- 0:02Speaker 1: Radio Radio Radio Commies a myth and Bullshit, a radio
- 0:16Speaker 1: phonic novella Local Radio hosted by Malamn. Welcome to season
- 0:22Speaker 1: four of Local Radio Wanted for Crimes against the Patriarchy.
- 0:29Speaker 1: We interrupt our regularly scheduled programming to bring you Quarantine Confidential,
- 0:34Speaker 1: a special pandemic cast about our experiences with quarantine and
- 0:39Speaker 1: COVID nineteen. I'm Ziosa, and our intention behind this mini
- 0:45Speaker 1: series is to archive our experiences and that of our
- 0:47Speaker 1: communities during this global coronavirus pandemic. Thank you for joining
- 0:53Speaker 1: us on this journey. Hello, welcome back. We're act again.
- 1:02Speaker 1: We're now a weekly podcast. Clearly it took like a
- 1:06Speaker 1: global pandemic for us, that's all it took. Podcast That's it.
- 1:11Speaker 1: That's all it took. Afterwards four years of podcasting, we're
- 1:14Speaker 1: now a weekly podcast. We finally figured it out. Um,
- 1:19Speaker 1: so we're bringing you more content than ever before, still
- 1:23Speaker 1: for free. Might I add? How did that happen? How
- 1:26Speaker 1: does that work? How do we double the amount of
- 1:29Speaker 1: content we put out? And it's still for a free bitch?
- 1:33Speaker 1: Because we are benevolent. Queen's Girl, We're penevolent, Such generous goddesses,
- 1:39Speaker 1: Jesus in Heaven. Listen, we're at the stage of the pandemic.
- 1:47Speaker 1: We're here on Zoom. We're interfucking like are with the hoodies?
- 1:53Speaker 1: We are cozy or comfy. Yeah, and we are still
- 1:58Speaker 1: bringing you contents. Okay, So well, how are you doing
- 2:03Speaker 1: since we last spoke? How are you doing? What's you
- 2:07Speaker 1: any changes? I mean since we last spoke. Um, I'm
- 2:12Speaker 1: just watching more and more things on Netflix. I'm finding
- 2:16Speaker 1: more and more things to organize, you know, so I'm
- 2:19Speaker 1: like breaking things up, like area by area, unit by unit.
- 2:22Speaker 1: And today what I focused on was like my jewelry
- 2:25Speaker 1: accessories and vanity area, all the little things, you know
- 2:29Speaker 1: what I mean. Um, And then tomorrow we're getting back
- 2:35Speaker 1: to work. We're getting back to school, but we're online.
- 2:37Speaker 1: We're doing distance learning. So it's been all about just
- 2:40Speaker 1: prepping and lesson planning because now we're an online school
- 2:45Speaker 1: all of a sudden, I hope, I hope. So especially
- 2:48Speaker 1: you get a bonus. Hell yeah, a pandemic bonus hasn't. Okay, Honestly,
- 2:57Speaker 1: everyone literally everyone should be getting hazard pat every single
- 3:01Speaker 1: person should be getting hazard pay. You should be getting
- 3:03Speaker 1: hazard pay. You're still going to work. I know it's
- 3:07Speaker 1: just too much. And what have you been up to
- 3:11Speaker 1: spending your time since last week you lasted out free content? Um,
- 3:18Speaker 1: I have been watching a lot of Marvel movies. So
- 3:22Speaker 1: I have not shared this on the podcast before, but
- 3:24Speaker 1: I am a really big fan of Marvel and I
- 3:26Speaker 1: like go to like the midnight PREMI years and all
- 3:28Speaker 1: of that. I do the whole thing, so I have,
- 3:31Speaker 1: but I have never wanted to learn. I know, I've
- 3:34Speaker 1: never watched the order, so I've been watching them in order,
- 3:38Speaker 1: and so I'm now I'm currently at aunt Man. I've
- 3:41Speaker 1: seen all the movies, but I'm watching them in order,
- 3:42Speaker 1: so I'm aunt aunt Man now and then I'm like
- 3:45Speaker 1: getting closer and closer to finishing. Um, so I've been
- 3:51Speaker 1: doing that. I've been hanging out with the hen a lot,
- 3:54Speaker 1: my yes, um, more so like than usual because obviously
- 3:59Speaker 1: I'm home and I have the time, so we have
- 4:02Speaker 1: been hanging out a lot. And my hands are extremely
- 4:06Speaker 1: dry for washing washing. I've noticed that, like I'm starting
- 4:11Speaker 1: to get cracks in my skin, like by my wrist area.
- 4:14Speaker 1: So I've been like putting the bombs on, like the
- 4:17Speaker 1: really thick creams. Can we talk about this? Can we
- 4:20Speaker 1: talk about bad bitch matenance in quarantine, the constant washing
- 4:25Speaker 1: of the hands, the constant washing of dishes, because like
- 4:28Speaker 1: spending home and cooking. Now I truly understand the value
- 4:33Speaker 1: of gloves and of the hand cream. I underestimated and
- 4:38Speaker 1: like took it all for granted before because I'm like,
- 4:40Speaker 1: this cannot do. I'm aging before my eyes. I'm so dry,
- 4:46Speaker 1: Like I feel dry like constantly, like all over. I
- 4:50Speaker 1: feel like I'm constantly having to moisturize more and just
- 4:53Speaker 1: like spripp my face with like a hydrosol. It's a lot.
- 4:57Speaker 1: I honestly one of my panic by eyes was all
- 5:03Speaker 1: of the like Umkorean sheet masks and the under eye
- 5:07Speaker 1: mask that I could carry, like I'm perfect stocked, all
- 5:12Speaker 1: the creams, all the elixirs. And I was reading this
- 5:16Speaker 1: article the other day about you know, there is an
- 5:20Speaker 1: increase in sales and all these cleaning products, but many
- 5:22Speaker 1: of them are super toxic and we're cleaning all day now,
- 5:28Speaker 1: and like are we doing damage to ourselves in an
- 5:31Speaker 1: attempt to clean? I know, like today I was life
- 5:35Speaker 1: sawing things and I just felt myself breathing all the fumes,
- 5:41Speaker 1: and I was like, well that can't be good, but
- 5:43Speaker 1: it is what it is. I'm like spraying things, you know,
- 5:45Speaker 1: I'm disinfecting. So yeah, I mean, I guess I can
- 5:48Speaker 1: put a mask on, but it just seems like a
- 5:51Speaker 1: waste of a mask. I don't know, like in your
- 5:54Speaker 1: own home, in my home. Yeah, I don't know. We'll
- 5:57Speaker 1: see what I do. But yeah, been noticing that the
- 6:01Speaker 1: dryness of the hands, um my face got dry. Yeah.
- 6:08Speaker 1: I'm very aware of like my body and how I'm feeling.
- 6:12Speaker 1: Like I'm like, oh my god, it is my throat,
- 6:14Speaker 1: so am I like in my feverish. I've been like
- 6:17Speaker 1: taking my temperature daily and I'm like, it's just anxiety
- 6:20Speaker 1: that I'm feeling. Um, you know, And I think many
- 6:23Speaker 1: of us are feeling that right now, where it's like
- 6:25Speaker 1: any sudden like pain, kneeze, cough, We're like, oh my god,
- 6:31Speaker 1: this is it. Yeah. I agree, And I like go
- 6:35Speaker 1: to sleep every day because any time I've ever been sick,
- 6:38Speaker 1: I knew why I was sick in the morning. I
- 6:40Speaker 1: got sick in the morning, I woke up and I
- 6:41Speaker 1: was sick, right, And so I go to sleep and
- 6:44Speaker 1: then it makes my sleeping very anxious. And I'm doing
- 6:48Speaker 1: lots and turning because I'm thinking, like, and then we
- 6:51Speaker 1: see on Twitter, willke up with the fever, woke up
- 6:53Speaker 1: with this, We'll up with that. So I anticipate waking
- 6:57Speaker 1: up and how I'm going to feel in the morning.
- 7:00Speaker 1: And that has been talking with me. That's just a
- 7:03Speaker 1: quarantine thing, just real pandemic things. That's all right, okay.
- 7:08Speaker 1: And then talk about trying to be a bad bitch
- 7:10Speaker 1: during these times, right, Like, you know how I can't
- 7:14Speaker 1: get our nails done. People are like buying their own
- 7:17Speaker 1: kids so they can do their nails at home, which
- 7:18Speaker 1: I think is smart. My dilemma right now is that
- 7:21Speaker 1: I have the gelic snails, and if you take them
- 7:24Speaker 1: off incorrectly, you can rip your actual nail off. Yeah,
- 7:28Speaker 1: it's not like the acrylics. So I'm just like, I
- 7:30Speaker 1: don't know. I'm going to attempt to do like the
- 7:33Speaker 1: acidtone soak and just see what I can do. And
- 7:36Speaker 1: I'm not like invested in taking them off for that reason.
- 7:39Speaker 1: Not because I'm trying to keep them longer, you know,
- 7:41Speaker 1: or make them last longer, but I just don't want
- 7:44Speaker 1: to rip my real nail off, you know, because it's
- 7:48Speaker 1: like this bad bitch maintenance is actually low key dangerous.
- 7:52Speaker 1: The nails stuff. You cannot be ripping your nails off, right,
- 7:56Speaker 1: the little tools and things that are all like little
- 7:59Speaker 1: like heavy machinery that they use on the nails right there,
- 8:03Speaker 1: relics um women that have their hair dyed and colored
- 8:08Speaker 1: and bleached and stuff. You can't be bleaching your own
- 8:10Speaker 1: hair at home and ship. No. I did my own
- 8:13Speaker 1: like toning yesterday. My hairstyle is dropped off. She did
- 8:17Speaker 1: a no contact drop off, so she just left me
- 8:19Speaker 1: like my toner and like a little developer. And then
- 8:22Speaker 1: I just like literally just you know, put it all
- 8:24Speaker 1: over my head and like let it sit, and um,
- 8:28Speaker 1: well my hair is not brassy anymore, so that's good.
- 8:31Speaker 1: Over zoom, Like the picture quality is not true to life,
- 8:34Speaker 1: but it looks rich and lovely, thank god. Okay, yeah, yeah,
- 8:40Speaker 1: you know it just throw back to that time I
- 8:42Speaker 1: tried to be a blonde in the summer, like summers ago.
- 8:46Speaker 1: That was fun and I'm still paying for it because
- 8:48Speaker 1: the blonde is like still tries to come out. Yeah.
- 8:52Speaker 1: Bleaching is so harsh, it is, it really is. What
- 8:57Speaker 1: else have we been doing watching things? Tiger King? Can
- 9:00Speaker 1: we discuss for a quick sect. Okay, Yeah, So I
- 9:04Speaker 1: was really hesitant to watch Tiger King because I just
- 9:06Speaker 1: cannot watch. I mean, I don't think anyone can, right,
- 9:09Speaker 1: but it's just like I get a very viscual reaction
- 9:11Speaker 1: from seeing any animal of these. So I was really
- 9:14Speaker 1: really stressed out of watching it. I was like, no, like,
- 9:16Speaker 1: I just it's not something for me. There's just no
- 9:19Speaker 1: point in even trying. But I will say that the
- 9:22Speaker 1: meme's got me, like, I wanted to understand what was happening.
- 9:27Speaker 1: So I watched it last night and I literally bench
- 9:30Speaker 1: watched it with my fotimo. We just spent the entire
- 9:34Speaker 1: night watching it. Start to finish thoughts. White people are crazy.
- 9:39Speaker 1: Number one, White people are sucking. Um, I realized now,
- 9:48Speaker 1: or I was telling my partner, was like, see, my
- 9:50Speaker 1: leopard obsession is not that bad. Like, look at these people.
- 9:54Speaker 1: Look at how they're dressed, wearing leopard right now and
- 9:58Speaker 1: wearing a leopard grow and I left her chunk less
- 10:00Speaker 1: on and her nails are leopard your acrylic males or
- 10:04Speaker 1: leopard print, and your chunk laws are leopard print, and
- 10:07Speaker 1: your robe is leopard. Yeah, but like look at Carol,
- 10:12Speaker 1: I'm not Carol. Okay, maybe I'm Carol adjacent, but I'm
- 10:17Speaker 1: not killing I would not kill my husband. Carol Light
- 10:21Speaker 1: Carol Light hers Oh my god. Yeah, I was just
- 10:25Speaker 1: dying because you know, the meme about Carol feeding her
- 10:29Speaker 1: husband to the tigers, like, definitely got me. Yep, yep,
- 10:34Speaker 1: I think you probably did it, did too, she definitely
- 10:38Speaker 1: fed him to the tigers. Yes, I agree, I agree.
- 10:42Speaker 1: And then just the whole Joe thing was Joe is
- 10:46Speaker 1: the is a scary, messy man. Yeah, Joe was a
- 10:49Speaker 1: bad man. He was he was boys. What's his name? Yeah, okay.
- 10:57Speaker 1: One of my takeaways Travis and no not Um, the
- 11:02Speaker 1: first husband I can't remember what his name was with
- 11:04Speaker 1: no team. Okay. My first thought. My first thought was
- 11:10Speaker 1: all this money and you can buy your husband teeth.
- 11:14Speaker 1: That was my first I saw this fool. I was like, damn,
- 11:17Speaker 1: you can even buy your husband teeth Like Souveneers, Joe
- 11:23Speaker 1: Exotic and all these people trafficking wild exotic animals, they
- 11:27Speaker 1: were moving lots of money, they were They really were
- 11:31Speaker 1: tons of money, right, Jo Exotic was an abuser and
- 11:36Speaker 1: those poor boys were his victim. I agree. And also
- 11:39Speaker 1: like Doc with his cult of women literally literally a
- 11:46Speaker 1: cult of women. He made them and he changed their names.
- 11:49Speaker 1: He made them get breast in plans. They worked from
- 11:52Speaker 1: eight am to midnight and they made like a hundred
- 11:55Speaker 1: dollars a week with the big cats. It was crazy.
- 11:59Speaker 1: And like another thought that I had was like every
- 12:02Speaker 1: single man that they showed that was one of these
- 12:05Speaker 1: like exotic tiger or exotic animal owners. Like how really
- 12:10Speaker 1: beautiful women like they're multi women and partners were young
- 12:16Speaker 1: and like extremely beautiful and these men were creepy and ugly.
- 12:20Speaker 1: And I'll get it. I'll get it, dude. But again,
- 12:24Speaker 1: and serial killers get murdered. Now, no serial killers get married.
- 12:28Speaker 1: I should say I'm death row. You know what I mean? True? Right,
- 12:32Speaker 1: Like we talked about this when we talked about what's
- 12:34Speaker 1: his name, Richard Ramirez. Yes, the cult of personality, like
- 12:38Speaker 1: women love a powerful man even if he's like super terrible.
- 12:44Speaker 1: It's horrible. I do not understand it, but very entertaining television. Yes,
- 12:50Speaker 1: And there was the one Latino drug drug lord who
- 12:54Speaker 1: also was involved, and I was like wow, represent I know,
- 12:58Speaker 1: I know, I was like I know in Miami. I
- 13:01Speaker 1: was like I cannot. And he was also a lunatic.
- 13:06Speaker 1: He was like, what do I tell the police that
- 13:08Speaker 1: I didn't chop up this man? Yes? Do I tell
- 13:12Speaker 1: them I wasn't the one to do it. I was there,
- 13:14Speaker 1: So what does it matter? Yeah, all right, Just I
- 13:20Speaker 1: didn't realize that these people existed. I didn't realize this
- 13:23Speaker 1: was a thing or a word. I didn't realize our
- 13:28Speaker 1: scope of like people in community, you know. And also
- 13:34Speaker 1: so there's all these lions and tigers and exotic animals
- 13:37Speaker 1: just in regular houses all across the country because they
- 13:40Speaker 1: were selling tons um big cats. Yeah, like in the South,
- 13:48Speaker 1: my dad because they feel because my um my partner
- 13:52Speaker 1: was watching it with us, and he was like, what
- 13:54Speaker 1: did I say? I was. I was like, oh, there's
- 13:57Speaker 1: something like it seems like this is just in the South,
- 14:00Speaker 1: And not to say that they aren't any here. Maybe
- 14:01Speaker 1: there are and we just don't know. But he was like, yeah, no,
- 14:03Speaker 1: that ship wouldn't happen here, And I was like, well,
- 14:05Speaker 1: would it not happen or is it? There's just not
- 14:07Speaker 1: the same amount of space as like in the South,
- 14:10Speaker 1: where you have these giant homes with all of this
- 14:12Speaker 1: property acres and acres, and then you can literally have
- 14:17Speaker 1: a tiger or a liger, a lion, an actual lion, never,
- 14:22Speaker 1: whatever the fuck it was like it blew my mind.
