- 0:00Speaker 1: It's Elena Wood from Nightingale College, and she's on the
- 0:03Speaker 1: phone with us, and she asks the question to which
- 0:06Speaker 1: I will answer, no, to all seven forms. Are you
- 0:10Speaker 1: getting all seven forms of rest? No, I'm not sure
- 0:16Speaker 1: if I'm getting any of them. Elena, this is this
- 0:19Speaker 1: is depressing.
- 0:22Speaker 2: You know, I believe that about you. Unfortunately, I know
- 0:26Speaker 2: that you are go go go.
- 0:27Speaker 3: You've seen me, haven't you. You've seen the dark circles under.
- 0:31Speaker 2: My eyes, and you know you're You're definitely not alone here.
- 0:38Speaker 2: I think many of us are are first of all,
- 0:41Speaker 2: just simply not getting enough sleep, which.
- 0:43Speaker 3: Is physical, physical rest.
- 0:45Speaker 2: Yeah, physical rest, yeah yeah, and just those other pieces
- 0:50Speaker 2: of rest too, are few and far between. I think
- 0:54Speaker 2: for a lot a lot of us, life is busy
- 0:56Speaker 2: and we've got to prioritize it.
- 0:58Speaker 1: A quality sleep is just last night, I went to
- 1:03Speaker 1: bed at a reasonable time, but I couldn't.
- 1:06Speaker 3: Fall asleep, so it wasn't qualified cheese.
- 1:08Speaker 1: I got up and I finally fell asleep, and then
- 1:12Speaker 1: I woke up an hour before I normally do, and
- 1:14Speaker 1: then I just got up.
- 1:17Speaker 2: Oh that's so frustrating. Yeah, hopefully today you can find
- 1:21Speaker 2: some time where you can or cigarettes.
- 1:26Speaker 1: Yeah, now I should be able to sleep tonight because
- 1:28Speaker 1: I'm exhausted today's But so besides sleep, what other kinds
- 1:34Speaker 1: of rest are there?
- 1:36Speaker 2: Yeah, so sleep falls under physical rest, like we're saying,
- 1:40Speaker 2: and of course you can do other things like just
- 1:42Speaker 2: taking a break, buying down. The next type of rest
- 1:46Speaker 2: is mental rest, and this is just a way of
- 1:50Speaker 2: giving our mind a break, in particular from trying to
- 1:54Speaker 2: make decisions and solve problems, doing things like meditation, taking
- 1:59Speaker 2: mini breaks while we're working, and then also of course
- 2:03Speaker 2: engaging in hobbies that we enjoy that allow our minds
- 2:07Speaker 2: to rest a little bit.
- 2:08Speaker 1: That's why Gina collects stamps. She's a stamp collector, you.
- 2:11Speaker 2: Know, i'cusing me, Oh my goodness.
- 2:18Speaker 4: I'm a nap collector.
- 2:20Speaker 3: Collector collects disease.
- 2:25Speaker 4: What's the difference between mental rest and emotional rest.
- 2:32Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean it's it is hard to not it's
- 2:36Speaker 1: hard to be calm in the face of of of
- 2:40Speaker 1: tension in the workplace or things like that. That's that's
- 2:45Speaker 1: where your emotional rest needs to come into play.
- 2:49Speaker 2: Yeah, So emotional rest is about allowing ourselves, first of all,
- 2:53Speaker 2: to experience our emotions in healthy ways and of course,
- 2:57Speaker 2: you can support when we need that kind of support
- 3:00Speaker 2: for our emotional well being, and sometimes removing ourselves from
- 3:05Speaker 2: situations if they're emotionally draining. That kind of a thing.
- 3:10Speaker 3: That's which with me usually involves door slamming.
- 3:16Speaker 2: That may or may not fall under healthy and coping skills.
- 3:20Speaker 4: So you're interrupting my sensory rest with your loud door
- 3:24Speaker 4: slamming sensory.
- 3:26Speaker 2: Rest, Yes, exactly.
- 3:29Speaker 4: You know.
