- 5:45Campy Campanera's stepping on the batter's box.
- 5:48Father's ballpark is really alive today.
- 5:52Beautiful sight to behold.
- 5:55the largest crowd of the year. Campy Campanera's hitting 2-29.

- 7:09the year before for the Cubs he won 14 and lost 10.
- 7:13Two strikes and a ball. His brother Phil is a knuckleball pitcher.
- 7:16Joe is a fastball and slider pitcher.
- 7:19Here's a curveball foul. Two strikes and a ball.
- 7:24Nobody on, nobody out, bottom half of the first inning.
- 7:29This big crowd is eager, hungry for a chance to explode here.
- 7:36the A's trying for their fourth in a row.
- 7:40For the first time this year, they're four games above 500.
- 7:43the pitch. There's a line drive and a right-hander northward going over, over, over, makes the gap.
- 7:48Pimp and error. Wind hard to Jim Northrow.
- 7:54That's one out. Here's Salif Malou, hitting.338.
- 7:58Something out of four last night.

- 8:15Especially in a setting like this.
- 8:19Joe Necron gets ready to pitch to Alou.
- 8:22Curveball and there's a strike call.
- 8:26Salif is facing Joe Necron for the first time initially, but he faced him many times internationally.
- 8:34One strike, no balls, a fifth.
- 8:37Long and top straight up, the catcher Bill Brand.
- 8:40Shading his eyes in the sun and makes the gap.
- 8:43Two up, two down. Here's Reggie Jackson.
- 8:46What have I got?
- 8:49Most of the reception he'll get.
- 8:54Reggie starting in the game now for the first time in about a week.
- 9:01Got a fine hand from the crowd as he steps up.
- 9:06Two men off, nobody on. Reggie with a great shot.
- 9:10Here's a fifth.
- 9:13I think it's just high and got away from freehand.
- 9:18One ball, no strikes.
- 9:21Let's see now, the play down fire, Merrill Anthony.
- 9:24I think Mayo Smith thinks that it tipped the bat. He's coming out.
- 9:28Now he's going to talk to Bill Freehand.
- 9:31Just tipped his glove and not his bat.
- 9:34One ball, no strikes.
- 9:36Merrill was showing how that ball took off.
- 9:40It hit right up over the shoulder of Freehand and hit right in the mask.
- 9:45All right, Reggie waiting now. One ball, no strikes.
- 9:48Left hand hitter, big number nine on the box with his uniform.
- 9:52Oh, this crowd was really exploding. He got a hold of one.

- 10:10Hits out of a wide straddle, holds the bat at the end.
- 10:13Here's the fifth.
- 10:15Ground ball to the second baseman. Up with it.
- 10:17Now he's kicking the throw. Still getting it.
- 10:21Six McCallops, the ball was hit sharply, went to his left.
- 10:24Knocked the ball down, recovered and threw him up.
- 10:27So each team has been retired in order.
- 10:30Nothing across at the end of one full inning. Destroyed nothing, the A's nothing.
- 10:35Another game victory. These five and five.
- 10:37He's pitched two shutouts, shut out the Angels, and he shut out the Angels.
- 10:42Norm Cash hitting 242, five homers and 18 runs batted in, one out of three last night.
- 10:48Leaves it off against Chuck Dopp.
- 10:50the outfield deep and a shade towards right.
- 10:55How did the left field stand, the pounding of those bats in unison?
- 11:05Sounds like a jailbreak.
- 11:08There's a wind up the pitch, and it's a fastball low.
- 11:12One ball, no strikes. Cash leading it off here in the second inning.
- 11:19On the side. the delivery, here it is.
- 11:23Long and a high pop foul over here in the stands.
- 11:25Fernandez chasing it, he may have a play, and he does nicely against the screen.

- 11:34That's one away and it brings up Willie Horton.
- 11:37Horton hitting 313.
- 11:39Six homers, 39 runs batted in.
- 11:42the run he drove in last night was the 500th of his America League career.
- 11:47Willie Horton.
- 11:51Powerfully built.
- 11:53Boy, he's so reminiscent of Roy Campanella when he stands at the plate.
- 12:01190 pounder, here's the pitch by Dobson and it's high.
- 12:05One ball, no strikes.
- 12:07One man gone.
- 12:09Ball game in the second inning.
- 12:11Nothing and nothing.
- 12:14Willie Horton, who hit 262 last year,
- 12:19is batting 313 this season.
- 12:21Now the pitch by Dobson.
- 12:23One more, fly ball, right field, Reggie Jackson on the run.

- 13:10And it's outside.
- 13:12Ball two.
- 13:21Two balls, no strikes.
- 13:24Two went out, nobody on the pitch.
- 13:26He had a cut and he missed it.
- 13:28Boy, he was really going for the downs on that one.
- 13:32A colorful crowd here.
- 13:34Beautiful coliseum.
- 13:37Perfect day for baseball.
- 13:41You know, Phil Wrigley might have something at all at that.
- 13:44Baseball is meant to be played in the daytime.
- 13:46Unfortunately, economics don't make that possible everywhere.
- 13:55So many people have to work during the day to be depriving them of a chance to see baseball.
- 14:00Here's the pitch, one ground ball, hit it for right base in.
- 14:05Jim Northrup becomes the first base runner with a ground single in the right.
- 14:09Here's Bill Freehand to catch it, hitting 229.
- 14:14Nate Homer's 24 runs batted in.
- 14:24Freehand will be 29 in November, went to the University of Michigan.
- 14:29Biggest year in the home run to Brown was in 68 when he hit 25.
- 14:34Right-handed batter.
- 14:35So far this year he's hit 8, straddles the plate, waiting.
- 14:40Now to stretch the pitch on the way.
- 14:43Dobson's delivery, here it is.
- 14:45Curve in there, a beautiful strike off.
- 14:49One strike, no ball.
- 14:51Elliott Maddox, the third baseman, will be next.

- 15:05He foul-tipped on a half swing.
- 15:07He tried to stop.
- 15:08the ball tipped the end of the bat.
- 15:11So it's two strikes and nothing.
- 15:13Two men are gone.
- 15:16Bill Freehand at the plate.
- 15:19A big crowd on hand here.
- 15:27Now to signal.
- 15:30A leadoff first base by Northrup.
- 15:33Here's the pitch.
- 15:34And it's outside.
- 15:38Sounds like one of those prison movies.
- 15:41Where you have inmates protesting, you know.
- 15:48That's the way there's rhythmic pounding of the bats out in the
- 15:50let field stands.
- 15:53Two strikes and a ball.
- 15:57Now the pitch.
- 15:58Here it is.

- 16:19Right hand batter waiting.
- 16:21the delivery now.
- 16:22Hey, ho, he's got him picked off.
- 16:24Now he throws down to Green running him back towards first base.
- 16:28Two centers running him the other way.
- 16:30And Campanella's backing off.
- 16:33Play goes to Batsy, to Green, to Minter, to Campanella.
- 16:40One, three, one, four, three, six.
- 16:45If you're scoring.
- 16:46No runs, one hit, no errors, nobody left.
- 16:49They move into the bottom half of the second inning, no score.
- 16:54June 21st is the day father's flair.
- 16:57Huh?
- 16:58It's Father's Day.
- 16:59And the big gift this year is Mr. Levi's stay-press slacks with the gentleman's flair.
- 17:05You're kidding.
- 17:06Levi's for us dad types with a flair?
- 17:09Sure, why not?
- 17:10More dads are joining the fashion scene every day.
- 17:13the same Mr. Levi's styling, fuller cut for extra comfort.
- 17:17Get on Harry and of course besides the new flair style, there's a great selection for dads.
- 17:22Traditional belt loop models, continental waistbands, and a rousing range of fabrics, patterns, and colors.
- 17:29And stay-press.
- 17:31Indeed, they never need ironing.
- 17:33Stay fresh and neat all day, even through double headers.
- 17:37Now here's the perfect dad to gift for the man who has everything, gals,
- 17:41because he never has enough Mr. Levi's stay-press slacks.
- 17:45So take a tip, get him two fairs at your favorite men's store.
- 17:53Bottom half of the second inning, Sal Bando, Don Mincher, and Frank Fernandez will be coming up.
- 18:00Ball game of the second inning.
- 18:04Nothing and nothing.
- 18:07Baltimore trailing at Milwaukee 6-4 on the bottom of the eighth.
- 18:13Yankees out in front of the White Sox, 3-1.
- 18:16Those Yankees could move to within four and a half games.
- 18:23Sal Bando hitting 267, facing Joe Nicrow.
- 18:29Bando one out of three last night.
- 18:32Out of time, Joe Nicrow ready.
- 18:34the right-hander's pitch is on the way.
- 18:37It's a fastball over the wall, ball one.
- 18:39One ball, no strike.
- 18:41Nobody on, nobody out. Ball game of the second inning.
- 18:46Now the signal, Jimmins.
- 18:48the delivery, here it is.
- 18:50There's a line drive off the pitcher's ruck.
- 18:53Through, in the charge center.
- 18:56Let's see, that will probably be a base hit.
- 19:04And there on McAuliffe.
- 19:06A hot shot deflected by Nicrow to McAuliffe in a wind-blow of his leg.
- 19:15That will bring up Don Mincher.
- 19:20Mincher hitting 256 on one out of four last night.
- 19:26He's had 12 homers this season, driven in 31 runs.
- 19:32Left-hand batter, digging in.
- 19:34Joe Nicrow gets that.
- 19:37the stretch.
- 19:39the pitch on the way.
- 19:40Into the dirt, good stop by Bill Brand.
- 19:43Kept that ball from going to the screen.
- 19:46Maddox is playing third base.
- 19:49Guterres in charge.
- 19:50McAuliffe in second.
- 19:52Cash in first.
- 19:56Don Mincher digging in.
- 19:58Joe Nicrow ready.
- 20:00At the belt, the fifth.
- 20:02Here it is.

- 20:05Ball two.
- 20:11A lot of youngsters on the outside looking in and sitting on top of the outside wall.
- 20:18They're not getting a bat that way, but they're at least seeing the ball game.
- 20:21the stretch, the pitch.
- 20:23Strike over the outside corner of the knee.
- 20:25Breeze is blowing towards left field.
- 20:28Two or three of those guys will fall in this ballpark before it's all over.

- 20:38Here's the pitch bouncing ball.
- 20:40Two cash, he's going to throw the second one out.
- 20:43Back over the first.

- 20:49Here comes Mayo Smith after arguing with Red Flattery.
- 20:53They thought they had doubled up Mincher.
- 20:56A force out from Cash to Gutteran.
- 21:02Mincher barely beating the throw at first base.
- 21:05Here's Frank Fernandez hitting 271.
- 21:09Five homers 12 runs about at it.
- 21:12Mayo Smith protesting vehemently and now walks off the field.
- 21:20Mayo stopped smoking a few months ago.
- 21:23He has most people who stop and gain a little weight.
- 21:31But on him it looks good.
- 21:34One on, second inning.
- 21:37Bobby Hoffman coaching third.

- 22:08Now the pitch on the way.
- 22:15A bouncing ball on a third base line.
- 22:17It may be a tough play.
- 22:18Here's Maddox.
- 22:19Oh wow.
- 22:20He's a right field corner.
- 22:21Here's a run around the third.

- 22:25Here we come.
- 22:26Here's a throw to a play.
- 22:27Flo Payne.
- 22:28the A's are leading one to nothing.
- 22:41That's Fernandez lined up a third base on the play.
- 22:51How are they going to roll that one?
- 22:52They call it an air all the way.
- 22:58Why Maddox in a swinging front had a charge in,
- 23:01picked the ball up on the run and put underhand it.
- 23:05He threw the ball wildly past Cash.
- 23:08And Lynch is scored all the way from first base.