- 14:25Speaker 1: It blew my mind. And also that there's no like
- 14:27Speaker 1: it doesn't surprise me again because this is our country,
- 14:31Speaker 1: but like there's no regulation, there's no rules, there's no laws.
- 14:35Speaker 1: That's like you would think. Piece that was shocking to me,
- 14:39Speaker 1: which was like something that was sure at the very
- 14:41Speaker 1: beginning of the series was that there are more of
- 14:44Speaker 1: these animals in captivity than in the wild. And so
- 14:51Speaker 1: what got to me is like you have this, it's
- 14:54Speaker 1: and the fact that it's a subculture, right, the subculture
- 14:58Speaker 1: of people who own all of these captive lions and
- 15:03Speaker 1: tigers and stuff, and more than there are in the wild,
- 15:06Speaker 1: and just the colonialism of it all and the enslavement
- 15:09Speaker 1: of it all, and it's just it's it's beyond even words,
- 15:13Speaker 1: like a big picture piece of all of it, you know,
- 15:17Speaker 1: aside from the internal like wild ship that they were
- 15:21Speaker 1: all doing, and the murder and the crime and the
- 15:23Speaker 1: abuse and the drugs and the like, aside even even
- 15:27Speaker 1: beyond that, just the big picture pieces like these people
- 15:32Speaker 1: maintain the world's population of blinds and tigers, it's it's
- 15:38Speaker 1: it is truly astounding, and I understand why everyone is
- 15:44Speaker 1: talking about it right now because it is more because
- 15:48Speaker 1: I remember when you texted me about it, you were
- 15:50Speaker 1: telling you were like trying to explain it to me,
- 15:52Speaker 1: but you couldn't. I couldn't, like, oh, because like I
- 15:55Speaker 1: actually thought it was like my perception was that it
- 15:58Speaker 1: was about I didn't when I heard Tiger King, I
- 16:01Speaker 1: thought it was about people that like poach tigers, like
- 16:05Speaker 1: kill them and then they like you know, use their
- 16:07Speaker 1: fur and all of that. So I didn't. I didn't
- 16:09Speaker 1: understand that it was about kept like captive exotic animals,
- 16:14Speaker 1: and so I just I gave in and I watched
- 16:17Speaker 1: it and now aged on all of the memes. And
- 16:22Speaker 1: for anyone watching, you know, this is like a Netflix series. Yes,
- 16:26Speaker 1: it's like a docuseries. Um about this subculture of people
- 16:30Speaker 1: who would like own and um breed and sell big
- 16:37Speaker 1: cats and exotic animals and have private zoos. And to
- 16:40Speaker 1: be quite frank, they're like swamp people, you know, like
- 16:45Speaker 1: swamp people, like backwoods people, and I think they'd probably
- 16:49Speaker 1: describe themselves the same, like gun toting bucking mullets like
- 16:56Speaker 1: mega Trump supporters, oh proudly. Yeah, even when Joe was
- 17:02Speaker 1: when he was running for governor Lord Pahoma. Okay, it
- 17:07Speaker 1: was ridiculous, right, and it was obviously comedic. But then
- 17:09Speaker 1: if you think about the way Trump was running, and
- 17:12Speaker 1: it was that was very much the conversation in the beginning, right,
- 17:15Speaker 1: it was like, he's not going to be elected. He's
- 17:17Speaker 1: not going to make it to the primary. It's like,
- 17:19Speaker 1: it's not gonna make it that far. And then he did.
- 17:21Speaker 1: And so then when you see the when you see
- 17:23Speaker 1: Tiger Can, you see the docuseries, and then you start
- 17:26Speaker 1: to see people actually supporting Joe and like, oh yeah,
- 17:28Speaker 1: I think that you know, he's he's eccentric, but he's
- 17:31Speaker 1: like he can make a difference in this and this
- 17:33Speaker 1: and that he represents me. And I was like, wow,
- 17:35Speaker 1: these are these are those people. M hmm, this is
- 17:39Speaker 1: the exact same one. This is how Trump got e
- 17:41Speaker 1: looked it. Yeah, crazy things. I mean, we California, we
- 17:46Speaker 1: elected Arnold Schwartzenegger. It's not that crazy. It's a thing.
- 17:52Speaker 1: It's a fucking thing. So Tiger King we've been watching today,
- 17:55Speaker 1: I binge watched this series, a limited series on Netflix
- 17:58Speaker 1: called Unorthodox so good about UM. You know, ultra they're
- 18:05Speaker 1: called ultra orthodox like Jews in like Jews, Yeah, in Glammsburg.
- 18:11Speaker 1: And UM. The main character, the protagonist, you know, right
- 18:15Speaker 1: away from the beginning, she escapes her community and like
- 18:18Speaker 1: gets a secret passport and flees and then they like
- 18:22Speaker 1: send people to try and find her. And it's like
- 18:24Speaker 1: a whole thing. And it's based on a true story
- 18:26Speaker 1: a woman who left her um ultra conservative, ultra orthodox
- 18:33Speaker 1: Jewish community in Williamsburg and wrote a biography about it,
- 18:37Speaker 1: like the country, and it's a whole thing. Yeah, so
- 18:39Speaker 1: I highly recommend watching. It's so good talk about feminist abuse,
- 18:45Speaker 1: like survival story. This definitely I'm like consistently like one
- 18:50Speaker 1: show behind you, like you watched the series and I'm
- 18:53Speaker 1: just like starting it, you know, Okay, this will be
- 18:57Speaker 1: what I had, what I watched next. But anyway, going
- 19:00Speaker 1: back to like the Netflix series UM, I just finished
- 19:03Speaker 1: on my block too, like a week or two ago.
- 19:08Speaker 1: Season three, Season three, Okay, I loved it. Obviously, I
- 19:17Speaker 1: have issues with the ending, like I think a lot
- 19:20Speaker 1: of people do. Like, wait, I just invested three seasons
- 19:24Speaker 1: and this is when you're gonna end this time? You know, Um,
- 19:30Speaker 1: so I'm interested to see, Like I hope I haven't
- 19:33Speaker 1: heard yet if it has got renewed for a fourth season.
- 19:35Speaker 1: I hope it does. Though, I hope that wasn't like
- 19:37Speaker 1: a way of them like being like, Okay, we're done
- 19:39Speaker 1: with the story, because I feel like it's just getting started.
- 19:42Speaker 1: Um yeah. And I mean aside from the representation piece
- 19:48Speaker 1: of you know, representing like young like teenagers of color
- 19:52Speaker 1: and they're coming of age stories, I think it would
- 19:55Speaker 1: be cool to also see them like transition from um
- 19:58Speaker 1: high school to college, you know, and like what that
- 20:02Speaker 1: process would be like if they even have that kind
- 20:05Speaker 1: of process. Like I don't know, like maybe Caesar is
- 20:08Speaker 1: more delayed in that because the way that the episode,
- 20:11Speaker 1: the season finale ends, you know. I don't know. I
- 20:15Speaker 1: feel like there's just a lot to play with, so
- 20:17Speaker 1: we'll see, I guess. Over your thoughts, I just felt
- 20:20Speaker 1: like I felt like Caesar was resisting in some ways
- 20:26Speaker 1: that yeah, heavily getting involved trajectory. Like I thought it
- 20:33Speaker 1: was a dramatic leap from the Caesar that we were
- 20:37Speaker 1: seeing throughout the season to like that final image of him,
- 20:42Speaker 1: like watching if someone's getting jumped and he's like completely bald,
- 20:45Speaker 1: and it's he looks very menacing. I just thought it
- 20:49Speaker 1: was super sudden, it was jarring. I thought that there
- 20:53Speaker 1: was Yeah, I thought that there was like some foreshadowing
- 20:57Speaker 1: of that when he's at the motel or the hotel
- 21:01Speaker 1: or wherever with his monset and she's like, oh, but
- 21:04Speaker 1: it's just this one time, right, She like sees him
- 21:07Speaker 1: like preparing the gun and like putting in the bullets,
- 21:11Speaker 1: and then she's like, I feel like she's looking at
- 21:13Speaker 1: him differently. Yeah, And so I feel like that was
- 21:16Speaker 1: the foreshadow of like, Okay, he's going to like go
- 21:19Speaker 1: down this path, you know, and then you see like
- 21:22Speaker 1: a different side of smooky. Spooky are wonderful, wonderful king.
- 21:30Speaker 1: I love him. I know I pointed this out the
- 21:35Speaker 1: actor who was a very talented actor. But we like him,
- 21:39Speaker 1: miss Spooky. You like him as spooky. I think he's
- 21:41Speaker 1: actually married to a white woman. This is what you have, Yes,
- 21:45Speaker 1: this is I think I said this multiple times because
- 21:48Speaker 1: I put out every time he comes out. Every time
- 21:52Speaker 1: the bather's me, Okay, excellent performance though, the prettiest Shillow
- 21:57Speaker 1: I have ever seen in my life. So fine, let
- 22:00Speaker 1: me say, let me say, growing up, I feel like
- 22:04Speaker 1: the look for guys very much was having their eyebrows done.
- 22:09Speaker 1: There were some thin, finely manicured like dudes growing up,
- 22:15Speaker 1: you know what I mean. In addition to all these
- 22:17Speaker 1: fabulous series that we've been watching on Netflix, of course,
- 22:20Speaker 1: we've been watching Himpified, UM killing the game. They're opening weekends,
- 22:26Speaker 1: they're opening week they were top ten on Netflix, you
- 22:30Speaker 1: know for a few days, held strong, um, super positive reception.
- 22:35Speaker 1: You and I went to the premiere and I love
- 22:38Speaker 1: the show. I've seen it twice now, I've streamed it.
- 22:41Speaker 1: I've seen it twice as well. Um, I'm trying to
- 22:44Speaker 1: stream it a third time to watch it with my mom.
- 22:46Speaker 1: I want her to see it and if as I
- 22:49Speaker 1: really loved the series, and I really hope that Netflix
- 22:52Speaker 1: reen use it for a second season. Um. There's just
- 22:57Speaker 1: so much good storytelling in Hintified. M H and UM. Well,
- 23:03Speaker 1: we have the immense privilege of being able to talk
- 23:06Speaker 1: to the creators today and so we're going to bring
- 23:09Speaker 1: them on for the second half of this episode and
- 23:11Speaker 1: like a really dramatic turnaround. We went to the premiere
- 23:14Speaker 1: at Bassa. We saw Marvin there, we saw Linda there, Um.
- 23:18Speaker 1: We have interviews with them in the second half of
- 23:21Speaker 1: this episode. It's a long interview. We talked for a
- 23:23Speaker 1: very long time about um opening week, you know, the
- 23:28Speaker 1: process making up inspirations behind Hentified, and then the experience
- 23:32Speaker 1: that they've had since the opening and since the careere Um.
- 23:36Speaker 1: One of the writers on the show tragically passed away
- 23:39Speaker 1: like a day or two after the premiere. Then shortly
- 23:43Speaker 1: after that we went into quarantine lockdown mode. So it's
- 23:46Speaker 1: been a very bittersweet sort of you know, opening for them,
- 23:49Speaker 1: and we're going to talk to them about it. So
- 23:51Speaker 1: before we do that, we just want to read bios
- 23:53Speaker 1: for Marvin and Linda to get you all acquainted. Yeah. So.
- 23:56Speaker 1: Marvin Lemouse is an award winning screenwriter, director, and producer
- 24:00Speaker 1: with a passion for telling unapologetic stories. Most recently, Lemus
- 24:04Speaker 1: co created and directed Hint Defied, a bilingual digital series
- 24:08Speaker 1: executive produced by America Federa and macro Hnified premiered at
- 24:12Speaker 1: the Sundance Film Festival and is now in production as
- 24:16Speaker 1: a half hour dramatic comedy for Netflix. Linda Yvette Chavez
- 24:22Speaker 1: is an award winning check on a screenwriter, producer, and director.
- 24:26Speaker 1: She co created Netflix's much anticipated series Hentified with Marvin Lemus.
- 24:32Speaker 1: What started as a digital series that premiered at the
- 24:35Speaker 1: seventeen Sundance Film Festival grew into a TV series at
- 24:39Speaker 1: the center of the six network bidding war that found
- 24:42Speaker 1: its home with the good people of Netflix Radio. All right, look,
- 24:52Speaker 1: so we are super excited to be joined by Marvin
- 24:56Speaker 1: and then David Chaves, creators of HINTEFI. Hey, y'all, Hey up,
- 25:04Speaker 1: what up? Thank you both so much for joining us today. Um,
- 25:08Speaker 1: we are recording direct from Quarantine Part two. Damn Quarantine queens. Yes, uh,
- 25:22Speaker 1: studio space is now at home, which is cute and um,
- 25:26Speaker 1: where all joining us from? Where are you all? Right now?
- 25:29Speaker 1: I am in knock. I'm at my parents house right
- 25:32Speaker 1: now making sure that he does don't get out. You know.
- 25:34Speaker 1: I put a little I put up a little fence
- 25:37Speaker 1: around them. I gave them some food and water, and
- 25:39Speaker 1: I'm like, no, necesar, I got you all. No, Because
- 25:43Speaker 1: they're both like in their sixties. My dad's about to
- 25:45Speaker 1: turn seventy in a few months. Like, you know, they're helping.
- 25:48Speaker 1: They're helping my dad, you know. So he's all about
- 25:51Speaker 1: that like work life. But as a not to day,
- 25:55Speaker 1: not today. So I'm gonna walk cross tape on every day. Right,
- 26:03Speaker 1: I'm in my bedroom in my bed over City. I've
- 26:08Speaker 1: been out here for you know, five years, six years technically,
- 26:12Speaker 1: I mean I've been on the West Side now since
- 26:14Speaker 1: I moved down here from after high school. So I
- 26:16Speaker 1: lift I used to live like less than a mile
- 26:18Speaker 1: away from here when I was in college. I left
- 26:21Speaker 1: for like a year, and then I moved in with
- 26:22Speaker 1: a girl, and now I'm here. And you, Marvin, are
- 26:27Speaker 1: originally from Bakersfield. Yes, I am from Bakersfield. Yes, from
- 26:31Speaker 1: the desert of Bakersfield. We're gonna talk about Bakersfield more.
- 26:35Speaker 1: We're gonna talk about that. That's why because are you
- 26:37Speaker 1: you you have family from there, right, are you? Yeah?
- 26:41Speaker 1: My family is in Bakersfield right now. My dad is
- 26:43Speaker 1: from Bakersfield. He grew up. I went to East Bakersfield
- 26:48Speaker 1: High work as a child, picked cotton in grapes, was
- 26:53Speaker 1: in the uf W at fourteen. My dad's like, you
- 26:59Speaker 1: know that life like just like coming home and then
- 27:01Speaker 1: there's just like you know, like twenty cases of grapes
- 27:04Speaker 1: and so I'm gonna get through this, Like what is
- 27:08Speaker 1: like because we still have family that works in agriculture, um,
- 27:12Speaker 1: in the fields and stuff, and so people are always
- 27:14Speaker 1: giving us fruits. There's always fruits. My grandma, I grew up.
- 27:18Speaker 1: My grandma worked for the longest she worked at bolt
- 27:21Speaker 1: House Farms and she packed carrots. So she worked in
- 27:24Speaker 1: the factory packing all the baggies of carrots. So I
- 27:27Speaker 1: come and I didn't like carrots growing up. So we
- 27:29Speaker 1: just always had a bunch of cares. And I was like,
- 27:30Speaker 1: I don't know what I'm gonna do with always carrots
- 27:31Speaker 1: grow up because I can't. I don't like this. Yeah,
- 27:34Speaker 1: a lot of carrots, I suck them up. But anyways, yea,
- 27:37Speaker 1: so I know that. Yeah, And it's I feel like
- 27:40Speaker 1: a lot of people in l A have some type
- 27:43Speaker 1: of family or connection in the San Joaquin Valley. And
- 27:47Speaker 1: whether it's extended family, neighbors, your grandparents would have you
- 27:51Speaker 1: in laws, there's really something there, you know. Um, there's
- 27:57Speaker 1: a big relationship historically and it comes up throughout hand
- 28:00Speaker 1: to fid in the show Bakersfield just dropped all over
- 28:04Speaker 1: the place, you know, and it's part of it's part
- 28:06Speaker 1: of the storyline. Also, Yeah, I mean, uh we there's
- 28:11Speaker 1: a lot of jokes at Bakersfield's expense. And I mean
- 28:15Speaker 1: in my family, we just talked a lot and that's
- 28:17Speaker 1: our love language. So I was like, I'm gonna put
- 28:19Speaker 1: as many bakers or references in here that there there's
- 28:23Speaker 1: a lot of little love taps from Marvin towards Baker's
- 28:27Speaker 1: people talk to like why are they talking about Bakersfield.
