- 0:12Hello friends, it's Sean here. Great to have your company on
- 0:16this Wednesday, the 7th of May. And you know what it's like when
- 0:20you're just settling into something and then it's over
- 0:22before you really worked out that it started.
- 0:24Well, it feels like that's what's going on with this book.
- 0:27Here we are today, only the third day of reading the second
- 0:30letter from Peter, and he's wrapping it up.
- 0:33It's going to finish with his final words of greeting to these
- 0:36Christians around the world. And this is the day that he gets
- 0:41into laser focus, the fact that, yes, Jesus is indeed coming
- 0:46back. And that changes everything in
- 0:48the way that we live our lives. And that's pretty important for
- 0:52us to hear because I don't know about you, but my typical day
- 0:55does not include apocalyptic ideas about the end of the
- 0:59world, my own death, and these sorts of issues.
- 1:02We're pretty good in our little world of hiding and forgetting
- 1:05about all those things and focusing instead on the
- 1:08important big things. And maybe they're not so
- 1:11important, but loud things of our lives.
- 1:14So this is a great little reminder today that this life is
- 1:18but a blink before the eternity that we will spend with our Lord
- 1:24and each other in worship. Isn't that great?
- 1:27So friends, Are you ready? Let us wrap up this little book
- 1:30as we read together the final chapter, Second Peter chapter 3.
- 1:45This is my second letter to you, dear friends, and in both of
- 1:49them I've tried to stimulate your wholesome thinking and
- 1:53refresh your memory. I want you to remember what the
- 1:57Holy Prophet said long ago and what our Lord and Saviour
- 2:01commanded through your apostles. Most importantly, I want to
- 2:07remind you that in these last days, scoffers will come,
- 2:12mocking the truth and following their own desires.
- 2:15They will say what happened to the promises that Jesus is
- 2:19coming again from before the times of our ancestors.
- 2:23Everything has remained the same since the world was first
- 2:26created. They deliberately forgot that
- 2:30God made the heavens long ago by the word of His command, and He
- 2:36brought the earth out from the water and surrounded it with
- 2:39water. Then He used the water to
- 2:42destroy the ancient world of the mighty flood.
- 2:45And by the same word, the present heavens and earth have
- 2:49been stored up for fire. They are being kept for the Day
- 2:54of Judgement, when ungodly people will be destroyed.
- 2:58But you must not forget this one thing, dear friends.
- 3:03A day is like 1000 years to the Lord, and 1000 years is like a
- 3:08day. The Lord isn't really being slow
- 3:12about His promise as some people think.
- 3:14No, He is being patient for your sake.
- 3:18He does not want anyone to be destroyed, but wants everyone to
- 3:22repent. But the day of the Lord will
- 3:25come as unexpectedly as a thief. Then the heavens will pass away
- 3:32with a terrible noise, and the very elements themselves will
- 3:36disappear in fire, and the earth and everything on it will be
- 3:41found to deserve judgement. Since everything around us is
- 3:45going to be destroyed like this, what holy and godly lives you
- 3:50should live looking forward to the day of God and hurrying it
- 3:54along. On that day He will set the
- 3:58heavens on fire, and the elements will melt away in the
- 4:03flames. But we are looking forward to
- 4:06the new heavens and new earth as He has promised, a world filled
- 4:12with God's righteousness. And so, dear friends, while you
- 4:16were waiting for these things to happen, make every effort to be
- 4:20found living peaceful lives that are pure and blameless in His
- 4:25sight. And remember, our Lord's
- 4:29patience gives people time to be saved.
- 4:32This is what our beloved brother Paul also wrote to you with the
- 4:36wisdom God gave him Speaking of these things in all of his
- 4:40letters. Some of his comments are hard to
- 4:43understand, and those who are ignorant and unstable have
- 4:47twisted his letters to mean something quite different, just
- 4:51as they do with other parts of Scripture, and this will result
- 4:55in their destruction. You already know these things,
- 4:59dear friends, so be on guard. Then you will not be carried
- 5:05away by the errors of these wicked people and lose your own
- 5:08secure footing. Rather, you must grow in the
- 5:12grace and knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.
- 5:19All glory to Him both now and forever.
- 5:24Amen. Jesus, the only lasting thing in
- 5:38this life of ours is our relationship with You.
- 5:43Everything else will be consumed by fire.
- 5:46Everything else has a use by date which is fast approaching.
- 5:51It's all about you, Jesus. It's all about our heart resting
- 5:56in Your embrace. Oh, just make that message so
- 6:00clear to us so that as we go about our lives, we can continue
- 6:05to place You at the heart of all that we think and do and plan.
- 6:12Our lives are yours, Lord. Use them in whatever way you see
- 6:17fit, because this is just such a temporary moment in the time
- 6:22space continuum. And we do look forward, even
- 6:26though it sounds terrifying with the world being consumed by
- 6:29fire. Lord, we look forward to the day
- 6:31when all of the challenges of this life just evaporate around
- 6:36us, and all that is left is your warm and loving embrace, which
- 6:42will make everything else pale into insignificance.
- 6:47Ah, we love you and we are so grateful that we are loved by
- 6:52You. And so we your servants, pray
- 6:56all of this in your loving name, Jesus, Amen.