- 25:25Three nothing out of three last night.
- 25:32So with one official hit in the inning, the A's have scored twice.
- 25:37And the right handed batter.
- 25:42Joe Mitro.
- 25:43Big 19 on the back with his gray uniform.
- 25:48Green waiting.
- 25:49Chokes up on the bat a little bit.
- 25:52the stretch.
- 25:55the throw to first the runner back.
- 26:01Really making a racket out there in the left field stand.
- 26:04It's not good.
- 26:07Here's the pitch.
- 26:08There goes the runner.
- 26:09Here's the play.
- 26:10They're going to get him maybe.
- 26:11He's out.
- 26:15A good throw from Frehan.
- 26:17To McCollum.
- 26:18And Monday trying to steal his cut down.
- 26:25Green the batter with a kind of strike one.
- 26:28Now Frehan, even though Monday had a great jump on first base,
- 26:32he really gunned him out of there.
- 26:36Here's a pitch on the way.
- 26:38Long and he filed it back straight to.
- 26:41Two strikes and nothing.
- 26:43On Dick Green.
- 26:51the outfield plays him straight away.
- 26:55Two strikes, no balls.
- 27:00Now the pitch.
- 27:02Long and he filed it back.
- 27:16Two strikes and nothing.
- 27:18Green the hitter.
- 27:20Two to nothing in favor of the A's.
- 27:22Here's the pitch.
- 27:24And it's a curve ball a little bit high on outside.
- 27:28A little bit of a play.
- 27:30Here's a real last year at Summerfield.
- 27:39Here's the pitch.
- 27:41High five on the right field.
- 27:42Will be caught.
- 27:43K-line directly back.
- 27:44Under it he has.
- 27:45Green flies the K-line.
- 27:47But a very good inning.
- 27:49Two runs.
- 27:50One hit.
- 27:51Two errors were charged.
- 27:53Nobody left.
- 27:54And at the end of two full innings,
- 27:56it's nothing.
- 27:58You know a lot of people sell themselves short
- 28:00whenever they travel on the road.
- 28:02They settle for just any service station
- 28:03when it's time to stop for gasoline.
- 28:05Or maybe they'll take potluck
- 28:07when they need a place to stay for the night.
- 28:09And more often than not,
- 28:10when an emergency arises they just don't know where to turn.
- 28:13Well in this day and age that just doesn't make sense.
- 28:16You see with one ARCO credit card
- 28:18from Atlantic Richfield,
- 28:20a man can charge gasoline, repairs, sewing, food, and lodging.
- 28:23He can charge a car or truck and always be sure
- 28:26he'll be dealing with reliable people.
- 28:28Honored at over 24,000
- 28:30Atlantic Richfield service stations from coast to coast,
- 28:33an ARCO card can bring you food and lodging
- 28:35at any Ramada, Treadway, or Friendship Inn,
- 28:38at any Hyatt House Hotel or Hyatt Lodge,
- 28:41or at any Travel Lodge,
- 28:43Emmons Walker, or Superior Motel.
- 28:45So if you've been selling yourself short,
- 28:47why not stop in at a Richfield station
- 28:49and apply for a new ARCO card?
- 28:51And get the credit you deserve.
- 28:57Well pause for identification.
- 28:59This is the Oakland A's baseball network.
- 29:01Right on the nose at 2 o'clock,
- 29:03KNBR in San Francisco.
- 29:12Harry Carrey and Monty Moore from the Coliseum.
- 29:15Here's the pitch on the way, swung on.
- 29:17By Bill Frehand, a high pop foul over near the stands
- 29:20and out of play.
- 29:24the gentleman makes a fine catch
- 29:27with that pop foul behind the Tigers dugout.
- 29:34So now the youngster in the group has the bat,
- 29:37the oldster has the ball.
- 29:39All they gotta do is swipe a glove
- 29:41and they got themselves a ballgame.
- 29:45Here's the pitch on the way,
- 29:47and it's flowing outside.
- 29:50One ball, one strike.
- 29:53Top of the third, Bill Frehand.
- 30:00Right hand hither waiting.
- 30:02Now the delivery.
- 30:04There it goes, way back.
- 30:06It might be out of here.
- 30:08It could be Monday near the wall now.
- 30:10He's gonna get it when he does.
- 30:12Frehand flies deep to Monday.
- 30:17It's right away, center field.
- 30:19One gone.
- 30:21That ball was in on the nose, but it didn't carry
- 30:24as well as the ball had been carrying during batting practice.
- 30:29Here's Elliott Maddox.
- 30:3222 years old, 5'11, 180 pounds.
- 30:36He's got two homers, five runs about it,
- 30:38and hitting 217.
- 30:41Maddox, the pitch to him.
- 30:44He takes the curveball outside.
- 30:49Two to nothing.
- 30:55Maddox from Eastern Orange, New Jersey.
- 30:57Frank Fernandez needs a new glove.
- 31:02Maddox went to the University of Michigan.
- 31:05He's only been in baseball two years.
- 31:08He played at Lakeland in 68 and Rocky Mountain in 69.
- 31:1522 years old.
- 31:19From the University of Michigan.
- 31:21the wind up the pitch.
- 31:23There's a smash up the middle, and it's a base.
- 31:26They've got a great stop by Frehand,
- 31:29and the ball deflected to Campanaro,
- 31:31so would have had a play.
- 31:33Had he been able to pick the ball up cleanly,
- 31:35that would have been something.
- 31:37But it goes for an infield hit.
- 31:40Green took a headlong dive for the ball,
- 31:44deflected it with his glove.
- 31:46Campanaro was moving over that way.
- 31:49It was almost deflected right into his hands,
- 31:52in which case he might have had a play at first base.
- 31:55Here's Maddox then on first, and Joe Negros the man.
- 32:00Right handed hitter.
- 32:03Negros had five hits, including a double and a triple,
- 32:06not a bad hitting pitcher.
- 32:08the delivery, he bounced ball off to the right.
- 32:11One strike and no ball.
- 32:13One man out.
- 32:15Ball game on the top of the third.
- 32:16the A's are leading two to nothing.
- 32:19the year's biggest crowd.
- 32:22the biggest crowd since opening day.
- 32:25the A's third year in Oakland.
- 32:30It'll be the largest crowd since that first game they played here.
- 32:34Now the stretch to fifth.
- 32:36He butts it, nicely.
- 32:38the only play by Dobson.
- 32:40He tags the runner coming into it.
- 32:42A sacrifice.
- 32:44Dobson unassisted.
- 32:47So here is Dick McCollum.
- 32:50He was nothing out of four last night.
- 32:55Popped up his first time today.
- 32:57We're in the top of the third inning.
- 32:59Two to nothing in favor of the A's.
- 33:07Dick McCollum.
- 33:11Zigs in.
- 33:16Now Dobson is ready.
- 33:21McCollum facing him head on.
- 33:24Now the pitch.
- 33:26Did it hit him or did he foul tip it?
- 33:28I think he foul tipped it.
- 33:30McCollum has his back to the catcher.
- 33:34He did foul tip it for a strike.
- 33:36He has his back to the catcher.
- 33:41Facing the pitcher head on.
- 33:46Hitting out of a wide straddle.
- 33:48And then he raises his right foot high in the air before he swings.
- 33:52Here's the pitch.
- 33:53Whoa, did he miss strike two.
- 33:56Two strikes and nothing.
- 33:58Bottom of the second inning.
- 34:00Top of the third inning.
- 34:01In the bottom of the second the A's got two to take their two to nothing lead.
- 34:07Now there are two out.
- 34:12Scoring position in second base.
- 34:14Elliott Maddox.
- 34:16Dick McCollum waiting.
- 34:18the stretch.
- 34:20the pitch on the way.
- 34:22And here it is.
- 34:26Outside.
- 34:27Boy Dobson threw the ball exactly where Fernandez was poised.
- 34:31Two strikes and nothing.
- 34:33Fernandez moved to the outside point.
- 34:35Fernandez moved to the outside part of the plate.
- 34:39Held his glove about two inches outside the corner of the plate and that's exactly where Dobson threw it.
- 34:47Two strikes and a ball.
- 34:50the idea with two strikes is to get the ball close enough to tempt the other but not make a good pitch.
- 34:54Here's a curve a little high.
- 34:58Two balls, two strikes.
- 35:00Dobson really working on a tough left handed hitter, Dick McCollum.
- 35:06Out of sign.
- 35:10Signal gibbet.
- 35:12From the belt.
- 35:14the delivery, here it is.
- 35:16Ground ball hit down to green.
- 35:18He's got it.
- 35:19Over to Mitcher.
- 35:20In time to retire to side.
- 35:22McCollum is still hit with the Missouri.
- 35:24Nothing out of trick.
- 35:26And it still runs.
- 35:28One hit, no errors.
- 35:29We move now to the bottom half of the third inning.
- 35:32the A's two, the Tigers nothing.
- 35:35Hotline, a new development in the Paris store.

