- 0:45Welcome back to the boundary Corner podcast, I am Curtis
- 0:50Wilson, I'm Brian seagull, but if you live here on a Wednesday
- 0:55night we got some there's some drinks.
- 0:58This time we got some some fun stuff to talk about.
- 1:02Especially for Monday night, we have a lot of stuff to talk
- 1:06about drinks this time. Yes.
- 1:08Proudly from Monday night holding the VT food and science
- 1:13technology kuzey, We picked up the swag.
- 1:19Why all sorts of swag from Monday night man, we're going to
- 1:23get that into that on the back end because there's so much to
- 1:25unload their. We forget about a lot of other
- 1:27stuff. If we didn't come, I had a super
- 1:30long day, Ron it takes only about it, man, tell me when I'm
- 1:34done with you guys. This morning going to be in
- 1:38meetings all day and I was and have some family in from out of
- 1:43town and man we did some steaks or heat is on the grill tonight.
- 1:49Right? Homemade peach ice cream.
- 1:51I prefer banana. I lost.
- 1:53He chose ice cream eat. Oh man.
- 1:57So that's some Halifax. You right there, homie?
- 2:01Yeah. It's a great thing but after all
- 2:21that after my crazy day and I know you've been busy too.
- 2:25I completely missed her. Jim Phillips ACC press
- 2:28conference so big guy. The floor is yours to inform me
- 2:33of what the hell happened? Well, Jim Phillips got up there
- 2:38and he kind of sang Kumbaya for a little bit.
- 2:44He's trying to talk about the all the neighborhood should be
- 2:49able to have success and we should all do what's right for
- 2:54the kids and keep the kids in mind.
- 2:56And you know, It was kind of like there was some decent
- 3:03points in there, but it was mostly kind of fluff in
- 3:05bullshit. I mean, I think the overarching
- 3:09theme is that, you know, he is keeping options open, whatever.
- 3:12That means. Hopefully, that means adding
- 3:16members and renegotiating the meteorites in terms of the, the,
- 3:23the number. Okay?
- 3:25We need to be closer to that 40 mil versus that lower end of the
- 3:2930s. That's what needs to happen.
- 3:34I don't know if that's going to be what ultimately comes through
- 3:37with this. But I feel like this was a talk
- 3:44that if it was had five years ago, it might have landed
- 3:48better. But it's one of those things
- 3:51where? Here's here's how things it's
- 3:55the should be versus the reality, right?
- 3:57So right now he's saying this is how things should be, but but in
- 4:01reality, they're not. So if you're not addressing
- 4:03reality, it doesn't really matter how things should be.
- 4:08I need someone that's having practical Solutions not Pie in
- 4:11the Sky dreams of what this thing should be.
- 4:14I think we're beyond that at this point.
- 4:16This ain't college football in Utopia anymore.
- 4:20This is what it sounds like to me.
- 4:21Yeah. That ship has sailed loving.
- 4:23It's gone. You know, we're talking about it
- 4:25being driven by money and that's not a good thing.
- 4:29It's been driven by money for over a decade.
- 4:32Really, if we're talking about it for real started, 30 years
- 4:35ago, and it's been a rocket ship, the last decade there in
- 4:41there. It's not slowing down.
- 4:43No, it's not. It would, if you did, if you
- 4:45think it's slowing down, you're being naive, you're being super
- 4:48nice. Well, thank you for that.
- 4:50So it sounds like I didn't miss much, but an overarching theme
- 4:54of either he's playing nice or he has no clue and I hope it's
- 4:59the first not the second for the Hokie sake.
- 5:02I'm hoping he's saying things publicly but but doing what
- 5:06needs to be done on the back end, we will be saying the nice
- 5:09stuff publicly and just getting and pulling out all the women.
- 5:13I'm hoping he learned something from the Big Ten last year and
- 5:16that they said the right shit. But then in the meantime, they
- 5:19were negotiating Dating getting to schools from the Pac-12 from
- 5:24the alliance to join their conference table.
- 5:28They pulled the knives and just started sticking people left and
- 5:31right. Well Brian let's talk.
- 5:32We were talking about this real quick.
- 5:36Can or the Big Ten or the Big 12.
- 5:39The Big Ten in the SEC again long day for me.
- 5:42So I stumbled a night y'all. It is what it is.
- 5:45The only way to the ACC can get out of Grants of right.
- 5:47Deal is to have 18 s. Correct date not 784 a full
- 5:54majority basically. Leave the conference Are there
- 5:5918 s that are attractive enough to the Big Ten in the SEC where
- 6:05they would do that? I think combined.
- 6:09Yes but I don't there's the problem is there's a lot of
- 6:12coordination it'll happen to have to happen because you would
- 6:15have to essentially have the SEC and Big Ten colluding to have
- 6:21all these schools pull out of the ACC at the same time?
- 6:24Well, I don't think the FED would like that.
- 6:27That's That's someone that does that does sound, you know, I
- 6:33don't think that's above board but mean a lot of stuff that
- 6:36goes down isn't above board. Hell, yeah, whether it's the
- 6:41basically legal insider trading that pretty much every
- 6:45Congressman does or any other, you know, stuff that goes down
- 6:48like that. So, I mean, I could see it
- 6:51happening. I don't know if it will happen
- 6:53right now. The grant of rights is the
- 6:55biggest firewall that the ACC As and it's a pretty good one.
- 7:01As long as they don't have a teens that are willing to pull
- 7:04out at one time and I mean, when you look at it, there are
- 7:09potentially a that could go if the Big Ten and SEC tried to
- 7:14move all at one time. And if they don't do that, then
- 7:17it's going to be piecemeal and it won't be enough to get a
- 7:22grant of rights in which case, I don't think the ACC those
- 7:25dissolves until the end of that. Period.
- 7:28Well, I don't think one period. I don't think it's the end of
- 7:31the period I don't, but I don't think it's 14 years away because
- 7:3414 years. I don't think they, I don't
- 7:37think they pull out any earlier than two or three years ahead of
- 7:39that though. Yeah, so I mean, we're talking
- 7:42that's a decade so because because, if we're talking about
- 7:46that, because with grant of rights is essentially saying,
- 7:49I'm picking up this conference, I've already paid the new
- 7:52conference or the school is already going to pay the extra
- 7:54departure fee. Which is 100 top of that.
- 7:58You cannot broadcast the rights for that those games, unless you
- 8:02pay it unless you pay us. Yeah, so that's the big sticking
- 8:07point is that what's the point of moving early, especially
- 8:11earlier, than one or two years, unless you're willing to swallow
- 8:15that? And what's the point of the SEC?
- 8:18Or the Big Ten to, even pull the trigger on that they could just
- 8:21say with the elite conferences, right now, right?
- 8:24We have 16 teams were dead. Tian, our way into the playoff.
- 8:28We're probably going to create their own playoff.
- 8:30What's the reasoning for us to go after someone in basically
- 8:34hand, if they go after four teams a piece and basically hand
- 8:40a conference, what probably 400 million dollars a year give or
- 8:46take? Yeah, I mean, it's going to be
- 8:49interesting to see how this shakes out.
- 8:51I think in the in the interest of everybody, it would be better
- 8:54if we had For conferences, when all was said and done instead of
- 8:58two. But if I heading towards to the
- 9:02thing that I'd say, there's, you know, the firewalls protecting
- 9:06the ACC but in some ways it could hurt the ACC because if
- 9:10the SEC decides it wants to start expanding more, And now
- 9:15market-wise it's going to look at the bigger markets.
- 9:18It wants the North Carolina market, it wants the Virginia
- 9:22Market but there's also some markets out west and in the the
- 9:26middle of the country that are in Big 12 and Pac-12 territory
- 9:32that they might Target in the meantime, what does that mean
- 9:35for the ACC long-term do more schools?
- 9:37Get left out long-term because the SEC expands into these other
- 9:42markets in the meantime because they have less.
- 9:45Less of a firewall. So they can actually go and, and
- 9:49poach them a little bit sooner. Well, the Midwest is tough,
- 9:52though. The Midwest to me, the Midwest
- 9:55is dead to the SEC in the Big Ten.
- 10:00The to one, or two teams. Notwithstanding.
- 10:02Yeah, one team to team. Maybe dip.
- 10:06Maybe if you didn't Phillips. Right now, we already said it to
- 10:10me. He has to go, fishes.
- 10:12And obviously, Does geography matter anymore?
- 10:17No, no, you got to go vicious. You got to look at market and
- 10:21you've got to look at good athletic departments and you
- 10:27know to me you just go in the Northeast Corridor of the
- 10:31country. You look at Oregon, you look at
- 10:35u-dub, you look at Stanford. If Cal wants to come maybe right
- 10:40there. You've got the number 9 tv
- 10:43Market the number 70 me market in the number 20 TV Market.
- 10:48Immediately more eyes if the ACC also thinks about it and this is
- 10:53also something you can push to ESPN and others where you can
- 10:56renegotiate your contracts. If you go get those teams,
- 11:01you're almost guaranteed a non 30 slot.
- 11:05So there is an extra football game on that, you're going to be
- 11:09able to pull probably where no other conference can.
- 11:13And if you have extra games, what does that mean?
- 11:16Ryan, No paper, especially if you got it in those markets that
- 11:24are numbered, you know, pretty big markets and actually pretty
- 11:28well-known poet well-respected teams.
- 11:30So, you know, to me, he's just got to go Scorch, the Earth,
- 11:35burn it, get what you can Notre, Dame's a pipe dream because I
- 11:39think Notre Dame's going to get some.
