- 0:18SPEAKER_01: Welcome to the Operation Game Night Podcast.
- 0:21SPEAKER_01: We are back.
- 0:22SPEAKER_01: And better than ever, joining me as always, co-captain of the ship, Clayton Gable.
- 0:27SPEAKER_01: How are you doing, Clay?
- 0:29SPEAKER_00: I am I'm sad, Travis.
- 0:31SPEAKER_01: Why?
- 0:32SPEAKER_00: Because I have to experience you through this blasted computer monitor again after I spent a glorious, fun-filled weekend out in Colorado Springs seeing you in the flesh.
- 0:45SPEAKER_00: So this just feels cheap.
- 0:47SPEAKER_00: This doesn't feel good.
- 0:48SPEAKER_01: It is a bit diminished, and it's certainly not the same experience.
- 0:51SPEAKER_01: But we had a great time while you were here, and we will certainly be together again soon for PAX Unplugged.
- 0:59SPEAKER_01: So uh if you're out there listening, uh whether you are new or old to the podcast, uh, we are going to PAX Unplugged this year.
- 1:07SPEAKER_01: So buy your tickets now.
- 1:09SPEAKER_01: Book the Airbnb, book that hotel room, treat yourself, and come join us at PAX Unplugged in December in Philadelphia.
- 1:19SPEAKER_00: The Keystone State.
- 1:20SPEAKER_01: The Keystone State, sure.
- 1:22SPEAKER_01: Uh yeah, we'll be there.
- 1:24SPEAKER_01: We'll be together again soon.
- 1:25SPEAKER_01: But while you were here, we got some gaming done.
- 1:28SPEAKER_01: Um, this is gonna be a bit of a shorter episode this time, but we just kind of want to reminisce and talk about our time together, talk about the games that we played, kind of give some general impressions.
- 1:38SPEAKER_01: Some were new, some are old.
- 1:40SPEAKER_01: And uh yeah, we're gonna just kind of do a uh extended debrief.
- 1:44SPEAKER_01: Maybe we'll hit a quick over the fence at the end, but most of the time we're gonna be squarely on the fence and talk about a debrief of a gaming weekend that uh we both really enjoyed.
- 1:56SPEAKER_01: So Clay, why don't you kick it kick it off?
- 1:59SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so uh just some background here, since we're on the fence.
- 2:03SPEAKER_00: Um I went out there, you know, part of my, you know, I separated from the military uh active duty, but I still am in the reserves and I work for the Air Force Academy.
- 2:13SPEAKER_00: So I had the chance to go out there for a work trip for my reserve job.
- 2:18SPEAKER_00: So unfortunately, it wasn't just a fun trip, but it was a it was good to get back out there and we made the most of the limited opportunity we had to actually get some gaming in.
- 2:29SPEAKER_00: Would have I liked to game from sunup to sundown for four days straight?
- 2:32SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 2:33SPEAKER_00: But we did get a couple nice evenings together, um, starting with some time at your house.
- 2:39SPEAKER_00: You picked me up from my hotel and you dined me at my favorite fast food chain in and out um with your lovely wife and Gwenny.
- 2:51SPEAKER_00: And we went back and we got to it.
- 2:54SPEAKER_00: And the first thing we played was Reforest, which you had been you'd been pretty, pretty high on on the podcast.
- 3:03SPEAKER_00: Um, and let me tell you, it was nice having a game taught to me again because this doesn't happen often.
- 3:10SPEAKER_00: So it was just a it was like a warm blanket being cuddled over me, just how being able to just sit there and be the one that just didn't need to know anything.
- 3:21SPEAKER_00: I didn't need to know the rules, you just told them all to me, and it was great.
- 3:25SPEAKER_00: I just sat there and I played and I had a great time.
- 3:28SPEAKER_01: Getting all cuddled up in my teach of Free Forest.
- 3:33SPEAKER_00: Yes, it was a great teach.
- 3:34SPEAKER_00: You'd think you were out here doing this all the time, Travis.
- 3:38SPEAKER_01: So, what what were your initial impressions?
- 3:41SPEAKER_01: Because we that was the first game of the night, and I felt like as somebody who does not host many game nights, I felt like it might have fallen a little flat with you, maybe compared to like a Wingspan pocket or something like that.
- 3:54SPEAKER_01: Like it felt like it wasn't quite on that level, like of enthusiasm, but maybe the teach was bad, maybe the game dragged on a little too long.
- 4:03SPEAKER_01: Like, where did that fall in your scale?
- 4:06SPEAKER_01: None of that is true.
- 4:07SPEAKER_00: It was not, it was not an error in game night planning on your part, nor was it a poor teach.
- 4:14SPEAKER_00: Um, and then nor did it drag on too long.
- 4:18SPEAKER_00: It's just it's just too puzzly for my brain.
- 4:22SPEAKER_00: Like, I I see everything that it's doing, and I'm like, this is clever, this is good.
- 4:27SPEAKER_00: I like this, I like the small form factor.
- 4:30SPEAKER_00: But at the end of the day, there were just so many options in this hand of cards.
- 4:35SPEAKER_00: Like, you get a hand of cards and you you can spend some of the cards to pay to place other cards out, then you have decisions whether you want to place them over top of other cards, and like when you want to start growing cards up, and then there's goals, and each card has an ability when you play it, maybe an end-of-round thing.
- 4:55SPEAKER_00: And at the end of the day, it just felt a little overwhelming for my first time playing it.
- 5:01SPEAKER_00: Like, I mean, well, don't get me wrong, I didn't I didn't bust any uh blood vessels trying to think too hard, yeah.
- 5:07SPEAKER_00: But I I didn't feel like I would did very well, and I was okay with that, but I you know, I got fixated on those type of games.
- 5:16SPEAKER_00: I usually just I know I'm not gonna do well because there's too many things going on.
- 5:22SPEAKER_00: I don't understand how it best is supposed to come together in a strategy.
- 5:26SPEAKER_00: Yeah, well, I just you know, the first card I see that looks interesting was like kind of leaning me into ferns, and then I just spent the whole game pretty much milling the deck looking for ferns, and that was fine, like that's good.
- 5:40SPEAKER_00: But I I felt like I missed out on a lot of the depth of strategy there, but it was tight, it was a tight 30-minute game, it was a small box, and for the right audience, there is a lot of clever card play opportunity, yeah.
