- 0:48slash Radio Detectives. Well. Today's episode is brought to you by the financial
- 0:52support of our listeners, and our listener support campaign continues, so I do
- 0:57encourage you to support the show at support dot Great Attacktives Net. During this
- 1:02special series of programs running through the first part of September, we will be
- 1:10focusing on listener support and in addition to the normal thank you gift of access
- 1:14to our premium site, which we do with all donations of seven dollars or
- 1:18more, with all donations of twenty dollars or more, I'll send a digital
- 1:22copy of my ebook all I needed to know I'll learned from Colombo. In
- 1:26addition to that, I will send you one additional gift based on donation size
- 1:30at the twenty dollars level. One thing we have available are some great radio
- 1:37dramas from the Colonial Radio Theater and a consistent favorite with our listeners through the
- 1:42years has been their dramatizations of the early Perry Mason stories. They've done the
- 1:48first five Perry Mason novels and adapted them into ninety minute stories. They're wonderfully
- 1:57done. I enjoyed each one of them, and you can have your pick
- 2:01starting with the velvet clause. That's the first one for for a donation of
- 2:07twenty dollars and at the fifty and one hundred dollars level. We also have
- 2:14gift certificates to Radio archives dot com. It's just a great sight. Was
- 2:21so much there in terms of old time radio. They have episodes of Let
- 2:24George Do It that we weren't able to play on this program that were syndicated
- 2:30in Canada on sets one, two, and four of they're Let George Do
- 2:34It sets. Plus they have just a lot of great radio dramas in high
- 2:38fidelity audio. It's really a luxury when you listen to it, because I
- 2:43can listen to load of mid quality radio programs all the time, but it's
- 2:49something special when I listen to their sets. They do a good job of
- 2:53just making it sound like you're in the room with the actors. In Addison
- 2:55They've got a whole lot of other things. They've added pulp fiction ebooks and
- 3:01audio books of old pulp fiction toddles like Doc Savage and so. Those gift
- 3:07certificates to Radio Warcoms dot COM's available at the fifty and one hundred dollars levels.
- 3:13But now let's get into today's episode of Yours Truly Johnny Doller The Fathom
- 3:19five Matter from Hollywood. It's time now for Johnny Dollar, Ralph Steedler,
- 3:27Johnny Della Liability. Oh hi, am Ralph? What's on your mind?
- 3:30Poetry? You? Philisine? The Bard's immortal words? Which words full fathom
- 3:36five? Thy father? Lies of his bones are Carl's made? And those
- 3:39those are pearls that were re ign. What's the case, Ralph Robbery?
- 3:44A pearl necklace? Life insurance seventy five thousand dollars worth of bones down on
- 3:49the bottom of the deep blue sea, or so they say. So,
- 3:52who say the insurance wife, the insurance best friend. Oh, they're quite
- 3:55positive about it, which you're not? Is that in, Johnny? If
- 3:59I'm going to be stuck for seventy five gees, at least I had to
- 4:01get the straight dope. Shouldn't I all right, I'll get it for you.
- 4:03Give me the who and where it happened in Miami Beach check with the
- 4:08d's office there. The insured was a man named William Marky, and the
- 4:12beneficiary his wife, poor wretch. How you're biased, Ralph. Sure,
- 4:15I'm paying alimony. So look it over, Johnny, and keep in touch
- 4:27tonight and every weekday night. Bob Bailey and the Transcribed Adventures of the Man
- 4:30with the Action Packed Expenser out America's Fabulous Freelance Insurance Investigator as t Lee Johnny
- 4:36Dollar from Special Investigator Johnny Dollar to the home Office Delta Liability Hertford, Connecticut.
