• 1:37
Speaker 2: Well, the Granbury thing, I think we're going to be back in the studio for one episode, and then we go to.
• 1:40
Speaker 1: Granbury, yes, yes, and that particular episode that we're going to be in the studio.
• 1:44
Speaker 1: After that I'll be leaving to go to Denver.
• 1:50
Speaker 1: So I'm going to go from Houston to Dallas, catch an airplane from Dallas to Denver, go and visit my Katie in Denver for five days.
• 2:07
Speaker 1: The Thursday night of my visit there we're going to Red Rocks oh Red.
• 2:11
  Speaker 2: Rocks.
• 2:12
Speaker 1: And we're going to see Brit Floyd, brit Floyd, brit Floyd, great concert.

Speaker 1: Turn that in and catch the plane back from Denver to Dallas, get in the car, go to Dallas, to Granbury and meet you guys there for the Saturday morning broadcast.
• 2:43
  Speaker 1: It's a lot.
• 2:43
Speaker 1: Yeah, take your passport, make sure you get it stamped on the Saturday morning broadcast.
• 2:45
  Speaker 2: It's a lot.
• 2:45
Speaker 1: Yeah, take your passport, make sure you get it stamped on the way Exactly, and don't hang out at those corner pot shops In Dallas.
• 2:55
Speaker 1: No, not in Dallas.
• 2:57
Speaker 1: I know what you're talking about.
• 2:59
Speaker 1: The pot shops in Denver.
• 3:00
Speaker 1: Oh, they're called dispensaries, they're pot shops.
• 3:04
Speaker 1: Okay, all right, you can call them what you want, but they're pot shops.
• 3:08
Speaker 2: All righty If I give you a list, could you?
• 3:12
  Speaker 2: No?
• 3:13
Speaker 1: No, I'm not going to do that, but I will tell you that when I last visited up there I don't know four or five years ago, katie said Dad, you ever been to a dispensary?
• 3:23
Speaker 1: I said no, would you like to go?
• 3:26
  Speaker 1: I said, sure, I don't care, let's go.
• 3:29
Speaker 1: So she takes me to a dispensary and what it appeared to me originally it was an old 7-Eleven, a nice big kind of 7-Eleven, stand-alone 7-Eleven, no gas pumps or none of that.
• 3:45
Speaker 1: Right, I was for lack of a better term, blown away by what I saw in there.
• 3:53
Speaker 1: I mean, I couldn't believe it, and so I guess there was the manager or something.
• 3:57
Speaker 1: Well, let me explain the layout here and how it works.
• 4:01
Speaker 1: And I had to go through this screening process.
• 4:04
  Speaker 2: Oh sure.
• 4:05
Speaker 1: And they odd thing I mean I didn't even think about it they were more concerned about because I was with Katie, just she and I.
• 4:13
Speaker 1: They made it a point to tell us that I cannot buy any weed for her and she can't buy any weed for me.
• 4:25
Speaker 1: And what they were trying to prevent is going in there and buying up a bunch of weed and then, I guess, going out and selling it, being a dealer, if you buy it for somebody else, oh, I got you I didn't buy anything.
• 4:39
Speaker 1: Clearly I wasn't in the market for anything that the weed shop had to offer.
• 4:45
Speaker 2: You just wanted experience, because you'd never been, I'd never been.
• 4:47
Speaker 1: I had no clue.
• 4:48
Speaker 1: What's inside of a weed shop?
• 4:50
Speaker 1: You know some guy, you know they're smoking a big fatty or something in the corner.
• 4:54
  Speaker 1: I didn't know, I had no clue.
• 4:56
Speaker 1: But oh no, it's all divided up into departments and paraphernalia and it's like a Macy's of pot, like the shoe department, the men's department, the lingerie department.
• 5:11
Speaker 1: I was like are you kidding me?
• 5:13
Speaker 1: And there's one of these things on every corner there.
• 5:16
Speaker 1: Wow, it's truly amazing.
• 5:18
Speaker 3: All right, Enough of my pot story.
