Speaker 3: they got a whole lot of water down there. Actually
2:03
Speaker 3: happened over the weekend, some sort of a water issue
2:06
Speaker 3: there and the press room, the technology offices for several agencies,

Speaker 3: including the Secretary of State's office, took on quite a
2:12

Speaker 3: if you may remember, from twenty twenty, where the guy
2:29
Speaker 3: was then a juvenile accused and later convicted of killing
2:33
Speaker 3: his mother, a couple kids, and also his stepfather. That
2:39
Speaker 3: case went to the Supreme Court, and now it looks
2:42
Speaker 3: like there's going to be another trial in that particular case,
2:46
Speaker 3: and we'll give you all the details on that. Plus,

3:00
Speaker 3: from the Kanawh Valley Fellowship Home. How are you doing, sir?
3:03
Speaker 5: I'm fantastic, Dave, how are you?
3:05
Speaker 3: I am doing fine? A little traffic update if you're
3:08
Speaker 3: traveling on I sixty four this morning. There might be
3:11
Speaker 3: a little bit of a delay as as you experience
3:14
Speaker 3: yourself this morning.
3:14
Speaker 6: Right yeaes sir, I live at Nitro and I get
3:17
Speaker 6: on at the Institute exit coming towards town and they're
3:21
Speaker 6: doing some construction right there that slowed things down. And
3:24
Speaker 6: so anyway, I should I knew about it. I should
3:26
Speaker 6: have left a little bit earlier. But it's all right.
3:28
Speaker 6: I called you a two moments or two minutes before
3:31
Speaker 6: time to yeah.
3:32
Speaker 3: We were trying, we were trying to find you, and
3:33
Speaker 3: you said, I'm just pulling a parking lot. I said, okay,
3:36
Speaker 3: that's fine because it happens. I mean, I live listen,
3:38
Speaker 3: I live in tays Valley. I know all about it,
3:40
Speaker 3: but I appreciate you making the the time to be
3:44
Speaker 3: here with the state. First of all, you're the executive
3:46
Speaker 3: director of the Knah Valley Fellowship Fellowship Home. Tell us
3:50
Speaker 3: about this particular entity and what it does.
3:55
Speaker 6: I'd be happy to I am the executive director of
3:57
Speaker 6: the Canal Valley Fellowship Home is a sober living facility
4:00
Speaker 6: for men that are battling addiction issues. They're trying to
4:06
Speaker 6: get better change their lives. We've been in business since
4:09
Speaker 6: nineteen sixty seven. We were originally an outreach mission of
4:13
Speaker 6: the First Presbyterian Church, and our facility used to be
4:16
Speaker 6: right next door to the church, and then we moved
4:19
Speaker 6: and that's to your west here from the studio, and
4:23
Speaker 6: we moved to the east from the studio across the
4:25
Speaker 6: parking lot. We've been there since two thousand and five
4:29
Speaker 6: and it's a fifteen bed facility at Virginia Street. And
4:33
Speaker 6: then we have incorporated aftercare, an aftercare home called Kimball
4:38
Speaker 6: Hall and another apartment building called Dickinson Place, and those
4:44
Speaker 6: both are on Choir Street. So as men face through
4:49
Speaker 6: after they come to us, after they've been in either
4:51
Speaker 6: treatment for alcohol and drug addiction or they've maybe come
4:56
Speaker 6: out of incarceration, a lot of people get in trouble.
4:59
Speaker 5: Good people do bad.
5:00
Speaker 6: Things when they're under the influence of drugs and alcohol,
5:03
Speaker 6: and so we help. It's basically a structured living program
5:07
Speaker 6: that helps we talk about structure, action, accountability, so one
5:11
Speaker 6: day to time we get over our addiction. And I'm
5:14
Speaker 6: proud to be a part of I'm a person in
5:15
Speaker 6: long term recovery. I've been sober, i haven't had a drinker,
5:18
Speaker 6: moved to my honoring drug for thirty seven and a
5:20
Speaker 6: half years, and so it's a mission for me.
5:23
Speaker 5: It's a personal thing.
5:24
Speaker 6: I've retired from the car business, and I've done a
5:27
Speaker 6: lot of things here in the Canall Valley, but I'm
5:30
Speaker 6: a riverboat captain, former Captain of the Spirit of West Virginia,
5:34
Speaker 6: different things like that. But the Fellowship Home, I've been
5:37
Speaker 6: a volunteer there for thirty years and I've been the
5:40
Speaker 6: executive director of the former director, David McFarland retired in
5:43
Speaker 6: two thousand and one and I applied for the job
5:45
Speaker 6: and took his place.
5:46
Speaker 5: And so.
5:48
Speaker 6: It's a sense of purpose an advocation for me, rather
5:51
Speaker 6: than the vocation.
5:52
Speaker 3: I want to talk about your journey to get where
5:56
Speaker 3: you are and how you wanted to give back, because
5:59
Speaker 3: so many times I think when people are trying to
6:01
Speaker 3: overcome anything, it doesn't matter whether it's drugs, alcohol, whatever.
6:06
Speaker 3: You know, people sometimes I guess they find themselves talking
6:11
Speaker 3: to people that they can't relate to. You know, you've
6:13
Speaker 3: never been in my shoes. But in your case, Dick,
6:16
Speaker 3: you have been in these people's shoes.
6:19
Speaker 5: Absolutely.
6:20
Speaker 6: I've been in their shoes and I've been right exactly
6:24
Speaker 6: where they are. And in fact, this past weekend, I
6:27
Speaker 6: spent the in Pinehurst, North Carolina, at a fraternity reunion.
6:31
Speaker 5: I was a member the or.
6:33
Speaker 6: I am a member of the Phi capha Psi fraternity
6:35
Speaker 6: from in Morgantown, West Virginia, Alpha.
6:37
Speaker 5: And.