- 5:55SPEAKER_01: And to be honest, you said, like, oh, I need a bunch of ferns, I need a bunch of ferns because this card allows me to score extra points when I have more ferns.
- 6:05SPEAKER_01: And that was the first time that I had played that game, either solo or otherwise, where I had had like somebody have a clear objective or like a clear strategy to say, I need all the ferns I can get, so I can grow them all over the mountain, so I can score more points at the end.
- 6:22SPEAKER_01: Because typically I feel like I'm trying to maximize the ones that I have out, but it's not like I need this clear path to victory by accumulating the most amount of whatever.
- 6:31SPEAKER_01: And I actually ended up with a card that said like plus three points for every canopy tree adjacent, and canopy means it's on the top of each of those stacks of cards, and so I'm like frantically trying to like comb through the deck for trees that will fit the needs to go into these different biomes or like regions of my mountain, and also accumulate the cards I need to pay for those trees because those trees are expensive, and like to do that before the game runs out.
- 6:59SPEAKER_01: I I guess I had not had that level of like clear intention and strategy before, which is good to see.
- 7:07SPEAKER_01: Like, it's cool that that exists in there.
- 7:09SPEAKER_01: I just don't know if the randomized cards will get you there every time to where you flip that one card and you're like, ah, all is clear.
- 7:17SPEAKER_01: I know exactly what I have to do now.
- 7:19SPEAKER_01: So yeah, what so I'm I I'm glad you enjoyed it.
- 7:22SPEAKER_00: Um yeah, I enjoy playing any game.
- 7:25SPEAKER_00: Would it be a game that I'm dying to go back to?
- 7:28SPEAKER_00: Probably not, just because it it requires the it's just too much thinking at the end of the day for my brain.
- 7:37SPEAKER_00: Uh I just like I see those cards in my hand, and I don't I feel like I just can't properly evaluate all of the different things I might be able to do with that card.
- 7:51SPEAKER_00: Yeah, you know, because there there isn't a a science to building up the the layers of your forest, like you stack these cards on top of each other, and you want to have the ones that can be in shade, and you want to be able to stack on top, and you don't want to take too big a jumps, or else you won't be able to stack any more cards on top of it.
- 8:09SPEAKER_00: So you have to kind of consider that, and then you consider like what the abilities of the cards are, then you look for any of these end game things that you might want.
- 8:17SPEAKER_00: So just like the sheer breadth of opportunity on every card was just a bit overwhelming.
- 8:24SPEAKER_00: So um yeah, didn't hate it by any stretch, and certainly again, um I'm always down to play a game that somebody else is teaching me, and I can just, you know, find that one thing, and I just kind of had to ignore the cards I was drawing for the most part because I just didn't want to try to try to evaluate all that, but yeah, it's a cool game, yeah.
- 8:49SPEAKER_01: Um, I think that like the rules of level and adjacency for the different plants really complicate that decision that you have to make because if they were laid out in a flat role, a flat row across your tableau that you're building, a la wingspan pocket, it becomes really clear.
- 9:09SPEAKER_01: Like, I need to put them in this order to score the most amount of points, or at least clearer.
- 9:13SPEAKER_01: But you put them in this pyramid shape, and all of a sudden you have the middle two are adjacent to three other cards, four other cards, and all of a sudden it's like, whoa, like that complexity just increased, and that decision got more complicated.
- 9:29SPEAKER_01: So um, yeah, I'm I'm glad you enjoyed it.
- 9:32SPEAKER_01: Um, maybe not for you, but I do I still enjoy the solo mode, and I still think the way that they implement the uh end game scoring is pretty cool.
- 9:41SPEAKER_01: So I'm gonna keep this one around for a while.
- 9:43SPEAKER_01: And as you briefed previously, like those small boxes, are they really worth getting rid of?
- 9:47SPEAKER_01: No thing takes up no space at all.
- 9:48SPEAKER_01: I could put that thing on pocket, so yeah, that'll stick around for a while.
- 9:53SPEAKER_00: Yeah, well, the the next one we we shook it up a little bit from from the Thinky uh Reforest, and we played some tiny freaking mountain goats, yeah, which was so much fun.
- 10:08SPEAKER_00: I mountain goats is uh I talked about it on last week's podcast um with Tim.
- 10:14SPEAKER_00: Thanks again, Tim, for coming.
- 10:16SPEAKER_00: Um but playing Mountain Goats Legacy, but tiny mountain goats is just mountain goats, but teeny tiny, little small box, and I was so charmed by the fact that they they did that, and it just do you need it?
- 10:32SPEAKER_00: Probably not, but I want it, I'm gonna have it.
- 10:34SPEAKER_00: I'll probably buy three.
- 10:37SPEAKER_01: Yeah, uh, it is more mountain goats and it is tiny, and that's about all you can say.
- 10:43SPEAKER_01: If you played mountain goats before, you like that press your luck, that kind of race to the top of the mountain, that little bit of take that as you kick the people off right as they get there.
- 10:53SPEAKER_01: Um yeah, it's a classic for a reason, sticks around for a reason.
- 10:57SPEAKER_01: They shrunk it down for a reason.
- 10:58SPEAKER_01: It's tiny mountain goats.
- 11:00SPEAKER_00: Heck yeah, enough said about that.
- 11:02SPEAKER_00: We we went back to back on that one.
- 11:04SPEAKER_00: We played that one twice in a row.
- 11:05SPEAKER_00: Sure did.
- 11:06SPEAKER_00: That's how you know it's a banger.
- 11:08SPEAKER_01: Oh, yeah, and great at two.
- 11:10SPEAKER_01: It works, it works perfectly well at two.
- 11:13SPEAKER_00: It sure does.
- 11:14SPEAKER_00: What'd we play after that?
- 11:15SPEAKER_00: I think we went into pet quartet.
- 11:19SPEAKER_01: We did, I forgot about that one.
- 11:20SPEAKER_00: Yes, which I was a little hesitant.
- 11:23SPEAKER_00: This is a new in the new game head wave, pet quartet, which is like the uh spin on Coloretto, I guess.
- 11:31SPEAKER_00: Uh Paul did some work with the designers uh to bring that to life.
