- 0:06Amber Courtney: Hey guys.
- 0:06Welcome back to the Luxe and Legacy Podcast.
- 0:09I'm Amber with light living photography and I'm here with my friend.
- 0:14Marie Crenwelge Tilkens: Marie of Marie Elizabeth Photography today, we're diving
- 0:18into something that every creative faces at some point, and that is comparison and
- 0:24Imposter syndrome and fear-based pricing.
- 0:28This one hits pretty deep.
- 0:30It is so easy to scroll through Instagram, see another photographer's
- 0:34beautiful work or sold out calendar and immediately think.
- 0:39Why not me?
- 0:41Maybe I should just pack up and quit.
- 0:43But today we're gonna talk about how to shift out of that
- 0:48comparison energy and back into confident alignment and abundance.
- 0:55And I wanna emphasize that this is a practice you never really feel like.
- 0:59You've arrived unless you decide to.
- 1:02So I definitely have some strategies I use that are helpful
- 1:06to me that I'll be sharing.
- 1:08And we ask in our stories how you, the listeners typically combat comparison.
- 1:12So we'll be sharing some of those responses as well.
- 1:16So, first, Amber, I wanna ask you, do you struggle with comparison?
- 1:20And if so, what do you do to help with it?
- 1:24Amber Courtney: Definitely, I'll be honest, comparison was something I really
- 1:28struggled with early on in my business, especially when I'd see photographers who
- 1:33were incredibly talented but charging.
- 1:37Not very much, and it used to make me feel guilty, like, who am
- 1:41I to charge more than them when she's just as good, if not better.
- 1:46What I've learned to do is just stop looking at those accounts.
- 1:51People who.
- 1:53Are really, I know they are undercharging and they're really good.
- 1:57That should not impact me and I shouldn't let that hold myself back.
- 2:02I shouldn't let other people's limitations also limit me.
- 2:06So what I tend to do for those accounts is I don't block them or unfollow
- 2:10them, but I might mute them for a while just so I can get my head back into
- 2:15what's best for me for my business.
- 2:18How much do I need to charge to make a profit?
- 2:21What's really serving my own clients and my own brand rather
- 2:25than letting someone else and.
- 2:27Their undercharging hold me back from what's my highest, best self, and
- 2:34it's simply protecting my own mindset.
- 2:36I don't need a constant reminder popping up in my feed that might trigger more
- 2:41guilt or doubt, and it doesn't mean I don't admire their work by muting them.
- 2:46It just means I choose to stay grounded and stay in my own lane.
- 2:51Marie Crenwelge Tilkens: Yeah, that's a good point.
- 2:52Muting doesn't necessarily need to be about disconnection or not supporting.
- 2:58It's about just like focusing on your business, maintaining
- 3:02alignment, and as you said.
- 3:04Staying in your own lane.
- 3:05Amber Courtney: Exactly, and now when I see someone whose work that's absolutely
- 3:09beautiful, I try to view them as more of an expander instead of competition.
- 3:15So I don't so much worry about fighting for clients based on price anymore.
- 3:21Instead, I look at other people's talent who I really admire and think of them as.
- 3:27What I call an expander or if you've done any mindset work or, worked
- 3:32on those type of things, you may have heard that term before.
- 3:34I didn't make up that term.
- 3:36It's when you have someone in your life that really has a lot more than you,
- 3:41they've gotten farther than you, but you don't view it in a jealous kind of way.
- 3:45You view it in a way of like, oh, well they can do it.
- 3:48I can do it too.
- 3:49And it helps you expand and grow rather than focusing on the people who are
- 3:56holding you back or they have less than or
- 4:00they're not charging very much.
- 4:01So you think, oh, I can't charge more than them.
- 4:04Instead, think about the people who they've grown, you know, they've
- 4:08done it, they make a lot per session, they make a really great profit.
- 4:12They've worked on their skills and they're super talented, and you
- 4:15let that have an expansion mindset.
- 4:18It's kind of like the glass half full or the, glass half empty mindset.
- 4:23So now instead of thinking of someone.
- 4:25In my area as competition.
- 4:27I'll think, oh, her work is stunning.
- 4:30I love it.
- 4:31I'm so inspired by it, but it's also different than mine, and that's okay.
- 4:36So her people will be drawn to her and my people will be drawn to me
- 4:41therefore, I don't have that jealousy feeling.
- 4:44It makes everything feel so much lighter and more supportive.
