- 0:01Speaker 1: You're listening to a DM podcast.
- 0:03Speaker 2: We'll try to keep it as nice as we can,
- 0:05Speaker 2: but you might hear the occasional swear word in No
- 0:07Speaker 2: Dribble Don't Tell Mom. Hello, and welcome to No Dribble,
- 0:22Speaker 2: the podcast where we talk about netball, what we talk
- 0:25Speaker 2: about a whole lot of other stuff around netball too.
- 0:27Speaker 2: I'm Carolyn Swindell, a comedian and writer. I'm joined each
- 0:30Speaker 2: week as usual by two fabulous people, Catherine Cooch and
- 0:35Speaker 2: Liz ellis Man. We nailed that again.
- 0:37Speaker 3: We shit and we hardly had to practice it all today.
- 0:40Speaker 2: Usually I do a bit of a build up about
- 0:42Speaker 2: your careers as an introduction, but I feel like everybody
- 0:45Speaker 2: knows who you are and I'm just wasting my own time.
- 0:47Speaker 2: But I did look into something that I have zero interesting.
- 0:50Speaker 2: So I recently tried to give up my star sign
- 0:52Speaker 2: and my friend said to me, oh, good, Virgos a
- 0:54Speaker 2: shit star sign. It's like, well, you don't understand what
- 0:56Speaker 2: I mean actually is I don't want to have one
- 0:58Speaker 2: because I don't.
- 0:58Speaker 1: Believe in them.
- 0:59Speaker 2: But the three of us I have found, so between
- 1:02Speaker 2: us we have a Gemini, a Capricorn, and a Virgo.
- 1:06Speaker 2: Now certain zodiac signs are advised not to wear pearls
- 1:09Speaker 2: as they may cause disruption and turmoil in their lives.
- 1:12Speaker 2: The zodiac signs ruled by Mercury, Venus, Satin, and Rahu.
- 1:16Speaker 2: I don't know what ra who is should avoid wearing pearls,
- 1:19Speaker 2: So I don't know.
- 1:20Speaker 1: There's where do you get this stuff?
- 1:22Speaker 2: The internet?
- 1:24Speaker 3: So is it true?
- 1:26Speaker 1: Of course not?
- 1:28Speaker 3: You got this off the internet, but you forgot to
- 1:29Speaker 3: google who is Raho? I feel like who is like
- 1:32Speaker 3: the god of winning? Who?
- 1:36Speaker 2: Do you think that Rahu would be played by the
- 1:38Speaker 2: Rock if there was ever a movie of the zodiac?
- 1:41Speaker 3: Yes, yes, I like Rahu. I might just bring a
- 1:44Speaker 3: little bit more Rahu into my life, actually.
- 1:46Speaker 2: Start being a follower of Rahu.
- 1:48Speaker 1: Those star signs need to avoid pearls, was it? And
- 1:50Speaker 1: I feel like Geminis need to avoid just exercise in general.
- 1:53Speaker 3: Catherine's there's a pattern emerging here about you and your
- 1:56Speaker 3: lack of exercise. Yeah.
- 1:58Speaker 1: Hey, look, guys, I feel like something's missed and I've
- 2:01Speaker 1: got the answer.
- 2:04Speaker 3: Good God, what have you got?
- 2:06Speaker 1: It's a Georgie Horges bad No way, did I see?
- 2:11Speaker 3: Did I see on the gram that you actually hung
- 2:13Speaker 3: out not only with Georgie but with her dad.
- 2:16Speaker 1: Hey, I spent the night with the whole family, so
- 2:19Speaker 1: the mum and dad's Rob or we just call him
- 2:22Speaker 1: horge Okay, Yeah, I had photo with the grandparents. That's
- 2:26Speaker 1: Gill and Vick, and they're all very lovely and I'm
- 2:28Speaker 1: pretty sure if there was a family wedding, I'd getting
- 2:31Speaker 1: in by maybe even a bridesmaid.
- 2:32Speaker 3: When did you get to change your name by deepol
- 2:34Speaker 3: to Catherine Cox horgeous because.
- 2:37Speaker 2: She's got the tattoo she's got to kick Cox.
- 2:40Speaker 3: Yeah, but like you put horgeous at the bottom and
- 2:41Speaker 3: it sounds like Catherine Cox's gorgeous. Catherine cockr Cox Horges,
- 2:45Speaker 3: what was I'm sorry I gave you a singular cock
- 2:50Speaker 3: and not pleural Cox. I'm mad.
- 2:52Speaker 1: Sorry for those that don't know who Georgie Horges is, obviously,
- 2:56Speaker 1: she's the superstar wing attack goal attack for the Adelaide Thunderbirds,
- 3:00Speaker 1: and I have been a big fan, as most people
- 3:03Speaker 1: that listen to us talk about netball, no since she
- 3:06Speaker 1: emerged on the scene.
- 3:07Speaker 3: Hayley's Hey, but for fan read obsessed with Georgie Horges.
- 3:12Speaker 1: Yeah I did. I did say to her the other night.
- 3:14Speaker 1: If you feel like a restraining order is necessary, just
- 3:16Speaker 1: let me know before we get to that.
- 3:18Speaker 2: You're the only one making it weird. You could be
- 3:20Speaker 2: a fan without talking about restraining order.
- 3:22Speaker 1: I need to make it weird because it is a
- 3:24Speaker 1: thing now, Like everybody knows how much I love her,
- 3:27Speaker 1: so I I you know, we ham it up a
- 3:28Speaker 1: little bit. But yeah, she did not look directly in
- 3:31Speaker 1: the eye with me the other night. The rest of
- 3:33Speaker 1: the family are quite happy to come and have a
- 3:35Speaker 1: chat though.
- 3:36Speaker 2: What a wonderful birthday treat for you. Look, Happy birthday
- 3:41Speaker 2: to our resident Gemini who shouldn't wear pearl necklaces.