- 4:56The following is an accounting of expended yours during my investigation of the Fathom
- 5:00five matter Item one one hundred and forty three dollars and forty cents transportation tips
- 5:08and Incidental's Hartford to Miami. Purpose of assignment aside from a chance to get
- 5:12a look at the sun, to check into the death of one William Marky,
- 5:15or to find out if there was a death and how it happened,
- 5:19and where was the body and if not, why not and if so how,
- 5:24or rather to determine well anyway, the deputy investigator from the DA's office,
- 5:29a man named Barney Wilson, was at least as confused as I was,
- 5:31and he'd had a two day head start. Now we're going on assumption,
- 5:36of course the man is dead, but legally, you understand the fact
- 5:41hasn't yet been established, meaning exactly what mister Wilson was pretty strong evidence,
- 5:46but no corpus delictai, not so far. Anyway, maybe you'd better start
- 5:49at the beginning, and that would be where mister Donna, how much do
- 5:55you know about the case, Well, very little. The dead man,
- 6:00if he is dead, was named William Marky. He was forty six years
- 6:03old, owner of a consulting engineering firm in New York. He'd been married
- 6:08to his present wife for three years. Her age is thirty, and she's
- 6:12the beneficiary of his insurance and of my dad. A charming and lovely young
- 6:15woman. They've been on here for about a month and three days ago Markey
- 6:19was killed or allegedly killed in an accident, drowned as I understand it,
- 6:25when a fishing launch sank a mile or two off shore. And then but
- 6:29you can take it from there, mister Wilson. Now your responsibility in the
- 6:32case is primarily to the insurance company, Is that right, mister Donna and
- 6:35Charlie? Not primarily? Why? What do you mean? And it would
- 6:40be to the company's advantage. If Markey's death were not legally established, they
- 6:45wouldn't have to pay the claim. If that's what you mean, then it's
- 6:47reasonable to dispose, since the whole case is a pretty vague at present,
- 6:51that your efforts will be devoted to creating doubts as to whether Markeys really did
- 6:56Mister Wilson, I think it's reasonable to suppose that I can't very well answer
- 7:00your questions without knowing exactly what has happened. All right, then, briefly,
- 7:05this is it. Apparently Markey came down here to bid on a construction
- 7:10job manufacturing plant. We didn't get the job, but he stayed on.
- 7:15He and his wife and the young fellow that was with him. What a
- 7:17young fellow name of Danny Haynes. He worked for Markey, a draftsman or
- 7:21engineer, evidently a personal friend of the Markeys. The three of them took
- 7:27the house down the beach south and spent all the time together night clebn one
- 7:30thing and another I see anyhow, well, three days ago, Markey and
- 7:35Young Haynes went out fishing together. Hired a charter boat, a small cabin
- 7:40cruiser named the Fathom five, and headed south Long Coast, working the offshore
- 7:45banks. Whose idea was the trip Markeys, according to Young Haynes. In
- 7:50fact, all the rest of the story is according to Haines. Nobody else
- 7:55saw what happened, and what did happen well, Haines says, they anchored
- 7:59off the reef and both of'em fished from the dinghy for a while.
- 8:01Then Marky decided he'd go back to the cruiser and fix some breakfast. Haines
- 8:07put him aboard and took the dinghy out alone. He says he fished along
- 8:11the reef for about thirty minutes before he looked back and saw the cruiser was
- 8:15a fire. It was nearly a mile away, according to his story,
- 8:18and by the time he got back, the boat was a pillar of flame.
- 8:22He didn't see any sign of marking, no, he says not.
- 8:26He couldn't get aboard because of the flames, and a few minutes later the
- 8:30cruiser sank. No one else saw it. There were no other boats around,
- 8:33no it was early morning and there weren't many others out. It had
- 8:37rained during the night, and there was a fairly heavy fog. They're only
- 8:41a mile and a half or so off shore, so Haines rowed in with
- 8:43the dinghy and reported it. Tell me what was the depth of the ocean
- 8:48where the cruiser sank. Oh, only about fifty feet. I've got a
- 8:52salvage company working out to raise it, to get a diver down. Yes,
- 8:54but he didn't find out much. He couldn't get inside the hole.
- 9:00That's about the size of it. Hum m m. It is until they
- 9:03get that cruiser rays so we can take a look at it. And of
- 9:05course it may not tell us a thing. What about the currents along the
- 9:09reef where that boat went down, Oh, they're pretty bad, strong and
- 9:13erratic. A body could be carried through the reefs and on out to see
- 9:16you'll never be found. Well, I was thinking more of the possibility of
- 9:20a good swimmer getting into shore. You said they were anchored only a mile
- 9:24and a half out. Yes, well, it's possible, but not very
- 9:30probable. You'd have been seen by Haines or somebody else. There was a
- 9:33heavy fog, wasn't there fairly heavy and of course Haines could be lying.
