- 0:10Speaker 1: and information on the NFL Draft. The new England Patriots
- 0:13Speaker 1: Flag now here to preview the defensive lineman. The writers
- 0:16Speaker 1: of Patriots dot Com. Time once again for another Draft
- 0:20Speaker 1: podcasts review. Here at Toilets Stadium, Mike do So, Evan
- 0:23Speaker 1: Lazar and me Paul Piullo, Grandpa Paul, here to talk
- 0:28Speaker 1: about some defensive lineman and we will definitely spend some
- 0:32Speaker 1: time on both the edge guys and the defensive tackles.
- 0:35Speaker 1: And I'm going to start with the edge because I think,
- 0:39Speaker 1: first of all, I'm the host and I get to
- 0:40Speaker 1: decide these things. But more importantly, I think it's more
- 0:43Speaker 1: of a position of need, and I think it's a
- 0:46Speaker 1: pretty good class. You know, overall of the edge guys,
- 0:50Speaker 1: based on not my thoughts and observations, but those of
- 0:55Speaker 1: some of the guys that do this, we're a living
- 0:58Speaker 1: that I would respect. Guys like Daniel Jeremiah, I think
- 1:01Speaker 1: has been pretty outspoken about the quality of the edge class.
- 1:05Speaker 1: So I don't necessarily think it would be a first
- 1:09Speaker 1: round consideration, although there has been some news lately about that.
- 1:13Speaker 1: But this is definitely a spot where Matthew Judon, you know,
- 1:17Speaker 1: sort of creeping into his thirties, Josh Uche coming off
- 1:20Speaker 1: a career high eleven and a half sacks, but also
- 1:24Speaker 1: entering a contract year, a free agent year. So I
- 1:28Speaker 1: think this is something that the Patriots could be interested in.
- 1:31Speaker 1: How do you guys see it? Yeah, I mean not
- 1:32Speaker 1: really an unknown quantity at this position for the Patriots too.
- 1:34Speaker 1: And I just I asked myself what happens if Matthew
- 1:36Speaker 1: Judon gets hurt, Like, if Matthew Judon gets hurt, it's
- 1:39Speaker 1: like co read across the front of the defense. So
- 1:42Speaker 1: I think it's a position to need. And I've said
- 1:44Speaker 1: this many times, and no matter how many times I
- 1:45Speaker 1: jump into this position, Coup, I just can't really seem
- 1:48Speaker 1: to get a beat on who I like and who
- 1:49Speaker 1: would fit. I don't know if it's their drafting of
- 1:52Speaker 1: the last couple of years of taking guys like ouch,
- 1:54Speaker 1: you know, Imphony Jennings is more in the model, Like
- 1:56Speaker 1: I think Amphony Jennings and like, yeah, that's a Patriots
- 1:58Speaker 1: type guy. So I'm still kind of gravitating towards those guys.
- 2:01Speaker 1: I just don't know if they are, so I just
- 2:03Speaker 1: I feel like I don't have a good beat, and
- 2:05Speaker 1: I think they're gonna take one of these guys and
- 2:06Speaker 1: be like, didn't even see it coming, and I already
- 2:08Speaker 1: see that's actually I feel exact same way, because there's like,
- 2:14Speaker 1: I don't know, there's fifteen guys that might go on
- 2:16Speaker 1: the top one hundred and this it's a really good class,
- 2:19Speaker 1: but all of them are very skill set specific, right,
- 2:24Speaker 1: So just going off the first round to get into
- 2:27Speaker 1: some of the names, Lucas van Ness is a classic
- 2:31Speaker 1: power rusher. His nickname is Hercules. He's a speed to
- 2:35Speaker 1: power bull rusher. But then you have a guy like
- 2:39Speaker 1: me and sounds like Paul has no interests. And then
- 2:42Speaker 1: but then you have guys like a Nolan Smith who
- 2:45Speaker 1: is three two hundred and forty pounds and is just
- 2:49Speaker 1: a screamer off the edge with great athleticism. They've gone
- 2:52Speaker 1: both directions. To your point, they have an Anthony Jennings
- 2:55Speaker 1: and they have a Josh Uch. So which one do
- 2:57Speaker 1: they covet more? At the top of the draft if
- 3:00Speaker 1: they're going to take one of these guys, and let's
- 3:02Speaker 1: say the top seventy five picks, who which direction are
- 3:05Speaker 1: we going in? Are we going speedy and explosive in
- 3:08Speaker 1: bendy or are we going power? Because there's a little
- 3:11Speaker 1: bit of it's a pick your flavor kind of draft
- 3:14Speaker 1: amongst this edge group, and not a lot in terms
- 3:16Speaker 1: of consensus separating basically, the guys that are going to
- 3:20Speaker 1: go ten through seventy five. You could convince me that
- 3:23Speaker 1: any of those guys could go ten from seventy five.
