- 1:35Speaker 5: Roger Wallace joining us last hour on the program, you
- 1:39Speaker 5: heard from Longhorn basketball players Last Hour Julian Larry and
- 1:44Speaker 5: Jordan Pope. In case you missed what we brought you
- 1:49Speaker 5: on back in the first hour of the program, Loghorn
- 1:52Speaker 5: head coach Chief Sarcasian's weekly media Zoom. We brought that
- 1:58Speaker 5: to you and we're gonna re erit as we do
- 2:02Speaker 5: on Thursdays, because it's the final opportunity he has to
- 2:08Speaker 5: visit with a local area and in a couple of cases,
- 2:12Speaker 5: national media. So we'll have that for you coming up
- 2:16Speaker 5: next segment. Sark with his final examination of where the
- 2:20Speaker 5: football team is heading into this game with the Arkansas Razorbacks.
- 2:24Speaker 5: I made reference to this yesterday, and I probably should
- 2:29Speaker 5: make reference to it again today, if only because this
- 2:33Speaker 5: is a Texas Arkansas week. And pause for a swallow water.
- 2:38Speaker 5: There we go, thank him. This rivalry has a great
- 2:43Speaker 5: deal of history, as we know, even though it was
- 2:47Speaker 5: pretty much suspended after the nineteen ninety one season, Arkansas's
- 2:52Speaker 5: last year in the Southwest Conference, and then they didn't
- 2:57Speaker 5: see each other again until they had the home and home.
- 3:01Speaker 5: Well first, they actually did meet each other in the
- 3:03Speaker 5: Y two K Cotton Bowl January first, two thousand. Remember
- 3:07Speaker 5: that deal. How kind of weird it was a lot
- 3:09Speaker 5: of people worried that the the world's computers were going
- 3:13Speaker 5: to stop as it clicked the digit from one to two,
- 3:16Speaker 5: and that electricity might go off everywhere, and water might
- 3:23Speaker 5: stop running through our systems, and all kinds of weird things.
- 3:28Speaker 5: None of that happened. Unfortunately for the Long Horns. Had
- 3:32Speaker 5: a rough game that day in that Cotton Bowl loss
- 3:35Speaker 5: to Arkansas, Major Apple White Tour a knee ligament that
- 3:38Speaker 5: it was difficult. It was a tough, tough ball game
- 3:42Speaker 5: in Texas lost that Y two K Cotton Bowl to
- 3:45Speaker 5: the Razorbacks. And that was the one where they had
- 3:48Speaker 5: players suspended, you know, the night before the game, that
- 3:51Speaker 5: sort of thing. So it was a tough go on that.
- 3:53Speaker 5: But they didn't see each other in the regular seas
- 3:55Speaker 5: until they had a back to back in O three
- 3:56Speaker 5: and O four, you know three, Arkansas came in here
- 3:59Speaker 5: and they had At Jones at quarterback and he was
- 4:01Speaker 5: mobile and he stayed away from Long Wrens and he
- 4:04Speaker 5: was able to beat them on some big passes downfield.
- 4:06Speaker 5: In Arkansas won that game at dk R. They went
- 4:10Speaker 5: back to Arkansas and four and had a real nail
- 4:15Speaker 5: bier tooth and nail back and forth, and Log Warns
- 4:19Speaker 5: came up with a couple of a huge fumble curry thing.
- 4:21Speaker 5: Larry Dibbles recorded a fumble recovery and then and also
- 4:27Speaker 5: Philip Geeger had an interception late and Vin Jeong had
- 4:31Speaker 5: a really nice shovel pass kind of a little flick
- 4:35Speaker 5: out to Cedric Benson who took it for a touchdown.
