- 2:46Welcome to the show, Dave. Happy West Virginia Day in West Virginia
- 2:49did all right. So here's what I'm gonna do, because I'll say this,
- 2:52Hoppy is gonna, as he always does on talk line, on West
- 2:55Virginia Day, is going to celebrate the state, have different people on to
- 2:59talk about their experience at West Virginia. You are not a West Virginian by
- 3:02birth, I am, But as the old saying goes, you're by choice,
- 3:07and you got here as quickly as you could. That's right, all
- 3:09right. And you are from originally tell us where you're from. Originally Colorado?
- 3:13Gotlorado, all right? So what is it that led you to West
- 3:15Virginia other than just the job at Bridge? Because jobs are one thing,
- 3:19okay, but people don't work twenty four hours a day, it seems like
- 3:23it sometimes when people don't work twenty four hours a day, there's got to
- 3:27be lifestyle, there's got to be all these other things. What is it
- 3:30that appealed to West Virginia about doctor Casey Sax? Well, you know,
- 3:34I actually I moved to West Virginia, and then I moved away to go
- 3:38to work in Washington, d C. And I moved back to West Virginia.
- 3:40So the more interesting question is why do you move back to West Virgia.
- 3:44Okay, that's a very good question. Yeah, And I moved back
- 3:46because it's a wonderful state. It's such a beautiful place. There's so much
- 3:51going on here. I'm constantly amazed by my students and community and just really
- 3:55believe in helping to make this place better. And when you say it's a
- 4:00beautiful state, you're from Colorado, I am, I know beautiful states.
- 4:03Yeah, what is so beautiful about West Virginia to you? So? I
- 4:06love deciduous trees. I'm frequently found out in the forest hiking with my dogs.
- 4:12I think just the biodiversity here is incredible. I'd never seen ghost plants
- 4:17before. I had never seen I mean, I see bears in the woods.
- 4:21It's just it's really fun. Well, loves are not on your front
- 4:25porch, It's okay, I guess right, they're not eating the trash,
- 4:27They're in the perfect spot. Well, you know, I'm gonna get my
- 4:30opinions on West Virginia a little bit later on too. But you know,
- 4:33a lot of us have had opportunities to go other places and opted to stay
- 4:38here. And you're somebody who's not from here that came here and then moved
- 4:41away and then came back. So that may be the most unique story we
- 4:45hear all day. Well, nice on the air. When I texted you
- 4:47yesterday, doctor and I asked you about what you want to talk about today,
- 4:51you said, Goldman sachs Now, I have to admit I wasn't quite
- 4:56prepared for that. Explain to me the correlation between Bridge Valley and Goldman Sachs.
- 5:00So Goldman Sachs has an initiative that's called ten Thousand Small Businesses. They
- 5:04saw that there's not a place where small business owners can get the training they
- 5:10need to grow their businesses. That that sort of a gap in the marketplace.
- 5:14So they created a training that they've rolled out to great, big markets
- 5:16all over the country and actually they've served about fifteen thousand small businesses so far.
- 5:21And they decided they really wanted to do this in rural communities, so
- 5:25they came to West Virginia. They looked at what was going on here and
- 5:29they picked Bridge Valley and they said, we want to deliver this training out
- 5:31of Bridge Valley for free two small business owners from anywhere in West Virginia that
- 5:36want to come in and do it. It's really about growing small businesses in
- 5:40rural communities. So we're so excited about it and hope that small business owners
- 5:45who are listening today decide to sign up for this incredible free opportunity. What
- 5:48kind of things would go on in the training for them so they'll learn things
- 5:51about finance, they're looking at revenue streams. The other small business owners who
- 5:57have done it have seen increases in their revenue. They've hired new employees,
- 6:00they've created more jobs. They're trying to figure out how do we help you
- 6:03grow your business. So there's a business coach. There's nine modules. The
- 6:09first couple of days are face to face, and then there's a set of
- 6:12learning that are once a week online, and then at the very end there's
- 6:15a face to face and it's about helping small business owners know each other and
- 6:20use each other's businesses. One of the things they've seen in other cohorts is
- 6:24they start using each other for their supply chain issues. Just all kinds of
- 6:29things to help grow our small business pipeline right here in West Virginia. What
- 6:31kinds of small businesses are there any particular types they'd be looking at, or
- 6:35maybe in your role as college president of Bridge Valley, what do you see
- 6:41as a need for small business Because I know sometimes you need guys work with
- 6:45the toyotas and it's all wonderful, but small business is the lifeblood of America,
- 6:49of the American economy. So kind of small businesses are we looking at?
