- 0:00Speaker 1: What's up everyone, and welcome back to the Epstein Chronicles.
- 0:04Speaker 2: So at this point, my.
- 0:05Speaker 1: Guess is everybody's familiar with Prince Andrew's Hindenberg level crash
- 0:11Speaker 1: of an interview that he gave to Emily maitliss Well.
- 0:14Speaker 1: Now the producer behind it all, who chased him down
- 0:18Speaker 1: and set the interview up is dishing some tea over
- 0:23Speaker 1: at the Daily Email. So why don't we just dive
- 0:26Speaker 1: right into this article today and see what Sam McAllister,
- 0:31Speaker 1: the producer and author of this article, has to say.
- 0:35Speaker 1: Headline the full inside story behind Prince Andrew's car crash
- 0:39Speaker 1: TV interview. The woman who set it all up reveals
- 0:42Speaker 1: Beatrice listened to him, discussed teen sex claims and says
- 0:46Speaker 1: each time I thought he couldn't say anything worse, he did.
- 0:50Speaker 1: There's no doubt it was one of the worst displays
- 0:53Speaker 1: I have ever seen of somebody giving a interview or
- 0:58Speaker 1: a public speech or anything like that. Talk about open
- 1:02Speaker 1: mouth and insert foot. How many things that he said
- 1:05Speaker 1: during that interview have come back to haunt him. I
- 1:08Speaker 1: can't sweat. I'm allergic to this. I was in Woking.
- 1:12Speaker 1: I don't know her. I mean, come on, all of
- 1:15Speaker 1: it has come back to boomerang and bust him directly
- 1:19Speaker 1: in his stupid ass head. We were sitting face to
- 1:24Speaker 1: face around the small table in Buckingham Palace, three of
- 1:28Speaker 1: us from BBC Newsnight, plus Prince Andrew, his private secretary,
- 1:32Speaker 1: and Princess Beatrice, who was writing in a notebook. At
- 1:36Speaker 1: stake was the interview every broadcaster across the world would
- 1:40Speaker 1: have given their right arm to do. Just then would
- 1:44Speaker 1: Andrew agree to go on TV and talk about his
- 1:46Speaker 1: friendship with Epstein. What followed was an intense two hours
- 1:50Speaker 1: of questioning from the Prince and his daughter, and with
- 1:54Speaker 1: every minute it became clearer that this wasn't one yet.
- 1:58Speaker 1: So even to get the interview, Sam McAllister, the producer,
- 2:04Speaker 1: had to run the gauntlet basically right. She had to
- 2:07Speaker 1: sit down with Amanda Thrask, who was the Secretary at
- 2:11Speaker 1: the time, and Princess Beatrice as well as Prince Andrew
- 2:15Speaker 1: as they work through what the interview might entail. So
- 2:20Speaker 1: I'm blown away that they were even able to get
- 2:23Speaker 1: this interview, honestly, and if Prince Andrew could go back
- 2:26Speaker 1: in time, I'm pretty sure that he'd go back in
- 2:29Speaker 1: time and strike this one from everybody's memory as a
- 2:34Speaker 1: Newsnight producer, I'd been pursuing this for months and was
- 2:38Speaker 1: desperate to land it. So as we talked, I decided
- 2:41Speaker 1: to give Prince and I decided to give it to
- 2:43Speaker 1: Prince Andrew very bluntly, sir, I have lived in this
- 2:47Speaker 1: country for over forty years, and until now I only
- 2:50Speaker 1: knew two things about you. It's that you are known
- 2:54Speaker 1: as air Miles Andy and Randy Andy, and I can
- 2:57Speaker 1: absolutely tell you that the latter really doesn't help you
- 3:00Speaker 1: in your current predicament. Had I blown our chances of
- 3:04Speaker 1: landing the interview of a lifetime my colleagues, presenter Emily
- 3:07Speaker 1: Maitliss and Newsnight Deputy editor Stuart Maclin looked genuinely shocked.
- 3:13Speaker 1: There was a long pause, then Andrew laughed. The room
- 3:17Speaker 1: collectively exhaled. I mean, is she wrong? What do we
- 3:22Speaker 1: really know about this guy? Besides the fact that he's
- 3:25Speaker 1: a grifter, He was terrible at the functionary role he
- 3:29Speaker 1: was put in to represent the nation and the Queen,
- 3:32Speaker 1: and we also know he is somebody with a proclivity
- 3:36Speaker 1: to be a sick and disgusting bastard. It had started
- 3:44Speaker 1: innocuously an email from a pr to me in November
- 3:47Speaker 1: twenty eighteen, suggesting a chat about pitch at Palace, Prince
- 3:52Speaker 1: Andrew's initiative to support entrepreneurs around the world. Would Newsnight
- 3:57Speaker 1: like to interview him, interview him about it? Of course
- 4:00Speaker 1: they want to do that, right and the Prince now
- 4:03Speaker 1: before the scandal really broke off, right, So the Prince
- 4:06Speaker 1: of course is trying to get as much publicity for
- 4:09Speaker 1: his little project as possible so he can get more
- 4:12Speaker 1: people like mister Turk to come in and give him some,
- 4:15Speaker 1: you know, dirty money. Allegedly, the simple answer was no.
- 4:22Speaker 1: We never agreed to puff pieces and never allow interviewees
- 4:25Speaker 1: to give conditions. So I politely declined, do come back
- 4:29Speaker 1: to me if the position changes. I signed off. It
- 4:32Speaker 1: seems so unlikely that I didn't even tell my boss.
- 4:36Speaker 1: I assumed I'd never hear from their pr again. But
- 4:39Speaker 1: six months later I did. Prince Andrew was now open
- 4:42Speaker 1: to a broader chat. Would I be interested in learning more?
- 4:46Speaker 1: Absolutely so. This is a career maker right here. If
- 4:49Speaker 1: you're a producer, a field producer, and you get a
- 4:52Speaker 1: chance to produce the segment like this, this literally is
- 4:55Speaker 1: a career changer. You can write your own ticket. After this,
- 4:59Speaker 1: everybody from ABC to CNN, the Fox News to BBC
- 5:03Speaker 1: to wherever you want to go is gonna give you
- 5:06Speaker 1: a job because securing this kind of interview, this is
- 5:11Speaker 1: a big deal for a field producer, for sure. The
- 5:16Speaker 1: pr said she needed to talk to Andrew's private secretary,
- 5:19Speaker 1: Amanda Thirsk, and she'd be back in touch. It was
- 5:22Speaker 1: the first time I'd heard Amanda's name, and I immediately
- 5:25Speaker 1: googled her. Now, Amanda Thirsk was basically Prince Andrew's handler
- 5:30Speaker 1: for years until this Newsnight interview. Once this interview happened,
- 5:34Speaker 1: Amanda Thirsk was jettison to the wayside. She sounded suitably impressive,
- 5:41Speaker 1: a woman who had worked for the Prince for seven years,
- 5:44Speaker 1: but who'd previously been a banker in the city. The
- 5:47Speaker 1: picture that emerged after talking to a couple of friends
- 5:50Speaker 1: was someone formidable, clever, thorough and fiercely loyal to Prince Andrew.
- 5:57Speaker 1: Shortly afterwards, I was invited to meet Amanda at Buckingham Palace.