- 3:25Speaker 1: So you're really talking about who do you like out
- 3:28Speaker 1: of this group, which is tough. Mike. I mentioned that
- 3:30Speaker 1: the Patriots have sort of been in the news a
- 3:32Speaker 1: little bit, you know, on the periphery with Tyree Wilson,
- 3:37Speaker 1: kid out of Texas Tech, first round pick of top
- 3:40Speaker 1: half of the first round, first round pick, and there
- 3:44Speaker 1: were some reports that the Patriots have set to meet
- 3:47Speaker 1: with him. Your thoughts on, you know, maybe but that report, first,
- 3:51Speaker 1: do you think that might mean something more than just
- 3:54Speaker 1: due diligence? No, I mean, I think it's it's good.
- 3:56Speaker 1: We've talked about if other positions are taken at fourteen,
- 3:59Speaker 1: you know, a guy like this, you know, maybe he
- 4:01Speaker 1: slips through the cracks, but I think he's just an Adonis.
- 4:03Speaker 1: I mean I had to pull up his side. I
- 4:05Speaker 1: mean thirty almost thirty six inch arm six six two seventy.
- 4:09Speaker 1: You know, It's another part that confuses me with this
- 4:11Speaker 1: Evan is the way that they kind of play Teatrick
- 4:14Speaker 1: Wise on the edge on one side, hand down defensive end,
- 4:16Speaker 1: and then they play Jude on and they you know,
- 4:17Speaker 1: there's a lot of rotation there, so what that that
- 4:20Speaker 1: adds another layer of it. So for him, you know,
- 4:22Speaker 1: I think you can upgrade somebody like Teatrick Wise. I
- 4:24Speaker 1: think that this guy could probably be you know, maybe
- 4:27Speaker 1: hand down, maybe he drops a little bit, but huge guy.
- 4:29Speaker 1: And that's like if you're talking about fourteen overall, I
- 4:31Speaker 1: think he's the player that would be in that range
- 4:34Speaker 1: that you'd have to grab. Yeah, Mike and I are
- 4:35Speaker 1: doing dueling big boards right our top fifty fits and
- 4:39Speaker 1: I didn't have Tyree Wilson on my big board spoiler alert,
- 4:42Speaker 1: because I didn't think you'd be there at fourteen. I
- 4:44Speaker 1: didn't think it was a realistic. I always say you
- 4:46Speaker 1: got to look yourself in the mirror, and if that
- 4:48Speaker 1: you know, I'm not gonna put Will Anderson on this list,
- 4:50Speaker 1: and I kind of felt the same way with Tyree Wilson,
- 4:53Speaker 1: but to the point that we were just making he
- 4:55Speaker 1: is a power rusher. He is. His power when you
- 4:59Speaker 1: watch him on film, is overwhelmingly dominant. But he's not
- 5:03Speaker 1: He's stiff, he's rigid, he's not a bender. He doesn't
- 5:06Speaker 1: have great flexibility. I don't necessarily want to drop him
- 5:09Speaker 1: off the edge either like into a low coverage or
- 5:11Speaker 1: something like that. So he's a prototypical big long almost
- 5:18Speaker 1: like a Dietrick Wise. I think he's like souped up
- 5:20Speaker 1: Dietrich Wise would probably be a first round Teachercquise Right,
- 5:23Speaker 1: a decent comp you know. I think there's a little
- 5:25Speaker 1: bit of like George karloftis to his game, to the
- 5:28Speaker 1: way how powerful he is. But I think the arm
- 5:30Speaker 1: length really stands out, and that's Dietrich Wise. But maybe
- 5:33Speaker 1: the league isn't as high on a player like that
- 5:35Speaker 1: because he doesn't have that prototypical fifteen sacks season built
- 5:40Speaker 1: he's a little bit different than that. Yeah, and Nevin
- 5:42Speaker 1: you mentioned and actually Mike you two about the different
- 5:45Speaker 1: shapes and sizes these guys come in, and Evan mentioned
- 5:48Speaker 1: Nolan Smith as being one of the really smaller guys
- 5:52Speaker 1: sort of a little bit bigger than that, but kind
- 5:53Speaker 1: of that athlete. The kid from Auburn, you know, Derek
- 5:56Speaker 1: call is a guy that I haven't watched a lot
- 5:59Speaker 1: of tape of in this pre draft process, but I