- 6:51Are we talking about it. I mean, it really could be anything.
- 6:54Goldman's criteria is that the business has revenue over seventy five thousand dollars in
- 6:59the most recent fiscal year, that the person who takes the classes the small
- 7:02business owner or co owner, that they've been in business for at least two
- 7:06years, and that they have at least two employees. And the two employees
- 7:10counts the business owner and someone else, and so that leaves the field wide
- 7:14open. I know, I've talked to a man who owns a small tech
- 7:16firm. They do a lot of computer support for families. They're a very
- 7:19small, family run business. They're signing up, they've been interested. I
- 7:24talk to a woman who owns a salon. She has a couple of employees
- 7:28and is trying to figure out how do you grow revenue and what kind of
- 7:30inventory do I need and what does this look like? So she's signing up.
- 7:33I mean, it's really a huge spectrum of what's possible, and really
- 7:38we're excited to welcome anyone interested in So it's kind of through that out there
- 7:42to small businesses. If there're small businesses that are listening right now, the
- 7:46owners, managers, whatever, what do they need to do get involved in
- 7:48this, so we have links to sign up on our website. It's a
- 7:53very short application and it's the ten thousand Small Businesses Initiative Bridge Valley. Goldman
- 7:59Sachs would get you all in the right place talking again with doctor Casey Sachs
- 8:01Abridge Valley to Dave, Allen, Joe and five eighty Live brought to you
- 8:05in part by Husbands Pizza this month that your favorite husbands get a large eighteen
- 8:07inch Pepperoni pizza and any whole tenants of only twenty three ninety nine at Husson's.
- 8:13So time wise, the switch gears here. What is happening now at
- 8:18Bridge Valley to get ready for the upcoming I guess fall semester. Yeah,
- 8:22So every week we're still doing fafts so Fridays, trying to help families and
- 8:26students make sure they know how to fill out financial aid forms. One of
- 8:28the really interesting things that we've seen this semester is that we've had huge numbers
- 8:35of students transfer into Bridge Valley from four year institutions. And I think from
- 8:39the students I've talked to us for a couple of reasons, and one of
- 8:41them's financial aid. Bridge Valley's a lot more affordable than four year institutions are
- 8:46credits all transfer and so students because FAFSO has been so hairy this year,
- 8:52they've said, I'll just go to Bridge Valley for a year and then make
- 8:56other choices and see what it is I want to do. So we're excited
- 8:58about that and excited that students are choosing to live right here in Charleston and
- 9:03go to school at their communities college. We're happy to have folks when these
- 9:07when these students are coming in where primarily are they coming from, just I
- 9:11guess to all different institutions of higher learning when they transfer into it. For
- 9:15you, we see the biggest numbers who come to us from WVU and Marshall,
- 9:18But that's because they're the biggest instance. Sure, yeah, yeah,
- 9:22And sometimes you know, it's not necessarily reflection on those on those institutions of
- 9:26higher learning. I mean, you know, everybody's got different personalities. They
- 9:28go away and they think, well, maybe this isn't for me. I
- 9:31don't like living in these areas, or maybe something's happened at home, they
- 9:33got a family situation. It's not necessarily a negative reflection on WVU, and
- 9:39in fact, we transfer just as many students back out to those institutions every
- 9:43year, so we're also excited to be able to do that. That students
- 9:46often start at Bridge Valley and then decide, Gosh, I want to move
- 9:50to Huntington and have a different experience, and that's wonderful. I think what's
- 9:52great about it is that you can go back and forth, and that it
- 9:56is so flexible, and and that because Bridge Valleys credits are transferable, it
- 10:01means students' lives can change and they can come home for a family issue or
- 10:05make other choices. And we're glad that we can serve them that way and
- 10:07be flexible that well. So no issues at all with things transferring. Their
- 10:11records are I mean, classes they've taken. Everything's good, right. It's
- 10:15so every school sets their own graduation criteria, So if you know where you're
- 10:18going to transfer, we always want to start with let's look at that institution's
- 10:22graduation requirements, because we don't want you to take things twice, so we
- 10:26want to make sure we advise you into the classes that are required for the
- 10:28institution that you're planning to go to. Let's talk about the connections to the
- 10:31business community Bridge Valley. It's something that we're always big on. I mentioned
- 10:35the relationship that you have with some of the larger employers and some of the
- 10:39smaller ones too here in the Kanawa Valley and surrounding areas. So what news
- 10:43can you report to us there? So we're always excited to work with different
- 10:48employers for various activities, exactly like what you're saying. But one of the
- 10:50programs that we're especially proud of that I like to make sure to talk about
- 10:54is called Learn and Earn, And so what it is is it's a wage
- 10:58match for employers who are willing to take a student out of one of our
- 11:01programs and give them a chance, because we see that the best employment opportunities
- 11:05happen for our students if they've had real work experience. So, for example,
- 11:09you might be in our accounting program, but if you've never worked in
- 11:13an accounting firm or in a bookkeeping capacity or any kind of accounting space,
- 11:16it's much harder for you to get a job. And so what we try
- 11:20and do is place our students who are in every single program with employers who
- 11:24want those particular skills and to incentivize it for employers will match wages with them.