- 4:48There's room for all of us when we're being authentic and creating
- 4:52from who we are, not just trying to replicate someone else.
- 4:57Marie Crenwelge Tilkens: I think that's so fascinating.
- 4:59I've never heard the term expander, but I think I actually do that a little
- 5:05bit too, which I'll get to in a minute.
- 5:08definitely go through phases where I struggle with comparison.
- 5:12Not so much from the business side of things anymore, but from the art side,
- 5:17because there's always gonna be people better than you out there, you know?
- 5:21Mm-hmm.
- 5:21, And I think.
- 5:22It's something that with social media, it's like constantly on the radar if
- 5:27we're not being intentional about, you know, our thoughts and actions,
- 5:31especially when going on Instagram.
- 5:34Usually, I feel that, , comparison trap when I'm not feeling
- 5:40as inspired by my work.
- 5:42So the first thing I typically do when feeling this way.
- 5:45Is plan a styled session.
- 5:47This gives me something to look forward to, and it's an action step,
- 5:51so I always feel better taking things into my own hands and taking action.
- 5:56Another thing I do is simply spend less time on Instagram.
- 6:01I think it's really important to ask ourselves, okay, if I go on this app,
- 6:06what do I want to feel while on it?
- 6:09And after I'm on it, sometimes I can honestly answer, you know what?
- 6:14Now is not a good time for me to go on because I'm not feeling too great.
- 6:18So I don't think Instagram is going to make it better.
- 6:22I can kind of tell I'm in this fight or flight mode and I'm struggling to
- 6:26see the big picture of where I am, my business, my work, and the less
- 6:31time I spend on Instagram, the better I am able to see the big picture and
- 6:35appreciate others' work alongside my own.
- 6:39Or another thing I'll do is I'll go on Instagram, I post and that's
- 6:45Amber Courtney: Great.
- 6:46Marie Crenwelge Tilkens: The biggest thing is just like not scrolling
- 6:49or swiping through stories, because that's how it starts for me.
- 6:53I actually rarely view other people's stories.
- 6:55Now I only view stories of some other kinds of creators or you know, people
- 7:01living in the French countryside.
- 7:03So I can just daydream.
- 7:05Amber Courtney: I absolutely love that.
- 7:07Sometimes I will go off Instagram and instead go onto Pinterest, because that's
- 7:14what you were talking about where you find inspiration and it's not necessarily
- 7:19attached to a certain person that's in your area that you feel, you know,
- 7:23a certain type of way about instead.
- 7:26Be inspired by things.
- 7:28So maybe going onto Pinterest and scrolling, like you said, French
- 7:32countryside photos or whatever type of artwork and jewelry you love.
- 7:38Other things that kind of create.
- 7:40That inspired feeling is going to bring you back to your center and help you
- 7:45come back to your brand and who you are.
- 7:48And then I also love that you talked about styled shoots I've talked about before.
- 7:52That's one of my favorite things to do in my business, to stay aligned in my brand
- 7:57and my creativity and my inspiration.
- 7:59So that's definitely something I love as well.
- 8:02Okay, next, let's.
- 8:02Talk about shifting from scarcity to abundance.
- 8:06Once your confidence builds, then the next shift.
- 8:10Is really moving into more of an abundance mindset to help you curtail
- 8:16some of those feelings of competition when you're looking at other people in
- 8:21your area or other people on Instagram.
- 8:24When we.
- 8:25Believe in our head that there aren't enough clients that the market's
- 8:30either too crowded or too scarce.
- 8:33We shrink ourselves, we lower our prices, we overdeliver, we lose our joy, and
- 8:41jealousy is really a low vibration Energy and abundance is a high vibration energy.
- 8:50So if instead.
- 8:52Of thinking about, oh, the market's too, this or that.
- 8:55Instead we think about, well, why not me be able to charge what these expanders
- 9:01charge or why can't it be me who grows my business to something incredible?
- 9:07That is thinking in an abundance and also realizing that everyone has their
- 9:12own clients that would be attracted to them, and that it's really not about.
- 9:17There not being enough clients.
- 9:18There's always enough clients out there, believe me, you guys, no matter
- 9:22where you live, and the more you raise your vibration to think of things in
- 9:27a really abundant way, the more things will start to be attracted to you.
- 9:33The more you can attract these amazing clients to you and more
- 9:37good things come to you in life.
- 9:40Marie Crenwelge Tilkens: Amber, we're gonna need to do an episode on
- 9:42energy because , as I've mentioned, I'm not a super woo woo person, but
- 9:47like, I totally believe in the power of it, and I love learning about it.
