- 0:22SPEAKER_00: If you had to pin down one universal emotion that all human beings experience, it's pain.
- 0:28SPEAKER_00: To be human means to suffer.
- 0:31SPEAKER_00: We suffer on a daily basis as we deal with the disappointments and frustrations of everyday life.
- 0:36SPEAKER_00: But we also suffer when we go through the occasional major trauma, like the death of a loved one, losing a job, a major sickness, a divorce, or any other major negative life event.
- 0:48SPEAKER_00: Now, sometimes we hesitate to share our pain because we're afraid to look weak, so we lock up our feelings in a box and we set it on a shelf in the back of a dark closet and we just try to forget about it.
- 0:59SPEAKER_00: Well, honestly, though, that's not a healthy way to deal with grief.
- 1:03SPEAKER_00: Instead, one of the best ways of working through your pain is to write about it.
- 1:07SPEAKER_00: The Brazilian novelist Paulo Coelho said, Tears are words that need to be written.
- 1:14SPEAKER_00: So how exactly should you write about your tears?
- 1:17SPEAKER_00: Well, I want to give you three quick ideas on today's episode.
- 1:21SPEAKER_00: First of all, you can journal about your tears.
- 1:24SPEAKER_00: Journaling is a time-tested method for working out your feelings and getting perspective on life's disappointments.
- 1:31SPEAKER_00: Second, you can write nonfiction articles, books, or other type of material where you talk about your experiences directly.
- 1:38SPEAKER_00: This is a really helpful way to work through your feelings with the added benefit of helping other people as well.
- 1:44SPEAKER_00: And third, you can channel your experiences into fiction.
- 1:47SPEAKER_00: This is an indirect way of processing your pain, of course, but it can also be the most powerful way.
- 1:52SPEAKER_00: And the reason is because you can say things through fiction that you could never really say in nonfiction.
- 1:58SPEAKER_00: And the way that you're saying them is through events, characters, and dialogue in your stories.
- 2:03SPEAKER_00: So whatever medium you choose to write about your tears, don't be afraid of your feelings.
- 2:09SPEAKER_00: Don't stuff your feelings in a box or lock them away in the back of a dark closet.
- 2:13SPEAKER_00: Writing about your pain can bring healing not just for you, but also for your readers as well.
- 2:19SPEAKER_00: You might just be surprised at how powerful your writing is when you choose to share the deepest part of yourself.
- 2:26SPEAKER_00: So here's today's challenge.
- 2:28SPEAKER_00: Think about the three ways that I described to write about your tears, which is journaling, nonfiction, and fiction, and consider how you can write about it to benefit yourself and others.
