- 0:10Speaker 1: Welcome back to those amigos.
- 0:12Speaker 2: I Wilmer Valderama and I am Freddie Rodriguez.
- 0:16Speaker 3: That's what and uh and today we officially are three amigos.
- 0:21Speaker 3: Welcome named back.
- 0:22Speaker 1: Are our brother for gret so for Grace in the house? Yes,
- 0:26Speaker 1: thank you man?
- 0:26Speaker 4: Were you and can Harley?
- 0:27Speaker 1: Wait?
- 0:28Speaker 4: I was, yeah, okay, please cut all this out, man.
- 0:31Speaker 4: If this is where that group of knuckleheads I was
- 0:34Speaker 4: friends with in college who Wilmer's met a couple of them.
- 0:39Speaker 4: Another Dare situation was we snuck into the oscars because
- 0:44Speaker 4: the shrine auditorium where the oscars used to happen was
- 0:46Speaker 4: right across the street from our dorm, Harnerment, and so
- 0:50Speaker 4: we rented. Like I'm drinking looking down on it, We're like,
- 0:54Speaker 4: I bet we could just like take a limo and
- 0:56Speaker 4: just drive into that tomorrow. This is pre nine eleven city. God,
- 1:01Speaker 4: So we rented it. We called a limo place, and
- 1:03Speaker 4: they're like, no, the limos are all booked, it's the Oscar.
- 1:06Speaker 4: But I was like, give me a hundred bucks, I'll
- 1:08Speaker 4: come around the block and pick you up. And so
- 1:10Speaker 4: we went and rented uh like tuxedos. No, we didn't
- 1:15Speaker 4: have enough money for tuxedos. We rented bow ties and
- 1:19Speaker 4: then wore black jackets and black pants got in this.
- 1:23Speaker 4: It turns out, by the way, it was like whoever's
- 1:25Speaker 4: limo it was had their credentials in it. So it's
- 1:27Speaker 4: like Nicole Kimmon took it there, it had hurt credentials.
- 1:30Speaker 4: So we came around and got us. So we got
- 1:31Speaker 4: through the barricade, no way. We just walked out the
- 1:34Speaker 4: red carpet. We were waving and everyone everyone was like
- 1:36Speaker 4: kind of like, who's that. Like, we just I we
- 1:39Speaker 4: had a roll you know those roll up cameras and we're
- 1:41Speaker 4: taking pictures of ourselves and anyway, oh, we were doing
- 1:44Speaker 4: crazy stuff like that. We just sat and watch like
- 1:46Speaker 4: you know, Matt and ben Wan and Titanic wait so
- 1:50Speaker 4: in oh, yeah, the whole the audience is only seed fillers,
- 1:55Speaker 4: Like it's only the first five rows that have the
- 1:56Speaker 4: biggest stars in the world. And then you know it's
- 1:58Speaker 4: so we were I was like sitting behind and share
- 2:00Speaker 4: and like I remember I took a piss next to
- 2:03Speaker 4: Gregory Peck because he was like at the urinal next
- 2:06Speaker 4: to me. That's some crazy story. So we were like
- 2:09Speaker 4: Hollywood's fun, and I didn't feel like, you know, I
- 2:11Speaker 4: didn't think I was ever gonna work here and the other.
- 2:14Speaker 1: Get in trouble for something like that, like what are
- 2:15Speaker 1: you gonna do?
- 2:16Speaker 4: Yeah, what are you gonna do? You know, jail for
- 2:18Speaker 4: they could kick us out of the thing. You'd love it.
- 2:20Speaker 4: When a guy insecurity came up to us at one
- 2:23Speaker 4: point and was like like, who are you And as
- 2:26Speaker 4: he did, I just started yelling at one of the
- 2:27Speaker 4: other guys like he was my assistant. And the guy
- 2:31Speaker 4: left because he was like this was embarrassing. Like I
- 2:33Speaker 4: was like, no, we can get him to me now, No,
- 2:35Speaker 4: your job is to get and he was like all right,
- 2:37Speaker 4: he just left, all right, kept hanging out. But then
- 2:41Speaker 4: we we maybe because of that, we started calling you
- 2:45Speaker 4: remember Daily Ridy used to have the productions that were
- 2:47Speaker 4: going on.
- 2:49Speaker 1: Yeah, in the course, so we're like.
- 2:51Speaker 4: Oh my god, Jennifer love youew it's starring in this
- 2:53Speaker 4: movie called The Party.
- 2:56Speaker 1: Oh yeah, I was called the Party.
- 2:57Speaker 4: That sounds like we all just seem uh, I know,
- 3:00Speaker 4: she's last summer or whatever. She'm like, let's go to that.
- 3:02Speaker 4: So we called the producer. I mean, really, don't include
- 3:06Speaker 4: this if this is too boring.
- 3:08Speaker 1: No, this is like you're the best part of the buck.
- 3:11Speaker 4: And we were like, my friend came up with this.
- 3:14Speaker 4: He called up and he goes, Hi, who's this. She
- 3:17Speaker 4: goes Susie, who's this? And he hung up on her
- 3:20Speaker 4: and then he called back like half an hour and
- 3:21Speaker 4: he goes, Hi, Susie's Chris from Jim Browner's office at Universal.
- 3:25Speaker 4: She's like, Hi. There was no internet, so you couldn't
- 3:27Speaker 4: like look at He's like, so to for Grace and
- 3:30Speaker 4: his friends are going to be I want to come
- 3:34Speaker 4: down to the set. You know, he's John Grace's son,
- 3:36Speaker 4: which but not a lie, but John Grace is just
- 3:38Speaker 4: my dad wasn't kidding it. So uh, he wants to
- 3:41Speaker 4: come by to the set and say hi to the cast,
- 3:44Speaker 4: and like, all right, we'll leave some passes for him.
- 3:46Speaker 4: So we just went where where were you? Shue I
- 3:48Speaker 4: was and some warehouse and like way out of the middle.
- 3:50Speaker 2: No, oh, we dude, we shot where you guys shoot
- 3:53Speaker 2: the CBO's record. No, and santel Oh that's what it was.