- 11:30So if you needed a student who was in accounting, we'd work through
- 11:33the details of a learn and earn And let's just say you say, I'm
- 11:37going to pay my accounting student twenty dollars an hour. So you pay them
- 11:41twenty dollars an hour, and at the end of each pay period, you
- 11:43send us the receipts, the payroll proof that you paid the student twenty dollars
- 11:46an hour, and will reimburse you, as the business owner, ten dollars
- 11:50an hour. So it decreases your risk in being able to take someone who's
- 11:54not fully trained, and it gives our students a really great authentic opportunity.
- 11:58I mean so like it's a wonderful thing for businesses because the one thing that
- 12:01I get doctor Saxon talking to business owners here in the area, and this
- 12:05this is problem nationwide, is we can't get people. Yes, we cannot
- 12:09get people to work. It's challenging and it's also hard because you are taking
- 12:13a risk in hiring a student. And so all of the community colleges in
- 12:16West Virginia actually participate in this program because we're really committed to helping our students
- 12:20get those work based learning experiences. Give us the website again for Bridge Valley
- 12:24Bridge Valley dot edu. All right, well, always a pleasure to have
- 12:30you, to have you on the show, and we'll be talking to you
- 12:33and some of your co workers in the future. So thanks a lot,
- 12:37best luck and happy West Virginia Day. Thank you, so nice to see
- 12:39you, David. You as always, it is nine to nineteen. Hang

- 16:17will tell you that we get Senator Joe Manchin coming up on the show a
- 16:19little bit later on. I'm very interested in talking to Senator Mansion about a
- 16:23number of things. There has been some information or some things in the news
- 16:27about bump stocks, and I don't pretend to be the the gun expert that,
- 16:33let's say it, Chris Lawrence is or someone like that. However,
- 16:37the Senator has gone on and this is a bipartisan effort that he's had to
- 16:45ban bump stocks, and Hopies talked about this in detail. So I'm interested
- 16:51to get Senator Mansion's take on that as well, and some of the things
- 16:53that are going And of course, you know, and if the Senator's office
- 16:56is listening right now, this may keep him from coning in. You know,
- 17:00I'm going to ask you big questions, big questions about what are you
- 17:03doing for the future, if anything. So we'll get to Senator Mansion about
- 17:07that. Come it up a little bit later on Bigley Pigli Wiggly Hotline three

- 17:15nine three five five zero zero eight. Well, it is West Virginia Day.