- 6:02Speaker 1: do remember him a lot from watching Auburn games, and
- 6:06Speaker 1: he was a guy that sort of needed to be
- 6:08Speaker 1: accounted for. I don't I'm just curious that you guys
- 6:10Speaker 1: maybe maybe a first round talent now, I don't know
- 6:13Speaker 1: if he's a little later than that now, ye just
- 6:16Speaker 1: I mean I haven't mentioned big boards. He's one of
- 6:18Speaker 1: the guys that I that I put on and I
- 6:19Speaker 1: mean I don't know exactly where where he falls in that,
- 6:22Speaker 1: Like I don't know the Day one I was thinking
- 6:24Speaker 1: him more of a Day two guy. Um, But yeah,
- 6:27Speaker 1: I think he heat to me fits kind of like
- 6:29Speaker 1: all the profile, the size profile, the captain profile, you know,
- 6:32Speaker 1: those kind of things. Um, athletic, he just seems more
- 6:35Speaker 1: traditional to me. He seems like if we're talking about
- 6:37Speaker 1: Patriots kind of guys, he seems to me like one
- 6:40Speaker 1: of their guys. He's got incredibly violent and explosive hands,
- 6:44Speaker 1: like you that guy sets an edge better than anybody else.
- 6:48Speaker 1: And I know we've heard it so many times with
- 6:50Speaker 1: Bill just set the edge, set the edge, set the edge,
- 6:53Speaker 1: and how important that is. You are not going to
- 6:55Speaker 1: have a problem with the edge on Derek Hall's sign.
- 6:58Speaker 1: It just you know, So don't think that this is
- 7:00Speaker 1: just sort of like coach speaking stuff when we say
- 7:03Speaker 1: these kinds of phrases. I would just I would point
- 7:06Speaker 1: to a guy like Dietrich Wise because I think most
- 7:09Speaker 1: Patriots fans would look and say, wow, he had a
- 7:12Speaker 1: really good year last year. I would agree. I think
- 7:14Speaker 1: it was his best year by far. You know, when
- 7:16Speaker 1: he was best at last year? That was an improvement,
- 7:19Speaker 1: was that what Evans talking about. I thought he was
- 7:21Speaker 1: a guy that you could run at earlier in his
- 7:23Speaker 1: career and you couldn't do that last year. I think
- 7:26Speaker 1: that's probably the biggest growth in his game, was being
- 7:29Speaker 1: a little bit more well rounded as a guy who
- 7:31Speaker 1: could set the edge and not be victimized in that.
- 7:35Speaker 1: In that regard, I mean, he looked like a guy
- 7:36Speaker 1: like Hucha. I mean that's not really not really his thing.
- 7:38Speaker 1: You know, he just don't have That's why he's not
- 7:40Speaker 1: on the field every down. All right. That's the biggest
- 7:42Speaker 1: thing is I just looked it up. Och was on
- 7:44Speaker 1: the field for thirty eight percent of the snaps last year.
- 7:46Speaker 1: So even though he had that big sack season, when
- 7:48Speaker 1: you start to get into are they going to give
- 7:50Speaker 1: him a second contract? And what is the type of
- 7:53Speaker 1: player that they would pick in the top fifty of
- 7:55Speaker 1: a draft or even in the first round. You got
- 7:57Speaker 1: to get more than forty percent snap production out of
- 7:59Speaker 1: it first round pick. That guy's got to be able
- 8:02Speaker 1: to be on the field for all three downs. Derek
- 8:04Speaker 1: Hall is a really fun player. I liked him a
- 8:06Speaker 1: lot on film. I liked watching him in games. Yeah,
- 8:09Speaker 1: like I said, not as familiar now, but he's a
- 8:11Speaker 1: stiffer guy too though he's not He's not a u J.
- 8:14Speaker 1: He's a power set the edge, great hands, like I said,
- 8:18Speaker 1: I mean, there's like clips of him like in pregame,
- 8:22Speaker 1: like doing his his exercise with his hand technique and
- 8:25Speaker 1: you're just like you know, karate master before before we
- 8:30Speaker 1: move on to the big uglies inside um any day
- 8:35Speaker 1: two three kind of guys that you guys, this is
- 8:38Speaker 1: what Evan has to go to with. Evan has to know.