• 5:20
Speaker 3: Go ahead, mr Mars.
• 5:21
Speaker 3: Well, it just reminded me of taking my wife to New Orleans and going in some of the places down there and I said we just need to go in here so we can experience it.
• 5:29
Speaker 2: New Orleans has that too.
• 5:30
Speaker 2: How'd that work out with Becky?
• 5:31
Speaker 2: It didn't work out very well at all.
• 5:35
Speaker 1: One and we were done.
• 5:36
Speaker 1: Everybody wanted to know did I buy anything there?
• 5:38
Speaker 1: No, I didn't buy anything there.
• 5:40
Speaker 1: No, I didn't buy anything there.
• 5:41
Speaker 1: I'm not in the market for pot, but I guess that there are a lot of people that are.
• 5:46
  Speaker 3: Medicinal purposes only.
• 5:48
Speaker 2: And here to save us from this conversation is officer.
• 5:54
Speaker 3: Stan Tripp is the vice president of the Lone Star Region Porsche Club of America.
• 5:59
Speaker 2: Did I get all that out, stan?
• 6:01
Speaker 2: I had to write it down, that's right.
• 6:05
Speaker 3: So this is your event?
• 6:06
Speaker 3: No, it's not this event.
• 6:08
Speaker 3: We are, I guess, co-sponsors, but the gentleman that owns Gulf Coast.
• 6:14
Speaker 2: John, it's his event.
• 6:16
Speaker 2: Yeah, it's his event, but you're providing support.
• 6:19
Speaker 2: You're the club Right Providing support.
• 6:20
  Speaker 1: You're the club.
• 6:21
Speaker 1: Let's move beyond that, because I have questions.
• 6:23
Speaker 1: How long have you been a Porsche guy?
• 6:26
  Speaker 3: All your life.
• 6:27
Speaker 3: No Well, I've loved Porsches all my life.
• 6:30
Speaker 1: Well, we all have.
• 6:31
Speaker 3: I didn't buy one until 2017, and that's when I joined the Porsche Club.
• 6:35
  Speaker 1: Seriously yes.
• 6:36
Speaker 3: What did you have before Muscle cars?
• 6:39
Speaker 3: Mainly Old Shelbys and Mustangs, and Cobras.
• 6:45
  Speaker 1: So you're a muscle man.
• 6:47
Speaker 2: I am, yeah, yeah, I got that.
• 6:49
Speaker 1: So what made you dip your toe into the Porsche world?
• 6:53
Speaker 3: Well, I always loved them.
• 6:56
Speaker 1: Had you ever ridden in them before you had any experience?
• 6:58
Speaker 3: Yes, yes, I'd ridden in them and growing up had neighbors that had them and I just loved them and always wanted one.
• 7:06
Speaker 3: But I always thought, oh, they're so complicated, I don't want to buy a car that's that complicated.
• 7:11
Speaker 3: I knew muscle cars, right, right.
• 7:13
Speaker 3: So I figured I can work on those and I do like to work on the cars.
• 7:16
Speaker 3: And finally I was looking through, I was on the internet.
• 7:20
Speaker 3: My wife comes over my shoulder and says what are you looking at?
• 7:23
Speaker 3: And I said, oh, porsches.
• 7:24
Speaker 3: And she says porn.
• 7:26
Speaker 3: She says car porn essentially, but she said why don't you get one?
• 7:31
Speaker 3: So this was after I retired, so it was sort of a retirement gift.
• 7:35
Speaker 2: You have to act fast.
• 7:36
Speaker 2: When you get that opening, you know you got to jump on it.
• 7:37
Speaker 3: Exactly yeah, exactly yeah.
• 7:39
Speaker 3: So, and what did you buy?
• 7:41
  Speaker 3: I bought a 911 GTS.
• 7:45
Speaker 1: Oh, my Well, isn't that like top of the line?
• 7:47
  Speaker 3: 911?
• 7:48
Speaker 3: No, it's not, there are others.
• 7:54
  Speaker 1: There's the GT cars, gt3s and GT3RSs.
