Latest / The Lunch Rush with Trent Condon / Miller and Condon Hour 1 7-29-2025
Transcript
- 0:00All right, good afternoon. Welcome Miller and Condon on a
- 0:03Tuesday. The Iowa Sports Radio Network
- 0:06Ken Miller solo for the next couple of hours.
- 0:08Appreciate you starting your day here in your afternoon rather
- 0:12with me Trent on vacation for the remainder of the week.
- 0:15So I will take you up until 2:00.
- 0:17Turn things over to off the bench.
- 0:20Lucas Strain guiding you in through that one until 5:00.
- 0:23Here's what's coming up on the program here today in 15
- 0:27minutes. We'll do our first of three
- 0:28different segments this this week with my good friend Bama
- 0:32Bob, who talks college football twice weekly during the regular
- 0:35season. But as we usually do it late
- 0:38July and the beginning of August, we take a look at the
- 0:40power conferences as well as the Group of Five.
- 0:43We'll lump those in today. Group of Five and Big 12 will be
- 0:47in focus. We will talk to Bama Bob or I
- 0:49will talk to Bama Bob. Then tomorrow, the Big 10 finish
- 0:52things off with the ACC and the SEC on Thursday, But we will
- 0:58have a look at for the benefit of both Bam and I as much as
- 1:00anything. I'll be perfectly upfront with
- 1:02you. So college football conversation
- 1:04coming up at 12:15. Mitch Holtis is back.
- 1:07His daily Chiefs training camp report some sound today from #15
- 1:11Patrick Mahomes. Mitch joins Trent and I every
- 1:16day during the during training camp for the Chiefs with the
- 1:20exception when they're travelling on the road to A to a
- 1:23preseason game. But Mitch will be here today.
- 1:2612:45 Papa John's in central Iowa.
- 1:29They make this possible. Papa John's Central Iowa
- 1:32sponsors our guest Mitch Holtis coming up here at 12:45 kicking
- 1:38off the second hour of the program and look forward to
- 1:40this. I was you found my Phil Steele.
- 1:44I was going to have an all points bulletin with five O
- 1:47tomorrow. Thank you, Lucas.
- 1:50Phil Steele was missing. It's like the Bible couldn't
- 1:53find it panicking, but I've got it back and Lucas Strain found
- 1:57it for me and I certainly appreciate that.
- 1:59Anyways, where was I? Sam Burnaby, Iowa Cubs is going
- 2:02to join me. He's the general manager.
- 2:04So what I planned on doing this week with Trent being gone,
- 2:08doing a couple of things differently, and I want to talk
- 2:11to old guys in sports, 1 old guy in sports, talking to a couple
- 2:14of other old guys in sports. And today I was going to talk to
- 2:17Sam Burnaby about his, you know, career at the Iowa Cubs.
- 2:20He's in his 42nd year, which is hard to believe you're 42, the
- 2:24general manager of the Iowa Cubs.
- 2:26But obviously the tenor of our conversation is going to at
- 2:31least take AU turn or an about face for a little while.
- 2:34But the passing of Hall of Famer Ryan Sandberg and Sandberg's
- 2:37been in Des Moines multiple times and at SEC now Principal
- 2:41Park over the years. And I know Sam will have some
- 2:44good things to say about not just Sam.
- 2:47I haven't seen anybody that says anything bad about Ryan Sandberg
- 2:50and not just recently, you know, as he is his passing approach,
- 2:55but going back over the years, by all accounts, terrific
- 2:58baseball player and a terrific person off the field.
- 3:00So Sam Burnaby on that. And then his career, what he's
- 3:04seen changed. Was Des Moines ever in jeopardy
- 3:07of losing the Chicago Cubs AAA franchise?
- 3:10I'll ask Sam about that because there were some rumors back in
- 3:13the day that we may have a different tenant down at
- 3:17Principal Park. So Sam Burnaby at at one O 2 by
- 3:21the way, coming up at the same time, or is it?
- 3:24It's Thursday. Bill Fenley's going to join me.
- 3:27Long time women's basketball coach, obviously at Iowa State's
- 3:31and the only coach still in his spot.
- 3:34That actually predated sports talk radio in the state of Iowa,
- 3:37which is bananas to me that year, 1995 when Bill Fenley came
- 3:41aboard. So we'll talk about his career,
- 3:43etcetera. But that's Thursday, Sam Burnaby
- 3:462 day and then Bill Bender, college football.
- 3:48He was at ACC media days. We'll talk college football, not
- 3:52just the ACC, but we'll cover a lot of bases with Bill when he
- 3:56joins me coming up here at about 1:30.
- 3:58Obviously the Brewers and the Cubs game, which really was an
- 4:02entertaining baseball game, at least for the for the most part,
- 4:07but kind of took a turn in the game as well when the Cubs, I
- 4:11believe they were the first ones to make the news public that
- 4:14Ryan Sandberg had passed away yesterday.
- 4:17It seemed like, you know, the, the unfortunately, you kind of
- 4:22could see the tea leaves, right? Read the tea leaves that maybe
- 4:26Ryan Sandberg is, you know, sadly not long for the world
- 4:31when last week we saw John Lester and Carrie Wood.
- 4:37Within the last couple of weeks, both of those former Cubs take
- 4:41the mound and we're and to throw out an opening pitch, the first
- 4:44pitch and did so while wearing Ryan Sandberg's jersey number.
- 4:49So you kind of got a hint there that that's the way it was
- 4:53coming. They did a tribute speech to
- 4:55Ryan Sandberg at the Hall of Fame in Cooperstown this past
- 5:00weekend when the Hall of Fame ceremonies were there.