- 4:37Speaker 5: Texas ended up winning that game twenty two to twenty
- 4:40Speaker 5: in Fayetteville and O four. Then they came back and
- 4:42Speaker 5: they played in O eight in Austin. Texas blew him
- 4:45Speaker 5: out beat him. I think it was fifty two to fourteen,
- 4:48Speaker 5: and they were supposed to come the next year and
- 4:56Speaker 5: asked to push it back because they were starting a
- 4:59Speaker 5: brand new non conference series with Texas A and M,
- 5:03Speaker 5: who at the time was still in the Big twelve,
- 5:04Speaker 5: and they were starting this thing at Jerry World, and
- 5:07Speaker 5: so Texas agreed to move it back. And first they
- 5:10Speaker 5: were talking about I think twenty twelve, then it got
- 5:12Speaker 5: pushed to twenty fourteen, then I think twenty eighteen, and
- 5:15Speaker 5: they finally said twenty twenty one. So the game three
- 5:18Speaker 5: years ago that Texas played in Fayetteville was originally scheduled
- 5:24Speaker 5: when Mac Brown was the coach. It was to have
- 5:27Speaker 5: been played in twentyd and nine, twelve years and three
- 5:32Speaker 5: football coaches, three had football coaches. Later, they finally played
- 5:35Speaker 5: that game because Charlie Strong had been the head coach
- 5:39Speaker 5: and then Tom Herman and then Steve Sarkeisha. Now when
- 5:42Speaker 5: Charlie was the coach, Texas did play Arkansas one more time.
- 5:46Speaker 5: Improbably the most forgettable bowl game the Texas ever played.
- 5:52Speaker 5: And I'll give you two, but this was one of them.
- 5:55Speaker 5: In twenty fifteen, Texas played Arkansas in the Texas Bowl.
- 6:00Speaker 5: Lost thirty one seven and I think the long Horns
- 6:02Speaker 5: had fifty nine yards a total offense in that game.
- 6:05Speaker 5: It was a bad night, tough game. It was. Yeah,
- 6:11Speaker 5: it was not good and they lost that contest. So
- 6:15Speaker 5: there was that, and I guess I was twenty fourteen.
- 6:19Speaker 5: But anyway, that was in that Texas Bowl game they did.
- 6:24Speaker 5: There was, believe it or not, I think a ball
- 6:26Speaker 5: game that might have been worse that Texas played in. Now,
- 6:29Speaker 5: at the time this happened, this Bowl game was played,
- 6:33Speaker 5: I was not part of the broadcast team. In fact,
- 6:35Speaker 5: I was still in college. This was in nineteen eighty
- 6:38Speaker 5: four and that was the year when Texas was number
- 6:45Speaker 5: two in the country in oklahom was number one and
- 6:47Speaker 5: they had the game in Dallas, and we talked about
- 6:50Speaker 5: that as being forty years ago, that that fifteen to
- 6:55Speaker 5: fifteen tie and the rain we had Todd Dodge on
- 6:59Speaker 5: with us, who was the quarterback for Texas at that time,
- 7:03Speaker 5: and it wound up being a fifteen to fifteen tie.
- 7:06Speaker 5: Logorns also had some disappointing losses down the stretch and
- 7:13Speaker 5: ended up at seven three and one, and so they
- 7:18Speaker 5: didn't win the Southwest Conference championship and most of the
- 7:22Speaker 5: other bowl slots were taken, and then it was revealed
- 7:27Speaker 5: there was a brand new bowl game coming out to
- 7:30Speaker 5: be played, I believe on Christmas Day or thereabouts or
- 7:34Speaker 5: the day after whatever, the Freedom Bowl in Anaheim to
- 7:39Speaker 5: We played at Anaheim Stadium, the converted baseball stadium where
- 7:42Speaker 5: the Rams were by then playing home games, And so
- 7:49Speaker 5: Fred Akers had the team take a vote, and the
- 7:56Speaker 5: team voted not to go to a bowl game at first,
- 8:00Speaker 5: and then Coachakers came back said, I don't think you
- 8:02Speaker 5: guys understand he has bowl game, brand new bowl game
- 8:04Speaker 5: he can helped launch. Its Anaheim, It's Disneyland, it's all
- 8:06Speaker 5: this great stuff. They took a second vote again, the
