- 0:45And welcome back to the Boundary Corner Podcast along with my
- 0:49partners Brian Siegler, Jonathan Talley, and Shelton Moss.
- 0:52I am Curtis Wilson in this episode is brought to you by
- 0:56Doctor Jeremy Cats down at the Main Street Pharmacy in
- 0:58Blacksburg. Your friendly neighborhood
- 1:00pharmacy located at 301 S Main St. in Blacksburg.
- 1:06We all throwing all off here. Last week we were Wednesday
- 1:08night. We ain't done Tuesday in two
- 1:10weeks. Shelters back.
- 1:12It's Monday, boys, and it's been a long, long weekend.
- 1:16We have not done a Monday night episode and I cannot remember
- 1:19how long, man. Monday Night Raw, baby.
- 1:22Monday Night Raw. It's going to be RAW.
- 1:24We got a little double feature on the screen back here.
- 1:26Got a little double feature? Prayers up to Nick Chub.
- 1:30Man, I went in. Oh God, yeah.
- 1:32I went in, looked. I did.
- 1:34That's not good. And that stinks for him.
- 1:36Yeah, not great at all. Yeah.
- 1:40Prayers up to him. Prayers up for the fantasy
- 1:42owners that have him because I know some of y'all in big dollar
- 1:45leagues and y'all took him in the first round, so you know
- 1:49you'll lose your money now. But y'all, we got a ton to
- 1:51unload obviously. We're going to talk about the
- 1:53Rutgers game, we're going to talk about knowing the enemy and
- 1:56Marshall and everything in between real quick as usual, I
- 2:01kick off the episode, hashtag rally for Robbie.
- 2:03Again, it's another away game, so go down to the pharmacy then
- 2:07most 7 bucks get this in support of a great call.
- 2:10Shout out Grayson out on the West Coast real quick before we
- 2:14get into discussing the Rutgers game.
- 2:17There was a decommitment that anybody that knew anything.
- 2:22When the kid got the offer, he was going to be gone.
- 2:26And that's Eric Mensa flipping to Ohio State.
- 2:30Everybody that looked into that, anybody that knew any committed,
- 2:33basically it was said right. I know we talked about it.
- 2:36All four of us were on conversations about it.
- 2:38If he gets Ohio State, he's gone.
- 2:40The whole hope is they land one of their bigger DT's, you know,
- 2:44some top 100 player and they leave him alone, but
- 2:46unfortunately they didn't. Right.
- 2:49Yeah, that was the concern at the gate.
- 2:50Like, we knew, all right, we knew that Virginia Tech was
- 2:54probably a settle selection because he had his eyes on Ohio
- 2:58State. He hadn't gotten a committable
- 3:00offer at that time. He wanted to make sure that he
- 3:04had a spot somewhere and a boat that that that was of his
- 3:07choosing and not having to go with slim pickings at the end of
- 3:09the cycle. We were that choice, Ohio State
- 3:13said. Come on in the boat and here's
- 3:17where we are guys. Yeah, definitely.
- 3:19Big time, you know, big time loss because I feel like the
- 3:23trenches is what we need both sides of the ball.
- 3:25So to lose a defensive lineman, I don't know what they're going
- 3:32to put him at, but big guy like that, definitely not a easy pill
- 3:36to swallow, but like you said, Curtis, kind of.
- 3:40Expected from the beginning because it's just what we are as
- 3:42a program right now. We've got some building to do so
- 3:45we can hold on to kids like that and fight off those big program,
- 3:48but at this point we are who we are.
- 3:52Yep. Anything additional to add on
- 3:54this Shelton or you know? Nope.
- 3:57I'll have to get to the once. That's how it goes.
- 4:00So. Gotta keep.
- 4:01Gotta keep moving on and just keep finding a way to develop
- 4:04them. Yes, it is.
- 4:05All right. Well boys, that's all we got.
- 4:07In sort of the news and notes section, I pulled something out
- 4:10of there because we're going to talk about it later, but let's
- 4:12talk about it. It's to tell the truth.
- 4:14Tuesday, Monday Night Edition Hokies Fall 2, Rutgers, 3516.
- 4:22One of those I told CIGLA watching this game.
- 4:25Then Cigla got up with the families, grilled some burgers
- 4:28out, had a good time. Smash burgers.
- 4:31Wrong point. Burgers were on point Y'all
- 4:35y'all don't know that that's man can cook smash burgers on his
- 4:38griddle. We we partaked in two me and him
- 4:42did grubbed down to yeah but I told Brian my first thought on
- 4:50this game was pit last year. Similar vibes of they got out on
- 4:56us. We clawed back.
- 4:57We're right there. We need one good thing to happen
- 5:00and then the wheels fell off and we're going to talk about the
- 5:03wheels falling off, but we're going to talk about that.
- 5:06Some things did go well. That's what we start with.
- 5:09We start with the positives, What went well?
- 5:11And Brian, I'll let you, I'll let you kick it off on the
- 5:14offensive side of the ball. What is the one thing that we
- 5:17know went well? Well, it's been a hot fucking
- 5:20topic on the timeline, but drones proved he's quarterback
- 5:24one. That's what happened.
- 5:28If you're looking at what Tyler Bowen wants to do from a
- 5:31schematic standpoint on offense, Drones gives us the most
- 5:37complete version of that. Of the quarterbacks that we have
- 5:41on the roster right now that are ready to play, Drones gives us
- 5:43the most complete version of that, and we saw it.
- 5:47We saw it come to fruition with the way we were able to generate
- 5:51a somewhat competent rushing attack against the best rush
- 5:56defense we've we've played so far this season and a very good
- 5:59rush defense. And I didn't other than maybe
- 6:02some and then we'll talk about this.
- 6:03Some of the explosive plays, I didn't really see a drop off in
- 6:07terms of passing efficiency, very.
- 6:11Wells edged game, you know, like it was like it wasn't, you know,
- 6:16didn't blow me away with numbers as far as what he did.
- 6:19And I think 1 touchdown, 1 interception, 19 for 30 or 19
- 6:23for 31, something like that, 190 yards.
- 6:29Like you said, no, no drop off. You carry the ball 22 times
- 6:33though for like 75 yards. We haven't seen that in a while
- 6:38and and it just to me looked like plays were different when
- 6:42he was in there, you know, and I can say the kid was trying, he's
- 6:46got a lot of stuff to work on. But I can say the kid was in
- 6:49there giving it his all. He left it on the field and I
- 6:52think that the more that he gets comfortable.
- 6:55Playing with his guys and and running that offense, I think
- 7:01you can only get better. You know, that's just me.
- 7:03That's what I see. That's what I seen watching the
- 7:05game. I didn't see somebody who was,
- 7:08you know, kind of timid and scared to, you know, make a
- 7:11play. Now we had some excuse.
- 7:14Of course I know everybody know that.
- 7:15We got to tell the truth. Tell the truth to stay Monday
- 7:18night raw, whatever you want to call it.
- 7:21Yeah, we can't. We can't turn the ball over
- 7:23first play of the game, but. I think you got to go with him
- 7:26the rest of the year. Yeah, Sean, what you get, you
- 7:29get anything from a data point that kind of said, OK, here's
- 7:33where we were. I don't even want to say the
- 7:36first two weeks. To me ODU is G5.
- 7:38We played two Power Five teams back-to-back.
- 7:41Yes, they are different, but what?
- 7:43What sort of data points are we seeing that might say where
- 7:46we're feeling in our eyes saying leaving QB One is drones?
- 7:51Yeah, I mean, well, it definitely got better.
- 7:52I mean, the Purdue game from a rushing perspective, in terms of
- 7:56EPA expected points added was literally the worst rushing
- 7:59performance by any team, any FPS team, any game this year.
- 8:03So it got better. It did get better.
- 8:04I thought the Russian game was a lot better.
- 8:06They had some success running those QB draws.
- 8:09Sometimes there is miscommunication between, you
- 8:11know, the quarterback and the halfback as far as you know what
- 8:13they were trying to do, kind of, you know, not sure where where
- 8:16each guy was in the backfield. But those things kind of are
- 8:19expected with with the first time KV starter, but I thought
- 8:22it was good. I mean I think his legs provide
- 8:24a lot, a lot for the team. He's much more comfortable as a
- 8:28runner obviously than Wells is. And I think he fits the the
- 8:31vision for Bowen in terms of just that that RPO you know,
- 8:35zone running schema offense in terms of just the ability to
- 8:37create plays with his legs. So you know, stats wise, nothing
- 8:40really jumps off the board a ton.
- 8:42But if you're talking about just a relative to what we've seen
- 8:44from Tech the past couple of games, it was a lot better.
- 8:47Yeah, if you say that and I'll throw up because you said Purdue
- 8:50was the worst game, first two games this year, net brushing of
- 8:55120 yards, that is the 60 yards of the game.
- 8:57We were at 129. That brushing for the game
- 9:04versus Rutgers, which is a significantly better brush
- 9:07defense and significantly better defense in general.
- 9:12So I see that and I see 100% improvement.
- 9:14The only thing that changed was Conran drones.
- 9:20He didn't have his top 2 outer speakers.
- 9:22Jalen Lane was out. We know that Ali's going to be
- 9:28out for a while, if not the whole season.
- 9:30If the reason what he did without those two guys on the
- 9:34field and and the way I loved it he locked on one guy all day
- 9:38that we didn't Holloway X, GB Gosnell even that is Aiden
- 9:44Green. The freshman Aquan Wright had
- 9:46catched Awon Lofton had catched. It wasn't like he locked on one
- 9:50guy and that's all he found all day.
- 9:51There were some tremble drills we made.
- 9:53Good place. But the guy that jumped out as
- 9:55far as I I'm concerned, Daquan Felton proved he is for real. 6
- 10:03catches, 84 yards and if he doesn't miss that one I think it
- 10:09would have been that was a 50 plus yard default, 130 plus and
- 10:13an extra touchdown. Belden's for real.
- 10:15When did you say stat tally? Oh yeah, man, he looked good.
- 10:18I've been screaming to get him involved in just the game,
- 10:21period. You know, they tried to go long
- 10:24to get him involved, but I seen him, you know, one of my
- 10:27favorite players that I seen them close to the red zone or
- 10:31close to the goal line. They hit him with a screen, you
- 10:33know, and then they just let him work.
- 10:34It's kind of extension of the running game.
- 10:37Just pop up, throw them the ball.
- 10:39Kudos to the blocking man. Kudos to the blocking when you
- 10:43when you get your wide receivers out there blocking for a big
- 10:48time. Receiver like that.
- 10:49But we needed him to to get some confidence because he looked so
- 10:54deflated against Purdue. You know to keep running routes
- 10:57and the players are just not going your way.
- 11:01You're just not getting the looks you're just not getting.
- 11:04You're just not getting the stats, you know?
- 11:06And you can see him on the sideline.
- 11:07I got a video of him on the sideline kind of pacing.
- 11:10He's just, he's just frustrated, you know, he's transferred in
- 11:13and he wants to be involved. Of course he is.
- 11:16Of course he does. So to see him get started, I'm
- 11:19hoping it can, you know, give us some kind of spark moving
- 11:22forward because we're going to need it, man.
- 11:24We're going to need all hands on deck.
- 11:26Tucker Holloway is gimpy. He looked gimpy.
- 11:29I said it when he returned the kick.
- 11:31He looked gimpy. We don't know when Lane's coming
- 11:35back. Jennings is is is out for the
- 11:38foreseeable future like right was still banged up.
- 11:43We are banged up, man. You know what I'm saying?
- 11:45So anybody that we can see flash, let's let let's let him
- 11:50meet. Please let him meet.
- 11:53What about you, Brian? What did you see from him, other
- 11:56than some of the stuff Tally pointed out?
- 11:59So when I looked at this team, it almost was like.
- 12:04We had a similar wide receiver makeup as we had most of last
- 12:08year, just with a little bit of an extra bump, right?
- 12:11Because I feel like Felton skill set is kind of similar to what
- 12:15Caleb Smith brought to the table.
- 12:17I feel like Felton is a little bit more physical than Caleb
- 12:21was, but I think that in terms of their overall skill set, good
- 12:26combination of speed and size, right?
- 12:29And then you got most of the cast of characters that we had
- 12:32last year with with XTB and and Benji Gosnell kind of thrown in
- 12:36there. But it kind of kind of reset the
- 12:40the level of the the wide receiver room again kind of to
- 12:43that 2022 level. And I thought that given those
- 12:47limitations, I think everybody kind of did did what did what
- 12:50they could expect or the most you could expect from them.
- 12:54I think Felon had a good game again.
- 12:55One drop that was. You know, pretty big.
- 12:58But I think he showed that he could be a guy that you could
- 13:02lean on when you don't have one or two other guys in the game
- 13:05for an extended stretch there. So you know we'll see how we
- 13:08move forward with that. But probably his best game all
- 13:12around and obviously you know he he was more of the focal point
- 13:15this week than we've seen the last couple on anything data
- 13:19wise on, I know we're we're very, very short into the season
- 13:25with Felton but anything on him. No, he's graded out fine.
- 13:29I know he missed he missed one pass buck on his screen pass I
- 13:33think in the first half which was not not great.
- 13:35But no I think he's been good and also the the touch on that
- 13:38he scored was a good a good route concept.
- 13:40Their Rutgers, I don't know what their coverage was but they're
- 13:42playing some, you know deep zone defense where I think the corner
- 13:45was backing off and he kind of came over as a crosser and drone
- 13:49sent him for a big score. So good, good route against that
- 13:52particular coverage. Yeah.
- 13:54So again, offensively not all bad.
- 13:57I think the other thing that I looked at that caught my eye
- 14:01immediately with the exception of the last one when we were
- 14:04down 35 to 16, you know how many three and outs we had not
- 14:08withstanding turnovers, how many goose egg we did not have 1/3
- 14:16and out less the turnovers. We didn't have a three and out
- 14:20we moved the ball every time. Because if you think about it,
- 14:23we pinned them deep a couple times.
- 14:24We got the midfield a couple times, third drive of the game,
- 14:27we missed the field goal, which really was deflating because it
- 14:32was a 37 yarder, you know, and John Love had made those.
- 14:37I told Brian I like he must have been aiming at the inside of the
- 14:40upright to miss it where he did. But that is what it is
- 14:43offensively. Let's talk about the defense
- 14:46because we got a couple points for the defense here.
- 14:51They're going to come out a little bit more.
