- 0:00Hello there. My name is Tyler Griffin and
- 0:03this is Scripture Study Insights by Scripture Central.
- 0:06Today, second Nephi chapters 20 through 25.
- 0:10I'm very excited to jump into these particular chapters of our
- 0:14scripture study because this is where we finish off that last
- 0:19big chunk of Isaiah chapters and then Nephi begins to give us his
- 0:25commentary. An important thing to remember
- 0:28is that our current edition of the Book of Mormon, the way it
- 0:33has chapters and verses that didn't exist until 1879 when
- 0:38Orson Pratt took the original versions, the 1830 edition,
- 0:44where there were no chapters, there were no verses the same
- 0:47way as they are here. They had much longer chapters,
- 0:51no footnotes, and he then broke them up into smaller chapters.
- 0:56So it's important to remember that chapters 2526 and 27 are
- 1:03one complete chapter in the original Book of Mormon.
- 1:08So this seems to be Nephi's follow up commentary on what he
- 1:13just read to us or recorded on the plates rather from second
- 1:18ephi chapters 12 through 24, that big huge Isaiah chunk of of
- 1:24chapters. So if you get into chapter
- 1:2820212223 and you're confused or you're you're not making sense
- 1:33of it, the recommendation is keep pointing back to chapter
- 1:382526 and 27 and see what Nephi says about it.
- 1:42In fact, in chapter 25 after he finishes this this long section
- 1:50of Isaiah, he says now I need, if I do speak somewhat
- 1:53concerning the words which I have written, which have been
- 1:57spoken by the mouth of Isaiah. So he's he's going to give us
- 1:59this, this tutorial, this mentoring guidance on what he
- 2:05hopes that we get. And in verse four you'll notice
- 2:09he he acknowledges the fact that Isaiah is not your typical book
- 2:14of scripture as far as ease of understanding.
- 2:17And so he says, Wherefore hearken all my people which are
- 2:20of the House of Israel, and give ear unto my words.
- 2:22For because the words of Isaiah are not plain unto you,
- 2:27nevertheless they are plain unto all those that are filled with
- 2:31the spirit of prophecy. So Nephi in in this chapter he's
- 2:36giving us all of these keys to unlocking understanding in
- 2:39Isaiah. Obviously the the 1st is to
- 2:42understand the Jewish manner of prophesying in verse 1-2 and
- 2:46three, recognizing that Isaiah doesn't speak in Greek
- 2:51literalism, he speaks more in Hebrew symbolism.
- 2:55So he paints these pictures using symbols, and then he often
- 2:59repeats them, and then the invitation to pray for the
- 3:04spirit of prophecy. And then at the very bottom of
- 3:08verse four he says, I shall prophecy according to the
- 3:12plainness which has been with me from the time that I came out
- 3:15from Jerusalem with my Father. For behold, my soul delighteth
- 3:20in plainness unto my people that they may learn.
- 3:23So Nephi is saying, even though the words of Isaiah might not be
- 3:27completely plain to you because you don't understand his manner
- 3:29of prophesying or some of these other keys We're going to see
- 3:32later, he says, I'm going to speak unto you so plainly that
- 3:36you can't misunderstand. And then it's fascinating to
- 3:40note that in chapter 25 you get Christ mentioned 1819 times.
- 3:47Depending on how you how you number these multiple times,
- 3:52He's speaking very clearly, very distinctly of Jesus Christ.
- 3:59As if to say you don't have to understand all of the history,
- 4:03all of the manner of prophesying among the Jews.
- 4:06Or if we go down to verse 6, knowing concerning the region's
- 4:10roundabout, knowing all of the geography of the land from from
- 4:13whence Nephi and Lehi came, Those things help because that's
- 4:20the world. The history, the geography, the
- 4:22culture, the language, the people that is the world out of
- 4:26which these writings of Isaiah were, were created.
- 4:31But even if you don't understand that world, you can still
- 4:35understand the world that resides on the page of the
- 4:38Scripture and the world that these words create in our own
- 4:42life today with the spirit of prophecy and the spirit of
- 4:45Revelation. That's that's a beautiful
- 4:48promise given to us So very quickly, as an overview, before
- 4:53we go back and jump into chapter 20, it's important to remember
- 4:58that if you look at the geographical area over in the
- 5:05Holy Land, you get the Sea of Galilee.
