• 0:34
Speaker 1: Did I mess this?
• 0:35
  Speaker 2: up.
• 0:35
Speaker 2: I think you might have had one page too many.
• 0:37
  Speaker 1: No, I don't.
• 0:37
Speaker 1: Yeah, I had one page too many.
• 0:39
Speaker 1: That's what it is.
• 0:40
  Speaker 1: Well, I apologize.
• 0:41
Speaker 1: Let me go over here to Mr Marr's sheet.
• 0:44
Speaker 1: First we're going to talk to John Skeleton.
• 0:47
Speaker 1: There you go, full time RV world.
• 0:50
Speaker 1: I think it's fitting, because so many of our fellow car enthusiasts pack up in an RV, go to a car show, maybe trailering a car behind them.
• 1:05
Speaker 1: There's some sort of a draw Don't ask me what it is, but there's some sort of a draw to the RV lifestyle Freedom.
• 1:15
Speaker 1: Is that what it is?
• 1:16
  Speaker 1: I think so.
• 1:18
Speaker 3: You know, travel, travel the country, see the country or run in from the law.
• 1:23
Speaker 1: Those are my two.
• 1:24
Speaker 1: That's his no permanent address.
• 1:25
Speaker 1: Well, no, I think that they do have that nailed down.
• 1:30
Speaker 3: And I'll bet you they have it nailed down in a state that doesn't have state income tax.
• 1:34
Speaker 3: Well, let's just find out.
• 1:37
Speaker 1: Let's just find out right now, joining us now, john Skeleton, full time RVer with life on the road, how to pack wheel bearings Good morning, john, you got somebody looking a lot better than you right next to you.
• 1:52
  Speaker 1: Who's that?
• 1:53
Speaker 4: Yeah, that is Susan.
• 1:54
Speaker 4: That is my wife and partner in crime.
• 1:58
Speaker 2: See, I knew they were running from the law.
• 2:00
  Speaker 1: Yeah, Okay.
• 2:01
Speaker 1: My first question is do you know George Skeleton?
• 2:06
Speaker 4: I do know George Skeleton.
• 2:07
Speaker 4: We've never met face to face, but we have communicated frequently for many years now.
• 2:13
Speaker 1: Yeah, so are you talking to us from your RV.
• 2:20
Speaker 4: Yeah, we're talking to you from the back of the camper.
• 2:22
Speaker 4: We have a fifth wheel, so we're right here in the back of the camper.
• 2:25
Speaker 4: That's what you see behind us is our camper.
• 2:28
Speaker 1: Do you have a permanent home as well?
• 2:32
Speaker 4: No, I mean, we have a permanent address, like you guys are talking about, but this is our home.
• 2:36
Speaker 4: This is where we live every second of every day.
• 2:39
Speaker 1: Now, do you have a home base that you parked this place, that parked this thing?
• 2:43
Speaker 1: No, nope, we park it wherever we park it.
• 2:46
Speaker 1: How long have you guys been on the road?
• 2:49
Speaker 4: We started June 3rd of 22.
• 2:53
Speaker 1: Oh, wow, okay, so you're more than a year into this.
• 2:56
  Speaker 1: I had a cousin.
• 2:57
Speaker 1: He and his wife did the same thing.
• 3:00
Speaker 1: I think that they were on the road for, I don't know, six or seven years.
• 3:04
Speaker 1: I never really asked them why they ended, but they sold the fifth wheel.
• 3:10
  Speaker 1: They got caught.
• 3:11
  Speaker 4: Well there's that.
• 3:13
Speaker 1: There is that they sold the fifth wheel and moved back into a permanent residence up in Janesville, wisconsin.
• 3:19
Speaker 1: But, matter of fact, penny just said to me this past week how much they absolutely loved the lifestyle and traveling and all the people that they met.
• 3:30
Speaker 4: Yeah, that is true, we do.