- 36:31for all the news on the NBC radio network.
- 36:35KNBR 680, San Francisco.
- 36:40We move into the bottom half of the third inning, two to nothing in favor of the A's.
- 36:46Chuck Dobson will be leading it off against Joe Negros.
- 36:51It'll be Dobson, Campanella and Alou and if anybody gets on, Reggie Jackson in the center.
- 36:57Two to nothing in favor of the A's.
- 37:01Two weeks from today we have a Hellman Day.
- 37:11Two weeks from today will be Hellman Day.
- 37:16This past day is certainly a howling success of Paul Barker's jam.
- 37:23A lot of people still haven't been able to get in.
- 37:27Here's a pitch to Dobson and it's low and outside.
- 37:32One ball and no strikes.
- 37:34I think they ran out of bats.
- 37:37They had over 30,000 bats.
- 37:39They've already run out of them.
- 37:42Here's a pitch on the way.
- 37:44Swung off by Dobson, a high fly ball to the left.
- 37:47Willie Horton under the ball.
- 37:49Thanks, Rick.
- 37:52Here's Roy Campanella.
- 37:57Bert Campanella.
- 38:01I said every time I look at that art and I have Roy Campanella on my mind.
- 38:05He looks so much like him.
- 38:07He's built exactly like Campi.
- 38:11He ends up in the play just exactly like Campanella used to do.
- 38:16Campi, of course, now has the result of a tragic auto accident
- 38:21for years has been in a wheelchair.
- 38:26We saw him at the Hall of Fame induction a couple of years ago in Cooperstown.
- 38:36So Campi Campanella, right-handed hitter.
- 38:39the pitch.
- 38:42And it's a strike call.
- 38:43It can't be lined out.
- 38:45But Northrop is first time up.
- 38:47Matt Ox playing a shallow third base.
- 38:50Felipe Alou will be next.
- 38:53Now the wind up the pitch.
- 38:56Offed up in the short center field, he'll be caught.
- 38:58Northrop coming in under the ball and he has it.
- 39:02Campanella flies to Northrop and short center.
- 39:07That's two out and brings up Felipe Alou.
- 39:10Billy Foul for the catcher is first up.
- 39:38Ball game in the third.
- 39:43Necro gets his signal.
- 39:47Now the pitch on the way.
- 39:50As the high flag wall in the left, it'll be caught.
- 39:54Horton's waiting.
- 39:55He takes it to retire to south.
- 39:58One, two, three, nothing across.
- 40:00That was an easy inning for Necro.
- 40:02And at the end of three, the Oakland A's to the Detroit Tigers, nothing.
- 40:07When Atlantic Richfield Company discovered oil on the north slope of Alaska,
- 40:15the place we call the Arco Circle, it took 100,000 tons of supplies and equipment to get started.
- 40:22It took 100,000 tons of pipe, cement, drill, gravel, putt, gloves, putts, heaters, tractors, ladders, radios, and orange juice.
- 40:33It took planes that carry 48,000 pounds and cost $4,000 a trip.
- 40:38It took 160 flights to set up one camp and five flight days to keep it going.
- 40:45It took a specially constructed airstrip.
- 40:48In short, it took the biggest civilian airlift industry.
- 40:52At Atlantic Richfield, we went all the way to Alaska so we can provide your local Richfield dealer
- 40:58with the finest Arco petroleum products for your car.
- 41:03We're moving to the top of the fourth.
- 41:09the A's are out in front.
- 41:10Two to nothing.
- 41:11I'm moving in to tell you all about it.
- 41:12Here's Monty Moore.
- 41:13Okay, Harry Gutierrez.
- 41:16We'll lead it off in the fourth inning.
- 41:17Dobson has allowed two singles so far.
- 41:19That's all.
- 41:21Chuck's had some tremendous games against the Detroit Tigers.
- 41:25He's not had a big winning record against them, but he's always pitched well against this club.
- 41:30Gutierrez hit the plate.
- 41:31Here's a pitch to him.
- 41:33Breaking ball is outside.
- 41:35One ball and no strikes.
- 41:37Boy, we understand people are still trying to get into the parking lots in areas around the ballpark.
- 41:44They're empty seats.
- 41:46What you got here?
- 41:47Here's a one-oh pitch.
- 41:49Right in there a call strike.
- 41:51I think the seats are sold, but people apparently haven't gotten to them yet.
- 41:59One ball, one strike count on the right-handed batting Gutierrez.
- 42:05A pitch swing and a bowtip strike two.
- 42:09Merle Hanson needs to play it up or I believe caught another one in the face, man.
- 42:13His family is here today.
- 42:14I met his wife and two lovely little daughters before the game.
- 42:19About eight and ten years old.
- 42:21They're here from Maryville where he makes his home.
- 42:24They're seeing their daddy banged around a little bit today.
- 42:29That old face, man.
- 42:32Holding in there.
- 42:34One ball, two strikes.
- 42:35Actually, this Gutierrez we're calling him, G-U-T-I-E-R-R-E-Z.
- 42:40He would pronounce it Gutierrez with the I.
- 42:44Here's a pitch.
- 42:46Oh, that one looked pretty good.
- 42:47Must have been high at ball two.
- 42:49Curveball.
- 42:52the I in the name right after the T-G-U-T-I would have to be pronounced Gutierrez with a double R-E-Z.
- 43:01But he says he doesn't care.
- 43:05Here's a two-two pitch.
- 43:07Curveball lying in the left center field.
- 43:09the Lue's going to have to hurry.
- 43:10He's over there.
- 43:11He's got it.
- 43:12Now there's one out in inning number four and the batter is Al Kaili.
- 43:21Al's been on a little bit of a hot streak.
- 43:26Backed his 2500th career hit last night.
- 43:30There are two other Detroit Tiger players who had more hits than he has had.
- 43:36But he has had more hits than all other active American League players.
- 43:40Fitch time, low for a ball.
- 43:48Only two players in the American League who are still active have hit more home runs in their career than Al.
- 43:54Dobson's one and all pitch time.
- 43:57Strike on the outside corner by knee-high.
- 44:02Boy, what a beautiful sight this place is filled up.
- 44:07the biggest crowd since Casey Stingleday here.
- 44:12Here's the wind, a one-one pitch.
- 44:14Fastball lying to right.
- 44:15He's got a base hit.
- 44:16It takes one up and Jackson flags it down.
- 44:19Kaili is on.
- 44:20He hit that ball right where it was pitched.
- 44:24Man on for Norm Cash, first baseman who hit seven home runs against the A's last season.
- 44:32There were a lot more big ones.
- 44:40Norm Cash.
- 44:44This guy has a barrel of laughs.
- 44:45He's a lot of fun.
- 44:46Tremendous sense of humor.
- 44:47He's hitting 242.
- 44:49There's a high fly ball in a deep right field.
- 44:52Way back goes Jackson.
- 44:53Back goes Mundy.
- 44:54They'll neither one get it.
- 44:55It's over the fence.
- 44:56We've got a tie ball game.
- 45:02Norm Cash hits the first pitch to him over the right center field wall to tie it up.
- 45:07And it's just that simple with a long ball.
- 45:10Boy, I'll tell you, he really does rip the A's.
- 45:16That's his sixth home run of the year.
- 45:18And the sixth that Chuck Thompson has given up in 81 innings.
- 45:27Cash was talking before the ball game around the batter's case during batting practice how he hated to hit against Thompson.
- 45:33This guy's really something.
- 45:35Here's a pitch down to Willie Horton.
- 45:37It's high and outside for a ball.
- 45:44Boy, he can be going long and not do anything and get to Oakland and just wear the baseball out.
- 45:50And they're all just like that.
- 45:51They put his club back in there.
- 45:52Horton takes a strike.
- 45:53It's one and one.
- 45:55Boy, Willie's starting to clobber that ball, too.
- 45:57He's hitting 311.
- 46:06the wind is a high fly ball in a deep right field.
- 46:08Way back goes Jackson.
- 46:10Back goes Mundy.
- 46:11They'll neither one get it.
- 46:12It's over the fence.
- 46:13We've got a tie ball game.
- 46:19Norm Cash hits the first pitch to him over the right center field wall to tie it up.
- 46:23And it's just that simple with a long ball.
- 46:26Boy, I'll tell you, he really does rip the A's.
- 46:32That's his sixth home run of the year.
- 46:35And the sixth that Chuck Thompson has given up in 81 innings.
- 46:44Cash was talking before the ball game around the batter's cage during batting practice how he hated to hit against Thompson.
- 46:50This guy's really something.
- 46:52Here's a pitch down to Willie Horton.
- 46:53It's high and outside for a ball.
- 47:01Boy, he can be going long and not do anything and get to Oakland and just wear the baseball out.
- 47:06And they're all just like that.
- 47:07They put his club back in there.
- 47:09Horton takes a strike.
- 47:10It's one and one.
- 47:12Boy, Willie's starting to clobber that ball, too.
- 47:14He's hitting 311.
- 47:22the wind is blowing towards right center field.
- 47:25And that ball needed just enough help from the wind to get out.
- 47:30Now the 1-1 pitch.
- 47:32There's a pop foul ball back.
- 47:35And it's not going to quite get upstairs.
- 47:40Count is a ball and two strikes.
- 47:53One out, nobody on.
- 48:00Norm Cash took care of that with a two-run homer.
- 48:03Here's a pitch to Horton.
- 48:04It's outside, ball two.
- 48:11the A's play here again tomorrow afternoon at 1-30.
- 48:13It should be a good game.
- 48:14Catfish Hunter against Mickey Lowlitch.
- 48:22Two balls, two strikes.
- 48:29Here's the pitch.
- 48:30High, ball three.
- 48:40So following the home run, Thompson pitching carefully to Willie Horton
- 48:43as work to count full at three and two.
- 48:55Big powerful luck feeler, the Tigers.
- 48:57Move that bat back and forth to get ready for the delivery.
- 49:00And here it comes.
- 49:01Swinging strike three, Thompson through the ball by.
- 49:06That's Chuck's first strikeout today.
- 49:09And out here's Jim Northrup who had the first base hit, a single to right in the second inning.
- 49:19Northrup, a left-handed batter who hit four grand slam home runs one season.
- 49:25the figure the Tigers had two years back when they were world champions.
- 49:29Pitch time is a curve in their call strike.
- 49:43Here's Thompson winding again at the pitch, way inside.
- 49:48One ball and one strike.
- 49:50Boy, I know there are a lot of disappointed people here today who didn't,
- 49:53or haven't as yet gotten into the ballpark and are close enough to get here.
- 49:58Very good friend of ours, longtime friend, Vic Hyden.
- 50:02He's two young boys all the way from Nevada this morning.
- 50:08And the people that have their tickets aren't here yet.
- 50:11Here's a pitch fouled off down the left field line.
- 50:15And they've been waiting out here at this ballpark since about 10, 1030 this morning.
- 50:23Couldn't get into the ballgame after driving all the way from Reno.
- 50:31One and two to count.
- 50:34Here's a pitch, swing and a foul down.
- 50:47Scores all tied up two and two.
- 50:51the A's have been in a little bit of a rut as far as run scoring.
- 50:54We've scored four runs the last three games.
- 50:56the opposition has scored one run, two runs and two runs.
- 50:59So four has been enough to win in three straight games.
- 51:03Here's a pitch, high fly ball, foul ground, off third,
- 51:07Bando chasing it near the stand, hanging there, Sal, he's got it.
- 51:15the nine is retired here in the fourth inning. Two runs for the Tigers, two hits, they didn't leave anybody on.
- 51:21And the score in the middle of the fourth is two and two.
- 51:24Late news from KNBR. Robert Finch says his health played no part in the decision to remove him as health and welfare secretary.
- 51:32Finch will become a special advisor to the president.
- 51:35Finch reportedly made the move reluctantly.
- 51:37He'll be replaced at HEW by elegant Richardson, an undersecretary of state noted for his administrative ability.
- 51:44Senate Democratic leader Mike Mansfield is again called for short-term wage and price controls.
- 51:49Arson is considered a possible cause of this morning's fire that caused $400,000 damage to the Playboy Club in West Hollywood.
- 51:57A small army of lawmen arrested 34 Indians on trespass charges at a PG&E campground near Redding at dawn.
- 52:05Fresno County has started counting the ballots that were cast in Tuesday's election.
- 52:10It took four days to reprogram the computers.
- 52:13Another bomb was found under a police car in the Berkeley Police parking lot during the night.
- 52:18It failed to go off because of a defective fuse.
- 52:21And that's the latest from KNBR.
- 52:23Well, it looks like a porcupine farm around here right now.
- 52:30They just asked all the kids with bats to raise their bats in the air with their head, and it's quite a majestic sight to see here.
- 52:38They said wave them. They should have put wave gently.
- 52:41You know, it's always an amazing fact to me that two or three kids don't leave the ballpark on that day with skulls bashed in.
- 52:48And those foul balls come into the stands. It's bound to be a temptation to try to hit it back out.
- 52:53But don't ever do that.
- 52:56Here's Reggie Jackson. Our game is tied 2 and 2.
- 53:02Jackson, Bando, and Venter.
- 53:04Jackson is first time up, grounded a second base.
- 53:14Going against Joe Nicrow, a right-hander.
- 53:18Reggie sets it to play. Here's a pitch.
- 53:25Swing and a roller foul down the first base line.
- 53:28the A's are out of the threshold of really going big with winning. They won four games in a row over Chicago in that series up there, May 22nd through 24th.
- 53:39They lost one, won two out of three to California, came home, lost two out of three to Cleveland, but beat Baltimore two out of three, and we've now won three in a row again.
- 53:48If we could get this guy going, this club could move right on up.
- 53:53We've knocked a game and a half off the twins' lead in the last week. Here's a pitch.
- 53:59A little high with a fastball, one ball and one strike.
- 54:08the A's appear to be about ready to put everything together.
- 54:12Here's a 1-1 pitch.
- 54:14A drive to the left field is going to be extra-basis. Up against the fence on one hop, Horton feels the ball. Jackson goes flying in the second with a double.
- 54:32Well, that's half a home run.
- 54:37A line drive that carried to the left field fence on one hop. It taps off that wooden wall so hard that Horton feels it on the fly.
- 54:45Now here's Sal Bando in a tied-up game. Let's see if fouls try to go to the right side.
- 54:53Bando has 34 runs batted in.
- 54:57Nobody out.
- 54:58Micro, the pitcher, moves to the front of the rubber now, plants that right foot on it.
- 55:08Now here's a pitch.
- 55:10Bando fouls it off to the right side, back in the crowd.
- 55:15Hey, great catch by somebody right in the crowd out there.
- 55:25One strike count on Sal Bando.
- 55:29Sal's got 10 home runs. He's hit two off in the last three days.
- 55:35Right now he's settled for a single or even a ground ball to the right side just to move Jackson over to scoring position at third where he can score on a fly ball or a ground out.
- 55:47Micro finally trying to work him inside.
- 55:50Here's a pitch.
- 55:51Curve ball hit right back to the mound. Jackson's going to hold it second. Bando is out at first base. Sal's trying to give himself up to hit that ball to the right side.
- 55:59Missed doing it because he hit it to the mound on one hop.