- 17:18Indeed it is. And uh, you know, I was kind of
- 17:23good to save this for the for the end of the show. But maybe
- 17:26I'll go ahead and since we're trying to see where Rusty Web is, maybe
- 17:29well maybe possibly you can get him on the phone or or or not at
- 17:33all. But your thoughts on West Virginia. And I know that's a very
- 17:38very vague statement. I am someone. I'll start with myself. I am
- 17:45someone, as you well know, a native West Virginia, from southern West
- 17:48Virginia. Been in the Canau Valley for ten years now, love it,
- 17:52love it here, loved it in southern West Virginia where I'm from in Logan
- 17:57County. I have had opportunities to work and live in other areas, but
- 18:06I've chosen to be here. And one of the things in talking to a
- 18:11lot of political figures that I talked to on a regular basis on the show,
- 18:15I talk about the need of getting the need of getting quality people to
- 18:23want to stay in West Virginia. Talking about our young people. You know,
- 18:30I'm a kid of the eighties, as you well know, graduated high
- 18:32school nineteen eighty eight, and so many of the people of my generation left
- 18:38West Virginia at the time. The economy. West Virginia's economy has a tendency
- 18:44to sometimes do the opposite of what the nation's economy is doing. The coal
- 18:49mining industry was booming when I graduated high school nineteen eighty eight, and I
- 18:55had friends of mine who went into the coal mines. I mean literally a
- 19:00week or so or started the process with the training and whatever a week or
- 19:03so after graduating high school and continue to work in the coal industry in one
- 19:10way or the other. Not necessarily in the minds all of them. But
- 19:12some were truck drivers and some were some of the ancillary industries. But a
- 19:18lot of people of my generation did did leave. They went to the hot
- 19:22During my dad's generation, everybody went to Columbus, or everybody went to Detroit,
- 19:26or everybody you know, went to some of those areas. My generation
- 19:30was more North Carolina. I joked. I was on the planning committee for
- 19:33my ten year high school reunion, and I said, we could have had
- 19:37this high school reunion in Charlotte because that's where everybody seemed to want to be,
- 19:41or everybody was at that time. But getting back to my original point
- 19:48is, you've when I talk to these political people, I say, what
- 19:51is it that we need to do to make West Virginians want to stay West
- 19:57Virginians and not to move off to wherever. And when I talk to younger
- 20:04people, and which is not often, but I, you know, frequently,
- 20:07will talk to young people on the show and ask them, you know,
- 20:11why why are you still here? And I think it's it's interesting how
- 20:19the answers have changed over the years, because again, with my generation,
- 20:23it was jobs. It was it was all about jobs. But it seems
- 20:27like with a younger generation it tends to be more about experiences. And they
- 20:32all mention the great outdoors. And I know people that have moved to West
- 20:37Virginia specifically for they came here to Whitewater raft, they came here for the
- 20:42bike trails, they came here to ski or whatever, and they liked it
- 20:45here and they liked the people here. So I guess the question that I'm
- 20:48going to ask to you, and you can call me Bigley Biggily Wiggily hotline
- 20:52is three zero four three four five fifty eight fifty eight, or the text
- 20:55line for Fruth is three zero four nine three five five zero zero eight.
- 20:59What is it that makes you stay in West Virginia? Now, if you're
- 21:03somebody because of the age of the internets that we have now, a majority
- 21:11of our listeners to this show and other programming on this station and our other
- 21:15stations into building aren't listening on a terrestrial radio anymore. They're listening online.
- 21:19They're listening on the apps or whatever. I had a regular texture from Florida
- 21:23every day. I've got another one from Indiana that has told me that they're
- 21:27listening. If you're living out of state, I'm gonna go take the negative
- 21:32with the positive here. If you're somebody who's living out of state, what
- 21:36is it about that state that makes you want to stay there as opposed to
- 21:41coming home to West Virginia. I have said, as I talked to doctor
- 21:45Sachs, I said, you know, look, the jobs are one thing,
- 21:48but people don't work. There's got to be more than jobs, especially
- 21:52with the younger generation. It's not just about employment. A person only works
- 21:57so many hours a day. So what is it that makes you either want
- 22:06to stay in West Virginia or that makes you happy that you left either one?
- 22:11And what could we do to try to get you to come back to
- 22:15West Virginia. I have known a number of people, some of my generations,
- 22:19maybe some of a little bit older, that have said that they're out
- 22:22of state, they're working. I've got a very very good friend, my
- 22:26best friend from high school, lives in Carmel, Indiana, and she and
- 22:30her husband have great jobs up there. They've been gone from West Virginia for
- 22:34five six years so, and she and her husband have both told me that
- 22:41as soon as they retire, they cannot wait to come back to West Virginia.
- 22:48And that's an interesting answer to me. Now, does that mean that
- 22:52they can't get the gainful employment because they're both my age, which means they're
- 22:56old, you know, they're in their mid fifties. That can they not
- 23:00get the game of employment. That's why they left was because of employment opportunities.
- 23:03They had much more at that time in Indiana than what they do here
- 23:08or what they had here at that time. But as soon as they retire,
- 23:14they can't wait to come back to West Virginia. And one of the
- 23:17things that they talk about with West Virginia is the friendliness of the people.