- 8:40Speaker 1: Evan has to carry me on this one, because this
- 8:42Speaker 1: is exactly the area where I just feel like there's
- 8:44Speaker 1: gonna be a guy. I mean, Colby Wooden is one
- 8:46Speaker 1: name that I've highlighted that I but again, I go
- 8:49Speaker 1: back and forth on some of these guys, um that
- 8:52Speaker 1: I just I don't know exactly where the value is.
- 8:54Speaker 1: There is the value going to be those lesser athletic
- 8:57Speaker 1: guys who were stout, because I think they need those.
- 8:59Speaker 1: But at the same time, you see Jay is going
- 9:01Speaker 1: to be a free agent and you need that kind
- 9:03Speaker 1: of guy too. Yeah. I think the one guy in
- 9:04Speaker 1: the first round we haven't mentioned Jets Miles Murphy from Clemson.
- 9:08Speaker 1: Two things, though they don't draft from Clemson, that's one
- 9:11Speaker 1: of those schools that they have a that's one of
- 9:15Speaker 1: those things that they have a thing against. But and
- 9:17Speaker 1: I also would say with Murphy, the one thing that
- 9:19Speaker 1: I have a problem with, or I have trouble with
- 9:21Speaker 1: evaluating him, is that he's he doesn't dominate on tape ever,
- 9:26Speaker 1: but he's just good at everything, but he's not great
- 9:29Speaker 1: at any one thing. And those types of guys at
- 9:32Speaker 1: fourteen overall, I just want somebody that I can turn
- 9:34Speaker 1: on a film of him in college and be like, Wow,
- 9:36Speaker 1: that was a great game by so and so, and
- 9:38Speaker 1: I just can't really I don't have that game for
- 9:41Speaker 1: Miles Murphy, which I think is a little bit of
- 9:43Speaker 1: a pause. When you're that early in the draft. You
- 9:45Speaker 1: want somebody that can take over, and I didn't necessarily
- 9:47Speaker 1: see him do that. But Day two I think is
- 9:50Speaker 1: really the sweet spot for this edge class because there's
- 9:52Speaker 1: just so many guys that I think are going to
- 9:54Speaker 1: come off the board there. I'm not particularly high on
- 9:58Speaker 1: Isaiah Fosky from Notre Dame, but I think that he's
- 10:01Speaker 1: a guy that's maybe like Day two Miles Murphy, where
- 10:04Speaker 1: he's not flashy, he's not gonna take over games, but
- 10:07Speaker 1: he's not gonna be a liability out on the field either,
- 10:10Speaker 1: and you're gonna kind of be set at his spot.
- 10:13Speaker 1: I'm gonna butcher his name. But Uzama from Kansas State,
- 10:16Speaker 1: Felix Usama. I really like him as more of like
- 10:19Speaker 1: a hybrid hand in the dirt, stand up guy off
- 10:21Speaker 1: the edge. Will McDonald has a lot of love from
- 10:24Speaker 1: the draft media. He's got some bend and he's somebody
- 10:28Speaker 1: that has that that repertoire, right, you know, you talk
- 10:30Speaker 1: about a toolbox like that guy's got a whole toolbox,
- 10:33Speaker 1: a pass rush moves, which I think people uh kind
- 10:36Speaker 1: of a are cool with, you know, they like that
- 10:39Speaker 1: type of stuff on film. And Bjjilari from LSU and
- 10:42Speaker 1: really all the gay from LSU to his teammate, they're both.
- 10:45Speaker 1: They're both good Day two guys as well. So those
- 10:48Speaker 1: are some of them. Keyon White. I guess it's probably
- 10:50Speaker 1: the last one in that that grouping, that tier of guys.