6:39
Speaker 6: My addiction to alcohol blossomed while I was in college,
6:44
Speaker 6: and I went to this reunion with we had ninety
6:47
Speaker 6: men from the middle seventies to the early eighties, and
6:51
Speaker 6: half of them said, Captain Dick, I'm surprised you're still alive,
6:55
Speaker 6: because they knew me as the drunk captain and you know,
6:59
Speaker 6: I got so it up several years ago. And they
7:01
Speaker 6: and and they, you know, they're all happy to see me,
7:03
Speaker 6: and they were, they were, you know, pleased to see
7:05
Speaker 6: that I was doing well. And I told them about
7:07
Speaker 6: our mission and what we do to help men, and
7:10
Speaker 6: you know, so it's because of that I've been active
7:13
Speaker 6: in recovery ever since then. And part of our the
7:16
Speaker 6: steps is the twelfth step in the in twelve step,
7:20
Speaker 6: recovery is having had a spiritual awakening as the result
7:22
Speaker 6: of these steps. We tried to practice these We try
7:24
Speaker 6: to stay sober and practice these principles and all our affairs,
7:28
Speaker 6: so we you know, one day at a time. We
7:29
Speaker 6: don't drink, we don't drug, and we practiced the principles
7:33
Speaker 6: that we learned through the steps and that's that's part
7:35
Speaker 6: part of the recovery process. So I get to be
7:36
Speaker 6: a part of it because I've been through it.
7:38
Speaker 3: And I would I would imagine again and we'll move
7:41
Speaker 3: on from it from your story, but I would imagine
7:43
Speaker 3: again that that these men that are in these homes
7:46
Speaker 3: are looking at you going okay, well I can I
7:48
Speaker 3: can relate to this guy?
7:50
Speaker 5: You know, well I have gray hair, so is that
7:53
Speaker 5: what it is?
7:54
Speaker 6: But yeah, they think I'm their their grandfather.
7:57
Speaker 3: Right, that's or whatever it takes. Hey, Dave Island Showing

Speaker 3: a k at Meeksrealtygroup. Dot com one of the things
8:21
Speaker 3: that you mentioned there and in reading about your organization
8:23
Speaker 3: as I was getting ready for the show, you talked
8:26
Speaker 3: about these words structure, action, and accountability. Why are those
8:31
Speaker 3: things so important? And give me a definition as it
8:34
Speaker 3: pertains to the Sober Living Facility what those things mean.
8:39
Speaker 6: Well, those are the catchphrase for what basically what we do.
8:43
Speaker 6: Because men that are mired in addiction, they're shackled to
8:47
Speaker 6: a disease. We you know, American Medical Association defined are
8:51
Speaker 6: they They said that alcoholism addiction to alcohol was a
8:56
Speaker 6: disease back in nineteen fifty five. And drugs that particularly,
9:02
Speaker 6: you know, the drugs of late the opioid crisis and
9:05
Speaker 6: the settlement fund that happened because of the APU week
9:07
Speaker 6: crisis with you know, and that's turned into a heroin crisis,
9:10
Speaker 6: has turned into a funnel crisis that's turned into just
9:13
Speaker 6: these other drugs that people become addicted to. When men
9:17
Speaker 6: get in a situation where they're they're hopelessly addicted, they'll
9:21
Speaker 6: do things that are out of character and out of
9:23
Speaker 6: there what they were raised and trained to do, and
9:26
Speaker 6: they become they lead an unstructured life. They need to
9:29
Speaker 6: learn how to get up and make their bed. We
9:31
Speaker 6: provide structure for that. We provide three meals a day,
9:35
Speaker 6: We provide addiction counseling, provide a lot of things.
9:38
Speaker 5: You know, we take action.
9:40
Speaker 6: We go to twelve step meetings, we go to AA
9:42
Speaker 6: and n A, and we go to celebrate recovery. We've
9:44
Speaker 6: got any kind of a twelve step recovery meeting. Or
9:46
Speaker 6: if we go to church, if we find help in church,
9:49
Speaker 6: we encourage that. We so we take action and then
9:54
Speaker 6: we we're accountable to one another. We drug test our men,
9:57
Speaker 6: and you know, routinely randomly on a week basis. They
10:00
Speaker 6: don't know when it's going to happen. So in the
10:03
Speaker 6: beginning phases, when they still have cravings, we want to
10:05
Speaker 6: make sure that they you know, they got to have
10:08
Speaker 6: a desire to want to be with us. And when
10:09
Speaker 6: they when we when we test them, they that makes
10:13
Speaker 6: them feel comfortable. So there it's a sober environment where
10:15
Speaker 6: they're safe. We don't lock our doors on the inside.
10:20
Speaker 6: We you know, we we're accountable to one another in
10:22
Speaker 6: the house and and we we just practice.
10:25
Speaker 5: Good wholesome basically wholesome living.
10:27
Speaker 6: We learned how making our bed, believe it or not
10:30
Speaker 6: making your bed start your day right, You say your
10:32
Speaker 6: prayers and make your bed when you come home that evening.
10:35
Speaker 6: If you've had a bad day and you come in
10:36
Speaker 6: home into a nice room with a made bed, you
10:38
Speaker 6: can lay down and take a nap. And it's just
10:41
Speaker 6: organized as reorganize the things that gets on here.
10:43
Speaker 3: It's about much more than making the bed correct. It's
10:46
Speaker 3: it's it's kind of symbolism a little bit. It just
10:48
Speaker 3: said it kind of it kind of starts your day.
10:49
Speaker 3: If you had to guess Nick, over the years, give
10:53
Speaker 3: me a ballpark, how many how many men you've been
10:55
Speaker 3: able to help?
10:56
Speaker 5: Uh?
