- 0:00Nobody wants to walk into their their grocery store and it to be
- 0:03NASCAR. No one's looking for ads
- 0:05everywhere all the time. Yeah, use the screens
- 0:07intelligently to deliver messages that are maybe
- 0:10relevant. Hello and welcome back to the
- 0:23Retail podcast Live from I was going to say shop talk live from
- 0:27grocery shop. I'm here with Harles Fischman,
- 0:30VP and general Manager of encounter RRD underneath the
- 0:34umbrella of RRD. So, Hans, for those who don't
- 0:36know what you guys do, why don't you tell us what you do?
- 0:39We work with both retailers and advertisers and what we try to
- 0:42do is for a retailer, we're trying to take the idea of
- 0:45digital signage to the next level for their customers.
- 0:49How do you use digital signage to personalise the shopping
- 0:51experience to put more items into carts and baskets and and
- 0:55how do you to create a more bespoke and modern experience
- 0:58for an advertiser who wants to be in the store?
- 1:01We managed to solve actually something very similar, which is
- 1:04that we're putting more items into baskets and carts.
- 1:07We're trying to personalise and customise the targeting of a
- 1:10message that goes to a consumer as they go through their through
- 1:13their shopping journey and more importantly, providing back the
- 1:16relevant data that's necessary for them to make smarter
- 1:19marketing decisions. You must meet a lot of
- 1:21customers. I mean, there's these, these are
- 1:22sort of some of my hard getting go to question.
- 1:26You must meet a lot of customers, yes.
- 1:28What's the number one problem that they're trying to solve
- 1:30when they come to talk to you? Well, I think for a customer,
- 1:34and let's let's define this, there's 2 customers, there's
- 1:36retailers, and then there's advertisers, brands.
- 1:38For a retailer, they have a challenge with margin for linear
- 1:42foot. And so by bringing in
- 1:44advertising, by selling more items for linear foot, by by
- 1:47activating data in a way that they've never been able to
- 1:50actually create a value for it, we're actually allowing them to
- 1:52think of their store in a different fashion in terms of a
- 1:55blended margin. And for the advertiser, we're
- 1:57helping them deliver messages directly to consumers when
- 2:00they're actively making a purchase decision.
- 2:03If I'm in a grocery store, for example, I'm there to buy
- 2:06something. So if you can influence that
- 2:08purchase decision in real time, you actually have created an
- 2:11entirely new marketing channel, an opportunity for attribution
- 2:14and conversion. What are some of the outcomes
- 2:17that you're creating that? So you've obviously mentioned
- 2:20that you've got two types of customers, the agency and then
- 2:23the the the retailer. What's the main outcome then
- 2:26that you're producing for either or?
- 2:27Obviously you're trying to convert.
- 2:30For, for a retailer, the number one thing that we create is
- 2:33revenue and it's now revenue through a couple of different
- 2:36revenue streams for the advertiser.
- 2:38We're providing a different level of data that's ever been
- 2:41possible before in a real store. And when we look at the growth
- 2:44of retail media networks and, and the growth really is
- 2:47tremendous, but it's based on a couple of pieces of information.
- 2:50It's based on being able to target effectively, it's being
- 2:53able to have attribution and attract conversion.
- 2:56And as you do that in the digital world, which is actually
- 2:59very straightforward and easy. The challenge is, is that if
- 3:02you're a retailer, most of your traffic is in the physical
- 3:06world, it's not digital. And if you're an advertiser,
- 3:09most of the sales are happening in the physical world, not
- 3:13digitally. As big as e-commerce is, it's
- 3:15still only 20% of retail and that's globally.
- 3:18So as we look towards what are the possibilities for an
- 3:21advertiser, we are allowing for and delivered to them the data
- 3:25necessary to make smarter marketing decisions.
- 3:27And for a retailer, what we're providing is the ability to
- 3:30activate and to create value for arts of their store that
- 3:34haven't, they haven't really been able to figure out how to
- 3:36make that U on par with what they're able to do digitally.