- 5:09Here, Jordan River, there's the Dead Sea.
- 5:14Here's Jerusalem. It's important to remember that
- 5:17what used to be united Israel got divided in the Old
- 5:20Testament, and now Isaiah is living in the southern Kingdom
- 5:25of Judah. And above the Kingdom of Judah
- 5:29is the Kingdom of Israel, often referred to as Ephraim.
- 5:36And above the Kingdom of Israel is the Kingdom of Syria.
- 5:43And over here to the North East is the Kingdom of us Syria and
- 5:49over here to the east the Kingdom of Babylon.
- 5:54This is what is called the Fertile Crescent.
- 5:58And so they wouldn't Babylon, when they're going to conquer,
- 6:00they're not going to come probably directly W they're
- 6:03probably going to come through the more fertile parts where you
- 6:06can support an army of of men. And so here's the setup for
- 6:15everything that's happening in chapters 20 through 24.
- 6:20It's an example of these children of Israel, the House of
- 6:27Israel, rejecting God, turning their back on the Savior, on
- 6:32their Redeemer, and so him allowing different nations to
- 6:37come in. So in chapters 19 and 20 you get
- 6:43the Kingdom of Assyria who comes in.
- 6:47And remember that as Assyria is growing in their power and their
- 6:53dominion, Syria and Israel banded together and said let's
- 6:59get Judah to join us. And Judah refused.
- 7:03And so Syria and Israel banded together and said we're going to
- 7:07wipe out Judah and put a king of our choosing on the throne.
- 7:13So all of this is happening while Isaiah is the prophet in
- 7:19Jerusalem in the Kingdom of Judah at this very time.
- 7:23It's leading into 721 BC and the people are very nervous.
- 7:35What are we going to do? And I love what happens in
- 7:39chapter 2019 and 20. Actually, when Isaiah reassures
- 7:46them, he goes to the Lord, gets that reassurance, and he passes
- 7:52that on to the people that the Lord is going to help them if
- 7:56they'll just turn to him. Chapter 20 is all about King
- 8:01Sennacherib, who's the king of Assyria who has brought his
- 8:05armies. He's destroyed every Kingdom
- 8:08around him. He wiped out Syria.
- 8:11He he overcame the Kingdom of Israel and carried the 10 tribes
- 8:17captive and scattered them after killing many.
- 8:22And they're scattered among all the nations to the north.
- 8:26And then he'd come into the Kingdom of Judah, and he'd wiped
- 8:29out most of the cities except for Jerusalem, where Isaiah
- 8:34lives with King Hezekiah. And it's here in chapter 20,
- 8:41where the Lord, through the prophet Isaiah, makes it very
- 8:45clear what happens when we get so puffed up and think that
- 8:51we're the ones doing whatever it is that's that's being
- 8:55accomplished. In this case, King Sennacherib
- 8:59is congratulating himself. Notice in chapter 20, verse 13
- 9:04it says for he meaning Sennacherib saith, By the
- 9:09strength of my hand and by my wisdom, I have done these
- 9:12things. For I am prudent and I have
- 9:15moved the borders of the people and have robbed their treasures.
- 9:18And I've put down the inhabitants like a valiant man,
- 9:21and he's boasting in his accomplishments, feeling like,
- 9:27look, look how amazing I am. I love this next part because
- 9:32Isaiah flips now into this beautiful Hebrew poetic
- 9:37symbolism mode. Where he says verse 15 shall the
- 9:42axe boast itself against him that heweth therewith shall the
- 9:47saw magnify itself against him. That shaketh it as if the rod
- 9:52should shake itself against them that lifted up, or as if the
- 9:54staff should lift up itself as if it were no wood.