- 10:54Speaker 1: And I think all those guys, like I said at
- 10:56Speaker 1: the beginning, are do you like chocolate ice cream? And
- 10:59Speaker 1: you know like cookies and cream? Like which way do
- 11:01Speaker 1: you want to go? We need ice cream? And I'll
- 11:03Speaker 1: mention you know, Olari just brother playing for the Giants now,
- 11:09Speaker 1: so uh some bloodlines there. And also one last guy,
- 11:13Speaker 1: old friend Andre Carter the second who played an army
- 11:18Speaker 1: just like his dad, really tall, really long. Not I
- 11:21Speaker 1: can't say he's taught not the same, it's not, it's
- 11:24Speaker 1: not the same. We've had this argument. Yes, I don't remember,
- 11:28Speaker 1: somebody brought up because he's an average prostet. Yeah I
- 11:32Speaker 1: thought it was his son, I really did. It's not
- 11:34Speaker 1: it's not his son. Really no, it's not. But Andre
- 11:37Speaker 1: Carter is the same, like very similar build. We talk
- 11:40Speaker 1: a lot about guys that rise up the board post season,
- 11:44Speaker 1: right in terms of Senior Bowl combine risers. He's gone
- 11:48Speaker 1: the other fall like an anchor, like sunk to the
- 11:51Speaker 1: bottom of the ocean. We don't need to spend any
- 11:53Speaker 1: time with him. I just I was only bringing him
- 11:55Speaker 1: up because I thought it was Andrea Carter's son. So yeah,
- 11:57Speaker 1: he had some like something buzz going into the draft process,
- 12:01Speaker 1: and now he's not even touching the third round. So
- 12:03Speaker 1: obviously Jaylen Carter leads us off on the inside and
- 12:08Speaker 1: just some controversy with where he's gonna end up going.
- 12:12Speaker 1: A lot of people felt like he was the number
- 12:14Speaker 1: one overall pick, right, um, you know, really no questions
- 12:17Speaker 1: asked with that caliber of a player. Obviously, Carolina didn't
- 12:20Speaker 1: trade up to draft a defensive tackle like you know,
- 12:23Speaker 1: so we know they're going to take a quarterback. But
- 12:26Speaker 1: he could now go anywhere really in that top half
- 12:29Speaker 1: of the first round. I know it. It's crazy because
- 12:32Speaker 1: he's really good. I mean, it's just it's hard now.
- 12:34Speaker 1: I mean, he's just one of those players where I like, yep,
- 12:35Speaker 1: that's that's easy to throw him in. He'll be He'll
- 12:37Speaker 1: be awesome. But I ask some some legal issues. We'll see.
- 12:41Speaker 1: I guess how that allay. Curious to get Paul's perspective
- 12:44Speaker 1: on it, because to me, those types of guys Paul
- 12:48Speaker 1: are off the board for the Patriots, Like I just
- 12:51Speaker 1: I don't think that guys that are getting mixed up
- 12:53Speaker 1: in that type of stuff. Two things, I think you're
- 12:57Speaker 1: as a rule, I think you're right. I agree with you.
- 13:00Speaker 1: I do think there are exceptions with First of all,
- 13:04Speaker 1: if it has anything to do with violence against women,
- 13:09Speaker 1: forget it. They're not taking them. You know, like, and
- 13:12Speaker 1: this came up, this is probably not your main to
- 13:14Speaker 1: the Defensive Lineman podcast here, but you know, Kareem Hunt
- 13:19Speaker 1: is still available, and you know Patriots signed James Robinson.
- 13:22Speaker 1: You're like, whoa could I had Kareem Hunt for probably
- 13:24Speaker 1: the same they're not. I don't think they're gonna go
- 13:27Speaker 1: there with a guy who has that in his history.
- 13:30Speaker 1: So this is not necessarily it's not related at all
- 13:34Speaker 1: to domestic battery or anything like that. But you could
- 13:38Speaker 1: make an argument that Dui is sort of on the periphery,
- 13:42Speaker 1: and you know whether or not reckless driving, dragging. You know,
- 13:47Speaker 1: it's obviously as serious, serious enough that it's it's causing
- 13:51Speaker 1: teams to take a step back. So the talent is obvious.
- 13:55Speaker 1: We'll have to see where he ends up landing. But
- 13:57Speaker 1: I would agree with Evans overall assessment. A lot of
- 13:59Speaker 1: the those guys, especially in the first round. I think
- 14:02Speaker 1: you want your first rounders to be pretty clean. Yeah,
- 14:04Speaker 1: character wise, yeah, I mean I think for me too.
- 14:08Speaker 1: I mean we talk a little bit about just fit
- 14:09Speaker 1: in within the Patriots scheme, and I do like these
- 14:12Speaker 1: this defensive tackle class. I feel like there's some good
- 14:14Speaker 1: nose tackles, like you know, day two, day three, Like
- 14:16Speaker 1: not Day two, day three guys. You know you could
- 14:18Speaker 1: take to compete with with Carl Davis, But you know,
- 14:21Speaker 1: Kalijah Cancy Like watching him, I'm like, would they ever
- 14:23Speaker 1: take you know, a six foot one, two hundred and
- 14:26Speaker 1: eighty pound just absolute wrecking ball that gets into the backfield.