- 23:22My friends lived, as I said, in Carmel, Indiana, which is
- 23:23a very well to do city. It's consistently ranked as one of the top
- 23:30ten cities in America to live in, with the schools and low crime rate
- 23:33and all the stuff. But they said they don't know their neighbors, They
- 23:38have no idea they see them. My friend said, you know, my
- 23:44friend Rich lives up there, says when he moved in, he just kind
- 23:47of looked across the street and waded his neighbor, and his neighbor just looked
- 23:49at him went back in the house. Maybe that's because he knew he was
- 23:52from West Virginia, you know, maybe he saw the West Virginia flag and
- 23:55said, okay, these people are going to have a Chevy Silverado up on
- 23:57blocks within the first a couple of hours. But the friendliness is not there
- 24:04from what I hear from a lot of people. But you know, kind
- 24:10of broad questions, as I said, what is it that makes you love
- 24:12West Virginia? What is that makes you want to stay in West Virginia if
- 24:18you do want to stay in West Virginia, And what is it that makes
- 24:21you want to get the heck out of West Virginia? And if you did,

- 25:06Today. Text says Happy West Virginia Day, Dave. I will never forget
- 25:11when the great John F. Kennedy said, the people of West Virginia aren't
- 25:15very pretty, but the mountain sure are, or something like that. I
- 25:18don't think that was the exact quote text. I think the the uh,
- 25:23I think the text was more or the not the text. I think the
- 25:26quote was more something like the he came he was campaigning in West Virginia.
- 25:32As the story goes, and I think I'm correct on this he was campaigning
- 25:33in West Virginia, uh and and he made a statement. It was pouring
- 25:38down rain in West Virginia, and he made the statement, the sun may
- 25:42not always shine in West Virginia, but the people always do. That was
- 25:48the actual statement that was made from John Kennedy. And and you know,
- 25:53John Kennedy was one that came here and seemed to fall in love with West
- 25:59Virginia. And obviously we know how that story ended and how he had to
- 26:04you know, he did not get to complete his presidency, but he was
- 26:08somebody I think that loved West Virginia. And with all of the changes that
- 26:14we've seen politically in West Virginia, the Republicans, you know, take over
- 26:18pretty much in twenty fourteen with a super majority which became a super duper majority,
- 26:22which after this fall I think is going to be a super super super
- 26:25super duper majority. Does that change your opinion of West Virginia in any way?
- 26:34Are you? Are you serious? Right now, my producer Dale Cooper
- 26:38is telling me that Joe Manchin, Senator Manchin just canceled on the show today.
- 26:45I'm over to am I actually am I actually here? I'm over to
- 26:49today Rusty Web canceled and Joe Mantionin canceled. Well, there goes the whole
- 26:56show right there. Let me see, let me knock out a couple of
- 27:00texts here, because apparently That's what I'm going to be doing for the rest
- 27:03of the show. Tex says, I love my hometown in Ohio that has
- 27:10more people than West Virginia has total but literally wasting an hour of my life
- 27:15as traffic lights every day is soul crushing. I'm a male and a mile
- 27:22sorry. I'm a mile from work in an amazing capital city the size of
- 27:26a typical suburb, and can get from one side of town to the other
- 27:30in ten minutes and the rest of the valley in a half hour. I'm
- 27:33just an hour away from some of the most beautiful scenery in state and national
- 27:37parks with great skiing, hiking, and whitewater rafting a day's drive from any
- 27:42place on the East coast to the Mississippi River. I love my hometown.
- 27:49See they started out to Texas saying I live my hometown. That's what confused
- 27:52me. What they said was I love my hometown. I love my hometown
- 27:56in Ohio, and it has more people in West Virginia. But I think
- 27:59they were saying that they like that, they that they love being here,
- 28:03and that's that's one of the things that you hear a lot, and especially
- 28:07from the people who just kind of showed up at West Virginia. All Right,
- 28:11we gotta gotta call, I think. All right, let's go to
- 28:15the phones. Good morning, you're on the air. Good morning morning,
- 28:18Happy West Virginia Day, Happy West Virginia Day. What can we do for
- 28:22you? Well, I'm just calling to tell you why I love West Virginia.
- 28:25Go right ahead and staying here. West Virginia is America's best small town.
- 28:30And the people are the greatest, okay, And it's one of the
- 28:34most beautiful places. And when you were talking about the Republican takeover and all
- 28:37of that, I worked as a lobbyist and I also held electric office,
- 28:44and so I was you know, I'm one of your more liberal listeners,
- 28:47Okay, I as I know, and I have friends across the aisle and
- 28:52across the spectrum, and I just think that West Virginia is a place where
- 28:56we try to focus on our commonalities and really will do what we can to
- 29:03help each other. And that's why I love it. Can I ask you
- 29:07some personal questions? Are you from West Virginia originally? Yes, all right,
- 29:11I mean from this area, not that it matters, but are you
- 29:14from the Kenaw Valley area? So? I was born in Charleston, And
- 29:18if you want to get real personal, my parents divorced and I grew up
- 29:22in a suburb of Columbus, Okay, So I spent summers here and you
- 29:27know, Christmas time here, and then I moved back in the early nineties.
