- 0:02Speaker 1: Welcome to the Wired to Hunt podcast, your home for
- 0:06Speaker 1: deer hunting news, stories and strategies, and now your host,
- 0:11Speaker 1: Mark Kenyon. Welcome to the Wired to Hunt podcast. I'm
- 0:16Speaker 1: your host, Mark Kenyan, and this episode number two and
- 0:21Speaker 1: today in the show, we are back for another episode
- 0:23Speaker 1: of our fresh mini series in which we're getting fresh
- 0:26Speaker 1: from the field updates from deer hunters across the country
- 0:29Speaker 1: on what deer doing right now, help coming conditions might
- 0:32Speaker 1: impact them, and what you can do in the coming
- 0:34Speaker 1: days to fill your tag. Welcome to the Wired to
- 0:48Speaker 1: Hunt podcast, brought to you by on X. It is
- 0:52Speaker 1: me and Spencer new Hearth here for another episode of
- 0:56Speaker 1: our fresh radio mini series which we hear from hunters
- 1:01Speaker 1: all across the country on the latest in dear activity,
- 1:05Speaker 1: on how current conditions are impacting deer and deer hunting,
- 1:10Speaker 1: and the different ideas in tips and tactics that can
- 1:14Speaker 1: help you feel a tag right now in these next
- 1:17Speaker 1: couple of days. That's the game plan for today, Spencer.
- 1:21Speaker 1: Do you feel that given the given the gauntlet I
- 1:27Speaker 1: just laid, can we meet those expectations? Can we deliver
- 1:30Speaker 1: on the episode today? I think we can. I think
- 1:33Speaker 1: listeners should be interested into what these four guests have
- 1:38Speaker 1: to say because this time of year, maybe more than
- 1:41Speaker 1: any other time of year, the deer movement seems to
- 1:44Speaker 1: be almost like a light switch, like the velvet's gone,
- 1:47Speaker 1: the bachelor group's break up, and these bucks that you've
- 1:50Speaker 1: been seeing on their summer patterns for the last three
- 1:53Speaker 1: months now t are nocturnal, and so like hearing this
- 1:58Speaker 1: kind of information, I think in early to mid September
- 2:01Speaker 1: is more valuable than maybe even like early November. Yeah yeah, well,
- 2:06Speaker 1: yetta strike when the iron is hot, and it can
- 2:08Speaker 1: get cold real fast this time of year. So that said,
- 2:12Speaker 1: who do we talk to? We start off in Maryland
- 2:15Speaker 1: and talked to Cody Hesseltine, and then in South Dakota
- 2:19Speaker 1: was Alex Comstock from White Tailed DNA, and then we
- 2:22Speaker 1: get on to Florida from Story Hunts is Brandon Story,
- 2:25Speaker 1: and then we talked to Hunter Forbes from Southern White
- 2:27Speaker 1: Tail Outfitters in Kentucky. Now I enjoyed talking to these
- 2:32Speaker 1: guys because I have not been getting my white tail
- 2:34Speaker 1: fixed lately. I'm about to start focusing on elk. But
- 2:39Speaker 1: you Mark, you have been doing some scouting in preparation
- 2:42Speaker 1: for Michigan's opening, which is still like three weeks away,
- 2:45Speaker 1: is that correct? Yeah, yeah, to two and a half
- 2:48Speaker 1: weeks something like that. But yes, doing my long distance scouting,
- 2:51Speaker 1: which every year I find myself doing more and more
- 2:54Speaker 1: and more of, um, just getting out there with a
- 2:57Speaker 1: spotting scope and watching being fields or food plots or
- 3:00Speaker 1: crop fields of some kind depending on what I can
- 3:03Speaker 1: get access to. And and yeah, you know, the last
- 3:06Speaker 1: couple of days up until today, we have had some
- 3:10Speaker 1: pretty cool weather for the time of the year, and
- 3:13Speaker 1: I think that in part has led to some pretty
- 3:16Speaker 1: good activity out there still in some of these fields.
- 3:18Speaker 1: So I've got on one of the properties that can hunt.
- 3:20Speaker 1: There was a late planted bean field, so it is
- 3:23Speaker 1: still very green and the deer just hammering it. So, oh,
- 3:28Speaker 1: I don't know. Handful nights ago, I saw a real
- 3:31Speaker 1: nice I've been calling the big nine, but I think
- 3:35Speaker 1: he's actually ten point. He's got a short G four
- 3:37Speaker 1: on on his right side, I guess, but he's a
- 3:41Speaker 1: three or four year old. And then last night and
- 3:44Speaker 1: the night before that, I saw another buck that I've
- 3:48Speaker 1: been seeing a lot this summer, really nice ten pointer um.
- 3:52Speaker 1: And I don't know if you saw this. I posted
- 3:53Speaker 1: this on Instagram last night, Spencer. But I've been watching
- 3:57Speaker 1: this buck growth throughout the summer, and I've been trying
- 4:00Speaker 1: to figure out, like, do I know this, dear? Is this?
- 4:03Speaker 1: Is this somehow a deer that took a big jump
- 4:04Speaker 1: from last year? He kind of seems familiar, and a
- 4:09Speaker 1: two year old from last year kept pop up popping
- 4:11Speaker 1: up in my head as a deer, like I need
- 4:13Speaker 1: to go back and compare pictures and video to this one.
- 4:16Speaker 1: So finally last night I went and did it. I
- 4:18Speaker 1: looked at a bunch of pictures, pull of a bunch
- 4:19Speaker 1: of old video, and then compared it with all the
- 4:23Speaker 1: phone scope footage I have of this deer this year,
- 4:26Speaker 1: and matching him up with similar angles. I think it's
- 4:31Speaker 1: a match. I think, at least it is a very
- 4:32Speaker 1: good chance it's a match. This dear last year was
- 4:35Speaker 1: just a decent two year old eight pointer here in Michigan, UM.
