- 0:11Hello, friends. It's Sean here.
- 0:13It's Monday, It's the 17th of March, and it's great to have
- 0:18your company as we begin a new week.
- 0:21We begin this week by finishing off this epic, enormous,
- 0:24gargantuan story of the history of the kings of Judah and
- 0:30Israel. No, not that book that the
- 0:31scripture keeps on referring to. This has been first and 2nd
- 0:35kings. And today we will draw that to
- 0:37an end. And then we're going to dive
- 0:39into the Gospel of John. How fantastic.
- 0:42And that will take us all the way through to Easter.
- 0:45But for today, we are finishing off this story, and this story
- 0:49ends in totality. And then hope the totality will
- 0:54come in the form of the description of the Babylonians
- 0:58destroying the temple. The temple is God's place on
- 1:02earth. This is the centre of everything
- 1:05that that the David and Solomon's construction had
- 1:09built. It was the centrepiece of their
- 1:11nation. So to have the temple destroyed
- 1:15is the absolute full stop saying it is now the end of this era.
- 1:20Their land and their nation is entirely destroyed.
- 1:25But then if you think all the way back to Samuel, you'll
- 1:28remember God making a promise to David that his line would always
- 1:32continue. And so as the audience reads
- 1:35this, they think, well, that was a a big waste of time, that
- 1:39promise. So at the end, they include this
- 1:41little bit of hope that the Davidic line may yet continue
- 1:46even through this trauma of exile.
- 1:49So this is a sad chapter, sad chapter written by someone and
- 1:54for the audience as they were in exile.
- 1:57So this is basically with sadness describing what happened
- 2:02that ended with them being so far away from the promised land.
- 2:06So let us finish this story as we read together Second Kings
- 2:10chapter 25. So on January 15, during the 9th
- 2:25year of Zedekiah's reign, King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon led
- 2:29his entire army against Jerusalem.
- 2:33They surrounded the city and built siege ramps against its
- 2:36walls. Jerusalem was kept under siege
- 2:40until the 11th year of King Zedekiah's reign.
- 2:44By July 18th, in the 11th year of Zedekiah's reign, the famine
- 2:48in the city had become very severe and the last of the food
- 2:52was entirely gone. Then a section of the city wall
- 2:56was broken down. Since the city was surrounded by
- 2:59the Babylonians. The soldiers waited for
- 3:02nightfall and escaped through the gate between the two walls
- 3:05behind the King's garden. Then they headed toward the
- 3:09Jordan Valley, but the Babylonian troops chased the
- 3:12king and overtook him on the plains of Jericho, for his men
- 3:16had all deserted him and scattered.
- 3:19They captured the king and took him to the king of Babylon at
- 3:23Ribla, where they pronounced judgement upon Zedekiah.
- 3:28They made Zedekiah watch as they slaughtered his sons.
- 3:32Then they gouged out Zedekiah's eyes, bound him with bronze
- 3:36chains, and led him away to Babylon.
- 3:41On August 14th of that year, which was the 19th year of King
- 3:45Nebuchadnezzar's reign, Nebuzaridan, the captain of the
- 3:49guard and an official of the Babylonian king, arrived in
- 3:53Jerusalem. He burned down the Temple of the
- 3:57Lord, the royal palace, and all the houses of Jerusalem.
- 4:02He destroyed all the important buildings in the city.
- 4:06Then he supervised the entire Babylonian army as they tore
- 4:10down the walls of Jerusalem on every side.
- 4:14Then Nebu Zaradan, the captain of the guard, took as exiles the
- 4:18rest of the people who remained in the city, the defectors who
- 4:22had declared their allegiance to the king of Babylon, and the
- 4:25rest of the population. But the captain of the guard
- 4:28allowed some of the poorest people to stay behind to care
- 4:32for the vineyards and fields. The Babylonians broke up the
- 4:37bronze pillars in front of the Lord's temple, the bronze water
- 4:41carts, and the great bronze basin called the sea, and they
- 4:45carried all the bronze away to Babylon.