- 5:02And obviously Sandberg was unable to attend, which
- 5:06obviously he would have as a Hall of Famer if he'd been in
- 5:08perfect health. But you could kind of see the
- 5:11writing on the wall, sadly, you know, you just go back to the
- 5:14beginning of the year when it, when it became public that at
- 5:17least the thought was that he'd beaten cancer, that it was
- 5:21behind him. I mean, he was part of the Cubs
- 5:23convention, the winter event taking place in January in
- 5:26Chicago. Cubs Con I think is what they
- 5:28call it. And Ryan Sandberg was one of the
- 5:30visitors, one of the keynote speakers at the event as
- 5:34recently as January. But sadly, the cancer return, he
- 5:38put out a statement, oh, about 3 weeks ago or so on X just kind
- 5:43of giving us a, an update that unfortunately has been able to
- 5:47make it to Wrigley Field, but he's still watching etcetera,
- 5:50etcetera. Well, sadly, his life came to an
- 5:52end far too young yesterday. But what a terrific player he
- 5:55was and recognized by the Hall of Fame as he should be.
- 5:59So Sam Burnaby will join me today to talk about that.
- 6:02Look forward to it because I'm going to pick Sam's brain as
- 6:05much as anything. 1984 I did not get WGNWGN wasn't a thing in
- 6:11Canada. So I didn't see, you know, the
- 6:13Cubs unless they were playing the Expos because there's no
- 6:16inter league playback in 1984. Remember the team once they got
- 6:20to the playoffs. But you know what?
- 6:22I'm certainly not versed on the maybe one of the best Cubs teams
- 6:25in that era, that 1984 Cubs. And what's ironic about that?
- 6:31And I found this out yesterday from all people from Darren
- 6:34Revelle, who collects everything and he tweeted out loud or do we
- 6:38X out or do we tweet out? We tweet out tickets from what
- 6:42Ryan Sandberg's first game and what his last game were.
- 6:45And what is ironic about this, at least to me, Ryan Sandberg
- 6:51and Harry Carey debuted and retired on the same day.
- 6:58Let me think about that. Iconic broadcaster, Hall of Fame
- 7:02second baseman Ryan Sandberg, both started with the Cubs on
- 7:07the same day and retired with the Cubs on the same day in
- 7:111997. Remarkable.
- 7:13It truly was. So we'll talk about to Sam about
- 7:17those things, etcetera. Coming up here at 1:00 baseball
- 7:20from last night. Look, you got to give the
- 7:23Brewers credit. This is a really good baseball
- 7:25team. Been saying it for a while.
- 7:27Mizuroski looked like he had zero last night, had nothing.
- 7:31The Cubs were pounding him. He had to throw.
- 7:34I think it was over 40 pitches in the first inning, maybe
- 7:36404241 pitches and inning #1 I know Boog and JD were both
- 7:42speculating that he may not even come out for another training.
- 7:45Well, he did. He came out and he got, he
- 7:47figured it out and finished with seven strikeouts.
- 7:50But the story was the other left-hander was the left-hander
- 7:54for the Cubs, and that was Matthew Boyd, who's been
- 7:56phenomenal all year long. I'm not being critical of
- 7:59Matthew Boyd because this team, quite frankly, would not be
- 8:02where they are without Matthew Boyd, who going into last night
- 8:05was 11 and 3. Justin Steele out for the year.
- 8:09All the injuries that they've had him Inaga missing as many
- 8:12weeks as he has missed, tie on missing the pitching staff has
- 8:16been decimated. The one constant was the old
- 8:19guy, the 30 something who finally pitched in the All Star
- 8:22game, had his opportunity and represented the one of the Cubs
- 8:26representatives in the All Star Game for a couple of weeks ago.
- 8:29But for the first time, this was just not the Matthew boy that
- 8:32we're used to. He had not walked more than
- 8:34three batters, I think maybe once this entire year.
- 8:38He walked five Brewers yesterday.
- 8:40But give the Brewers credit. Yelich was terrific in the
- 8:43baseball game. They certainly are a good team
- 8:46and they're not going anywhere. Pat Murphy is a terrific
- 8:49skipper. This is going to be an
- 8:50unbelievable race. I have no idea what the Brewers
- 8:53have done to turn Andrew Vaughn around.
- 8:56You White Sox fans, you saw it with your own two eyes just how
- 8:59bad he was. I thought he's going to be any
- 9:01kind of player when he first broke in a few years ago with
- 9:04the White Sox. And obviously he has not lived
- 9:06up to that, made the trade. A disgruntled pitcher from the
- 9:10Brewers goes over. Savali goes over to with the
- 9:13White Sox and in exchange, Andrew Vaughn, a reclamation
- 9:17project, goes to the Brewers. He spends a little bit of time
- 9:20in AAA and he can't get him out at this at the Major League
- 9:23level. He's been unbelievable.
- 9:25Another home run yesterday. More than that, this is a good
- 9:28baseball team, a really good baseball team.
- 9:30We as baseball fans, I think, are in for a hell of a race
- 9:34between the Brewers and the Cubs as they will battle amongst
- 9:37themselves. I just don't see Cincinnati
- 9:39getting into it. I mean, they could, I guess I I
- 9:42mean, get close to these top two teams.
- 9:45But at the end of the day, it sure seems like it's it's these
- 9:49two and then there's a gap to the Reds and then the, you know,
- 9:54the others finishing up the track.
- 9:56But we shall see where it goes. But Game 2 is tonight and a lot
- 10:00of pressure now on Mr. Ray to come out and throw a pretty good
- 10:04game. I'm not sure Colin Ray has it in
- 10:06him. Quinn Priesler, who he's going
- 10:08to go up against. Priester has been good.
- 10:10Colin Ray has been better than advertised.
- 10:12No one expected the number 5 starter on the Cubs to a have
- 10:16eaten as many innings as he's been asked to do so far this
- 10:19year. But particularly at his age,
- 10:22what, 35 years old? He's 8 and 4 ERA just after just
- 10:26over 5 innings pitch. I'm not sure what how many 102
- 10:31innings pitched already this year.