- 4:40Speaker 1: And I noticed him last year because I don't know
- 4:43Speaker 1: if you remember, But all through the late summer and
- 4:45Speaker 1: early fall last year, I was still holding out hope
- 4:48Speaker 1: that holy Field might have made it UM And so
- 4:52Speaker 1: I got a couple like grainy distant pictures of like
- 4:55Speaker 1: a tall eight pointer in the distance and had a
- 4:59Speaker 1: frame that kind of till ted it up. His main
- 5:00Speaker 1: beings kind of tilted up at the end. I'm like, man,
- 5:02Speaker 1: could that be holy Field? If if so, he really
- 5:05Speaker 1: took a jump down, like he really decreased in size. Well,
- 5:08Speaker 1: it turns out it wasn't holy Field. It was this buck.
- 5:11Speaker 1: It was this eight pointer. And I ended up seeing
- 5:13Speaker 1: him a bunch throughout the season, and in November he started.
- 5:17Speaker 1: He appeared one day like really injured, like seriously gimped up.
- 5:21Speaker 1: Uh So I just kind of referred to as gimpy
- 5:23Speaker 1: every time of something that's that's gimpy in my head.
- 5:25Speaker 1: He pop out almost he like it's like he followed
- 5:28Speaker 1: me around every time I was out. I would see him,
- 5:30Speaker 1: Um well lo and behold, I think that gimpy is
- 5:34Speaker 1: this ten pointer really has picking a nice jump. He's
- 5:39Speaker 1: a good looking ten point, just a three and a
- 5:40Speaker 1: half year old, but he's been out there feeding. This
- 5:43Speaker 1: big nine was out there feeding, you know, thirty minutes
- 5:46Speaker 1: before dark. So that's a long winded way of saying
- 5:50Speaker 1: kind of like what you mentioned at the top that
- 5:53Speaker 1: when the going is good, the going is good. And
- 5:55Speaker 1: so we've had cool weather and I had a good
- 5:58Speaker 1: food source and that got these uh, these nicer bucks
- 6:01Speaker 1: in the area out on their feet. So I'm gonna
- 6:03Speaker 1: keep on keeping tabs on it, you know, the next
- 6:05Speaker 1: two weeks, going to stay off the property and um,
- 6:09Speaker 1: just observe and maybe put something in place for opening
- 6:12Speaker 1: day or that first week. But I'm excited. It's coming quick.
- 6:17Speaker 1: It's coming quick. It sounds like that light bulb where
- 6:21Speaker 1: these bucks break up their bachelor groups and go nocturnal
- 6:24Speaker 1: has not quite turned off for you yet, Is that correct? Well,
- 6:28Speaker 1: I will say the bachelor groups seemed to have broken
- 6:30Speaker 1: up these so these sightings that I've seen recently were
- 6:32Speaker 1: so low sightings. And in previous you know, all throughout
- 6:35Speaker 1: the summer it was a big group of them. And
- 6:37Speaker 1: now I've just been seeing that one of them would
- 6:40Speaker 1: be out there and then two days later the other
- 6:42Speaker 1: one would be out there. But they're all by themselves now.
- 6:45Speaker 1: So I do think that is that has happened. But
- 6:48Speaker 1: you know, it's still early. That testosterone it's it's rising,
- 6:52Speaker 1: right the velvets peeled that the stopstone is rising, But
- 6:55Speaker 1: we certainly are still in that somewhat friendly stage. As
- 6:58Speaker 1: we get closer to octog, we're you know, we're gonna
- 7:00Speaker 1: start seeing things changed every week, but they're still on
- 7:04Speaker 1: speaking terms right now. I'd say, and and something Mark
- 7:08Speaker 1: that like I've I've picked up on through now four
- 7:11Speaker 1: seasons of doing this podcast is deer movement in mid
- 7:17Speaker 1: September can largely be dictated by consistent weather. Now, there's
- 7:23Speaker 1: certain like things that you hear, like a cold front
- 7:27Speaker 1: will get deer on their feet, or a full moon
- 7:31Speaker 1: will make deer movement worse in the mornings. Meanings like,
- 7:33Speaker 1: there's a lot of general things like that that are
- 7:35Speaker 1: just really widely accepted. And I think this is maybe
- 7:39Speaker 1: one that I haven't heard talked about as much until
- 7:42Speaker 1: he started doing this podcast. And then two years ago
- 7:45Speaker 1: in late September, I killed my biggest buck ever with
- 7:47Speaker 1: my bow and that was kind of the same case.
- 7:49Speaker 1: It was like a week straight of the same wind,
- 7:52Speaker 1: no temperature fluctuations. And then on this episode again it
- 7:56Speaker 1: came up where guys were talking about how they were
- 7:58Speaker 1: excited for the come week because there was that consistent
- 8:02Speaker 1: weather that have been building. Is that something that you've
- 8:05Speaker 1: heard people discussed or talked about for hunting in September. Well,
- 8:09Speaker 1: will clarify this for me, because the thing I have
- 8:13Speaker 1: heard from a couple of people, not a lot, but
- 8:16Speaker 1: Mark Drewy in particular talks about this is that when
- 8:19Speaker 1: you get a long period of consistent weather, the first
- 8:22Speaker 1: day it breaks, the first day that change happens is
- 8:26Speaker 1: when you see that bumping movement. So if you were
- 8:29Speaker 1: to have four or five days of the same when
- 8:33Speaker 1: stuff stagnates, the longer something stagnates, it builds up the
- 8:37Speaker 1: potential boost that you'll get as soon as it changes.