- 56:03So Jackson wisely held on at second and that takes a pretty good reflexes to do that.
- 56:08Because your normal reaction when a ball is hit is to break towards the next bag.
- 56:14Now here's Don Mentor and they're having a conference about him on the mound.
- 56:23Mentor's been hitting the ball sharply and he's been making his hits pay off. He's hit safely in the last four games.
- 56:29Last night he had one hit and knocked in a run.
- 56:35He's scored one of the A's runs today.
- 56:39One out, tie game. Base hit away from taking the lead.
- 56:43Mentor talks the bat over his left shoulder.
- 56:47Here's a pitch. Curve ball popped up behind the plate. It's going to be out of play though.
- 56:52Oh Don loves that high slow breaking pitch and he really had a cut at it.
- 56:59He's hit 12 home runs. the last one he hit was on May 30th against Cleveland here at the Coliseum. the first game of the homestand.
- 57:07Bobby Hoffman calls Reggie Jackson down for a little conference.
- 57:11Gutierrez has been sneaking back in behind Reggie. Last night we got Monday picked off at second base.
- 57:18That's probably a precautionary type conference.
- 57:25Crowd chanting gold.
- 57:28Jackson is ready to go.
- 57:32Here's a pitch to Mentor. Here's a hot shot to the first baseman.
- 57:35Jackson holds at second base as Cash steps in the bag at first.
- 57:43Reggie didn't even gamble on that one. He hit deep to the right side of the infield.
- 57:52So now there are two down. the runner at second. Here's Frank Fernandez.
- 58:02That's the ball we would have wanted out of Mentor if Bandos would have gone out to the right side of the infield and moved Jackson over.
- 58:09It's all it would have taken to score but Sal's ball went right straight to the mound.
- 58:14Here's Frank Fernandez. He talked the roller down the third baseline his first time up and got on on a throwing error.
- 58:21the pitch to him. Slider hits the outside corner and calls strike.
- 58:31Reggie Jackson at second carrying the go ahead run.
- 58:38He's had only two hits off Necro.
- 58:43Reggie takes a wide early down off second base. Now Necro doesn't like it. Steps off the rubber to drive him back in.
- 58:52With two down the infielders won't be quite as close to Jackson at second. He can get a little bigger lead.
- 59:00Now the pitch. There's a high fly ball in the right center field. Hit deep. That ball is carrying well but Kline will catch it short of the warning track.
- 59:08And the A's lose a great chance to score here in the fourth inning.
- 59:13One hit. One man left on. the score after four is Tigers two and the A's two.
- 59:19A card that's squeaking, knocking or backfiring is following your attention to something. It's telling you it needs service.
- 59:26But sometimes cars keep secrets and they don't alert you as to what's going wrong.
- 59:31That's why regular checkups are so important for any automobile. And why when it's time for a checkup so many people take their car to a Richfield station.
- 59:40You see your Richfield dealer is really prepared to give your car the extra service it deserves.
- 59:46In the first place he's experienced and he's trained. Beyond the experience of a training there's something else.
- 59:54There's the Richfield service guy. the informative manual that tells him all he needs to know about your automobile.
- 1:00:01Any car may have problems that aren't easy to spot such as frayed wires, rusted counter bins and tiny oil leaks which never make a lot of noise.
- 1:00:11And that's why it's nice to know that when it comes to service in your car Richfield doesn't play things just by ear. They know what they're doing.
- 1:00:21Let's check up on some other baseball today. Milwaukee beat Baltimore 6 to 4.
- 1:00:26Brab Bender the winner his second win of the year. Palmer the loser 7 and 3. 12,076 saw that game in Milwaukee.
- 1:00:33Milwaukee Brewers 6 and the Baltimore Orioles 4.
- 1:00:40the Giants beat the Cubs today 5 to 3 for Gaylord Perry's eighth victory of the year. Bill Hans lost his fourth.
- 1:00:4734,465 saw that one. Here's a pitch to Bill Freehand and it's in there for a call strike.
- 1:00:56Freehand had a flat ball in the center field his first time up. It was caught.
- 1:01:02the Yankees beat the White Sox 3 to 1. Cumberland the winner over Holland.
- 1:01:07Pitch is outside for a ball. At New York 22,424 today.
- 1:01:13Well whereas last night we had one of the smallest crowds in baseball today I bet we have one of the biggest.
- 1:01:24One ball one strike Chuck Dobson winding the pitch. Little high ball two.
- 1:01:38Well if you saw all these bats up today you'd make a lot of toothpicks.
- 1:01:4324,000 or so of them were given away and thousands more coupons. Here's a pitch. Curve is high ball three. That one was close.
- 1:01:52Dobson turned his back on a catcher who worked on the mound a little bit. I think he thought that one was in there.
- 1:02:00Three balls one strike on Bill Freehand. Big Tiger catcher.
- 1:02:09Pitch to him is lined deep in the left center field. It's carrying way back. He's going out of here a home run.
- 1:02:18He had to come in with a three ball one strike count. And Freehand hit it out of here.
- 1:02:27Dobson is furious. On fire throwing the ball. He didn't even catch it. He let it just fall right on his feet.
- 1:02:34Let's pause here for station identification. This is the Oakland A's baseball network.
- 1:02:39This is KNBR in San Francisco.
- 1:02:54That's the second home run of the game for the Tigers. They lead three to two. Here's Maddox and the pitch is high for a ball.
- 1:03:03Al Downing starts to work in the A's bullpen. That is the ninth home run of the year for Bill Freehand.
- 1:03:11Pitch right in there calls strike. Freehand leads the Tigers in home runs this year.
- 1:03:21His average is low, 229.
- 1:03:29Now Dobson's wide. Here's the one one pitch to Maddox. He tried to bun it. It was a tough one to bun.
- 1:03:34It was over his head. Or not over his head maybe, but certainly over the strike zone.
- 1:03:39Fernandez had to stand up to catch the ball. That's how high it was. And that's a pretty tough one to bun.
- 1:03:49One ball and two strikes. the pitch curve high, two and two.
- 1:04:06Dobson comes to the plate again. Swing and a miss. Strike three for a breaking ball.
- 1:04:11Maddox is out. It's the second strike out for Chuck in the game. And here's the pitcher Joe Necrow.
- 1:04:20They say that Necrow, whose brother is a great knuckleball pitcher, throws it just once in a while.
- 1:04:25He throws it quite a bit on the sideline. And in warming up prior to the game, they say he'll throw it once in a while.
- 1:04:32But he doesn't throw it much in a game.
- 1:04:36He's working on it for when he can no longer throw quite as hard.
- 1:04:43Here's the pitch. the curve is outside.
- 1:04:55We have one out in the fifth. It's three to two. Tigers leading.
- 1:05:02That ball is low. Two and oh now.
- 1:05:11Well, we've had some great crowds here on our promotion days. Cap day. We had so many people we ran out of caps.
- 1:05:18So many people today that ran out of bats.
- 1:05:21Cold strike gets right in there two and one.
- 1:05:27Some of the other days, a few people were running out of money.
- 1:05:35Two and one on Necrow. Oh, beautiful curve. He's putting the bucket at that time. Necrow couldn't have reached it with a long pole.
- 1:05:43Strike. It's called two and two.
- 1:05:55Here's the next pitch. Swing the foul down.
- 1:06:07It's a cool day, but beautifully sunny.
- 1:06:12Refreshing compared to that heat we've been having. Here's a pitch outside ball three.
- 1:06:23Be another sunshiny afternoon game tomorrow.
- 1:06:27Starting at 130 and catfish hunter, our top winner, will go against Mickey Lolic.
- 1:06:34Dobson needs a strike here at three and two to the pitcher.
- 1:06:37There's a line drive deep in the left field. That lose going back and he is in front of the fence about five feet to grab it.
- 1:06:45Hey, Necrow gave that one a pretty good charge.
- 1:06:50Dobson getting hurt a little on those pitches where he's having to come in.
- 1:06:55Though it was the first pitch that cashed it out of here for a two run homer that tied the game.
- 1:07:03Here's Dick McCallum.
- 1:07:10Pitch is low, ball one.
- 1:07:13It can really hurt you when you've got a leadoff guy on in the middle of batting orders.
- 1:07:17It's a fifth and sixth men coming up and it's a leadoff double as the A's had with Jackson last inning and can't move him past second.
- 1:07:26There's a high fly ball out behind second base.
- 1:07:29Campy's going back. Monday coming in, Campy takes his cap off and finds the ball and makes the catch.
- 1:07:40Maybe the bill of his cap was getting in the way or it shades most people.
- 1:07:45He made the grab and that retires the side.
- 1:07:48We're at the halfway point of the game and here's the score.
- 1:07:50the Detroit Tigers three and the Oakland A's two.
- 1:07:54Hey girls, we've got a little suggestion for you.
- 1:07:57the best way to make your man shape up.
- 1:07:59Give him Mr. Levi's stay press slack and there's never been a better time.
- 1:08:05Father's Day, you know, is June 21st.
- 1:08:07So shape up dad with a pair or two of Mr. Levi's.
- 1:08:10It's the way to get dad really with it.
- 1:08:13And Mr. Levi's is a gift he really wants.
- 1:08:15Darn right, Monty. Mr. Levi's are fuller cut for super comfort and stay press means you never have to iron them.
- 1:08:22Nobody but Levi's makes stay press slacks.
- 1:08:25They stay neat and fresh all day, whatever the action.
- 1:08:28And girls, what a selection.
- 1:08:30Great fabrics, patterns and colors.
- 1:08:33Traditional belt loop or continental waistband styling.
- 1:08:37Mr. Levi's will put dad right in front of the fashion parade.
- 1:08:40In the most comfortable slacks he's ever worn.
- 1:08:43So look for the dad's day tag on Mr. Levi's stay press slacks at your favorite men's store.
- 1:08:55Joe Nicrow will pitch to Rick Monday.
- 1:08:58Dick Green and Chuck Dobson in the fifth inning.
- 1:09:01It's three to two.
- 1:09:02the A's have been having to come from behind to win games lately.
- 1:09:05And here we are again.
- 1:09:07We are in the unfamiliar spot of leading two to nothing.
- 1:09:10When Norm Cash followed an Al Keeline single with a home run over the right center field wall to tie it.
- 1:09:16And then Bill Frehan rocketed one out of here over the left field wall.
- 1:09:21We got the fireworks guy all poised out behind the center field gate.
- 1:09:26And hope we can see some fireworks which are set off when an A's player hits a home run.
- 1:09:38Okay, it's Rick Monday up there.
- 1:09:41Rick got a base hit and knocked in a run for the A's in the second inning.
- 1:09:49Rick's hit in five games in a row on his latest streak.
- 1:09:53Batting 287, he's hung right in there from 275 to as high as 400 for a long time.
- 1:10:02If any peanut man's listening with a transistor radio,
- 1:10:04how Ashby's having a fit up here for peanuts.
- 1:10:10Here's a pitch to Monday.
- 1:10:12Swing and a miss on a slow curve, strike one.
- 1:10:16Ashby's a good bet to buy two or three packs.
- 1:10:19He and that cameraman go through them pretty fast.
- 1:10:26Oh, what a buzzing crowd.
- 1:10:31One strike count on Rick Monday standing off to the side.
- 1:10:35Boy, he made a catch here last night.
- 1:10:36I'd like for 150,000 people to have seen.
- 1:10:40A pitch outside, it's a ball one and one.
- 1:10:54Here's the next pitch.
- 1:10:56Curve, strike, dropped it right in there.
- 1:11:02the run that Rick knocked in was the first RBI he had had since May 20th.
- 1:11:07It's been three weeks since he's not going to run, though he had had a lot of base hits.
- 1:11:11There just hadn't been anybody on front of him when he hit.
- 1:11:15Here's a pitch.
- 1:11:17Ah, that Negro can throw pretty hard.
- 1:11:29Count it to two, the pitch.
- 1:11:31Low, it's ball three.
- 1:11:34Rick's got a pretty good eye at the plate.
- 1:11:36He's struck out 50 times.
- 1:11:38That's the only thing that's out of ratio in his statistics column.
- 1:11:51Tigers have really put this Negro to work.
- 1:11:53This is the 13th game he's started.
- 1:11:56Here's a 3-2 pitch, bowled away by Rick.
- 1:12:01He's all the way to the third deck.
- 1:12:06See, lots of evidence here today of people who were here on cap day
- 1:12:09because there are thousands and thousands of Kelly Green caps down in the crowd.
- 1:12:24Count is full.
- 1:12:30Negro ready to work and here it comes.
- 1:12:33Walk team, and there's the start for the A's.
- 1:12:36Got the tie runner on, we can get him around with the bottom thirds of batting order.
- 1:12:39Here is Dick Green.
- 1:12:45Boy Green, he got back in the lineup last night for the first time in a while,
- 1:12:48and believe me, he had some tough plays at second base on double plays.
- 1:12:54He got hung up down there twice, once when Mando couldn't get the ball out of his glove,
- 1:12:58and he had to wait, and the other time when Latchman couldn't get it out of his glove,
- 1:13:01and he had to wait, and he got clobbered both times.
- 1:13:07Green is batting 193.
- 1:13:12Mundy leading away at first base.
- 1:13:14Necron's a stretch.
- 1:13:163-2, Tigers lead. Mundy's going.
- 1:13:18Green bows it back.
- 1:13:19Look out here, you may get it.
- 1:13:20Oh, just off the booth to our left.
- 1:13:24We need a longer net, I've been saying that all year.
- 1:13:30That one came in the booth just off to our left.
- 1:13:41One strike count on Dick Green.
- 1:13:48Mundy was running on that last pitch.
- 1:13:52He draws a throw.
- 1:13:54Hey, Ashby, somebody just threw a peanut in our booth out of the upper deck to help you out there.
- 1:13:59I'm hungry, I'm going to eat it.
- 1:14:01It never got to Ashby.
- 1:14:04I threw it to the shortstop, Kerry, and he gobbled it up.
- 1:14:10One strike count on Green.
- 1:14:14Necron holding a long time to pitch.
- 1:14:16Greeny bows it back upstairs.
- 1:14:21No balls, two strikes.
- 1:14:29Testing the advertising power of our network today.
- 1:14:32Advertised for a peanut salesman for Ashby.
- 1:14:38We'd better get one pretty soon.
- 1:14:42There came another one.
- 1:14:45Here's the 0-2 pitch to Green now.
- 1:14:48Nope, they're going to throw the first.
- 1:14:58Nate goes out ahead of Greeny.
- 1:15:01Here's the pitch.
- 1:15:03Inside, ball one.
- 1:15:06Green has three home runs.
- 1:15:07He knocked in nine runs.
- 1:15:15He never really got going this year in the average department, though he had base hits in his first six games he played.
- 1:15:24One ball, two strikes.
- 1:15:26Monday's got a big lead at first.
- 1:15:28Draws a throw and goes back in on his stomach.
- 1:15:33Up there there is John Red Flaherty.
- 1:15:36They don't call him Red because of his hair.
- 1:15:38It's silver gray.
- 1:15:40Another throw.
- 1:15:41Monday has to hit the dirt again.
- 1:15:43He's widened that lead out quite a bit and Necro doesn't like the looks of it.
- 1:15:46He's keeping Monday a little closer.
- 1:15:51He's going to need to run the tie.
