- 0:10Speaker 1: All right, let's welcome in our insider Bob Nightingale. You
- 0:12Speaker 1: can check out his work on USA Today. Let's get
- 0:15Speaker 1: right into it, Bob, Hi, how.
- 0:17Speaker 2: You doing, gat Jason goohead good?
- 0:20Speaker 1: We were just talking about Will Smith being out for
- 0:23Speaker 1: another month. Tell us what you got on that, what
- 0:25Speaker 1: the latest is on that, and how it affects the
- 0:27Speaker 1: Dodgers at this point.
- 0:29Speaker 3: Yes, it's at least another month, and uh, you know,
- 0:32Speaker 3: there's no guarantee they think he'll be back. There's no
- 0:35Speaker 3: guarantee that he will. And if not, you don't want
- 0:37Speaker 3: to trust Dalton Russian with that pitching staff, you know,
- 0:41Speaker 3: the rest their way into the playoffs. So they're gonna
- 0:43Speaker 3: look around a little bit for some insurance, you know,
- 0:46Speaker 3: the name that everybody's kind of looking as Ryan Jeffers
- 0:48Speaker 3: and Mensa twins. I think they'll end up trading him
- 0:52Speaker 3: because they do have some catching depth and uh, you know,
- 0:55Speaker 3: the Yankees and Rays have been all over him. They
- 0:57Speaker 3: were in Chicago at ruth Field this weekend where I was,
- 1:01Speaker 3: and you know, their whole objective or whole purpose wishes
- 1:05Speaker 3: to watch Jeffers. So we'll see what happens. And then
- 1:08Speaker 3: there's some catchers out there. I mean, Goodman is not
- 1:10Speaker 3: going anywhere from Colorado, but there are some catchers out there.
- 1:15Speaker 2: Well, let's talk nets.
- 1:17Speaker 4: Sorry, go ahead, Todd, No.
- 1:18Speaker 5: I was gonna stick in the NLS here real quick.
- 1:21Speaker 5: Padres believed to be selling, buying. I mean, talk to
- 1:26Speaker 5: me a little bit about this. Michael King has been good,
- 1:30Speaker 5: I don't know, lasting runs per game. Talk to me
- 1:32Speaker 5: a little bit. What are the Padres team gonna do?
- 1:35Speaker 5: You know, as we're moving forward.
- 1:37Speaker 3: You know, Kevin mess they don't really know what to do.
- 1:39Speaker 3: They need some starting pitching. I think they're going to
- 1:42Speaker 3: train Mason Miller and then get some starting pitching that
- 1:45Speaker 3: way in some prospects. I don't think they're going to
- 1:48Speaker 3: completely wave the white flag now with that fan base
- 1:51Speaker 3: and not with those huge contracts, but I think, you know,
- 1:54Speaker 3: if you're going to get some pieces, Miller's a guy.
- 1:57Speaker 3: Because you be're not winning games, you're wasting Miller. And
- 2:00Speaker 3: there were a couple of stretches this year already where
- 2:02Speaker 3: he pitched like, you know, once in a week, you
- 2:04Speaker 3: know twice and you know, twelve days, and it's just
- 2:07Speaker 3: a waste of a talent. So he would make the
- 2:09Speaker 3: most sense, and they would get you know, they would
- 2:12Speaker 3: get a ton for him, not what they gave up
- 2:14Speaker 3: to get him, but still a good return. Almost be
- 2:17Speaker 3: like we did with Juan Soto. You know, got Soto
- 2:19Speaker 3: didn't work out, you're able to move them again. At
- 2:22Speaker 3: least got maybe seventy five cents of the dollar.
- 2:25Speaker 6: Well, let's talk Mets. You know, you're talking about the
- 2:28Speaker 6: potential of Francisco Indoor being traded in the winter time.
- 2:33Speaker 6: I was there when they signed him to be the
- 2:34Speaker 6: face of the franchise. Is this a good or bad look?
- 2:37Speaker 6: Whereas it's just kind of a what they need to
- 2:39Speaker 6: do in order to kind of move forward.
- 2:43Speaker 3: I think they got to shake things up anyway. You know,
- 2:45Speaker 3: you're heard whispers last year with the you know, Lindor
- 2:48Speaker 3: and Soto not you know, being best friends, and then
- 2:52Speaker 3: became public and now even Steve Cohen addressed it. So
- 2:56Speaker 3: I'm not saying that's a problem, but they need to
- 2:58Speaker 3: shake that whole thing up. And Bobby dumps some payroll too.
- 3:02Speaker 3: Lindora would make the most sense. He's got a full
- 3:05Speaker 3: note trade clause, but you know he may be like Nemos,
- 3:08Speaker 3: So you know what, let me have a change of
- 3:09Speaker 3: scenery here. I think with the money involved, there's just
- 3:12Speaker 3: too much to get it done now. But during the winter,
- 3:17Speaker 3: you know, you can you can work around that a
- 3:19Speaker 3: lot easier. So I'd be a little surprised at this
- 3:22Speaker 3: point to see him with the Mets come spring training.
- 3:26Speaker 5: I also want to talk with the Mets here a
- 3:28Speaker 5: little bit from a managerial perspective.
- 3:32Speaker 3: Uh.
- 3:33Speaker 5: I know that they haven't really searched much from what
- 3:35Speaker 5: I'm hearing, But do you have a guy or two
- 3:38Speaker 5: in mine who there you know, might be approaching come
- 3:41Speaker 5: off season or maybe sooner than later.
- 3:45Speaker 3: I think you. I think these are John's going to
- 3:46Speaker 3: go to Carlos Beltrn unless something falls apart or he
- 3:49Speaker 3: doesn't want it. I think he could have had it
- 3:51Speaker 3: right now. But you know, he got the Hall of
- 3:53Speaker 3: Fame coming up, you know, in a few days here,
- 3:56Speaker 3: and uh, you don't want to, you know, be away
- 3:58Speaker 3: from the team for three or four days. So I
- 4:00Speaker 3: think he did reach back out to him. Uh, you know,
- 4:04Speaker 3: that was a travesty. They didn't keep him in the
- 4:05Speaker 3: first place when he got the job, so here's a
- 4:08Speaker 3: chance to make amends. I think Chris Woodward's got you
- 4:12Speaker 3: know his name has come up a little bit, you know,
- 4:15Speaker 3: inside the Mets front office. But I think it's gonna
- 4:17Speaker 3: be Belterm's John to lose, all.
