Latest / Mommywood / Mommywood Recut: Making Acting Work With a Baby (with Hannah Hines)
Transcript
- 0:00Hey guys, it's Emily and today's episode is Mommy Would Recut
- 0:06with Hannah Hines. And when I first recorded this
- 0:09conversation with Hannah, my daughter was only about 10 weeks
- 0:12old and I very much had no idea what I was doing yet.
- 0:15Meanwhile, Hannah was already in the preschool stage figuring out
- 0:19self tapes, childcare logistics, and how to actually keep our
- 0:22career going with a toddler. Now listening back, I realize
- 0:27how many of my questions I was asking were based basically
- 0:30coming from survival mode. Like, how are we even showering?
- 0:33How do you schedule auditions? How are you supposed to make
- 0:36this work once you're a parent? In this episode, Hannah shares
- 0:41really honestly about building a village and navigating last
- 0:45minute auditions with a child, as well as the huge identity
- 0:49shift after motherhood and even unexpectedly pivoting into a
- 0:53writing career. Now the best part about this
- 0:59episode with Hannah, the fun part is that since recording
- 1:04this episode, we've actually become real life friends.
- 1:08I love Hannah. I think she is just one of the
- 1:13most genuine, kindest women and this is our friendship has
- 1:20definitely been one of my one of the my favorite best things that
- 1:24have come out of mommy wood. So I I just love her and adore
- 1:28her so much. What started as Instagram
- 1:31friends has turned into hanging out, getting our emotional
- 1:35support coffee together, and now we're even in a book club
- 1:38together, which honestly feels very on brand for mommy Wood.
- 1:42So. If you have ever thought you
- 1:46know I love acting but how am I supposed to really do this now
- 1:50that I have a baby? This episode is for you so
- 1:54please enjoy. I know you will.
- 1:56This episode of Mommy would re cut with Hannah Heinz.
- 2:02How old is yours? I see your little crib in the
- 2:05background. She is 1010 weeks.
- 2:08She's not even in the crib yet. Yeah, you have a 10 week old and
- 2:11you are like fully making a podcast.
- 2:13That's amazing. Because I.
- 2:15Need to ask. You I'm even like, how are we
- 2:19here with like how did we shower today?
- 2:22Spoiler alert, I didn't. We were.
- 2:26Let's see here for a full 8 years and married for a whole 10
- 2:30years before we had a child. Which is like I would.
- 2:35I mean, I don't know what the average is, but I would imagine
- 2:37it's longer than most, right? But that's awesome you got your
- 2:41time together. Yeah, most of the time I wait
- 2:46till she's asleep, which is not my preference because it's late
- 2:51and I'm tired and I feel like I'm like not at my my best.
- 2:55If I have enough notice and I can secure a friend, actor
- 2:59friend come read with me during the middle of the day while my
- 3:02daughter's preschool, that's much preferred.
- 3:05But like getting all those stars to align just doesn't always
- 3:07happen. So like, and especially if it's
- 3:09a short window for submission, I'll just wait until she's down
- 3:14for the night and then we'll do my whole setup.
- 3:16And my husband and I will do that together.
- 3:18But I do have a friend and a neighbor who's also an actor,
- 3:20and she and I help each other read.
- 3:21So sometimes we're able to work it out during the day.
- 3:24But yeah, usually it's when she's asleep and I'm like, I'm
- 3:26toast. You know what I mean?
- 3:28Like, it is not optimal. You just, like, make it work.
- 3:31But woof, how about you? What are you?
- 3:33What are you doing so far? We well Preston, my husband has
- 3:38done has had a. Lot of self.
- 3:40Tapes. Luckily, he's.
- 3:42Been auditioning like crazy, which I'm like that's great.
- 3:44Also super annoying but we'll do it.
- 3:47Obviously she's napping so much so we try and do it like while
- 3:53she's napping, but it's kind of one of those like I'm distracted
- 3:57because when is she going to wake up like?
- 3:59Yeah, just, and, you know, like the one day you you plan a
- 4:03really important audition during their nap, they like, won't nap
- 4:05that day. Like you just, it's like
- 4:06Murphy's Law, you know what I mean?
