- 0:15Speaker 2: Let's chat about UVA, FSU.
- 0:17Speaker 1: Welcome back to ACC Football Addiction, FSU and UVA this weekend.
- 0:24Speaker 1: while who's 24, seven, Jackie, Frank, truly on with us
- 0:28Speaker 1: for a few minutes to talk about the game. We
- 0:30Speaker 1: were talking off air, uh, UVA, a favorite in this game.
- 0:35Speaker 1: I don't think anybody's surprised. And I don't know if
- 0:37Speaker 1: that has more to do with Florida. Say UVA obviously
- 0:40Speaker 1: had the really big week zero win, then dropped the
- 0:42Speaker 1: game at West Virginia. But what is the, so with
- 0:45Speaker 1: both of those things in mind, what is the mood
- 0:48Speaker 1: right now around UVA with kind of the highs and
- 0:51Speaker 1: lows already to start this young season?
- 0:53Speaker 3: Yeah, I think there's some cautious optimism about what this
- 0:58Speaker 3: team can do. I think for me personally, I thought
- 1:00Speaker 3: there was a high ceiling for this team. The only
- 1:03Speaker 3: caveat now is they had a couple of key injuries
- 1:06Speaker 3: like Jason Hammond, a defensive tackle who Florida State saw
- 1:09Speaker 3: last year, who did really well last year. He's hurt.
- 1:12Speaker 3: He's out for the rest of the year. And I
- 1:14Speaker 3: know that's just one guy in the middle of the defense,
- 1:17Speaker 3: but the issue that they have is their depth on
- 1:20Speaker 3: the defensive tackle side because Zion Wilson didn't win his
- 1:23Speaker 3: extra year of eligibility was already down a guy. So
- 1:26Speaker 3: with Jason Hammond out, that's where you're kind of going, okay,
- 1:29Speaker 3: maybe do they have the depth in the defensive line
- 1:31Speaker 3: to go against some of these guys that are a
- 1:33Speaker 3: little bit better as a run offense? Like I'm looking at,
- 1:36Speaker 3: you know, West Virginia, for instance, that's where I highlighted
- 1:39Speaker 3: that was kind of part of the weakness. But overall,
- 1:41Speaker 3: I think Virginia is still a team that can compete
- 1:43Speaker 3: with the ACC, and they do have depth in a
- 1:45Speaker 3: lot of positions. I mean, one of them is at quarterback.
- 1:48Speaker 3: I mean, Bo Perville is a starting quarterback, but then
- 1:50Speaker 3: their backup is Eli Holstein, who's started an ACC game.
- 1:53Speaker 3: So that's why sometimes I think Virginia has a little
- 1:56Speaker 3: bit of the edge. And also, when your average age
- 1:59Speaker 3: on the O-line is almost the average age of the
- 2:02Speaker 3: Dallas Cowboys O-line, I mean, that always weighs you a
- 2:06Speaker 3: little bit.
- 2:08Speaker 1: Um, speaking of Bo Pribula, I don't know if you
- 2:10Speaker 1: saw this. I don't know if you got a smile
- 2:12Speaker 1: out of this or what the UVA reaction was. FSU's
- 2:14Speaker 1: defensive coordinator, Tony Elliott compared Bo Pribula to Tim Tebow,
- 2:18Speaker 1: which I thought was a little, uh, a little much
- 2:22Speaker 1: like I like Bo. I, you know, obviously followed him
- 2:25Speaker 1: coming from Penn state, but, uh, I thought that was
- 2:27Speaker 1: a little bit much, but just maybe back that off
- 2:30Speaker 1: a little bit and tell me your, your thoughts on
- 2:31Speaker 1: him overall through, uh, a handful of games here so far.
- 2:35Speaker 3: Yeah. So For him, I think the first game obviously
- 2:38Speaker 3: saw what he was capable with his legs, right? I mean,
- 2:41Speaker 3: if you listen to NC State, apparently they weren't, they
- 2:43Speaker 3: were shocked that Bo Privula could run the football. I
- 2:46Speaker 3: don't know how, but they were. So yeah, so that's
- 2:49Speaker 3: what he showed his legs against Norfolk State and even against,
- 2:52Speaker 3: you know, in the last game, they were able to
- 2:55Speaker 3: show that he was able to pass the ball against Delaware.