- 11:40I think CBS is after losing the SEC deal.
- 11:45My opinion is CVS. Is going to throw in asinine
- 11:48number at Notre Dame? Yeah, I don't think they get
- 11:51that. What?
- 11:52It was? 70 75 million that they were
- 11:54talking about but I think they get somewhere in the same
- 11:57ballpark with with the big, with the SEC and maybe even above
- 12:03that, depending on, you know, where they end up Landing there.
- 12:07I mean, they're going to get a lot of money.
- 12:08Yeah. They're they're at least going
- 12:10to land somewhere, right? Around 50.
- 12:12Probably higher. Because CBS is going to be
- 12:15starved for college football on Saturday.
- 12:19So they're going to probably get in b.c. in a price War.
- 12:22And if you get them in a price war, I'm going to say that.
- 12:25What do we say to deal with right now?
- 12:27It was 22, 23 24, 24, 20 times. They triple, I think it can be
- 12:36triple. I think it's at least gonna
- 12:38double up, you know, I and they've got they've got the
- 12:42bargaining power right now, because they've got the layer.
- 12:46All the, all the numbers are going up and they got the
- 12:48leverage and they are a draw in and of themselves.
- 12:51So they are unlike so many. I mean there's only a handful of
- 12:56teams out there that are the television draw that Notre Dame
- 12:59is. And that's despite, I mean,
- 13:01they've had, you know, good runs here but they haven't really had
- 13:05an Elite Squad here in a while. So Salt Lake Bama, that's
- 13:10prevalent perennially in the national championship
- 13:13discussion. Truth, although they've been to
- 13:14the playoffs twice in five years so they have they have but I get
- 13:22I get your drift on. I get your drift on that.
- 13:24So I don't think that Domino's going to fall because I think
- 13:27somebody's going to pay out their ass for it and it's
- 13:30probably going to be worth it in the long run for them.
- 13:34So there that is. We've been on for 15 minutes and
- 13:39I haven't even talked Hokies yet so let's jump to some Mochi
- 13:42stuff here and brought let's start.
- 13:44We some staff updates were made back about six days ago and some
- 13:53interesting moves. Let's start with Jerome gouveia
- 13:56Winslow moving from player Personnel into a analyst role
- 14:02joining Brian, Chris joining Xavier joining Jeff Carpenter
- 14:08doing carry well. Web along with one more person.
- 14:12We're going to talk about here. I don't see this as a shock.
- 14:15No, jgw was coaching down at a smaller school.
- 14:19He obviously has aspirations to coach at a high level.
- 14:23To me, the player Personnel to springboard.
- 14:26Yeah, that was, that was getting his foot in the door at his alma
- 14:29mater. This is him getting closer to an
- 14:31on-field role, you know, you can say, whether you consider it a,
- 14:37you know, a bump up in, Terms of role that that's questionable,
- 14:40depending on where you are, and what your aspirations are.
- 14:43But it is, aspirations are to be an on-field coach, that, this is
- 14:46definitely a jump for him, a move up the ladder for him, so
- 14:51good for him, good for him. You know, he got some, he always
- 14:55got some aligned grief back in the day, but he was a solid
- 14:58player, not the most physically gifted, but definitely a good
- 15:02football player. And then Brian, there was one
- 15:05more dish into the analyst staff.
- 15:07Jan Johnson, who played under At Penn State team captain back in
- 15:112019, spent a year on the practice squad down at the
- 15:14Titans. Also honorable, mention
- 15:17All-American, and some All-American.
- 15:19All honorable mention Big Ten honors from every other little
- 15:22story story on him at the yes we did.
- 15:27Yes, we did about that later with Janet Johnson talking about
- 15:33Joe Rudolph, but that gives us six.
- 15:36Now, So you've got we already mentioned Chris Xavier, Jeff Jan
- 15:42carry and jdw. Obviously a hell of a lot bigger
- 15:47than last year. I mean, especially only analyst
- 15:50side. Oh yes, significantly.
- 15:53Bigger on the analyst we're plus one or two on.
- 15:56The the recruiting staff side player Personnel side.
- 16:00But we're we're in the big plus territory on the analyst side.
- 16:05And what that's going to do a it's you always keep saying it
- 16:09Brian we're out of Mom and Pops were getting we're not, you
- 16:13know, massive brain yet but when you have six, when you have
- 16:16really probably one guy that's probably going to go back and
- 16:20forth I'm assuming that's probably gonna be Chris calling
- 16:22them. Go back and forth and Webb's
- 16:23going to be your special teams analyst.
- 16:28What it does and buying you've mentioned it before coaches,
- 16:32aren't going to have to spend as much time in the film room.
- 16:36Let's time of the film room. You got guys that you can trust,
- 16:38it's looking at stuff like that. They're giving you notes.
- 16:41They're saying, all right. Here's here's where this player
- 16:45needs to work on next practice. Here's what this player needs to
- 16:50work on next practice. Here's, here's what this
- 16:53upcoming opponent does. Well, here's what they don't do.
- 16:57Well. L.
- 16:59And then they can explain how that is going to help you and on
- 17:02the field and that these are guys that you trust with this
- 17:06type of role versus having, just like, you know, an intern doing
- 17:11stuff like that. And then you have to go back and
- 17:14all right, well, he made these notes but I've got to still
- 17:17analyze. What, what was on the tape and
- 17:20then apply that. These are guys, you can trust in
- 17:23that type of stuff, to, to analyze the, the tape itself and
- 17:27and give you a boost. Going into a game prep week or
- 17:30something like that, going into the season.
- 17:33So that's big more eyes on tapes, means more catches more
- 17:38fixing of issues. That's the one part.
- 17:41I like about it is when you have a rough game having that many
- 17:45analysts the coaches, don't have to be there.
- 17:48The coaches can trust them to figure out what's wrong.
- 17:50They can get on the field and actually coach correctly,
- 17:54correcting. Those are so love it.
- 17:57Hopefully next year We get eight, maybe more.
- 18:00Yeah, we definitely need to keep keep moving forward.
- 18:02I think, you know, this this is this is a big jump for her where
- 18:06we were but we're still probably just middle of the pack in terms
- 18:10of the ACC overall in terms of the number of roles here.
- 18:14So we definitely need to get in at least in that.
- 18:17Upper third. If not in the top two or three
- 18:19now one other real quick note concerning some additional
- 18:24players, we've got a list here on go through really cool to see
- 18:26a guy like A.J Hampton. Who grew up in Roanoke went to
- 18:31board by the taught played down. It Emory & Henry played at Mount
- 18:36Union and spent some time at Florida State, really cool to
- 18:39see. He got a g a position here to
- 18:42further his career. So awesome for that young man
- 18:46and then Brian Carolyn Wilfred we have a new role of director
- 18:52of player engagement. so, We're engaging the players.
- 19:01I mean, it's great, we got another new role which is always
- 19:04awesome. But is this, is this just
- 19:08keeping the kids focused on grade, keeping the fifth focused
- 19:10on outside stuff? I'm going to be interested to
- 19:14hear more about this role because she had done some
- 19:18athletic advising pre this. So I'm very interesting how this
- 19:24role shapes of this. One of those Goodwill roles or
- 19:26if it's something different. Yeah, I mean, she did allowing
- 19:30on the support staff, Support Services student athlete.
- 19:34Support Services, team before that.
- 19:40Yeah, I think what she was in director of football,
- 19:42operations, director of football operations before, getting this
- 19:45role. So, you know, I don't know if
- 19:49this is going to look like on paper or in practice, but I like
- 19:55that. We're specializing.
- 19:58Yes, more on the off field staff whether it's recruiting or other
- 20:04forms of player engagement off the field.
- 20:07Yeah. She was a assistant director of
- 20:09the saas S. So yeah, also a tech Alum that
- 20:16are degree back in 2017. So good for her, obviously with
- 20:22the veil wenzhou joining the analyst day.
- 20:25Hokies were able to hire another player Personnel.
- 20:28His name is Alex Jones. Where do you think he
- 20:33potentially serve his capacity in a role similar?
- 20:37You know, I don't know, man. It's either Penn State marshal
- 20:41or somewhere like that. He actually did some work like
- 20:44this back in Marshall and 2019. He's a one of the Villa Grotto.
- 20:49He's another government. Exactly.
- 20:54What's more important about this?
- 20:56You know, obviously has a background relationship.
- 20:58There is available in. Zoe moved on the immediately.
- 21:01Back, filled his role that role isn't empty, we're in the past.
- 21:04What are we seeing? We seeing somebody?
- 21:05Leave a role. The role never gets filled.
- 21:08Yep, that is what I like seeing on this.
- 21:11Yeah, somebody would move up, or somebody would move on.
- 21:13And then a roll with sit on occupied, at least in terms of
- 21:17official announcement for months at a time.
- 21:21Yeah, even if somebody was doing it for me, Lee or informally in
- 21:25the interim. We wouldn't really actually have
- 21:29Any sort of noted press release on this for four months and
- 21:33months at a time and now we're getting it, you know right
- 21:37shortly after you know things are going down on the on the
- 21:40front end there. So that's that's a good thing.
- 21:42They're definitely more consistent with the press
- 21:45releases will consistent with communication.
- 21:49Above all the staff off the field is organized, and
- 21:53operating very true. And then, obviously, they added
- 21:56one more. Let's see.