- 6:02Speaker 1: I'm not going to lie. I was excited to go,
- 6:04Speaker 1: but at this stage I wasn't hopeful about landing an interview. Now, look,
- 6:08Speaker 1: I get it. That has to be a pretty exciting
- 6:10Speaker 1: thing to be invited to Buckingham Palace, just like getting
- 6:13Speaker 1: invited to the White House has to be a pretty
- 6:15Speaker 1: exciting thing. But when you're going there for this kind
- 6:20Speaker 1: of interview, yeah, I'm pretty sure that puts a damper
- 6:23Speaker 1: on all of the excitement. As far as I knew,
- 6:27Speaker 1: no member of the Royal family had ever been on Newsnight,
- 6:30Speaker 1: We had no connections in the palace. It was rare
- 6:33Speaker 1: to even do a royal story. Why on earth would
- 6:36Speaker 1: Prince Andrew want to talk to us, My guess is
- 6:40Speaker 1: it has to do with the fact that you never
- 6:42Speaker 1: do royal stories. He wanted it to appear that it
- 6:45Speaker 1: was a neutral outlet doing the story on him, but
- 6:48Speaker 1: it really boomeranged right. The rubber band effect for Prince
- 6:52Speaker 1: Andrew was pretty brutal. Here. All I could see was
- 6:56Speaker 1: a load of armed police at an open gate and
- 6:58Speaker 1: couldn't believe anyone and just walked into Buckingham Palace that way.
- 7:02Speaker 1: But that's exactly what happened. They looked me up on
- 7:05Speaker 1: a list, took my ID and rang through to someone
- 7:07Speaker 1: who sanctioned my entry. The sea of police and guns
- 7:11Speaker 1: parted and I began the long walk to the palace door. Yeah,
- 7:14Speaker 1: how many massage therapists have made the same walk going
- 7:17Speaker 1: to see Uncle Touchy in the middle of the night.
- 7:21Speaker 1: The hundreds of tourists stacked up against the gates stared
- 7:24Speaker 1: as I traped across the cobbles, somewhat impeded by a
- 7:27Speaker 1: perilously high pair of knee high golden hieled Kurt Geiger boots.
- 7:32Speaker 1: I have no idea what those are, but my guess
- 7:34Speaker 1: is they're not that comfortable. I was directed to a
- 7:37Speaker 1: modest waiting room that featured a tiny marble mantlepiece with
- 7:41Speaker 1: a large gilt mirror and a loudly ticking wooden clock.
- 7:45Speaker 1: On a little table sat a frame picture of Her
- 7:47Speaker 1: Majesty in a yellow jacket and a hat. Sounds like
- 7:51Speaker 1: you know when you have a grandma that you go
- 7:52Speaker 1: visit and she has like an antique room that you're
- 7:55Speaker 1: not supposed to go into. Sounds like where this lady
- 7:57Speaker 1: ended up. Feeling daring, I picked up the black frame.
- 8:00Speaker 1: It wasn't heavy. It looked like a cheap wooden frame
- 8:03Speaker 1: from Ikea. As I sat there, I could hear the
- 8:06Speaker 1: staff chattering about some royal visit to Sansbury and watched
- 8:10Speaker 1: as a soldier came in, removed his huge bearskin cap
- 8:14Speaker 1: and talked for a moment about the day. Then two
- 8:16Speaker 1: prs arrived and we were taken upstairs in old fashioned lifts,
- 8:21Speaker 1: past huge busts of former kings and queens and through
- 8:24Speaker 1: swaths of empty corridors. Amanda's office was a small room
- 8:28Speaker 1: peppered with pictures of Prince Andrew and his family. Now,
- 8:32Speaker 1: if anyone could be considered a confidant of Prince Andrew,
- 8:36Speaker 1: it was Amanda Thirsk for all of these years, and
- 8:39Speaker 1: the fact that he let her go the way he
- 8:41Speaker 1: did it tells you everything you need to know about
- 8:44Speaker 1: the disaster that was this interview, and she played a
- 8:48Speaker 1: gigantic part in setting it all up and okaying it.
- 8:51Speaker 1: So somebody had to be the fall person here, and
- 8:54Speaker 1: it ended up being Amanda. She was exactly as I expected,
- 8:59Speaker 1: impeccable manners, thorough and direct, not a hair out of place.
- 9:04Speaker 1: We talked for two hours and agreed that the interview
- 9:06Speaker 1: would encompass everything from Brexit to the future of the monarchy,
- 9:10Speaker 1: as well as any other relevant issues that arose. Then
- 9:14Speaker 1: a man just said there was just one red line.
- 9:17Speaker 1: We couldn't talk about the issue of Andrew's friendship with Epstein.
- 9:21Speaker 1: My heart sank. Oh. I wonder why you can't talk
- 9:24Speaker 1: about that. Why is that a no go zone? Could
- 9:28Speaker 1: it have something to do with the fact that Andrew
- 9:30Speaker 1: knee deep in all of this, had his stupid ass
- 9:33Speaker 1: nose involved in all of it, and not only that,
- 9:36Speaker 1: as we all know, allegedly abused Virginia. So yeah, probably
- 9:41Speaker 1: not a topic that he wants to bring up. Back then,
- 9:45Speaker 1: Jeffrey Epstein wasn't a name that rang bells for a
- 9:48Speaker 1: lot of people, even so I knew we had to
- 9:51Speaker 1: decline the interview. This was in May twenty nineteen. Eight
- 9:56Speaker 1: weeks later, Epstein was arrested. Twelve weeks later, he was dead.
- 10:00Speaker 1: The full scale of his criminal behavior was coming into
- 10:03Speaker 1: sharp focus, and Virginia Roberts and other survivors had started
- 10:07Speaker 1: to speak. They'd been speaking a little bit earlier than that,
- 10:10Speaker 1: but the essence of this is correct. And remember when
- 10:13Speaker 1: the survivors took their story to social media. To you,
- 10:17Speaker 1: that's when things started to really move in this direction,
- 10:20Speaker 1: the direction of at least people being held accountable in
- 10:23Speaker 1: some degree. Twenty weeks on I managed to persuade Amanda
- 10:30Speaker 1: that Prince Andrew's position of silence in the face of
- 10:32Speaker 1: global scrutiny was untenable. Twelve long days later came the
- 10:37Speaker 1: email we had all hoped for. It arrived from Amanda
- 10:41Speaker 1: early on a Saturday morning, November ninth. Could presenter Emily
- 10:45Speaker 1: Maitliss our deputy editor Stuart and I come to the
- 10:48Speaker 1: palace in two days. Prince Andrew wanted to meet us,
- 10:52Speaker 1: so that got to be pretty exciting. Got all of
- 10:55Speaker 1: this going on, the situation with Epstein blooming once again,
- 10:59Speaker 1: and and as a field producer, this is your this
- 11:02Speaker 1: is your day here right, this is your mia culpa. Monday,
- 11:06Speaker 1: November eleventh, twenty nineteen morning. Prince Andrew's voice was upbeat
- 11:12Speaker 1: as he came into Amanda's room. He was smiling, He
- 11:15Speaker 1: seemed friendly. I hope you don't mind, but I brought
- 11:18Speaker 1: someone with me. We exchanged glances.
- 11:20Speaker 2: Who could it be a lawyer?
- 11:22Speaker 1: Maybe someone from the Queen's staff, And then from behind
- 11:25Speaker 1: him came Princess Beatrice. To be frank, the only thing
- 11:29Speaker 1: worse than speaking to a prospective interviewee about allegations of
- 11:33Speaker 1: sexual impropriety and sex with a seventeen year old girl
- 11:37Speaker 1: is having to do so in front of his daughter.
- 11:40Speaker 1: What sort of buffoon brings their daughter to this conversation.