- 2:58Speaker 3: And it was a good showing for them because they
- 3:00Speaker 3: had their starting wide receiver Rico Flores back for at
- 3:03Speaker 3: full health because he missed the first two games with
- 3:06Speaker 3: a hamstring injury and just came back for the West
- 3:09Speaker 3: Virginia game, but didn't have as many snaps. So you
- 3:11Speaker 3: have a starting receiver back and you saw those two
- 3:13Speaker 3: connect a lot. And what Rico Flores did was he
- 3:17Speaker 3: opened up things for Cam Courtney, for Jaquan Gibson, for
- 3:20Speaker 3: Deshaun Martin. So that highlighted Bo Pribula's passing. Because that's
- 3:25Speaker 3: always been a question mark for Bo Pribula coming in
- 3:28Speaker 3: because of how Missouri ran their offense last year. They
- 3:31Speaker 3: highlighted so much of the run game, but we never
- 3:33Speaker 3: saw Bo Pribula in those passing situations. And even now,
- 3:37Speaker 3: one of the questions you still have is can he
- 3:39Speaker 3: do that under pressure, right? Virginia has a really good
- 3:42Speaker 3: O-line offensively. But Florida State remember Jamari Taylor from last year.
- 3:46Speaker 3: He was a really good pass blocker. He really was
- 3:50Speaker 3: good at picking up the blitz. They haven't had a
- 3:52Speaker 3: guy in that. And the way Virginia runs their offense,
- 3:55Speaker 3: they run two running back sets and two tight end sets.
- 3:58Speaker 3: And those guys are crucial in the pass blocking and
- 4:01Speaker 3: also run blocking. But specifically the pass blocking, we're talking
- 4:03Speaker 3: about Bo Pribula. And in West Virginia, they didn't do
- 4:06Speaker 3: very well with that. And that caused Bo Pribula to
- 4:09Speaker 3: be under pressure a lot. And sometimes the timing was off.
- 4:12Speaker 3: So that's the key that I want to watch against
- 4:15Speaker 3: Florida State is because he's going to face a team
- 4:17Speaker 3: that could put some pressure on him. I know Florida
- 4:20Speaker 3: State's been up and down on defense, but still, that's
- 4:22Speaker 3: still a question mark for him. And I know UVA
- 4:25Speaker 3: has been really working with him to not just go
- 4:27Speaker 3: automatically for the run, to try to go through your
- 4:30Speaker 3: progressions and wait for your wide receivers to get separation
- 4:33Speaker 3: because you do have a really solid line.
- 4:36Speaker 2: Yeah. Florida State.
- 4:38Speaker 1: from my perspective has not been good enough in the
- 4:41Speaker 1: past rush. They were a little bit better this weekend,
- 4:43Speaker 1: but you're kind of considering the opponent in being central Arkansas. Uh,
- 4:47Speaker 1: I felt like Keelan Russell had all day to, to
- 4:50Speaker 1: get through progressions and get through reads and was able
- 4:52Speaker 1: to do pretty well.
- 4:53Speaker 3: Shoot.
- 4:53Speaker 1: I thought Kevin Jennings had the same, same kind of benefit. Uh,
- 4:57Speaker 1: when SMU came to town, And then really even New
- 4:59Speaker 1: Mexico State's quarterback ended up going, I think, 10 for
- 5:03Speaker 1: 13 on third down because we just could not get home.
- 5:07Speaker 1: And that is a definite concern of mine, especially with
- 5:11Speaker 1: UVA last year. I was in Charlottesville for the game
- 5:14Speaker 1: and I'm still a little scarred. But UVA last year
- 5:18Speaker 1: felt like they kind of exposed Florida State. They were
- 5:20Speaker 1: certainly the first team of seven to beat them. But
- 5:23Speaker 1: they kind of exposed Florida State in the fact that
- 5:25Speaker 1: our linebackers can't cover And if I see mesh one
- 5:28Speaker 1: more time, which I'm sure I'll see it plenty of
- 5:30Speaker 1: times on, on Saturday and it'll give me more nightmares,
- 5:33Speaker 1: but that feels like the, the part of Florida state's
- 5:36Speaker 1: game that if they can't get home, I don't know
- 5:39Speaker 1: how many deep shots UVA will take in this game,
- 5:42Speaker 1: but I don't know how many of they need to,
- 5:44Speaker 1: if they can continue to kind of work in the
- 5:46Speaker 1: middle of the field where Florida state is really, really weak.
- 5:48Speaker 2: And Kevin Jennings saw some success. Keelan Russell.
- 5:51Speaker 1: No, I was able to kind of find whatever he
- 5:53Speaker 1: wanted in that second half. I feel like that's kind
- 5:56Speaker 1: of your plan of attack. If your UVA is, man,
- 5:59Speaker 1: until Florida State shows they can stop it, which it's
- 6:01Speaker 1: been about a year since that game last year, why
- 6:05Speaker 1: go away from it? FSU fans, UVA fans, if you

- 6:31Speaker 1: hall for their support. Now back to the interview.