- 1:15:52We've got that man on now.
- 1:15:54Greeny could get an extra base hit.
- 1:15:55Monday, as fast as he is, could probably score.
- 1:15:59Another throw and Rick almost stumbled getting back to first that time.
- 1:16:04He asked for time.
- 1:16:05He's going to have to get a little dirt off of him.
- 1:16:08Got in his eyes as he dived back in.
- 1:16:10Rick slipped a little bit as he hit the dirt that time.
- 1:16:14He had to crawl the last fifth.
- 1:16:16Monday, what would you call that bridle white now?
- 1:16:22That's beautiful on the A's we're wearing today.
- 1:16:23Wedding gown white.
- 1:16:24It's not exactly wedding gown white, is it?
- 1:16:26It looks like thick pin dirt.
- 1:16:30Necro throws again.
- 1:16:31It's just Crowhawk back on there this time.
- 1:16:42Looks like something happened to the wedding gown after Jilted Sooter got a sweeter suitor
- 1:16:46or got a hold of it or something.
- 1:16:47Another throw to first.
- 1:16:48They're afraid of Monday taking off.
- 1:16:53I don't know if they count the pitches on Necro, but if they count those throws to first,
- 1:16:57it adds a lot of pitches.
- 1:16:59Now the crowd's really chanting go.
- 1:17:01Another throw to first.
- 1:17:02the Tigers must think they have a sign.
- 1:17:16One ball, two strikes to count on Green.
- 1:17:18Nobody out.
- 1:17:22Necro holding a long time, throws to first again, and Monday hot dives back in again.
- 1:17:26Now Freehand is going out to talk to him.
- 1:17:29Rick really doesn't steal that many bases, but the A's did have a hit and run play on
- 1:17:37in one of the earlier counts on Green.
- 1:17:39In fact, Monday's stolen only five bases.
- 1:17:42He's been thrown out three times.
- 1:17:44But Necro doesn't want to give him any advantage over there.
- 1:17:48As a matter of fact, he's trying to take away one advantage you get by leading off.
- 1:17:52But he may be losing a little concentration on the batter.
- 1:17:57Now he's set.
- 1:17:59Here's the pitch.
- 1:18:00Here's a bouncing ball, a third.
- 1:18:02Fooded momentarily by the third baseman, but he gets it away in a second in time for the
- 1:18:06fourth there.
- 1:18:07No double play.
- 1:18:08Man excluded that ball in with the luck would have it.
- 1:18:11It came right up in his hands again.
- 1:18:14He was able to get Monday at second base.
- 1:18:17And the difference in Monday being able to start on a ball that Green hit and not being
- 1:18:22able to start is that they would not have gotten him at second base on that fumble ball
- 1:18:26if it had been started.
- 1:18:29Oh, that Maddox showed me some kind of hands in.
- 1:18:37He didn't feel it cleanly, but he got it enough that it bounced right up in front of him and
- 1:18:41he grabbed it with a bare right hand and fired a second for the fourth Green beating the
- 1:18:44throw to first.
- 1:18:45Now here is Chuck Thompson with one out.
- 1:18:47They'll be looking for the putt here.
- 1:18:49It's three to two Detroit leading.
- 1:18:57Here's the pitch.
- 1:18:58Thompson fronts it out towards the mound and it's a beauty.
- 1:19:00Only one play and that's the first.
- 1:19:02He throws to McCollum covering.
- 1:19:04Necro made the throw.
- 1:19:05Now Campy can get a base hit.
- 1:19:07the A's could tie it up here.
- 1:19:15Dick Green is at second carrying the tying run.
- 1:19:18the A's had Jackson at second with nobody out in the fourth inning and didn't get him
- 1:19:23moved.
- 1:19:26Campanaro's throw for two today lined out in the right center field in the first inning
- 1:19:30and pops the center field at the next time up.
- 1:19:37Campy has knocked in 12 runs this year.
- 1:19:40He's hit four home runs.
- 1:19:47Choking way up on the bat handle.
- 1:19:50Necro ready throws.
- 1:19:51Curve low.
- 1:19:52Ball one.
- 1:19:55Tigers ahead on two homers.
- 1:19:56One by Cash with a man on and the go ahead homer by Bill Freehand.
- 1:20:12Green comes away from second base.
- 1:20:13Here's the pitch.
- 1:20:14Campy swings and misses a curve.
- 1:20:16He was way out front on that breaking ball.
- 1:20:18One ball and one strike.
- 1:20:21the A's are seeing Necro for the very first time.
- 1:20:25But they are starting the third go around against him here today and that's usually
- 1:20:28enough to find out what a guy has.
- 1:20:32His ERA is not too impressive, 3.53, and his record is four wins, five losses starting
- 1:20:38today, but he's been very sharp here.
- 1:20:41A's have only two hits.
- 1:20:44Here's the pitch.
- 1:20:46Strike gets right in there at one and two now.
- 1:20:57Two down and a man on.
- 1:20:59We're in the last half of the fifth inning of Jam-Pack Stadium.
- 1:21:02Coliseum and Oakland, the home of the swinging A's and the Raiders.
- 1:21:08One-two pitch.
- 1:21:10Curve swung on and missed.
- 1:21:12Strike three.
- 1:21:13Campy chased a bad pitch that time.
- 1:21:15Well, Necro survives another man in scoring position, getting his first strike out of
- 1:21:20the ballgame.
- 1:21:21After five innings, it's the Tigers three and the A's two.
- 1:21:33This is NBC News, San Francisco.
- 1:21:36Ray James, NBC News, Chicago.
- 1:21:38Despite an overnight curfew, about 2,000 University of Illinois students gathered.
- 1:21:43the stadium was towered, NBC News, Washington.
- 1:21:46A nationwide railroad strike would have an immediate impact on the nation's economy and
- 1:21:50affect transportation for one...
- 1:21:52San Lager, NBC News, Saigon.
- 1:21:55A good deal of enemy activity now centers around the Southern Mountains region of the
- 1:21:59Mekong Delta.
- 1:22:00Ray Cullen, NBC News, Sacramento.
- 1:22:03Governor Reagan today renewed criticism of leaders of last week's disturbances in Santa
- 1:22:07Barbara.
- 1:22:08Angus Crowley, NBC News, Costco.
- 1:22:12Gutierrez, the shortstop for the Tigers, will lead off.
- 1:22:15Then K-Line and Cash against Chuck Dobson.
- 1:22:18There's a sign up on the scoreboard that certainly is off note.
- 1:22:22It's helmet day here.
- 1:22:24Saturday, June 20th.
- 1:22:26A's helmet.
- 1:22:31That's a replica of the ones that the A's wear at bat.
- 1:22:35They're giving away to everybody 14 and under two weeks from today.
- 1:22:39Time to start getting tickets in advance for that now.
- 1:22:42Here's the first pitch to Gutierrez at foul back, strike one.
- 1:22:46Also have a t-shirt day coming up and everybody 16 and under will get t-shirts on that day.
- 1:22:59Cesar Gutierrez.
- 1:23:04the pitch time.
- 1:23:06Foul off.
- 1:23:08He has one of those big power type stances where he really never looks ready.
- 1:23:13Got that bat almost out in front of him and as the pitcher swings into his windup, he draws it back.
- 1:23:24Two strikes to count on Gutierrez to lead it off here in the sixth.
- 1:23:40Now Dobson's pitch.
- 1:23:41Sidearm curve ball and he went down swinging.
- 1:23:44Oh, that was a bad pitch with a great man with two strikes on ya.
- 1:23:48Dobson went sidearm for the first time today.
- 1:23:51That's a pitcher's pitch and Gutierrez had to chase it because he was in a hole.
- 1:23:58Dobson's third strike out.
- 1:23:59He hasn't walked anybody.
- 1:24:00Necron's walked only one.
- 1:24:03Here's Al Kailin.
- 1:24:06Al got a base hit to start the Tigers in the fourth.
- 1:24:09Pitch time.
- 1:24:11Strike on the outside corner.
- 1:24:13Al went right to right field with a pitch that was thrown to him.
- 1:24:19He was on when Cash belted one out of here.
- 1:24:24One strike pitch.
- 1:24:25Fastball fouled off and that Kailin doesn't get cheated on many swings.
- 1:24:28He had all of it right then.
- 1:24:39And I think if you come to the ball game tomorrow, you look for the two hustlingest guys on the field.
- 1:24:45You'll see two guys who are in their 30s.
- 1:24:47Now, Lou and Kailin.
- 1:24:49Sidearm curve from Dobson was over the plate, apparently a little high.
- 1:24:58the real stars of the game play every play of every game as hard as they can.
- 1:25:03Here's the pitch.
- 1:25:05It's high, ball two.
- 1:25:07Two balls and two strikes.
- 1:25:11Hernandez must have thought that was a called third strike.
- 1:25:15They popped out of his bed and he hustled to pick it up.
- 1:25:18He was going to tag Kailin.
- 1:25:24Two balls, two strikes.
- 1:25:31the bench swing and a miss.
- 1:25:33Strike three.
- 1:25:34Dobson gave Kailin a great big leg kick and motion and pulled the string on him.
- 1:25:40No check is struck out the first two men and the second here is Norm Cash, his longtime nemesis.
- 1:25:52He's got a short swing for a home run swinger, but it's got a lot of power in it.
- 1:26:01Big time fastball, swing and a miss.
- 1:26:03Strike one.
- 1:26:08Playing in Tiger Stadium, the left-handed hitter's delight.
- 1:26:12Cash has hit a lot of them there.
- 1:26:20One strike count on him.
- 1:26:21Here's the pitch.
- 1:26:23Swinging strike two.
- 1:26:24Dobson is throwing some smoke up there right now.
- 1:26:30That's rare backhand right on down by the river with those first two.
- 1:26:35It's three to two Tigers lead and the next inning we'll have Lou Jackson and Vando.
- 1:26:43the pitch.
- 1:26:44Smoke team again.
- 1:26:45Swinging strike three.
- 1:26:48Dobson got mad and just fired three in a row right by Norm Cash.
- 1:26:52So he struck out the side here in the sixth inning.
- 1:26:55And in the middle of the sixth the score is the Detroit Tigers three and the Oakland A's two.
- 1:27:02the Arctic tundra, 12 inches of vegetation covering frozen ground a thousand feet deep.
- 1:27:07One Atlantic rich field company discovered oil on Alaska's north slope, the place we call the Arco Circle.
- 1:27:13We found out if you disturb the tundra you cause erosion.
- 1:27:16A tire track can cause a 50-foot gorge.
- 1:27:19We stopped driving our trucks across it and started experiments with 13 different kinds of grass seeds so that if erosion occurs we'd be ready.
- 1:27:27the seeding has to be done by hand.
- 1:27:29the fertilizing has to be done by helicopters.
- 1:27:31And the grasses will have to be incredibly hardy to make it.
- 1:27:34But if they do, there will be a way to protect the delicate tundra forever.
- 1:27:38At Atlantic Rich Field Company, we're doing this because we believe drilling for oil and conservation go together.
- 1:27:45We went all the way to Alaska to drill for oil so we can provide your local rich field dealer with the finest Arco petroleum products for your car.
- 1:27:53Well, we're ready to go into the top half of the sixth inning and before the A's get some runs to take the lead here in this inning, let's pause for station identification.
- 1:28:08This is the Oakland A's baseball network.
- 1:28:10This is KNBR in San Francisco.
- 1:28:13It's Philippe Allou to lead it off for the A's.
- 1:28:27Philippe A hitting.338 when the game started today. He's dropped only three points and two at bats.
- 1:28:33He popped to the catcher and flied to left field.
- 1:28:38He'll be followed by Jackson and Bando.
- 1:28:44Lucky inning last night, Monty. Let's see what lightning will strike again.
- 1:28:49Got to do it.
- 1:28:50A little short trip around the chair to change things around again today.
- 1:28:54All right, Necro nods approval of the first sign. Here's a pitch.
- 1:28:59Slider, ooh, he threw that ball. Good strike call.
- 1:29:03Quick breaking slider to the outside part of the plate.
- 1:29:09He seemingly has had a good one today.
- 1:29:12the bench. Line drive, right center field. K-line is going to be there. He's got it one down.
- 1:29:18Allou right now is 0-4-10.
- 1:29:26Look at Sloppy's been in this year. Here's Reggie Jackson.
- 1:29:33Reggie got a double into the corner and left field his last time up.
- 1:29:37Move his average to 199.
- 1:29:40Certainly Joe Rudy has been playing left field and doing a good job of it.
- 1:29:43He's in the military reserve duty this weekend. He and Dave Duck and the A's have young catcher Gene Tennant up here.
- 1:29:51Here's a pitch to Jackson.
- 1:29:53A little high of all one. Boy, nothing would set this crowd on fire like a tater by Jackson.
- 1:29:59And out in Reggie's regiment.
- 1:30:03They're waiting for it.
- 1:30:05One ball, no strikes. It's a pitch.
- 1:30:08Swing and a miss. He tried to go, I believe, to the opposite field again. He swung a little late, if not, on a breaking ball to the outside part of the plate.
- 1:30:18Jackson has eight home runs and 18 runs batted in.
- 1:30:23You know, Bill Frehan leads the Tigers with eight home runs.
- 1:30:28Here's a 1-1 pitch. There's a foul ball out of play. It's headed for the upper deck.
- 1:30:35Landed a little short of the upper deck. Way foul down the right field line.
- 1:30:40So, Negros ahead of Jackson at one ball, two strikes.
- 1:30:51Negros turns around and sees a glance at the scoreboard, which shows a ball, two strikes, and the Tigers leading 3-2.
- 1:30:57Here's a pitch. Jackson fouls it off the other way this time.
- 1:31:05So, he's hit it one to his relatives in right field and one in left.
- 1:31:14Now, one for the cousins in right center.
- 1:31:18One and two counts.
- 1:31:23Here's the pitch.
- 1:31:26High. Negros threw a fastball.
- 1:31:35Pando kneeling on deck. Jackson at the plate.
- 1:31:41So, he's hit it one to his relatives in right field and one in left.
- 1:31:50Now, one for the cousins in right center.
- 1:31:54One and two counts.
- 1:31:59Here's the pitch. High. Negros threw a fastball.
- 1:32:08Counts two balls, two strikes. Pando kneeling on deck. Jackson at the plate.
- 1:32:17Negros' pitch. Slow curve. He struck him out swinging.
- 1:32:21Throw a good, slow curveball that time to Jackson, and he went out of there.
- 1:32:25So, there are two down. That's only the second strike out of the game for Negros, and here's Pando.
- 1:32:30Boy, I had a feeling about Reggie right there. I could just see him hit that ball out of here.
- 1:32:39For those of you who follow horse racing, high echelon has just won the Belmont State.
- 1:32:47Here's Sal Pando.
- 1:32:51the pitch. Outside. Negros has stopped the A's on two hits so far.
- 1:33:03We've been having about one good inning a game. Here's a pitch. Outside.
- 1:33:08Last night, it was a four-run, sixth inning.
- 1:33:15Thompson is pitching well today.
- 1:33:20A couple more.
- 1:33:23Here's a two-hole pitch. Pando pops his foul out of play. Had a good cut at that pitch.
- 1:33:34Two and one.
- 1:33:37If Sal could get on, Don Metcher will be next.
- 1:33:49Now the pitch.
- 1:33:52Little high ball. Three and three and one on Pando.
- 1:33:56That was the count on Freehand when Freehand hit his home run out of here.
- 1:34:06There's a line in the right center field. A base hit.
- 1:34:11Now Kaleid over to his right to pick it up. Pando's going to try for two. Kaleid's got a good arm, but he throws it off line. It's a double for Pando.
- 1:34:27Now Pando. Ripped a three-one pitch out of the right center field for a double.
- 1:34:32Now here's Don Metcher with first base open and Frank Fernandez coming up next.
- 1:34:38See what kind of good pitches he'll get Metcher here if he can.
- 1:34:46There are two down.