- 9:52So you're, we're going to do an episode where you, you teach me
- 9:56Amber Courtney: Maybe we'll bring on an actual expert.
- 9:58I've definitely studied a lot, but I think that would be a really great
- 10:01episode to bring on a guest speaker.
- 10:05Marie Crenwelge Tilkens: Yeah.
- 10:05As I said, I don't know anything about it, but I totally believe it because I've
- 10:10experienced it, you know, when practicing things like affirmations, and there have
- 10:15been periods in my business where I have felt that scarcity and that desperation
- 10:21to book the next potential client.
- 10:24And whenever I'm feeling.
- 10:26that desperation I don't book.
- 10:29Whereas when I have those feelings of abundance, I do.
- 10:34So there really is something scientific there that I would
- 10:37love to explore at some point.
- 10:39So I was going to add on that.
- 10:43I do use this expander mindset.
- 10:46I didn't know that's what it was called, but another strategy I
- 10:49use is simply changing my mindset.
- 10:52To think that there is room for everyone.
- 10:54And I'm not really a muter on Instagram.
- 10:58I know this works for a lot of people, so I don't wanna discount that for me.
- 11:02I know that I need to address this feeling of insecurity and scarcity head on.
- 11:08So that saying.
- 11:10this person's work is beautiful and mine is too, and comment
- 11:16and like on these accounts.
- 11:18And I find for me that this almost releases that tension that
- 11:22my body is holding onto about
- 11:25Amber Courtney: I love that.
- 11:26Marie Crenwelge Tilkens: I want.
- 11:26Yeah, I totally feel like this release when I lean into it.
- 11:32And I wanna say that you can be very helpful until you feel like
- 11:37you're in that abundance mindset.
- 11:39And something else you can do is you can mute accounts and then like if they're
- 11:44friends of yours, you can still support them by going to like and comment on their
- 11:48work when you're in a good place to do so.
- 11:51Amber Courtney: Exactly.
- 11:52Yes.
- 11:53And you have to Think to yourself, okay, scarcity is when you're saying,
- 11:57I have to take what I can get.
- 11:59Abundance is when you're saying to yourself.
- 12:02I attract what aligns with me when I stop trying to compete on price
- 12:08and focus instead on my own value, my own brand, my own experience.
- 12:12That's when I fill my calendar with tons of people who get me.
- 12:18And I love that you said you go and you still are super supportive and that
- 12:24is another part of good energetics is putting out good energy and positivity
- 12:31on the people's feeds that you may be feeling like that, but then once
- 12:36you said, once you put something positive and you hit like, comment,
- 12:40it actually is a release for you.
- 12:42'cause that's, that's good energy that you're going back and forth with.
- 12:46So I love that.
- 12:48Marie Crenwelge Tilkens: So interesting.
- 12:50I wanna learn more.
- 12:52When we start collaborating instead of that competition, that competing
- 12:57feeling like we're up against each other, like during retreats
- 13:01and workshops, that energy shifts literally opens up doors for everyone.
- 13:08Amber Courtney: Yes.
- 13:08It's such a good reminder that when you celebrate other people's
- 13:11success, you call in your own.
- 13:15Okay.
- 13:15For this next part, we wanna go into what some of our followers said,
- 13:20some advice and tips that they had.
- 13:23Marie and I went on our Instagram the other day and we asked if you guys have
- 13:29experienced these feelings and what you have done to overcome them, and we
- 13:33got a lot of really great responses.
- 13:36Marie Crenwelge Tilkens: Yeah, a lot of you came up with so much wisdom, so
- 13:38we're gonna share a few of our favorites.
- 13:41Amber Courtney: Okay, Jana.
- 13:42She said, I would say if there are certain photographers, you find yourself comparing
- 13:48yourself to befriend them, reach out, grab coffee together, build community
- 13:54with these photographers you admire.
- 13:57Learn more about their story.
- 13:59It's.
- 13:59Cetera.
- 13:59Building community and befriending photographers has helped me so much
- 14:04with getting out of the comparison mindset because you realize behind
- 14:08those quote unquote perfect picks is usually just another amazing
- 14:13photographer who has a beautiful story to tell that could inspire you.
- 14:18So it sounds like genre.
- 14:19You are definitely using that expander mindset method.
- 14:23I love that.
- 14:24Marie Crenwelge Tilkens: Yeah, there's so much to be said for community.