- 9:37Maybe he did see him. I said it was possible, But that's not
- 9:41the line I'm planning to take, mister Doll. I'm sewing yet. They'll
- 9:46bring that hull to the surface some time tomorrow, or maybe we'll have some
- 9:48evidence. Then maybe Marky's body'll turn up in the next forty eight hours.
- 9:54And if not, then, mister Dolla, I will petition the probate court
- 9:58to declare him legally. Did I suppose you've got some reason for all this
- 10:01rush? Yes? I want the fact of death established in order to file
- 10:07a murder charge. Danny Hanes, who else? It's the old old story,
- 10:11isn't it. Two men go out and only one comes back unwitnessed accident.
- 10:16Nothing new about it. No, No, that's never been an easy
- 10:18one to prove. Well, it'll be a lot tougher a year from now
- 10:20if you people put up a fight and force the decision up to the superior
- 10:24court. Suppose Haines himself. I wish you'd try the next thing to an
- 10:28admission of guilt. Oh, missus Markey, she has legal status in the
- 10:31case. She could do it, but you won't. You're probably right,
- 10:35she wouldn't be likely to throw away seventy five thousand dollars. Well, I
- 10:41can't tell you what we'll do yet, mister Wilson. I'll have to look
- 10:43around first, talk to the people involved. Get my feet on the ground.
- 10:46Fine, would you just do that? He I'll give you the addresses.
- 10:50Missus Marky is still at the beach house. Young Haynes has moved into
- 10:54a hotel near there. All right, thanks? Say how did the three
- 11:00of them get along during the month they've been here? Luck peas in the
- 11:03pod? From all appearances, of course, what was going on behind the
- 11:07scenes might have been another story. Usually. I think that's where we'll find
- 11:13the motive. Not that Missus markey encourage changed at all. She's a fine
- 11:16woman, I know, and she's beautiful, and this is the South.
- 11:20How's that so long, mister Wilson. I'll keep in touch. Expense account
- 11:28Item two, three dollars and thirty five cents Telegram to Hertford requesting an investigation
- 11:33of the market firm's financial status, both currently and over the past three years,
- 11:37and a similar check of Marky's personal financial status. Item three, four
- 11:41dollars and ten cents taxi to the Pompado Beach Hotel to talk with the DA's
- 11:45prime suspect, Danny Haynes. Look, mister Dollar, I've been over the
- 11:50whole thing with the police a half a dozen times. I'd still like to
- 11:54ask a few questions. If you don't mind. They've got the whole story
- 11:56all I know about it. They had a stenographer to take it down.
- 11:58Why don't you go them with your questions? Maybe I got different questions.
- 12:01I told him everything I know about it. Look, Danny, you don't
- 12:03have to talk to me, but if you're smart, you will. Why
- 12:07so because the police already have their minds made up, or at least Bartie
- 12:11Wilson has sure he's out to prove I killed mister Markey. Well, look,
- 12:16my mind isn't made up yet, so you can't lose anything by talking
- 12:18to me, unless, of course, you did kill him. It happened
- 12:22exactly the way I told him. All right, what do you want to
- 12:26know? How long did you work for Markey? Two years? You get
- 12:28along with him? All right? Sure there was a good job, no
- 12:31complaints. You got to be pretty close personal friends. I understand. Well.
- 12:35I used to go to their apartment in New York once or twice a
- 12:37week for dinner drinks. And then the three of you came down here together
- 12:39on a vacation. It wasn't a vacation. Mister Markey came down to bid
- 12:43on a job. Did he need you along for that? Well, he
- 12:46thought there might be some sketches or plans to draw up and were there.
