they
- 4:55train harder, not smarter? But I I tried to not be a troll,
- 5:00but I saved it for here. So there you go.
- 5:05His his elevation gain as well. Like when you log into Strava on
- 5:09the laptop, you get so much more data.
- 5:11It's fucking it's cool. Like his elevation is two 2467,
- 5:17but the cool thing is he's not top of the elevation gain
- 5:20despite running 260 KS and seemingly a lot in the hills as
- 5:24well. There's a guy Michelle, Michelle
- 5:28Giuseppe, I think he does his runs in Italy as well.
- 5:32He's got 5496 meters of elevation gain across 118 KS of
- 5:38running. That is outrageous.
- 5:40He's literally climbing a mountain for every single run he
- 5:42does. Yeah, So my eyes are going to be
- 5:46fixed on that, see if he's doing it again, like week in, week
- 5:49out, or if he's just been running up a mountain this week.
- 5:53And there was a question in there during the week.
- 5:57Someone asked, they were asking about the topless running, you
- 6:01know, from last week's Double Trouble and keen to get your
- 6:05opinions on this. They were saying topless,
- 6:07running in the rain, yes or no. I think it depends if it's cold
- 6:13out, like if it's cold and rain and you're wearing no top,
- 6:17you're going to get sick. But if it's warm and it's just
- 6:21like a heavy shower, like sometimes your top gets super
- 6:24super heavy and it's just not nice to run in.
- 6:27So then you could ditch it. But like if it's freezing cold,
- 6:31like if it's cold enough to wear hat and gloves like you should
- 6:34be wearing AT shirt. Let's be real.
- 6:36Yeah, the cold. Cold overrides everything.
- 6:40That's why it was the double trouble.
- 6:41So I just don't understand why you would go, oh it's cold, I'll
- 6:45take my top off. I just don't get it.
- 6:50And then this week I've seen so many topless people running
- 6:53whilst it's been cold or dark or wet or anything.
- 6:57And I probably see them every week, but I wouldn't have
- 6:59noticed them previously because I've said this.
- 7:01Now I'm just seeing all these people running around topless
- 7:04and thinking that the trolling me.
- 7:06Was it AI generated the the what you created?
- 7:11Yeah, the prompt, the prompt must have been pretty detailed.
- 7:13It's good, isn't it? It's done well, yeah.
- 7:17At first the prompter it gave me gave me like a proper humanized
- 7:21like legit image and I was like shit, if the guy who I was
- 7:25talking about sees this it might like actually get offended.
- 7:28So I have to like alter it to make it more cartoon like and
- 7:33stuff. Do you fade an image of who you
- 7:36took? Sends it straight in from the
- 7:40camera roll. A bit more ad hoc stuff.
- 7:45We've got a big interview coming up next Friday.
- 7:48It's locked in. Shall I?
- 7:50Shall I reveal the candidate or shall we keep it close to our
- 7:53chest? Maybe just a few teasers like
- 7:56where's from how good is he or she or she reveal.
- 8:01Gender. Yeah.
- 8:05OK, so said candidate has at least one GB vest.
- 8:11Said candidate has. I don't know how much.
- 8:16What else to say without giving it away.
- 8:19I think the GB vest could do it. Go on.
- 8:23Oh no, every arsehole in the country in GB nearly has any GB
- 8:26vest. It's not too hard to get one.
- 8:29But what is his like best distance?
- 8:32Like is he marathon? Is he shorter?
- 8:35I'd say a few years ago maybe raised his profile massively
- 8:39from a certain marathon that he ran.
- 8:42Interesting, no, So we won't say the name, but one for the
- 8:47future. Yeah, very excited the head of
- 8:49this conversation as well. Big platform as well.
- 8:54All righty then, let's talk about what this episode is going
- 8:57to look like. So we've got some running
- 8:58results from City to Surf in Sydney, the same Walter Mile in
- 9:02the US and Meet in Belgium, which attracted a lot of
- 9:05Australian, Irish and British athletes called IF AM or Deja.
- 9:11We'll have some training weeks. We'll have some more news which
- 9:14we potentially missed last week because if you listen to last
- 9:18week's episode, it was that heavy on the running news from
- 9:21all the national champs. We didn't quite get through some
- 9:23more agenda items this week. I opened it up to the listener
- 9:27questions, so we've had some good responses there.
- 9:30We'll try and get through as many as we can and then the good
- 9:33old YouTube Diaries in Double Trouble will hopefully get a
- 9:35shelf at the end as well. So I think Owen is going to talk
- 9:40us through the first set of results.
- 9:43Yeah, so we'll head to Sydney first for the City to Surf,
- 9:48which sees 80,000 odd people flock to Sydney and run out to
- 9:53Bondi. I'm pretty sure it's the biggest
- 9:55fun run in the world, which is crazy.
- 10:00Anyway, the winner was Isaac Kane from SA who ran 4033,
- 10:05second was Sam Clifford who ran 4124 and 3rd was Thomas Dicanto
- 10:11who ran 4133. So Isaac Kane nearly winning by
- 10:16a minute there, which is pretty, pretty good.
- 10:20You see Sam Clifford and Tom Dicanto both on the like, Sydney
- 10:24elite field, aren't they? So I'm not sure whether they
- 10:27would have liked tapered and stuff into this, but
- 10:30nevertheless, potentially Tom Dicanto would be relatively
- 10:34happy with the small gap between himself and Sam Clifford there,
- 10:38given like the work that Sam Clifford's been putting in.
- 10:42Absolutely, and his strive isn't meant to be mental.
- 10:45Like I think he's doing like 50 kilometer long runs.
- 10:49So yeah, Sam Clifford is 100% on heavy legs.
- 10:53The women's was won by Bronte Oates who ran 4551.
- 10:59Second was Caitlin Adams who ran a 4634, and third was a Ruby
- 11:06Smee who ran a 4659. I'm not sure like our dem times,
- 11:11like it's a 12 KM race or 14 kilometer race.
- 11:14So I'm not sure how they stack up against previous years, but
- 11:18I'm sure definitely Isaac was moving.
- 11:20Yeah, I think the early context I had, because he won it last
- 11:24year and I think he was maybe was it 17 seconds quicker than
- 11:26last year. I think I saw it reported, but
- 11:29presumably that'd be pretty fast times based on the quality of
- 11:33athletes, right? Yeah, I think it was a wet day
- 11:37and so I can't remember where it was, where I see in it.
- 11:40Otherwise I would say someone said that if it wasn't W
- 11:44potentially as I came with the challenge, the course record
- 11:47which goes back to 91 apparently.
- 11:50I think it was really heavy rain.
- 11:51I've seen an Irish girl is over there running and I seen she's
- 11:55like, oh, I thought it was meant to be sunny every day of the
- 11:58year in Australia, but no, I think it was absolutely lashing
- 12:01rain. So yeah, that's serious running
- 12:03by them. It's interesting to see, well,
- 12:05not to see Ed Goddard in the top three.
- 12:10So yeah, I wonder what's going on with him.
- 12:12Yeah, I seen a photo of someone I know who just like kind of
- 12:16done it casually and the, you know, like the, what's the area
- 12:20called where like you gather afterwards, like the finish
- 12:22down, I guess isn't it? They're all like stood there and
- 12:26it looks like a typical British festival, you know, like
- 12:29absolute mud bath. I think it's the Bondi, isn't
- 12:33it? You finish your own Bondi.
- 12:36So with that, have you ever ran it there?
- 12:38No. No, now I think it used to be
- 12:40bigger. I'm not sure if maybe some of
- 12:42the funding for the event fell away some years back.
- 12:45Like I don't think it attracts the same sort of field as what
- 12:48it once used to. I tried to run it last year, but
- 12:52I was late entering it. And so I text the organizer and
- 12:55they're like, oh, the best we can do is like set you off on
- 12:58the last wave. And I was like, I think I'll
- 13:00leave it. Yeah.
- 13:02Where were you at the time? Were you in Queensland or?
- 13:05No, I was in Perth, I was going to fly over her.
- 13:08Oh, you were gonna, you were gonna head over for it.
- 13:10Yeah, yeah, yeah. Because like, it is like, it's a
- 13:12massive race, like city surf, like Sydney, Like it'd be cool
- 13:16to like, say I ran it, but it wasn't to be.
- 13:19Had you just got to Perth OR? I would have just got.
- 13:22That point, yeah. Trying to leave as soon as you
- 13:24got it. Business trip.
- 13:27Yeah. Well, the soon you say business
- 13:31trip I don't think do they have prize money they don't do they
- 13:33or do they? I'm not sure.
- 13:36Yeah, I don't know. It could be a bit like, yeah,
- 13:38it's like the per city to Surf, which is coming up in a few
- 13:40weeks. Used to have the support of
- 13:42Chevron, like one of the major oil and gas companies here used
- 13:47to fund quite. It was quite deep.
- 13:49They used to get like we had a marathon and had some very good
- 13:52prize money and attracted like Yuki Kawuchi had won it before
- 13:55and you know, other strong domestic runners would come over
- 13:59for the 12 K and the marathon and half marathon.
- 14:02But all that funding sort of fell away maybe 5-7 years ago.
- 14:06So, and I'm not sure if maybe city to surf took a bit of a
- 14:08similar turn the Sydney, Sydney to surf.
- 14:11Yeah, OK, fair enough. Next result then takes us to the
- 14:15US where there was 2 Australians in 1st and 2nd.
- 14:18So there was an elite men's mile and elite women's mile now in
- 14:22the men's field was won by Kai Robinson in 350.8.
- 14:28Second was Olly Hall in 350.96. And then from 3rd through most
- 14:35of the rest of the field were US athletes, as you would expect.
- 14:39So I did hear that Ollie Hall was saying he thought he might
- 14:43have been in Aussie record shape ahead of this and he was going
- 14:46to have a stab at it. I haven't actually seen any
- 14:48footage of the race, but I do believe the Aussie record is his
- 14:52own of 34748. So he's obviously come off a bit
- 14:56short of that. And interesting that Kyle
- 14:59Robinson's beaten him across the line because he's typically like
- 15:03a five more of a 5K guy, isn't he?
- 15:05Yeah, that's a good. I hadn't.
- 15:06I was just thinking about Kyle Robinson because we hadn't
- 15:08hadn't heard much from him right in the last couple of months.
- 15:12But I think he's run the standard has an E for world
- 15:15champ. So presumably, yeah, like you
- 15:16say, he's probably training for the 5K.
- 15:18So good science to have be running well over a shorter
- 15:22distance. So fingers crossed, that bodes
- 15:24well for next month. Yeah, he must sense that he
- 15:27needs to work on that closing speed.
- 15:30Generally, these races unfold over the past few weeks.
- 15:33So in the women's mile was three US athletes.
- 15:36Grace Morris won 423, Rachel MacArthur, who's the partner of
- 15:41Cupertier, second, 423 high. So that that was a very tight
- 15:46finish. And 3rd is a girl called Angel
- 15:50Picker Leo. Picker, Willow.
- 15:53Yeah, go on, go on, Angel. Started from where was that
- 15:59race? It's in the US somewhere, say
- 16:01welter mile. Interesting, right now we go to
- 16:06Belgium where I think it was the last proper, like fast to like 5
- 16:10KS or something 'cause there was a lot of Aussies, Brits on Irish
- 16:14over at it. So we'll start with the women's
- 16:175000 which was won by oh Jimmy Mac.
- 16:20Here we go Joy check Tieck from Uganda who ran 1440, second was
- 16:28Lauren Ryan who ran 1440 mid and 3rd was Mod Modi Mordi Sky Ring
- 16:37from Australia who ran 1451. Also in that race was India
- 16:42where she came. She's party Macau now.
- 16:46She needed to run What's the standard 1450 is that?
- 16:51Yeah, so she she ran 15 O 1. So she didn't have the standard,
- 16:55but it's still a PB for her and in the men's 800.
- 16:59Wait, wait, with that one, can I say that Lauren Ryan moved
- 17:05herself back into I think they're like 5000 team with
- 17:08that. So I think it was Linden Hall
- 17:11who she's gone ahead of and also more de sky ring.
- 17:14So like that was a race within the race between those two
- 17:18essentially, given that they were both running faster than
- 17:20the time that Linden had put down.
- 17:23So who's in that 5K now? So at the moment, who's number
- 17:26one? So obviously Rosie Davis has won
- 17:28two is Griffiths. Georgia Griffith.
- 17:32Yeah, Whether or not it's, I can't remember which.
- 17:34Yeah, that's it. That's the order.
- 17:36And then third line right now. Because they ran.
- 17:38Was it 32 and 33 at that London Diamond League?
- 17:42Yeah. And then 1440, like that's
- 17:45pretty 1440 would be, I would have thought going into this
- 17:48year, the Australian record, right, I don't think no female,
- 17:51Aussie female would run under 1440.
- 17:53So that's moving. It's 5K times are ridiculous and
- 17:56we'll see down below the lads times as well.
- 17:59Like outrageous. I genuinely think this track is
- 18:02short with some of the Times and PBS people.
- 18:04Again, the men's 800 was won by an Irish guy, Kane Mcphillips
- 18:11who ran 144 low. Second was Corinthian Le Slezio
- 18:17from France who ran 144 and then third was Alex Bottle from the
- 18:22UK who ran 145. Anton on that one ran.
- 18:29I think those two British guys were trying to chase the
- 18:31standard because they finished second and third in the
- 18:35Nationals last week, but looks like they came up slightly short
- 18:38although your boy got the standard.
- 18:41Mcphillips yeah, I think he had it already.
- 18:44He's flying right now. We'll go to the women's 1500.