- 4:07So it's like it's stressful. Yeah, I was like just kind of in
- 4:12mom mode, like at home with her. And then she became, you know,
- 4:16she was like a good age for like, nursery school.
- 4:18We felt like we could do that for at least part of the time.
- 4:20And then work started to come. Things started to open back up.
- 4:23And so it all kind of happened at the same time as sort of like
- 4:25integration back into being like a working, working actor.
- 4:29So you were pretty in the thick of it at the beginning of the
- 4:33pandemic? How was she?
- 4:36She had just turned 1. She had just turned 1.
- 4:39And so, you know, I'm sure you're, I mean, maybe I
- 4:43shouldn't assume you might be experiencing with a young baby
- 4:46that you're home a lot more than you normally would be.
- 4:49Like it can be kind of isolating.
- 4:50You're like home a lot with them, running errands with them
- 4:53as a whole production. Do you know what I mean?
- 4:55And so for her first year of life, I was home quite a bit
- 4:58more than I would normally be because I had a little baby and
- 5:01I was like, cool, she just turned 1.
- 5:04I'm going to like re enter society basically.
- 5:07Do you know what I mean? Like I started like working part
- 5:10time. I was like great.
- 5:13And then a month after her birthday, everything shut down.
- 5:20Where am I? Before she was born, I worked
- 5:23for years for catering companies like that, the catering thing
- 5:27because it's flexible and the hourly was decent, etcetera.
- 5:30And then I got a job at a restaurant and I didn't ever
- 5:35think I would want to work in a restaurant again.
- 5:36But a friend of mine kind of vouched for it.
- 5:38She's like, no, it's family owned.
- 5:39They're really nice. Everyone there is really cool.
- 5:40And she was right. Everyone was lovely.
- 5:42So I was like, oh, great. I actually, I really like this
- 5:46as a side job and I continued to work there for a while while I
- 5:50was pregnant. And then I don't remember how
- 5:52old she was when I started working there like a couple
- 5:54shifts, like a couple nights a week, probably like 6 months or
- 5:57so. I like kind of started going
- 5:59back. But sadly that restaurant is
- 6:03closed indefinitely cause the pandemic like that, it got hit
- 6:06really hard. And so, yeah, so in, like, March
- 6:10of 2020, my husband's job was furloughed and the restaurant
- 6:14closed indefinitely. And so we both found ourselves,
- 6:16like, suddenly very unemployed. But up until that point, yeah,
- 6:20it was like catering work. Restaurant work was like kind of
- 6:22the main, the main thing, a large reason that we waited as
- 6:27long as we did is because I did really want to have years to
- 6:30devote to my career and also to just be married.
- 6:32And I wanted to feel like I had, like, some decent credits under
- 6:35my belt and you know what I mean?
- 6:36Just like I had a little bit of a foothold and I got into my
- 6:42early 30s and part of me knew that I wanted to be a parent in
- 6:46like an eventual sense, but like not in the immediate sense.
- 6:49And I was a little bit like, well, gosh, I really hope that
- 6:52instinct for wanting it in the immediate sense arrives at some
- 6:55point because like, you can't wait forever, you know?
- 6:59And truthfully, I mean, it's, it'll sound so bizarre maybe,
- 7:04but like it just arrived like this desire to start our family,
- 7:07like kind of out of nowhere. I mean like truly it was just
- 7:12like, oh, like I think I think it might be time to.
- 7:16I don't. Know that clock just ticked for
- 7:18you? It did.
- 7:20And like, hi, I'm here. Yeah, I don't know.
- 7:22It suddenly it felt like, oh, I don't want this in the eventual
- 7:24sense. Like I actually want this like
- 7:25kind of in the near future, like.
- 7:27And so we were very fortunate and that the moment we started
- 7:35trying, we got pregnant. Like I know that like not
- 7:37everybody I hate. Telling people.
- 7:39I know because you have to be careful because people do have
- 7:42like struggle with getting pregnant.