- 14:53But you know, other than that one big explosive run Winstead
- 14:58had that 34 yard touchdown run, the other ten runs he had were
- 15:04roughly for about 53 yards. So if you tell me a running
- 15:09quarterback is averaging 5 yards of carry all day, every day,
- 15:14twice on Sundays? Yeah, besides that man, he had
- 15:1840 yards passing. You know, I know we're going to
- 15:21probably touch on that in a little bit, but if you can, if
- 15:26you can hold a quarterback, if you tell me, we hold a
- 15:28quarterback to 46 yards throwing the ball and they are not
- 15:32running A2 quarterback system, they only have whatever, 50
- 15:37yards passing, I would never think we lose 35 to 16.
- 15:41But again. At least think it would be a
- 15:44close game, like the way it turned out.
- 15:47I mean, that ended up being a blowout.
- 15:48Yeah it all came down to those big runs like you said kind of
- 15:52reminiscent of the pick game last year man.
- 15:55You know you get to the point where okay we get a stop here we
- 16:00we got something and and and we we let them blow off a big ruin
- 16:04even you know and and again I know we touch on a lot of stuff
- 16:08but even thinking about that I think it was a third down call
- 16:13maybe like third and 132 and. We got everybody flying inside
- 16:19and they're running back busted to the outside for a 55 yard
- 16:21touchdown and what a turnover man you got.
- 16:24You just can't as a team, you can't do that, Brian.
- 16:28Don't say it yet. Brian's got that play already.
- 16:30Don't don't say anything on that.
- 16:32You'll make him jump a segment ahead, Segment ahead.
- 16:36What else, Brian? Brian, I felt like sitting with
- 16:40you. You kept saying better raps,
- 16:43better raps, especially up front plus in the front seven, which
- 16:46if the front seven had tackled better against?
- 16:49They don't get as much as they did offensively.
- 16:53Yeah, I thought the tackling, especially with the linebackers,
- 16:56improved in this game. Unfortunately, there was other
- 17:00holes that opened up elsewhere in the in that aspect of it, but
- 17:02I thought the linebackers played pretty well.
- 17:05I thought the front tackled pretty well.
- 17:07We didn't quite get home on some of those those blitzes, but I
- 17:10thought we did a pretty good job of.
- 17:13Tackling when we were in a position to make a play in the
- 17:15run game, you know the the the big problem was is that we'd
- 17:18have these long stretches of defense where we're forcing 3
- 17:21and outs and then we let a big one go like very much a boom or
- 17:25bust defensive game overall. So it's really hard to kind of
- 17:30wrap your head around that because you know it was, again
- 17:34going circling back to Curtis is very much like the pit game
- 17:36where you either were giving up nothing or everything.
- 17:42Sheldon, do you have anything on like where we are currently
- 17:45explosive plays wise? I do not back in looking up
- 17:50quickly. All right.
- 17:50Well, while he's looking that up, I think something we are
- 17:53noticing is and you mentioned with the 46 yards tally, the
- 17:57back end coverage wise, regardless who's back there,
- 18:00regardless how they're rotating the safeties, regardless if
- 18:02they're putting the young guys in at corner, the the back end
- 18:06coverage, those concepts with those young guys are getting it.
- 18:10And obviously the guys who've been here a while are
- 18:12absolutely, absolutely getting it because.
- 18:20And you got to understand too like this.
- 18:22I know this isn't a moral victory podcast or a excuse
- 18:26podcast, but the truth is what the truth is.
- 18:29Like somebody said the other day, we are down three out of
- 18:34four captains the third game of the season.
- 18:38You know, you got Schrollman went out in that game.
- 18:42Yes, he did. Schrollman went out and you can
- 18:43see when he went out it was a different defense.
- 18:46Schrollman went out. Kiante Jenkins is hurt.
- 18:50You got Jalen Jones and a true freshman back there.
- 18:53Jalen Jones was a wide receiver last year and most Phillips was
- 18:57in high school. High school last year.
- 19:00So man, it is it, dude, we are. I said man, we got to be we we
- 19:04got to go tip somebody off, man. We got the worst any college
- 19:09football team I've ever watched. But again, man, it is a lot
- 19:13moving back there and I got to get at least some kudos to the
- 19:16young guys, man. They are getting in now seeing
- 19:19Dante Lovett coming in and and and absolutely put his face in a
- 19:23couple of tackles and that's a big deal we're going to need,
- 19:27we're going to need stuff like that.
- 19:28We'll need guys to develop. Yeah.
- 19:30I mean, Tally, you talked about it like.
- 19:33We we said at the start of the season we were making our
- 19:34predictions that looking at this roster, it's improved but the
- 19:39margins are razor fucking thin because when your starters go
- 19:46out you get real young real quick.
- 19:49And the two areas that we are have some actual experience in
- 19:54are also two areas that we under recruited for significant years.
- 19:59Mention of the D line and O line.
- 20:01So that those are two things that are right now working in
- 20:05tandem is that we've got a bunch of injuries in areas that we did
- 20:07improve in, in some ways and you couple that with your other two
- 20:13units are now harder to hide. The two units that you knew were
- 20:17going to be problems this year are harder to hide.
- 20:22So it's it's it's a lot, it's a lot of snowballing happening,
- 20:25happening right now with those injuries and and that kind of
- 20:27puts us in that situation we were talking about.
- 20:29You know, you're starting to kind of ratchet down those
- 20:33expectations because we said it. Things aren't going exactly the
- 20:38way you want to from an injury standpoint.
- 20:40Well, you can never predict injuries, and we'll talk about
- 20:42that in just a few minutes here. But Sheldon, you said you were
- 20:44able to find it. And I know I'm going to take
- 20:46this and we're going to pivot it in a second, but Sheldon, what
- 20:49are we looking like? Explosive plays wise on defense.
- 20:52Not good. I just focus on the explosive
- 20:54rushing plays allowed. Tech is 125th in number of 10
- 20:59plus yard rushing plays allowed and if you'll get 20 plus yards
- 21:03they are 4th to last ahead of only.
- 21:06West Kentucky, Buffalo and North Texas.
- 21:08So 125th 127 out of 131. So 133 actually, yes.
- 21:14I'm I'm sorry, forgot you don't. Don't say Houston State.
- 21:18Sure they. Got a boy corner?
- 21:20Let's not talk about that often, Sam Houston, hey.
- 21:24But I think let's pivot it over into the what went bad because
- 21:27you know Brian, go ahead and go to it because you you mentioned
- 21:31it all afternoon especially after struggling went out.
- 21:34What's causing the explosive run plays?
- 21:36I'd love to. I'd love to have the breakdown
- 21:38of where we went from week two to week four.
- 21:43Yeah, I mean, I I feel like there's a couple things at play
- 21:45here. Number one, we saw kind of the
- 21:47return of the cascade effect from last season where you have
- 21:52a bad play and that leads to another bad play.
- 21:54The The bad part is, is that that happened right out the gate
- 21:58for us, right? We had a we had a fumble.
- 22:01One play later, it's a touchdown.
- 22:02We're already. Explosive run play there's been.
- 22:07Three offensive plays run and and you started with the ball
- 22:10and now you're down a touchdown, so.
- 22:13And it was a nobody touched anybody.
- 22:16No it. Was just deflated as soon as you
- 22:19get the over pursuit and then the the lanes like it parted
- 22:22like the Red Sea pal right up the middle.
- 22:27So the other problem is that you know we're we're looking at the
- 22:32safety situation. This goes back to the injuries.
- 22:34But as you said we've got Jalen Jones, most Phillips playing a
- 22:40large majority of the snaps in this game.
- 22:42And I feel like from a from from the perspective of coverage,
- 22:49there's not a big drop off with those two compared to the the
- 22:53two starters this year People's and Jalen Strumman, there's not
- 22:56a huge drop off there. Where there is a drop off is in
- 23:01that run. There's run fits in the run
- 23:03coverage. We they are struggling right now
- 23:07with fits, pursuit angles and pretty much everything that they
- 23:13need to do in terms of run support.
- 23:16It wasn't, it wasn't, it wasn't great last week.
- 23:20It was very bad this week. Well, the 55 yard run Brian, we
- 23:24were we we sat there and watched that and as soon as it happened,
- 23:27as soon as they showed the replay, blind screamed.
- 23:30Because I think we looked on Twitter and someone was like,
- 23:32what's Strong doing? And Brian's like they're in man,
- 23:36he says. Strong.
- 23:37Strong is running with his man, as he should.
- 23:40The safety is supposed to replace that.
- 23:42He he is now the Force player. He was not the Force player.
- 23:47He well, he stayed inside. Yeah.
- 23:49Because if you, if you look at I wish, I wish we had time to pull
- 23:52it. We had to do this 24 hours
- 23:54notice. But you said as soon as Strong
- 23:58crossed his back, he should have taken with three steps and
- 24:01effectively turned his body to leverage inside.
- 24:04He did, and he stayed right there.
- 24:05That tight end got off on him in two seconds off tackle outside
- 24:12and I mean there wasn't a great angle from the from the backside
- 24:15safety either the the backside safety over pursued.
- 24:18So it was really both safeties were now out of position.
- 24:22Were you about to say Tally? I'm just saying that's what a
- 24:24good coach team does like they'll exploit a broken play or
- 24:28a weakness. And you know that play wasn't
- 24:30designed to go for 55 yard touchdown.
- 24:33They were trying to get a first down.
- 24:35But that running back, he's, he's a good running back and
- 24:38he's a well coach running back and he bounce that thing to the
- 24:41outside and he was off to the racing.
- 24:42So those run fits have to get better if we want to slow
- 24:46somebody down. I like what what y'all mentioned
- 24:49there. Brian and Tally talking about
- 24:54that first one, nobody wanted to touch anybody and some of those
- 24:57we were just way too aggressive and and what we're talking
- 25:01about, there are times they're too, those safeties are too
- 25:03passive and there's times they're too aggressive.
- 25:06And to me that's a youth thing, That's a youth thing because
- 25:11there's nothing you can do because if you tell them, hey,
- 25:15you got to be more aggressive and then the next time they be
- 25:18aggressive. And they completely overshoot
- 25:20the gap, but they completely missed the fit.
- 25:23Hey, you got calm down within the back 15 yards and the guys
- 25:26getting way up field Sheldon. Well, this, this is what happens
- 25:30when you have two guys that are playing that you expected to
- 25:33play 2025% of the snaps in the game playing 75 eighty 90% of
- 25:38the snaps of. The game they playing, all of
- 25:40them, and there's only so much because we're, I think there's a
- 25:42snap count out there about Mansour.
- 25:45And Sewer's trying to play some. They're trying to put Canteen in
- 25:47those safety situations. They're trying to rotate those
- 25:50guys to help it out. But eventually it's like they're
- 25:54still, even if you rotate perfectly, they're still going
- 25:56to be bringing 60% shown that. Were you able to get those the
- 26:00the the Moss and Jalen run grades?
- 26:03I, I I just got to hear it, if we got it.
- 26:06It was. I know for Jones it was.
- 26:08It was in the I think his grade for this game was in the 20s for
- 26:12run, for run defense. So, and for the season he's in
- 26:16the 40s, which? I think is.
- 26:19I think is the third worst among Power 5 safeties, so it's been
- 26:24rough. So we're not just talking about
- 26:27it to talk about it, we're talking about it to.
- 26:33To bring the point up, but the point also has to be made y'all.
- 26:37You're not going to take freshmen.
- 26:38You're not going to take a guy who's switching positions and
- 26:41make them elite safeties or very tight, competent safeties in
- 26:45less than three games. Get your heads out your asses if
- 26:48you're thinking like that. We don't have Stroman back
- 26:50there, but people's back there. People were dogging on people's
- 26:53earlier this season. You wish he was there.
- 26:55Now you got to think, don't just say we need everybody needs to
- 26:59be fired. We need to get rid of everybody.
- 27:02That's not how it works, right, Sheldon?
- 27:04You can't develop someone in three games.
- 27:07Yeah, I would also add to that Jalen Jones went to Thomas
- 27:10Jefferson High School, which is where near where I live.
- 27:13Shout to the 804, the the competition level in Richmond
- 27:17City is not great and also it is not great at his high school.
- 27:21So he was very much a developmental guy that kind of
- 27:24had to come in and learn the game.
- 27:26I would assume that his ranking was because, you know, obviously
- 27:28he's a really talented athlete. But he's very much in like that,
- 27:31that early stage of development. So this is not a guy where you
- 27:34can expect him to be, you know, to be productive 43 games into
- 27:37his, essentially his collegiate career.
- 27:39So there's going to be some growing things.
- 27:42All righty. Another thing that went bad, and
- 27:45as I look at the statistics here is we did not get home any.
- 27:50We did not get one sack. We were there a couple times.
- 27:53But I think what sucks even more is we only had three tackles for
- 27:56loss. And Brian, you mentioned this
- 27:59was a chance to exploit them there.
- 28:02We probably should have been closer to 7:00 to 9:00.
- 28:05But again, we did miss some tackles, we missed some fits
- 28:08where they were getting positive yards out.
- 28:12Anything you feel or do y'all think this was just tally,
- 28:16Brian, primarily y'all is just just this is what that system is
- 28:21like. If you do the wrong things up
- 28:23front, even more burn in the back.
- 28:26Well, I mean, even just some of it is, is just how tough you
- 28:30are. You know what I'm saying?
- 28:31Like, you can have the good videos, you can talk about lunch
- 28:34bell defense, you can talk about when it comes down to it.
- 28:36I think we talked last week when somebody pulled somebody down, I
- 28:40think it was Kelly Lawson pulled somebody down by their jersey
- 28:43while he was getting blocked. Like that's just a toughness
- 28:47plate. Yeah, you got to be strong to do
- 28:49that. But like, that doesn't feel good
- 28:51to get your fingers wrapped up in a jersey and pull somebody
- 28:54down. But it's just you want it more
- 28:56than the person that is on the other side of the ball and some
- 28:59plays we don't want it more than them.
- 29:01When you go against a team like Rutgers that is coached by their
- 29:04coach, I mean, everybody knows that they're going to be,
- 29:07they're going to be well coached and tough and that's just how
- 29:11they played. They just played physical.
- 29:12They just were more physical than us.
- 29:16I don't know if it's just because of injuries.
- 29:18I don't know if it's just because of youth, but.
- 29:21We got to get to the point where we take some stuff personal and
- 29:24we we go and we produce with that you know so yeah I see.
- 29:29I see Andre thank you man. I see you back.