- 4:20Speaker 1: Right, Bob, Let's talk to the Atlanta Braves. The Braves
- 4:22Speaker 1: are a little bit pessimistic that Spencer Straido or will
- 4:26Speaker 1: turn this season. He has a pitching student twelfth after
- 4:30Speaker 1: that elbow inflammation, who scheduled for that visit with Doctor
- 4:33Speaker 1: Meister this week, and they need another veteran starter.
- 4:38Speaker 2: At the deadline. What do you see happening with Atlanta.
- 4:40Speaker 3: Bub Yeah, and they got to get another starter. They
- 4:43Speaker 3: really do have a chance to you know, hold onto
- 4:46Speaker 3: that division. Anytime you got you know, appointments for Doctor
- 4:50Speaker 3: Meister not a good sign. You know, it's not gonna say,
- 4:52Speaker 3: oh you're good to go, everything was great. It's usually okay,
- 4:55Speaker 3: you want searcher now, search you later. So yeah, they're, uh,
- 4:59Speaker 3: they're very past to mystic that Strider is going to
- 5:01Speaker 3: return at all. So I think they would have been
- 5:04Speaker 3: all over you know, Sonny Gray and some of these guys,
- 5:08Speaker 3: but now they're not available. So you know, Robbie Ray
- 5:11Speaker 3: is probably you know, on top of that list, if
- 5:15Speaker 3: you know, if the Tigers keep Schoogle. The Tigers keep
- 5:17Speaker 3: Casey Mice, but they got to get a veteran starter
- 5:20Speaker 3: to go with Sale, you know, to give them a
- 5:22Speaker 3: chance to uh, you know, not only you know, win
- 5:24Speaker 3: the division, but go deeper in October.
- 5:28Speaker 6: Now staying in the division with the Phillies, I know,
- 5:30Speaker 6: for a long time, the need for a right handed
- 5:33Speaker 6: hitting outfielder has kind of been the area of the
- 5:35Speaker 6: Phillies can improve on. With the Brad Keller news, do
- 5:38Speaker 6: you think getting a back end bullpen is more important
- 5:41Speaker 6: to see them going out and filling both of those
- 5:45Speaker 6: areas of need.
- 5:47Speaker 3: I think almost just just as important for ser Kevin.
- 5:49Speaker 3: I mean, they got to get the setup guy to
- 5:52Speaker 3: go to Duran or you know what you do offensively,
- 5:56Speaker 3: just run. You know, there's giving me some bats out there.
- 5:58Speaker 3: I don't think you're going to go back, you know,
- 6:00Speaker 3: a Baitter type thing or a Mickey Boniac and bring
- 6:03Speaker 3: that back. You know, if Joe Adele is available from
- 6:07Speaker 3: the Angels, you know, and he maybe, I think John
- 6:09Speaker 3: Mosey and Lack is going to try to job Arden
- 6:12Speaker 3: Reno and hey, let's move along here. Let's move these
- 6:15Speaker 3: guys and completely rebuild the farm system. Adele would be
- 6:19Speaker 3: a perfect fit. They really need to write in him back.
- 6:23Speaker 5: Let's go the Detroit Tigers four and a half out
- 6:26Speaker 5: of the wildcard, six and a half in their division.
- 6:29Speaker 5: There's still a chance. There's still a chance for them.
- 6:31Speaker 5: People always talking about school Bol. He needs to go
- 6:34Speaker 5: get some prospects. I fully believe that they need to
- 6:37Speaker 5: trade this guy sooner than later so they can get back.
- 6:40Speaker 5: I was a big component. I'm not saying he's showing Otani,
- 6:44Speaker 5: but the Angels should have moved him too, so they
- 6:46Speaker 5: can have.
- 6:46Speaker 4: Got a bunch of guys back.
- 6:48Speaker 5: There has been fantastic even though him and Casey Mais
- 6:51Speaker 5: are on the shelf. Talk a little bit about, you know,
- 6:54Speaker 5: the adversity that these teams going through and what you
- 6:56Speaker 5: think is going to happen moving forward with this Tiger
- 6:58Speaker 5: ball club.
- 7:00Speaker 3: I think they keep him tyerly do. I mean they
- 7:04Speaker 3: fought back from the dead, they lost twenty one or
- 7:06Speaker 3: twenty five, and mean, look at Cleveland last year. They
- 7:08Speaker 3: saw what Cleveland did down this wretch and they fell
- 7:11Speaker 3: apart and Cleveland's division and you know, the Tiger's gun
- 7:14Speaker 3: as a wild card team. That pitching is too good.
- 7:17Speaker 3: I mean it's been lights out now since since June
- 7:20Speaker 3: first or so in it. You know, in the playoffs,
- 7:23Speaker 3: you know, the America League is so wide open. There's
- 7:25Speaker 3: no Dodgers, there's no Phillies and all Atlanta. But the
- 7:28Speaker 3: ale is so wide open where they get in. They
- 7:31Speaker 3: got a chance to get to the World Series. You
- 7:33Speaker 3: know once again, Uh, you know we got school ball.
- 7:36Speaker 3: You know in Casey, Miz and Framer Bell. Does you
- 7:40Speaker 3: match up those three? I guess just about anybody the
- 7:42Speaker 3: America League. You know, maybe maybe taking Yankees over their
- 7:46Speaker 3: top three guys, but otherwise, Uncle, with those three, I
- 7:50Speaker 3: just think, Hey, you were invested two and twenty million
- 7:52Speaker 3: bucks into the season, a franchise record. You're gonna just
- 7:56Speaker 3: alienate the fan base if you trade school ball. Your
- 7:59Speaker 3: season tickets going to go down next year. The clubhouse
- 8:02Speaker 3: is going to get demoralized. I think you keep them
- 8:05Speaker 3: a less they just fall apart here in the last
- 8:07Speaker 3: two weeks.