- 18:50It was won by Marina Mendez or Marina Martinez from Spain and
- 18:56four O 3. Then second was Adele Gay from
- 19:01France in four O 3 mid and 3rd was Marawa Buzani from Tunisia
- 19:10who had four O 3, four O 3 high. Yeah, Sarah Claver was fourth
- 19:17from the UK who ran four O 4 and she was chasing the standard of
- 19:21four O 1. So she just misses out.
- 19:24I've stitched you up. With these results here this
- 19:26week, haven't I the? Names right the men's 1500
- 19:34Kieran Lum from Canada won in 334 second was Henry Henry
- 19:39Mcluckie from the UK in 334 mid and then third was Mark Tortel
- 19:46from Germany who ran 335 low. Other notable mention was Tom
- 19:52Keane who trains with Jake Whiteman from the UK.
- 19:56He ran APB of 335, James McMurray from the UK who's a
- 20:01Hoka athlete, he ran 337 which is APB, Shane Bracken from
- 20:05Ireland around 337 and Callum Elson from the UK who is known
- 20:10as like distance project. He ran a 337 as well, which was
- 20:14a season's best, and then results have no impact on the.
- 20:20Like men's UK 1500 meter team, which is Kurt Gurley and then
- 20:25it's a toss up between Giles and Whiteman.
- 20:29Next we'll go to the women's 800 who was who was won by Roca,
- 20:38Ariola Sora from Spain. I've butchered that.
- 20:42But yeah, 159 she ran Isabel Buffy from the UK ran 159 mid
- 20:49and then Olivia Baker from the US ran 159 high.
- 20:54Other noble mention from Australia was Tess Curtis up
- 20:58call, she ran a 201 and Carly Thomas ran a 202.
- 21:04Anything to add to that one, Ryan?
- 21:07Yeah, so as you can tell, I'm not doing any running, so I'm
- 21:11putting all my energy into the agenda notes for this Isabel
- 21:17Buffy, who's finished second here.
- 21:19I think that might be useful for her because it's a 15953, so
- 21:25Keely will obviously get a spot. Georgia Hunter Bell, who won
- 21:28nationals, she's still on the fence whether she does the 15 or
- 21:31the 8. So there's potentially her spot
- 21:34if she chooses to do the 15. And then Gemma Ricci has the
- 21:37other spot. So that open one is between this
- 21:40Isabel, Buffy and then Katie Snowden, Aaron Wallace, Abigail
- 21:43lives all be down to selectors discretion.
- 21:47So running sub two minutes here is going to do a no no harm
- 21:51whatsoever for the Australian girls.
- 21:57I think there's a little bit of too much depth ahead of them,
- 22:00but useful runs nevertheless. Now we'll go to the men's 5000
- 22:05meters, which was won by Cornelius Kemboy from Kenya in
- 22:101257. Second was Oscar Chilimo from
- 22:14Uganda who ran at 12:58 and 3rd was Adrian Whittleshute from
- 22:19South Africa who ran 1258 mid order.
- 22:23Notable mention was Luis Grijalva, who's a HOKA athlete
- 22:26who trains in America. He would have went to NAU, the
- 22:29college over there. He 1258 mid and I think that's
- 22:33his first race in the wild. I think it's been crucified
- 22:35doing injuries. So for him to just knock out the
- 22:37standard there is is good. And he runs for Guatemala.
- 22:40And then on the Irish side, Dara Mcelhenny from Cork in Ireland,
- 22:45he ran 12O2, which was, uh, I'm going to say 13 O2, Sorry,
- 22:51sorry, sorry. Yeah, 13 O2, which is like a
- 22:54massive PB, I think like a 13 second PB for him.
- 22:57And then he like Ireland have like different standards.
- 23:01So he's got the Irish standard now to go to worlds.
- 23:04Umm and then there was another guy, Nick Griggs, who had the
- 23:09park one world record for a while.
- 23:11He ran at 13 O 5, which again, massive PB for him.
- 23:16But yeah, like now that I think that moves Darryl Mcelhaney up
- 23:20to second all time on the Irish list and Nick Griggs is up to
- 23:235th and Nick Griggs is like, I don't know if he's even 20 yet.
- 23:27So and Andy Bouchard ran 1337 in his first race in a while.
- 23:34Yes, when I was looking at this, they had, they actually had two
- 23:375000 meter races and there's like about 50 athletes across
- 23:41the two of them. And usually when I see that
- 23:45there's like AB race, like no offense to those athletes who
- 23:48are 1,000,000 miles better than me, I won't look at the results
- 23:51because like the the main ones are in the A race.
- 23:54And then in this B race, you've got Andy, Andy Butcher, Alex Yi
- 23:59was in there running the 5000 meters.
- 24:02He's ran 1313, which is like, I just reckon that's remarkable
- 24:08considering his try background. And then OK, he's transitioned
- 24:11to running now, but doing a marathon to be able to run 1313
- 24:16/ 5000 meters like we've seen earlier on.
- 24:19Was it Phil Sussman had a bit of a go on the track this year and
- 24:23broke around 1329 or something? Yeah, that's wheels from him.
- 24:29But yeah, so like, like the top ten in that first race ran
- 24:33between 12:57 and 13O2, which is absolute bonkers.
- 24:38Like, but yeah, the steeplechase.
- 24:43Oh, first round. Sorry, I was just going to ask
- 24:45Dean, have you got any context on those two Aussie fellas from
- 24:49the second race, Jackson Sharp, who's run 1313 and Toby Gillan,
- 24:55who ran 1316 as well? I've never really heard of them.
- 24:59I've not heard of Toby. I have heard of Jackson Sharp.
- 25:02I thought he was AUS college athlete.
- 25:05I'm not sure which college he represents, but yeah.
- 25:10Born in the year 2000. So what?
- 25:12What are they in 2001? So what's that, 2425?
- 25:16It's my yeah, there's guys out there running, running that fast
- 25:19and like, relatively unheard of. Well, the guy who won that first
- 25:23race was born in 2005, Herbert Kibet from Uganda.
- 25:28But yeah, anyway, men steeplechase which was pretty
- 25:33good. On the Aussie side the winner
- 25:36was Lewis Gilivert from France who ran 811.
- 25:41Then second was Baptiste Fourmont from France who ran 812
- 25:45low and then third was Estan Barros from Portugal who ran
- 25:50812.19 and it will mention Ed Trippus from Australia ran
- 25:56813.15 which is APB and a national record which is taking
- 26:03it from Sean Crichton who ran 816 and he also got the standard
- 26:08for the world's which was 815. Ben Buckingham ran 815.14, so
- 26:16he's like .14 of a second off the qualifying standard, which
- 26:20is very, it's a tough pill to swallow.
- 26:23And then Mattie Clark was 14th in 816, so that's savage running
- 26:30from the Aussies. I'd love to say that.
- 26:32Have you seen if that race is available to?
- 26:35It was behind the paywall. Yeah, like all of them running
- 26:38that fast within what, 5 seconds between 1st and 14th?
- 26:42What has what has Beamish run? I thought maybe like 809 just
- 26:49sort of guess something like that.
- 26:50Like I don't think he's got that close to 8 minutes.
- 26:53But that's crazy. He's not that far off.
- 26:55He's an on athlete, isn't he? Yeah.
- 26:57Yeah, yeah. Yeah, yeah, I had.
- 27:01I caught up with Raff this morning and he was telling me
- 27:04that the greenies over there and like Greenie like kind of looks
- 27:08after Ed and stuff now. So like, not a bad start to the
- 27:12career, like getting a quick national record out the way.
- 27:15No, that's unreal. Does it doesn't show his age?
- 27:17He's not he's, I'd say he's around our age, is he?
- 27:19Yeah, I reckon mid 20s if not early.
- 27:22February had done, but yeah, that's that race.
- 27:25Guys. There's something in the water
- 27:26in Belgium. There's so many fast races over
- 27:29there. You'll have to come over.
- 27:31I'm I'll hopefully do this one next year or something like
- 27:33that. Might break 13 by the looks of
- 27:35it. So I'll have to go scroll into
- 27:38the to the G race for your results.
- 27:43Ouch. It's all right.
- 27:45I wouldn't get in on the prelim. I don't think I would either
- 27:49looking at the times, but yeah, that's the results.
- 27:52That that staple Chase record, that was the staple Chase
- 27:56record, as you mentioned, sort of stood for a long time.
- 27:59And Shaw Crichton's probably one of the most light decorated
- 28:02Australian distance runners. So like a pretty special record.
- 28:05I think to see full like he, I think he's been quite the
- 28:09advocate for Australian distance running.
- 28:12I think he's been and maybe still is like part of the panel
- 28:15of selectors or involved in that capacity.
- 28:18He came over and ran the Perth Marathon in 2018.
- 28:24I think it was chasing like an Australian masters record.
- 28:29Still very fit, fit dude was running.
- 28:31I think he won the quite certainly won the Perth marathon
- 28:35that year as well. Catched up a few.
- 28:37It's crazy that. So that's 1993.
- 28:40And then like there last night, two people beat it.
- 28:43Like Ben Buckingham went under it as well.
- 28:45So yeah, yeah, I. Mean, like we say that's yeah,
- 28:48that's that's seriously fast, isn't it?
- 28:50Like, I mean, 8 meters at 8 minutes is like the magical
- 28:54time, isn't it? Do you remember Evan Jagger?
- 28:57I think was I think going to break 8 minutes and fell on the
- 29:00last staple I think. But that's sort of like the best
- 29:04the best times I think I can remember.
- 29:06It's crazy that they. Run that like while jumping
- 29:08hurdles. Yeah, yeah.
- 29:13So that Ben Buckingham. I think he trains with MCC,
- 29:15doesn't he? I'm not sure about Matthew Claw.
- 29:18Matthew Clarke's. SA SA where team Tampa, we think
- 29:22isn't he Oh shit, so and then you've.
- 29:24Got Ed trippers with on Oceana so it's like 3 different
- 29:28Australian like training groups there.
- 29:29Yeah. So yeah, George.
- 29:31Pemish has run 809.64 and that's the area record, so those guys
- 29:36are pretty close to that. They're not far off at.
- 29:39Like just and again, another good race with El Bakali in it
- 29:42or something and you're nearly there.
- 29:45That's cool. So that's the results.
- 29:47Round off, I don't know if yeah, if both of you guys want to go
- 29:51through your training this week or or what.
- 29:54I conscious I haven't really said anything for a little
- 29:56while, so I was going to not tell you anything about
- 29:59training. Well, actually maybe a little
- 30:00bit, but I've got a few funny stories from from this week's
- 30:04escapades if if you'll listen to.
- 30:09Go over it, look forward to it. The first.
- 30:12One, it's actually not that funny.
- 30:14Maybe in a few days it'll be funny, but right now I was a
- 30:16little bit raw still. So this comes from this morning.
- 30:20I was on the bike and this podcast almost wasn't happening
- 30:24because somehow I've walked away with just a few cuts and
- 30:27scratches, but I got cleaned out by a youth.
- 30:30What, you know, Well, listeners won't know, but you guys might.
- 30:35Also, I'll try and keep it contextual for everyone.
- 30:37So the road we live on is kind of like a main road through the
- 30:40city. So it's coming down Adelaide
- 30:42Terrace past the Balti Indian restaurant.
- 30:46Not that that matters, but essentially a guy on the other
- 30:49side of the road was at a set of lights and he was turning right.
- 30:53So like crossing ahead of me as I'm heading just straight down
- 30:57this road. I'm on green light, green light,
- 30:59green light. And next minute I just see this
- 31:01guy just start to start his turn right across me.
- 31:05I'm like, oh shit, what am I going to do?
- 31:06Like you haven't got much time to think of.
- 31:08Yeah. And then so just slammed on the
- 31:10brakes because I was going like, I was given it a nudge.
- 31:15It hasn't stopped. It's just started skidding.
- 31:18And thankfully I managed to like twist the bike slightly.
- 31:23So rather than go like straight into him of like, you know, like
- 31:26went into it with my shoulder. And also thankfully he got
- 31:30further past me so that he wasn't making front on contact
- 31:34with me, rather I was going into the side of his thing.
- 31:37And then I've went fucking flying, got up obviously like
- 31:42what? What the hell has just gone on?
- 31:44Like start shouting. I'm a bit like it was on green
- 31:46light, like what were you playing at?
- 31:48And thankfully as well, there's a couple of pedestrians around
- 31:51and they, when this guy, I think he was like Italian, to be fair,
- 31:54he was probably full of shock and adrenaline as well because
- 31:57he obviously didn't see me otherwise he wouldn't have gone.
- 32:00So he's like, something's just smacked into the side of my car
- 32:04and he's shouting at me. And then these pedestrians have
- 32:07been like, no, it's like green light.
- 32:08Like did you not see him? Like what are you not looking?
- 32:11Blah blah. And I was obviously like shaking
- 32:15of off adrenaline. So straightaway I didn't know
- 32:17like if anything seriously had happened.
- 32:20But thankfully nothing seems to materialize.
- 32:23So got away with 1. So he didn't.
- 32:26Check his like right hand mirror to see you coming now.
- 32:29So he's. Looking straight ahead at me
- 32:32essentially as I'm coming towards him, he's just turned
- 32:35right and hasn't seen me coming down the road.
- 32:37Somehow there's no cars, bikes a little bit.
- 32:41Well I didn't even look at it to be fair.
- 32:42I see in the the tape wrap on the bars was all ripped and
- 32:47stuff but hopefully cosmetically it's not got too much damage
- 32:51because I. Remember, I used to, like, cycle
- 32:54when I was injured here and a car, like, shoved me into a curb
- 32:58and I fell and like, I buckled myself, like, cut all the hands
- 33:01and then like, you have to like, carry the bike home.
- 33:04My bike was fucked. So yeah, it's because you don't
- 33:08realize how fast you're going on the bike.
- 33:11Like, you could be going, let's say, like 3035 kilometers an
- 33:14hour. And when you fall off like there
- 33:16is serious momentum behind you and the fact that you like went
- 33:20into a fucking Ute shit that could have been bad his.