- 8:40Speaker 1: That's one of the theories I've heard is that what
- 8:42Speaker 1: you're speaking to or are you saying that these guys
- 8:44Speaker 1: are saying that they have better hunts during the stagnant,
- 8:49Speaker 1: similar consistent weather. Yeah, I'm referring to like when you
- 8:53Speaker 1: get four or five days of consistent weather that some
- 8:57Speaker 1: of these people we've talked to you in this episode
- 8:59Speaker 1: in past episod zodes uh like to see that in
- 9:03Speaker 1: the forecast. And I don't know the reasoning or if
- 9:05Speaker 1: they can even justify or I can justify it. Maybe
- 9:08Speaker 1: it said it like kind of gets them back in
- 9:10Speaker 1: that summer pattern in mid September, after it's kind of
- 9:14Speaker 1: gone away. I don't know what it is, um, but
- 9:17Speaker 1: it's something now that's come up over a couple of
- 9:19Speaker 1: seasons of doing this podcast. Interesting. I mean, the one
- 9:23Speaker 1: thing that comes to mind is it's simply is beneficial
- 9:27Speaker 1: from a hunting standpoint as the hunter, because if you've
- 9:30Speaker 1: got four or five days of a consistent wind direction,
- 9:33Speaker 1: you have four or five days where deer might be
- 9:35Speaker 1: doing something that you can take an advantage of in
- 9:38Speaker 1: the same way, right, Because it sucks if you see
- 9:41Speaker 1: a buck do something for two nights with a west
- 9:43Speaker 1: wind and then you can finally hunt him, but then
- 9:45Speaker 1: all of a sudden it's east wind, you know. But
- 9:47Speaker 1: if you have five days straight of west's, then you
- 9:50Speaker 1: have the opportunity to make a move with that similar window. Actually,
- 9:54Speaker 1: I mean, that's one thing I can think of that
- 9:56Speaker 1: would make that beneficial. But I'm intrigued to hear from
- 9:59Speaker 1: these people about what they're seeing. Yeah, I think that's
- 10:03Speaker 1: that's maybe the best observation on this theory. Mark that
- 10:06Speaker 1: if if you are watching a bean field and there's
- 10:09Speaker 1: five days of south winds and you see this deer
- 10:12Speaker 1: doing this on nights too, and nights three, then you're
- 10:15Speaker 1: probably gonna see him there in night's four and five,
- 10:17Speaker 1: And and in your head that means that the buck
- 10:20Speaker 1: moon is better if you're seeing the same thing. So
- 10:23Speaker 1: maybe not in reality that the deer movement is better,
- 10:26Speaker 1: but it certainly is at a haunters advantage that perception. Yeah,
- 10:30Speaker 1: that makes sense. Well, I would say we should just
- 10:35Speaker 1: get into it because I'm not deer hunting right now,
- 10:38Speaker 1: so I just need to vicariously live through some folks
- 10:41Speaker 1: who are. And I know we've got four guys here
- 10:43Speaker 1: that can help me do that. So do you want
- 10:46Speaker 1: to take up here, Spencer, Yes, And I want to
- 10:48Speaker 1: plug something for the end of the podcast. I want
- 10:50Speaker 1: to stick around and listen because Hunter Forbes in Kentucky,
- 10:54Speaker 1: uh just recovered a deer this afternoon that one of
- 10:57Speaker 1: his clients hit last evening and it's probably the most
- 11:01Speaker 1: unique recovery store I've ever heard. Um, So stay tuned
- 11:04Speaker 1: for that, listen to the whole podcast. Oh and I
- 11:07Speaker 1: thought you're gonna plug something else, and I will plug
- 11:09Speaker 1: this other something else. Um. If you have not yet
- 11:13Speaker 1: signed up for our new White Tail weekly newsletter, you

- 12:29Speaker 1: before we move on, and I tell you guys about

- 12:48Speaker 1: cheap and sell it. So go over to the meat

- 13:10Speaker 1: the time you hear this ad, you probably have less
- 13:13Speaker 1: than twenty four hours, So head over the media dot
- 13:15Speaker 1: com check out those sales are and joining us on
- 13:18Speaker 1: the line. First is Cody Hesseltine from Maryland. Now, Cody
- 13:22Speaker 1: in Maryland, what would you say the bucket activity is
- 13:24Speaker 1: ben lately on a scale of one to ten for
- 13:27Speaker 1: our opener was pretty good. Um, I would probably give
- 13:30Speaker 1: it a seven eight out of ten. On Saturday, Friday
- 13:34Speaker 1: was pretty slow because you had the hurricane come through
- 13:36Speaker 1: with some some high winds and it kind of laid
- 13:38Speaker 1: the deer down their real skittish. But you know Saturday
- 13:41Speaker 1: after that I pass the deer really moved. Well. No,
- 13:44Speaker 1: I know, you just killed a buck there in Maryland.