- 3:57Speaker 4: We had to take a long like we almost went
- 3:59Speaker 4: broke on the top ride there. We got there, we
- 4:02Speaker 4: walked in and everyone was there. I was like, this
- 4:04Speaker 4: was We definitely picked the rest. So we hung out
- 4:06Speaker 4: for a day. I don't think we met, but if
- 4:09Speaker 4: you saw some like, you know, preppy, young idiot just
- 4:13Speaker 4: hanging out by the monitors, like looking around, So.
- 4:15Speaker 1: Who'd you get to see?
- 4:16Speaker 4: What?
- 4:16Speaker 1: You were there?
- 4:17Speaker 4: Like?
- 4:18Speaker 1: She loved? Was she?
- 4:19Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 4:19Speaker 1: I love?
- 4:19Speaker 4: Was like, Hi? We saw who else? I think Jerry
- 4:24Speaker 4: O'Connell was there that day?
- 4:26Speaker 1: Oh, Jerry, Yeah?
- 4:27Speaker 4: And who else?
- 4:29Speaker 1: Uh?
- 4:30Speaker 4: Jamie and Jamie Presley we're on like hello.
- 4:33Speaker 1: And Seth Green was probably somewhere in there.
- 4:36Speaker 4: Seth was probably there. Yeah, yeah, which is funny because like, now.
- 4:40Speaker 1: Did you ever tell him that story? Sam Green?
- 4:42Speaker 4: I don't know. I shouldn't tell him that. I don't
- 4:45Speaker 4: know why. I just thought I think I remembered you
- 4:46Speaker 4: were in because then we went to see the movie,
- 4:47Speaker 4: We're like, yeah, Like Hollywood's fun.
- 4:51Speaker 3: So so for Grays, when it comes to working with
- 4:59Speaker 3: direct who did you feel you learn from the most?
- 5:06Speaker 4: Well? Number one be David Trainer. And I'm not saying
- 5:08Speaker 4: that because you're David directed every single episode of that
- 5:10Speaker 4: seven show, which is very rare in a sitcom, and
- 5:13Speaker 4: I maintain I told him this we would lunch. Recently,
- 5:15Speaker 4: I was like, if you had been sick one day,
- 5:20Speaker 4: if he'd missed one day of that show, the show
- 5:22Speaker 4: would have fallen above. But he knew us all before
- 5:25Speaker 4: it happened, and he knew how to kind of wrangle everyone,
- 5:28Speaker 4: and he was he's kind of stage guy, like, yeah,
- 5:31Speaker 4: he comes from the theater, and he actually pushed me
- 5:34Speaker 4: to do theater, which I did, and he actually, I
- 5:36Speaker 4: don't know if you know when I did that play,
- 5:37Speaker 4: I mean you came to see it. He flew to
- 5:39Speaker 4: New York to see it was like just wonderful. So
- 5:42Speaker 4: the most from him, and I could tell you one
- 5:44Speaker 4: hundred separate things that he taught me besides just decorum
- 5:47Speaker 4: and how to act on a set. Winner and then
- 5:51Speaker 4: after that I would.
- 5:52Speaker 1: Say, I mean you had you Sam Rammy. Yeah, it's
- 5:55Speaker 1: funny with Christopher.
- 5:57Speaker 4: Soberg Spike Lee, but but specifically with Sodaberg expect Lee.
- 6:02Speaker 4: They say very little, so I don't think.
- 6:05Speaker 1: I think they trust their castings.
- 6:06Speaker 4: We're just like, if I want to be a director,
- 6:09Speaker 4: I think I can learn a lot from them. As
- 6:10Speaker 4: an actor. You're kind of like very appreciative yours. They
- 6:15Speaker 4: just like they I think it's because Stephen comes from
- 6:20Speaker 4: documentary filmmaking. So I remember one time asking him because
- 6:24Speaker 4: I was used to getting more direction than he was
- 6:25Speaker 4: giving me, which is zero, and I was like, hey,
- 6:29Speaker 4: I mean he was walking around with the camera filming
- 6:31Speaker 4: it different ways. I'd say like, hey, do you want
- 6:34Speaker 4: me to do you have any direction for me? Or
- 6:36Speaker 4: do you want me to do it this way? And
- 6:38Speaker 4: he went, oh, I don't know. It's such a great
- 6:41Speaker 4: answer because it's true. He's like, I don't want to
- 6:43Speaker 4: put my fingerprints on your So those guys I admire
- 6:47Speaker 4: a lot, and their films are amazing, but I don't know.
- 6:51Speaker 4: I guess I did learn something about trust and trusting
- 6:53Speaker 4: your teammates. But they're so do your own thing. They
- 6:57Speaker 4: don't do a lot of takes. And Chris Nolan's like
- 7:00Speaker 4: that too. I had a small role in Interstellar, but
- 7:03Speaker 4: he did like you think he does like one hundred
- 7:05Speaker 4: takes because films are so precise, but he's so precise
- 7:08Speaker 4: that he only does like one or two.
- 7:10Speaker 2: Wow, And does he did you get a lot of
- 7:12Speaker 2: direction from him?
- 7:13Speaker 5: No?
- 7:14Speaker 1: No, No.
- 7:15Speaker 4: I think mostly what I've learned from them is that
- 7:17Speaker 4: the masters and I'm sure This is true for people
- 7:21Speaker 4: who were masters before I started working that they they
- 7:27Speaker 4: are so dialed in and know what they want that
- 7:29Speaker 4: like production is not an afterthought, but it's like they've
- 7:33Speaker 4: figured it all out. You're the person who is supposed
- 7:35Speaker 4: to be playing the role. This is the person supposed
- 7:36Speaker 4: to doing wardrobe, and it's almost like I think an exercise.
- 7:40Speaker 4: They could take themselves out of it almost a little bit.
- 7:42Speaker 4: You know what I worked with who I really loved
- 7:44Speaker 4: who was like that is Curtis Hansen. He passed, but
- 7:46Speaker 4: he did like La Confidential eight mile and stuff, and
- 7:49Speaker 4: he's he did too big to fail, and he he
- 7:54Speaker 4: was like that. He was like he didn't want to tell.