- 10:33So he'll get TO170180 in all likelihood at least approach
- 10:37those numbers by the end of the regular season.
- 10:40Colin Ray has been terrific. So that's what we've got coming
- 10:43up on the program here today. Bama Bob is going to join me
- 10:46next. We'll take a look at the group
- 10:48of five who does he anticipate coming out and won't hold him to
- 10:51it. We'll have we'll go on record at
- 10:53the end of August as we always do right before week one with
- 10:57our predictions as to who's going to win each conference,
- 10:59etcetera. We'll do that in August, but
- 11:03this is kind of a primer to get both him and I kind of
- 11:07reacclimated to the game with so many changes in the sport over
- 11:11with the NIL etcetera. But that's what's coming up.
- 11:14Bamabob next Big 12 group of five Mitch Holtis 12:45 It's day
- 11:192 of Chiefs training camp reports Papa John Papa John Papa
- 11:23yes, Papa John's in central Iowa sponsors that that comes your
- 11:27way in about those are still tad over 1/2 an hour from now.
- 11:30Miller and Condon underweights Tuesday.
- 11:33Thanks for being with us on the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 11:36Hi, welcome back, Miller and Condon.
- 11:37Iowa Sports Radio Network with you until 2.
- 11:40Lucas Strain comes off the bench from 2:00 until 5.
- 11:44Overtime, Iowa 5 until 6:00. Well, as I mentioned earlier in
- 11:48the program, we're going to spend 3 of the next four days
- 11:51talking to our buddy Bama. Babu joins us twice weekly
- 11:54during the college football season.
- 11:56Monday we recap. Friday we preview.
- 11:58But late in August, early or late in July, early August, we
- 12:01kind of get acclimated back to the sport and we do this every
- 12:04year and this year is no different.
- 12:07Hello Bama, how are you? Hello Kenny, I'm doing great,
- 12:11looking forward to it. Thankfully we don't have Trent
- 12:13on the slopes down today because he gets to rambles.
- 12:16Yeah, yeah, right. Yeah, it's his fault.
- 12:18Yeah, it's his fault exactly. And when then now once we get to
- 12:22I think it's Friday or whatever our last day is a Thursday or
- 12:24Friday, whatever, we'll actually get to spend some time on the
- 12:28ACC because we're that ever reason he hates.
- 12:31That. Right, exactly.
- 12:33Good stuff. Well, Big 12 and Group of five
- 12:36today. Let's save the Big 12 because
- 12:37obviously they'll be what much more more topics to get into in
- 12:42there. Last year, as we know, Boise
- 12:44State prevailed, right? They and they had a phenomenal
- 12:47running back, etcetera and they were a nice team, a nice team.
- 12:50And the Group of five I believe deserves a spot in the College
- 12:53Football Playoff. I think getting more more than
- 12:56one would be kind of an upset, but we'll see how it plays out.
- 13:00Give me a team or two Bama this year.
- 13:02Who is that Group of five team? Is Boise coming back or is there
- 13:06another team that kind of got your eye on?
- 13:09I just, you know, Boise, you always kind of have to put them
- 13:13in there, don't you? I mean, it just seems like they
- 13:15now that they're moving to the PAC 12 next year, along with a
- 13:19bunch of other ones. I just, I think you have to, you
- 13:24have to throw them in no matter where you are.
- 13:26Fresno State's getting a lot of love this year.
- 13:28Yes, they are. It's going to be a really nice,
- 13:32you know, Mountain West game. I don't really know where that
- 13:34game is played, but when those two hook up, I think that's
- 13:37going to be tremendous. You know, I'll throw one out.
- 13:41And this is just crazy from the Mac.
- 13:44Toledo. Yeah, they're good.
- 13:47It seems like every year. And by the way, I saw a post, I
- 13:50put it in on Twitter that whoever wrote that post about
- 13:53the Mac was just brilliant. Scott Van Pelt retweeted that,
- 13:57which which is crazy. He goes, this is Wright Thompson
- 14:00stuff. Anyway, you know, there's,
- 14:02there's just such crazy stuff in that conference.
- 14:04They play it on, you know, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday,
- 14:06pick a night, they'll play a game.
- 14:08They don't care. I'll, I'll just throw Toledo out
- 14:11there. I have no idea.
- 14:12Obviously anything about them. You know, why would you follow
- 14:16closely? Not till November.
- 14:19Yeah, exactly. Not till November, but I think,
- 14:22I think those two you know, Memphis is going to be good.
- 14:24Memphis is Lane, I think are always pretty good.
- 14:28So, you know, but I think it just kind of, for me anyway, not
- 14:32diving too deep, it kind of all starts with Boise.
- 14:35Yeah, I think so. I'm with you.
- 14:36I'm looking at the Boise schedule now in front of me.
- 14:39They do host. They host Fresno State on the
- 14:411st of November. So the final third of the
- 14:45regular season will begin with a game against the boy.
- 14:47Here's a game in the middle of Boise State schedule I didn't
- 14:50realize was on there. How about Saturday, October the
- 14:534th? Off they go to South Bend, Boise
- 14:56State, Notre Dame. That's got a little cache, Bama.
- 14:58It does have some cache and that is one of those that it's it's
- 15:04it's probably bigger for Notre Dame because, you know, let's
- 15:07face it. Well, maybe not.
- 15:08I mean, because if if Boise, Boise could have if you really
- 15:12want to talk about it at large group of five, what Boise State,
- 15:18you know, go undefeated and lose the mountainless championship
- 15:21game for Fresno or whoever. How you going to keep them out
- 15:25if they're going to if they've got to win at South Bend on
- 15:27their resume. So that that is a that's a great
- 15:29game. I mean, I love it being in the
- 15:30in the middle of the season, not one of these neutral site early
- 15:34season. True.