- 11:36SPEAKER_00: But essentially, this game is so mathematically cool to me.
- 11:41SPEAKER_00: Uh, the way that in normal Coloretto, you just want to you want to collect cards, and more is always better.
- 11:49SPEAKER_00: So if I have reds, blues, and greens, I want to get as many reds, blues, and greens as possible.
- 11:55SPEAKER_00: But if I get a fourth color, now those are going to be worth negative points.
- 11:59SPEAKER_00: If I get a fifth color, that's even more negative points.
- 12:02SPEAKER_00: So you want to get as many as you can as of a certain color.
- 12:06SPEAKER_00: And the way it works is you have these like a certain amount of lots in the middle, one for each player.
- 12:12SPEAKER_00: And on your turn, you can draw a card and add it to one of the lots, and that's it.
- 12:18SPEAKER_00: Or you can take one of them.
- 12:20SPEAKER_00: So usually these lots can hold, you know, four cards or whatever.
- 12:24SPEAKER_00: So you're just kind of building up these lots.
- 12:26SPEAKER_00: I put a green card here, I put a red card here.
- 12:29SPEAKER_00: Oh wow, this one's kind of looking good for me.
- 12:32SPEAKER_00: It's got red and blue.
- 12:33SPEAKER_00: I want red and blue, but do I wait?
- 12:35SPEAKER_00: Because maybe I can get another blue in that and it's gonna be even better.
- 12:38SPEAKER_00: Oh, but if I take it now, you but then it goes to Travis.
- 12:42SPEAKER_00: Travis draws a card and it's a purple, and he puts it in that one that I was looking at.
- 12:46SPEAKER_00: Now I have a tough decision because he's gone, went, and soured my pot.
- 12:51SPEAKER_00: So that's like normal Coloretto.
- 12:53SPEAKER_00: Um, but the scoring twist on pet quartet is that you score soloists or you score a quartet.
- 13:03SPEAKER_00: So it's a what what type of deck is it called, Travis?
- 13:06SPEAKER_01: Pyramid deck or a flip seven deck.
- 13:08SPEAKER_00: Yes, a pyramid deck.
- 13:10SPEAKER_00: Three threes, four fours, five fives, you get the point.
- 13:13SPEAKER_00: Um, and the goal is to either have one, five, or four fives.
- 13:20SPEAKER_00: If you have one five or four fives, you score a point.
- 13:23SPEAKER_00: If you have two fives, nothing.
- 13:25SPEAKER_00: If you have five fives, nothing.
- 13:27SPEAKER_00: So you're trying to balance this.
- 13:29SPEAKER_00: It's almost feels more push your luck because you know you you can, you know, start getting the uh, you know, you can grab a lot of numbers and you're like hoping, you know, maybe I just get one of these, but now you can't grab a lot of stuff because if you get pushed over that that one threshold and now you have two, well, shoot, now I gotta scramble to try and make this a set of four.
- 13:53SPEAKER_00: And it's just so cool.
- 13:54SPEAKER_00: I like that that kind of tension there.
- 13:56SPEAKER_00: What did you think of Pet Quartet?
- 13:58SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I I think that push and pull, that tug of war, especially at two players, was really neat and well balanced.
- 14:05SPEAKER_01: Um, we played it once with the original rules where like there's no special rules for any of the groupings, right?
- 14:11SPEAKER_01: You have the conductor that is just kind of to delineate the three different groupings, two different groupings that we're adding cards to or pulling cards from.
- 14:19SPEAKER_01: So we played that regularly first, and that was great.
- 14:23SPEAKER_01: I thought it was fun.
- 14:24SPEAKER_01: I and then we played with the special rules where um we played like each duet version, which is specifically for two players.
- 14:36SPEAKER_01: You can play the normal way with two players, but this the special way is like you add special rules to each of these conductors, and it really just limits the amount of cards each conductor can hold, and then you have a special third conductor that will take cards out of the deck and kind of keep them as their own.
- 14:55SPEAKER_01: Not going to lose to that conductor at the end, it's just kind of to cull a lot of those cards and complicate the decisions that you make on every single turn.
- 15:04SPEAKER_01: So I thought it was clean both ways.
- 15:06SPEAKER_01: I enjoyed it both ways.
- 15:07SPEAKER_01: I would love to play it again at both ways.
- 15:09SPEAKER_01: Um it feels a lot like Lost Cities, like these classic card games that are so good at two, where you're just like the each decision is excruciating and it's the scoring is tight.
- 15:24SPEAKER_01: I think you blew me out of the water both times that we played it, but I still had a great time.
- 15:28SPEAKER_01: Um, I have not played Colorado in forever, so it was nice to go back to that kind of uh super tight card lane battling, not really lane battling, but card drafting set collection type stuff.
- 15:42SPEAKER_01: So yeah, I I really enjoyed Pet Quartet from Game Head Games.
- 15:46SPEAKER_01: I will definitely be revisiting this one in the future.
- 15:49SPEAKER_00: I have since played Pet Quartet multiple more times, and let me tell you something.
- 15:55SPEAKER_00: You're in for a treat because it is even better.
- 15:59SPEAKER_00: I don't know why this isn't the normal scoring rule, because it makes the math so much more interesting.
- 16:05SPEAKER_00: But the advanced scoring rule says that if you have a soloist, you score the face value of the card.
- 16:14SPEAKER_00: So think about this.
- 16:16SPEAKER_00: You get one eleven, that's worth 11 points.
- 16:19SPEAKER_00: But how hard is it to just have one eleven because there's 11 11s in the deck?
- 16:24SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so it makes it feel even more tense to try and you know, maybe try and pick off one of those higher value cards as a soloist and score some big points there.
- 16:35SPEAKER_00: And then if you get a quartet, it's worth four points, no matter what the face value is.
- 16:40SPEAKER_00: But I think that scoring makes it even better.
- 16:42SPEAKER_01: That's way better, yeah.
- 16:43SPEAKER_01: That's and the timing matters too, right?
- 16:46SPEAKER_01: Like you see all these 11s coming out, you're like, maybe I can sneak one in, but if you go too early and try and claim that 11, somebody else can force you to take the 11.
- 16:56SPEAKER_01: And like, oh, I I like that.
- 16:58SPEAKER_01: I think that's a cool cool twist.
