- 0:02- There's a small circle of people who truly
- 0:04- understand what it takes to lead a health
- 0:05- system right now. The decisions are enormous.
- 0:08- The variables are constantly shifting, and the stakes
- 0:11- of getting a call wrong don't stay contained.
- 0:14- That's not a complaint. It's a structural reality.
- 0:17- And it's why the most effective c suite
- 0:19- leaders are deliberate about where they go to
- 0:21- pressure test their thinking.
- 0:22- Becker's fourteenth annual CEO and CFO roundtable
- 0:26- brings together more than 1,500
- 0:28- executive level attendees
- 0:30- and nearly 400 speakers for four days built
- 0:32- around growth, financial sustainability,
- 0:35- workforce strategy, and the leadership questions that don't
- 0:38- have easy answers.

- 0:50- This is Scott Becker with the Becker's Healthcare
- 0:53- podcast.
- 0:54- I'm thrilled today to be joined by Laura
- 0:56- Dirda.
- 0:57- Laura's the editor in chief of Becker's Healthcare.
- 1:00- She joins us weekly to share with us
- 1:01- a few of the key stories that she's
- 1:03- watching in healthcare. Laura, I'm gonna tee it
- 1:05- up and ask you to take it away.
- 1:07- What are a couple of the stories, the
- 1:08- trends that you're watching currently?
- 1:11- Yeah. Absolutely. Well, thank you so much, Scott.
- 1:13- I think a lot is happening right now
- 1:15- in health care and certainly, you know, one
- 1:17- of the big things that we have been
- 1:18- following over the last couple weeks as additional
- 1:21- news and trends emerge is just looking at
- 1:24- AI, but not just AI, thinking through cybersecurity
- 1:27- and what that means for hospitals and health
- 1:28- systems. I think, you know, all hospital CIOs
- 1:31- and CISOs and C suites in general have
- 1:34- really kept their eye on what's happening in
- 1:35- the cybersecurity space and trying to stay sharp
- 1:37- to make sure that they're evolving as quickly
- 1:40- as the technology is and and the potential
- 1:42- threats coming from a variety of different fronts
- 1:45- as AI proliferates. And so one of the
- 1:48- things that we have been following closely is
- 1:50- just the the types of governance that health
- 1:52- systems are trying to incorporate. There hasn't been
- 1:54- a lot of guidance until recently from the
- 1:57- federal government about what they should be doing.
- 1:59- And on June 2, president Trump signed an
- 2:01- executive order directing federal agencies to strengthen its
- 2:05- AI enabled cybersecurity
- 2:06- across government systems
- 2:08- and expand some of the protections for rural
- 2:10- hospitals as well as critical infrastructure, which is
- 2:13- so important because I I know that's something
- 2:16- the administration hadn't been wanting to do a
- 2:18- ton of, until recently. And it's been helpful
- 2:21- for hospitals and health systems as they're thinking
- 2:23- through their strategy to understand what the federal
- 2:26- government is doing and best practices
- 2:28- in guidance. And so among the most recent
- 2:30- requirements was Homeland Security is now taking the
- 2:33- next thirty days to provide some additional directive
- 2:36- expanding AI powered cyber defenses
- 2:39- across those systems and especially
- 2:41- providing tools to local governments, rural hospitals, banks,
- 2:44- and more so that they'll be able to,
- 2:46- really have a stronger
- 2:48- line of defense against these cyber attacks. I
- 2:51- I know in the past,
- 2:52- especially rural hospitals, community hospitals, and those that
- 2:55- may not have the most resources for the
- 2:57- strongest defensive have have been pretty vulnerable to
- 2:59- cyberattacks.