- 7:58Speaker 4: He was like overseeing the process to make sure no
- 8:00Speaker 4: one interfered with anyone and everyone did their best work.
- 8:03Speaker 4: And then you watch the thing and you go, right,
- 8:06Speaker 4: just brilliant. I'll Spike, it's amazing. The other thing I've
- 8:12Speaker 4: learned from all those guys that I just mentioned, they're
- 8:14Speaker 4: all really fun. You think they're serious, especially Chris, probably
- 8:18Speaker 4: because you know his films are so serious and Spike
- 8:22Speaker 4: maybe you'd think is serious, but they are like you're
- 8:24Speaker 4: having a blast, Like the energy is always at like
- 8:28Speaker 4: seventy two degrees with you know, thirty percent chance. It's
- 8:31Speaker 4: like always like it I'm perfect. They never let it dip.
- 8:34Speaker 4: They also don't let it get too crazy. Like it's
- 8:36Speaker 4: just they're kind of masters of what the tone is.
- 8:42Speaker 4: And I love, love working with those guys. I mean,
- 8:46Speaker 4: and you're not you guys have worked with directors like this.
- 8:48Speaker 4: You're not just excited to work with them because you
- 8:51Speaker 4: think the film's gonna be a hit. It truly is
- 8:54Speaker 4: like if the film were never to come out. It's
- 8:56Speaker 4: truly a great experience.
- 8:57Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 8:59Speaker 3: I have a couple of friends were in the Odyssey, right,
- 9:01Speaker 3: not shooting that's going to be a very challenging shoot.
- 9:05Speaker 1: For what I hear, it's like pretty challenging. Oh yeah,
- 9:08Speaker 1: it's just like, yeah, the scope of it right, pretty cool.
- 9:11Speaker 1: I mean you're talking about four thousand.
- 9:13Speaker 4: But said, I'm telling you, he's a funny guy, Like
- 9:15Speaker 4: I had a lot of laughs with him, like you would.
- 9:17Speaker 4: You would love him, like you guys would really get along.
- 9:20Speaker 4: And it's like they always make sure, you know, it's
- 9:25Speaker 4: like they take it so seriously and then they don't
- 9:26Speaker 4: take it too seriously, which is kind of great. Actors too.
- 9:29Speaker 5: I think maybe well he's.
- 9:30Speaker 3: He's like he has the perfect scenario. He can ask
- 9:33Speaker 3: studio give me three hundred million dollars and then yeah,
- 9:36Speaker 3: you know, it's like so he's like, you know how
- 9:38Speaker 3: back at it being when you're on said with him,
- 9:40Speaker 3: it's kind of amazing.
- 9:42Speaker 1: I do feel, you know.
- 9:44Speaker 3: I remember doing Fast Nation with Richard Ling later and
- 9:48Speaker 3: he he was also.
- 9:49Speaker 4: That I die to work with him.
- 9:51Speaker 3: He was so yeah, but then he would just like
- 9:55Speaker 3: it was a vibe.
- 9:56Speaker 1: You know, that's right, that's right.
- 9:58Speaker 3: You know, he come in and he he'd be like
- 10:00Speaker 3: Wilmer for you, it's like like why not first time everything?
- 10:10Speaker 1: Do it again?
- 10:11Speaker 3: And like you go back and then he's like action
- 10:16Speaker 3: and then he say cut and he'll be like.
- 10:20Speaker 1: Yeah, good, thank you.
- 10:23Speaker 4: Yeah, Like so, like you said, dude, it's a vibe.
- 10:26Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 10:26Speaker 4: I think the best director is they know that the
- 10:28Speaker 4: whole thing is depending on like the floor.
- 10:30Speaker 3: They're they're like it's an orchestra, right, Like they're just
- 10:33Speaker 3: like pulling here, pushing there, you know, and and it's
- 10:36Speaker 3: he's letting it move on its own, but he's like
- 10:38Speaker 3: just guiding it a little bit.
- 10:42Speaker 1: Yeah, you know.
- 10:43Speaker 2: Yeah, Tarantino was like that I did. I did a
- 10:46Speaker 2: movie called Grindhouse. Who was Robert Rodriguez.
- 10:48Speaker 4: Don't tell me he doesn't talk a lot though, Quinn. Yeah,
- 10:52Speaker 4: don't tell me. He's like the silent No.
- 10:54Speaker 1: No, man, No, he's.
- 10:57Speaker 2: You know he what you see is what you yet
- 11:00Speaker 2: you know, like like he wears his heart on his sleeve.
- 11:03Speaker 1: Was so gracious and nice to me.
- 11:09Speaker 2: Well, he I starred in Roberts Have but there were
- 11:12Speaker 2: supposed to be two movies that we were shooting back
- 11:14Speaker 2: to back. But he was there during the whole experience and.
- 11:17Speaker 1: Direct because he was a feature.
- 11:19Speaker 4: It was a double feature, but he was doing he
- 11:22Speaker 4: was directing what the unit on.
- 11:24Speaker 2: No, No, he's so so. Our movie was called Planetarror.
- 11:28Speaker 4: Okay, yeah, but but he was doing his own thing correct.
- 11:32Speaker 2: But he was just there like while we were shooting
- 11:34Speaker 2: our thing, because he just wanted to be part of
- 11:36Speaker 2: the experience. And there'll be times that Robert will be like, hey, Quentin,
- 11:39Speaker 2: just direct the scene. Man, I'm gonna go like step
- 11:42Speaker 2: in and direct the scene. You know, great, yeah, yeah,
- 11:46Speaker 2: but but you see the genius.
- 11:48Speaker 1: Man, it's unexplainable.
- 11:50Speaker 2: He's he's a library of film Uh, and it's so
- 11:55Speaker 2: like effortless, but you just you feel the genius just
- 12:00Speaker 2: not them.
- 12:00Speaker 1: It's it's so effortless.
- 12:01Speaker 4: If he gives you a lot of stuff to think about,
- 12:04Speaker 4: is that difficult?
- 12:07Speaker 1: No? Did he give me a lot of.
- 12:08Speaker 4: Stuff like when he comes up to you in between.