- 9:58He's basically reminding us if the Lord uses you as an
- 10:03instrument in His hands to accomplish his works, don't look
- 10:07at what is done and pat yourself on the back too long and feel
- 10:11too proud about what was accomplished, because there's a
- 10:15difference between being the artist and being an instrument
- 10:20in the hands of the artist. And so he makes that beautifully
- 10:24clear here in this chapter. And then if you turn over into
- 10:29Chapter 21, he describes how this House of Israel seems to
- 10:36have been cut down, wiped out, destroyed, largely other than in
- 10:40the the city of Jerusalem, that now they can start rebuilding.
- 10:45And there's this feeling that all is lost.
- 10:48Well chapter 21 talks about a rod coming forth out of the stem
- 10:54of Jesse and a branch shall grow out of his roots.
- 10:58A must have cross reference for your scriptures.
- 11:01Here is Doctrine and Covenants section 113 where Joseph is in
- 11:07AQ and a session with the Lord regarding many things here in
- 11:13chapter 21 or the equivalent Isaiah Chapter 11.
- 11:17So if you want to understand Chapter 21 symbolism better,
- 11:21then you use the resources given to us in Restoration Scripture,
- 11:26specifically in this case, Section 113.
- 11:29Now before we jump into Chapter 22, it's important to note here
- 11:36how easy it is to get caught up in history, in geography, in
- 11:43culture, in that world that is living underneath the
- 11:47scriptures. That is the foundation of these
- 11:51scriptures that created these words that we now have.
- 11:54And if we're not careful, we'll get so caught up in the history
- 11:58that we'll miss the fact that it's all about the Saviour,
- 12:04Jesus Christ, doing his work. It's really his story.
- 12:12So instead of just seeing people and wars and conquests, it's
- 12:18much more easily easy to liken the scriptures to us.
- 12:24If we can find him in these these pages, that it's really
- 12:30his story. And then it's easier to
- 12:33translate it into the world that we live and see our story, where
- 12:41we can see Jesus Christ, what He's doing for us as he
- 12:47delivered those who turned to him in Jerusalem in 721 BC, who
- 12:55felt like the whole world was crushing in on them and there
- 12:58was no hope for deliverance. As they turned heavenward, all
- 13:01of a sudden they discovered there was deliverance.
- 13:06And as we read these stories today, the power of Isaiah is
- 13:12that it can be repeated over time.
- 13:15These these prophecies, they can, they're dualistic in that
- 13:19they can be fulfilled in His day, they can be fulfilled in
- 13:22Jesus day, they can be fulfilled in our day and in the future as
- 13:27well, repeatedly. And the the secret to unlocking
- 13:33that, according to Nephi's interpretation, is Jesus Christ,
- 13:38who is mentioned more than any any other chapter.
- 13:41When you get to chapter 25, he's He's showing us what I just read
- 13:45to you. You should be seeing the
- 13:47fingerprints of the Lord throughout this entire story
- 13:52that was just told. Which now brings us to chapter
- 13:5622. After the children of Israel are
- 14:00carried captive, the 10 tribes and the Kingdom of Judah is was
- 14:07besieged but finally delivered. Look at the last verse of
- 14:11chapter 21. And there shall be a highway for
- 14:15the remnant of his people, which shall be left from Assyria, like
- 14:20as it was to Israel in the day that he came up out of the land
- 14:23of Egypt. So he's making this promise that
- 14:27as we brought the children of Israel into the promised land
- 14:30from Egypt, we're going to have a highway out of Assyria, that
- 14:36they're going to be brought back again.
- 14:39And verse one of chapter 22. In that day thou shalt say, O
- 14:45Lord, I will praise thee, Thou wast angry with me.
- 14:48Thine anger is turned away and thou comfortest me.
- 14:52Now here is this beautiful, layered perspective in Isaiah's
- 14:58writings. He is an amazing historian, but
- 15:02he's even a better seer. So he's able to tell the story
- 15:07from his day and from his time period that the Lord is going to
- 15:11do all of these incredible things and there's going to be
- 15:14this peace that is going to be brought among the people back in
- 15:17his day. But the the events of his day
- 15:23are now lenses through which we can look into the future of the
- 15:29Millennium. So you'll notice in our chapter
- 15:31heading of Chapter 22, it says in the millennial day, all men
- 15:34shall praise the Lord. He shall dwell among them.