- 8:10Speaker 5: players voted not to play in the game, and so
- 8:14Speaker 5: fred Acres came back in and said, look, you know,
- 8:19Speaker 5: I think you really need to consider this deal is
- 8:22Speaker 5: and whether or not they took a third vote, or
- 8:24Speaker 5: whether coach Akers just said we're going, they went. They
- 8:27Speaker 5: went to the Freedom Bowl. The team was not interested
- 8:32Speaker 5: in playing in it, and it showed. They played an
- 8:35Speaker 5: Iowa team that had chucked long at quarterback, and he
- 8:38Speaker 5: carved them up and beat them fifty five to seventeen
- 8:43Speaker 5: in the rain. By the way, it was a nasty
- 8:45Speaker 5: night in Anaheim. And when the game was over, the
- 8:49Speaker 5: late Ron Franklin, who of course really became well known
- 8:52Speaker 5: with all the years he worked at ESPN. At the time,
- 8:54Speaker 5: he was the Long Wornes play by play voice. He
- 8:56Speaker 5: did it for a few years before moving to ESPN
- 8:58Speaker 5: in the eighties, and he was working with a gentleman
- 9:02Speaker 5: by the name of Glenn Brown, and they had to
- 9:07Speaker 5: fill another segment or two, as postgame shows go sometime,
- 9:11Speaker 5: and he turned to Glenn Brown and he said, Glenn,
- 9:14Speaker 5: you know the Longhorns, and they've already been through like
- 9:18Speaker 5: practically an hour of postgame and it had just just
- 9:21Speaker 5: been this Tan death March.
- 9:22Speaker 1: It was just brutal.
- 9:24Speaker 5: And he said, Glenn, let me get your thoughts one
- 9:27Speaker 5: more time on this long worn team and what happened
- 9:29Speaker 5: here tonight where they have to go, and Glenn Brown,
- 9:31Speaker 5: he's color analyst, who was like taking a drag on
- 9:35Speaker 5: a cigarette in the booth, blows out a puff of
- 9:38Speaker 5: smoke and turns and says, you know, Ron, I think
- 9:42Speaker 5: I've said all I want to say about this game tonight,
- 9:45Speaker 5: put the cigarette back in his mouth and took his
- 9:47Speaker 5: head set off. Now that's teamwork, right. So that might
- 9:53Speaker 5: have been a worse, worse Bowl game even than the
- 9:56Speaker 5: one in twenty fifteen. But anyway, those are probably the
- 10:00Speaker 5: two worst long worn ball games if it's other games
- 10:02Speaker 5: where they didn't play well and got beat, but those
- 10:04Speaker 5: two certainly come to mind. Also. Then, so they finished
- 10:10Speaker 5: it up in twenty twenty one, that home and home,
- 10:13Speaker 5: and by then it was known that the long Runs
- 10:16Speaker 5: were going to be going into the Southeastern Conference, and then,
- 10:19Speaker 5: of course Arkansas took Texas to the woodshed that night.
- 10:22Speaker 5: They won forty to twenty one. And somebody asked Sam Pittman,
- 10:27Speaker 5: the Arkansas coach, in his weekly news conference this week,
- 10:31Speaker 5: if he thought that Texas was given a blueprint for
- 10:37Speaker 5: what they needed to do to build a competitive program
- 10:42Speaker 5: in the SEC. And Pittman's response, and I agree with
- 10:47Speaker 5: what it was more along the lines of perhaps so,
- 10:49Speaker 5: but I think he already had in mind how he
- 10:51Speaker 5: knew he was going to have to build this team
- 10:52Speaker 5: with big guys in the line and all that sort
- 10:54Speaker 5: of stuff. So as much as folks would like to
- 10:58Speaker 5: ascribe it to, oh, this is how the se Se
- 11:00Speaker 5: plays and you better set that as your mark, Sark
- 11:02Speaker 5: had his own ideas about what he had to do
- 11:04Speaker 5: to build this program into a contender, which of course
- 11:08Speaker 5: he now has. Speaking of which we'll hear from Coach
- 11:11Speaker 5: Sark's news Zoom the Media Zoo coming up, and we'll
- 11:17Speaker 5: have that next here on Sports Radio AM thirteen under
- 11:20Speaker 5: the zone of the iHeartRadio app.