- 29:32I'm I'm you know just because you put that put his put his
- 29:35quote up right here, man. Put his put his comment up and
- 29:38when we said we need urban mind so I'll just I'll speak on that
- 29:45for a few minutes man. I get it.
- 29:47I get it. I'm not going to tell you how to
- 29:49be a fan, what to say, what not to say.
- 29:52But I will tell you that ain't happening.
- 29:55If you you sit at home and you fantasize about all this stuff
- 30:00and think about this stuff, you will go crazy, man.
- 30:03My, my DM's and my Twitter goes crazy every day.
- 30:08And guess what? I'll get on there and I'll joke
- 30:10about it and I'll mess with people and I'll let them mess
- 30:12with me. But when I get off Twitter, I
- 30:14got a son that plays baseball who was at the baseball field
- 30:17all day yesterday. If I sit around and thought
- 30:19about Virginia Tech's program, I would be a depressed
- 30:22motherfucker. Like, you got to let it go, man.
- 30:25You know, I get what you're saying and I understand where
- 30:28you're coming from, but I do also understand how college
- 30:31football works. It ain't gonna happen for us,
- 30:34for us to get where we want to go.
- 30:35People say, oh, see, this was what happened if we brought Dion
- 30:38in. Dion ain't coming here.
- 30:41You can talk about people that we should have got.
- 30:43We should have got Shane. We should have got Kirby Smart.
- 30:46You don't. It ain't happening.
- 30:48We got Brett Pride, and I'm not saying we got to like him.
- 30:51I got a lot of questions about the coaching staff, but I'm not
- 30:54going to rack my brain about that coaching staff.
- 30:57I'm just going to call it. You said call the spade a spade.
- 30:59I'm going to call it how I see it every week, but I'm going to
- 31:03get my time to vent and then I'm going to let it go and we're
- 31:05going to go to the next week and then if you rack up enough
- 31:08losses, he's going to be gone anyway.
- 31:10I mean, just keeping it real. I kind of take it back.
- 31:12I talk about my son a lot because that's that's.
- 31:17That's what I watch like. That's what I equate a lot of
- 31:19sports to. My son's team got picked up by a
- 31:22big travel ball organization and people don't understand
- 31:27development anymore. My son's team, man, I've seen
- 31:30these kids since they were 7-8 years old.
- 31:34My son went in the travel ball and he but they couldn't.
- 31:39He couldn't throw the ball across the field, and he was a
- 31:41good baseball player, but he couldn't throw the ball from
- 31:43from first to third without bouncing.
- 31:47And it's just that cultures have been with them since, like I
- 31:50said, seven or eight years old. And now these get these kids are
- 31:54getting bigger, they're getting stronger.
- 31:56And we show up to this. We show up to this tournament
- 31:59down in in Birmingham. If you guys ever get a chance to
- 32:02go to Rick Woodfield in Birmingham, it is in the ghetto,
- 32:05it is in the hood. It is scary when you turn on 3rd
- 32:09Ave. When you have to pull in them
- 32:11barbed wire fences, it looks a little shaky.
- 32:14But when you get inside that facility and you go see that
- 32:19field, that what the old Negro League games were played, man,
- 32:22it's just does something to you, man.
- 32:24It's an awesome, awesome venue, you know, And I was so happy
- 32:28that those kids got to play there and we played against a
- 32:30couple of Hoover teams, which, you know, it's pretty much home
- 32:33games for them. We also played at.
- 32:37Birmingham Southern College. But anyway, so those Hoover
- 32:40teams are pretty much at home and they've never seen our kids.
- 32:42Our kids don't count. Our kids don't go to All Star
- 32:45Games. They had never seen us.
- 32:48We just showed up and it was like, who is this team?
- 32:50We were the only team that went undefeated and we kicked
- 32:53everybody's ass and we were much better than everybody we played.
- 32:57So I take that back to the Virginia Tech program.
- 33:01Sometimes you just got to develop, man.
- 33:03And I ain't saying just trust the process.
- 33:05You got to be in the process. You got to.
- 33:07You got to when you're mad. You got to let the coaches know
- 33:09it's okay to tweet. Hey, I don't like that.
- 33:12Maybe they'll see it and change it.
- 33:14We've been crying about the quarterback for how long?
- 33:16We got to see drones and we like what we see.
- 33:18So hang in there, man. Hang in there.
- 33:20Don't let it. Don't let it tell your day up.
- 33:22Don't let it tell your week up. Let it go about Sunday
- 33:25afternoon. Go ahead, Curtis.
- 33:26I'm getting ready to say I don't know what we would have done 35
- 33:30years ago. The Frank years go Look at
- 33:34Frank's record. Y'all up to 1993.
- 33:36Some of y'all would have probably jumped off a building
- 33:39some of those years, 2:00 and 9:00 and all that, and not went
- 33:42having one winning season up from 1987 to 1993.
- 33:47I know it's a different store. It's a different time, it's a
- 33:49different place. But know that.
- 33:53Everybody has their down and tally.
- 33:55You've been mentioning them a lot.
- 33:56And I'm going to just say it one second.
- 33:58Go look at where Florida State was just a handful of years ago.
- 34:00Yes, I know they get more elite talent, but Norvell has also
- 34:03developed that talent. He got a lot of talented guys
- 34:05and he's developed them. All right, Brian, what else went
- 34:10bad from your perspective? This is Offensive Line podcast,
- 34:17right? This is an offensive line
- 34:18podcast. It is.
- 34:19All right. All right.
- 34:20So I will say something bold. It's not bold, it's right.
- 34:27Say it in that opinion I I you know he was getting a lot of
- 34:31props in the all season about being improved and being healthy
- 34:35and all this other stuff. Parker Clements is an absolute
- 34:39liability and right title right now.
- 34:43Charlie. And you watched the tape from
- 34:44yesterday, right? You didn't just.
- 34:45This isn't just. Yeah, I was.
- 34:46I watched the tape. This is not just live, this is
- 34:50not I've I've watched everything at least twice.
- 34:55His feet are lazy. In the run game.
- 34:57He doesn't really bring his hands well.
- 35:00He often looks like he doesn't know what he's doing in the run
- 35:04game, especially in something that's not zone like any
- 35:09anything that has gap scheme. He just looks lost, which
- 35:13explains a lot of last year and most of this year.
- 35:18So I'm just I'm ready to see a mix up whether that's.
- 35:24If you don't lose shit, go down fighting.
- 35:27Yeah, let's. Park the Clemens.
- 35:30Change it. Hey man, you look cool.
- 35:34You had a cool looking bid one time on a on a on a picture.
- 35:37Royal King probably has a great place for you to work.
- 35:42Y'all need to be at right tackle right now.
- 35:44Sorry buddy. Hopefully you watch this podcast
- 35:47and you say fuck that dude, I'm going to go out here and show
- 35:49him and you plaster my face on the other team's helmet and you
- 35:52go and run through that helmet. But I need to be the
- 35:56visualization like. What I don't need you to do like
- 35:59if I get. Water in here.
- 36:00Visualize me talking shit. About it, We don't need to get
- 36:04behind your guard and give him the Hamlet maneuver ever again.
- 36:07We just want you to block man. But it's not just him, man.
- 36:11Our line has to get better. But Brian, like you, I knew you
- 36:15were going when you said this was bold.
- 36:17It's not that bold, man. It's right.
- 36:20He's he's got to be better. I know.
- 36:22Sheldon. Sheldon, I'm not trying to put
- 36:23you on the spot. You don't have to look nothing
- 36:24up. You probably can just look at
- 36:26the camera and say, yeah, he's pretty bad.
- 36:29He's his scores have to be horrible, man.
- 36:32I think Brody Meadows came in and played much better than than
- 36:36a lot of people on our line. Just mix it up.
- 36:39Let's mix it up. Let's see some different stuff,
- 36:42because what we're doing is not working.
- 36:44What is that grade by the way? Shell and I mean I just just for
- 36:47confirmation. I mean, I don't, I don't even
- 36:49know. Like I hadn't paid too much
- 36:50attention to oh, line grades because I feel like there's no
- 36:52point because you can just tell the eye tests they're not
- 36:55they're not getting it done. And that's.
- 36:56I mean to me that's an eye test position.
- 36:58Like you can just tell they're not the footwork is the footwork
- 37:01is bad. The angles are bad.
- 37:02The, you know, the speed. They're just they're just not
- 37:05getting the job done like they can.
- 37:06And some of the plays too like. If we block them up, right?
- 37:09I mean there there'd be some big gainers in there, but they just
- 37:12can't. They're just not playing a sign
- 37:13of football. And right now Drones is the
- 37:16Band-Aid to the offensive line. It's again why you need from
- 37:19averaging 1A carry to almost 3 1/2 right now.
- 37:24I'm I'm going to take 3 1/2 all day because it's a semblance of
- 37:27an offense. It's a semblance of a third and
- 37:29two you might actually get it. But I think to y'all's point.
- 37:33And and like, you know, you're mentioning bad angles and stuff,
- 37:36Sheldon. It comes to a point in time.
- 37:38Right now we've got 3 two young guys on the line.
- 37:43It comes to a point where it's like we've just got to keep
- 37:46trying these young guys. Because if if there is not that
- 37:48big of a difference in the gap between what Parker's doing and
- 37:51what Brody's doing or you know, if we talked about, I know it's
- 37:55been mentioned, Jack Hollyfield, shout out Michael Yost, put
- 37:59Hollyfield, Senator, get Kate Moore back to his guard position
- 38:02where you know he can be and put Brody at right tackle.
- 38:05And put Brody at right tackle. What's it going to hurt?
- 38:08You're one and two right now, and you see where your struggles
- 38:11are and you know that is what it is.
- 38:15Part of the thing, that part of the thing that we wanted to see
- 38:17last year was we just wanted to see somebody actually fight for
- 38:22the job. You know what I'm saying?
- 38:23Like everybody kind of felt like, you know, Grant Wells
- 38:27didn't. He didn't just had a fire body,
- 38:30you know what I'm saying? Just like I know I'm going to be
- 38:32the starter. I'm all we got.
- 38:34It is what it is. If I mess up, like scare
- 38:37somebody, you know, hey, you're not playing no more.
- 38:39We playing the young guys. You know, sometimes competition
- 38:42breeds some. I mean, it's going freaking make
- 38:48a diamond or bust a pipe there. You go.
- 38:51Let's, let's see what we let's see what we can find.
- 38:54Let's see what we can find, man, tell them, Hey, sit out for a
- 38:57couple of you going to sit out. You going to stand over here
- 39:00with me and watch somebody else do it?
- 39:02And then rotate them back in. I just need to see something
- 39:04something picks up, man. Because and again like Curtis
- 39:08has been saying the whole time, I mean the offensive line is
- 39:12atrocious, man is I don't even know what to say.
- 39:16Like watching some stuff. From my standpoint, being a a
- 39:20tight end like our tight ends aren't great at blocking but
- 39:25they're blocking better than the line sometimes.
- 39:27Like it's just it's no hard in blocking so.
- 39:30Yeah, we can go on and on about that, but we ain't got that much
- 39:33time. We we we don't we could go on
- 39:35and on but until we see something different on the field
- 39:37we we continue to address it under this section because
- 39:41realistically is the only thing that can be done now is they're
- 39:45going to be they're going to be here until we they're average
- 39:47over 4 yards carry. To Shay Wes Osborne.
- 39:51Yes, we need a flex seal for the offensive line, but they're
- 39:54going to probably be in this section until until they average
- 39:56over 4 yards of carry. So until they're average over 4
- 39:59yards of carry. They're going to be in this
- 40:01section. Then they're going to be in this
- 40:02section all year. I say if we can stick it 3 1/2
- 40:05for multiple weeks we take them out of the section because the 3
- 40:081/2 if you run it 3 * 3 1/2 yards you get a first down.
- 40:12Yes Sir, we're averaging 4. That means we're probably going
- 40:14over 150 a game, which is exactly where you want to be.
- 40:17At a minimum we went 130 week. On the drones, think if the
- 40:20meshes get better. Think if the passing gets
- 40:24better, the lanes will open. All right, we we've hit this
- 40:27already a little bit. But did anything happen?
- 40:30We're not prepared for. And I I got our our buddy David
- 40:33Cunningham's Twitter up from Saturday night, 2 deep injuries.
- 40:39There are 22 people in the 2 deep.
- 40:41So somebody do the math. Wells is hurt.
- 40:44Jennings is hurt. Lane is hurt.
- 40:47Tisdale is out and then hurt. Kianta Jenkins is hurt.
- 40:50That's your people's is hurt. Stroman's hurt.
- 40:52We knew right. Has been banged up.
- 40:54Y'all, that's a third. That's a third of your two deep
- 41:00good teams who have developed and have good players could
- 41:04potentially be struggling. If you have a third of your two
- 41:08deep banged up, I don't even think that's a question.
- 41:11You haven't even mentioned Burgos with his shoulder.
- 41:14Yeah, but he's playing at least. Yeah, but I'm saying you didn't
- 41:17mention that. So yeah, hard to be effective
- 41:19with you. All right, now we at 9:00, we
- 41:21about to get to half of the two deepest injured in.
- 41:24Some way, shape or form? Hold on.
- 41:26Wait a SEC. Galloway's 10, Gallows 10.
- 41:29Yeah. Did you mention people's?
- 41:32I didn't mention people's. People, Holloway's nicked.
- 41:35I think he's still out there doing things though.
- 41:37Yeah, it is crazy, man. It is crazy to injured but but
- 41:41it's football, you know, It's like you can never.
- 41:45Know who's going to be injured and how to prepare for it.
- 41:47But it sucks that it always happens in Virginia Tech.
- 41:52It sucks, man. And it's only the 4th.
- 41:55Like we're going to the fourth game of the season and we're
- 41:58talking about them and we don't know.
- 41:59We don't know what, where these people are going to make.
- 42:02Curtis talked. I don't know if it was the
- 42:05first, if it was the first show of the season, or maybe the
- 42:08second when Curtis talked about that going.
- 42:11Maybe it was a rule to implement and talking about the the injury
- 42:16report. Yeah, we talked about if it
- 42:19would, if it would, you know affect like people knowing the
- 42:21NIL stuff, we yes, tell us who hurt.
- 42:25So we can just go here to prepare.
- 42:27Let me know before the game who's going to play and who
- 42:29ain't like these depth charts that don't really tell you the.
- 42:32Story No no. Don't even release one.