- 17:00SPEAKER_01: It is a nice twist.
- 17:02SPEAKER_00: You want to take us into the next one we played with Rachel?
- 17:06SPEAKER_01: I think the next one that we played was Wingspan Pocket.
- 17:10SPEAKER_01: And uh, this was my first time playing at three.
- 17:12SPEAKER_01: Typically, it's just me and my wife playing, and she decided to join us for a game of Wingspan Pocket, and we did a brief rules refresher for her and sat down and went to town with some birds.
- 17:25SPEAKER_01: And this was one of the weirdest games of Wingspan Pocket that I have experienced since.
- 17:30SPEAKER_01: Um, in that you had a bird right off the bat that like was just tucking cards underneath, and you a specific suit of I think it was rats or something like that.
- 17:40SPEAKER_01: Yeah, rats.
- 17:42SPEAKER_01: Specific resources getting tucked underneath this predator bird, which are in-game scoring points.
- 17:48SPEAKER_01: Then you got a card that was like all rats are wilds, and then you got one that said draw a rat every turn or whatever.
- 17:55SPEAKER_01: So you're drawing wild cards and sticking wild cards underneath that specific bird every single time.
- 18:01SPEAKER_01: And I talked about pacing on this game previously, and people need to push the pace or can push the pace if they feel like people are racking up points.
- 18:10SPEAKER_01: And I looked at the bird that you put out immediately in that second bird, and I went, Oh man, I gotta end this game real fast.
- 18:18SPEAKER_01: And I was just like frantically trying to put down these birds before you racked up enough points.
- 18:23SPEAKER_01: I get halfway through my flock and I go, maybe I can be competitive.
- 18:28SPEAKER_01: I can get a couple of these five-point birds out there.
- 18:31SPEAKER_01: So let me save up these resources and get them out there.
- 18:34SPEAKER_01: And then I was just like way too slow to the draw.
- 18:37SPEAKER_01: Like, I should have just been throwing down birds left and right as fast as possible, but I had a bunch that were like worth zero points.
- 18:45SPEAKER_01: And even if I had a which I did, I had a card that was like drawing two birds every single turn.
- 18:53SPEAKER_01: I just had a flock underneath my flock, and I could not find the right birds to put down to make me competitive points-wise against you tucking two points underneath a card every single time, and so yeah, that was that is like we got halfway through that game, and I was like, this is what I'm talking about.
- 19:11SPEAKER_01: What I'm talking about, people pushing the pace of this game and changing other people's decisions because you you were driving points.
- 19:18SPEAKER_01: I was trying to drive the timeline of the game.
- 19:20SPEAKER_01: Rachel was doing something else.
- 19:24SPEAKER_01: Yeah, she was creating her flock, and uh I thought didn't you beat me by like three points on this one?
- 19:32SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I think you put me out of water.
- 19:34SPEAKER_00: Um I can't remember, but I do know it was it was wild, and I had a I had a combo engine that I've never created in my life before.
- 19:45SPEAKER_00: I couldn't believe it when it all came together like that.
- 19:48SPEAKER_00: But on the flip side, I looked over at you and you like you you literally had in your supply like 10 birds that you could have played.
- 19:56SPEAKER_00: At least, yeah, and I was like, what are you doing over there?
- 19:59SPEAKER_00: But it was over in 30 minutes or less, and it was uh it was another great testament to that just being the wingspan game.
- 20:10SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I do you think they're gonna do like pocket versions of the other ones?
- 20:15SPEAKER_00: I think I saw Mike.
- 20:17SPEAKER_00: Mike uh might have said something to us in the Discord that they they already announced pocket worm span.
- 20:23SPEAKER_00: Ooh, sign me up, yeah, sign me up.
- 20:27SPEAKER_01: Day one.
- 20:28SPEAKER_01: Um, yeah, that's awesome.
- 20:30SPEAKER_01: That'll be great.
- 20:31SPEAKER_01: Especially if they can streamline some of those Mike Crunchier mechanics within worm span, that would be awesome.
- 20:37SPEAKER_00: Yeah, absolutely.
- 20:39SPEAKER_00: Okay, well, that was that was uh day one, right?
- 20:43SPEAKER_00: That was day one.
- 20:45SPEAKER_00: All right, day two.
- 20:46SPEAKER_00: I'll I'll just give a shout out here.
- 20:48SPEAKER_00: Um, because I was over, I stayed at the Spanglers house.
- 20:54SPEAKER_00: Shout out to Spanglers, uh, some other Colorado Springs friends that used to be part of my regular gaming committee.
- 21:02SPEAKER_00: Um, they got a I don't know what's Jordan, four maybe.
- 21:06SPEAKER_00: Yeah, probably somewhere like that.
- 21:07SPEAKER_00: He's four.
- 21:08SPEAKER_00: He learned to poop on the potty.
- 21:10SPEAKER_00: This is this has been a TMI, but it goes way back.
- 21:16SPEAKER_00: I may have wished ill upon him at one point and said, I hope he never poops in the toilet.
- 21:21SPEAKER_00: And it did take a really long time.
- 21:24SPEAKER_00: Uh, so this was momentous, and his parents kind of held it against me because I did proclaim this very loudly when he was like one and a half or two.
- 21:33SPEAKER_00: I said, I hope that kid never craps in the toilet.
- 21:35SPEAKER_00: I hereby denounce him.
- 21:37SPEAKER_00: Um, and anyway, that's neither here nor there.
- 21:40SPEAKER_00: He pooped on the toilet.
- 21:42SPEAKER_00: I got him a push present.
- 21:44SPEAKER_00: Um, I got I got him animal upon animal, a HABA game.
- 21:51SPEAKER_00: So that morning I played Animal Upon Animal with Jordan, and it was a lot of fun.
- 21:56SPEAKER_00: I'd like to play that with adults.
- 21:58SPEAKER_00: Have you ever played Animal Upon Animal?
- 22:00SPEAKER_00: I have not.
- 22:00SPEAKER_00: It's just a Haba game where you're like stacking these animals on top of an alligator.
- 22:05SPEAKER_00: It's just a fun little dexterity game.
- 22:07SPEAKER_00: You roll a die, it tells you how many animals you have to stack.
- 22:10SPEAKER_00: You're trying to get rid of all your animals first.