- 3:00- And so
- 3:01- as we see an increased potential and possibility
- 3:04- with AI to make those attacks more sophisticated,
- 3:08- it's been critical to have that kind
- 3:11- of defenses in place and then knowing what
- 3:13- you need to do. And, again, something we've
- 3:15- been hearing from,
- 3:16- cybersecurity experts and CIOs in general is that
- 3:19- one of the things they really are worried
- 3:20- about in addition to the
- 3:22- technology and being able to identify and, you
- 3:24- know, prevent attacks,
- 3:26- is also making sure that their teams are
- 3:28- ready and prepared to,
- 3:29- withstand
- 3:30- any downtime that they might have because of
- 3:33- cyberattacks
- 3:33- and
- 3:34- revert back to paper records and know what
- 3:37- they need to do if they've been relying
- 3:38- on technology in the operating room and how
- 3:41- they really, can continue operations and providing critical
- 3:44- care for patients,
- 3:45- especially with the workforce
- 3:47- primarily now that a lot of folks, you
- 3:49- know, have never had to operate on paper
- 3:51- records. It's always been electronic records and and
- 3:54- reliant on technology. And so that's something
- 3:56- that organizations are thinking deeply about and and
- 3:59- trying to make sure that they're prepared for
- 4:00- and ready for.
- 4:03- Thank you. And the AI seems to be
- 4:05- both helping the the attackers
- 4:08- and the defense. So so fascinating to watch
- 4:10- that accelerate.
- 4:12- And and I guess the average cost of
- 4:14- a serious data breach at a health system
- 4:16- is a is a crazy amount of money.
- 4:18- So and and, also, as you said, the
- 4:20- concern about system shutdown
- 4:22- versus the ceiling of records, all of those
- 4:24- cause tremendous trouble for health systems and for
- 4:27- patients as well. So we're watching cybersecurity,
- 4:30- watching some new standards come into play, which
- 4:32- will be challenging for people to put into
- 4:34- place but needed.
- 4:35- Tell us what else you're watching, Kelsey, besides
- 4:37- the the continuing evolving threat of cybersecurity
- 4:40- or or cybersecurity? Definitely.
- 4:42- Absolutely.
- 4:43- So,
- 4:44- it it's been interesting. Again, another one of
- 4:47- the the big, pieces of news coming out
- 4:49- of,
- 4:50- the health care space is looking at, on
- 4:53- the technology front, being able to incorporate AI
- 4:57- into the organizations, making people more builders. And
- 5:00- so, you know, a lot of hospitals and
- 5:02- health systems have bought enterprise wide accounts for
- 5:05- their teams to learn how to build agents
- 5:08- and figure out how they can, maximize their
- 5:10- efficiencies. But at the same time,
- 5:12- the token system by which,
- 5:15- the AI companies are charging on,
- 5:18- is just a fascinating
- 5:19- wild west feel right now as some are
- 5:22- potentially overcharging, some are undercharging.
- 5:25- Likely, there'll be a balance in between over
- 5:27- the next
- 5:28- several months or so to to kinda balance
- 5:30- that out. But in in the interim, CIOs
- 5:32- are trying to understand how much use, that
- 5:35- people have and what is actually necessary versus,
- 5:38- you know, what, they might be spending time
- 5:41- and resources and tokens on that aren't actually
- 5:43- gonna return,
- 5:45- much value into the health system. How do
- 5:48- they balance all that, weigh all that, and
- 5:49- then understand too those costs amount quickly? And,
- 5:53- as companies evolve and potentially,
- 5:55- you know, charge more for some of those
- 5:57- tokens or or team members get more comfortable
- 5:59- with AI and start using it for a
- 6:01- good variety and good additional things, that's something,
- 6:04- again, that's top of mind for the whole
- 6:06- c suite as they're thinking about, you know,
- 6:08- making transformational pushes,
- 6:10- trying to be more innovative, and having teams
- 6:13- that are ready for the workforce of the
- 6:14- future and very AI enabled.
- 6:17- It then comes down to, you know, what
- 6:18- are the actual,
- 6:20- use cases that are gonna make the most
- 6:21- sense and how do you find that right
- 6:22- balance. So at the end of the day,
- 6:24- you're not getting huge bills or being surprised
- 6:26- by how much it costs, in order to
- 6:28- do this because oftentimes,
- 6:30- you know, if somebody runs out of tokens,
- 6:32- there'll be
- 6:33- ways that,
- 6:34- they continue to use and and upcharge with
- 6:36- that. So it's been just fascinating,
- 6:39- to kind of hear CIOs and CFOs talk
- 6:41- through those things and,
- 6:43- think through what is their actual strategy, how
- 6:45- can they be smart about it, and,
- 6:47- figure out what the the billing and and
- 6:49- partnerships are gonna be with some of these,
- 6:51- enterprise
- 6:52- AI,
- 6:53- contracts that they're forming.