- 12:10Speaker 2: No, he's just very instinctual, you know. You know, you
- 12:13Speaker 2: never like went the film score anything. He's all instinct,
- 12:15Speaker 2: you know. So if you're doing a scene, like it's
- 12:18Speaker 2: all about his instinct and he's like, no, do it
- 12:20Speaker 2: a little more this way, a little that way. But
- 12:23Speaker 2: you but you feel that it's coming from a from
- 12:25Speaker 2: a place that is so seeped in like film history,
- 12:30Speaker 2: and it's.
- 12:32Speaker 4: Coming pure love, like pure love, totally totally.
- 12:36Speaker 2: But I worked with the Hughes brothers. I think we
- 12:38Speaker 2: had this conversation at dinner.
- 12:40Speaker 5: Uh.
- 12:40Speaker 2: I did a movie called Dead Presidents with those guys,
- 12:43Speaker 2: and probably out of all of the directors I ever
- 12:46Speaker 2: worked with, I learned the most from them because and
- 12:50Speaker 2: I think maybe this had to do we're so young
- 12:52Speaker 2: at the time and uh, like we had like a
- 12:54Speaker 2: couple of weeks of rehearsal before we shot the movie,
- 12:57Speaker 2: and it wasn't even like rehearsal, really like rehearsing scenes.
- 13:00Speaker 2: But every night we would sit down and watch a
- 13:02Speaker 2: movie and they would tell us why a movie was
- 13:05Speaker 2: good and why it wasn't, why a performance was good
- 13:08Speaker 2: and why it wasn't. It was like the best film
- 13:11Speaker 2: school I'd ever wold, and they were so gracious.
- 13:14Speaker 1: With that knowledge and with their time.
- 13:16Speaker 3: You know, So do you think your transition into a
- 13:29Speaker 3: director at some point?
- 13:33Speaker 4: I think you'd be such a good director.
- 13:35Speaker 3: Because because you know, I know, we in some of
- 13:38Speaker 3: our notes that our producers are here gracefully.
- 13:40Speaker 1: Really really worked hard on it.
- 13:42Speaker 3: We're talking about home economics, because you were almost every
- 13:47Speaker 3: possible had you could think of, from the editing room
- 13:50Speaker 3: to the writer's room to.
- 13:52Speaker 4: I was in the writer's room, but you know, but
- 13:54Speaker 4: you you had you create that. No, it was a
- 14:00Speaker 4: great script that I read that I loved, and everyone
- 14:04Speaker 4: was nice enough to really let me be a part.
- 14:06Speaker 4: You know those things what they say, we want you
- 14:07Speaker 4: to be a producer, but then they're kind of like
- 14:09Speaker 4: but not really right. But these guys were in order
- 14:13Speaker 4: for you to say yes, yeah, exactly. But they were
- 14:16Speaker 4: awesome and I got to participate as much as I
- 14:18Speaker 4: wanted to. I kind of didn't want to go into
- 14:20Speaker 4: the writer's room because I thought they were so talented
- 14:22Speaker 4: and it was very funny. I love that show and Carla.
- 14:27Speaker 4: Carla is amazing. I really loved working I mean I
- 14:29Speaker 4: love working with everyone on that show.
- 14:30Speaker 1: You love working with her more than you working with.
- 14:33Speaker 4: Me, i'd say, by double or triple.
- 14:36Speaker 1: Wait, that's a lot.
- 14:37Speaker 4: Yeah, well that's a lot. Like just putting you guys
- 14:40Speaker 4: in that instantly sweat right now, thinking about both of
- 14:42Speaker 4: you guys in my mind, I go like, how are
- 14:45Speaker 4: you even acting?
- 14:49Speaker 3: But you wore so many hats, right, So I was wondering,
- 14:52Speaker 3: why haven't you thought that directing is something because you
- 14:55Speaker 3: think about all the details and you pay attention.
- 14:58Speaker 1: To all that.
- 14:58Speaker 4: That's very kind you to say, I.
- 15:00Speaker 1: It's very kind.
- 15:02Speaker 4: Made a little too kind, a little, I might just
- 15:04Speaker 4: take it back. I feel like I don't have a
- 15:07Speaker 4: visual sense, Like when I'm reading a script, I'm whenever
- 15:10Speaker 4: I go on set, I'm like, oh, that's a better idea.
- 15:13Speaker 4: Like my idea of how to shoot it is like
- 15:16Speaker 4: the wrong idea, and the directors.
- 15:18Speaker 3: Grab an amazing DP right, who knows how to put
- 15:22Speaker 3: the lenses where you need to need them. You could
- 15:25Speaker 3: really guide a total innovative story.
- 15:29Speaker 4: Well I would. I would work for you if you
- 15:31Speaker 4: were directing something. But I for me, I'm like, I
- 15:37Speaker 4: feel like a jack of all trades, like I really have.
- 15:40Speaker 4: I feel like I had a natural skill at acting,
- 15:43Speaker 4: you know, proved by the fact that I ever acted,
- 15:45Speaker 4: and then I got the show and so I'm very
- 15:47Speaker 4: happy to do that and love it. And then I've
- 15:50Speaker 4: loved educating myself about editing more, educating myself about you know,
- 15:56Speaker 4: writing without I've never written anything but I that I've shared,
- 16:00Speaker 4: but but I want to know as much about all
- 16:02Speaker 4: the other what everyone else does. So I when I'm
- 16:04Speaker 4: in the editing room, like I've never edited, uh something
- 16:09Speaker 4: that I've been in. But when I'm in the editing room,
- 16:11Speaker 4: I don't make an ass out of myself, you know,
- 16:13Speaker 4: I kind of understand what that is. And when I'm
- 16:16Speaker 4: if I were to go to the writer's room, I
- 16:17Speaker 4: don't think i'd say something that people are going, oh
- 16:19Speaker 4: my god, this guy is an actor. So that's my
- 16:22Speaker 4: goal and it's and it's fun to learn stuff that's around,
- 16:26Speaker 4: you know, I think it makes you a better actor.
- 16:27Speaker 4: If you learn about all that stuff, I'll tell you
- 16:29Speaker 4: editing for me has been amazing because I I used
- 16:33Speaker 4: to do a lot of the same take over and
- 16:35Speaker 4: over again, and now I do just crazy different takes.