- 22:12SPEAKER_00: If it falls, you have to take some back.
- 22:14SPEAKER_00: But yeah, super quick game.
- 22:16SPEAKER_00: I I play this anytime.
- 22:17SPEAKER_00: But yeah.
- 22:19SPEAKER_01: Get a push present.
- 22:20SPEAKER_01: I love it.
- 22:23SPEAKER_00: Um, but you know, after after getting that out of the way, we had a reunion of sorts of all of my good friends in the Colorado Springs area.
- 22:35SPEAKER_00: We had the Olives, we had the Spanglers and the Smiths and all their kids, and we all got together with the intention of playing some games.
- 22:43SPEAKER_00: And by gosh darn it, we did play some games, didn't we, Travis?
- 22:47SPEAKER_01: We did.
- 22:48SPEAKER_01: We got some games played, and we even had time for socializing.
- 22:51SPEAKER_01: We had some time for eating a ridiculous amount of chicken wings, like we made time for it all.
- 22:57SPEAKER_01: We cracked, we did like a crash course of game night, all in like a matter of three hours, maybe four.
- 23:05SPEAKER_01: And uh we got it done.
- 23:06SPEAKER_01: It was well done.
- 23:08SPEAKER_01: We yeah, I think it was very well executed and very well streamlined.
- 23:11SPEAKER_01: Yeah, we had the warm-up game, we had the food, we got a little heavier, and then like ended the night with a party game.
- 23:17SPEAKER_01: Like recipe for success.
- 23:20SPEAKER_00: Yeah, let's get into the deets, Travis.
- 23:22SPEAKER_01: Let's do it.
- 23:23SPEAKER_01: We started before the food arrived with flip seven.
- 23:29SPEAKER_01: And flip seven, I've I don't know if I've ever like played with a group where I didn't have to teach the rules of flip seven, and it was great to be in the warm embrace of a game group that didn't need to be instructed any rules, and you just pulled up the deck and you said flip seven, and everyone said bet, and then you just started dealing, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom.
- 23:50SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and uh that game is great, it's so good.
- 23:53SPEAKER_01: And we flew through it, and you were dealing quick, people were making quick decisions, and the game was moving, and I don't even remember who won, but it was great to like catch up and play a game at the same time, so fast, so cozy.
- 24:10SPEAKER_01: Flip seven.
- 24:11SPEAKER_00: Well, we have like eight people playing that game.
- 24:13SPEAKER_01: It was a lot, it was yeah, it was probably it was probably six or seven, yeah.
- 24:18SPEAKER_00: I mean, this game is net I the flip seven seriously just hit that that sweet spot that you just like it's so simple and it's so stupid that you're like, how is this doesn't doesn't this exist?
- 24:34SPEAKER_00: But now that it does, it's not going anywhere.
- 24:36SPEAKER_00: There's only going to be more flip seven in the world, and I hope this is the it this replaces Uno for families.
- 24:43SPEAKER_00: Like, I mean, you know, I can see this being like Uno big, maybe someday.
- 24:48SPEAKER_00: Sure.
- 24:48SPEAKER_00: It's that it's that good, and it always is well received.
- 24:52SPEAKER_01: Oh yeah.
- 24:54SPEAKER_01: Um, and even with like we had some children interruptions and stuff like that, like it still kept moving, and we flew through it just in time for food to arrive.
- 25:03SPEAKER_01: Ate some wings, and then what did we play after we ate?
- 25:09SPEAKER_00: D N U P.
- 25:10SPEAKER_01: That's right.
- 25:11SPEAKER_01: We played some down up, some done up.
- 25:14SPEAKER_01: What do you think of done up?
- 25:16SPEAKER_00: I was I was asked you first.
- 25:17SPEAKER_00: What do you think of it?
- 25:19SPEAKER_01: You got it just out in time.
- 25:20SPEAKER_01: Um I still love this game, I think it's so good.
- 25:24SPEAKER_01: I know that it's not for everyone, but in terms of teaching card shedding games to others, this game is real streamlined and people pick it up quickly.
- 25:35SPEAKER_01: Uh, we got hung up.
- 25:37SPEAKER_01: I think it was probably a poor teach on my part, um, that I was not like explaining all the capabilities because we started the game, we dealt, everybody picked up their cards, and we were maybe halfway through the first like roundabout of playing cards before it was like, oh, wait, you can also do this, oh, and also this, and so bad teach on my part, but we got it going and it dragged a little bit for whatever reason.
- 26:06SPEAKER_01: I feel like it dragged right at the very end.
- 26:08SPEAKER_01: Um, but we finished it, and down up is still so clean and so great.
- 26:13SPEAKER_01: And yeah, I just I just love that decision.
- 26:17SPEAKER_01: Like it's just a such a simple decision that you make every time, and you feel like you're contributing to your success every single time it is your turn, whether or not you are making big waves or big splashy hands that you're throwing down.
- 26:32SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I don't know what it was, but it did feel like it felt like there there was that like rules hang up that they didn't pick it up quite as quickly as I have seen in previous groups.
- 26:43SPEAKER_00: And it could have been, you know, there were kids around, there was food, like there was a lot of people, there was comings and goings, and um that you know people were leaving their hands and then uh me stepping in to finish playing.
- 26:58SPEAKER_00: It happens, you know.
- 26:59SPEAKER_00: That's that's gaming with a a kid group.
- 27:02SPEAKER_00: But yeah, it after it got into it and we got past some of that.
- 27:06SPEAKER_00: I think it did it did run smoothly.
- 27:08SPEAKER_00: And I did hear I caught Tyler in the kitchen saying to Brina, because she wasn't there for that game, she had gotten the chicken wings, yeah.
- 27:16SPEAKER_00: She went to go pick up food.
- 27:18SPEAKER_00: Um, and he was like, We should get that game.
- 27:20SPEAKER_00: That's pretty good.
- 27:22SPEAKER_01: I like that.
- 27:23SPEAKER_01: That's what I like to hear.
- 27:24SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 27:25SPEAKER_01: I I've this is like the second time I've taught it to people.
- 27:29SPEAKER_01: I try and do my best each time.
- 27:30SPEAKER_01: I feel like every time you do a teach of that game, people go, Wait, what?
