- 0:00Speaker 1: Time for football. At four it's powered by the inside
- 0:02the first podages brought you by Bet three six y five.
- 0:05Wherever the sport, whatever the moment, it's never ordinary. At
- 0:08Bet three six five. Well, the Phils go down today.
- 0:12At the watch party here at Ury's Butt, we're starting
- 0:14to fill up. People can watch the second game of
- 0:17the doubleheader. Man, they had two to one. They called
- 0:20marsh safe on that play peg, they called him safe.
- 0:23They bailed him out. Then Turner stole second, and they
- 0:27had second and third with two outs in the bottom
- 0:31of the ninth, and Kyle Schwarber came to the plate
- 0:36and he struck out one hundred and one up by
- 0:40his face. And yet Bryce Harper on deck. So this
- 0:43is one of those first situations where we see a
- 0:46spot where you had to pitch to Schwarber because Harper
- 0:51was on deck. You know, you said Robert Suarez was
- 0:53the pitcher. He was the one that Harper hit the
- 0:57home runoff of the bedlam to the bank. Yes, and
- 1:01he's waiting on deck, so you know, Suarez is trying
- 1:03to go after Schwarber, and Schwarber can't get the job done.
- 1:07He strikes out and ends the game. The Phillies lose
- 1:09six to four in game one of the double header.
- 1:11But really this game was lost early in the game
- 1:14with all the walks from Mick Abel and it was
- 1:17a good.
- 1:17Speaker 2: Rally though for the boys. Yeah, well tonight.
- 1:20Speaker 1: Do you know it's the same day as the Phillies
- 1:24game that ended at four forty one in the morning.
- 1:26Speaker 2: I did see that on social Was that yesterday? H Yeah,
- 1:30it's today.
- 1:30Speaker 1: Yeah, it was against the Padres a double header. Yeah,
- 1:33so they're playing the Padres in another double header today.
- 1:38We're at URI's Waterfront Restaurant in Wildwood, Little Football at four.
- 1:42Bring in Jeff Mosher. We'll talk some football right now
- 1:45on the Sports Bass Live ninety seven to three ESPN.
- 1:48We had a good football conversation yesterday with Adam Cappel.
- 1:52We were talking about the trades that are going on
- 1:55the Pittsburgh Steelers making all sorts of trade. We also
- 1:57got into this collusion thing. I don't know if you
- 1:59hear the podcast, Jeff, with Pablo Torre and Mike Florio,
- 2:04you know, we were talking about guaranteed contracts in the NFL,
- 2:07whether we'll ever see that end up happening. But the
- 2:10whole thing about collusion. People keep asking me how come
- 2:12this hasn't been talked about more usually when something of
- 2:17this magnitude would come out. I would think the NFL,
- 2:20if there was a collusion thing, which is they're suggesting,
- 2:22is they're probably also saying, don't talk about it, right,
- 2:27This is probably something that they don't want to kind
- 2:29of get into all that much because I don't quite
- 2:32frankly think the fans care all that much. I think
- 2:35they're on the side of the colluding.
- 2:39Speaker 3: I think the fans don't understand everything that went into it,
- 2:42why went into it, And I think if you're looking
- 2:45for somewhat of a secondary culprit in this, just based
- 2:48on what I know and I have read, is that
- 2:50the NFLPA, who would want to represent the players in
- 2:54this situation, didn't seem to have an open gripe about it,
- 2:59which was surprising to me.
- 3:01Speaker 2: I mean, when this happens in baseball, or when there's even.
- 3:04Speaker 3: The thought of a collision in baseball, the MLBPA is
- 3:09the loudest voice in the room pointing to the owners
- 3:13every labor dispute, constantly talking about the owners. Don't open
- 3:15the books, they're secretive, you can't trust them. You would
- 3:18think the NFLPA would be making a really big loud
- 3:22stink about it too, based on the Lamar Jackson situation
- 3:25and the text messages, but they didn't.
- 3:27Speaker 2: I'm surprised about that.
- 3:28Speaker 3: And I think the lack of sort of accusatory finger
- 3:33from the NFLPA, which has the right to be the
- 3:35loudest voice here, probably is why it's been tamed so far.
- 3:39Speaker 1: Well, I mean, and this is an interesting football conversation.