- 42:35Don't even Where's Pete B's tweet about that?
- 42:37Where's Pete B's tweet about put?
- 42:39Pull that shit out of it. Pete B, My boy Pete B has been
- 42:42fighting more than me on Twitter like.
- 42:44He has been fighting and he's. Been I was Pete B.
- 42:50You are a PR nightmare, Sir. When you're worse than talent,
- 42:54you it's bad. Well, the one that got me from
- 42:57Pete. I love Pete.
- 42:59We chat. When when Pete said this is the
- 43:01worst loss he'd ever saw, I literally went Dude, where were
- 43:05you at 98 Temple. That is the worst loss in
- 43:08program history. OK, you got to collapse over
- 43:16here. All right, pull it down real
- 43:17quick. I'm going to address this.
- 43:18Then don't put anything out. Don't put it out.
- 43:22You got to put that doubt. Leave us.
- 43:25In the dark. That's definitely so much.
- 43:33Really, I don't know what else. Because we talked about, you
- 43:35know, not taking away their Russian attack, they went for
- 43:37256 on us. But again, I think we're slowly
- 43:41getting to the point where this section gets smaller and smaller
- 43:43every week because you do start seeing things.
- 43:48The only thing I hope is that within the next few games we
- 43:52start having. Positives here, right?
- 43:55Yeah. Well, if we can learn to run the
- 43:57football more effectively and if we can learn to stop the rush
- 44:02more effectively, then these two middle sections will get
- 44:07smaller, right? I mean because most of these
- 44:11middle sections are either stuff that we're struggling with
- 44:17mightily, which is those two things or things like injuries,
- 44:21which some we can control, some we you know we try to mitigate
- 44:26but we may not be able to understand the, the, the full
- 44:29scope of what the ask is until we get into the the thick of it,
- 44:32right. So that's that's we're talking
- 44:34about the run game. So it's going to be interesting
- 44:38to see how we pivot this week and what, what sort of
- 44:42adjustments we make, especially if the guys at safety are not
- 44:46able to go this week. That's gonna be a real issue,
- 44:48Sheldon. Anything else you want to add
- 44:50here? You have been very quiet in this
- 44:52section, so I'm going to give you the floor for a couple
- 44:54minutes here. Yeah.
- 44:55You know, The thing is, I think for me it's hard to really judge
- 44:59the efficacy of our defensive backs because they just haven't
- 45:02been tested. I was looking at this number
- 45:04before we got on because I wanted to confirm Tech has the
- 45:0710th highest opponent rushing rate in the country.
- 45:11So basically the game plan for offenses against tech is just
- 45:13run or run and we kind of seen that throughout the course this
- 45:16season. I mean, I don't know if I could
- 45:18explain this right away if someone who knows more about the
- 45:19exit and nose could like you know, articulate this better.
- 45:22But when you watch these linebackers and safeties, they
- 45:24just, they aren't looking at where the ball is or where it's
- 45:27going to be. And Brian mentioned talk about
- 45:30the bad angles. I don't think they're just
- 45:32they're just not anticipating right and it's an experience
- 45:35problem. It's, I think it's also partly,
- 45:38you know, there's some physicality too, like obviously
- 45:40the linebackers have sometimes run themselves out of position.
- 45:44But even when the arm position, I think they're just getting, I
- 45:46mean they're getting beat up physically now maybe that's, you
- 45:49know, a strength problem. They need a couple of years in
- 45:51the weight room. But you've got a lot of, you
- 45:53know, tall linking, athletic guys out there, linebacker,
- 45:56bunch of, you know, converted safeties and not a lot of guys
- 45:59that are, you know, big and strong like a prototypical Brent
- 46:01pie Mike linebacker. So it's just a combination of
- 46:05poor assignments, you know, not having the right, the right
- 46:08athletes out there and just using an experience.
- 46:11So lots of lots of things to correct for sure.
- 46:15All righty. Well, we hope we can get into
- 46:16that. Now, here's we got the laundry
- 46:19list of things going on because now we're going to go what to do
- 46:21better moving forward. And that's actually longer than
- 46:24anything we've discussed tonight.
- 46:25Now I'm going to take the first one here.
- 46:27We already mentioned it once and I'm going to go to a little
- 46:30something that I read, didn't like and then I listened to
- 46:34something We're going to we need to stick with countering drones.
- 46:37I think everybody here agrees. I think most of hokey notion
- 46:40agrees. But if you listened, not
- 46:43listened. If you read some transcripts
- 46:45from people putting things on Twitter Saturday night and
- 46:48Sunday morning about the Brent Pry practice conference, you
- 46:52probably were under the impression that Brent Bry said
- 46:56we needed Grant Wells back. I saw that and I was like,
- 47:01that's an unusual statement, especially the way Kyron played.
- 47:05Kyron played pretty well to be a first time starter on the road
- 47:09against the top 25 defense. So I decided to listen to the
- 47:12full interview and things were taken completely out of context.
- 47:16First of all, did he have some critiques of Conor?
- 47:19Yes, he did. He did, absolutely.
- 47:21But that was way at the front of the interview.
- 47:24That minute two or three, the comments about Grant Wells were
- 47:29as follows. And this is what people left out
- 47:32they he said, and this was all the quotes on Twitter.
- 47:35We need Grant Wells back. How many people did y'all see
- 47:40lose their ever loving minds when they saw that?
- 47:43Because what they did is they put the critiques of Cairo and
- 47:46then they layered it on top of that.
- 47:49Actually, this is what Coach Price said.
- 47:52Regardless of our quarterback situation, we need Grant back
- 47:56and I absolutely agree with that because right now Pop Watson is
- 47:595 foot 11185 pounds. He is a small, small, true
- 48:05freshman quarterback. I hear that and I'm saying Brent
- 48:09Pride's mind is regardless what happens at the quarterback room,
- 48:13I need 2 quarterbacks that can play.
- 48:15Because if we are going to run Kyron drones 20 * a game, he's
- 48:20probably going to get popped once.
- 48:22And we're going to need someone that is as much as if you want
- 48:25to bust Wells all you want busing.
- 48:29But he could go out there and manage a game for a couple
- 48:32series that that that irritated me.
- 48:35Because as soon as I listen to it, I send it to all three of
- 48:37these gentleman, I'm like, listen, make sure I'm not losing
- 48:39my damn mind. Because that irritated me.
- 48:41And a lot of people were up in arms losing their damn mind
- 48:44saying fire him now. It's like he didn't say that
- 48:46though listen to the interview. So for everybody listening
- 48:50tonight, next week, don't look at Twitter, go to hokey athletic
- 48:55page, pull up the interview. Usually it's about 7 to 10
- 48:58minutes. Go on your air pods and listen
- 49:00to it. Then you actually hear his words
- 49:02verbatim versus someone chopping and screwing things and
- 49:06definitely looking for clicks. Don't have the floor now.
- 49:11Curtis Curtis fired up. That fires me up because you can
- 49:17easily twist something and get people upset and get people
- 49:20angry. We were already on tilt come
- 49:22Saturday night after the loss. Put that shit out there like
- 49:26that the way it was worded. He thinks, tire and stuff.
- 49:29No, he doesn't. And y'all.
- 49:32I will say he did say that threw me.
- 49:35I ain't going to say it threw me off because I mean it's.
- 49:38I understand the comment because I play football and I play
- 49:40sports and it sounds like something I tell my son.
- 49:43He said he was inconsistent. We got to get better at being
- 49:46consistent. When you have a first time
- 49:49starter, I just feel. And again, Brent, Brent Pride is
- 49:53very, very candid and high. He speaks.
- 49:55Which is great when you're interviewing him and when he's
- 49:59out talking and things like that.
- 50:00I think he has to do a little bit different job or find a
- 50:04little bit different way to handle some of the stuff.
- 50:06Because when you have like a first time starter like Kyra
- 50:09Drones, I don't feel that he's got that full embrace of the
- 50:13team and of the coaching staff and even of the fans for him to
- 50:18go and perform yet. You know, I'd like to see Brent
- 50:21take him under his wing a little bit and.
- 50:23And and and say, hey, we this kid, we won't work with him.
- 50:27We're going and he said a little bit of this, but you know
- 50:30leading up into the game it was never, you know, hey, Kyron's
- 50:33our guy. We going, we going go out there
- 50:36with him and whatever he's got, we got full confidence that he's
- 50:40going to go get it done. All we heard was well, it may be
- 50:42Grant Wells like we haven't got that full endorsement of Kyron,
- 50:47drones to go and be the starter and lead the team.
- 50:51I think he came in and did a great job.
- 50:53For what it was, you know. But I would just like for him
- 50:58just to get a little bit more endorsement.
- 51:00That's it. And now I'm on this.
- 51:02Let me since Curtis wants to have a little rant, can I have a
- 51:04little rant for a minute? Because somebody did on Twitter
- 51:07and I got to go. I got to talk about it a little
- 51:09bit. So somebody waits till Monday
- 51:13morning again. Everybody watching this.
- 51:16I just told y'all how to operate.
- 51:18Yeah, we record on Tuesdays today.
- 51:20We doing it on Monday. This is what we do for fun.
- 51:24We are not getting paid by the school.
- 51:26These guys that are on here are my brothers.
- 51:28This is what we do. We talk all the time about
- 51:30Virginia Tech athletics. We talk all the time about
- 51:33football in general. We watch a lot of sports.
- 51:37But what somebody thought would be cool to do was to go on
- 51:40Twitter and tag Boundary Quantum podcast and tag Talibans and say
- 51:45this guy said the staff is racist and if y'all are going to
- 51:50back him. I'm never listening to your show
- 51:52again. That's fucking bullshit.
- 51:55And if you never want to listen to me again, fucking don't
- 51:58listen. But if you're going to record
- 52:00something I say, or you're going to quote something I say, please
- 52:04make sure you dig and you find out exactly what I said.
- 52:07My comments were never that the staff was racist and that they
- 52:11didn't like black people. My comments were there are
- 52:14politics in football. I would like to know who is
- 52:17helping with the decision making.
- 52:19That's that's where that comment came from.
- 52:21Then I caveat of that by saying I live in Alabama.
- 52:25The people here are very blatant when they are racist.
- 52:29That's what I said. I said the fans here, if they
- 52:33don't want a quarterback, they're going to tell me exactly
- 52:35why they don't want him. That's what I said.
- 52:38Never said that Brett Pride's been on this show.
- 52:41And if I thought he was racist, I wouldn't have.
- 52:42I don't got to have a conversation with him.
- 52:44He don't have to have a conversation with me.
- 52:46But for somebody to go and try to cherry pick a comment and try
- 52:50to think that they're going to do anything to what we got going
- 52:52on here, let me tell you what you can do.
- 52:54I ain't going to even go there. I'm just going to tell you to
- 52:57have a nice day because it's a new week.
- 52:59That's. All I got to say, but in all
- 53:02seriousness, what? What?
- 53:05What? That Twitter user 123, whatever
- 53:07his name is. What you thought was saying or
- 53:10what you tried to make a big thing that would say it, A lot
- 53:14of people listen to us and that's why everybody jumped on
- 53:17your ass and that's why you had to back off of Twitter.
- 53:20Sometimes you just got to log out.
- 53:21Because if you waited till Monday morning, that was near
- 53:23and dear, in your heart you didn't listen good enough.
- 53:26You just took that and you didn't go to church.
- 53:28Go to church, man. Pray about that stuff.
- 53:30All right, Siegel. Sheldon, this is this is clearly
- 53:32we're just opening it up. Feelings Hour.
- 53:35We're we're what to do better moving forward.
- 53:38We've talked about a lot of it. Well, I mean, I'm just going to
- 53:42say this, I mean we talk about it all the time.
- 53:43And I, I know I said it in reply to this tweet, but I mean we're
- 53:47we're, we're open. We're in open forum here, right?
- 53:49Like we don't really pull punches.
- 53:52We we we want the thoughts and the ideas to be out there so and
- 54:00we want fans to interact with that.
- 54:02But what we want fans to do is interact with that in a way that
- 54:06is positive right in a in a way that generates the discussion,
- 54:09pushes the discussion forward, not shuts things down.
- 54:13When you start cherry picking things like that and twisting
- 54:15someone's words, you're not only alienating the people that enjoy
- 54:21what we're doing, but you're making it so other people don't
- 54:26want to engage and have those open discussions and feel like
- 54:29they can say stuff without, you know, somebody running and
- 54:33running it to Twitter and and making a big deal about it.
- 54:35So just come here and have fun. That's that's what this is
- 54:40about. Come in, have fun.
- 54:43Nobody was trying to ruin anyone's career or like.
- 54:46I'm open. I'm open, but what we doing
- 54:48here? Anybody who has anything to say
- 54:50to me, you can ask just about anybody that follows me on
- 54:53Twitter. I don't have a lot of followers.
- 54:55I got a couple of them. But anybody who engages with me
- 54:58on Twitter, man and my my DM's are open.
- 55:00I got plenty of people's number and Blacksburg treats me good.
- 55:04When I go to Blacksburg, man, I got a lot of friends there.
- 55:07I wouldn't travel 7 hours to a place where I thought people
- 55:09were racist and they didn't want me.
- 55:11So I'm just going to put that out every time I go to
- 55:13Blacksburg and every time I've been to Blacksburg over the past
- 55:17decade has been. A movie for me.
- 55:20So I just wanted to get my feelings out and I just wanted
- 55:23to address that because I'm not going to, I'm not going to, I'm
- 55:26not going to address stupidity too much.
- 55:28You know what I'm saying? Like I I'm going to say a little
- 55:30bit just so you can get your feelings out.
- 55:33But just like we had a comment section, if you hear me saying
- 55:36something that you don't agree with, please engage and tell me,
- 55:39Tally. I think that was dumb and we'll
- 55:41have a dialogue about it. So that's what we want here.
- 55:45That's why Curtis and Brian have did a great job setting up.
- 55:49What boundary corner is that? We do have those discussions,
- 55:52but we're not. I'm not going to take something
- 55:55that anybody in our audience says and twist it around to make
- 55:59it mean what I want it to be. That's just not what I'm going
- 56:01to do. I'm going to give you your
- 56:03opportunity to explain it. And then the person said, well,
- 56:06after watching the game, I do agree with you, drone should be
- 56:09the starter. But what are we arguing about?
- 56:11What are we arguing? About.
- 56:14But you know what else we got to do better moving forward?
- 56:17We talked about the old line switch.