10:57
Speaker 6: We Well, we have records and we we the older
11:01
Speaker 6: records are not as good as the new records, but
11:02
Speaker 6: we've helped over two thousand men find sobriety and recovery
11:07
Speaker 6: over this since nineteen sixty seven.
11:10
Speaker 3: How difficult is it to get in there? And what's
11:13
Speaker 3: the process like, Because that's what we hear a lot
11:16
Speaker 3: with people that are addicts. I'll say, well, I you
11:19
Speaker 3: know them, or their family will say, well, we want
11:21
Speaker 3: to get help, but there's no beds available. How difficult
11:24
Speaker 3: and what's the process like to get in.
11:26
Speaker 6: Well, the process with us It starts with an application
11:30
Speaker 6: and so it's on our website. It's kV FH dot
11:34
Speaker 6: o RG. That's our initials. Canall Value Fellowship Home dot org.
11:38
Speaker 6: And there's an application process. You fill the application out
11:41
Speaker 6: that goes directly to my computer. We review the application
11:45
Speaker 6: with the house manager and some of the other people
11:47
Speaker 6: the team at our house, and we do an interview
11:50
Speaker 6: and sometimes we do two interviews with people. We usually
11:53
Speaker 6: have right now, we have a waiting list to get
11:55
Speaker 6: in our house, and that's true when we've heard the
11:58
Speaker 6: rumors that it is true. It's hard to get in,
12:00
Speaker 6: especially in a nice facility like ours, and we look
12:05
Speaker 6: for people they're serious. We want to hear that they're
12:07
Speaker 6: not just wanting to get out of jail, or they're
12:09
Speaker 6: not wanting to get their wife back, or they're not
12:11
Speaker 6: wanting to you know, they're doing it for their because
12:13
Speaker 6: they want to get better from their no'm me.
12:15
Speaker 3: Jump in here. What do you look for if you're
12:17
Speaker 3: having a set down with these men that lets you
12:21
Speaker 3: know or let your staff know, this guy is really serious.
12:24
Speaker 3: This guy's just not trying to get his family back
12:26
Speaker 3: or trying to stay out of jail. To make you know,
12:28
Speaker 3: to make the parole officer happy or whatever. What what
12:31
Speaker 3: do you see in their eyes? What do you what
12:33
Speaker 3: do you pick up on that says, hey, this guy
12:36
Speaker 3: is legit, this guy's a real deal.
12:38
Speaker 6: Well willingness, willingness to do whatever there is, suggested our
12:44
Speaker 6: assistant manager House director, Jay has been with us nineteen
12:47
Speaker 6: years and he he can sniff out bs. Basically it's good.
12:53
Speaker 3: But that's the scientific term.
12:55
Speaker 6: Yes, so he can tell one of guys not authentic.
12:59
Speaker 6: And you know, we're not perfect. We can't tell that
13:02
Speaker 6: every time. You know, we we we're you know, we're
13:04
Speaker 6: impostors and we can put on.
13:05
Speaker 5: A good show.
13:06
Speaker 6: But but we look for the guys that are serious
13:09
Speaker 6: and we talked to them. One of the questions is
13:11
Speaker 6: are you willing to do anything steak to get sober?
13:14
Speaker 6: We can say sober and you know, if the answer
13:16
Speaker 6: is yes, are you willing to work at a fast
13:18
Speaker 6: food restaurant? Because all our men, after they're there for
13:20
Speaker 6: two weeks, they have to get a job within two
13:22
Speaker 6: weeks and they pay a small program feed. That's another
13:25
Speaker 6: accountable thing that they do is pay a program fee
13:27
Speaker 6: to offset our cost of operating the facility. And you know,
13:31
Speaker 6: if they say they're willing to work at McDonald's and
13:32
Speaker 6: flip Hamburgers. If that's what it takes, then that's a
13:35
Speaker 6: good sign. When they say no, I you know, I
13:37
Speaker 6: have an accounting degree. I want to you know, I'm
13:39
Speaker 6: going to go back to arenot fosters to an accounting firm?
13:43
Speaker 6: You know, we want the guys that are going to
13:44
Speaker 6: come in because we want them to get a job.
13:46
Speaker 6: We often tell them their jobs have to fit into
13:49
Speaker 6: our program because their sobriety comes first. So we say
13:53
Speaker 6: that that you have to get a job, not the job.
13:57
Speaker 3: You'll get the job later on. And so it's just steps.
14:00
Speaker 3: It's like it's like steps of a ladder. I mean,
14:03
Speaker 3: you've got to start at the bottom and kind of
14:04
Speaker 3: work your way up. What you talked about the number
14:07
Speaker 3: of men that you've seen, Can you give me a
14:10
Speaker 3: success rate or.
14:12
Speaker 6: I can by that statistically, I can qualify it, Yes, sir,
14:16
Speaker 6: there's a there's a nice video on our website and
14:18
Speaker 6: there's some YouTube videos that Josh Lewis did for our
14:21
Speaker 6: recent fundraiser. But what we found is that our minimum
14:26
Speaker 6: commitments six months if you come and stay at knaw
14:28
Speaker 6: Valley Fellowship poem for six months, your chances of maintaining,
14:32
Speaker 6: staying and maintaining sobriety as long as you stay in
14:35
Speaker 6: recovery is one and three. It's thirty three percent. That's
14:39
Speaker 6: that's a pretty that's a statistic that is real. But
14:43
Speaker 6: if you stay with us a year, we believe that
14:45
Speaker 6: a minimum really should be a year. If you experienced
14:48
Speaker 6: four seasons, your birthdays, your grandmother's death, your the new job,
14:53
Speaker 6: a baby being born, somebody you know, a tragedy, or
14:57
Speaker 6: a big life event, and you've experienced all four seasons,
15:00
Speaker 6: there's something about it, a magical about a year. If
15:03
Speaker 6: you get a year sobriety and you stay with us
15:05
Speaker 6: and you stay active in recovery, you'r changing to go
15:07
Speaker 6: up to seventy percent. And the caveat is staying active
15:11
Speaker 6: in recovery. We you know, part of our mission, part
15:14
Speaker 6: of that action and accountability is getting involved in the
15:17
Speaker 6: recovery process. And there's a recovery community here in the
15:20
Speaker 6: Kanal Valley that is the biggest in West Virginia, and
15:24
Speaker 6: there are people that will help you, and you get
15:26
Speaker 6: to help people. After you've been helped, you get to
15:27
Speaker 6: help people. And so we the success is that you
15:31
Speaker 6: know that we you know, we worked that twelve step.