- 14:28Speaker 1: It doesn't really seem like them, But at the same time,
- 14:30Speaker 1: it's like you need something to change, get to get
- 14:34Speaker 1: the defense over the hump. And and I just I
- 14:36Speaker 1: can't He's the kind of guy I can't really ignore
- 14:38Speaker 1: and it would probably be really off the beaten path
- 14:39Speaker 1: for them with a guy like that, but you can
- 14:42Speaker 1: make it a case for it. I'm torn on Cancy because,
- 14:46Speaker 1: on the one hand, I think that the smart thing
- 14:49Speaker 1: is to not be like, oh, he's just Aaron donn right, right,
- 14:53Speaker 1: because oh, he went to Pittsburgh and he's got the
- 14:55Speaker 1: similar skill set. And the reason why Aaron Donald slip
- 15:00Speaker 1: out of the top ten in his draft was not
- 15:02Speaker 1: because of film. He had some of the best film
- 15:04Speaker 1: in the draft. It was because of his size, and
- 15:06Speaker 1: it just happened that he was able to overcome it
- 15:08Speaker 1: and it worked out. What's the chances that Cancy's the opposite, right,
- 15:12Speaker 1: And I think that that's a little bit of a
- 15:14Speaker 1: risk there. I also just can't see them that, to me,
- 15:19Speaker 1: is a guy that Bill would only play thirty to
- 15:21Speaker 1: forty percent of the snaps like Josh Jay, like you're
- 15:23Speaker 1: only playing on passing downs like easily, right, I mean
- 15:26Speaker 1: kind of like that player, which just it's a get
- 15:28Speaker 1: up field. He gets off the ball and he gets
- 15:29Speaker 1: into the backfield quick. He certainly has some moments though,
- 15:32Speaker 1: where you you if you close your eyes, you'd be like, oh,
- 15:34Speaker 1: that that's Aaron Donald right, Like, you know that he
- 15:37Speaker 1: has those moments. There's no doubt about it. So the way,
- 15:39Speaker 1: I have to just ignore the Clemson guy too, because
- 15:41Speaker 1: we don't draft Clemson Buzzie like he's he's exact. Him
- 15:45Speaker 1: and Miles Murphy are like the same thing, but they
- 15:47Speaker 1: just played a little bit different positions. Uh, Brozzie's is
- 15:52Speaker 1: got a little bit more streaks of dominance on film,
- 15:54Speaker 1: but it's not a much more. And he's got some
- 15:56Speaker 1: injury history too, which is a concern. I saw just
- 15:59Speaker 1: real quick, I saw like high school film with him playing.
- 16:01Speaker 1: I don't know if you guys caught that on that,
- 16:02Speaker 1: but it was absolutely ridiculous. It's just somebody tweeted out,
- 16:05Speaker 1: but it was him, just like it was like assault
- 16:07Speaker 1: going on in the field, like just grabbing people and
- 16:09Speaker 1: throwing them down. It was crazy. So give me again,
- 16:13Speaker 1: and we like to I like to wrap up all
- 16:16Speaker 1: of these with some of the lower round prospects, and
- 16:20Speaker 1: I think defensive tackle. The pageots are always going to
- 16:23Speaker 1: take lineman. They have eleven picks. They're gonna take lineman
- 16:25Speaker 1: on both sides of the ball. So give me some
- 16:28Speaker 1: some candidates. I can tee a few up. KeAndre Colburn
- 16:33Speaker 1: from Texas was one I took in my latest mock
- 16:35Speaker 1: that you know, just fits that kind of interior. Where
- 16:37Speaker 1: was the Shrine Bowl guy? Yeah, so there's another part.
- 16:39Speaker 1: I mean other Shrine Bowl team, but him and Ajoma,
- 16:43Speaker 1: both Texas guys, were at the Shrine Bowl and they
- 16:45Speaker 1: were two of the best players on the field. But
- 16:47Speaker 1: that's you know, and again tie it to like Lawrence
- 16:49Speaker 1: guy Devon gotcha thirty years old, getting towards the end.