• 7:55
Speaker 3: Okay so what makes it a GTS?
• 7:56
Speaker 3: Gts has a little more power than the S.
• 7:59
Speaker 3: Okay, there's a base model, an S model and a GTS, and GTS has a little bit different suspension and a little more power.
• 8:07
Speaker 3: So it's a little hot rodder.
• 8:09
  Speaker 3: It is yes.
• 8:10
Speaker 1: More so than the base one.
• 8:12
  Speaker 3: Yes, yeah, okay.
• 8:13
Speaker 3: Now do you drive it every day.
• 8:15
  Speaker 3: I don't.
• 8:16
Speaker 3: It's sort of my toy.
• 8:18
Speaker 3: I take it out on the track occasionally I was just going to ask you that and drive it to events like this.
• 8:25
Speaker 3: And we're going to a National Porsche Club event in Birmingham, alabama, here in June and we'll drive that.
• 8:31
Speaker 1: My mother's side of the family is from Birmingham.
• 8:33
Speaker 1: My youngest daughter is Roll Tide.
• 8:37
Speaker 3: Well, I'm a Buckeye, so I'm not sure.
• 8:41
Speaker 3: Okay, we'll agree All over.
• 8:43
Speaker 1: You're the one that's going, not me.
• 8:45
Speaker 1: Okay, so you're going to take this car Is your?
• 8:52
Speaker 3: wife going with you, she is going with me.
• 8:54
Speaker 3: This will be the first time for either of us to attend an event like this, a national event.
• 8:58
Speaker 2: Is she here with you today?
• 9:00
  Speaker 3: She's not no.
• 9:02
Speaker 1: Does she know that she's going to go to this event?
• 9:04
Speaker 3: She does now, surprise, she does, and of course the question's always well, what do I bring to where?
• 9:12
  Speaker 3: What am I?
• 9:13
Speaker 1: going to be doing, of course, yeah.
• 9:16
Speaker 3: A thought that never even occurred to me, but anyway, that's a woman.
• 9:20
Speaker 3: Does she drive it she has?
• 9:23
Speaker 3: She doesn't normally, so she doesn't really enjoy the driving, although she does have a Macan S and she loves that car.
• 9:30
Speaker 3: So wait a minute.
• 9:32
Speaker 1: You didn't spring that on us to the very beginning.
• 9:34
Speaker 2: So this is a.
• 9:34
Speaker 3: Porsche, his and hers.
• 9:35
Speaker 1: Family, yes, yes, wow, did she have hers first?
• 9:37
Speaker 2: She did yes, yes, Wow, did she have hers first.
• 9:41
  Speaker 3: She did.
• 9:41
Speaker 3: Actually, we were out looking for a new car and I made the mistake, I guess you'd say of taking her to the Porsche dealership and she drove the Macan S and she said I love this.
• 9:53
  Speaker 3: I said why?
• 9:54
Speaker 3: And she says well, the navigation's intuitive and it doesn't push against the back of my head, the headrest doesn't push against the back of my head.
• 10:03
  Speaker 3: Yes, exactly.
• 10:04
Speaker 2: I have that same feature.
• 10:08
Speaker 1: Well, isn't that interesting, both of you guys, and she was the one that started off.
• 10:15
Speaker 3: this thing she did, and I didn't join the Porsche Club whenever we got her car because I thought, well, it's just a.
• 10:21
Speaker 3: Suv so it wasn't a sports car, so to speak.
• 10:25
Speaker 1: Yeah, so now, do you still have any other?
• 10:27
Speaker 1: Your old cars that you, your muscle?
• 10:29
  Speaker 3: cars, I do.
• 10:30
  Speaker 3: I have a superformance cobra.
• 10:32
Speaker 3: Oh, I'd love to drive that, I love to drive that.
• 10:37
Speaker 3: So it's a lot of it's a lot of fun it weighs nothing and it has nothing but horsepower.
• 10:42
Speaker 3: Yes, yeah very visceral and, uh, it's fun.
• 10:46
Speaker 3: I can take it anywhere and no matter what kind of cars around, people want to come absolutely exactly so.