- 7:44And I, I don't want to ever make anyone feel like cool for you
- 7:47way to go, you know? But we were fortunate and then
- 7:50we got pregnant right away. But also it was like the shock
- 7:53of my life. Like I really did not expect
- 7:55that. It is.
- 8:02So let's see, I, I didn't show until probably like 5 1/2
- 8:08months, you know, like first baby.
- 8:10And so I was auditioning for non pregnant stuff, I think up until
- 8:15like month 6 and it that was like right around it was the
- 8:19fall of that year. And so it was episodic season.
- 8:22And so actually I had like a really good like cluster of
- 8:25auditions, not for pregnant roles, but I just like kind of
- 8:27hit a stride. It was like, oh, great stuff
- 8:29coming in. There's like there was an office
- 8:31that was bringing me back for a show like a number of times,
- 8:34which I was really pumped about. And I once I got about halfway
- 8:41through my pregnancy, I had some really difficult complications.
- 8:45Thankfully, my baby was fine, but I ended up on modified bed
- 8:49rest for most of my third trimester.
- 8:52And so that curbed any acting opportunities, obviously because
- 8:57I was not feeling great. And so, so I auditioned as long
- 9:01as I was able to and then had to just say, OK, well, I guess I'm
- 9:06going to like sit this out until I'm feel ready again.
- 9:11And my reps were understanding about that, of course, because
- 9:13it's not something that I could really control, so.
- 9:16Yeah, so much out of our control, man.
- 9:21Then when, what? After she was born and
- 9:24everything. When did you start getting back
- 9:27into it? I think so.
- 9:32I had, I had a difficult third trimester and then I had a
- 9:35difficult physical postpartum recovery because there's some of
- 9:38the complications I was dealing with the third trimester.
- 9:40So in addition to, you know, the baby goes to the pediatrician
- 9:43like so much and those like early weeks, but I also had a
- 9:45lot of appointments and was like physically recovering.
- 9:48And so it was longer than I had expected.
- 9:51I think I was probably like, she was 5 or 6 months old before.
- 9:54I was like, OK, thumbs up. Like let's let's get back in
- 9:58into this. So it was longer than I had
- 9:59wanted or anticipated, but it was also fine because the first
- 10:02several months are like pretty intense with a little baby.
- 10:04And so the logistics made me more nervous than anything like
- 10:12going back and starting auditioning and stuff like not
- 10:15so. And when she was about 6 months
- 10:18old, this was pre pandemic, so we're still auditioning in
- 10:21person. So I was like, Oh my gosh, like
- 10:25logistically, how am I going to arrange last minute childcare
- 10:28and go to auditions and that kind of thing.
- 10:29And I, I basically built like a list of like like 6 or 7 people
- 10:34deep of close friends or people I trusted that I talked to
- 10:38about, hey, can you be on my like call list of like I got
- 10:41lost. But I understood you can come
- 10:42watch the baby for like a couple of hours.
- 10:44Like that kind of thing. Got them all kind of like I had
- 10:47like a little note in my notes app like, OK, here are my
- 10:49people. So when the audition comes, I
- 10:51can like go down my list and like find somebody to come and
- 10:54watch her for a couple hours. Because at that time my husband
- 10:57wasn't working a job where he could be working from home very
- 11:00much at all. And so that was kind of how I
- 11:03navigated it. But like, it's messy, right?
- 11:06Like about it for me personally, the newborn state, which was the
- 11:11hardest, yeah, largely not necessarily because she wasn't a
- 11:16difficult baby, but because, like I mentioned, I'd had some
- 11:19physical complications and like a rough physical recovery from
- 11:23birth. So what made it really difficult
- 11:26was that I was simultaneously juggling this massive life
- 11:30change and all the things that come with having a baby, and
- 11:32then also not feeling great at all.