- 27:36SPEAKER_01: Because it's not a typical card game that you would have.
- 27:39SPEAKER_01: It's not like spades or euchre, like one of these relatable games.
- 27:44SPEAKER_01: It it doesn't really have much of a parallel anywhere else in terms of mechanics, unless you're like deep into the hobby and you've played some of these other more obscure games where you're flipping cards and like like most casual people have not played many rounds of Scout for as prolific as Scout is.
- 28:04SPEAKER_01: Uh people have not played that.
- 28:06SPEAKER_01: But I feel like that's maybe one of the closer uh iterations, I guess, between down up and scout.
- 28:16SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I think Linko is pretty yeah, yeah.
- 28:18SPEAKER_00: Linko is pretty on the nose too with it, but that's not one that a lot of people have have played.
- 28:24SPEAKER_00: But yeah, down up.
- 28:26SPEAKER_00: Uh I am heading to California tomorrow, and guess what's going in my bag?
- 28:32SPEAKER_00: Down up.
- 28:33SPEAKER_00: You're right, yeah.
- 28:35SPEAKER_00: Um, so the next thing we did was kind of wild, and this this this uh this had me scared.
- 28:45SPEAKER_00: Travis pulled out a box totally human.
- 28:49SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I a game I've never played, I know he never played it, and I was like, Oh, this is gonna go, this might go over like a lead balloon, and I'm watching him pull out all these pieces, and it it looked it's a pretty big setup at first, and like you know, we got a crowd of people that's a little distracted, and Travis is diligently putting all this stuff out, and I was just like, Oh my god, I hope this I hope this goes well because it people's eyes were kind of looking like what is about to happen right now.
- 29:21SPEAKER_00: We're about to sit down for a game of Battlestar Galactica, and but I am happy to report that that was that was my highlight of the night.
- 29:32SPEAKER_01: That was yeah, uh totally human.
- 29:35SPEAKER_01: Uh came in the shipment with gold country, and I didn't know much about it, but if it's packaged with gold country, it can't be it can't be bad.
- 29:45SPEAKER_01: So I gave it a shot.
- 29:47SPEAKER_01: And um the premise is it's a it's a hidden role game where you have a certain number of humans, and maybe there's an alien or two.
- 29:58SPEAKER_01: Um the the roles deck is shuffled up, you deal eat three each player three cards that have a secret role on them.
- 30:06SPEAKER_01: And if any of those three cards that the player receives has an alien on it, they are designated an alien.
- 30:12SPEAKER_01: Everyone else is humans if you don't have an alien card.
- 30:15SPEAKER_01: And what you're doing is you're playing through three rounds, you have three four standees, um, and you're playing through three rounds where you are trying to negotiate um an answer that best fits like the most dangerous encounter, and the you'll flip like a an adjective card and a noun card, so it will be like the creepy vampire, the sturdy robot, the ugly dolphin.
- 30:50SPEAKER_01: I I don't know.
- 30:51SPEAKER_01: There's a bunch of like categories, and the humans can put their cards anywhere that they want to, um, but the aliens are limited to three numbers that they were dealt with their identity cards, and so they have to try and fit answers, like they'll put a sandee on the ugly dolphin or whatever it is, and people are like, that's not the scariest to encounter.
- 31:16SPEAKER_01: You're obviously an alien that's was told that you have to put it there, and then they have to try and explain their way around it so that people believe like that is one of the scariest encounters is the ugly dolphin.
- 31:28SPEAKER_01: Why would you not think an ugly dolphin is scary?
- 31:30SPEAKER_01: That exists with us here on Earth, and so they have to try and kind of lie their way out of it, like, oh, I of course that's the right answer.
- 31:40SPEAKER_01: After you do that three times, it's now time to board a rocket ship, and there's maybe six rocket ships out there, and so the humans are trying to get all the humans away without another alien on their ship.
- 31:57SPEAKER_01: The aliens are trying to board the rocket ship with the most number of humans, and so if you if all the humans get away with on it without an alien on the ship, they all win.
- 32:09SPEAKER_01: Um, and whoever has the largest rocket ship wins, super wins, right?
- 32:15SPEAKER_01: Um, the alien, if they get any alien on board, the ship with the most amount of humans, they win.
- 32:21SPEAKER_01: And so the twist there is if I'm the first one to put my standee out and I go, I'm gonna get on this rocket ship.
- 32:29SPEAKER_01: Other people have to request my permission to get on my same rocket ship.
- 32:33SPEAKER_01: Once we feel like we have a good crew on board, we all say blast off, and we hit this little button that's on a card in front of us.
- 32:39SPEAKER_01: And then we after everyone blasts off and chooses their rocket, everyone flips over and uh you have a discussion about oh my god, you were an alien.
- 32:48SPEAKER_01: And yeah, I that is probably a terrible rundown of the rules, but like this game was fun, it was great, and it was fun to like out as you're choosing rocket ships, everyone's peering.
- 32:59SPEAKER_01: Like, what did you choose again?
- 33:01SPEAKER_01: Why is that one?
- 33:02SPEAKER_01: That that answer seems weird to me.
- 33:04SPEAKER_01: Why would you pick SpongeBob or you know, whatever it is?
- 33:09SPEAKER_01: And that discussion is really fun before you finally choose a rocket.
- 33:13SPEAKER_01: Tell me your impressions of Totally Human Clay.
- 33:15SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I mean, I gave it away up front saying it was the highlight of my the night, but maybe it was just because it was the biggest surprise because it it looked like it was gonna be a lot more than it was.
- 33:26SPEAKER_00: Um, at the end of the day, it was a pretty simple game, and and everybody really got into it and had a good time.
- 33:34SPEAKER_00: And I did notice that the first round we played, it was like so ungodly obvious who the aliens were, just based on the way the the questions came out.
- 33:46SPEAKER_00: Like there were some answers on the that like some choices that were just like so glaringly obvious that they were the the right answer if you were a human, and like everybody else put their you know card down for that answer, and this one person like picks like Barbie on on a play date or something, and you're like, What?
- 34:07SPEAKER_00: What's that about?
- 34:08SPEAKER_00: Um, but then the second round we played of it, it was like a lot more nuanced, and there were you know several people who weren't clumped in with the the majority of the group, so it was a little harder to see who the alien might be.