- 21:58Rob Branch look first year and had done some time at West
- 22:04Virginia state. So obviously a smaller School
- 22:07plated, J mu. But again, we take a look at
- 22:10that play. A Personnel room, and do we
- 22:12lose? I'm trying to think that we lose
- 22:14somebody few months ago, or is this an additional position to
- 22:19that. That's a good question.
- 22:23Let me see. We got Mike, we've got robbed
- 22:26Alex and Lino. So, did they gain one today?
- 22:28Used to be three out there used to be three.
- 22:31I think it's for now. Okay.
- 22:33If if somebody out there knows, please let us know because I
- 22:37swear this was less than it was a few months ago I started I
- 22:42just you know I need to keep an Excel spreadsheet and delete and
- 22:46then we're is John Earl. We need him one more summer.
- 22:52Rodriguez an assistance of Creative Media in.
- 22:57Obviously, I'm gonna just say this, she, she's going to be
- 23:02working with Zach, Lance tackle and has done a hell of a job
- 23:05with the Creative Media stuff. I mean, get getting that man.
- 23:10More help is going to make the product look even better.
- 23:16She did some time as a graphic designer out at University of
- 23:18Colorado, which is really Be cool and she was a student there
- 23:25and she did she was a recruiting assistant in terms of obviously
- 23:28Serena's got her foot in the door up football, but I just
- 23:31love seeing Zack Steven grow because it's I feel like that
- 23:35department in the last 18 months.
- 23:39Has really just like just went through the roof, how things?
- 23:43Look visually how the videos or cut.
- 23:45It's awesome to see that. Yeah, and they and I really like
- 23:49the the graphics that they have Pivoted to for the 23 class and
- 23:54a lot of the other things they're doing as well, because I
- 23:57feel like that it kind of gotten stale.
- 24:01There was a lot of like, the 20-20-20 stuff that kind of bled
- 24:06over into 20, 21 and 20 and 22 and it kind of got got same ish.
- 24:11And I feel like this is kind of, I think the more hands on deck
- 24:14is made the creative side of it a lot easier because when you
- 24:18can When you have more hands, you can more easily Implement
- 24:22different ideas without having to just plug in play to get to
- 24:27get the job done. So, Abso-freakin'-lutely.
- 24:31So again the support staff growing significantly in the
- 24:35last few years, something we knew that had to happen for.
- 24:38That's awesome to see I Brown. Let's turn to the diamond real
- 24:41quick and have a quick look five Hokies get drafted for in the
- 24:46first five rounds, Gavin cross the diamond going number 9, to
- 24:52the Royals. Because I mean all year, he's a
- 24:56top ten pick, he's a top ten, pick it, it holds, True show
- 25:01will go 68 to the twins. Bisson, fourth round to the
- 25:05Dodgers. Kate hundred to the Reds and
- 25:07then Graham Arvid, I just put your debt name.
- 25:12I know. Sorry Graham.
- 25:14So you just admit your mistakes and you move on.
- 25:19There we go. Awesome to see that.
- 25:22Not only that couple of those really the first four guys are
- 25:27really going to get paid a significant amount of Gavin and
- 25:30Tanner are going to get a boat on money.
- 25:32No one slot. I know Gavin slots like five and
- 25:36a half. I want to say Tanner's or
- 25:37somewhere around too. Likely not going to get the full
- 25:41payment going to get a lot of money so great for them
- 25:43financially. But just in general for the
- 25:45program, you sit here and just two years ago.
- 25:50Team didn't even make the ACC tournament.
- 25:53They didn't make it this year. One of the best teams in the
- 25:57country and this is one of those things that can get you rolling,
- 26:01right? We had a great season and guys
- 26:04are getting drafted, it's an easy sell Yeah I think that's
- 26:09the big thing is that this is going to be a good seller.
- 26:11Recruiting Trails like hey you come here you know you're going
- 26:15to get a bump in your draft stock by coming here and
- 26:20spending time as a hokey and with baseball I think that
- 26:25that's such a big big thing with you know a lot of these kids
- 26:28getting some of them getting drafted out of high school and
- 26:32making the decision. Okay.
- 26:33Do I go Take the scholarship offer that I have do.
- 26:37I go ahead and try to give it a run in the minors.
- 26:41Hey, you come here, you spend 23 years here.
- 26:45You know, you're going to set yourself up for a better spot
- 26:50down the road. Yeah, and he, and nowadays in
- 26:53college baseball because of the draft only going to 20 rounds.
- 26:58It is significantly, helping keep players.
- 27:03Committed to their scholarship. So, how you recruit?
- 27:06Now, it's even more important because, you know, roughly only
- 27:10about 600 guys are getting drafted.
- 27:12A lot of them, you know, probably more than half of them.
- 27:15Maybe 60% or college guys, because they've already got the
- 27:18proven record versus the potential and high school guys,
- 27:23you know, which is really cool. So again that program building
- 27:29even though it's a non-revenue sport, it's Again, what do we
- 27:33always say? Brian, it's one of those sports
- 27:34like wrestling, probably getting close like women's basketball,
- 27:38where it pays for itself, more money back to football.
- 27:42Yeah, I mean, it's some prestige in that to I mean, this is, you
- 27:46know, College World Series. Conference playoffs.
- 27:51I mean a lot of these that those championships get a lot of air
- 27:55time. So it's not like you know, a lot
- 27:58of the sports that you might see on a random weekday on the SEC
- 28:04network. These are getting some some
- 28:08Primetime spots on ESPN, on ESPN2, on the SEC network.
- 28:14So it's important to to grow the sport in that, In to grow your
- 28:21your department in those words as well that are getting that
- 28:24are time, okay? All right, Brian, this is going
- 28:29to be a little segment this week.
- 28:32What really grinds Brian's gears?
- 28:35You have the floor sir. Okay, so you know we trash the
- 28:41NCAA pretty regularly on this show that's not a secret to
- 28:46anybody that's listening but this this is the thing that
- 28:51bothers me the most about the NCAA.
- 28:54So you know we're we're in a situation where you got Mass
- 28:58realignment, you got ni L, + IL stuff going on all crazy, the
- 29:04NCAA washes, their hands. But the the rules committee
- 29:10found it in their in their time to as they're looking at the
- 29:13game and try to figure out how to make the game better.
- 29:17If there was something that just was taking away from the quality
- 29:21of the game Polly of baseball and that is celebratory props on
- 29:27the field. So that means Hammer Time
- 29:34potentially is no more and It's just fucking stupid.
- 29:40It's still, it's stupid. There's no other way to say it.
- 29:43So why are, why is this thing? We're focusing on say it, moron,
- 29:48you're a moron. What are we doing?
- 29:52I mean, we get we get all of this stuff that we're going on.
- 29:58That you should be, you know, that you are a governing body
- 30:01that you should be focused on. And I'm not saying you can't
- 30:04focus on multiple things at one time, I get that.
- 30:07Yes, but when you're not handling, the big stuff.
- 30:10I can't take this small shit, seriously.
- 30:12Nope, they shot. You just bring the hammer out.
- 30:18What are they going to do? I mean, seriously, what are they
- 30:20going to do? They have no spine.
- 30:22They have no backbone. How many at this point called?
- 30:26They're bluffing, I mean, they really have no, no Authority
- 30:29anymore. What are you going to do?
- 30:32All right, Ron, let's turn it over to recruiting had a commit
- 30:37land on Monday, right above where we were heading over to
- 30:41Hardy would an RV a product at a Collegiate School.
- 30:48Christian William 62, 170 247, has him as a 87 3 star the
- 30:55number 14 player in the state at the moment.
- 31:00Ted currently sits 36 in both composite and overall and you
- 31:04know, just kind of having a look right now.
- 31:08This is our highest commit to date from the state of Virginia.
- 31:14Brian, I know you had a little time to Peak at him.
- 31:17What are we seeing from this? Again?
- 31:19Athlete lot, more athletes this year being recruited.
- 31:24Yeah, he's probably going to be a wide receiver for us, more
- 31:26than likely just looking at the Tate.
- 31:32You know pretty good route Runner.
- 31:35Not Elite Speed but good enough I really like that.
- 31:39We are targeting a lot of lot more guys that are that 61 and
- 31:43above. We get to get a little bit more
- 31:46range across the board and I like his hands.
- 31:51He has a pretty good hands. You shown the ability to go up
- 31:54and get a ball and high point it.
- 31:58Good job of catching over the middle.
- 32:00Not not, not afraid to get you over the middle leaving it. 170.
- 32:03So I like it, you know, it's not it's not a blow, your skirt up,
- 32:08get but you could get it's one of those things.
- 32:11That's keeping the train moving. Yeah.
- 32:14Keeps the train moves and good potential 24/7.
- 32:17Thanks a lot more of him than the rest of the recruiting
- 32:22service because he's down an eighty five.
- 32:23Seven two point eight, five seven so you kind of start doing
- 32:27the math there's somebody's out here is had him at like an 83
- 32:30and you know I think just from hearing you, he's not quite that
- 32:35low, he's not closer to a 2 Star than he is potential High 3.
- 32:40And Brian you just mentioned it. There only two guys in this
- 32:44thing of 16 that are under six foot tall and that's Thomas
- 32:49Williams, The Athlete down out of South Carolina and takehe
- 32:54that Highland Springs and everybody else.