- 11:43Speaker 1: I know you're trying to use her as a set
- 11:45Speaker 1: piece to give you an easier time of it, but bro,
- 11:49Speaker 1: this is horrible. The idea is to protect your children,
- 11:52Speaker 1: to insulate them from your bullshit. That's what a real
- 11:55Speaker 1: man does. But I guess we should have never expected
- 11:57Speaker 1: that from a punk bitch like pray It's Andrew. Princess
- 12:02Speaker 1: Beatrice was polite and engaged, but unlike her father, she
- 12:06Speaker 1: was evidently anxious about the meeting and clearly there to
- 12:09Speaker 1: protect his interests. I'd heard she was close to the queen.
- 12:12Speaker 1: She was close to the queen. The prince's eldest daughter
- 12:15Speaker 1: was now I felt, the person who can make the
- 12:18Speaker 1: difference between us getting the interview or not. Well probably correct, right,
- 12:23Speaker 1: Who has more sway on their dad than a daughter.
- 12:29Speaker 1: We all sat down, cramped into that tiny room, a
- 12:32Speaker 1: few feet from one another. What was most surprising was
- 12:35Speaker 1: there was never any attempt to find out what we'd
- 12:38Speaker 1: ask or to place conditions on the questions. And that
- 12:42Speaker 1: is very surprising. Honestly, Usually these questions have to be
- 12:47Speaker 1: very well tailored for bozos like Andrew or else they
- 12:50Speaker 1: have a train wreck like we saw here, but they
- 12:53Speaker 1: weren't holding the you know, the defensible ground. Andrew and company.
- 13:00Speaker 1: They reached out for this interview because they knew they
- 13:02Speaker 1: had to try and do damage control, But what really
- 13:05Speaker 1: happened was even more damage. For his part, the Prince
- 13:12Speaker 1: revealed for the first time that he supposedly had an alibi.
- 13:15Speaker 1: He told us about Pizza Express a children's party. He
- 13:19Speaker 1: mentioned his sweating, or lack thereof. He talked about how
- 13:22Speaker 1: recently he'd seen Glene Maxwell, Epstein's procurer of underage girls,
- 13:27Speaker 1: co conspirator, general all around scusbag, you know, fellow child
- 13:31Speaker 1: abuser and bipedal serpent. I think that's what they meant.
- 13:34Speaker 1: He'd admitted he'd made errors of judgment. It was raw
- 13:37Speaker 1: jaw dropping stuff. Yeah, errors of judgment.
- 13:40Speaker 2: Huh?
- 13:40Speaker 1: How about errors of everything you've ever done in your life?
- 13:44Speaker 1: And then he said something I'll never forget. As we
- 13:48Speaker 1: conclude it, he turned to Princess Beatrice and said they
- 13:51Speaker 1: had a lot to discuss and should go straight after
- 13:54Speaker 1: upstairs to talk about it over a cup of tea
- 13:57Speaker 1: with mum. For a split second, I almost scoffed, What
- 14:01Speaker 1: on earth did a grown man need to talk to
- 14:03Speaker 1: his mum for? And then it hit me, mum was
- 14:07Speaker 1: the Queen. Well, I get it. I'd want to talk
- 14:09Speaker 1: to my mom probably too, She's one of my best confidants.
- 14:13Speaker 1: But in a situation like this, being you know, the
- 14:16Speaker 1: Prince of England, you should probably wait to say that
- 14:19Speaker 1: until afterwards. You don't need people to know that. Oh,
- 14:21Speaker 1: I'm gonna go run the mom and get some advice.
- 14:27Speaker 1: Less than twenty four hours later, he agreed to the interview.
- 14:30Speaker 1: I felt I wouldn't really believe it until those cameras
- 14:33Speaker 1: started rolling, but I wouldn't have to wait long. This
- 14:36Speaker 1: was on Tuesday, November twelfth, twenty nineteen. In just two days,
- 14:40Speaker 1: we would all find ourselves back inside Buckingham Palace, face
- 14:44Speaker 1: to face with Prince Andrew again, conducting what turned out
- 14:48Speaker 1: to be an interview more shocking than any of us
- 14:51Speaker 1: could have ever predicted. I remember listening to it live
- 14:54Speaker 1: as it was happening, watching the live coverage of it,
- 14:59Speaker 1: and I was blow away for the whole entire thing
- 15:01Speaker 1: pretty much, I mean, like the whole entire ass interview.
- 15:04Speaker 2: I was just shaking my head like who let this
- 15:06Speaker 2: guy do this? Who? Who approved this?
- 15:12Speaker 1: I mean, you would have to think that everybody in
- 15:14Speaker 1: the Palace knows what a bozo Prince Andrew is and
- 15:17Speaker 1: approving an interview like this would end up in disaster.
- 15:21Speaker 1: All right, folks, that's gonna end part one here and
- 15:24Speaker 1: we'll be right back with part number two in our
- 15:27Speaker 1: next update. If you'd like to contact me, you can
- 15:30Speaker 1: do that at Bobby Kapuchi at ProtonMail dot com. That's
- 15:34Speaker 1: bo bb y c ap you Cci at ProtonMail dot com.
- 15:40Speaker 1: You can also find me on Twitter at bo bb
- 15:43Speaker 1: y underscore c ap you Cci.
- 15:46Speaker 2: All right, folks, we'll be right back with part two.
- 15:50Speaker 1: What's up everyone, and welcome back to the Epstein Chronicles
- 15:54Speaker 1: and now the conclusion of the interview with Prince Andrew. Thursday,
- 16:00Speaker 1: November fourteenth, twenty nineteen. Fifteen feet that's how far away
- 16:06Speaker 1: I am from the back of Andrew's chair. I can
- 16:09Speaker 1: see the soles of his shoes hardly scuffed, and the
- 16:11Speaker 1: back of his head new haircut, the hem of his
- 16:14Speaker 1: trousers a perfectly judged length, and the nervous tapping of
- 16:17Speaker 1: his left foot. The chair seems a little small for
- 16:21Speaker 1: his body. Yeah, he's a bit of a puff, isn't
- 16:23Speaker 1: he not in the greatest shape in the world. And
- 16:26Speaker 1: of course he had himself a nice new cut and
- 16:29Speaker 1: a pair of shoes that are hardly scuffed. When you're rich,
- 16:31Speaker 1: you don't wear the same shit too often. Probably a
- 16:34Speaker 1: brand new pair of kicks. My own chair is up
- 16:38Speaker 1: against the wall of an opulent room, larger than most
- 16:41Speaker 1: London flats. I'm sitting next to a very friendly woman who,
- 16:45Speaker 1: seeing how nervous I am, kindly offers me a martini.
- 16:48Speaker 1: Imagine that, sitting at work someone offers you a martini
- 16:51Speaker 1: to calm you down. Pretty nice job, huh jin With
- 16:55Speaker 1: a twist, Her majesty is also a fan. It's one
- 16:58Speaker 1: of those exchanges that you can hardly believe is happening.
- 17:02Speaker 1: Chatting idly with someone in Buckingham Palace about your monarch's
- 17:06Speaker 1: pension for a cocktail. The charming woman is the Prince's equerry.
- 17:11Speaker 1: She's certain his interview will clear clear his name, that
- 17:14Speaker 1: it's all been a terrible misunderstanding, that after this things
- 17:19Speaker 1: will go back to normal. Boy, were they really missing
- 17:22Speaker 1: the boat here?
- 17:23Speaker 2: Huh.
- 17:23Speaker 1: They really thought that Numbnuts was going to get out
- 17:27Speaker 1: there and give the performance of a lifetime, and everybody
- 17:30Speaker 1: was gonna say, Ah, you know what, He's right, Prince
- 17:33Speaker 1: Andrew didn't do any of this. He's an honorable dude,
- 17:37Speaker 1: and all of his behavior lines up and all of
- 17:39Speaker 1: his receipts check out. The reality is none of that's true.