- 15:38So it's this beautiful chapter of hope.
- 15:42If you struggle to understand Isaiah, read chapter 22 because
- 15:47it's one of the simple it's it's the shortest, it's one of the
- 15:50simplest to understand and it is filled with peace and mercy and
- 15:57compassion from Christ as He's delivering and gathering His
- 16:03people back into their lands of promise for them.
- 16:09So as you read the six verses of chapter 22, it's it's this hope
- 16:15filled promise for a millennial day that has been fulfilled at
- 16:22other times in history but will ultimately find its fulfillment
- 16:25when Christ comes to reign personally upon the earth.
- 16:29And when people will say verse 2, Behold, God is my salvation.
- 16:36I will trust and not be afraid for the Lord.
- 16:39Jehovah is my strength and my song.
- 16:41He has also become my salvation. I love that people are now
- 16:47looking to God, to the the Lord, God of heaven, the Redeemer, to
- 16:53save them, rather than looking to the might of men and armies
- 17:00and nations of the earth. Through the history of time, how
- 17:03people have looked to those things, and we've seen how that
- 17:07history played out. And so as you read the rest of
- 17:12those verses in Chapter 22, it's a beautiful foreshadowing of not
- 17:17just what the people in the Millennium are going to
- 17:19experience, but what we today can experience more fully as we
- 17:26trust more and more and more in the Lord God to be our deliverer
- 17:33from these conquering Assyrian armies in whatever form they may
- 17:38take in our world and in our day, which now shifts us forward
- 17:44into Chapter 23 and 24, which is all about Babylon.
- 17:49So Isaiah is writing from about 7:40 to to 701 BC with this King
- 17:55Sennacherib and Assyrian conquest right there in the
- 17:58middle at 721. And now we shift to the time
- 18:04period of Babylon, which is 600 BC, the time of Lehigh, about
- 18:12100 years after Isaiah. This is beautiful because now
- 18:16what you have is instead of Isaiah being just a historian
- 18:21telling you about what's going on in his day, he's now being a
- 18:25seer looking forward into the future 100 plus years.
- 18:31Babylon takes over the region, this, this Fertile Crescent
- 18:36area. They become the world's
- 18:37dominating power and they are fighting against the the Kingdom
- 18:44of Judah who has banded with Egypt to try to deliver them.
- 18:49They've they've looked to the Egyptians rather than looking to
- 18:53God. And this is at the time of
- 18:56Lehigh when he's doing his preaching time of Jeremiah
- 18:58Ezekiel, Daniel. This is all their their day and
- 19:04age. So when you read chapter 23 and
- 19:0724, put on your historical lenses of this time period of
- 19:13Babylon coming to destroy them. And it's amazing to watch this
- 19:20story play out, these people who have said we don't want you to
- 19:25be our God, we want to rely on the Egyptians.
- 19:28And these other things are going to get our devotion, not God.
- 19:34And so he allows Babylon to come and take them over.
- 19:38But then in chapter 23 you get the fall of Babylon.
- 19:44And then in 24 you get Isaiah's taunt song.
- 19:48He's saying things like verse 10.
- 19:52All they shall speak and say unto thee, Art thou also become
- 19:55weak as we art? Thou become, like unto us the
- 19:59world power. The the nation that conquered
- 20:02all of the other nations in that time period, that was flexing
- 20:06its might and its muscle, saying we are the best.
- 20:10And he's saying you've, you've fallen down, you've become like
- 20:14unto us. Keep in mind Babylon, it is is
- 20:18one of the wonders of the world, the Hanging Gardens of Babylon.
- 20:22It is glorious, this Kingdom that was set up, but it becomes
- 20:28so proud and haughty that it falls.
- 20:32So notice the comparison that Isaiah makes with Babylon, the
- 20:37king of Babylon. He says, verse 12.
- 20:40How art thou fallen from heaven? O Lucifer, son of the morning,
- 20:44art thou cut down to the ground, which did weaken the nations?
- 20:49So he's comparing the fall of the king of Babylon to the fall
- 20:53of Lucifer, cut down from the heavens.