• 3:31
Speaker 4: I mean, we really love it.
• 3:32
Speaker 4: Like I said, we've only been doing it for 14, 15, 16 months, whatever the math is, but we've seen things and done things that we never would have thought we would do.
• 3:41
  Speaker 4: You know?
• 3:41
Speaker 4: I mean, what is it?
• 3:43
  Speaker 4: That's what?
• 3:43
Speaker 4: 65 weeks, something like that, 70 weeks.
• 3:47
Speaker 2: Do you keep a journal or?
• 3:49
Speaker 4: It would have taken me, it would have taken us, 15 years of vacations to see the things that we've just done.
• 3:57
Speaker 1: So when you sold, where was your house that you sold to start this lifestyle?
• 4:03
Speaker 4: Back in it was in Central Indiana, just west of Indianapolis, central Indiana.
• 4:07
Speaker 1: Okay, so my family heritage is in Terre Haute Indiana.
• 4:13
  Speaker 4: Hold down.
• 4:15
Speaker 1: Well, your last name is not Armstrong, is it it?
• 4:18
  Speaker 4: is not.
• 4:18
  Speaker 1: It's Morris.
• 4:19
Speaker 1: Did you ever know any Armstrong's?
• 4:22
Speaker 1: Maybe, Good answer, with your husband sitting right next to you.
• 4:30
Speaker 3: We don't admit to knowing Don either.
• 4:32
Speaker 3: We don't know that.
• 4:35
Speaker 1: Northside or Southside, I don't know any of that.
• 4:38
Speaker 1: Actually, I've never been to Terre Haute Indiana, but all I can tell you is is that if you search the name Armstrong at least in my family it goes to Terre Haute Indiana.
• 4:49
  Speaker 1: So there's that.
• 4:51
Speaker 1: Well, we'll move on from that.
• 4:53
Speaker 3: Well, I would think one of the important things in your lifestyle is that, whoever your travel partner is, you guys get along pretty well, because you don't get away from each other very much.
• 5:06
Speaker 4: Well, I think we do.
• 5:07
Speaker 4: I mean, maybe we need to be put in separate rooms and ask that question, I don't know.
• 5:12
Speaker 4: But about the only thing I feel like we're not always eye to eye on is temperature.
• 5:18
Speaker 4: I like things hot, you know.
• 5:20
Speaker 4: I like, you know, the hot weather, hot.
• 5:23
Speaker 1: Where are you right now, John?
• 5:25
Speaker 4: We're in Virgil Utah, okay, well, the north corner.
• 5:28
Speaker 1: Okay, it'll take you about two, three days to get here, but we've had over well over a month of 105 degree days, so come on down.
• 5:39
Speaker 2: She's shaking her head.
• 5:40
Speaker 4: No, no, no no.
• 5:42
Speaker 3: Yeah, it's he sitting there in a sweatshirt and she's got a t-shirt on.
• 5:45
Speaker 3: I should tell you something.
• 5:48
Speaker 4: Well, we're leaving for your race as soon as we get down here.
• 5:50
Speaker 4: We're leaving for your race, Colorado, and I think the high temperature a couple of days is only going to be in the upper 50s.
• 5:55
Speaker 2: There you go, 60.
• 5:56
Speaker 2: Do you keep a journal or have you logged miles?
• 5:59
Speaker 2: How many miles do you know or estimate that you've traveled?
• 6:03
Speaker 4: Well, we have 14,500 miles roughly on the camper itself and we have about 52,000 miles on the truck.
• 6:13
Speaker 1: What kind of truck?
• 6:15
  Speaker 4: There's a 22 Ram 3500.
• 6:17
  Speaker 4: Uh duly.
• 6:21
Speaker 1: Has he got the Cubbins diesel in it?
• 6:22
Speaker 1: Oh yeah, it does.
• 6:23
Speaker 1: And how's that working out for you?
• 6:28
Speaker 4: It's an awesome truck.