- 17:43Speaker 1: He's not an honorable dude, and none of his receipts
- 17:46Speaker 1: checked out. Emily Maitliss is nervous, busying herself with her notes,
- 17:52Speaker 1: the result of two days of relentless practice and brainstorms
- 17:56Speaker 1: with a small team. Look, it's always nerve racking when
- 17:59Speaker 1: you have a big inner to conduct. I'm not somebody
- 18:02Speaker 1: who does many interviews, but when you have them and
- 18:05Speaker 1: you know you know you have one coming up, there's
- 18:08Speaker 1: a lot of work that goes into being prepared for it.
- 18:10Speaker 1: If you want to give a good interview anyway, you
- 18:13Speaker 1: got to know obviously the topic you're going to talk about,
- 18:16Speaker 1: but you have to know about the person that you're
- 18:18Speaker 1: talking to, dig into their backstory, where are they from,
- 18:22Speaker 1: all of that good stuff. So there's a whole entire
- 18:25Speaker 1: thing that goes along with preparing for interviews and preparing
- 18:29Speaker 1: for one like this, it definitely has to be a
- 18:31Speaker 1: bit nerve shaking. I feel panic rise within me. We're
- 18:37Speaker 1: about to interview a member of the royal family about
- 18:40Speaker 1: his connections with a sex trafficker. We're about to ask
- 18:43Speaker 1: him on camera whether he had sex with Virginia Roberts,
- 18:47Speaker 1: whether he knew about Epstein's terrible acts, and whether he
- 18:50Speaker 1: was complicit. Well, it's nice that somebody did it, considering
- 18:54Speaker 1: the authorities have never done it, Considering nobody in power
- 18:56Speaker 1: has ever done it. It's nice to see that a
- 18:59Speaker 1: news organ is a at least stepped up to the
- 19:01Speaker 1: plate and got him on record. Apart from the Equerry,
- 19:06Speaker 1: Amanda is here with her deputy.
- 19:08Speaker 2: That's it.
- 19:09Speaker 1: No lawyers, no other royal staff. I'd expected a swarm
- 19:13Speaker 1: of people to oversee it all. And I bet if
- 19:15Speaker 1: they could go back in time, that's exactly what they
- 19:18Speaker 1: would have done. Lawyers everywhere, all kinds of legal counsel
- 19:22Speaker 1: to make sure that, you know, things didn't go off
- 19:26Speaker 1: the rails. And fortunately for us and unfortunately for him,
- 19:31Speaker 1: that's not what happened. A tall white man comes into
- 19:36Speaker 1: the room to say hello, he's introduced as Donald McCabe,
- 19:40Speaker 1: Communication Secretary to the Queen. His visit is quite significant.
- 19:44Speaker 1: It means that the Queen likely knows about the interview. Well, yeah,
- 19:48Speaker 1: there's no way that this interview happens without the Queen's
- 19:51Speaker 1: go ahead. Prince Andrew's a dunce and a nonce and
- 19:54Speaker 1: the rest of it. But the Queen's still going to
- 19:57Speaker 1: make the decisions if the interview happens or not. After
- 20:04Speaker 1: speaking to a couple of people, he leaves afterwards. This
- 20:08Speaker 1: seems a missed opportunity. If he'd stayed, he'd have known
- 20:12Speaker 1: the contents of the interview firsthand. Perhaps he would have
- 20:16Speaker 1: realized how terribly this would play out for Andrew, for
- 20:18Speaker 1: the Palace, for the monarchy, and it was terrible. Look,
- 20:23Speaker 1: here's the thing. People haven't just come up with a
- 20:26Speaker 1: reason to hate on Prince Andrew. The dudes a moron.
- 20:30Speaker 1: He doesn't represent the people of England, well, he doesn't
- 20:32Speaker 1: represent his family well, and in fact, he doesn't represent humanity.
- 20:36Speaker 2: Well.
- 20:37Speaker 1: So I don't know why they wouldn't have somebody there
- 20:40Speaker 1: to monitor what this idiot was doing. Perhaps they would
- 20:47Speaker 1: have had more time to prepare a response. Damage limitation
- 20:50Speaker 1: of some kind as it was the first time mackab
- 20:53Speaker 1: would have seen The interview was more than forty eight
- 20:56Speaker 1: hours later, alongside the entire nation. As I wait for
- 21:00Speaker 1: the cameras and lighting to be set up, the Equerry
- 21:03Speaker 1: tells me that the same room will be used after
- 21:06Speaker 1: the interview for Palace for the Palace Cinema Night. When
- 21:09Speaker 1: we leave, members of the Royal household will congregate to
- 21:12Speaker 1: watch a film and maybe eat popcorn. Maybe eat popcorn?
- 21:16Speaker 1: What is popcorn not allowed to the Royal family? Isn't
- 21:19Speaker 1: that like a staple? If it's movie night, you guys
- 21:21Speaker 1: are gonna have the big screen going and popcorn some snacks.
- 21:27Speaker 1: Prince Andrew suddenly appears and makes his way over to
- 21:30Speaker 1: talk to me. He's friendly and chatty. We discuss cinema
- 21:34Speaker 1: night and he opens the doors at the end of
- 21:36Speaker 1: the room to reveal the projector. Turns out this evening
- 21:39Speaker 1: they're showing a renee Zellwigger film Judy Have I seen it?
- 21:44Speaker 1: We chat a little bit about Judy Garland, the weather
- 21:47Speaker 1: floods in Green Park, and then he moves on to
- 21:50Speaker 1: the crew, making suggestions about microphones and other technicalities. Oh so,
- 21:55Speaker 1: all of a sudden. The guy's a world traveled front
- 21:58Speaker 1: of house technician, monitor engineer. Now he knows about microphones.
- 22:03Speaker 1: Dude wouldn't know about a microphone if one blasted him
- 22:05Speaker 1: straight across his face. Twenty minutes later, we're ready to go.
- 22:10Speaker 1: A Mandel settles herself near Andrew, sitting on the floor,
- 22:14Speaker 1: notebook in her hand. Emily nods. The cameras are rolling
- 22:19Speaker 1: and we're off and well, it is the beginning of
- 22:21Speaker 1: the end for Prince Andrew, isn't it? This interview was
- 22:25Speaker 1: the death knull for him. When this interview cracked off
- 22:28Speaker 1: and everybody heard from his mouth how much of a
- 22:31Speaker 1: tool he is, that was the beginning of the end.
- 22:35Speaker 1: The first question Emily asks, why he's decided to talk
- 22:39Speaker 1: now is the one I get asked the most today.
- 22:42Speaker 1: Why take the enormous risk. It's easy to look back
- 22:45Speaker 1: now and say that the decision was reckless. But few
- 22:48Speaker 1: people imagine their own answers doing them harm. Yeah, few
- 22:52Speaker 1: people who didn't do anything. If you're innocent, that's when
- 22:55Speaker 1: you come out and give your big speech. But if
- 22:57Speaker 1: you're not innocent, you should shut your mouth and call
- 23:00Speaker 1: your lawyer. He didn't do that. His Hubris would not
- 23:04Speaker 1: allow it. You also have to remember the life Andrew
- 23:09Speaker 1: has lived. The second son, always said to be the
- 23:12Speaker 1: Queen's favorite, granted extraordinary access and opportunity fond over. The
- 23:18Speaker 1: average CEO would have never taken that risk. They'd have
- 23:21Speaker 1: calculated one hundred reasons not to take the chance. But
- 23:24Speaker 1: Andrew and his people must have thought this hour of
- 23:27Speaker 1: his life would change the public perception of him for
- 23:30Speaker 1: the better. Well, they were severely mistaken. And do you
- 23:33Speaker 1: think it's any surprise that Amanda Thirsk is no longer
- 23:36Speaker 1: part of the crew. We don't know for sure, but
- 23:40Speaker 1: we assume he's spent the past couple of days in
- 23:42Speaker 1: constant rehearsals. Like us, his team must have theorized the questions,
- 23:47Speaker 1: decided precisely had to deal with the more serious allegations, considered,
- 23:52Speaker 1: body language and tone, deliberated exactly if or how he
- 23:57Speaker 1: might apologize. His answer to Emily's questions, he simply reminds
- 24:02Speaker 1: us that his people have been talking to Newsnight for
- 24:05Speaker 1: six months and actually it's a very good opportunity. Look,
- 24:10Speaker 1: his body language was bad, his answers were bad, his
- 24:13Speaker 1: posture was bad, and in fact, everything about him is bad.