- 3:42You know, the whole average, the avenue of the guaranteed contract.
- 3:46The fans are generally against the guarantee contract because they're saying,
- 3:48once you get your money, you have nothing left to
- 3:50play for. So this is why I think that the
- 3:53fans are not outraged by the fact that this was
- 3:55kind of hidden from them, is that, well, we don't care,
- 3:58we don't want guarantee contract. So this whole notion if
- 4:01the other sports, you know, you look at baseball, well
- 4:03you got to pay the guy, you got to pay
- 4:05him the whole contract. It's guaranteed, whether he plays or not.
- 4:07That's why I think football has this element too of
- 4:10that the fans can you know, it's more of like
- 4:14if you don't perform you get cut and you don't
- 4:16get paid.
- 4:18Speaker 3: Well, probably, I think the smart fans, some of them
- 4:20who understand the contracts and we go through it a
- 4:22lot on inside the Birds, understand that if every single
- 4:26contract is guaranteed, the way the Eagles operate and do
- 4:29business would be pretty difficult. By pushing money that they
- 4:33know will never see the light of the day into
- 4:36the back ends of contracts.
- 4:39Speaker 2: Or when you get a player like Bryce hoff Right
- 4:41who doesn't live up.
- 4:42Speaker 3: And you can eat a certain amount of that dead money,
- 4:44but if all of it was guaranteed, that would be
- 4:47tough to eat because nobody would be taking it on.
- 4:49Speaker 2: It would be tough to trade.
- 4:50Speaker 3: And you'd have to have him on the team. Tougher
- 4:53to trade, I should say so. But I don't even
- 4:57think most fans understand the complexity of contracts. I just
- 5:00think that in general it's hard for fans to side
- 5:04with either millionaires or billionaires.
- 5:05Speaker 2: I think they try to stay neutral in it all.
- 5:07Speaker 1: Yeah, well, and you know that's the one thing is
- 5:11I do feel though, there is an element of if
- 5:14you don't perform and you end up getting cut. You
- 5:17can't just do that in the other sports because the
- 5:20element is hey, I still owe you five years thirty
- 5:22five million bucks. You're getting that whether I cut you
- 5:24or not. I can say, hey, I'm cutting you to
- 5:26do something. But there's still the economic Now, football some
- 5:29economics with the cap, you do take cap hits and
- 5:33stuff like that. You do get somebody for giving out
- 5:36bad contracts. You don't just automatically get out of them,
- 5:39but you get out of paying the guy.
- 5:41Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 5:43Speaker 3: And you know, there's also the element of it's sort
- 5:46of easier to default the player than say ownership or
- 5:51the owner.
- 5:51Speaker 2: So the owner also.
- 5:52Speaker 3: Has a job to do and to perform right as
- 5:55far as giving money out, hiring the right people, not
- 5:59just hiring eye people coaches, but also front office, and
- 6:04if ownership doesn't do their job, there's no money taken
- 6:07away from.
- 6:08Speaker 2: Them, you know what I'm saying.
- 6:09Speaker 3: So it's so much easier for fans to just say, well,
- 6:12these players think even if they don't, they just weren't
- 6:15in the right fit, or if they were overdrafted by
- 6:18an incompetent scouting staff, which we've seen quite often. Right,
- 6:22it never works that way where the common fan will
- 6:26blame the owner as much as the player.
- 6:30Speaker 1: Uh, It's funny because I feel like more and more,
- 6:33don't you feel like more and more in sports? Like
- 6:35there was a time we can go back and kind
- 6:37of revisit. It's funny because the Darryl Morey's kind of
- 6:40going through this right now, like what has he ever want?
- 6:43He's made all these mistakes and you know, his record
- 6:45would say he's won a lot, but just never won
- 6:47a title. Where Roseman was being you know, basically people
- 6:51wanted him fired and people were blaming the Eagles front office.
- 6:55I don't know about ownership so much. You know, Lourie
- 6:58has been able to kind of I know, not that
- 7:01he deserves criticism, but I'm saying he's never really been
- 7:03looked at as a negative here. But there was a
- 7:06time where people were kind of pressuring, why won't Jeffrey
- 7:09get rid of Howie? Right?