- 3:45Speaker 3: I bought a pearl necklace last year.
- 3:47Speaker 2: The whole line there that just went course for immaturity.
- 3:52Speaker 1: I believe you missed that, Liz.
- 3:54Speaker 3: I know, thinking about my one pearl necklace, I can't
- 3:57Speaker 3: believe I don't have like a multi strand pearl necklace.
- 3:59Speaker 3: But any who, that's a whole nother story. Yeah, I
- 4:03Speaker 3: think we should cut that bit out of me not
- 4:05Speaker 3: getting that joke.
- 4:10Speaker 1: I had a birthday.
- 4:11Speaker 2: Oh, happy birthday, thank you.
- 4:13Speaker 1: It's a bit exciting. Don't for one second assume that
- 4:16Speaker 1: I am wiser I am older. Yes, the wiser ship
- 4:19Speaker 1: has saved. Now listen. I don't normally do anything on
- 4:22Speaker 1: my birthday because you know you're older, and it's just
- 4:25Speaker 1: do we really want to celebrate getting closer to fifty.
- 4:27Speaker 1: I'm only two years away from it now.
- 4:29Speaker 3: Fifty is fine.
- 4:30Speaker 1: Caf fifty, that's awesome. I'm not scared of fifty. I
- 4:33Speaker 1: just it's fifty.
- 4:35Speaker 3: Stop being such a child. Fifty is great.
- 4:37Speaker 2: I don't want to be a downer. But when I
- 4:39Speaker 2: was in year nine, my best friend Sandra died at thirteen,
- 4:42Speaker 2: and then I had another friend died at thirty seven,
- 4:44Speaker 2: and I hit fifty and I thought I've had more
- 4:46Speaker 2: than Beck and Sandra combined. And it's like, man, I
- 4:49Speaker 2: should be thanking my lucky stars for every single day
- 4:52Speaker 2: when they made.
- 4:53Speaker 1: Me feel bad. Good.
- 4:54Speaker 3: That was the point.
- 4:55Speaker 1: Well, I don't normally do anything, and then always at
- 4:58Speaker 1: the end of the day, I'm a depressed because I've
- 5:01Speaker 1: done nothing. So I thought, this year, I'm going to
- 5:04Speaker 1: do it at home in Sydney, and so I booked
- 5:07Speaker 1: in dinner with some netty mates. I booked in a
- 5:09Speaker 1: brecky with some school mums and some friends and then
- 5:12Speaker 1: had the game in Adelaide on the weekend, so I thought,
- 5:14Speaker 1: I'm going to organize some ex teammates and we're gonna
- 5:16Speaker 1: have some drinks and stuff after the game. But for
- 5:18Speaker 1: the dinner, I wanted to do something that was a
- 5:20Speaker 1: bit fun, not something we would normally do, and so
- 5:23Speaker 1: I booked us into Teppanyaki. Oh god, I know, I
- 5:26Speaker 1: just still love it. But I haven't been for ages.
- 5:29Speaker 1: But what I've discovered is two things. Twofold professional ex
- 5:34Speaker 1: athletes and Teppanyaki not really the best mix. Competitive two competitive.
- 5:40Speaker 1: When there's bowls of rice been thrown at you, this
- 5:43Speaker 1: is like people moving their chairs back and pushing their
- 5:46Speaker 1: sleeves up, net cracking and getting right into the whole
- 5:50Speaker 1: business to catch it. But the other thing I realized
- 5:53Speaker 1: is you're sure as shit. Don't tell people that it's
- 5:55Speaker 1: your birthday. They don't bring out the lovely compliment tree
- 6:00Speaker 1: dessert with the candle in it after your meal. They
- 6:02Speaker 1: just flick egg at you. I had egg in places
- 6:04Speaker 1: that one should not have egg in, but I actually
- 6:07Speaker 1: contemplated keeping it for you after your story last week,
- 6:12Speaker 1: because I know times are tough and your eggs up.
- 6:14Speaker 3: Yeah, they are, but I don't want no secondhand egg.
- 6:17Speaker 2: You and I had a terrific catch up yesterday, obviously
- 6:20Speaker 2: because you flew in midday having done one game, and
- 6:23Speaker 2: then we caught up and had a few drinks in
- 6:25Speaker 2: the afternoon. Oh no we didn't. Sorry, Instead you went
- 6:28Speaker 2: and called another game of netball that was unscheduled.
- 6:30Speaker 1: That was the plan. So Saturday night, halfway through the
- 6:33Speaker 1: game that I was currently doing, I was all excited
- 6:36Speaker 1: about flying home, as you say, having drinks with you
- 6:38Speaker 1: for my birthday and just having a chill day of nothing,
- 6:40Speaker 1: and my boss rings me.
- 6:42Speaker 2: Nothing just to be clear, No, true, it's actually something
- 6:45Speaker 2: quite big.
- 6:46Speaker 1: But anyway, my boss rings me halfway through the game
- 6:48Speaker 1: in a bit of a mad panic because one of
- 6:50Speaker 1: our fellow commentators who was doing the Melbourne game had
- 6:52Speaker 1: lost a voice at a dobb No, but it was
- 6:55Speaker 1: Bianker Chafield. So I had to fly to Melbourne and
- 6:57Speaker 1: do that game. And there's nothing quite like doing a
- 6:59Speaker 1: game of netball, hosting and calling that you have done
- 7:01Speaker 1: absolutely zero prep for.
- 7:03Speaker 3: You would have been fine, Catherine, you know what you're doing.
- 7:05Speaker 1: It was good game, though, Giants finally won.
- 7:07Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, that was weird. It was exciting. It was
- 7:10Speaker 2: exciting through to the very end that game.
- 7:12Speaker 3: It was Hey, guys, I know I'm going to talk
- 7:14Speaker 3: super netball later on. But yesterday I spent the day,
- 7:18Speaker 3: as is my wont at the moment, at a reck
- 7:20Speaker 3: carnival in Grafted in New South Wales, where my little
- 7:23Speaker 3: girl was playing Gee Town. I've got a bit of feedback, yeah, getown.