- 15:34Week 5? Yep, Week 5.
- 15:36Right, two playoff teams from last year, right.
- 15:40So I mean yeah, that boy, that's a big game.
- 15:41I hadn't noticed that. Good job out of you.
- 15:43That is a monster non conference game for for Boise or for the
- 15:49group of five in general. NBC will have it.
- 15:51So some good exposure there without a doubt.
- 15:54Absolutely. All right, so I'm with you.
- 15:55I think Tulane is a player obviously the the quarterback
- 16:00Ratzlaf comes over after he's dismissed.
- 16:03We'll see if if that you know how how much that means to that
- 16:06team. I think you can't hurt Memphis.
- 16:12Sure, I, I think it's probably Boise, but let's move on.
- 16:15Let's get to the Big 12. Or at least we think we have a
- 16:17better kind of grasp of what we're going to look at when it
- 16:20comes to the Big 12. So how many teams, when you look
- 16:23at it, I, when I look at the Big 12 Bama, I see a whole bunch of
- 16:26parody. Same as last year, right?
- 16:30We, we could have, I don't know, make four or five teams.
- 16:33I wouldn't be shocked if as many as four or five teams come out
- 16:37victorious in this thing. How many for you?
- 16:41How many can win legitimately win?
- 16:43I've got 5 and I'll I'll even throw and, and so mine are the
- 16:48first of all, I don't think we're going to get a large team
- 16:50out of the Big 12. I just.
- 16:51Don't one bid, OK. Yeah, like last year.
- 16:53I do. I don't think there's enough,
- 16:57you know, cachet in the league, if you will, whatever however
- 17:00you want to put it that there's not great non conference
- 17:03matchups like you just talked about.
- 17:05I will tell you one that's got my attention.
- 17:07I just noticed in a minute, but I think Arizona State, Kansas
- 17:11State, Texas Tech, I think you kind of started really not, you
- 17:13know, not any, you know, breaking news there, if you
- 17:16will. BYUI can't quite put in there
- 17:21because of the quarterback situation.
- 17:23Exactly. Yep, TCU I can put in there
- 17:27because of the court. Hoover, yeah, Trent loves him,
- 17:29by the way. Trent loves.
- 17:30Him. Yeah, I I agree.
- 17:32And you know, I just looked, you know, do you know who their
- 17:34opening game is? Yeah, it's Auburn, right?
- 17:38No, TCU's opener is at Chapel Hill.
- 17:42That is Bill Belichick. You tell my eyes on a football
- 17:45game on a Monday night, right? Yeah, so who?
- 17:49If Hoover goes for 300 and 350 against a Bill Belichick coach
- 17:53defense as as they would say hello, Heisman would say.
- 17:58I mean, he's right in the mix of that is a monster game for that,
- 18:01for the conference. Baylor plays on.
- 18:04Baylor plays on. Baylor that's and that's a great
- 18:07non conference game. We talked about that a little
- 18:09while and they and then Week 2 they go to SMU.
- 18:11So you know, that's that's a pretty that's a salty start
- 18:14right there. But yeah, I think that there how
- 18:18many millions of games are eyeballs are going to be on that
- 18:21game. TCU at North Carolina Monday
- 18:23night for Bill. Standalone game I.
- 18:25Put TCU in there, right? I also put Baylor in and the
- 18:30reason I do that is they get Arizona State and Kansas State
- 18:33at home, right? So you start working at the
- 18:35conference camera. No, they open with Auburn and
- 18:37they go to SMU. That really doesn't matter in
- 18:40terms of conference. It certainly will test them and
- 18:44give them two notches if they could somehow pull those out.
- 18:47But then but then the Arizona State and Kansas State games,
- 18:50who I think are contenders are are at home.
- 18:52They do go to TCU and then you know, down the line.
- 18:54So I those from me, Ritz, Iowa State, I I love Matt Campbell.
- 18:58I just think they lost too much. The receivers.
- 19:01Yeah, everything. I mean really, you know, yeah, I
- 19:05just, I don't know, I, I think that you guys obviously know
- 19:08Iowa State better than me, but I love the Iowa State K State game
- 19:12right out of the chute. I mean, tough one, huge the
- 19:14Monster Conference game, you know, there's other ones down
- 19:17the road, but I for me, Arizona State, Kansas State, Texas Tech,
- 19:22I'll throw TCU and Baylor in there.
- 19:24And but really, I mean, I think I think you know, BYU and Iowa
- 19:29State as as really long shot dark horse.
- 19:32So you've got, I've got one who I think can win the conference
- 19:35you haven't even mentioned and that and it was a disappointing
- 19:38team last year and that's Utah with the with their transfer,
- 19:41with their transfer quarterback comes in from where New Mexico
- 19:45State I want to say. Yeah, I think you're.
- 19:47Right. Dual threat quarterback and
- 19:49really sling it. The Dan Fierce's last name
- 19:52though? Yep.
- 19:53Yeah, Winningham is the coach, right?
- 19:55Could be his last, Could be there's a little noise or
- 20:00talking around that. Yeah, I'll throw Utah.
- 20:02And again, a lot of times in situations like that, you go
- 20:05with coaches, right? When the talent is kind of
- 20:07evenly spread and some teams have a quarterback, some don't,
- 20:10You know, some teams spread on defense, whatever.
- 20:13In a conference like this, you do have to kind of go back to
- 20:15coaches. And that's why I like Kansas
- 20:17State and climbing. But yeah, I mean again.
- 20:20Team under the radar. You're right.
- 20:21Utah from last year, Cam rising, finally gone.
- 20:23They move on from that after a decade.