- 28:29Speaker 1: I was like, I don't know, talk to Marvin here
- 28:33Speaker 1: talking because growing up we would just like we would
- 28:37Speaker 1: talk a lot of ship about bakers are like living
- 28:40Speaker 1: there because it was it's Bakersfield, it's every sup, there's
- 28:44Speaker 1: nothing to do. We would just like all the cool
- 28:47Speaker 1: stuff was like you even needed to have money for it,
- 28:50Speaker 1: or it would be like you know, during or we
- 28:53Speaker 1: would just end up hanging out in parking lots a lot,
- 28:55Speaker 1: like there's literally nothing going on out there. It's just
- 28:59Speaker 1: but we just a lot of ship about Bakersfield. And
- 29:01Speaker 1: so I wanted to put that into the show. And
- 29:03Speaker 1: like you said, there is such a relationship and everybody
- 29:05Speaker 1: in bakers who has family in l a family Bakersfield.
- 29:09Speaker 1: I grew up moving back and forth between the two
- 29:11Speaker 1: a lot, and so it just made it was just
- 29:14Speaker 1: very natural to insert it in there especially. I mean,
- 29:17Speaker 1: the show deals with gentrification and people being displaced and moving,
- 29:20Speaker 1: and Bakersfield is one of the spots that people like,
- 29:23Speaker 1: we're finding a lot of him. They are leaving and
- 29:25Speaker 1: moving out to Bakersfield and Lancaster and now to like,
- 29:29Speaker 1: you know, the Mohammy Valty, like a Mohabi desert and
- 29:31Speaker 1: like por those levels like really far, you know, and
- 29:34Speaker 1: like all these places that like I've been to all
- 29:36Speaker 1: these other spots and every time I go, I'm like, yo,
- 29:38Speaker 1: this is just like Bakersfield. Like it's all save if
- 29:41Speaker 1: you've been a riverside, it's like Bakersfield, it's the same.
- 29:46Speaker 1: So um, it just felt like natural to weave all
- 29:50Speaker 1: that out. Yeah, And I felt like it was then
- 29:53Speaker 1: very seamlessly. I said, I told my parents watched this show,
- 29:56Speaker 1: and my dad was so excited, and he they're they're
- 29:59Speaker 1: in Bakersfiel right now. They watched it over there. He
- 30:01Speaker 1: was excited. And when he's been like telling people about
- 30:04Speaker 1: the show, he's been doing promo for the show, he's
- 30:06Speaker 1: like watching the show hand the back. We talk about Bakersfield.
- 30:12Speaker 1: Love Bigger has come after you. They like they did
- 30:16Speaker 1: interviews with Marvin the like hometown hero over here because
- 30:20Speaker 1: we don't have a lot. We got corn like the
- 30:22Speaker 1: band and and Valley Fever. Valley Fever. What's Valley Fever? Oh,
- 30:30Speaker 1: just Valley Fever like that. I thought it was like
- 30:31Speaker 1: a band. I was like, that's a good band name. No,
- 30:34Speaker 1: like the like the fever that is in the soil
- 30:36Speaker 1: and baker that band to deitely is really that's that's
- 30:44Speaker 1: a good name. Yeah, that's a good name. Yeah, I
- 30:48Speaker 1: really thought you were referencing a band. Mala. You know,
- 30:52Speaker 1: Bakersfield is like the epicenter of the world for Valley Fever,
- 30:57Speaker 1: and it's a lot of people get it or like
- 31:01Speaker 1: have it, but it's like dormant. They just are asymptomatic.
- 31:04Speaker 1: Talking about the fast paces. Like when I go home
- 31:06Speaker 1: and I legit, like the first day, I'm like, oh,
- 31:09Speaker 1: this is so nice, Like there's like it's just so slow,
- 31:12Speaker 1: like this time just like completely slows down. And then
- 31:15Speaker 1: by the second day, I'm like I'm ready to go home,
- 31:17Speaker 1: Like there's just like I'm over it. I'm bored. I'm
- 31:19Speaker 1: so bored. Oh yeah. I tell my family like, oh,
- 31:23Speaker 1: you know, they visit and be like it's gonna be
- 31:25Speaker 1: twenty minutes to go to this place, and they'd be
- 31:26Speaker 1: like twenty minutes and I'm like, yeah, it's real, fass
- 31:29Speaker 1: were like that that's how long it takes to get
- 31:33Speaker 1: across town, like like multiple towns, And I'm just like, oh, damn,
- 31:38Speaker 1: like that's real. That is real. Yeah, But we got
- 31:42Speaker 1: love for Bakersfield, bread basket of the world. They feed us,
- 31:46Speaker 1: holding down my family, be like hater. But that's the thing,
- 31:56Speaker 1: Like I love bakers like it's well, as an adult,
- 31:59Speaker 1: I used to really hate Bakersfield, like like I was trying.
- 32:02Speaker 1: I worked, I worked as hard as I have to
- 32:05Speaker 1: make sure I didn't have to move back to Bakersfield,
- 32:06Speaker 1: you know what I mean. Well, as an adult and
- 32:10Speaker 1: especially working on this show and around Ball Heights in
- 32:15Speaker 1: a community that like fights for themselves, like they fight
- 32:18Speaker 1: for their their their neighborhood, They fight for their community,
- 32:20Speaker 1: love themselves so much. And I think for me, that
- 32:22Speaker 1: was definitely a huge part of that job. Just like damn,
- 32:25Speaker 1: like I don't have that, Like I don't have that
- 32:26Speaker 1: in my life. I don't have that kind of like
- 32:28Speaker 1: love where I'm out here being like like Bakersfield, like
- 32:30Speaker 1: repping them that art and I've learned. I've learned it, and
- 32:33Speaker 1: and I've learned to love that because it's also just
- 32:35Speaker 1: another part of the self love in this sense, right
- 32:37Speaker 1: and being able to be like, no, this is where
- 32:38Speaker 1: I'm from and I love them and they made me.
- 32:40Speaker 1: You know. Um so Bakersfield, I love you. I'm sorry
- 32:44Speaker 1: I talked so much shit. I mean, listen the way
- 32:48Speaker 1: they get, the way things are going in l A,
- 32:52Speaker 1: we all might have to move to Bakersfield. So let
- 32:56Speaker 1: me when the bridge is well, like, you gotta house
- 33:02Speaker 1: out there. I just I wanted to make sure because like,
- 33:06Speaker 1: but no, I really do anyway anyway, But yeah, but
- 33:08Speaker 1: we're but Bakersfield, bakers we all love Bakersfield, right, so
- 33:14Speaker 1: we're like, yeah, so we're like a month post release
- 33:19Speaker 1: of Hentified and also your premier Rasa, which let me
- 33:23Speaker 1: just say, we love that y'all had your premiere there
- 33:27Speaker 1: because we're not from we're not from the West Side.
- 33:31Speaker 1: We don't venture out to the West Side unless like
- 33:33Speaker 1: we have to go to meetings or we go to events.
- 33:36Speaker 1: So to have your Netflix premiere on the East Side
- 33:39Speaker 1: was really special to us as like community members and
- 33:43Speaker 1: also you know, podcasters and artists and all of that. Um,
- 33:47Speaker 1: like I in high school. Growing up, I attended to
- 33:51Speaker 1: writing workshops at blas Lar Rassa, and I know Mala
- 33:54Speaker 1: has a connection with too, so like it just felt
- 33:57Speaker 1: so nice and special, and I just want to like
- 34:00Speaker 1: want to tell y'all that that did not go unnoticed
- 34:02Speaker 1: for like us as community members, and it was so dope,
- 34:05Speaker 1: you know, everything was amazing. So I just want to
- 34:08Speaker 1: put that out there. Thank you. Oh God, you didn't know.
- 34:11Speaker 1: That means so much to us, because we really were
- 34:14Speaker 1: very intentional from I mean two years ago when we
- 34:17Speaker 1: first got you know, picked up, we were like, this,
- 34:19Speaker 1: our premier is going to be in the community. Like
- 34:21Speaker 1: from day one, we had like a vision for what
- 34:24Speaker 1: we wanted it to be. And there are so many
- 34:26Speaker 1: things that we put out to our team and Netflix
- 34:27Speaker 1: from the start to we kind of laid the foundation
- 34:30Speaker 1: with everyone like this is what we want, this is
- 34:31Speaker 1: our vision, Like this is about the community, and like
- 34:34Speaker 1: it was so beautiful to see that things that we
- 34:36Speaker 1: had planted months and months before and even years before,
- 34:39Speaker 1: Like people on our team showed up and they were like,
- 34:42Speaker 1: so we're gonna have the premiere in the community, and
- 34:44Speaker 1: we're like Oh, we are amazing, Thank you for listening
- 34:47Speaker 1: to us, like it that's awesome, Like it just it
- 34:49Speaker 1: means so much for us for it to be accessible
- 34:52Speaker 1: to the community, for it to be about the community,
- 34:55Speaker 1: and for it to be I don't know, like for
- 34:58Speaker 1: it to feel like home, like partying with with the familia,
- 35:01Speaker 1: with everybody that we we live and hole daring. It's
- 35:02Speaker 1: so crazy as you were talking about, like as community members.
- 35:05Speaker 1: As we were there, I remember my sisters or my
- 35:07Speaker 1: sister works for labor unions. There's a little lot of
- 35:10Speaker 1: works of feed feed families and all that, and she
- 35:13Speaker 1: was there and there was a bunch of people that
- 35:14Speaker 1: she had worked with that she was like, this is
- 35:16Speaker 1: my sister. And for her to introduced me like she
- 35:19Speaker 1: made the show that is here, that is like there
- 35:21Speaker 1: was something about that moment for me that felt like, yeah,
- 35:24Speaker 1: like we're all in this together. We're all family, we're
- 35:26Speaker 1: all we're all We created this not for Hollywood. We
- 35:30Speaker 1: didn't create this for a bunch of celebrities. We created
- 35:32Speaker 1: this for our people and that's who should be here.
- 35:34Speaker 1: Um So so if we appre I appreciate hearing that,
- 35:37Speaker 1: that means a lot to me. It was refreshing because
- 35:41Speaker 1: so much stuff is on the West Side far away. Yeah,
- 35:48Speaker 1: And I had PROBA people hit me up and go like, so,
- 35:50Speaker 1: like the last of the best Side. Are you sure
- 35:53Speaker 1: is this the premier? I was like, yeah, yes, yes, man, yes,
- 35:58Speaker 1: say that's where it said, okay, just want to make sure.
- 36:00Speaker 1: I wasn't sure, like because they were so used to like, oh,
- 36:03Speaker 1: we're gonna go to Hollywood, We're gonna go with that,
- 36:05Speaker 1: We're Beverly Hills and we're like no, and to be
- 36:08Speaker 1: where it needs to be, and and it was so beautiful,
- 36:10Speaker 1: you said. And we got to also bring so many
- 36:12Speaker 1: vendors from the community that I thought, man, the food
- 36:15Speaker 1: game that night we didn't get to eat because we
- 36:17Speaker 1: were talking to everyone else had the best food ever.
- 36:22Speaker 1: It looked amazing. And they also let me send them
- 36:24Speaker 1: a bunch of vendors that we were like, you guys
- 36:26Speaker 1: gonna check out all these people and bring them in.
- 36:27Speaker 1: So that was that was super dope. Yeah, the tackles
- 36:30Speaker 1: were bombed. The one place that we ate that what
- 36:33Speaker 1: is it? John Legend and Chrissie Teagan allegedly likes yeah, yeah,
- 36:42Speaker 1: I forget the name or something like that. Yeah, yeah,
- 36:47Speaker 1: I think so yeah, so good. I didn't know Chrissy
- 36:52Speaker 1: Teagan and John Legend like vouch. Yeah, that's wild. It
- 36:57Speaker 1: was so awesome. It was such a special night. We
- 36:59Speaker 1: really but I also thank you for sharing that because
- 37:02Speaker 1: we were also a little worried because technically it's not
- 37:04Speaker 1: in bull hids. We were like, we needs to be
- 37:05Speaker 1: in bullhids. But we shot so many uh scenes there
- 37:08Speaker 1: at the finale episode the art gallery um that's in
- 37:13Speaker 1: episode ten, like that was all yeah, you could tell
- 37:16Speaker 1: like when I thought for sure, yeah, we're over here
- 37:21Speaker 1: pretending it's like over like on the wet um. But
- 37:25Speaker 1: we were like yo, like in our stages were like
- 37:27Speaker 1: so close to there, and we were like there all
- 37:29Speaker 1: the time, like we're just like it felt right to
- 37:31Speaker 1: be able to deal with there, and we knew that
- 37:32Speaker 1: it was such a hub for the community. We're like,
- 37:36Speaker 1: it's such a beautiful space, Like it's so great. I
- 37:38Speaker 1: didn't even realize, like people are telling us later that
- 37:41Speaker 1: there was like all this other stuff, like all further
- 37:42Speaker 1: a little further away you could get like Cheeto boats
- 37:45Speaker 1: and stuff. When I heard about what we had valets too,
- 37:53Speaker 1: damn they were there. I know, the truck that was
- 38:00Speaker 1: on my and my mom was like, we need to
- 38:02Speaker 1: have that truck. It was beautiful though the little trailer.
- 38:06Speaker 1: So y'all missed out everyone listening now, I'm kidding people,
- 38:12Speaker 1: more people if we got to do another one. There
- 38:15Speaker 1: is where we also picked up place like our team did,
- 38:17Speaker 1: because it allowed us to have more space from our community,
- 38:21Speaker 1: because we want to invite so much community and Netflix
- 38:24Speaker 1: wanted to honor that. In a lot of the spaces
- 38:26Speaker 1: that we were looking at didn't have enough room for
- 38:28Speaker 1: us the amount of people we were trying to invite,
- 38:30Speaker 1: so they were really it is like worked out perfectly,
- 38:33Speaker 1: I think. So. Yeah, so it's been a month, right
- 38:37Speaker 1: and then after the release on Netflix, you went on
- 38:40Speaker 1: a press tour and then well now we're in a pandemic, right,
- 38:44Speaker 1: and we're like and now we're being quarantined like staf
- 38:48Speaker 1: we're at home, So like, how has that transition been
- 38:52Speaker 1: for like, busy, busy busy too? Now you're like, I'm
- 38:55Speaker 1: taking a step back because I literally have to. Well
- 38:59Speaker 1: it was, I mean, we're so we we were pretty
- 39:02Speaker 1: fortunate that we the show did come out before all
- 39:04Speaker 1: this happened, because I mean, like the talent has shut down.
- 39:07Speaker 1: It's crazy, like how everything is happening right now. I
- 39:10Speaker 1: mean it was we were starting to wind down so
- 39:13Speaker 1: for at least for me personally, Like I was ready.
- 39:15Speaker 1: I was like, I need a break, things are slowing down.
- 39:18Speaker 1: I'm gonna like I was already planning like getting a
- 39:20Speaker 1: cabin and big bear and just disappearing for a week. Um,
- 39:23Speaker 1: And then this happened and I was like, Okay, I
- 39:25Speaker 1: guess I'll just stay home and watch movies all week.
- 39:26Speaker 1: So all the last week I was kicking and I
- 39:28Speaker 1: was chilling, um, just watching a lot of movies. But
- 39:31Speaker 1: by Sunday Monday this week, I I snapped. I definitely did.
- 39:36Speaker 1: Was like like I was like, I'm like, oh, I'm
- 39:38Speaker 1: like really stuck here for I'm gonna like, this is
- 39:41Speaker 1: a lot. This is a lot. I mean, my beard
- 39:43Speaker 1: is getting off. It's looking good. It's looking pretty good,
- 39:45Speaker 1: but it looks it's looking happy. I've got a lot
- 39:49Speaker 1: of sleep. I will say that I've got a lot
- 39:51Speaker 1: of it's looking really like, yeah, I missed it. I
- 39:56Speaker 1: haven't seen it like this in a while. Um, But
- 40:00Speaker 1: I don't know, I'm starting to feel a little bit
- 40:02Speaker 1: of like okay, like, um, you know, but luckily what
- 40:07Speaker 1: we do is we we right right now. All we
- 40:09Speaker 1: can do is right and like what's what we need
- 40:11Speaker 1: to do, so we can do that from home and
- 40:13Speaker 1: a lot of virtual calls and phone calls and so
- 40:17Speaker 1: it's you know, we're very fortunate that we get to
- 40:19Speaker 1: be able to do most of what we do from home.