• 10:52
  Speaker 2: It's very unique.
• 10:52
Speaker 2: You say you retired, what did you retire?
• 10:54
  Speaker 3: from.
• 10:55
Speaker 3: I'd worked for an oil company and then a chemical company.
• 10:58
Speaker 3: Okay, so I had a career in that industry Very good, so mostly overseas, and then back here in the United States from 2010 until 2017.
• 11:09
  Speaker 3: Nice.
• 11:10
  Speaker 2: Yeah, very good.
• 11:12
  Speaker 3: Very nice.
• 11:13
Speaker 1: And now did you have to?
• 11:15
Speaker 3: drive a ways to get here.
• 11:17
  Speaker 3: I didn't.
• 11:18
Speaker 3: I live in Sugar Land, oh, you do.
• 11:20
Speaker 3: So it was an easy place.
• 11:24
Speaker 3: Yes, and I'm familiar with John.
• 11:27
Speaker 3: He's done work on all my cars.
• 11:29
Speaker 3: That's the first place I take the car is to get the PPF.
• 11:36
Speaker 2: Yeah, before anything happens.
• 11:37
Speaker 3: Yes, get it done.
• 11:38
Speaker 3: Yes, so yeah, that's great.
• 11:42
Speaker 3: Jeff and I are sugar landers, as well, oh, are you really okay?
• 11:45
Speaker 1: okay, jeff lives over by the airport and I live over by the sugar factory.
• 11:50
Speaker 2: Okay, all right, well, I'm in 10 minutes, 15 minutes away from each other I'm sort of at the other south end in Riverstone.
• 11:56
Speaker 3: Oh yeah, okay, yes, it's a great place to live.
• 12:00
Speaker 3: We were fortunate, touchwood, we didn't lose power very recently, yeah, very fortunate.
• 12:05
Speaker 3: Yeah, so it's been a great place to raise a family.
• 12:09
Speaker 3: Actually, yeah, do you have kids?
• 12:11
  Speaker 3: We do.
• 12:12
  Speaker 3: We have four.
• 12:13
Speaker 3: They're all grown and off and independent.
• 12:16
Speaker 3: All but one is married.
• 12:18
Speaker 3: The last one gets married this fall September.
• 12:22
Speaker 2: Oh, very good, Congratulations on that.
• 12:23
  Speaker 2: Well, thank you.
• 12:24
Speaker 3: Well, the exciting thing is right after that.
• 12:26
Speaker 3: One of the others is expecting their first child.
• 12:29
  Speaker 1: Oh again.
• 12:30
Speaker 2: So we'll be grandparents in the fall.
• 12:31
Speaker 3: Lots of things coming up, Lots of things coming up Well save the Porsche and hand it down to the grandchildren.
• 12:36
Speaker 3: Yes, there you go yeah.
• 12:37
Speaker 3: Well, that's what my sons always look at it and say who are you going to leave this one to?
• 12:47
Speaker 2: How many boys you got.
• 12:48
Speaker 3: Three boys and one girl, so what does?
• 12:52
  Speaker 3: That mean Mars?
• 12:53
Speaker 3: Well, I'm just thinking to save some wear and tear, he just needs to buy another Porsche.
• 12:58
Speaker 2: No, I've got it figured out that way he'll have three.
• 13:00
Speaker 2: I've got your answer.
• 13:01
Speaker 2: You just go out and get three more Porsches and everyone has one.
• 13:04
Speaker 2: There we go, there you go.
• 13:05
Speaker 3: Yeah, oh God, yeah, we give the girl the SUV, and then the boys can have the sports cars.
• 13:11
Speaker 3: Yeah yeah, I have one boy that wants the Cobra, so I've got that covered.
• 13:16
  Speaker 3: Yeah.
• 13:17
Speaker 3: Well and you got the other Porsche, the one 911.
• 13:19
Speaker 2: Yeah, you only need to buy one.
• 13:23
Speaker 3: So tell me about the Porsche Club.