- 14:27I am really close friends with two other newborn photographers
- 14:31in the DC area, and it has just.
- 14:36Changed the way I see the photographer community.
- 14:41I just feel so welcomed and we're in a safe space and we all support each other.
- 14:47So community can really do so much.
- 14:51Photo and Stephanie Nelson said they create more than they consume
- 14:56and plan a few of their own style shoots too, which I love.
- 14:59As we talked about, think that creating gives us so much energy, whereas
- 15:05always consuming can suck it away.
- 15:08Right.
- 15:09I also love what Chelsea Allegra said.
- 15:11She keeps a folder in her phone of all screenshots and messages from
- 15:16happy clients that she can access when she needs to, which can be very
- 15:20grounding and remind us to get out of our own heads and see the big picture.
- 15:26then a Zita photography said she tried to compare herself to where
- 15:31she was a year ago, and I love that.
- 15:34Celebrating your own growth.
- 15:36Amber Courtney: Ooh, I love that one too.
- 15:38Instead of comparing yourself to other people, think about
- 15:41how far you've come personally.
- 15:43That's a great one.
- 15:45Hannah of Kia Collective said, I totally know the feeling.
- 15:49I tried to put myself.
- 15:51In other photographer's shoes.
- 15:53So the people that are, are making her feel competitive
- 15:57or like she's not good enough.
- 15:59She tries to put herself in their shoes, um, but not overstep on, on their feet.
- 16:05She said, just trying to learn from them and how they handled their
- 16:10clients and their business and let it be an inspiration to her.
- 16:15She said, I loved where these people were going, but I didn't.
- 16:19I want to copy.
- 16:20I wanted to be my own person and feel like I'm doing things, inspired
- 16:25by them, but in my own way, and then I learned my own rhythm.
- 16:30Marie Crenwelge Tilkens: These are such beautiful reminders
- 16:32that we're all in this together.
- 16:34Everyone goes through it.
- 16:37Everyone feels that comparison, trap and comparison thrives in silence.
- 16:43So when we talk about it openly, we realize how universal it is and how
- 16:49much power we gain by naming it.
- 16:51Amber Courtney: That leads me into this next point.
- 16:54Curating your feed.
- 16:55If social media isn't inspiring you, time to shift it.
- 16:59Marie Crenwelge Tilkens: Yeah, as I mentioned, I view stories that
- 17:03are inspiring to me, so I am very intentional about what I view.
- 17:08I rarely follow or I rarely view my.
- 17:12Friends stories or other photographer stories, if I know something
- 17:16big is going on in their life.
- 17:17I try to, but I follow a lot of artist accounts, people renovating old homes,
- 17:22people living in Scotland or France, and I feel inspired and good seeing
- 17:28the, these stories I'm thinking about how I want to feel during and after.
- 17:34So it's definitely an intentional decision that has a positive outcome.
- 17:39Amber Courtney: Yeah, exactly.
- 17:40And like I mentioned before, it doesn't always have to be through Instagram.
- 17:44It can be Pinterest or Google or whatever to start creating folders of inspiration
- 17:49for creativity and to focus on that instead of what other people are doing.
- 17:54So I love having boards full of artwork and they may be old
- 18:00countryside, like Marie and I have some similar inspirations.
- 18:03I think like the really.
- 18:05Old fashioned European cottages with a flower garden and a mother
- 18:10with a linen dress, just walking through and collecting flowers.
- 18:13Something like that brings me back to my center and helps
- 18:16me find my inspiration again.
- 18:18And that reminds me of another quote.
- 18:20That one of my followers, Abby Tran said, and she said that actually creating styled
- 18:26shoots helps her feel a lot better and helps her get over imposter syndrome.
- 18:32She said, I definitely feel imposter syndrome from time to time, especially
- 18:36when I start comparing my work or pricing to other photographers.
- 18:40When that happens, I like to plan a model call.
- 18:43Where I have full creative control over every detail, it always helps
- 18:48me reconnect with my creativity and remember why I love doing this.
- 18:52And funny enough, those model call sessions usually end up being the ones
- 18:56that get the most attention online too.
- 18:59Exactly.
- 19:00I love that, Abby.
- 19:01Marie Crenwelge Tilkens: Yeah, taking that action, you know, I'm sure that's
- 19:05positive energy, right amber, and feeling inspired, you'll create from
- 19:11authenticity, not imitation, not like that struggle to keep up in the rat race.