- 20:25So you know, here we go. To that end, what's that?
- 20:29That's why I have Arizona State travelling to take on Utah's.
- 20:34The best game, the most impactful game potentially in
- 20:37the conference, you know? And that's hard to say that
- 20:39because, you know, I'm going to make a case every single day for
- 20:42the most part leading up to Week 0 when K State and Iowa State
- 20:46collide. Because, yeah, somebody's going
- 20:48to be want to know, that's great.
- 20:49But somebody's going to have the tiebreaker over the other in the
- 20:53head to head. And this is such I think we
- 20:56could have a handful of teams at 7:00 and 2:00 again.
- 20:59When you have 6 teams that can win the conference, you're going
- 21:02to be playing impactful games every week, which is great for
- 21:04you guys with Iowa State being in that conference, right?
- 21:07So they're the teams that you're familiar with in that in in
- 21:09Iowa, you know, are are going to be playing impactful games.
- 21:14You know, it doesn't be honest with you.
- 21:16It doesn't register a lot, you know, in the South, obvious
- 21:19reasons, but you know, for honks like you and me, I mean, we love
- 21:22it, right. So every, I think every week
- 21:24you're going to have you're going to have impactful games.
- 21:25You're right. What happened to Daniels,
- 21:28quarterback at at Kansas? What what has happened to him?
- 21:31Bama, when he burst onto the scene, I thought Jalen Daniels
- 21:34was going to be, I don't know, viewed as one of the best
- 21:37quarterbacks in the conference. And five years later, whatever
- 21:40it is, here he is. I think he's gone backwards,
- 21:43Bama. I think he has, he got hurt, you
- 21:45know, he's had injuries. And so it's hard to blame, you
- 21:49know, guys for that. I mean, I think they were the
- 21:52ones that knocked, memory serves, with two years ago they
- 21:55knocked off. Texas and.
- 21:57You're thinking, wow, and this kids coming back, you know, he's
- 21:59staying. And then last year was just kind
- 22:01of disappointing. And you know, my point, I think
- 22:04he's it's such a tough place to win.
- 22:06They are, they have upgraded, you know, facilities up there, I
- 22:09think. Stadium.
- 22:10Innovation is done right. So, you know, it's just it's
- 22:15hard to win there. I mean, it's really hard to win.
- 22:18And it's a shame really that they can't have done more with
- 22:23what I think is an incredibly talented guy pulling the strings
- 22:27at quarterback. But you're right.
- 22:29It's, you know, we thought, man, after that Texas win, look out
- 22:33because they they were spunky again.
- 22:35They were kind of like Vanderbilt last year.
- 22:36They just knocked off a big and they were, they were just a pest
- 22:39for some other teams. It just hasn't happened and I
- 22:43don't really know why. I mean, injuries are a part of
- 22:45it, but I don't think there's a coaching, is it development?
- 22:47Is it, you know, attitude? You just, you don't know.
- 22:49But yeah, he hasn't. He hasn't progressed like you'd
- 22:52hoped. Let's talk about the defending
- 22:54champs, and that's Arizona State, who came out of nowhere
- 22:57last year and had just a remarkable season.
- 23:00They really did. Obviously scataboo is the is the
- 23:04one piece of that team that's not there.
- 23:05Jordan Tyson, their gifted receiver.
- 23:07He's making some noise and giant.
- 23:09Boy, is he ever man. So they're going to love that.
- 23:12Guy yeah, absolutely will but the quarterback is back Levitt
- 23:17is back Tyson is back they're gifted wide receiver lose a
- 23:20couple of guys on defense, but Arizona State, they're not going
- 23:24to sneak up on anybody everybody knows Kelly Denny Kelly Kenny
- 23:27Dillingham now Yep we're familiar with him we an.
- 23:30Attitude, man. Love it.
- 23:32I love it. He's in your face he's like why
- 23:34not, you know, kind of screw you.
- 23:37You know, we're here, we're not going anywhere.
- 23:38I mean, I love it. And that's always been a
- 23:41program. If when you think about, you
- 23:44know, and I know this is before nil, so nil kind of Trump's
- 23:48everything now. But I always wondered like, why
- 23:50can't you get a young 18 to 20 year old to commit to Tempe, AZ?
- 23:55Because the scenery around there is pretty good if you know where
- 24:00I'm going. So I just, I think that, you
- 24:03know, they, they're putting some money into it now.
- 24:05They've kind of passed Arizona. Oh for sure slapped.
- 24:08Arizona, but yeah, they're they're again, you start with
- 24:14quarterback, you start with coach, you start with
- 24:16experience. That's a tough combination right
- 24:18there. And I know they lost some talent
- 24:20and Scataboo just gave them such a different dimension on offense
- 24:24and yeah, they're going to blind somebody else back there, but
- 24:26he's not going to likely not going to be as good as
- 24:29productive. So they're going to have to
- 24:30adjust, but you know, their their schedule's pretty tough.
- 24:34I mean, they got they go to Baylor, they go to Utah, they go
- 24:37to Ames. Yep.
- 24:38I mean, it's, it's tough there. I don't see Kansas State on that
- 24:41schedule. So they they.
- 24:43They do catch a break there. Yep, the Baylor game, as you
- 24:45mentioned, at Utah, Iowa State and Colorado, the other roadie.
- 24:49Yeah, and there's no BYU, so you know, there's they do catch a
- 24:53little bit of a break, but yeah, I just think it starts with them
- 24:56and that's why I had them, you know, kind of first on my list
- 24:59as the three corner quote. If I got to pick a team, it
- 25:03would probably start with them along with Kansas State and
- 25:06Tech, and then we know we talked about Baylor and TCU.
- 25:08I love Texas Tech Bama. They spent a lot of money.
- 25:11Here's what may hold them back. And and I'm with you.