• 13:24
Speaker 3: Well, we've got nationally.
• 13:27
Speaker 3: I don't know the exact numbers, but it is a national, A lot National organization.
• 13:31
Speaker 3: Our region, which is the greater Houston area, we have nearly 2 000 members that's a lot brother.
• 13:39
Speaker 3: Yes, it is, it's.
• 13:41
  Speaker 3: It's fantastic.
• 13:42
Speaker 3: When I first bought the porsche, I thought I was a little bit reticent about joining the porsche club.
• 13:49
Speaker 3: I thought oh, it's going to be a lot of stuffy people and snooty people.
• 13:54
Speaker 3: They're nothing like that.
• 13:55
Speaker 3: Everybody in the club that I've met, they've just been the nicest people.
• 14:00
Speaker 3: They love to talk about their cars, their families, what they do.
• 14:04
Speaker 3: Y'all have lots of events we do.
• 14:06
Speaker 3: Every weekend we have at least one event somewhere doing something, yes, but normally on the weekends we'll have we'll have two what we call get togethers, which is what this is, and we'll have two what we call get-togethers, which is what this is, and we'll have that in different parts of town.
• 14:20
Speaker 3: But there's normally two every weekend, except for the first weekend, and there's only one.
• 14:24
Speaker 1: So, in other words, your full-time job, now that you're retired, is the Porsche Club.
• 14:28
Speaker 3: Actually sometimes it feels that way yeah, exactly, so did you attend Keels and Wheels this past.
• 14:33
  Speaker 3: I didn't.
• 14:34
Speaker 3: I was out of town.
• 14:35
Speaker 3: So my wife's sister had a birthday in Austin and we went up there for a surprise party.
• 14:41
Speaker 2: Yeah, it was a good event.
• 14:42
Speaker 2: A lot of nice stuff up there.
• 14:43
Speaker 1: Please tell me that you don't have lots of meetings.
• 14:47
  Speaker 3: We don't.
• 14:47
Speaker 3: We have a monthly meeting and that's it, yeah.
• 14:51
Speaker 1: Do they do the minutes at the meeting?
• 14:54
Speaker 3: Oh yeah, there's minutes.
• 14:55
Speaker 3: No, we're out With 2,000 people, though you've got to kind of keep track of things.
• 15:00
  Speaker 3: You'll get lost.
• 15:02
Speaker 1: You take the minutes and you keep them to yourself.
• 15:04
Speaker 2: That's the way that works.
• 15:06
Speaker 3: When you're done, let us know We'll show up.
• 15:08
Speaker 3: The challenge is really having events.
• 15:11
Speaker 3: That reaches out, touches somebody in the club reaches out, touches somebody in the club.
• 15:15
Speaker 3: With 2,000 people I would estimate maybe 300 to 400 really are active participants and the others just enjoy.
• 15:24
Speaker 1: Do you have one or two big events a year?
• 15:27
Speaker 3: Well, we have quarterly dinners where we'll pick a restaurant and Maggiano's was the last place that we met and we'll have a dinner there and send out well, not really invitations notices really to everybody in the club and they sign up Very popular.
• 15:45
Speaker 3: Usually we cap out in less than a week Of how many 100 to 150.
• 15:52
Speaker 2: Kind of depends on the size of the restaurant.
• 15:53
Speaker 3: Well, it does, it does.
• 15:54
Speaker 3: It kind of depends on the size of the restaurant.
• 15:55
  Speaker 1: Well, it does.
• 15:55
  Speaker 1: It does.
• 15:56
Speaker 1: So the Porsche Club, it sounds to me, is as much about the car as it is about the social events.
• 16:03
Speaker 3: Well, actually, what Porsche says is it's not about the cars, it's about the people.
• 16:11
  Speaker 2: I was close.
• 16:11
  Speaker 2: Yes, same principle.
• 16:12
Speaker 3: Yeah, I got you, but it's absolutely true.
• 16:14
Speaker 3: I mean the people just they love you know, the people that do come out love it when they come out and today's kind of a testimony you know it's funny.
• 16:24