- 1:34:49Runner at second, and this is the third time we've had that tying run at second base.
- 1:34:55And couldn't get him in.
- 1:34:59This time, maybe Metcher can do it.
- 1:35:07Necro backs off the river for a moment.
- 1:35:13North Cache has been over the mound to say something to Necro and pointed to the on-deck area where Fernandez is.
- 1:35:22Here's a pitch.
- 1:35:25He tried to hold up on his swing, but he couldn't. It was high and inside. It goes for strike one.
- 1:35:30Tiger Dugout trying to get Gutierrez to shortstop to move over behind second.
- 1:35:38Metcher got his hit last night right up the middle and knocked in a run.
- 1:35:42Necro got a big strike right then.
- 1:35:45He got down to go for a pitch he now didn't want to go for.
- 1:35:51Here's a pitch. Cardball hits foul past first base.
- 1:35:55So Necro is out ahead of Metcher. He's not wasting anything on him.
- 1:35:59He's going to try to get him.
- 1:36:04Fernandez got home run fire. They don't want to put that lead run on base.
- 1:36:14Tigers three, the A's two, last of the six.
- 1:36:20Mando is at second, a hit away from tying the game.
- 1:36:24No two counts. the pitch wasted outside, ball one.
- 1:36:46One ball, two strikes on Metcher.
- 1:36:50Necro ready. the pitch, high two and two.
- 1:36:55Don is at half of his 12 home runs here at the Coliseum.
- 1:37:09Now the big lieutenant hitting first baseman stands in with a count of two balls, two strikes.
- 1:37:13Necro is really working on him now after getting those two quick strikes.
- 1:37:19Mando off second base. Gutierrez playing right behind him.
- 1:37:23Here's a pitch. Cardball right in the right field, hanging there.
- 1:37:26It's a foul ball by about 12 inches.
- 1:37:33Oh, Metcher got his pitch in, a slow curve ball, and he loves it.
- 1:37:38He was just a little bit anxious and he pulled it down the line in right field.
- 1:37:42It fell foul by about 12 inches it looked like.
- 1:37:47That ball was well out over first base at one time, but it had that hook spin on it and just kept hooking and landed foul.
- 1:37:57So the count hangs on at two and two.
- 1:38:05Mando back to second. I don't think Don's going to see that pitch again.
- 1:38:14Freehand calls the sign now.
- 1:38:19Necro gets set.
- 1:38:21the pitch, fastball popped up on the infield.
- 1:38:26Norm Cash is calling for it, makes the catch and fouls around.
- 1:38:30And the A's lose another chance with a runner in second base.
- 1:38:34No fixed innings have come and gone. It's still Detroit 3 and Oakland 2.
- 1:38:40We're still in it. For the last three ought to be something. Here's Harry.
- 1:38:44And the pitch stops to stay close.
- 1:38:47So hold the tribe because you have the feeling somewhere along the line the A's will get to Joe Necro.
- 1:38:54Willie Horton leading it off.
- 1:38:57He struck out and flied out.
- 1:39:00Chuck Johnson struck out three in a row and a sixth.
- 1:39:05Here's the pitch. Horton swings high pop fly on the infield. Mando.
- 1:39:10Waiting for it in fair territory, makes the catch.
- 1:39:13Horton on the first pitch. Popped to Mando.
- 1:39:16Here's Jim Nothra.
- 1:39:19Good one, town hitter. He's had one out of three.
- 1:39:23Make that one out of two today.
- 1:39:25Nothing out of four last night.
- 1:39:28On the top of the 7, 3 to 2 in favor of Detroit.
- 1:39:34the biggest crowd since the first America League game ever played here today.
- 1:39:39Here's the pitch curve into the dirt.
- 1:39:42One ball, no strikes. Looking ahead to the bottom of the 7.
- 1:39:46Fernandez, Monday and Green.
- 1:39:50the bullpen is alive down there.
- 1:39:55Diego Seguin and Paul Lindblad.
- 1:39:57One ball, no strikes. the pitch a little low.
- 1:40:01Ball two.
- 1:40:03One away in the top of the 7.
- 1:40:09Two home runs of the counter for the three runs.
- 1:40:12the Detroiters score. Here's the pitch.
- 1:40:15Mike over the outside corner, today.
- 1:40:18Two balls and a strike.
- 1:40:20Jim Nothra who's hit seven homers.
- 1:40:23Batting 284.
- 1:40:25Left hand batter swings that bat around.
- 1:40:28Dobson fifth.
- 1:40:30Swung late and fouled out of play.
- 1:40:32Not even set up with two balls, two strikes.
- 1:40:35Nothra a tall, rangy left hand hitter.
- 1:40:42Tuck Dobson gets sent.
- 1:40:47Notham's run with the Tigers now. This is seventh year.
- 1:40:52Two balls, two strikes.
- 1:40:54Now the pitch by Dobson. Here it is.
- 1:40:57He had a cut and he fouled it back.
- 1:41:00the count stays even up.
- 1:41:02Two balls, two strikes.
- 1:41:05Cash hit a two run homer in the fourth.
- 1:41:08Bill Frean hit a three one pitch for a home run in the fifth.
- 1:41:13the two runs the A's made were unearned in the second.
- 1:41:15So they're built for an attack against young Joe Necron.
- 1:41:20Two balls, two strikes.
- 1:41:23Now the pitch to the left hand hitter. Here it is.
- 1:41:26Line drive in the left center of base hit.
- 1:41:29Here's Nothra Brown for his base. He'll hold.
- 1:41:32Now Lew gets the ball back into the infield.
- 1:41:35Jim Nothra blind to single over Campanaris' head.
- 1:41:39Here's Bill Frean.
- 1:41:44the homer in the fifth gave the Tigers a present three to two lead.
- 1:41:53One out, one on.
- 1:42:00Out of signal given.
- 1:42:05Elliott Maddox will be next.
- 1:42:08the stretch the fifth.
- 1:42:10Curve ball, strike ball.
- 1:42:12He may have gotten away with a pitch that time.
- 1:42:16That was a high strike to the inside part of the plate.
- 1:42:20Frean took it. One strike, a no ball.
- 1:42:23One on, one out. Big right handed hitter waiting.
- 1:42:29Now Thompson gets up. Called for time.
- 1:42:35Frean in his ninth year with the Tigers.
- 1:42:40Big catcher stands six three, weighs 200.
- 1:42:43Throw to first the runner back.
- 1:42:46One on, one out. Lindblad and Segui are warm in the bullpen.
- 1:42:53Right handed batter digging in.
- 1:42:55the stretch.
- 1:42:57Here's the pitch. He swings it a bad ball and he misses.
- 1:43:01Two strikes and nothing.
- 1:43:04Frean chased the slider high and away.
- 1:43:08One on, one out.
- 1:43:10Ball game in the seventh.
- 1:43:14Three to two in favor of the Tigers.
- 1:43:17Well, it would be a shame to lose this one before such a tremendous crowd.
- 1:43:21Now the pitch. Sidearm curve outside.
- 1:43:24Two strikes and a ball.
- 1:43:26Frank Fernandez behind the plate.
- 1:43:28He'll be leading off the bottom of the seventh.
- 1:43:32Jim Northrup, the runner at first, one out.
- 1:43:35Thompson getting ready.
- 1:43:39Two strikes and a ball.
- 1:43:43the stretch.
- 1:43:45the pitch.
- 1:43:46Here it is. He struck him out.
- 1:43:50Frean.
- 1:43:53Had a very weak swing of that ball.
- 1:43:55Looks like he may have tried to stop it with the slider on the outside corner anyway.
- 1:44:01And that's two away. Here's Elliott Maddux.
- 1:44:04He's singled in the third. He struck out on the fifth.
- 1:44:09Marill Anthony, the plate umpire, picking up some loose papers.
- 1:44:13They haven't announced the crowd as yet.
- 1:44:16It'll be in excess of 45,000.
- 1:44:23Right hand hitter waiting.
- 1:44:26Now the stretch.
- 1:44:28Throw over to first.
- 1:44:31Here's the center back.
- 1:44:35Elliott Maddux singled and struck out.
- 1:44:38Right hand is out of the pitch.
- 1:44:40Ground ball hit the bandos.
- 1:44:41Well, nice stop. the play the second. He's out.
- 1:44:44Bandol made a fine play to his left.
- 1:44:48And through to Northrup.
- 1:44:50Through the green to force Northrup.
- 1:44:53And it's no runs. One hit, no errors. One left.
- 1:44:56We move down to the bottom of seventh. Everybody up on their feet with a scar.
- 1:45:02the Tigers three, the A's two.
- 1:45:07You know, some fashion experts predict American men will soon be carrying handbags instead of wallets.
- 1:45:13That sound absurd to you?
- 1:45:14But I don't forget these things don't happen overnight.
- 1:45:17They evolve over a period of time.
- 1:45:19And for quite some time now, wallets have been bulging, splitting, and growing to enormous size.
- 1:45:24You see, it's all those old fashioned bulky credit cards.
- 1:45:27the more you have to carry, the more your wallet suffers.
- 1:45:30And if the present trend continues, the wallet, as we know it, just won't survive the strain.
- 1:45:35That's why Atlantic Richfield considers its new Arco credit card a step in the right direction.
- 1:45:40You see, one credit card honored at over 24,000 service stations, hundreds of hotels and motels,
- 1:45:45and all Hertz offices from coast to coast is a sure bet to slim down a wallet, not make it lumpier.
- 1:45:52That means there'll be that many fewer cards you'll have to carry.
- 1:45:55So if you'd like to join in turning back the trend, why not stop in at a Richfield station
- 1:46:00and see about a new Arco credit card?
- 1:46:02Chances are it's more your bag.
- 1:46:06Well, some 45,000 people on our feet.
- 1:46:10See a big banner there, the Grey Avenue Athletic Club.
- 1:46:17You see a lot of A's caps, a lot of the green bats.
- 1:46:21A gala day at the Old Ball Bar.
- 1:46:24A crowd of in excess of 45,000.
- 1:46:28Brilliant sunshine, a tight ballgame.
- 1:46:32What more could you want on a Saturday afternoon?
- 1:46:37Here is Fernandez.
- 1:46:40He's nothing out of two.
- 1:46:42Right-handed batter, bottom of the seventh.
- 1:46:44It's late. We need some runs.
- 1:46:48Fernandez, Monday and green come up in this inning.
- 1:46:52And probably a pinch hit if anybody gets on.
- 1:46:55Ward-Domson.
- 1:46:59Joe Micros allowed only three hits.
- 1:47:03Single by Monday in the second.
- 1:47:08A double by Jackson in the fourth.
- 1:47:11And a double by Bando in the sixth.
- 1:47:13the first pitch swung on in this.
- 1:47:15One strike and no ball.
- 1:47:18Nobody on and nobody out.
- 1:47:20Bottom half of the seventh inning.
- 1:47:22Right-hand hitter waiting.
- 1:47:24Now the pitch.
- 1:47:26There's a high top foul.
- 1:47:29Everybody chasing it. Everybody chasing.
- 1:47:31Guperas is there.
- 1:47:32And Harry Maddux couldn't make the catch.
- 1:47:39No play. He had to run a long way into the eighth fullback.
- 1:47:43It looked like Guperas had the best angle on the ball,
- 1:47:46but Maddux would yell for it.
- 1:47:48And the ball went right through his arm.
- 1:47:52No! Fernandez is in the hole.
- 1:47:54Two strikes and nothing.
- 1:48:02the outfield shades him towards left field.
- 1:48:07the edge trailing by a run.
- 1:48:11the fifth ball game.
- 1:48:14Two strikes, no ball.
- 1:48:16the fifth.
- 1:48:17High-hand side.
- 1:48:20Fernandez hitting 271.
- 1:48:24Going into the game.
- 1:48:26Two strikes and the ball.
- 1:48:29Now ready for the pitch from Necrol.
- 1:48:32Stuck him out on a curve ball.
- 1:48:36Fernandez goes down swinging.
- 1:48:38Necrol is only fan three.
- 1:48:45And here's Rick Monday, single and one.
- 1:48:50the A's wasted their best chance on the fourth one.
- 1:48:53Reggie Jackson let off with a double to left.
- 1:48:58the band will bounce for the pitcher.
- 1:49:00Mincher grounded the catch.
- 1:49:02And Fernandez flat out to Kailah.
- 1:49:05One out, nobody on, bottom of the seventh.
- 1:49:09Grancona's going to bat for green next.
- 1:49:14Necrol's pitch.
- 1:49:16Like a good fastball.
- 1:49:18One strike, no ball.
- 1:49:21One out, nobody on.
- 1:49:23Sweetitude to Trite.
- 1:49:27Necrol's pitch.
- 1:49:29There's a high fly ball.
- 1:49:31Trite feeling he's out, Kailah waiting and he takes it.
- 1:49:36Monday flies to Kailah.
- 1:49:39Two up, two down.
- 1:49:41Doing not a thing with Necrol.
- 1:49:45He's only allowed three hits.
- 1:49:47Grancona's a pinch hitter.
- 1:49:49Hitting 250, he's had one homer six runs out of them.
- 1:49:55Chuck Dobson would be next.
- 1:49:57In the seventh inning, three to two Detroit.
- 1:50:06Left hand hitter.
- 1:50:09Grancona hit one homer this year as a pinch hitter.
- 1:50:13Out of pitch.
- 1:50:15Strike at the knees and good fastball.
- 1:50:19One strike, no ball.
- 1:50:21Two men away.
- 1:50:23Nobody on base.
- 1:50:25Ball game in the seventh.
- 1:50:27Good pitch.
- 1:50:29Outside.
- 1:50:31That evens it up for the ball and a strike.
- 1:50:35Grancona batting for green.
- 1:50:38Tony LaRusso will take over at second base in the eighth.
- 1:50:43One ball, one strike.
- 1:50:45the pitch on the way.
- 1:50:47Curve of beauty.
- 1:50:49Two strikes and a ball.
- 1:50:53Two strikes and a ball.
- 1:50:59Grancona left handed hitter.
- 1:51:02Two strikes and a ball.
- 1:51:04the pitch flings and he fouls it back.
- 1:51:07Get that one right off his handle.
- 1:51:09I've hurt his hand.
- 1:51:11Two strikes and a ball.
- 1:51:15Grancona waiting at the plate.
- 1:51:21Another in first baseman and outfielder.
- 1:51:25Two strikes and a ball.
- 1:51:27Now the pitch.
- 1:51:29Struck him out on a slow curve.
- 1:51:33Grancona caught out on strike.
- 1:51:35One, two, three, nothing across.
- 1:51:38At the end of seventh.
- 1:51:40Detroit three, the A's two.
- 1:51:44And leading it off there will be Joe Necrow who's pitched an excellent ball game so far.
- 1:51:49He's allowed only three hits.
- 1:51:51the two runs that were scored were unearned.
- 1:52:04Necrow, pretty good hitter for a pitcher.
- 1:52:10Dobson's delivery.
- 1:52:12Strike a good fast ball.
- 1:52:15One strike and a ball.
- 1:52:18Remember to stay with us for the postgame wrap-up.
- 1:52:23Which will feature an interview and all the other scores.
- 1:52:27Ah, the pitch to Necrow.
- 1:52:29Strike two a fast ball.
- 1:52:32Two strikes and nothing.
- 1:52:35Nobody on and nobody out.
- 1:52:38the A's welcome 150 fans from Sacramento.
- 1:52:43the Johnny McNamara A's fans club.
- 1:52:46Here's a curve ball swung on and missed.
- 1:52:50Necrow goes down swinging.
- 1:52:52That's seven strikeouts for Dobson.
- 1:52:55One out here is Dick McCollum.
- 1:52:59So the Johnny McNamara A's fans club from Sacramento, some 150 strong is here today.
- 1:53:07One out, nobody on, ball game of the A's.
- 1:53:10Three to two Detroit.
- 1:53:12the pitch to McCollum, a little wide.
- 1:53:16McCollum, nothing out of four last night, nothing out of three today.
- 1:53:23Chuck Dobson threw two home run balls and that's what hurt him.
- 1:53:27Here's a put swing and he missed.
- 1:53:30That seventh strikeout gives him his highest strikeout total of the year for any single game.
- 1:53:38Listen in left field.
- 1:53:50There's a wind up the pitch.
- 1:53:52Ground ball up the middle there is the base hit from McCollum.
- 1:53:56McCollum ripped the single up the middle.
- 1:53:59Dobson may have slowed that ball down with his bare hands.
- 1:54:05Here's Cesar Gutierrez, the shortstop.
- 1:54:09He's open three so far today.
- 1:54:13Al Kaleine would be next.
- 1:54:17Dobson getting ready.
- 1:54:23To have a chance to pull it out you've got to hold him.
- 1:54:27the A's with probably a pinch hitter for Dobson starting the bottom of the eighth.
- 1:54:32He's at the top of the batting order.
- 1:54:35Throw over the first to run her back.
- 1:54:38Gutierrez hitting 224.
- 1:54:42Right handed hitter used to be with the Giants.
- 1:54:45the stretch the pitch.