- 33:25His you had the big, big hole in it from where my big broad
- 33:29shoulders just nailed it. I'd love to see the.
- 33:33Italian and a lad from Merseyside talk.
- 33:37The language barrier would have been terrible.
- 33:41Yeah, the Australians. Were translating.
- 33:46You didn't get his details, He just left it at that.
- 33:48Yeah, no the. The standards by were like
- 33:51taking photos of like his Reg and novels stood there and that
- 33:54because I just didn't really know what was going on.
- 33:57They got his number, they got my number and like they sent it all
- 33:59through. So like really grateful for
- 34:01them. But yeah, thankfully I don't
- 34:04think I'm not going to do anything with it because I'm not
- 34:06really here properly. So and by the end of it he was
- 34:10coming to like, oh, I just didn't see you and stuff type of
- 34:13thing like eventually took some like ownership for it.
- 34:17So I appreciate he was like very shocked in the first instance as
- 34:21well. It's just one of them.
- 34:23Luckily, nothing else. Comfort, not much he.
- 34:26Can do that close to home either, like in terms of because
- 34:28there are some really good paths around Perth, you know, those
- 34:32pass it, run parallel with some of the major like arterial roads
- 34:37that you can ride on to avoid because that's the hard part.
- 34:39You're not at fault there, but you're the one that's going to
- 34:42be always be worse off, right. So you're sort of the danger of
- 34:45cycling, you know, whether or not there's footpaths you can
- 34:50find. Yeah.
- 34:52It's annoying as well because I'd literally done my longest
- 34:54ride this morning which like cyclists are triathlete to laugh
- 34:57at. Was 53 K, but I was coming home
- 35:00all smoke like nice Sunday long ride then blah blah, blah along
- 35:05all those the river paths and stuff.
- 35:07Like it's it was such a nice day as well because it's been wet a
- 35:10lot. And then yeah.
- 35:12But the the the other funny story to lift the mood slightly
- 35:18was in my absence of running, Becky is noticed like I've run
- 35:23out of excuses to like stay no to go into bloody Pilates.
- 35:26So she's cashed in on the fact that I'm not running.
- 35:29So yeah, yesterday I finally caved and we went to this strong
- 35:34Pilates like a bloody mad cult in there.
- 35:38All these girls and stuff were like insanely strong and
- 35:44cardiovascular fit on these. So it's like a reformer Pilates
- 35:47machine with either a bike egg or a rower on the end of it.
- 35:52And then they've got racks of dumbbells.
- 35:54So you go from the reformer like pulling your glutes and your
- 35:58hamstring everywhere, jump on a bike and smash 20 calories, and
- 36:02then you doing all these cleaning jerks with the
- 36:04dumbbell. Anyway, first exercise doing
- 36:08glute bridges. Just.
- 36:13Imagine. I pay to see this.
- 36:16Oh my God. Yeah, you don't even know what
- 36:18I'm. Going to say yes, yeah, but
- 36:20you're just the. Visual of you is probably.
- 36:25Almost enough. So she gets us warming up, doing
- 36:31glute bridges on this reformer because there was two of us.
- 36:36It was like you shared one reformer.
- 36:38So whilst I'm doing something, Becky's not, so she's just stood
- 36:41there, I'm doing me glute bridge.
- 36:43And then she like says to me, have you been the toilet?
- 36:47And I'm like glute bridged off like she's like, you sure to
- 36:53have you been the toilet? And then there's a big massive
- 36:57long mirror right in front of us.
- 36:58So I just look down and see this mark on my shorts.
- 37:02I've got a pair of like light grey shorts on as well.
- 37:06And I just looked and said I'm going to have to go.
- 37:09So I walked out the class, out the session and into the
- 37:12bathroom. I'm trying to figure out what it
- 37:14is like giving it a sniff and like, can't be.
- 37:19And then thankfully I realized it was.
- 37:22It was like ground coffee. I'd sat in it, but it was like
- 37:26right on the crotch there. So I missed.
- 37:30Like the 1st 10 minutes because I have my shorts in the sink
- 37:33scrubbing it and then to make it even, to cap it off, went back
- 37:41in. And then the reformer, the the
- 37:45end of it, what your feet slide on is multifunctional in that
- 37:49that becomes the seat of a rower.
- 37:50You know what I mean? Goes forwards and backwards.
- 37:53So then I've been like, OK, let's get on with this class sat
- 37:56on their rowing. And because it's part of the
- 37:59reformer to have it static and fixed in, you can lock it or
- 38:04then to make it the rower, you can unlock it and it slides
- 38:06forward and backwards. And as I've slid in, it's like
- 38:09locked in. I've went to pull back with the
- 38:12rower and because of the friction between this leather
- 38:17seat and my shorts, my shorts have stayed where they are.
- 38:21My arts has come out of them and fell onto the floor.
- 38:27On the row with. My arse hanging out of it and I
- 38:30was just like, Oh my God, I'm this just isn't meant to be.
- 38:33I'm going to Oh, Ryan. Oh my God.
- 38:40I wish I was there. So will you be back?
- 38:44What did? Becky say.
- 38:45That was a tech box. Exercise.
- 38:47We're done. She's like it's I promise it
- 38:49won't be this bad next time. Well, it can't get any.
- 38:52Worse. Well, this is true.
- 38:54Did you get a good workout? From it you feel activated, feel
- 38:57more mobile. Oh my, hamstrings on fire.
- 39:01It's highlighted all. The weaknesses, which is every
- 39:04single muscle in my body was your you.
- 39:07Have to. Yeah, was your.
- 39:10Achilles alright doing it and I'll Oh no.
- 39:12So that's the other. Thing you have to, because it's
- 39:14reformer. You barefoot.
- 39:16Well, you have to grip socks on. So I was very paranoid about
- 39:21that. Yeah.
- 39:21I wasn't very comfortable, counterproductive even.
- 39:27Other than that, you had a good week.
- 39:29Other than that. Successful week, training loads
- 39:31up and chorus says optimized. So still still moving in the
- 39:36right direction somehow. The little chorus man.
- 39:39'S starting to starting to crawl.
- 39:41Yeah, he's just got a brown stained pair of shorts around
- 39:45his ankles this week, I believe that day you can talk some
- 39:51actual running, please. I can maybe take it out.
- 39:54Just a notch, but not by much. To be honest, my week was pretty
- 40:00after Sunday. I was a bit sore.
- 40:03I sort of have like I've had pain in my leg, right abdominal,
- 40:07lower abdominal area before and it's sort of.
- 40:10I could feel it going into Sunday's half marathon, but it
- 40:13was particularly bad, I think because it was quite wet and
- 40:15slippery didn't help. And I think I've aggravated
- 40:20something. And so yeah, I tried jogging to
- 40:24work on Monday. It didn't wasn't all that
- 40:26successful. I did get to and from the
- 40:28office, but not without it being still in a degree of pain.
- 40:31So I went and saw physio on Tuesday and it looks like it's
- 40:36some sort of like like sports hernia.
- 40:38I think is was the diagnosis. So some sort of abdominal
- 40:42weakness on like like lower, lower right hand side.
- 40:48I don't think it's new. It's just sort of the sorest.
- 40:51I've felt it before, which is a bit annoying.
- 40:53So yeah, I'm taking some anti inflammatories and try and sort
- 40:58of just, it meant that I would have got back into training on
- 41:01the Thursday, but sort of kept it until Saturday before I sort
- 41:05of got back into some form of training.
- 41:06So yeah, sort of jogged throughout the rest of the week.
- 41:10Sorry, Ron, is that something? You've dealt with in the past
- 41:13then this thing or not really. Yeah, so in. 2023 on or around
- 41:18Gold Coast. I had similar pain and went and
- 41:21got an MRI and it didn't show anything but certainly felt it.
- 41:25I haven't felt it this bad before.
- 41:28Yeah. And so, yeah, so it is something
- 41:30that I've dealt with. And when I was sort of chatting
- 41:32to Steve about it, he sort of mentioned that maybe around 80%
- 41:35of these sorts of injuries don't present on an MRI.
- 41:40So I didn't realize that at a time.
- 41:42So I sort of just previously dismissed it to being put it
- 41:45down to maybe or something less than maybe what it was for
- 41:49better, for worse. But I was able to train on it
- 41:51and to be honest, up until fairly recently, hadn't noticed
- 41:54the pain and then had sort of felt the pain getting worse.
- 41:58And then, yeah, after the race, like, I could feel it in the
- 42:01race on Sunday. You know, when you're racing, if
- 42:04you can feel pain while you're racing, you know, it must be
- 42:06pretty bad because normally as you sort of warm up and and
- 42:10putting in most pains sort of go away.
- 42:12You know, like all the niggles and stuff tend to fall away when
- 42:14you're sort of getting stuck in. So I knew when I was feeling it
- 42:17quite a bit in the race. So that's not good.
- 42:18And yeah, by Monday I was like pretty sore.
- 42:21But yeah, so I sort of, I'm hopeful that I can sort of
- 42:24manage it and get on top of it. I'm sort of was in the gym
- 42:27Monday night during doing some gym exercises.
- 42:29I haven't done gym in a while. And then did another sort of gym
- 42:32session at home during the week. So I'm trying to do all that
- 42:35sort of stuff that I'd normally neglect and then just jogging.
- 42:38And it did, it is starting to come good, I think.
- 42:41Well, it's certainly better than what it was, which is good.
- 42:45But you had a A tempo on Saturday morning, unhelpfully,
- 42:50it was in Kings Park. So nice that it sort of started
- 42:53uphill and felt fine on the uphill, like probably like 0 to
- 42:56one out of 10, Like it was sort of of the way, but nothing more.
- 43:00But then, yeah, coming down the hill, like aerobically, I felt
- 43:03really good. I was sort of wanting to press
- 43:04and get after it. I was like one of those mornings
- 43:06because I'd had five days of just jogging.
- 43:09I felt I was really looking forward to the session.
- 43:11But I just, it hurt. It was getting, the pain was
- 43:13getting worse. So I sort of only just did the
- 43:1530 minute tempo, didn't do any of the heel accelerations that
- 43:18normally follow, which is a bit annoying way to end the sort of
- 43:21workout. But did something, cooled down,
- 43:25went for a jog Saturday afternoon.
- 43:28It was felt, yeah, like one or two out of 10, which is good.
- 43:32And then, yeah, it did a couple of hours this morning, a bit
- 43:35similar, sort of one to two out of 10.
- 43:36Nothing substantial, so I'm hoping that it's something
- 43:39that'll just go resolve itself, but we'll see how we go.
- 43:42So yeah, 130 KS for the week and yeah, something to manage.
- 43:47But yeah, I'm hoping it's not anything that I have to get to
- 43:50be caught up with, are they? Hernias, can you get them like
- 43:53surgically removed people off the mouth or?
- 43:57I think like a traditional sort of, it's sort of like
- 44:01traditionally it's sort of like you've got really talking out of
- 44:05turn here, but I think you normally have like some sort of
- 44:07like hole in sort of your abdominal area, some sort of
- 44:10tear. And that's when like a more
- 44:12traditional 1, you sort of, you know, something could poke
- 44:15through. I think my understanding is this
- 44:17is more of sort of like a weakening of an area.
- 44:19I think you can get some sort of surgical procedure that puts
- 44:22some sort of mesh which sort of reinforces the sort of weakened
- 44:25area. So that's certainly, I know like
- 44:28like I know Nick's had Nick who used to run with front runner.
- 44:31He's had that in the past to sort of remedy his.
- 44:35He had like a more long term issue with it.
- 44:37I'm hopeful that this is something that I can sort of get
- 44:40on top of, but we'll see. So yeah, that's an option.
- 44:42That's something that's a path that I have to entertain maybe.
- 44:46So I might have to get an MRI in a week or two if I'm still in a
- 44:49fair degree of comfort, but we'll see. 130.
- 44:52K still good for a ninja's week. Thanks.
- 44:55Yeah, yeah, try and. Keep the ball rolling and like I
- 44:59tried. To allude to last Monday to you,
- 45:01but you, you weren't entertainer at the time.
- 45:03Like a damn week in the long run wouldn't have done you any harm
- 45:07really. As long as the injury doesn't
- 45:09like continue to be a problem. Yeah, that's right.
- 45:12Yeah, I just hate having time off, but yeah.
- 45:18Right. Over to Ireland now and I
- 45:22started off with so Monday was a bank holiday over here.
- 45:27So am I done 60 minutes in the morning, 13 kilometers and then
- 45:32in the evening I done 30 minutes with a few strides at the end of
- 45:36it feeling pretty good post post race.
- 45:40Then on Tuesday I had a 2 by so this sort of double threshold
- 45:45day. So I done 2 by 15 minutes in the
- 45:47morning and then in the evening I done 4 by 5 minutes.
- 45:53And I go to this place for my second session.
- 45:56It's like the village, like next to me and they have this sort of
- 45:59like 1K loop, but it must be the windiest place in the country.
- 46:04You get like halfway around the loop and you just met by like a
- 46:08massive headwind. So well, in the back of my mind,
- 46:11like I'm trying to hit these paces.
- 46:13Like I really have to take like the wind into consideration.
- 46:17But yeah, again, feeling all right.
- 46:20And like that was a massive day that was nearly 2 kilometers for
- 46:22the day between warm up and cool down.
- 46:24Do you find because? You know, off the back of a
- 46:27couple of good races getting fitter and you've been doing
- 46:30double threshold for a while. Do you find particularly on that
- 46:33second threshold, you're starting to get a bit more, a
- 46:36bit more willing and a bit more wanting to see some positive
- 46:39feedback when it comes to the splits and you're sort of
- 46:41wanting to push a bit I. Do and like I do and I don't
- 46:47like at the end of the day, like if my body doesn't want to go
- 46:50fast, like I'm not going to force it.