- 6:33Speaker 3: Yeah. I mean, I'm shocked that Virginia didn't utilize that
- 6:36Speaker 3: against West Virginia, to be honest, that was something I
- 6:38Speaker 3: was kind of expecting to see more of them playing
- 6:41Speaker 3: that way. Um, they do miss cameras. Uh, he was
- 6:44Speaker 3: a very pivotal part of the offense last year because
- 6:47Speaker 3: of their pre snap motions. And they haven't really done
- 6:50Speaker 3: that as much this year. So I think Cam Courtney
- 6:54Speaker 3: coming out and being more confident in the last game,
- 6:56Speaker 3: that was kind of his game where he had two touchdowns.
- 6:58Speaker 3: He had that 52 yarder touchdown that he took a
- 7:01Speaker 3: screen all the way to the house after two good
- 7:02Speaker 3: blocks from the wide receivers. And I think that's what
- 7:05Speaker 3: they want to see from Cam Courtney. He was inconsistent
- 7:07Speaker 3: the last few years. So that's who, if you're going
- 7:09Speaker 3: to try to target in the middle of the field,
- 7:11Speaker 3: it'll be Cam Courtney or Jake Juan Gibson. Those are
- 7:13Speaker 3: the guys that can go into space, but also Dakota Tweedy.
- 7:16Speaker 3: Dakota Tweedy is their tight end. And he's kind of,
- 7:20Speaker 3: I don't want to say he's not as quick as
- 7:21Speaker 3: he was last year after his injury, but he's still
- 7:23Speaker 3: trying to get back to that game conditioning from after
- 7:25Speaker 3: from last year. And I think he's the guy that
- 7:27Speaker 3: also will be a mismatch problem for Florida State in
- 7:31Speaker 3: the middle.
- 7:32Speaker 1: Over under on this game is 51 and a half,
- 7:34Speaker 1: which I don't go super deep into the betting lines
- 7:37Speaker 1: of games, but it feels low to me knowing what
- 7:41Speaker 1: we saw last year. And also just knowing what the
- 7:45Speaker 1: strengths of, you know, if you call it a strength,
- 7:48Speaker 1: like Florida state's offense show that they could go on
- 7:50Speaker 1: the road and put up 36 points in Tuscaloosa. I
- 7:53Speaker 1: would think that their defense will struggle against this UVA offense.
- 7:57Speaker 1: And that may lead this to be a little bit
- 7:59Speaker 1: higher scoring, but But looking at UVA's defense, you struggled
- 8:04Speaker 1: against a team that can run the ball well in
- 8:06Speaker 1: West Virginia. I think Florida State, for all of its problems,
- 8:09Speaker 1: has two really good running backs in Croma and then
- 8:12Speaker 1: Wisner back there with Singleton injured. Daniels' legs could be
- 8:16Speaker 1: a factor as well, though he's not shown a propensity
- 8:19Speaker 1: to run a ton.
- 8:19Speaker 2: He certainly can move around at times. And then they've
- 8:22Speaker 2: got good wideouts.
- 8:23Speaker 1: Now, the offensive line is a question, but thoughts on
- 8:26Speaker 1: Virginia defending against West what may be a talented offense
- 8:32Speaker 1: in certain spots?
- 8:33Speaker 3: Yeah, that's actually my biggest question when I was looking
- 8:36Speaker 3: at this matchup is because the Virginia defense you saw
- 8:39Speaker 3: against NC State was fast. It was physical. I mean,
- 8:43Speaker 3: they didn't give NC State any sort of time to
- 8:46Speaker 3: do anything. They didn't have a hundred yards of offense.
- 8:48Speaker 3: So CJ Bailey really struggled in that game. So That
- 8:52Speaker 3: defense is very different to the defense we saw against
- 8:55Speaker 3: West Virginia. And again, I mentioned Jason Hammond's injury. That
- 8:58Speaker 3: kind of threw things off a little bit because you
- 9:00Speaker 3: have Darren Henry Young, who was in their third down
- 9:02Speaker 3: defensive tackle for their speed packages. Now he's coming in
- 9:05Speaker 3: and replacing Jason Hammond, who was one of their best receivers.
- 9:08Speaker 3: guys to kind of penetrate and put pressure up front,
- 9:11Speaker 3: especially in those run situations. So you take out Jason Hammond,
- 9:14Speaker 3: you move Darren Henry Young there. They were able to
- 9:16Speaker 3: get Kazem Moore because of the new rule. They got
- 9:20Speaker 3: extra eligibility because of a court case in Kentucky. So
- 9:22Speaker 3: he came back, but he was an edge rusher last year.