- 13:46Speaker 1: Tell us a little bit about that setup. Um, so
- 13:49Speaker 1: I'm that set up I was. I was kind of
- 13:50Speaker 1: hunting in a transition area, something just off the edge
- 13:53Speaker 1: of betting where these deer come outs a thicket, I mean,
- 13:55Speaker 1: transitioning through it going to a big white up flat
- 13:59Speaker 1: um as a white us to just started dropping it
- 14:01Speaker 1: within the last week and a half or so. So
- 14:03Speaker 1: is that a food source that you think is going
- 14:05Speaker 1: to be pretty consistent throughout the all of September here
- 14:08Speaker 1: or is that a short window where deer you're going
- 14:10Speaker 1: to be hitting that. No, it'll be pretty consistent throughout
- 14:13Speaker 1: the month. They're just starting to drop now, They're they're
- 14:16Speaker 1: not a lot coming down. I think in the next
- 14:19Speaker 1: week the two more should start falling. That should be
- 14:21Speaker 1: a bigger food source for the deer as an urban
- 14:25Speaker 1: bow hunter. What are the food sources this time of
- 14:27Speaker 1: year are you looking for? Um? I hunt a little
- 14:31Speaker 1: bit on the edge of farmland. Two. So the sugbeans
- 14:34Speaker 1: are still pretty grand, and now the deer still really
- 14:36Speaker 1: going to feed on those. The white oaks and some
- 14:40Speaker 1: of the burrows are really what I tend to key on,
- 14:42Speaker 1: trying to get up some most flash the deer coming
- 14:43Speaker 1: out and these open flash if he at night. Do
- 14:47Speaker 1: you notice any differences for how long or how short
- 14:51Speaker 1: those urban deer hold their summer patterns versus the ones
- 14:54Speaker 1: that are in more of your typical farm country. I
- 14:57Speaker 1: don't really know the difference between the urban far arm deer.
- 15:00Speaker 1: It really seems here once the white oaks start following,
- 15:03Speaker 1: that really becomes their preferred source of food and that
- 15:06Speaker 1: they'll go right to that. So I don't really see
- 15:08Speaker 1: too much of a change in patterns from the urban
- 15:10Speaker 1: and farm deer as summer. What are you seeing right
- 15:14Speaker 1: now for bachelor groups or bucks still traveling together at
- 15:17Speaker 1: this point? Yeah, for the most part, they're still traveling together.
- 15:20Speaker 1: They're starting to break up a little best seeing some
- 15:22Speaker 1: of the mature bucks that shed their velot, they're starting
- 15:25Speaker 1: to hang out by themselves now, but for the most part,
- 15:27Speaker 1: most of deer still battered up in groups of four
- 15:29Speaker 1: or five. And are you seeing any signmaking at this
- 15:33Speaker 1: point in Maryland or do you think it's still too early? Um?
- 15:36Speaker 1: Too early? I mean I seem a little bit just
- 15:38Speaker 1: some of the community scrapes that are open year round
- 15:40Speaker 1: though they're still being hit. But I haven't seen any
- 15:42Speaker 1: rubs or anything like that happen. Cody, what is your
- 15:45Speaker 1: trail camp strategy this time of year then, and how
- 15:48Speaker 1: is that going to change throughout the month of September.
- 15:51Speaker 1: Right now, I'm really starting to move a lot of
- 15:53Speaker 1: them onto the white Oak flats, trying to you know,
- 15:56Speaker 1: figure out which which trees are dropping, a lot of
- 15:58Speaker 1: acorns moving in there and hard see what what new
- 16:01Speaker 1: deer moving into those areas. Um for that right now,
- 16:04Speaker 1: and then also kind of moving some awesome some soybean
- 16:07Speaker 1: fields onto some of the community scrapes. I know the
- 16:11Speaker 1: buck that you killed was still in velvet, but are
- 16:14Speaker 1: you still seeing a lot of those books that have
- 16:16Speaker 1: fazzy antlers? Yeah, I would say right now it's probably
- 16:18Speaker 1: maybe still in velvet. And notice we opened there on
- 16:22Speaker 1: the sixth and I would say probably semi fibers on
- 16:25Speaker 1: the bucks from Velvet Ben. But now it dropped down
- 16:28Speaker 1: the four they're really starting to shed quick now going forward.
- 16:31Speaker 1: Then in this next week or so, what do you
- 16:33Speaker 1: think that bucket activity is going to be on a
- 16:35Speaker 1: scale of one to ten in Maryland? We got a
- 16:38Speaker 1: cold front coming in Friday, so I think it's gonna
- 16:41Speaker 1: ramp up. We got kind of warmed up now back
- 16:43Speaker 1: up into the nineties. They're supposed to drop up down
- 16:45Speaker 1: into the seventies. So with that twenty degree tempt drops
- 16:48Speaker 1: there on Friday, I think the buck Act two is
- 16:50Speaker 1: going to stay pretty good right around are Cody will
- 16:53Speaker 1: congrats on the awesome deer and thanks for joining me.
- 16:56Speaker 1: Thank you all and joining us on the line. Next
- 16:59Speaker 1: is Alex Colm Stock from White Tailed d NA who
- 17:02Speaker 1: was hunting in South Dakota. Now Alex in South Dakota.
- 17:05Speaker 1: What would you say the buck activities man lately on
- 17:07Speaker 1: the scale of one to tend Yeah, I would say
- 17:10Speaker 1: when I was there was probably about three. And the
- 17:12Speaker 1: only reason I really wouldn't put it out of one
- 17:14Speaker 1: was because the first night we saw two really nice bucks,
- 17:18Speaker 1: but it was on the walkout after shooting hours. Um.
- 17:21Speaker 1: Other than that, we really didn't see any bucks and
- 17:24Speaker 1: deer activity as in general was just really slow. Now,
- 17:27Speaker 1: you were hunting the opener on public land there in
- 17:31Speaker 1: South Dakota. Do you think that contributed to why you
- 17:34Speaker 1: didn't see much? Do you think there was just not
- 17:37Speaker 1: much good dear movement across the board? Yeah? I think
- 17:40Speaker 1: with the weather this wasn't that good. Uh, deer movement
- 17:43Speaker 1: across the board. Um, it was really hot. It was
- 17:46Speaker 1: you know, pushing nineties. With the Humanity I think it
- 17:49Speaker 1: said it was, you know, about four, So I don't
- 17:52Speaker 1: think the weather I was doing as much favors there.