- 46:52Like if then paces feel good to me, yeah, I'll roll with them,
- 46:55but I'm not going to force it. And like I'm looking at the
- 46:59higher rate as well. And the higher rate is a massive
- 47:00indicator for me. So I'm again, just trying to
- 47:03keep it like mid one 70s for that second session.
- 47:06And if it's anywhere above that, even if the pace drops
- 47:08dramatically and I'll just drop it like it's not worth digging
- 47:12myself into a hole, especially like it's a big week this week,
- 47:15so don't want to burn out. Wednesday I done 75 minutes in
- 47:22the morning, which was 16 kilometers.
- 47:27And then in the evening I had my circus class.
- 47:32Thursday was like a sort of a midweek long run.
- 47:34So it was 90 minutes and after 30 minutes either pick up for 20
- 47:41minutes and then like return back to like the original pace.
- 47:47So yeah, 22 kilometers for that run.
- 47:52And I tried to drop it. Yeah, go on then.
- 47:54I think you were just going. To answer what I was going to
- 47:57ask. The goal for these ones is to
- 48:00like drop it down. So because of a 10 mile race
- 48:03coming up, like try and drop it down to a pace like close to
- 48:07race pace and now like I'll drop it down as much as I can.
- 48:11Like that feels comfortable to me, like like below a 310, like
- 48:16let's be real, like in a big heavy week, like that's not
- 48:18going to feel comfortable, which is ideally what I'd like to be
- 48:21racing at. So I think I dropped it down to
- 48:24like 3/23/22 or something like that.
- 48:29But and like that felt comfortable.
- 48:30Like I felt like that was like big pace, like a good pace for
- 48:34me. Umm, so yeah.
- 48:37And like in the back of my mind, like I have a rest day the next
- 48:40day. So like once I get through that
- 48:42Thursday morning session, umm, I'm sort of that's me done in
- 48:47the evening. Then I sort of went gym and I
- 48:49lifted that little bit heavier and then yeah, Friday totally
- 48:53off. And then Saturday, Saturdays are
- 48:57are hard. So the Saturday session was so
- 49:0315 minute one would cool down. It was 2 by 1 K.
- 49:07The one KS were in like around like 72 second laps.
- 49:11So yeah, I did. Is this is this at the are?
- 49:15You at the track on a on a Saturday?
- 49:16Yeah, I go to like a. Tartan track close to me, yeah.
- 49:20So yeah, 2 by 1K in around 3 minute pace, 72 second laps, and
- 49:24then I had 10 by 3000 just between them.
- 49:28One KS was 90 seconds then and I'd done them in the shoe I
- 49:32might wear for the race, which is the New Balance Super
- 49:38Complete V4 because I wore them for the half in Japan and then I
- 49:44wore them for that race Iran shit in in Tasmania.
- 49:48So now I'm like, do I want to wear them again?
- 49:51But like they're pretty fresh and I feel like it's just a
- 49:54waste of money if I like don't wear them.
- 49:56So I don't know, because I was talking to RAF about them and
- 50:00he's like for like the shortest shorter distances.
- 50:03Like they're really like a long distance shoe.
- 50:05So I don't know, like 16 kilometers.
- 50:08Is it long? What did you wear?
- 50:10What? Did you wear for that five mile
- 50:11race? You did.
- 50:13I wore. This Nike Streak flight which is
- 50:15like a 5K10K shoe OK. It's pretty minimal like you
- 50:19can. Feel the ground in a base, Yeah.
- 50:21And then like, realistically, I'll have like this race coming
- 50:25up next week and then I don't know when my next road race is
- 50:28going to be. So do I really want to cash out?
- 50:30I actually have a pair of old Nike Alpha flies, but I don't
- 50:36know if I want to use them up either.
- 50:38OK. Are you happy with this diet of
- 50:41them? You just don't know if you want
- 50:42if you're. I don't want to waste them.
- 50:44Yeah. None of us have.
- 50:46Tried those PMS of the I keep. I'm starting to see now like
- 50:49people are loving them. I'm torn.
- 50:51Between getting like a pair of them Pumas or like a pair of the
- 50:54ASIC one, the new ASIC. Yeah, exactly.
- 50:57Yeah, I can't just like the shoes are so expensive over
- 51:00here, lads. Like they're nearly €300, which
- 51:03if you put that on to Aussie dollar, it's like 500 odd, like
- 51:05more than $500. Yeah, that's crazy.
- 51:08It's crazy. Like I.
- 51:09Haven't paid full price for a shoe over here.
- 51:11I just go to like Nike outlet and buy a cheap pair of shoes.
- 51:14Like I just can't justify. You should have brought more
- 51:17shoes. And shipped them home.
- 51:18I know and I actually. Bought a pair of them, you got
- 51:21one. Suitcase full, I bought a.
- 51:25Pair of the Puma Velocity fours, they're like sort of a, a
- 51:30lightweight daily trainer, sort of minimal enough sort of shoe.
- 51:33And like, I really like it. But like, I've done one run in
- 51:37it and like a part of the Puma start coming off and I was on
- 51:42about, I contacted the people that I bought the shoe off and
- 51:45they're like, all right, you're going to have to, you're going
- 51:48to have to like box it up and send it back to us.
- 51:51And I'm like, well, it's sort of like, not my fault that it's
- 51:54like a manufacturer issue because I made-up that I live in
- 51:56the middle. Well, I do live in the middle of
- 51:58fucking nowhere. But then I'd have to go out and
- 52:01buy a box and then go to the post office and like it troll me
- 52:04so much out of my way. So they're like, no, that's the
- 52:07only thing you can do. So I'm just literally wearing a
- 52:09pair of like broken Pima shoes now because I've paid the money
- 52:12for them, but I think they're not too bad.
- 52:14They were like €110, which yeah, which is all right.
- 52:19But. Like it's just annoying like all
- 52:21them super shoes are so expensive.
- 52:23How did the Super compilates? Feel when you did the K reps in
- 52:27them like they felt. They feel good, but yeah, they
- 52:30feel good. And then I switched to the Rebel
- 52:32like for my 300 reps 10 by 300 off 60 seconds.
- 52:36And I'd done them in around high 48 low 40 nines.
- 52:40And like, I can like, you feel a massive difference going from
- 52:45the Super Oh yeah to. The rebel your.
- 52:47Legs are like what the hell yeah so like it did feel good.
- 52:53I'm just afraid to wear them now since I ran shit in them in
- 52:56Tasmania. So I don't know what to do or I
- 52:59could go for the Nike ones, but I just might beat up my legs a
- 53:03lot because like 16 K like it is a it is a bit.
- 53:08Do you remember how you pulled up?
- 53:09After the 10 1/2 marathon running in the Super complex.
- 53:14Oh yeah, I feel. Grand, it's just they're super,
- 53:15super soft. Like I sort of like feeling the
- 53:17ground. I like I love them.
- 53:19Nike Streak flies 'cause you can actually feel the ground.
- 53:21That's what I'd be really tempted.
- 53:23I'd be really tempted to try and the Brooks one that Jake wears
- 53:26because he was like, it's more of like an old school, like you
- 53:28can feel the ground and then and so, yeah, when you're thinking
- 53:33about. Those streak flies.
- 53:35I mean, you might think differently, but we have to
- 53:37consider that 16 K, although it's kind of in the middle of
- 53:4110K and half marathon, it's probably closer to half marathon
- 53:44than 10K still, isn't it? Yeah, exactly.
- 53:46Which is. Why?
- 53:47I'm really torn. I don't know.
- 53:49Go barefoot maybe? Well, either way you've.
- 53:52Given yourself an excuse if it goes wrong, yeah.
- 53:58Anyway, back to Saturday. So yeah, I done 10 by 300 and
- 54:02off 60 seconds recovery. And then I had two by one K at
- 54:06the end and I sort of had like free reign to sort of push it a
- 54:09little bit. And yeah, I sort of popped.
- 54:15The first one was in. Wait, let me get it up here.
- 54:19The first one was in, I think I hit like 250 per kilometer.
- 54:23And then the second one, like I could feel the last sort of like
- 54:27200. I was just like being shocked by
- 54:29that lactic sniper. Did you?
- 54:34No. No, I've got 1 bike carb left,
- 54:36so I'm sort of saving it for the race of the weekend.
- 54:39Yeah. And so yeah, I done 250 and then
- 54:42the last Rep was a 256. So ideally they were going to be
- 54:46in like 240, like 240 minutes. But yeah, I just had nothing
- 54:51like going through 400 of that last Rep.
- 54:53I was like, this is going to be so unlike my coaches, I I had 90
- 54:57seconds between the reps and he's like, I'll give you 2
- 54:59minutes. And I was like, yeah, that, that
- 55:02extra. 30. Seconds.
- 55:03Yeah, Extra seconds going to nothing.
- 55:04It's going to prolong the suffering.
- 55:06So I'm flooded, Yeah. Going through the four. 100 I
- 55:09was like, oh, this is going to be so painful.
- 55:11But yeah, I tried to hold it together, but like AK were to
- 55:15work, which is yeah, I was like again, like it was not wasn't
- 55:19like out of the park sort of session, but it's like AB plus
- 55:23session so I can't really complain.
- 55:25And that evening I got out undone like 45 minutes easy.
- 55:28And then this morning was a relatively big one.
- 55:31I had two hours. After 45 minutes, I had to pick
- 55:38it up for 20, and then I'd get back down to my normal pace and
- 55:42then for the last 15 minutes I picked up again.
- 55:45It's sort of a similar situation to Thursday for them pickups
- 55:48just to find like a nice pace. So yeah, I think I was sitting
- 55:51like around 3 twenties, 320 mid again for them.
- 55:55So that was two hours, 30.9 kilometers, average base of 353,
- 56:01which it's always nice when you get under the four minute
- 56:03barrier for them. Long runs are you when you're.
- 56:07Out doing these big like long loops around yours, are you
- 56:10seeing many other runners so the.
- 56:12One, the midweek one, I do it like around where I live, so I
- 56:16see basically no one, just few cars.
- 56:19But for that one this morning, I don't know.
- 56:22In the Phoenix Park in Dublin and guys, it was Dublin markings
- 56:27coming up. So every, there was so many
- 56:30people out running. It was really, really cool to
- 56:32see. And what's the commute from?
- 56:34Yours to Phoenix Park also around like 40.
- 56:37Minutes. Not too bad.
- 56:39No, it's not the worst. And like that I'd done the race
- 56:41loop that is next week when you go in there.
- 56:43Would you not be able to find people to do it with?
- 56:47I do when I was going. To text my mate to get on the
- 56:49bike and but that some of the lads were that like basically,
- 56:54this is going to seem really sad, but I very little running
- 56:56friends in Ireland and especially with the long run,
- 57:00like some people just go out and do the long run because I've
- 57:03pickups in it. It's just, it's just awkward
- 57:05sell. Yeah.
- 57:07So when you carry in them. Boiled eggs doesn't help either.
- 57:12Boiled eggs are in the booty car.
- 57:14Oh yeah. And then after the run, during
- 57:15the run, I gels just to keep me filled up.
- 57:19And then after the run, yeah, chocolate milk, 2 boiled eggs
- 57:22and them some rice pudding. But yeah, I had, I bought this
- 57:27little like camping chair and I have it in my boot of the car.
- 57:31So like after like I sort of bring it to the track unless at
- 57:34the weekend or like for the likes that I just whip out the
- 57:38chair and just put my feet up in the boot of the car and just
- 57:40like chill for a minute because I was fairly, umm, beat up from
- 57:44that run. And I wore like the ASIC Noble
- 57:46Blast, which is like it's like sort of a daily trainer, but it
- 57:51wouldn't it beat up your legs that a little bit more than the
- 57:53Super Blast. Like I have a pair of Super
- 57:55Blast there, but they're sort of getting yeah, why wouldn't you
- 57:58go the. Super blast instead of the so I
- 58:01was talking. To I was talking to he goes, you
- 58:04know, this person that is really good at running on YouTube, on
- 58:07Instagram, and I was asking him about shoes and he was saying
- 58:13that you'd be better off if you can hold a handle it.
- 58:16You're better off doing a long run in, let's say, like a Nike
- 58:20Romero 17 and work working their legs that little bit more, even
- 58:25if it means you can't hit the paces.
- 58:28Like let's say if I was wearing a pair of super shoes there
- 58:30today, like I probably could have hitting them, hitting my
- 58:33pickups like a lot faster. But because I'm in a shoe that
- 58:36sort of works the legs more. Like when I get into the Super
- 58:39shoes, I should feel like the benefits, like it's sort of like
- 58:41hardening up my legs in tearing. Well, in my head, that's the way
- 58:44it works. So yeah, I've started doing all
- 58:47my long runs and sort of just like basic shoes and I always
- 58:50find that. Interesting that logic, because
- 58:51you aren't you introducing potentially more risk I suppose
- 58:55taking there's. Definitely pros and cons to it
- 58:58like and like shoes have come on so much that like the good shoes
- 59:02are there, so why shouldn't I use them?
- 59:04And like that's 142 kilometers for the week.
- 59:07So like that was a big week. So like I'd be on my legs a lot.
- 59:11So in theory, I probably should have wore the Super blasts just
- 59:14like give my legs that a little bit more.
- 59:16But like I'm going to have a down time now and probably 2-3
- 59:19weeks. So I don't know, I'll see how I
- 59:22feel like tomorrow morning, tomorrow morning, like I'll
- 59:25probably just plod, plod along just and like Tuesday's double
- 59:29threshold, I'll be like super conservative because it has been
- 59:32a massive week. So how you feeling because.
- 59:35You've done some like quality in pretty much most days of this
- 59:38week as well, right? Yeah, sprinkled in a little
- 59:40quality. In a lot of places and like this
- 59:44morning, I felt really poppy. So I just really just need to
- 59:47take the recovery pretty seriously.