- 7:26Speaker 3: I've got a bit of feedback about no dribble. I
- 7:28Speaker 3: was in line for the toilets and we're all good
- 7:31Speaker 3: food that comes exactly, and this gorgeous woman said to me,
- 7:36Speaker 3: we were listening to your podcast and the way here,
- 7:38Speaker 3: and I said, ah, did you like it? She said, well,
- 7:42Speaker 3: we sort of had to turn it off because I
- 7:43Speaker 3: was in the car with the girls and there's a
- 7:45Speaker 3: bit of language in it. And I was like, oh
- 7:47Speaker 3: my goodness, I felt so naughty.
- 7:50Speaker 1: But did they not listen to the warning at the
- 7:52Speaker 1: start of our podcast.
- 7:53Speaker 3: Oh I don't know. Maybe they listened to it and
- 7:55Speaker 3: they thought those girls would wouldn't swear anyway, I just
- 7:57Speaker 3: would make it clear it's Carolyn who's got all the
- 8:00Speaker 3: potty mouth. No, but I do hear lots of good
- 8:03Speaker 3: feedback and I can't tell you how much I love
- 8:06Speaker 3: being out at Rep. Carter Was. I know it sounds
- 8:07Speaker 3: really weird, but the best thing is you see all
- 8:10Speaker 3: the girls sitting around talking and having fun, and it's like,
- 8:13Speaker 3: that's in twenty years time. They're not going to remember
- 8:15Speaker 3: what games they won and lost. They're going to remember
- 8:18Speaker 3: the stupid things they did. And the stupid thing that
- 8:21Speaker 3: my daughter's team did the other day. They decided to
- 8:23Speaker 3: bring auburing lollies and make a lolly salad. Have you
- 8:26Speaker 3: seen this? Oh? Oh good, so good until the coach
- 8:30Speaker 3: came over after the third game and said, right, they
- 8:32Speaker 3: were good for the first two games. Then they put
- 8:34Speaker 3: the lollly salad together and ate it, and that's why
- 8:36Speaker 3: they lost the third game. So the loly salad is
- 8:38Speaker 3: going to live here with the parents.
- 8:40Speaker 2: So a lollly salad is just a bowl of Lolly's
- 8:42Speaker 2: I'm assuming mix lolly.
- 8:44Speaker 1: Yeah. Okay, No one vomited right though, as a result
- 8:47Speaker 1: of the law.
- 8:48Speaker 3: But it was really I was watching them playing, I
- 8:50Speaker 3: was thinking, what's happened in this game? And then then
- 8:52Speaker 3: it turned out they were all having a sugar crash after.
- 8:54Speaker 1: Their sugar so did the parents get on it.
- 8:57Speaker 3: Yeah, totally.
- 8:57Speaker 1: Was there any lollly salad there for the kids?
- 8:59Speaker 3: No?
- 9:00Speaker 1: Oh, well played.
- 9:00Speaker 3: Unfortunately, my son also found a lolly salad and he
- 9:03Speaker 3: had an impressive sugar crash on the way home.
- 9:05Speaker 1: You know, it was left the black cats. Nobody likes those.
- 9:08Speaker 2: So my girls went down on the weekend, and I've
- 9:10Speaker 2: got actually be interested in your advice on this. One
- 9:12Speaker 2: of my under eleven girls, one of the shooters, she's
- 9:14Speaker 2: got the yips and now she's talking South part of it,
- 9:16Speaker 2: and she's a good shooter. But so do I keep
- 9:19Speaker 2: putting her in and push through it and show her
- 9:22Speaker 2: that I've got faith in her, Or do I rest
- 9:24Speaker 2: her from shooting for a few weeks but then know
- 9:26Speaker 2: that that's going to reinforce in her mind that she's
- 9:29Speaker 2: had a bad run. I'm not really sure what to do.
- 9:32Speaker 1: Have you had the conversation with her, Oh, we've talked
- 9:34Speaker 1: about it. Yeah, we've talked about it, right, And does
- 9:36Speaker 1: she want to move out of shooter?
- 9:37Speaker 2: So on the weekend we agreed I wouldn't put her in,
- 9:40Speaker 2: and then I put her into keep her and she
- 9:43Speaker 2: decides you can't do that, and so I think she's
- 9:45Speaker 2: just she was one of my most versatile players, and
- 9:48Speaker 2: now she's just had a bad run with her shooting,
- 9:50Speaker 2: and now she's like, well, I can't be keeper. I
- 9:51Speaker 2: can't And I said be center, No, it can't be
- 9:53Speaker 2: sento and it's like.
- 9:55Speaker 1: I can't I persist. Yeah, I've been there, done that,
- 9:58Speaker 1: And every time she'll learn something more about how to
- 10:01Speaker 1: deal with the yips. Yeap, like whether it's a technique thing,
- 10:04Speaker 1: or a breathing thing or a thought pattern that she
- 10:06Speaker 1: has in the head. But every time she'll learn something,
- 10:08Speaker 1: So she's got to be in there doing it. It's
- 10:09Speaker 1: my advice.
- 10:10Speaker 3: And is it about, like, given that shooting is such
- 10:13Speaker 3: a you're just sitting there all by yourself and everyone
- 10:15Speaker 3: goes quiet, and you've got three seconds to think about it,
- 10:19Speaker 3: I understand why people get the yips. So is it
- 10:21Speaker 3: about coaching kids to think about their processes rather than
- 10:24Speaker 3: worrying about the outcome.
- 10:25Speaker 1: Yeah, totally. I think when that's where it starts at training.