- 12:50Well, no, as it turned out, they weren't necessary. Funny Marky
- 12:54wouldn't know that ahead of time, being an engineer. Well, actually it
- 12:58was sort of Edna's gestion of missus Markey. I mean, I see,
- 13:03yeah, no, I see now. Look, don't get the idea there's
- 13:07been anything between us. She's been swell to me. She's well, she's
- 13:11just wonderful. That's all right, all right. So the three of you
- 13:15came down on business and within a few days the job contract was awarded to
- 13:18another firm, but you still stayed on for three more weeks. That was
- 13:20Marky's idea. I don't know why exactly. I know he'd counted a lot
- 13:24on getting that job, But I was getting a free vacation. Why should
- 13:28I argue? So I love you, adjust relaxed and lived it up.
- 13:31Yeah, that's about it, mister Marky too, no apparent worries on his
- 13:33mind. Well, he was moody sometimes went off by himself, but that
- 13:39wasn't too unusual. He was like that quite a lot. He and his
- 13:43wife seem to be getting along hard sure as far as I noticed. Why,
- 13:46well, let's talk about that accent for a minute. Danny. Whose
- 13:50idea was it to go on the fishing trip? Mister Marky's. He woke
- 13:54me up at five in the morning, said he'd already phoned and hired the
- 13:56boat, the Fathom five. Yeah, the same one we'd had a couple
- 13:58of times before. Well, I wasn't much for it. It was missing
- 14:03out with a heavy fog, but he was real hot on the idea,
- 14:05and I couldn't very well argue he was the boss. Was missus Markey up
- 14:09when you left? No, but she knew we were going. She'd packed
- 14:11the lunch. I guess they talked about it the night before, all right.
- 14:15She took the boat out then and followed the reef south. And what
- 14:16happened, Well, we anchored as close as we could get to the reef
- 14:20and went out in the dinghy for about an hour. No luck at all,
- 14:24then, mister Marky decided he'd go back on board and fix something to
- 14:26eat. I let him off and then rowed back along the reef. I
- 14:30figured, as long as I had had to come, I might as well
- 14:31try for a striker to at least and a while after that, I looked
- 14:35back and saw the cruiser was on fire. Was it still foggy then?
- 14:37Yeah, about the same. I could just see the glow. I couldn't
- 14:41even be sure what it was until I get close. I tried to get
- 14:43on board, but the flames were too high. I kept yelling, but
- 14:46there was nobody around, and you didn't see or hear any sign of mark
- 14:50No. I guess he was already dead. Then not more than five minutes
- 14:52later, the cruiser sank. Danny, do you have any theory as to
- 14:58what caused the fire? Well, it was a hot plate on board,
- 15:03a gasoline pressure rig. It was an old one in pretty bad shape.
- 15:05We talked about it before. I think it may have leaked into the bulkheads
- 15:09and the bills, and when mister Marky went to light it to fix breakfast,
- 15:13the whole boat just went up in flames. Let's see. Tell me
- 15:16something, Danny. Do you think Marky could have committed suicide. Suicide?
- 15:20Why for what reason? Oh? Maybe losing that contract you said it was
- 15:26pretty important to him. Or maybe he thought he was losing his wife.
- 15:30What do you mean, Well, maybe he misinterpreted your friendship with her.
- 15:33Dan, You're crazy. You're in love with her, aren't you? That's
- 15:35my business. I told you there was nothing between us, all right,
- 15:39But didn't Marky know that. Look you're the same age she is, and
- 15:41he was fifteen years older. A man like that might get to wondering.
- 15:43Knock it off, Dollar, nobody's private life is going to be dragged into
- 15:46this. You better stop and think, Danny while you still got time.
- 15:52A defendant and a murder trial doesn't have any private life, Johnny Dollar.
- 16:15Bonnie Wilson, mister Dollar, Special deputy with the DA's office. I understand
- 16:19you talk to Danny Haynes. You've got a good grave mind, mister Wilson,
- 16:22Oh, tolerable. Well what do you think? Well, I'll go
- 16:26about sixty five. He hasn't murdered anybody. Oh, well, that's close
- 16:30to even money, So you're not too sure. No, I'm not too
- 16:33sure. But then I'm not even sure yet that Marky is dead. Remember,
- 16:37well, maybe we can settle that question this season. What do you
- 16:41mean? The salvage boys have finally got grapple lines on that boat. They
- 16:45figure to bring it up to the service. Around eight o'clock, I'm going
- 16:48out in one of the Harbor launchers. You'd like to come along. My
- 16:52company's got a seventy five grand stake and they're sure i'd like to come along.