- 9:09Speaker 6: All right, I'm gonna talk White Sox, but I want
- 9:11Speaker 6: to go back to something you said, because Redebtmers has
- 9:13Speaker 6: been connected to potentially go into the White Sox. You
- 9:16Speaker 6: mentioned John Mozaia potentially having ARTI's ear. What makes you
- 9:20Speaker 6: believe that things are gonna be different? With him kind
- 9:23Speaker 6: of running the show. Now, how do you believe he
- 9:25Speaker 6: can get into Arty's ear and maybe go out and
- 9:28Speaker 6: sell some of these guys like uh Soriano or redebtmers
- 9:31Speaker 6: At Joeidell.
- 9:33Speaker 3: Yeah, I just said that's the way John Wizielak, you know,
- 9:36Speaker 3: talk to Molli Jali and says, okay, so it's gonna
- 9:39Speaker 3: be two for one. Let's try to get advance Arty.
- 9:41Speaker 3: It's the way I do it now with Dept. Verson Soreano.
- 9:44Speaker 3: You still got it for two years after this, so
- 9:47Speaker 3: it's give me a high price, dad. Some people think
- 9:50Speaker 3: you might have to pay more for debt meers than
- 9:52Speaker 3: you would you know a scoogal per say, just because
- 9:55Speaker 3: you got him for two and a half months and
- 9:57Speaker 3: not just just half a month, so be interesting. I mean, uh,
- 10:01Speaker 3: really a high price tag. I think the Angels got
- 10:05Speaker 3: to listen to seeing if they can move those guys
- 10:08Speaker 3: and really kind of you know, rebuild an entire farm system.
- 10:12Speaker 3: But I think everybody loves what they see. The debt
- 10:14Speaker 3: Mesu Shirun a little bit more of a crap shoe.
- 10:18Speaker 3: We saw what he did beginning again, you know, dominate anybody,
- 10:21Speaker 3: So uh, but yeah, if they move those two guys,
- 10:24Speaker 3: they're gonna get a ton for them. Is this a
- 10:26Speaker 3: seller's market if you if you want to be bad
- 10:29Speaker 3: in one year, this year, you want to be bad
- 10:31Speaker 3: because everyone's gonna be being a high price to get
- 10:34Speaker 3: your guys.
- 10:35Speaker 5: Chicago White Sox. Nobody saw this coming. This has been
- 10:39Speaker 5: a really good year for them. Can you go on
- 10:42Speaker 5: a little bit about what they're gonna try and do
- 10:44Speaker 5: come trade deadline or are they looking at a particular
- 10:47Speaker 5: person here to try and make this move to contending
- 10:50Speaker 5: this al Central.
- 10:53Speaker 3: Well, they're gonna be aggress but they're not gonna be
- 10:55Speaker 3: stupid about it. I mean, they just got all these
- 10:57Speaker 3: prospects after being so bad these years. You can't just
- 11:00Speaker 3: throw the prospects into a tray and just go for
- 11:03Speaker 3: it and find yourself back in the same situation. So yeah,
- 11:06Speaker 3: I mean they'll look into the dept Mars for sure.
- 11:10Speaker 5: Uh.
- 11:11Speaker 3: They sent a scout already to look at a Clay homes.
- 11:14Speaker 3: He was supposed to pitch Saturday and got rained out
- 11:17Speaker 3: he had a bullpen session. Uh, So they got one
- 11:20Speaker 3: of their top top guys executives to go watch him.
- 11:24Speaker 3: And he's an intriguing guy. I mean, he can still
- 11:26Speaker 3: opt out after the year. He pitched great and so
- 11:29Speaker 3: he broke his leg. He had a good, solid season
- 11:31Speaker 3: last year. They really liked this guy, and they're thinking,
- 11:35Speaker 3: you know, it was surely come cheap than the mercy.
- 11:40Speaker 1: We had the White Sox on Apple TV this week
- 11:41Speaker 1: and they were so much fun to watch, a youthful,
- 11:43Speaker 1: energetic team. So I can only imagine what would happen
- 11:46Speaker 1: if they got somebody like that. All right, let's move
- 11:49Speaker 1: on to the Twins. It was reported that a scout
- 11:52Speaker 1: from the Yankees and the Rays were Rigley over the
- 11:54Speaker 1: weekend to closely watch Ryan Jeffers. Both the Yankees and
- 11:58Speaker 1: the Rays see that as a glaring weakness right now.
- 12:00Speaker 1: They need a catcher. Bob, what do you see happening?
- 12:03Speaker 1: What more can you tell us on that?
- 12:06Speaker 3: I think they move him. He's a free agent. They're
- 12:08Speaker 3: not going to resign him. They haven't really had any talks, uh,
- 12:11Speaker 3: and they got catching depth. Uh. So you know, can
- 12:15Speaker 3: they win the division without him? You know, probably not.
- 12:18Speaker 3: I don't think when the division, you know, with him either.
- 12:21Speaker 3: So the key thing would be, you know, I think
- 12:24Speaker 3: both teams won him is kind of a uh, not
- 12:27Speaker 3: as a regular but almost a tune type of guy,
- 12:31Speaker 3: or a part time role. I'm not sure he'd adjusted
- 12:34Speaker 3: that he'd have to lease d h you know, every
- 12:36Speaker 3: every day when he's not being the full time catcher.
- 12:39Speaker 3: So I think they're gonna have some more teams like
- 12:43Speaker 3: the Dodgers and others joining him. But yeah, just everybody
- 12:46Speaker 3: is looking for a bat these days, and uh, and
- 12:49Speaker 3: he's one of the best out there. The Twins are
- 12:51Speaker 3: going to get a lot for him.
- 12:54Speaker 4: All right.
- 12:55Speaker 6: It is painful for me to say, but the last
- 12:58Speaker 6: place Blue Jays either gonna be sellers or do you
- 13:01Speaker 6: believe there's a potential for them to kind of do
- 13:04Speaker 6: what the Rays had done in the past and maybe
- 13:06Speaker 6: move on from a guy like Gosman who's a you know,
- 13:08Speaker 6: a free agent out of the end of the year,
- 13:10Speaker 6: try to get a big return for him and still compete,
- 13:13Speaker 6: or do you think they just kind of move on.
- 13:15Speaker 6: It's been a disappointing year, to say the least.