• 6:29
  Speaker 4: It really is.
• 6:29
Speaker 4: I mean, we have a this camper weighs probably eight and a half nine tons, something like that, and you know, that truck gets us over the Rockies, Doesn't even really break a sweat.
• 6:40
  Speaker 3: And who does?
• 6:40
Speaker 3: Who does the majority of the driving?
• 6:42
Speaker 3: I'll let the drive, yeah.
• 6:46
  Speaker 4: Every single second.
• 6:48
Speaker 1: So whose idea was this?
• 6:49
Speaker 1: To sell the house and started this RV thing?
• 6:52
  Speaker 1: Yours, John.
• 6:54
Speaker 4: Well, I mean I, it was my idea, I brought it up, oh come on.
• 6:57
  Speaker 1: John.
• 6:57
  Speaker 1: Now be honest.
• 6:58
Speaker 4: It's your fault, let me give you the entire.
• 7:00
Speaker 4: There's a look of surprise on your wife's face.
• 7:02
Speaker 4: I can squeeze in this entire decision making process in about one sentence.
• 7:06
Speaker 4: We're watching TV in November of 19, 2019.
• 7:10
  Speaker 4: And I don't know.
• 7:12
Speaker 4: I think we're watching something on the national parks and I looked at Susan and I said would you ever think about just selling everything and travel the country she goes?
• 7:19
Speaker 1: yeah, that was it that was our decision making process so well, but you're, so you're in central Indiana.
• 7:25
Speaker 1: I mean, what did you do there for a living?
• 7:27
Speaker 1: Apparently, you worked at some point.
• 7:30
Speaker 4: Yeah, and I still do.
• 7:30
Speaker 4: I work full time as well.
• 7:32
Speaker 4: I'm a banker, so I do bank things.
• 7:34
Speaker 1: Yeah, do you have a teller window notched in?
• 7:37
Speaker 3: the side of the RV, right back there in the back, say that window back there.
• 7:40
Speaker 2: They're sitting on a stack of money.
• 7:42
Speaker 4: No, no, no, no, now you know, why he's running Do you.
• 7:46
  Speaker 2: Yeah, you do.
• 7:48
Speaker 3: Focus on any type of areas to visit.
• 7:51
Speaker 3: I know you said you're in Utah right now and I know Utah's got some stunning national parks, but is that is the national park still a theme that you're trying to visit as many of them as you can while you're traveling?
• 8:04
Speaker 4: I wouldn't say that visiting all the national parks is necessarily our goal, but the thing is, the national parks are just so beautiful that that if you get close to one, you can't not go Right.
• 8:13
  Speaker 2: Right.
• 8:14
Speaker 4: But we so, like I said, we left in June of 22 was when we left Indiana and we have basically not completely but almost exclusively spent the entire time west of the Mississippi.
• 8:25
Speaker 4: So we've been in most of the states west of the Mississippi.
• 8:29
Speaker 4: Now next year we're going to do most of the states east of the Mississippi, um, and then the year after that I think we're going to try to spend the summer up in Alaska.
• 8:37
  Speaker 1: Oh wow.
• 8:38
Speaker 1: So do you have any plans to, after you've got done with all of this touring with the fifth wheel, of hanging up the fifth wheel or parking it somewhere and getting back to real life?
• 8:52
Speaker 4: Yeah, we've talked about that, you know.
• 8:54
Speaker 4: Um, where do we want to?
• 8:57
Speaker 4: You know, put down roots, permanent roots.
• 9:00
Speaker 4: You know we've narrowed it down to a couple of states and three states.
• 9:04
  Speaker 4: What?
• 9:04
  Speaker 1: are those?
• 9:05
Speaker 1: What are those states?
• 9:07
Speaker 4: Uh, south Carolina and New Mexico or top are the the top of the pack right now.
• 9:12
  Speaker 1: Okay.