- 16:52Speaker 1: You need these former kind of defensive end, big bodies
- 16:55Speaker 1: to play inside. I think somebody like him, and I
- 16:57Speaker 1: gotta throw in local kid Gerald Clark, the I talked
- 17:00Speaker 1: to at the combine. Just again another you know, big wingspan,
- 17:03Speaker 1: big body, interior, space eat kind of kind of type
- 17:06Speaker 1: that that they like. So and then when you're when
- 17:08Speaker 1: you're talking about those those kinds of guys, you know
- 17:10Speaker 1: it sounds strange, but throw Barmore in there. You know,
- 17:13Speaker 1: Barmore's now going to be in his third year, so
- 17:16Speaker 1: if he can put it together all of a sudden
- 17:20Speaker 1: this time next year, you're like, well, you know, he's
- 17:21Speaker 1: appending free agents. So it is an area that you
- 17:24Speaker 1: have to look at some depth. Yeah, that's crazy just
- 17:26Speaker 1: to think that you're already in year three for Christian Barmore.
- 17:29Speaker 1: But a couple of guys that maybe more in the
- 17:31Speaker 1: top one hundred, but I think are kind of in
- 17:33Speaker 1: the in that day two early day three reigned for
- 17:36Speaker 1: the Patriots. One of my favorite prospects in this draft
- 17:39Speaker 1: is a added wama At, a boire from North Northwestern
- 17:44Speaker 1: who killed the combine. Has moments where you're just freakish
- 17:50Speaker 1: kind of lateral agility and get off on the football.
- 17:53Speaker 1: More of an interior rusher. I compared him to Ed
- 17:55Speaker 1: Oliver on the big board. He's like two eighty six
- 17:58Speaker 1: foot one two eighty so he's kind of, um, the
- 18:01Speaker 1: the cancie. You know, it's getting all the buzz. But
- 18:04Speaker 1: adibuare Is is somebody that I think is going to
- 18:06Speaker 1: get a little bit more as we get closer here.
- 18:09Speaker 1: But the classic Patriots guy. And I was it Saban
- 18:13Speaker 1: who revealed that Bill goes to the combine to scout
- 18:15Speaker 1: Scott the booties, Scot the butts the butt who's got
- 18:18Speaker 1: the guy say that the word on here. I don't
- 18:20Speaker 1: want to be I don't want to be Alex and
- 18:22Speaker 1: swear on the radio but that was very poor to me. Uh.
- 18:26Speaker 1: Mazzie Smith from Michigan. That guy has a big old
- 18:31Speaker 1: keyster and he is a very difficult human being, uh
- 18:34Speaker 1: to move off the line of scrimmage. I think that
- 18:37Speaker 1: the decent comp is like a Divon god Shaw type player,
- 18:41Speaker 1: somebody that probably is best as a shade but could
- 18:45Speaker 1: play straight up on the nose as well. Um, But
- 18:47Speaker 1: if you just need somebody that's gonna eat blocks, it's
- 18:50Speaker 1: gonna take on a double team and then occasionally is
- 18:53Speaker 1: maybe going to show some pressing shed technique of his own.
- 18:57Speaker 1: I think Mozzi Smith is that type of prototypical two
- 19:00Speaker 1: gap nose tackle type players. And then there's two guys
- 19:04Speaker 1: that I think are interesting more in that bar More
- 19:06Speaker 1: type of mold who have some size but have some
- 19:09Speaker 1: real explosiveness in Keanu Betton from Wisconsin and Grevon Dexter
- 19:14Speaker 1: from Florida that I think are two guys are gonna
- 19:16Speaker 1: probably be a third or fourth round picks. Benton has
- 19:19Speaker 1: some really freakish moments of game wrecking ability to rush
- 19:23Speaker 1: the passer and just get off blocks and move lad early,
- 19:26Speaker 1: and Dexter is one of those guys that has a
- 19:29Speaker 1: little bit of inconsistency to his game. But when he's
- 19:32Speaker 1: when he's on and you turn on that film, it's like,
- 19:35Speaker 1: who's the first guy off the ball, Like, who's the
- 19:37Speaker 1: guy that's getting in the neutral zone the fastest? Grevon
- 19:40Speaker 1: Dexter certainly has that. And then lastly uh siaka Ica
- 19:45Speaker 1: from Baylor um Danny Shelton, Yeah, probably the best of
- 19:48Speaker 1: the nose tackle kind of group. Yeah, he's he's like
- 19:51Speaker 1: three hundred and forty pounds, like he that is a
- 19:53Speaker 1: typical typical nose tackle. Like there's he's not gonna play
- 19:58Speaker 1: in passing situations. He can play on f in ten
- 20:00Speaker 1: goal line, short yardage that sort of thing, and good
- 20:04Speaker 1: luck moving that dude that that guy is a freaking
- 20:08Speaker 1: tank in the middle. So those are some of the
- 20:10Speaker 1: big boys. But I really like the guys like Benton
- 20:13Speaker 1: and Dexter. If you're talking about Paul just bringing up
- 20:16Speaker 1: Christian Barmore's rookie deal and everything like that, if you're
- 20:18Speaker 1: looking for that next Barmore, I think those two guys
- 20:21Speaker 1: probably fit that prototype the best because Barmore's three ten.