- 11:35And so for me, it was brutal. Like the first, I like just
- 11:38being frank. Like the first three or four
- 11:40months were really, really hard. I had a really great Co partner
- 11:46and my husband he's, he's really good about just like getting in
- 11:49there and helping with whatever. And he was able to take like 7
- 11:52weeks off of work and so that I wouldn't have been able to do it
- 11:57without him truly. And my mom came and stayed with
- 11:59us for a while as well. So for me, the newborn stage was
- 12:02really hard. And also because I think I, I
- 12:05don't know what it's like to go from having one child to two or
- 12:07etcetera, but I, but going from none to 1 was just the most
- 12:13massive shift in my identity. Like a complete reorganization
- 12:19of all of my life priorities coupled with like the huge love
- 12:25that you feel, but also the exhaustion, but also the, you
- 12:28know what I mean? Like it truly like was a seismic
- 12:31shift. And so all of that at once made
- 12:34the newborn phase really, really hard.
- 12:36In my personal opinion. I have friends who are like,
- 12:39love the newborn phase. They sailed through it, no
- 12:42breastfeeding issues at all. And they're just like, I could
- 12:45snuggle them forever. I'm like, Oh my God, that I you
- 12:48could not pay me to relive that three months of my life.
- 12:50Like you just couldn't. Whereas for me, my favorite
- 12:54favorite was like 1 to 1 1/2 is just the best cuz they're still
- 13:00cute, squishy, they have some baby qualities, but they're also
- 13:02babbling and like running around and you're getting some other
- 13:05personality more and they're not doing like the toddler tantrums
- 13:09quite yet. Like where they go like nuclear
- 13:11on you out of nowhere. So it's like it's just, it's
- 13:13kind of best of both worlds. You get like the best of the
- 13:15baby stuff and like the best of the toddler stuff like at the
- 13:17same time. So for me that was together, it
- 13:21was the best. Like I always hesitate about
- 13:24like how honest I should because I don't.
- 13:26I'll explain. Up until a year ago, it wasn't
- 13:30even really screen writing wasn't really on my radar.
- 13:32Like I had written a short that we'd filmed while I was pregnant
- 13:35with Reese. It had nothing to do with me
- 13:36being pregnant and I was still early enough that it didn't like
- 13:39you couldn't tell. And so and I started writing a
- 13:45feature was pregnant with her that I never finished.
- 13:48So I just kind of come to the conclusion like, you know what,
- 13:50acting is a lot. Acting while being mom is a lot.
- 13:53I don't I don't really know. Screaming for me.
- 13:57And then the stars kind of aligned in a long time industry
- 14:00contact of mine and a friend got a job in creative development
- 14:06for made for TV romantic comedies.
- 14:08He knew that I knew that genre really well.
- 14:10He knew my writing, he knew my acting.
- 14:13And he was like, hey, I just got this new job.
- 14:16I'm putting together a slate of writers.
- 14:19This is like last December. And he was like, if you ever
- 14:21wanted to pitch anything, you know, let me know.
- 14:24And I was like, kind of like, thanks, but no thanks.
- 14:27Like I'm good. Like I'm.
- 14:27Really, right? You know what I mean?
- 14:29Like I just didn't really seize that opportunity initially.
- 14:32But the more that I thought about it, I kind of had this
- 14:33like niggling like, well, maybe. And so I started to put together
- 14:38titles and log lines of like several ideas that I had and
- 14:40just like floated them to him. Like, is this in the ballpark of
- 14:44what you would be interested in? And he was like, yes, this is
- 14:47exactly in the ballpark. Long story short, I ended up I
- 14:51ended up formally pitching a feature concept in January of
- 14:57this year and he forwarded it to his boss and they bought it and
- 15:04so I. That's amazing.
- 15:07It was it was truly like mind blowing.
- 15:09And so I then embarked on writing this feature film that
- 15:13had been purchased and they, so I wrote it in the spring and
- 15:18they shot it in the summer. And then I just a few weeks ago
- 15:22pitched and sold another feature concept and I'm now writing that
- 15:26for them. So.
- 15:28That's incredible. It was like a thank you.
- 15:30It was a very, very unexpected shift into something new that
- 15:34has been really wonderful and like life giving and great that
- 15:37I just really didn't see coming at all.
- 15:40So yeah, that's yeah. And I had to tell a story.
- 15:43And I hesitate to be honest, because I know many people
- 15:47really fight for those kinds of opportunities for many years.