- 34:21SPEAKER_00: And I think that's just gonna happen in this type of game, and it's over in all of 15 minutes, like you can do those you know, those rounds and the rocket ship boarding pretty quickly.
- 34:32SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and like you said, the discussion's hilarious.
- 34:34SPEAKER_00: People trying to ask you to get on your ship, and you're like, no, no, I I can't I can't have you on my ship, I don't trust you, and even worse, I let Carlin on my ship, and then she revealed herself to be an alien.
- 34:48SPEAKER_00: I and she gave the most convincing answer to why she thought something was disgusting or whatever it was.
- 34:54SPEAKER_00: And I was like, Yeah, that makes sense.
- 34:56SPEAKER_00: I you know, come on, you can hop on.
- 34:58SPEAKER_00: This isn't this a human ship, let's go.
- 35:00SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and then she reveals it.
- 35:02SPEAKER_00: But yeah, this was this was a great little like hidden traitor game that just anybody can get into.
- 35:09SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and I think that first experience, that first round experience is going to be the case for most everyone.
- 35:15SPEAKER_01: Like the aliens aren't gonna know how to lie, they're not gonna know how to frame their answers or when to choose certain answers of the others because they're limited to three choices between the three rounds, and they have to be able to justify those answers based on the cards that they were given on their um identity cards, and so like their their decisions are limited, but their way that they can negotiate around them is unlimited.
- 35:40SPEAKER_01: And I think that first round is always gonna have that round of growth where they're like, I can't justify this, and they they kind of hem and ha about it.
- 35:47SPEAKER_01: But then that second round, people are gonna be like, turn their brains on a little bit and start thinking about like, how can I negotiate this choice and and start leaning forward and leaning into that secret role.
- 35:58SPEAKER_01: So I was surprised by it.
- 36:00SPEAKER_01: I think I really like this game.
- 36:02SPEAKER_01: I think it's gonna replace some of the uh hidden rule games that I have on the shelf right now.
- 36:07SPEAKER_01: So totally human.
- 36:09SPEAKER_01: What a hit!
- 36:10SPEAKER_00: What a hit.
- 36:10SPEAKER_00: I and just the dichotomy between the look of fear on everyone's face.
- 36:16SPEAKER_00: Because every everybody thought it was gonna be a bigger game.
- 36:18SPEAKER_00: It just looked it's in a bigger box, there's a lot of pieces.
- 36:22SPEAKER_00: Like it's it's a lot for for what we just described, like production-wise, it's nice, like the production's great, but it is it can't it's in a bigger box for like a game like this.
- 36:32SPEAKER_00: Like when you're thinking about just a quick party game, it's definitely in a bigger box.
- 36:36SPEAKER_00: And um, but yeah, to see people turn from like looking scared to being like, oh, this is actually really fun and easy, uh, was a lot of fun.
- 36:45SPEAKER_00: Oh, yeah, super rewarding.
- 36:48SPEAKER_00: And then we partied our way right out of the night, and we played a new game from All Play, Jibber Jabble.
- 36:57SPEAKER_00: This is in their tiny box line, and I was excited about this.
- 37:00SPEAKER_00: I listened to the Bites podcast or the Bits podcast with uh Nick from Bytewing and Joe from All Play.
- 37:08SPEAKER_00: And I hear Joe talking about this game all the time.
- 37:12SPEAKER_00: He's like, this is gonna be like one of our best-selling games ever.
- 37:16SPEAKER_00: Like he he he sold me on this game hands down.
- 37:19SPEAKER_00: It doesn't take a lot to sell me on a nine-dollar game.
- 37:21SPEAKER_00: So I got it, and I was excited to play it with this group.
- 37:24SPEAKER_00: Essentially, gibber jabble is kind of like just one in in the way where somebody is the guesser and they pick up a card that has six choices on it, and then the person to their left picks one of those six options that the rest of the people are gonna try and get you to guess.
- 37:44SPEAKER_00: Um, so maybe the word is serial.
- 37:49SPEAKER_00: Now, to get the guesser to guess that word, they have to spell in sequence the clues without talking to each other.
- 37:59SPEAKER_00: So the person to the left of the guesser will start spelling a clue word, like the word with cereal, maybe they say M.
- 38:06SPEAKER_00: And then the next person's like I was thinking, you know, Cocoa Krispies or whatever.
- 38:12SPEAKER_00: What could they be talking about with M?
- 38:14SPEAKER_00: And everybody around the table is like, milk, milk, milk.
- 38:18SPEAKER_00: And the person, the person next to the M is just like trying to come up with what, and then and they say, like, and then they're finding I, and then the next person L, the next person K.
- 38:27SPEAKER_00: And when you think you've spelled the whole word, then the next person in line will say stop, and they start with a new clue.
- 38:33SPEAKER_00: So they'll say like C, and then the next person's like, I have no idea where this is going.
- 38:39SPEAKER_00: And then it's just so funny to see how the words evolve as people go around because some the person who starts it might have had one thing on their mind, and then the person in second takes it a completely different way, and the group kind of has to evolve with that.
- 38:54SPEAKER_00: What do you think of Jibber Jabble?
- 38:56SPEAKER_01: It's like a game of psychic telephone where you don't know the word, but you're trying to pass it along as best you can.
- 39:03SPEAKER_01: And I thought this was great.
- 39:05SPEAKER_01: I thought it was so much fun.
- 39:06SPEAKER_01: At first, you know, you get you hear the premise of it, and you're like, okay, that seems silly.
- 39:11SPEAKER_01: It's about people staring at each other, like trying to spell a word as best of the as best they can, and maybe they're a bad speller, but then you actually sit down and play it, and trying to read people's minds is so much fun, and like yeah, watching things go awry when they either somebody's a bad speller and they throw a random Y in there, or they take it in a completely different direction.
- 39:33SPEAKER_01: And like, where are they going with this?
- 39:35SPEAKER_01: And trying to guess that next step is tons of fun.
- 39:39SPEAKER_01: And like we say, like I've said so many times on this podcast, like the real fun in party games is the discussion that happens afterwards, and this game has that in spades.
- 39:50SPEAKER_01: Like, you'll screw up a clue, somebody will guess wrong, whatever, and then you go, like, well, you were going there.