- 9:25Speaker 3: Now he's moving inside as well. So those were kind
- 9:28Speaker 3: of questions that I had on this defense is can
- 9:30Speaker 3: they get enough pressure up top? Because they haven't been
- 9:32Speaker 3: able to get home as much to the quarterback. And
- 9:36Speaker 3: then the only thing is they have Cam Robinson back.
- 9:39Speaker 3: He didn't play against Florida state consistently last year. So
- 9:42Speaker 3: he will be back. And, um, He's a really good
- 9:46Speaker 3: guy to put pressure. Now, with Cam Robinson fully healthy,
- 9:50Speaker 3: I expect him to be kind of moved a little
- 9:51Speaker 3: bit more forward and he's going to be adding into
- 9:53Speaker 3: a couple of those pressure situations. And he actually was
- 9:56Speaker 3: one of the ones that had the best pass rush
- 9:58Speaker 3: grade against for profile focus. against Delaware. So I can
- 10:01Speaker 3: see Virginia using them. My thing is UVA secondary against
- 10:05Speaker 3: West Virginia. Yeah. They did not have a great game.
- 10:09Speaker 3: I mean, West Virginia was able to, I don't know
- 10:11Speaker 3: if they did something unexpectedly, because their wide receiver was
- 10:17Speaker 3: wide open in that game. I guess they just sold
- 10:19Speaker 3: themselves and they were going to kind of stop the run,
- 10:21Speaker 3: but then West Virginia attacked and went on offense as
- 10:25Speaker 3: far as the passing game. That was the main struggle
- 10:27Speaker 3: for them. And against Delaware, I mean, their starting quarterback,
- 10:31Speaker 3: who was a good passer, left in the second quarter,
- 10:35Speaker 3: if I remember correctly. for an injury so we didn't
- 10:37Speaker 3: really see them getting you know some passing and we
- 10:40Speaker 3: didn't see them really do much there I mean they
- 10:42Speaker 3: were playing their third guys by the time the third
- 10:44Speaker 3: quarter came around but that's my question there can Brandon
- 10:47Speaker 3: Hillman who had a stellar start to the season kind
- 10:50Speaker 3: of add to his takeaways his interceptions can he be
- 10:53Speaker 3: the one that's be more aggressive right because Devin Neal
- 10:55Speaker 3: was such a big part last year and Jason Brevard
- 10:57Speaker 3: when they played against Florida State those guys aren't there
- 10:59Speaker 3: anymore so you're looking for those guys to stop. So
- 11:03Speaker 3: if it's the Virginia defense from the first game, this
- 11:05Speaker 3: could be a lower score game. And I would take
- 11:07Speaker 3: that bet. But if those, that defense kind of shows
- 11:10Speaker 3: a little bit of what we saw in West Virginia,
- 11:12Speaker 3: this could be a close, close game and it could
- 11:15Speaker 3: be a high scoring game.
- 11:16Speaker 1: Yeah. I, I wonder how much just, and you kind
- 11:19Speaker 1: of alluded to this, but just the threat of Hawkins,
- 11:22Speaker 1: his legs, it was, I mean, he had 120 yards rushing.
- 11:26Speaker 2: He threw the ball.
- 11:27Speaker 1: He was 19 yards per completion. A lot of explosives in,
- 11:31Speaker 1: in that game. He was certainly finding it downfield. Ashton,
- 11:34Speaker 1: I think can move, but certainly not to the level
- 11:37Speaker 1: of Hawkins, right? Like Hawkins is closer to like a
- 11:40Speaker 1: Tommy Castellanos. You saw last year who admittedly, I think
- 11:43Speaker 1: it was a little bit banged up in that game
- 11:44Speaker 1: had gotten nicked the week prior. But I don't think Daniels,
- 11:49Speaker 1: I don't think they'll ask him to move quite like that.
- 11:52Speaker 1: But I do think he's probably, at his best, a
- 11:55Speaker 1: slightly better passer. I mean, at the end of the day,
- 11:57Speaker 1: he went out and threw for 377 yards on the
- 12:00Speaker 1: road in Tuscaloosa. You don't do that without having some ability. Like,
- 12:05Speaker 1: you know, you're not doing that to Bama. Now, Florida
- 12:08Speaker 1: State saw, you know, the run was dead, so they
- 12:10Speaker 1: had to throw the ball more. It took them a
- 12:12Speaker 1: lot of completions to get there. But they certainly can
- 12:14Speaker 1: beat you downfield at times. Deuce Robinson, I think, is
- 12:17Speaker 1: one of the better wide receivers in this conference. I
- 12:19Speaker 1: think Makai Danzy is really good. Jayvon Boggs has kind
- 12:22Speaker 1: of broken out, transferred from UCF last year. No, I'm sorry.