- 24:19Speaker 1: After that, Emily gave a masterclass in calm, methodical analytical interviewing.
- 24:25Speaker 1: The interview is now used across the world by pr
- 24:28Speaker 1: and communications professionals and by people in crisis management as
- 24:32Speaker 1: a shining example of what answers not to give when
- 24:36Speaker 1: you're dealing with controversy. Imagine being the case study. The
- 24:40Speaker 1: Prince of England could have done anything in his life,
- 24:42Speaker 1: but instead his legacy is going to be the case
- 24:44Speaker 1: study of what not to do when giving an interview.
- 24:47Speaker 2: Imagine that.
- 24:49Speaker 1: Enjoy your legacy, Prince of Nothing, the Joe exotic of
- 24:52Speaker 1: the Windsor family. I'd assumed Andrew would distance himself from Epstein,
- 24:58Speaker 1: condemn him outright, and diminish their shared history. Instead, it
- 25:02Speaker 1: sounded like they were close friends, and worse, the Prince
- 25:06Speaker 1: even admired him. Imagine and that was certainly the tone
- 25:10Speaker 1: that came off. If you haven't seen this interview yet,
- 25:12Speaker 1: you should definitely go and check it out because it
- 25:15Speaker 1: tells you a lot about Prince Andrew, and it tells
- 25:18Speaker 1: you a lot about the kind of person he is. Instead,
- 25:22Speaker 1: it sounded like they were close friends, and worse that
- 25:25Speaker 1: the Prince even admired him. What followed was one astonishing
- 25:30Speaker 1: answer after another. Each time I thought it couldn't get
- 25:33Speaker 1: any worse, it did. The answer showed how totally removed
- 25:36Speaker 1: the Prince was from the reality of an average life.
- 25:41Speaker 1: All of these people are completely removed from what the
- 25:45Speaker 1: rest of us have to deal with on a regular basis,
- 25:48Speaker 1: just to maintain they have no idea about any of it.
- 25:54Speaker 1: Had he been on Epstein's private plane, yes. Had he
- 25:57Speaker 1: stayed on his private island, yes. Had he stayed at
- 26:01Speaker 1: his home in Palm Beach Yes. Had he visited Glaine
- 26:04Speaker 1: Maxwell's London home, Yes. Was Epstein at Princess Beatrice's eighteenth
- 26:08Speaker 1: birthday party at Windsor Castle, Yes. So all of those
- 26:12Speaker 1: affirmatives shows you right away the groundwork for the relationship,
- 26:16Speaker 1: how tight they were, how close they were, And the
- 26:18Speaker 1: fact that Prince Andrew allegedly was at Epstein's townhouse when
- 26:23Speaker 1: Carolyn was raped again tells you what you need to know.
- 26:27Speaker 1: This dude needs to speak to the FBI, He needs
- 26:29Speaker 1: to speak to the authorities, but Willie probably not. In
- 26:34Speaker 1: two thousand and eight, Epstein was jailed for soliciting and
- 26:37Speaker 1: procuring a minor for prostitution that cannot even occur. A
- 26:41Speaker 1: prostitute cannot be a minor because miners cannot consent. This
- 26:45Speaker 1: is child abuse and the rape of a child. That's
- 26:47Speaker 1: what it is. Andrew said that they had no contact
- 26:51Speaker 1: during that time, but Emily had the killer blow within
- 26:55Speaker 1: months of his release. You went to stay with him
- 26:57Speaker 1: at his New York mansion. Why why were you staying
- 27:00Speaker 1: with a convicted sex offender? Andrew replied, I went there
- 27:04Speaker 1: with the sole purpose of saying to him that because
- 27:06Speaker 1: he had been convicted, it was inappropriate for us to
- 27:09Speaker 1: be seen together. I felt that doing it over the
- 27:12Speaker 1: phone was the chickens way of doing it. So you're
- 27:15Speaker 1: not a chicken when it comes to breaking up with
- 27:17Speaker 1: your bff, Jeffrey Epstein. You'll fly, I mean three thousand
- 27:21Speaker 1: miles five hours over the pond to do it, and
- 27:23Speaker 1: then stay the night at his house, but you won't
- 27:26Speaker 1: even speak to the FBI over the phone. A dramatic
- 27:29Speaker 1: credulous was he saying it was the right thing to
- 27:32Speaker 1: do to spend four days at the home of a
- 27:34Speaker 1: convicted sex offender, that it was somehow honorable. Emily persisted,
- 27:39Speaker 1: do you regret the whole friendship with Epstein? Andrew should
- 27:42Speaker 1: have bitten her hand off for the chance to say
- 27:45Speaker 1: quite simply yes. Instead he said, now still not. And
- 27:49Speaker 1: the reason being is that the people I met and
- 27:52Speaker 1: the opportunities I was given to learn, either by him
- 27:55Speaker 1: or because of him, were actually very useful. Imagine saying this,
- 28:00Speaker 1: and all of these girls, two hundred and twenty five
- 28:02Speaker 1: of them got money from the estate, by the way,
- 28:05Speaker 1: and we know there's a lot more than that, But
- 28:07Speaker 1: can you imagine saying that, knowing that all of these
- 28:09Speaker 1: girls were abused and raped by this guy. I remember
- 28:14Speaker 1: having to look down just so I could roll my eyes.
- 28:18Speaker 1: He had no recollection of meeting Virginia Roberts or of
- 28:21Speaker 1: having his hand around her waist in the infamous photograph
- 28:24Speaker 1: taken on the night she claimed he had sex with
- 28:27Speaker 1: her as a royal. He said he wouldn't have been
- 28:30Speaker 1: physically close to someone like that as a royal. Shut up, dude.
- 28:34Speaker 1: In fact, nobody wants to be that close to you.
- 28:38Speaker 1: Out cam is now notorious. Alibis that he was at
- 28:41Speaker 1: the Pizza Express and Woking that day that Virginia's recollection
- 28:45Speaker 1: of him sweating on the dance floor at Tramp nightclub
- 28:48Speaker 1: couldn't be true because he'd lost the ability to sweat. Funny, how,
- 28:52Speaker 1: there's a bunch of pictures of him sweating his ass
- 28:55Speaker 1: through all of those shirts. Though, huh, has this guy
- 28:57Speaker 1: done anything but lie throughout this whole entire time? As
- 29:02Speaker 1: a former criminal barista, I knew the answers were a
- 29:06Speaker 1: future defense lawyer's nightmare. I realized for the first time
- 29:09Speaker 1: that Andrew couldn't have taken legal advice before speaking to us.