- 16:40Speaker 1: Oh you mean you're trying to get that one choice right,
- 16:43Speaker 1: Well I get.
- 16:43Speaker 4: The editor of five of the same options, right, and
- 16:46Speaker 4: now I do a lot of difference.
- 16:47Speaker 3: So speaking of editing, yeah, right, perfect, We think it's over.
- 16:51Speaker 1: I don't even know I even know how you did it,
- 16:52Speaker 1: but we really wanted to talk to you about the
- 16:54Speaker 1: Star Wars situation.
- 16:55Speaker 4: Yeah, how did this get blown in the out of proportion?
- 16:57Speaker 1: But let me let me also say a couple of things.
- 17:01Speaker 3: One of the biggest bonding moments for us is that
- 17:05Speaker 3: we love the same movies too, right, So like Back
- 17:08Speaker 3: to the Future, Jeraccid Park, right, you know, Star Wars,
- 17:12Speaker 3: Like we were really into these you know, larger than
- 17:15Speaker 3: life ideas.
- 17:16Speaker 4: Home were I insed to have a game on set.
- 17:18Speaker 4: It's kind of just kids who grew up in the
- 17:20Speaker 4: eighties game where I'd say to him, like the game was,
- 17:25Speaker 4: you say to the other person, where's he going? And
- 17:29Speaker 4: the other person says home? So team me up, say
- 17:32Speaker 4: where is he going?
- 17:33Speaker 1: Where's he going.
- 17:37Speaker 4: Home? And we do that for hours, and the posites
- 17:42Speaker 4: would go so long and so corny whatever, But that
- 17:45Speaker 4: was because we grew up watching all the same females.
- 17:49Speaker 4: Where's he going?
- 17:54Speaker 1: We should have gone a long time again.
- 18:00Speaker 5: That you changed?
- 18:04Speaker 4: Oh man, we had this.
- 18:10Speaker 1: Honestly, that was like that. That was the ending to the.
- 18:14Speaker 3: Yeah, we also thought, like, what if at the end
- 18:17Speaker 3: of seventies show that vised cruiser or like the minivan
- 18:20Speaker 3: or whatever, just to cough up.
- 18:22Speaker 5: That's right.
- 18:22Speaker 4: It was what FS was never from from.
- 18:26Speaker 3: Somebody like Jackie or somebody goes, Where's where's fans going?
- 18:32Speaker 1: He's going home? Starting the show was just so bizarre. Honestly,
- 18:38Speaker 1: that would have been an epic And I.
- 18:40Speaker 4: Hope everyone just saw it. That's what we were doing,
- 18:42Speaker 4: literally hours and hours.
- 18:44Speaker 1: I love it.
- 18:45Speaker 4: Yeah, were you asking a qu We were asking a
- 18:48Speaker 4: question or something. I'm sorry, well.
- 18:50Speaker 2: You brought up editing and and and I was I
- 18:53Speaker 2: haven't seen it, but you all were explaining it to
- 18:56Speaker 2: me that you and maybe you can.
- 18:59Speaker 1: Explain so he do chronologically.
- 19:03Speaker 4: Okay, here's what happened. I produced a film. Another thing
- 19:07Speaker 4: I loved learning about was also it's just great. How
- 19:10Speaker 4: you start to realize acting acting and actors are such
- 19:12Speaker 4: a small part of the process, you know. I started realizing,
- 19:17Speaker 4: like I was, what's going on in post? Like why
- 19:20Speaker 4: is it taking them so long? Like you know what
- 19:22Speaker 4: I mean? Like we shot the movie, put it in order,
- 19:25Speaker 4: and when I went into post, I made such an
- 19:27Speaker 4: ass out of myself. I gave such terrible notes and
- 19:29Speaker 4: I still am so regretful about it. So I bought
- 19:33Speaker 4: an avid and I hired someone to tutor me how
- 19:37Speaker 4: to cut things myself, not to cut things. I was, Yeah,
- 19:42Speaker 4: I went on eBay and figured it out. And the
- 19:45Speaker 4: show when ended and we had the time, and I
- 19:48Speaker 4: wanted to learn just you know, there's that rainbow keyboard
- 19:51Speaker 4: that you're and the ball and I didn't know how
- 19:54Speaker 4: to use any of it. And I learned it all.
- 19:56Speaker 4: And the way I learned was I first took a
- 19:59Speaker 4: tonement you remember film James McAvoy and I I had
- 20:04Speaker 4: an idea about how there's these flashbacks that happened right after,
- 20:07Speaker 4: and I was like, wait, you could reorder it and
- 20:09Speaker 4: go to the present and do it all. So it
- 20:11Speaker 4: was like a forty minute short film that people I've
- 20:16Speaker 4: showed people who hadn't watched a toement. They were like,
- 20:18Speaker 4: that's good. I mean it was totally different, like they
- 20:20Speaker 4: lived in the ending and had a happy end. Oh totally.
- 20:22Speaker 4: But people like that's a good like short, but why
- 20:27Speaker 4: is it forty minutes. It's like, I got to find
- 20:28Speaker 4: something that's really long. And I do love Star Wars,
- 20:31Speaker 4: and so I took. I wasn't so hot on the prequels,
- 20:35Speaker 4: so I took the new three films. They didn't have
- 20:38Speaker 4: the jj Abrams ones out yet, so it's just these
- 20:41Speaker 4: ones with Natalie Portman, and I put them back to
- 20:44Speaker 4: back to back and inserted all the outtakes because the
- 20:47Speaker 4: outtakes have all the effects done in them because it
- 20:49Speaker 4: would just be them on a green screen. So it's
- 20:51Speaker 4: like nine and a half hour long movie. And I
- 20:54Speaker 4: just whittled it as I'm learning to edit, whittled into
- 20:56Speaker 4: like a hour and a half. And there's kind of
- 20:59Speaker 4: within that trilogy, there's one actually a good movie. Yeah
- 21:05Speaker 4: that's the problem, but it was and I showed it
- 21:09Speaker 4: one time, but there was a blogger in the audience,
- 21:12Speaker 4: so it really blew up.
- 21:14Speaker 1: You know, I never went to the space you had
- 21:17Speaker 1: a screen.