- 59:49Like I was going to do sauna there tonight, but it's sort of
- 59:52putting your body through more stress.
- 59:54Like the sauna is like your heart rate's getting up.
- 59:56It's probably put more stress in the body that I don't need.
- 59:58So I'm just going to chill out. I've got a sort of a garage
- 1:00:01renovation to do so. I'm trying to put a gym in a
- 1:00:04garage, so I have to clean that out because the mornings and the
- 1:00:09evenings are getting dark here. So I'll try to put a treadmill,
- 1:00:13put a treadmill in there. So so it's made for winter.
- 1:00:16But yeah, good week. He was just.
- 1:00:19Telling me about his budget for this treadmill Before we before
- 1:00:21you got on, Dean. Wait, actually, Dean?
- 1:00:24What would you spend on a treadmill if you're going to use
- 1:00:26it like every day, nearly twice a day for the next like 6
- 1:00:29months? If you're in my situation.
- 1:00:32What's it? I think you'd struggle to get
- 1:00:34anything under a couple of €1000, wouldn't you?
- 1:00:36I was thinking 4. Yeah.
- 1:00:39Actually, that would be probably what what it would cost because
- 1:00:42you nearly need. Like one of them commercial ones
- 1:00:44that can go pretty fast. I ended up getting one that.
- 1:00:47Was like an old gym, like it was from a hotel that had been
- 1:00:51refurbed, but it was like one of the from its day, you know, one
- 1:00:56that can and go, you know well north of 20 KS an hour and
- 1:01:00that's what you want. They're hard to.
- 1:01:01Find like you know, you want one that can go 25 like just to be
- 1:01:05able to like do strides on it and I'll but yeah, like Jim like
- 1:01:09a closed down gym might be selling 1.
- 1:01:11So I'll just keep an eye out on that or if anyone from Ireland
- 1:01:14is listening knows anyone selling a pretty decent
- 1:01:16treadmill, hit me up or if you're.
- 1:01:19Based worldwide. Then you'll be able to ship it
- 1:01:21to him for less than his budget. Still get in touch.
- 1:01:26Yeah, we greatly appreciate. It maybe the.
- 1:01:29Customs and import taxes on a treadmill might be severely high
- 1:01:33though. Yeah, especially.
- 1:01:34That's it coming from the UK has messed up so much.
- 1:01:38Like I was looking January man, Ben is running, he released
- 1:01:41socks there with a brand called Shoe and I was trying to like
- 1:01:45get a pair of socks right. So the socks are like €22 but
- 1:01:50then the shipping from England is like €17.00, which is it's
- 1:01:54like you'd nearly pay a flight for £17.00 to go over, get them
- 1:02:00off and personally and fly back over for that price.
- 1:02:03You know there's. There's a listener, junkyard dog
- 1:02:06Corey. He's like, I don't know what his
- 1:02:08role is, but he's involved with them, like the owners, his mates
- 1:02:12and he's maybe like random ambassador type.
- 1:02:14They've started, signed a few athletes.
- 1:02:16Have you seen this? Yeah, but I don't feel like
- 1:02:18racing for them. Yeah, but he.
- 1:02:21He might be able. To sort it out with some
- 1:02:23shipping or something, at least if he's listening.
- 1:02:26So I was going to mention him before, you know, when you said
- 1:02:29about your camping chair in the car?
- 1:02:31Yeah, I. Would roam with him in.
- 1:02:33Melbourne and he had like one of these big old youths and he used
- 1:02:36to have all sorts in the back of it, like he had the frisbee and
- 1:02:39everything. So like whilst people are doing
- 1:02:41the shoes first, he's like got this frisbee out and he's got a
- 1:02:44fussy in there and he's got a roll of Astroturf.
- 1:02:49So he gets this roll out. You know, if we're like in like
- 1:02:51a gravel car park and it's wet, he's got roll of Astroturf.
- 1:02:55So if he's like lying down doing the stretches, he's on that.
- 1:02:59And in. Albert Park, he's you go around
- 1:03:02Albert Park once and he gets like 10 shouts like yeah,
- 1:03:05junkyard, junkyard. He's like infamous and just on.
- 1:03:10Them shoe socks I got them I got a three pair of white ones and a
- 1:03:14three pair of black ones. I'm going to say two years ago
- 1:03:17and they're still going today. Not one hole in them, which is
- 1:03:20it's crazy. They're they're like legit and
- 1:03:23they match all the shoes, which is nice.
- 1:03:26The guy who. Owns it.
- 1:03:27He's English but now lives in Australia I think.
- 1:03:31Yeah, no. Good.
- 1:03:32All right then. Oh, actually did want to say as
- 1:03:34well. Whilst we were on the training,
- 1:03:37I got into a couple of races on the bike this week.
- 1:03:39I don't know if the other guys knew that we were racing, but I
- 1:03:42thought that we were It's it's the first time that like I've
- 1:03:50experienced this whilst being on the bike.
- 1:03:52So like 1 fella passed me, I thought I'm gone.
- 1:03:57So I like got on his wheel and then I don't think he really
- 1:04:00like when he realized I was doing it, he wasn't like kind of
- 1:04:03interested. So like he just slowed down and
- 1:04:06let me go past. But then there's another two
- 1:04:08occasions where I went past people and they jumped on my
- 1:04:13wheel. So I was like shit there we go.
- 1:04:16And I was trying this group of like 3 fellas.
- 1:04:20They were all in like the lycra and stuff and clearly like
- 1:04:23better cyclists than I but I was trying so hard to drop them for
- 1:04:28like 5 KS. Looked at my heart rate
- 1:04:30afterwards, had my heart rate heart rate thing on.
- 1:04:33I hit 174 which is like way above threshold for me.
- 1:04:38I couldn't get rid of them. Come here.
- 1:04:41How many hours? Are you doing on the bike?
- 1:04:44Maybe maybe 90 minutes a day average, something like that.
- 1:04:50Do you know? Actually Caleb Blacker, if he's
- 1:04:54been doing like 2 1/2 hours, 3 hours, No guys, he does
- 1:04:58literally like nearly six hours a day cross training crazy shit.
- 1:05:03I don't know what his. Injuries, but like fair play,
- 1:05:05like, you know, some kind of mental training that.
- 1:05:08Is like I've just found. It enough to like kind of take
- 1:05:14over get some of those like shit.
- 1:05:17What's the chemical that releases that makes you feel
- 1:05:19good after exercise? Endorphin.
- 1:05:21Yeah, some of those. Endorphins, but besides that
- 1:05:24it's more like a tick box to just sweat.
- 1:05:26I couldn't be on there for like hours and hours.
- 1:05:28But he'll he'll obviously feel the benefits when it comes back
- 1:05:32to running. Are you still getting that
- 1:05:33treatment thing? Well, I.
- 1:05:35Stopped because the doctor said, oh, you've stopped feeling like
- 1:05:39the pain now. So this is like where we like
- 1:05:41ease off it. But then when I stopped the
- 1:05:44pains come back on. So I've booked them for another
- 1:05:47MRI to see where we're at. Refs tell tell me I need to stop
- 1:05:52being so anxious and jumping from practitioner to
- 1:05:56practitioner and like seeking answers.
- 1:05:59Just give it time and let it do its thing and shift your focus
- 1:06:03into other things and it'll come to you.
- 1:06:06So it's very rough explanation, but it actually sounds very
- 1:06:10logical and I do need to do that.
- 1:06:13That's, yes, the worst thing. Because like especially even
- 1:06:15when you come back from injury, you're like waiting for the pain
- 1:06:18to come and like sometimes it's literally just in your head as
- 1:06:22well. Not saying it's in your head,
- 1:06:23but it's near. The psychological battle is like
- 1:06:26nearly worse then actually the healing of the injury.
- 1:06:29So if I get. This scan now and see that
- 1:06:31either the plantar isn't inflamed or the stressy seems to
- 1:06:36have like gone away and it's just the plantar.
- 1:06:38I just want to see like one of the two has healed and I can
- 1:06:42deal with that. There's some progress.
- 1:06:46But yeah, anyway, we'll I'll update you after the scan.
- 1:06:52Otherwise, lean into the pro cyclist life because you have my
- 1:06:56budget for a bike. I'd have to be similar to your
- 1:06:58budget for a treadmill thing. Get one.
- 1:07:01Off Tommy Cross. He's got a few good bikes there.
- 1:07:05Well, see, I'm learning. All these things all about frame
- 1:07:08size, so I need the big capacity frame.
- 1:07:10Size, it's crazy. Some of them bikes have like
- 1:07:15touch gears that you like touch them and like it's like, yeah,
- 1:07:19you touch it and it changes gears instead of physically like
- 1:07:22flicking the switch like it's just touched.
- 1:07:23They're so high tech now, like an F1 star.
- 1:07:26Yeah, this is the other thing. Right up until today, I hadn't
- 1:07:30changed the gear once because I didn't know how to I have to ask
- 1:07:35RAF to show me so because it's got those drop bars, you know
- 1:07:39like the arrow bars where you go down onto your forearms.
- 1:07:42So this I thought the gears are usually on the brake and like
- 1:07:46you push them inwards rather than pull them towards you
- 1:07:50because got these arrow bars. It's like this mad crank on the
- 1:07:53end of it and you have to really like give it some.
- 1:07:57So I'd literally haven't changed the gear once until today.
- 1:08:01It's like you've levelled up. Quads of steel.
- 1:08:03Now right then moving on, we've got some news items to cover.
- 1:08:12So then if you've seen this Jacobs PR guy was delivering a
- 1:08:18press release this week saying that he'll be out of the diamond
- 1:08:22leagues ahead of Worlds. And his first race will be the
- 1:08:25heats of the 1500 meters, Which considering he only like
- 1:08:30confirmed his participation in one of them as recent as like 10
- 1:08:36days ago or a week ago. So he's clearly had some sort of
- 1:08:39set back since then and now, which isn't great for him, great
- 1:08:44for the others. Just see he's.
- 1:08:45Wearing these really old Nike shoes on his training sessions.
- 1:08:49No like like the original. 4% is.
- 1:08:52Yeah, they're the best. Like it's crazy.
- 1:08:54He's wearing a beat. Up pair and they wouldn't just
- 1:08:56give him a new I don't know. I'm hoping they break release
- 1:08:59the Alphafa ones we all. Are they're obviously.
- 1:09:06They're obviously doing it deliberately, like they know the
- 1:09:08demand is there and they're just keeping hold of this custom in
- 1:09:11demand, aren't they? And maybe one day we'll get it
- 1:09:15like all them. Other shoe brands are like
- 1:09:16catching up and even passing them out like they'd want to do
- 1:09:20something. Yeah, I guess it's still, it's a
- 1:09:22bit like accepting defeat or swallowing the pride if they go
- 1:09:25back to the original model, isn't it?
- 1:09:27They kind of want to re release the A1 but have like new
- 1:09:31advancements on it. That's a little train.
- 1:09:33To like all this air bubble is bigger or some shit like that
- 1:09:36just to make it like it's the same shoe but just a tiny
- 1:09:39difference. Yeah, we'll all happily.
- 1:09:42Accept it, whichever. Whatever it is, change the
- 1:09:46upper. And then give us the shoe bag.
- 1:09:48Just more grippy. Laces.
- 1:09:50Yeah, yeah, on that. It's good for the goose because
- 1:09:56he's going to be trying to win that Diamond League final, isn't
- 1:09:58he? So Jacob's out.
- 1:10:00Yeah. And is is that?
- 1:10:01How it works, like you actually have to win it.
- 1:10:03Like let's say someone's already qualified and they win it.
- 1:10:07That's a good point to. Actually, like, is it the next
- 1:10:09best? I don't know.
- 1:10:10Or then does if he doesn't win it and someone else does, does
- 1:10:13the place just not get allocated?
- 1:10:15I don't know. Yeah, I don't know.
- 1:10:16Next. Item.
- 1:10:18Go on. Sorry, you go.
- 1:10:19No, Yeah, and the same. For like with roll down like
- 1:10:21does that open up another spot? I don't know I doubt it.
- 1:10:24But anyway, I'm sure we'll learn as it happens I.
- 1:10:27Think the Goose has got entries into the Diamond Leagues leading
- 1:10:31up to the finals? To the finals in Shorik only.
- 1:10:34It's only about two or three weeks before nationals, but
- 1:10:39there's CL, Sir, I think next weekend, and then Lausanne,
- 1:10:44maybe even of one as well. But Negusi hasn't even got
- 1:10:47points to make the final as it stands, so he's going to have to
- 1:10:49race on these other ones to get himself an entry and then try
- 1:10:53and bloody win the thing. You'd imagine even if he does
- 1:10:56get to Tokyo, he's going to have compromised A slight edge of his
- 1:11:00competitiveness in doing all this, isn't he?
- 1:11:02Yeah. And you wonder like.
- 1:11:04Some of the guys that did all that Grand Slam stuff, maybe
- 1:11:06they're regretting it, particularly when they haven't
- 1:11:08been paid. Yeah, I know we talk a lot about
- 1:11:11Fisher and him winning those two early rounds, but I think that
- 1:11:16Kenny Bednarak, he won all three.
- 1:11:18So he's owed 300 grand. But saying that I.
- 1:11:22Think it does take a while for all them mates like to pay their
- 1:11:27athletes. Yeah, they passed.
- 1:11:28Past the point, though. Oh yeah.
- 1:11:31Yeah, Grant Fisher, I think, went on.
- 1:11:33He spoke ahead of the US track and field champs, didn't he,
- 1:11:37about it. And he was pretty transparent
- 1:11:39about basically sort of said that he was the 31st of July was
- 1:11:43the last date for which they were meant to be paid for one of
- 1:11:46the mates. And as far as he was aware, no
- 1:11:48one had been paid. And then I think that date
- 1:11:51passed and they still hadn't been paid.