- 29:33What is it that we need to do to have more stories like yours?
- 29:40What can we do as well? I mean you said that you tend
- 29:42to be a little bit more on the liberal side, and that's okay.
- 29:47What is it that we need to do to attract more people not only to
- 29:49come to West Virginia, but what do we need to do to get people
- 29:55to want to stay in West Virginia? Because to me, that is as
- 29:57big a problem is not getting people to want to move here, is trying
- 30:02to get our young people when they graduate high school and they go away to
- 30:04college or whatever or whatever it is they decide to do post high school,
- 30:08is to get them to want to stay here. What can we do to
- 30:11get young people here. I really think that we need to diversify our economy.
- 30:15I mean, I think for a long time to regardless of what your
- 30:18opinion is about fossil fuels, for a long time, I think West Virginia
- 30:23was fairly beholden to coal and it was a little bit of a mono economy.
- 30:29And so I think that that, you know, that can have an
- 30:33impact on what other jobs are coming here. I think now as we begin
- 30:37to transition our electric sector into you know, different fuels, we have an
- 30:44opportunity to create jobs. And I think that the Development Office you know,
- 30:49is doing that. You see different programs under the IRA to bring clean energy
- 30:56here. But I think despite that, I think also working on remote work
- 31:03jobs, service jobs, that kind of thing, highlighting our natural resources,
- 31:07which I think the Tourism Office does well, and getting young people who are
- 31:14interested in you know, that kind of small town quality that we have here.
- 31:18It's a great place to raise a family, there's plenty to do.
- 31:22There's plenty to do in Charleston, and then you know, you go out
- 31:26to the National Forest and the National Park. So we've got it all as
- 31:33far as I'm concerned, And you know, how do we get that message
- 31:36out, Well, I appreciate you you bailing me out and calling here this
- 31:40morning. Thanks a lot. I know, I'm so sorry that everyone.
- 31:44Yeah, I'm beginning to think, you know, I mean, I know,
- 31:45I'll put the odorant on this morning, so it can't be that.
- 31:48So I was beginning to wonder very interesting comments from you, and I appreciate
- 31:52you calling. Thanks a lot. Okay, I have a great day.

- 36:59Cole Gray, and she joined us. Now Senator Grady, good morning,
- 37:01welcome to the show, Senator Grady, Are okay? All right? Are
- 37:08you there? I'm here, okay, I got you. How you doing.
- 37:13I'm doing good. I was checking my emails this morning as I often
- 37:15do, and listen to your show, and heard you say that you needed
- 37:19some time the worse I send out, hold on, that's not what I
- 37:22said. I didn't say it that way. I just said I had two
- 37:25guests in a road that cancel. But that's okay because sometimes it, you
- 37:29know, after thirty six years, it gives the old guy an opportunity,
- 37:31an opportunity to just riff a little bit and throw it out there and go
- 37:34out and you know, and walk the tightrope a little bit. But you
- 37:37offered, but you offered a called up, so I'm not gonna I'm gonna
- 37:39talk to you. Now, you are someone who, as I said,
- 37:44among your other jobs, it is your job to try to get people to
- 37:46want to come to West Virginia or get our people to stay here. What
- 37:50is the selling point to West Virginia for you? You're a native West Virginia,
- 37:53right, yes, absolutely, you know. I've lived in Mason County
- 37:57my whole life, and I love West Virginia and so you know, my
- 38:01husband and our kids, we like to travel, and so often when I
- 38:05talk to people outside of this state, we talk a lot that you know,
- 38:09a lot of people still don't know or don't recall that West Virginia is
- 38:15a separate from Virginia. Yes, yes, So I often get the question,
- 38:20well, how close how close do you live close to Virginia Beach?
- 38:22You know? Known, so then it gives me that opportunity, or do
- 38:24you live close to Richmond? So I always take that opportunity to tell them
- 38:30about West Virginia and let them know the things that we have to do.