- 21:17Speaker 4: Screening at the Soow House. It was like, you know,
- 21:19Speaker 4: one hundred people and people were going insane. I ended
- 21:23Speaker 4: it a more fun part. I think, like right when
- 21:26Speaker 4: that mask is coming on and I but people were
- 21:29Speaker 4: really going nuts. And then I did a couple of
- 21:31Speaker 4: times we did Close Encounters, which is a lot of
- 21:33Speaker 4: different version of that movie, and we did with the Hobbit.
- 21:36Speaker 4: But it was and I was doing with friends were
- 21:38Speaker 4: doing it too, so it was like a bunch of
- 21:39Speaker 4: people I know who cut And it was again I
- 21:44Speaker 4: don't ever want to cut, especially the future directors I
- 21:47Speaker 4: work with. I never want to cut anything I'm on.
- 21:50Speaker 4: But it was just informative to me how the process works.
- 21:55Speaker 1: But that I mean, it's epic. By the way, that's
- 21:57Speaker 1: a lot of foots.
- 21:58Speaker 5: To go through.
- 21:59Speaker 3: How did you It's the music and all that stuff,
- 22:01Speaker 3: like the cues and music.
- 22:02Speaker 1: CU's hard.
- 22:03Speaker 4: There's a way to we just cutting per scenes or
- 22:05Speaker 4: now you get you can strip the music out by
- 22:07Speaker 4: going onto like different channels and oh it's boring, sneaky grace.
- 22:13Speaker 2: So it was like an exercise in editing more than
- 22:17Speaker 2: anything to.
- 22:18Speaker 4: Yeah, and I'll be honest, if I took it out now,
- 22:20Speaker 4: it's probably not even so good. But I think it
- 22:23Speaker 4: was that Star Wars had no one knew there was
- 22:25Speaker 4: ever going to be another one, so it felt like
- 22:27Speaker 4: it was over and there was oh, there's like a
- 22:30Speaker 4: new one kind of right now, there's enough Star Wars material.
- 22:34Speaker 1: I'm saying, I think you should consider directing.
- 22:37Speaker 4: You'd be surprised, but I'll edit your film that you direct.
- 22:40Speaker 1: That would be pretty awesome. What is that credit going
- 22:44Speaker 1: up there? You know, but that's your passion.
- 22:46Speaker 2: I hear Giovanni Ribisi is a DP.
- 22:50Speaker 4: Apparently it's incredible.
- 22:51Speaker 5: Yeah, were you?
- 23:02Speaker 1: I mean you directed before?
- 23:04Speaker 2: I have not, not on a major level like that.
- 23:07Speaker 2: I got really passionate about producing, you know. I love
- 23:11Speaker 2: like to me is like a puzzle, you know, and
- 23:14Speaker 2: I love like putting the puzzle together. And I think
- 23:17Speaker 2: I have good instincts and so like having the instinct
- 23:20Speaker 2: to go that that guy should be the director, that
- 23:23Speaker 2: guy should be you know, like I just I go
- 23:26Speaker 2: off of instinct and feel, and I think I'm all
- 23:29Speaker 2: right at it.
- 23:30Speaker 4: You know what I started loving when I got into
- 23:31Speaker 4: producing is that clearances.
- 23:34Speaker 1: Clearances, like really getting into.
- 23:37Speaker 4: The nitty gritty of clearing something, meaning when you're watching
- 23:39Speaker 4: a movie and they have like not a coke can,
- 23:42Speaker 4: but something fake, like a fake soda, and you're like, yeah,
- 23:45Speaker 4: it took me out of it, or the numbers five
- 23:46Speaker 4: five five, which I love getting into it, or getting
- 23:50Speaker 4: a song that you can't get clear. They go, but
- 23:52Speaker 4: the artist will never let that happen. And I love
- 23:56Speaker 4: really getting into it and being like, no, I had
- 23:59Speaker 4: a film where we wanted to clear I won't even
- 24:02Speaker 4: say who the artist was, but some popular song from
- 24:05Speaker 4: the most it's called Opening Night, and we're trying to
- 24:10Speaker 4: clear it. They couldn't do it, they said. They finally
- 24:12Speaker 4: called the musician's agent, and the agent said, yeah, if
- 24:18Speaker 4: Tovah Grace feels so passionate about it, if he walks
- 24:22Speaker 4: into my cubicle and hands me the check for fifty
- 24:25Speaker 4: thousand dollars, and then I'll make sure it clears. Because
- 24:28Speaker 4: it was the song was gonna cost fifty grand or something,
- 24:30Speaker 4: but we had the money. We just didn't the artist
- 24:32Speaker 4: wouldn't clear it. So I just I mean, it's nothing
- 24:34Speaker 4: to hop in your car and just drive down to
- 24:36Speaker 4: this guy's office. But the guy was like, oh my god,
- 24:38Speaker 4: I'm so sorry. I didn't really think you'd show it
- 24:40Speaker 4: and I was like, here, man, do we get the
- 24:41Speaker 4: songs good?
- 24:42Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 24:42Speaker 4: And then you get this song that no one can
- 24:44Speaker 4: ever get, you know. He had to call this artist
- 24:46Speaker 4: and be like, sorry, I promised someone you could use
- 24:50Speaker 4: it in your film. But I love I love all
- 24:54Speaker 4: the little things about it. That's what I love so
- 24:56Speaker 4: much about doing producing on home economics. But you can
- 24:59Speaker 4: move so many thing things. Fame is such a stupid currency.
- 25:03Speaker 4: But when you use it like that and you start
- 25:05Speaker 4: to feel like, oh, you know, it's good.
- 25:07Speaker 3: I mean, everybody wins, right, Like that's the other things,
- 25:09Speaker 3: like you you you know, you can make these phone calls,
- 25:12Speaker 3: you create exciting packages, the clear and stuff. I mean,
- 25:15Speaker 3: I've always been I have a passion for getting titles
- 25:18Speaker 3: that people think I should never have. Like I went
- 25:22Speaker 3: to I approached cop Con in Japan and I control
- 25:27Speaker 3: street Fighter for like two years and nobody knows that,
- 25:31Speaker 3: and everybody's like, you know, like I titched it to everyone.