- 16:55All right, you meet me at Harbor Police headquarters at seven thirty.
- 16:57I'll be there good. I'll introduce you to the late William Markey. Somehow
- 17:04I started doubt that, mister Wilson. From Special Investigator Johnny Dollar to the
- 17:18home Office Delta Liability, Hartford, Connecticut assignment the FEDOM five matter location,
- 17:23Miami, Florida expense account continued, Item six three dollars and eighty five cents
- 17:33taxi fair to the Marquis Beach house occupied for the past three days now by
- 17:37his wife since William Markey's accidental death. According to all reports, a very
- 17:41beautiful woman. The reports were correct, won't you command, mister Dollar?
- 17:47Thank you come this way. I've been practically living in here in the study
- 17:53since I just haven't had the heart to even look at the rest of the
- 17:56house. Yes, I imagine it's been quite a shock for you, missus
- 18:00Markey, Yes, terrible. No one knows sit down with thank you.
- 18:07I really don't know very much about these matters. If there are papers to
- 18:11sign, maybe I should have a lawyer so that won't be necessary for the
- 18:14present. There's nothing to sign. But aren't you with the insurance company.
- 18:18I'm working for them at the moment as a special investigator. I'm to supply
- 18:22them with a full report of your husband's accident. They have to have that
- 18:26before they can do anything about paying off the policy. Where couldn't the police
- 18:29give you all that? And there's a mister Wilson I think his name is
- 18:32who with the I've talked to mister Wilson. He's cooperating in every way possible,
- 18:36But some of the details I have to get from you. Have you
- 18:40talked with Danny Haynes? Yes, Well, didn't he tell you what happened?
- 18:42He gave me a statement, yes, but only covering the details he
- 18:45actually knew about. Well, I'm sure there's nothing I can add, mister
- 18:49do I wasn't even there, as you know, of course, I know,
- 18:52missus Marky I'll get all of those details elsewhere. Then I don't see
- 18:56why you come out. I'd like to know a few things about your husband,
- 19:02things you know better than anybody else, his actions and behavior during the
- 19:07last few weeks, his mental attitude. I see you think maybe he committed
- 19:14suicide. Is that it I don't think anything. I'm just trying to find
- 19:17out. But that's what you're driving at. Suicide. It's a possibility,
- 19:19of course, And of course your company isn't liable. I suppose if it's
- 19:22suicide, it's still be liable, but only to the extent of twenty five
- 19:25thousand dollars under the particular terms of the policy, not seventy five thousand.
- 19:30I see. Is that all, mister Dollar, I don't think you do.
- 19:33See. Look, I'm not claiming it with suicide. I have no
- 19:37reason to think it was. But these questions are going to be raised by
- 19:41the Claims Board when they meet to consider settlement, and they're not going to
- 19:45pay out any money until they have the answers. So that's why I'm here,
- 19:48missus Marky, to get those answers ahead of time. Now you can
- 19:52help or you can hinder, but I think you ought to realize that you'll
- 19:55be mainly hindering yourself. It was not suicide. Bill wasn't that kind.
- 20:00You didn't know him. I resent your imprecation, mister Dollar. He'd never
- 20:03do a thing like that, I said, I have no reason to believe
- 20:07that he did. Please forgive me. I guess I'm sort of living in
- 20:15a state of shock. I'm not like this really suspicious belligerent. Well,
- 20:19sure, I understand, and I'm sorry to have to bother you this way,
- 20:22but there are certain questions. I know these things have to be done.
- 20:25It's all right. Would you like a drink, mister Dollar, not
- 20:29unless you're having one? Yes, I think I would like something that case,
- 20:33I'll have a scotch on the rocks. Please, oh here, let
- 20:34me fix it. Thank you? Make mine the same. I guess it
- 20:40was the mention of suicide that set me off. Bill and I were married
- 20:44for three years. We were completely happy, every minute of it. Nobody
- 20:48in the world had less reason than Bill to do a thing like that.