- 4:49They also took all the ash buckets, shovels, lamp,
- 4:52snuffers, ladles, and all the other bronze articles used for
- 4:56making sacrifices at the temple. The captain of the guard also
- 5:00took the incense burners and basins and all the other
- 5:04articles made of pure gold or silver.
- 5:07The weight of the bronze from the two pillars, the sea and the
- 5:11water carts was too great to be measured.
- 5:15These things had been made for the Lord's temple in the days of
- 5:18Solomon. Each of the pillars was 27 feet
- 5:22tall. The bronze capital on top of
- 5:25each pillar was 7 1/2 feet high and was decorated with a network
- 5:30of bronze pomegranates all the way round.
- 5:35Nebu Zaradan, the captain of the guard, took with him as
- 5:38prisoners Soraya, the high priest, Zephaniah, the priest of
- 5:43the second rank, and the three chief gatekeepers.
- 5:47And from among the people still hiding in the city, he took an
- 5:51officer who had been in charge of the Judean army, five of the
- 5:55King's personal advisers, the army commander's chief secretary
- 5:59who was in charge of recruitment, and 60 other
- 6:02citizens. Nebu Zaradan, the captain of the
- 6:06guard, took them all to the king of Babylon at Ribla.
- 6:10And there at Ribla, in the land of Hamath, the king of Babylon
- 6:16had them all put to death. So the people of Judah were sent
- 6:20into exile from their land. Then King Nebuchadnezzar
- 6:25appointed Gedeliah son of Ahykum and grandson of Shafen, as
- 6:30governor over the people he had left in Judah.
- 6:33When all the army commanders and their men learned that the king
- 6:36of Babylon had appointed Gedeliah as governor, they went
- 6:40to see him at Mizpah. These included Ishmael son of
- 6:45Nethaniah, Johanan son of Korea, Saraiah son of Tanhumeth the
- 6:52Netafathite, Jezoniah son of the Makethite, and all their men.
- 6:59Getelaya vowed to them that the Babylonian officials meant them
- 7:02no harm. Don't be afraid of them.
- 7:05Live in the lands and serve the king of Babylon and all will go
- 7:09well for you, he promised. But in mid autumn of that year,
- 7:14Ishmael, son of Nathaniah and grandson of Elishama, who was a
- 7:19member of the royal family, went to Mizpah with 10 men and killed
- 7:25Gedeliah. He also killed all the Judeans
- 7:28and Babylonians who were with him at Mizpah.
- 7:32Then all the people of Judah, from the least to the greatest,
- 7:36as well as the army commanders, fled in panic to Egypt, for they
- 7:41were afraid of what the Babylonians would do to them.
- 7:46In the 37th year of the exile of King Jehoakim of Judah, evil
- 7:51Meridak ascended to the Babylonian throne.
- 7:55He was kind to Jehoikin and released him from prison on
- 7:59April 2nd of that year. He spoke kindly to Jehoikin and
- 8:04gave him a higher place than all the other exiled kings in
- 8:07Babylon. He supplied Jehoikin with new
- 8:10clothes to replace his prison garb and allowed him to dine in
- 8:15the King's presence for the rest of his life.
- 8:19So the king gave him a regular food allowance as long as he
- 8:23lived. Our father, as we hear this
- 8:35story, everything moving inextricably toward disaster for
- 8:41this people, Yet still you end this story with hope.
- 8:46Hope that you remember your promise to your people.
- 8:50Hope that you will restore things at some point in the
- 8:54future. Our Lord, with you there is
- 8:57always hope. Hope in this line of kings that
- 9:02ultimately brings us Jesus, and then Jesus who secures this
- 9:09eternal, unshakable hope that we now have, that through him, His
- 9:15death, his resurrection, everything that he achieved out
- 9:20of love for us, we can call you Father and we can come before
- 9:25you knowing that you accept us with arms open wide, ready to
- 9:30embrace us and draw us into your home forever.
- 9:36Thank you for the decadent kindness of this promise for
- 9:40which we are so grateful. And so we lift you up and we
- 9:44praise you, our wonderful God, our mighty Saviour and our giver
- 9:49of hope. We pray all of this in the name
- 9:52of Jesus, Amen.