- 12:26Speaker 1: He was a recruit that flipped at the end of
- 12:28Speaker 1: signing day. So I do think that they have the
- 12:32Speaker 1: weapons to– be competitive against a UVA defense. My biggest
- 12:37Speaker 1: question mark is the offensive line. They, um, they have
- 12:41Speaker 1: not done a good job in my opinion, again, last
- 12:43Speaker 1: week is, is kind of an anomaly because you're playing
- 12:45Speaker 1: central Arkansas, but they didn't, they haven't done a great
- 12:48Speaker 1: job of, of protecting Daniels. Um, they, it's the weirdest, uh,
- 12:54Speaker 1: combined stat that you can find Florida state is one
- 12:57Speaker 1: of the highest in the country when it comes to
- 12:59Speaker 1: pressures allowed. And they're also one of the highest in
- 13:03Speaker 1: the country when it comes to the quarterback holding onto
- 13:06Speaker 1: the ball too long, which is a wild thing to
- 13:08Speaker 1: think about because both when the pressure is good or,
- 13:13Speaker 1: you know, he's getting sacked or getting hurried and throwing
- 13:15Speaker 1: it away. When the pressure is not able to get home,
- 13:18Speaker 1: he's holding onto the ball too long, which is a
- 13:20Speaker 1: terrible combo to have.
- 13:21Speaker 2: Like they're kind of bad on both ends of it.
- 13:23Speaker 1: So I think that matchup of, and we know this,
- 13:25Speaker 1: like all games are decided in the trenches, but that
- 13:28Speaker 1: matchup of FSU's O-line trying to give Daniels time, if
- 13:32Speaker 1: he has time, I think the offense can.
- 13:34Speaker 2: Score 28, 31, 34 points, whatever it is.
- 13:37Speaker 1: If he doesn't have time, I really struggle to see
- 13:39Speaker 1: Florida State being able to continuously move the ball effectively.
- 13:44Speaker 1: It'll come down to a lot of shot plays. Following
- 13:48Speaker 1: that up, I do like our running back. I think
- 13:50Speaker 1: Guzman Kroma, could be one of the better running backs
- 13:52Speaker 1: in the conference, in the league.
- 13:55Speaker 2: Thoughts on UVA's run defense?
- 13:57Speaker 1: Because that is a place that Florida State at times
- 13:59Speaker 1: has certainly seen success this year.
- 14:02Speaker 3: Yeah, I think, again, Jason Hammond was, I keep pointing
- 14:05Speaker 3: to Jason Hammond, but because of his loss and that depth,
- 14:08Speaker 3: because Virginia relies on depth on D-line. If you remember, well, again,
- 14:11Speaker 3: last year, the way they play their D-line has a
- 14:13Speaker 3: lot of substitutions and they're average about Let's see, Jameer
- 14:16Speaker 3: Carter last year only had, what, 29 snaps in the
- 14:19Speaker 3: game against Florida State, and it went to how many overtimes? Yeah.
- 14:23Speaker 3: So that was a depth and D-line that they rely
- 14:26Speaker 3: on last year. That's why they were so good late
- 14:28Speaker 3: in the game, because there were guys that were fresh.
- 14:30Speaker 3: When you take out Jason Hammond, you take out Zion Wilson,
- 14:33Speaker 3: who didn't get his eligibility waiver, and they couldn't replace him.
- 14:37Speaker 3: Those are things that you're looking at when you look
- 14:40Speaker 3: at run defense. Now, the good news is Cam Robinson
- 14:42Speaker 3: is back fully healthy. And you have Maddox Marcellus, a
- 14:45Speaker 3: South Florida guy who's been at Virginia now for a year.
- 14:48Speaker 3: He's really used to it. And he had a great
- 14:50Speaker 3: game against Delaware. He's very solid in run defense. I
- 14:54Speaker 3: think with those two, I think they've done a better
- 14:57Speaker 3: job there. And plus with Donovan Platt, who's kind of
- 15:00Speaker 3: taken over that Jason Prevard role from last year in
- 15:02Speaker 3: that Spur role, he's also done a good job there
- 15:05Speaker 3: kind of moving forward. And I know he's a corner,
- 15:07Speaker 3: but Jacoby Henderson... is actually been a pretty solid coming
- 15:11Speaker 3: up front and also helping in that run deep. That
- 15:13Speaker 3: was kind of his role in West Virginia. And he
- 15:15Speaker 3: didn't grade too badly considering what the game was for
- 15:18Speaker 3: that defense. He did actually a solid job for his assignment.