- 1:54:48There goes the runner swung on line drive.
- 1:54:49Center field base hit.
- 1:54:50the runner will race the third.
- 1:54:54So the hit and run was put on and executed perfectly.
- 1:54:59Now here's Kaleine up there.
- 1:55:05And it takes a great job of pitching out to get out of this game.
- 1:55:10Kaleine is one out of three.
- 1:55:14He struck out on the sixth.
- 1:55:20He hit into a double play to end the game last night.
- 1:55:25It didn't seem like too much to expect to have him do that again.
- 1:55:32Runners at first and third.
- 1:55:36Out of signal.
- 1:55:37the pitch on the way.
- 1:55:41Here it is.

- 1:55:50Al Kaleine at the plate.
- 1:55:54the first and third.

- 1:55:59Three to two.
- 1:56:03the A's is a team of at sixty two homers this year.
- 1:56:08Not a stretch.
- 1:56:10the pitch.
- 1:56:11Her ball outs up.
- 1:56:14And the pitching of the staff has given up forty eight home runs.
- 1:56:22Willie McCovey's eighteen home run of the year enabled the Giants to beat the Cubs.
- 1:56:27Before thirty four thousand in Chicago today.
- 1:56:30Here's the stretch.
- 1:56:31the pitch.
- 1:56:32Kaleine breaks high.
- 1:56:35Two balls and a strike.