- 13:19Speaker 3: I think they're going to have to move on. I
- 13:20Speaker 3: mean it's a bitter disappointment. You know, these you know,
- 13:23Speaker 3: come out of the break all energized and they lose. Uh, yeah,
- 13:26Speaker 3: two three the White Socks. Uh, you know, I think
- 13:30Speaker 3: you know Beeber too. You gotta trade. If you're gonna
- 13:32Speaker 3: trade Gosman, trade Shane Bieber. Then they look at an
- 13:35Speaker 3: offensive side. Uh you know, I think you're gonna have
- 13:39Speaker 3: to move Dalton as well. And uh, let's see and
- 13:42Speaker 3: hear about George Springer. You know, I mean, George is
- 13:45Speaker 3: a d h You're not gonna have as many suitors.
- 13:47Speaker 3: But I think Dald, you know, Marshall, will have a
- 13:51Speaker 3: lot of suitors. So I think these next you know,
- 13:54Speaker 3: ten days are probably as big to them as any
- 13:58Speaker 3: organization in baseball. I mean, to sell off and nobody
- 14:01Speaker 3: saw this coming, but they may have no choice. Just
- 14:04Speaker 3: things have worked out for him.
- 14:07Speaker 5: On to the Yankees second place team game in a
- 14:09Speaker 5: half out, talk about Aaron Judge a little bit. I mean,
- 14:12Speaker 5: we've been hearing about this fractured right rib. It's been
- 14:14Speaker 5: a nuisance. He hasn't had any baseball activities. They're hopeful
- 14:19Speaker 5: but cautiously optimistic about getting him ready to rock.
- 14:23Speaker 4: I think the more time the better.
- 14:25Speaker 5: I think he comes back quicker more than most athletes
- 14:29Speaker 5: when it comes to baseball. He gets in and he
- 14:30Speaker 5: grips it. But what do you think the trade deadline's
- 14:33Speaker 5: gonna look for them? I've been hearing a lot of
- 14:35Speaker 5: different things. We know exactly what they need, bullpen, right
- 14:39Speaker 5: handed catching catcher. Talk to me, what do you think
- 14:42Speaker 5: the biggest need is?
- 14:44Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean they need it, you know, catching up
- 14:46Speaker 3: for sure. They need another arm of the back end
- 14:50Speaker 3: the bullpen. But you know, with Judge and ickeryplays him,
- 14:53Speaker 3: it's impossible. So it's almost like, why try. And they're
- 14:58Speaker 3: a lot more worrying about it. They're letting on. You know,
- 15:01Speaker 3: they're not one hundred percent convinced he's coming back. Uh,
- 15:04Speaker 3: this thing's taken awhile. Now, Uh, theyn't expect him be
- 15:07Speaker 3: fully healed, but I think they expected him to be
- 15:09Speaker 3: a little furlong and you see injury. It is amazing
- 15:12Speaker 3: he played for a month when you know with that
- 15:14Speaker 3: broken rib. So you know, now you're talking about before
- 15:18Speaker 3: it was like, okay, he should be back in August.
- 15:20Speaker 3: Now you're talking about okay, if things go right, you know,
- 15:23Speaker 3: maybe uh you know, you know mid September or so
- 15:26Speaker 3: early September, you're lucky. But uh, they're a little down
- 15:30Speaker 3: on it. Uh, they're trying to put a brave face
- 15:32Speaker 3: up there, but they know that, Hey, if he doesn't
- 15:35Speaker 3: come back, you know they're you know, they're toast for
- 15:37Speaker 3: the playoffs.
- 15:40Speaker 2: All right, let's move on to that l Central.
- 15:41Speaker 1: I want to talk about the Pirates a little bit.
- 15:43Speaker 1: We know how they started the season, right, but we
- 15:45Speaker 1: we know that they plan to be aggressive at the deadline.
- 15:49Speaker 1: But you know, they don't want to increase that payroll,
- 15:51Speaker 1: so their biggest need is the bullpen. We know that,
- 15:54Speaker 1: and we also know that you know they've got a
- 15:57Speaker 1: long playoff drought. So, Bob, what do you see happening
- 16:00Speaker 1: with the Pirates considering they do want to be aggressive
- 16:03Speaker 1: at this point.
- 16:05Speaker 3: Yeah, they're gonna do everything possible. I'm not sure they
- 16:07Speaker 3: can add to the payroll. The one name that's come
- 16:09Speaker 3: up interestingly is O'Neil Cruz. I mean you think that
- 16:13Speaker 3: will he train him? He frees up some money? They
- 16:17Speaker 3: do have outfield debt. Can they trade O'Neil Cruz to
- 16:21Speaker 3: get some bullpen help? And they need bullpen help as
- 16:23Speaker 3: much as any contender out there. You can use nur
- 16:26Speaker 3: starter too, so I think they're listen offers of O'Neil Cruz.
- 16:30Speaker 3: To see if they get the you know, the other pieces,
- 16:33Speaker 3: and they're certainly trying to go for this thing. Haven't
- 16:35Speaker 3: been the playoffs. Is twenty fifteen, second longest round to
- 16:39Speaker 3: the Angels, but he goes fourteen and see what happens.
- 16:44Speaker 3: But yeah, they're gonna be very aggressive, and I think
- 16:47Speaker 3: the mandate from ownership is we want to be in
- 16:50Speaker 3: the playoffs. Do what it takes, but we're not gonna,
- 16:54Speaker 3: you know, jump up that payroll anytime soon, big time.
- 16:57Speaker 3: So O'Neil Cruz would be interesting.
- 17:01Speaker 6: Well, last one for me, what are the Astros gonna
- 17:04Speaker 6: do at the deadline. I know they're four and a
- 17:06Speaker 6: half games out of a wildcard, three and a half
- 17:09Speaker 6: out of their own division.
- 17:12Speaker 2: They have some interesting pieces. Do you do you see
- 17:14Speaker 2: them adding?
- 17:15Speaker 6: Where do you see them selling off some of those
- 17:17Speaker 6: interesting pieces?
- 17:19Speaker 3: I think they add. I think they're gonna, you know,
- 17:21Speaker 3: go for this thing. I mean, hate ta Wasta season
- 17:24Speaker 3: like you're and Alvarez what he's doing. And they've had
- 17:27Speaker 3: so many pitching injuries. I also think that some jobs
- 17:30Speaker 3: on the line depending on it, you know, when they're
- 17:32Speaker 3: Dana Brown the GM, Joe Spatta the manager. I think
- 17:37Speaker 3: they have to make the playoffs to you know, make
- 17:39Speaker 3: sure those guys jobs are safe at least safer you
- 17:43Speaker 3: know that they don't make the playoffs. If they don't
- 17:45Speaker 3: make the playoffs, I think we're gonna see some adduble.