- 15:22Speaker 3: I think I want to point that out. Like a
- 15:23Speaker 3: lot of people look at pro football focus, but when
- 15:25Speaker 3: you look at his assignment and what he was meant
- 15:27Speaker 3: to do in certain plays, he was technically doing his job.
- 15:30Speaker 3: So he is actually something that the way John Radzinski
- 15:33Speaker 3: kind of figures out what they do with their DBs
- 15:36Speaker 3: because they play five. So they're, kind of moving forward
- 15:39Speaker 3: a little bit. And I think they do a good
- 15:41Speaker 3: job in that role. And I guess West Virginia, they
- 15:44Speaker 3: just sold out and they were just trying to defend
- 15:47Speaker 3: the run because they knew what Hawkins can do. So
- 15:49Speaker 3: I don't know if that situation kind of plays out here,
- 15:50Speaker 3: like you said, but I think their run defense is
- 15:53Speaker 3: relatively solid. Even, you know, against West Virginia, their running
- 15:58Speaker 3: back wasn't as successful. It was pretty much Hawkins. That was,
- 16:00Speaker 3: that was a game that Hawkins just did what he
- 16:03Speaker 3: wanted against Virginia. Um, and you have a guy, what
- 16:07Speaker 3: I think it's interesting with Virginia, their third down packages
- 16:11Speaker 3: in those situations, when even in short yardage situations, the
- 16:15Speaker 3: way they kind of change how they look and having
- 16:18Speaker 3: a guy like Nana on you kind of comes from
- 16:21Speaker 3: the other side. He's probably one of their best pass pressures. He,
- 16:24Speaker 3: you move him on the outside and then you move
- 16:27Speaker 3: two guys that are really quick in the middle of
- 16:29Speaker 3: cuisine more. And sometimes you have Darren Henry young and
- 16:31Speaker 3: that kind of changes the dynamics a little bit too. So.
- 16:34Speaker 3: Virginia is pretty solid on the run defense. Again, for me,
- 16:37Speaker 3: the issue for Virginia is one that depth on the
- 16:43Speaker 3: inside of the interior. And because those guys aren't getting
- 16:47Speaker 3: the pressure up front, I feel like you can kind
- 16:51Speaker 3: of get some success in the passing game that will
- 16:53Speaker 3: open up your run. So I think that's my thing
- 16:57Speaker 3: is if they can't do what they need to do
- 16:59Speaker 3: up front, then you're going to automatically open up that
- 17:03Speaker 3: run because they're going to have to figure out how
- 17:06Speaker 3: to stop Florida State in the passing game.
- 17:08Speaker 1: We talked about this at the very beginning, but we'll
- 17:11Speaker 1: loop back around to it.
- 17:12Speaker 2: UVA, a favorite in this game. I think it's close.
- 17:15Speaker 1: I think it's like two and a half points, so
- 17:16Speaker 1: it's not a huge spread. But on a neutral field,
- 17:19Speaker 1: that's Vegas telling you maybe this would be a five-point game.
- 17:22Speaker 2: At home, maybe that's seven or eight, right?
- 17:24Speaker 1: So saying that UVA is the better team here, despite
- 17:28Speaker 1: going on the road into Doak Campbell Stadium, It's a
- 17:30Speaker 1: weird time at Florida State. You know, they like they
- 17:34Speaker 1: I don't know if you're coming down for the game
- 17:35Speaker 1: or not, but they they will boo when when the
- 17:37Speaker 1: head coaches announced. In fact, last week, Florida State immediately
- 17:41Speaker 1: started playing music after Mike Norvell was announced to try
- 17:43Speaker 1: and drown some of that out when you're playing Central
- 17:46Speaker 1: Arkansas and it's family weekend and parents weekend. Then when
- 17:50Speaker 1: you've got to do that, it's certainly a. a weird spot, uh,
- 17:53Speaker 1: for the fan base to be in. But I will
- 17:55Speaker 1: say they, the fans do a good job of they,
- 17:58Speaker 1: they don't blue boo the players much. You know, they're,
- 18:00Speaker 1: they're not happy with the administration. They're not happy with
- 18:02Speaker 1: the coaching staff. They want change. Um, but it's a
- 18:06Speaker 1: place that still gets loud on third downs. And if
- 18:08Speaker 1: the game is competitive, I expect the crowd to, to
- 18:10Speaker 1: stick around. Um, how do you think UVA handles and,
- 18:13Speaker 1: and as, as Tony talked about this a little bit,
- 18:15Speaker 1: just handling, going on the road, being expected to win.