- 10:28Speaker 1: So as you're doing your technique, you don't shoot not
- 10:31Speaker 1: thinking about it, which everybody would at training they go
- 10:33Speaker 1: through the motions, but give yourself a thought pattern, so
- 10:36Speaker 1: lift arms, flick wrist and then so when you talk
- 10:40Speaker 1: that through every time when you're in the game, you
- 10:42Speaker 1: talk that through every time, doesn't let your brain think about,
- 10:45Speaker 1: oh my god, I'm going to miss oh my god,
- 10:46Speaker 1: I'm scared of this. So it's but you've got to
- 10:49Speaker 1: train that way and you've got to practice that way,
- 10:51Speaker 1: and she's got to test herself that way.
- 10:53Speaker 2: Yeah, that's really good advice, isn't it just a mantra
- 10:55Speaker 2: that it's like shuts out the other voices in your
- 10:57Speaker 2: head because there's no difference. So she, you know, the
- 11:00Speaker 2: week before she was shooting fine, and then about two
- 11:02Speaker 2: weeks ago she lost it, and now she's decided that
- 11:05Speaker 2: it's the end of the world. It's actually amazing for
- 11:08Speaker 2: me as a junior coach to be able to talk
- 11:10Speaker 2: to two people who have played at the top level
- 11:11Speaker 2: of the game. Either of you ever have the yips
- 11:12Speaker 2: in your career.
- 11:13Speaker 1: Defenders probably don't get the yips. There's nothing to get
- 11:16Speaker 1: the yips about, is there?
- 11:17Speaker 3: No?
- 11:17Speaker 1: I mean, by and larger. It's a reactive position. I've
- 11:21Speaker 1: had them, and they're horrendous. And now as a commentator,
- 11:24Speaker 1: I can see it when other people get it because
- 11:27Speaker 1: you know the signs and the ways they play, and
- 11:30Speaker 1: it makes me feel sick. Even when I see somebody
- 11:32Speaker 1: else get it, it makes me feel sick. It almost is
- 11:34Speaker 1: a flashback.
- 11:35Speaker 3: What are the science, Catherine? When you're watching it, what
- 11:37Speaker 3: do you see? Oh?
- 11:39Speaker 1: Just hesitation, not like obviously not wanting to shoot, which
- 11:43Speaker 1: you know as a shoot is problematic. Obviously shots that
- 11:46Speaker 1: consistently fall short or they generally fall short. It's not
- 11:49Speaker 1: so much overshooting, but it's definitely the not wanting to
- 11:52Speaker 1: take shots that becomes really obvious. It's a horrible place
- 11:55Speaker 1: to be. I thought my career was over when I
- 11:58Speaker 1: had them, because that's your job. Like, you're a goal shooter.
- 12:02Speaker 1: So if you can't do that, what's the point of
- 12:04Speaker 1: view being in a team? And I did everything to
- 12:07Speaker 1: try and get over mine. I spoke to p Sykes,
- 12:10Speaker 1: did like some hypnosis stuff until you know, I finally
- 12:14Speaker 1: found some ways, and one of them was that technique.
- 12:16Speaker 1: Just you know, the practicing and training and then talking
- 12:18Speaker 1: it through in the game that really helped me get
- 12:20Speaker 1: over it.
- 12:20Speaker 2: So is this just one period in your career like
- 12:23Speaker 2: or did it happen a couple.
- 12:24Speaker 1: Of times like you? But I think you recognize it
- 12:26Speaker 1: when it starts to happen again down the track and
- 12:28Speaker 1: then you can get on top of it quicker. But
- 12:30Speaker 1: when I first when it first happened to me, it
- 12:32Speaker 1: went on for so long that it was the lowest
- 12:35Speaker 1: of the lows, and I thought that I was done
- 12:37Speaker 1: all over.
- 12:37Speaker 3: Red Rover, did you do some tapping, like, didn't you
- 12:40Speaker 3: have some like? That was pretty interesting?
- 12:42Speaker 1: Yeah, EFT. And it's called emotional freeing technique, and it's
- 12:46Speaker 1: about tapping on sense three points that are meant to
- 12:49Speaker 1: release tensional stress. But you've got to think about the
- 12:52Speaker 1: problem at the time and it helps kind of.
- 12:55Speaker 2: So that's not on court you're doing it. You're visualizing
- 12:58Speaker 2: the game and.
- 13:00Speaker 1: And visualizing shooting and how it makes you feel at
- 13:02Speaker 1: the time. Yeah.
- 13:03Speaker 3: Yeah, for people who were listening at home and not
- 13:05Speaker 3: looking sitting in the studio. Now we're tapping our forheads
- 13:08Speaker 3: because that's what you used to do, didn't you.
- 13:09Speaker 1: Yeah, like forehead, side of your heads, your ear. I
- 13:13Speaker 1: think there was one on your chin, maybe on your lip,
- 13:17Speaker 1: all kind of around different places.
- 13:18Speaker 2: It was fascinating, And you took your peil necklace off
- 13:20Speaker 2: obviously phaps.
- 13:21Speaker 3: Absolutely, it's interesting. Like defenders don't get the yip so much.
- 13:27Speaker 3: But there was certainly a couple of times in my
- 13:29Speaker 3: career where I felt I wasn't reading the game as
- 13:32Speaker 3: well as I could have, and I didn't know if
- 13:33Speaker 3: it was when I broke it down I wasn't reading
- 13:37Speaker 3: the game, or whether I had lost confidence to go
- 13:39Speaker 3: and have a crack at those long intercepts that I
- 13:42Speaker 3: used to love screaming out of the circle for And
- 13:44Speaker 3: that really is a confidencing and so for me, it
- 13:47Speaker 3: was always just about going back to the process. But
- 13:51Speaker 3: we had a psych tell us this once, and I
- 13:53Speaker 3: really liked it. He talked about the fact about how
- 13:56Speaker 3: powerful your brain is and how you can trick yourself
- 14:00Speaker 3: into thinking that you're playing well. So he made us
- 14:02Speaker 3: write down the things that the behaviors that we exhibited
- 14:05Speaker 3: and when we were playing well, and then got us
- 14:08Speaker 3: to think about when we weren't playing well to still
- 14:11Speaker 3: exhibit those behaviors anyway, so that your body was like, oh,
- 14:15Speaker 3: I must be playing well, fake it, fake it till
- 14:17Speaker 3: you make it, which I always thought was really interesting.