• 9:13
  Speaker 3: Why?
• 9:13
Speaker 3: That's pretty wide range between their geographic range.
• 9:17
Speaker 4: Again, it goes back to our differences of of climate.
• 9:20
Speaker 4: You know I like hot and humid, so South Carolina is my, is my jam.
• 9:24
Speaker 4: Um, she doesn't like hot and humid, so that's where North or where New Mexico comes in.
• 9:29
Speaker 4: So, and they're both awesome states, we've been both of them.
• 9:33
Speaker 4: Um, they're both awesome states.
• 9:35
  Speaker 4: We love them.
• 9:35
Speaker 4: In fact, we're headed to New Mexico right now, here in the next month, for the uh balloon fiesta.
• 9:41
Speaker 1: So what, what kind of uh RV do you have there?
• 9:45
Speaker 4: We have a 2022 Jaco pinnacle.
• 9:49
Speaker 4: It's a 41 foot fifth wheel bath and a half Slide outs.
• 10:00
Speaker 4: Slide outs we have three slides.
• 10:04
Speaker 3: And Jaco seems to be kind of one of the more popular versions of fifth wheel travel trailers on the market.
• 10:11
  Speaker 3: Is that correct?
• 10:13
Speaker 4: Yeah, that is right, jaco is very popular.
• 10:16
Speaker 4: Of course, just like any manufacturer of anything, you have different levels and we have a pinnacle and those are good full time.
• 10:24
Speaker 4: For people who live in it full time and travel a lot, jaco pinnacle is really a solid build.
• 10:30
Speaker 4: As opposed to somebody maybe only does it over the summer or they live in it, but they live in it at a permanent location for a long period of time, john.
• 10:40
Speaker 1: All I know is that it can be a lot of work.
• 10:43
Speaker 1: Yeah, once you get to where you're going I mean you're going to work half a day get the thing set up.
• 10:50
Speaker 4: Well, you know, setting it up actually is really a piece of cake.
• 10:54
Speaker 4: It's the tear down that takes a little bit longer, okay.
• 10:57
Speaker 1: Whatever, but I mean there's a lot of work involved in that.
• 11:01
Speaker 1: Here's the other thing.
• 11:01
Speaker 1: Huh, 41 feet behind my car, let's see, can I make that right hand turn in downtown Terre Haute?
• 11:14
Speaker 4: Yeah, that is the challenge.
• 11:16
Speaker 4: And also when we go east next year I'll be looking real closely at overhead because we're 13 foot four inches high and you go out in the east and sometimes those overpasses not on the interstates, but when you get off the interstates sometimes those overpasses aren't that high.
• 11:33
Speaker 4: So you have to put some thought into it and there's software, of course.
• 11:38
Speaker 3: So there is an app that'll talk to you about low clearance.
• 11:42
Speaker 1: How about that five foot nine bridge video that you see people trying to put their vehicle, like yours, underneath?
• 11:48
Speaker 1: That wipes all of the air conditioning off the top of it as they go underneath it.
• 11:54
Speaker 4: Yeah, in our hometown of Avon, where we were before we started, there's a low railroad overpass.
• 11:59
Speaker 4: Two, three times a year you'll see some UPS truck or some delivery truck to shear the top off of it.
• 12:06
Speaker 4: They have to shut it down for a day to fix it.
• 12:08
Speaker 2: Is there any maintenance that you need to do on that part of it, that motorhome or the travel?
• 12:13
  Speaker 4: trailer.
• 12:14
Speaker 4: Oh yeah, constant maintenance, constant maintenance.
• 12:16
Speaker 4: You know well, your last week, you know, we repacked the bearings.
• 12:20
  Speaker 4: That's super important.
• 12:21
Speaker 4: I was up on the roof this past week, you know, cleaning the condenser and evaporator coils on all three of the air conditioning units.
