Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Well, I would be dereliction of duty if I didn't
- 0:04Speaker 1: update you on what's going on with the latest Daniel
- 0:07Speaker 1: Jones saga as the Giants release their QB three. All right,
- 0:17Speaker 1: well here I want leg up on sports. I'm Alex Garrett.
- 0:20Speaker 1: Instant reaction to what's going on today at is is
- 0:24Speaker 1: Rutherford at the TIMEX Performance Center where it was just
- 0:28Speaker 1: announced a little while ago that Daniel Jones was released.
- 0:34Speaker 1: Here's the same thing from John Marra on Daniel Jones.
- 0:37Speaker 1: Daniel came to see me this morning and asked if
- 0:38Speaker 1: we could release him. We mutually agreed that it would
- 0:42Speaker 1: be best for him and for the team. Daniel has
- 0:44Speaker 1: been a great representative of our organization, first class in
- 0:47Speaker 1: every way. His handling of this situation yesterday exemplifies just that.
- 0:52Speaker 1: We are all disappointed how things have worked out. We
- 0:57Speaker 1: hold Daniel in high regard and I have great appreciation
- 1:00Speaker 1: for him. We wish him well, We wish him nothing
- 1:03Speaker 1: but the best in the future. I don't know if
- 1:07Speaker 1: Daniel Jones would be a QB one anywhere else. I
- 1:11Speaker 1: think the Giants gave him quite the opportunity to be
- 1:14Speaker 1: QB one, even though he was struggling week after week.
- 1:19Speaker 1: In fact, I think to be a QB one in
- 1:21Speaker 1: New York City one of the toughest players to play,
- 1:25Speaker 1: is quite the honor. But apparently there were side situations
- 1:30Speaker 1: where Jones and the relationship with the Giants got sour,
- 1:34Speaker 1: and I think the hard Knocks stuff where Joe Shane
- 1:37Speaker 1: was literally saying, you know, we don't want Jones's quarterback.
- 1:39Speaker 1: I mean, there was a lot of public airing out
- 1:42Speaker 1: of laundry that I'm sure Daniel Jones got tired of
- 1:49Speaker 1: that being said. I think the stateman's nice. I've got
- 2:00Speaker 1: a different feeling than maybe some do. You know, if
- 2:03Speaker 1: you get benched, you stick it out. You're a forty
- 2:07Speaker 1: million dollar quarterback. You don't ask to be released. You
- 2:12Speaker 1: stick it out because maybe just maybe it's uh, it's
- 2:17Speaker 1: going to be needed, that you're needed back out there,
- 2:19Speaker 1: and you're paid to go back out there. I think
- 2:23Speaker 1: for Jones to request this is not a manly move
- 2:30Speaker 1: because if every time somebody got benched, like Michael Jordan
- 2:34Speaker 1: got benched in high school and he you know, he
- 2:38Speaker 1: learned from that and of course it went on to
- 2:41Speaker 1: be a bulls successful most successful bulls player in the history.
- 2:48Speaker 1: But in almost NBA history. But Jones doesn't want to
- 2:52Speaker 1: stick it out, and I think the benching was supposed
- 2:57Speaker 1: to be a humble pie for him, not so much
- 3:00Speaker 1: a out right way to leave, like an out if
- 3:05Speaker 1: you will. I understand he was pissed off and they
- 3:11Speaker 1: benched him, I guess in Germany. But you know what, Daniel,
- 3:16Speaker 1: you have to be more humble. You're not gonna be
- 3:19Speaker 1: a QB one anywhere else. I'm sorry to tell you that,
- 3:23Speaker 1: but you're not. And while the press conference was graceful
- 3:29Speaker 1: and all this, I think the fact that he went
- 3:31Speaker 1: into the office to see Dabiel ab Mearra today and
- 3:36Speaker 1: asked to be released shows he's not tough enough to
- 3:40Speaker 1: be benched. He doesn't think he has to be benched.
- 3:45Speaker 1: That's how I view it. So what of the future
- 3:49Speaker 1: after the season has got You stick with your team
- 3:52Speaker 1: through the rest of the year and don't walk out
- 3:55Speaker 1: on your team, even if you're not QB one anymore.