- 25:35Speaker 1: As like a like a.
- 25:37Speaker 3: Ground and gritty, like you know, underground fight club type
- 25:41Speaker 3: of situation that eventually the pond gives getting deeper the later.
- 25:44Speaker 4: I'm into that right now, No one was into that, well,
- 25:47Speaker 4: they're like, oh, you.
- 25:48Speaker 3: Know comic books and video games, like did you know
- 25:50Speaker 3: that really doesn't work? Like nobody's waing. Like I was like,
- 25:53Speaker 3: oh my gosh, yeah. I was like so I had
- 25:55Speaker 3: the same thing with Archie Comics. I control Archie Comics
- 25:59Speaker 3: for like like a whole year. I sold it to
- 26:01Speaker 3: twentieth Century Fox. It's like, you know, like, oh, it's
- 26:04Speaker 3: like a hipster single camera show. It takes place in
- 26:07Speaker 3: silver leg and it's a comedy. But you know, they're
- 26:11Speaker 3: all still wearing vintage clothes because hipsters, and.
- 26:13Speaker 1: You know, they were like a good idea. It was
- 26:16Speaker 1: really cool and uh and.
- 26:18Speaker 3: Then the rights holder was like I want to write
- 26:20Speaker 3: it and I also want to direct it.
- 26:24Speaker 1: And there where.
- 26:25Speaker 3: But the street Fower one was a major win for me.
- 26:27Speaker 3: Just getting Street Fighter was crazy. It was like I
- 26:30Speaker 3: control street Fighter or the It was insane, you know wow.
- 26:34Speaker 3: And there was Zoro too, But Zora was like I
- 26:36Speaker 3: fell in love with John Girtz, who you know holds
- 26:39Speaker 3: the rise and the copy rights and all that stuff,
- 26:40Speaker 3: and it's a huge deal.
- 26:41Speaker 1: Oh my god, it's crazy. It's crazy. People like you
- 26:44Speaker 1: did what.
- 26:45Speaker 3: But that's the point, right, Like the point is you
- 26:47Speaker 3: make these phone calls. You'll never know if he's a
- 26:50Speaker 3: yay or an A unless you make the phone call.
- 26:53Speaker 3: Like your agents can tell you that it's gonna be
- 26:55Speaker 3: a heavy lift and be like, Okay, I guess, I
- 26:57Speaker 3: guess that's where it ends. But then you decide, Okay,
- 26:59Speaker 3: let me see what happens when I call, you know,
- 27:02Speaker 3: and and that's half of this town.
- 27:03Speaker 1: That's how she gets done. You got that right? How
- 27:07Speaker 1: do you feel like knowing him?
- 27:09Speaker 2: Since he was a wee lad and now he's like
- 27:12Speaker 2: some big mogul company owner, show producer, movie producer. I mean,
- 27:18Speaker 2: you know, multifaceted, A great place for you to tell
- 27:22Speaker 2: the hair story.
- 27:25Speaker 4: Story, you know, Yeah, okay, I will tell this. So
- 27:27Speaker 4: but I would say, I don't think I'm actually that surprise.
- 27:30Speaker 4: I don't think you and I are that different than
- 27:32Speaker 4: we were twenty years ago. So I don't think I'm
- 27:35Speaker 4: very surprised about any of it. But I mean that
- 27:37Speaker 4: as a compliment. But when we first met, so what
- 27:41Speaker 4: should we end on this? Our first meeting was Wilmer
- 27:48Speaker 4: was new to America, new to English.
- 27:52Speaker 1: And new to like American humor. Yeah, I have my
- 27:55Speaker 1: own like.
- 27:56Speaker 4: By the way, I should say that is something that
- 27:58Speaker 4: I loved about you. Was like, this humor is different,
- 28:01Speaker 4: like it's from it's coming from a different place. The
- 28:04Speaker 4: first time I realized Wilma was funny was he did
- 28:07Speaker 4: an impression of a chipmunk. And I don't mean like
- 28:09Speaker 4: the chipmunks in the show, like a chipmunk we saw
- 28:11Speaker 4: on the sidewalk and it was so funny. I was like,
- 28:15Speaker 4: what is this, Like everyone does impressions of people, Like
- 28:19Speaker 4: why is he doing an animal? This is such a
- 28:20Speaker 4: weird story, but it's true. I was like, Oh, that's
- 28:23Speaker 4: like he's coming from like Neptune. Like I don't even
- 28:25Speaker 4: think it's normal. His sense of humor in Venezuela. I
- 28:28Speaker 4: just think it's like Wilmer's sense of humor so specific
- 28:31Speaker 4: to him. Yeah, when we first started the show, I
- 28:34Speaker 4: mean I'm talking like day one of us showing up,
- 28:38Speaker 4: we went to the wardrobe at Third Rock because we
- 28:43Speaker 4: didn't have our own wardrobe area yet.
- 28:45Speaker 1: Yeah, we didn't have our own production offices yet.
- 28:47Speaker 4: And Bonnie was sitting with us all in a circle,
- 28:49Speaker 4: and she said, should we all do trust falls? Do
- 28:51Speaker 4: you remember that? She was joking, but I was like,
- 28:53Speaker 4: I think this is actually like an orientation. It's like
- 28:56Speaker 4: I don't know any of these kids. And everyone was
- 29:00Speaker 4: going around, everyone was being the fact that Ashton was
- 29:03Speaker 4: just chilling out, like everyone was being their quietest myself
- 29:07Speaker 4: and didn't want to screw it up. And then and
- 29:10Speaker 4: she said, why don't we go around in a circle
- 29:11Speaker 4: and say who we are and where we're from and everyone,
- 29:15Speaker 4: you know, I was like, I'm still over. I'm from Connecticut,
- 29:18Speaker 4: recently got out of boarding school. You know. Ashton was
- 29:21Speaker 4: in college or had been in college and was in
- 29:23Speaker 4: New York and came to Wilmer and he said, my
- 29:26Speaker 4: name is Wilma, and my hair talks to me. My
- 29:30Speaker 4: hair talks. Everyone was like, I mean, even if we
- 29:33Speaker 4: wanted to be nice, it was like what what? And
- 29:37Speaker 4: then he didn't know English well enough to recover whatever
- 29:40Speaker 4: it was he was trying to say, which I which,
- 29:42Speaker 4: like I think like literally ten years later, I was like, dude,
- 29:45Speaker 4: what was that joke supposed to be we.