- 18:20Speaker 1: going into a place that's like Doak Campbell, I often think, man,
- 18:23Speaker 1: Florida State and Clemson and Miami, they don't get the
- 18:27Speaker 1: benefit of when they're down, teams don't take them lightly.
- 18:30Speaker 1: Like there are times in the ACC where maybe you
- 18:32Speaker 1: take Wake Forest lightly or maybe you take Syracuse lightly.
- 18:36Speaker 1: Even when Florida State's not good, that's still a logo
- 18:39Speaker 1: that these kids grew up remembering being really good. And
- 18:41Speaker 1: I don't think Florida State, Clemson, and Miami get that benefit.
- 18:44Speaker 1: And so just thoughts around how Virginia handles an opponent
- 18:49Speaker 1: like this, because obviously when they went on a neutral
- 18:51Speaker 1: side against West Virginia, to go back to that, it
- 18:53Speaker 1: didn't work out great, but just handling the moment is
- 18:56Speaker 1: maybe the, the idea.
- 18:57Speaker 3: Yeah. They, uh, Virginia hates Charlotte for right now. They,
- 19:00Speaker 3: they hate the stadium, but no, actually, uh, we are
- 19:03Speaker 3: speaking to Tony Elliott. Um, actually after we record this,
- 19:06Speaker 3: that he only talks on Tuesday, but funny enough, after
- 19:08Speaker 3: the Delaware game, he actually spoke about Florida state. Um,
- 19:12Speaker 3: because he said he has huge respect to the Florida
- 19:14Speaker 3: state program. He joked that he was happy. It wasn't
- 19:17Speaker 3: a night game because he said he remember playing Tallahassee
- 19:20Speaker 3: don't Campbell at night. And it was always such an
- 19:22Speaker 3: electric environment. Um, And he made a point by saying
- 19:25Speaker 3: in his career in the ACC, you have to go
- 19:29Speaker 3: through Tallahassee in order to win the ACC. He made
- 19:32Speaker 3: a point to saying that Florida State is still a
- 19:35Speaker 3: great program and it's hard to win in Tallahassee. He
- 19:40Speaker 3: went and talked about two minutes about this game already
- 19:44Speaker 3: after Delaware. So I think there's a huge respect for
- 19:47Speaker 3: the program. He said it doesn't matter if they're having
- 19:49Speaker 3: a down year or not. It's still a tough game
- 19:51Speaker 3: for them and they're treating it as such. And that's
- 19:54Speaker 3: something that even the team is talking about now as
- 19:57Speaker 3: well is, you know, players were saying that they understand
- 20:01Speaker 3: the magnitude of this game because for them, they play
- 20:05Speaker 3: at SMU in a few weeks as well. So they
- 20:07Speaker 3: understand that if they stumble against Florida State, their chances
- 20:13Speaker 3: at an ACC championship game appearance again, and going back
- 20:16Speaker 3: to Charlotte, dies down a lot because they do have
- 20:19Speaker 3: that trip to SMU in about two, three weeks. So again,
- 20:24Speaker 3: for them, they understand that this is such an important
- 20:26Speaker 3: game in the bigger picture for them. But they also
- 20:28Speaker 3: know that this is a team that should be respected.
- 20:32Speaker 3: I mean, they really think that this offense for Florida
- 20:35Speaker 3: State could cause them some issues. So Again, there's a
- 20:38Speaker 3: lot of respect from the UVA staff.
- 20:41Speaker 1: Just as an outsider, I'll get this and then we'll
- 20:44Speaker 1: wrap up and go. But as an outsider, obviously I
- 20:46Speaker 1: talked about just how it's such a weird time at
- 20:50Speaker 1: Florida State. What's the outsider's perspective on Mike Norvell and
- 20:54Speaker 1: just the situation there from you personally?
- 20:56Speaker 3: For me, it's definitely, it's very interesting to see that
- 21:03Speaker 3: because like in any other situation, I know there's other
- 21:05Speaker 3: things going on financials and all that stuff. But for me,
- 21:09Speaker 3: like the hot seat has been pretty hot since last year.