- 39:56SPEAKER_01: I thought you were doing trying to spell this, and then they took it a completely different direction.
- 40:01SPEAKER_01: That conversation happens every single time.
- 40:03SPEAKER_01: It's great.
- 40:04SPEAKER_01: I and it comes in a nine dollar box.
- 40:06SPEAKER_01: How can you not pick this up?
- 40:07SPEAKER_00: Yeah, this is uh uh come come with you everywhere type game.
- 40:11SPEAKER_00: Oh, yeah.
- 40:11SPEAKER_00: You can literally, I mean, there's rules to how you play it and score points, but literally you you just pull it out, grab a card, and just start playing and you know, play a couple few rounds, play a hundred rounds, however long it stays fun.
- 40:24SPEAKER_00: But it uh I love this.
- 40:26SPEAKER_00: I think this is a pretty clever little party game that doesn't sound like much, like you said, but uh it it it turned out to be a lot of fun.
- 40:34SPEAKER_01: What a fun like pub game! Like go to the pub with your friends, have a beer, play this in the corner.
- 40:40SPEAKER_01: Like this is a great one of those.
- 40:43SPEAKER_00: Look at those nerds in the corner spelling words to each other.
- 40:47SPEAKER_00: It's how you make friends at the pub.
- 40:49SPEAKER_01: Yeah, of course.
- 40:50SPEAKER_01: Go to your local establishment and play jibber jabble.
- 40:56SPEAKER_01: Oh, and that's how we that's how we conclude the night.
- 40:59SPEAKER_01: Uh lent a couple of games out before I left, and we said our goodbyes.
- 41:03SPEAKER_01: And did you play any more games after I left?
- 41:06SPEAKER_01: I did.
- 41:06SPEAKER_00: I played uh you you lent out River Valley Glassworks, sure did.
- 41:11SPEAKER_00: And I knew I knew the Spanglers were gonna love that, and they did.
- 41:17SPEAKER_00: I've am since involved in uh River Valley Glassworks on BGA with them.
- 41:22SPEAKER_00: Nice.
- 41:22SPEAKER_00: Um, so hopefully they've got it played again on the table, but they did very much enjoy uh the gameplay there.
- 41:30SPEAKER_00: That's a great one.
- 41:31SPEAKER_01: And they didn't even invite me to a game that I lent them.
- 41:34SPEAKER_01: I know that's wow, that's outrageous.
- 41:37SPEAKER_01: The disrespect.
- 41:38SPEAKER_01: Disrespect.
- 41:39SPEAKER_00: You need to call them out on that.
- 41:42SPEAKER_01: I will.
- 41:43SPEAKER_01: I I will.
- 41:44SPEAKER_01: I am right now on this podcast for the world to hear.
- 41:47SPEAKER_01: Shame on you, spanglers.
- 41:49SPEAKER_00: Tyler Brennan, you hear that?
- 41:52SPEAKER_00: Text me if text me if you heard this.
- 41:54SPEAKER_01: That's right.
- 41:55SPEAKER_01: Uh okay, that that was the final night of game weekend.
- 42:00SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 42:01SPEAKER_01: And I loved it.
- 42:02SPEAKER_01: I yeah, I loved it too.
- 42:04SPEAKER_01: It was great.
- 42:04SPEAKER_01: And I think it was like the right level of weight for the catch-up games.
- 42:09SPEAKER_01: Like we played games that you could talk during, games that you could converse during and catch up.
- 42:15SPEAKER_01: And if it was you, me and Jared getting together, we might have thrown something on a little heavier.
- 42:20SPEAKER_01: Uh, no Dune Imperium, no feast for Odin, like none of that stuff.
- 42:25SPEAKER_01: But um yeah, like the perfect weight, the perfect game flow.
- 42:30SPEAKER_01: We executed like reunion game night to a T.
- 42:34SPEAKER_01: It's almost like we do this for a living, yeah.
- 42:36SPEAKER_01: Or a side hobby or whatever you want to call this.
- 42:40SPEAKER_00: As a way to lose money every month, yeah.
- 42:42SPEAKER_00: That's right.
- 42:43SPEAKER_01: That's right.
- 42:43SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 42:44SPEAKER_01: Um, so yeah, I I thought it went well.
- 42:46SPEAKER_01: Um, I can't wait till we all get together again.
- 42:49SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 42:50SPEAKER_00: And uh I you keep keep those guys gaming, all right, Travis?
- 42:54SPEAKER_00: You're you're you're their boots on the ground out there.
- 42:57SPEAKER_00: I know I had I had them pretty wrapped around my finger there for a little while, you know.
- 43:03SPEAKER_00: They they were coming to game nights, they know how to do it.
- 43:06SPEAKER_00: And I since their game nights have plummeted, but they're still playing because I see them on BGA, yeah, getting the castle of Burgundy, hitting the you know, they're they're on there, they're still interested.
- 43:17SPEAKER_00: They just need a Sherpa, they need a guy who can run a game night.
- 43:23SPEAKER_01: I don't know if I'm that guy, but uh, I'll do my best to fill your mighty shoes, your cavernous shoes that you have left behind.
- 43:30SPEAKER_01: I don't know about all that.
- 43:32SPEAKER_01: Awesome.
- 43:34SPEAKER_01: Uh let's go over the fence real quick.
- 43:35SPEAKER_01: You got something that you want to talk about over the fence?
- 43:39SPEAKER_00: Nothing substantial other than the Steelers won.
- 43:43SPEAKER_00: They did last week.
- 43:44SPEAKER_01: Niners are three and oh.
- 43:46SPEAKER_00: Yeah, well, the Steelers aren't three and oh, but the week before they were pitiful and everybody was like, Steelers are toast, it's over, they might as well just uh start bombing already for a draft pick.
- 44:00SPEAKER_00: And then they come back and look like absolute ballers against the Bengals, scoring 30 plus points.
- 44:07SPEAKER_00: They hadn't scored a touchdown in like almost two straight games, and then they're scoring like four or five of them.
- 44:12SPEAKER_00: So they do enough to keep me hanging on.
- 44:15SPEAKER_00: So here we are.
- 44:17SPEAKER_00: An abusive relationship.
- 44:18SPEAKER_00: Here they go.
- 44:19SPEAKER_00: Yep.
