- 0:15rescheduled from the original date, which was
- 0:17a rainout on May 9. The crowd at this game was
- 0:19just a little more than 15 ,000, by far the fewest
- 0:22in the past 15 years. The Yankees were managed
- 0:24by Billy Martin and the Mets were managed by
- 0:26Joe Torre. This audio recording is from the radio

- 4:061951 Hamburg Street in Rotterdam. Don Anderson
- 4:10is the friendly face you'll see when you drive
- 4:12in. Don's got some good news and he's got some
- 4:15bad news. The bad news is gas prices are going
- 4:19up again this summer. There isn't a darn thing
- 4:22you can do about it. However, the good news,
- 4:24well, John can help you get the most gas mileage
- 4:27out of that car of yours with an accurate and
- 4:30expert tune -up before you start your vacation
- 4:32trips. Here, there, or anywhere, John's got an
- 4:36electronic engine analyzer. It can do the job
- 4:39quickly and perk up that old buggy so it won't
- 4:42waste a drop of that precious fuel. You can save
- 4:45money if your engine runs at the peak of its
- 4:48efficiency. Now is the time to get... done before
- 4:51the summer wanderlust strikes you at carman service
- 4:54make an appointment for either service or state
- 4:57inspection simply by calling 374 -6708 pure don's
- 5:02busy he's got great work on everybody's car All
- 6:34right. I think Cedro, a little concerned in his
- 7:14last two outings, they've hit more home runs
- 7:16often than they had hit all of the rest of the
- 7:19year that he pitched. And evidently, you know,
- 7:23it kind of surprised me he was coming more sidearm
- 7:27than three -quarter. And you know, a lot of times
- 7:29when he comes sidearm, the ball comes in a little
- 7:31flat. And it seems to me they were really getting
- 7:34more of the ball than they normally would or
- 7:37Cedro's ball wasn't dipping the way it usually
- 7:39does. Maybe he wants to work whatever kinks out
- 7:42here and have somebody really look at him. Not
- 7:47only have our starting pitchers been getting
- 7:49bombed, but the relief corps that was doing so
- 7:52well. Well, even last night, Sparky Lyle had
- 7:55to get relief help from the youngster, Ken Clay.
- 7:59Ken Clay picking up a save. You lead the other
- 8:01way around. That's right. Clay really showed
- 8:04me something. He came in and one of the toughest
- 8:05fights you could come in. and walked that man,
- 8:11and then come back and get an error, and it didn't
- 8:16shake him up. Well, the Mets take the field,
- 8:21and we'll give you their lineup now. Lee Mazzilli
- 8:23will play center field and leadoff. Bobby Valentine
- 8:25will play shortstop and bat second. Steve Henderson
- 8:28in left field batting third. Ed Cranepool playing
- 8:31first. Second base, the veteran Felix. much about
- 11:16this kid Slagle I mean McCall but he's seven
- 11:20and two at Syracuse so he's another name you
- 11:22can throw on the hopper you know there are a
- 11:24lot of names sitting inside talking with Bill
- 11:27Kane there about three kids batting around 350
- 11:31for Syracuse that's six so far in the series.
- 12:34was rained out the first attempt and this game
- 12:36starting at 4 o 'clock it's still not a bad crowd
- 13:37That was a perfect double play ball. Me on gliding
- 13:40to his right. All he had to do was flip it. From
- 14:30Brooklyn and center and Bruce Boyd clear out
- 14:32and right. Ron Hodges flashing signs from Murray.
- 14:36Pitch is a called strike to win. It's 2 -1. Boy,
- 14:42each year you feel older. I've played baseball
- 14:45in the Army with Doug Flynn's father down in
- 14:47Kentucky. Here's a 2 -1 pitch. Inside, ball three.
- 14:53Three balls, one strike. Is that the kid that
- 14:56was with Cincinnati? Right. Every time you hit.
- 16:39Why'd I switch it? in the 14th Son, if I could
- 18:22think of Rube's name right offhand. But from
- 18:26what the notes say, Myrick's in there for the
- 18:27full nine no matter what happens. They're a little
- 18:31short on pitching. And Rube's wasting his time
- 18:34going out there. He didn't stay too long. No.
- 18:37You know, I was wondering, the Mets are hungering
- 18:40for some power hitters. How they let Cliff Johnson
- 18:42get waved out of the National League. takes the
- 18:49strike. Yankees leading one to nothing. Top of
- 18:52the first base is loaded. Still no outs. Left
- 18:56-hander Bob Amarek running into trouble. Got
- 18:59in trouble when beyond. Bob with a possible double
- 19:01play grounder. up and said, I'm going home. I
- 20:02can't stand it. Carlos May goes down swinging
- 20:06on a wide breaking curve ball and there's one
- 20:08away. You know, the strange thing is the Rangers
- 20:11came back to win that ball game. They were way
- 20:13behind. They beat Minnesota. And yet Eddie Stanky,
- 20:18who just the day before said he loves baseball
- 20:21so much, he's still interested in it. But he
- 20:24is a homebody as you were telling me, which was
- 20:26kind of surprising for me to hear. Why was that
- 20:29surprising? Well, no. Playing against him, he
- 20:32must be a Jekyll and Hyde, because when you play
- 20:34against him, he's the meanest man I ever met.
- 20:37And Healy swings on a fastball and doesn't get
- 20:39it. And when you say he loves the birds and the
- 20:42bees and the Boy Scouts and the open air and
- 20:45the dogs and cats, it's hard for me to believe.
- 20:47I figured he'd kick everything. Here's the one
- 20:53-strike pitch to Healy. Swung on and missed.
- 20:550 -2. Bases loaded, one out. nothing. We're in
- 21:01the first inning. I wish you'd stayed around
- 21:07just long enough. I know you just wish. Here's
- 21:11the two -strike pitch. The curveball is a Walker
- 21:33must have gone out and said, we're going to take
- 21:35your meal money away from you if you don't pitch
- 21:37better. Here's George Zebra, the switch -hitting
- 21:43third baseman. And he fouls the first pitch off
- 21:47over the first base dugout. the American League