- 32:58You know, Trail on Mitchell. We got out of Southern Nash, 6
- 33:01to avoid Copeland, at Appomattox 64, you know, dealing with a key
- 33:06down and Buford 61 Marcel 6. I mean that is a good thing to
- 33:12see and I also love seeing athlete because every time I see
- 33:17athlete it's usually you get labeled that when you do
- 33:21multiple things on a field, right?
- 33:22You're probably playing wideout a running back or quarterback,
- 33:26but you're doing something defensively and we've already
- 33:29seen in the early part of prize 10.
- 33:32Year, he's not afraid to just flip somebody, say you will be a
- 33:37better Corner than you will a wide receiver or you'll be a
- 33:41better safety, then you will be a core.
- 33:44You know, getting athletes with the lowercase, a is always a
- 33:47good thing. So, you know, in this case
- 33:50they've got to uppercase a, you get to you, get to find where
- 33:55they fit in your system. And when with a roster like
- 33:58ours, that has a lot of holes in different places.
- 34:02Getting guys with some of that flexibility and fluidity of
- 34:06position is not a bad thing. Not at all.
- 34:11All right, let's flip it. To basketball recruiting Brandon
- 34:17Rick Steiner. Commits that name had been
- 34:20popping up. A lot people have been dealing.
- 34:23Yeah, the Sun for us. Kids of the 90s and 2000's, the
- 34:30son of Big Poppa, Pump Scott, Steiner the nephew of the
- 34:35dog-faced gremlin Rick, Steiner, who say, what you want to say
- 34:39about pro wrestling. Those two guys want to get all
- 34:41Americans at Michigan. They were likely Jit football
- 34:43players are. Let's get badass.
- 34:45They were legit athletes. Yeah, he just went into an
- 34:48entertainment industry in. I always loved the Steiner
- 34:51Brothers, but 61 point guard, 185 pounds of top 10 player in
- 34:56Georgia, rated three star, but from everything you're reading
- 35:01this kid went from like nobody knew his name to being on
- 35:06everybody's radar, picking up a ton of commits like LSU offered.
- 35:13Miami Notre Dame Xavier, you know, Georgia Tech Kansas State,
- 35:19like some legit solid, you know, programs are offering him in,
- 35:24you know, the Hokies get in with Mike young.
- 35:26So, you know, again I've said it with this class.
- 35:32I mean, it's it holds true for basketball.
- 35:34Some of this is still Covid carry over in just not having a
- 35:39lot of tape and guys being under recruited and you're seeing a
- 35:44lot of big push at the last minute.
- 35:46Wants these guys start getting all the other teams Radars, this
- 35:50is what happened here. I mean her extender is
- 35:52essentially Padula 2.0 but you know, you didn't.
- 35:56You didn't get any. What?
- 35:58Sophomore film? You probably only got partial
- 36:01Junior film. So, yeah, so again, it helps in
- 36:08probably helps. The relationship was built early
- 36:11with him trying to see here real quick and see if we've got the
- 36:15official offered date. They don't have that on here,
- 36:20but could probably go back through this timeline.
- 36:22Figure it out. But again relationship, right?
- 36:26Yep, we get, it's every sport. And if you can get the
- 36:30relationships, A guy like this, who's under the radar, who blows
- 36:35up. You might have a chance of
- 36:37pulling it off. So awesome to see that.
- 36:40All right, one more piece, Brian here, the Hokey Hall of Fame,
- 36:45class of 2020, to has announced on a shout out through these
- 36:48three. Folks before we get to the for
- 36:49football players, the first tortilla happens on a three-time
- 36:54All-American. The second woman ever to win a
- 36:57National Championship at Virginia Tech or For AC tails
- 37:05are career three in hammer, throw one in weight, throw more
- 37:10seldom, Nikki, two national championships.
- 37:14Three appearances in the Olympics, third hokey to win
- 37:18multiple NCAA titles and 2012 in his weight throw championship
- 37:24and then Sarah Smith six-time ACC Champion All-American and 07
- 37:29as a swimming and Diving scholar athletes.
- 37:31The first of all, shout out to those. those Hokies who clearly,
- 37:34you know, apparently, you know, We kind of look at this and we
- 37:40think about you see 2007 in that you know, where we're building
- 37:46to get here. But let's talk about the guys
- 37:51that we all know and I want to start with Mike Gentry.
- 37:57Remember gentrified, remember hearing that back in the day you
- 37:59hear about, guys would go to Tech and get gentrified.
- 38:03Mike was a for his time was a revolutionary strength and
- 38:07conditioning coach. Yep.
- 38:09In all of us, who are a certain age when you started hearing
- 38:15about Gentry and what he did to some of the guys he made, A lot
- 38:21of those teams, what they were with his programs.
- 38:24When you talk about the, the development side of Virginia
- 38:29Tech and turning the two and three stars in to all Americans
- 38:33and NFL draft picks. It started with my Ginger damn,
- 38:38right? It did Mike still working, I
- 38:40think he's down at Emory & Henry now, but also to see him go into
- 38:43the Hall of Fame. All right?
- 38:45The next one, probably, if you're a football fan of any
- 38:48yell, regardless of Of tech, you know, Phantom or not Bruce,
- 38:54Arians goes in quarterback in the 1970s coached, a ton mean,
- 39:00came back coached, at Tech. I think for one year then
- 39:05obviously in the NFL coach to your beloved cold stare for a
- 39:08while run, I know that Ben Pittsburgh for a long spell
- 39:12there. As I was see, obviously Tampa.
- 39:16You have a couple stops here recently.
- 39:20That it had some success. So yeah, but I mean I love you
- 39:26know say what you want. Some people say well this is
- 39:29because he want a Super Bowl. Yeah.
- 39:31Smart universities if somebody wins a significant Something in
- 39:37their life. Even if they were not the best
- 39:40player on the field, you put them in the Hall of Fame.
- 39:41I don't give a damn. Yeah, and I mean if we're being
- 39:45honest though, I mean a lot of the The numbers that he held
- 39:49when he from his from his time stood up through Michael Vick.
- 39:53So a lot of those didn't fall until Vic got around there.
- 39:57So You know, there's something to be said, I know was a
- 40:01different era, you know, they don't necessarily stand out in
- 40:05the modern era. But, you know, there were some
- 40:08to be said for what he did in his time inside, just a career
- 40:14Achievement Award. That that's getting passed out
- 40:16here, but it definitely helps that he want.
- 40:19He turned around and won a Super Bowl as a coach in the NFL.
- 40:22Yeah. All right.
- 40:24Brian, a few minutes ago, you mentioned turning a tooth
- 40:27turning, a 2 Star. Into a All-American into a
- 40:33Benefield draft pick. Essentially, that's what Mike
- 40:36Gentry. Did to Kam.
- 40:37Chancellor of Chancellor was a two-star with three offers.
- 40:42Quarterback down. And he comes, Virginia Tech, he
- 40:47plays corner, he plays Rover, he's plays free.
- 40:50You know, two-time ACC Champion Super Bowl champion All-Pro,
- 40:56when he hits you, you knew it. And I mean, one of those guys,
- 41:01you know, in the in the late 2000s, man, you you kind of, you
- 41:06just kind of knew. Yeah, yeah, I mean that was, you
- 41:11know, when we talk about the personality of you be you, there
- 41:16are other guys that had Physical traits that stood out, but can
- 41:22was the guy that let his hitting do the talking, let his energy
- 41:27that he brought to the proceedings, do the talking.
- 41:32And it's nice to see him get in there especially after such a
- 41:38great NFL career you know essentially the Thunder of the
- 41:43legion of boom there. Yes he was to meet to be.
- 41:47Honestly he was the most important part of the legion of
- 41:49boom because if you don't have someone of his size when he got
- 41:54there he was like 64 225 who could play like a free safety
- 41:59hit like a linebacker could cover tight end running.
- 42:02That thing doesn't click. Don't get me wrong, Sherman was
- 42:07great Comics was great, but if you don't have him to put fear
- 42:12leads to boo, never is all right.
- 42:14Speaking of putting fear, I mean Vince Hall, man, or your starter
- 42:2144 consecutive game started, I mean him, and the DD still are
- 42:26to me the prototypical, Mike and backer in the system.
- 42:32Yep. And even the system we have.
- 42:34Now, if you, if you told Brent pry, he could find an Executor
- 42:37and events in next year's class. He take them in a heartbeat,
- 42:41something more impressive. He did to me, you don't see this
- 42:44happen when he won The Dudley in 06.
- 42:47Best 8-ball bestie one player in the state of Virginia.
- 42:49He was a you don't see defensive guys, get that even guys who
- 42:53gets a ton of tackles and less and less their own like special
- 42:56teams and their running back. Punk and kickers.
- 42:58Exactly. That's usually the only way you
- 43:00see that happen. Exactly.
- 43:03I mean but you know, this this was the years he played where
- 43:08the years we were We were games every year, we will constantly
- 43:14in front of that TV or multiple games every year we were
- 43:16multiple watching. We were watching multiple games
- 43:18together at home in the dorm room in the apartment apartment.
- 43:23So we were wondering, why, why did we start doing this at 12
- 43:27today? You know, why not in, you know,
- 43:32again, it's just one of those things.
- 43:35I'm glad he got his due, but you go through, there's Ben.
- 43:40Just a handful of folks, to win the dull, awarded a defensive
- 43:44players and the names, you know, add up.
- 43:47So I'm really glad to see they put Vince Hall in the Hall of
- 43:49Fame. He is well deserved of it man.