- 25:14I think Joey McGuire, a, he's got some heat on on his seat
- 25:16this year with the money that they've spent.
- 25:19Have you looked at their schedule, their Rd. games this
- 25:21year? And they get 5 at home, but they
- 25:23go 4 on the road and three of the four in the Big 12 at Utah,
- 25:27at Arizona State, at K State. My God.
- 25:31That's that's what you're exactly right.
- 25:33And I think that's what that could hold them back.
- 25:35And, you know, you look at the end of the year there, Ken, and
- 25:38you know, you look at you say, wow, you know, UCF and then at
- 25:40West Virginia, OK, Scott Frost is back at UCF and Rich
- 25:44Rodriguez is back at West. Yeah, Fairpoint, OK.
- 25:46So now you know, they will probably be, and I say they
- 25:52they're probably better off catching those two at the end of
- 25:54the year because you don't know what the rosters are like and
- 25:56attrition. But I think I think UCF or West
- 25:59Virginia is going to knock somebody off just because of the
- 26:01coaching. I mean, Frost had a hell of a
- 26:03time, as we know, at Nebraska, just did not work out.
- 26:07I think he's better. I don't think he's as good as
- 26:09what he was meant to be or made out to be.
- 26:12His first in the UCF. And I don't think he's as bad as
- 26:15he showed at Nebraska. I think that's a good program
- 26:17for him back down there. He can recruit.
- 26:19He has a style. And then I think, you know,
- 26:21Rodriguez, he's a proven coach. He's kind of like Dan Mullen and
- 26:25Mullen went UNLV. This is just kind of recycling
- 26:27these guys, but he's sort of going home to West Virginia.
- 26:30So, but yeah, you're right that that schedule now they don't
- 26:33play. We're Shiano at Rutgers.
- 26:36Yeah, exactly. Good point.
- 26:37Excellent. You know, with the Arkansas,
- 26:39Pine Bluff, Kent State and Oregon State, that's not going
- 26:42to scare anybody. All three of those games in
- 26:43Lubbock, right? But you're right, they get into
- 26:45the conference so man it gets salty with those three you
- 26:49mentioned. Is there Heisman contender?
- 26:53Obviously whoever wins, it's a quarterback award we believe.
- 26:57I don't know. I don't think that there's a
- 26:59running back that'll wow you this year.
- 27:01So it's a court. Is it as simple as whoever wins
- 27:04the conference and if their quarterbacks say it's Robertson,
- 27:06Baylor finds a way to win or Levitt with with with Arizona
- 27:11State. Maybe Avery Johnson we haven't
- 27:13mentioned. I mean, he disappointed last
- 27:15year. I thought he was going to take
- 27:16the conference by storm after he chased Howard to Ohio State.
- 27:20That worked out well for him, right?
- 27:23Is there Heisman contender? I I don't know about contender.
- 27:28I guess you know, again Levitt, I think because of the name
- 27:31recognition, you know, the success last year, you just look
- 27:36at the the games. I mean, where's he going to have
- 27:38a high profile game, the biggest non conference game it is at
- 27:43Mississippi State. We could, yes, it's the best
- 27:45team, but it is the bottom of the barrel of the estimate,
- 27:48right? And that's why I go back to
- 27:49Hoover, man. I just think that game, if he
- 27:52can build some momentum right coming out off that North
- 27:57Carolina game. Let me get their schedule in
- 27:59front of me. Hang on one second.
- 28:00You could be on to something here.
- 28:01I like what you're thinking. OK, North Carol, you're right.
- 28:06I mean, it's a standalone game. The country will be watching.
- 28:09Everybody goes back to work. Today, it's Bill Belichick.
- 28:11They're not watching for Josh. No, they're watching for Bill
- 28:14Belichick. He lights it up, man.
- 28:16He's, you know, all of a sudden, well, who's just kidding?
- 28:18We're going to pay attention, right?
- 28:19Yeah, and their schedule's not that daunting when it comes to
- 28:22the In fact, I think they catch a break.
- 28:24Sure, they got to go to Arizona State, but Colorado at K State?
- 28:28OK, tough. Baylor at home at West Virginia.
- 28:31Iowa State at home at BYU, No. Quarterback at Houston?
- 28:35No chance. And Cincinnati ended at home.
- 28:38It could be a dark horse team. They could be a dark.
- 28:41HORSE, I mean, SMU, not, you know, out of the ACC.
- 28:44There were a playoff team last year.
- 28:45They got their point. They got two playoff teams
- 28:47back-to-back, right? SMU and then Arizona, they do.
- 28:49Arizona State. Yeah, they do.
- 28:51I mean, you could get, you could build some momentum out of those
- 28:53three, out of those first four games and put yourself on the
- 28:55radar. Yeah, I'm anxious to talk SMU
- 28:58with you when we do the ACC coming up here later on the
- 29:01week. Coach's hot seat?
- 29:03Is it McGuire? It's an Oklahoma State.
- 29:07Is a Gundy. It's got to be Gundy, doesn't
- 29:09it? I mean, how do you you go O and
- 29:119:00 last year and nobody's talking about you on a hot seat?
- 29:14Yeah. Yeah.
- 29:15I mean, I know you've been there two decades.
- 29:17My God. I mean, at what point I don't, I
- 29:21don't, you know, maybe Satterfield, you know, that's
- 29:23just kind of. Yeah, yeah.
- 29:25OK. But.
- 29:27I don't know. I think to me it's got to be
- 29:29Gundy. If if you, if you go out and
- 29:32laid another egg, and I'm not talking about an O and 9 egg,
- 29:35but just a three and six, I'm with you.
- 29:37Whatever. I mean, how do you boy?
- 29:40He's getting paid. I mean, don't you kind of expect
- 29:42more? But I don't know.