- 38:34And I like to generally talk a lot about our outdoor activities and then also
- 38:38you know, our beautiful state parks. I try to get them to come
- 38:40to visit, and I always tell them, you know, if you come
- 38:43to visit West Virginia once, you'll come back and then you'll want to move
- 38:45here because our people are people, I think is the selling point. So
- 38:49we have that of the friendliest people. I agree with that, and that
- 38:52was kind of the story that I told earlier about my friends who live in
- 38:53Indiana. I think that the people and I know that's that's such a corny
- 38:59state to say and so cliche to say, well, it's the people of
- 39:01West Virginia, but by god, it's right in my opinion, I think
- 39:06it's right on yes. And every time you know, I talk to people
- 39:08that come from out of state that come either whether whether they come to talk
- 39:12to the legislature, they just you know, I run into them. That's
- 39:15what people from out outside of West Virginia say, they really do. And
- 39:19I know it sounds corny. I agree with you, David does, because
- 39:21we hear that all the time. But that's what they tell me, you
- 39:23know, they say, you know, the people here are just so friendly
- 39:27and nice everybody, and I think that's really our greatest asset and that to
- 39:31get people to come here. So you know, I've never been one of
- 39:34those people, even as a teenager that always thought, you know, I
- 39:37want to grow up and move away from here. I've never I've never felt
- 39:39that way. I've always felt really appreciative of everything West Virginia has to offer.
- 39:44And I have never wanted to leave and never want to leave, and
- 39:46hope my children feel the same way. Let's talk about the work of the
- 39:50legislature as somebody you know, as I said, I mentioned earlier that the
- 39:53Republicans you know, pretty much to go over in twenty fourteen. It became
- 39:57a super majority, found out a super duper majority. No indication that that's
- 40:00going to change anytime soon. What have you folks under and I know you've
- 40:04just been there a few years of that. What have you folks done under
- 40:07the dome that you think makes West Virginia a more attractive place for people?
- 40:12Well, you know, we try to focus on things that focus a lot
- 40:15on families and personal freedoms, and so, you know, I think those
- 40:19are really important to people. And you know, being this is I'm finishing
- 40:22up my first term. This is an election year for me, and so
- 40:27I really really like to try to talk to people and let them know that,
- 40:30you know, when I went in Dave. When I went into legislature,
- 40:32I went in not knowing completely what I was getting myself into. Honestly,
- 40:37you know, the people that I would work with, who I could
- 40:40trust, what I could do. And I was pleasantly surprised because you have
- 40:45this mindset when you're outside of politics of how quote unquote politicians are, you
- 40:50know, power hungry, and all these different words come to mind. And
- 40:52when I got there, I was really shocked and surprised and pleased that everybody
- 40:57that I work with in the Senate seems to have the best interest of the
- 41:00people of West Virginia in mind. You know, they want to do things
- 41:04for the right reasons. And I'm really really proud of that, is that
- 41:07everybody, even though we might have different views or different ideas, the thirty
- 41:10four members of the Senate typically work together and try to make sure that we
- 41:15accomplish something for West Virginia as a whole, and we don't work against each
- 41:20other. And I think, you know, that is something everybody can be
- 41:22proud of. Senator Amian, the old Grady, It's always a pleasure to
- 41:24have you on the show, and I hope that when you are traveling,
- 41:29you and your husband and your family. And people say ask you. If
- 41:31you say if they ask you, are you close to Virginia Beach or Richmond
- 41:34or Roanoke, you say no, I'm closer to downtown Leon, West,
- 41:37Virginia. I am. That's absolutely right. All right, Senator, we'll

- 43:49Nothing says you have to wear anything under it. I'm just saying,
- 43:51all right, what can we do? What can we do for you,
- 43:52sir oh I was just calling in, you know, I just hearing the
- 43:55good conversations and follow up with what people have already said, you know,
- 44:00as far as West Virginia, and the best part about it it is our
- 44:04people. I mean, you know it. I love my neighborhood. I
- 44:07live on the East End. I've got neighbors that we all help each other
- 44:12out, take out the trash or shovel of snow or or or you know,
- 44:16you know, broom the walkway or whatever. So we're all looking out
- 44:19for each other. And then, as you know, I love the campaign.