- 43:52Absolutely. I run for we start talking about
- 43:56what went down Monday night, we are going to take a quick pause
- 44:00for a message from our digital Partners as we take a quick
- 44:03break. We'd like to tell you about

- 44:17Grassroots digital studio.com forward slash free Dash website,
- 44:22Dash report. Now back to the episode All
- 44:25right, so Monday was the Hokie tailgate at Hardy would hear in
- 44:31the RBA being Brian talked a couple times.
- 44:34Say hey, let's try to, you know, get out there about 20, 25 4:45
- 44:41We thought we were going to beat the traffic or did we beat the
- 44:44traffic scratch that scratch that oh yeah we got there.
- 44:50We were they were parking across the street and we were about two
- 44:54thirds of the way down that lot when we got there.
- 44:56So Hokies were out in full force.
- 45:01I don't know where the official numbers are, but I know they
- 45:03were north of 1000. I think they were close to 1500.
- 45:07So that's a damn good showing for for Hokie Nation out here in
- 45:10the r-va. I'll ask you first impressions
- 45:15of the event. Well, the first impression is
- 45:18event, just walking after we parked and we're walking up,
- 45:20they had shuttles. So you did not have to walk
- 45:23completely from the parking lot but just walking up.
- 45:26It was a told brine it brought me back.
- 45:29It felt like we were walking up from prices for it.
- 45:32When we were younger, we used tailgate down there and going up
- 45:34to the stadium. You just had this feel.
- 45:36It's a it's a different energy going on in Hokie Nation right
- 45:40now with everything. Been done since November of last
- 45:43year, no, you, there's buzz in the air.
- 45:46There's, you know, there's just this feeling that things might
- 45:51get back to the way it was in. That's that was my feeling going
- 45:56in and when you just saw, how many folks were there and I
- 45:58mean, we, you know, just people seen excited and I know you can
- 46:03see every year were football, season, people are going to be
- 46:05excited but it's just it's just different this year than it has
- 46:08been over the last really last 23 years.
- 46:11Cheers. Yeah, I think there's some
- 46:13there's some fire back in the program.
- 46:15I think there's enthusiasm and I think there's you know, it's
- 46:19mixed with cautious optimism. I think there's not very many
- 46:25people that think we're going to have a very good team this year.
- 46:27I think there's some some people that think will win 8 games.
- 46:32Maybe most most people are more in the 527 range or like make a
- 46:38bowl, you know, maybe get one. Extra one in there and see what
- 46:45happens. I think that's realistic
- 46:47considering our schedule and considering, you know, some of
- 46:50the pickups we had in the offseason in the portal and some
- 46:54of the some of the freshmen that are going to be coming up and
- 46:57step it up this year. So it's going to be interesting.
- 46:59But there is a buzz that I haven't seen.
- 47:04So I'll say this, I went to Hardy would for the Country Club
- 47:10North Carolina game. So yeah, last year, first game
- 47:13of the season, like there was enthusiasm for it just because
- 47:17it was like, all right? Everybody's out kind of for the
- 47:20first time in a long time. Yeah, we're football related
- 47:23event but there was not a lot of excitement in terms of what was
- 47:30going to happen. A lot of people were very, very
- 47:33nervous about that game. Obviously, it went our way.
- 47:37We played, played a good game. Game kept it clean and then that
- 47:44really kind of helped helped help carry the day but there's a
- 47:50different type of enthusiasm there there isn't.
- 47:53As much holding our breath that, you know.
- 47:58Yeah, disaster is around the corner.
- 48:00Absolutely. And that's the feel you got.
- 48:02There you again, it's the renewed sense of hope.
- 48:05It's like a spring. The nation is review renewed and
- 48:09when you know when hearing prop talk which will talk about just
- 48:13a couple minutes, you'll understand why?
- 48:16But let's talk real quick. We got to talk to Bud Foster for
- 48:19a compliment. It's and we talked about
- 48:20boundary Corner. We are not going to mention what
- 48:22he said because we want to have, but on the show one day.
- 48:27But let's just say it was very interesting as we started
- 48:29talking about players Bud, was in, is in full retirement mode.
- 48:33I am. Now, I'm weird 30 years. 35
- 48:37years from retirement, the way, everything's going nowadays, but
- 48:41I hope I'm like, Bud and living my best life.
- 48:43Like, he was one thing that my man was living his best life.
- 48:47He had folks Preen and drinks. He was in head-to-head, the the
- 48:52linen pants and the like Hawaiian shirt be t-shirt on
- 48:57like he was, he was full lounging and I looked at it, I
- 49:02was like, man if I'm retiring like that And I'm doing all
- 49:06right, because I had to get some retirement tips.
- 49:10Like, you know, what's the secret?
- 49:12Because, yeah, he looks like he's doing it.
- 49:13The best doing it, the best and the coolest part about.
- 49:16But if you've never been harder, when he was literally in this,
- 49:18the middle of it and then if you wanted to walk up and have him
- 49:22sign something, I saw him sign a couple things, he take your
- 49:25picture, we snapped one with them, of course. and just being
- 49:29him masseter out there like, you know, sometimes you see folks
- 49:36You know, better famous in public and I don't want to
- 49:39bother him, it seemed like Bud was there to talk to any hokey
- 49:43that wanted to talk to him about anything and anywhere.
- 49:46He was ready to shake all the hands and kiss all the babies,
- 49:48he has ready to go and he was fired up to support private was
- 49:55fired at the sort of support the program.
- 49:56So that was that was big. It was big and a guy like that
- 50:01there that because he didn't have to come to that one.
- 50:05No, he did not. Not and especially, you know,
- 50:07when was what Roanoke? He didn't have to come to our
- 50:10VA. You never come to our VA
- 50:11especially when you hear Mike young had to plane which game
- 50:15three and a half hour drive. Actually four hour drive because
- 50:19he's down at Crater Lake. So long drive back home.
- 50:23He had a big look, big drive back, he wasn't a, it wasn't an
- 50:26hour flight for him. Nope.
- 50:28All right. Next, you know we had whipped
- 50:32come up and talk with believe it or not, got actually a good
- 50:35ovation. Some people's feelings of wit
- 50:39might not like him but, you know, talk it's big.
- 50:43So I think a lot of people feel good about Whit not talking
- 50:46about football, but when we talk about football, you know, people
- 50:49get tight bundles about with, so yeah?
- 50:51Yeah, in fact and fair enough. I mean they've got reason for
- 50:56that. I mean there has been You know,
- 50:59missteps on that side of things. He well let's go back.
- 51:04First of all, his first missed up was made when he got here
- 51:06instead of addressing football up front.
- 51:08He addressed everything else. People can see what you want to
- 51:12say about the for when they hire at that point in time.
- 51:14That was a literally a top-three tire.
- 51:17Don't get it twisted, the 2020 2020.
- 51:23Yeah. The 2020 is worse than the
- 51:25higher itself. Yeah.
- 51:27If your Pointed to things to complain to with about extending
- 51:32Fuente too early. Yes not getting rid of him in
- 51:342020. Those are the two two biggest
- 51:37things that you can criticize with about aside from not
- 51:40addressing football sooner, but also give him credit.
- 51:44When things went sideways in 2018, readjusting his plan and
- 51:48getting the facilities. Updated getting, 'if a
- 51:52fast-track, the stuff that had to be fast tracking if you
- 51:54wanted to actually build things out, and he did, Again, we're
- 51:59probably about one year behind where we should be with Coach.
- 52:01Whether that ended up netting, us prai or Shane or Tony yelling
- 52:04or whoever the hell it would have been exactly what we're
- 52:08about one year behind on the rebuild.
- 52:10But aside from that the other stuff that when he, when he
- 52:14finally got around to it, he's putting it together the way it
- 52:17needs to, and he did it. Obviously, we all want things to
- 52:20happen yesterday because we care about the team being something
- 52:25to us and with all this stuff going on.
- 52:28On with realignment and ni L. We feel like we don't want to be
- 52:33one of those teams is Left Behind.
- 52:34We don't want to be the leftovers.
- 52:36Now I don't want to be leftovers at all and he addressed it.
- 52:38No talking about how complex the situation is.
- 52:41Realignment is said, it's something that now is a
- 52:44conversation every day in merryman about his previous top
- 52:48Cincinnati. It was a conversation every day
- 52:51there, so obviously it is up on his mind on the Forefront.
- 52:55He mentioned honest. I alongs with, you know,
- 52:58commissioner Phillips. I'd like to hear what that
- 53:00honest dialogue is. I hope it's listen as soon as we
- 53:04can. We going to leave unless you do
- 53:05something a lot better and you need to get some more markets in
- 53:09here. That solidifying, our position
- 53:11need to get better meteorites or in three to five years.
- 53:16You're looking at having fewer members of this conference if
- 53:20things line up. Yeah, exactly.
- 53:23If you're not, I mean, at some point, we got to light a fire
- 53:26under the Commissioners a stew. Because I know he understands
- 53:30the situation but if he's not getting pressure every day.
- 53:34Yes then in especially from schools like Virginia Tech.
- 53:39It doesn't matter if Florida State or Clemson or Miami or
- 53:46even you know UNC or in ceased. I mean most of those schools are
- 53:50probably going to find a home in whatever the new world looks
- 53:54like. It's The Fringe schools like
- 53:57Virginia. Tech like UVA like Louisville.
- 54:01Like Georgia Tech that have good markets, but, you know, have
- 54:08some shortcomings in terms of where their programs are at the
- 54:11time that they're going to probably need a little bit of a
- 54:15boost and if we're not pushing for it, then that gives us more
- 54:19potential to get left behind exactly.