- 29:13Speaker 1: It just got worse and worse. He couldn't have had
- 29:16Speaker 1: sex with Virginia, he said, because sex for a man
- 29:19Speaker 1: is a sort of positive action which is very difficult
- 29:22Speaker 1: to forget. Was this a royal euphemism for penetration? I mean,
- 29:26Speaker 1: imagine having such an overblown opinion of yourself that you
- 29:30Speaker 1: think that because you're a royal, everybody's gonna remember you. Bro,
- 29:34Speaker 1: you're a buffoon, okay. In fact, my guess is a
- 29:37Speaker 1: lot of the people that you've rolled on top of
- 29:40Speaker 1: for the five minutes in your life, they all want
- 29:42Speaker 1: to forget you. Emily gave him another chance. I wonder
- 29:50Speaker 1: if you have any sense of guilt, regret, or shame
- 29:53Speaker 1: about any of your behavior and your friendship with Epstein.
- 29:56Speaker 1: She handed it to him.
- 29:57Speaker 2: On a plate.
- 29:58Speaker 1: Surely he'd clarify that it it had all been a
- 30:00Speaker 1: terrible mistake. I looked up from the floor watched him
- 30:04Speaker 1: gather himself for one of the final answers. As far
- 30:08Speaker 1: as mister Epstein is concerned, it was the wrong decision
- 30:11Speaker 1: to go and see him in twenty ten, As far
- 30:14Speaker 1: as my association with him was concerned, it had some
- 30:18Speaker 1: seriously beneficial outcomes in areas that have nothing to do
- 30:21Speaker 1: with what we're talking about today. Extraordinary that he couldn't
- 30:25Speaker 1: see just how terrible that sounded. Emily asked her final question.
- 30:30Speaker 1: I mean, this guy is still enamored with Epstein. It
- 30:32Speaker 1: seems like here Epstein sure had you wrapped around his finger.
- 30:36Speaker 1: What sort of compromot did Epstein have on you, Joe
- 30:40Speaker 1: Exotic of the Windsor Family. Is there anything you feel
- 30:45Speaker 1: has been left unsaid that you would like to say
- 30:48Speaker 1: now a message of regret for the terrible acts of
- 30:51Speaker 1: his friend had committed. Perhaps Andrew's chance ebbed the way. No,
- 30:56Speaker 1: I didn't. I don't think so. I think you've probably
- 30:58Speaker 1: dragged out most of what is required. That was it
- 31:01Speaker 1: an interview? More shocking than any of us could ever
- 31:04Speaker 1: have predicted. I couldn't look at anyone. I could barely
- 31:08Speaker 1: believe his people hadn't stopped the interview. I would have
- 31:11Speaker 1: despite the consequences. How'd you think it went?
- 31:14Speaker 2: I asked the equerry. She beamed. Wasn't he wonderful?
- 31:18Speaker 1: She said, oh, yeah, wonderful if you're blind and deaf
- 31:21Speaker 1: and then unable to comprehend things. I'd expected Amanda thirst
- 31:27Speaker 1: to be distraught, the Prince to look shaken or concerned,
- 31:30Speaker 1: but she was smiling, and he seemed debulent. And then
- 31:33Speaker 1: it hit me he actually thought it had gone well.
- 31:37Speaker 1: He was in such a good mood that he offered
- 31:39Speaker 1: us all a tour of the palace. I couldn't go.
- 31:41Speaker 1: I wouldn't have been able to speak to him in
- 31:43Speaker 1: good faith. Of course, Emily couldn't decline. I don't know
- 31:46Speaker 1: how she kept her composure. I would have went, I
- 31:49Speaker 1: just I would have declined and been like, sorry, I'm
- 31:51Speaker 1: never I don't even want to talk to you ever again.
- 31:57Speaker 1: After the interview was broadcast, everyone agreed it had been
- 32:00Speaker 1: an unmitigated disaster for Prince Andrew. The newspapers also lamb
- 32:05Speaker 1: based did Amanda Thirsk ridiculing her for letting him do
- 32:09Speaker 1: the interview. I found this profoundly disturbing. What she had
- 32:13Speaker 1: done was believe in her boss. His own answers had
- 32:16Speaker 1: landed him in hot water. She's not wrong about that,
- 32:19Speaker 1: you know, Amanda Thirsk. At the end of the day,
- 32:21Speaker 1: is just you know, an employee. Prince Andrew's the boss,
- 32:24Speaker 1: and he's the one that shited the bed. I also
- 32:28Speaker 1: felt strangely protective towards her. We were both doing our
- 32:31Speaker 1: jobs to the best of our abilities, and now her
- 32:34Speaker 1: professional life lay in tatters. On November twentieth, Prince Andrew
- 32:39Speaker 1: announced that he was stepping back from public duties for
- 32:41Speaker 1: the foreseeable future. Belatedly, he also expressed sympathy for Epstein's survivors.
- 32:47Speaker 1: Belated ly, Huh, his mom probably told him he had
- 32:50Speaker 1: to do that. Amanda Thirst stepped back from her role
- 32:53Speaker 1: and eventually left. I messaged her offered to meet if
- 32:57Speaker 1: she was still so inclined. Meanwhile, Glene Maxwell was charged
- 33:00Speaker 1: with eight counts relating to grooming underage girls for Epstein.
- 33:04Speaker 1: Calls for Andrew to cooperate with the FBI grew louder
- 33:08Speaker 1: and then Just before the twenty fifth anniversary of Martin
- 33:11Speaker 1: Basher's Panorama interview with Princess Diana, Earl Spencer went public
- 33:16Speaker 1: with allegations against him and the BBC. The interview, he said,
- 33:20Speaker 1: had been procured by Martin Basheer after he had told
- 33:23Speaker 1: a litany of lives to Diana and showed her forged
- 33:26Speaker 1: bank statements. She'd never had agreed to do it otherwise.
- 33:30Speaker 1: The more I learned about the allegations, the more appalled.
- 33:33Speaker 1: I was a graphic designer who'd blown the whistle on
- 33:36Speaker 1: the bank statements, had lost his job. It seemed clear
- 33:39Speaker 1: that there had been some kind of cover up. All
- 33:42Speaker 1: I could feel was betrayal and anger. For that, among
- 33:45Speaker 1: many reasons, I decided I wanted to leave the BBC.
- 33:48Speaker 1: Before I left, I finally got to see Amanda Thirsk.
- 33:51Speaker 1: She was nothing but gracious and wished me the best.
- 33:54Speaker 1: We are still in touch from time to time. Well
- 33:58Speaker 1: there you have it, folks. That's gonna conclud fo Part
- 34:00Speaker 1: two of how the interview with Prince Andrew with Emily
- 34:04Speaker 1: Maitliss was procured. A pretty interesting look behind the scenes
- 34:09Speaker 1: at the life of a field producer and how crazy
- 34:13Speaker 1: that can be. They're the ones that get these interviews,
- 34:16Speaker 1: they're the ones that set all of this up. So
- 34:18Speaker 1: they have a very interesting life, there's no doubt about it.
- 34:21Speaker 1: And imagine sitting in on this one. So I thought
- 34:24Speaker 1: this would be a good ad to the catalog and
- 34:26Speaker 1: offer a bit more context and some clarity about how
- 34:30Speaker 1: the interview went down. All right, everybody, if you'd like
- 34:34Speaker 1: to contact me, you can do that at Bobby Capuchi
- 34:36Speaker 1: at ProtonMail dot com. That's bo b b Y c
- 34:40Speaker 1: ap you Cci at ProtonMail dot com. You can also
- 34:45Speaker 1: find me on Twitter at Bobby Underscore c ap Ucci.