15:34
Speaker 6: We carry the message to the sick and suffering, and
15:36

16:07
Speaker 6: to meetings, they keep doing the things that they understand,
16:09
Speaker 6: our success rate is nearly eighty percent, and we measure
16:12
Speaker 6: that measure of success is they're still active and they're
16:14
Speaker 6: in the program, they'll stay sober for five years. There're
16:17
Speaker 6: twenty percent twenty to twenty five percent that fall off
16:20
Speaker 6: that may not get it, and they may not get
16:22
Speaker 6: it the first time. Some guys don't get it the
16:24
Speaker 6: first time. A lot of men, you know that we
16:27
Speaker 6: lose men. A lot of men die from addiction. I
16:29
Speaker 6: mean that the overdose rate is horrible, but it's it's
16:33

16:38
Speaker 6: brain chemistry has to be rearranged, and you have to
16:40
Speaker 6: get the mindset that I want to get better, and
16:43
Speaker 6: then I'm an addict or I'm an alcoholic and I've
16:45

20:05
Speaker 3: Well not yet, No, now it does, and I'm sorry.
20:07
Speaker 3: So the Governor UH has been having a lot of
20:10
Speaker 3: press events lately, which is good for the press covering it.
20:13
Speaker 3: Though generally speaking, when I hear from from some of
20:16
Speaker 3: you folks is you don't always know what the subject
20:18
Speaker 3: of said pressers is until you get there, or you
20:21
Speaker 3: tune in online or whatever. Yesterday kind of that way,
20:23
Speaker 3: in Bridgeport, and Mike Nolton covered He writes about at
20:26
Speaker 3: wv metronews dot com, the governor calling it a new
20:30
Speaker 3: way to think about roads, bridges, et cetera in West Virginia.
20:33
Speaker 3: What did you take from it?
20:36
Speaker 9: I did watch it, as you said, Metro News intrepid
20:39
Speaker 9: reporter Mike Milton was there on scene.
20:43
Speaker 7: Uh.
20:43
Speaker 9: I will just say from a basic and maybe not
20:46
Speaker 9: very interesting viewpoint, it was hard to hear the audio.
20:49
Speaker 9: Uh it was it was kind of hard to make
20:51
Speaker 9: out what it was outside. It was breezy. It seemed
20:54
Speaker 9: like there was maybe a little bit of a microphone
20:56
Speaker 9: connection problem. But the governor, the current governor, does want
21:01
Speaker 9: to make highway maintenance a priority, had lots of people
21:06
Speaker 9: there backing them up. I think it's one that resonates
21:09
Speaker 9: with West Virginian's You know, we had a former flagship
21:15
Speaker 9: talk show program host who presented the listeners with hashtag
21:22
Speaker 9: ft d R fixed the darn roads. The prior governor,
21:27
Speaker 9: i would say, also made an emphasis of highway and
21:33
Speaker 9: bridge maintenance, construction and repair. However, this governor drew a
21:40
Speaker 9: distinction yesterday and said that much of the work under
21:44
Speaker 9: the prior governor this is me paraphrasing, was inefficient. Had
21:49
Speaker 9: some criticism for Roads to Prosperity. If you'll remember Roads
21:54
Speaker 9: to Prosperity, that there was a statewide vote on the
21:58
Speaker 9: authorization of those bonds, occurred on a Saturday. It was
22:01
Speaker 9: fairly low turnout. That money then was meant to be
22:07
Speaker 9: used for I'm being critical of Morsey sound and now
22:11
Speaker 9: I can hear my own audio crackling. Anyway. The more
22:17
Speaker 9: the critique is that that money got used fast and
22:23
Speaker 9: there are still many years ahead of to pay those
22:30
Speaker 9: bonds down. And he said that means that for governors
22:32
Speaker 9: like him in the future, the money is limited, but
22:35
Speaker 9: he intends to take a data driven approach to the
22:39
Speaker 9: kind of highway repair people expect.
22:41
Speaker 3: Here's a fun fact on that Roads to Prosperity election,
22:44
Speaker 3: which you mentioned was on summer in twenty eighteen. That
22:47
Speaker 3: was the first election in the state of West Virginia
22:49
Speaker 3: to require voter I d I just thought you should
22:53
Speaker 3: know that that's a fun fact. I learned my time
22:55
Speaker 3: in say government.
22:57
Speaker 9: Fun fact, and it was a good test case because
23:00
Speaker 9: the actual participation on that Saturday election, which as I recall,
23:05
Speaker 9: was a heavy football watching Saturday. Yeah, it was it
23:09
Speaker 9: was a fairly low turnout. Yeah, very and for good
23:13
Speaker 9: or bad, West Virginia has the consequences have been that
23:17
Speaker 9: the state drew down millions of dollars in road bonds
23:22
Speaker 9: and built a bunch of new roads. In the meantime,
23:28
Speaker 9: it feels like, I mean, this is this is anecdotal
23:32
Speaker 9: for me. It feels like people's complaints about the highway
23:36
Speaker 9: quality has has not gone down.
