- 0:00Speaker 1: Welcome back to You've Got Hockey Coaches Show, Bob Joyce,
- 0:02Speaker 1: Adam Jordino, Mike Kavanaugh. Here Husky's back at it this
- 0:04Speaker 1: weekend when they take on fourth ranked Boston University game
- 0:08Speaker 1: one of Agannis seven o'clock Friday night, six forty five
- 0:12Speaker 1: on the radio. And then when you got a five
- 0:14Speaker 1: o'clock game on campus Saturdays.
- 0:16Speaker 2: That's not five.
- 0:17Speaker 1: O'clock Saturday, five o'clock correct, and then both games, well
- 0:20Speaker 1: Friday's games on the radio, both games I believe are
- 0:22Speaker 1: on ESPN plus.
- 0:23Speaker 2: That is correct. Correct?
- 0:24Speaker 1: All right, Adam, you're the ESPN plus guy. You get
- 0:26Speaker 1: the next question for coach cav.
- 0:28Speaker 2: When you think about this team's you know, two and
- 0:32Speaker 2: two record defensively, what is the assessment after four games
- 0:36Speaker 2: so far?
- 0:37Speaker 3: I think defensively we've been very good. The one area
- 0:40Speaker 3: that I should say this in our in our d zone,
- 0:47Speaker 3: you know, there's three ways usually teams are going to
- 0:49Speaker 3: score on you. They're going to score off the rush,
- 0:51Speaker 3: They're going to score off of offensive zone play, or
- 0:54Speaker 3: they're going to score off the power play. Essentially, yep,
- 0:56Speaker 3: that's where most teams are going to score. I think
- 0:58Speaker 3: our penalty kill has been pretty good. I think our
- 1:01Speaker 3: d zone coverage has been very good. We haven't had
- 1:04Speaker 3: a lot of teams with a lot of zone time
- 1:08Speaker 3: against us in the offensive zone. I don't know how
- 1:10Speaker 3: many goals we've given up, you know, off of offensive
- 1:14Speaker 3: zone play. The area that we have to continue to
- 1:17Speaker 3: improve upon is defending the rush. That's where a lot
- 1:20Speaker 3: of teams have scored on us when we look back
- 1:24Speaker 3: at the goals that have been, as I said, scored,
- 1:27Speaker 3: So that's an area where we have to continue to
- 1:30Speaker 3: work and against bu especially, they are dynamic off the rush.
- 1:35Speaker 3: They can really you know, if you turn a puck
- 1:39Speaker 3: over in your offensive zone, they get three or four
- 1:42Speaker 3: guys into the play immediately, and they're talented to make
- 1:45Speaker 3: a lot of plays. So that's an area that we're
- 1:48Speaker 3: going to continue to work on.
- 1:49Speaker 1: This week, Mike referenced all the draft picks. I mean,
- 1:52Speaker 1: I put them all above my numbers on here, and
- 1:55Speaker 1: there's a lot in red here. And they're young, and
- 1:59Speaker 1: there's a good chunk that come from the National Development
- 2:02Speaker 1: program that U eighteen team that plays in the USHL,
- 2:05Speaker 1: and a few college teams too. But boy, they're young,
- 2:08Speaker 1: they're talented. I think we'll see vote is really good.
- 2:12Speaker 1: I know that McCarthy's good on the defense, and they
- 2:16Speaker 1: still have a celebrity on the team. And let's not
- 2:18Speaker 1: forget mister Hudson.
- 2:19Speaker 3: Yeah, they you know, and they have a couple of
- 2:21Speaker 3: transfers Owen McLoughlin and Bavore are both from North Dakota
- 2:25Speaker 3: that add a little older experience to their team. But
- 2:31Speaker 3: you know, they're talented. Mike Murtagg's brother, Jack Murtagg, is
- 2:34Speaker 3: a pretty good player. He's playing for them. I think
- 2:38Speaker 3: Hudson and Bomidian on defense, along with Gavin McCarthy are
- 2:42Speaker 3: very good players. Igorov and Nett is a you know,
- 2:48Speaker 3: big presence. And you can't forget Cole Eisaman. I mean,
- 2:53Speaker 3: he can score from anywhere. So they have a lot
- 2:56Speaker 3: of talent, you know, and they've always been that way,
- 3:00Speaker 3: you know, and they're going to continue to be that way.