- 17:48Speaker 1: Uh.
- 17:48Speaker 3: And you know Jim Crane has always said, hey, we'll
- 17:50Speaker 3: go all the way to the limit here, We'll go
- 17:53Speaker 3: to the luxury attacks, but we'll never rebuild as long
- 17:56Speaker 3: as I'm the I'm the owner. So I think they're
- 17:59Speaker 3: gonna be out there looking for anybody and everybody. And
- 18:02Speaker 3: then you know, they got two and a half million
- 18:03Speaker 3: dollars back for the Lands of Colors deal, so they
- 18:07Speaker 3: have about a twelve a half million dollars before the
- 18:09Speaker 3: leisure jacks that would take care of getting some big guy.
- 18:13Speaker 3: I mean even even you know, if Sarah Scuble was available,
- 18:17Speaker 3: I think they need write in on him.
- 18:20Speaker 4: Bob.
- 18:20Speaker 1: We always appreciate your time, We appreciate your wisdom. Thank
- 18:23Speaker 1: you so much for all the insider information. We will
- 18:27Speaker 1: be right back here on foul Territory.
- 18:31Speaker 7: If you're watching us, you already know we're wearing mack
- 18:33Speaker 7: Weldon right now as we talk about a great brand
- 18:36Speaker 7: that makes things so comfortable and easy to wear. But
- 18:38Speaker 7: if you're listening to the show, let me tell you
- 18:40Speaker 7: a little bit more about Mac Weldon with my friend
- 18:43Speaker 7: Aer Kratz.
- 18:44Speaker 8: Yeah, it's comfortable, it's light. It's summertime right now. For
- 18:49Speaker 8: me though, they cater to what I need tall clothes. Normally,
- 18:53Speaker 8: when I buy tall clothes it's like something that's cumbersome
- 18:57Speaker 8: and boxy. It still fits in credibly well, super light,
- 19:02Speaker 8: perfect for the summertime. They got me all covered.
- 19:06Speaker 7: Comfortable performance material can be yours. Mack Weldon is the spot.
- 19:12Speaker 7: Don't sweat the heat this summer. Feel as effortlessly cool
- 19:16Speaker 7: as you look. With Mack Weldon. Go to Mackweldon dot

- 19:25Speaker 7: com code foul all right.
- 19:28Speaker 1: Tim Heally, Welcome into fouls territory. Tim Neally, the Red
- 19:31Speaker 1: Sox beat reporter for the Boston Globe, and Tim, we
- 19:35Speaker 1: were talking about the Red Sox at the beginning of
- 19:38Speaker 1: this show. I've got them on Apple TV on Friday.
- 19:41Speaker 1: Totally different than what we saw from them at the
- 19:43Speaker 1: beginning of the season. They're in the midst of their
- 19:45Speaker 1: longest winning streak in seventy eight years.
- 19:48Speaker 3: What's behind it, Tim.
- 19:50Speaker 2: What's behind it is everything. Everything has broken right for
- 19:53Speaker 2: the Red Sox, particularly this month, but really even the
- 19:56Speaker 2: past month entirely. I believe twenty one in five over
- 20:00Speaker 2: the last twenty six games. So the starting pitching, which
- 20:04Speaker 2: has been good all year, has remained excellent. Relief pitching
- 20:07Speaker 2: is right there with it. The problem for basically three
- 20:11Speaker 2: months was that they couldn't score a lot, and now
- 20:14Speaker 2: they're scoring plenty. So they've beaten up on bad teams.
- 20:16Speaker 2: They have swept a couple of good teams, including the
- 20:19Speaker 2: Rais over the weekend, and everything's going right for the
- 20:23Speaker 2: Red Sox right now. It's pretty remarkable considering basically nothing
- 20:27Speaker 2: went right for them for the first half of the season.
- 20:32Speaker 5: I still can't. I'm looking at you and I see
- 20:35Speaker 5: you're in Boston. Now that's just really weird.
- 20:39Speaker 2: But here's I totally get it.
- 20:41Speaker 4: Here's the difference.
- 20:42Speaker 5: I'm saying this because he was with the Mets for
- 20:44Speaker 5: a while and I was with the Mets, and we
- 20:47Speaker 5: used to I used to give him a hard time.
- 20:48Speaker 4: The guy's smiling here.
- 20:49Speaker 5: Every time he's in the Mets clubhouse, he always had
- 20:51Speaker 5: a somber look on his face.
- 20:53Speaker 2: But no good so did you guys a lot of signs.
- 20:58Speaker 5: Hey listen, at the end of the day, we're all
- 21:03Speaker 5: just want to watch him good baseball.
- 21:04Speaker 4: And that's what the Red Socks are doing.
- 21:06Speaker 6: Man.
- 21:07Speaker 5: Not to bring up a somber no Roman Anthony, though,
- 21:09Speaker 5: we got to talk about him a little bit, talk
- 21:11Speaker 5: a little about where he's at. Doesn't seem like he's
- 21:14Speaker 5: close to returning, but you know how things get. The
- 21:17Speaker 5: team starts doing well, all of a sudden, it's like, hey,
- 21:19Speaker 5: I gotta do this, I gotta do that.
- 21:20Speaker 4: Talk a little about him and where you see his progress.
- 21:24Speaker 2: It's a weird situation for Roman Anthony. It has been
- 21:28Speaker 2: eleven weeks now since he partially tore a ligament in
- 21:33Speaker 2: the ring finger on his left hand on a random swing,
- 21:37Speaker 2: and right now he is in an unfortunate holding pat tern.
- 21:42Speaker 2: The Red Sox said yesterday that he will not zoom hitting,
- 21:45Speaker 2: he will not try to hit. We will not try
- 21:47Speaker 2: to start a hitting progression until that hand is pain free,
- 21:52Speaker 2: and he has not reached that threshold yet. So for now,
- 21:56Speaker 2: he's just in Fort Myers at the Red Sox spring
- 21:59Speaker 2: training league facility doing a lot of things, a lot
- 22:03Speaker 2: of defensive drills, fielding, running, keeping his conditioning up. But
- 22:09Speaker 2: if he can't swing, then he's not going to be
- 22:13Speaker 2: of any use to the Red Sox. So they're not
- 22:15Speaker 2: by any means forcing that. Regardless of yes, the Red
- 22:19Speaker 2: Sox are hot right now, they're very much in the
- 22:21Speaker 2: playoff picture. Roman Anthony, though, is stuck in Florida right
- 22:24Speaker 2: now basically, and definitely they have no idea when he's
- 22:27Speaker 2: going to come back.