- 29:44I just, I think to me it's them. I don't see really anybody else.
- 29:48Well, Bama, go back to when Oklahoma and Texas left and
- 29:51we're trying to find that heir apparent.
- 29:52You know that heavy Ed in the conference, everybody was saying
- 29:55it was it's the Cowboys. It's Oklahoma State, right?
- 29:59They were terrible last year. They they were awful.
- 30:01They were awful. Winless and conference, please.
- 30:04And you know, they had a they had a chain of Dion was getting
- 30:07a lot and you know, God bless him.
- 30:09I mean yesterday, I mean, goodness, you know, good for
- 30:12him. And I'm totally wrong about him
- 30:15on so many fronts. And I'll.
- 30:16I'm with you. You know, you know the you know
- 30:19he was going to leave when his kids left.
- 30:21You know, you know him and you know Shudura and Hunter and you
- 30:24know, I was all sizzle, no steak.
- 30:25And you know, he's done a good job there and he's staying and
- 30:29but God bless him for that, you know, for, for beating it, it
- 30:32seems like anyway. Oklahoma State Week 2 at Oregon.
- 30:36Have fun, yeah? Good.
- 30:37Yeah, that's going to be a, that's a 28 point loss, right.
- 30:41I mean, but. Rushed.
- 30:43Look at that. I mean, I don't know.
- 30:46Yeah, I'm looking at that. And that's that's just not good.
- 30:48No. Alabama tomorrow, 1:30 We'll
- 30:51talk about the Big 10 on Thursday to kick off the second
- 30:55hour. We'll do SEC and ACC.
- 30:58Again, we're not going on record here today.
- 31:00We're just kind of throwing things around, seeing what
- 31:03sticks, and we'll go on record at the just before week #1 as we
- 31:07always do, and then we'll look back at the end of the season
- 31:10and see how bad we actually are. Cool, make fun of ourselves.
- 31:13Absolutely. I'll talk to you more.
- 31:15Have a great rest of your day, Bama.
- 31:16Thanks for doing this for me. Look forward to tomorrow.
- 31:18Thanks buddy. Of course, Ken, always enjoy it
- 31:20pal. Thanks.
- 31:20Good. To talk to you Bama, Bob as
- 31:23check in on the Big 12 and the Group of Five.
- 31:25So many teams can win the Big 12.
- 31:28In my opinion it's TCU team. I'm glad Bama mentioned them.
- 31:32Condon loves the quarterback. He's been talking about Hoover
- 31:34since we started reacquainting ourself with this sport.
- 31:39Avery Johnson, K State. There's a kid who's flying under
- 31:41the radar. This is a massive game Week 0.
- 31:45It truly is. Give me sick of me saying they
- 31:47already are. I know it.
- 31:50The implications are huge. Tiebreaker.
- 31:53Who's got it head to head? Somebody will when the about
- 31:582:30 in the afternoon from Dublin, Ireland on the 23rd of
- 32:01August. Mitch Holtis joins me next.
- 32:03It's Chiefs training camp report day #2 Patrick Kuma home sound
- 32:07coming up. Miller and Condon are on the
- 32:09Iowa Sports Radio Network day #2 training camp reports Kansas
- 32:13City Chiefs, Mitch Holtis, Papa John's sponsors Patrick Mahomes
- 32:18sound coming up. We'll hear from that.
- 32:20Let's get to the play by play voice.
- 32:23He is Mitch Holtis and he joins me.
- 32:25Hello, Mitch, How are you? Well, it has been an interesting
- 32:30day because it has been the grind day.
- 32:34Now people can hate the Chiefs, we can go through all that, but
- 32:39the reason they've been able to be so good in September and
- 32:42December and in January for 12 years are days like the day.
- 32:46This was a brutal day, I don't mind telling you.
- 32:48Heat, humidity, third straight day and pads, 2 long drive
- 32:53drills. Not one, but two.
- 32:55And so 2 hours and 25 minutes. He'll back off tomorrow.
- 33:00But these guys are hurting. But they push through it.
- 33:04And it's it's where your veterans lead the way to say,
- 33:07hey, This is why we win consistently our days like
- 33:09today. We're going to hear from one of
- 33:11those momentarily and one of these guys that you may or may
- 33:14not put him in the spotlight before we run out of training
- 33:17camp, reports Mitchell. Hasn't been a day, I don't think
- 33:20of training camp that on Twitter or X.
- 33:23There's not a Taquan Thornton highlight, just a unbelievable
- 33:28catch. He's down the depth chart of
- 33:30ways, but he's one of those guys that Patrick Mahomes is throwing
- 33:33to that that's going to push for some playing time after he
- 33:37finished the year last year on the Chiefs practice squad.
- 33:40Yeah, we mentioned him. In fact, we just did a podcast
- 33:43not long ago actually, we did a live stream.
- 33:45People can find that archived after they listened to your show
- 33:48today. But yes, and he flashed in the
- 33:53springtime and summer in OTAs, and there's 13 receivers in
- 33:58camp. Now, where Taekwon comes into
- 34:00play is if during a Rice suspension.
- 34:04Now, keep in mind he had two touchdowns.
- 34:06He was a high draft pick of the Patriots.
- 34:08Taekwon Thornton from Baylor, good receiver at Baylor.
- 34:13That was a high pick for New England and played there.
- 34:16Played quite a bit his rookie year.
- 34:17So, yeah, you're on to something.
- 34:19This guy nobody's really thought about, but he would be the 7th
- 34:23wide receiver receiver in a six man slot because the rookie
- 34:28Royals is having an awesome camp and so is Nico.
- 34:31Remigio would be ahead of him, Juju Smith, Schuster, and then
- 34:34the other big three. So.
- 34:36But Thornton is 1. Who's worthy of discussion?