23:39
Speaker 3: And what I gathered in listening later and we've actually
23:42
Speaker 3: played back some of that audio on Metro News midday afterday, Brad,
23:45
Speaker 3: what I gathered is the governor again, like you, I
23:48
Speaker 3: don't want to paraphrase, but I think what I what
23:50
Speaker 3: I gathered from this, Brad from the governor is that, Okay,
23:53
Speaker 3: it's great that we have built new roads, but what
23:55
Speaker 3: about the roads we have now? Not everybody, I mean
23:59
Speaker 3: I travel on an interstate every day to come to work,
24:01
Speaker 3: but also travel on some non interstate roads that are
24:03
Speaker 3: in pretty horrible shape right now to get to the interstates.
24:07
Speaker 3: And I think that's what a lot of people have
24:11
Speaker 3: concerns with. Is that what you hear as well as
24:14
Speaker 3: some of these I mean the back roads, the hollow roads, whatever,
24:18
Speaker 3: are are in pretty pretty crappy shape, Brad.
24:22
Speaker 9: Yeah, potholes, grain edge, the I mean even the major highways.
24:29
Speaker 9: There's bobly construction going on, but there's orange cones everywhere,
24:32
Speaker 9: and I think as a it might not be the intent,
24:36
Speaker 9: but I think what you hear as a critique of
24:38
Speaker 9: that is we're not ever going to finish this. There's
24:40
Speaker 9: been orange cones for a weeks. I have to go
24:43
Speaker 9: thirty in the fifty zone all the time.
24:45
Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, I mean certainly, Yeah, those of us here
24:49

25:05
Speaker 3: house out there tonight. I'll give you a quote here, Brad.
25:09
Speaker 3: This is from the governor yesterday. There were some divisions
25:11
Speaker 3: within the state Department of Transportation that have five assistant
25:15
Speaker 3: directors and in most cases it was unnecessary. In quote, now, Brad,
25:20
Speaker 3: you start talking about taking away some of the bureaudic
25:23
Speaker 3: the bureaucratic jobs, if that, if that's what they were,
25:26
Speaker 3: and for those some of those in state government, them's
25:29
Speaker 3: fighting words. Buddy.
25:32
Speaker 9: Uh, you know, I it was an interesting thing you
25:35
Speaker 9: pointed out. I guess, I guess I would like to
25:37
Speaker 9: hear more about specifics. It felt like early in the
25:43
Speaker 9: Justice administration there actually was a problem employing enough people
25:48
Speaker 9: in highways, particularly engineers. A lot of them had left
25:52
Speaker 9: and Justice was trying to hire more. Justice Justice had
25:57
Speaker 9: practically a meme of complaining that the Mansion administration had
26:02
Speaker 9: gotten rid of all the great alls the highway equipment.
26:06
Speaker 9: Justice was very upset about the acquisition of grade alls. So,
26:10
Speaker 9: I mean, it's it's all in eurovision of what the
26:13
Speaker 9: department should be, and it's efficiency levels and what's required
26:17
Speaker 9: to do a good job. Clearly, Governor Morrissey has a
26:21
Speaker 9: different view of that than its predecessor, and has blamed
26:26
Speaker 9: his predecessor for some of the structure, some of the priorities.
26:33
Speaker 9: That doesn't surprise me, you know, when it's somebody a
26:36
Speaker 9: relatively new office holder able to say, oh, the previous
26:40
Speaker 9: administration didn't do it right, it's it comes across I
26:44
Speaker 9: think as more more sort of grassroots, more more natural
26:51
Speaker 9: when the prior administration was the opposite party. When it's
26:55
Speaker 9: the same party, are you guys on the same team
26:58
Speaker 9: or not?
27:01
Speaker 3: But it started out being the opposite party, you know,
27:04
Speaker 3: in the before the governor made to switch over from
27:07
Speaker 3: from uh, from Democrat to a Republican as he did.
27:09
Speaker 3: I don't know, Brad, It just seems to me, And
27:12
Speaker 3: that's a very good point. You reference that. How Jim Justice,
27:16
Speaker 3: you know, at some point would would take a shot
27:18
Speaker 3: maybe at previous administrations.
27:20
Speaker 9: Uh.
27:20
Speaker 3: But it seems to me and he never comes out
27:24
Speaker 3: that I've heard anyway. He never Governor Morrissey never comes
27:27
Speaker 3: out and mentions the Justice administration by name. But it
27:31
Speaker 3: seems to me, bubbling under the surface there that there
27:34
Speaker 3: might be some some bad blood still there, because it
27:38
Speaker 3: seems like every opportunity right or wrong, that the governor, uh,
27:42
Speaker 3: the current Governor Morrissey gets cast a little shade over
27:45
Speaker 3: on the previous administration of now Senator than Governor Jim Justice,
27:49
Speaker 3: like he kind of takes that opportunity. Is that what
27:51
Speaker 3: you see as well?
27:54
Speaker 9: I mean, it feels like there are there are invitations
27:59
Speaker 9: to comparison, and I mean Morrissey has his own idea
28:03
Speaker 9: of his administration's priorities and its values. But this was
28:08
Speaker 9: an example yesterday of drawing a comparison with what the
28:12
Speaker 9: Justice administration had done, in particular being critical of Roads
28:15
Speaker 9: to Prosperity. I should say that Metro News Midday, which
28:20
Speaker 9: is the program that you co host, reached out to
28:22
Speaker 9: the to now Senator Justice. His staff provided a response
28:27
Speaker 9: which was, you know, fairly gracious, just you know, they
28:31
Speaker 9: supported Roads to Prosperity. Thought I got a lot done.