- 25:32every step of the way. They have those pipe repairs
- 25:35as well. 2656 Hamburg Street, Schenectady, for
- 25:41the best tobacco, pipes, and cigars. Well, we've
- 25:47got a beautiful day for this mayor's trophy game.
- 25:50You know, if you're riding around in your car,
- 25:52you don't have anything else to do. Come out
- 25:54here, relax, enjoy a ball game, and help the
- 25:56Sandlot kids of the greater metropolitan area.
- 26:00For a worthy cause. And both these clubs would
- 26:04have loved to have the day off. The Mets will
- 26:06be traveling. After this game, the Yankees got
- 26:10to go home, rest up for that big weekend series
- 26:12with the Red Sox. Red Sox red hot right now.
- 26:16Winning ballgames like they did the year they
- 26:18won the pennant. Coming back in the late innings.
- 26:22And hitting the long ball in the way they're
- 26:24going now, they could very easily set a home
- 26:26run record this year. They have 29 home runs
- 26:34in their last 10 games. Unbelievable, though.
- 26:39Well, they're in first place by four and a half
- 26:41games over the Yankees and five and a half over
- 26:43Baltimore. Seven and a half over Cleveland, eight
- 26:47and a half over Milwaukee, 11 over the Tigers,
- 26:49and 15 and a half over the Toronto Blue Jays.
- 26:52Lee Mazzelli against Dick Tidrow, and the first
- 26:54pitch is looped to left. It's going to slice
- 26:56foul. He's got it, and bobbles it to Holton.
- 27:19White got it knee -high, bobbled the ball, but
- 27:22kept running, juggled it a minute, and then picked
- 27:24it up. So there's one away. That'll bring on
- 27:28Bobby Valentine, the shortstop. Yankees have
- 27:37a 3 -0 lead, playing the bottom of the first
- 27:38here at Shea. The 15th annual Mayor's Trophy
- 27:43game. Haley had a short conference with Dick
- 27:49Tidrell. Now he spins and comes back to the plate.
- 27:54A lot of new faces on the Mets. Here's the first
- 28:01pitch to Valentine. And he takes a strike on
- 28:05the outside corner. Bobby Valentine is new. Lenny
- 28:09Randall is new from last year. Doug Flynn. Steve
- 28:34Anderson. Yeah, that's true. No doubt about that.
- 29:22Nobody else has been around long enough. come

- 57:03I tell you, he throws without stepping, I guess,

- 1:02:37to be a pretty good hitter. I don't know where
- 1:02:41they're going to put him. He's playing third
- 1:02:42right now. The left -handed kicks and the fastball
- 1:02:49is hit. on the New York Yankee Home of Champions