- 56:18Got to do it. Got to start trying it.
- 56:21Sheldon. He laid it out here a little
- 56:23while ago. We were one of the worst teams
- 56:26with the explosive run plays. It has to stop.
- 56:29I don't know if that means stacked boxes.
- 56:33I'm not a technical expert. That's why we got Brian and
- 56:35Tally. Sheldon finds the dad.
- 56:37I just. Talked you got Tally.
- 56:43You played you. You played at a level I never
- 56:45did and a lot of people. Pull everybody out.
- 56:48Put a whole new line in. I don't know what.
- 56:51You did. There's two pieces.
- 56:53We haven't touched and Sheldon could probably find the stats on
- 56:56it right now. Y'all, we haven't forced a
- 56:58turnover since ODU. We have turned the ball over
- 57:02four times since ODU. Gotta win the turnover battle.
- 57:05We're. Losing that battle and in both
- 57:08games, both games we lost. Significant momentum switches
- 57:15when we had the turnovers. That has got to stop now.
- 57:19I know, I know the meshes and things like that are going to
- 57:23get better. I know if you keeping drones
- 57:26there he's going to get more time with two to more count
- 57:28Malachi, but we have not had a chance to pick or fumble or
- 57:35force a fumble since the ODU game.
- 57:39And it's not good because we're going in that trend where we
- 57:41were last year where we were one of the worst tools that for some
- 57:44turnovers we can't live and die like that with the way the
- 57:48offense is right now coming along.
- 57:51Yeah, I mean we, we talked about earlier razor thin margin,
- 57:54right. So it's like that with the
- 57:56injuries. It's also like that with the
- 57:58turnover battle. We are at such a razor thin
- 58:01margin where we can't make those type of mistakes that give teams
- 58:04extra possessions, that give teams short fields.
- 58:09So we've got to win the turnover battle every week, whether
- 58:11that's Marshall, whether that's ODU, whether that's Purdue,
- 58:16Rutgers, we got pit in a couple weeks.
- 58:19We cannot lose the turnover battle with the depth issues
- 58:24that we have with the injuries that we have right now.
- 58:26That's just, that's just the long and short of it.
- 58:28So anybody that's you got to be able to protect football.
- 58:30Man, you got a college a go ahead show.
- 58:32Yeah, I'm. Just going to say real quickly
- 58:34that it makes sense why they're not.
- 58:36Getting interceptions because as I said, nobody's starting the
- 58:38ball against tech. So you're essentially relying
- 58:40on, you know, 4 stumbles, which is kind of hard to do.
- 58:43But to me, the collusion from that should be just play better,
- 58:47play better run defense. I mean, because if you if you
- 58:49play better run defense, you force them to throw the ball
- 58:51more and to throw the ball more than.
- 58:53That's where chances were fixed. I mean, to me, it's really that
- 58:54simple. Just play better on the run.
- 58:58What defense is trying to do is is shut down the run game and
- 59:02make them test you down the feet, right?
- 59:04But like, that's generally the way that you try to.
- 59:07I mean that that that's the approach that most people have
- 59:09is that we can stop the run, force them to be 1 dimensional,
- 59:12make them throw the ball down the field.
- 59:14We have a better chance of turnovers and things can go our
- 59:18way. You know, we'll live and die
- 59:19with the beat ball here or there, but we might get some
- 59:22turnovers. That's going to help us if you
- 59:24can't get off the field because they're rushing the ball on you
- 59:27and if you're giving up long run plays consistently, you're going
- 59:30to have very limited opportunities, like Shelton
- 59:32said, to get turnovers. I mean forcing a phone call
- 59:35outside of a like a strip sack is difficult like that.
- 59:39They don't happen very often so. So they do not.
- 59:44All right. Last.
- 59:46Yep. Thanks.
- 59:47It's a good call, Sheldon, and that's why he's here.
- 59:50Last piece I got before we turn it over, We got to finish.
- 59:55We have to finish our drives. We cannot afford field goals.
- 1:00:00We have to finish stops. When we get a team in 3rd and
- 1:00:04more than five, they cannot get first down.
- 1:00:07So we've seen to meet and and maybe the stats aren't on this
- 1:00:11but as far as it goes from the eye test, it feels like third
- 1:00:13and four. It's like hold your breath like
- 1:00:16and they they're probably going to get this.
- 1:00:19And then the last piece we have to finish in the fourth quarter,
- 1:00:21it's two games now. We did not finish the 4th.
- 1:00:25That was the identity of this team last year.
- 1:00:29It slowly changed. Can do the last things of the
- 1:00:33game to me. We can't afford that this year.
- 1:00:36It needs to get righted quicker but we need to finish.
- 1:00:41I agree. I think that one thing we
- 1:00:44skipped over that I just want to maybe maybe I just was in my
- 1:00:47feelings and and Mr. saying it. But we talked probably talked
- 1:00:50about the the slow starts, mentioned the slow starts and
- 1:00:54things like that. Like we got to get off to a fast
- 1:00:57start. In some of these games, you know
- 1:00:59what I'm saying? We got to punch somebody in the
- 1:01:00mouth first because in any sport, when you get punched in
- 1:01:04the mouth, like everybody's got to plan until that happens, you
- 1:01:07know, And I feel like we were fighting, fighting the losing
- 1:01:11battle from the beginning of that game because we went out
- 1:01:13and fumbled the first drive and they go and score.
- 1:01:16So we got to go out and we got to we ought to create some
- 1:01:19things like that first we got to start getting up to a little bit
- 1:01:21better start and I think that you know of course that'll help
- 1:01:25us but. All the things that we're
- 1:01:27talking about will help us do that.
- 1:01:29Got to get off the field on 3rd downs.
- 1:01:31We got to stop turning the ball over.
- 1:01:33All of these things that we've talked about for the last what
- 1:01:37hour and and two minutes here. I know if we can cut some of
- 1:01:41that down, it's definitely gives us a better shot to win the
- 1:01:43game. Especially when you're paying
- 1:01:45people like Marshall. You know, not, no disrespect to
- 1:01:49Marshall, but like I expect a certain game from a Florida
- 1:01:53State or Clemson or even pit. But when you're playing people
- 1:01:57like Purdue or Rutgers, like we got, we got to find a way not to
- 1:02:02give them extra possessions and things like that.
- 1:02:05Or or give them that hope early on.
- 1:02:07Like just think about last year. The reason that you know we were
- 1:02:11able to jump down on BC earlier was because we we we jumped on
- 1:02:14them early we we killed their will early in that game with
- 1:02:18some defensive plays and some timely offense that.
- 1:02:23You know, they really didn't have a whole lot of pulse.
- 1:02:25They had to abandon what their game plan was and do something
- 1:02:28different. You know what that?
- 1:02:30Enabled us to tee off on that poor ass offensive line.
- 1:02:34So if we can finally do something like that, that that
- 1:02:38would at least help us be able to stay with our game plan,
- 1:02:42stick to what we do well and put some pressure on them to have to
- 1:02:48make a play instead of us having to make a play.
- 1:02:51I'm going to go to this right quick so we can we can move on.
- 1:02:54But Brian, you said you brought up BC last year.
- 1:02:58You know, I didn't have a pulse because that quarterback was
- 1:03:02who? Jacobic.
- 1:03:05Jacobic. Please, God, let him roll in
- 1:03:08there when Pitt comes into town next week.
- 1:03:10I'm not saying we're going to win, but don't change.
- 1:03:13Just let him go, please. Let him run in and have be the
- 1:03:16quarterback. It's horrible.
- 1:03:18He is horrible, man. All right, I'm gonna pitch this
- 1:03:22real quick and try to do this in as few words as possible.
- 1:03:25That sometimes can get difficult for us through the first three
- 1:03:29games. Shelton What's the team's
- 1:03:31identity? What's the team's identity?
- 1:03:34I mean, well, I mean, it's changed a lot.
- 1:03:38Like ODU, it was, you know, we're going to run the ball in
- 1:03:40first down no matter what. And it's like, OK, we're going
- 1:03:42to start passing ball because if you have to run game against
- 1:03:44Purdue and against Rutgers, obviously got a new quarterback,
- 1:03:48so you're running. A lot more, you know, RPO stuff,
- 1:03:51kind of getting the quarterback involved in the run game.
- 1:03:54Honestly, I don't know. It's just it's hard for me to
- 1:03:56judge because the personnel keeps changing and there's just
- 1:04:00nothing that's really sticking. So I would say obviously they
- 1:04:03want to, you know, use the quarterback in the run game.
- 1:04:05That's that's your office of identity.
- 1:04:07Defensively, I just, I think they've got no idea what's going
- 1:04:09on and I don't know, I couldn't tell you.
- 1:04:12So it's just it's kind of a it's kind of a mess right now.
- 1:04:18I think right now we auditioning for NCAA 2024.
- 1:04:22Is that when the game come out next year?
- 1:04:25Yeah, I think that's what we auditioning for.
- 1:04:27You know, we're just going to pick plays and until it until
- 1:04:30see what works and go from there.
- 1:04:32Hell, I don't know. I'm like Sheldon, man, it's
- 1:04:35changed every week. But I'm going to say this and I
- 1:04:38know you want me to keep it short, so I'm going to keep it
- 1:04:40short. I could see what the offense is
- 1:04:45supposed to look like in the Rutgers game.
- 1:04:48From what I've heard, from what they've been telling us and from
- 1:04:51what I've seen in the Rutgers game, I can see the style of
- 1:04:55offense that they want to run. I'm kind of with Tally here.
- 1:05:02I finally saw an identity on offense this week with drones.
- 1:05:06As the quarterback, I felt like with Wells you could see the
- 1:05:12passing schemes. What they were capable of,
- 1:05:15especially when you had Jennings in there and Lane in there, you
- 1:05:19can see what the what, what the capability is.
- 1:05:22But in terms of the full scope of what the offense is about,
- 1:05:26you saw that with drones in the game.
- 1:05:29Defensively, I feel like we are scrambling a little bit and I
- 1:05:33think most of that is because of the injuries and safety.
- 1:05:36I think we're still very inexperienced at linebacker and
- 1:05:39it's showing. And I think we're still a little
- 1:05:41undersized on the defensive line and it's showing.
- 1:05:45I think quarterback is the only position that I really feel has
- 1:05:49an identity right now. I feel like they are playing
- 1:05:53well. They're they're they're locking
- 1:05:55guys up pretty well. When when those situations
- 1:05:58arise, you know, we saw them throw a decent amount in the
- 1:06:03Purdue game. They they they they threw the
- 1:06:05ball around a little bit. They ran a lot, but they threw
- 1:06:07as well. We didn't see a ton of throwing
- 1:06:09in ODU. We didn't see a ton of throwing
- 1:06:11at Rutgers, but when they did throw, they weren't effective.
- 1:06:15Whether that's on the secondary or not, but right now
- 1:06:20statistically at least they're pretty good secondary and that's
- 1:06:25really the only thing. And that's really the only thing
- 1:06:27I feel like we're leaning on right now from a defense
- 1:06:29perspective statistically until we see more passing.
- 1:06:33And I think that's where the run game has to get fitted.
- 1:06:35And I think what my identity is, Brent Pride knows what he wants
- 1:06:38to do on defense. But right now the pieces aren't
- 1:06:41there, or the pieces are too young and they're making
- 1:06:43significant errors, especially in the linebacking core and even
- 1:06:47more so in the safety core. Offensively, I love what Y'all
- 1:06:51said. I didn't really know.
- 1:06:53It's like we were this first week, we were this the second
- 1:06:55weekend, were this the third week.
- 1:06:57But it goes back to what y'all two just said, How that looked
- 1:07:01looked like reminiscence of Penn State about five years ago.
- 1:07:05It looked like Joe Moorehead's offense that I've seen at
- 1:07:07Oregon, like I've seen at Mississippi State.
- 1:07:11And that's how you can go, because I look at our stats
- 1:07:14here. We have 368 total yards against
- 1:07:17ODU368. That was a full team, right?
- 1:07:21Jennings played, Lane played. Nobody was banged up to and
- 1:07:24Thomas last week down your two best receivers, brand new
- 1:07:28quarterback. We put out 339 or 319.
- 1:07:35Excuse me, I looked at the math room.
- 1:07:37That's 50 yards difference. And you're missing a hell of a
- 1:07:39lot of production there. Hell of a lot of production.
- 1:07:42All right, we are over an hour. So we are going to take a quick
- 1:07:45pause from our digital partners and Main Street Pharmacy.
- 1:07:49I can probably save you a lot of money and I can take a lot
- 1:07:52better care of you. That's pretty much it.
- 1:07:54My name is Jeremy Counts and I'm a pharmacist.
- 1:07:57I want to operate Main Street Pharmacy here in downtown
- 1:07:59Blacksburg. My brother's A pharmacist.
- 1:08:01I'm a pharmacist. My uncle's A pharmacist.
- 1:08:03My dad's a pharmacist. I remember he would give me
- 1:08:05M&M's to count in little pill counters.
- 1:08:08This is something I've always done, and I'm just lucky that
- 1:08:11what I know so well is something that I can do and feel good
- 1:08:14about it and get back to people. Pharmacies are your frontline
- 1:08:17defense. Pharmacy's job is to make sure
- 1:08:19you're getting optimal care for the lowest price possible.
- 1:08:22Also, we take the pressure off of emergency rooms.
- 1:08:25I'll tell people immediately when they need to go to the
- 1:08:27doctor, or I'll tell them if they just need a cream over the
- 1:08:29counter. If there's something that isn't
- 1:08:31commercially available, if it's something that's not available
- 1:08:34in a certain strength or a certain form or anything like
- 1:08:37that, we'll make it tailor made medications.
- 1:08:39Some of those options save people a lot of money.
- 1:08:41What motivates me? I get to take care of people in
- 1:08:43Limit Blacksburg, I thought. Neat.
- 1:08:48As we take a quick break, we'd like to tell you about getting
- 1:08:50your free website report from our digital partner, Grassroots
- 1:08:53Digital Marketing Studio. They'll tell you how your
- 1:08:55website ranks on Google onsite, SEO and social media.
- 1:08:59No commitment to buy anything. You can get your free report by
- 1:09:02visiting grassroots digitalstudio.com/free Dash
- 1:09:06website Dash Report. Now back to the episode.
- 1:09:10And we are back and we've lost Shelton.