- 22:28Speaker 6: Tim I saw the Red Sox in person middle of
- 22:31Speaker 6: June covering a Blue Juice game, and they were a
- 22:33Speaker 6: bad team. You know, I don't think anyone saw that.
- 22:38Speaker 6: My question is what happened first? Was there this belief
- 22:41Speaker 6: that they could go on a run like this or
- 22:43Speaker 6: did they start getting did they start winning some games?
- 22:45Speaker 6: And then the belief that they could be better than
- 22:48Speaker 6: they were really started taking over. Because you looked at
- 22:51Speaker 6: that dugout and you looked at the stands that Saturday
- 22:54Speaker 6: game when a Bray You hit that home run, you
- 22:57Speaker 6: felt like they were going to win that game. There
- 22:59Speaker 6: was this league on the dugout there was this belief
- 23:01Speaker 6: in the stands that they were going to come back
- 23:03Speaker 6: and win the game.
- 23:05Speaker 2: Yes, I there was always some belief, but man, as
- 23:09Speaker 2: you get into mid June there and then they lost
- 23:11Speaker 2: two out of three and pretty heartbreaking fashion to the
- 23:15Speaker 2: Rockies in Denver, it felt like the bottom and it
- 23:18Speaker 2: felt it felt pretty much over, and some of the guys,
- 23:22Speaker 2: a lot of the guys seemed resigned to that. The
- 23:26Speaker 2: front office was not waving the white flag on selling
- 23:29Speaker 2: leading up to the trade headline, but they were talking
- 23:32Speaker 2: in terms that made it sound awfully close. And then
- 23:35Speaker 2: pretty much out of nowhere, they came back from Denver
- 23:39Speaker 2: and they swept the Yankees four games. Took four out
- 23:42Speaker 2: of four, and it wasn't close. They beat up on
- 23:44Speaker 2: Cam Schlittler, who had always had their number in prior outings,
- 23:48Speaker 2: and it just built from there.
- 23:50Speaker 4: They had.
- 23:52Speaker 2: You know, once you take four at a four from
- 23:54Speaker 2: the Yankees, then the belief that existed a little bit
- 23:58Speaker 2: you start to see the actual result. And then once
- 24:00Speaker 2: you start to see the actual result, it's easier to
- 24:02Speaker 2: believe more. And it's just this vicious cycle in the
- 24:06Speaker 2: best way. And then they go on the road and
- 24:09Speaker 2: they had a really tough road trip going into the
- 24:10Speaker 2: break Anaheim Chicago, New York, and they were really close
- 24:16Speaker 2: to losing the last game against the Mets on basically
- 24:23Speaker 2: a dot of a game. They went into the ninth thinning,
- 24:24Speaker 2: they were down by two. They had two hits the
- 24:26Speaker 2: whole night. They were gonna go into the All Star
- 24:27Speaker 2: Break on a high but with a kind of a
- 24:30Speaker 2: crappy loss. And then there's an error and then here
- 24:33Speaker 2: come the Red Sox that we're gonna if you crack
- 24:35Speaker 2: the door open, they're gonna kick it open. So everything's
- 24:38Speaker 2: going for the Red Sox, including the other team not really
- 24:40Speaker 2: playing well. The Rays over the weekend looked horrible, like
- 24:43Speaker 2: they didn't pitch well, they didn't feel well, terrible with
- 24:46Speaker 2: runners in scoring position, terrible at abs. So it's a
- 24:49Speaker 2: fascinating dynamic. Right now. Are those teams bad or the
- 24:52Speaker 2: Red Sox just so hot and good right now that
- 24:54Speaker 2: they're making these teams look bad.
- 24:56Speaker 1: That's a really good question. One of the things that
- 24:57Speaker 1: I want to talk to you about is the fact
- 25:00Speaker 1: that the guy at the helm helping lead them through
- 25:03Speaker 1: this is Chad Tracy, and he was not the manager
- 25:07Speaker 1: at the beginning of the year. We know that, yeah,
- 25:09Speaker 1: And this thirteen game run is the longest winning streak
- 25:13Speaker 1: for a skipper who didn't manage the team on opening
- 25:16Speaker 1: day in thirty five years. And I think it's kind
- 25:19Speaker 1: of remarkable that he's been able to do that in
- 25:21Speaker 1: the midst of I know that they weren't good right
- 25:24Speaker 1: away when he took over, right but what have you
- 25:27Speaker 1: seen from Chad and just what he's been able to
- 25:30Speaker 1: do with this team after going through that transition from
- 25:33Speaker 1: Alex Korra to Chad.
- 25:36Speaker 2: It's been pretty fascinating to watch Chad Tracy, a he
- 25:40Speaker 2: spent twenty years in the minor leagues as a player,
- 25:43Speaker 2: coach and manager, finally get this crack his first time
- 25:46Speaker 2: in the majors and watch him sort of evolve as
- 25:50Speaker 2: the days and weeks go by. After a bunch of
- 25:53Speaker 2: those losses, Chad Tracy took it heart. You could see
- 25:56Speaker 2: it on his face, you could hear in his voice
- 25:58Speaker 2: after games on camera, off camera, it was it's tough, right,
- 26:02Speaker 2: you finally got this chance, and this is how it
- 26:04Speaker 2: was go just with a bad team and then and
- 26:08Speaker 2: then it turned and Chad Tracy, I think deserves a
- 26:11Speaker 2: lot of credit for that, he absolutely is putting himself
- 26:14Speaker 2: in the conversation to have the job on a permanent basis.
- 26:17Speaker 2: Right now, he's just the inter manager. He has that title.
- 26:21Speaker 2: The Red Sox haven't touched it since they made the
- 26:23Speaker 2: change in late April, and the results speak for themselves there.