- 34:51Speaker 1: The link that I discussed can be found in the
- 34:53Speaker 1: description box. What's up everyone, and welcome back to the
- 34:57Speaker 1: Epstein Chronicles. So Andrew's dumbass is back in the news
- 35:02Speaker 1: and we're hearing from one of his pals, a lawyer
- 35:06Speaker 1: who is a defamation lawyer named Paul Tweed, who said
- 35:09Speaker 1: he advised Prince Andrew about speaking to BBC and giving
- 35:13Speaker 1: that Newsnight interview. He told Prince Andrew that it was
- 35:17Speaker 1: an absolutely terrible idea, but like usual, Prince Andrew, well
- 35:21Speaker 1: he knows better. The Queen also told him not a
- 35:24Speaker 1: great idea, buddy. But of course Andrew thought he was
- 35:27Speaker 1: going to get up there and gaslight everybody and tell
- 35:30Speaker 1: the whole world that he was an innocent man. And
- 35:33Speaker 1: instead it was the opposite reaction, wasn't it. Everybody took
- 35:37Speaker 1: a look at that interview and said to themselves, what
- 35:40Speaker 1: an absolute ski Vaughts this dude is. He didn't offer
- 35:44Speaker 1: any bit of evidence, He didn't offer anything that would
- 35:47Speaker 1: change my mind anyway about what we have learned about
- 35:50Speaker 1: this dude. And besides a bunch of nonsense coming from
- 35:53Speaker 1: surrogates and people around him, there's nobody that's serious that's
- 35:57Speaker 1: talking about Prince Andrew making a comeback or anything like that.
- 36:02Speaker 1: That's all just fantasyland stuff that his camp floats out there.
- 36:06Speaker 1: You know, the four or five people that are still
- 36:08Speaker 1: around them, they float that out there and they see
- 36:10Speaker 1: what happens. What's the reaction gonna be. But the reality
- 36:13Speaker 1: for Prince Andrew is the party is over. He's never
- 36:16Speaker 1: coming back. He's never gonna be welcomed back in a
- 36:20Speaker 1: polite society, and most certainly not as a representative of
- 36:24Speaker 1: the English people. Today, we have an article from the
- 36:28Speaker 1: Dailymail dot Com headline I warned Prince Andrew it was
- 36:32Speaker 1: a bad idea to agree to the infamous Newsnight interview.
- 36:35Speaker 1: Duke of York's lawyer Pal says this article was authored
- 36:39Speaker 1: by Vanessa Allen and Claudia Joseph. You have to be
- 36:43Speaker 1: one dumbass moron to think doing that interview is a
- 36:46Speaker 1: good idea. There was never a point in time when
- 36:50Speaker 1: that interview should have even been a thing for Prince Andrew.
- 36:53Speaker 1: The answer should have been no, thank you, I'll pass.
- 36:56Speaker 1: And if you're innocent, or if Jeffrey Epstein was blackmailing
- 37:00Speaker 1: you or something, you should have went to the authorities
- 37:02Speaker 1: and sat down with the FBI and spilled the beans.
- 37:05Speaker 1: You didn't do anything like that. What you did was
- 37:08Speaker 1: you retreated behind your mum's skirts. Prince Andrew was warned
- 37:13Speaker 1: it was a bad idea for him to discuss his
- 37:15Speaker 1: links with this grace financier pedophile Jeffrey Epstein on News Night.
- 37:20Speaker 1: A friend revealed yesterday, lawyer Paul Tweed said he advised
- 37:24Speaker 1: the Duke of York again speaking to the BBC about
- 37:28Speaker 1: his links with the convicted pedophile, and then told the
- 37:31Speaker 1: senior aide is he mad, No way, no, no, no,
- 37:36Speaker 1: he said, Andrew ignored his vice and made his mind
- 37:39Speaker 1: up to tell his version of events to the broadcaster.
- 37:43Speaker 1: And when you have a friend of yours who's a
- 37:44Speaker 1: lawyer telling you this, a good lawyer, and you know,
- 37:47Speaker 1: not somebody you're paying, but a good lawyer who's just
- 37:49Speaker 1: a friend, and they're advising you not to have this
- 37:52Speaker 1: conversation on national TV, it's probably a good idea to
- 37:57Speaker 1: listen to what they're saying. And if not, well, you
- 37:59Speaker 1: only yourself to blame. And Prince Andrew once again has
- 38:03Speaker 1: made a cage of his very own design that he's
- 38:07Speaker 1: living in. This man has created all of his own problems.
- 38:10Speaker 1: Nobody created these problems for him. Nobody told them to
- 38:14Speaker 1: palor around with Epstein. Nobody told them to be a
- 38:17Speaker 1: general all around dickhead. He chose to do all of that,
- 38:21Speaker 1: just like he chose to ignore the good advice of
- 38:23Speaker 1: his friend here, Paul Tweed, and do the interview. The
- 38:27Speaker 1: disastrous twenty nineteen interview and its fallout effectively ended Andrew's
- 38:31Speaker 1: role in public life. The Duke admitted he had visited
- 38:35Speaker 1: Epstein shortly after the billionaire financier Pedophiles released from jail
- 38:40Speaker 1: for soliciting underage sex and said that was the wrong decision. Yeah,
- 38:44Speaker 1: you think the wrong decision. The Prince of England, a
- 38:48Speaker 1: prince of the blood, going to hang out with a
- 38:50Speaker 1: convicted pedophile, sleeping on his couch, breaking bread with him,
- 38:55Speaker 1: and doing lord knows what else. I think it's safe
- 38:57Speaker 1: to say that that ranks right up or the top
- 39:00Speaker 1: of bad decisions of all time. He said he did
- 39:04Speaker 1: not regret his association with Epstein, as it had some
- 39:08Speaker 1: seriously beneficial outcomes, and gave no apology to Epstein's victims.
- 39:13Speaker 2: No, he didn't.
- 39:14Speaker 1: He sat there and acted like he was being victimized
- 39:17Speaker 1: or something like he was being wrongfully targeted. Bro, everything
- 39:22Speaker 1: you did with your boy Epstein, everything you did with
- 39:26Speaker 1: all of the other undesirable scumbags you were hanging out with,
- 39:30Speaker 1: you have to know at some point was gonna come
- 39:32Speaker 1: home and those chickens were gonna roost. But when you're
- 39:36Speaker 1: somebody like Prince Andrew and you have these kinds of
- 39:39Speaker 1: narcissistic traits, you don't see that for what it is.
- 39:42Speaker 1: You don't see that there's a problem with what you're doing,
- 39:45Speaker 1: because guess what, you could never be wrong, right, You're
- 39:49Speaker 1: always in the right on Prince Andrew. I've never been reprimanded,
- 39:53Speaker 1: I've never been punished, I've never been told no, So
- 39:56Speaker 1: why should I be told no now? And that's the
- 39:59Speaker 1: way Prince Andrew has always lived his life. And thankfully
- 40:03Speaker 1: he had a nice dose of reality during this interview
- 40:07Speaker 1: when basically a bucket of cold ass water was dumped
- 40:11Speaker 1: on his head and he was told it was time
- 40:13Speaker 1: to wake up. But unfortunately he seems to still be
- 40:16Speaker 1: sleepwalking through life. The interview is now at the center
- 40:20Speaker 1: of a two part Channel four documentary, Andrew the Problem Prints.
