- 0:11Hello friends. It's Sean here.
- 0:13It's Wednesday. It's the 25th of September.
- 0:17And boy, am I glad that you have tapped on play because we are
- 0:20just setting out. Not only are we pilgrims on the
- 0:24way up that mountain to Jerusalem, but we are pilgrims
- 0:27heading out of Persia, back to Jerusalem to rebuild.
- 0:35And the beautiful thing about this story is this is not just
- 0:38some folk tale that happened in the imagination of, you know,
- 0:43cultural historians. No, this is the story of actual
- 0:47people like you and me who are being restored to their
- 0:51homeland. This incredible, incredible long
- 0:56dreamt about moment. And so this chapter, chapter 2
- 1:00of Ezra talks about what actually happened the the facts
- 1:05of that. Well, kind of like another
- 1:07exodus back from exile back into their country.
- 1:11So this is going to be a list 2 lists.
- 1:13The 1st is the list of all of those families that headed back
- 1:18and then the second list will speak about the priests who are
- 1:21returning to serve in the temple.
- 1:24So settle yourselves in and as you listen to this, don't get
- 1:28bogged down on my my pronunciation of these names and
- 1:31the names and the numbers, but just hear that this is a real
- 1:36people group. These were people that the God
- 1:39that you and I serve LED back after promising them to restore
- 1:44them to their homeland. He comes good on that promise.
- 1:47So let this story of God's presence and activity in our
- 1:52world wash over you and encourage you that God still is
- 1:56present and active today in our lives.
- 2:00So come with me to the shocker, the very intimidating Ezra
- 2:05chapter 2. Here is the list of the Jewish
- 2:18exiles of the provinces who returned from their captivity.
- 2:22King Nebuchadnezzar had deported them to Babylon, but now they

- 5:01Ono, 725. The citizens of Jericho, 345.
- 5:08The citizens of Senna, 3630. These are the priests who
- 5:15returned from exile the family of Judea through the line of
- 5:19Jesua 973, the family of IMA, 1052, the family of Pashur 1247,
- 5:31the family of Haram 1017. These are the Levites who
- 5:36returned from exile, the families of Jesua and Cadmil,
- 5:41descendants of Hodovaya. 74 the singers of the family of Asaph.
- 5:47128 the gatekeepers of the families of Shalom, Eita,
- 5:53Talmon, Aqab, Hetaita and Shobai. 139 The descendants of
- 6:01the following temple servants returned from exile.
- 6:04Zihar Hassafar, Tabayoth, Keros Sia Pedon Lebanon, Hagabah aqab
- 6:16hagab Shalmai Hanan gidel gehar Raya resin nekada gazam uzza,
- 6:29pasiya, besai, asna munum, nefusum, Bakbak, hakufa, Hahu,
- 6:39Baslath, Mahida, Harsha, Bakos, Sisera, Tama, Naziah and
- 6:48Hatifah. The descendants of these
- 6:51servants of King Solomon returned from exile.
- 6:54Sotai, Hasafarath, Peruda, Jala, Dhakon, Gidel, Shefataya, Hatal,
- 7:04Pogarath, Hazabaim and AMI. In all, the temple servants and
- 7:10the descendants of Solomon's servants numbered 392.
- 7:15Another group returned at this time from the towns of Telmala,
- 7:19Telhasha, Kerab, Adan and IMA. However, they could not prove
- 7:25that they or their families were descendants of Israel.
- 7:28This group included the families of Delaya, Tobiah and Nakoda, a
- 7:33total of 652 people. Three families of priests,
- 7:39Hobiah, Hakos, and Bazalai, also returned.
- 7:42This Barzilai had married a woman who was a descendant of
- 7:46Barzilai of Gilead, and he had taken her family name.
- 7:51They searched for their names in the genealogical records, but
- 7:54they were not found, so they were disqualified from serving
- 7:58as priests. The governor told them not to
- 8:00eat the priest's share of food from the sacrifices until a
- 8:04priest could consult the Lord about the matter by using the
- 8:07Urim and Thummim, the sacred lots.
- 8:11So a total of 42,360 people returned to Judah, in addition
- 8:17to 7337 servants and 200 singers, both men and women.
- 8:24They took with them 736 horses, 245 mules, 435 camels and 6720
- 8:34donkeys. When they arrived at the Temple
- 8:36of the Lord in Jerusalem, some of the family leaders made
- 8:40voluntary offerings toward the rebuilding of God's Temple on
- 8:43its original site, and each leader gave as much as he could.
- 8:48The total of their gifts came to 61,000 gold coins, 6250 lbs of
- 8:55silver and 100 robes for the priests.
- 8:59So the priests, the Levites, the singers, the gatekeepers, the
- 9:03temple servants, and some of the common people settled in
- 9:07villages near Jerusalem. The rest of the people return to
- 9:11their own towns throughout Israel.
- 9:23Lord, thank you for your word, Your word that details Your
- 9:29faithfulness to Your promises, that these families, once
- 9:34removed from their land because of their disobedience to you,
- 9:38are each restored to their place, just as You promised they
- 9:42would with the blessing of the ruler.
- 9:47Lord, thank You that You remember Your promises to us and
- 9:52that even though it feels sometimes like we are exiled far
- 9:56from where we ought to be or where we feel like we should be,
- 10:01You are faithful to us. And Lord, we look forward to
- 10:06that time when this life of exile in this strange and
- 10:10unforgiving place that we live this world, when you will call
- 10:15us home from here to be with you.
- 10:18But until then, we will build your temple where we are, and we
- 10:22will worship you, our dependable, loving, ever
- 10:28faithful God, who gave us His Son, whose name we pray.
- 10:32All of this in Amen.