- 7:11Speaker 2: Oh, absolutely, there's no doubt.
- 7:14Speaker 3: I do think the GM probably is secondary to the
- 7:17player as far as people who get blamed.
- 7:19Speaker 2: But you know, whereas the owner, you.
- 7:21Speaker 3: Almost have to be like Woody Johnson of the Jets,
- 7:24like bad year after year after year. You know, the
- 7:28Bengals not aren't bad year after year, but they're the
- 7:30way they go about business. Yes, all the team, Yeah,
- 7:34right exactly, But even then it's still that's like the
- 7:38last line of defense rights. It's like when you're tired
- 7:41of blaming the players and the frontal office, then you
- 7:45shift to the owners.
- 7:47Speaker 1: Jeff Buscher Football at four from the Inside of the
- 7:49Birds podcast and of course you could check out the
- 7:51podcast on all podcasting platforms. As you kind of get
- 7:54through the summer. Here we're inside three weeks to training camp,
- 7:57we're kind of looking at all the football stories that
- 7:59will matter here, and we talked, you know, we had
- 8:01a question the other day for you in the mailbag
- 8:03that had to do with the NFC and any of
- 8:05the teams there. One of the teams you mentioned, San Francisco.
- 8:09A lot of people keep asking me about the forty
- 8:11nine ers and whether or not that is a team
- 8:14that had a bad year last year because of injuries,
- 8:18or do we think they're a legit challenger to Philadelphia, Washington, Detroit?
- 8:24Are they on that level yet? Do you think they're
- 8:26do we think they're back there? I thought that was
- 8:29an interesting team that I thought it was you that
- 8:31brought them up.
- 8:33Speaker 3: I had brought them up as a team that you know,
- 8:35I think a couple of months ago, I was looking
- 8:38at them and saying, you know, I can I actually
- 8:40predicted their their their bad season last year, and it happened,
- 8:44But and I also felt that they'd be primed for
- 8:47a bounce back this year. They've lost a lot of
- 8:50guys though, you know from you know, whether it's Trey
- 8:53Greenlaw or Hufanga. I mean, they lost They don't have
- 8:56Demo Samuel anymore, they lost their left tackles. Chiefs not
- 9:01their starting why he was starting in place of Trent Williams.
- 9:03But they're a team like kind of like the Rams
- 9:06two years ago, where you bank on their coaching staff,
- 9:11their ability to develop certain players, and the fact that
- 9:14they do have talent. And Christian McCaffery has been healthy
- 9:17all throughout the offseason, and he's obviously a game changing
- 9:21type player. Brock Perty has done well. Last year, he
- 9:24did not do well, but when he's been protected and
- 9:26had good his weapons around him in that offense, he's
- 9:29done really well. And then on defense, they stow Bosa
- 9:32and you know they got in. They brought in Bryce Hoff.
- 9:35They have another guy in the front seven who I'm
- 9:37not thinking of. The rush, the pass for pretty well.
- 9:39So they're a team that I think you have to
- 9:41reckon with because they're really well coached, and when they're
- 9:44well coached and they're healthy, they can beat anybody.
- 9:49Speaker 1: Then Perty, by the way, is now kind of established
- 9:52himself as the guy there. We'll see if they're well,
- 9:54we'll see what their offense looks differently with the you know,
- 9:58Debo not being there anymore. I you know, obviously had
- 10:01the injury, so we'll see how much different their offense
- 10:04is from the one from two years ago. Looking at
- 10:07some of the contenders in the NFC, I want to
- 10:09get your thoughts on Green Bay after we saw them
- 10:11in the playoffs. They were the team that everybody loved
- 10:13last year. Is that a team in the NFC that
- 10:16you're looking at as a challenger?
- 10:19Speaker 2: I think Green Bay is really good. You know, I
- 10:21mentioned the Rams.
- 10:23Speaker 3: You asked me, I think on Monday, who's the biggest
- 10:25threat to the Eagles.
- 10:26Speaker 2: In the NFC?
- 10:27Speaker 3: And we talked about the Rams, and we talked about
- 10:28the Lions, right, But I have no issue saying the
- 10:32Packers could very easily elbow their way into.
- 10:35Speaker 2: That group, and even ahead of that group.