- 40:22Speaker 1: We don't have to and if anything alone. The other
- 40:25Speaker 1: thing is that people like to have a lot of
- 40:26Speaker 1: meetings and they make us drive all over the place
- 40:28Speaker 1: to go to meetings. And it's like now we're learning, like,
- 40:31Speaker 1: you know, we didn't have to. We could just have
- 40:32Speaker 1: done this the whole time and we don't have to
- 40:34Speaker 1: drive all the way. You know. That's so real? Is
- 40:42Speaker 1: all the driving that necessary? It's really not. I think Yeah,
- 40:49Speaker 1: for me, it's been a little different. But I tend
- 40:52Speaker 1: to process things like Marvin like he he like he'll
- 40:56Speaker 1: like gogle go and then he'll something all hit him
- 40:58Speaker 1: like later down on line and be like, oh ship,
- 41:00Speaker 1: what happened me? It's like immediate like like whoa, this
- 41:03Speaker 1: is happening. Don't you see what's happening? Like and so
- 41:06Speaker 1: for me, when when it happened it was very much like, oh, wow,
- 41:09Speaker 1: we're off experience of experiencing a collective trauma. Like we're
- 41:12Speaker 1: in the midst of a collective trauma that we're experiencing.
- 41:15Speaker 1: And um, for some of us that like, I think
- 41:18Speaker 1: our reaction to that trauma is to go full speed ahead,
- 41:21Speaker 1: and for others it's like we need that space to
- 41:25Speaker 1: process and to like, you know, it's kind of like
- 41:28Speaker 1: the flight or fight response of the body that happens.
- 41:30Speaker 1: And I think for some people it's like fly and
- 41:32Speaker 1: run and keep working and pushed through, and for others
- 41:35Speaker 1: it's a little bit of that freeze and like, oh,
- 41:37Speaker 1: what's happening? Let me take this in. And if I
- 41:39Speaker 1: think if you're empathic as well, and I feel like
- 41:42Speaker 1: a lot of creatives who are writers and who are
- 41:45Speaker 1: connected to communities, like you know, often we feel that
- 41:49Speaker 1: we feel our communities and are the people that that
- 41:52Speaker 1: were connected to We feel that that that anxiety that
- 41:55Speaker 1: overwhelmed and and right now we're experiencing it on a
- 41:58Speaker 1: global level. And so for me when it happened, it
- 42:00Speaker 1: was definitely jarring and a lot to a lot of
- 42:05Speaker 1: process and two in, like Mormon said, like we are
- 42:08Speaker 1: so blessed that we get to be financially secure and
- 42:12Speaker 1: be able to continue some of our work from home.
- 42:14Speaker 1: But that's not true for everyone. And I think that
- 42:17Speaker 1: and this for me, a lot of that's on my
- 42:19Speaker 1: mind is, yes, our work is some of our work
- 42:22Speaker 1: in Hollywood is important. Obviously, storytelling is important. But curious about,
- 42:26Speaker 1: like in these times, whether or not pressing cause on
- 42:29Speaker 1: some of those things so that we can help the
- 42:31Speaker 1: greater community is also an okay thing to do. Like
- 42:35Speaker 1: I don't know, I'm processing a lot of those thoughts
- 42:37Speaker 1: in my head because I have continued to work. I
- 42:38Speaker 1: have a script that I'm revising right now, and and
- 42:41Speaker 1: Hollywood has continued to move forward in a lot of
- 42:43Speaker 1: ways and development, but productions shut down like everywhere. So
- 42:47Speaker 1: we got so blessed that our our premiere like happened
- 42:50Speaker 1: because you know, all my blocks premiere got canceled like
- 42:53Speaker 1: one day at a time, like everybody who had shows
- 42:55Speaker 1: coming out of their premieres got canceled. And and promo
- 42:59Speaker 1: is very different now, right, Like it's like you're trying
- 43:01Speaker 1: to promote and people are like yay, kind of like
- 43:05Speaker 1: it's it's hard to be like, yeah, look at this show.
- 43:08Speaker 1: But that's what, my god, what's happening? People are down
- 43:11Speaker 1: like it's a it's a very different like energy and atmosphere.
- 43:14Speaker 1: And I'm very grateful that we have the opportunity to
- 43:17Speaker 1: have such an amazing celebration of the series and what
- 43:21Speaker 1: it means to not only us, for to our people
- 43:24Speaker 1: and to the community and the audiences have watched it.
- 43:26Speaker 1: And so for me and the time of prison, who's
- 43:29Speaker 1: like whoa like sit back and take that all in
- 43:31Speaker 1: and try to process it. And I think for me,
- 43:33Speaker 1: just in the last few days, have I been coming
- 43:35Speaker 1: back into Okay, this is our new normal? And how
- 43:39Speaker 1: do we function within this new normal? And how do
- 43:41Speaker 1: we create within this new normal? How do we keep
- 43:44Speaker 1: supporting creators and keep telling stories in a world where
- 43:50Speaker 1: a lot of people are in survival mode and and
- 43:52Speaker 1: sometimes art is a luxury, sometimes it's not a luxury.
- 43:55Speaker 1: And I think right now, people like we're we're in
- 43:59Speaker 1: a least of like people need basics, you know, like
- 44:03Speaker 1: they need food and home and water and um mental
- 44:06Speaker 1: health resources and and this is kind of the first
- 44:09Speaker 1: time and in our lives where it's happening globally and
- 44:13Speaker 1: this to this degree where like it's this intense. Sorry,
- 44:16Speaker 1: I don't mean to be all down there about like
- 44:20Speaker 1: that's what's on my mind. Like that's what's been on
- 44:23Speaker 1: my mind for the past weekend. I have and and
- 44:25Speaker 1: it's like, you know, I was talking to um, a
- 44:28Speaker 1: friend of Julisa, you guys, not Juli stat to say.
- 44:29Speaker 1: I was talking to her earlier and I was like, Um,
- 44:33Speaker 1: I was like, you know, we just had to take
- 44:34Speaker 1: it one day at a time, Like you know that
- 44:36Speaker 1: song that was a song of my grandma would always
- 44:38Speaker 1: think good when she was my Mofina, who the characters
- 44:41Speaker 1: named after. She would always that was one of her
- 44:43Speaker 1: favorite songs towards said of her life. It's like, well,
- 44:46Speaker 1: I've been painting is a lot of suffer, and there's
- 44:47Speaker 1: a lot of tough things, but we just gotta take
- 44:48Speaker 1: it one day at a time and live each day
- 44:51Speaker 1: one to the next and and still leave room for
- 44:53Speaker 1: joy within that. So that's where my mind is what
- 44:57Speaker 1: I tend to go that deep, really hard, and then
- 44:59Speaker 1: I come out of it and we switched places in it,
- 45:01Speaker 1: and then MARK think is really deep, and then I'm
- 45:03Speaker 1: like it's gonna be okay. That's have fun. So how
- 45:07Speaker 1: are you or both of you know, it's okay, how
- 45:09Speaker 1: are both of you finding joy right now? You know,
- 45:12Speaker 1: we're like very limited and what we can do, but
- 45:14Speaker 1: there's also so much gratitude that we can also practice
- 45:17Speaker 1: in these moments. So I'm wondering how y'all are finding
- 45:20Speaker 1: joy right now? Go ahead you In the beginning, honestly,
- 45:27Speaker 1: for me, with social media means, I was like fucking
- 45:30Speaker 1: means where like I love the Internet, Like, as you know,
- 45:34Speaker 1: that was deep a minute ago, but I can you know,
- 45:35Speaker 1: I like my jokes, so just like being online and
- 45:38Speaker 1: seeing people just that where I love is like when
- 45:42Speaker 1: when we the internet has shown me how funny the
- 45:44Speaker 1: world is. Like people are like so many people out
- 45:47Speaker 1: there who are so brilliant, who are so creatively funny,
- 45:50Speaker 1: who don't have like they don't have a TV writer's room,
- 45:53Speaker 1: they don't have all these things that you see in media,
- 45:56Speaker 1: but they have a Twitter on Instagram account and they
- 45:59Speaker 1: gotta meme generator and they're just out here pumping out
- 46:02Speaker 1: things that I'm just like cracking up. And all the
- 46:05Speaker 1: last week, the first first half of last week, I
- 46:07Speaker 1: was just like devouring internet means and and reposting them
- 46:11Speaker 1: and writing my own on Twitter, and I was just
- 46:13Speaker 1: like finding the funny and all of this whole situation right,
- 46:16Speaker 1: And I think that that's that brings joy and that
- 46:19Speaker 1: brings happiness, and and also running I've been I took
- 46:22Speaker 1: up running in October, so I've been trying to use
- 46:24Speaker 1: that as a way to like go out and clear
- 46:27Speaker 1: my mind and look at the sky and and stay
- 46:29Speaker 1: with the reality that the world is still here, We're
- 46:31Speaker 1: all okay. So that bringing me a lot of joy. Yeah, beautiful,
- 46:39Speaker 1: I was read to say. I was like, what are
- 46:40Speaker 1: righting for joy? A lot more. I've been playing with
- 46:45Speaker 1: my my, my, my daughter, my human daughter Coco. Um
- 46:52Speaker 1: that the dog is a dog that people don't know.
- 46:55Speaker 1: People know my human daughter Coco is a dog species scientifically,
- 47:03Speaker 1: but um, but in my heart a human child. No her.
- 47:09Speaker 1: But also last week, like my girlfriend, I were cooking
- 47:13Speaker 1: a lot. We were having the best time. I was
- 47:15Speaker 1: gonna say, you're cooking, man, I was so jealous. We
- 47:18Speaker 1: were cooking up a fucking we were eating like gods
- 47:20Speaker 1: in this house and it was really nice. We were
- 47:23Speaker 1: just because I don't never really get to do that
- 47:25Speaker 1: or have that time to slow down enough to actually
- 47:27Speaker 1: appreciate it. Um, and your girlfriend she's an incredible cook.
- 47:33Speaker 1: She's a master chef. Like, she's a master chef. No, like,
- 47:37Speaker 1: I'm not even Like. We will go to like these
- 47:39Speaker 1: restaurants that are on people's lists, like top like ten lists,
- 47:42Speaker 1: and we'll try something. This is great, come home. She
- 47:45Speaker 1: wants to recreate it. We'll do it better, like every
- 47:48Speaker 1: time I swear to you, I swear to you. I'm
- 47:50Speaker 1: so lucky. Um, and I just get to eat like
- 47:52Speaker 1: that and um. And then I have a stack of
- 47:55Speaker 1: DVDs that I've been dying to get too, and I've
- 47:57Speaker 1: just been watching all these movies that I haven't had
- 48:00Speaker 1: I watch. So that's, you know, the simple, the simple things.
- 48:03Speaker 1: But I think because we've worked so crazy some crazy hours,
- 48:06Speaker 1: I don't get to do the simple things like binging anything.
- 48:10Speaker 1: So that's that's true, you know, watching stuff that I'm
- 48:14Speaker 1: just like, wow, how did they? Well, I've been watching
- 48:16Speaker 1: a lot of behind I bought a bunch of stuff
- 48:18Speaker 1: on iTunes and I've been watching all the behind the
- 48:20Speaker 1: scenes feature That's that's what I've been doing. I'm I'm
- 48:24Speaker 1: a moving nerd. I'm a moving nerd like that. Yeah, yeah,
- 48:27Speaker 1: it's like, um, I mean it's kind of what you
- 48:31Speaker 1: were talking about, Linda, that weird balance of this is
- 48:34Speaker 1: a global crisis and people are suffering, but I can
- 48:38Speaker 1: also like use this time to do things that I've
- 48:42Speaker 1: been wanting to do because I'm stuck in my house
- 48:44Speaker 1: and I can't go anywhere, and like, I know that
- 48:46Speaker 1: they're suffering happening and there's more coming, but I'm stuck
- 48:50Speaker 1: in my home and I have to do something to
- 48:54Speaker 1: keep myself occupied, and it's just like for me, the
- 48:57Speaker 1: biggest mind funk right now of feeling just sort of
- 49:01Speaker 1: like I don't know, it's very like this limbo that
- 49:05Speaker 1: it's it's it's I'm waiting to see what like the
- 49:09Speaker 1: next couple of weeks springs. Yeah, yeah, it's a trip.
- 49:15Speaker 1: I mean it is. I think That's what I what
- 49:18Speaker 1: I was talking about with this last week being so
- 49:20Speaker 1: like I was enjoying it is because I definitely wasn't
- 49:22Speaker 1: a place in my life where I needed to hit
- 49:24Speaker 1: cos I like really wanted to be a person again,
- 49:28Speaker 1: Like I really was, like I wanted to go to
- 49:29Speaker 1: be home and watch TV and cook and hang out
- 49:31Speaker 1: with my dog and like like all those things that
- 49:34Speaker 1: like you know, I didn't get to have for a
- 49:36Speaker 1: couple of months. Um, and now that I've had a
- 49:40Speaker 1: week of it and like you know, been able to
- 49:42Speaker 1: like just like kind of disconnect and be like Okay,
- 49:44Speaker 1: I got my film of being a person and rejuvenated
- 49:47Speaker 1: to take care of myself. Uh and then checking back
- 49:50Speaker 1: like lind Like Linda was saying, like she goes to
- 49:52Speaker 1: it right away, and for me, it took a week
- 49:54Speaker 1: of like, you know, my self care before I realized
- 49:56Speaker 1: I'm like, ye know, this is like a real like
- 49:58Speaker 1: this is for real, Like this is like we're only
- 50:01Speaker 1: a weekend and it's gonna be a while. And I
- 50:03Speaker 1: don't think it's gonna just be a few weeks, Like
- 50:05Speaker 1: I think it might end up being like two months,
- 50:07Speaker 1: the way that it was for like China, and like
- 50:09Speaker 1: I think it's just gonna keep going. And I started
- 50:11Speaker 1: to like to you know, like today and yesterday was
- 50:14Speaker 1: starting to be like okay, like what are we doing?
- 50:16Speaker 1: What's going on? There's all these stuff, All these funds
- 50:18Speaker 1: are going around like I know, uh, I just posted
- 50:22Speaker 1: about them today with inclusive Valet are raising funds for
- 50:29Speaker 1: like street vendors um, Like there's also there's like I forget.
- 50:34Speaker 1: I think it's the people that heights, Yeah, is doing something,
- 50:40Speaker 1: and I think also the Gumbiaton Collective. Are they going
- 50:44Speaker 1: to do something? Oh that's really great. Yeah, we're doing
- 50:46Speaker 1: like virtual brunches uh at Chelas. You can like tip
- 50:51Speaker 1: the DJs as they play live virtually awesome. Yeah, yeah,
- 50:57Speaker 1: we gotta promote that. I have Stephanie like collecting but
- 51:01Speaker 1: I didn't tell you this, Marvin, but I have stuffingly
- 51:02Speaker 1: collecting a bunch of fundraiser things to like post about
- 51:06Speaker 1: and like alive about because yeah, it's like stuff like that, right,
- 51:10Speaker 1: Like how do we support each other as a community
- 51:12Speaker 1: is That's what's on my mind this whole time. It's
- 51:14Speaker 1: like I don't trust that this government is doing that
- 51:17Speaker 1: for us, and that like this is a time for
- 51:19Speaker 1: us to like show up for each other, especially the
- 51:22Speaker 1: most vulnerable amongst us, and like how do we do that?
- 51:24Speaker 1: And you know, like from Marvin and I were just
- 51:27Speaker 1: barely coming into this space of having a small amount
- 51:30Speaker 1: of like notoriety and power, and it's like how do
- 51:34Speaker 1: we utilize that? And because it's so new to us,
- 51:37Speaker 1: it's like, Okay, how do we how do we how
- 51:39Speaker 1: do we leverage that to like make some sort of
- 51:42Speaker 1: impact and create change during this time, because it is
- 51:44Speaker 1: going to be a long haul, Like this is not
- 51:47Speaker 1: just you know like ures I think he gets have been.