- 17:55Speaker 1: So what were your setups then? Knowing that it was
- 17:57Speaker 1: really hot and humid, we were on the public land
- 18:01Speaker 1: that we were on, we were trying to get tight
- 18:03Speaker 1: to bedding um where we were hunting. We had pictures
- 18:06Speaker 1: of bucks moving um through midday when they would show up,
- 18:11Speaker 1: so we kind of knew we were close to where
- 18:12Speaker 1: they were bedded and we were hoping they would kind
- 18:15Speaker 1: of get up there right in the last half hour
- 18:17Speaker 1: before they head out to the crops, and uh, they
- 18:19Speaker 1: just just wouldn't show. So that was kind of our
- 18:21Speaker 1: game plan. Now, the great planes had a lot of
- 18:25Speaker 1: rain this spring and summer, so there's plenty of water available.
- 18:28Speaker 1: Did that factor into your guys decision making it all?
- 18:32Speaker 1: It didn't completely factor entire decision making just because there
- 18:35Speaker 1: wasn't any water water sources around, But like you said,
- 18:39Speaker 1: it was the being so wet out there. There was
- 18:40Speaker 1: water just available anywhere, So even if there was, we
- 18:43Speaker 1: probably wouldn't have from the deer that you did see,
- 18:47Speaker 1: we're also still holding velvet or must bucks hard horned
- 18:50Speaker 1: at this point. We saw a mix. So there were
- 18:53Speaker 1: some smaller bucks that we saw in velvet and we're
- 18:56Speaker 1: getting pictures and bucks still in velvet um. But the
- 18:59Speaker 1: night that well, those two bucks on the walkout they
- 19:01Speaker 1: were they were both horn already, and that would have
- 19:04Speaker 1: been on September two. How about bachelor groups? Were bucks
- 19:08Speaker 1: still traveling together? It appeared that they were still traveling together.
- 19:12Speaker 1: I figured they probably would have been for at least
- 19:14Speaker 1: another week. So based on what we were seeing, what
- 19:17Speaker 1: do you think the best food source to haunt this
- 19:20Speaker 1: time of year would be in that area? Were you
- 19:22Speaker 1: looking at some big egg? Where is there's some natural
- 19:25Speaker 1: brows available as well? Yeah? Out there it seemed like
- 19:29Speaker 1: they were heading out to alfalfa fields at night. We
- 19:32Speaker 1: were all the crops that we had around with the
- 19:34Speaker 1: corner and salfa. Um seeing deer driving around at the
- 19:38Speaker 1: end of the night, um, or those deer that we
- 19:40Speaker 1: saw after dark, we're in alfalfa field, so that kind
- 19:43Speaker 1: of seemed to be the primary food source. Now, when
- 19:46Speaker 1: you only have a short window like that and you're
- 19:48Speaker 1: traveling boat hunting on public land, did you consider any
- 19:51Speaker 1: morning setups at all? Yeah, we actually hunted two mornings. Um.
- 19:56Speaker 1: We got it super early, really tight again to bedding,
- 20:00Speaker 1: and the one more was our best hunt. We saw
- 20:04Speaker 1: probably a two or three year old buck that had
- 20:07Speaker 1: some really good genetics and a few doughs coming through.
- 20:09Speaker 1: But even though deer came through within probably the first
- 20:12Speaker 1: ten ten minutes of a legal shooting night. So if
- 20:16Speaker 1: it hadn't been so hot there in South Dakota in
- 20:19Speaker 1: the four or five days you had to hunt, would
- 20:21Speaker 1: have that changed your strategies? Yeah, I think we would
- 20:24Speaker 1: have probably gone with the same strategy, but it would
- 20:28Speaker 1: have probably gave us a better chance for these those
- 20:30Speaker 1: mature lucks be getting out of their beds, maybe a
- 20:32Speaker 1: little early headed to the food, being able to cut
- 20:35Speaker 1: them off in those last hour or so of light,
- 20:40Speaker 1: being in close to their bedding like you were. Did
- 20:42Speaker 1: you come across any signmaking I know what's really early,
- 20:46Speaker 1: but it sounds like you were tight on them the timber,
- 20:47Speaker 1: so maybe you saw some rubs or scrapes as soon. Yeah,
- 20:51Speaker 1: we did not run any across any rubs or scrapes,
- 20:54Speaker 1: So I don't know if we just weren't tight enough,
- 20:56Speaker 1: or if if we just weren't in the exact right
- 20:59Speaker 1: spot per se. Going forward. Then in the sext week
- 21:02Speaker 1: or so, what do you think that bucket activity is
- 21:04Speaker 1: going to be on a scale of one to ten
- 21:06Speaker 1: in South Dakota. I'd probably put it still pretty low.