- 20:51What about financial problems? None that I knew about. Did you work before
- 20:56your marriage, missus Marky, I was an entertainer chorus. Yes, I
- 21:02suppose that gives you the usual impression. Do I seem like a visiting fireman?
- 21:07I just thought you might have been a dancer, because you carry yourself
- 21:11so well, lithe and graceful. Well, I've been away from it for
- 21:17quite some time. It doesn't show. Here's your drink, thank you.
- 21:22Maybe it'll help me relax a little. I think it might tell me,
- 21:25missus Marky, how did your husband and young Haynes get along? Well,
- 21:29that should be obvious. We brought him down here with us, had him
- 21:30living here in the house for a month. But I understood that was primarily
- 21:36your idea. Who said that? Did you suggest bringing Haines along? Or
- 21:40was it your husband? I might have, I don't remember how it came
- 21:42up now, but Bill was all for it. Otherwise he'd have put his
- 21:45foot down any possibility that he resented Haines's presence but kept it to himself,
- 21:51of course not Why should he? I don't know. Well, if you're
- 21:53trying to imply something, I'm just asking. I understood your husband had spells
- 21:59of brooding during the last few weeks, and I was trying to find out
- 22:02the reason for it. If he did, I'm sure I didn't notice it.
- 22:04What are Danny Haynes's feelings towards you. I think you're pretty insulting.
- 22:11I wasn't intending to be well, what would you call it? Just another
- 22:14routine question. I wasn't meaning to imply that you encourage him in any way.
- 22:18I certainly didn't. But he's young, impetuous, you're very attractive.
- 22:22Maybe he cooked up crazy notions without any encouragement. He thought of me as
- 22:25a friend, that's all. No attitudes on his part that your husband might
- 22:27have misinterpreted. I don't believe I care to answer any more questions like these,
- 22:32mister Dollar. Look, I'm not just asking them for my own pleasure.
- 22:34Missus Marky, I'd a lot rather not ask them, but I've got
- 22:38a job to do well. I fail to see why it's necessary to probe
- 22:41into our private life. I don't tell you why your husband supposedly died out
- 22:47there beyond the surf when a cruiser burned and sank. Do you mean supposedly
- 22:51his body hasn't been recovered so at present, the evidence of his death is
- 22:53purely circumstantial. In fact, there isn't much evidence one way or another.
- 22:57Who could possibly doubt it? The insurance company will doubt it, Missus Markey,
- 23:02and they'll hold up processing any claim for payment until one of two things
- 23:04happens. Until I turn up sufficient proof of death to convince them, or
- 23:08until a court declares your husband legally dead. I didn't. Arnie Wilson from
- 23:12the DA's office, for reasons of his own, is going to file for
- 23:15an immediate court decision. I'm pretty sure of that. But as things stand
- 23:18now, my company will fight it, and with no more evidence than Wilson
- 23:22has, they'll be able to fight it successfully. What all those questions?
- 23:26What was the point? What were you driving at? Your husband's death had
- 23:29the result from one of three possible causes one an accident, two suicide,
- 23:33three murder murder, but there was there was no one with him except do
- 23:42you mean Danny? That's one possibility, one out of three. No.
- 23:47I have no reason at the moment to give it any more weight than the
- 23:49other two. But there is one thing certain, Missus Markey, and view
- 23:53of the circumstances, not one set of insurance is going to be paid until
- 23:56one of those causes is proved. What can I do? I don't know
- 24:00anything about it. Maybe you don't, or maybe there's something you've forgotten don't
- 24:03think is important or something you haven't wanted to talk about. I don't know,
- 24:07of course, but it might be worth thinking about. It was nearly
- 24:15dark when I left the house, and I wouldn't have noticed the man standing
- 24:18under a palm tree by the driveway if he hadn't made a sudden move to
- 24:22get out of sight. Then when I walked toward him, he scurried out
- 24:25of the drive and slipped into a car parked of the street. I could
- 24:30see it was an old model, but I couldn't identify the make. I
- 24:33caught the last three numbers on the license plate before it disappeared around a bend.