- 3:03Speaker 3: We're we're built a little bit differently, and you know,
- 3:08Speaker 3: we're going to have to We'll play our style of
- 3:10Speaker 3: game and they're going to play their style of game.
- 3:13Speaker 3: And I think it's going to come down to whoever
- 3:15Speaker 3: executes and you know, plays to their identity better will
- 3:23Speaker 3: be more successful.
- 3:24Speaker 1: Speaking of Murtag, Mike scored his first goal right. It
- 3:28Speaker 1: was a nice goal protecting the puck coming down the
- 3:30Speaker 1: left side. Yeah, I thought it was really nice.
- 3:31Speaker 3: Really nice goal. And you know, he's a kid, he's
- 3:34Speaker 3: got three points already in four games, and he was
- 3:36Speaker 3: a kid that we had spoke about. We might have
- 3:38Speaker 3: talked about him the last time were on the radio
- 3:40Speaker 3: show that he was a player that showed a lot
- 3:42Speaker 3: of promise last year. He was late in the season,
- 3:46Speaker 3: he was in and out of the lineup, but he
- 3:48Speaker 3: was a guy that I was very high on and
- 3:50Speaker 3: I think he's best hockey is in front of him.
- 3:54Speaker 2: Thinking back to what you had said about team scoring
- 3:56Speaker 2: on the rush coming the other way, is it a
- 3:59Speaker 2: matter of when you're in the offensive zone guys are
- 4:03Speaker 2: getting too deep and not able to get back. Is
- 4:05Speaker 2: it specific coverage schemes trying to get back that they're
- 4:09Speaker 2: not covering up enough.
- 4:10Speaker 3: I think it's probably a combination of both. I think
- 4:13Speaker 3: sometimes when you turn the puck over high in your
- 4:15Speaker 3: offensive zone or in your neutral zone, and you have
- 4:19Speaker 3: guys going one way and the puck turns over, that's
- 4:21Speaker 3: what leads to odd man rushes the other piece is
- 4:25Speaker 3: sorting it out when you're coming back. Sometimes what you
- 4:29Speaker 3: have to avoid is duplication. So whether whoever the puck
- 4:33Speaker 3: is when you never want two players going to the puck,
- 4:38Speaker 3: and occasionally good teams create confusion, and whether it's because
- 4:43Speaker 3: they crisscross or change lanes through the neutral zone that
- 4:49Speaker 3: can create confusion and you get two guys on the
- 4:51Speaker 3: puck and it leaves a guy open.
- 4:54Speaker 2: New When you had just said, the team that plays
- 4:57Speaker 2: their own game the best is going to have the
- 4:59Speaker 2: best chance to win this weekend between you and and BU. However, B,
- 5:05Speaker 2: you did just lose a couple of games last weekend
- 5:07Speaker 2: to a really good Michigan State team. Is their value
- 5:10Speaker 2: in seeing how Michigan State did some things and just
- 5:15Speaker 2: maybe plucking a thing from there that maybe otherwise wouldn't
- 5:19Speaker 2: have been on the radar.
- 5:21Speaker 3: Sometimes I think there's always different aspects of a team's
- 5:26Speaker 3: game that you can bring to your arsenal of how
- 5:31Speaker 3: you want to play. However, not I'm more focused on
- 5:37Speaker 3: how we play.
- 5:38Speaker 2: You don't want to spend five days.
- 5:39Speaker 3: We don't want to try to be Michigan State, Michigan
- 5:42Speaker 3: State's Michigan State. We have to be Yukon and what
- 5:45Speaker 3: makes us good. We know what makes us good, and
- 5:48Speaker 3: that's more what we're going to focus on this week.
- 5:51Speaker 1: All right, speaking of what makes them good, they for
- 5:53Speaker 1: check the heck out of you, and two of them
- 5:55Speaker 1: did really well. The guys were and talk to next
- 5:57Speaker 1: Jake Percival and Tristan Fraser enjoy it. Michael roam around
- 6:00Speaker 1: and visit with some of his friends. And we'll be
- 6:03Speaker 1: back with capital later. But the player interviews, yeah that too.
- 6:06Speaker 1: Player interviews are next as the Yukonacky Coaches Show continues
- 6:08Speaker 1: on Learfield in just a minute,