- 1:11:53So I didn't know. Yeah, Fell foul of their
- 1:11:56obligations in terms of when they said they were people
- 1:11:59you'd. Imagine, like, I think he said
- 1:12:02something along the lines of a lot of people aren't going to be
- 1:12:04happy or something. So you'd imagine maybe the
- 1:12:07athletes might get together and like, as, yeah, some sort of
- 1:12:10classical yeah. That'll just ruin them.
- 1:12:13Won't it? Regardless of whether they've
- 1:12:15got the money for next year or not?
- 1:12:16Like getting taken to court by the athletes.
- 1:12:19Let's be real, it's already. Ruined.
- 1:12:21Like, who the Hell's going to go there next year?
- 1:12:23Yeah, I think it's JJ. It's over next.
- 1:12:26Item use may may not have seen this on XI know we're big fans
- 1:12:31of Steve Magnus. So he put a bit of a story on
- 1:12:35there the other week where I don't know if he was there in
- 1:12:39Kenya at the time. But anyway, in Kenya, anti dopin
- 1:12:42arrived at a track and he used to test all the athletes there,
- 1:12:47like just turned up unannounced and they said it was like a
- 1:12:50school playground. They're like if the teacher
- 1:12:53blows the whistle and says like breaks over, all these athletes
- 1:12:57are just spreading running here, there and everywhere.
- 1:13:02No, in Kenya. Oh, Kenya.
- 1:13:07I just get so sad every time I hear about this even.
- 1:13:10You should just follow Jimmy Grezier on Instagram.
- 1:13:13No, he. Always posts.
- 1:13:14When Kenyon gets popped and I think a pretty legit one got
- 1:13:19popped there during the week, I'll look for it now I was
- 1:13:23thinking. About it the other day on the
- 1:13:25back of all the recent stuff, like if you get done, regardless
- 1:13:30of whether like when it was, you should have to give you prize
- 1:13:34money back. And if you don't, should be like
- 1:13:37criminal charges, the fraud or something because essentially
- 1:13:39that's like the act that you commit.
- 1:13:41And isn't it that, well, I don't know, by definition, but that's
- 1:13:44how it's how it seems. It's scandalous that they get to
- 1:13:47keep the prize money. I don't get it.
- 1:13:49So I'm. Just looking up this woman's
- 1:13:53well legs profile, Judy Gallagher, GE I'm not even going
- 1:14:01to try and pronounce that. Yeah, the AIU.
- 1:14:04On Twitter or X as well they're they tweet every time someone
- 1:14:07gets done with the with the drug and I've seen someone in the
- 1:14:11week got done with that. The What's it called?
- 1:14:14The dialect? The hell The thing that Chapman
- 1:14:18gets itch was found with hydrochloride.
- 1:14:23Yeah, so this one, yeah. So she's run 6634 half marathon
- 1:14:28and she her current ranking is seventh woman's road running.
- 1:14:32So like she's pretty. She's pretty good when she run
- 1:14:35the half marathon the 1st of February this year in oh, that's
- 1:14:39that one in Dubai that Raz Al Kami.
- 1:14:45But yeah, again, it's just so sad.
- 1:14:48First comment on Twitter. Is this a fight against the best
- 1:14:51performing country? This is so racist to Africans.
- 1:14:55Why Kenya? A little bit.
- 1:15:00Tangential to doping? Did you listen to the Matt Fox
- 1:15:08podcast? You have you guys tuned in?
- 1:15:10I did. I did.
- 1:15:11Him and the Irish guy, they're back.
- 1:15:13Yeah, yeah. Yeah, yeah, good to be back in
- 1:15:16our years. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:15:17I don't know if you guys had any thoughts or reflections, but
- 1:15:21like pretty do you do you ever watch this series of like banged
- 1:15:24up abroad? Do you ever guys have a see
- 1:15:28you're not comparing? It to that, are we?
- 1:15:30Well, it's sort of. Like it sort of took.
- 1:15:32Me back to like those stories where you sort of like, but
- 1:15:36something that that feels like a bit more relatable to like
- 1:15:39someone just going in country and sort of, you know, a bit
- 1:15:43unaware of maybe the ramifications of doing something
- 1:15:46in in another country. Like, it was pretty, pretty
- 1:15:49wild, crazy story. Yeah.
- 1:15:51I think it would just been. So scary, like in the airport,
- 1:15:55scan the passport and then boom. Like we'll probably let the
- 1:15:58listeners listen to it as well. But yeah, yeah, like, yeah.
- 1:16:01To be honest, it seems like he he was treated reasonably OK.
- 1:16:06It was just like a 4 1/2 months in a in a room like yeah, I
- 1:16:11would go. Like 40 minutes without my
- 1:16:14phone. I reckon I'd start to wig out
- 1:16:17how you go four months. Sure he write, he read by.
- 1:16:20Yourself. You.
- 1:16:21Read like 30 odd books 30. Two books, yeah.
- 1:16:24Like I just, yeah, just with just your thoughts and like no
- 1:16:28ability to like connect with anyone.
- 1:16:30I don't know. I particularly now we're the
- 1:16:34giving way more connected than ever.
- 1:16:35Like we're sitting here, you know, connected to this,
- 1:16:39connected to our phones. Like, I don't know, it'd be very
- 1:16:42hard. It was kind of a good.
- 1:16:44Format the way that that Luke essentially interviewed him
- 1:16:47didn't Ian like was was directing it all and was in
- 1:16:49control of what was being asked and stuff obviously they'd spoke
- 1:16:52offline about how it would go but I felt like he'd done a good
- 1:16:55job in like making sure the picture was like painted
- 1:16:58thoroughly yeah went back through the.
- 1:17:00Details. I mean, you could still ask so
- 1:17:02many questions, couldn't you? Like there was some like the
- 1:17:05whole experience is just extraordinary.
- 1:17:08But yeah, him being a lawyer I think allowed for him to sort of
- 1:17:11walk through some of the the concepts and ask, yeah, ask some
- 1:17:15very good questions. But yeah, wild by the sands of
- 1:17:18it, he's. Going to be in Australia for a
- 1:17:20little bit of time, so maybe you could meet up and go for a run
- 1:17:24together. Yeah, we'll probably be at some.
- 1:17:26Races soon hopefully be interesting to.
- 1:17:31Follow his training and see like how quickly or slowly it comes
- 1:17:33back and stuff like that he'll. When is Sydney?
- 1:17:37No, Sydney's like 4. Weeks or no three weeks, Yeah,
- 1:17:40that might be too much, but. No, he'll get fit so quick.
- 1:17:42I'd say by Ballarat next year he'll be flying, I was going to
- 1:17:47say. Fukuoka in December, but I
- 1:17:50imagine he might have difficulty getting back in.
- 1:17:52To be fair. I wonder is he like?
- 1:17:54Banned. No.
- 1:17:55He's also not banned from the country, is he?
- 1:17:56I don't know like. Does he have a criminal?
- 1:17:58Record like, oh, did he plead guilty?
- 1:18:00He did plead guilty, yeah. So it will.
- 1:18:04It will. Apply in Japan but not
- 1:18:06internationally. Yeah, I just.
- 1:18:09Like he done the wrong thing, but you do.
- 1:18:11And I feel sorry for him. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:18:15Sort of not. You're not looking to cause harm
- 1:18:17to anyone, you know, like, yeah. And the fact that it's legal.
- 1:18:20In so many countries as well, like it's, yeah, it's.
- 1:18:23Unfortunate but. That's life, say Lovey.
- 1:18:27I think that means such is life. Another thing I've seen, Adidas
- 1:18:33released this new Prime X3, which is the shoe with the
- 1:18:37illegal stack height, and I wanted to ask you both, without
- 1:18:40leading you one way or the other, would you race in that?
- 1:18:44No it wouldn't. Count.
- 1:18:46Yeah, I know what you're saying. Like you're running a mass
- 1:18:48participation race and no one would really know.
- 1:18:50But like, unless I thought that there was a real chance of like
- 1:18:55risk of like injury prevention, like I can sort of understand
- 1:18:59someone, let's say doing a track race and running in racing flats
- 1:19:02rather than spikes for for 10K or something like that.
- 1:19:05Like I can get their head around why they'd do that because then
- 1:19:09it allows them to participate in a race and get up and train the
- 1:19:12next day. But yeah, probably not.
- 1:19:14Is it not the same as? Doping.
- 1:19:16It's illegal. Not quite.
- 1:19:21I mean, you're more. Transparent, I suppose, when
- 1:19:23you're walking out in stilts. Yeah, but them shoes?
- 1:19:26There's 50 mil stack, so on the heel it's 50 mil and it drops to
- 1:19:3043 in the forefoot and it's got a carbon plate and Adidas's
- 1:19:36energy rods. So it's like double S.
- 1:19:39It's got like 3 different layers of foam.
- 1:19:40It's it's a crazy, crazy shoe. I love to go.
- 1:19:45Yeah, but it's expensive as well.
- 1:19:47Well, I've seen. Them in the Adidas in the the
- 1:19:51DFO here like last time I was there and they were only like
- 1:19:54200 and something and I was intrigued just to like training
- 1:19:57them. I would I wouldn't race in them
- 1:19:59myself either. And the seeing this this Asian
- 1:20:02guy trying them on and I was so, so tempted to say to him, by the
- 1:20:06way, you know, they're like illegal if you're going to race
- 1:20:09for a thought, No, it'll ruin his day, but the likes so.
- 1:20:12Let's say from my run this morning, like I would have
- 1:20:15pulled up so, so, so much better if I wore a pair of them
- 1:20:19compared to like the shoes I wore.
- 1:20:21And so there is, I feel like there is a space like place for
- 1:20:24them in a rotation, but I just personally wouldn't wear them.
- 1:20:28Yeah, it's kind of that middle. Ground like you wouldn't want to
- 1:20:30rely on them for sessions where like you see in splits and
- 1:20:33thinking, oh, I can do this, I can do that.
- 1:20:36But for those like steady runs where you've got tired legs,
- 1:20:39they'd probably serve like a decent purpose.
- 1:20:42Like I'd be 6 foot. In them.
- 1:20:45It's crazy the other week. There was a a new world record
- 1:20:49be a mile. I don't.
- 1:20:51Have you ever participated in one of these the.
- 1:20:54My bucks party started the groomsmen, Doug grabbed me from
- 1:20:59my house and we ended up starting with AI brace them in a
- 1:21:02BMR. Where was that?
- 1:21:06Oh, this is. 2015, it was 10 years ago now, yeah.
- 1:21:11But yeah, it was a disaster. I think I threw up pretty early,
- 1:21:15so I was just trying to push too hard, I think, on the beer.
- 1:21:19Or on the forum. Both really.
- 1:21:22But no, I think, yeah, I think it was like warm emu export and
- 1:21:25it was just finding as I was trying to guzzle it, but I
- 1:21:30reckon I bait. Them.
- 1:21:31Yeah, I think I've seen a video of.
- 1:21:32This kid doing it and he's chugging them and he's, he's the
- 1:21:37flyer, yeah. Have you seen I've put the?
- 1:21:40Splits in the show notes he's been with 5 to 9 seconds, 9
- 1:21:45seconds at the slowest, and he's running 6 seconds.
- 1:21:48And they see, they sort of turn them as it goes down the gullet.
- 1:21:51So it just goes down as like some sort of like tornado.
- 1:21:54Venturi type. Yeah, yeah, the perfect vector
- 1:21:58as it sort of slides down his gullet and then in one fell
- 1:22:01swoop and then off he goes. Like he's running the equivalent
- 1:22:04of like a 4 minute mile in between like a couple of gulps
- 1:22:06of liquid may imagine you went. Back in time and told who were
- 1:22:11the guys? John Landy.
- 1:22:13Who were the guys were in pursuit of the Four Minute Mile?
- 1:22:17Yeah, Bannister. Yeah, he.
- 1:22:20Told them that awesome ones running this mile now
- 1:22:22essentially in the drinking a beer after each laugh.
- 1:22:27I've just googled him to see where he's from.
- 1:22:29Corey Bellmore and somewhere in America back in the day, I
- 1:22:35think. Josh Harris, Yeah.
- 1:22:37Do you remember, have you heard the name Josh Harris?
- 1:22:40So he represented Australia in the 2017 world champs for the
- 1:22:44marathon. I think it's run like 217.
- 1:22:46He I think maybe had the world record at one point in time,
- 1:22:50like back when it was more closer to like 5 minutes.
- 1:22:53The fact that it's now 427 is ridiculous.
- 1:22:57So this next one, this is pretty touch and go rarely depending on
- 1:23:00how you look at it. So I think it's important that
- 1:23:04we acknowledge that those of the story came out like last week or
- 1:23:07the week before about female athletes now having to get a
- 1:23:12chromosome or DNA test to see if they possess AY chromosome to
- 1:23:18essentially make women's sport fair and ensure that it's only
- 1:23:23females competing in female sport.
- 1:23:27Now why it's quite on the fence or a bit touch and go is because
- 1:23:34I struggled to explain this. Essentially, some women can test
- 1:23:37positive for having this Y chromosome and therefore be
- 1:23:41unfairly excluded from competing in the sport when they've done
- 1:23:44nothing wrong. Obviously the chances of that
- 1:23:47happening is few and far between and the science of it I don't
- 1:23:50really understand, but I get where they're coming from.
- 1:23:53I think the the general principle in trying to like
- 1:23:56remove trans athletes essentially formerly males from
- 1:24:02competing in female only events is a fair a fairpoint to come
- 1:24:08from. But yeah, maybe they might cause
- 1:24:11some problems for themselves if like these niche scenarios
- 1:24:15arise. So think it might have happened
- 1:24:18once back in the day. Do you remember in?