- 21:12Speaker 3: So it was just seeing this continuous hot seat for
- 21:16Speaker 3: Mike Norvell and the Florida State program and just kind
- 21:18Speaker 3: of continuing on as someone from Florida too. So I've
- 21:23Speaker 3: seen this Florida State program at its highest. So it's
- 21:27Speaker 3: definitely very different. Even when talking to recruits, like I,
- 21:32Speaker 3: it's very different talking about Florida State now than it
- 21:34Speaker 3: was maybe because you do get questions of the future
- 21:38Speaker 3: of the coaching, what's going on. So you do see
- 21:42Speaker 3: that now, you know, I cover recruiting on the side
- 21:43Speaker 3: for Virginia. So I do talk to guys and you
- 21:46Speaker 3: do have that question. It was something that even Tony
- 21:48Speaker 3: Elliott had to deal with two years ago, right? The
- 21:52Speaker 3: thing is like, am I going to be going to
- 21:55Speaker 3: play for the coach that I'm being recruited for. So
- 21:58Speaker 3: it's definitely interesting. And the way college football works now,
- 22:02Speaker 3: you have to kind of make a decision so early
- 22:04Speaker 3: because it's not, you're going to affect everything down the way.
- 22:06Speaker 3: So it's definitely interesting how everything's being, just as an outsider,
- 22:10Speaker 3: you're like, okay, is this the game that will decide
- 22:13Speaker 3: the future here for Florida State?
- 22:15Speaker 2: Yeah, I think so.
- 22:18Speaker 1: Ultimately, I don't think anything happened Sunday, but I do
- 22:20Speaker 1: think it it will have a large impact on, on
- 22:23Speaker 1: what happens. Now the cake might already be baked, you know,
- 22:26Speaker 1: but winning this could move that down the road a
- 22:29Speaker 1: little bit.
- 22:29Speaker 2: You still have Clemson coming to town.
- 22:31Speaker 1: You should go, you know, on the road and play
- 22:33Speaker 1: at pit on a Friday night, Louisville on a Friday night.
- 22:36Speaker 1: Miami is, is certainly looks like they're in a different
- 22:38Speaker 1: weight class right now. NC state comes to town. That's
- 22:41Speaker 1: certainly a winnable game. Boston college is a road game
- 22:44Speaker 1: that Florida hasn't won a road game in like 1100
- 22:46Speaker 1: days or something at this point.
- 22:48Speaker 2: So it's, Yeah.
- 22:48Speaker 1: Like it's, it is daunting. Uh, but UVA could maybe
- 22:53Speaker 1: bring about a stay of execution. If Florida state could
- 22:55Speaker 1: find a way to win.
- 22:56Speaker 2: It, uh, really early in the week.
- 22:58Speaker 1: Do you have a, even if you don't have a
- 22:59Speaker 1: full prediction, do you have a, a lean on this
- 23:01Speaker 1: one or what do you think happens on Saturday?
- 23:03Speaker 3: Yeah, I think Virginia, I give the edge to Virginia
- 23:07Speaker 3: right now in this early part of the season, I'm
- 23:09Speaker 3: giving an edge to Virginia in a lot of these
- 23:11Speaker 3: games that are close because of their veteran experience, especially
- 23:14Speaker 3: in the trenches on the old line. If they give
- 23:16Speaker 3: Bo Pribula time in the pocket to develop a passing
- 23:20Speaker 3: game and you give time for them to run the
- 23:23Speaker 3: football like they did against NC State, I mean, I'm
- 23:25Speaker 3: going to give them the edge. Because even against West Virginia,
- 23:28Speaker 3: although the defense didn't give them enough stops, the offense
- 23:31Speaker 3: did start moving the ball pretty effectively after they kind
- 23:35Speaker 3: of got into the rhythm. So I'm giving the edge
- 23:37Speaker 3: to Virginia because I think Virginia's offense can take advantage
- 23:41Speaker 3: of Florida State's defense.
- 23:43Speaker 2: Awesome. Where can people follow you?
- 23:45Speaker 1: What do you have coming this week as you continue
- 23:47Speaker 1: to preview this game and then wrap it up and
- 23:49Speaker 1: everything else that'll go on?
- 23:51Speaker 3: Yeah, sure. You can find me on wahoos247. com. I'm an
- 23:54Speaker 3: at Jackie friend underscore, uh, today on Tuesday, Tony Elliott
- 23:58Speaker 3: will be speaking. So we'll have more updates on everything
- 24:01Speaker 3: that's going on injury wise for Virginia, if there's anything
- 24:03Speaker 3: developing there, and then I'll have all like player interviews.
- 24:06Speaker 3: We're talking to a couple of players that were there
- 24:08Speaker 3: last year against Florida State. We're also talking to guys
- 24:12Speaker 3: that are from Florida who obviously have a different type
- 24:15Speaker 3: of angle and different type of experience playing Florida State.
- 24:18Speaker 3: So all that's coming on Wahoos 24-7.
- 24:20Speaker 2: Awesome. Thank you so much for taking a few minutes today.
- 24:22Speaker 2: Good luck this weekend.
- 24:24Speaker 3: Thank you.