- 44:22I love meeting people. And I can't tell you how many times I've
- 44:27had people come in. I knock on their door and they say, well,
- 44:29come on in, let's talk. They I've had folks fro potatoes for
- 44:32me and sit down and talk about issues and whatnot. So, you know,
- 44:37just to kind of follow up on what Centeria Grady said, our people
- 44:39are our greatest. And then on top of that, you have here locally
- 44:44in Knall County, just great leadership You've got, you know, Mary Goodwin
- 44:47and Mayor Somemmrs and Clinton and a Mary case Bolton Nitro and Mary Elliott and
- 44:52Dunbar and they and Mayor James and Saint Albans and you there. There's not
- 44:57a weekend during the nice warm months where there is something to do here in
- 45:00the area. I mean, there's so many things going on. It's specific,
- 45:04and I know it's not this way all over the sate of West Virginia,
- 45:07but there's so many things going on in Charleston on a regular basis in
- 45:09the entire Kanawa Valley that I can't mention them all. I mean literally I
- 45:13can't. And I have people that call up and say, well, we'd
- 45:15like to come on and talk about this and about that. You know,
- 45:17we have the Taco Festival which starts today in South Charles that's right up your
- 45:22alley. We got that going on. We got wine and jazz. This
- 45:24weekend, we got live on the levee. We got festival that's continuing.
- 45:27There's a big, big, major concert, all day concert festival, music
- 45:31festival going on in Putdam County over at Valley Park this weekend. And I
- 45:36haven't even had a chance to talk about that, but I agree with you
- 45:37there there's a lot of stuff going on. Hey a judge, it's always
- 45:42good to have you on the show man. I appreciate you listening. Thanks
- 45:45a lot, Thank you, Dave. Happy West Virginia Day to West Virginia

- 50:07Dave, I've left West Virginia three times to come back three times. I
- 50:12think it's a good thing for kids to get away from home and experience the
- 50:15world. It creates a well rounded adult. West Virginia is beautiful, the
- 50:17people are wonderful, and pace of life is amazing. The stuff we need
- 50:22to work on that will bring those kids home our job opportunities, improved infrastructure,
- 50:25sell internet coverage, to reduce extreme politics. We went from extreme left
- 50:30to extreme right. Most people are somewhere in between, healthcare access. I
- 50:35think we are really making strides towards some of those things. Some of them
- 50:38we seem to be moving backwards as a texture. The only thing I would
- 50:42disagree with on that is I don't know that West Virginia was ever extreme left.
- 50:45Yes we were a Democrat state, but we were still always always a
- 50:50conservative state. But good points made by the texture. Uh Texas, Dave,
- 50:54I have roots in West Virginia and the other Virginia. After my military
- 50:59service, I was on the fence which states to return to to make a
- 51:01permanent home or broke. The time for me was West Virginia State University.
- 51:06They were a great choice for a non traditional college student in my mid twenties.
- 51:09At the time, WVSU was and is a great education right for veterans.
- 51:15Go Yellowjackets. All right, good point. I'm working to get doctor
- 51:17Eric Cage from Western New State on the show one day next week. As
- 51:22you know, they just made a major announcement about their agriculture school there,
- 51:25So I was in contact with those folks yesterday about possibly getting doctor Cage,
- 51:30who's a frequent guest on the show, coming up one day next week.
- 51:34Texas, Dave, I have lived here all my life and raised five kids.
- 51:37The only complaint I have is the laws and agenda that are now passed
- 51:40by the legislature do not appeal to most young people, including my kids.
- 51:45The discrimination and uses of public education funds for private institutions, and many other
- 51:49things imposed by them by this current legislature does not appeal to them. Three
- 51:53Gone, says the text Texas. So it's the biggest problem with this state
- 51:57is our closed minded conservative majority voters who would let a New Jersey trump boot
- 52:01liquor over a real West Virginian. It's pathetic. Would have been nice to
- 52:06have the other West Virginia gubernatorial candidates Chris Miller, Moore Capitol, Macwarner and
- 52:09and Governor Justice too to show they actually are by a partisan and get behind
- 52:14Steve Williams in his bid for governor. He's a great guy, experienced and
- 52:20is a real West Virginian. Morrissey is no Jay Rockefeller says a texta Texas
- 52:24to Dave. Can we have the Columbus caller lady a regular show contributor.
- 52:29I'll just listen every day. Well, whoever you are, you got a
- 52:31fan there, tex says Our legislator kind of got thrown into the fire this
- 52:36morning because we had two guests that we want to cancel, one that just
- 52:38didn't show up. So there you go. So ants Wine a great job.
- 52:40Appreciate you a young fellow. That's how you near getting old. And
- 52:44you say, young fellow, just sell you a young whipper snapper. Hobby's