- 4:03Speaker 1: If I walked out every time, you know, I was
- 4:08Speaker 1: taking off a show or something like that, I wouldn't
- 4:11Speaker 1: be working in radio still. But I've been in the
- 4:17Speaker 1: business of where I'm at for twelve years because I've
- 4:19Speaker 1: been through stepbacks, I've overcome them. It seems like this
- 4:24Speaker 1: move Daniel Jones could not handle being benched. The Giants
- 4:30Speaker 1: didn't want to release him. Maybe they did, but they
- 4:33Speaker 1: wanted him to come to them, and he did. He
- 4:37Speaker 1: could have stuck it out being QB one, two or three.
- 4:45Speaker 1: But this move doesn't show any team spirit mid season.
- 4:56Speaker 1: I don't care if you're two and eight, you still
- 4:59Speaker 1: have seven games that you could do something. Okay, now,
- 5:05Speaker 1: I don't think they're gonna we love seven wins, but
- 5:08Speaker 1: you never know. I also think it's funny because the
- 5:12Speaker 1: night before they bench Jones for Tommy DeVito, I said,
- 5:16Speaker 1: talking Giants, I said, give Dabel the right QB and
- 5:20Speaker 1: something can happen. But when they first benched Jones, I
- 5:25Speaker 1: didn't think he'd walk out on the team days later.
- 5:30Speaker 1: I thought he'd want to learn from it. I thought
- 5:32Speaker 1: he'd want to just be part of the team, to
- 5:35Speaker 1: be a team player. This whole situation makes giving him
- 5:42Speaker 1: the forty mili right a year a disaster. But I
- 5:48Speaker 1: don't think Daniel Jones handled this right. I think he
- 5:53Speaker 1: backdoored this and it was his way out. When you're
- 5:59Speaker 1: on a team, I think the expectancy for any player
- 6:05Speaker 1: should be to play. If you're in baseball, one hundred
- 6:07Speaker 1: and sixty two games with the team should be whether
- 6:10Speaker 1: you know, unless you can trade. Of course, UH should
- 6:12Speaker 1: be playing what eighty two games? Eighty one games with
- 6:16Speaker 1: the NBA and NHL, whatever team you're on, there is
- 6:21Speaker 1: a seventeen game schedule eighteen weeks where you are a
- 6:28Speaker 1: band of brothers no matter what the hell is happening.
- 6:34Speaker 1: Daniel Jones is proving he's not a team player by
- 6:38Speaker 1: asking to be released. He doesn't want to see how
- 6:44Speaker 1: the Giant season, which he's commanded for better or for
- 6:48Speaker 1: worse for most of the season, turns out. Finish the
- 6:55Speaker 1: job and then see what happens next year. But don't
- 7:01Speaker 1: back your way out of an organization now midway through
- 7:06Speaker 1: just because they benched you. What happened today shows a
- 7:11Speaker 1: lot more about Jones's character and thoughts about being benched
- 7:19Speaker 1: than does the Giants. I think the Giants would have
- 7:23Speaker 1: been I'm maybe not happy, but would have been dealing
- 7:28Speaker 1: with him on the bench and Jones couldn't send it. Now.
- 7:34Speaker 1: He's a nice guy. I hear, he's a decent person,
- 7:37Speaker 1: and he's handled a lot of this with class. But
- 7:40Speaker 1: to be asked to be released, it just doesn't sit
- 7:46Speaker 1: right with me. It says, you don't want me as
- 7:52Speaker 1: your leader, then I'm gone. You don't want me to
- 7:59Speaker 1: throw another foot ball for you, then I'm gone. If
- 8:07Speaker 1: they have made this decision and really just let Jones
- 8:12Speaker 1: finish out the year with this contract, uh, maybe that
- 8:16Speaker 1: would have been the best bet, even though it was.
- 8:18Speaker 1: It's been a horrible season and some winnaple games. The
- 8:23Speaker 1: Giants should be at least four and six right now,
- 8:31Speaker 1: That's how I see it. But now now it's a
- 8:43Speaker 1: mutual agreement. But Daniel Joe asked to be a release,
- 8:50Speaker 1: and I just doesn't That doesn't smell like humility to me.