- 21:10Speaker 1: When I had left, Uh, the outlook for the weather
- 21:13Speaker 1: was still pretty warm, and unless you get a significant
- 21:15Speaker 1: temperature temperature drop, I would put it probably around the
- 21:18Speaker 1: four or five. Alright, Alex Well, I hope you get
- 21:21Speaker 1: a chance to return. Good luck with the rest of
- 21:23Speaker 1: your season, and thanks for joining me. All right, thanks
- 21:25Speaker 1: Spencer are in joining us on the line. Next is
- 21:29Speaker 1: Brandon's story from Florida from Story Hunts Now. Brandon in Florida,
- 21:35Speaker 1: what would you say the bucket activity has been lately
- 21:37Speaker 1: on a scale of one to ten. I'd say here
- 21:40Speaker 1: in the past week, we're probably at about a six
- 21:42Speaker 1: out of ten right now, which should be increasing with
- 21:44Speaker 1: the full moon coming up here. So what phase of
- 21:48Speaker 1: the rut are you experiencing right now in South Florida? UM,
- 21:52Speaker 1: In the south zone south of Highway seventy, we've seen
- 21:55Speaker 1: really intense running actually from the very beginning of August. UM.
- 21:59Speaker 1: It really peaked up in the mid August when the
- 22:01Speaker 1: full moon hit then and it seemed to slow back
- 22:04Speaker 1: down a little, which I think they'll increase UM as
- 22:06Speaker 1: the full moon coming there and then on the north
- 22:10Speaker 1: side of seventy and centrals on fixing and open this weekend. UM,
- 22:14Speaker 1: we've noticed that the bucks have really broken out of
- 22:16Speaker 1: their bachelor groups a couple of weeks ago, and they're
- 22:18Speaker 1: starting to make some scrapes and UM lease and signed
- 22:22Speaker 1: and break off into their areas. So I would assume
- 22:24Speaker 1: that the Central's on rut is gonna probably really get
- 22:27Speaker 1: fired up here in the next couple of days when
- 22:29Speaker 1: the full moon hits as well. With that full moon coming,
- 22:32Speaker 1: how does that change the strategies for your clients? UM?
- 22:36Speaker 1: It really just as much as you can stay in
- 22:38Speaker 1: the tree stand with the full moon, because you don't
- 22:40Speaker 1: really know when they're gonna show their face, but they
- 22:41Speaker 1: show their face a lot more during the daylight around
- 22:44Speaker 1: that time. It seems like they, um, not only are
- 22:47Speaker 1: you know, in the daylight a lot more, there are
- 22:49Speaker 1: a lot more serious in intents into the rut. You
- 22:52Speaker 1: see a lot more fighting um songs hanging out as
- 22:55Speaker 1: their cruising a lot mid day. So you really just
- 22:57Speaker 1: have to kind of get where you know, the does
- 22:59Speaker 1: are out on the camera lately, and I hope you
- 23:02Speaker 1: can get the right buck to pass by at the
- 23:03Speaker 1: right time. Now, Hurricane Dorian didn't directly hit you guys,
- 23:07Speaker 1: but it certainly brought some weather. How did that affect
- 23:09Speaker 1: dear movement? Um, we've definitely seen the increase in deer
- 23:13Speaker 1: movement for the two or three days before Dorian got
- 23:16Speaker 1: really close to us. Luckily it did turn and go
- 23:18Speaker 1: up the coast. Um, it seemed like for the day
- 23:22Speaker 1: or two that it was really you know, close to
- 23:24Speaker 1: us there and some of the winds and rain were
- 23:25Speaker 1: coming in that there was a shut down on some
- 23:27Speaker 1: of the cameras that we got to where there was
- 23:29Speaker 1: not as much dear movement at all, So it seems
- 23:31Speaker 1: like they really loaded up before the storm shut down
- 23:34Speaker 1: a couple of days when it was close, and then afterwards, um,
- 23:37Speaker 1: we started seeing the deer activity picking back up along
- 23:39Speaker 1: with all the birds that are kind of left and
- 23:41Speaker 1: not everything got back to normal. Typically, if it was
- 23:44Speaker 1: at this stage that brought in mid in the Midwest,
- 23:46Speaker 1: hunters would be using calling and decoys and strategies like
- 23:50Speaker 1: that to bring the deer to them. Is that something
- 23:53Speaker 1: that you guys utilized in South Florida? Yes? Or um,
- 23:57Speaker 1: you know, I thought of the Midwest and Florida and
- 24:00Speaker 1: I have does seem like some of the Midwest states
- 24:02Speaker 1: you get a little better response with the calling and all.
- 24:05Speaker 1: But it's I think with any state, the right place
- 24:07Speaker 1: at the right time, with the right call is gonna
- 24:09Speaker 1: make you know the deer come to you. So there
- 24:11Speaker 1: is you know, it is effective right now with the
- 24:13Speaker 1: deer on their feet if you can, you know, hit
- 24:15Speaker 1: a ground call at the right time, or hit some
- 24:17Speaker 1: rattling horns while their cruise and then not on the
- 24:19Speaker 1: hot dough and get on the turn and come towards
- 24:20Speaker 1: your area a little more so those um, if you
- 24:23Speaker 1: know what area you're in, you know a bus, you
- 24:25Speaker 1: know we're kind of in that area, and you've got
- 24:26Speaker 1: some dominant box. I think calling right now is very effective.
- 24:29Speaker 1: What food sources are hunters now focused on? And what
- 24:33Speaker 1: food sources are those deer hitting? UM? A lot of
- 24:35Speaker 1: our main food sources down here is you know, natural
- 24:38Speaker 1: stuff that i'd say the orange grows people setting up
- 24:40Speaker 1: off the orange grows. Now. Besides that, we have a
- 24:43Speaker 1: lot of protein feeders and you know spin feeders down here,
- 24:46Speaker 1: branches have on them for you know, multiple different animals, um.
- 24:50Speaker 1: And then people are also planting a lot of food plots.