- 26:28Speaker 2: I want to say, eight or nine games over five
- 26:30Speaker 2: hundred since Chad Tracy took over, So it's been a
- 26:32Speaker 2: it's been a heck of a run for the Chad
- 26:34Speaker 2: Tracy Red Sox and uh, you know, we'll see where
- 26:38Speaker 2: it goes from here. Two weeks to the trade.
- 26:40Speaker 6: Inline, speaking of credit, me and Todd opened the show
- 26:45Speaker 6: talking about the Red Sox and what Contrarast.
- 26:47Speaker 2: Means to this team.
- 26:49Speaker 6: Should he get a lot of credit for what he
- 26:51Speaker 6: did going out charging the mound? Did that kind of
- 26:53Speaker 6: really spark kind of this new identity for this team
- 26:56Speaker 6: that they aren't going to take anything from anyone.
- 26:59Speaker 2: That charging the mound against the Nationals was the most
- 27:03Speaker 2: significant example of what Wilson Contreras has brought the entire season,
- 27:08Speaker 2: which is an edge, and nobody else on this roster
- 27:13Speaker 2: really has that edge on the field. And when they
- 27:16Speaker 2: were going through the early stages of the season and
- 27:20Speaker 2: things weren't going well. The manager gets fired, things still
- 27:23Speaker 2: aren't going well. New coaching staff. Basically half the coaching
- 27:26Speaker 2: staff turned over. Wilson Tourists was there the whole time hitting, Yes,
- 27:31Speaker 2: And the statistical leading is important, but the emotional leading
- 27:36Speaker 2: emerged along the way because they didn't have a lot
- 27:39Speaker 2: of veteran presence. They had Trevor Story. He was the leader,
- 27:41Speaker 2: but he was not doing well and then he went
- 27:44Speaker 2: on the il and had surgery, so he was, you know,
- 27:47Speaker 2: kind of a non factor in terms of the vibes
- 27:49Speaker 2: and atmosphere. And Wilson contreras to the surprises. I think
- 27:53Speaker 2: a lot of people emerged as this statistical and emotional
- 27:57Speaker 2: leader of this team and ready to throw down whenever
- 28:03Speaker 2: somebody else is even a little bit hinting that that
- 28:06Speaker 2: might be the case. So yeah, he deserves a lot
- 28:09Speaker 2: of credit on all of those fronts.
- 28:13Speaker 7: Todd father, are you hitting some games this summer?
- 28:15Speaker 4: What's the deal? Of course? And it's real simple, Scottie Braun.

- 29:14Speaker 5: Red Sox third place in the Wildcard. I think that's unbelievable.
- 29:18Speaker 5: I talked earlier about if you're worrying about your team
- 29:21Speaker 5: and worrying about yourselves, good things usually happen. And when
- 29:25Speaker 5: you're winning, it doesn't matter what anybody else is doing,
- 29:27Speaker 5: because you're going to find a way to leap frog
- 29:29Speaker 5: over somebody. My question to you is, come trade deadline.
- 29:34Speaker 5: Are they going to be getting some Are they going
- 29:37Speaker 5: to be buy or set?
- 29:37Speaker 4: Like?
- 29:38Speaker 5: What do you see these guys? I know they're going
- 29:40Speaker 5: to go out there and try and get some guys.
- 29:41Speaker 5: What I meant to say is who do they need?
- 29:44Speaker 5: Like what is their biggest concern?
- 29:46Speaker 2: That's a great question. They need a bat most significantly.
- 29:50Speaker 2: And what's interesting and a little weird about the roster
- 29:54Speaker 2: as it exists right now is there are a bunch
- 29:56Speaker 2: of positions on the field where that offensive upgrade could come.
- 30:01Speaker 2: Left field, Jared Durant is not having a good time
- 30:03Speaker 2: right now and has basically been a platoon player the
- 30:06Speaker 2: past few weeks. Second base Anthony Siegler has been scorching,
- 30:10Speaker 2: holding it down in the absence of Marcelo Meyer and
- 30:14Speaker 2: Isaiah Connor Fileffa. He's been great. Two weeks from now,
- 30:17Speaker 2: we'll see where a second base is at, both in
- 30:20Speaker 2: terms of Siegler's production and the health of those other guys.
- 30:23Speaker 2: Short stopped was Trevor's story. He's also working his way
- 30:26Speaker 2: back and right now they've got a platoon of Chang
- 30:28Speaker 2: and Monasterio and that's been fine. And Trevor Story is
- 30:32Speaker 2: on his way back, but he was terrible when he
- 30:33Speaker 2: was playing, trying to play through injury for the first
- 30:36Speaker 2: month and a half of the season. So short stops
- 30:39Speaker 2: up in the air DH has been a missmatch with
- 30:42Speaker 2: Rome Gonzalez, Yoshida some other guys. If you get a
- 30:46Speaker 2: big bat and you put him at DH, there is
- 30:48Speaker 2: room there. And then catcher where they haven't gotten a
- 30:50Speaker 2: ton offensively, particularly from Carlos Narvaez. Very difficult, as you
- 30:56Speaker 2: guys know, to add a catcher on the fly in
- 30:58Speaker 2: the middle of the season. But if they can find
- 31:01Speaker 2: somebody they like who's going to upgrade the lineup, then
- 31:03Speaker 2: maybe they go for it. So there are a lot
- 31:05Speaker 2: of spots on the field where they could upgrade offensively.
- 31:09Speaker 6: Well, when you when you talk that way, how how
- 31:12Speaker 6: how are they successful because it feels like it feels
- 31:15Speaker 6: like they need to the position. What's the magic? What's
- 31:18Speaker 6: the magic? It is it, Chad Tracy? Is it this
- 31:21Speaker 6: team coming together? Is it, you know, just playing so
- 31:24Speaker 6: poorly that they're finally starting to play better collectly?
- 31:27Speaker 4: What is it?
- 31:27Speaker 6: Because you know, what you just talked about. It just
- 31:30Speaker 6: doesn't seem like this team is a team that should
- 31:32Speaker 6: win thirteen games in a row.