• 12:29
Speaker 4: Next week I have to clean and treat the roof itself because it was been out for a year and a half from the UV and the dirt and the sap and everything like that.
• 12:38
Speaker 4: So I go up there and clean and kind of put a protective coating down over that, you know.
• 12:45
Speaker 4: So there is a lot of maintenance.
• 12:46
Speaker 4: It doesn't just pitch it up and go and forget about it.
• 12:49
Speaker 1: And Susan, not only I'm sure that you probably take care of the inside of it, but then you have to put up with him after he's been up on the top of that thing all afternoon.
• 13:01
Speaker 4: That's, he's not too bad about that.
• 13:03
Speaker 4: Not too bad, not too bad?
• 13:05
Speaker 3: Yeah, so do you.
• 13:06
Speaker 3: Well, I have a friend who has who RVs and he talks about having to make appointments or schedule into different RV parks around the country and how some of them are.
• 13:19
Speaker 3: You know, a booked up for a year in advance.
• 13:22
Speaker 3: How do you deal with getting to an area, because I'm sure you have to plan on if you're going into the Yosemite area, where you're going to stay, and how far in advance Do you have to book that.
• 13:34
Speaker 3: And then, once you get there, how long do you typically stay?
• 13:40
Speaker 4: Yeah, that's a long answer to that.
• 13:41
Speaker 4: So when we QR planning, you know, the first thing I look at is can we have a clear view of the sky?
• 13:49
Speaker 4: Because I use starlink to stay connected.
• 13:51
  Speaker 4: Do my job.
• 13:52
Speaker 4: So I have to have a clear view of the sky.
• 13:54
Speaker 4: It can't be under tree.
• 13:54
Speaker 4: We have not run into I don't think very often have we run into a place where we couldn't get in.
• 14:02
Speaker 4: Now some of them are busy, but we also plan it out a long time in advance.
• 14:08
Speaker 4: I mean, we've already kind of sketched out our 2024 plan.
• 14:12
Speaker 4: You know, here in the next two or three months Susan will start calling them and making the reservations.
• 14:17
Speaker 4: But we haven't really run into that as far as not being able to get where we want to go.
• 14:22
Speaker 4: But we usually stay somewhere a week to two weeks, maybe a little longer, but usually we get in on a Saturday, we leave the next Saturday or the following Saturday.
• 14:33
Speaker 1: Do you feel like you're going broke at any time on this adventure?
• 14:37
  Speaker 1: No, he's a banker.
• 14:39
Speaker 2: He's got money in his fingertips.
• 14:40
Speaker 1: Well, I'm, all I can think of is he's a banker, and so he's got his finger on the money pulse, if you will.
• 14:46
Speaker 4: Check your account no we, you know, not really.
• 14:49
Speaker 4: I don't really feel like we're going broke.
• 14:51
Speaker 4: You know we're financially conservative people and so you know we were able to excuse me.
• 14:59
Speaker 4: You know we heard our house free and clear, so when we sold it, that's what we used to.
• 15:03
Speaker 4: So we wrote a check for the camper, wrote a check for the truck, so we don't owe anybody anything.
• 15:08
Speaker 4: So you know we don't have a house or car payment, no real estate taxes, no utilities or anything like that.
• 15:14
Speaker 1: So yeah, but those hookup fees in some of these parks that you guys visit can be pretty pricey at times.
• 15:26
Speaker 4: Yeah, they sure can.
• 15:26
Speaker 4: They've gotten really expensive over the last two or three years, you know.
• 15:30
Speaker 4: So we get full hookups, meaning water, sewer, electrical and you know we're probably paying I don't know, I haven't done the math because I'm kind of afraid to but you know we're paying probably 50 to $60 a night to stay somewhere Cheaper to hotel, yeah, but every night.
• 15:47
Speaker 1: I mean they have no other place.
• 15:48
Speaker 1: I mean you don't pull that thing up in front of my house here and stay in that for a week.