- 24:37I couldn't quite figure it. It might have been Haines or some Ghouli
- 24:41swindler who was scared off when he saw the widow wasn't alone. The numbers
- 24:45were six four to two expense account item seven three dollars and seventy five cents.
- 24:56Taxi back to my hotel. I'dam eight six dollars in a quarter dinner
- 24:59and incident there A nine am nine a dollar and forty cents taxi again to
- 25:03the waterfront headquarters of the Harbor Police. Thirty minutes later, I was in
- 25:07a police launch with Deputy Agent Parney Wilson, several miles down the coast,
- 25:11skimming across the water toward a bright cluster of spotlights where a salvage barge was
- 25:15working into the night to raise the burned hulk of the charter cruiser Fathom five.
- 25:18You still got your mind set the same way, mister Dollond. What
- 25:22way was that that there hasn't been any death, there any murder? Oh,
- 25:26come now, mister Wilson, you're mistaking an honest, scientific skepticism for
- 25:30a set of mind. Well that's very pretty, mister Dollar. What does
- 25:33it mean. Well, I haven't taken any definite position yet, but I've
- 25:37got to see more evidence before i'll consider proof of debt to be established without
- 25:41a question. That means you'll file a demurr against declaration by the courts.
- 25:45Not up to me, it's up to the company. But I can tell
- 25:47you right now that if you petition, they'll move to blocket. You have
- 25:49no real evidence, mister Wilson. I'm getting it though. Piece by piece.
- 25:53The sea is starting to give up its pray. Mister Dollan, what
- 25:56do you mean the boys found his shoe late to south, washed up in
- 26:00the surf, just about way you'd expect to find it if it had been
- 26:03carried in by the current identifiable from the same New York shop that Markey's other
- 26:08shoes came from, same size, same stole. Well it's something, all
- 26:12right, but it's still not conclusive. For he asked, if Markey walks
- 26:15up and tells you he's dead, No, I guess I'd settle for just
- 26:19seeing him that way. Oh, by the way, I wonder if you
- 26:22could have an auto license check for me, a partial license on a used
- 26:26car Florida plates. The last three numbers are six four to two. Well,
- 26:30I didn't mind take a while with no more than that to go on.
- 26:33Well, I've got an idea that car may have been purchased within the
- 26:34last three weeks or so. Maybe that'll narrow it down. You got an
- 26:37idea, it may mean something. Look, I have no idea at all.
- 26:41I'm just playing the hunches. But it's about time something in this case
- 26:44started meaning something. We edged the launch up the side of the barns,
- 26:52tied up to a stanchion, and climbed on deck. The power winches on
- 26:56the derreks were still grinding away in the sunken hull of the Burn Cruise.
- 26:59It was nearing the surface. A crew of men waited with salvage pontoons,
- 27:03ready to float the supporting cradle into place as soon as the water logged hulk
- 27:07was raised. Wilson and I stood by the rail, watching, not talking,
- 27:11wondering, I suppose what answers the wreck might supply us. With the
- 27:15taut steel cables inched their way slowly up from the depths, and finally the
- 27:19boat itself broke the surface of the water. Then the men moved in with
- 27:26the pontoons. Another crew members dropped the suction holes into the water filled hull
- 27:30and started to pump to empty. Finally the whole thing was high enough so
- 27:37we could see that the cabin and the deck were badly burned almost to start,
- 27:41but strangely enough, the hull itself seemed to be undamaged. Then Wilson
- 27:45and I both noticed something at the same time, a solid column of water
- 27:48spotting from a round hole near the keel of the boat, and we both
- 27:52realized what it meant. Look dollar, look there. Somebody opened the seacocks,
- 27:56somebody left them wide out. One thing certain it wasn't an accident.
- 28:02She was sunk deliberately. That's exactly what I've been trying to tell you right
- 28:04from the store. William Marky was murdered. Now here's our star to tell
- 28:26you about Tomorrow's intriguing episode of this week story Tomorrow, A photograph, a
- 28:30silver cup, a harried widow, and the dead begin to stir with life.