- 51:52Speaker 1: He had just posted today about his grandma and then
- 51:55Speaker 1: getting a notice about you guys have to pay your rent,
- 51:58Speaker 1: like and if you don't pay it and accumulate and
- 52:01Speaker 1: once like you know, this quarantine is over, you're gonna
- 52:04Speaker 1: have to pay all of it. And he's like trying
- 52:06Speaker 1: really hard to call and like you know, you know,
- 52:09Speaker 1: bite them on that, and it's just stuff like that
- 52:11Speaker 1: that I'm like, yeah, like this is we need to have,
- 52:14Speaker 1: like waste is support people for a minute, like and
- 52:17Speaker 1: it's the government's not really showing up and the way
- 52:20Speaker 1: we need them to. I mean, we're gonna keep forcing them, right,
- 52:22Speaker 1: but like how are we? It's a it's a it's
- 52:25Speaker 1: a trying time. It's also kind of beautiful in a
- 52:28Speaker 1: lot of ways to like for people because there's so
- 52:30Speaker 1: many people out there who have been doing this work
- 52:32Speaker 1: already for so long rite and are doing that are
- 52:35Speaker 1: showing up. But I think it's also forcing other people
- 52:38Speaker 1: to be very are fully aware of it and to
- 52:43Speaker 1: be called to action in ways that I don't think
- 52:45Speaker 1: they would have ever been moved to in the past,
- 52:47Speaker 1: to know very clearly that like where you need to
- 52:50Speaker 1: invest your money and time and and why. I don't know,
- 52:54Speaker 1: like I think it's important. I don't know how I
- 52:56Speaker 1: got back into all this, but yeah, yeah, no, but
- 53:00Speaker 1: I think it's really it's refreshing to hear. I mean, okay, right, so,
- 53:04Speaker 1: like you're talking about Hollywood and you know, whatever level
- 53:08Speaker 1: of celebrity or name recognition. And I've been seeing so
- 53:11Speaker 1: much conversation on Twitter, for example, about how people are
- 53:14Speaker 1: just fed up with celebrities just you know, I'm just
- 53:18Speaker 1: gonna give you a little performance in the midst of
- 53:20Speaker 1: chaos and ask you who are all out of work
- 53:23Speaker 1: to donate, right, Like, folks are above it and beyond
- 53:27Speaker 1: it now. And um, I think it's so important that
- 53:31Speaker 1: celebrities and folks and entertainment and with platforms kind of
- 53:35Speaker 1: go back to the days in the past where celebrities
- 53:38Speaker 1: were straight up activists and like putting themselves on the
- 53:41Speaker 1: line and using their platform and their money for good.
- 53:44Speaker 1: I mean, I think of Muhammad Ali and like celebs
- 53:48Speaker 1: doing some legit shit, you know, so I think that,
- 53:51Speaker 1: like that's the type of conversation that I would like
- 53:54Speaker 1: for folks with platforms to be having, Like you're like
- 53:57Speaker 1: resource distribution, like you're talking about Linda, Yeah, I under saying.
- 54:01Speaker 1: You know, in my background, like my my art to beginnings,
- 54:05Speaker 1: like my very first thing that brought me into writing
- 54:09Speaker 1: as a professional in college as a social purchase theater class,
- 54:13Speaker 1: and like for me, like my foundation is around activism
- 54:16Speaker 1: in the arts and so finding ways to like not
- 54:20Speaker 1: only be you know, like I think storytellers are so vital,
- 54:22Speaker 1: but we're in an age now that we need to
- 54:24Speaker 1: have the conversation around like, Okay, we're telling stories, but
- 54:28Speaker 1: how are we leveraging those stories to really make a
- 54:30Speaker 1: full impact. There is there's the impact of being seen
- 54:33Speaker 1: as the impact of the story being out there that
- 54:37Speaker 1: that is tangible. There's statistics around what that impact can be.
- 54:42Speaker 1: But I think that we could take it even a
- 54:44Speaker 1: step further and use use our work to create calls
- 54:49Speaker 1: to action and to have real movements and to do more,
- 54:52Speaker 1: Like you said, where we've seen in the past and
- 54:54Speaker 1: other artists and celebrities have used their work for that,
- 54:57Speaker 1: And I'm trying to think of examples off the top
- 54:59Speaker 1: of hand a camp but have used their work in
- 55:02Speaker 1: those ways and words in ways that we're so impactful
- 55:04Speaker 1: and really, you know, you know, that's like one equipment
- 55:11Speaker 1: that's really working with the community, really working with active activists,
- 55:14Speaker 1: and I think Hollywood, you know, and kind of separate
- 55:17Speaker 1: themselves from that. But there's a lot of content coming out,
- 55:20Speaker 1: especially in this renaissance of media that is around the
- 55:25Speaker 1: politics that we're living because the politics that we're living
- 55:27Speaker 1: in are so intense, like it's so well, it's always
- 55:30Speaker 1: been intense, but it's extremely like been amplified right in
- 55:34Speaker 1: the last four years under this presidency, um, and so
- 55:38Speaker 1: you have a lot of media coming out that is
- 55:39Speaker 1: pretty transgressive and like it's new and it's like it's
- 55:43Speaker 1: speaking to these times and it's like okay, but how
- 55:45Speaker 1: do we now take it even further? That's always on
- 55:48Speaker 1: my mind and I'm almost time Marvin about that. Well,
- 55:51Speaker 1: I feel like what we've experienced and like, well, one
- 55:53Speaker 1: of the biggest barriers with them, and like, I mean
- 55:55Speaker 1: it's starting to yeah, like you're saying, like in the
- 55:57Speaker 1: last four years and with this administration, it's like active
- 56:00Speaker 1: there are a lot of people to it. But I
- 56:01Speaker 1: think that what we found is like it's so hard.
- 56:04Speaker 1: There's a disconnect because Hollywood is in their own little
- 56:07Speaker 1: bubble in a lot of ways, and I think there's
- 56:08Speaker 1: a lot of, um, you know, implicit biases that kind
- 56:14Speaker 1: of end up being like there's just class differences and
- 56:16Speaker 1: there's just some things like where they do separate themselves
- 56:18Speaker 1: so much. I mean, you know when you talk about
- 56:21Speaker 1: remember like when they would talk about going to college,
- 56:24Speaker 1: and like when you hear people you tell people you're
- 56:27Speaker 1: from l A and they're just like, oh La so
- 56:29Speaker 1: Javid or like you know, they don't like l A.
- 56:31Speaker 1: And it's just like, well, we're talking about two different
- 56:33Speaker 1: l as here. Um, I'm like, yeah, at least I
- 56:40Speaker 1: grew up in that's where I had My family were
- 56:42Speaker 1: Like I was like, it wasn't that l A. Like
- 56:44Speaker 1: you know when I go to those like being in
- 56:46Speaker 1: high school and going to like Beverly Hills for the
- 56:48Speaker 1: first time, been feeling so fucking out of place, and um,
- 56:51Speaker 1: like you know, and my mom would just being able
- 56:53Speaker 1: to just like be a tourist, like being a tourison
- 56:55Speaker 1: in our own damn city, you know what I mean. Um,
- 56:58Speaker 1: But that's like the one of the things, one of
- 57:01Speaker 1: those barriers and one of the things that like Lynn
- 57:03Speaker 1: and I are definitely always kind of bumping up against.
- 57:06Speaker 1: And we know that we then try that. We know
- 57:10Speaker 1: that we're like out here, we're like, okay, cool, Like
- 57:11Speaker 1: we gotta represent that in like um as hard as
- 57:15Speaker 1: we can and constantly and always implementing it in the
- 57:17Speaker 1: work when we talk about the show and the premier
- 57:20Speaker 1: needing to be in boil hights Er or in in
- 57:22Speaker 1: the in the like you know, uh proper versus you know,
- 57:26Speaker 1: anywhere else in l a like being able to come
- 57:29Speaker 1: like at every level, always incorporating community. And we did,
- 57:33Speaker 1: you know, we've only scratched the surface of what we're
- 57:36Speaker 1: able to do and what we can do with the
- 57:38Speaker 1: you know, the little influence that we had show. But
- 57:42Speaker 1: it's like it's one of those things where we're like, okay,
- 57:44Speaker 1: Like we just gotta keep leading by example because of
- 57:46Speaker 1: everybody's place, everybody's hearts in the right place, everybody wants
- 57:49Speaker 1: to do the right thing. But there tends to be
- 57:52Speaker 1: we find that disconnect because a lot of folks that
- 57:54Speaker 1: are have been have the privilege of working in this
- 57:56Speaker 1: industry don't come from the backgrounds like low income backgrounds
- 57:59Speaker 1: that we up or having you know, immigrant parents or
- 58:03Speaker 1: growing up with undocumented parents, and I can really understand
- 58:07Speaker 1: it and connect with them apparent Um it's still there's
- 58:10Speaker 1: still like a filter that they're looking at, uh, their
- 58:15Speaker 1: activism through that I think is removed from the reality
- 58:18Speaker 1: of it. So I don't know where exactly where I'm
- 58:21Speaker 1: going with that, But that's just like an observation. I
- 58:23Speaker 1: guess of what we've found why it can be um modeled,
- 58:28Speaker 1: and I guess why people you know, are calling celebrities
- 58:32Speaker 1: out of just like what there's some there look like, well,
- 58:35Speaker 1: just like that that imagined video Like like I remember, yeah,
- 58:41Speaker 1: just watching it and being like the first time I
- 58:43Speaker 1: watched I was like, Okay, I don't get it, and
- 58:46Speaker 1: then I didn't really think too deeply on it, and
- 58:48Speaker 1: then as I saw people's reactions to it, I was like, oh,
- 58:50Speaker 1: that's the feeling I was having. I was like, okay,
- 58:53Speaker 1: math and all the people doing okay. But and then
- 58:56Speaker 1: someone to cut a video together where they like put
- 58:59Speaker 1: everyone's back you and worth did you guys see that one?
- 59:01Speaker 1: I actually haven't seen that, but yeah, that's impactful, Like
- 59:05Speaker 1: literally what you're thinking as they're singing, like what the funk?
- 59:08Speaker 1: Why don't y'all buy protective gear instead of asking us
- 59:11Speaker 1: unemployed to do that? Like then you see each one
- 59:16Speaker 1: is like a hundred and sixty three million worth, like
- 59:18Speaker 1: thirty million worth, And I'm just like, oh, yeah, like
- 59:21Speaker 1: this is it's just yeah, that type of thinking and
- 59:26Speaker 1: and and you know, Cardi B put out that video today.
- 59:29Speaker 1: Did you guys see that? Yeah? Like down love her. Yeah,
- 59:35Speaker 1: she's so real. And I mean because she grew up
- 59:38Speaker 1: again with a similar background and being able to speak
- 59:41Speaker 1: and has educated herself in a lot of ways on
- 59:44Speaker 1: capitalism and the way it works. And even though she's
- 59:46Speaker 1: living within it, right because she's still we're also living
- 59:49Speaker 1: within the that institute, those structures of capitalism, but she's
- 59:53Speaker 1: able to still use that power to speak to like
- 59:56Speaker 1: the injustices in that way. And yeah, I mean, I
- 59:59Speaker 1: don't know a celebrities are wild, Like this is what
- 1:00:02Speaker 1: we're I think that's what we're experiencing right now, Like
- 1:00:03Speaker 1: the ridiculousness of a lot of the ship that we've
- 1:00:06Speaker 1: all been in this matrix for a long time and
- 1:00:09Speaker 1: we're seeing how ridiculous. It is, Yeah, definitely like the
- 1:00:12Speaker 1: Hunker games when you like look at the different districts
- 1:00:15Speaker 1: and like the celebrities are in the first district like
- 1:00:19Speaker 1: sing like all the delicious, you know, grandose foods and
- 1:00:24Speaker 1: wearing all the beautiful gowns and all of that ship
- 1:00:26Speaker 1: and we're like, what the met gala right? The capital?
- 1:00:33Speaker 1: I know, but some of those dresses are cute. Sometimes
- 1:00:40Speaker 1: would like this, but there's still the capital. It's real.
- 1:00:48Speaker 1: I don't know's it was like, I love the Hunger Gud.
- 1:00:50Speaker 1: I remember devouring those books and like like a few
- 1:00:52Speaker 1: nights um. But remember when they put at the makeup
- 1:00:57Speaker 1: that I read that they read books don't feel fast
- 1:01:03Speaker 1: that I said, It's like I really loved them. I
- 1:01:05Speaker 1: was like so obsessed with them. But I remember they
- 1:01:07Speaker 1: put out the makeup line like after they released the movies,
- 1:01:10Speaker 1: and I remember thinking like, wow, this is like so
- 1:01:13Speaker 1: not what these books. The intention of these books were,
- 1:01:16Speaker 1: like it's like for them to then create these movies,
- 1:01:20Speaker 1: they're the makeup line. And then the makeup line is
- 1:01:23Speaker 1: like the capital of pan Pano pant what was the
- 1:01:26Speaker 1: name of that? I think it was like and then yeah,
- 1:01:28Speaker 1: and it was like, look like pen and I was like,
- 1:01:31Speaker 1: this is wow. I don't think that was the intention
- 1:01:34Speaker 1: of the hydricaine. Like we just had such with this
- 1:01:40Speaker 1: cognitive dissonance, you know, like we're always we're living right
- 1:01:43Speaker 1: now exactly. Yeah, damn. I do want eventually my custom
- 1:01:53Speaker 1: like fashion stricle masks, because I'm sure they're coming, so girl,
- 1:01:59Speaker 1: I'm planning what's mine gonna look like. I'm sure there's
- 1:02:02Speaker 1: gonna be like get your get your custom like online,
- 1:02:05Speaker 1: like what are you gonna do? I'm just well, just no,
- 1:02:12Speaker 1: I don't know. I I think I want something that
- 1:02:16Speaker 1: has like Mala on it, you know what I mean.
- 1:02:19Speaker 1: We're gonna from belts with our names to name plates
- 1:02:21Speaker 1: to the surgical masks with our names, like like airbrushed
- 1:02:25Speaker 1: Mala probably airbrush. Maybe they cannot. I don't know, croche,
- 1:02:32Speaker 1: I don't know whatever that metaful. I'm waiting. I'm sure
- 1:02:37Speaker 1: we're going to see it eventually. It might not not
- 1:02:39Speaker 1: be me, but I'm sure eventually we're gonna see the
- 1:02:40Speaker 1: sun up there. I'm sure I would be you that
- 1:02:45Speaker 1: would be you know, We're gonna I would get like
- 1:02:51Speaker 1: pink with like love eating on it, just to protect
- 1:02:53Speaker 1: you know, protect this map from the germs. What you know,
- 1:03:00Speaker 1: you know that they're coming. And the d I Y
- 1:03:03Speaker 1: tutorials to make your own already seen though they're already
- 1:03:08Speaker 1: out there there you go. I watched on tid to
- 1:03:14Speaker 1: make one out of paper towel. I was like, okay, cool,
- 1:03:16Speaker 1: I can do that, you go. I don't know, so
- 1:03:22Speaker 1: um okay. Pantified. H Linda, you mentioned right there's a
- 1:03:31Speaker 1: Casa Fina. Casafina and Mama FINA's restaurant are like two
- 1:03:37Speaker 1: separate but existing at like fixtures. We've got Casafina in
- 1:03:42Speaker 1: Boil Heights, which is the restaurant owned by Cosafina Lopez,
- 1:03:46Speaker 1: and there's Mama Finas, which is the restaurant in Pentified. Right.
- 1:03:51Speaker 1: Is there a direct correlation or inspo there or is
- 1:03:55Speaker 1: it just coincidence? We want to get into the origins,
- 1:03:58Speaker 1: the making of and out in all these different characters
- 1:04:01Speaker 1: and storylines come about. Where did you find your instafo? Yeah?
- 1:04:06Speaker 1: I mean, like, we love Gasafinez and we know and
- 1:04:08Speaker 1: we met with jo Sefina early on in the process.
- 1:04:11Speaker 1: She was on our panel for our digital series and
- 1:04:14Speaker 1: she's incredible, But it was actually a coincidence that we
- 1:04:16Speaker 1: realized afterwards because in the process developing the characters, we
- 1:04:22Speaker 1: were naming the grandmother, and Marvin Um was like, why
- 1:04:26Speaker 1: don't we name her after your grandmother because my mom
- 1:04:28Speaker 1: Afina like for me, had been a big part of
- 1:04:31Speaker 1: getting me to this in spirit, because she passed away
- 1:04:35Speaker 1: about twelve years ago. Thirteen years ago. It was a
- 1:04:39Speaker 1: big part of getting me to fantified and getting me
- 1:04:42Speaker 1: through this process. And I had talked a lot about
- 1:04:44Speaker 1: her and Um we talked a lot about loss and
- 1:04:47Speaker 1: like had the loss of her as a matriarch in
- 1:04:49Speaker 1: our family, and how I affected my mom and infected
- 1:04:52Speaker 1: my family. And she was also a great cook, like
- 1:04:54Speaker 1: an incredible chef, and how food really just was from
- 1:05:00Speaker 1: for all of us honestly, like when when losing herman
- 1:05:04Speaker 1: losing that her food as well, which sounds crazy but
- 1:05:07Speaker 1: was such a hard thing to lose, so us recreating
- 1:05:10Speaker 1: her meals every holiday is like such an honoring process
- 1:05:15Speaker 1: for us, Like when we do the monest every year,
- 1:05:17Speaker 1: which was her signature, Like you know, we have the candle,
- 1:05:19Speaker 1: We put her a photo and we asked her to
- 1:05:20Speaker 1: police BLUs Us so that we could try to make
- 1:05:22Speaker 1: them close to her and Andy a little bit close
- 1:05:25Speaker 1: to how she did it because they were so delicious. Um,
- 1:05:28Speaker 1: and so that Marvin told, you know, was like, can
- 1:05:29Speaker 1: we should we name her after your grandma? And I
- 1:05:32Speaker 1: was like so moved. It meant so much to me
- 1:05:35Speaker 1: that he offered that, and and I was like, yeah,
- 1:05:38Speaker 1: I would love that, And so we named her named
- 1:05:40Speaker 1: the character Mo Mafina. And as we were developing the storyline,
- 1:05:43Speaker 1: we felt like the structure of the restaurant for Pop
- 1:05:48Speaker 1: needed to reen it used to be Pops tacos So
- 1:05:51Speaker 1: in the digital series, to be called Pops tacos Um.