- 1:24:20The Olympics, an Irish, there was an Italian boxer and Trump,
- 1:24:26she was fighting an Irish girl, but they said she was a man or
- 1:24:33something. I don't know why I started this
- 1:24:35because I really don't know about it.
- 1:24:36But like, Donald Trump came out and was like, he was born a man.
- 1:24:42And like, I think she just had really high levels of
- 1:24:45testosterone or something like that.
- 1:24:47But like, it was a girl and like, her name sort of got
- 1:24:51dragged through the dirt for like, nothing.
- 1:24:54Like she couldn't do anything about it, which is, yeah, it's
- 1:24:57not nice. Yeah.
- 1:24:59So that's the thing. They put like a threshold on the
- 1:25:01levels of testosterone that you can have, but some theme, actual
- 1:25:04legit females can just naturally have high levels of it and would
- 1:25:08therefore be like ruled out. Yeah, I think it's really I.
- 1:25:12Don't know, difficult because I think sport is all about trying
- 1:25:15to create fairness and allowing everyone to participate and by
- 1:25:20doing this discriminates against some people who through no
- 1:25:25choice of their own are born a certain way and then may not fit
- 1:25:30within this criteria yet would otherwise be allowed to compete
- 1:25:36as females. So, yeah, I think like the cast
- 1:25:39as some in your example, I think it's one of those.
- 1:25:42And I think she's had to do other in the past, right, in
- 1:25:44terms of like lowering her testosterone levels to be
- 1:25:47allowed to participate and those sorts of things.
- 1:25:49And she's sort of not done anything to change who she is.
- 1:25:54And it's these rules that are sort of imposing that upon her,
- 1:25:57which isn't really fair and goes against what it's trying to do,
- 1:26:01which is create a fair playing field.
- 1:26:04I don't know. I think it's really hard to,
- 1:26:06yeah. But let's be real, there's way
- 1:26:09bigger problems out there. Like, they just need someone
- 1:26:12sitting at every track in Kenya and Ethiopia and using, like,
- 1:26:15just testing them. Because whatever's happening
- 1:26:18over there is far worse than testing some white chromosome
- 1:26:23shit. Sure.
- 1:26:24Yeah, yeah. General principle, encourage
- 1:26:27participation, discourage doping.
- 1:26:29I think that's what we like. Wonder if they've got any any
- 1:26:34vacant spaces on any of these athletic sports.
- 1:26:37Shake them up. I don't think we'll be getting
- 1:26:40less spaces. We'll.
- 1:26:42Put our one on. It wouldn't get fair.
- 1:26:47All right then, boys, listen to questions.
- 1:26:51We've had a few. So Tom Tedge asks thoughts on
- 1:26:56Gofundmes for international marathons?
- 1:26:59I don't know if there's any context behind this, but I mean
- 1:27:03in general, I think like if you're doing an international
- 1:27:07marathon, you might be fundraising for charity and
- 1:27:09stuff. So potentially you, I don't
- 1:27:11know, you might use the go Fund Me to help you with your
- 1:27:14charity, but I think that's a little bit lazy.
- 1:27:16Like you should do a cake sale or do your bloody bonus ball in
- 1:27:20the lottery before going to Go Fund me for your funds.
- 1:27:24I might start. A go fund me to buy myself a new
- 1:27:27car if anyone wants that. Or treadmill if this if there's
- 1:27:31the shit that's going on now my *1 Someone to help me out get
- 1:27:37the. Get the into Valencia my
- 1:27:39personal opinion on. Gofundmes is there for people in
- 1:27:41need that are like, struggling or have had a bad thing happen
- 1:27:45to them. And there's much more important
- 1:27:47things than for raising money for someone to run an
- 1:27:51international marathon. Like just save it for another
- 1:27:54year or two and then do the marathon.
- 1:27:55Like there's much more important things out there, yeah.
- 1:27:59It was interesting, right, because I sort of looked at like
- 1:28:01some some of the sites and there's opportunities for people
- 1:28:05who would like like clubs have like their sporting clubs
- 1:28:07raising money for like building facilities or like kids going to
- 1:28:12like junior national championships or European
- 1:28:14Championships or the like. So like a platform, because I do
- 1:28:19think like running is a bit doesn't have a lot of funding,
- 1:28:22right. So it's sort of like if, if
- 1:28:24there's if there's and there's people that are quite well to do
- 1:28:28that might want to support like, like athletes don't really have
- 1:28:31a lot of money typically, right? The sport's fairly lacking when
- 1:28:35it comes to sort of athlete funding in particular.
- 1:28:38So if there was some sort of medium that sort of allowed for
- 1:28:41that, it just like you say, it's probably just making it clear
- 1:28:44between what the different channels for funding, you know,
- 1:28:48charitable funding and those sorts of those causes versus
- 1:28:51maybe startups, you know, in terms of crowdfunding and then
- 1:28:55maybe some athlete funding. Like, I don't know, I'm sort of
- 1:28:58not opposed to the idea of people getting supported to help
- 1:29:01chase their dreams, particularly in something like running that's
- 1:29:04doesn't get much money, you know, we're not in it for.
- 1:29:06The money, let's be real. Or.
- 1:29:10You don't get much money for. Winning.
- 1:29:11That's right, Those those. UK athletes, When was it like
- 1:29:15sometime this year who had to pay £1000 to get themselves,
- 1:29:20Yeah, European champs or whatever they could have done
- 1:29:23with the Go Fund Me, I was thinking that.
- 1:29:25Like, yeah, like if there was some sort of, you know, well,
- 1:29:29that's not right. And I'm sure there'd be people
- 1:29:30out there that would be prepared to help save them, you know, get
- 1:29:34there if you've if. You've got a link.
- 1:29:37Send it over and we'll we might not share it, to be fair.
- 1:29:42Josh, Josh Tie. I don't know why he asked these
- 1:29:45stupid questions. I'll be.
- 1:29:48Transparent anyway, and read it out.
- 1:29:49Do you think Miley Cyrus paved the way for artists like Sabrina
- 1:29:52Carpenter? I think this is actually a
- 1:29:55really. Good question.
- 1:29:56And I think Miley Cyrus is sort of a role model for all these
- 1:30:01young and upcoming artists. So I think Sabrina Carpenter
- 1:30:07would really like look up to a person like Miley.
- 1:30:11And I hear she's doing what? Who's the other Hannah Montana
- 1:30:15tour? I think she's doing a Hannah
- 1:30:16Montana tour. So maybe Josh might be looking
- 1:30:19to get tickets to that. You never know, to be fair,
- 1:30:22Hannah. Montana was a guilty pleasure of
- 1:30:24mine back in the in the day. Year 5 maybe.
- 1:30:27Year 4 let's you still. Watch it.
- 1:30:31Yeah, yeah. Yeah, yeah, 13, No, But whilst
- 1:30:37we're on it, Miley Cyrus, she's got a cover of Like a Prayer by
- 1:30:42Madonna and it's, it's insane. It could be an outro.
- 1:30:47Yeah. Well, I was looking into this
- 1:30:49and you have to pay like you legally you can't use these like
- 1:30:53actual songs because I was thinking we could get a sick
- 1:30:56song. But I mean, I don't know if or
- 1:31:00the podcasts who do it, if they're actually like they have
- 1:31:02the licenses and they follow the rules.
- 1:31:04But I know it'd be a shame to get easy double.
- 1:31:06Just delete it because we put like a prayer could be worth it.
- 1:31:13Going out with a bang. Nick Boland asks for marathon
- 1:31:18sessions. Do you prefer to include them in
- 1:31:20a long run or separately as their own thing on a Thursday
- 1:31:23and Friday session? I know for us like.
- 1:31:25We've typically sort of replace them, like replace the long run.
- 1:31:30So like we would normally do your regular Tuesday, Thursday
- 1:31:35workouts and then instead of saying Sunday's a long run,
- 1:31:38Saturday's a tempo workout, but instead just do something very
- 1:31:42like long and specific on the Saturday instead.
- 1:31:45And it might incorporate time jogging or we sort of call it
- 1:31:49like steady pace into like marathon specific work.
- 1:31:54But it's sort of and some people run their long runs a bit
- 1:31:57steadier. This is sort of all pretty
- 1:31:59deliberate. So it's sort of not, it's not in
- 1:32:02the set, It's not like it's not really either of those.
- 1:32:05It's not a, it's not a Friday longer session and it's not time
- 1:32:10at or around marathon effort at the back end of a long run.
- 1:32:13It's sort of it's its own own thing really.
- 1:32:16Normally I like the I'm. Still figuring it out, to be
- 1:32:19fair, but so far I like the kind of like week on, week off where
- 1:32:22you do individual marathon session one week, maybe on the
- 1:32:27set Friday, Saturday, whatever it might be, and then just like
- 1:32:30easy time on feet on the Sunday and then the next week have a
- 1:32:34specific long run with maybe some intensity in it on the
- 1:32:37Sunday. Yeah, yeah, it's.
- 1:32:39Sensible. I've never done a.
- 1:32:41Marathon session. Big wait this week.
- 1:32:44Just go on there, yeah. It's 12th and 5000 meter
- 1:32:50national championships. Doesn't need to be doing
- 1:32:52marathon sessions. See.
- 1:32:55Only. 12 though next year top 10.
- 1:32:59Cross country could you come top top ten the cross country yeah,
- 1:33:03cross country is so. Stacked in Ireland, if I got
- 1:33:05like top, I don't think I've ever finished in the top 50s
- 1:33:09unless we're counting when I was like 13.
- 1:33:13So yeah, if I even got like Top 40 or something, I'd be I'll be
- 1:33:18pretty chuffed. John Donnelly asks.
- 1:33:21I don't know if this is a loaded question.
- 1:33:23He's giggling behind his firm whilst he puts this in.
- 1:33:26Big biggest, biggest snake in Perth?
- 1:33:32We have some large non venomous snakes and they're and they're
- 1:33:38up north. But in Perth there's plenty of
- 1:33:40poisonous snakes I'm sure. But I'm just literally talking
- 1:33:45about we. You should have taken Jordan
- 1:33:47when he was in Perth around like like herdsmen, like I think it
- 1:33:52has like 1 of the largest populations of venomous snakes,
- 1:33:56dense like densest populations of venomous snakes in, like in
- 1:33:59inner city in, in the world or something.
- 1:34:01So we punch above, above our average in terms of venomous
- 1:34:05snakes, but they're genuinely like they're snakes.
- 1:34:08They're a. Reptilian.
- 1:34:09Car. Yeah, my time.
- 1:34:11In Australia like Perth is probably the only place I
- 1:34:13actually didn't see a snake like and it wasn't like you weren't
- 1:34:16here. In summer, yeah.
- 1:34:17So it's. Weird.
- 1:34:19Oh, probably. Like normally you hear it like
- 1:34:21Russell in the in the in the like shrubs are like in the
- 1:34:26hedges. So you actually don't see it,
- 1:34:28but like you hear something. But like I remember when I was
- 1:34:31in Brisbane, I seen a full on like Python like crossing the
- 1:34:34street crossing like a little footpath and all the Australians
- 1:34:38like, Oh crikey, what a beauty. And then I seen like a few brown
- 1:34:44ones. Yeah, I've seen a few brown ones
- 1:34:47and like a black one with a red belly.
- 1:34:50But I was beside like a sort of a wetlands area.
- 1:34:54So I'd say they'd probably they'd like that.
- 1:34:57But yeah, I've never seen a snake in breath.
- 1:34:59And interesting. So I was, you know, when I went
- 1:35:02down on that camper van holiday with the family, we went to the
- 1:35:06local reptile park there and I nearly walked away with a with a
- 1:35:10pet Python. Nearly bought 1.
- 1:35:13Were you or the kids? Bit of column A, bit of column
- 1:35:18B, but I, I, you need a license, but apparently you can get it in
- 1:35:24like 2 to three days now. It used to be far more
- 1:35:25regulated, but but yeah, watch, watch this space.
- 1:35:29We're back down South in a couple of months.
- 1:35:32Have you seen the way they feed? You have to feed that like small
- 1:35:34mice. It's horrible.
- 1:35:36So yeah, so I did. Ask.
- 1:35:37We did inquire about that, Yeah. They feed exclusively on on
- 1:35:40mice, Yeah. Oh, was it my cousin had the
- 1:35:44snake? Was it my cousin?
- 1:35:46I don't know. I think it might have been.
- 1:35:48And no, I can't have been. He must have told me the story.
- 1:35:51I've got my alliance mixed up. But anyway, there's a story
- 1:35:54about a guy who had the a snake and it would lie, lie down.
- 1:36:00It would like lay long ways next to him during the night.
- 1:36:04It's to try and work out. If we can eat him, it was sizing
- 1:36:07him. Off as it was growing yeah yeah
- 1:36:08that's what I. Reckon yeah, this one will only
- 1:36:11go a metre long, so it might just be enough to eat the cat.
- 1:36:13Ryan, if you ever needed the cat looked after.
- 1:36:16Oh, we don't. Mention the cat no.
- 1:36:19Becca will kill. You it.
- 1:36:22Depends if you want your life taken from you.
- 1:36:27Gummy bear Hibstickles asks how to keep the heart rate low at
- 1:36:35the start of a race. Probably just not going out.
- 1:36:38Too high? That's probably the only thing
- 1:36:39you can do. That or not check your heart
- 1:36:41rate monitor like you did before Ballarat, Yeah.
- 1:36:44It's probably important to acknowledge that your heart rate
- 1:36:47will be like severely elevated compared to normal.
- 1:36:50Like given that example. We went for a warm up and I
- 1:36:55think you've seen yours as well, didn't you?