- 1:09:13He shall return in a moment. Now we are going to get into
- 1:09:16Know the Enemy and we're going to take a look at Marshall and
- 1:09:19we're going to start, as always, on the offensive side of the
- 1:09:21ball. I'm going to give the floor to
- 1:09:24Brian Sigla as he discusses the scheme and some things we need
- 1:09:27to be looking for. Yeah guys, we're looking at the
- 1:09:31the Clint trick it it's it's another Smash Mouth spread RPO.
- 1:09:35We got a it's a run first scheme.
- 1:09:38Shocking to say, you know we're going to have to stop the run
- 1:09:40again this week. They like to go empty a lot with
- 1:09:44frequency. They'll split Rasheena Lee, who
- 1:09:47we'll talk about here in a second out wide.
- 1:09:49They'll run some draws out of that.
- 1:09:51They'll also swing it out there on screens and and swing passes
- 1:09:56and they're they're really heavy on that.
- 1:09:57But they will take the occasional deep shot in there as
- 1:10:00well. But it's supposed to a lot of
- 1:10:01the short stuff. And a heavy dose of the rushing
- 1:10:04attack. And since we're already here,
- 1:10:10I'll go ahead and talk a little bit about Rasheen Ali.
- 1:10:13He's there running back literally to me, the only player
- 1:10:18that scares me on this this offense.
- 1:10:23And it's not just because we have a a really struggle bus.
- 1:10:29Run a rush defense Right now he's pretty dangerous.
- 1:10:32He's he kind of reminds me of a of a poor man's.
- 1:10:37Is he? Havana, Canada.
- 1:10:39He gets to the second. And third level, he's pretty
- 1:10:42dangerous. If we can keep him contained in
- 1:10:44the backfield, I'll feel okay about it.
- 1:10:47Him getting to the second and third level, that's where he
- 1:10:49does a whole lot of damage. He can be a a big play threat
- 1:10:52but he is very boom or bust. You know, he's not that plotting
- 1:10:56running back that's going to get you a consistent, you know, 4 to
- 1:11:008 yards as he's moving through the the line.
- 1:11:04He's either going to kind of go for one or two or it's going to
- 1:11:06be one of those 15 or 20 or even bigger games on the running
- 1:11:10game. So definitely an explosive
- 1:11:13running back that can make a big place.
- 1:11:15So we got to stop him. If we do, I'll feel a little bit
- 1:11:19better. Go ahead.
- 1:11:22Yeah, I was just going to say he was.
- 1:11:24He had a big year in 2021, went for about 1400 yards, 23
- 1:11:28touchdowns last year. Not that great of a year.
- 1:11:33I think he was injured. No, he was injured.
- 1:11:35The only one for about two, 273 last year, one touchdown.
- 1:11:40So had some injury problems there.
- 1:11:42But this year, you know he's already gone for 222 yards, 5
- 1:11:46touchdowns on 36 carries. Again, they are using them out
- 1:11:50of the back fill a little bit, about 5 catches, 47 yards.
- 1:11:53There are no touchdowns catching the ball.
- 1:11:55But pretty like you said, Brian hit nail on my head with him.
- 1:12:00Reminds you a lot of that name that we're not going to say like
- 1:12:04Walmart, like we don't want to talk.
- 1:12:06We don't say that name on this vodka.
- 1:12:08Curtis will get some flashbacks. Will feel like he's a bomb again
- 1:12:12or. Something yeah, it's crazy, but
- 1:12:15he's, he's, he's, he's one of the players on their team that.
- 1:12:18Kind of like Brian says, is a little bit scared.
- 1:12:21So we're going to have our hands full, we're going to have our
- 1:12:23hands full and I hope that our defensive staff are preparing
- 1:12:28for seeing him. All right.
- 1:12:31Shown any any deeper steps on Rasheena Lee?
- 1:12:36He has a 71% breakaway percentage, which I believe is
- 1:12:42it runs the 15 more yards. And that is a third among all
- 1:12:46running backs in the entire group of five.
- 1:12:48So, like, like Brian was saying, he's a big time exposed to play
- 1:12:51guy. All right, well, let's hope the
- 1:12:54defense can figure something out this week as they prep for him.
- 1:12:58Because if the past defense is what it is, they're going to
- 1:13:03have to stop #5. Caleb McMillan.
- 1:13:10Caleb is a six foot three £250 wide receiver.
- 1:13:14He was the almost the 25th 100 prospect in the class of 2018
- 1:13:20out of Orlando, FL and Edgewater High School was rated A2 star
- 1:13:24down there and really hadn't been much of A contributor up
- 1:13:27until this season. Only 198 yards last year with
- 1:13:32one touchdown. This year, and especially last
- 1:13:35week against ECU, big game, 85 yards, including a 75 yard
- 1:13:40touchdown. Brian.
- 1:13:43Was that 75 yard touchdown a make, a miss or was he down the
- 1:13:47field? Yeah, he was down the field.
- 1:13:52He's a guy that can beat you with the.
- 1:13:55He's a guy that he's their primary deep threat here, so
- 1:13:58he's going to be a guy that can beat you deep.
- 1:14:01But they will use him on those kind of swings and screens as
- 1:14:03well. So he's he does a little bit of
- 1:14:05both, but that big one kind of came off a deep ball.
- 1:14:08They will occasionally take a shot with him, but he's a guy
- 1:14:12that can kind of do a little bit of everything.
- 1:14:14But he's primarily going to be a guy that we're going to be
- 1:14:17concerned about if he's going deep.
- 1:14:21All righty. Well, let's hope we can stop him
- 1:14:24in that one. Tally.
- 1:14:27Who do you got up next? Yeah, so we got Kate Conley up
- 1:14:31next. He's there tight in.
- 1:14:33He was pretty interesting prospect, I guess, because you
- 1:14:37don't show any offers out of high school.
- 1:14:40Didn't even have a rating. Went to Central Michigan.
- 1:14:43Transferred from Central Michigan to Marshall while he
- 1:14:47was at Central Michigan in 2022. It's like he had 11 receptions
- 1:14:51for about 168 yards. Also not.
- 1:14:55Used a whole bunch in the passing game there, but this
- 1:14:59year he's already got 9 catches for 114 yards, so it looks like
- 1:15:03they are using him a little bit more there at at Marshall than
- 1:15:07he was. I know he's more of a blocking
- 1:15:08tight end, but seems to be a intricate part of their offense.
- 1:15:14Which you got on him, Brian? Yeah, I mean he's, I'd call him
- 1:15:18a balance tight end. He's definitely better at
- 1:15:22blocking than than being used in the passing game, but he's he's
- 1:15:24a fishing in the passing game. So I mean that's a lot of times
- 1:15:27that's what you want out of a tight end.
- 1:15:29Guys that can move the stick, kind of a change of pace in the
- 1:15:31passing game. But he blocks, he blocks really
- 1:15:34good for a tight end, blocks a good leverage, so shows
- 1:15:37surprising power for his size. So overall, just a guy that can
- 1:15:41kind of get in there and rough things up a little bit in the
- 1:15:44run game, but still kind of move the sticks for them in the
- 1:15:46passing game, showing anything on him as far as grades go,
- 1:15:51Anything unique, different? Not too much, pretty much a run
- 1:15:55in the mill tied in. They do target him a relatively
- 1:15:59solid amount, especially considering they've only played
- 1:16:01two games so far. They got 10 targets, but he
- 1:16:04averages almost 13 yards to catch, which from Marshalls is
- 1:16:07pretty good. So also, big time is supposed to
- 1:16:10play Guy. Alrighty, let's flip over.
- 1:16:13Let's take a look at the offensive line because they've
- 1:16:15got a guy, Kelly, much like the guy you were looking for.
- 1:16:20I could not find anything recruiting wide on Ethan
- 1:16:23Driscoll. Who is there?
- 1:16:25Left tackle #52, six foot nine £329 or red shirt senior.
- 1:16:31We crossed. Yeah, yeah, Big Boy.
- 1:16:33Holy Cross High School in Louisville, KY, where he played
- 1:16:36detackle in high school. Also played basketball and if
- 1:16:40you search his name up a lot of stuff is coming up.
- 1:16:43He is getting NFL looks. He was a preseason all Sunbelt
- 1:16:47second team by Phil Steele at Athlon with the Sunbelt
- 1:16:51Conference coaches. So Brian, is he good enough to
- 1:16:57potentially make it to the next level?
- 1:17:02I mean, he's got the right body. I mean, I think from a run game
- 1:17:05perspective, he's very good. But I'd say overall he's a very
- 1:17:09balanced left tackle, shows good footwork and strengthen the run
- 1:17:13game. You know, pass pro isn't
- 1:17:18exceptional but above average. So I mean just overall he's,
- 1:17:24he's definitely a guy that you know we could really use on our
- 1:17:27side of the ball at this point when we look at the.
- 1:17:33The tackles there? We probably could use you right
- 1:17:36now. I mean it'd be nice to have an
- 1:17:40NFL prospect on our offensive line right now for being honest
- 1:17:43just you know cuz I don't right now at least you know I know
- 1:17:46it's still early with some of the young guys but we we do not
- 1:17:48have an NFL prospect on our offensive line right now so they
- 1:17:53got one. Like I said, he's pretty solid
- 1:17:55overall and. I know Sheldon's got a couple
- 1:17:58other guys. He wants to talk a little bit
- 1:18:00about the grades and and where they kind of rank in the process
- 1:18:02there as well. Sure.
- 1:18:04So you've got Dalton Tucker who's played right guard and
- 1:18:07right tackle. He is a six year senior, highest
- 1:18:10credit offensive lineman for Marshall.
- 1:18:13On the flip side, Ultric Barlow is their left guard.
- 1:18:15He has been the lowest credit guy.
- 1:18:16He's a transfer from TCUA. Lot of experience with Trent
- 1:18:20Holler at center, 5th year senior.
- 1:18:23Very good in past blocking. One stat that I got so between
- 1:18:27Holler and Logan Osborne, who's their right guard, they've
- 1:18:30combined for 140 pass protection snaps and they have not allowed
- 1:18:34a single pressure. So Marshall has a team ranks top
- 1:18:38in the country through two games in pressure rate allowed.
- 1:18:42They they do not give up anything.
- 1:18:44Now you could say two games, small sample size, not a great
- 1:18:46competition, that's fair. But they're doing a lot of
- 1:18:49things very well in the past protection side so far you know
- 1:18:52doing it's the doing the things right against those lower
- 1:18:54levels. Yes.
- 1:18:55Now I'm surprised you say that. And then looking at the two
- 1:19:00games they've played this year because they had a comeback
- 1:19:02against Albany State. I don't know what Albany State
- 1:19:05is. I want to say D2 I don't think.
- 1:19:07I think at their FCSOK and then ECU last week same thing.
- 1:19:12This is not a good ECU team this year and they had a comeback on
- 1:19:15them. So hearing how good they played
- 1:19:18offensively, hear an explosive running plays, something's not
- 1:19:22quite either they are hitting home runs at the exact right
- 1:19:26time to win games or there's a lot more that's going on behind
- 1:19:31the scenes there about why they are struggling with not the best
- 1:19:36of teams. Let's flip to the sensitive side
- 1:19:38of the ball, Brian. Let's talk about the schemes and
- 1:19:42something unique we're probably going to see from their
- 1:19:45defensive coordinator, Jason Samoa.
- 1:19:49Yeah, I mean it's a, it's a, it's a 425I mean he calls it
- 1:19:53A425I mean it looks like a 245. They they they used to stand up
- 1:19:58D NS. And the reason I say it's more
- 1:20:02of a 4245 is that they do use those those ends in a lot of
- 1:20:07zone blitz schemes, right. So that they're they're dropping
- 1:20:10those guys in coverage on a regular basis, not, not
- 1:20:13necessarily both at the same time, but sometimes they do, but
- 1:20:16it's usually one or the other. You know the he's the he's the
- 1:20:21new guy, first year taking over for Lance Guidry.
- 1:20:25Scheme is pretty much the same though.
- 1:20:27So you're not going to see a bunch of different, different
- 1:20:32differences from a scheme perspective, but it's deployed a
- 1:20:34little bit different. You got a new guy that's calling
- 1:20:36the place in there. All right.
- 1:20:38So it's always interesting anytime you see a change in play
- 1:20:41caller as we're seeing on the defense this year.
- 1:20:45It can happen and things can change.
- 1:20:47Let's talk about some of the players on their defensive side
- 1:20:49of the ball and I'm going to start with Sam Burden of 6 foot
- 1:20:52two £230 defensive lineman. He is at a Spanish river
- 1:20:57community in Boca Raton, FL. He is a class of 2018 eighteen
- 1:21:0119202122. He is a fifth year guy, probably
- 1:21:05with a COVID year of eligibility left.
- 1:21:08Not a lot of offers coming out. The Thune Cookman FIU or some
- 1:21:12that did give him some offers. FIU as a walk on offer.
- 1:21:16But you know what? As a two star guy, he's gotten
- 1:21:19to Marshall and he's actually made a kind of a decent career
- 1:21:23of it so far. Especially the last two years.
- 1:21:2621 and 2261 Total tackles, 11 1/2 titles for loss along with
- 1:21:31eight sacks already starting this year with a strong
- 1:21:34campaign. 6 tackle, excuse me, 9 tackles, 3 1/2 sacks.
- 1:21:40Brian what is his tape showing as far as it goes and does he
- 1:21:45stand up or is he up and down with his hand?
- 1:21:47He's the standup guy. Unless they go into like a true
- 1:21:50dime package, which they will from time to time, that dime
- 1:21:56package is kind of a a three man line.
- 1:21:59So the the the two standup D n's will be the the the hand of the
- 1:22:02dirt D n's and that look there. But he's a he's a standup.
- 1:22:06You call him outside linebacker and call him DN depending on
- 1:22:08which way you want to spin it there.
- 1:22:10But he's their best all around D lineman.
- 1:22:12We'll call him a D lineman in this case, really good
- 1:22:15combinations of strength and speed and he will get, like I
- 1:22:19said he will get dropped in coverage on zone blitz calls
- 1:22:22there. They'll also use them as a spy
- 1:22:26if you got an athletic quarterback, so look for that.
- 1:22:28If Drones is the guy this week and like I said, when they
- 1:22:34rarely go into that dime look, he'll be the in that four eye
- 1:22:36alignment. We got anything extra on him
- 1:22:41Shelton from analytics perspective?