28:34
Speaker 9: But there have been other instances. I mean, within a
28:37
Speaker 9: week of taking office, Governor Morrissey pointed to what he
28:43
Speaker 9: called a four hundred million dollar gap in the upcoming
28:45
Speaker 9: budget year. He was pointing towards the budget year that
28:48
Speaker 9: begins this July first, and said that his administration isn't
28:54
Speaker 9: going to fill those gaps with one time dollars. So
28:58
Speaker 9: that was the first line in the sand where Morrisy
29:02
Speaker 9: said we're going to do it differently and was, you know,
29:04
Speaker 9: critical of the way Justice had done the budgeting. Didn't
29:08
Speaker 9: mention Justice by name, but that's what you took away
29:12
Speaker 9: last week or the week before. There was a press
29:14
Speaker 9: conference where Governor Morrissey said that his administration is going
29:19
Speaker 9: to be more open about questions regarding child welfare and
29:24
Speaker 9: outlined some other things, but again without naming Justice. He
29:28
Speaker 9: was critical of that administration, described it as being too
29:32
Speaker 9: closed down. So there have been yes, instance after instance,
29:38
Speaker 9: and I mean, it's it's it's intriguing the conflict. It
29:43
Speaker 9: is a little bit awkward because it is one big
29:46
Speaker 9: Republican tent with these guys, and Jim Justice hasn't gone away.
29:50
Speaker 9: He's now a US Senator, so he's, you know, right
29:53
Speaker 9: there taking part in our politics.
29:55
Speaker 3: I had somebody who is in the Republican Party said,
30:00
Speaker 3: and they're not in a position of leadership, but they
30:02
Speaker 3: are a Republican that said to me the other day,
30:05
Speaker 3: are in a conversation not on the air, that said,
30:09
Speaker 3: people can say what they want about about Jim Justice
30:12
Speaker 3: at the time he was governor, but he had one
30:14
Speaker 3: of the depending on which pole, you look at the
30:16
Speaker 3: top three or four approval ratings of any governor in
30:19
Speaker 3: America at one point, and they were asking would the
30:26
Speaker 3: has there been any approval rating type polls out yet
30:29
Speaker 3: from blankenshep or others. Uh, that's Mark not don about
30:35
Speaker 3: the approval of approval rating of Governor Morrisey and how
30:39
Speaker 3: the two would would compare to each other. I mean,
30:42
Speaker 3: and to be fair, you know, Governor Morsey just took
30:44
Speaker 3: office a few months ago and the session just wrapped
30:46
Speaker 3: up and so on and so forth. Uh, but I mean,
30:48
Speaker 3: I'm just kind of curious as to as to what
30:50
Speaker 3: those would look like.
30:53
Speaker 9: Let me buy myself some time because I am using
30:56
Speaker 9: my search engine.
30:57
Speaker 3: But well, while you do that, let me just say
30:59

31:22
Speaker 9: Oh thanks, yet I have failed to use it. So
31:28
Speaker 9: let me let me just say maybe that I was
31:32
Speaker 9: trying to look up Morning Consults, governor rankings and what
31:35
Speaker 9: I came up with was Morning Consult Pro, which makes
31:38
Speaker 9: you pay for a subscription, and we ain't doing it,
31:40
Speaker 9: and well I don't have one, but we're still.
31:44
Speaker 3: Trying to pay for the studio here.
31:45
Speaker 9: So you know, uh, but I did see one from
31:50
Speaker 9: Morning Consults.
31:52
Speaker 3: I thought, okay, well, I'll tell you what we can.
31:54
Speaker 3: We can look that up and and maybe get a
31:57
Speaker 3: result to somebody at a at a future time. How's that?
31:59
Speaker 3: I do want to ask you about.
32:01
Speaker 9: This multi states? It wasn't Morning Consult, it's multi state.
32:11
Speaker 9: Has Morrisey fairly well, number tied for number seventeen in
32:18
Speaker 9: America and popularity overall. Let's see, I'm trying to read
32:24
Speaker 9: the church as I.
32:26
Speaker 3: Mean, really, Brad, that's not bad. That's not bad at all.
32:30
Speaker 9: No, it's not bad at all.
32:31
Speaker 3: It's not Jim Justice numbers. But again, to be fair
32:34
Speaker 3: to the governor, he just his administration just took over
32:37
Speaker 3: a few months ago, so that there's time to get there.
32:40
Speaker 9: Yeah, and you know, Morrissey won with a plurality. It
32:46
Speaker 9: was well, he won he won the primary, which West
32:49
Speaker 9: Virginia is back to that being the main election. He
32:52
Speaker 9: won the primary in a plurality among you know, four
32:55
Speaker 9: leading candidates, so it was reasonable to split that. But
33:00
Speaker 9: then you know one but general election fairly overwhelmingly, and
33:06
Speaker 9: I will, I will send this to your I'm going
33:11
Speaker 9: to send this to Dave Allen's phone. I happen to
33:13
Speaker 9: know the number, okay, and then if you want to
33:17
Speaker 9: play around.
33:17
Speaker 3: With it, I will. I've had the same cell phone
33:20
Speaker 3: numbers since like nineteen ninety seven, so everybody knows Dave
33:22
Speaker 3: out all right, all right, all right, before we let
33:26
Speaker 3: you go, I always ask you, what else are you
33:28
Speaker 3: looking at today? That's kind of a running joke between
33:31
Speaker 3: me and you. But I know what people were looking
33:33
Speaker 3: at yesterday is about ten thousand gallons of water flowing
33:37
Speaker 3: through the Capitol basement where people like you and Steven Allen,
33:41
Speaker 3: Adams and Amelia a Million nicely and others work from.