- 3:41So would you, would you say that you're earlier on you mentioned
- 3:44that you're an advertising company that's come into tech,
- 3:47correct, right. So therefore you understand that
- 3:49world better, right? Is that right?
- 3:52That's correct. So we are, we are an advertising
- 3:55company that does tech and we've been like this now for decades.
- 3:59That's what we do, which is that we find technologies and we
- 4:02adapt them for purposes of delivering marketing messages.
- 4:05Over time, as digital has come to the forefront, we've of
- 4:08course adopted digital technology to allow us to target
- 4:11more effectively. And we do that in a variety of
- 4:13ways depending on what the medium is.
- 4:15If it's digital advertising, display, we do that.
- 4:19If it's CTV, we do that. Depending on which each one has
- 4:22had their advantages and mechanisms for this, for
- 4:25purposes of growing this out, where what we've built is the
- 4:28ability to take the digital methodologies that we've
- 4:31developed, the learning and iteration that we've done over
- 4:34decades and we're now applying it physically in the real world.
- 4:38So we're bringing the capabilities that you would do
- 4:39digitally to bear inside of a store.
- 4:42And that's what I mean by being an advertising company that does
- 4:45technology. If I were a technology company
- 4:48and I'm trying to say, oh, here's my crazy widget, First
- 4:51off, odds are it isn't born over the course of decades of
- 4:54learning and iteration. You don't have the relationships
- 4:57with the brands that you need that are necessary to actually
- 5:01build the business around that. And more importantly, you're not
- 5:04providing solutions for retailers.
- 5:05In other words, you have a solution in search of a problem.
- 5:08We have a problem that we have learned how to solve through
- 5:13literally years and years of working from the advertising
- 5:16perspective and bringing that into retail environments.
- 5:19Perfect, final two questions. Where do I start and where is it
- 5:23going? So you start by calling me.
- 5:26So we, we, we, where we start is actually by building up the
- 5:30supply. And what does that mean?
- 5:31It means by working with retailers to be able to build a
- 5:35larger scale to the business. So you're agnostic to the
- 5:39retailer then, in terms of what? So we are agnostic to both
- 5:42retailers and to brands. Our our goal is to actually
- 5:45facilitate business between them by providing solutions for both
- 5:49sides. Got you.
- 5:50OK. So this if I've got a retail
- 5:52media network already, you're providing the content for me.
- 5:55We I can. And the medium.
- 5:57I can, we can do two things. We can we can work with you as a
- 6:00retail media network. Let's say you're a large
- 6:02retailer today and you have a retail media network, an RMN.
- 6:05We can work with you to figure out how to deploy these into
- 6:08your stores and incorporate them in.
- 6:10So you can now have increased scale.
- 6:12So in other words, you have demand that you've generated
- 6:15digitally. We can help you bring that into
- 6:17store and we do that by the programmatic capabilities that
- 6:20we can bring to bear by tying this into a back end system that
- 6:23is fully modern and designed specifically to deliver digital
- 6:27advertising from a demand perspective.
- 6:30We can actually help you with either bespoke pieces where
- 6:33you're doing custom installations in the store very
- 6:35similar to like an end cap or something along those lines.
- 6:37Today. We're also working with you to
- 6:39help encourage the retailers to adopt and that comes in the form
- 6:42of your media spend goes to the retailer to a much higher degree
- 6:46than they do through other channels than you typically see
- 6:49through programmatic channels. That allows for the retailer to
- 6:52recognise a return on their investment that much more
- 6:54quickly. This creates a healthy cycle, a
- 6:59circle of virtual, a cycle of virtue, if you will, That a
- 7:02virtuous circle. That's what I was looking for.
- 7:04Thank you. To create a virtuous circle.
- 7:07That virtuous circle then actually encourages retailers to
- 7:10adopt more technology because they're making more money from
- 7:13them more effectively. So to answer your question,
- 7:15where do we begin? The proverbial chicken or egg?