- 14:20Speaker 3: So for me, when I'm playing well on my toes
- 14:22Speaker 3: and I'm yappy, I've got plenty to say, lots to
- 14:24Speaker 3: say to the gold efans come on till you that
- 14:26Speaker 3: I didn't trash talk. It's a bit all good trash
- 14:28Speaker 3: talking when you play goalkeeper, because trash talk. And then
- 14:31Speaker 3: you got to stand next to the goal shooter, you know,
- 14:36Speaker 3: play against it like Ira and Vandyke, who's bigger and
- 14:39Speaker 3: stronger and better than me. There wasn't a lot to
- 14:40Speaker 3: say other than hi, how you doing? Yeah? But like I,
- 14:43Speaker 3: I'd be yappy, you know, you'd be like talking to
- 14:46Speaker 3: your teammates and laughing and that sort of stuff and
- 14:48Speaker 3: really enjoying it. And then when I wasn't playing well,
- 14:51Speaker 3: I'd be really quiet. So you know, I just worked
- 14:54Speaker 3: on making sure that I was still talking, and you
- 14:56Speaker 3: sort of hope it's sometimes it worked and sometimes it didn't.
- 14:58Speaker 3: But it's interesting how it's such a brain game.
- 15:01Speaker 1: But there was always times too, with you that you
- 15:03Speaker 1: couldn't read the play because you didn't have your contacts in.
- 15:08Speaker 2: Thank you, he appreciate it.
- 15:10Speaker 3: And some days showing up is all you got to do.
- 15:12Speaker 3: Set forward. It's a World Cup. You probably should bet
- 15:14Speaker 3: a bit more effect into it.
- 15:15Speaker 2: Then I spent yesterday moving between the couch and my
- 15:23Speaker 2: bed with it was just a cold, but you know.
- 15:25Speaker 2: It was like I could take the day off because
- 15:26Speaker 2: you dumped me, and so I thought that I would
- 15:29Speaker 2: watched a lot of netball, watched hacks, but I also hacks,
- 15:33Speaker 2: so great is it?
- 15:34Speaker 3: Right?
- 15:34Speaker 2: Went down some real rabbit holes on the internet and
- 15:37Speaker 2: found some great stuff. Some sports I feel like we
- 15:39Speaker 2: should really lean into, like professional pillow fighting what but
- 15:42Speaker 2: even better? And this one, I'll let you guess what
- 15:46Speaker 2: country it's out of. It is professional pretzel cutting and
- 15:50Speaker 2: precision is the aim. So what country might that be?
- 15:54Speaker 3: Germany?
- 15:55Speaker 2: Yeah? Well done, got it in one. This is crazy confusion.
- 15:59Speaker 1: I know, I wonder I need to see it. I'm
- 16:01Speaker 1: a visual person.
- 16:02Speaker 2: It's not much more complex than you're imagining. We will
- 16:05Speaker 2: put this up on the ground, but it is actually
- 16:07Speaker 2: take a pretzel, use a knife, cut it in half,
- 16:11Speaker 2: measure the two sides, and if they are exactly equal,
- 16:14Speaker 2: you are the winner.
- 16:14Speaker 1: Like that is wow?
- 16:16Speaker 2: I know this is I think my OCD would be
- 16:18Speaker 2: good at that. Yeah, I think it might be too.
- 16:19Speaker 3: Yeah, whereas I just be like pretzel yeah yeah, equally
- 16:23Speaker 3: in my belly.
- 16:29Speaker 2: I love that people are pursuing excellence in these crazy things,
- 16:35Speaker 2: and I'm wondering you know, okay, fine, you were good
- 16:38Speaker 2: at netball? What else have you got for? It's what
- 16:40Speaker 2: else can you do? What are your crazy skills?
- 16:42Speaker 3: And before we leave the pretzels, I would like to
- 16:44Speaker 3: know how do people know in the first place that
- 16:48Speaker 3: this is something they'd like to pursue or did they?
- 16:51Speaker 3: Did someone one day go I'm going to cut up
- 16:53Speaker 3: Is it the little, the tiny little pretzels or those big.
- 16:56Speaker 1: Big, big ones?
- 16:57Speaker 2: Don't you reckon? It started as an argument between siblings. Yes,
- 17:02Speaker 2: you can have one of these and cut it in half.
- 17:04Speaker 2: So in our house it's like one cuts the other
- 17:07Speaker 2: one gets to decide which half they want.
- 17:10Speaker 1: That's sensible.
- 17:11Speaker 2: My friend's mother used to when she was a kid,
- 17:13Speaker 2: used to eat mangoes and make a face like it
- 17:16Speaker 2: was awful and sour, so the kids wouldn't ask for
- 17:18Speaker 2: a bite of her. And it wasn't until like they
- 17:20Speaker 2: were sort of tenish or whatever, that they discovered that
- 17:23Speaker 2: mango is delicious.
- 17:25Speaker 1: Oh, this is a rabbit hole. We need to go
- 17:27Speaker 1: down the things that parents have said to kids. Because Liz,
- 17:30Speaker 1: talk to us about your dad and mister Whippi.
- 17:32Speaker 3: Well, my dad, my late father, Alfie, he used to
- 17:35Speaker 3: he told us when we were little that when they
- 17:36Speaker 3: played the music was tell everyone they'd run out of
- 17:38Speaker 3: ice cream.
- 17:40Speaker 2: It's so great.
- 17:43Speaker 3: These pretzels. At what point do you go? I can
- 17:45Speaker 3: cut a pretzel with precision, and I'm going to turn
- 17:48Speaker 3: that into a competition.
- 17:49Speaker 2: I am the best at it. I am the best.