- 19:18You start creating from your soul again and feeling energized.
- 19:23Amber Courtney: Exactly.
- 19:24Inspiration expands you and comparison contracts you.
- 19:29Marie Crenwelge Tilkens: And we can't talk about comparison without
- 19:32talking about imposter syndrome.
- 19:35The voice that says, who am I to charge that much or I'm
- 19:40not as talented as she is.
- 19:43And something I've learned is that imposter syndrome never quite goes away.
- 19:49You basically never.
- 19:51Quote, make it unless you decide you've made it.
- 19:55And I think a lot of imposter syndrome also has to do with being a woman.
- 19:59I think a lot of men come across so confident.
- 20:02Women have only been in the workforce for a few generations, whereas men have
- 20:07been in the workforce for centuries.
- 20:10I think that a lot of women are more likely to admit when they don't
- 20:15know something, or there is a gap in their knowledge, and instead of
- 20:20acknowledging that for what it is.
- 20:22That there's more to learn.
- 20:24They take it all the way to the opposite direction of, I shouldn't be doing this.
- 20:28I'm not qualified.
- 20:31of focusing on what they do know and embracing the idea that it's
- 20:35important to always be learning.
- 20:37Amber Courtney: That's so true.
- 20:39As women, we definitely have to actively work on this a lot to make
- 20:43sure that we're not limiting ourselves.
- 20:47So it's kind of like when I first raised my prices.
- 20:50And I had that panic.
- 20:51I know everyone else has felt this at at some point, and I thought, what
- 20:56if no one books, you know, because I raised my prices quite a bit when
- 21:00I jumped from 500 to 800, and that imposter syndrome definitely showed up.
- 21:07But I want you guys to remember when you're expanding and imposter
- 21:11syndrome does show up, that's a sign of growth, not failure.
- 21:16Marie Crenwelge Tilkens: Yeah, exactly.
- 21:18It's your brain saying, oh, this is a new place.
- 21:20We've never been here before.
- 21:22That's not a no, that's not a stop.
- 21:25It's an invitation to rise and to grow.
- 21:29Amber Courtney: Yes.
- 21:30I tell students all the time, fear is the ticket price for your next level.
- 21:35Instead of asking, who am I to do this?
- 21:39Ask, why not me?
- 21:42Marie Crenwelge Tilkens: Yeah, and if you're someone who needs like concrete
- 21:44evidence, which I totally get it exists.
- 21:47Client testimonials, repeat bookings kind words.
- 21:51Keep a little proof folder for those moments when that
- 21:54imposter voice gets loud.
- 21:57Amber Courtney: Yes, because the truth is successful people don't have less fear.
- 22:02They've just learned not to let that fear drive the car and get in their way.
- 22:07Marie Crenwelge Tilkens: Mm-hmm.
- 22:08Yep.
- 22:10just to recap, confidence, abundance, inspiration, self-belief, those are
- 22:15all super helpful for breaking free from comparison and imposter syndrome.
- 22:21Amber Courtney: Yes.
- 22:22When you know your worth, believe there's enough for everyone
- 22:25and quiet that imposter voice, your energy completely changes.
- 22:30You start attracting the dream.
- 22:31Clients who value your art.
- 22:33And your heart.
- 22:34So if you've been caught in the comparison game, take this as your reminder.
- 22:38There's only one you, your story, your art, and your light
- 22:42are completely irreplaceable.
- 22:45Before we wrap up, I wanna leave you guys with a little energy reset.
- 22:50We can always, use that from time to time, right?
- 22:53Something you can come back to whenever you start feeling comparison or scarcity.
- 22:59Sneak in.
- 23:00And if you want to take this even deeper, spend a few quiet minutes
- 23:04journaling with these prompts.
- 23:07Number one, what does the most abundant version of me believe about
- 23:12her art, her worth, and her clients?
- 23:18Number two, where am I still playing small because of comparison or fear?
- 23:24Number three, how would my energy, my marketing, and my pricing
- 23:28shift if I fully embodied that abundant version of myself today?
- 23:34Marie Crenwelge Tilkens: Yeah, it's so important to face these questions
- 23:38head on because you are accessing like these deep, deep feelings.
- 23:42So you start to rewire how you think about your business and yourself.
- 23:47You move from.
- 23:49Hustling for validation to creating from confidence and trusting yourself.
- 23:56Amber Courtney: And that's when things really start to flow, right?
- 23:58Opportunities show up.