- 1:05:54Speaker 1: But because we wanted the restaurant to be emblematic or
- 1:05:57Speaker 1: symbol of of his loss around his wife. We wanted
- 1:06:01Speaker 1: it his release, his need to go through this change
- 1:06:04Speaker 1: in his restaurant and his community. He needed to represent
- 1:06:08Speaker 1: him grieving his wife and finally releasing her. Um, we
- 1:06:12Speaker 1: felt like, okay, we should name the restaurant after his
- 1:06:16Speaker 1: wife so that it's very clear to people like, this
- 1:06:18Speaker 1: is what he's letting go. He's letting go of something
- 1:06:20Speaker 1: that meant so much to her and therefore meant so
- 1:06:23Speaker 1: much to him, and what this really means for him,
- 1:06:26Speaker 1: and then and then I think somewhere along the way
- 1:06:28Speaker 1: I were thinking production, it occurred to me. I was like,
- 1:06:30Speaker 1: oh my god, there's and I was like, I didn't
- 1:06:33Speaker 1: we didn't even think about the connection to it. But
- 1:06:35Speaker 1: my grandmother's name was actually the Fina, and so she was,
- 1:06:38Speaker 1: you know, Mama Fina is like she just is the
- 1:06:41Speaker 1: heart of my family, the modest family, which is like
- 1:06:43Speaker 1: my extended family called the mode of his family on
- 1:06:45Speaker 1: my mom my grandma's side. So we also named the
- 1:06:48Speaker 1: family after these my family's name for that. But yeah,
- 1:06:52Speaker 1: but it was a coincidence. But we love Coasafina. We
- 1:06:55Speaker 1: love you know. She was the you know, obviously real
- 1:06:58Speaker 1: women have curves as her her film and that was
- 1:07:02Speaker 1: America's first film and it was shotting Boil Heights and
- 1:07:04Speaker 1: it was it's such a beautiful, like bookend to her
- 1:07:06Speaker 1: and her career and going from like first time features
- 1:07:09Speaker 1: and actress to like her first series that she executive produced,
- 1:07:12Speaker 1: like it's such a failful journey to see and to witness.
- 1:07:16Speaker 1: Um yeah, that did you have anything else? My hm?
- 1:07:19Speaker 1: But that was that was the inception of that. No, no,
- 1:07:22Speaker 1: I mean it was like we were like when we
- 1:07:24Speaker 1: realized that the coincidence. I was like, oh, people are
- 1:07:26Speaker 1: definitely gonna think like it's a it's after Casafina. But
- 1:07:29Speaker 1: we're like, well, you know, that's not a bad connection
- 1:07:31Speaker 1: to be making at all. Definitely have like you know,
- 1:07:34Speaker 1: there's clearly inspired by completely other, much more personal connection
- 1:07:40Speaker 1: to it, and so um and I think that's what
- 1:07:42Speaker 1: we always were trying to do throughout this script, like
- 1:07:45Speaker 1: so many of the characters named, so many of the
- 1:07:47Speaker 1: specifics throughout, and the characters, the mentions of bakers who like,
- 1:07:51Speaker 1: we just put so much of our families and ourselves
- 1:07:54Speaker 1: and like just in every possible place that we could,
- 1:07:57Speaker 1: because oh, it's about our families, it's about our community,
- 1:08:01Speaker 1: and we wanted to like make it as personal as
- 1:08:02Speaker 1: we could, and so we might have just all our families,
- 1:08:05Speaker 1: like names are in there throughout. I have my aunt,
- 1:08:10Speaker 1: I have a named of Phillis. She's like, I'm not
- 1:08:13Speaker 1: like that, and I was like, yeah, she's not named
- 1:08:16Speaker 1: after you, like the liquor store owner. How many people,
- 1:08:21Speaker 1: how many people have told us like someone so let's
- 1:08:23Speaker 1: be some me, right, And I was just like, like
- 1:08:26Speaker 1: a writer gave that character name and it was so funny.
- 1:08:30Speaker 1: The ones that like are like negative portrayals are like
- 1:08:33Speaker 1: what's I'm not like that, And I'm like, is that
- 1:08:35Speaker 1: about you, guys, It's not about you. Pop is named
- 1:08:39Speaker 1: after my grand my grand and my girlfriend's grandfather, like
- 1:08:44Speaker 1: Needle and like. But he he used to have a
- 1:08:46Speaker 1: bakery in Long Beach and like so there was like
- 1:08:48Speaker 1: the black community there would start calling him Pop or
- 1:08:50Speaker 1: like they started calling him the poppets some what. It
- 1:08:52Speaker 1: just stuck and they still call him Pop. And I'd
- 1:08:54Speaker 1: never heard that. I was like, that's such a fun name,
- 1:08:56Speaker 1: Like I've never heard of Mexican grandfather named pop, like
- 1:08:59Speaker 1: you know, and I'm just so such a fun and
- 1:09:01Speaker 1: cast you know, such a unique name. And I was like,
- 1:09:03Speaker 1: I was like we Like, I was like, I love
- 1:09:04Speaker 1: to name it after after her grandfather because it's like
- 1:09:07Speaker 1: this patriarch of the family that's just like such a
- 1:09:12Speaker 1: I mean, it's such a beautiful family. I didn't grow
- 1:09:13Speaker 1: up with any men in my family, so it was
- 1:09:15Speaker 1: just like one of the only grandfather figure that I've
- 1:09:17Speaker 1: ever had around that you know, it is him, and uh.
- 1:09:20Speaker 1: And I was just like, yeah, like we should totally
- 1:09:22Speaker 1: name them, you know. Uh And so like there's just
- 1:09:24Speaker 1: so many different like things that we wanted to just keep.
- 1:09:28Speaker 1: We just like are constantly just trying to honor everybody
- 1:09:30Speaker 1: we know, and yeah, this is beautiful and okay, okay,
- 1:09:35Speaker 1: this is actually perfect because I feel like we are,
- 1:09:39Speaker 1: you know, born and raised in l A. We record
- 1:09:41Speaker 1: at Espasio eighteen thirty nine in boil Hikes, what we
- 1:09:44Speaker 1: used to record in boil hid in the old days
- 1:09:50Speaker 1: before days, before days. Um, in the before days. We
- 1:09:56Speaker 1: recorded on First Street in Mariachi Plaza at nine, and
- 1:10:00Speaker 1: I know that there's like Espasio gear that shows defied, right. Um,
- 1:10:06Speaker 1: we see Mariachi Plaza very prominently, and we know Mariachi
- 1:10:09Speaker 1: Plaza very well. And I feel like there was just
- 1:10:12Speaker 1: little nods throughout to what we believe maybe we're catching
- 1:10:16Speaker 1: onto like oh this is like based on this person
- 1:10:19Speaker 1: or so, and so we're this and that. So this
- 1:10:20Speaker 1: is this is cool because we have our inklings and
- 1:10:23Speaker 1: let's run them by you and see you. I like this,
- 1:10:27Speaker 1: let's see it. Okay, So okay, so boil Heights, right.
- 1:10:31Speaker 1: I think of especially with like DJs and parties of
- 1:10:35Speaker 1: like DJ Sizzle and Funky Catamello and Collective, which we
- 1:10:38Speaker 1: mentioned earlier. So there's a DJ in HNT defied. What
- 1:10:42Speaker 1: is she called? DJ MI? Huh? I think so he
- 1:10:46Speaker 1: name on her laptop. Yeah, so she When I saw
- 1:10:50Speaker 1: her playing and whatever episode it was, I immediately was like,
- 1:10:54Speaker 1: this feels like DJ Sizzle or Zuri or Funky Cattamelo
- 1:10:57Speaker 1: to me or Chili the Vinyl Club. Like how did
- 1:11:00Speaker 1: you these kind of little like very very boil Heights
- 1:11:03Speaker 1: characters who who how did you come up with them?
- 1:11:06Speaker 1: And what was the inspoke behind them? M m do
- 1:11:09Speaker 1: you want to speak to that one? Yeah? I mean
- 1:11:12Speaker 1: we I mean when we did the digital series, we
- 1:11:15Speaker 1: wrote the whole thing at um, what was on First
- 1:11:20Speaker 1: Street like that every day for like three or four months, um,
- 1:11:24Speaker 1: because we're like, well, let's be in the like, let's
- 1:11:26Speaker 1: be on the streets, like, let's be in the neighborhood.
- 1:11:28Speaker 1: Like let's like let the streets inspire us as we
- 1:11:30Speaker 1: are working on this and creating it, and like everybody
- 1:11:33Speaker 1: is based on like we said, there's specific family members
- 1:11:36Speaker 1: and ourselves are We're so our own psyches are ingrained
- 1:11:40Speaker 1: in so many different characters and like so there's a
- 1:11:42Speaker 1: lot of connections there from just our own personal stories
- 1:11:45Speaker 1: like um, and but being in the community and like
- 1:11:49Speaker 1: trying to and through all the research that we were doing,
- 1:11:51Speaker 1: I think there is like boil Heights is so eclectic
- 1:11:57Speaker 1: and beautiful and diverse and like in so many different personnel.
- 1:12:00Speaker 1: And I think like even whether it was subconscious or
- 1:12:03Speaker 1: or or not, like there was just a lot of people,
- 1:12:05Speaker 1: like a lot of images or little things and bits
- 1:12:08Speaker 1: and pieces that were just like I've never seen this
- 1:12:10Speaker 1: before on a TV show where it isn't like you
- 1:12:13Speaker 1: know about like a show set in in e. S
- 1:12:16Speaker 1: l A Or Ball high schools because I know they're
- 1:12:17Speaker 1: separate at all. Um, that isn't about a Latino neighborhood.
- 1:12:21Speaker 1: That isn't just full of just Cholipos, you know, like
- 1:12:23Speaker 1: it is just that like or that isn't just um,
- 1:12:26Speaker 1: you know, gang thing or whatever. It is like all
- 1:12:29Speaker 1: the stereotypes that were just so used to seeing and
- 1:12:31Speaker 1: there's just never that diversity. So I think we were
- 1:12:34Speaker 1: we were always just letting ourselves be inspired by you know,
- 1:12:38Speaker 1: like there the Chiliita Baticle. I don't know that that
- 1:12:40Speaker 1: was a specific reference. I don't even remember how because
- 1:12:43Speaker 1: I don't think the DJ because that was from episode six.
- 1:12:46Speaker 1: I believe when the money Actually I don't remember if
- 1:12:51Speaker 1: that was in the script. I think it might have
- 1:12:52Speaker 1: just a DJ and like the director probably just cast
- 1:12:54Speaker 1: somebody and wanted to pick a female DJ, which I
- 1:12:57Speaker 1: was like, I think, I don't. I remember showing up
- 1:12:59Speaker 1: and be like I was like, oh cool, like if
- 1:13:00Speaker 1: you like that cool long trade, I was like yeah, yeah,
- 1:13:03Speaker 1: And and so I think that there's a lot of stuff.
- 1:13:06Speaker 1: But what is so exciting is when we hear from
- 1:13:09Speaker 1: my hiding, they're like, oh my god, like this has
- 1:13:11Speaker 1: to be is this, this has to be a direct
- 1:13:12Speaker 1: relationship with this and this has to be I'm like, well,
- 1:13:14Speaker 1: I just feel like a great um uh not to
- 1:13:19Speaker 1: like how we let just all the different personalities and
- 1:13:23Speaker 1: and and the vibes and the subculture is really influenced
- 1:13:26Speaker 1: and penetry throughout the season. But I say the little
- 1:13:30Speaker 1: the little taco shop, not the talk shop. Sorry, um.
- 1:13:33Speaker 1: Bancho's Bar was inspired for us by the bar across
- 1:13:38Speaker 1: the street from Peter Prim's. How that is right next Toro.
- 1:13:44Speaker 1: I'm forgeting Why am I forgetting the name of the bar?
- 1:13:47Speaker 1: Is it looks is that what it's called? I don't
- 1:13:51Speaker 1: think it's almost I'm forgetting the name and now. It
- 1:13:54Speaker 1: was crazy is while we were there, we saw a
- 1:13:56Speaker 1: transition from like a more more like for the older
- 1:14:02Speaker 1: generation or for immigrant generation, immigrant folk who were going
- 1:14:05Speaker 1: there after work to drink um. But we saw I
- 1:14:10Speaker 1: think it was the owners when and like revamped it
- 1:14:12Speaker 1: while we were still working on the original digital series.
- 1:14:15Speaker 1: So we saw it closed down and then we were like,
- 1:14:17Speaker 1: oh no, it actually closed down as we were writing
- 1:14:20Speaker 1: in the original digital series partial storyline, and then they
- 1:14:23Speaker 1: revamped it. And then on the other side we came
- 1:14:26Speaker 1: in and we're like, oh, they like actually like changed
- 1:14:28Speaker 1: it around because they were trying to do the thing
- 1:14:30Speaker 1: that we had like been writing about already, so they
- 1:14:33Speaker 1: were they were trying to Yeah, they're trying to revamp
- 1:14:38Speaker 1: to bring in new client tell which was crazy because
- 1:14:41Speaker 1: we were in the process of writing that storyline in
- 1:14:43Speaker 1: our script and to see them actually doing that it
- 1:14:47Speaker 1: was like it was a while a lot of stuff
- 1:14:49Speaker 1: like that would happen where we would like discuss a
- 1:14:51Speaker 1: lot of stuff and then um, it would like come
- 1:14:54Speaker 1: to be or someone would tell us like that happened
- 1:14:56Speaker 1: to me, and we'd be like, oh, shoot, well we
- 1:14:59Speaker 1: put that together. There was like an a storyline with
- 1:15:02Speaker 1: them with the landlord that was inspired by a story
- 1:15:06Speaker 1: we heard, we read about or heard about in New
- 1:15:08Speaker 1: York where landlord had um done something to this building
- 1:15:15Speaker 1: where his tenant who was an immigrant woman. It wasn't
- 1:15:18Speaker 1: a mural or anything like that, but he basically in
- 1:15:20Speaker 1: the in the article or whatever we read, was like
- 1:15:23Speaker 1: I'm in charge, Like I say what goes. And I
- 1:15:25Speaker 1: remember that stuff with us as we were you know,
- 1:15:28Speaker 1: thinking about landlord characters. Yeah, like that, we were like,
- 1:15:32Speaker 1: you know, that's that's how a lot of landlords come
- 1:15:35Speaker 1: into spaces, as in like, you know, I own the building,
- 1:15:38Speaker 1: therefore I get to choose what happens versus seeing how
- 1:15:42Speaker 1: the tenant who's been there for so many years is
- 1:15:44Speaker 1: really the fabric of the community, not you, not you
- 1:15:47Speaker 1: with the money who go into the building. And and
- 1:15:49Speaker 1: that was a big discussion we had and then we
- 1:15:51Speaker 1: you know, it was really a lot of pieces of
- 1:15:53Speaker 1: different things, like we would hear stories from community members
- 1:15:56Speaker 1: and our research, and then we would like take what
- 1:15:59Speaker 1: we felt was like the heart of that and bring
- 1:16:02Speaker 1: it into certain storylines and in different episodes, and the
- 1:16:06Speaker 1: Maniati episode Obviously for us, there was a lot for
- 1:16:09Speaker 1: Aviat around like the Mariachi rent strike that we got
- 1:16:14Speaker 1: to experience when we're doing the digital series, and we
- 1:16:16Speaker 1: were able to bring Mariachi from that particular building to
- 1:16:20Speaker 1: our premier for Sundance when we wanted again to have
- 1:16:23Speaker 1: the community involved, and they played and we kind of
- 1:16:26Speaker 1: did a little bit of a social protest later situation
- 1:16:28Speaker 1: where they were performing, like you know the way that
- 1:16:30Speaker 1: you see Mariati performing all the time, thinking oh, how
- 1:16:34Speaker 1: nice they have performers, but then they coming on stage
- 1:16:36Speaker 1: and they're like, by the way, we're about to lose
- 1:16:38Speaker 1: their homes and like letting people know. And so when
- 1:16:41Speaker 1: we got to hear about their experience next to uh
- 1:16:44Speaker 1: Nancy mess up from different ball heights, like we got
- 1:16:47Speaker 1: to release only in the Vestinos at the time, UM,
- 1:16:51Speaker 1: we got to really see what they were experiencing it
- 1:16:54Speaker 1: and that definitely inspired for us VS. But we already
- 1:16:57Speaker 1: had the Mariachi um episode in the in the digital series,
- 1:17:02Speaker 1: so we already were talking about that, but as we
- 1:17:04Speaker 1: went into the TV series, we had much more context
- 1:17:07Speaker 1: for like what that I really was looking at because
- 1:17:10Speaker 1: we got to get even deeper into that conversation with
- 1:17:13Speaker 1: with all of them and oh, but I have to
- 1:17:15Speaker 1: say this, like I just remembered. I was like, but
- 1:17:17Speaker 1: you guys totally inspired us. And we even there was
- 1:17:20Speaker 1: a scene that we had to cut and we like
- 1:17:22Speaker 1: there was a line that we're like, oh my God
- 1:17:25Speaker 1: would be amazing for this, and like they would have
- 1:17:27Speaker 1: to be there. It was like what was the line?