- 17:52Speaker 1: Think they have a world championships?
- 17:54Speaker 2: Well, is there a world championship in peeling eggs or
- 17:57Speaker 2: dishwasher packing? Because if so, you two won't be the
- 18:00Speaker 2: only world champions in the room.
- 18:01Speaker 1: I've got to say, pealing egg peeling eggs? What do
- 18:04Speaker 1: you mean peeling it?
- 18:05Speaker 2: Well, so you boil eggs? So do you ever have
- 18:07Speaker 2: deviled eggs?
- 18:08Speaker 1: This is pretty much a Christmas boiling? So hard about it?
- 18:11Speaker 2: You want to peel it perfectly so you don't have
- 18:14Speaker 2: chunks cutting out of the white. So it's a are
- 18:17Speaker 2: you looking at me like it?
- 18:18Speaker 1: Just like every time what I do that without cutting
- 18:22Speaker 1: any egg. But the key is the temperature of the egg.
- 18:24Speaker 2: Yeah, exactly.
- 18:25Speaker 3: The key is to use eggs that aren't completely fresh,
- 18:28Speaker 3: because the fresher they are, the more white stuff sticks
- 18:30Speaker 3: to the shell. But as they as a age, the
- 18:32Speaker 3: white stuff pulls away from the shell.
- 18:34Speaker 2: There you go, Catherine just uses old eggs.
- 18:36Speaker 1: I do well min from Woollies Fertility.
- 18:38Speaker 2: Special brought to you by No Driven. And what was
- 18:42Speaker 2: your other one dishwasher?
- 18:46Speaker 1: Matthew, Lizza's husband. So in their house, if you if
- 18:51Speaker 1: you cook, you don't have to clean up. Ye?
- 18:53Speaker 3: Good.
- 18:53Speaker 1: So when I lived with Lizzen Matthew, that's fine, no
- 18:56Speaker 1: dramas lose is an amazing cool cabit for that to happen.
- 18:59Speaker 1: She uses every free freakin' pot and pan when she cooks,
- 19:03Speaker 1: so clean. Cleaning up is a bitch. There was a
- 19:07Speaker 1: moment there I think I went on strike. I'm not
- 19:09Speaker 1: eating because I don't want to have to clean up clean.
- 19:12Speaker 3: You never said that, Catherine.
- 19:13Speaker 1: No, but Matthew and I did look forward to any
- 19:15Speaker 1: time Liz was away because we'd have cereal for dinner
- 19:18Speaker 1: and we loved it so much. It didn't happen that often.
- 19:22Speaker 1: But back to the dishwashers. The last time I was
- 19:24Speaker 1: up at their place, I was trying to help and
- 19:25Speaker 1: clean up and whatever else, and put stuff in the dishwasher.
- 19:29Speaker 1: Next minute Matthew comes over and takes it all out
- 19:31Speaker 1: and puts it back in the way that he repacks it.
- 19:34Speaker 3: So I never we hardly ever fight, but when we fight,
- 19:38Speaker 3: it's about dishwasher packing.
- 19:40Speaker 1: It's so do you have a different thing to him there?
- 19:45Speaker 3: Mine's just all over the shop like I just strolled
- 19:47Speaker 3: all in and hope for the best.
- 19:49Speaker 2: I did see something on Instagram recently. It's like in
- 19:51Speaker 2: every couple there's one who packs the dishwasher like a
- 19:53Speaker 2: German engineer, and one who throws the dishes from the
- 19:56Speaker 2: other side of the room like a meth addict.
- 20:01Speaker 3: And just for transparency, I also hang the close out
- 20:03Speaker 3: like a methatic. So he I actually am not lad
- 20:06Speaker 3: to hang the close out, but he's so anal, like
- 20:08Speaker 3: he hangs his undies like instead of like I just
- 20:12Speaker 3: use one peg and just find some way to hang
- 20:14Speaker 3: it where he end to end and boots two pigs
- 20:17Speaker 3: per pair of.
- 20:18Speaker 1: Undies and they have to be the same color peg. Okay,
- 20:21Speaker 1: I only ever have matching pegs.
- 20:24Speaker 3: Wow, I don't know how you and I are friends, Catherine.
- 20:27Speaker 2: Anyone else got a crazy skill you want to throw
- 20:29Speaker 2: in here? Challenge me? Bring it at me.
- 20:30Speaker 3: Yeah, when there is a world championship for being able
- 20:34Speaker 3: to tell the time at night when you wake up
- 20:36Speaker 3: before you look at your watch. I will so win
- 20:38Speaker 3: that one. I will win it by a mile.
- 20:40Speaker 2: Nice.
- 20:40Speaker 1: I agree with you because I can do that too.
- 20:42Speaker 1: But now I don't want to look at my watch either,
- 20:44Speaker 1: because it affects if you go back to sleep well
- 20:47Speaker 1: or not. Oh that's true, But then I always always like,
- 20:49Speaker 1: oh no, but I want to have a look and
- 20:50Speaker 1: see if I'm closed.
- 20:51Speaker 3: I want to see if I'm right.
- 20:52Speaker 1: So battle in my head every night.
- 20:54Speaker 2: It's exhausting, Catherine, anything to offer.
- 20:58Speaker 1: It's not a special skill like the Avengers. But I
- 21:04Speaker 1: love the challenge of getting maximum points on my rewards
- 21:08Speaker 1: card when I do my bully shop. Anyone, anyone, No.
- 21:12Speaker 2: I'm sorry. I just had a little sleep then did.
- 21:15Speaker 1: Your eyes close over? Surely there's people that do that,
- 21:18Speaker 1: Like you've got to go on there and find which
- 21:19Speaker 1: products and you're like your ten times points for staff
- 21:23Speaker 1: and and like because I transfer them all over to
- 21:27Speaker 1: Quantus for my Quantus points. So it's about my holiday
- 21:29Speaker 1: at the end of the year.