- 10:37Speaker 3: You know, they got some speed at receiver with Golden
- 10:41right out of Texas, They've got to get a little
- 10:44bit more from their front four rush. But in general,
- 10:47they had a good defense last year. And if the
- 10:50quarterback plays twenty percent better than he did last year,
- 10:55he's that good. If he plays twenty percent better, then
- 10:58I think that there are really tough team.
- 11:03Speaker 1: It's funny because last year, wasn't he the guy that
- 11:05everybody thought was going to take that next jump? Did
- 11:07he not take the jump? We thought?
- 11:09Speaker 3: Well, I think he's sort of a victim of his
- 11:12own success in that he's so talented and so had
- 11:15such a big arm, and we saw it in the
- 11:17Eagles games. Sometimes he takes a few too many risks
- 11:21and they'll have He'll have a couple of turnovers or
- 11:23erratic throws that are are and just maybe four or five,
- 11:26but sometimes they mean the difference in the close games.
- 11:28Speaker 2: I don't they lost five games right last year.
- 11:30Speaker 3: I'd have to go back and check and see how
- 11:32many of them were one possession games or were really
- 11:35close in the end. But that's what I'm saying, Like,
- 11:40sometimes all it is is that, and that's why I
- 11:42say all he has to do is be say twenty
- 11:44percent better, and I think he'd be pretty good. You know,
- 11:47they lost to the Eagles by what five five points,
- 11:50so that was a one possession game, and they lost
- 11:52the Vikings by two I'm looking now, lost the Lions
- 11:55by ten, so that was only two percent.
- 11:58Speaker 2: But then they lost the Lions by.
- 11:59Speaker 3: Three, So I mean, ever, look at all there the
- 12:01loss of the Vikings by too, bears too and then
- 12:03the Eagles.
- 12:04Speaker 2: Obviously lost to in the playoffs.
- 12:05Speaker 3: But you know, five or their six loss seven six
- 12:08or seven losses were.
- 12:10Speaker 2: By five points or less. That's that to me.
- 12:12Speaker 3: It means they're a pretty formidable team if they just
- 12:14make a little bit more improvement.
- 12:16Speaker 1: All right, we're looking at the NFC contenders Jeff Boscher
- 12:19Football at four today. Who are the contenders to Philadelphia?
- 12:22We talked, you know, I think everybody kind of puts
- 12:24Detroit in there. We've talked about them before. But these
- 12:27other teams, now, these are like that next tier of team.
- 12:31I want to get your thoughts on Washington then, because
- 12:34not Washington Minnesota. You just brought them up. They were
- 12:37thirteen and three last year. They lost the quarterback. People
- 12:40didn't believe in them last year. But should we believe
- 12:43in them more this year?
- 12:45Speaker 3: Well, that's another team that I'm going to say that
- 12:48when you have a certain level of confidence and the
- 12:50coaching staff.
- 12:51Speaker 2: Some of the changes don't matter.
- 12:53Speaker 3: And after last year and what happened with Sam Darnold,
- 12:55I think you should have a lot of confidence in
- 12:57Kevin O'Connell.
- 12:58Speaker 2: He's done a really nice job there.
- 12:59Speaker 3: And then not just KOC, but obviously Brian Flores has
- 13:03transformed that defense since he got there.
- 13:06Speaker 2: And they have a lot of talent.
- 13:08Speaker 3: You know, They've got they signed Javon Hargrave, who did
- 13:11not have a great year with San Francisco, but now
- 13:14you're putting in next to Jonathan Gernard and you're putting
- 13:16him with you know, Jonathan Allen from from the Commanders,
- 13:19who's still a.
- 13:20Speaker 2: Good, good player. And they've got Van Ginkle there, They've
- 13:22got Isaiah Rodgers.
- 13:24Speaker 3: You know, they they made smart moves to improve what
- 13:28was already a pretty good defense. Their secondary could get
- 13:32a little better, we'll see. But again, when you have
- 13:34a front, when you do things that they do defensively
- 13:37that Brian Flores does, it kind of allows you to
- 13:39get away with not having the greatest secondary. And then
- 13:42of course they really upgraded their offensive line. They signed
- 13:44a couple of offensive linemen in free agency with Will
- 13:48Fryes and and Ryan Kelly from the Colts, and they
- 13:50drafted Donovan Jackson. So I think that they're gonna look different, Mike.