- 8:53Speaker 1: That doesn't seem like humility to me. It seems like
- 8:58Speaker 1: a way out. And I don't know if he'll be
- 9:02Speaker 1: a QB one anywhere else. To be very honest with you,
- 9:06Speaker 1: he's athletic. He has also had a playbook where the
- 9:12Speaker 1: short game was not there. If they had just stuck
- 9:14Speaker 1: with him on the short game, they'd be winning more. Okay,
- 9:17Speaker 1: he's not a good long throw along down the field thrower.
- 9:22Speaker 1: He's more of a short game guy. A checkdown kind
- 9:24Speaker 1: of guy. He makes those passes very well, and of
- 9:27Speaker 1: course he runs. So maybe he goes with the playbook
- 9:30Speaker 1: where they understand he can do the short game, not
- 9:34Speaker 1: the long throws, but the short game and the run game.
- 9:38Speaker 1: That'll be different for him. And maybe you can do
- 9:42Speaker 1: some head scratching thoughts too, like why they have Jones
- 9:45Speaker 1: in this situation, but not that one, this, that and the other.
- 9:50Speaker 1: But from today, for today, he is or was signed
- 9:58Speaker 1: to be a member of the New York Giants for
- 10:01Speaker 1: better or for worse, and he just walked away from
- 10:06Speaker 1: that commitment after being benched with seven games left in
- 10:13Speaker 1: the season, where anything can happen. I just think there
- 10:18Speaker 1: should be an eye, that there should be a team
- 10:23Speaker 1: spirit here, and there's not. That's why I'm of the
- 10:27Speaker 1: wrong way today. With this released announcement, a lot of
- 10:30Speaker 1: Giant fans are saying thank God. A lot of Giant
- 10:32Speaker 1: fans are saying good riddance. A lot of Giants fans
- 10:34Speaker 1: are saying thanks for that memorable twenty twenty two year.
- 10:37Speaker 1: And that was a special year. He did get in
- 10:39Speaker 1: the playoffs that year and that did help Dave Will
- 10:41Speaker 1: get the Coach of the Year but but I just
- 10:50Speaker 1: think this is a character flaw to ask to be
- 10:56Speaker 1: released after you're no longer asked to be the leading man,
- 11:03Speaker 1: but a supporting character on the bench, soaking it all in.
- 11:09Speaker 1: And I know being bench is tough, I understand that.
- 11:14Speaker 1: But resilience is through staying and learning what he could
- 11:19Speaker 1: from the sidelines and being there as a team member.
- 11:24Speaker 1: That's why I'm miffed about this. He could learn about
- 11:29Speaker 1: learn from the sidelines and be a team member and
- 11:35Speaker 1: support and he chose not to go that route. And
- 11:41Speaker 1: that is a character flaw that I've found today. You
- 11:48Speaker 1: stick it out, no matter if you're on the bench
- 11:50Speaker 1: or not. You stick it out and support the squad,
- 11:54Speaker 1: the squad that you led for what ten weeks. Now
- 12:01Speaker 1: because of the setback, you're out. I don't get it,
- 12:10Speaker 1: and at the same time, I do get it, But
- 12:13Speaker 1: it doesn't make it anymore acceptable to leave a team
- 12:20Speaker 1: mid season. That's abandoning ship at the toughest time. Well,
- 12:30Speaker 1: Tommy DeVito gets the snaps on Sunday. We'll see how
- 12:32Speaker 1: he does, and I'm excited. I love Tommy DeVito's energy.
- 12:35Speaker 1: I love what he did for the few weeks he
- 12:37Speaker 1: had in charge there last year, and Sunday might have
- 12:41Speaker 1: a very different energy at MetLife Stadium, even as his
- 12:44Speaker 1: team is two and eight. We're always optimistic city, a
- 12:47Speaker 1: hopeful city. I think Tommy DeVito brings that hope back
- 12:51Speaker 1: to New York Giants football. Good luck to Daniel Jones.
- 12:55Speaker 1: I wish he stayed on as support and a supporting
- 12:58Speaker 1: character for the rest of the twenty twenty four campaign
- 13:05Speaker 1: and the hundredth season by the way, but that wasn't
- 13:10Speaker 1: in the cards. This week, I'm Alex Garretton with my
- 13:14Speaker 1: one leg Up on Sports for Friday, November twenty second,
- 13:18Speaker 1: twenty twenty four.