- 1:57:02Get Terrence to lead at first base the punch.
- 1:57:05Outside ball three.
- 1:57:10Be careful here.
- 1:57:13Kaleine will not be taking anything.

- 1:57:39Why give to Terrence a little assist.
- 1:57:42He's hobbling as he will.
- 1:57:43Lifts off the field now.
- 1:57:45He went into Larrosa.
- 1:57:46He crowded him.
- 1:57:47He succeeded but drew Minter off the back.
- 1:57:51There was a chance to get out of the ending with a double play
- 1:57:53but we couldn't execute it.
- 1:57:57Kaleine drives in a big run.
- 1:58:00McCallifus scored.
- 1:58:03Campanella has played that ball nicely moving far to his left
- 1:58:06near second base.
- 1:58:08Flipped it to Larrosa who had his back turned to first
- 1:58:11and was getting Terrence really crowding him.
- 1:58:13He had a tough pivot.
- 1:58:15the catch the stretch the pitch.
- 1:58:17High.

- 1:58:33the stretch.
- 1:58:35the delivery.
- 1:58:36High outside.
- 1:58:38Ball two.
- 1:58:40Two balls no strikes.
- 1:58:43Kaleine crowded over the run battered in.
- 1:58:46It's twenty ninth of the year.
- 1:58:53Two balls no strikes.
- 1:58:56Now the stretch the pitch.
- 1:58:59Here it is inside ball three.
- 1:59:04Willie Horton will be next.
- 1:59:08Thompson having a tough eighth inning.
- 1:59:14Three balls no strikes.
- 1:59:18And Cash might be hitting away if the pitch is good.
- 1:59:21the three nothing delivery now time is called.
- 1:59:24A hot dog wrapper is going on to the field.
- 1:59:28That disturbs Thompson so he calls time to pick it up.
- 1:59:35Here's another one floating across.
- 1:59:39If he'd have left the other one alone he would have blown off the field too.
- 1:59:43Here's this one now he calls time.
- 1:59:45Picks up another wrapper.
- 1:59:49Three balls no strikes.
- 1:59:51Now a balloon starts to blow towards the field.

- 2:00:05With three and all Cash was going for it.
- 2:00:08But he missed.
- 2:00:09And he's really angry at himself.
- 2:00:11That pitch was right down the middle.
- 2:00:18Cash is really angry at himself for missing it.
- 2:00:21Three balls and a strike.
- 2:00:24Ready for the pitch.
- 2:00:27Here it is.
- 2:00:29A wild tip. He didn't mean to do it.
- 2:00:31He was taking ball four and it took his bat.
- 2:00:35Now it's down to three and two.
- 2:00:37Mincher drops back off the bag.
- 2:00:43Four to two in favor of Detroit.
- 2:00:47the A's have been stopped whole by Joe Negros.
- 2:00:52Out of sign.

- 2:01:32And Diego Cigui is going to be brought in here.
- 2:01:38Two thirds innings.
- 2:01:41There's no way that he could win this game.
- 2:01:45But he could be the loser.
- 2:01:48the second and third he struck
- 2:01:52out seven he walked only one
- 2:01:57and that was a mistake really
- 2:02:02should have been out of the

- 2:09:01comes off and Lynn Blatt will be
- 2:09:03the new pitcher that run is
- 2:09:07charged adoption I thought the
- 2:09:1240 of run better than Jim
- 2:09:25Nothrapp was that two out of
- 2:09:26three now many of the spectators
- 2:09:29begin to leave you can imagine
- 2:09:40the traffic jam might be a little
- 2:09:41bit heavy and some of the fans
- 2:09:45are maneuvering towards that end
- 2:09:49getting out a little earlier
- 2:09:55when blood will be facing Jim

- 2:22:39Oh, that extra run!
- 2:22:43They picked up on the 8.
- 2:22:45Really hurt.
- 2:22:48Now it's a 5 to 4 ballgame.
- 2:22:50You have the feeling if you can just hold them.
- 2:22:53They're going to get the Negro in the later inning.
- 2:22:56Now they knock them out here in the bottom of the 8.
- 2:23:02That's the fine game.
- 2:23:04That was only the fourth hit off of them.
- 2:23:07It was belief I lose.
- 2:23:08Took home none of the season.
- 2:23:11He now has driven in 29 runs.
- 2:23:14He has been to bat 11 straight times without a hit.
- 2:23:18Although there were several, especially last night.
- 2:23:23Most people thought he should have been cutted in for a loo to hit.
- 2:23:27He's been hitting the ball.
- 2:23:30Now Hiller comes in.
- 2:23:34John Hiller.

- 2:23:51Two of which run earned.
- 2:23:53He walked two.
- 2:23:55He struck out four.
- 2:24:00There is no way that he could be the losing pitcher of this game.
- 2:24:04But of course he could be the winner in the event.
- 2:24:10Hiller can stop.
- 2:24:12He is.
- 2:24:14Reggie Jackson will be facing the hard-throwing left-hander.
- 2:24:17Now this has been the Tigers' weakest out here as a bullpen.
- 2:24:21Hiller has one three loss two.
- 2:24:24He's making his 14th relief appearance.
- 2:24:28His earned run average is 3.11.
- 2:24:31He's allowed three home runs.
- 2:24:36Five to four on the bottom of the eighth.
- 2:24:38And Reggie Jackson will be out of the play.
- 2:24:44Reggie bounced out double and struck out against Necron.
- 2:24:56Still three halfs to go.
- 2:24:58He's got a little bit of a lead.
- 2:25:01He's got a little bit of a lead.
- 2:25:03Still three halfs.
- 2:25:09Still three halfs lost out in front of the play.
- 2:25:19the foul has really come to life.
- 2:25:24Now Hiller is set.
- 2:25:27A left-hander fire.

- 2:27:09where they were combing his
- 2:27:10hair.

- 2:27:13up.
- 2:27:13He's got the ball in.
- 2:27:20Oh that's too good.
- 2:27:25And here's Bando.
- 2:27:31Just to give you an idea how
- 2:27:33deep Stanley was playing.
- 2:27:34He only ran about five steps.
- 2:27:37Got to the wall.
- 2:27:38He's got to the wall.
- 2:27:45the put by Hiller.

- 2:30:36an extra base.
- 2:30:36Did he have a chance to score.
- 2:30:39Al Kalin holding him on at first
- 2:30:41base.
- 2:30:45Now the stretch the hesitation.
- 2:30:47Here's the best.
- 2:30:49He doesn't mean to play a
- 2:30:50ground ball to the third base.
- 2:30:52He's not going to make a play.
- 2:30:58the ball hit his body and went
- 2:30:59down to third base line.
- 2:31:01Maddox got a run to his right.
- 2:31:02Knocked the ball down.