- 6:55- Right. And some of the enterprise AI contracts
- 6:57- are really expensive. So people are trying to
- 6:59- figure out how to weigh that with other
- 7:01- vendors that aren't as expensive,
- 7:03- and figuring out what's actually working, what's not
- 7:06- working, and what they need. But but, yes,
- 7:07- we're hearing some serious numbers around some of
- 7:09- this stuff.
- 7:11- For sure. And then I think, Scott, to
- 7:13- make kind of a a right turn here,
- 7:15- you know, in addition to all of the
- 7:16- technologies
- 7:18- happenings here, we're also watching very, very closely
- 7:21- a good number of moves that are happening,
- 7:23- just on the broader health care scale, thinking
- 7:26- about, you know, mergers, acquisitions,
- 7:28- what kind of,
- 7:30- you know, where how the landscape escape is
- 7:32- trending and shifting. And one of the big
- 7:34- pieces of news,
- 7:35- from early June has been that Ascension received
- 7:38- the FTC's approval to move forward with its
- 7:41- acquisition of AmSurge, but it does have to
- 7:45- sell some of the ASCs,
- 7:47- six ASCs in particular being divested
- 7:50- in order to move forward with the acquisition.
- 7:53- And so just finding that just interesting on
- 7:56- on how the FTC is thinking about things
- 7:58- and, what approvals it'll have, what what, you
- 8:02- know, that means for the ambulatory strategies of
- 8:04- other health systems going forward. Obviously, when it
- 8:06- was announced, this was a huge deal and
- 8:07- really seeing that Ascension is making investments in
- 8:10- outpatient and ASCs in particular and seeing that
- 8:13- as a huge part of their strategy for
- 8:15- the future. So,
- 8:17- that was another I I guess, big piece
- 8:18- of news coming through is that that ability
- 8:21- to approve the deal, but having to divest
- 8:23- some of those surgery centers in order to
- 8:24- get there.
- 8:26- No. That's fascinating. And currently, I think AMSURG
- 8:28- gets 250 plus surgery centers. Mhmm. So having
- 8:31- to get rid of six of them, you
- 8:33- know, never fall on, but I assume that's
- 8:35- a small price to pay to be able
- 8:36- to get the deal done.
- 8:38- I I think as I understand it that
- 8:39- when they combine with Ascension,
- 8:41- and I'm just looking at this, of course,
- 8:43- right now, it's still about 300 centers nationwide.
- 8:46- But, but but fascinating to see this, a
- 8:48- big part of the play of Ascension to
- 8:50- try and really become much more nimble and
- 8:52- much more ambulatory driven.
- 8:54- Fascinating leadership, great leadership, ascension. So fascinating to
- 8:57- watch how this all plays out.
- 8:59- Yep. Absolutely. It is it's just been, you
- 9:02- know, really interesting to hear,
- 9:04- the leaders talk about this and and think
- 9:06- through what is their strategy gonna be as
- 9:08- they're watching Ascension do this, other health systems,
- 9:10- you know, really leaning more into ambulatory. How
- 9:13- do they,
- 9:14- you know, how are they navigating? Are they
- 9:16- partnering? Are they trying to build their own
- 9:18- networks? What does it really take in order
- 9:20- to to smartly,
- 9:21- build an outpatient ambulatory strategy? So we're keeping
- 9:24- a close eye on that, and we'll continue
- 9:26- to see where the the industry goes.
- 9:30- Oh, truly fascinating. Thank you so much. Laura,
- 9:33- always great to visit with you. I always
- 9:34- learn something. I love getting a chance to
- 9:36- stay updated. I hope our audience does too.
- 9:38- Thank you so much for joining us. I'll
- 9:40- see you this week at both the, orthopedic
- 9:42- spine and pain management driven ASC conference,
- 9:45- plus the Becker's healthcare rural health care transformation
- 9:47- summit. So looking forward to visiting with you
- 9:49- both. Thank you. Thank you, Scott.