- 1:36:57Yeah, mine was the same. And I, so I remember I actually
- 1:36:59did chat to RAF because I did did the Perth 50 KA couple of
- 1:37:03years ago. And like I was very conscious of
- 1:37:05trying to keep it to like just run the whole thing to a
- 1:37:07particular heart rate. But when I started, it was sort
- 1:37:10of a bit higher than what I anticipated it to be.
- 1:37:12And yeah, RAF sort of did put it down to a bit of adrenaline and
- 1:37:16a bit of excitement. And so I mean, if there is
- 1:37:19something you can do to sort of calm your nerves before the race
- 1:37:22to, particularly if it's a longer race, like a bit of a bit
- 1:37:24of that before a shorter race, I don't think it's an issue.
- 1:37:27Like you want to, you want to have that feeling, but over one
- 1:37:29of those longer races, you probably don't want to get too
- 1:37:31carried away too early like that.
- 1:37:33The Gold Coast Marathon speech from what?
- 1:37:38The headaches before that, before that, like that probably
- 1:37:41gets your heart rate a bit higher than probably what you
- 1:37:43want it to be just before you start a marathon.
- 1:37:46But yeah, like you say, probably acknowledge that it's going to
- 1:37:48be a little bit elevated, but then it's just try not to go out
- 1:37:51too hard. I think it's the main thing,
- 1:37:52right? Yeah, I think I'm like.
- 1:37:54Sort of like steady in your breathing as well, like in like
- 1:37:57try and like hold in that like adrenaline.
- 1:37:59I don't know, just try and like calm yourself down is what I
- 1:38:03find. Try like I try and do.
- 1:38:04But again, like I wouldn't even like wear a heart rate monitor
- 1:38:09and like a race, like maybe I don't know, yeah, a marathon, I
- 1:38:14wouldn't know. But because race race is so
- 1:38:17different to like all you train. So even it like it probably will
- 1:38:20be higher because like this is something you've trained for and
- 1:38:22you put so much effort into. So I think like I can train and
- 1:38:26it's you can use it as a training metric, but racing I
- 1:38:30ditch it. Like don't even anything like a
- 1:38:335K wouldn't even wear a watch. 10K maybe but yeah I just
- 1:38:38wouldn't bother wearing the Harry manner being pretty
- 1:38:40honest. Interesting point as.
- 1:38:41Well, I was listening to something, whether you're
- 1:38:43talking about, you know, when you get overly fatigued and you
- 1:38:45can struggle to like raise your heart rate.
- 1:38:48The same applies when you taper and you freshen up, your heart
- 1:38:52rate becomes like so reactive and susceptible.
- 1:38:54So as soon as you like start to jog, it'll rise.
- 1:38:57So it can actually be a sign of like freshness and fitness.
- 1:39:01So maybe like don't be too like carried away by it as well.
- 1:39:04Yeah, exactly like. Like tomorrow morning.
- 1:39:06I'll go for my run and my heart rate could be like high one 20s
- 1:39:10or something like that and I'll be like whoa, I'm really fit.
- 1:39:13But really it's because I'm cooked from the last week.
- 1:39:15So yeah, don't read too much input, which is kind of ironic.
- 1:39:19Because all we do when we talk about our trains, talk about
- 1:39:22heart rate and stuff. But you've got to know when to
- 1:39:24apply it and when to. Maybe not so much.
- 1:39:29James Bond asks 3 questions. So take your pick.
- 1:39:32We could maybe we choose one dream, destination, race and why
- 1:39:38or session you most look forward to.
- 1:39:41For I'll pick the session, I love the first, the morning
- 1:39:45threshold session because it's like that, like that sort of
- 1:39:48comfy, that comfy sort of pace. It's not too hard.
- 1:39:51It's just like controlled. So yeah, that's sort of the
- 1:39:56session like in my weekly structure at the moment, that
- 1:39:58first threshold session is the one I sort of I look forward to
- 1:40:02most in. Terms of sessions, it's probably
- 1:40:06like the race specific sessions. So you know, like when you yeah,
- 1:40:10anything we sort of like 10 days out from a big race or
- 1:40:14thereabouts, we'll do like our final sort of preparatory
- 1:40:16session. So that's the one that I
- 1:40:19probably get the most excited about.
- 1:40:21I sort of, yeah, get fired up for those, which is always good
- 1:40:24because you can send. It and you're chasing pieces.
- 1:40:27Yeah, basically. Sort of the, you know, you're
- 1:40:29going to get a good indication of where your fitness is at.
- 1:40:32You know you're meant to lean into the session rather than
- 1:40:35just tick it off. And I sort of come more
- 1:40:37prepared, arrive on time, do all the things that you're meant to
- 1:40:41do, like a race simulation. So it's get you get pretty
- 1:40:44excited and the sessions are normally fun.
- 1:40:46They're sort of cut up in a way where you're sort of spending
- 1:40:49time at or around race effort just above, just below and but
- 1:40:55it's not a full on whack. So they're they're always my
- 1:40:57favorite workout. I'll take the other 1 then.
- 1:41:01The dream destination race. I think we've answered this on
- 1:41:03one of the early episodes. I can't remember but I'm sure
- 1:41:05someone did ask it and I'm going to say this could change.
- 1:41:11Boston Marathon based on spectating it the past couple of
- 1:41:15years. Like the atmosphere seems
- 1:41:17fucking insane. Like I know that all the majors
- 1:41:19have mental atmospheres but this one just seems next level and
- 1:41:23something about the so it being illegal for records like that
- 1:41:27would be a shame because you're not really running for time, but
- 1:41:31just the whole rolling hills and having to navigate them and deal
- 1:41:35with that challenge just would be unreal.
- 1:41:38I think any of them American. Marathons would be unreal.
- 1:41:41You think I'm going to Boston? Next year, right?
- 1:41:43Yeah, just keep. Pushing back when my return to
- 1:41:46race could be. So Boston's coming into the
- 1:41:48pictures too quickly. When's Boston in April?
- 1:41:53Is it? Oh, that'd be fun.
- 1:41:57I could answer his, actually his third question as well.
- 1:42:00The gear. Oh yeah, yeah, go.
- 1:42:02At the moment I'm having. Umm heart rate monitors, heart
- 1:42:05rate monitors again, hairy monitor issues.
- 1:42:07So I've got the like the cheapest Garmin 1 and it's like
- 1:42:11the Jewel one or whatever but you.
- 1:42:14Need to tell the listeners. What?
- 1:42:15He's asked. Oh, sorry, gear clothing you
- 1:42:20hate poor love. So at the moment, so the battery
- 1:42:23went in it. So I haven't like a year battery
- 1:42:25went on it. So I was like, Oh yeah, change
- 1:42:26the battery. Umm, but ever since I've changed
- 1:42:29the battery, like it's just not ideal and sometimes it chafes,
- 1:42:34sometimes it doesn't. So I'm like, I'm tossing up
- 1:42:37between getting here. Is it being inaccurate?
- 1:42:40Is that what you're finding? So let's say.
- 1:42:43This morning's run, for the first 5-10 minutes, it was like
- 1:42:4664 beats per minute. And then I've done it calibrate
- 1:42:50then I've heard, yeah. No, I think this is a problem.
- 1:42:56Yeah, like I've heard multiple people make comments about once
- 1:42:59you change the batteries there, they turn to shit like that's
- 1:43:02the reason you. Get it?
- 1:43:03Because it lasts long. You can just change the battery
- 1:43:06and all last longer. But I'm just tossing up between
- 1:43:08like there's a new Garmin one out but like it's €160 or going
- 1:43:12to like the Chorus armband. But yeah, I don't know.
- 1:43:16I don't know what to do. The arm bands aren't too.
- 1:43:18Bad for the most part, they're not completely accurate, but
- 1:43:21they're I don't mind in terms of the chafing like I just found I
- 1:43:25got so much chafing like they were just very uncomfortable
- 1:43:28wearing the chest strap. So I moved to one of the I think
- 1:43:31it's the Wahoo arm bands and I've been I've preferred them so
- 1:43:37much like I'll wear them for every run.
- 1:43:39They don't, they don't rob the battery.
- 1:43:41Life's pretty solid on them. So like MFN, pretty inexpensive.
- 1:43:45You've got the chorus. One Ryan, don't you?
- 1:43:48Yeah, I like it to. Be fair again batteries long
- 1:43:51doesn't move or it's not uncomfortable on the arm but I
- 1:43:55feel like if I. Got a chorus, Harry Moner?
- 1:43:57I'd have to get a chorus. Watch.
- 1:43:59You can't have to do that. No, you do because then.
- 1:44:03You can compare your chorus man to my chorus 1.
- 1:44:06Almost get a. Chorus just for the man like to
- 1:44:11be honest, I think the data. Seems more accurate or like that
- 1:44:14tells you more all about that training load and all that hates
- 1:44:17more Internet. Yeah, and the Garmin app is?
- 1:44:19So old like I don't know but just the watch is so expensive
- 1:44:25when I was on. Garmin.
- 1:44:26I didn't use the Garmin Connect app at all besides like just
- 1:44:30passing the Bluetooth file through, you know, to Strava.
- 1:44:33But being on Chorus, like the data and the interface in there
- 1:44:36is like just so insightful. It's like more modern as.
- 1:44:39Well, isn't it? Yeah.
- 1:44:41Don't know what to do. I need AI, need a treadmill, I
- 1:44:44need a pair of super shoes for Sunday or for Saturday, and I
- 1:44:47need a new heart in my nurse last watch.
- 1:44:51But no crowdfunding. I must go.
- 1:44:55Go fund me, I'm going to set one up.
- 1:45:01I reckon we've covered YouTube Diaries and Double Trouble
- 1:45:03content. Well, definitely Double Trouble
- 1:45:05has been dropped here and there throughout because these
- 1:45:10episodes are getting increasingly long.
- 1:45:11Unless anyone has a ban in YouTube Diaries they'd like to
- 1:45:14do, we can save for next week so it gets longer every.
- 1:45:17Like, yeah. Likewise, I had the Cielsa
- 1:45:21Diamond League, which is coming up next week.
- 1:45:23I was going to talk about the field, but literally no need.
- 1:45:26We'll do the results next week. The lineups are stacked.
- 1:45:29If you've that inclined to know who's going to be on the start
- 1:45:32line before you put the stream on, head over to the website.
- 1:45:35Otherwise, watch it live on YouTube or watch it replay on
- 1:45:39YouTube and then we'll talk about it next week as well.
- 1:45:44So just to conclude, the easy Double clubhouse will be coming.
- 1:45:50We're hoping ahead of Sydney Marathon, going to get it out
- 1:45:54there and then roll through to Worlds and we'll get some medal
- 1:45:58competitions running with some prizes amongst the clubhouse
- 1:46:03participants and we can all talk about the races within there.
- 1:46:07So really excited for that And yeah, stick with us.
- 1:46:09Hopefully you enjoyed the episode.
- 1:46:11Race recap next. Week as well, hopefully.
- 1:46:14Yeah, you've got. The 10 mile, Yeah, 10 mile next.
- 1:46:17Saturday OK now. Nonstop at the minute.
- 1:46:21Nice big. Big, big bakes of training races
- 1:46:24is go, go, go. But how?
- 1:46:28How high? How?
- 1:46:29High Can you likely finish in this one?
- 1:46:32Oh, I really haven't a. Clue who's run last year it was
- 1:46:34one like I want to say 49 mid. So I'm like, that is pretty fast
- 1:46:41going, pretty stolen, yeah. Yeah, I'm not sure I'll be.
- 1:46:43There, but hopefully we'll top ten.
- 1:46:46Hopefully. And is it in?
- 1:46:48Dublin Phoenix Parks and finish back in Dublin, Yeah.
- 1:46:52So I ran. Between that 3 it'd be under 310
- 1:46:56pace or 310 pace 310308. Anywhere around there, like it
- 1:47:00is pretty hilly, but with an uphill, there's going to be a
- 1:47:02downhill. So look, depends.
- 1:47:05I'm feeling how I'm feeling. Yeah, you should.
- 1:47:08Gordon No, no, just. That makes sense.
- 1:47:11That's what I was thinking, yeah. 310 pace.
- 1:47:14Are you familiar? With many of the Victorian based
- 1:47:16athletes because there was that Ballarat 15K today, wasn't
- 1:47:20there? Yeah, have a look at their times
- 1:47:21and stuff. Out of interest.
- 1:47:23Yeah, who? Someone.
- 1:47:25It's pretty flat. Though isn't it?
- 1:47:26And it's, I don't know if it's fine.
- 1:47:28It's around that freaking. Lake, I think it's more downhill
- 1:47:31actually than uphill, yeah. When it's, you're doing a
- 1:47:34proper. No, no, we need to keep.
- 1:47:36The narrative from this year's marathon?
- 1:47:38It was extremely windy. Yeah.
- 1:47:44No, to be fair. RAF and I were looking this
- 1:47:46morning and he clicked in someone's straw file and it was
- 1:47:49like 9° eleven KS an hour win. So today it was perfect.
- 1:47:55Course you don't. You.
- 1:47:56Don't get them days in Dublin unfortunately.
- 1:47:58So now hopefully a nice recap. Be nice.
- 1:48:02OK, last comment. Did you see Mona Ran three 30s
- 1:48:07for that 15K? What age is he?
- 1:48:09He's like 63. Or something that's crazy.
- 1:48:13I was trying to see. If there's like a age group
- 1:48:16world record to compare to because like can't be far off in
- 1:48:20that shape, that age. I wonder when he runs Sydney.
- 1:48:24It'd be on. It'd be.
- 1:48:25There abouts on the start line and his night kit.
- 1:48:28Yeah, but like, he'd run. A fast time for a 63 year old.
- 1:48:31Maybe he's on his way to. Valencia with Dean.
- 1:48:37I'm in. Watch this face.
- 1:48:39All right then, guys. Thanks very much.
- 1:48:44See you next week. Good luck.