- 54:22All right. Something else he address talk
- 54:24about while Brent prowls. The guy, you know, made the
- 54:26comments that he The initial bar, one of the initial goals
- 54:29honours list would also made the comment that he needed, Virginia
- 54:33Tech how to get back to the defensive mentality which was,
- 54:37you know very very good to hear from him because you think
- 54:42Virginia Tech you think defense you know the one thing in this
- 54:47was the ultimate shot right here.
- 54:51Everything is better under Brent.
- 54:54Yeah, I mean, yeah, and I mean he's not wrong, I mean, but like
- 55:00that's just he didn't say it, but he basically back in should
- 55:04have just went to a with that like, everything that I'm sorry.
- 55:08And I'll Circle back to the defensive mentality.
- 55:10Because when we look at the teams, That are consistently
- 55:15winning the national championship and consistently
- 55:19going to the college football, playoff true.
- 55:22Yes. They do have some good offenses
- 55:24in there. It's particularly looking at
- 55:26like Ohio State you know Oregon but all of them play either very
- 55:33good or nasty defense. Yep.
- 55:37Right. I mean, we do you think a
- 55:39Clemson we think of Ohio State, when we think of ago, when we
- 55:42think of Bammel Bama obviously. And any of the other guys in the
- 55:47conversation, when you think of them, you think of Defense first
- 55:51and everything else is secondary.
- 55:53Ohio State might be the only one that's probably in the, you
- 55:56know, more or less balanced in that category.
- 55:59Maybe but I mean thing, I mean, nasty and mean both of those
- 56:03young. Oh yeah.
- 56:04I mean I'm saying hey Emily, they have a lead.
- 56:06Offense and an elite defense. They're just not they're not
- 56:10stepping it quite up as much as like a Bama on the defensive
- 56:13side, I got you. All right.
- 56:14Well, the other thing, he's talked about everything has to
- 56:17be built, right? We agree with that you because
- 56:20again, I think he saw what happened in 16.
- 56:23He did not build it right. He, he extended somebody too
- 56:27early. He gave somebody too much leash,
- 56:30so it has to be built, right? And he hates the gave him so
- 56:35much lead. Is that he continuously hung
- 56:37himself by not getting rid of personnel?
- 56:41That were not up to par? Yeah.
- 56:44Now, Brian, you love what he said on the ni L you love when
- 56:48he said, uh, Sadie's, hold the NCAA, this entail shit, it's
- 56:54going to affect recruiting and they basically brush them off.
- 56:59The NCAA continues to just stick their thumb up their ass on a
- 57:03lot of the stuff, the NCAA had over a decade to figure this
- 57:09out. They got to a point.
- 57:11They got to a point where State started passing laws.
- 57:15So once so they kick the can down the road.
- 57:18Now, what states are passing laws?
- 57:19Now, they are worried about if we put in stuff now, are we open
- 57:25ourselves up to lawsuits? So now they got scared in the
- 57:28laws. Suits that are like, well, if
- 57:29we're going to do this, we just got to have Open Season.
- 57:33And now you got Open Season and of course, it's being used to
- 57:35recruit players what you think he was going to do like zactly.
- 57:39But I just love hit like, it sounds like the ades are out
- 57:42there like, trying to push this like get this done.
- 57:45It's gonna Peck things and they didn't do anything.
- 57:48So put a, put a reasonable plan out there instead of just
- 57:52saying, all right. Well, this is this is the thing
- 57:56now. Exactly figure out how it's
- 57:58going to be implemented within your state legislator within
- 58:02your conference Within. School, like it's just a
- 58:05cluster, and it varies from state line to State Line and in
- 58:08terms of what what teams are doing.
- 58:10It varies from school to school and various from conference to
- 58:13conference and it's not just about the dollars, it's about
- 58:16what is and is not permissible because again, the NCAA didn't
- 58:20give enough guidance. Exactly.
- 58:23All right, you know he did talk about got to be miles within a
- 58:27oh, we'll see how that plays out.
- 58:29But let's talk about events in a few thing on Game Day experience
- 58:31has he said the Wi-Fi, Is going to be slightly better in Lane he
- 58:35got he got class. Yeah I need I need a definition
- 58:39of that. One day, one percent would be
- 58:43better than zero or negative so I'll give him that.
- 58:46He also said that the the restrooms the pictures are going
- 58:49to be better - in peace. Troughs, no no, no trolls are
- 58:53fine. You really want to make the
- 58:56bathrooms better, put some TVs in there on the wall.
- 59:01So if it's, you know, the third quarter, And we're driving or or
- 59:06you know we just punted the ball.
- 59:07I don't worry about running to the pisser and missing the game
- 59:11because if you as you know you go through the the walkways and
- 59:14go get a beer, so I'm not a big ol bear now or get some food
- 59:18their TVs there. You can see the plays you don't
- 59:21miss anything. Except you know, that feeling I
- 59:24want to be able to go to the bathroom and if it's a longer
- 59:26line, if I'm in there taking a piss, I can still see what's
- 59:31happening on the field. That's all I ask for after two
- 59:34TVs, on each side, where the troughs are exactly as you walk
- 59:38in one above the trough, if you got to go into the Stalls where
- 59:42you just shit out of luck. And one when you exit and you're
- 59:46shitting, so you definitely ought to look.
- 59:48You definitely have you might as well as nobody wants to shit and
- 59:50Lane Stadium. Let's go.
- 59:52Nobody wants to shit in any public safety and just being
- 59:55honest about it. Diagonally.
- 59:57All right, so with cheered, most of the night and then he got the
- 1:00:00boot, the end when he said, stick it in would not be back.
- 1:00:05Yeah. What the hell?
- 1:00:08Why are we? Why are we still doing this?
- 1:00:09Why are we why we're still? We're still kicking.
- 1:00:14Well, you know, it's your nasty mind.
- 1:00:18If you're thinking that way, I'm trying to put the ball in the
- 1:00:21end zone. People, what are you where are
- 1:00:22you? Where is your mind?
- 1:00:23Go, we are in the Red Zone. Trying to get the ball in the
- 1:00:28end zone for a touchdown. Where are your minds at All you
- 1:00:32people complain about it. Where are your minds at?
- 1:00:36I've heard that since 2003 and I'll ever thought about it.
- 1:00:39Oh, we're down here. We're about to get it in, we're
- 1:00:42about to score. None of this other stuff you
- 1:00:44guys mentioned. So clearly those who are against
- 1:00:47it are pervs, that's one way to sell it Curtis.
- 1:00:55Okay, it needs were in the red zone.
- 1:01:00That's what it means. It means we're about to stick it
- 1:01:05in to the residence. Exactly.
- 1:01:08All right, let's talk about Brent pry, and him up on stage
- 1:01:12with my keeper of who we got to meet and talk to about five
- 1:01:14minutes. Mikey, burn up is awesome.
- 1:01:18He's bad, dude. He is that dude.
- 1:01:20Like, he is the guy, like, if you say, you know, Game Day
- 1:01:25weekend you could spend time with, you know, any personality.
- 1:01:29I know he's in the A booth the game but Mike just seems like
- 1:01:32the guy who owns it, he was walking around.
- 1:01:35Look like he owned the place. He's like 70 years old.
- 1:01:38He looks, 55 looks in great shape.
- 1:01:44We gotta love my like burning, man.
- 1:01:47You just got to. Yeah, he was tearing it up.
- 1:01:50We had to talk to about five minutes.
- 1:01:53Got got to tell him that. He's good, buddy, Wes says,
- 1:01:56hello. So yeah, he was, he was excited
- 1:01:59about that and But I love my keeper McMahon and hopefully
- 1:02:04every day I think. Now every of the Poke of, then I
- 1:02:06go to, I'm trying to find my government.
- 1:02:08Talk to him for five minutes. Yeah, I definitely he's one of
- 1:02:12the guys that you do. You can have a beer with and
- 1:02:14just talk about not just hokey sports but just like anything in
- 1:02:19general. Like he's that guy that's going
- 1:02:20to have that conversation with you.
- 1:02:22Yeah. Okay.
- 1:02:23Well let's talk about another guy.
- 1:02:26You want to share a beer with Brent pry gets up on stage and
- 1:02:30it's it's immediate the energy. It's a joke, it's on Twitter,
- 1:02:36didn't Chad she he gets it and he does get it.
- 1:02:39This guy gets it this get he's up there horse himself a beer on
- 1:02:44stage you know just you know been here eight months brings
- 1:02:50out his wife to introduce a cheers of the crowd, taking a
- 1:02:54panoramic selfie of the crowd and sending it to recruits.
- 1:02:57I mean And, you know, he talked about, he knew that this was the
- 1:03:02space because it was the fandom and that was his cell point in,
- 1:03:08you know, it didn't feel like a cell point though.
- 1:03:10It felt like it was a genuine response from him.
- 1:03:14And I mean, he was just having fun up there.
- 1:03:17Yep. During that interview portion,
- 1:03:19he was having a good time here. Like I said, said, drinking
- 1:03:22beer, What I've noticed and I hate to juxtapose this with with
- 1:03:29Flint a just because, you know, I think we kicked we've kicked
- 1:03:33the dog enough at this point, but we have the same people.
- 1:03:37He's previous, guys, you gotta be a comparison but at the same
- 1:03:40time when we look at an event like this and we had this like
- 1:03:45Q&A session with burn up, right? So he's up on stage.