- 24:52Speaker 1: If you had your earlier food plots in where you
- 24:54Speaker 1: have your ashion nominee some clover, some peas growing, that'll
- 24:57Speaker 1: be your food sources. They're mainly hitting right now with
- 25:00Speaker 1: the rut going on in your area. Are you seeing
- 25:02Speaker 1: a lot of signmaking right now? And how do you
- 25:05Speaker 1: use that? Yeah, we're seeing a lot of signs um
- 25:08Speaker 1: popping up in the centrals on now because they're breaking
- 25:10Speaker 1: off and starting to mark their territories. UM. As the
- 25:12Speaker 1: full moon hits and they actually locked into these does
- 25:15Speaker 1: the signs should die down? UM? You usually see a
- 25:17Speaker 1: lot of signs if you want to call it pre rut.
- 25:20Speaker 1: Different people have different you know, views on what they
- 25:22Speaker 1: call rutton pre rut. But before they really start breeding
- 25:24Speaker 1: and chasing the dose is when they make a lot
- 25:26Speaker 1: of sign. As soon as the sign starts kind of
- 25:28Speaker 1: dying down. You know this when they're actually locked into
- 25:29Speaker 1: their dos. And I would say, starting this weekend and
- 25:32Speaker 1: next week, you're gonna start seeing less sign and more
- 25:34Speaker 1: chasing going forward. Then in six week or so, what
- 25:37Speaker 1: do you think that bucket TV is going to be
- 25:39Speaker 1: on a scale of one to ten Florida. I would
- 25:42Speaker 1: say by the full moon um coming up by this weekend,
- 25:45Speaker 1: it's gonna be about a nine out of ten or
- 25:47Speaker 1: ten out of ten um with the timing coming off
- 25:50Speaker 1: the backside of Dorrian and seeing where the rut's been
- 25:53Speaker 1: down south compared to where these bucks are kind of
- 25:55Speaker 1: breaking up now, they're about exactly where the deer were
- 25:58Speaker 1: down south before the full moon hit there. So I
- 26:00Speaker 1: expected it to be pretty high night our tent out
- 26:02Speaker 1: of town. All right, Brandon, Well, good luck to you
- 26:04Speaker 1: and the hunters. Are you having camp? Thanks for joining me, awesome,
- 26:07Speaker 1: appreciate it, ma'am. Alright and joining us on the line
- 26:10Speaker 1: next is Hunter Forbes from Southern White Tail Outfitters in Kentucky.
- 26:15Speaker 1: Now Hunter in Kentucky. What would you say the bucket
- 26:17Speaker 1: activity has been lately on a scale of one to ten,
- 26:21Speaker 1: and I M gonna go with a seven, seven out
- 26:24Speaker 1: of ten. Yeah, we've got a south wind the past
- 26:26Speaker 1: couple of days and put them back in their summer patterns,
- 26:28Speaker 1: it seems like. And it's been pretty good. Um, have
- 26:32Speaker 1: some hunters killing deer yesterday evening and artist seeing new
- 26:35Speaker 1: this afternoon. So yeah, I'm gonna give it a seven
- 26:38Speaker 1: these last couple of nights. What have those setups been like? Man?
- 26:43Speaker 1: So typically everyone's targeting beans this time of year, and
- 26:46Speaker 1: here lately the corn's been getting shaled, so all these
- 26:49Speaker 1: first cut corn fields has really drawn the deer in. Um.
- 26:52Speaker 1: It seems like the majority of the deer are betting
- 26:54Speaker 1: in the beans and coming out to the corn fields.
- 26:57Speaker 1: So it's kind of reverse um, which she would be
- 26:59Speaker 1: thinking can but everything's leaving the beans and come into
- 27:02Speaker 1: the fresh cut corn field. So that's pretty much bet
- 27:05Speaker 1: our setups and been working out here lately. So is
- 27:07Speaker 1: that a pattern that you think is going to last
- 27:09Speaker 1: for a while or is that going to be short lived? Well,
- 27:12Speaker 1: it's kind of on a perform basis on when the
- 27:15Speaker 1: corn is gonna be coming out. So as soon as
- 27:18Speaker 1: it comes out, you know, it may be like that
- 27:20Speaker 1: for a couple of weeks here. Um. But if you're
- 27:23Speaker 1: you know, corn hadn't came out yet, then you're not
- 27:25Speaker 1: seeing that. Um. And on all those farms which just
- 27:28Speaker 1: mainly been hunting over you can paint in kentuckis that
- 27:30Speaker 1: mainly hunting over corn poles? Do you have any strategies
- 27:34Speaker 1: for killing those bucks that bed out in egg field,
- 27:37Speaker 1: like say they bet in a bean field and they
- 27:39Speaker 1: also feed in a bean field. Do you have any
- 27:41Speaker 1: strategies for killing those deer? Or they just too hard
- 27:44Speaker 1: to get to right now? It's about access this time
- 27:48Speaker 1: of year. Um, if you can't get into him, you
- 27:50Speaker 1: work you're gonna speak him. You know, it's probably the case.
- 27:54Speaker 1: So if you can have a you know, a sit
- 27:56Speaker 1: and to be able to watch them from afar and
- 27:57Speaker 1: come up with a game plan more than like they're
- 28:00Speaker 1: going to be doing the same thing the day after
- 28:02Speaker 1: day given constant weather, consistent weather and so over the
- 28:07Speaker 1: weekend we struggled a little bit because we went from
- 28:09Speaker 1: the south wind to a north wind, and those north
- 28:12Speaker 1: wind days we just weren't seeing the deer like we
- 28:14Speaker 1: we're on camera. Um. But as of yesterday it swapped
- 28:18Speaker 1: came out of south again and we're back to our
- 28:20Speaker 1: normal summer patterns and it's been good so far. I'm
- 28:23Speaker 1: seeing quite a few deer on cameras and moving in daylight,
- 28:26Speaker 1: and hopefully we'll get a few more down this week.