- 1:03:46station in the Tri -Cities and the home of Lee

- 1:03:52Z. 3WD, WWWD, Schenectady. Bucky Dent reached
- 1:04:01on catcher's error interference, really, his
- 1:04:04first time up. Not a time at bat for Bucky Dent.
- 1:04:24I'll write to Dick Hauser in the coaching box
- 1:04:26at third. Nothing and two on Bucky Dent. Absolutely
- 1:04:33beautiful day for this mayor's trophy game here
- 1:04:36at Shea. Yankees' thoughts are towards the weekend.
- 1:04:42The big series with the Red Sox. Down low, ball
- 1:04:46and two strikes. Talk about these jet flags.
- 1:04:52over Shea Stadium and being so noisy. The crowd
- 1:04:54is really going to be noisy at the stadium on
- 1:04:56the weekend. 1 -2 curve. Bounce too short. Backhanded
- 1:05:01by Valentine. Throw to second one. Back to first.
- 1:05:03Not quite in time. Pretty play. Valentine to
- 1:05:08Flynn who made a beautiful pivot but Bucky Dent
- 1:05:10beat the return throw so they get the fourth
- 1:05:13play. 6 -4. I see the pitch is hit. Nick Houser
- 1:05:29calls him over now to give him the bunt sign,
- 1:05:31which in all probability it will be. Tidrow is
- 1:05:37up once and bounced to second base. McCall, who
- 1:05:41throws right -handed, bats left -handed. Youngblood
- 1:05:46comes in at third. Dent leads the way. Throw
- 1:05:49to first, but Bucky's back. Youngblood was charging
- 1:05:54in at third base. He squares and takes a strike
- 1:05:59right down the middle. He started a bunt, drew
- 1:06:01the bat back. It was right down the pipe. One
- 1:06:05man out in the top of the fourth. The Yankees
- 1:06:07leading 3 -1. Myrick to the belt. McCall squares,
- 1:06:18bunts. It's a good one. McCall wheels, goes to
- 1:06:20first base. They get McCall, but what a beautiful
- 1:06:24sacrifice. Bunt moving dense. to second base.
- 1:06:29I'd say Mickey Morabito has moved into our booth
- 1:06:32here. Mickey's been very busy with the All -Star
- 1:06:35game coming up. I understand it's a complete
- 1:06:41sellout. A lot of people have been asking me
- 1:06:47for tickets, but one big game always, especially
- 1:06:55at Yankee Stadium. We'll be batting for the first
- 1:07:01time in the ballgame. And Lou takes a pitch.
- 1:07:04Eyeball one. On deck, Roy White. Dead at second
- 1:07:12base with two out. Stretch by Myrick. And the
- 1:07:19slow curve is low. Ball two. Gorman and Hank
- 1:07:35Shaw are back in harness both umpired for long
- 1:08:17Or negative. But he does have a severe bruise.
- 1:08:20It sure didn't look like it the way he hit that
- 1:08:22ball. A double for Piniella. And the Yankees
- 1:08:27on three hits have four runs. And the batter
- 1:08:30Roy White. Roy reached down an error and scored
- 1:08:32and hit into a double play. Two men out. Curve
- 1:08:36is in there. Strike one call. Red Sox, I remember
- 1:08:52Lou talking about a high pop. The infield, Joel
- 1:08:56Youngblood, the third baseman under it, and makes
- 1:08:59the catch, backing up. But the Yankees pick up
- 1:09:02a run on one hit. No errors and a man left, and
- 1:09:06at the end of three and a half, the Yankees four
- 1:09:08and the Mets one. At Firestone, it's spring bargain

- 1:10:44summer. Joel Youngblood, who has been installed
- 1:10:49at third base, will lead it. off. Right -hand
- 1:10:52batter. And McCall's first pitch, a curve is
- 1:10:57in there. Strike one called. Youngblood has been
- 1:11:00about 27 times this year with five hits. Two
- 1:11:03of them doubles. One RBI. Changeup low and inside.
- 1:11:08It's one -on -one. Doug Flynn is on deck. The
- 1:11:18Yankees in front, 4 -1. This curve hit high.
- 1:12:01what they can do. Doug Flynn walked his first
- 1:12:05time up, takes a strike. Coming into the ballpark
- 1:12:08today, Youngster stopped and asked me for his
- 1:12:10autograph. Very shy Youngster. Who did it turn
- 1:12:13out to be? But Joe Torre's son has a high fly.

- 1:40:07he gave, and Healy came up ready to throw, but
- 1:40:09then he came back. Managers like to see that.
- 1:40:12Even if you're not going, if you give a good

- 1:42:02They got him. Good throw by Healy. Well, it sure