- 1:03:48He's up there with burning up there talking But pry is.
- 1:03:53I'd say leading the discussion just as much as my key is.
- 1:03:57It wasn't my key directing him where to go ask them the
- 1:04:01question getting the can answer moving on.
- 1:04:04Like Coach problems up there to talk and to interact with the
- 1:04:10crowd and then also he was going to answer some questions.
- 1:04:14That might burn a pad form. Yep.
- 1:04:18And you could tell that from from the jump, I mean the the
- 1:04:21energy was just completely different.
- 1:04:25Exactly. And that's what it was.
- 1:04:27It was I'm not here to answer questions.
- 1:04:30I'm here to talk to the fans. It wasn't this wasn't an I'm
- 1:04:36just here so I don't get fine situation this very very much.
- 1:04:40You know I'm here I'm selling the program, I'm selling the
- 1:04:44program so I can sell the program to recruits.
- 1:04:47It's all cyclical. When it all feeds into what we
- 1:04:51want as a team to Get to right? So I think I think he
- 1:04:57understands that it's, it's a multi-pronged like being a head
- 1:05:01coach, has a multi-prong thing. It's not just I've got to be
- 1:05:04good at managing a game. I've got to be good at
- 1:05:08understanding X's and O's. It's not just that it's so much
- 1:05:13else and I think he understands those those aspects of it and he
- 1:05:17did a good job of selling those things to the people that were
- 1:05:21there. And I think a lot of it.
- 1:05:23As you said it's not just selling its that's just how
- 1:05:27that's his personality. He's a very energetic guy and
- 1:05:31you said it too, he seems to understand.
- 1:05:36When he's talking to people how to talk to people, right?
- 1:05:40That's it and that goes. Because if you remember what he
- 1:05:44was talking about, you know, he talked about how he convinced
- 1:05:46his family, that this was the right move, they sons
- 1:05:49transferred to take from Penn State since then, but then he
- 1:05:52talked about his first, real job was recruiting the staff.
- 1:05:56And is we start looking at this staff you know especially on the
- 1:06:01offensive side of the ball? Yeah talking about Joe Rudolph
- 1:06:04talking about Tyler, moans do Holt.
- 1:06:06Fontelle mines, convincing them. You can see it.
- 1:06:10And you know, you look at those guys and you start hearing
- 1:06:13important, they are a plethora of different personalities.
- 1:06:17Yeah. And I think that's a bigger
- 1:06:18cell. It's because I think in general
- 1:06:22top to bottom. Do you like the offensive staff
- 1:06:25better than the defensive staff? How do you feel about the
- 1:06:29offensive staff? The offensive staff?
- 1:06:34Man, I do like the offensive staff more than the defensive
- 1:06:38staff. Just because as I start looking
- 1:06:41not to knock the defensive staff, don't get me wrong
- 1:06:44between, you know, between JC Mar cheetah and prioleau.
- 1:06:49You've got a lot of years experience.
- 1:06:51Don't forget Quinn and Quinn, it's only about Quinn.
- 1:06:56I mean, we're not twins had some recruiting wins.
- 1:06:59Wins breaking bread hokey Style, I need to quit their Monday
- 1:07:06night when we were in those wings and pizza to give us a
- 1:07:08review of those. Yeah, means and pizza but but
- 1:07:11when you look at it, you look at that defensive staff.
- 1:07:14It's I'm gonna laugh, that's a hokie defense of Staff.
- 1:07:19That's a super bright linebacker coach.
- 1:07:21It's I mean, he's basically the same age Bud was when he took
- 1:07:25over the job. That is a grinder defensive line
- 1:07:28coach think about Charlie wild, think about some of those guys
- 1:07:32that's our mole, right? That's our mold.
- 1:07:35But then think about the offensive staff in, you know,
- 1:07:39especially Joe Rudolph and I love the white Vic because
- 1:07:42Dwight bic is looking at Joe Rudolph and he C JB G. + JB G
- 1:07:47was the online coach back in the 90s who sort of, when we were
- 1:07:50power on the ball. Kenny, oxendine and mashing
- 1:07:54people, he was that guy, look at him.
- 1:07:57Look at bone, you know, still hope left Louisville and one of
- 1:08:00his good friends to come to Brent pry.
- 1:08:04Yep, it's this feel of. That's what our defensive staff
- 1:08:08is. Always look like.
- 1:08:09And it's the looking at the offensive staff is like it's
- 1:08:12never looked like this. It's never looked like this.
- 1:08:16And Lord hasn't looked like this in a long, long time.
- 1:08:19No. And I think that's that's a
- 1:08:22difference is because from a recruiting standpoint, if you're
- 1:08:25recruiting a staff, He had a harder sell getting offensive
- 1:08:30guys to come here. Then he would defensive some
- 1:08:32guys because he is an established defensive coach.
- 1:08:34He's one of the probably five best defensive coordinators in
- 1:08:37the country as last year and you know he was saying all right.
- 1:08:44I'm a deep. I'm a defensive minded.
- 1:08:45Head coach come coach defense. For me.
- 1:08:48That's not his heart of a cell as it is.
- 1:08:51Hey, I'm a first-time head coach in my 50s.
- 1:08:54That's a defensive specialist. Come coach offense for me.
- 1:08:58Exactly. And it just shows you how the
- 1:09:02guy can talk to people. Because he convinced you guys to
- 1:09:07come and I mean, I'll say this, I mean and, you know, I know
- 1:09:10there's other coaches that are like this out there saving for
- 1:09:13one, obviously, but But you know, Brent doesn't seem like a
- 1:09:17guy that's in his early 50s. He's guys a lot more fire in the
- 1:09:23belly than a lot of guys that are that age under percent.
- 1:09:28So and I tell you something that he really had a fire passion
- 1:09:32about was talking about Virginia recruiting Because when he made
- 1:09:36that statement that if we don't know most about Virginia
- 1:09:38recruits were not doing it right.
- 1:09:42I mean, we hear that we see how we've recruited Virginia this
- 1:09:46year and it looks like, you know, he's still parking players
- 1:09:50from Virginia, you know, the the whole Regional footprint recruit
- 1:09:57just it's not bullshit. It it is literally that is his
- 1:10:01game plan because he feels like if he can win this state and
- 1:10:04when the outer that six hour radius and get good players,
- 1:10:08it's going to be the best case. Scenario to rebuild the
- 1:10:12program's. What it was.
- 1:10:13Yeah. And when we look at the the top
- 1:10:1725 players are so in Virginia in this cycle you know?
- 1:10:23Other schools definitely had a head start on us.
- 1:10:26We're making our hey, in that, you know, 12 to 22 range, 12 to
- 1:10:3225 range, that's where we're making our.
- 1:10:34Hey, right now, in terms of, in terms of recruits, we, you know,
- 1:10:40looking forward, we got to get back in the top 10 and I think
- 1:10:44some of that starts with, you know, and he made an emphasis
- 1:10:47he's like we gotta we gotta get Penn State out of this damn
- 1:10:50State. We got to get UNC out of this
- 1:10:52state. We got to keep more of these
- 1:10:55Virginia kids home and you know he was he was a part of doing a
- 1:10:59lot of that making that ground up in Virginia.
- 1:11:03So I mean he understands what it takes.
- 1:11:06I'm hoping he can get the job done as we look to the the 24 in
- 1:11:10the 25 classes coming up the next two years but he knows, he
- 1:11:15knows the blueprint. He just we got to see if we can.
- 1:11:19He can execute it, right? Absolutely, it's something else
- 1:11:22talking about. Ooh, print and his leadership
- 1:11:24styles. He talked a little bit about the
- 1:11:26Bristol Retreat, which we hit on when it happened about a week
- 1:11:29after it happened, but something that he said, said in there
- 1:11:33again, we knew that we heard about.
- 1:11:35He wanted everybody on the same page, same language the same
- 1:11:37thing. So if you walk from Pharrell,
- 1:11:40you know, bones office to, you know, gouveia Windows Office,
- 1:11:46they're preaching the same things.
- 1:11:47That was the first big thing, but the other big thing was this
- 1:11:50and I don't know if you caught it, but it, but it turned my
- 1:11:53Because, what kind of leader is, he talked about?
- 1:11:55He did a lot of the talking and he said, next year, when we do
- 1:11:59this, I don't not, I do not want that.
- 1:12:01I want to hear from everybody, because they took everybody,
- 1:12:07which is crazy, literally, everybody.
- 1:12:09But, but when you hear that, in a guy of a leadership position,
- 1:12:16those guys usually, you know, as long as they take what they hear
- 1:12:21from everyone under them, Em and start figuring out how to work
- 1:12:25it and how to make everybody else successful.
- 1:12:27Usually those guys are the most successful guys.
- 1:12:30Yep. If you can drive that culture
- 1:12:33and you can have that, that very much top-down message, where
- 1:12:38what you hear from the top guys. The same thing that you're
- 1:12:40hearing from the player Personnel guy or even the video
- 1:12:45guy or like, if the message is the same in the message is
- 1:12:48consistent. Then the behaviors are going to
- 1:12:52be the same way. And I'm done by the behaviors of
- 1:12:54the players. Yeah.
- 1:12:56Whether that's getting extra work in.