- 31:34Speaker 2: It's a little bit of that last variable that you
- 31:37Speaker 2: mentioned of they had to play better. They were so
- 31:41Speaker 2: bad for the first half of the season that you
- 31:43Speaker 2: look at the roster and you think, this doesn't really
- 31:45Speaker 2: make any sense. They should be a little better unless sure,
- 31:48Speaker 2: they're a great team, but there's more in there. So
- 31:51Speaker 2: that has happened, and then along the way Caleb Durbin
- 31:55Speaker 2: turned it around after being bad for a few months. Siegler,
- 31:58Speaker 2: as I said, has been no small thing.
- 32:00Speaker 4: He is the.
- 32:01Speaker 2: Everyday second baseman and leadolf hitter, back to switch hitting,
- 32:06Speaker 2: which he had abandoned for a time, all after being
- 32:09Speaker 2: basically a throw in third piece in the February trade
- 32:12Speaker 2: that sent Kyle Harrison to Milwaukee and brought Caleb Durbin
- 32:15Speaker 2: to Boston. So he's just sort of a forty man
- 32:18Speaker 2: roster depth kind of guy who has emerged for the
- 32:20Speaker 2: past month as critical, which is not something anybody saw coming.
- 32:25Speaker 2: So it's a lot. Basically, everything that could be going
- 32:28Speaker 2: right for the Red Sox is going right, and it's
- 32:30Speaker 2: all coming together in a pretty pretty, uh, you know,
- 32:33Speaker 2: borderline ridiculous three weeks right now?
- 32:36Speaker 1: Okay, So Tim, you want to talk about something going
- 32:38Speaker 1: right for the Red Sox, you got to talk about
- 32:40Speaker 1: Sonny Gray. He's putting together incredible season. Against the Rays
- 32:44Speaker 1: over the weekend, I loved I'm sure you were there
- 32:47Speaker 1: when he said this, but he said he felt a
- 32:48Speaker 1: little rusty, but still put together six innings he held
- 32:52Speaker 1: the Rays to there were eight with runners in scoring position.
- 32:56Speaker 3: I believe against him.
- 32:57Speaker 1: And we know that the Rays have been good this year.
- 32:59Speaker 1: I know you said they didn't look good this weekend,
- 33:01Speaker 1: but for him to do that, what he's done this season,
- 33:04Speaker 1: how key has he been for the Red Sox and
- 33:07Speaker 1: just kind of keeping you know, their hopes alive maybe
- 33:10Speaker 1: in that tough stretch and then now down the stretch
- 33:12Speaker 1: having a guy like him as they're trying to hunt
- 33:15Speaker 1: the East a little bit.
- 33:17Speaker 2: He's been critical and credit to Craig Breslo for getting
- 33:19Speaker 2: Sonny Gray. In November, shortly after Breslo said they wanted
- 33:24Speaker 2: a number two starter to slote in behind Garrett Crochet,
- 33:28Speaker 2: they brought in Sonny Gray. And the reaction from a
- 33:30Speaker 2: lot of people, including me, including I think on this
- 33:33Speaker 2: show was as he a number two starter? Is he
- 33:37Speaker 2: better as a very good number three? Do they still
- 33:39Speaker 2: let somebody else? And to Sonny Gray's credit, to Craig
- 33:43Speaker 2: Breslo's credit, he's been better than a number two starter.
- 33:46Speaker 2: He has been there number one in the absence of
- 33:49Speaker 2: Garrett Crochet who's been out for months with a shoulder injury,
- 33:52Speaker 2: and he's been nails. He should have been an All Star,
- 33:55Speaker 2: could have been. There was a case for him to
- 33:57Speaker 2: be the All Star starter, but he ended up not
- 33:59Speaker 2: even making the team. And he's been nails.
- 34:03Speaker 4: Though.
- 34:03Speaker 2: You mentioned the start on Sunday against the Rays, which
- 34:07Speaker 2: was super interesting because it was one of the hallmarks
- 34:11Speaker 2: of the Red Sox pitching staff this season that they
- 34:14Speaker 2: don't really get stinkers. If a starting pitcher that night
- 34:19Speaker 2: isn't going good, he at least holds it down and
- 34:23Speaker 2: survives as opposes to meltdown. Very few meltdowns this year. Yesterday,
- 34:27Speaker 2: Sunny Gray said he was rusty for a start back
- 34:30Speaker 2: off to their All Star break. Clearly didn't have his
- 34:32Speaker 2: best stuff, couldn't find the zone, base runners all over
- 34:36Speaker 2: the place, six innings, one run. That was pretty impressive,
- 34:39Speaker 2: and you see that from other guys too. Connelly Early
- 34:41Speaker 2: has been great at that. Peyton Totley, Ranji Suarez of
- 34:44Speaker 2: course has been has been key and is on the
- 34:45Speaker 2: brink of returning from injuries. So it's the rotation has
- 34:48Speaker 2: been a strength and Sunny Gray has been leading the way.
- 34:51Speaker 6: Yeah, speaking of rotation, you mentioned some of those young
- 34:53Speaker 6: starters that's really stepped up and been great. What's the
- 34:57Speaker 6: status on Giro Crochet? When are they getting their ace back?
- 35:01Speaker 2: They don't know. He right now is not even throwing,
- 35:05Speaker 2: not even playing catch. So if he got clear today,
- 35:09Speaker 2: it would probably take what six weeks you figure has
- 35:12Speaker 2: to fully stretch back out on the pitch, count front,
- 35:15Speaker 2: minor league, rehab assignment, et cetera. So realistically, you're looking
- 35:20Speaker 2: at if you can get Garrett Crochet back in September,
- 35:23Speaker 2: then that's a win. So they've survived this long without him.
- 35:26Speaker 2: It's been fascinating and impressive, and they don't really have
- 35:30Speaker 2: any clarity there. They're still working on strengthening that shoulder
- 35:33Speaker 2: in that rotator cuff.
- 35:39Speaker 1: Tim, We appreciate the time. We're excited to see what
- 35:42Speaker 1: the Red Sox do for the rest of the season.
- 35:44Speaker 1: I'm excited to have them on Apple TV this Friday.
- 35:47Speaker 1: So I'll see you at Fenway because I assume you'll
- 35:48Speaker 1: be there.
- 35:49Speaker 2: Yes, yes, of course, of course, aw soo.
- 35:52Speaker 1: I know all the fans are always thrilled when we're
- 35:54Speaker 1: on Apple TV and not on their normal nest, but
- 35:56Speaker 1: we'll be there, Thank you so much. If you want