- 1:22:44Yes, he is the 4th highest rating group of five edge
- 1:22:48rusher. He's got 12 quarterback
- 1:22:51pressures and 51 pass rush opportunities, which is around
- 1:22:5625%. So about quarter, the time he's
- 1:22:58getting to the quarterback. Quarter the time he's getting
- 1:23:00the quarterback and I hear 3 1/2 sacks.
- 1:23:02It sounds like when he pressures, it's 1/3 of a time
- 1:23:05he's getting there when he puts the pressure on so.
- 1:23:09Why do you keep putting higher and higher numbers on all these
- 1:23:11guys, Sheldon? I mean, it's not going to, it's
- 1:23:13not going to get better. They they've got a good defense.
- 1:23:15It's not getting better. Well, may well, who's the next
- 1:23:18guy we going to talk about Tally so Sheldon can make us feel
- 1:23:21worse? Talking about linebackers, Eli
- 1:23:23Neal for linebacker, where I was #24, it's about 6 foot 226 out
- 1:23:29of high school. He went to a white station there
- 1:23:32in Memphis, TN. Not a ton.
- 1:23:36A ton of. Big offers out of high school.
- 1:23:39He had about 15 offers, one being Arkansas, I'm sorry, one
- 1:23:46being Arkansas. So Arkansas and Marshall offered
- 1:23:49him. He went to our went to to
- 1:23:52Marshall. He is a 2019 guy so he's been
- 1:23:55there for a little bit. He was 2020 All Conference USA
- 1:24:03Honorable mention. 2021 All Conference USA Honorable
- 1:24:06Mention. 2022 Honorable mention in 2020 in 23, he is a preseason
- 1:24:16All Sunbelt Conference second team with Phil Steele, and then
- 1:24:202023 preseason all Sunbelt Conference first team with
- 1:24:25Athlon. So that's just a little bit of
- 1:24:27accolades that he's had or how they feel about him.
- 1:24:31Where's my other stat on him? Just what he's doing this year?
- 1:24:37From what it's showing, it says he has about 14 tackles so far
- 1:24:42this year, so each game he's had about 7 tackles, half a sack in
- 1:24:48the in the first game. That's what I'm seeing on him.
- 1:24:51Brian, what you got? Yeah, he plays that Mike
- 1:24:55linebacker for them. He he's very effective against
- 1:24:57the run. So you know it.
- 1:25:00It's going to be hard finding some space in that middle there,
- 1:25:04especially if we continue blocking the way we have.
- 1:25:07Does a good job of shedding blockers, uses his hands really
- 1:25:09well, is really physical at the point of attack.
- 1:25:13The only thing I'd say he can get fooled with some
- 1:25:14misdirection, whether it's motion or whether it's using
- 1:25:19your offensive line to kind of create misdirection, whether
- 1:25:22it's in a counter or some sort of RPO going away from the flow.
- 1:25:28He he does primarily key on the guard, so if you can play around
- 1:25:32with that, sometimes you can get him out of position.
- 1:25:34But very sound linebacker overall and good playmaker all.
- 1:25:41Right, bring us break. The more bad news where is he
- 1:25:45like the best linebacker in the G5 level?
- 1:25:48Shelton. Not quite, but he does have
- 1:25:50another good pass pass rush grade up at 83. 66 quarterback
- 1:25:56pressures in in 12 or excuse me, five in nine opportunities.
- 1:26:01So a small sample there, but like I said, I mean these guys
- 1:26:04just they get to the QB all. Right.
- 1:26:07We we keep hearing more about them getting to the QB.
- 1:26:10It's our offensive line. You know what I joked with them?
- 1:26:15I'm going to be at my son's baseball game during this game,
- 1:26:18with the exception of probably about 20 minutes of it.
- 1:26:20So if we win. I don't think y'all are going to
- 1:26:23allow me back in front of the TV, right?
- 1:26:24Especially as good as they are statistic standpoint.
- 1:26:27No more, No more Vt guns for you the rest of the year.
- 1:26:30Live I can watch it on replay when it's over right One more
- 1:26:35player to hit up here and his name is Daytoni Smith.
- 1:26:38He is a defensive back from Highland Springs High School.
- 1:26:42Boys Highland Springs High School had to throw them all
- 1:26:46here. Was a two star prospect when he
- 1:26:48came out back in 2020. So far this year, 11 total
- 1:26:55tackles. He does have one sack.
- 1:26:56He has a past deflection, played in eight games.
- 1:26:59Last year we also had 18 tackles, 3 past deflections and
- 1:27:03just a very short time frame There.
- 1:27:07They put him as defensive back. Where is he going?
- 1:27:09Sigla? We're going to see him at one
- 1:27:11specific spot or is he move around?
- 1:27:14He's moved around. I've seen, I mean he's listed as
- 1:27:16a cornerback, but I've seen him at safety in pretty much I'd say
- 1:27:2275% of the steps I've watched. He's lining up at safety.
- 1:27:27He'll he'll kind of be that third safety in this look here.
- 1:27:30They'll also put him at corner, but he's really strong in man
- 1:27:33coverage. That's where he excels.
- 1:27:36I haven't seen him play a huge factor in in run support, but
- 1:27:41when he does, he is very competent and he he tackles
- 1:27:43pretty well and they'll use him in a lot of the blitz packages.
- 1:27:47He's very effective in getting home, not always getting the
- 1:27:51sack, but he will get there and cause a little bit of disruption
- 1:27:54in the backfield. Alrighty, anything exclusive on
- 1:27:59him, Shelton? Yeah, Brian's eye test kind of
- 1:28:02lined up with most of the grades, Good in coverage, not so
- 1:28:05good in in run sport. And like he was saying, he has
- 1:28:08been used in a lot of different positions, so some in the box
- 1:28:12summit free safety and some of the slot as well.
- 1:28:15So very versatile, versatile player.
- 1:28:18All right, done shocked me coming from Highland Springs and
- 1:28:21what they do out there. So there is no the enemy.
- 1:28:24Some players and some things to look for during the game on
- 1:28:28Saturday at 12 on ESPN2 for the second time this year.
- 1:28:32But now let's talk about what the Hokies keys are and I'm
- 1:28:35going to start with Shelton. Shelton, what is your key for
- 1:28:38the Hokies this week? Yeah.
- 1:28:40So I my key was secondary play. I mean it's got to be better.
- 1:28:43You look at, you know, the running numbers they've been
- 1:28:45giving up, I think most that falls on the guys in the back
- 1:28:47seven. You look at the the freshman
- 1:28:50tech is playing between Caleb Woodson most fields, you throw
- 1:28:53Jalen Jones in there it has not been great.
- 1:28:56I mean these are some of you know the worst grades and and
- 1:28:58all the power five quite frankly at their respective positions.
- 1:29:01We saw them try monster lanes, summit safety, but that's not
- 1:29:05going to be you know a dependable strategy for the
- 1:29:06entire game. So the secretary play has to be
- 1:29:10better. I think they need to do better
- 1:29:12job of sticking to their assignments and playing
- 1:29:14anticipatory football. All righty, Sigla, what do you
- 1:29:20got this week as far as your hokey keys go?
- 1:29:24Get home. We've got to get in the
- 1:29:27backfield, whether that's disrupting, using the defensive
- 1:29:30line to disrupt the rushing lanes, get those tackles for
- 1:29:33losses, but also getting after the quarterback and putting them
- 1:29:37behind the chains significantly. Because right now, teams that
- 1:29:43right now feel that they can run the football against us if the
- 1:29:47down and distance is 8 or less, they they're comfortable.
- 1:29:50Are it's third, third and eight, Fuck it.
- 1:29:52We'll run the ball against this team.
- 1:29:54We'll probably get the first down.
- 1:29:55We've got to get the Marshall behind the sticks consistently
- 1:29:59and make them have to go to the throw and then we have to
- 1:30:02continue to tackle well. If we can do that, we can slow
- 1:30:05this team down all. Righty, Tally.
- 1:30:09I think after here Tally wrote this down the a couple last
- 1:30:13night and then after hearing Shelton's, it's even going to be
- 1:30:15more clear, right? Yeah, we got to keep the
- 1:30:17quarterback clean, man. Got to keep the quarterback
- 1:30:20clean. He ran the ball 22 times against
- 1:30:23Rutgers. So he's going to get out and
- 1:30:24he's going to try to make some plays, put his feet.
- 1:30:27But when he's in the pocket and he's trying to deliver throws,
- 1:30:31especially after hearing about all the people that they have
- 1:30:33that are rushing the passer, that are getting home, that are,
- 1:30:36you know, just. Causing chaos in the backfield.
- 1:30:41We got to keep whoever the quarterback is there upright.
- 1:30:44It's covering drones. We got to keep them clean.
- 1:30:47If it's Grant wells, we got to keep them clean because if we
- 1:30:49don't do that, it's going to get ugly for us.
- 1:30:52Yeah, I agree with you there. I got a little one on the
- 1:30:55offensive side of the ball too and it's going to be third down
- 1:30:57efficiency. We need to continue the
- 1:30:59improvement for due on 3rd and 4th down conversions.
- 1:31:02We were 21%. That took a significant
- 1:31:07increase, almost 100% increase. Going against Rutgers went up to
- 1:31:1239%. We need to continue to do that.
- 1:31:15If for nothing else, it's going to help the defense if we're
- 1:31:19staying off the field. We dominated TOP versus Rutgers.
- 1:31:23I think that's one reason why the dam didn't break until as
- 1:31:25late as it did, because we did keep them off the field.
- 1:31:29So keep that trending in the right direction.
- 1:31:32Keep converting the third downs, keep converting the 4th downs.
- 1:31:35I will say this Brent Prize aggressiveness.
- 1:31:38This year I've liked. There's been times where it's
- 1:31:41like we're not pun, we're not going, we're trying to score
- 1:31:43points, which does make me a happy individual.
- 1:31:47So Sheldon, you got one more thing you want to throw in on
- 1:31:50this? Yeah.
- 1:31:52So just to find out where I'm Marshall, obviously, they've
- 1:31:55really struggled to run the ball this year.
- 1:31:57We talked about the really good pass protection, I think if
- 1:32:00you're looking for comps to Virginia Tech's previous
- 1:32:02opponents. Their offense is probably not
- 1:32:04quite as good as Rutgers, but definitely a much more
- 1:32:07formidable opponent than than Old Dominion was.
- 1:32:10They have a very experienced defense, They've got multiple
- 1:32:134th year starters, 5th year starters, even one sixth year
- 1:32:16player, and you know, bottom line, this is a really, really
- 1:32:19good defensive program. Not just team, but program.
- 1:32:22You look at over the past three years and SP plus defensive
- 1:32:26rankings 22nd, 41st and 8th. So they had the 8th best defense
- 1:32:31of the country last year according to SP Plus and that's
- 1:32:33adjusted for strength of schedule, everything so that you
- 1:32:36know that takes without all the teams are playing.
- 1:32:38This is a really, really good defensive program.
- 1:32:39So as we can see by the the Vegas line do not expect a lot
- 1:32:43of points and Bridget Tech is going to have to try really hard
- 1:32:45to to get some points on the scoreboard today.
- 1:32:47So I expect a grudge match. Alrighty.
- 1:32:50Well, let's look to it. Let's get to our prediction and
- 1:32:53big screeners, which this week we actually have a sponsor for
- 1:32:57this. This is going to be presented by
- 1:32:59Prize Picks. We are proud to announce a new
- 1:33:02partnership with Prize Picks for our big screeners and pick
- 1:33:05segment. Prize Picks is a daily fantasy
- 1:33:08app where you make entries based on player projection.
- 1:33:10This week this is my boy although.
- 1:33:16If he's hurt, I might take this one off.
- 1:33:19I got Brandon, I you going for more than 53 1/2 yards against
- 1:33:22the Giants. I'll take Moser less than 60 1/2
- 1:33:27against the Broncos. That's my 2 for the week price.
- 1:33:30Picks will match any deposit up to $100 when you sign up using
- 1:33:35our code BCPICKS. That's BC picks.
- 1:33:42And if you look right there on the screen right now, there is a
- 1:33:45little QR code. You can also click that or head
- 1:33:48to boundarycornerbt.com back slash BC picks.
- 1:33:53Last week we all picked the exact same record, everybody was
- 1:33:57two and five. So if you're bend the lines on
- 1:34:00our games, maybe not, but we'll say Tally, you're starting it
- 1:34:06off. What's going to happen this week
- 1:34:08at Marshall? You know what, man?
- 1:34:10I'm going to say. Last week I picked Rutgers to
- 1:34:14win. This week I'm going to go, I'm
- 1:34:17going to go with the Hokies, man.
- 1:34:19I think that we're going to go in, we're going to have a little
- 1:34:22bit more of a game plan or what we need to do, and I'm going to
- 1:34:26say Hokies pull this game off 2821.
- 1:34:34I'm taking the Hokies, man. If if we don't get this one,
- 1:34:38though, I'm going to start having a little bit of doubt
- 1:34:40creeping in. You're probably going to see
- 1:34:42another team's logo pop up next week, but I'm going Hokies 27th,
- 1:34:48Marshall 21. I think it's kind of a
- 1:34:51Grindfest. I think we get one late to kind
- 1:34:53of put it over the top. All right, Shelton.
- 1:34:58I'm taking the Hokies also outright, mainly based on gut
- 1:35:01feel. I think Kyron Jones is going to
- 1:35:03make a couple of big plays with his feet.
- 1:35:06Even though I'm concerned about this matchup because Marshall
- 1:35:08has some lockdown corners and obviously they they don't really
- 1:35:11let anyone get to the quarterback, I I just got to go
- 1:35:14with my gut, my gut saying BT, they're going to make a couple
- 1:35:16big plays late and they're going to come away with a with a close
- 1:35:18win. All righty, I'm I'm with y'all
- 1:35:20as well. A little different score, 2717
- 1:35:23here. Hokies win again.
- 1:35:26It's Utah, the Gut Field Show. And I think it's also, you watch
- 1:35:30them play as good as they are, statistically as good as they
- 1:35:33are, they have been in two wars. The Albany State game has to be
- 1:35:38questioned. They were down and had to have
- 1:35:40two fourth quarter scores to come back in that game to beat
- 1:35:43them 21 to 17. That's why I'm sticking with the
- 1:35:47Hokies on this one. All righty big screeners time
- 1:35:52and good God all. When we started talking and
- 1:35:54texting yesterday with the amount of big games coming on
- 1:36:00this week, it was insane. This is my big Screener.