- 28:29Speaker 1: So when you say that these deer are back to
- 28:31Speaker 1: their summer patterns, does that mean that you catch a
- 28:33Speaker 1: lot of bucks traveling and bachelor groups. Yeah, there's some
- 28:37Speaker 1: bachelor groups. They're just starting to shed their velvet. Some
- 28:39Speaker 1: are right now, and say we're probably sitting on as
- 28:41Speaker 1: far as the ones that have and haven't. Every day
- 28:43Speaker 1: we're losing you. On those north one days, we got
- 28:45Speaker 1: a little bit cooler force. Deer seem to be moving
- 28:48Speaker 1: like early morning, right at first light, which we don't
- 28:50Speaker 1: hunt the morning's early season. We just stick through the afternoons,
- 28:53Speaker 1: you know, afraid to bump in deer out over the
- 28:54Speaker 1: food sources getting into We didn't really worked out for
- 28:56Speaker 1: our hunting sylm as tours killing this deer, but not
- 29:00Speaker 1: we're seeing them in the afternoons. Um. We've been kind
- 29:02Speaker 1: of slowly working our way in as far as sitting
- 29:04Speaker 1: and seeing them from a couple hundred yards and then
- 29:07Speaker 1: hanging and hunting them, you know, wherever we saw them
- 29:10Speaker 1: come out from. So that's Prood's been working the best
- 29:12Speaker 1: for us and doing that on that they're being shield like.
- 29:15Speaker 1: Combines are just getting out of the field and we're
- 29:17Speaker 1: going right behind them. Um can drive the truck all
- 29:19Speaker 1: the way up to it because they're used to the
- 29:21Speaker 1: farm equipment. And before those combines are on the field,
- 29:23Speaker 1: we gotta stand hung and hunters ready to go hunting.
- 29:26Speaker 1: When you have so many destination food sources like you
- 29:30Speaker 1: have on your properties there in Kentucky, do you concern
- 29:33Speaker 1: yourself with water at all or are you always focused
- 29:35Speaker 1: on that egg? Yes, definitely about water. We're really really
- 29:39Speaker 1: dry right now, UM, I'd say, not really constraining water
- 29:43Speaker 1: as far as where we're hunting, but as far as
- 29:46Speaker 1: what farms are going to have shooter bucks on it
- 29:49Speaker 1: right now. If we don't have water somewhere close, we're
- 29:51Speaker 1: probably not going to have those deer that we're trying
- 29:53Speaker 1: to hunt. So they're they're definitely hanging around it, you know,
- 29:56Speaker 1: to some degree, but we're not hunting over them. On
- 30:00Speaker 1: a different note, I saw on Instagram today that you
- 30:03Speaker 1: guys recovered a buck that it seemed like you had
- 30:06Speaker 1: lost hope on to find this deer that a hunter
- 30:09Speaker 1: had just hit. It's a really cool story. Yeah, So
- 30:12Speaker 1: last night at last light, we had a shot on
- 30:14Speaker 1: a deer and a little bit you know, too far forward,
- 30:16Speaker 1: further than we would like. Um, we gave him four
- 30:20Speaker 1: hours and followed up. We happened to bump the deer,
- 30:24Speaker 1: so we came out. Um, he looked like he was
- 30:26Speaker 1: hit pretty bad, and we could hear Tardy selling clothes
- 30:29Speaker 1: and we're worried that they were going to get to him.
- 30:31Speaker 1: And by the morning we came back in this morning
- 30:34Speaker 1: and we felt blood for posted nine yards. Um, the
- 30:37Speaker 1: last spot kind of ended out of being filled and
- 30:40Speaker 1: there's several trails going through and we walked as far
- 30:43Speaker 1: as we could, but we're talking bean's chest and that
- 30:45Speaker 1: ki super tall. You can't really see you right through it.
- 30:48Speaker 1: So I do a lot of scouting with the drone
- 30:51Speaker 1: as far as seeing where deer bedding and how they're
- 30:53Speaker 1: using this trails going to the fields and stuff. And
- 30:56Speaker 1: so grabbed the drone and I didn't have to for
- 31:00Speaker 1: sixty seconds. It was plain as day. Um, once we
- 31:03Speaker 1: got it up in the air, you can see kind
- 31:05Speaker 1: of how the cardy is. I guess um ran him
- 31:08Speaker 1: into the beans because a lot of beans were knocked over.
- 31:11Speaker 1: We're able to recover him so pretty neat the first time.
- 31:14Speaker 1: For me, you don't think you'd recovered that deer otherwise,
- 31:18Speaker 1: I really don't. I really don't. We were trying to
- 31:21Speaker 1: get ahold a dog and um, a lot of dogs.
- 31:23Speaker 1: Was this hot, you know, it's pretty hard to work.
- 31:26Speaker 1: We actually found him around I guess one or two o'clock.
- 31:29Speaker 1: It was ninety six degrees out. We weren't able to
- 31:32Speaker 1: save much of the meat at all. The cardies have
- 31:34Speaker 1: done got most of him, so it was just just
- 31:37Speaker 1: a recovery. But we're able to do, you know, thanks
- 31:39Speaker 1: to that drone. That's a wild story. I'm glad I
- 31:42Speaker 1: had a happy ending. But going forward in this sext
- 31:44Speaker 1: week or so, what do you think that bucket activity
- 31:46Speaker 1: is going to be on the scale of one to
- 31:48Speaker 1: ten in Kentucky. Rather, it looks consistent and consistent whether