- 34:38I might try to track him down for the last week of our reports
- 34:41just to see where he's at. And the preseason games will be
- 34:43big for Taekwon. Yeah, no doubt.
- 34:46Obviously one of those veterans, Patrick Mahomes, I saw the the
- 34:49no, just the numbers he put up last year.
- 34:52People think he had an off year, right?
- 34:55It's yeah, it's unbelievable. And then what kind of really
- 34:58jumped off when when you put his season record on there, his
- 35:02regular season record, along with his playoff number, regular
- 35:06season 89 and 2317 and four in postseason.
- 35:10I, I think he's, I think he's going to be OK, Mitch.
- 35:14And 17 and two last year. Third in completion.
- 35:17Completion 4th in attempts, 7th in touchdowns and 9th in passing
- 35:23yards. And if he would have played week
- 35:2518, even though he gets that awesome Denver defense, even if
- 35:28he's on average, he's going to be fifth in the league in
- 35:30passing. That's a down year.
- 35:32And then you mentioned his winning totals, which are the
- 35:34best in NFL history for a quarterback in his first seven
- 35:38years as a starter. But there's way more to this
- 35:40kid. I've tried to tell you this and
- 35:42get it across way more to him, way more in the way he connects
- 35:45with his team. And you alluded to it.
- 35:47To push through a day like the day.
- 35:49And is there a Super Bowl hangover?
- 35:51I ain't seeing it, nor is Patrick Mahone.
- 35:54No, it's been awesome. I mean, to see how motivated the
- 35:57guys are, hungry they are and just continue to get better and
- 36:00better. You know, it's been great.
- 36:01Competition, offense, defense. And whenever that's happening
- 36:05and you're getting competition every single day, that's, you
- 36:08know, you're getting better. You're so analytical.
- 36:10What have you put made a priority for this year
- 36:13specifically? Yeah, For me, I mean, it's
- 36:15always footwork stuff and being on time, being in rhythm, depth
- 36:18of routes, stuff like that. And then getting back to
- 36:20attacking downfield. I mean, obviously you want to
- 36:23still stay surgical, you want to stay hitting the right passes.
- 36:25At the same time, you want to be able to have that deep threat
- 36:28and that opens up the entire off there.
- 36:31Save the end of that quote and you can play it later, because
- 36:34there's two things there that's bigger than fans realize. 1.
- 36:38If you attack the back third, you're not forfeiting what he
- 36:43has done the last three to four years.
- 36:45And that is the surgical drives and surgical strikes.
- 36:48Last year, Pat, the average drive for a touchdown Chief led
- 36:51the league in with 6.667 plays per drive.
- 36:55Way different than humming it down there on a jet ship.
- 36:58Wasp. Why is it important?
- 36:59Because he's just learned this. He's he's in his eighth year as
- 37:03a starter and it's like Bobby Witt junior.
- 37:06They hit singles and double s, but you can also hit a three run
- 37:08Homer and I think that's where Pat wants to be with this
- 37:11offense. And he's such a threat when a
- 37:13play breaks down, right? I mean, if it's how many times
- 37:16have you seen he needed twelve, he gets 13 or 14.
- 37:20It's just, it's just dumbfounding how many times he's
- 37:22able to make a play down the sidelines when seemingly there's
- 37:26nothing there just to keep it alive.
- 37:29Devastating to a defense can if you have coordinators that are
- 37:33going, I see it when I watch the video.
- 37:34They throw their hands up like what are we supposed to do?
- 37:36They have the great play called. They got a perfect defense
- 37:38called and yet he the play within a play we call it and
- 37:42he'll make you know, the 13 yards on 3rd and 12th.
- 37:46We've seen guys like Jaden Daniels do it.
- 37:48Look at the play Stroud made against the Chargers in the
- 37:50playoffs, which should have been a 25 yard loss and then Stroud
- 37:53turns out into a back breaking like 40 yard gain.
- 37:56Well, those are the kind of plays when you're off script and
- 37:59off the grid that you you have to do the other.
- 38:02But if you can do that which the homes right now is the
- 38:05valedictorian of those kind of plays, then it becomes
- 38:08devastating. You can ruin a defense for a
- 38:10week. No doubt.
- 38:11Let's not ruin dinner, or dinner does get ruined.
- 38:14Let's make it right. What do we got going on at Papa
- 38:16John's? I got to tell you, dude, I got
- 38:18to. I got to jump into a cold tub
- 38:19myself here. This was wicked today, but when
- 38:22I get when I get settled down here and get some fluid in me,
- 38:24it's going to be a medium cheeseburger pizza 1299.
- 38:27Sounds like tonight a medium cheeseburger pizza 1299.
- 38:31Get ready for the season. Iowa State Fair, all that stuff,
- 38:35man. Papa John's is bringing it.
- 38:36Indeed they are. Who we going to hear from
- 38:38tomorrow? Have you got that planned yet?
- 38:41Just had a chat with him and he was trying to get his breath.
- 38:44The Travis Kelsey, we're going to jump in to why this offseason
- 38:48a little bit different for Kels and many of the others.
- 38:52We'll hit that tomorrow. He certainly looks good on
- 38:54camping camp. Good stuff.
- 38:56Mitch, talk to you tomorrow. Thank you buddy.
- 38:58Thank you, Ken. Yep.
- 38:59Good to talk to you. Mitch Holter's voice, radio
- 39:01voice of the Kansas City Chiefs, the defending AFC champion
- 39:06Kansas City Chiefs. Sam Burnaby is the general
- 39:09manager of the Iowa Cubs. How will he recall?
- 39:11How does he recall Ryan Sandberg?
- 39:13And we'll take a look back at the 42 years he's been at the
- 39:17helm as the GM of the Iowa Cubs, Miller and Con, then Iowa Sports
- 39:22Radio Network.