• 15:53
Speaker 1: True, so it's every.
• 15:54
  Speaker 1: Every night it's 50, 60 bucks.
• 15:57
  Speaker 4: Yeah, 30, 30 nights a week.
• 15:58
Speaker 4: You know we're paying 50 to $60 a night every night, but that still isn't you know and that's still you know our mortgage payment and real estate taxes and utilities and stuff like that.
• 16:08
Speaker 4: I mean, I guess you know, it's kind of a break even.
• 16:12
Speaker 3: How do you deal with the mail when you're on the road?
• 16:17
Speaker 4: So we have a mail service in Livingston Texas that handles all of that for us.
• 16:22
Speaker 4: So all of our mail goes there.
• 16:23
Speaker 4: That's our official residence.
• 16:25
Speaker 4: So on our tax forms, driver's licenses, everything with my employer, everything is listed as Livingston Texas.
• 16:33
Speaker 4: So all the mail goes there.
• 16:36
Speaker 4: You know, any mail that's important they send it to you via email.
• 16:40
Speaker 4: Most of the stuff that goes to that place is junk by and large not always, but most of us junk.
• 16:46
Speaker 4: Susan calls every couple of weeks goes over with them.
• 16:50
Speaker 4: Hey, what's in our mailbox?
• 16:51
Speaker 4: Either try ship or send it to us and then we give them the address of whatever park we're going to be at next week.
• 16:57
Speaker 3: And I noticed you chose a state with no state income tax.
• 17:02
Speaker 4: Well, that was an actor.
• 17:03
Speaker 4: That was absolutely a factor, I'm not going to lie.
• 17:05
Speaker 4: But also another, a bigger factor is you know some states, to be a resident state you have to actually live in that state at a certain number of nights.
• 17:14
Speaker 4: Texas doesn't have that requirement, At least not yet.
• 17:17
Speaker 4: They might, but they don't right now.
• 17:18
Speaker 4: So we can be official Texas residents and we can never spend a night in Texas.
• 17:23
Speaker 4: Not every state is like that.
• 17:26
Speaker 3: Well, you don't know what you're missing if you've never spent a night in Texas.
• 17:28
  Speaker 3: We love Texas.
• 17:29
Speaker 4: Now we do spend about.
• 17:30
Speaker 4: We do spend about a month every year in Texas because that's where our dentist is, that's where various doctors appointments are.
• 17:36

• 18:05
Speaker 4: When we were here the first couple of days we were here right across the street from us some guy pulled in and backed his Lamborghini out of this trailer and he just parked it right here.
• 18:15
Speaker 4: So we were looking at a Lamborghini for three or four days.
• 18:18

  Speaker 1: Oh my God.
• 21:24
  Speaker 2: Here's some.

• 21:37
Speaker 2: Nevada it's illegal to ride a camel on a highway.

• 22:03
Speaker 1: I think so, yeah.
• 22:04
Speaker 3: Is that the thing?

Speaker 2: It's against the law to disrobe in your car in Sag Habba, sag Habba.
• 22:15
Speaker 2: Don't disrobe in your car, so that means you can't be saggy in your Habba.
• 22:19
Speaker 2: Oklahoma is another one for you, Conrad.
• 22:21
Speaker 2: It's illegal to read a comic book while driving.
• 22:24
Speaker 2: Well, that makes sense.
• 22:26
Speaker 2: Yeah Well, I don't know how many can read there, but by law in Oregon you must yield to pedestrians when driving on the sidewalk.
• 22:33
Speaker 2: Who would have thought?
• 22:36
Speaker 1: Driving on the sidewalk.

• 23:03
Speaker 2: It's against the law in Wisconsin for a person to ride a bicycle with their hands off the handlebars.
• 23:11

• 23:15
Speaker 3: You were breaking the law.
• 23:16
Speaker 1: Yeah Well, yes, I was.

• 23:44