- 40:25Speaker 1: The program includes insights from the Newsnight team which filmed
- 40:29Speaker 1: the interview, journalist Emily Maitliss, and producer Sam McAllister lawyers
- 40:34Speaker 1: for one of the Epstein survivors and Andrew's friends. Mister Tweed,
- 40:39Speaker 1: a defamation lawyer and long standing friend of the duke,
- 40:42Speaker 1: said he was told about the plans for an interview
- 40:45Speaker 1: a month before it was filmed. Speaking to Andrew as
- 40:49Speaker 1: a friend, he said, look, that would not be a
- 40:52Speaker 1: good idea, sir. He then got a call from Andrew's
- 40:55Speaker 1: then chief of staff, Amanda Thirsk, saying the Duke had
- 40:58Speaker 1: decided to do the inn. And we know that Amanda
- 41:01Speaker 1: Thirst lost her job as well. She's no longer working
- 41:05Speaker 1: with the Prince. Who the hell knows what she's up to,
- 41:07Speaker 1: but she got canned in the end as well. Anybody
- 41:10Speaker 1: who was okay with Andrew doing this interview should be
- 41:14Speaker 1: fired and look, like the rest of you, I'm over
- 41:18Speaker 1: the moon that he did it. Anytime one of these
- 41:20Speaker 1: clowns wants to get on TV, open their big fat
- 41:23Speaker 1: yapps and expose themselves, I'm all for it. But as
- 41:26Speaker 1: far as he's concerned, and as far as his camp
- 41:29Speaker 1: is concerned, oh, I'm sure there were many nights of
- 41:32Speaker 1: people staying up with Adjeda freaking out that this idiot
- 41:36Speaker 1: was going to do this interview. And when you have
- 41:38Speaker 1: a good friend of yours like Paul Tweed telling you, bro,
- 41:42Speaker 1: you're making a big mistake, you should probably listen, mister
- 41:47Speaker 1: Tweed told the Channel four documentary. I said, is he mad?
- 41:50Speaker 1: No way, no, no, no, that's a bad idea. You
- 41:54Speaker 1: should not do it. Amanda just said, look, Paul, I've
- 41:58Speaker 1: got to go. I'll call you later. The phone was
- 42:00Speaker 1: put down abruptly and that was it. So instead of
- 42:03Speaker 1: taking the advice of his lawyer friend, mister Tweed. Here,
- 42:07Speaker 1: he's taking the advice of all of the yes men
- 42:10Speaker 1: that are around him. And that's the biggest problem when
- 42:13Speaker 1: you're surrounded by yes men and nobody has the courage
- 42:16Speaker 1: to ever say to you. Look, you're acting out of line,
- 42:18Speaker 1: you're talking out of the side of your neck, you're
- 42:20Speaker 1: being stupid. Well you're just gonna go on and continue
- 42:23Speaker 1: to be stupid. And you know what they say, right,
- 42:26Speaker 1: play stupid games and you win stupid prizes. And Prince
- 42:31Speaker 1: Andrew is the king of winning stupid prizes. So obviously
- 42:35Speaker 1: the Duke, for better or for worse, had made up
- 42:37Speaker 1: his mind he was going to do it. The Duke
- 42:40Speaker 1: made that decision on his own, against most advice. Mister
- 42:44Speaker 1: Tweed said Andrew was a very decent, straightforward individual, but
- 42:48Speaker 1: believes he had been very naive in his dealings with Epstein. Oh,
- 42:52Speaker 1: give me a break. It's always naive. This naive, that
- 42:55Speaker 1: Vafon Goul naive. He knew what he was doing, and
- 42:58Speaker 1: he chose to chill with Epstein even when Epstein was outed.
- 43:01Speaker 1: So I don't want to hear shit about Oh he's naive.
- 43:03Speaker 1: He didn't know who Epstein was he didn't know what
- 43:06Speaker 1: Epstein was up to. Everybody knew. He said the relationship
- 43:11Speaker 1: was totally ill judged, totally inappropriate, and he believed Epstein
- 43:15Speaker 1: had set up a notorious photo of himself with the
- 43:18Speaker 1: Duke in New York Central Park in twenty ten. We
- 43:22Speaker 1: know that's not true either. We've heard from the photographers
- 43:25Speaker 1: who took the photo, who said they just happened to
- 43:28Speaker 1: see this situation unfolding and were in the right place
- 43:31Speaker 1: at the right time Andrew's camp, though they floated the
- 43:34Speaker 1: idea that this was all a setup. Epstein had served
- 43:38Speaker 1: an eighteen month sentence for soliciting sex from an underage
- 43:41Speaker 1: girl in Florida and had been released from prison just
- 43:44Speaker 1: months before Andrew visited him in New York. He was
- 43:48Speaker 1: later found dead in his prison cell in twenty nineteen
- 43:51Speaker 1: while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges. So your boy
- 43:55Speaker 1: gets out of jail right for sex offense crimes, and
- 43:58Speaker 1: then you the Prince of England and decide you're gonna
- 44:01Speaker 1: fly across the pond and go stay at his house,
- 44:04Speaker 1: and then you're gonna tell us you did all of
- 44:05Speaker 1: that because you wanted to tell him. You didn't want
- 44:08Speaker 1: to be friends anymore. That's your story, that's the narrative
- 44:11Speaker 1: you're sticking to. No wonder your friends didn't want you
- 44:15Speaker 1: to do that interview. Mister Tweed, who has represented Andrew's
- 44:19Speaker 1: ex wife Sarah Ferguson in civil litigation, said the effect
- 44:23Speaker 1: of the Newsnight interview on the Duke and his family
- 44:26Speaker 1: has been horrendous, but believed he could return to public life,
- 44:29Speaker 1: saying I would never say never. In any case, Well
- 44:33Speaker 1: must be smoking mushrooms, because there's no way Prince Andrew
- 44:37Speaker 1: is ever coming back to public life, unless, of course,
- 44:40Speaker 1: he provides some evidence that shows that his accuser is
- 44:44Speaker 1: not telling the truth. You have that evidence, let's see it.
- 44:47Speaker 1: But until you can provide something as far as evidence
- 44:50Speaker 1: is concerned, shut up and go back to the stable
- 44:53Speaker 1: and muck the shit. In the Newsnight interview, Andrew denied
- 44:58Speaker 1: claims from one of the VP's survivors, Virginia Roberts, that
- 45:02Speaker 1: she was trafficked to have sex with them in two
- 45:04Speaker 1: thousand and one when she was seventeen. He told Miss
- 45:08Speaker 1: Maitliss he did not remember meeting miss Roberts, and he
- 45:12Speaker 1: was at a birthday party at a pizza Express and
- 45:14Speaker 1: Woking on the day she said that they met him
- 45:18Speaker 1: going to a pizza Express and Woking is like Bill
- 45:21Speaker 1: Clinton going to your local pizza hut. It's not going
- 45:24Speaker 1: to happen. He also denied her recollection of him sweating
- 45:28Speaker 1: heavily as they danced at a nightclub in central London,
- 45:31Speaker 1: and insisted he had been unable to sweat after an
- 45:34Speaker 1: adrenaline overdose during the Falklands War. Meanwhile, there's tons of
- 45:39Speaker 1: pictures of dumb dumb over here sweating through his shirt.
- 45:43Speaker 1: Andrew Peter reported nine point six million pounds settlement to
- 45:47Speaker 1: Miss Roberts after she launched the civil lawsuit in New
- 45:50Speaker 1: York accusing him of sexual abuse, although he continues to
- 45:54Speaker 1: deny any wrongdoing. Miss Roberts lawyer Sigared macauley said the
- 45:59Speaker 1: Newsnight Inner, you gave her a roadmap to tear them
- 46:02Speaker 1: apart in the civil claim one hundred percent.
- 46:05Speaker 2: Again.
- 46:06Speaker 1: I've said it from the beginning and I'll continue to
- 46:08Speaker 1: say it, folks. Prince Andrew is his own worst enemy,
- 46:14Speaker 1: all right, folks. That's gonna do it for this one.
- 46:16Speaker 1: All of the information that goes with the episode can