- 7:18Yeah, We work today with existing networks and our goal
- 7:21is to actually maximise the opportunity with them.
- 7:24We then work in conjunction with several large global technology
- 7:28providers and not as a vendor relationship, but as a partner
- 7:31relationship to build an ecosystem where all of these
- 7:34different companies can now succeed and help bring the
- 7:37capability into retailers and large retailers, small
- 7:40retailers. And then so where did you see
- 7:42the future? What, what?
- 7:43What is the future of this? Industry, the the future of this
- 7:46industry is it starts where it began, which is how do we look
- 7:50at the retail experience? We as consumers, not not me as a
- 7:54technologist or you. You're hosting this podcast.
- 7:56Yeah. How do we as individuals that go
- 7:58into a store, how can I create an experience that is more
- 8:02bespoke, more personalised and customised, very similar to what
- 8:05I might get off of my mobile device, right.
- 8:07When we get our mobile device, it's universal.
- 8:10It applies to everybody, but over days and weeks it starts
- 8:13personalising to how I want to see information.
- 8:16If I'm a retailer, how do I bring that capability to bear
- 8:19inside my store? So I think that over time what
- 8:21we're looking at is the the increase of more individual,
- 8:26smaller discrete displays that deliver personalised recommended
- 8:31messaging based on behaviours I may have taken or based on
- 8:34perhaps a loyalty programme or other some other form of first
- 8:37party data that allows for us to develop systems to the target
- 8:42messaging that helps drive consumer behaviour.
- 8:44Most importantly, when I say drive influence, it's really
- 8:47about how do you influence a consumer to take action?
- 8:51Yeah, that's beneficial to them. And in many respects in digital
- 8:54advertising, it's overload, right.
- 8:57Nobody wants to walk into their their grocery store and it to be
- 9:00NASCAR. No one's looking for ads
- 9:02everywhere all the time. Yeah.
- 9:04Use the screens intelligently to deliver messages that are maybe
- 9:07relevant for maybe it's Peach season.
- 9:10Peaches are now in season. So here's a delicious cobbler
- 9:12recipe. By the way, for cobbler, you
- 9:15also need butter and you need milk and you need Graham
- 9:17crackers and you need these things.
- 9:19So that creates the opportunities to deliver
- 9:21targeted marketing messages as we start thinking about the
- 9:24context of the shopper in that environment and how do we
- 9:28deliver that message, That's what Encounter is.
- 9:30It's the platform that enables it.
- 9:31I myself am not a marketer. Yeah, I'm a product person.
- 9:34As a product person, I've listened to marketers, but I've
- 9:37also listened to retailers. And we believe that we've
- 9:40figured out the solution that meets both of their criteria,
- 9:43their needs and their requirements, but at the same
- 9:45time allows for us as consumers. And it's always starts with the
- 9:49consumer, right? It's like, yes, brands want
- 9:51everything and retailers want everything, but if you annoy
- 9:53your customer, you got nothing. Yeah, So you have to start
- 9:57there. So to create that experience and
- 9:59how do you do this? How can we be privacy safe?
- 10:02How can we put privacy at the forefront of artists of how we
- 10:05look at this? How do we then tie the the
- 10:07messaging and making sure that I am delivering that message for
- 10:10Peach cobbler when it's time? How do I allow the local manager
- 10:14to who knows their customers and greets them by name as they walk
- 10:17in the store? How do you how do you create
- 10:19that environment? How do we create an environment,
- 10:21a technology platform that allows for ADA compliance or for
- 10:24people that have you know, that are differently abled?
- 10:27How do we how can we support them better using the exact same
- 10:29technology? When we look at this in its
- 10:32holistic platform, the same technology that allows me to
- 10:35deliver a targeted ad for somebody for Peach cobbler can
- 10:37also identify somebody that has especially different needs.
- 10:40And by making this work at an enterprise grade, that's what I
- 10:44think the future looks like. Miss Brilliant Hans, thank you
- 10:47so much. Thank you.