- 3:31Speaker 2: Oh, it's so true. In our world of constant technology
- 3:35Speaker 2: and noise, it can be really really difficult finding some
- 3:39Speaker 2: time in a day when we can step away from
- 3:42Speaker 2: our screens, we can be in a space that is
- 3:46Speaker 2: more or less quiet. I understand we might not always
- 3:49Speaker 2: be able to find a silent place, but you know,
- 3:54Speaker 2: sometimes I will just step away from my home desk
- 3:57Speaker 2: and I'll just look out the window for a few minutes.
- 4:00Speaker 2: It makes me feel like I can disconnect at least
- 4:04Speaker 2: a little bit from some of the chaos that's going
- 4:07Speaker 2: on in life.
- 4:08Speaker 3: So it works for cats, it might work for us.
- 4:10Speaker 2: Right, I know, we're really no different. I just need
- 4:14Speaker 2: to spawn in the sun. I can lie down, I'm good, look.
- 4:16Speaker 1: Out the window. Yeah, creative rest. Now, all this I
- 4:20Speaker 1: don't understand what is Yeah?
- 4:22Speaker 3: What is this?
- 4:23Speaker 2: Yeah? So this could happen a couple of different ways,
- 4:26Speaker 2: just depending on what your needs are. If you are,
- 4:30Speaker 2: for example, a professional creator and all you've been doing
- 4:33Speaker 2: all day is writing or drawing or whatever, you can
- 4:37Speaker 2: step away and give yourself a break from that. If
- 4:39Speaker 2: your job, or you know, your life is a little
- 4:42Speaker 2: bit less creative, it might include stepping into your art,
- 4:47Speaker 2: your music, whatever it might be. So for most of us,
- 4:51Speaker 2: going to the theater, drawing or writing something just for
- 4:56Speaker 2: fun could be a nice creative rest.
- 4:58Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 4:59Speaker 1: It's like I've known people who are creative, who are
- 5:01Speaker 1: writers or painters or things like that, and the way
- 5:04Speaker 1: they they stop all of that and they go out
- 5:06Speaker 1: and chop.
- 5:07Speaker 3: Wood, you know where they go bowling or.
- 5:09Speaker 2: Just yeah, just exactly exactly.
- 5:15Speaker 1: And then finally we have spiritual rest.
- 5:22Speaker 3: We skipped, didn't.
- 5:23Speaker 2: We We've got social.
- 5:24Speaker 3: Social social rest? What's that?
- 5:27Speaker 2: Yeah? Social rest it could be spending time alone, or
- 5:31Speaker 2: it might look more like spending time with people who
- 5:34Speaker 2: are uplifting and supportive. So again, it kind of depends
- 5:38Speaker 2: on your needs. Some of us need to really recharge
- 5:41Speaker 2: that alone battery, and some of us really need that
- 5:45Speaker 2: more meaningful and deep connection, just finding a space where
- 5:49Speaker 2: you feel at ease and where you feel comfortable in
- 5:52Speaker 2: that moment.
- 5:53Speaker 1: Yeah, I think I'm not good at being alone, even
- 5:56Speaker 1: when I'm by myself, I like I'm listening to a
- 5:59Speaker 1: pod cast, or you don't want to be with your
- 6:02Speaker 1: own thought?
- 6:03Speaker 2: Yeah, I will some more sensory.
- 6:06Speaker 3: I excel at it.
- 6:08Speaker 1: You want to be alone with my thoughts, your thoughts.
- 6:14Speaker 2: Just our own thoughts.
- 6:16Speaker 3: And then now we get to spiritual Now we.
- 6:19Speaker 2: Get to spiritual rest. And this might look like practices
- 6:23Speaker 2: such as meditation or even prayer. It could also look
- 6:27Speaker 2: like just connecting a little bit more deeply with what
- 6:30Speaker 2: our higher purposes and understanding our connection to the larger picture.
- 6:37Speaker 2: You know that, the understanding that we are one small
- 6:39Speaker 2: part of a greater whole.
- 6:41Speaker 1: All right, I think that. Yeah, I got it. I'm
- 6:44Speaker 1: gonna I'm gonna work on every one of these, starting to.
- 6:47Speaker 2: Do start with one.
- 6:49Speaker 1: Okay, Well, I will thank you, Elena. Where can people
- 6:52Speaker 1: find out more?