- 15:50It'd be kind of like if I had a friend who was like, I'm going
- 15:51to try acting, and then their first audition was like a series
- 15:55regular and they booked it. I'd be like, yeah, are you
- 15:57kidding me? And so I I don't.
- 15:58It's the same thing with becoming pregnant where you're
- 16:00like, yes. Just happened I don't want to be
- 16:03a jerk, but like that's just how it happens that's how it happens
- 16:05to me and I'm really really grateful and and now screen
- 16:10writing full time basically in addition to acting and content
- 16:12creating so so. Yeah, how do you do all of that?
- 16:18Do you and like your content you're always putting out
- 16:22content which thank you, I thoroughly enjoy.
- 16:24I'm so. Glad please.
- 16:26Please continue. Where do you find the Do you
- 16:31sleep? Do you eat?
- 16:33I don't. I'm all like.
- 16:36Hello Brass Tacks. Is that once I sold the second
- 16:42feature concept, we decided we are going to put my daughter in
- 16:44full time preschool because I was like, I have a full time
- 16:47workload now and I need full time support.
- 16:49And now that I'm being paid, I can do that, you know what I
- 16:53mean? So for me as a, as a mom,
- 16:55frankly, just full time childcare is became necessary
- 16:59and we decided to go that route. So I now am in the months
- 17:04through basically it's through the end of this year have carved
- 17:06out of Monday through Friday work week for myself.
- 17:08And that gives me the time and space to write, deal with any,
- 17:13you know, tape any auditions, do any acting contactation that
- 17:17comes along. That being said, even with that
- 17:19much childcare, I, I still currently am really struggling
- 17:23to, to juggle it. Like I, I don't know that I'm
- 17:26doing it very gracefully. I just kind of, I'm like, OK, I,
- 17:30my main priority is whatever deadline I'm committed to.
- 17:33Like right now, I have a writing deadline in a couple of days.
- 17:35So like, that's priority number one.
- 17:37And then if I think of a TikTok or a real idea, then I'll film
- 17:40it really quick when I want like a little brain break from
- 17:44writing and I want to do something else.
- 17:46And as auditions come up, I'll prioritize those.
- 17:47So I don't know, this is not sponsored.
- 17:50I just like with the Snoo, it sounds like a commercial, but
- 17:54it's not. I swear my baby starts sleeping
- 17:56through the night at like 7 weeks old and like that sleep is
- 18:00life changing, you know what I mean?
- 18:01So anyway, that for me was like, listen, mom's like if you, if
- 18:05you feel like you want a Snoo, just throw down for it.
- 18:06Like just do it. The other thing that I would say
- 18:09has been hugely instrumental and really saves me is that when I
- 18:12was like 3 or 4 months postpartum and just very
- 18:16overwhelmed by all the massive changes my life had undergone, I
- 18:19sought out therapy. Like I started seeing a
- 18:22therapist and I found someone who specialized who was a mom
- 18:26and also specialized in working with women who were new moms
- 18:30because I wanted someone who had like a level of understanding
- 18:32about just the the massive shift that you undergo and truly like
- 18:38that has therapy has helped me navigate the motherhood journey
- 18:42in a huge way. So I would say that if if you're
- 18:48a mom who's feeling like you need a place to process or
- 18:52you're dealing with like mom guilt or how even just how to
- 18:55prioritize, you need someone to like be a sounding board.
- 18:57I just can't recommend therapy enough Pro.
- 19:02And that was Mommy would recut with Hannah Heinz.
- 19:07I love this conversation because it's such a good reminder that
- 19:11there isn't a clean, clear formula of balancing motherhood
- 19:15and a creative career. Sometimes it looks like late
- 19:18night self tapes, sometimes it looks like asking a friend to
- 19:21come over and watch a baby for a couple hours, and sometimes it
- 19:24looks like your career changing shape entirely.
- 19:28If you're in a season where things feel slower, different,
- 19:32or harder than they used to, you're not behind and you're not
- 19:35alone. You're just in a different
- 19:37chapter. If you connected with this
- 19:40episode, please share it with another mom in the industry.
- 19:43That's honestly how Mommy would grows.
- 19:47Make sure you're following the podcast on Instagram and TikTok