- 1:12:58Whether that understanding The Playbook understanding, what you
- 1:13:02need to do in certain scenarios whether that's getting an extra
- 1:13:05workout, staying after practice, all those things, those little
- 1:13:11things that drive the culture add up and getting that
- 1:13:17consistent messaging. That consistent way of things
- 1:13:21being taught and Is being emphasized is going to be
- 1:13:24important going forward. Because if you don't get the
- 1:13:27foundation of that, right? For the culture, then you're
- 1:13:30going to start seeing cracks. And I think that's, that's some
- 1:13:33of what happened with the previous regime.
- 1:13:36Is that there wasn't a culture, there wasn't a foundation.
- 1:13:39It was just a collection of ideas that eventually fell
- 1:13:42apart. And it's also the thing of what
- 1:13:46we talked about before, they were there to coach and nothing
- 1:13:50else. And with this staff, you kind of
- 1:13:52see it. They're not there to just coach.
- 1:13:54They understand coaching is the most important part of our job
- 1:13:59but it's not the only part of our job.
- 1:14:01And I'm not talking about teaching the young men and you
- 1:14:04know, helping them prepare for themselves in life, but
- 1:14:07understanding your part of a larger Community, I think that's
- 1:14:11what this coaching group gets more than anything.
- 1:14:13No Brian, let's jump over to this because I want to, I want
- 1:14:17to, I want to get your thoughts first.
- 1:14:20He talked about it IO talked about a lot of things on a nail,
- 1:14:24which one it you the most listening to him.
- 1:14:29So I think him being a realist about the ni L situation for
- 1:14:34Blacksburg. What was the thing because I
- 1:14:40don't think he could have went in there and said, we're going
- 1:14:42to be the the unc's and the Miami's and the Clemson's on
- 1:14:49this ni L thing out the gate. I think that's the goal.
- 1:14:52But I don't think that's something that we're going to
- 1:14:56get to right away. And he said that he doesn't want
- 1:15:00in il to be. The reason that a player picks
- 1:15:01Virginia Tech and I get that, I think there might be situations.
- 1:15:06Oceans Where there would be an exception to that depending on
- 1:15:10the player, depending on their caliber, especially for an
- 1:15:12in-state player. But in most terms, I don't want
- 1:15:18a player to pick Virginia Tech just because they are giving the
- 1:15:22largest in il. I, but as he said, we must be
- 1:15:26competitive. We got to be in the ballpark.
- 1:15:29So if somebody's getting something from from pit, we got
- 1:15:35to say, all right, here's what we can offer from an ni L
- 1:15:39perspective from from from these collectives here, but we also
- 1:15:44sell in the University as well. And you know, when we talk about
- 1:15:50the reason, the player pick something in il definitely is
- 1:15:52going to be in the discussion, but there's got it wrong.
- 1:15:54It's going to be a piece of the pie, right?
- 1:15:56He can't even some player, some players, it's a, it's a big.
- 1:15:59Bigger piece, and some of the smaller, it can't be half the
- 1:16:02pie, but, but it needs to leave, you know, we know it's going to
- 1:16:05be in there somewhere. Well, he said we got to be
- 1:16:08competitive in it and he said and he just straight up called
- 1:16:12out fans, old and young. The line basically said, you've
- 1:16:15got to support the athletes in some way.
- 1:16:18And, you know, we saw today with Triumph and IL with Dax Dwayne,
- 1:16:24Caleb. Who my missing?
- 1:16:26I'm missing somebody. Everything efforting.
- 1:16:33Yeah. And I think, as you're speaking
- 1:16:34on that, I think the big thing that they've been focused on
- 1:16:37this offseason within IL is more of Take care of you.
- 1:16:40The guys that are on your roster right now.
- 1:16:43Yep. Malaga Malaga.
- 1:16:44I got delicate with. Yeah.
- 1:16:47So I think I think that's been the focus.
- 1:16:50This offseason is kind of taking care of some of that because
- 1:16:53there wasn't that type of foundation put in place it was
- 1:16:57very much a it seemed like before it was like here are some
- 1:17:03tools to help you within IL but it was very much a, your own
- 1:17:06your own in terms of what you are able to do with it.
- 1:17:10And now we've got collectives that the school is actively
- 1:17:13partner with. And this is helping really
- 1:17:16facilitate a better relationship with those athletes from an ni o
- 1:17:22perspective. And I'm hoping that we continue
- 1:17:24to build on that and Triumph is doing a good job.
- 1:17:30Shout out be Hill and those guys.
- 1:17:32Yeah that are part of that. And yeah, we but we definitely
- 1:17:37got to keep that moving forward. And and those that have the
- 1:17:40Pasady to help with that. You know, that needs to be
- 1:17:44something that's, that's going out there just like me looking
- 1:17:48to drive for 25 and I hope you Starship fun.
- 1:17:51I mean, if you're not doing it, we're going to get left behind
- 1:17:56very true, not not saying that. You know, it's got to be the
- 1:18:02first and foremost thing, the most important thing.
- 1:18:05But but as process, we got to be competitive.
- 1:18:09It got to be, we're not going. If we're not competitive, we're
- 1:18:11going to keep falling behind true.
- 1:18:14All right. Well Brian, let's as we start
- 1:18:15wrapping up here tonight, we actually got the opportunity.
- 1:18:20We stood in line. We're fans you, we met the head
- 1:18:24coach. We were there was probably
- 1:18:26three, four minutes, talk with him, cleaned a little beer, With
- 1:18:30him in what you said earlier. About the recruits, you felt
- 1:18:34with us because the gentleman before us, he wanted him to send
- 1:18:37a video to a friend, right? And he got on the video and he
- 1:18:40did it with us. We just we just shot to shit
- 1:18:43with him and it just felt like a buddy, you know, he claimed the
- 1:18:47Bears with us. We, you know, said three or four
- 1:18:49things here and there and he's just having a conversation with
- 1:18:52us. It felt so it didn't feel like
- 1:18:58he was trying to do it. He just felt like he looked at
- 1:19:02us and said these are a couple. Say what we are.
- 1:19:06We're probably 30 year old guys out for a night together.
- 1:19:09Have some fun hokey fans. I'm a I'm going to have fun with
- 1:19:12them. Yeah, it was awesome.
- 1:19:16Yeah. I mean, he definitely
- 1:19:17understands how to read the people that he's interacting
- 1:19:21with when he when he talks about building relationships.
- 1:19:25I think being a guy that can read folks quickly and and
- 1:19:31understand how to approach them that that's a skill.
- 1:19:36And a lot of times it's a skill that's very hard to learn and
- 1:19:40he's got it. You know whether that translates
- 1:19:44to two more wins on the recruiting Trail Forest, long
- 1:19:47term is to be seen but in terms of just interacting with the
- 1:19:50fans and being the type of coach that gets the fanbase
- 1:19:55enthusiastic about what they're doing, I mean we got a winner on
- 1:20:01that front. So we'll see if we can keep Keep
- 1:20:06the wind's coming as we roll into the season on that front
- 1:20:10but it's true. Well, I think as we were I can't
- 1:20:14remember. I said it to you give the guy
- 1:20:16six years. I mean, because we are in a
- 1:20:19rebuild. We're in a very tumultuous time.
- 1:20:21You can't give him three years and expect him to be at nine.
- 1:20:24Ten wins a year. If he doesn't wonderful, if it
- 1:20:28doesn't, I'm in for the Long Haul with this one.
- 1:20:32But another thing notice Pronto, we had our moment.
- 1:20:34We talk with him because Minutes, we went on, we got our
- 1:20:37dinner. He was there.
- 1:20:38Good. Our he did not have to be there
- 1:20:41after after he finished speaking after he finished and just
- 1:20:45talking to people taking pictures sign and having a
- 1:20:47conversation. Just again, that's where we
- 1:20:49noticed. Whoever you were is who he was
- 1:20:55going to adapt to it. I think that's why he's such a
- 1:20:57good recruiter because he is going to adapt and figure out
- 1:21:01what's my Baseline for you? What's my Baseline for you?
- 1:21:05Yeah. I'm still going to be me, but
- 1:21:09I'm going to figure out what part of me and you connect the
- 1:21:11best. And when you have a guy like
- 1:21:13that, you know what, you always say brown bat for one day, if
- 1:21:17Wednesday would have just had a little personality, he would
- 1:21:19have got a little more Slack. Prai has the personality and if
- 1:21:24we win something like six game, if we only won five games, I
- 1:21:27think some people are going to say he walked into a shitty
- 1:21:29situation. This year, you know, the
- 1:21:32recruiting Bridges have been burned all over the state all
- 1:21:34over the region. This guy's got to rebuild job to
- 1:21:37do. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:21:39Bridges burned. All over the State roster in
- 1:21:42shambles. It's a bad one.
- 1:21:46Two punch, right? You got you had to rebuild a
- 1:21:48roster, but you also have to rebuild the relationships to
- 1:21:50help you build that roster. So he's doing a good job of
- 1:21:54laying that Foundation that we're talking about birth from a
- 1:21:57culture standpoint and from a relationship standpoint with
- 1:22:01players coaches, all the all the folks in the state and all the
- 1:22:05folks in the footprint. So I think we're on the right
- 1:22:08track from that perspective, you will see long term how the fit
- 1:22:14is, but I think in terms of just You know who he is, as a coach.
- 1:22:19And that that side, I think we got to, we got to hit here.
- 1:22:22We got a big hit here. All right, Brian.
- 1:22:24Anything breaking over the last little while here.
- 1:22:30I don't see anything man. I think we're good.
- 1:22:32All right, let's wrap it. Wraps up this episode of The