- 28:36Join us, won't you? Yours Truly? Johnny Daller. Yours Truly
- 29:00Johnny Dollar, starring Bob Bailey is transcribed in Hollywood, written by Less Crutchfield,
- 29:06and is produced and directed by Jack Johnstone. Be sure to join us
- 29:10tomorrow night at same time and station for the next exciting episode of Yours Truly,
- 29:15Johnny Dollar. This is Roy Rowan speaking Welcome back. You know,
- 30:22there's a certain attitude where it comes to radio where it's kind of thought of
- 30:30as just kind of a nostalgic, uh trip, but down memory lane lane
- 30:36without a whole lot of oomph to it or any sort of cultural value.
- 30:45And uh, this this episode I found interesting in so many ways because you
- 30:49begin off with with a quote from Shakespeare and then you have that one line
- 30:59where where he where the district attorney talked about the sea giving up its victims,
- 31:07and I'm, you know, I think people would not expect radio characters
- 31:17from the nineteen fifties to talk like that, but there really was I think
- 31:21a certain elegance I think, particularly in this show. And plus, really
- 31:26Bob Bailey just does a great job in those moments that call for every range.
- 31:33And in these two we got to see a really good picture of Johnny
- 31:37Dowler as just the insurance professional when he was talking to the wife who he
- 31:44was talking to the friend. I thought that was, you know, just
- 31:47an incredible job there. So I am really, you know, as always
- 31:52really enjoying these series the second time through with the five parters, and now
- 31:56it's time to turn to listener comments and feedback. Cynthia Lynn Taylor writes,
- 32:02I'm really enjoying these Sherlock holmes from May. The Sherlock is a bit different
- 32:07from the earlier ones, and I really like that no more Sherlock being so
- 32:10down putting of Watson. However, I've always enjoyed the Sherlock's all the Sherlock
- 32:16home stories that I've heard. Loving the five part Johnny Dollers weighing in on
- 32:21the differences between actors for him, I can't honestly tell a huge difference.
- 32:23The five partiers are awesome and their ability for storytelling, the ability to bring
- 32:28out the emotions as in the Valentine series, it almost had me in tears.
- 32:32The thirty minute shows are awesome in that it must have taken a really
- 32:36good writer to get the emotion and story into that small time space. As
- 32:39far as listening to them altogether, that has never bothered me in the least,
- 32:44and I really like how you put them together. But I seem to
- 32:46have a really good memory and emmy unique Thanks Adam for putting this all together.
- 32:52I'm an enjoying spending my summer catching up on all the podcasts that I've
- 32:55missed the last few months. Well, thanks so much, Sinday, and
- 33:00appreciate it. And I hope we've gotten good balance after we went and we
- 33:05switched from Johnny Dollar second to Johnny Dollar First on Fridays. Have not gotten
- 33:12a whole lot of complaints about the arrangement you know we've had We've still had
- 33:17file issues happen every now and again, but no complaints about the arrangement.
- 33:22So I'm glad we've got that going well, and then we have a comment
- 33:27from Pastor Lisa Martin in Boston. Pastor Martin writes, I just found your
- 33:30podcast this past week when I graduated from a BlackBerry to an iPhone for us
- 33:36on my birthday last week August eighth. I've really been enjoying it very much
- 33:40and I'm hooked. I look forward to tuning every in every day. And
- 33:45she also goes ahead and comments, I came on this series starting this past
- 33:49Monday, and I was intrigued. I love Johnny Dollar. The inding was
- 33:52a twist, and that's regarding the uh Quabono matter. So thanks so much,
- 33:59appreciate you listening in, Pastor Martin, and hope you continue to enjoy
- 34:05the series. All right, Well, that will actually do it for today.
- 34:09We will be back tomorrow with the last episode of Mister Moto. Be
- 34:14sure next week, whether you've enjoyed Mister Moto or not, to tune in
- 34:19Tuesday as we'll begin beginning the John J. Malone series with Murder and Mister