- 20:57Why was he cut down? It's because he said in his
- 21:01heart. I will ascend into heaven.
- 21:04I will exalt my throne above the stars of God.
- 21:07I will sit down upon the mount of the congregation and the
- 21:10sides of the north. I will ascend above the heights
- 21:13of the clouds. I will be like the Most High.
- 21:16So it's this self, self aggrandizement.
- 21:22And then the the promised outcome is verse 16.
- 21:25They that see thee shall narrowly look upon thee, and
- 21:29shall consider thee, and shall say is is this the man narrowly
- 21:34look upon thee invokes this idea of of furrowed brow of slits
- 21:42looking at somebody narrowly saying, kind of in shock, Is
- 21:46this the man that made the earth to tremble and did shake
- 21:51kingdoms? Really this is him, that's all
- 21:53there is to him. And it's this taunting song to
- 21:57show the reality of the majesty of God and the nothingness of
- 22:03the kingdoms of the world and the devil.
- 22:07Ultimately in comparison to what God can do.
- 22:10Verse 27 For the Lord of hosts hath purposed and who shall dis
- 22:17annul? And his hand is stretched out.
- 22:20Who shall turn it back? When God's hand is mentioned in
- 22:25the scriptures, His hand is stretched out still.
- 22:28It's usually in the context of delivering either reward or
- 22:33punishment for having kept or broken his covenant.
- 22:38So if his hand is stretched out, nobody is going to turn back
- 22:43what is about to come. It's a natural spiritual
- 22:46consequence, either good or bad, depending on how we have
- 22:51responded to those covenant connections that He's offered
- 22:55us. Now that brings us back to
- 22:57chapter 25, where we begin again.
- 23:01The keys to unlocking Isaiah are on this the these first eight or
- 23:07910 pages, or 10 verses rather. Look at verse 8.
- 23:13Wherefore they the words of Isaiah are of worth unto the
- 23:17children of men, and he that supposes that they are not unto
- 23:19them I will speak particularly and confine the words unto mine
- 23:23own people. For I know that they shall be of
- 23:25great worth unto them in the last days, for in that day shall
- 23:32they understand them. Wherefore for their good have I
- 23:35written them? I love that.
- 23:38Here's Nephi doing what Isaiah did, speaking prophetically as a
- 23:42seer, looking forward to the last day, saying, ah, in the
- 23:46last days, those people will love the words of Isaiah because
- 23:52they'll be more plain to understand that they'll get
- 23:54them. Why?
- 23:55Because many of the prophecies that he talked about will find
- 23:57ultimate fulfillment not just in Isaiah's history, but especially
- 24:03in the time of Christ. And in the last days, you're
- 24:06going to more easily see the hand of God.
- 24:09Which now brings us to the overview of these these
- 24:16concluding chapters that Nephi gives us chapter 2526 and 27,
- 24:22telling us here's what I wanted you to get out of Isaiah, and if
- 24:26we look carefully, it can be divided this way.
- 24:30Chapter 25, verse 12 through 20 is a retelling of Nephi showing
- 24:40us how Christ is rejected by his own his own people in his own
- 24:48time over in Jerusalem. How they turned their back on
- 24:54him. We've seen it in the writings of
- 24:56Isaiah how the the people in the Kingdom of Israel and many in
- 25:01the Kingdom of Judah rejected him and turned their back on him
- 25:05and what happened and how he was merciful and restored them and
- 25:09brought them back through Cyrus, the king of Persia.
- 25:14But that cycle keeps repeating. Then they reject him again and
- 25:18then he himself comes. And so when you're studying
- 25:21chapter 25, verse 12 through 20, notice all of these incredible
- 25:27statements that Nephi is going to make regarding how Christ is
- 25:31rejected by his own. Then in chapter 25, verse 21 all
- 25:40the way down through 26 verse 11.
- 25:43And remember these chapter breaks that we have added by
- 25:47Orson Pratt 1879 edition, they're they're different than
- 25:52the chapter breaks Nephi made. So there would have been no no
- 25:57separation between chapter 25 and 26 as far as Nephi is
- 26:01concerned. It's one continuous thought.