- 29:47Speaker 1: Were talking about?
- 29:48Speaker 3: There was like conversation of like I have so much
- 29:50Speaker 3: hair and it's like so think of it, like it's
- 29:53Speaker 3: hard to do anything, like my hair has his own personality.
- 29:55Speaker 4: Oh uh, huh yeah, okay, so still not a great joke.
- 29:59Speaker 4: Is the point of that?
- 30:00Speaker 1: You know, I just want you to get to know me.
- 30:04Speaker 4: Well, this is our show.
- 30:06Speaker 3: Thank you so much for On that note, uh so
- 30:09Speaker 3: for thank you man for for coming and besting our
- 30:12Speaker 3: show and being so open to to reminisce and and
- 30:16Speaker 3: what I mean. Obviously you know I remained an incredible
- 30:20Speaker 3: big fan, but most importantly excited that, you know, the
- 30:23Speaker 3: world gets to see you on TV again. When is
- 30:26Speaker 3: this Netflix show? You know, when it's gonna happen this
- 30:29Speaker 3: June already?
- 30:30Speaker 5: Whoa? Whoa?
- 30:31Speaker 1: How many episodes do you guys?
- 30:32Speaker 4: Only eight episodes? But it's it's you know what, I
- 30:36Speaker 4: haven't seen it yet, but I think it's great. You know,
- 30:38Speaker 4: that's the feeling when you come out of it.
- 30:39Speaker 3: And by the way, Netflix consistently doesn't put together packages
- 30:42Speaker 3: like that, but I think you are. You work with
- 30:44Speaker 3: Maria Bello there my old coaster from NCIS and that.
- 30:47Speaker 4: The reason she's great at Hope McNally, most of the noise,
- 30:50Speaker 4: Jake Leary just it's like cross the board, great actors.
- 30:53Speaker 4: What's it's about a family that kind of runs drugs
- 30:59Speaker 4: in North Carolina? But they're like, you know, like one
- 31:03Speaker 4: of those streaming shows. They're like the good drug guys
- 31:05Speaker 4: and I'm like the bad drug guy.
- 31:07Speaker 1: Yeah, and are you can you?
- 31:10Speaker 4: Are you one of the I'm the bad guy?
- 31:12Speaker 1: Wow?
- 31:12Speaker 4: So it's like, oh yeah, they talk about I don't
- 31:16Speaker 4: come in until episode four or something. So it's like
- 31:21Speaker 4: the whole time, I think it's a little bit of
- 31:24Speaker 4: a joke that it's me, but but I I loved
- 31:27Speaker 4: it. It was such a great Kevin Williamson wrote it and
- 31:29Speaker 4: he's like amazing.
- 31:32Speaker 1: And how long when you in North Carolina for months?
- 31:36Speaker 4: I mean it was It's funny they say it's a show,
- 31:38Speaker 4: but you go, these are eight movies. It's the same
- 31:40Speaker 4: thing with these other big shows on Netflix. You just
- 31:43Speaker 4: go at the very least like three movies, like a trilogy.
- 31:46Speaker 1: You're showing is the same director all the way through.
- 31:48Speaker 4: No no different directors. But but you know, it's like
- 31:51Speaker 4: it's so epic the money they have for these.
- 31:54Speaker 1: Yeah, Like I mean they can really create stuff.
- 31:56Speaker 4: There's an explosion in one of them and I was like,
- 31:58Speaker 4: this is straight up Michael bay Old stuff.
- 32:01Speaker 3: That's that's that's amazing. And you have anything else coming
- 32:04Speaker 3: out this year? This is this is going to be
- 32:06Speaker 3: your Uh.
- 32:08Speaker 4: I did a thing with Glenn Powell, with our buddy
- 32:11Speaker 4: Glenn Powell. He's he didn't move and I did a
- 32:13Speaker 4: couple of days on it, and but I don't know
- 32:16Speaker 4: when that comes out. But that's like in South Africa.
- 32:19Speaker 4: He's I mean, you know the words out. But Glenn
- 32:22Speaker 4: pal is awesome. I know everyone knows I'm not breaking
- 32:24Speaker 4: any news. But so he's a budd of yours. Yeah, yeah,
- 32:27Speaker 4: I love I knew him a little bit before him
- 32:29Speaker 4: such a great I.
- 32:29Speaker 1: Love him so much and I'm so so proud.
- 32:32Speaker 3: Of him because he he really manifested everything he's got.
- 32:35Speaker 1: And uh, he's one of those guys.
- 32:37Speaker 4: Man, he's one of like, you know, one of these guys.
- 32:38Speaker 1: He comes in a room and lights it up. You know,
- 32:41Speaker 1: he's just like that guy.
- 32:42Speaker 4: He's still the same guy. I mean, you know, he's great.
- 32:45Speaker 1: He's great on screen. He has a great lessence about him.
- 32:48Speaker 3: Know, he's he's really he's really great. We have so
- 32:50Speaker 3: many friends in comment to we we laugh all the time.
- 32:53Speaker 3: He sent me a picture the other way the other
- 32:56Speaker 3: day of like I think it was like he was
- 33:01Speaker 3: like eighteen years old or something.
- 33:03Speaker 1: Like that we were both like this and I was like,
- 33:05Speaker 1: when did that? Like it was crazy, dude, I assure
- 33:08Speaker 1: the picture was pretty insane.

- 33:37Speaker 4: like I recorded it, but you it's it's such a
- 33:42Speaker 4: I think when it comes to like memoirs, a lot
- 33:45Speaker 4: of people are just kind of like saying the events
- 33:46Speaker 4: that happened in their life. And it's so cool to
- 33:48Speaker 4: see it come from a from a perspective for really
- 33:52Speaker 4: interesting and you even even you could have written it
- 33:53Speaker 4: different ways, but you took it from like one perspective.