- 13:54I think that they're probably gonna be a little more
- 13:57run heavy, run centric, short pass and get JJ McCarthy's
- 14:01athleticism into the offense more so than Sam Donald's. So
- 14:04it might not be as downfield as you saw Sam
- 14:07Donald able to do. But I think that they are
- 14:10well stocked in the trenches to be a very good team.
- 14:13Speaker 2: They're on that second level to me, you know, that
- 14:16second level of contention.
- 14:17Speaker 1: Yeah, you might have brought up Seattle when we talked
- 14:21by born too as Seattle. Do you put them in
- 14:24NFC contender status or are they more wildcard wildcard?
- 14:29Speaker 3: I mean, I certainly would say their arrow is pointing
- 14:32more up than down.
- 14:34Speaker 2: I liked Gino Smith, to be honest with you, I
- 14:36still do.
- 14:37Speaker 3: I think he's actually a pretty good quarterback, but they
- 14:40let him go went with Sam Donald. Now that to
- 14:42me only works if you're running the same type of offense.
- 14:45But Klink Kubiak is their offensive coordinator and he is
- 14:48also of the Shanahan slash McVeigh a tree like Kevin O'Connell.
- 14:53Speaker 2: So that's a good spot.
- 14:55Speaker 1: You know.
- 14:55Speaker 2: Cooper Cup is there.
- 14:56Speaker 3: I'm not quite sure how effective he's going to be anymore,
- 14:59but we saw Jackson Smith and Chick would take a
- 15:01really big step up as the number one.
- 15:03Speaker 1: Why now, isn't it funny how fast guys lose it?
- 15:05I saw today Nelson Aguilar retired, ye, and he went back,
- 15:09you know, but it's like not that like and Nelson
- 15:11wasn't on the same level. But these wide receivers, it
- 15:13feels like they go from zero to sixty and then
- 15:16right back down to zero, like almost instantaneous. You go
- 15:19from awesome to like insignificant very quickly.
- 15:22Speaker 2: At that position. Yes, yes, very much so.
- 15:27Speaker 3: And so Seattle is the type of team I think
- 15:30that will have some more guys on the way up
- 15:32than the way down. Witherspoon in their corner is really good.
- 15:35Julian Love has played well since they signed him.
- 15:37Speaker 2: At safety.
- 15:38Speaker 3: Josh Job has actually played well for them since the
- 15:40Eagles let him go.
- 15:41Speaker 2: They drafted Nick.
- 15:44Speaker 1: He was a part of that group of when they
- 15:46had like five or six guys that were all like
- 15:48this guy and this guy and this guy and this guy.
- 15:51I guess he didn't stick.
- 15:53Speaker 3: No, no, but I think McDonald's doing the right thing. He's,
- 15:57you know, bringing in guys to fit his system. I
- 16:00like their pick when they drafted Gray's Abel, the offensive lineman.
- 16:03So they're not They're not the type of team that
- 16:07when you stack them up against the Eagles you can say, well,
- 16:08you got blue chip for blue chip, blue ship for
- 16:10blue chip. Yeah, well coached, well coached, and I think
- 16:13that they will look the way the head coach wants
- 16:16that defense to look. And he's a good he's a
- 16:18good schemer.
- 16:19Speaker 2: All right.
- 16:20Speaker 1: Well, well, we'll be taking a look at some of
- 16:21the NFC contenders the next couple of weeks. Here. We
- 16:24have our division previews with Andrew coming up on Thursdays,

- 17:02Speaker 2: Okay, don't think.
- 17:03Speaker 1: Me all you can eat crabs. Just start at four o'clock,
- 17:06but fifty cent wings for the Phillies game while we're here.
- 17:11Can't beat that all though. Game just ended. But you
- 17:13know it's funny. The bar was full. The game ended.
- 17:16Everyone's going to change and clean up for game two.
- 17:18They'll be back here, so we'll get the crabs at
- 17:21that point.
- 17:21Speaker 2: All right, Bud, gotta be in the garlic butter sauce.
- 17:23You'll thank me later. Take care of it.