- 1:36:03Hey, it's going to be on in the afternoon so I will get to
- 1:36:06actually watch it. After baseball, we got the
- 1:36:10Colorado Buffaloes who pulled out somewhat of a miracle
- 1:36:14against Colorado State for all those I saw somebody put up
- 1:36:18there the other day. I don't know how my body's doing
- 1:36:20is staying up to 2:00 in the morning.
- 1:36:22Y'all are some non veteran people out there.
- 1:36:26Veteran of PAC 12 after dark. You stand until 2:00 all the
- 1:36:30time to watch the late games on the West Coast and people
- 1:36:33complaining. Get up at 2:00 or go to bed at
- 1:36:352:00. Wake up at 6:30 with the kids in
- 1:36:38this game. That is a massive line.
- 1:36:41Colorado is going to score points.
- 1:36:43I do not have a doubt about that.
- 1:36:45I do think Oregon wins, but. You're going to give me 19 1/2
- 1:36:49points With the way Shamir Sanders and that offenses looked
- 1:36:52thus far, I will take it. I don't know what the Over under
- 1:36:55is, but lock that up as well because this is going to be a
- 1:36:57shootout at the zoo in Austin. Yeah, let's see who's next on
- 1:37:04that one. Tally.
- 1:37:05Tally, who you got? Yeah, man, I'm.
- 1:37:07I'm taking to Colorado as well. I think Oregon wins that game.
- 1:37:11But you know, 19 1/2 points, that's a lot of points, man.
- 1:37:14I don't think that, Oregon. Blows them off the field by 20
- 1:37:18points. No way.
- 1:37:20No way. You're with me here.
- 1:37:22All righty, what about this one for you?
- 1:37:26I'm going with the Buffs. Oregon will win the game.
- 1:37:28But sure, Sanders is a gamer. He's not going to go down
- 1:37:30without a fight. Brian, we're going across the
- 1:37:35board here. I'm right there with you.
- 1:37:37I think Sanders is going to be a gamer.
- 1:37:41Even if they fall behind 123 stores, I think you'll do
- 1:37:45something late, kind of bring that thing close.
- 1:37:47I do think Oregon ends up pulling up the wind, but 19 1/2
- 1:37:50is just too much water. Way too much.
- 1:37:52By the way, we should have got this line earlier or later.
- 1:37:56Like an hour ago it went up to 21.
- 1:37:59Just so y'all know I'd even be hammering buffaloes even more.
- 1:38:0271 1/2 is the over under. That seems way too way too
- 1:38:07small. All righty Brian, you are up
- 1:38:10next. What game do you have on the
- 1:38:11docket this week? I got the Ole Miss Bama game and
- 1:38:15I'm. This is interesting.
- 1:38:17I mean it's obviously 22 ranked SEC opponents.
- 1:38:22But to me this is interesting because this might be depending
- 1:38:26on what Alabama is able to do. We haven't seen really good
- 1:38:30offense from this Alabama team in any game so far this year.
- 1:38:35They're switching back to Millro.
- 1:38:37I mean they they had a quarterback shelf of the last
- 1:38:39three weeks, so I'm interested to see what happens here.
- 1:38:44But I've got Old miss. I mean 11 1/2 is a whole lot for
- 1:38:47a team that's struggling that much delay.
- 1:38:49So give me Old Miss. It'll be a tight one.
- 1:38:51I think Alabama might squeak it, but if they don't, this could be
- 1:38:54the earliest that Alabama is a non factor.
- 1:38:57Maybe in the College Football Playoff. 2010, yeah, right. 2010
- 1:39:05was the last time it was this early.
- 1:39:07And I'm with him. By the way, we caught this line
- 1:39:09at a great point. This line has went down 4 1/2
- 1:39:12points since we locked it in yesterday.
- 1:39:14Give me Ole Miss as well. Especially the way Alabama is
- 1:39:18struggling on offense. I I I can't foresee who's gonna
- 1:39:21actually win the game. Because I feel like save it
- 1:39:24against Disciples. He always does well, but I'll
- 1:39:27definitely take Ole Miss with 11 1/2 points.
- 1:39:29Tally tally who you got. Yeah, I'm going to Ole Miss as
- 1:39:33well, man. I mean, Alabama making another
- 1:39:36quarterback change. They've been in quarterback
- 1:39:38disarray, worse than the Hokies as far as who's going to play,
- 1:39:41who's not going to play Lane usually if he just goes out and
- 1:39:46coaches a football game. I think it'll be a good game.
- 1:39:49You know, Lane, last year, he gets so caught up in the him
- 1:39:53versus saving thing. He just makes stupid, you know,
- 1:39:56going for it on his own 30 and stuff like that.
- 1:39:59If he just goes out and he coaches a football game, I think
- 1:40:02we'll have a close game again. I can't pick who wins that game,
- 1:40:05but I don't think Alabama beats him by 12 points.
- 1:40:10But you shall. Yeah, I'm taking Bama mainly
- 1:40:13because Nick Saban. I I trust a a mad Nick Saban led
- 1:40:18team. I know they did not play well.
- 1:40:20They did not play well last week.
- 1:40:22I know he's going to give it to them.
- 1:40:23So they're going to come out motivated this week?
- 1:40:25That's fair. That is fair.
- 1:40:27That is very fair. It is.
- 1:40:29He easily bounces back pretty strong.
- 1:40:32All right, Tally, where are you going on Saturday afternoon with
- 1:40:37your big Screener? We got to go Clemson, Florida
- 1:40:40State, man. I mean, everybody picked them to
- 1:40:42be at the top of ACC this year. We got Florida State, what 2 1/2
- 1:40:48points, 3 1/2 three and a half. We called it early.
- 1:40:51I thought we got a 3 1/2. We got a 2 1/2. 2 1/2 Yeah, man,
- 1:40:57you know what? I'm taking Clemson.
- 1:40:59I'm taking Clemson in this game. I've seen some kings in the
- 1:41:02armor for Florida State. We've been talking about Florida
- 1:41:04State being a being a College Football Playoff team and and
- 1:41:10they may, but you know, I think Clemson has something to prove.
- 1:41:14I've seen BC give. I know it's the red banana game.
- 1:41:18I know those games are crazy. But I'm not just ready to say
- 1:41:21Florida State is all the way back, so I'm taking Clemson
- 1:41:27Sheldon. Yes, I'm taking FSU.
- 1:41:31I think FSU is at the point now in terms of their recruiting
- 1:41:34development where they have the skill guys to compete with
- 1:41:36Clemson. Personally, I think Clemson
- 1:41:38skill players are a little bit average.
- 1:41:40So I think this is a game where I expect FSU to win.
- 1:41:43I think they've got the the better quarterback and they're
- 1:41:45gonna they're gonna win this game.
- 1:41:47Yeah. Down in Death Valley high noon
- 1:41:49so opposite of the Hokies game so get you definitely get you
- 1:41:52two screens going. I'm I'm with Shelton on this
- 1:41:56tally and I think what happened in the Red Bandana game was the
- 1:42:00best thing that happened to Florida State.
- 1:42:03They got challenged by a team a lot lesser than them in a
- 1:42:07hostile environment. If they go up there and blow the
- 1:42:10doors off, BCI might lean the other way.
- 1:42:15But I think having that adversity, it's an easy thing to
- 1:42:17coach to like. Look what just happened.
- 1:42:19We took our foot off the gas. We took our off the prize.
- 1:42:22We damn near loss to a team that almost lost the Holy Cross and
- 1:42:27did lose to Northern Illinois. Give me the Knowles.
- 1:42:30Give me the Knowles by two scores.
- 1:42:32Oh, OK, I'm give me the. He's locking it up.
- 1:42:35He's locking it up. I'm saying it's going to be a
- 1:42:38they're going, they're going to dispatch a Clemson pretty easy.
- 1:42:41Well, not easy, but you know. Well, I'm going Florida State as
- 1:42:46well here and for a lot of the same reasons.
- 1:42:49You know, I think talent wise they're there.
- 1:42:51But Curtis mentioned it. They got a test.
- 1:42:55I think we're going to see a similar type of urgency that we
- 1:42:57saw from UNC against Minnesota after they had that scare at App
- 1:43:02State. I think it's going to be a
- 1:43:04similar type situation. Florida State comes out focused,
- 1:43:08ready to handle Clemson. And I think as Shelton said, the
- 1:43:12skill position players for Clemson are very pedestrian.
- 1:43:15You got Shipley and then a bunch of guys.
- 1:43:17There's there's not really a standout, a ton of standout
- 1:43:21skill position players like they're used to having.
- 1:43:23So give me Florida State here. Alrighty.
- 1:43:29And if that wasn't enough, Shelton's pick is, I think, the
- 1:43:33highest rated game of the week #9 against #6.
- 1:43:37Sheldon, who'd you pick on yours?
- 1:43:40Give me the Buckeyes. I trust Ryan Day.
- 1:43:44I'm a big Ryan Day fan. I know he's kind of
- 1:43:46underperformed and in some of those big time games, but I
- 1:43:48think this is the one where he gets him back and he gets a big,
- 1:43:51I'd say, fan base. Inducing confidence Win.
- 1:43:59The way they've looked. He needs it.
- 1:44:01I who you got Tally. Tally.
- 1:44:04Man, I'm gonna go Notre Dame in this, man.
- 1:44:06I just, I've watched Sam Hartman.
- 1:44:08They had a show. I can't remember what the name
- 1:44:10of the show is, but I watched him in high school, then it
- 1:44:13watched him in college, and now he's with the Notre Dame.
- 1:44:15And I, I mean, he's a kids, a gamer, man.
- 1:44:19I think he's gonna go and he's gonna have a good game and
- 1:44:21they're gonna take this one. Alrighty.
- 1:44:25I am next on this one. This one is at Notre Dame under
- 1:44:28the touchdown. Jesus.
- 1:44:30And to be honest, just the way the Buckeyes offense has looked,
- 1:44:34I'm going to take the 3 1/2 points we're getting with the
- 1:44:36Notre Dame. I don't know who went.
- 1:44:38It's just like the Ole Miss game.
- 1:44:40I that game. I can't see Bamma winning by
- 1:44:43more than two scores this game. I think it's going to be that
- 1:44:46classic 2728 game. Whoever has the ball potentially
- 1:44:50last wins, and I got to go with Notre Dame just because of Sam
- 1:44:54Hartman being at home. Give me the points, home Dog
- 1:44:59points, baby. See.
- 1:45:02Yeah, I'm. I'm going to Ohio State here.
- 1:45:04I think that so far the Ohio State hasn't really put a a
- 1:45:09full, complete game out there yet.
- 1:45:11I think they buckle up for a big ring to match up and finally do
- 1:45:16that. And I think they're able to
- 1:45:18cover that 3 1/2. I I think it's still like a six
- 1:45:20or seven point game, but I think they win by a score late, Wins
- 1:45:24by a score late. All right, we got one more.
- 1:45:27It's just another big game this week.
- 1:45:29It's Saturday night under the lights at Kennick Stadium where
- 1:45:33top ten train, top ten teams dreams go to die.
- 1:45:37How many times if people went into that place, they wave to
- 1:45:40the kids at the hospital and the next thing you know I was
- 1:45:43beating you 1312 because some fluky stuff happens.
- 1:45:47Brian, you're going to lead out with this one.
- 1:45:50We talked we should have held on a few more minutes on this one.
- 1:45:52I guess one this one went up to today 1330 1/2 eighteen and a
- 1:45:59actually it's not at Kenneck. I thought it was a Kenneck.
- 1:46:05It's a it's at Penn State. That's.
- 1:46:08It's Penn State. It went to 14 1/2 today.
- 1:46:11So Brian, who you got? Well, that's why I got Penn
- 1:46:16State. Yeah.
- 1:46:21So if they were waving at the kids, you know that 10 1/2 and
- 1:46:24even you know what you said 14 1/2 would would be a little bit
- 1:46:27much. But in Happy Valley, 10 1/2
- 1:46:32seems just about right. So I'm going to go Penn State
- 1:46:34here. Well, my original pick was me
- 1:46:36looking at it completely ass backwards and thinking it was a
- 1:46:39Kennick, not at Beaver Stadium. Well.
- 1:46:43It's on the board. It's on the board now, Curtis.
- 1:46:45Sorry, buddy. Oh, you might be right.
- 1:46:48Once. Once the bet, once the bet goes
- 1:46:51in, you know you can't get that ticket back, right?
- 1:46:54Should've looked a little bit closer.
- 1:46:56It's like being in Vegas, being drunk, making a stupid bet,
- 1:46:58right? Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:47:01But my hope is. That it's a.
- 1:47:02Low score. I mean we were, we were all two
- 1:47:04and five last week. I mean, this is just as much of
- 1:47:06A dice rolls. In right, Exactly.
- 1:47:09And you know what? Maybe I always Defense shows up
- 1:47:11to play, keeps it to an ugly 2115 game.
- 1:47:19Who's got this next tally? Tally.
- 1:47:20Tally. I got to go with Penn State,
- 1:47:23man. Just I just looked at it in
- 1:47:24there at home. I got, I got to go Penn State
- 1:47:26with the win and Shelton to wrap us up here.
- 1:47:32Yes, give me the mini lions. One thing I've learned in in the
- 1:47:37betting world is that I don't trust teams that have really bad
- 1:47:39offenses against teams is really exposed to playmakers like Penn
- 1:47:42State has. Even though I was office is
- 1:47:44really good. I just do not trust them going
- 1:47:47in there and getting and covering the spread.
- 1:47:50So give me a Penn State and their playmakers.
- 1:47:51By the way, The Quarterback Hour, he's he's been really,
- 1:47:54really good this year. So that even adds to my
- 1:47:56confidence. Very nice.
- 1:47:58All right, so there are our big screeners and I hokey
- 1:48:00predictions for the week. Anything boys wrapped up in an
- 1:48:03hour and 50 minutes? I'm sorry, we had to go on a
- 1:48:06tangent the first half. Y'all we had, we had a couple
- 1:48:09rants, so we had to get off our chests.
- 1:48:10Man, you know that sometimes that pumps things up of extra
- 1:48:131520 minutes. Yes, Sir.
- 1:48:15All right. Anything changed?
- 1:48:17I'm looking at my fantasy score real quick.
- 1:48:19Hey, I. Pulled out the victory, man.
- 1:48:21Oh, you got another kick? As well I got an 18 point lead
- 1:48:25with approximately 6 minutes left.
- 1:48:28So going for 01/2 and fantasy or two and 01 fantasy.