33:46
Speaker 3: You know, it's kind of an off season, so I
33:47
Speaker 3: don't know that anybody. Well, Stephen was probably there because
33:51
Speaker 3: I think he actually made the call to Jeff Jenkins
33:52
Speaker 3: and said, hey, we got a mess out here. I
33:54
Speaker 3: actually did talk to Mike Queen with the Secretary of
33:58
Speaker 3: State's office a little bit earlier, and that the basement
34:01
Speaker 3: area houses not only the press room, but also the
34:05
Speaker 3: I T Department for the Secretary of State's office and
34:08
Speaker 3: several other facilities. I think what the title was, but
34:11
Speaker 3: it's like a legislative services or something is down there
34:14
Speaker 3: as well. What are you hearing about this mess at
34:16
Speaker 3: the capitol yesterday? I know they're working to clean it up,
34:18
Speaker 3: but it was a mess yesterday. We got a picture,
34:20
Speaker 3: as a matter of fact, posted a WV metro news
34:23
Speaker 3: dot com about it.
34:25
Speaker 9: It was a mess. There are offices, including the pressroom
34:29
Speaker 9: that have been affected. There is a story at metronews
34:33
Speaker 9: dot com if people who want to know more, it's
34:36
Speaker 9: it's less about the pressroom, but more about the other
34:38
Speaker 9: office right than that that that part of the building.
34:42
Speaker 9: I will just say I am it is good that
34:44
Speaker 9: the hot Morrissey summer has not yet officially begun. It
34:49
Speaker 9: would not be a great situation at this moment to
34:52
Speaker 9: be in a like a special session, for example, we'd
34:57
Speaker 9: all have to find a less soggy place to work.
35:00
Speaker 9: So hopefully it is dried up before we wind up
35:04
Speaker 9: in there for a special session on PIA or anything else.
35:07
Speaker 3: All right, hey, Brad, I'll leave it there. I appreciate

41:14
Speaker 3: Tex says, I hope the governor really knows what maintenance is.
41:18
Speaker 3: It's cleaning and painting. Ditch cleaning, culvert cleaning, etc. It's
41:22
Speaker 3: not renovation of a bridge because it wasn't maintained. It
41:26
Speaker 3: says a texture let me see here. Text says know

Speaker 3: what Mike's Patrick Morrison, A few Republicans do other than
41:34
Speaker 3: the loud anti vax people. Well, is rival ratings aren't bad?
41:38

Speaker 3: I'll try to break it down, maybe get it on
41:42
Speaker 3: the show tomorrow or maybe on Metro News midday later today.
41:45
Speaker 3: But is rival ratings as far as oven are going.
41:47
Speaker 3: And again he sent it to me during the break,

Speaker 3: Metronews dot com. This Sky Gavin Blaine Smith, twenty one
45:25
Speaker 3: years of age, convicted of killing four family members back
45:27
Speaker 3: in two thousand.
45:28
Speaker 13: Now.
45:28
Speaker 3: The conviction came in twenty twenty two on three counts
45:33
Speaker 3: of first degree murder, one count of second degree murder,
45:36
Speaker 3: and one count of using a firearm during the commission
45:38
Speaker 3: of a felony. He was sentenced to three life sentences
45:43
Speaker 3: with mercy, with an additional fifty years now. He was
45:47
Speaker 3: granted mercy because he was a juvenile and state law
45:51
Speaker 3: does not allow for a juvenile to be sentenced to
45:53
Speaker 3: life without mercy. He was, however, tried as an adult now.
45:58
Speaker 3: Smith was sixteen at the time and was accused of
46:01
Speaker 3: shooting and killing his stepfather, his mother, and two young brothers.
46:05
Speaker 3: One was twelve and the other was three. This took
46:08
Speaker 3: place on Cemetery Hill in Elkview. Hold the phone, though,
46:12
Speaker 3: because yesterday the State Supreme Court of Appeals ruled to
46:16
Speaker 3: vacate the sentence, claiming that the Kanawha County Circuit Court
46:21
Speaker 3: messed up, saying that the court improperly informed the jury
46:26
Speaker 3: that if Smith were to be convicted a first degree murder,
46:30
Speaker 3: he would be eligible for parole because of his juvenile status. Now,
46:36
Speaker 3: Justice Haley Bunn wrote the majority opinion, while Justice Tim
46:40
Speaker 3: Armstea Armstead dissented. Both opinions are contained as part of
46:44
Speaker 3: Aaron Parker's story at wv Metronews dot com. So it
46:48
Speaker 3: looks like Smith is now going to get a new trial.
46:51
Speaker 3: And you know, I'm no legal expert, and by the way,
46:54
Speaker 3: no datesmen set for the triphy. I'm not a legal expert,
46:57
Speaker 3: but I think what I'm reading into the story here
47:02
Speaker 3: is that by simply uttering that in court, it makes
47:07
Speaker 3: the whole thing null and void. And so he's going
47:10
Speaker 3: to get a new trial. And this is the guy again,
47:12
Speaker 3: he was sixteen at the time that he is alleged
47:16
Speaker 3: to I guess I have to go back to saying
47:17
Speaker 3: the ledge now alleged of committing the crime. So now
47:21
Speaker 3: there's going to be a totally new trial. No date
47:23
Speaker 3: has been set. He is accused again of killing his
47:26
Speaker 3: mother's stepfather and two siblings, one of which was only
47:29
Speaker 3: three years old. It happened on a cemetery here hill
47:32
Speaker 3: at Elview. So an interesting story. Indeed, Aaron Parker did
47:36
Speaker 3: a great job with it over at the website wvmetronews
47:39
Speaker 3: dot com. And continuing with the crime blotterer, this one
47:42
Speaker 3: from South Charleston Police say a man was stabbed several times,
47:46
Speaker 3: apparently a domestic dispute early this morning. It was reported
47:49
Speaker 3: at around three point thirty this morning at an apartment
47:53
Speaker 3: complex and the twelve hundred block of East Village Drive
47:55
Speaker 3: in South Charleston. Man and woman involved. Apparently the man
47:58
Speaker 3: was stabbed up to fourteen times. The woman also injured.
48:01
Speaker 3: And that's all the information at this time that we
48:03
Speaker 3: have available. We will have more, of course, available on
48:06
Speaker 3: the website when it becomes public knowledge and statements are released.