- 1:17:29Speaker 1: It was like he don't want to scrub? Oh no,
- 1:17:34Speaker 1: she don't want to screw. Okay, So we really did
- 1:17:35Speaker 1: talk about this. So like Eric and Lydia, you know
- 1:17:39Speaker 1: that scene where she's like, I don't you know, go
- 1:17:40Speaker 1: take care of Pop. It's like the second episode where
- 1:17:43Speaker 1: she's like He's like, yeah, I'm not your baby anymore.
- 1:17:45Speaker 1: You but no, I'm talking about the baby like that.
- 1:17:46Speaker 1: That's in the bar at on the street and there
- 1:17:51Speaker 1: was these two women who are outside and then like
- 1:17:54Speaker 1: they basically talked on Eric and they're like you don't
- 1:17:56Speaker 1: she don't want to scrub or something else? Did they
- 1:17:58Speaker 1: say something really any to each other? To him and
- 1:18:01Speaker 1: he's just like man and like so and Marvin was
- 1:18:04Speaker 1: always like I want to I want to give money,
- 1:18:06Speaker 1: also have to do that. I think they would really
- 1:18:07Speaker 1: be really funny there. I think it was supposed to.
- 1:18:10Speaker 1: It was just one girl in the scene and the
- 1:18:17Speaker 1: season two definitely I listen, I saw I saw that
- 1:18:22Speaker 1: Twitter Twitter thread. I was like, okay, ready, it's a
- 1:18:27Speaker 1: brandy every but I was like, okay, no. But we
- 1:18:29Speaker 1: are like that. We very much are always thinking about
- 1:18:31Speaker 1: who can we put into things from the community because
- 1:18:35Speaker 1: I don't know, because it's it's more it's cool, it's fun,
- 1:18:37Speaker 1: but it's just I think for us, we wish we
- 1:18:40Speaker 1: could have done even more of it in for a season.
- 1:18:41Speaker 1: We hope we can if we get a second season,
- 1:18:43Speaker 1: do more. But like being able to show the real
- 1:18:45Speaker 1: the real folks from the community in the series, I
- 1:18:48Speaker 1: think is really important. And I think we had a
- 1:18:51Speaker 1: scene early on there was similar to Up in the Air,
- 1:18:55Speaker 1: Up in the Air, the movie Up in the Air. Yeah,
- 1:18:59Speaker 1: I mean we we did a little bit of it
- 1:19:01Speaker 1: in the digital series and we never got to kind
- 1:19:03Speaker 1: of red redo it in the show. But um, up
- 1:19:06Speaker 1: in the Air the George Clooney movie where he has
- 1:19:08Speaker 1: to fly around firing people and all that. Um, they
- 1:19:12Speaker 1: did this like it's like, I mean, it's not It's
- 1:19:14Speaker 1: not the first time they had done it, but he
- 1:19:15Speaker 1: did this documentary kind of style opening where they had
- 1:19:19Speaker 1: real people that got fired from their like long time
- 1:19:23Speaker 1: jobs on camera, like kind of pretending like what would
- 1:19:26Speaker 1: you say to your boss, Like if you could, like
- 1:19:28Speaker 1: if you could go back and do that over again,
- 1:19:29Speaker 1: what we just say, and like you get people like
- 1:19:31Speaker 1: they're not actors, they're real people, but they're like did
- 1:19:34Speaker 1: they get into it? One person broke out into hives,
- 1:19:37Speaker 1: Like you can see it if you watch the movie again,
- 1:19:39Speaker 1: because like just living that the trauma of that and
- 1:19:42Speaker 1: like having to get like go from there, like you know,
- 1:19:45Speaker 1: and freaking out and thinking about how they're gonna take
- 1:19:47Speaker 1: care of their families and all that stuff. And I
- 1:19:49Speaker 1: mean we we ended up doing something like it in
- 1:19:51Speaker 1: the digital series. It was such an inspiration where like
- 1:19:53Speaker 1: we're talking about like landed that are dealing with displacement
- 1:19:57Speaker 1: and rant and all the stuff, and it's just something
- 1:19:59Speaker 1: we're like, you know, especially because we are so conscious
- 1:20:02Speaker 1: of the fact that like we are telling a story
- 1:20:05Speaker 1: that's very specific about a very specific neighborhood, about an
- 1:20:08Speaker 1: issue that is currently going on and in the community
- 1:20:12Speaker 1: that like loves themselves and has a lot to say
- 1:20:14Speaker 1: about it, and we're like we want to, like we
- 1:20:16Speaker 1: did with the premier of the digital series, and we're
- 1:20:18Speaker 1: always trying to figure out, like how can we like
- 1:20:20Speaker 1: hand off the mic, Like how can we let the
- 1:20:22Speaker 1: community speak for themselves? And like that's one way that
- 1:20:24Speaker 1: we keep thinking about, like what are those ways that
- 1:20:26Speaker 1: we're going to be infusing the real hint they into
- 1:20:30Speaker 1: the show and so that we're always kind of like
- 1:20:32Speaker 1: so that we are we're not just contributing to the
- 1:20:38Speaker 1: problem or just amplifying and letting people think like, oh,
- 1:20:40Speaker 1: wells is cool, like I should move there. I'm like,
- 1:20:42Speaker 1: that's not accomplished, Like we want people to really and
- 1:20:45Speaker 1: I think we are accomplishing it. We've seen so many
- 1:20:48Speaker 1: people start to talk about I'm thinking about getrification differently.
- 1:20:52Speaker 1: I'm seeing my neighbors in a different way. I'm looking
- 1:20:54Speaker 1: at this issue in a way that I didn't understand
- 1:20:56Speaker 1: it before because it's become so human, it's so personal
- 1:20:59Speaker 1: to me. Like I just because I've watched you know,
- 1:21:01Speaker 1: this family, this small business, like they're thinking about small
- 1:21:04Speaker 1: business in a different way, and like I think that
- 1:21:06Speaker 1: that is what we want and that is what we're
- 1:21:08Speaker 1: tending Like that is where our activism and comes through
- 1:21:11Speaker 1: in our artwork of like where our responsibility as storytellers
- 1:21:15Speaker 1: is not too like we're not here to we want to.
- 1:21:18Speaker 1: We'd like we were good at cracking jokes and we
- 1:21:21Speaker 1: want to entertain, you know. At the same time, like
- 1:21:24Speaker 1: we hope that we're leaving people with questions and especially
- 1:21:27Speaker 1: some uncomfortable ones that people need to be asking themselves, uh,
- 1:21:32Speaker 1: and and thinking about about where what our roles are
- 1:21:35Speaker 1: in this and like what are we doing and are
- 1:21:38Speaker 1: we being complicit or in how do we work against them?
- 1:21:41Speaker 1: Like how do we how do we help versus? How
- 1:21:43Speaker 1: do you be better neighbors? Is what I always say,
- 1:21:45Speaker 1: and so um so yeah, I think, Uh, that's like
- 1:21:50Speaker 1: I think that's always the goal for us. It's always
- 1:21:52Speaker 1: the goal of like what we're doing and how like
- 1:21:55Speaker 1: Annah for me and Linda, where the intersection of our
- 1:21:58Speaker 1: art and activism really always fall trying to find that
- 1:22:01Speaker 1: balance between the two. Yeah, I think that's such an
- 1:22:04Speaker 1: important conversation, the piece about antification within our age group
- 1:22:10Speaker 1: because we're statistically I believe we're making more money than
- 1:22:14Speaker 1: our parents have ever made and so we have different
- 1:22:17Speaker 1: opportunities now and we're able to maybe leave our neighborhoods
- 1:22:20Speaker 1: and move elsewhere. So how are we as brown people
- 1:22:24Speaker 1: or people of color playing the role in gentrification? Right? So,
- 1:22:28Speaker 1: I like, I love that you talked you mentioned right
- 1:22:30Speaker 1: now that folks are thinking about their neighbors and their
- 1:22:33Speaker 1: neighborhood and small businesses differently, because I mean ultimately, like
- 1:22:37Speaker 1: I I can't speak for you, obviously, obviously, but I
- 1:22:39Speaker 1: feel like that's a part of your goal for the
- 1:22:42Speaker 1: series of Antified is to get part of the conversation
- 1:22:46Speaker 1: right and have people look at even like what they're doing. Yeah,
- 1:22:51Speaker 1: I know all the questions that we pose in the
- 1:22:54Speaker 1: series are questions that we were asking ourselves the whole time.
- 1:22:57Speaker 1: Like it's what brought us to the series, you know,
- 1:23:00Speaker 1: like asking ourselves like because we grew up um like
- 1:23:05Speaker 1: CARDI B. I grew up very close to like let
- 1:23:09Speaker 1: me preface that with like like the home Girl, Now,
- 1:23:12Speaker 1: we grew up very close to being poor, you know,
- 1:23:14Speaker 1: Like I know what it's like to be like mom wise,
- 1:23:15Speaker 1: the water so like our whys the milk so clear
- 1:23:18Speaker 1: that you poured water into it's that could last longer, Like,
- 1:23:21Speaker 1: you know, I know what it's like to turn on
- 1:23:23Speaker 1: the lights and see this cock roaw just scat scatter,
- 1:23:25Speaker 1: and and to be embarrassed because I've been wearing the
- 1:23:27Speaker 1: same pair of sneakers for the second year in a row.
- 1:23:29Speaker 1: Like I know the feeling of what it means to
- 1:23:32Speaker 1: be poor, and I know what it means to see
- 1:23:34Speaker 1: my parents mia those or I don't know what the
- 1:23:37Speaker 1: word is in English, like me to feel less than
- 1:23:39Speaker 1: like I've seen them be made to feel less than
- 1:23:41Speaker 1: in front of me. I I've I've had to experience
- 1:23:44Speaker 1: like being the voice for them and difficult situations, and
- 1:23:47Speaker 1: I know what oppression looks like. And because of that,
- 1:23:51Speaker 1: and and Marmon does too, and and I think because
- 1:23:53Speaker 1: of that, when you do come into power or money
- 1:23:56Speaker 1: or um, you know, just upward mobility, and you're doing
- 1:24:00Speaker 1: in And we talked about this a lot, because you've
- 1:24:02Speaker 1: been instilled with that American dream of like, we gotta
- 1:24:04Speaker 1: help our families out of this poverty. UM. You start
- 1:24:07Speaker 1: to come into that and then you see the world differently.
- 1:24:09Speaker 1: You're like, oh, I get my contributing to this issue.
- 1:24:12Speaker 1: And and that was the place where it suddenly it
- 1:24:15Speaker 1: becomes like it's becomes a little tortures because you're you're
- 1:24:18Speaker 1: working within this system that like you don't have control over,
- 1:24:21Speaker 1: Like you're you're not the one who created capitalism, You're
- 1:24:24Speaker 1: not the one who created all these structures, but you're
- 1:24:27Speaker 1: being asked to perform in them. You know, it's a
- 1:24:30Speaker 1: very performative experience. But then also you know what that
- 1:24:34Speaker 1: impact means for communities that have less than you, because
- 1:24:38Speaker 1: you've lived it. So it's like, how do you reconcile
- 1:24:41Speaker 1: about how do you live between those worlds, between between
- 1:24:45Speaker 1: those class class stratas or whatever. And it's something that
- 1:24:49Speaker 1: we're all familiar with, especially because we live between worlds
- 1:24:52Speaker 1: like since birth, like being you know, let you know
- 1:24:55Speaker 1: Latino and or whether you're Mexican or I don't know
- 1:24:57Speaker 1: your specific backgrounds, but like from my Mexican watermelon and
- 1:25:01Speaker 1: an American like us, living between boarders is like kind
- 1:25:03Speaker 1: of the core of who we are and we're always
- 1:25:06Speaker 1: trying to straddle those two and and it's it's, uh,
- 1:25:10Speaker 1: takes a toll. And so I think, like when we
- 1:25:13Speaker 1: started thinking about the series, it was like, how do
- 1:25:14Speaker 1: we pose these questions in a way that allows people
- 1:25:18Speaker 1: to have empathy, compassion and also hold themselves accountable in
- 1:25:24Speaker 1: this process because you know, for us, it's always the
- 1:25:27Speaker 1: series first and foremost is for our community, and for
- 1:25:30Speaker 1: the community of Bottle Heights always is going to be
- 1:25:31Speaker 1: first for them, and then secondary is folks who are
- 1:25:35Speaker 1: complicit and and some of these violent displacing situations that
- 1:25:41Speaker 1: happen and it's not you know a lot of times
- 1:25:44Speaker 1: people are unaware of how it's happening and how they're
- 1:25:46Speaker 1: doing it, and it's like, Okay, well, here's here's some
- 1:25:49Speaker 1: here's some information for you, like in a digestible, little
- 1:25:53Speaker 1: thirty minute episode, and like, now go ask yourself these
- 1:25:56Speaker 1: questions because you're a good person, Like, you know, I
- 1:25:58Speaker 1: think we come from this place that we think most
- 1:26:00Speaker 1: people are good people. Like there's a few villains out
- 1:26:02Speaker 1: there who are real evil people, one of them in
- 1:26:04Speaker 1: the White House. Like you know that most people are
- 1:26:07Speaker 1: good people and most people don't want to hurt others.
- 1:26:11Speaker 1: And so when you put that in front of them
- 1:26:12Speaker 1: and say, hey, now you have this info, what are
- 1:26:14Speaker 1: you gonna do with it? Um, you hope that things
- 1:26:17Speaker 1: will change. And I think that was our intention from
- 1:26:19Speaker 1: the beginning, that we reach people in different in a
- 1:26:22Speaker 1: different way than they're usually reached and hopefully that makes
- 1:26:25Speaker 1: an impact of some sort, and it looks like it has,
- 1:26:28Speaker 1: which is the wild part thing for us. We always
- 1:26:31Speaker 1: like when we start seeing people like having up their
- 1:26:33Speaker 1: small businesses and seeing small businesses like hashtag not for
- 1:26:38Speaker 1: sale and like start to say, like, you know, come support.
- 1:26:41Speaker 1: We're gonna do a screening and everyone's bringing their their
- 1:26:44Speaker 1: favorite dish from their local business because we're gonna help support.
- 1:26:47Speaker 1: Like that ship was beautiful, like it Like that's the
- 1:26:50Speaker 1: stuff that for us is like that matters more than
- 1:26:52Speaker 1: any of the Hollywood bullshit or interviews or photo shoots,
- 1:26:56Speaker 1: Like we do all that steps to like you know,
- 1:26:58Speaker 1: promote the show, but at the end of the day,
- 1:26:59Speaker 1: we hear from our people how it's impacting them. That's
- 1:27:03Speaker 1: that's the beautiful. So that's what keeps us going. You know, Yeah,
- 1:27:07Speaker 1: that's amazing. Marvin, would you like to add I was
- 1:27:12Speaker 1: gonna I was, No, Lynda ended up hitting exactly what
- 1:27:14Speaker 1: I was gonna add, which is the idea of I mean,
- 1:27:17Speaker 1: because there are you know, we we have these were
- 1:27:19Speaker 1: heavy as fucking We're constantly thinking about like, oh my god,
- 1:27:22Speaker 1: are we doing the right thing. But then I think
- 1:27:23Speaker 1: that there's a lot of people we're our parents, especially
- 1:27:27Speaker 1: if you have parents, but it just in general, we're
- 1:27:29Speaker 1: taught to chase that American dream, and like we chase
- 1:27:32Speaker 1: it so hard and we it's ingrained in us to
- 1:27:35Speaker 1: chase it. And then there's a lot of people that
- 1:27:39Speaker 1: haven't even stopped to even consider some of these questions.