- 21:30Speaker 2: You're trying to make it sound sexy, and I just
- 21:33Speaker 2: wanted to remind every challenge this is not just a
- 21:35Speaker 2: podcast for middle aged people. If you've tuned in now,
- 21:38Speaker 2: don't worry. We'll get past this very quickly.
- 21:40Speaker 3: Catherine, do you use shopper dockets still exist? I want
- 21:47Speaker 3: to know what the line is do like you've talked
- 21:49Speaker 3: about wars cards. You can't take it, But I.
- 21:51Speaker 1: Just get off on getting maximum points, like like I've
- 21:54Speaker 1: wrought to the system or something like it. If I'm
- 21:57Speaker 1: going to pay for it, I'm going to take you
- 21:58Speaker 1: for all your points.
- 22:00Speaker 2: Down the man all right. Time to get into some
- 22:05Speaker 2: serious Nettie talk now. So on the weekend. I know
- 22:08Speaker 2: we talked about the rule changes earlier this year, about
- 22:10Speaker 2: how the toss up has gone something that the tall
- 22:12Speaker 2: girls are happy about, but we short girls are not
- 22:14Speaker 2: thrilled about it. But I reckon it might have been
- 22:16Speaker 2: handy to have on the weekend.
- 22:17Speaker 1: It could have been. Yes, there was a moment in
- 22:20Speaker 1: the Thunderbird Swifts game where Laura Sherrian and Alie Smith
- 22:24Speaker 1: both had their hands on the ball, but because there
- 22:27Speaker 1: was no call and no toss up, as you say,
- 22:29Speaker 1: they were trying to wrestle for it. Alie Smith actually
- 22:32Speaker 1: pulled the ball that hard that she threw the player,
- 22:35Speaker 1: which was Laura Sherrian, onto the ground. Whoops. So the
- 22:39Speaker 1: rule is if it's simultaneous possession of the ball. It's
- 22:44Speaker 1: meant to go to the team that had possession at
- 22:45Speaker 1: the time. That is the new rule. In lieu of them,
- 22:47Speaker 1: they're not being a contact, but it was the way
- 22:50Speaker 1: she did it, so the penalty was advanced down the court,
- 22:52Speaker 1: as it should have been because it was just too
- 22:54Speaker 1: aggressive and completely unnecessary.
- 22:55Speaker 3: How do you know, though, like, if there's not going
- 22:57Speaker 3: to be a toss up, was it deliberate?
- 22:58Speaker 1: Well, no, like they both went to they grabbed the
- 23:00Speaker 1: ball at the same time and in fighting for it,
- 23:03Speaker 1: so the call probably should have come a bit earlier
- 23:05Speaker 1: from the umpire. But again, because it's a new rule,
- 23:07Speaker 1: I think everybody's learning, there's some teething issues with it,
- 23:10Speaker 1: and fighting for the ball is fine, but it was
- 23:12Speaker 1: the way Ali Smith did it. She literally pulled the
- 23:15Speaker 1: player onto and threw her onto the floor like it
- 23:19Speaker 1: was very aggressive and completely unnecessary, and at that point
- 23:22Speaker 1: the umpire just went not having a bar of that,
- 23:25Speaker 1: and advanced the penalty down the court, which he should
- 23:28Speaker 1: have done. It was a good call in my opinion,
- 23:30Speaker 1: but yes, if there was a toss up, it would
- 23:32Speaker 1: have been far more civilized. Everybody at three feet.
- 23:35Speaker 2: Well, then Ally's defense. Certainly, one of the coaching techniques
- 23:38Speaker 2: I use with my under elevens is to say to them,
- 23:40Speaker 2: pretend there's fifty.
- 23:41Speaker 1: Dollars, take to that ball.
- 23:43Speaker 2: I want you that hungry. Maybe Briani said that too, Alik.
- 23:46Speaker 1: How was that game? Though? The Swifts had their lowest
- 23:50Speaker 1: score ever. This is going back to nineteen ninety seven,
- 23:55Speaker 1: and there is a super shot in play Man. How
- 23:58Speaker 1: does that happen?
- 23:59Speaker 3: And we played some bad games in the early years.
- 24:01Speaker 1: Oh god, yeah, we drank some cocktails and then we
- 24:04Speaker 1: went to netball. That was I mean, that's really really amazing.
- 24:09Speaker 3: I was just watching the score on the on the
- 24:11Speaker 3: netball Livac Tickover and I went home later and watched it,
- 24:14Speaker 3: and I kept thinking that something was wrong with the
- 24:16Speaker 3: app because like they scored thirteen goals in the first
- 24:18Speaker 3: quarter and then five in the last quarter. I just
- 24:21Speaker 3: assumed that the app was broken, but it wasn't. The
- 24:23Speaker 3: Swifts attack line was broken.
- 24:24Speaker 1: Yeah, the Swifts whole team was broken in that particular game.
- 24:27Speaker 1: But how crazy is this season being? Because last week
- 24:30Speaker 1: they beat the Giants by twenty four, then they lose
- 24:33Speaker 1: by twenty five, Like that's a forty nine goal turnaround.
- 24:36Speaker 3: Look at you, crazy, it's been getting a fingers out.
- 24:40Speaker 2: Maybe I have gottenweiser, but I don't think that was
- 24:44Speaker 2: the most exciting game of the weekend. It was really
- 24:46Speaker 2: good to see the Giants maps. It was a really
- 24:48Speaker 2: exciting game, I thought.
- 24:50Speaker 1: And it was great for the Giants because not only
- 24:52Speaker 1: did they win the game, but they controlled it from
- 24:54Speaker 1: start to finish. They won four quarters, so they'll be
- 24:56Speaker 1: pumped by the fact that a They've got the win.
- 24:58Speaker 1: But I think that they did it convincing fashion.
- 25:01Speaker 3: It's hard to pick, isn't it, though, because the MAVs
- 25:03Speaker 3: had to win last week.