- 20:24Speaker 1: You know, he's he's a big he's a bigger guy,
- 20:26Speaker 1: so he's not like these cancies, you know, or the
- 20:29Speaker 1: Ediboires who are these finesse pass rushers, and like Mike,
- 20:32Speaker 1: you know, some of the smaller guys Mike bringing up
- 20:34Speaker 1: Dominique Easley. So you can't rule any of these guys out.
- 20:37Speaker 1: They've taken the big three hundred plus pound guys and
- 20:40Speaker 1: they've taken some of the smaller two hundred and eighty
- 20:42Speaker 1: pound guys too that they have an eye toured the
- 20:45Speaker 1: penetration and that interior pass rush. You know, think back,
- 20:49Speaker 1: you know, put it in the way back machine to
- 20:50Speaker 1: a guy like Jarvis Green that wasn't the biggest guy
- 20:53Speaker 1: in the world, but filled a role, played a part time,
- 20:56Speaker 1: you know in terms of percentages, you know, snap percentage,
- 20:59Speaker 1: but really productive in that kind of role. They've kind
- 21:01Speaker 1: of been searching for guys like that since now ideally
- 21:05Speaker 1: you get a guy like Barmore who's got the size
- 21:07Speaker 1: to hold up and the athleticism to pressure the pocket too.
- 21:11Speaker 1: So that's that's when you're really there's a lot of
- 21:13Speaker 1: the Jarvis screens, but the like Ty Warrens that those
- 21:18Speaker 1: guys don't really come up anymore because those guys are
- 21:21Speaker 1: now playing on the nose like they don't play them
- 21:23Speaker 1: as three four ends anymore in the college games. So
- 21:26Speaker 1: it's becoming one of those running back spots. Yeah, I
- 21:29Speaker 1: can get one in the sixth round. Yeah, but I
- 21:32Speaker 1: like that. Mike mentioned the Texas guys. Dante Still from
- 21:35Speaker 1: West Virginia is another guy that had a really good
- 21:37Speaker 1: um week at the Shrine Bowl that maybe they'd be
- 21:40Speaker 1: interested in later on in the draft. There's a couple
- 21:42Speaker 1: of those guys like Habaka Boldonado who's from Rome, Italy,
- 21:47Speaker 1: and so he hasn't been playing football for very long,
- 21:49Speaker 1: but he had a really, really good year last year
- 21:52Speaker 1: at pitt and is somebody that I think could get
- 21:54Speaker 1: even better as a pro. He's got the athletic athletic ability,
- 21:59Speaker 1: it's like a uf SEE fighter. Like early on that
- 22:02Speaker 1: was sort of the track that he wanted to take
- 22:04Speaker 1: and he's got some of that ability. But he's just
- 22:07Speaker 1: raw and needs to play more American football, So maybe
- 22:11Speaker 1: he gets there eventually. He said late day three guys,
- 22:13Speaker 1: and I named a bunch of top one. Now that's
- 22:16Speaker 1: that's fine. It's that that's what they come to these
- 22:18Speaker 1: podcasts where they want to hear about some of these
- 22:20Speaker 1: names and try to figure out some of the skill
- 22:22Speaker 1: sets that go along with the names, and Mike and
- 22:26Speaker 1: Evans certainly gave you a lot to choose from. We're
- 22:28Speaker 1: working our way through, guys. I think we only have
- 22:30Speaker 1: a couple of positions left um as we wind our way,
- 22:35Speaker 1: as we record this, I think we're the big ones
- 22:37Speaker 1: running back just about just about two weeks away. I
- 22:41Speaker 1: hate it from the draft, so we we are not done.
- 22:44Speaker 1: We are done with the defensive linemen for today, but