- 1:27:42Speaker 1: And so we you know, we definitely have our opinions,
- 1:27:45Speaker 1: but we were hoping that with the show, we were
- 1:27:47Speaker 1: trying to like, let's just pose the questions and we're
- 1:27:49Speaker 1: not going to try and assume any answers because we
- 1:27:51Speaker 1: want people to walk away from me. Like Linda was
- 1:27:53Speaker 1: just saying, like for these for some folks for the
- 1:27:56Speaker 1: first time asking the question of like oh ship, like
- 1:27:58Speaker 1: it might participating even this way, like what is my
- 1:28:02Speaker 1: role in this? And so um, because like like Linda
- 1:28:06Speaker 1: was saying, like, yeah, I think most people once they're
- 1:28:08Speaker 1: aware of it. Yeah, I mean, look, I just put
- 1:28:10Speaker 1: it perfectly. I was like, I don't know what else
- 1:28:12Speaker 1: I have to add to that. It was just, um,
- 1:28:15Speaker 1: such a it was just everything that we wanted. It
- 1:28:17Speaker 1: was everything that we intended it for it to be,
- 1:28:19Speaker 1: like you're saying, like for it to like then all
- 1:28:21Speaker 1: the tweets coming back and seeing like, oh my god,
- 1:28:23Speaker 1: before like like are saying and asking all the things
- 1:28:27Speaker 1: that we were hoping that they would ask her, like
- 1:28:29Speaker 1: feeling all the ways that we intended them to feel
- 1:28:31Speaker 1: Like it's overwhelming. Like we had the vision of like,
- 1:28:35Speaker 1: this is what we think we're gonna be able to
- 1:28:36Speaker 1: do what we can do, and we sort of guy,
- 1:28:37Speaker 1: we're gonna make this thing that we've never seen before,
- 1:28:39Speaker 1: and then for it to like start to hit, we're like,
- 1:28:41Speaker 1: oh ship, Like okay, Like it feels weird. It was
- 1:28:43Speaker 1: like a dream. It feels surreal. So um, we're incredibly
- 1:28:46Speaker 1: fortunate to be able to get to do it on
- 1:28:48Speaker 1: a place like the Netflix where we get to like
- 1:28:50Speaker 1: literally all over the world. Um, and it's doing so
- 1:28:53Speaker 1: damn well here in Mexico and like fucking it's just
- 1:28:57Speaker 1: amazing where I feel like Selena, you know what I mean,
- 1:29:01Speaker 1: wow here, like he evokes Lina's over here, making making big,
- 1:29:14Speaker 1: making it happen, and both so yes or no, we
- 1:29:21Speaker 1: are in the midst of like a Latin X film
- 1:29:24Speaker 1: and television art renaissance. Yeah, I think so. I mean
- 1:29:29Speaker 1: when we started, when we started this process like there
- 1:29:31Speaker 1: was like one no, not even because Gloria had to
- 1:29:35Speaker 1: come out. We met Gloria right before her show launch.
- 1:29:39Speaker 1: Remember she was she was, she was almost There was
- 1:29:42Speaker 1: one before that. There was the one which was the
- 1:29:46Speaker 1: only thing, but that was on the streaming but that
- 1:29:49Speaker 1: was a streaming SERI yeah, it was. It wasn't. It
- 1:29:53Speaker 1: wasn't technically like it kind of turned into a half hour.
- 1:29:57Speaker 1: We did, it turned into a half hour. It's most
- 1:30:03Speaker 1: high walked, so everyone else corrupt exactly. I mean, for
- 1:30:12Speaker 1: that was a huge part of the inspiration for for
- 1:30:14Speaker 1: making the digital series, where I was like, I was like, Okay,
- 1:30:16Speaker 1: this is a show, like I want to make something.
- 1:30:20Speaker 1: Let me make something. Let me make the thing I
- 1:30:21Speaker 1: want to watch for sure. Yeah, that's really Yeah, Like
- 1:30:25Speaker 1: when we started local in there were very few Latina
- 1:30:31Speaker 1: duo podcasts, just like general, like there were very few,
- 1:30:36Speaker 1: and now there's like there's been like people say, like
- 1:30:39Speaker 1: a podcast boom, you know, even though podcasting has been
- 1:30:42Speaker 1: around for many years, um, but I think in the
- 1:30:44Speaker 1: last couple of years and there's definitely been a boom.
- 1:30:47Speaker 1: So yeah, I mean when we started there were very few,
- 1:30:50Speaker 1: and like now there's a ton which you know, for
- 1:30:53Speaker 1: better or for worse, better for better for worse. There's
- 1:30:56Speaker 1: a ton you know. And I mean that in the
- 1:30:59Speaker 1: best say. I don't mean listen, I didn't like, we'll
- 1:31:05Speaker 1: get drinks at some point and we'll really get into
- 1:31:07Speaker 1: it all the all the all the shame faddle um,
- 1:31:12Speaker 1: because that's all what I love to do. That's my
- 1:31:14Speaker 1: love language faddle. But what I what what has happened
- 1:31:21Speaker 1: is like I mean, things like me to, things like battle,
- 1:31:24Speaker 1: like all the all the stuff that shot that next
- 1:31:28Speaker 1: has been being able to gather you guys, the the
- 1:31:32Speaker 1: culture that is now that we have, like for the
- 1:31:35Speaker 1: Latin X community, that was just not that was not
- 1:31:38Speaker 1: a thing growing up And for me personally, I talked
- 1:31:41Speaker 1: about this all the time because this is where I
- 1:31:42Speaker 1: differ from I'm very much a Chris. I'm the whitewashed one.
- 1:31:45Speaker 1: I'm the one that grew up being like I don't
- 1:31:47Speaker 1: want to be Mexican like that means I don't want
- 1:31:49Speaker 1: to be successful. That means I don't want to be
- 1:31:50Speaker 1: stuck in Bakersfield like that. Those things that I internalized
- 1:31:54Speaker 1: because we didn't have things like me to, because all
- 1:31:57Speaker 1: we had, which I credit with so much. But all
- 1:32:00Speaker 1: we had was George Lopez, which like, you know, there's
- 1:32:02Speaker 1: a ceiling to that. Um, I mean he opened up
- 1:32:06Speaker 1: so much for my fiddle. Um. The George has also
- 1:32:12Speaker 1: had yes, he yes, um. The but this culture that
- 1:32:18Speaker 1: we've had, I mean, like we're just so excited that
- 1:32:20Speaker 1: we're like, oh, like when the years started and all
- 1:32:23Speaker 1: these shows started to drop, We're like, holy sh it,
- 1:32:24Speaker 1: Like we thought we would be like one more on
- 1:32:27Speaker 1: top of what to three other shows that that were around,
- 1:32:30Speaker 1: and now we're like like it's like upwards to ten,
- 1:32:32Speaker 1: I mean, and it can still be like we need more.
- 1:32:34Speaker 1: We need more because like I want my sci fis,
- 1:32:36Speaker 1: I want my like my like alms on all the genres.
- 1:32:40Speaker 1: And this is something that we've been saying in other interviews.
- 1:32:42Speaker 1: It's like it's a little frustrating for us because I'm like, yo,
- 1:32:46Speaker 1: like you know, there's some press and there's some reviews
- 1:32:48Speaker 1: where I'm like, we get compared to other Latin X shows,
- 1:32:51Speaker 1: and I'm like, latin X is in the genre, Like well,
- 1:32:53Speaker 1: I don't know why just because it's like starring brown
- 1:32:56Speaker 1: folks like doesn't mean that it's even like in this
- 1:33:00Speaker 1: same ballpark of tone, you know, like, and it's so
- 1:33:02Speaker 1: frustrating that that's the box that we end up getting
- 1:33:04Speaker 1: put in, especially when like the shows that were so inspiring,
- 1:33:08Speaker 1: like for our specific tone and our specific show and
- 1:33:10Speaker 1: stories that we were telling was like Master of None,
- 1:33:13Speaker 1: uh Atlanta, you know, Insecure, like it was like these
- 1:33:18Speaker 1: other drama tase that like we we were were speaking
- 1:33:21Speaker 1: to us as like first game kids, as kids that
- 1:33:23Speaker 1: come from low income backgrounds, like you know, it spoke
- 1:33:26Speaker 1: to us in a very different way because we hadn't
- 1:33:29Speaker 1: seen our stories told that way yet. And so anyways,
- 1:33:32Speaker 1: all that to say what you guys are doing was
- 1:33:35Speaker 1: at least for myself and I'm sure for Linda. I'm
- 1:33:37Speaker 1: not trying to exclude her. I'm sure I'm speaking I
- 1:33:40Speaker 1: say this um is so inspirational. It has been a
- 1:33:44Speaker 1: huge part of like, oh, I want to do that
- 1:33:46Speaker 1: with my work too. I want to create and I
- 1:33:48Speaker 1: want to so the culture in the same way that
- 1:33:51Speaker 1: you guys are doing it. Because you guys are doing
- 1:33:53Speaker 1: and this is also like me as a picky motherfucker,
- 1:33:55Speaker 1: like you guys have done it so well. You guys
- 1:33:58Speaker 1: have done so Like when I was doing my dig
- 1:34:00Speaker 1: th stuff like I was doing a lot of digital
- 1:34:01Speaker 1: sketch comedy and everything, but my gold was always like,
- 1:34:04Speaker 1: I need to make this even if I have no money,
- 1:34:06Speaker 1: I need to make it look as expensive as possible.
- 1:34:08Speaker 1: And you guys, I don't know what your budgets are.
- 1:34:11Speaker 1: I'm spending all this ship, but it looks expensive it always. Yeah,
- 1:34:18Speaker 1: that's how you do it. That's how you make it
- 1:34:21Speaker 1: look baller, you know what I mean? And so, and
- 1:34:23Speaker 1: that's what makes everybody want to show the like yo,
- 1:34:25Speaker 1: like hold on, like this is a this is like
- 1:34:28Speaker 1: a Latino thing or a Latin next thing, but it
- 1:34:29Speaker 1: doesn't look like it looks like money, Like I want
- 1:34:31Speaker 1: to go like, you know what I mean, This is
- 1:34:33Speaker 1: like essence festive. Thank you for that. We call it
- 1:34:39Speaker 1: dollar treat d I y um. We make it look
- 1:34:45Speaker 1: good no matter what. Um, so thank you. Do have
- 1:34:49Speaker 1: one final question? Okay, So I was on Instagram right
- 1:34:54Speaker 1: before the premiere, beforehand if I drop, and there's a
- 1:34:57Speaker 1: clip right where um where they're talking about oh uh
- 1:35:03Speaker 1: chi kind of feminist podcast. And then we watched the
- 1:35:05Speaker 1: show and we hear that she kind of feminist podcast voiceover,
- 1:35:08Speaker 1: and I send it to Yosa and I'm like, so
- 1:35:11Speaker 1: is this us or I mean we wrote it when
- 1:35:18Speaker 1: we started recording, or like does this sound like look
- 1:35:20Speaker 1: like we're like pe, So it was. I mean, I'm
- 1:35:24Speaker 1: sure there's a little bit of inspider, like subconsciously it's
- 1:35:27Speaker 1: inspired by you guys. Really, Yes, it's somebuddy that is
- 1:35:33Speaker 1: my cameo that nobody catches. Me and Stephanie are the
- 1:35:37Speaker 1: voices of that podcast. Yeah, I have to go back
- 1:35:41Speaker 1: and listen. Yeah, I go back and listen because we
- 1:35:44Speaker 1: got into it, like Marmon directed us in the in
- 1:35:46Speaker 1: the post room for that, and like I remember, it
- 1:35:49Speaker 1: was just like we needed to talk about just like
- 1:35:51Speaker 1: men being trashed and we're like, oh, that's easy, it's
- 1:35:54Speaker 1: pretty Yes. So I'm show we channeled a lot of
- 1:35:59Speaker 1: a lot of y'all in a lot of inglewood in
- 1:36:01Speaker 1: our walk, you know, because that's where it stops from. Absolutely,
- 1:36:05Speaker 1: you heard it here first. Next time, next time we'll
- 1:36:10Speaker 1: get the real deal. I will say, Like it was
- 1:36:20Speaker 1: like it took him a couple of deck The first
- 1:36:22Speaker 1: couple of takes, they were a little nervous, and then
- 1:36:23Speaker 1: they really got into it and then they like just
- 1:36:24Speaker 1: wouldn't stop. And I was like, oh, I want to
- 1:36:27Speaker 1: see this. I was like Stephan Linda doing a podcast.
- 1:36:29Speaker 1: I want to see that too. I was like, it
- 1:36:31Speaker 1: needs to be a mashup. Yea the super podcast. Let's
- 1:36:37Speaker 1: see the podcast some of the podcasts for Better for Worse?
- 1:36:40Speaker 1: You know we lost, Yes, that is the queen, happy
- 1:36:48Speaker 1: for her out of her Yes, I'm like, you know,
- 1:36:52Speaker 1: I know we're wrapping up, but that's like another example
- 1:36:55Speaker 1: of how y'all brought in a like real last community member,
- 1:37:00Speaker 1: you know that, And it's like up in common. You know,
- 1:37:03Speaker 1: we met stefinitely through me too, and like just when
- 1:37:05Speaker 1: we met her, we were like we just really saw
- 1:37:09Speaker 1: a lot of ourselves in her and also saw the
- 1:37:12Speaker 1: hustle like there's just like there's something in I mean,
- 1:37:16Speaker 1: this is good advice, I think for folks out there
- 1:37:17Speaker 1: who are trying to get into filmmaking and stuff, like
- 1:37:19Speaker 1: if you can show that you are going to get
- 1:37:22Speaker 1: it done, like, those are the people that like I
- 1:37:24Speaker 1: like to invest in because you know, like we can't
- 1:37:29Speaker 1: you know, do things for people, Like we can't take
- 1:37:31Speaker 1: people's hands and force them to do things. We can
- 1:37:33Speaker 1: mentor and we can give advice, but when you see
- 1:37:36Speaker 1: people who like hustle and get it done. Like, those
- 1:37:39Speaker 1: are the people that I love to mentor because I
- 1:37:41Speaker 1: know that they're gonna be evolving, they're gonna take the advice,
- 1:37:45Speaker 1: they're gonna use it. It's gonna like really help build them.
- 1:37:48Speaker 1: Not that I'm not gonna like mentor folks who aren't
- 1:37:50Speaker 1: hustling like that. There's that too right there where you
- 1:37:52Speaker 1: need support and help in that area too. But um,
- 1:37:55Speaker 1: you know, Stephanie was just like such a little badass
- 1:37:58Speaker 1: and we're like, we would like you, let's let's let's
- 1:38:00Speaker 1: you know, start working today. It has been like go, god,
- 1:38:02Speaker 1: I don't know, like three years now probably right, yeah, yeah,
- 1:38:06Speaker 1: And then we just you know, for us to bring
- 1:38:08Speaker 1: her into every space and also you know, being who
- 1:38:11Speaker 1: we are, like in this industry, like there's not a
- 1:38:14Speaker 1: lot of us. And and when I say us, it's
- 1:38:16Speaker 1: not only being Latino Latino X, it's also having a
- 1:38:20Speaker 1: low income background, feeling that connection to um otherness that's
- 1:38:24Speaker 1: in a very different way. Um, there's not a lot
- 1:38:27Speaker 1: of those type of Latin X in the industry necessarily
- 1:38:30Speaker 1: or who speak our type of language. You talk about
- 1:38:33Speaker 1: things in a very different way. And I think for us,
- 1:38:35Speaker 1: Like we've leaned really hard into trying to mentor folks
- 1:38:40Speaker 1: who have those backgrounds because it's a lot harder for
- 1:38:42Speaker 1: us to get in, like to this industry, we don't
- 1:38:44Speaker 1: have the same privileges or access or money or connections.
- 1:38:48Speaker 1: And so you know, we're always trying to mentor in
- 1:38:51Speaker 1: that space. And that's why we always talk about being
- 1:38:53Speaker 1: a low income because we want to take the shame
- 1:38:54Speaker 1: out of that. We want to say like like that's
- 1:38:56Speaker 1: not a bad thing, Like I'm going to claim that
- 1:38:58Speaker 1: hard and you know what, like there are certain obstacles
- 1:39:01Speaker 1: that are that we have to come up again so
- 1:39:03Speaker 1: you don't and so we need to talk about those
- 1:39:05Speaker 1: things so that we can get our people into these
- 1:39:07Speaker 1: spaces so they can tell their stories. Because if we
- 1:39:09Speaker 1: don't acknowledge the walls that are there, the walls are
- 1:39:12Speaker 1: never gonna come down. Like we gotta we gotta talk
- 1:39:14Speaker 1: about the walls and and we have to bring those
- 1:39:17Speaker 1: people up. So for me, like Steven has become the
- 1:39:20Speaker 1: home like she's like a best see now like she
- 1:39:21Speaker 1: we we talked about everything, and I can't wait for
- 1:39:24Speaker 1: neither one of us can't wait for her, for her show,
- 1:39:27Speaker 1: for her movie and so many others like her, and
- 1:39:29Speaker 1: then for us, like we we always tell people will
- 1:39:32Speaker 1: be he says, don't just like that. I always saying.