- 25:04Speaker 1: Yeah, it's literally all over the shop. The ladder is
- 25:07Speaker 1: chopping and changing. And then the best game of the
- 25:10Speaker 1: round has got to be the Vixens and the West
- 25:12Speaker 1: Coast Fever.
- 25:14Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 25:14Speaker 1: I thought for sure that would have been all Fever,
- 25:17Speaker 1: but the Vixens beat them and beat them by eleven.
- 25:20Speaker 2: That was crazy, though, because it was so close the
- 25:22Speaker 2: whole way through and then just the end. Like that
- 25:24Speaker 2: eleven goal difference at the end I don't think reflects
- 25:27Speaker 2: what the rest of the game was like it it
- 25:29Speaker 2: could have gone either way.
- 25:30Speaker 3: Like you do wonder if for Fever the losses is
- 25:34Speaker 3: going to be a good thing. Like, of course you
- 25:35Speaker 3: never want to lose, but you actually do learn where
- 25:38Speaker 3: your improvements need to come when you lose, because you
- 25:41Speaker 3: tend to go back more and analyze the game. So
- 25:44Speaker 3: I think the real test for them will be for
- 25:46Speaker 3: how they come out this week and where they've improved.
- 25:49Speaker 2: I'm going to nominate Jamie Lee Price for vertical Jump
- 25:51Speaker 2: of the Season, though I'm going to go early. I
- 25:52Speaker 2: know we're only about halfway through the season, but that
- 25:54Speaker 2: was an amazing jump right at the end of the
- 25:56Speaker 2: game there that she took.
- 25:57Speaker 1: I'll take your Jamie Lee Price and I'll raise you
- 25:59Speaker 1: a Shamira Sterling Humphrey. Oh oh, I'll show you one
- 26:03Speaker 1: of hers. We'll put it on the gram insanity.
- 26:05Speaker 3: Do you think she has to check in with the
- 26:07Speaker 3: Bureau of like air people.
- 26:09Speaker 1: Adelaide Airport beyond call every time there's a game.
- 26:17Speaker 2: Okay, Dribblers, thanks so much for all your fabulous messages
- 26:19Speaker 2: during the week. We mentioned Liam last week, who was
- 26:22Speaker 2: helping us understand the Great scoring Debacle in nineteen ninety four.
- 26:27Speaker 2: Liam is a font of knowledge, and thank you very
- 26:30Speaker 2: much for all of the detail you've been providing there
- 26:32Speaker 2: to us, Liam Platt, I would also like to acknowledge
- 26:35Speaker 2: Jenny Kumar on netball Talk. Now I'm on netball Talk
- 26:38Speaker 2: and there's a lot of people on netbill Talk. This
- 26:40Speaker 2: is a Facebook group also Big Georgia Horges.
- 26:43Speaker 1: Fans Gorgeous Georgie Horgeous.
- 26:46Speaker 2: But Jenny does a great job there with that community,
- 26:49Speaker 2: and thanks for support and thanks for engagement. She said
- 26:51Speaker 2: she's been laughing in the car listening, which is fantastic.
- 26:54Speaker 2: So always drive safe though, Jenny, won't you.
- 26:57Speaker 1: Georgia Radjik, She's a message well and said laughed on
- 27:01Speaker 1: the train all the way to work. Thanks for everything
- 27:04Speaker 1: you're doing, guys. X. Teammate of ours, Lara Cranfield sent
- 27:07Speaker 1: me a message as well.
- 27:08Speaker 3: Liz.
- 27:09Speaker 1: She said, I've been listening to other podcasts. One of
- 27:12Speaker 1: the other podcasts. Yeah, she's seeing them, but she's not
- 27:15Speaker 1: anymore because she's had a comparison now, which is us.
- 27:18Speaker 1: And she said, you guys are hysterical, and I've realized
- 27:21Speaker 1: how slow and boring my other podcast was, so it's gone.
- 27:23Speaker 2: Don't you wish your podcast like me?
- 27:27Speaker 3: Don't funny story about Lara? She when I've made the
- 27:32Speaker 3: under seven EN's team for the New South Wales. Her
- 27:34Speaker 3: twin sisters were in that team and Lara was this
- 27:36Speaker 3: not nose kid and then she turned out to be
- 27:39Speaker 3: she was like eight, she was much younger than them
- 27:41Speaker 3: and she turned out to be the best netballer of
- 27:43Speaker 3: the wall.
- 27:44Speaker 2: That's amazing those sporting families though, isn't it. Where there's
- 27:47Speaker 2: just like the war family with the cricketers and the
- 27:50Speaker 2: John's family with the drinking rugby league.
- 27:55Speaker 3: Well this was the Wellhem family. Hopefully they're listening.
- 27:58Speaker 2: And Liz, do we have a nomine for win beneath
- 28:00Speaker 2: our Wings this week? You know this Dribblers. This is
- 28:02Speaker 2: the segment where we give a shout out to the
- 28:05Speaker 2: people who keep our game alive at the community level
- 28:07Speaker 2: every week. And we have been absolutely thrilled with the
- 28:10Speaker 2: nominations we've been getting because there is a lot of
- 28:13Speaker 2: appreciation out there for the people doing the work, and that's.
- 28:15Speaker 3: Fabulous there is. And I just love a good netball name,
- 28:18Speaker 3: and Barb is a great netball name. Now Mas has
- 28:21Speaker 3: told me Barb's age. Maz nominated Barb and she's given
- 28:24Speaker 3: me the age, so I think I can say Bob
- 28:25Speaker 3: is seventy three this year and it's her first year
- 28:29Speaker 3: as president. She's been associated with Shamrocks Netball Club in
- 28:32Speaker 3: Blacktown in Western Sydney, which is a home Achille Debrie.
- 28:36Speaker 3: Actually she started her netball career in Blacktown. Former Diamonds goalkeeper,
- 28:40Speaker 3: New South Wales goalkeeper and an.