48:12
Speaker 3: Text says props to John Fetterman for calling out his
48:15
Speaker 3: party for refusing to condemn these riots. Oh that's right,
48:19
Speaker 3: it's not January sixth, so they're perfectly cool with all this.
48:22
Speaker 3: In fact, many are actually defending these domestic terrorists. Exactly
48:26
Speaker 3: why I walked away years ago. I'm presuming the texture
48:28
Speaker 3: mean they walked away from the Democratic Party. Look I
48:32
Speaker 3: I I don't. I don't disagree with anything the text
48:35
Speaker 3: are said at all. I don't agree. I don't. I
48:39
Speaker 3: have questions about the way the Trump administration is handling it.
48:43
Speaker 3: But as far as as as the unlawfulness that is
48:48
Speaker 3: going on there, I have no issue with cracking down
48:51
Speaker 3: at all on that. I just have I have some
48:53
Speaker 3: quite I don't even have issues. I think I have
48:55
Speaker 3: questions on the way the Trump administration is handling I
48:58
Speaker 3: do find it very is heartening, though to hear the
49:02
Speaker 3: president he actually yesterday used the term insurrection of talking
49:07
Speaker 3: about what's going on out there in Los Angeles and
49:11
Speaker 3: those that failed to see the correlation between Los Angeles
49:14
Speaker 3: and January sixth, I can't understand your thinking on that,
49:18
Speaker 3: although it was a I guess a much, but I mean,
49:21
Speaker 3: what you're seeing on television is about a two to
49:24
Speaker 3: three block area of Los Angeles. This is not widespread,
49:28
Speaker 3: and I'm not defending it by any stretch of the imagination,
49:31
Speaker 3: but it's this is not like they're burning down Rodeo
49:33
Speaker 3: or Beverly Hills. You know, like Danny and I talked
49:36
Speaker 3: about on the show yesterday, where he spends a lot
49:39
Speaker 3: of time an hour away, there's nothing going on. It
49:41
Speaker 3: seems to be in this area. But you know, I'm
49:46
Speaker 3: not defending what's going on out there at all, but
49:48
Speaker 3: I'll tell you one thing I would like to see.
49:52
Speaker 3: We talk a lot in this country about illegal immigration,
49:55
Speaker 3: which is a major problem, and I say crackdown on
49:57
Speaker 3: at one hundred percent. But I'm talking about the people
50:01
Speaker 3: that come here and want and actually want to contribute,
50:05
Speaker 3: but haven't yet gone about it the legal way. I
50:09
Speaker 3: would like to see in this country US go after
50:11
Speaker 3: the people that are hiring them. And guess what their
50:16
Speaker 3: the color of their skin ain't brown. You go to
50:20
Speaker 3: any large city and you go buy your And I'm
50:22
Speaker 3: not picking on home depot or lows. I'm just saying
50:24
Speaker 3: any any large scale store like that, a hardware store,
50:29
Speaker 3: number whatever. I saw it firsthand. I was in North
50:32
Speaker 3: Carolina visiting some of my wife's family a couple of
50:35
Speaker 3: years ago, and I think I mentioned on the show
50:37
Speaker 3: I had my brother in law asked me to take
50:40
Speaker 3: a ride down to a local home depot in North Carolina.
50:43
Speaker 3: Not that I'm actually going to be able to, you know,
50:44
Speaker 3: do anything with a hammer, but but I rode with
50:46
Speaker 3: my brother in law, Johnny, in a pickup truck, so
50:49
Speaker 3: that makes me tough. And we went to a local
50:51
Speaker 3: home depot and I saw all these people standing around
50:53
Speaker 3: and I see these contractors pulling up in other pickup
50:57
Speaker 3: trucks and getting these people and put them on the
51:01
Speaker 3: back of the truck and taking them out, And I think,
51:02
Speaker 3: what's going on here? He goes, Oh, yeah, they're they're
51:04
Speaker 3: illegal immigrants and they come here and the local contractors
51:08
Speaker 3: come down pick them up and then take them and
51:09
Speaker 3: put them to work. Okay, that's a crime in and
51:13
Speaker 3: of itself. How about we go after those people too. Yeah,
51:17
Speaker 3: we go after the people that are illegal immigrants. I
51:20
Speaker 3: have no issue with that at all. But how about
51:22
Speaker 3: we also go after the people that are hiring them,
51:24
Speaker 3: and those aren't brown people, those are white people. Just say,
51:28
Speaker 3: Jack says, why are the looters and rioters lumped in
51:30
Speaker 3: with Democrats? They aren't flying flags with names of their
51:33
Speaker 3: favorite politician, says a Texter TJ. Meadows flying the flag
51:38
Speaker 3: of whatever. If you had a flag, TJ, what would
51:41
Speaker 3: be on it? A T A J and an M
51:44
Speaker 3: A T and a J and an M TJN. That's
51:47
Speaker 3: how I signed everything. When you said T I thought
51:49
Speaker 3: you meant golf tea. No, my initial is fin TJN. Alright,
51:52
Speaker 3: what you got on the show today, buddy?
51:53
Speaker 16: So a pretty good show. Coming up, we'll start with
51:55
Speaker 16: State Senator Ben Queen. He'll talk about that revolutionary highway
51:58
Speaker 16: plan that the governor announce yesterday.
52:00
Speaker 14: He was there.
52:00
Speaker 16: We'll get his thoughts as a state lawmaker. Coming up
52:03
Speaker 16: at ten thirty McDowell County Superintendent doctor inga Barker school's out,
52:07
Speaker 16: but is it really out? How are they dealing down there?
52:10

52:12
Speaker 16: Greg noon to talk about. Is it legal for Trump
52:15
Speaker 16: to federalize the National Guard? The politics, the Insurrection Act.