- 26:03So in 26 up through 26, verse 11, you get the rejection of
- 26:10Christ by the Nephites. So here's Nephi writing this
- 26:16book, writing these words of Isaiah, glorying in the
- 26:20plainness of the prophecies of Jesus Christ, and then in Vision
- 26:24he's showing how his own people are going to turn their back on
- 26:30Christ and reject him. And then in chapter 26, verse
- 26:3512, through all the way down through the end of chapter 27,
- 26:42and we're going to add 28 and 29 because it includes so much
- 26:49more. He he extends it this book
- 26:52written for our day. He shows how many people in the
- 26:58latter days are going to reject the Christ and turn to other
- 27:05other sources for their inspiration and for their hoped
- 27:09deliverance. So come back now to chapter 25
- 27:16and let's look at a couple of of key verses to to finish this
- 27:22off, let's jump into verse 19. For according to the words of
- 27:27the prophets, the Messiah cometh in 600 years from the time that
- 27:30my father left Jerusalem. And according to the words of
- 27:33the prophets and also the word of the Angel of God, his name
- 27:37shall be Jesus Christ, the Son of God.
- 27:42This this page has more reference to Jesus Christ by
- 27:46name, by title than any other page of Scripture.
- 27:50It is everywhere. Chapter 25 is saturated with the
- 27:56Lord Jesus Christ, which isn't that interesting me if I just
- 28:00got finished reading these multiple chapters of Isaiah and
- 28:06now he's mentioning Christ more than anywhere else in Scripture,
- 28:11in high higher density than anywhere else in Scripture.
- 28:15I think that's the pattern we should look for when we're
- 28:18studying. Isaiah is to keep looking for
- 28:21our connections with Christ, to see his hand, his fingerprints
- 28:26on the stories that we're reading on the page.
- 28:29Then he goes on to say in verse 23, we labour diligently to
- 28:33write, to persuade our children and also our brethren to believe
- 28:36in Christ and to be reconciled to God.
- 28:41For we know that it is by grace that we are saved after all we
- 28:46can do. So if you take all those Isaiah
- 28:49chapters, all these stories of conquests and deliverance and
- 28:53scatterings and gatherings, to recognize it in that context,
- 28:58here's Nephi's statement. We know that it is by grace that
- 29:02we are saved after all that we can do.
- 29:05You can assemble your armies. You can build your cities, You
- 29:09can build up kingdoms, but after all that you can do everything
- 29:13you can try to do. Salvation only comes through
- 29:18Jesus Christ. Our hope and our deliverance is
- 29:22only found in him. And so this most famous verse
- 29:2826. We talk of Christ.
- 29:30We rejoice in Christ. We preach of Christ.
- 29:34We prophecy of Christ. And we write according to our
- 29:38prophecies that our children may know to what source they may
- 29:40look for remission of their sins, brothers and sisters.
- 29:47We may not have an Assyrian army led by King Sennacherib coming
- 29:53into our neighborhood. We may not have the King of
- 29:59Babylon coming in and destroying our city and and burning our
- 30:04temples, but we have a lot of opposition.
- 30:09There's a lot of sin, there's a lot of discouragement.
- 30:14There are a lot of problems. There are a lot of challenges
- 30:18that every one of us face. And I love this, this verse, I
- 30:24love this whole chapter. I love, I love what Nephi's done
- 30:29with Isaiah to point us to Christ so that our thoughts, our
- 30:35devotion, our trust, our faith is rooted in the only place
- 30:42where we have hope for deliverance, and that is in
- 30:45Christ. I love him with all my heart,
- 30:49and I'm grateful for his tender mercies in my life and in the
- 30:54life of my family, to help us overcome these struggles and
- 30:59these conflicts, both internal and external difficulties, that
- 31:06we face. It's all through Christ that we
- 31:09have hope. I love him, and I want to to
- 31:15more than ever before, after a study of Isaiah, to be able to
- 31:19say with all my heart, I want thee to be my God, and I want to
- 31:25be thy Son, a child of the covenant, a disciple of Christ.
- 31:32And I leave that with you in the name Jesus Christ.
- 31:35Amen. Know that you're loved.
